bought this laptop for my programming classes at my university, typing on it is pleasant and it's battery life is impressive compared to my last laptop. Held off on a graphics card because I wanted no temptations to game whist in class or studying, but it didn't matter because the HD 4000 is actually a decent integrated solution.

I would recommend this laptop to others because its a excellent value for it's price.

I bought this slick-looking M5-581T-6490 one month ago. Everything worked fine out of the box.

The first little trouble I ran into is the touch pad keeps doing strange zooming in/zooming out, and the mouse is difficult to control. Turns out the default setting turns on multi-finger functions. After some research, I turned it off. control Panel -> Mouse -> Touchpad, turn off all multi-finger function. After this, the touch pad was at mostt manageable, still not as good as my old laptop.

A few times when I turned on the laptop to use, instead of turning on as expected, it said, "Loading Update 1 of 40." Even AFTER I had selected the option that supposedly allowed me to choose whether or not to install updates. I had to wait about an hour for the updates to finally load, and nothing seemed to have changed or improved.

Then I installed Microsoft office, Acrobat, Visio etc. Suddenly, the laptop took a very long time to boot up the windows, and the mouse was constantly drawing in circles. Word, Visio, also slowed down for no reason. I tried many tips from online, like "disable all programs at startup", "uninstall McAfee", but none helped.

Finally, I spent $35 to have an IT Pro to run diagnostic. Bingo, a Hard Disc defect. Office software happens installed in that sector. The Video card RAM also has defect.

Acer said I can send the unit back, they will fix it, likely replace the hard drive but I will lose ALL installed software license.

The touch pad still bother me a little. I had enough with this unit, and decided to return.

Fast computer overall and fast internet response if compared with my wife's Macbook Pro. The battery life is incredible. The integrated software management features provided by Acer should improve. For example, the sleeping mode works randomly. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not. I constantly have to turn on the computer again (fast booting though). I hope Acer look into this problem and communicate with its customers. Maybe from drivers updates, I don't know. This product would be almost 5 if Acer were more careful to design integrated management features that actually work.

Bought two Acer Timeline M5 laptops a month ago.

Computer number one died with a short circuit on the motherboard after 3 weeks use. Computer smoked briefly and terrible odor.

After an hour and 30 minutes on hold with Acer warranty, given a return number. Computer back in use within 10 days. Acer refuses to tell us a) what burned and b) what chemicals we were exposed to.

Second failure within 24 hours of receiving it back-display died, case too hot to touch (can't remove battery, it's built in!)

Back at Acer for another 10 days lost service.

Computer two has an hdmi port defect, external monitor keeps losing signal. Also, case bottom has so much bow in it rubber feet don't all touch desk and it slides around while you are typing.

We aren't buying anymore Acers. Do you really want one?

11-29 update. computer video failed within 24 hours of return and has been returned for the third time! It took over two weeks, 6 phone calls and over 3 hours on the phone to get a return label this time! This computer has worked for two weeks out of two months! The only thing worse than their product is their customer service

This is fairly basic laptop I use it everyday for school, netflix, etc. It's average, but it manages to stand above similarly priced laptops for a couple of solid reasons. For one, the "IceCool" palm rest is surprisingly convenient. I thought it would get warm after a while, but when I'm typing my hands are always cool and it's nice after writing for a while to be able to experience that coolness. Secondly, it's a very durable laptop. I've accidentally dropped it a few times, and it still looks and works fine. It also has a fairly long battery life; I'm still averaging about 4.5 hours of listening to music and typing before I need to plug it in.

My only qualms are that the built-in speakers are fairly weak, but the best remedy to that is to simply plug in your headphones! This laptop is worth the price for a laptop that just gets it done. You won't be playing any graphic video games or anything, but for everything else it manages just fine.

