Best Buy Refurb for about $650 USD

2 reference units (mine and my girlfriend's)

I really don't know what other reviewers in other places were talking about.

If you do a Google search for vpceg37fm/w, one will find

ridiculously great reviews. I have to agree!!! Both units are

especially quiet. There is barely a fan noise and the hard

drives were also very quiet. A HUGE PLUS is that this machine is

cool cool cool. I cannot stress this point enough!!! When i'm

layin on the couch and i have this machine laying on my persons

there is virtually NO heat. Whether i have it on battery or AC,

you can burn DVDs, do hdmi out, virus scan, whatever, and you

can barely feel heat anywhere on the underside. The heat vent on

the left side does a great job pulling heat out of the system...

From the reviews on Sony's website, I think that the refurbs

might have had replacement fans or shoddy heat~sink/compound

issues. Thankfully for our Vaios this is not the case.

Now here is the especially awesome part: My co-worker has a 13

inch Mac book Pro of about the same vintage. They asked me to

Boot Camp their Mac. (That means dual boot mac and another OS on

their mac machine.) As i installed the drivers for the Windows

setup, my jaw dropped to the floor. Virtually all the drivers

needed were for EXACTLY the same components that are in this

machine!!! The little MBP 13 inch which has a lower screen

resolution was hot enough to cook eggs on. Keep in mind that the

MBP in question had close to equal processors and the same

graphics chip #Intel HD 3000# which is embedded on the CPU.

I had to geek it up a bit, so I invested in 2x4gb PNY generic

memory. (Stock it had a 1x 4gb stick) and added a 120 GB intel

SATA 2 solid state drive. I was able to get my windows

experience score from 4.7 to 6.2. In comparison, another co-

worker gave me their HP dv 6T Beats Audio edition 17 inch laptop

to ensure it was ready for prime time dvd video burning. This

was fresh out of the box. The Windows Experiencee Index scored

the machine with a 5.2. This was a second gen sandybridge I7

beast, bested by the little 'old second gen I5 Vaio.

As for the audio, this Vaio has mediocre speakers. Make sure you

get the latest and greatest drivers FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE

COMPONENT. This goes for the audio, video, chipset and network

drivers. If you update your drivers from Sony or Microsoft, you

wont get the best. This is especially helpfull for the subpar

speakers ~ the new audio drivers greatly improve loudness of the

audio.

Other side notes are that if you be a nerd, this vaio does

support virtualization @ the bios level! Installed memory is

samsung, and they know memory chips. Battery life is on par with

the comparible mac as well. The diamond~plate design of the

plastic is great, no smudges! Chicklet keyboard is great, nice

travel on the keys and spacing is good. The dv 6 mentioned has a

chicklet as well, but the travel and spacing of the keys is

nowhere near as nice. HDMI output to a samsung 40 inch tv is

just a matter of plugging it in and hitting the hdmi button on

the tv's remote.

If you decide to upgrade to an SSD configuration, i'd reccomend

an intel. The example unit I chose was an SSDSA2CW120G3. The

retail package comes with an SATA to 2x usb dongle and a

silicone slip cover. You take out the old drive, pop in the new

drive... VOILA! you now can put the cavernous 650 gb original

drive in the silocone slip and you have an instant portable

drive. You might want to spend the 15 bucks or so on amazon and

get an aluminum enclosure though.

All and all this machine has made my fellow nerds give thumbs up

for this investment... To buy 2 of these and be on par if not

better than a spec-wise comparible Macbook Pro is gratifying.

I apologize for any typos and gramatical errors in advance.

Leave some positive comments for this machine. The cheap compaq

cq60-215DX that it replaced had served well for 3+ years, and

was junk... I think i should get about 6+ years out of this

machine, easily.

Cheers!

I bought two of these VAIOs, one in pink and one in white. October 11, 2011, I bought the white one from BestBuy. I thought that for the price of this laptop and Sony's reputation, that I should not have to buy the extended plan. (Wrong!!) I have an older cheaper uglier laptop that is a Sony VAIO and it is still truckin along. So I guess 2 out of 3 Sony VAIO laptops that still work is pretty good. Not so, the laptop's motherboard should last over two years and I will not buy Sony again. I have had the same inconsistencies with Sony products in the past, i.e, televisions and cameras. But that was such a long time ago. I thought things had gotten better since my mother's VAIO desktop is a trooper and never caused a problem,

But I am a girl and the laptop was too pretty to resist. I will know better to look beyond the package for my next purchase.

Is there a laptop manufacturer that puts out a product that is consistent with little maintenance required except for the usual updates that will last at least 5 years without problems?

The laptop has a sleek look to it and if looks were everything, I would give this laptop a 5 star. The only flaw I see in the design is the DVD placement. If you sit with this laptop on your lap, the CD Rom will continually pop open.

I loved the laptop while it lasted. Next time, I will buy a cheaper brand with an extended warranty. :( RIP my beautiful laptop...Now to shop for an ugly, but stable laptop.

I just got this laptop, so it is a little early to notice anything unusual, but first let me say, I really wanted a white laptop with a lot of RAM. When I opened the box, to my surprise, it was not only white, but slightly pearly with a really cool texture, (can not tell in photo) which I love even more! This is my first upgrade to windows 7, really hate leaving xp behind, but I guess I had to start saying goodbye.

