This laptop really lives up to its description: ultra portability without sacrificing performance. I'm posting this review after a two week of ownership.

Good bright display, Awesome aluminum design, bluetooth and keyboard. One open SO-DIMM slot for cheap expansion. Excellent hinges. Decent webcam and audio. Fingerprint scanner is great. Great battery life. Fast Sandy Bridge processor. USB 3.0 port removes the USB bottle neck from external devices. Great for external hard drives. 4 USB ports, more than usual in this form factor. Doesn't have a ton of blue LEDs everywhere to distract you. All leds are white or amber depending on status and aren't bright or annoying. Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The fan is quiet, and it won't set your lap on fire. Sturdy construction. Light and easy to manipulate with one hand.

The biggest issue is the bloatware. You're going to want to do a reinstall right away (bcoz lots of HP unwanted software's)the other thing it has HDD with 4 Primary Partitions (Boot, C:drive, HP Recovery & HP Tools)means you are not able to shrink your C to create more logical partition and if you need more partitions you needs to reinstall and by using HP's restore partition you'll just end up right where you started. Going to contact HP support for getting installation media to reinstall my machine according as per my wish with Hard disk Partitions. Except this this machine is really fast and great

Few Updates : If you have little knowledge of Hardware you can even shrink your C drive for that you just need to convert your C from primary to Logical and after that you can create more partitions all logical ..don't worry about loosing OS, as system boots from Boot partition, I tried it myself and now have four partition of C drive as C,D,E & F.

After updating windows i found my System goes lil slow basically booting time... found the reason is again HP bloatware... but Not an issue i got a free CD from HP for Win 7 Pro 64 bit without any bloatware... Just the OS :)....so will going to reinstall my System with OS only ..... HP rocks :)

I am the kind of person that knows exactly what it wants on a laptop. I was looking for an especific set of features and when this laptop came into the radar I research it extensively before purchase. before purchase I called Circuit City which is the vendor who shipped the item, on their website is listed as having a USB 3.0 port same as HP website for models 4430s and 4530s, the person from circuit city told me it has USB 3.0 I also got the PDF with specifications from HP website saying so.

My laptop came without USB 3.0. I called HP and the first tech support I spoke with said they had problems with the USB 3.0 parts and some shipped out with it and after some shipped out without...WTF??? they promote this laptop as having USB 3.0 then it doesnt??

after several calls to tech support, customer service (one individual tried to convince me this model never supposed to have USB 3.0) I spoke with a HP manager in customer care, she admitted that they had an issue with some parts and that there is nothing they can do. Very dissapointed.

The laptop is fabulous, very fast and great features, great screen, HD webcam not too heavy and not bad looking, nothing wrong except that I do not want to buy a new laptop without USB 3.0.

I will send it back just because of that. If USB 3.0 is not important for you this is a great machine, I had a Pro book a couple of years ago and it was problem free and very fast.

I've been using the computer for a week. So far it serves most of my needs well: fast, portable, decent battery, etc. My biggest issue is the up/down arrow buttons to move the cursor. To configure the keys into a nice compact rectangle, the designer made these buttons really small, i.e. half the size of a normal key on the keyboard. While this may seem trivial, it's a big problem for anybody who uses those keys a lot, especially for Excel (which, admittedly, I used much more than the average person). I'm constantly hitting the wrong button, because these cursor buttons are too small. Since this is a work issued laptop, I have to stick with it. I hook it up with another keyboard to get around the issue at work, but there's no way around it when I'm traveling.

Very good computer. It has a good memory, and a good capacity. A little heavy, I thought I would weigh less than before I had an IBM. However, I recommend it.

It is exactly what I was looking for. I used it at work and it works quite fast and also it has all the disk capacity I need.

I plugged on it a bigger monitor, my printer, a wireless keybord and mouse, and the scanner too.

Besides it occupies very little space and it's really light. And if I want or if I need, I can easily take it home.

I received it much more sooner than the page says, and that meant a nice suprise to me.