If you can find a better laptop for this price, I'd be amazed. I received it today and booted it up. Lightning quick reflexes this thing has. I was amazed to see how nice the cooling system is. I have had my laptop on all day and I can't even feel any heat what so ever, NONE. The keys feel great, nothing on this laptop feels cheap. Very impressed, I was a long time buyer of HP Products... but I think I am ASUS for life now. Very very, impressed as I said. Look forward to using this laptop for quite sometime. I had bought it as what I thought would be a temporary laptop, but think I might end up getting another some day soon. Surprised there's not more good reviews on this really... I bought this laptop computer for an acquittance, in the first two days of usage, she experimented a couple of BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), this happened while shutting down when installing updates, also, when I turned it on the first time, and while plugged in to the wall, the computer itself shut off (My first guess is that this was related to changing the time and date, which triggered a suspended state, but still, weird).

I did a memtest+ pass without errors, and also checked the hard drive with the manufacturer's tool, no errors either.

There are dozens of preinstalled applications, half of them by ASUS, I haven't removed them all, as some seen necessary for functions like blocking the touchpad while typing.

I'm a little worried about those issues, shouldn't happen to a new user at all, but besides that, performance is acceptable, it is quiet, and lightweight for its size. I'll update any other issues.

Overall, if there weren't BSOD and spontaneous shutdown issues, this a great machine for its price.

Laptop works very well with a good price for dollar. Only complaint is the processor Pentium B960 does not have physical address extension support plus the 64bit addresses are buggy. Only 3G of the 4G expansion of ram is recognized for a total of 5G (of 6G) ram total. Hopefully fixed in kernel, but it may just be an inherent flaw in the hardware.

Was going to only give this 4 stars, but then I realized that this computer does exactly what I expected it to do and for a very good price at that. It is a quick, snappy computer that has been able to handle day to day use for the past month. I have used it for the normal stuff like internet browsing, movie watching, music listening that anybody looking for a budget computer would do. The USB 3.0 is an awesome aspect that has allowed me to use the hdd from my old laptop with this one and use it at great speeds and no problems. The touchpad is nice and big with a good texture. The size of the keyboard is nice with the numpad on the right. And, as advertised, I have not experienced over heating around the touchpad after extended use. The HDMI port is also awesome. The computer also came with minimal bloatware, and after about a half hour with revo uninstaller, I had everything that I didn't want gone for good.

The only problem I have with this computer is the laptop speakers are underquality compared to my old laptop, and even when I was using my headphones, the sound was of poor quality. Nothing to lose sleep over though. It would have also been nice to have another USB port, but again, not a huge deal.

In all, if you want a budget laptop for a college student like me, or just a good family laptop that can endure everyday use, look no further. Register the warranty and the accidental damage protection plan and this laptop should last for the long haul.

great screen, nice slim design, i had a glass of water beside my vaio and my cat knocked it over... the water went all over the keyboard. i immediately turned it off and used dry tissue to soak up what i could. i let it sit upside down for 2 hours and water was still slowly dripping out of the keys, and it still works like new! I LOVE IT!!!

I bought the Acer Aspire 5920 new back a few years back. Great feature set for the price. The keyboard has a rather cheap feel to it, but it is responsive and has a nice feel (although a little cheap).

It's a great laptop WHEN IT WORKS. Major problem with the internal soldering. Here's a rundown:

1.) After 6 months it would not power on. Dead to the world. Spent hours reading posts, trying the "reset" procedure, holding it upside down, reseating RAM, the freezer, etc. Called Acer and was told it was the motherboard.

2.) Gave up on it, figuring it was dead, tucked it away in the closet. Five months later while looking for something in the closet, I came across the 5920. On a whim plugged it in and it worked. It came back to life all on its own. Cool! How often does that happen?

3.) Then ended up getting about 2 years use out of it, until last Sunday, same problem. NO power, battery light not turning on. Took it to a local repair shop and they looked at it, surmised that something isn't seated properly onto the motherboard. Was told at that point laptops go back to their mfg. for repair. Acer repair is a flat $400. The Aspire 5920 has been out for about 3 years, (I bought mine summer '08). Not worth the repair cost whatsoever.

4.) Did a ton of research on new laptops out there. The Dell is enticing and speaks to the consumer in usnice options, glitzy marketing, nice package deals. However, all I could hear in my mind was the computer repairman telling me on my recent visit, "We love Dell around here; they keep us in business." The Sonys look great, awesome style, perhaps more of a vanity purchase? Then again Sony does have a great reputation, but not so great when it comes to their laptops.