So far this laptop is really snappy and I have already installed, adobe photo shop, printers, itunes, all music (4000+ songs) a ton of hi res photos and artwork (I am a graphic designer) all my documents from other computers, avast anti virus and I still have 418GB free space out of the 455GB, not bad! oh, and I love the keyboard, it has really nice sized keys and large letters/number easy to see. There are 4 usb outlets, I just ordered a logitech wireless bluetooth enable mouse, I hope that installs easy. Another great thing is the weight, I believe it is just about 4 lbs. My old acer laptop (which I hated) was the same size footprint, but weighed 7 lbs...That's about all I can say this early in the game, but seriously, I am so impressed with the looks, that if it runs well over the next few months, I may buy a second one for my office and ditch the desk top computer.

I needed a laptop quickly because the school semester was starting. I cant believe how slick and clean this laptop looks all of the time! The texturing on it is amazing too, and if you sign up for amazon prime, you get 2-day shipping. Its awesome.

Only problems ive had are that sometimes the mouse lags a bit...and the bottom of the shift button tends to pop up every now and then, but you sorta just slam it back down. :D

HP Pavillion dv6t Quad Edition. After abortive attempt by HP to divest its PC business, and some past negative dealings with HP rebates, I decided to update my Toshiba i7-740QM to this HP i7-2760QM. So after research, I bought one of these to see if the 2nd Gen Intel i-series CPUs really were "better". Bought through HP for quite a bit more money in Nov. 2011. Specs were very good, but I upgraded (part of the reason it was more expensive) the 5400 rpm hard drive to a 7200 rpm. Though there was a delay at Customs in Singapore (didn't know they were made in China), and a 6-day delay at Customs in Memphis, I finally got this supposedly improved laptop. Strike "supposedly". It ran much cooler than the very good Toshi Satellite 665. Toshi has 8 Gb 1066 RAM, the HP has 8 Gb DDR3 1333 RAM. Same MS Ultimate OS. Same Office Home & Business 2010. Norton 360 v.5.0. Toshi has a good 500 Mb DDR3 nVidia 330, the HP has a (much) better 2 Gb ATI DDR5. Beats Audio is much better than the Toshi's "good" Harmon-Kardons, though I have yet to hear any laptop speakers get even close to external add-ons. Both have a 720p HD, which is quite adequate for non-gamer/non-tech graphics (HP with the good, additional Intel 3000 for routine graphics on the CPU). The Toshi has a multi-DVD, the HP a Blu-Ray ROM/multi-DVD. The Toshi has 3 USB 2.0 ports, the HP two 3.0 (with charging capability, and on my desktop, an added "card" 3.0 runs 3-1/2 to 4 times faster backups and file transfers to 3.0 external drives than the prior 2.0) and 2x2.0 (one 2.0/eSATA). The Toshi booted in (minutes:seconds) about 1:30, the HP in :45 with Norton 360, Adobe, Office, etc. Office, Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, and several other programs on the HP came up in just over 1/2 the time as in the Toshi. The Toshi's 12-cell battery would last about 2 to 2-1/2 hours. The HP's 9-cell ran for a bit over 4 hours. The Toshi's black textured plastic barely shows a fingerprint, the HP's dark umber shows them readily. Both keyboards are similar. I've worked with computers since 1983, though not a tech person, and have lots of experience as an "advanced" novice-level user. The decision to purchase this model HP has so far (2 months) been a very good one, and I was so pleased at the improvements, I'm ordering a new one, for less cost, through Amazon (even though the new models will be out in a couple of months with the new "third generation" i-series CPUs). I gave this (reviewed) one to my son (an IT professional), who likes it also, replacing a very nice Dell Studio XPS (i5 CPU). This Amazon-ordered one has only a 5400 rpm hard drive, but I don't need (in my home and travel) the faster one. Remember, your MS Performance score is determined by the least fast component, which currently (assuming you don't go to an SSD hard drive) is about 5.9 on the 7.6 scale. The 5400 will score slightly lower than the 7200, but everything else critical to use (CPU, RAM, optical drive, etc.) runs significantly faster, often making up for the slower hard drive. And where the Toshi ran hot (not burning, but definitely uncomfortable after a short while of use), the HP gets warm, but not hot. Despite the fingerprints on the dark umber showing (not a performance issue), I found the fingerprint reader to be accurate and helpful (chuckle). So no miracle here, but a definitely worthwhile upgrade for me, and I saved nearly $400 from HP's website. The Toshi was very good 2 years ago, this HP is enough better to justify this under-$1,000 purchase.

Great price for a loaded i7 laptop, and the HP dv6t has overall very good reviews from multiple sites. The 8GB of RAM allows for fast Windows loading and a lot of multitasking, as well as the ability for future expansion. Can't believe this also includes a Blu-ray drive for the price, so I can take my BR movies on the go with me and watch them while traveling. I also like that this has the upgraded USB 3.0 ports, and the sound from the Beats audio is really great. I always thought a fingerprint reader was a novelty, but it really is nice and quick to sign on versus having to type a password each time.

Overall very pleased with this laptop and it's price. I couldn't find any other similar laptop for under 1k!

I purchased this laptop for my sister for school. She is an architecture student and we couldn't afford a mac.

I must say I am very pleased with the service. I was a bit worried though, because the estimated delivery was about 2 weeks and she was leaving the country for school but it came way before time and was shipped the day after I made the order.

The laptop itself ran smoothly and fast but it is heavy! and the charger is huge! Overall, it's not the best for my sister's field but it works well enough. I would definitely recommend this laptop for personal use or students.

I buyed it on april 2012, it was one of the best laptop on the market on that time. It works very fast, all my work is done with a bunch of speed. I'm an IT Engineer and I use it for my work. I run different virtual machines, Visual Studio 2012 and others memory and processor consuming task. I also a photographer, so, sometimes I use photoshot, adobe lightroom at the same time. I recomment it for any one buying a laptop.