I am very pleasead with my purchase. Thank you.

I went back and forth between the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Which one? Will it be powerful enough? Big enough...?

Maybe a Sony Vaio would be better?

I'm a Windows software developer but I'm going back to school for my MBA and I wanted a smaller, simple notebook for papers and internet communication for classwork. It needs to be durable and I need it to work without a lot of fussing around with system bits.

After much research I chose the MacBook over the pro because of the smaller size and the fact that the aluminum on the pro although cool, can dent easily. The matte black finish on the MacBook is elegant, tough, and the build quality it top notch. Does the the black eventually get smears on it from your hands and fingers? Yes it does but just wipe them off every so often. It's not a big deal.

IMO, aside from a few points in processor speed the major technical thing the Pro gets your over the MacBook is a dedicated video card. The card in the MacBook uses part of your system memory and that's not a big deal if you aren't doing complex things like 3D Rendering or gaming. Even most photo editing tasks on the little MacBook will work well *if* you have enough RAM. I recommend 2GB or more.

My MacBook arrived and I couldn't be happier. I personally think the black is nicer looking than the aluminum model. And this thing is fast! It makes my dual Intel Windows tower at work seem pokey. The glossy screen probably has more glare than a matte screen but the trade off in weight and size is well worth it.

Also the built in wireless Airport is great and reception is wonderful. Just turn it on and available networks show up in your menu. It's really so much nicer than Windows. The bonus is that I can dual boot with BootCamp and run all my Windows stuff when I need to. I installed Neo Office (open source office suite) and now I can open and create all the documents for my coursework.

Don't fool yourself into thinking the less expensive MacBook is less worthy for general computing tasks than the more sophisticated pro. It's very elegant looking and very powerful. If you don't need the power and size of the pro, I think you'll be happy and the money you save can be put toward other things. Maybe a new digital camera?

I have always been a heavy Windows user dating all the way back to the release of version 3.1 (approx 16 years ago). I was never interested in the Mac do to what I perceived as the proprietary nature of their systems and what I thought was an expensive price tag. Here is what I discovered when I purchased this model of Mac:

1. It just works. The boot up time is less than half of what it takes my Windows laptop, and the shut down time (4 seconds) is only a fraction of the 30-40 seconds of my Toshiba.

2. It runs Windows Vista faster than my Toshiba. I still need to run a couple of Windows applications, so I went through the VERY easy bootcamp installation of Vista. It runs flawlessly and after having purchased Fusion for $79, I am now able to run Windows apps alongside Mac apps. Simply incredible.

3. Battery life is great. I can get 4 hours out of mine running in low power mode.

4. Why no card reader???? Almost all PCs now come with card readers to use with your digital camera. Why does Mac not include this??? :(

5. It does NOT require the regular restarts that my Windows systems have always required. Simply close the lid and put it to sleep at night, and the next morning lift the lid and you are back in business. I can do this with my Toshiba but start getting errors in Windows after a couple of days and need to reset. Also, my Macbook runs very cool (with little heat) in the sleep mode, thereby allowing me to put it in my brief case in sleep mode without it heating up. I could never do that with any of my PC laptops. They would always heat up.

6. No virus software needed. Happy, Happy, Happy. Surfing the internet is faster because of this. Also, opening a document in MS Word is faster because the Virus software is not screening it.

I purchased MS Office and loaded it. It runs great and is almost identical to its Windows counterpart in functionality. But, Word and Excel seem to boot up a bit slower than the Windows versions. This is one thing that I do not like.

7. I like the way the electric cord connects with a magnet instead of plugging in. This seems handier and better in design, but I wonder if the magnet will still be as strong two years from now?

All in all, I am extremely pleased with this Mac. When you compare the price with the included features, it is only slightly more expensive than a comparable PC. To me it is worth the extra $200.

Actually what is going to make this very expensive, is now that my wife and daughter have seen my Mac they are both wanting to replace their PCs as well. This is one expense I did NOT budget for.

