Best Buy Refurb for about $650 USD

2 reference units (mine and my girlfriend's)

I really don't know what other reviewers in other places were talking about.

If you do a Google search for vpceg37fm/w, one will find

ridiculously great reviews. I have to agree!!! Both units are

especially quiet. There is barely a fan noise and the hard

drives were also very quiet. A HUGE PLUS is that this machine is

cool cool cool. I cannot stress this point enough!!! When i'm

layin on the couch and i have this machine laying on my persons

there is virtually NO heat. Whether i have it on battery or AC,

you can burn DVDs, do hdmi out, virus scan, whatever, and you

can barely feel heat anywhere on the underside. The heat vent on

the left side does a great job pulling heat out of the system...

From the reviews on Sony's website, I think that the refurbs

might have had replacement fans or shoddy heat~sink/compound

issues. Thankfully for our Vaios this is not the case.

Now here is the especially awesome part: My co-worker has a 13

inch Mac book Pro of about the same vintage. They asked me to

Boot Camp their Mac. (That means dual boot mac and another OS on

their mac machine.) As i installed the drivers for the Windows

setup, my jaw dropped to the floor. Virtually all the drivers

needed were for EXACTLY the same components that are in this

machine!!! The little MBP 13 inch which has a lower screen

resolution was hot enough to cook eggs on. Keep in mind that the

MBP in question had close to equal processors and the same

graphics chip #Intel HD 3000# which is embedded on the CPU.

I had to geek it up a bit, so I invested in 2x4gb PNY generic

memory. (Stock it had a 1x 4gb stick) and added a 120 GB intel

SATA 2 solid state drive. I was able to get my windows

experience score from 4.7 to 6.2. In comparison, another co-

worker gave me their HP dv 6T Beats Audio edition 17 inch laptop

to ensure it was ready for prime time dvd video burning. This

was fresh out of the box. The Windows Experiencee Index scored

the machine with a 5.2. This was a second gen sandybridge I7

beast, bested by the little 'old second gen I5 Vaio.

As for the audio, this Vaio has mediocre speakers. Make sure you

get the latest and greatest drivers FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE

COMPONENT. This goes for the audio, video, chipset and network

drivers. If you update your drivers from Sony or Microsoft, you

wont get the best. This is especially helpfull for the subpar

speakers ~ the new audio drivers greatly improve loudness of the

audio.

Other side notes are that if you be a nerd, this vaio does

support virtualization @ the bios level! Installed memory is

samsung, and they know memory chips. Battery life is on par with

the comparible mac as well. The diamond~plate design of the

plastic is great, no smudges! Chicklet keyboard is great, nice

travel on the keys and spacing is good. The dv 6 mentioned has a

chicklet as well, but the travel and spacing of the keys is

nowhere near as nice. HDMI output to a samsung 40 inch tv is

just a matter of plugging it in and hitting the hdmi button on

the tv's remote.

If you decide to upgrade to an SSD configuration, i'd reccomend

an intel. The example unit I chose was an SSDSA2CW120G3. The

retail package comes with an SATA to 2x usb dongle and a

silicone slip cover. You take out the old drive, pop in the new

drive... VOILA! you now can put the cavernous 650 gb original

drive in the silocone slip and you have an instant portable

drive. You might want to spend the 15 bucks or so on amazon and

get an aluminum enclosure though.

All and all this machine has made my fellow nerds give thumbs up

for this investment... To buy 2 of these and be on par if not

better than a spec-wise comparible Macbook Pro is gratifying.

I apologize for any typos and gramatical errors in advance.

Leave some positive comments for this machine. The cheap compaq

cq60-215DX that it replaced had served well for 3+ years, and

was junk... I think i should get about 6+ years out of this

machine, easily.

Cheers!

I bought two of these VAIOs, one in pink and one in white. October 11, 2011, I bought the white one from BestBuy. I thought that for the price of this laptop and Sony's reputation, that I should not have to buy the extended plan. (Wrong!!) I have an older cheaper uglier laptop that is a Sony VAIO and it is still truckin along. So I guess 2 out of 3 Sony VAIO laptops that still work is pretty good. Not so, the laptop's motherboard should last over two years and I will not buy Sony again. I have had the same inconsistencies with Sony products in the past, i.e, televisions and cameras. But that was such a long time ago. I thought things had gotten better since my mother's VAIO desktop is a trooper and never caused a problem,

But I am a girl and the laptop was too pretty to resist. I will know better to look beyond the package for my next purchase.

Is there a laptop manufacturer that puts out a product that is consistent with little maintenance required except for the usual updates that will last at least 5 years without problems?

The laptop has a sleek look to it and if looks were everything, I would give this laptop a 5 star. The only flaw I see in the design is the DVD placement. If you sit with this laptop on your lap, the CD Rom will continually pop open.

I loved the laptop while it lasted. Next time, I will buy a cheaper brand with an extended warranty. :( RIP my beautiful laptop...Now to shop for an ugly, but stable laptop.

I really liked the design of this Sony Vaio Laptop. The performance is great as well. I really enjoy the ergonomic feel of the keyboard and it's responsive time.

Great out of the box experience.

Load the battery, plug it in and be on the internet within 10 minutes.