I did a lot of research before I bought my new computer because the last one I had was horrible. I had an older Toshiba Satellite, which never worked quickly from the get-go. I was used to frequent internet shutdowns and major freezing issues in all programs. This is a major upgrade. It only slows when I'm running complex algorithms on large datasets, although even when aligning three whole bacterial genomes, I could still run others applications fine. I ran a program to annotate genomes which I was warned would take hours, but it took about 10 minutes. It stays pretty cool and quiet. Its a very attractive computer, especially with the bluish backlighting and the black aluminum case (the dark umber). The Norton security was a bit of an irritant, as I had to open Windows in safemode to enable its uninstallment. I do like typing on the keyboard for some reason, although it took some getting used to as the keys are spaced differently than on other machines. The speakers sound great! Definitely doesn't sound like a laptop; they also get very loud. I like the fingerprint pass a lot, but it can't be used outside of unlocking your computer and internet explorer, so its functionality is limited if you use a different web browser.

It is heavier than some of my friends' Macs or smaller computers, but this is because everyone else is buying 13" screens or less. I wanted a larger screen some things just can't be visualized in 13". The power cord adaptor is large, but you might not even need to carry it with you, as the battery lasts about 4 hours. The computer is thin and easy to carry. It feels like your holding a textbook. I can't think of any problems that I have had with this computer. Everything works as it is supposed to, and it was a great price for the functionality!

I bought mine directly from HP and it said it would take 2 weeks to arrive. But it actually came in about 5 days, I think.

Great product. Nicely packaged and sleek design. Not too heavy and just right for the average user. Out of the box, add battery, plug in and go. Display is crisp (once you increase the brightness F12) and the responsive keyboard is a dream to type on plus number keys separate, thank you. High fingerprint threshold and nice finish on all surfaces. Cool running and quiet. Better than I expected.

Just unboxed the laptop, doing initial setup. Packaging was awesome; had this cool fold-out soft-foam that cradled the computer 360 degrees, but was slotted down the top-center to allow the laptop to be removed in a couple seconds. Battery install was a snap, initial setup going great. Installing World of Warcraft now, and browsing around to collect a few programs. Not having any trouble with processing speed so far.

More updates to come.

Update 8/22/13: Great laptop! This laptop runs WoW Mists of Pandaria very well for the price. During normal play (flying around, in town, auction house, etc...) i'm hitting 60+ frames per second (FPS) with low to medium settings. During large raids and certain world encounters, settings have to be on low and FPS drops to around 15-30. Still playable, but a little bit lacking. I'm considering a solid state drive for this laptop to boost it a little bit.

Keyboard is great, touch pad is just the right amount of sensitive. I wish it had a standalone microphone plug, but i'm not going to knock any stars. Most of the bloatware was easy to remove, which is a big plus.

So far, i'm extremely happy with my purchase and i would recommend to the casual gamer, student, or home office user.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G700 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

This notebook computer is very good and I've owned a quite a few in my day.

I never owned a 17,3 inch laptop before so this is my first.

I just sold my Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXB 14-Inch Laptop that I paid $599 in July 2012.

I was a bit skeptical at first for such a cheap laptop but the Lenovo design is great.

Opening it up to put in a SSD or upgrade the memory is very easy. Charging port design is great.

Screen is excellent. Sound is awesome. Cooling system is on the left side (not underneath).

The first thing I did when I got it was put in 4GB of extra memory and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Got all drivers from their website, no problems...

The only thing is on the website (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CRXZU94) the product description list Bluetooth as a feature (at least when I bought it). When I got it there was no Bluetooth combo card, just a Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless LAN Card (04W3750). So if you need integrated Bluetooth get something else. For me the trackpad is quite nice and not like those new VAIO ones so I don't need my external bluetooth mouse to get work done.

Also you need a big notebook bag for this baby.

Will keep you posted!

Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars

June 7, 2012 Update: As one person pointed out, Asus is about the release the Zen Prime, or the second generation of the Zen Book. The following review pertains ONLY to the first generation. Some of it may still apply (I'm pretty certain Asus will still include a bucket load of crap bloatware) but as I haven't seen one I feel it's important to note it so I don't confuse people.

Also, as part of this update I'd like to say that I still have the Zen Book and I still like it. I've found that the keyboard is a bit touchy but works MUCH better if you put the thing on a hard, flat surface like a desk. Typing in your lap you may miss more keys than typing on a table or desk. In the time since this review first showed up, I've managed to put a couple of scratches in the spun aluminum lid of the machine as well. Obviously scratches make no real impact but they certainly do stand out. Everything else... pretty much still awesome!

Oh yeah, you can see the screen outside on a sunny day!

And now, back to my regularly scheduled (and unedited) review:

By now there are quite a few people reviewing these machines and there are some common themes. But before I get into it, for those that haven't really paid attention there are a number of models and you may wonder "Does THIS review for this model really apply to the one I'm looking at?"

The short answer is pretty much yes. There are really only a few variations and the biggest is how big the screen is. There's an 11 inch and a 13 inch. The other two variables are which processor you have and which hard drive you have. That's it. So for the most part a review for one model of Zenbook applies fairly well to all other models.

So, the common themes you may have seen in order:

1. The track pad sucks. No it doesn't. Per the recommendations I upgraded the driver and it works just fine. By default the cursor speed is slow but that is a simple setting in Windows. Once that was changed I've had no problems other than getting used to it. My old Toshiba had separate buttons so I got used to driving with one hand and clicking with the other. Because the buttons and pad are all one piece, when I try that it confuses the pad. Don't do that and it's fine. Two finger tap works great for a right click. So it does not suck. It's just different. People who are complaining about it either want it to be exactly like what they had or haven't even bothered to use it.