Thanks for reading. Hope this helps

I have been a PC user for many years and have had no complaints, particularly since Windows XP was rolled out. My current HP is five years old and it was time to consider a replacement. The availability of a $1000 (with rebate) Penryn based entry level MacBook from Amazon proved irresistible to me and am glad I gave Apple a try. I understand it is not a good choice for gaming due to its lack of a dedicated graphics card.

I have been using it for two weeks now and have the following observations:

* Very snappy performance including boot up and shut down time

* Smaller screen than I am accustomed to but not a problem due to the excellent fonts

* Small size and light weight is a plus.

* Excellent wireless performance.

* Amazing battery life (never less than 4 hours at 90% screen brightness).

* Very little heat generation.

* Fan and hard drive noise is very low.

* Setting up a dual boot to Windows XP is well documented and easy to do.

* Running Windows creates much more heat and consequent lower battery life.

* 4 MEG of RAM can be purchased for under $100 but it runs very nicely with 1 MEG

* I miss the two button trackpad.

* It has a relatively sharp edge where one's palm usually rests when using trackpad

* Free software is available to allow reading Windows .wmv sound files.

* Built in automatic backup capability (Time Machine) is a plus.

* Nothing is perfect but this is pretty close given the price and current technology.

For those considering a switch and willing to learn a new operating system, I highly recommend it!

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook MB402LL/A 13.3-inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

I am a software engineer with twenty years experience developing system services for MS Windows and generic UNIX platforms. For the last ten years, my experience has been with MS based servers and workstations. The last time I used an Apple personal computer was in 1980 when I owned an Apple II+.

On a whim I purchased a MacBook running OS X 10.5.2 for my wife who has virtually no computer experience and avoids all things computer. She was not happy with my home MS Windows systems and she was not happy with the available portable computers running windows.

She has taken to the MacBook like a duck takes to water. She likes the package design, the display, and the desktop layout. She does not have the experience to appreciate the thoughtful interfaces and bundled applications that come with OS X. She just knows the entire package is enjoyable and not intimidating.

Me I like the UNIX foundation to OS-X. Knowing the internals of both operating systems, UNIX is the clear winner when it comes to reliability, durability, predictability, consistency, and security. Additionally, UNIX (with its open source variants) does not suffer from conflict of interest between operating systems and applications. One always wonders if some MS Windows quirk exists to solve a development problem in some MS application. I quickly put the terminal icon on the MacBook desktop so I could indulge myself with the UNIX shell command line any time I want ;-).

I installed a third party wireless router and configured internet services on the MacBook in a few minutes. I also added a third party optical bluetooth mouse in about thirty seconds. It took longer to install the mouse batteries than configure the MacBook bluetooth capability.

Apple has a very solid package with the current MacBook. There is little that one needs to add to the MacBook. It comes with just about every hardware interface available today. It has ample processor, RAM, and hard disk storage for average users. It comes with dual layer DVD RW. The bundled suite of applications is adequate for the full spectrum of casual computing (e.g., web browsing, email, chat, word processing, photo/video/audio processing). Apple stuff is a bit pricy but you receive the value you pay for.

If you want a good comprehensive companion book for your MacBook, I recommend David Pogue's "Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual". This book is large and contains much technical detail but is very well written. It is not for the casual computing novice that finds reading and comprehension tedious.

I have used Apple support one time and found the wait to be acceptable and support engineer to be competent, efficient and attentive. I have used MS support many times over the years and found them to be equally capable.

I have not found anything I dislike about the MacBook after thirty days of usage. My wife, however, would like the Apple logo on the lid to glow red instead of white when the MacBook is powered up.

***** 5 Stars (UPDATED BELOW)

'Nuff said about how great this computer and Leopard are.