Small and compact. The photos do not show the battery which elevates the rear by a half inch--but also makes a nice keyboard angle for typing and allows for cooling of any heat dissipation.

Near full sized keyboard, perfectly adequate for typing.

But no keyboard back light for hunt and peck typists.

11.6 inch screen is sometimes difficult to see small type, but otherwise is fine.

Proven simple reliable Windows 7.

Fast for tasks like word processing, spreadsheets or web surfing.

But needs an external disk drive to load DVD based programs.

Quiet, fast for simple office work. No overheating battery.

Battery can last for days if properly managed.

Great Price and Great Value. Small and compact.

This product is perfect for business tasks. A nice compact size and easy to set up

You better be computer savvy if you buy this machine. The drivers are not up to date so you might as well go the emachine support site and download them BEFORE you even try to boot it up. I can guarantee many of these have been returned to the store they were bought from because alot of people thought they were just crappy laptops. Well..they arent..but in order to get the wireless and lan working good..youll have to get the latest drivers. Mine just wouldnt connect...but after all the latest drivers were loaded..it worked like a charm. If your looking for something that will connect to your wireless or lan right out of the box..forget it. These are actually very good running laptops once the drivers are loaded. The lack of a hard drive light irks me a bit..(especially when downloading windows updates)..but it works great and I love mine now. This machine is actually made by Acer...a very good company. I just wished they updated the drivers before they shipped them. I bought mine at the price of a cheap netbook..so I wont complain. Ive also pumped it up with 8gb of ddr3 sodimm..(its actually cheap)..and it screams really good now. Ive seen it on sale in the 270 to 320 range..so look around before you buy. Overall..id rate it much higher if werent for the driver issues. But if your savvy with loading drivers..then this little baby is a "sleeper bargain" when its on sale.

I was looking for a "cheap" laptop to play with Windows 8 Developers' Preview. I was an IT professional so I have had many computers, desktops and laptops in the past. Currently I have an old Compaq laptop hooked up to my HDTV and my most recent laptop an eMachine E525 as my work horse. When I saw this eMachine on sale, I just had to get it.

So far I am pleased with the spec.s and performance. The machine is well built and looks very good compared to other low priced laptops in the price range. Today is the second day of playing with it so I will add more in future, Good Lord Willing. So far I have following observations:

1. First, eMachines may not be as well known as other brands, they are good machines.

2. An aweful lot of people who are not computer savvy, blame their PCs for mistakes they make. One must set all OS settings correctly for a macine to perform at peak. Many simply do not know how to tweak Windows settings or their PC's settings.

3.After the first full charge of the battery, I have been on battery for about 3.5 hours and I still have 40% battery power left!!!

4. The HD was 320 GB instead of 250 GB as per spec.s. This does happen at times with PCs, when a manufacturer will upgrade an item when they are short on the specified items.

5. Based on the history of my "work horse" eMachine Laptop which is abour 20 months old and has been in use 8-12 hours a day on average for that period with flawless performance, I expect this baby to do just as well.

Well like I said, I shall share more when I install Windows 8 on it and play some more.

I'm an IT tech guy, and when one of my customers' old laptops went kaput, I recommended this eMachines eME443-BZ602 since I have an eMachines laptop which is about a year old and I love it. It's the cheapest laptop you can find with the most value packed into it. I really don't know how they do it and still make any money, but I'm not complaining.

The client had me set up the laptop for him, install Office 2007 and an internet security suite. I did all this, including printer install and Win7 updates, in about two hours. It performs wonderfully for the price, which I can't emphasize enough. The battery was full right out of the box and all drivers were installed. No recovery media came with it because you create it in Win7... something which I feel ought to be strongly encouraged from Microsoft. I will continue to recommend eMachines as a perfect budget-friendly laptop for users who don't need excessive power. As most people only need a computer for internet, e-mail, and productivity, this full laptop computer competes with netbook-class devices.

During setup, I was blown away at how many games this thing came with (it came with Pac-Man!). Not a lot of bloatware either.

My only negative feeling is the fact that I won't be seeing this client for a long time at least not for this computer because my eMachine has been 100% reliable for 15 months and counting.

This laptop is not a high quality laptop but it's a excellent value laptop. I bought for my Mother. She wants to learn to use a computer. When I saw the laptop I understood the this is a good laptop. I wanted a reasonably priced laptop using the i7 processor so, since my wife already has an HP, I decided to 'keep it in the family' and get this HP. It was at a good price compared to WalMart and other store fronts. It's super fast compared to my old Acer and it lets me play a few of my games as well. Movie Maker is MUCH FASTER as is just about everything else. The screen is nice and wide also. The battery promises a very long run time and I can see why. They have ingeniously packed an extra row of cells outside of where they normally would be situated inside the contour of the laptop. This row is actually OUTSIDE of the contour on the bottom and it acts like a foot to slant the keyboard toward you. It makes it very comfortable. Great idea!

This laptop is by far, one of the fastest products available right now. Its' i7 processor combined with 8 GB will give you plenty of room for growth. The screen is crystal clear and this little gem comes with about 9 hours of battery power! The price is right on the mark for a laptop that will easily exceed your expectations.