2. The keyboard is hard to type on/uncomfortable. It has taken me some getting used to. I'm a touch typist and can usually hit about 70 words a minute pretty regularly. The keys on this keyboard do take more force than on the Toshiba I'm replacing. But I'm not a featherweight typist so I haven't had much trouble. I do miss keys once in a while but it's not a problem for me. Mostly I miss the keys on the bottom row near the home keys. So cvb and nm, Also the keys are not back lit. Would be nice if they were but the screen is bright enough to see them without.

3. It comes with lots of junk pre-installed. Yes. It does. But so does every other factory computer I've ever purchased. Most I just uninstalled. Honestly there were more programs than I care for and it's a bit of a hassle to remove them but it's not a deal breaker for me. Just make sure you know what you're uninstalling as some are kind of necessary. For the record: HP's come with more junk thank this did.

4. Its wireless doesn't work. I have had ZERO problems. Missed the m) I took it out of the box and it connected to Boise State's wireless network immediately. Granted my office is less than 20 feet from the WAP. I updated the drivers and brought it home to my craptastic Lynksys G band router. It saw that and picked it up right away. It's got about the same signal strength as my Samsung Focus and my old Toshiba laptop. It's picked up every wireless signal I've tried to attach to without a single problem.

5. The edges are kind of sharp. Yes they are. It's not completely uncomfortable but it would be nice if they were rounded over. At least along the front edge where your wrists tend to be. They're not going to cut you but they can dig in a little (missed the l) bit.

Over all it's a great machine. It comes with a nice nylon bag/case to carry it in so before you buy the machine and a case check out what (missed the a) comes along with it.

The screen is nice. BRIGHT. Very bright I found myself turning that down a little as it's brighter than I like. But that's a nice change. Usually you turn screens up full to 10 and wish there was an 11. The fact that I'm down around 2 or 3 in a dark room and 5 or 6 in a lighter (missed the t) bodes well for use outside.

The audio is far nicer than a machine this size deserves. It's a little on the quiet side from what I came (missed the m) from but the sound is great. The Toshiba had larger speakers by Harmon/Kardon. By comparison this is a little quieter and has a slightly hollow sound but is not at all "tinny". The volume isn't as loud as the last laptop but the actual quality is great.

My actual biggest gripe is that on the 256 gig hard drive Asus actually partitioned the into a C: and a D: drive. It's an old school way of thinking which says software gets installed to C: and data gets saved to D:. In practice it doesn't work as well since Windows just likes to save stuff to your user library which by default is located in C:\Users. You can extend that library if you want but I chose to delete the D: partition and extend C: to the whole drive. I find that a better way of working. That's a personal preference and it took all of a minute to fix it.

So, is it a good machine? Absolutely. I got mine from BB because they were in stock. Does it have some faults? Yeah but what machine doesn't? The perfect machine for me may not be the perfect machine for you. Is it better than a MacBook Air? Depends on your preference. That's like asking if Ford is better than Chevy. From a purely objective point of view I'd have to argue that they're pretty much (missed the m) on par with each other. The ZenBook is a little cheaper, has a higher resolution screen and comes with a few extras the Mac doesn't. The Mac is... well it's a Mac and I have no idea why you'd spend extra because of that. I'm not a Mac guy. I can tell you that the two compared side by side have very similar stats so that's simply a matter of preference.

Over all, it's a good, well built machine with a lot of features, a good price point and a few flaws that I consider pretty small. For the record, I do IT work for Boise State so I see a LOT of laptops on my desk ranging from ultra cheap netbooks to the super high end MacBook Pro.

My personal choice said this was the best machine (missed the m) for me. It may not be for you but it's a great machine and I have no problems with 4.5 out of 5 stars. Fix the edges, reduce the needless software and maybe tweak the keyboard a bit and I'd give it a 5.

I have purchased a UX31E and UX21E for my office with high hopes. If they were good enough, I was going to purchase several more for my staff. I very much wanted to like these ultrabooks. They look nice, the shell has a very solid feel and they were very light (which was very important to me, since I am usually out of my office a lot). The screen is very crisp and bright. I love the fast start-up times from boot and hibernate. I have read many reviews talking about how bad the touchpads were, but I figured it would eventually be fixed with driver updates, so I purchased these laptops anyway. There are two types of touchpads out their for these ultrabooks. Luckily both of the ones I ordered came with Elantech, which everyone seems to say is the better of the two. The first thing I did was go to Asus's web site and download the latest drivers. I had no problems with the touchpad or network connectivity that some have reported but that is probably because I updated the drivers first thing, which is supposed to solve those problems.

The performance of both machines were better than I expected, but I will say the UX21E had the faster hard drive. It came with 128GB SSD and after running some benchmarks, it showed it was much faster than the 256GB SSD in the UX31E. They probably were made by different manufactures, but I did not try to verify that. Battery life wasn't as good as I hoped, but certainly seemed to do a respectable 4-6 hours under constant use and much longer on standby. The variance in how long the battery lasted just dependied on how much of a workload I put on it. For instance, if I was just checking email and editing Office, Powerpoint & Excel files, then it would be closer to 6. But if used it for more intense workloads, then it would last closer to 4 hours.