HOWEVER, out of the box I have one DEAD PIXEL just off center which shows as a black dot the size of a small period. According to Amazon and Apple, one dead pixel is not enough to warrant replacement of a brand new computer. I know it's one tiny pixel out of a million but once you notice it you always seem to see it. It just seems to me that for $1300 you should be able to receive a computer without screen imperfections. I wouldn't care about discoloration or scratches on the case but the screen should be perfect. I don't buy Amazon's & Apple's excuse that this is acceptable: no Mac I've ever owned had dead pixels; none of my friends' Macs have dead pixels; none I've seen in Apple stores have dead pixels etc. Had I purchased in an Apple store I could have walked in within 30 days and they would have swapped it out. How can everyone I know and even my giant LCD TV not have any dead pixels but my brand new macbook has a permanent dot? On-line buyers beware.

(END OF ORIGINAL REVIEW)

UPDATE: AMAZON HAS COME THROUGH WITH FLYING COLORS AND SENT ME A BRAND NEW MACBOOK WITH NO DEAD PIXELS AT NO CHARGE. After a visit to the Apple Store (to confirm that if purchased there, they would replace it) I gave Amazon one more chance. Using the call-back feature, customer service instantly called me and without any hassle, told me that they would replace my defective Macbook. Sure enough, 1 day later my new Macbook arrived via FedEx and after staring intently at each and every pixel, I am completely satisfied. This is the kind of customer service I would expect, and makes me very happy to use and recommend Amazon in the future.

A few things I've learned in this process. If you're worried about pixel issues, as soon as you get your new computer, download a Pixel Checker program or change your background to Red, Green, Blue, White, Black (separately) and check for any stuck or dead pixels. If there is a problem and you can live with it enjoy your new computer, otherwise contact your dealer ASAP. Also, I had much better results dealing with the telephone support people as opposed to trying to resolve this by email. As long as Amazon takes care of its customers like this, I will be a lifelong user.

I wish I could change the star ratings to 5-star but you're not allowed to edit that. This is really a great computer. Super fast and perfect for my needs. Weighs 5 lbs which is fine with me not ultralight like the Airbook, but it seems lightweight enough to me. Leopard is a great OS and the bundled programs are fun and easy to use.

I have had this for a year now and I haven't had any problems. Works great and is still fast. Every game I have played on this has ran smoothly. The only disapointment is the audio bar. I had high hopes for the sound. Not good for listening to music.

I bought this laptop about a month ago and I love it. It's really fast and has lot's of memory. What really attracted me to this computer was the Beats Audio, its great for music and movies. the blue Ray player is unbelievable and movies have never looked better. The laptop also has a finger print which is great for saving passwords and keeping unwanted people away. When I first started looking for laptops i really wanted a Mac, but the price was too high. This HP laptop has it all and there are many features that are better than the Mac laptops for half the price. Overall I'm very happy with my choice and will be an HP buyer for life.

This laptop is great. Before purchasing this laptop i had read many many reviews and one of the problems most people had was that the laptop got really hot during use. I live in Jamaica and in summer it can get unbearably hot, even indoors. I find that the laptop doesn't get as hot as i expected it to and the exhaust fan at the side works like a charm. It dispels heat absolutely wonderfully. If you keep your hand just by the exhaust vent for 5 seconds, the air coming out WILL burn you. That's a good sign that the heat is actually leaving the laptop.

Another complaint was that the fingerprint reader doesn't work. Well......mine works perfectly and you don't have to pass your print over it slowly. To test the security of it I tried passing my finger over it in the opposite direction (bottom up) from what i used to set up the simple pass (top down)and it did not open. As soon as i passed my finger from top down....it opened. I also tried different finger prints to load different websites and that also worked like a charm.

I have absolutely no complaints about this computer, none whatsoever.

Got this for a great price and has everything BUT the backlit keyboard that was on the page was incorrect. Although this was a major let down the price for an i5, 17.3", with 4GB of RAM was still a great price. I had done research on this laptop before buying it and knoew that was a possibility. It is very fast and provided you use it as a work computer (with maybe a little light gaming from time to time) it should last for a long time.

The customer service with the company was stellar. The return was smooth, our credit was instant. The description stated this laptop had a back-lit keyboard. The was a must for us. Sadly the description was wrong; it did not have a back-lit keyboard so we returned it.