Received in two days, in perfect condition. I bought this as a replacement for my four year old refurbished 17" HP laptop and it is an improvement in every way. It's lighter, the keyboard is a joy to use, and neither the laptop nor power supply overheat. Got an Amazon Prime account with attendant free streaming video when I ordered and movies are fabulous viewed on the big screen. With 8GB RAM, it's fast and powerful. Will update with more info after I've had it longer, but at this point I am more than satisfied.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv7-7030us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

I purchased this laptop for my wife, who works from home. This machine is replacing a 6 year old Acer Aspire 5102wmli. This laptop is a true desktop replacement. The i7 screams, 8 GB RAM is more than enough for the average person (other than hard-core gaming or CAD work), the 1 TB drive is almost limitless in size, the keyboard is very good for a laptop, the screen is awesome and huge, and the battery life is very good (6+ hours, depending on use). I own a DV6-6110us (AMD A6 processor), and am very happy with it. However, I was surprised at how much better the keyboard was on the DV7 -they look the same, but the keys have a very different feel. I was perfectly happy with my keyboard until I used the DV7 while setting-up my wife's new machine. Also, the spacing of the keys is more like a full-sized keyboard. The machine has USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, GB LAN, fantastic WiFi reception, and useful HP system utilities. Unfortunately, it also comes with the usual crap-ware loaded, which took a half hour to uninstall. For those in the market for a full-sized laptop, look no further. The machine is well-designed, well-made, and faster than you'll ever need.

Great Laptop, Great Screen, very fast

i7 3rd Generation Ivy Bridge. 17" 1080i Screen. 8GB Memory. there is nothing I can complain. It's perfect for me.

I only did one upgrade. I upgraded the hard drive to SSD. WOW, Amazing. It runs super fast.

And it's a good value. I checked with HP website, for same configuration, it cost $1200 plus TAX.

So, you better buy it from Amazon to save money and tax.

I bought this laptop a few day's ago at Wal-Mart I paid $100 less than what amazon's asking price was which was a great deal. I really wanted to go for an I7 but figured I could settle for less. But so for this laptop has done everything that I could possibly want it to. I installed Star Wars: The old republic on it and the game runs beautifully. I've also ran some other heavy memory usage programs and didn't take a toll at all. But honestly since I've had this machine for a few days I can't give a better review at this time. But if you want a laptop that can run newer games and do some work related stuff on it for a cheap price go for this. The downfall is the time you will removing the useless junk that comes reinstalled, which of course all computers do. Plus I'm not a huge fan of the track pad on it, it seems to be a bit annoying when attempting to do right/left click.

I wanted a windows 7, 17 inch laptop and due to procrastination missed buying an Acer with intel chip. I couldn't find a Windows 7 machine until I came across this deal. Wasn't too turned off by the ADM chip set as my last laptop was an ADM. Ordered the machine and it arrived in three days......quicker than promised. I have been using it for over two weeks now and am extremely pleased. It is fast.................boot time is 37 seconds, flat! It just zips through everything I have thrown at it. Brilliant screen (it is bigger than my wife's 17 inch Toshiba laptop) and I love the key board. About the only things I don't love about this machine is the power plug and DVD burner are on the right side.......same side as my mouse pad and mouse. But I can get use to that. I had planned on adding to the memory, but so far, I find no need to do that. So I rated this a 5 as I am enjoying it and have no dissatisfaction.

Honest reviews on Acer 17.3" A6-3400M 1.4GHz Notebook | AS7560-Sb416

I have been using this laptop for a few years now, and was given to me as a gift from a relative. The Acer Aspire-7560 comes with a Quad Core, 1.4ghz CPU that autoclocks to 2.3ghz, 4gb of Kingston Ram, and a 500gb Hitachi 5200Rpm HDD. It is a silver and black plastic body, which fills a bit flimsy, but is very sturdy.

Now on to my personal experience with this notebook. I had this laptop working great for a year, but then I began getting several boot errors, rendering my laptop useless. about 6 months later, found out that the hdd was dead, and easily replaced it. Overall, I recommend this laptop to everyone but expect issues with any device. jsut had to put a new OS on it, (Linux Mint 15) and got it working like new!!

My wife is going back to college and needed a laptop to handle graphic art editing. I figured she would need at least a quad core CPU and a higher end GPU to efficiently run the necessary programs. I bought her this refurb after reading the specs and positive user reviews. My research indicated that I couldn't touch another quad core unit for this price. This laptop has exceeded my expectations...very fast, nice big bright screen with good color rendering, and decent speakers. My wife has pretty much made this her primary PC because of its speed, Win 7 OS, and larger screen than her desktop. It seems to handle all programs with ease...great purchase. The only con...the vacant second drive bay (a very nice plus) is useless because of the molded plastic space filler that is molded into the drive/RAM cover. Looks like I'll be using my Dremmel to remove that soon...I plan on adding an SSD to boot from and upgrading to 8 GB RAM, as other reviewers suggested.

I am very satisfied with this laptop so far. I had it for about two weeks. Nice screen very bright. The HDMI works flawlessly. Speed is good and I got everything I was expecting with the purchase of a new laptop.