After my initial testing, I wiped windows off of one of the machines and re-installed it from scratch to get rid of all the bloatware (extra programs that just take up space and slow performance of you machine. You probably don't even want to use most of those programs anyway). By doing so, I certainly saved a lot of hard drive space, which I needed on the 128GB SSD, but did not need on the 256GB SSD. The newly installed Windows 7 also seemed to run faster than the factory install, which I expected from what I said above. If you do reinstall windows, please go to Asus web site and download all the drivers for these laptops first and put them on some type of USB drive or memory stick for later install. Your ultrabook will not work well without installing a few of these Asus drivers (such as touchpad drivers, chipset drivers, USB drivers, wireless and USB ethernet drivers)

With all of that you are probably thinking this is a great laptop. I wish that were the case I wanted it to be so. But it has one major flaw that can not be fixed with a driver update. The keyboard is very sub-par. A keyboard is such a key part of any computer, it just has to work and work well, but this one doesn't which is unacceptable. While typing, I kept noticing that keys that I pressed were not registering. I kept having to back up and re-press the appropriate key. I am a fast typist and this was slowing me down tremendously. I found it very frustrating.

I then started testing to figure out why this was happening. I quickly noticed that if you hit the keys dead center, they all work. But if you press them on the corners, some work all the time and some work some of the time and some hardly ever work. I have never used a keyboard that would not work if you pressed the key off center except for keyboards that were years and years old and were starting to fail. I had this experience on both ultrabooks I bought (UX21E and UX31E). It was more pronounced on the 21E, but that was probably because it isn't a full size keyboard, so I would be more prone to not hitting the exact center on a smaller keyboard.

If you have this laptop, you can test this yourself. Just open up notepad or some other editor; press every key in the center and then in the corners. You will find many don't register the key presses very well in the corners, with some worse than others. When I did this test, I found each of the ultrabooks I bought had a different set of keys that were worse than the others, but both had the problem. Now if you are not a typist and only finger peck, you will probably hit dead center on all of the keys the majority of the time, so this won't effect you as much. If you are a slow typist to where you the exact center of the key 99% of the time or just pound the heck out of the keys when you type, then it will work more often for you than for me. But if you are a moderately fast to very fast typist and your key presses are average in pressure to light, then the keyboard on these laptops are going to be very frustrating to you. Most of the fast typists I know, including myself, press moderate to light on the keys, which helps them move their fingers to the next key faster and hence type faster. Everyone will sometimes not hit the direct center of the keys especially when typing very fast and we shouldn't have to!

I have NEVER typed on any keyboard that so poorly registered keystrokes. And as I said previously, since a keyboard is such a vital part of any computer it just must work and work flawlessly. Unfortunately the keyboards on the UX21 and UX31 are not good, so it is a showstopper for me. It is really disappointing. I really liked these laptops otherwise.

For Linux users, new laptops sometimes take a while to get fully supported under Linux to where they work well and it seems that is the case with these laptops as well. Besides Windows 7, I did also install Linux on these laptops. I installed Linux Mint 12, with kernel 3.0.0.12. The touchpad worked fine for me even two finger scrolling. I know most of the Ubuntu posts I read, said two finger scrolling doesn't work for them, which surprised me, since Mint uses Ubuntu repositories. But I am having no problem with the touchpad on Linux Mint. The only issues I have run into is that battery life is nowhere near as good on Linux Mint as it is on Windows 7 (with the Asus drivers installed) and I have had one sudden and unexplained shutdown on Linux Mint. When I installed the latest Ubuntu kernel, which is supposed to solve the poor battery life issue on Linux, the touchpad stopped working properly. So I decided to deal with the worse battery life and keep using the 3.0.0.12 kernel that came with Linux Mint, because a usable touchpad was more important to me that longer battery life. I know eventually (I expect this year) a new kernel will be released that enables both good touchpad use and long battery life, so I know my 2-3 hour battery life on Linux would improve later this year. I was willing to live with it until then.

Unfortunately, since the keyboard issue is not a driver issue, but just a poorly constructed keyboard, I also had a lot of missed key presses under Linux too. Because of the keyboard issue, I won't be using this laptop as my main laptop. It will go into the pool of laptops my office uses as floaters (a temporary use laptop that staff may borrow usually when they forget their regular one at home or it breaks).

I won't harp on the appearance of the materials, font's used, etc. Yes the weight may be different then Asus has advertised, there are alot of variants of the machines in each form factor (ux21 or ux31) and this may explain the discrepancy in the specs. Either way the design is impressive and it is a stunning notebook.

Other reviewers have been accurate regarding the poor performance of the atheros 9485 wireless card. I have had a similar experience with my unit running it in it's unboxed condition.

I flashed the BIOS from 204 to 206 (using winflash), updated drivers for the sentellic track-pad, the atheros 9485 WiFi, bluetooth, and etc, removed alot of Asus bloatware, specifically "Power4Gear" & "LiveUpdate".

Now this thing is starting to impress me. Network card is running as fast as the netgear card on my PC. Track-pad is working as it's designed (although I'll admit it takes some practice to get accustomed to it).

It's hard to believe that people overreacted and sent them back before even updating the software. Do realize that you are what's considered an "early adopter" if you purchase the first machines off of the production line. If you don't realize this then you are unworthy of this machine, go get an apple.

Honest reviews on ASUS Zenbook UX31E-DH72 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Ultrabook (Silver

I read a lot of reviews of other models of this laptop while I was waiting for it to arrive in the mail and I began to worry that I had just spent a lot of money on something that was released prematurely and had a lot of design flaws. Let me just say that from my experience this has turned out to be not true. Like any new laptop you have to set it up to work best for you. If you don't want to spend the few seconds customizing it to your tastes then get a Mac. Apple works great out of the box but offers the user little in the way of customization.

1) The keyboard is fine. The keys are not misaligned. Although it does take about 10 minutes of getting used to a different layout, this is no different than any other new laptop. Laptop keyboards vary due to size differences. That is all. They keyboard is nice, comfortable and works well.