I regularly shop on Amazon.com because of the convenience, the reviews and the customer service. The experience was not a positive experience customer service wise. Initially based on the specs and the price I was really impressed. I confirmed the specs with the company prior to ordering so I was very disappointed to see that the laptop did not have the backlit keyboard that was initially listed in the specs on Amazon.com. Mistakes happen but the way they handled the mistake insured that I will not be a return customer. Amazon has since been updated to include the correct information but it was done in a dishonest manner following an e-mail exchange with the company that was very frustrating. At no point did they offer a resolution or an apology for the error. So the two stars is not for the product but for the seller. I gave a bonus star because after several e-mails were exchanged they did finally take an acceptable tone but I was still out of a laptop.

Defanatly a very good laptop for the money. I'd recommend you shop around. I picked this up at a local retailer for 629. I don't think you can do high end gaming on this computer though. I have yet to see this computer slow down. I love how you get 4 usb 3.0 ports. the speakers sound awesome and the mic is good as well. I really don't think you will find a computer with this much performance for the money. Plus the expandability to 16 gb ram is awesome. I picked up the coolermaster x2 notebook cooler for this thing and it works perfectly to keep it cool. The battery life is not the best. I'd say 3 hours or so. I do wished it had bluetooth but it's not a deal breaker for me. The keyboard is not all that bad. The best keyboard I ever used on a laptop was on a macbook pro but this keyboard is not bad.

I couldn't be happier with this laptop. IT ARRIVED TWO DAYS AFTER I ORDERED IT (I didn't even select or get charged for two day shipping. I guess the shipper was that fast). This is exactly what I spent about 3 days looking for driving around town to different stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Best-Buy and 3 different Staples. Staples is where I originally came across this beauty, but unfortunately they were putting things in their ads that they didn't yet have in stock. But anyways this laptop has a good processor for multitasking and downloading, it has the touch screen feature, it has a nice screen size (Unlike the 11.6" Acer V5 Aspire that I returned to get this, which was a great swap), it has a fast power on start up and shut down, the speakers are pretty good but I'd recommend using headphones if you want to get the most out of its sound, it has a nice HD display which comes in handy when I'm watching movies on Netflix, it has a great amount of storage space, it comes with Windows 8 and that's easier to navigate and learn using the touch screen feature if you're new to it, it has a great battery life especially since its touch screen I thought it'd die in like 3 or 4 hours like the Acer I talked about earlier. I got this laptop September 10th so I waited about a month before doing a review and I have to admit I've had no problems with it so far. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Ok, I've had the computer for a few days now. Out of the box it is an excellent starter system for the student. Very easy to setup and get going. Windows 8 is not the greatest, however this is not a Windows review... The touch screen is very responsive as I am impressed with the speed and response of the system itself.

I do not have an issue with the speakers as another review stated. The speakers are as expected for this price model. I would recommend this product for any student wanting to upgrade to a touch screen with the latest operating system.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a gaming system, buy a gaming system. This computer is excellent for the online college classes that I take, and great for a student. As a side note, the new Internet Explorer STINKS.... I would recommend Google Chrome or Firefox for ease of use on the internet...

I bought this laptop a few day's ago at Wal-Mart I paid $100 less than what amazon's asking price was which was a great deal. I really wanted to go for an I7 but figured I could settle for less. But so for this laptop has done everything that I could possibly want it to. I installed Star Wars: The old republic on it and the game runs beautifully. I've also ran some other heavy memory usage programs and didn't take a toll at all. But honestly since I've had this machine for a few days I can't give a better review at this time. But if you want a laptop that can run newer games and do some work related stuff on it for a cheap price go for this. The downfall is the time you will removing the useless junk that comes reinstalled, which of course all computers do. Plus I'm not a huge fan of the track pad on it, it seems to be a bit annoying when attempting to do right/left click.