However, Amazon doesn't tell you that the LEFT multimedia panel is an option to BUY. I did not see this as an option on the Amazon site. So I call customer support and did LIVE CHAT and E-MAIL. I through 6 agents before being told this was an option I had not bought. All the others were suggesting I do a full system restore (losing all the installed software) or sending the system in for repairs.

Computer is good. Customer support is wretched!

I truly don't know how you can find a better laptop for the price. I've now had this for 6+ months and purchased it in a store for $459.00. In my opinion, the keyboard isn't as bad as people have suggested. I sometimes have to repunch a button when typing but half of it is because of off-center fingertip placement on the keys. This laptop is FAST! I used Windows XP before and was reluctant to use the Windows Vista preloaded on the machine, however, I'm pleasantly surprised of the ease of use of Vista.

Pros: Speed of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor

16:9 screen

HDMI connection

Multimedia control on the console

Aesthetically beautiful machine

Cons: Battery sucks (lucky to get thru a movie without dying) even with battery saving setting in Vista

Only has 1.3Mega pixel webcam (better than nothing though)

Kind of a long review sorry...

The Acer Chromebook is a great computer for someone looking for a computer to do internet browsing, light gaming, and light productivity. You can not download any programs to it, but there are a ton of apps available to fit almost every need (word processing, spreadsheets, photo editing, games,etc.. check google chrome store to see what's available if you have any questions). Think of it like a tablet with an app store in that regard.

Way too many bad reviews on Chromebooks from people who do not understand what they are buying and don't understand why windows programs won't work on it. A lot of bad reviews are from people who have never even tried one. Unless you are a hardcore MS office user, or serious gamer who needs a lot of computing power this computer can do almost everything you need.

At first I wasn't sure if this would work for me, because it looked like a low end limited use netbook. But it kept getting great reviews and for $200 something bucks, and the option to return it if I didn't like it, I'd give it a shot. There are tons of reviews from people who have moved away from using their much more expensive computers because the Chromebook is just a better online experience for most of their needs. I now know why.

Honestly if I need something, I know my Chromebook can be up and have me searching Google quickly in seconds. Long before my other computers can get to my homepage (even from standby). I also know all my plug-ins are always up to date and ready to go. Why even turn the other ones on unless I absolutely have too then? Having to sit through windows load/resume screens gets old really quick once you realize you don't have to. Chromebook quickly became my go to computer for anything online.

Due to the fact it doesn't run a bulky OS like windows, it doesn't need that much processor power to breeze through websites very quickly. You would be amazed how fast this little Celeron chip (its actually a stripped down dual core i3 sandy-bridge processor) runs when its not having to support a lot of OS background processes. It is just as fast browsing online as my much more expensive i5 computers.

Power off to my internet homepage is under 10 seconds, standby to my homepage is 1 second or less, and total shutdown is under 5 seconds.

However I tried it out at best buy (they have it for $199), and due to the fact they have so many machines running on the WiFi at the same time it seemed slow in the store. Trust me it is very fast on a good WiFi. Remember it is cloud based, so it is only as fast as your Wifi is. If you are using a slow connection your whole computer will seem slow. Faster the connection, faster the computer will be.

It is cloud based, everything is saved, auto updated and configured on the cloud. Since nothing is saved locally on the computer (unless you want it to be) your files (pics music documents movies etc) are available on any computer with an internet connection if you are away from your Chromebook. If you have to replace or upgrade your Chromebook simply log in and everything is instantly restored from the cloud, including every setting, preference, app, and all your saved data and files. Plus since nothing is actually on the Chromebook, no one can steal any info or files from it. Try that with a windows machine. No reason to ever do any maintenance on anything ever. No worry about viruses/malware because there is no real operating system to infect, no old files to clean out, no registry to maintain, no updates to manually install, no defrag, no virus scans, no maintenance at all since nothing is actually stored on your computer (except the OS and offline apps).

Also, since it is cloud based, no matter how much you download or use it, it does not affect the computers speed. Nothing is stored on the computer to bog it down. It actually just keeps getting faster with every auto update. It is the only computer I have ever used that gets faster as you use it.

HD 1080p video streams smooth with no frame rate issues, even in full screen. Aquarium WebGL renders 40 fps on a high setting with 500 objects on screen, and 35 fps with 1,000. The HD webcam is great, and video chat works with no issues. The speakers are a little quiet for my taste, but you can hear everything just fine, just don't expect it to fill a noisy room with sound. HDMI out works perfect with my HDTV.

You can download music, pics, files, pretty much anything, you just can not run any exe. files if you download them. The Chromebook only runs internet based apps, and apps from the chrome store. The chrome store has a great selection of apps to meet almost every need and is growing quickly.

While it only has a 16gb SSD hard drive, you pretty much only need it to temporarily hold files while you transfer them to the cloud, that is where all your data is stored. The 320GB hard drive is larger but much slower. I opted for the smaller faster 16gb SSD one as I store everything online and it allows the machine to run much faster.

Only downsides are

1. You can't pin favorite websites to the desktop, you have to start the browser then pull them off favorites. I'm sure that will be addressed soon as it seems to be a common complaint.

2. Also you need to have a wireless cloud based printer to print directly from chrome book. Otherwise you need to access your cloud files from a different PC to print. While it has USB ports, it has limited plug and play, they won't work with printers...yet. USB mice, cameras, cell phones, hard drives all seem to work fine though.