2)Bad internet connection: not true. If you are running off the battery the laptop goes into a power saving mode. However, you have the option of putting it back into high performance mode. The power saving mode is fine for word processing but if you want to use the internet and get your normal performance you need to switch it to high performance mode (Fn+Space). And even if you do run it in high performance mode while unplugged you still get 4 or 5 hours out of the battery, which is pretty amazing.

3) Track-pad issues: Better than the one I had on my Dell. Update the drivers and it is fine. In fact, I didn't even update the drivers for about 2 days and it was still fine. The one initial problem I had was that when I tried to scroll up or down (a two-finger swipe gesture) sometimes I would inadvertently zoom in or out on the page. This was corrected by a simple settings adjustment.

The ONLY design flaw I would even mention is that the power button is in the spot where you usually find the delete button. Kind of odd placement, but it hasn't been a problem yet.

All in all, a great machine with a great screen, great sound for a laptop and brilliantly fast.

Hello everyone, I actually felt obligated to write a review about this Zenbook, it's fantastic!

My wife's netbook was stolen so I bought this one as a xmas gift, I think she'll be realle happy with it.

I'm a really techie guy, I'm constantly reading about technology and I also work on the field, so I know a thing or two about computers. At first, like many others, I had concerns about spending 1300+ on a computer which got many bad reviews, especially about the trackpad, but I can say that none of those are true, at least for me.

Of course it's inevitable to compare this to the Macbook Air, which I've worked on too, but I actually find this one to be a superior offer, so forgive me if I keep comparing the two.

Ok, first things first, the one I got is UX31E-DH72, it has the core i7 and 256GB SSD. From what I've read the difference in performance with the DH53, which has the core i5, is not really noticeable for the price difference, but I haven't used the DH53, so I really cannot make that assesment.

I wish the description of the product would be more detailed, especially about the items included in the box, because at first I didn't know about the adapters and I was actually going to buy a LAN adapter and the miniVGA-VGA adapter. Luckily, on the unboxing videos you can find on youtube, you will see that they are both provided in the box, which seems like a big plus to me. So, in the box you get the carrying bag, which is nice, a cleaning cloth (useful), the USB to LAN adapter, the miniVGA to VGA adapter (as well as a little carrying bag for both of them), the power adapter and the usual papers.

The box is really pretty, and I guess we would all agree that they kind of went Apple on those. Like I said, nice packaging.

The laptop itself is beautiful, made of aluminum, like you have surely read elsewhere, and it is delightfully light. I can really see someone taking this baby around all day with no complaints.

The laptop comes preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, I went through the usual first startup just to test everything and see for myself if the trackpad had any issues out of the box. I'm glad to report that it worked flawlessly, not jumpy or anything, it actually felt great. My zenbook came with bios version 2.06, I was prepared to update because I read that all the trackpad issues were resolved with the update, but like I said, I had no issues with version 2.06. I still upgraded to bios 2.09, which is the latest available from Asus. I guess I should mention that my Zenbook has the Elantech trackpad, don't know if the Sentelic would be any different.

I had previously donwloaded all drivers and apps from Asus site because I was going to perform a clean install anyway, so I did. I had to do a clean install because I needed the OS in spanish, and I prefer to install the apps I need the way I like them. In my experience Asus laptops usually come with some bloatware, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the Zenbook.

So, all the windows updates, drivers, apps and everything installed smoothly. The laptop is very quick and responsive, and I think the Solid State Drive really makes a difference. The computer starts fast from cold boot in a breeze, and it is AMAZING with the Instant On app. Instant On makes it wake up in under two seconds, and I love it, it saves battery too, so you don't have to carry around the AC adapter everywhere. What you have to do is get in the habit of closing the laptop when you are not using it, and open it when you need it again. With Instant On you are back in your desktop in 2 secs, so there is no need to have the computer running all the time.

The keyboard seems great to me too. I agree that sometimes you miss a key stroke, and you have to press a little more, but it's not something that bothers me, like I said, it's a rare happening.

The screen resolution is great: 1600x900, so it is exactly widescreen (16:9), and I've enjoyed seeing movies, pictures and working on it. Since the screen is 13.3" some might find that using 1600x900 makes the letter too small, but that's not the case for me, I like it a lot.

Sound is fabulous, for a laptop that is, it usually isn't as rich or loud on laptops, it sounds great in this.

The trackpad is awesome. I really cannot stress enough the fact that it is not at all like some descriptions out there. The multi gestures are great, you can pinch to zoom in or out, you can tap to clik or right click, you can go back and forth in a browser or book, you can scroll up and down and sideways, you can tap and drag or click and drag, you can go directly to the desktop or bring up the open windows to change apps; all with finger gestures, and being so responsive as it is I haven't had any issues with it.

And now for the Macbook Air comparisons, I find it that this involves a lot of personal taste. If you are an apple guy then you'd prefer the Mac, and if you are a Windows guy I'm sure you'll prefer the Zenbook. For the sake of comparison I'm gonna compare the DH72 with the equivalent Macbook air, that is with a Mac with a core i7, 256 GB SSD, 4 GB RAM.

They are both really light and thin, and both made of aluminum, so like I said it is a matter of personal preference. The Asus, like I said, is beautiful, but then again also is the Macbook air, I personally think that the Air looks a little better.

The screen is definitely better in the Zenbook, 1600x900 as opposed to 1440x900 in the Air. I find that viewing angles are similar on both.

Sound is better on the Zenbook.

I think the keyboard is about the same, but if you are really picky about it then I guess you would find the Air better.

I prefer the trackpad in the Zenbook, not only it feels good, I'm a Windows guy and I need my right click, it really bothers me that you have to hold CTRL and click on a Mac. Tapping with both fingers in the Zenbook is great for righ clicking.