I wanted a windows 7, 17 inch laptop and due to procrastination missed buying an Acer with intel chip. I couldn't find a Windows 7 machine until I came across this deal. Wasn't too turned off by the ADM chip set as my last laptop was an ADM. Ordered the machine and it arrived in three days......quicker than promised. I have been using it for over two weeks now and am extremely pleased. It is fast.................boot time is 37 seconds, flat! It just zips through everything I have thrown at it. Brilliant screen (it is bigger than my wife's 17 inch Toshiba laptop) and I love the key board. About the only things I don't love about this machine is the power plug and DVD burner are on the right side.......same side as my mouse pad and mouse. But I can get use to that. I had planned on adding to the memory, but so far, I find no need to do that. So I rated this a 5 as I am enjoying it and have no dissatisfaction.

I have been using this laptop for a few years now, and was given to me as a gift from a relative. The Acer Aspire-7560 comes with a Quad Core, 1.4ghz CPU that autoclocks to 2.3ghz, 4gb of Kingston Ram, and a 500gb Hitachi 5200Rpm HDD. It is a silver and black plastic body, which fills a bit flimsy, but is very sturdy.

Now on to my personal experience with this notebook. I had this laptop working great for a year, but then I began getting several boot errors, rendering my laptop useless. about 6 months later, found out that the hdd was dead, and easily replaced it. Overall, I recommend this laptop to everyone but expect issues with any device. jsut had to put a new OS on it, (Linux Mint 15) and got it working like new!!

My wife is going back to college and needed a laptop to handle graphic art editing. I figured she would need at least a quad core CPU and a higher end GPU to efficiently run the necessary programs. I bought her this refurb after reading the specs and positive user reviews. My research indicated that I couldn't touch another quad core unit for this price. This laptop has exceeded my expectations...very fast, nice big bright screen with good color rendering, and decent speakers. My wife has pretty much made this her primary PC because of its speed, Win 7 OS, and larger screen than her desktop. It seems to handle all programs with ease...great purchase. The only con...the vacant second drive bay (a very nice plus) is useless because of the molded plastic space filler that is molded into the drive/RAM cover. Looks like I'll be using my Dremmel to remove that soon...I plan on adding an SSD to boot from and upgrading to 8 GB RAM, as other reviewers suggested.

This is an amazing computer. It's fast, powerful, and runs everything I can throw at it (granted, I upgraded to 8GB RAM). As a software engineer, I've used this computer pretty much every day since I bought it (2+ years ago). I run all kinds of tools and applications, and I rarely have issues with the machine or applications. Highly recommended.

I bought this laptop recently to replace a 6 year old HP. I didn't have high expectations after reading about the difficulties of Windows 8 and problems with other laptops.

The negative: This Toshiba does not come equipped with a removable battery. I found it convenient to have extra batteries available with the old laptop. The battery life is okay with about 3 1/2 hours of simple computer use/internet browsing. However, the battery does drain when you simply close the screen (it dropped to 60% while closed for 24 hours).

The first time I tried to open the optical drive it didn't open. I had to use a paperclip to manually open it. Afterwards, it has opened automatically without any problems.

The positive: This laptop is fast. I'm not a gamer, so I can't say how it does with the latest games, but for everyday computing use it blows my old laptop out of the water. Webpages and software open quickly. The computer comes out of sleep mode almost instantly.

I was able to install my old software without a hitch. I am running Windows Office 2000 and QuickBooks 2003 without much difficulty. I run QB as an administrator to work at its best.

The backlit keyboard feature is useful and I like having the 10-key number pad. The touchpad is easy to use, even without the dedicated right/left buttons. There are two thin raised bars that help the fingers sense where to click for the respective buttons.

The Toshiba feels light, but sturdy.

There is little to no noise, much quieter than the old HP I used. The cooling fan seems to work efficiently as the area where my wrists rest while I type has stayed cool to the touch.

Overall, a good laptop for me. I would have rated it 5 stars had the battery been removable.

I love my new laptop. I couldn't be happier. It is taking some getting used to using windows 8, but it will come with time.