5.) Decided to find the most RELIABLE laptop out there, so I don't have to go through this again; it's a real pain. Apple won but the price point is way TOO HIGH for the specs, besides I don't feel like converting all my software over anyway. Most reliable AND affordable PC laptop is the ThinkPad series by Lenovo. Lenovo bought out IBM's stake in the ThinkPad line, but the line is essentially still the IBM ThinkPad. Durable, dependable, a little conservative looking (they are intended for the business user, but mainstream consumers are catching on)... and surprisingly the price is outstanding, esp. on a special. Lenovo's IdeaPad line offers some nice packages, esp. for multimedia, but after lots of research I found that if you want durability, the IdeaPad is not up to the same build quality as the ThinkPad (IdeaPad is Lenovo, ThinkPad is a carryover from IBM).

6.) For $549 you can get a solid, quality product from the ThinkPad line of computers. While I have enjoyed the Acer, it is obviously not built well. Don't waste your $. Good luck!

Good for Video Editing, MS Office, and Web Surfing. The only PC game I play is Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 which runs well except for when I use night mode. The battery drains too quickly sometimes. I hate the placement of usb and ethernet ports. Another issue is the size when you want to travel with it. Overall, Decent laptop

Cheap Dell Latitude D630 14.1-Inch Notebook

I've had a Dell Latitude D630 for almost 2 years now and there's one key feature that needs to be pointed out first. It's solid. Although I've never dropped it, it has been through a lot. It's very difficult to warp the LCD screen by applying pressure to the back of the display, and the screen is recessed a fair bit from the outside edges. I've seen quite a few people crack their screens but you'd have to try pretty hard to break this one. At first glance it appears thin, plastic, and flimsy; but when you pick it up and hold it you can tell there is a strong network of metal bracings underneath the surface.

When I bought mine brand new from Dell, quite a few technical things went wrong. First the touchpad never worked well out of the box. It skips, freezes and stops working intermittently. I understand this is a big problem with Dell laptops. The other joystick style mouse works well, but after a year started occasionally drifting to the top right of my screen at slow speed so I had to disable it. I usually use an external mouse anyway. After having the laptop for about a year, a section of the motherboard fried and the computer kept giving me video driver errors, but after I called Dell they politely came to my home and swapped the defective part free of charge. I play my fair share of PC games and this thing gets hot. Sometimes the bottom of the laptop will become uncomfortable to set on your thighs so I'm not surprised the board burned out. It's important to note that this machine only gets hot when it's running a video game. It usually runs at normal temperatures doing everything else. I invested in a fan cooling pad which does a good job keeping it cool.

Other than the mouse and heat issues, it's a good machine. It's a nicely sized laptop as well. Personally I feel like it's not too big or too small.

UPDATE April 20, 2012:

Even though nobody is probably still buying these machines, I'd like to report on my D630 almost three years after my original review was written.

It has been almost five years with the D630 and it's still functioning, of course not as well. The cooling fan is not as strong as it used to be, and the machine gets pretty hot when running multiple programs or playing video (years of dust accumulation probably affects the heat sink's ability to transfer heat to some degree, no pun intended). Lucky for me I don't play video games any longer, as I now see them as a waste of time, so that will no doubt lessen the damaging impact to my hardware. Right now with only Firefox open the machine is a normal temperature. The wireless card periodically stops working and I must disable and re-enable it to get it to work again. Some of the keyboard keys have become very sensitive probably due to debris underneath, but all are still registering. The touchpad still occasionally acts up by sometimes not detecting my finger in a specific area toward the center of the pad causing my pointer to leap as I cross over it, but for some odd reason flicking it a few times gets it to work properly again, and other times it goes completely unresponsive until I restart the computer. The pointing stick stopped tracking slowly across my screen and has become fully functional, albeit awkward to use. The original battery has died and I'm currently on my second. Dell let me keep a brand new optical drive after they misdiagnosed a hardware issue (DVD drive failed to detect discs) that turned out to be another fried motherboard making it twice I've had the motherboard swapped under warranty, so my DVD drive still works flawlessly. Hopefully it won't happen again since the warranty expired almost two year ago; the original warranty being three years covering everything but the battery and LCD display. The screen is still very clear with no dead pixels.