I think the ports are better on the Zenbook, 1xUSB3, 1xUSB2, miniVGA (adapter included), miniHDMI (buy cable separately), and Mic/Headphones.

The webcam is better in the Mac, this is really a weak point in Asus, they use the 0.3 MP camera in most of their laptops. And also the backlit keyboard is nice on the Mac, Zenbook's keyboard is not backlit.

And regarding performance, I really find it dumb to compare the two because one uses Windows and the other OS X, we all know that apple lovers say the OS is much better, it doesn't have any viruses and blah, blah. I actually think OS X is a great OS but I prefer Windows, again a matter of personal taste.

And finally, most of all, I just wouldn't spend the extra bucks for a Mac, being that I can get something better or equal for a lot less. If you want a Macbook Air similar as the DH72, you would have to buy the adapters for VGA, and LAN and you would pay about USD 1800, those USD 400 make a big difference to me, like I said, I wouldn't pay the extra money for the "Apple" experience.

Ok, just my two cents, hope you find it helpful.

This laptop offers a well-balanced set of features for its intended purpose: not an ultralight machine for entertainment but something closer to a desktop PC for serious work. The display is attractive, the speed is good thanks to the Intel i3 processor, memory and storage capacity are adequate. In my case, it was an excellent value for the money since I bought a practically similar machine for $399.

I had some reservations about a machine running windows 8. After a few days of use I am reassured that it was a good choice. I started out in the tiled mode but soon discovered the Desktop mode. This is how I will use it, with few exceptions. I like to have the option of the two modes:

The windows8 mode (tiles) is perfect for playing around or for those who are best at clicking or touching after being spoiled by tablets. I think I understand the reason for Microsoft giving this mode preference: money. What used to be 'programs' are now 'apps', with the difference that they now ask one to 'accept' something or enter data to milk our personal information, and try to suck us into some 'store' to buy... more 'apps'. I have immediately removed from the start menu the tiles of the most stupid 'apps', and will only use this mode when I allow myself to be childish.

The 'Desktop' mode is the real one for productive work. I promptly installed the program "Start8" that makes the PC boot into this desktop mode and restores the Start button to its function in windows 7. After trying it out I'll spend the $4.99 to permanently use Start8.

It's not a bad computer but the keys feel cheap and the touchpad isn't smooth. It came with Windows 8 which was a pain to get setup since no documentation came with the computer. Since it doesn't have a touchscreen I would have rather had Windows 7 installed.

Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 17 inch Laptop went still wrapped in the Amazon packing box to Best Buy Geek Squad for set up (I have a 3 computer set up and repair contract with Geek Squad). Here is the Geek Squad report: "Unit was purchased from Amazon and is missing many software that comes from manufacturer. Also had diagnostics software that started at boot that put unit to sleep every 30 sec. Recommend returning to Amazon for refund or exchange."

I sure think Toshiba should send me a new laptop for saving them the trouble this model will bring to them if they don't take it off the market ASAP. It went on sale at Amazon on 11/12/12. I bought it the day prior and so was one of the first buying it at Amazon. I am not fond of buying junk that needs to be returned especially $599.00 junk. Gee Wiz how much does the Toshiba CEO make in an hour. Please multiply that by about 6 hours of my time and send me the money whoever you are!

I wanted something affordable with a big screen that I could play games on. I upgraded the memory to 8gb and I have yet to find a game that wouldn't run. Newer games have to be set on lower settings to get a good FPS, but I don't mind. It's about the gameplay for me, not the graphics.

I'm not interested in writing a long and drawn out review of this product. I mainly just wanted to state that those who are interested in this system with the IPS screen may want to reconsider if light bleed concerns them. You will find that after doing some research on the internet, IPS screens are notorious for light bleed. I was hoping the new Alienware systems would be an acceptation considering all the rave from many official reviews I had read mentioning not to skimp on the screen upgrade. My screen had light bleed across the entire bottom, which overlapped with the right side, and I also had some in the the top left corner that nearly projected across the entire screen back down in to the lower right hand corner. Also, opening and closing the screen exaggerated the light-bleed very badly. My upper left corner did have very slight play/give in it, which may have contributed to the significant amount of light bleed that I experienced. I also did a Google search and found many forums with people purchasing these new IPS panels with horrible light bleed. You will mainly notice this in dark rooms on dark backgrounds such as games with dark scenes or watching movies with darker scenes. It will also be pronounced if you are in a dark room and the computer screen is booting up. I will be returning this system (Alienware 14 w/1080p screen) since I ended up buying the Alienware 17 with 1600 by 900 screen. It has the old school TN panel. While the TN panel may be lower resolution, I won't have to worry about any concerns with light bleeding. Just my thoughts that may be worth sharing. I may come back and write a much more thorough review if I feel inspired to do so. I can say that anyone interested in the new Alienware lineup will find that the build quality is top notch in contrast to nearly any other gaming system. They have set out to be the Apple build quality of gaming systems to put things into perspective.

One other thing worth noting is that I did consider exchanging this system for the same one given the defects I had experienced. However, since I purchased my system through an outside party to Amazon who was prime eligible, Amazon could not do an even exchange.

If you have any general questions about this system, I will do my best to respond. Take care and enjoy!

This is a great laptop for the price. Sure the specifications aren't amazing but you can't expect too much for just under $400. I work in the IT field for a living, so I'm pretty demanding when it comes to computers. I had a work issued Thinkpad T410 with a core i5, and sure this isn't as nice of a computer but its also a third of the price. Not nearly as fast as my 8-core desktop, but not unbearably slow either.

Pros: Battery life (up to 3-4 hours), size, and price.