I love the back light feature on the keyboard. The screen is bright and I love the weight of the laptop, so light to carry.

Looking forward to many years with it,

When I decided to purchase the product, the first thing that I analyze was the component, after that I was happily surprised with the product it self, the format, the wigth and the prestations. Good laptop for a student, last generation processor:

Con: windows 8 is horrible, wireless will require for you to download latest firmware from Toshiba. This laptop does not have touchscreen making Windows 8 very difficult to use.

Thanks

I purchased the Lenovo Ideapad P500 for my birthday from Best Buy a while back, and I love it.

I'll list the pros and cons of this system for easy reading

Pros

*2.5 Ghz processor, very fast, can run several processes at once

*HD monitor WITH HDMI out

*beautiful aluminum casing

*comes with Windows 8

*excellent build quality

*runs cool for hours

*simulated surround sound speakers

*750 GB of storage space

*HD webcam and mic

Cons

*the trackpad is left-oriented

*the trackpad has no spacer to differentiate the left or right button, and in fact, may click the buttons if pressed too hard

*the casing can dig into your hand or wrist when using

*the Intel Centrino 2230 Wireless Card DOES NOT WORK

The Centrino Wireless cards have a reputation for being poorly made (just do a Google search), and no matter how many times you try to install the drivers, you will not be able to get a reliable wireless connection on it for more than an hour or two. The best idea is to buy a $20 USB Wifi receiver to go with it if you do intend on buying this laptop.

Otherwise, it's well worth the money you pay for it.

I've used this laptop every day since receiving it and haven't had any issues. It's super-fast, and I ESPECIALLY love the fact that it doesn't get HOT underneath, since the vent is on the side. The seller got it to me very quick with no issues. Highly recommended.

Samsung is one of the rising companies in this down economy. With the success of their cell phones and television, they have broadened their horizons to ultrabooks and notebooks. This review of the Ativ Book 9 Lite is more like a first impression as I have only played around with it for two days. On the software side of things, it is a Windows 8 computer, which speaks for itself. I am reviewing the unit itself, not the operating system, which is albeit a pretty decent one.

I switched to this from a Macbook Air. The drop off in build quality is quite spectacular. While the Air feels sturdy and very nicely crafted, the same cannot be said for the Ativ 9 Lite. It is all made of plastic and pressing on the wrist portion where the keyboard is you can tell its a pretty big downgrade. The plastic has this sort of give to it, pressing down on it will cause it to flex. It has cheap written all over it. It does have a nice look to it but the same cannot be said for the feel. The one biggest dropoff that I notice is in the touchpad. The touchpad is awful. Truly awful. It has an unsatisfying click, sometimes a right click registers as a left click and it wiggles as you move your fingers around the pad. The material it is made out of is also not very pleasant. While Apples interpretation of a touch pad was the best I've ever used; the Ativ 9 Lite has one of the worst. Vaio and Dell, I feel are both better.

The other disappointment is the screen. Understandably it is not a full hd screen (it runs at 768) but the blacks seem washed out and grey and it is impossible to open the lid without holding the lower portion of the computer down. It feels like a flimsy mechanism when its open, mostly because Samsung allows you to flip open the screen to 180 degrees, which is pretty useless when thinking about the sacrifice made on the sturdiness of the hinges. It's not all bad when it comes to the screen however. Despite its low resolution, it handles colors relatively vibrantly, albeit not black. The brightness is downright blinding and the screen reacts pretty well to light and reflections. It is also a performer when it comes to capacitive touch and reacts pretty accurately, making windows 8 a joy to use. The speakers however are very loud from such a small computer and it runs very quitely.

The battery over all is pretty decent. It lasts about 4 to 6.5 hours depending on the use, with a full charge while not being used from completely drained to full in about 180 minutes. One of my gripes with the power aspect of things comes with the charging port itself. It is very hard to pull out. So if you happen to drag your cable on accident, you'll be assured to know that this laptop is coming down along with it.