Not much else to report besides the system's performance benefited from a OS reinstallation. A comment below mentions bluescreens, but I think bluescreens are more due to badly written software than the machine itself.

The Dell D630 is a remarkable machine. I work for a university that is replacing older model laptops with the D630. This laptop was given to me for testing purposes and I must say I enjoy the features and durability it has provided me.

The hardware is more than adequate for the needs of our students. The Core 2 Duo processor isn't top of the line but will run most operating systems flawlessly. I tested this one with Windows XP, Windows Vista and am presently running OpenSuSe 11.1. The machine I am using comes with 2 Gigs of ram but can be upgraded to 4 gig. The only time I notice any ram issues is when I am doing video intensive work while the 3D desktop in SuSe is turned on. The resolution only maxes out at 1440X900, but the clarity of the LCD screen more than compensates for that. The 4 USB ports are also a nice addition to the machine. There are other Dell Latitude's I've experienced that only provide two ports.

The durability of this machine is more than one would expect from a Dell product. With previous Dell laptops I easily pop keys off and have even cracked a screen by dropping only 10 inches. The D630 has given me a new found hope of the durability of Dell laptops. I have knocked it off the table without any issue. I have left it in my vehicle overnight (-10 degrees) and it was just fine. My children have used and abused this laptop. All it seems to require is a nice wipe down and it looks as nice as the day the machine was given to me.

The only things I would like to see improved on is a SD-card reader built in. Maybe a little better speaker set. I believe there is only one speaker built into this machine. There is no S-video port on this machine. With previous Dell's in my possession, there have always been S-video and I have become acclimated to having one on my machine. The D630 also appears to be a little heavier than what I am use to using. I don't mind lugging my laptop around but I other people I talk with say they would never carry anything that heavy with them for work. (mac)

I bought this laptop directly from dell Financial Services auction on ebay. I did not even know that they have it here on Amazon Marketplace too. Even though the description said manufacturer refurbished the laptop I received looked like new. It came with power adapter and a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD and built in Intel PROSet Wireless Card. Absolutely no bloatware is included.

Now this may not be a top of the line machine but it is pretty adequate for home and school or even Small Home Office use. The neat part is that once you boot up the machine for the first time it would automatically install Windows XP after going through some preliminary steps. It even gives you option to enter setup and configure things but you are better off leaving the machine alone to do its thing and install windows XP or whichever operating system it is bundled with unless you're techie. Once windows finishes installation you can pretty much install anything you want. I have so far installed Open Office, MS Office 2003, Firefox, Chrome, Avast Anti Virus, Trusteer Rapport security Software and many other productivity softwares and the machine boots up and runs smoothly.

It does not come with webcam so I installed Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and Microsoft Lifecam Cinema and either camera runs smoothly even on HD modes. I use Lifecam Cinema more often because it's stand is perfect fit for D630 bezel as opposed to the Quickcam Pro 9000's stand which tend to wobble.

I will advise you buy this laptop directly from Dell either here on Amazon Marketplace or on ebay where it is listed under Dell_Financial_Services. You will likely receive a laptop that will be like new but more importantly you will get 30 days warranty.

This laptop is of right price, size and specs: 14" bright LCD, 2GB Ram, 80GB harddisk space and 2GHZ Intel Dual Core processor that is more than adequate for most home, school and or Small Home Office use. It is sturdy and sleek looking too.

There is one thing that Dell scrimped on here: the tiny single speaker that is barely audible! I use an external Frisby USB laptop Speakers. I also use headphone when I am on the road. It is worthy to note that this tiny speaker belies a powerful sound card that only becomes apparent when you put on a headphone.

NB: Don't forget to switch on the wireless radio or you will not be able to use the wifi connection. The switch is on same side and next to the headphone jack. It is switched off by default. Once you switch it on it will detect a bunch of wifi hot spots including yours, if any. Select your SSID from the displayed options and enter your router's WEP Key and you will be good to go. I have at&t 2WIRE Wireless Gateway and the WEP Key is the ten digit number directly below the serial number located on the side or bottom of the router depending on whether it is standing vertically or lying on it's side. The built in wireless card is powerful. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who may be on budget but not willing to compromise on quality and performance.