3. It is limited with Java plugins but then again not much is in Java anymore so it probably doesn't matter.

4. Volume a little low for my taste, but still very audible.

5. Not the best looking construction, but it is durable.

6. Trackpad might take a little getting used to if you're used to separate left and right mouse buttons, but works great once you get it down (Alt key plus left click, or 2 finger click both work for right click).

The biggest question is why buy this over a similar priced windows laptop that can do everything?

One answer... speed. While a cheap windows unit can do more overall...there is no comparison between this and a cheap laptop. Side by side, its much quicker, smoother, and is just overall more convenient to use. Think of windows like a pickup tuck, and Chromebook like a sports car. You can do more with a pickup, but it's not as fast or fun as a sports car. That combined with the super quick boot up times, zero maintenance, and cloud computing, makes it so quick and easy, that I actually don't use my more expensive computers unless I have too.

Acer vs Samsung Chromebook... Acer is somewhat faster and smoother, and is upgradable. While Acer says 4GB ram max...the chrome OS will actually accept and use any amount of RAM you jam into the 2 slots with a few easy tweaks (I've seen these with up to 32GB of ram running). You can also swap out the SSD and battery for better ones if you want. It has a delete key and caps lock key (the Samsung doesn't for some reason). Battery life on Acer isn't great though. The Samsung has much better battery life, looks a little nicer, and has a nicer feeling keyboard and track pad but is not upgradable. It is sealed shut and everything is soldered in. Pick what features are more important to you. There are some other minor details but those are the biggest.

While it is not for everyone, if you're looking for a computer to just browse the internet, watch videos, app and internet based gaming, do word and spreadsheets, photo editing, video chat, etc... basically what 90% of people do with a computer anyway...this is the one to get. If you want to play games that you need to install to the hard drive, run a serious business, or have a slow or spotty internet connection this is not the one to get.

I actually purchased the Acer C7 Chromebook with 16 GB SSD drive from Bestbuy which was selling it for a cheap $199.

Without sounding to dramatic, I have to say this is one of my favorite electronic purchases in a long while.

I have an amazing MSI gaming laptop, but it's such a power-hungry beast that the battery life sucks and it's heavy, making it impractical for me to lug it around in my backpack. In essence, the C7 is the opposite of my MSI; it's small and light, making for a highly portable machine; the Chrome OS is clean and simple, and although it may take a bit of getting used to, its well worth itby doing everything off Google Drive (the Google cloud service) I can work away knowing that all the essays I type and homework I do are not saved locally but rather store in the cloud. This means that should my C7 be lost, stolen, or damaged, all my work will be not be lost. Moreover, at $199, the thought of having it lost, stolen, etc, isn't as worrisome compared to a similar situation occurring with my $1600 MSI. Also, the Acer C7 is upgrade-able unlike its Samsung Chromebook counterpart. In fact, I upgraded the RAM already, link follows for those curious:

Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 4 GB Kit (2x2GB Modules) 1600MHz DDR3 SODIMM Notebook/Netbook Memory 4 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 204-Pin KHX1600C9S3P1K2/4G

Blah blah blah... who is this for? Someone looking for a quick, simple-to-use, and highly affordable netbook. Who is it not for? Someone who runs high-end, high-spec programs/games or those who need Windows for said programs.

My recommendation? This little guy is PERFECT if you mostly use your laptop for internet-based programs (facebook, email, google-docs, youtube, et al) OR if you wish to have a portable netbook to supplement a desktop or high-end laptop you already own.

I've owned a number of desktops and laptops over the years, and this little Chromebook is the best laptop I've ever owned. It's so lightweight and easy to use, I can take it anywhere. There's no chunky charge cable, the lid closes so easily, there's no button that weakens over time causing it to have problems opening. For being a small screen, it's really easy to read, browse and type. There's no Windows to wait for every time you want to use a computer. Want to search for something, anything? No problem... my Chromebook is on, ready to go, and opens up Google Chrome the moment I open the lid, whether it was shut down or just in standby. I can find things faster on this than any other device I own. And pictures and videos? Not a problem, at all!

My son is a gamer, has an upgraded PC and the newest XBOX 360, and before my Chromebook he had the fastest systems in the house, but not any more. I tested this theory out the other day. We decided to look up videos on YouTube at the same time on our different systems. My Chromebook searched faster, found the video faster, and started playing the video faster than his systems. I was thoroughly impressed. I still am impressed, every time I use it there's something new I discover it can do. You can't download software on to it, and it's version of Windows Explorer lists external storage devices a little bit different than Microsoft based systems, but what it does have is amazing.

The number of apps that are available for the Chromebook is mind-boggling. There's games, utilities, news, weather, entertainment, and more apps. It even comes with a webcam and microphone built in, ready to use. I can chat with any of my friends online using video call through Google Mail. Everything you can do with Chrome on your desktop, you can do with Chromebook... and more! And being Google, everything sync's... want all your bookmarks from your desktop available on your Chromebook? You got it. You want all your contacts on your Chromebook? Not a problem.