Cons: Core i3 rather than core i5 processor, only 2GB ram, and low resolution display. Occasional issue with battery not charging, have to turn off the computer, remove battery, and reinsert to charge sometimes.

Upgraded to 4GB of RAM immediately after purchasing because 2GB is barely enough to run Windows 7. Only took about 5 minutes, and cost $12.

Overall I'm happy and satisfied with the laptop!

Sophisticated Lenovo doorstop. Bought this laptop for university, it started Sluggish (I thought is was because of first boot). Once I loaded all the windows 7 updates and office 12 (2007) it goes teeth grinding slow even after upgrading to 8GB memory, i3 processor suck Do I hear and overpriced netbook with a DVD player/burner. Imagine other things for school like ebooks and additional software. I gave it to my God-daughter for high school and even she was complaining how slow it is. She now use it like a net-book after removing most if not all the software from it. Lenovo you disappoint in a major way. Save your money and buy a higher model if you like the brand. And the prices remains the same...isn't that a bummer

I am coming from using a high end Dell M6400 that I bought for work several years ago. My work involves some photo editing, a fair bit of multi-tasking across programs, and a lot of word processing. I love how light the Thinkpad is, I love how long the battery lasts and I love that I can leave the expensive M6400 at home, where it will hopefully enjoy a longer lifespan.

Despite these virtues, the new company supplied 0579a62 has me grinding my teeth. I feel like I'm working on the 486 I used back in college. Windows 7's background processes consume 70% of the computer's 2GB of RAM. It is hard to imagine anyone being satisfied with the performance of this laptop. The Windows 7 experience meter ranks this machine at 3.6 out of 7.9.

I've looked around Lenovo's site for information on upgrading memory, but the site seems to lack the resources I'm accustomed to. While searching with the model & serial numbers in the support area does produce a list of computer specs, there are no how to buy tools and part numbers are ambiguous. If I were shopping for a laptop, I would steer away from this computer, and indeed any computer that doesn't come stock with more under the hood. It is simply not worth the frustration that comes with waiting on this thing to catch up with itself.

This is a sturdy, fast, dependable, neat professional computer with very few compromises.

I get 4 solid hours of battery life while working with large files in graphics programs and connected to the internet all the time. This is how I measure battery life. Measurements with dim brightness and doing almost nothing are nonsense to me.

The keyboard layout, tactile feel, touchpad and peripheral ports are all well laid out, strong and functional. Every component works great. The computer creates almost no noise and very little heat after you update the BIOS.

Strongest characteristic is that I have used it intensively for 3 months and it has never crashed. The outside appearance is still top notch, thanks to the great quality metal finish all over, with no cheap plastic that starts scratching or disassembling after a few weeks.

People tend to look at it and ask the brand name and model, because its clean aesthetics stand out in a world of laptops full of snazzy motives and funny useless gadgets and gizmos.

I only have 3 complaints:

The trackpoint falls off. Not sure if I should glue it in place and shut up.

The 1600x900 display is outdated and there is no better display option. It lacks contrast and brightness compared to today's mainstream laptop displays. My eyes suffered initially but I got used to it. Pickier users wouldn't tolerate it and return the computer.

The speakers are cheap garbage. Even my Blackberry sounds better and louder :). Anyway I frequently use headphones, so I tend to forget about this issue.

the computer was around 400 or 450 i think, shipping was 50, which sucks, but you cant complain considering the savings your getting opposed to buying a fresh macbook. when i got it i was only slightly disappointed because the hard drive on the item on amazon said 320, the one in the computer was 160. Im not disappointed though, the mac was in very decent condition. i do also have to say the battery they sent me for it, which was brand new by the way, was a slightly different size so its very tight in the battery slot, and doesnt lock in as easily. the computer came with a bunch of good software, including a full version of office, so that was cool. overall. i recommend, for the price, you cant beat it. mac computers last for years anyway, it makes sense to buy them at half price from these guys.

The computer hums loud enough while running it can be heard across the room. While my husband was playing a game the screen went black. My husband tried turning it back on, the screen remained gray with the apple on it and the gray spinning wheel for ten minutes, it never came back up.

Then my husband plugged in the battery charger, first it was green then changed to orange. It is still charging. When my son was setting the computer up yesterday, he tried to load a CD, the CD player made unusual noises and would not load the CD. So we ended up having to buy the software from Apple over the internet. Right now I'm not happy with the computer at all, especially after paying $449.99 for the computer and another $99.49 for shipping. Right now I feel I've been ripped off good. The first time a bought a computer through Amazon it was great, even though I'm only getting a $20.00 trade. This time I am throughly disgusted.

The Dell XPS 12 is both a blessing and a bane. It is, on the one hand, a really fine laptop and convenient tablet. The screen is protected when rotated from tablet position into the normal laptop configuration and then closed; this is in contrast to Sony's excellent "slablet" whose screen is always exposed. The "tiles" of Windows 8 are a natural interface for a tablet, and speed with the 3rd gen i5 processor is adequate.

Anyone willing to pay for the admirable features of the XPS 12 should insist on buying one with the 4th generation Haswell chips. A web search shows claims of longer battery life and slightly faster speed. Furthermore, the 128 Solid State Drive seems only marginally adequate and is probably not easy to upgrade. (Amazon sold me a 256 G Crucial SSD which was easy to put into a 2 year old laptop, and that seems to be enough space. It boots up faster than my Android phone, and the XPS 12 is even faster (e.g. less than 10 sec).)

Price aside, my desire is for at least 256 G (or 512 G)SSD with Haswell i5 or i7 and probably 8 gigs of RAM. This is a rare purchase so should be satisfying for years to come. In the best of worlds, Amazon will offer a better choice soon.