On the performance spectrum, the quad core 1.0ghz processor powers the laptop pretty well with 1.4ghz available to you (AMDs equivalent to turbo boost.) It breezes through most tasks although it did take me about 20 minutes to uninstall adobe photoshop software that came with it (not the full version obviously.) While it does perform pretty well, I'm not sure its quite something to admire as even the cheapest Windows 8 computers perform pretty well on the solid windows 8 platform. The Ativ 9 Lite also comes with a lot of bloatware. It's equipped with a 128gb solid state drive that ships out to you with about 60gb available. Norton, adobe, samsung; its chaulk full of this unnecessary "crapware" which was the first thing to go during my use of it and left me with about 75gb of free space to use.

Overall the Ativ 9 Lite is a budget computer and it should be reviewed as such, keeping in mind that the Plus version of it will run you over $600 more. I am a student and was getting sick of running dmg images of programs I needed on Apples platform. I am more comfortable with Windows and prefer it more overall which is the reason I made the switch to this ultrabook. The Ativ 9 Lite is a solid performer with very good looks. It performs day to day tasks with ease, and it is an okay purchase based on what I require from it. I purchased in white and I am happy with the color, as I am sure black will be an absolute fingerprint magnet. I can easily recommend this laptop for a person looking to use Windows 8 that can put aside some of the bells and whistles (does not have backlit keyboard) for an average price of $749, I would tell them to consider this as the go-to budget ultrabook.

If it had a better Touchpad, I can easily give this a 4 out of 5, but as it stands the touchpad is a major component of a laptop and one so poorly executed certainly deserves a deduction of a full star. If the clicking bothers you as much as it does me though, you do have the option of single finger left click and two finger right click which is a lot nicer to use in my humble opinion. I recommend this ultrabook, but not as sure-heartedly as I would want. It gets a 3 out of 5.

I did some research, and amazon needs to update their description. The "Quad core processor" is an AMD quad core processor. AMD doesn't make bad chips, they just aren't as good as intel in laptops. They tend to run hotter, and they are generally less efficient. They do however have better graphics. That brings me to my second point. The "AMD Radeon(tm) Graphics" are just integrated graphics. To me, "AMD Radeon(tm) Graphics" makes it sound like there's discrete graphics. There is not. These graphics share the 4GB of RAM.

On the Samsung website, they only rate the battery life as 5.5 hours.

The samsung website also provides insight into the processor which is clocked at "Up to 1.40[ghz]". Anything below 1.4ghz is stepping back into the realm of pre-2006 computing. It might be fine for basic tasks, but other than that, 1.40ghz is inexcusably slow.

Another thing to consider is that AMD chips tend to run hot and inefficiently. Samsung may have slowed this one down to 1.4ghz to give it "5.5" hours of battery life. It only has a 30Wh 2-cell battery. This is an extremely small battery.

I just feel that Amazon is being misleading with this vital information. This computer is far overpriced. It would fit better with a $550 price tag. For $700, you can get so much more.

I considered many PC options, Toshiba, MAC, Samsung, Acer, Dell and Sony. At the end of the day, the Toshiba, while very dependable and my current workhorse of 4 years, Toshiba has annoying function popups, the unit latch is broken and the power button will not turn off unless I push down with substantial force. The Macs, too pricey and didn't offer the features I needed in business. Acer, did not care for the layout although the features were impressive. Samsung, I really wanted the X360P but the price was never be lowered over 6 months. Dell, had that experience once before, Support was comical and frustrating. So, Sony it was. A little pricey but with the size, power and features I needed in my work, it was my choice. I'm in the process of removing many of the annoying Sony software so that I can work without sales pitches and quirky helful notes.

This is one of the best i had purchased from amazon.

The lightweight laptop, is easily portable an ideal for travelling. i had purchased the item and shipped to my cousin in USA, he then posted it back to me to Maldives. There was only one issue with the power cable that didnt support the power plug ins available here in maldives, so i bought a three-pin to support the power plug...

and now its in perfect condition....Thanks to sony, and thanks to Amazon.