Everything you do on the Chromebook is stored online through Google's cloud drive, which is accessible anywhere a computer and the internet are available. I haven't started my new semester yet, but I can't wait to see how my Chromebook handles my online classes. I suppose I might need to access my documents on my Chromebook on my desktop if my professors want MS doc files, but I can still use my Chromebook for all the typing and research and lectures. No longer will I have to use my desktop to download documents or videos because it downloads fast but can't play anything, go to my laptop to watch the videos (it's too slow for downloads, but the graphics are better), then try and figure out what system I should use to write my paper because eventually I'll have to go back to my desktop, because it's connected to the internet (my laptop had issues finding it), so I can actually write my paper and submit it. I am so looking forward to using my Chromebook this semester. It already loads Blackboard faster than any other system I've had.

My best friend got me the Chromebook for my birthday from Wal-Mart. There was practically no setup. We have wireless internet at home, I took it out of the box, put in the battery, opened the lid, it asked for the internet's password, then my Google account info, and I was online and using my Chromebook. I've never owned any Apple products, but I have seen them and played with my friends. I would consider my Chromebook a cross between an iPad Touch and a smart phone, with an attached keyboard. But it's so much better than that, because it's a laptop that happens to have cloud based storage. In fact one of the offers I got when I first used my Chromebook was an extra 100 GB of cloud storage space.

The speakers are pretty darn good for being a little laptop as well. The screen is an HD screen and everything looks so much sharper and cleaner than any other computer I own. Watching Amazon Prime videos or Netflix is a whole lot easier on my Chromebook, as well. And for those of us who like to play computer games now and then, and might have Steam on our desktop, if you purchase a game on the Chromebook, you have access to it through Steam as well, without having to purchase it twice.

It took a little while to get used to how the Chromebook functions. There's no Windows, no start button, no desktop icons, but there is a taskbar, and all the apps you want, every single one of them, is located on the taskbar, in it's own icon. I would definitely recommend starting with the "Get Started" app when you first get a Chromebook. Not only do you get to see everything the Chromebook has to offer, but it gives you a feel for using it and practice using the touchpad mouse. The Chromebook is a Linux based operating system. Now I've used Linux based computers and been less than impressed, even if they did have fewer problems than Windows, and never have blue screens or black screens. Because it's all online and cloud based, and its Google, there's never viruses to worry about, there's no constant update reminders, and anything you have stored that's supposedly not Google Chrome compatible? There's an app for that.

The Chromebook is so much fun to use, easy to use, and it does have the ability to work offline, if any reason you need to be, you can choose what you want access to when you can't be online. It's the most amazing little laptop I've ever owned, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a small, easy to use, lightweight laptop. Once my semester starts and see how handy (or not, but I doubt it) my Chromebook is for my homework/classwork, I'll post another review. I'm anxious to see how it will work if there's any outside software I need, or if I choose to use online textbooks.

Cheers, Laura :)

I love Chromebook and I love the Acer C7; see my big review at Acer C710-2833 Chromebook.

The Acer C7 version, C710-2856, is identical to the Acer C710-2833 Chromebook, which is currently available for $199. That's the right price, so get it instead. (If Amazon raises the price on the C710-2833, look for either version cheaper at Newegg or Best Buy.)

This is not a full featured, maximum capacity, BUSINESS oriented product. So don't buy it if you absolutely need MS Office to function or if you MUST load the latest version of Mortal Kombat, because this won't work.

That said, if you like to browse social media, check your email, and and even use Google+ Hangouts with your knitting friends (it can't just be me who does that), then this compact, lightweight and inexpensive Chromebook might be for you!

I love this Chromebook. I opened the box, popped the battery in and plugged it in. Bingo, it was running. Nothing to download, upload or update. It updates automatically each time you turn it on.

I was already a big fan of Google chrome and Google drive so as soon as I had it running and I signed into my gmail, then it synced to all my other devices. The Chrome OS automatically loaded my bookmarks. It was like this brand new device had known me all my life. Whatever I have put in the cloud I can access where ever I go and as light as this is, it can go everywhere. It even fits in my purse like a tablet, but has a keyboard.

Can you tell that I am impressed?

The Vaio Z is an impressive computer in a three-pound package. It's great for travel purposes and can do basically anything a full-sized computer can do. The battery lasts for hours, so you don't have an excuse for not working on the airplane. It does have one drawback, however - it puts out more hot exhaust than a 1968 GTO. It can get uncomfortable if you are using it as an actual "laptop." Even worse, the computer will shut itself off if it overheats, which can be a real problem during a meeting or long work session. I had to buy a cooling stand. I got one with a single blower that sits right under the Vaio's air intake. That solved the problem, although the cooling stand takes up space in the carrying case and so takes away from the extreme portability of the computer. Can't have everything, I guess.

The laptop worked fine for one month, then the screen showed black blames in the left side, the problem disappear for two months. I asked for warranty and SONY cover it only in USA, I traveled to Ecuador and there was not warranty there, now the screen has two black shadows. Finally I had problems with SSD disk and tried to use the recovery system and it came with a problem and when the system is being restored on the 70% it show an error.

With all this problems I will sell it as bargain on ebay and will never buy another sony laptop. The quality of the components is bad even in Japanese models as this. NOTE: MADE IN JAPAN!!!!!

Best Deals for Sony VAIO Z Series VPCZ134GX/B Notebook PC

The Amazon vendor iMount who sold this to me did not tell me that this was a 2010 model. Note this is a 3 YEAR OLD computer. I had to download hundreds of updates to get Windows 7 updated. It also came with 70 gb of the hard drive already filled up. With what I have no idea since they claimed it was new.

I am now stuck with this laptop as they refuse to take it back without a 50% restocking fee.

The "pinch" function does not seem to be working on the touch pad, which I am addicted to from my previous Sony Vaio.

Bad points: This Vaio Z laptop runs "hot". I have only had it on for a couple of hours and it is so hot that I cannot actually have it on my lap. Also, it seems to be an old style. It looks very old fashioned.

I use it every time. It is extremely reliable (Made in Japan). Doesn't make any sound when running.

Amazon really needs to keep their descriptions more up to date. I almost didn't buy this because the description said the hard drive was 5400 RPM. I finally decided it wasn't reasonable that Amazon would be selling old equipment that wasn't even available anywhere else. My reasoning turned out to be correct. My unit came with 320 GB, 7200rpm (Hitachi HTS723232A7A364). It also has the optional Bluetooth (not mentioned in the description). The rest of the description was accurate.

I like this computer, but there is no reason for me to duplicate -there are plenty of reviews out there to read. Here are a few things I did not read in on-line reviews.

I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of crapware installed. I chose to decline the Norton antivirus option. on past computers, this left a bunch of junk deeply embedded in the OS. But this time, there was no junk. Declining Microsoft Office 10 leaves files on the machine, but they are easily removed through the Programs option in the control panel.

Creating a backup USB disk is very easy and highly recommended. I use a USB hard drive for backup. After storing everything on the drive somewhere else, I used the Thinkpad utility to reformat it, then put the backup files back. Now I can boot from the USB drive, restore my system, and quickly re-add all my programs and files, should it become necessary.

This computer does not have a disk drive activity light, a feature I miss. I found the utility DriveGLEAM does a nice job. It shows disk activity in the task bar.

I ordered the computer late at night. I got it in a few hours less than 2 days -a pleasant surprise.

This is the second laptop that I bought from Lenovo. The first one was an Ideapad Y430 that operated as smooth as the first day in their 3 years time of use, and after a terrible experience with a HP tablet, I wanted to stay with Lenovo. My first option was the ultraportable Ideapad U260, but then I discovered the new ThinkPad E220s. The same size of the U260 (12.5) plus the newer Intel processors, an E-SATA connections, card reader, fingerprint reader and almost the same price.

After receiving it, I can say that it's a very beatiful machine (great design and materials), very light and compact. It's also packed with full features of a normal size laptop (i5 processor, 320 gb HD, 4gb RAM). It's very smooth and quiet, I would try to update the review after some weeks of use. It's also packed with ThinkPad programs in order to administrate energy, networks, etc.

Cons: No option for upgrade the RAM for now.

most parts installed in the pc is good, while the total performance of the pc is not as good as it should be judged by the parts.

Also it is the only series in thinkpad with lower quality design that seems easily broken.

Can't say why. We've done thin clients for maybe 75 installations so we are hardly neophytes. We're setting up a fresh server at defaults and trying again. Doesn't seem to be defective, just difficult to get to work with existing servers.

I found this laptop at a TigerDirect retail store for $650, same exact specs. Boots up Windows fast, and also comes with Windows 8 OS discs (which i'm not using anytime soon!). Keys are soft-touch, but PF keys are a little more to the left than I am used to.I'm sure i'll get used to this.

The touchpad is a bit iffy though. sometimes moving the pointer is not as responsive as my old laptop, and most of the time to 'click' on something (especially to close out a screen), i have to use the left touchscreen button. Moving to the 'red X' and thumping the touchpad, even twice, will often not 'click' the X. however, i've gotten used to this quickly.

I am an old mainframer and not a laptop guru, especially when it comes to software installation, networking, etc. At my office, we have 'people' for that. But I've had no trouble setting up my wireless network, installing the security software, and other tasks which permit me to log into my workplace network.

I had a 10 yr. old HP with Windows XP. It is just wonderful to have Windows 7. The machine is a powerhouse for me. I bought a wireless mouse and I am very happy now. I highly recommend this product. I am so happy I made this purchase.

I have a 17.3" HP laptop and should have stopped there. I have had so much frustration from my first computer, in fact, I had decided to replace it. I spotted the Pro Book with 8GB of RAM and wondered whether I should give HP another chance. Wow, this one is a piece of crap. It worked long enough for me to load all my data and pictures and then quit on the second day. Nothing. It quit. The 17" crashed and I tried to back up my data. Nothing saved. No more chances for HP laptops.

The computer runs great after I took all the HP security tools off. They were not compatible with recognizing my printer and running my real estate programs. Wish they would not be automatically installed. Things are running smoothly now with a great picture. Hate the tiny delete button though. It is in a hard to find position and should be larger.

Mostly the computer is a good buy. The problem is Windows 8. There is no media player in Windows 8. There are only a few close buttons available within the app. The START BUTTON is missing. The return to last page button does not work most of the time. You have to create a shutdown button on the desktop. So I would say that WINDOWS7 is superior to Windows8 and that is why I cannot recommend the purchase of this computer.

I bought the model shown with one exception, it had 8Gb of ram and Windows 7 Home Premium. It can, and has done everything I needed, and after 30+ years as a systems engineer, I only wanted to be able to use my Microsoft Flight Simulator without any jerks, pauses, strange looking ground and/or clouds, etc.. I must say, I was very impressed with the AMD processor, being an Intel fan. It is a dual core processor, which helps greatly if doing spreadsheets, presentations, flow charting, or as I love, playing with my flight sim since becoming disabled with cancer. I have all the controls, of which plug right into the USB with no problems, the color is great, and of course, since it's a laptop, the speakers leave a little to be desired, but do appear to be better than most. I spilled a softdrink on the keyboard almost immediately after purchasing the laptop, and while the keyboard was toast, I found it very easy and cheap (!) to replace, unlike a Compaq/HP unit. The only issue I have with the device is that the HDMI out that I wanted so badly, it was the deciding factor in purchasing the laptop, died as soon as the warranty ran out, and before my spilling drink on it. No matter what trick I used, and I have extensive training from places such as Microsoft when I worked there, just nothing worked. I also would have liked bluetooth, but you can't expect all the toys to be included at that price it has plenty as it is! I don't turn off my systems either, but do reboot daily, and have seen no problems with over heating at all. I use intensive software that hammers the processor, and all have worked flawlessly. Watching videos sometimes will sputter, but I attribute that to having several applications running in the background and having 3 dogs and 3 cats bouncing all around me.

I have also recently ran into a major issue, but it is Microsoft's problem, not ASUS' MS now says the Win7 that came preloaded is not genuine! It came preloaded, and the product key is clearly marked on the bottom, but Microsoft's solution for breaking the activation of the software is for the user to go out and buy another copy!! No FREEKING WAY, BILL GATES!! MS Security Essentials is responsible for destroying the build, it happened after a windows update including an update to essentials, so I blame Microsoft for the problem, and will force them to fix it, one way or another. There is also always Linux, of which loves this laptop, my son bought the same model when I did, and loaded Linux on it instead of Windows. So far, he has seen zero issues. I would also like to see a blueray recordable DVD as an option, and possibly a 2-3Tb hard disk as well, but as it sits, it's a great value and I would do it again as long as I get the extended warranty. Good luck, and I hope no one has the issues I had with Microsoft having an identity crisis.

How fast? VERY fast !

Why it is so fast.

Naturally, the CPU (processor) plays a big role. It's a downgraded version of Intel's latest iCore processors, carrying the graphics on the CPU chip, which makes for longer lasting machines (motherboard won't heat up as much and eventually die) and produces better graphics than the older generation systems that had imbedded graphics.

This machine can play "Need for Speed Shift" at low settings, whereas normal laptops with imbedded graphics, simply can't.

4 gigs of ram.

That's more than 99% of the general populus will ever use. Windows 7 can operate with 1 gig, works very well with 2 gigs and 3 or 4 gigs is more than one normally needs.

320 gig hard drive

is an average size these days but this one is unique in that it is much faster than the average 5400 rpm laptop hard drive. I can't say for sure if it is the actual model of hard drive that makes it faster, or if it is the quality of components on the motherboard, or maybe even some new technology.

One thing I do know for sure is that its benchmarks for sequential read and write speeds are in the upper 80's, which is close to the performance of most 7200 rpm drives.

Other.

The machine has 4 USB ports, one that doubles as an eSata port, has HDMI, and VGA out.

That's fairly standard these days but some lower priced laptops only have 3 USB ports.

It has a finger print reader which will be handy for some folks, has no bluetooth which could be handy but not a deal breaker for most and has a very good webcam for low lit conditions. It's not very high resolution and some folks might consider too low for them, but for me it's fine and the brightness is a huge plus.

In short, this is an average laptop with average build and average connections.

Where it excels is that it is VERY fast.

It's not that I need speed so much, it's that I can't stand slow machines that keep me waiting.

This machine does NOT keep me waiting and is quite astounding for its price range.

I'll keep it concise: Lenovo's B570 is an excellent mid-size budget laptop. i bought one last week and, it's quite a step up (processing-wise) from my old lenovo s10e netbook. 2ghz and 4gb of ram go a long way for me, personally. i run ableton live 8, and it runs super smooth, even with Max4Live. this laptop is well designed, with plenty of ports (3 usb, 1 usb/esata, hdmi, vga, ethernet, standard audio in/out, media card reader) and is sturdily constructed, despite being constructed entirely of plastic. a truly great keyboard, and a good, medium/large trackpad w/ multitouch. only things keeping it from 5 stars is lack of bluetooth, slow hard drive (5400rpm), and "meh" battery life (4hrs or so). highly recommended purchase if you're on a budget. good for general purpose/business computing, internet (i've never had netflix run so smooth), and from my experience, running digital audio workstations (FLStudios, Ableton, Cubase, Reason, etc. should run beautifully).

Ditto to Bryan's review. I bought this out the door tax and all from Best Buy for $405. I don't think there is a better deal out there for a budget laptop. The features it has trump any I've seen that are $300 to $450. I've had this a month or so now and it is supperb for everyday use. I took a star off for the 0.3 megapixal webcam.