Honest reviews on Dell Latitude D630 14.1-Inch Notebook

Laptop functions are average but this is probably my favorite Dell laptop. I'm not a Dell fan but knew this D630 model has great up time. Most users have them for years without issues and need a work horse that is reliable.

1) Very easy to upgrade, up to the Intel T7800 processor, original was T7100.

2) The model I have has the Intel integrated video. There are other D630 that have the Nvidia option, not for me. Nvidia has serious GPU issues with heat, conventional cooling methods don't work and in a year or so, some sooner will fail. Having the Intel GM965 is much better for this machine.

3) RAM is a surprise, I put 4gigs of DDR2 and it worked. Now I am looking at the Intel Turbo Cache module which goes in to one of the two mini PCI-e slots inside, also easy to access.

4) The last thing is the display option is selectable to higher resolution; mine is 1280x800 but if you got the money go to 1440x900. Since the display is 14.1 inch the 1280x800 is optimal for me.

My hobby is to fix these laptops for family and friends; yes I took community college courses to help with the technical learning curve. Seen many bad laptop designs which are hard to work on. D630 is by far the easiest one to maintain and upgrade. Highly recommend this model for everyday use. The Intel Core 2 Duo is still a relevant processor today, as good as the i3 or AMD mobile dual core.

I bought this laptop because I needed a laptop to carry around with me to work and school. My regular laptop was expensive, very bulky, and felt a bit flimsy, and I wanted something a bit more durable that I wouldn't have to worry about breaking, but that was still a workhorse. I work at a computer repair shop at my university, and we take in a lot of laptops. Of all of the laptops we work on, I found the D630 to be one of the easiest to maintenance. When I was looking for a work laptop, I wanted a business laptop that could handle the tasks I needed it to accomplish and was easy to repair if need be, but was still within my limited college student budget. I searched around for a while, and a refurbished D630 for about $300 was what I came up with. Everything else was either overpriced or unimpressive and old. I decided to take the risk of getting a refurbished laptop for so cheap, and I am extremely satisfied.

When I got the computer it came pre-installed with XP pro, and I decided to set up a dual boot with Ubuntu. Ubuntu installed extremely easily and all of the drivers were ready to go right away. The computer has had no trouble doing anything I set it to so far, and has exceeded my expectations. I learned that some of these machines had video card problems in which the video card would overheat and cause screen splitting, but that is only with the models that have nVidia GPUs. As long as you choose to purchase one with an Intel GPU that recall issue is not a problem.

As far as how the laptop functions and works with the user, I am very impressed. The keys feel very ergonomic and natural when typing, and the area where you rest your palms is a very comfortable texture and size. The touchpad is easy to use and allows your finger to slide along it without much difficult, unlike some laptops on which the touchpad grips your finger and makes using it more of a hassle. A lot of laptops also are made of very cheap, easy-to-break plastics and feel very flimsy, but the D630 feels more rugged and durable with its magnesium casing. I can't say anything about the battery life because my D630 came with an old battery, a risk I took when buying a refurbished laptop. I've only heard good things about how long they last when not plugged in, however, and am buying a new battery as soon as possible. The 2 GHz Intel dual core processor works very smoothly and efficiently, and with 2 GB of RAM most applications run smoothly. Overall, I am very satisfied with this laptop and feel like it is an underrated machine, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who needs an inexpensive laptop.

The intire keyboard flexes when you touch the keys. It feels like is will break very fast. No HDMI port as advertised. If you're used to Toshiba laptops and know they are generally durable, this is not like that. I can't believe Toshiba is selling such a shoddy product. I've had 5-6, this will be the last.

Tried to open/download the user manual direct from their tab and just errors, says manual located in a bad sector. I wish I could send this back but live in Latin America and it would cost too much. Do yourself a favor steer clear of this one.

When i got this laptop and started to set it up it frooze like three times so i had to hold down the power button to complete the initial setup. After about a two weeks of freezing up the wireless stopped working. I figured the freezing up would work itself out so that didn't really bothered me.But now the wireless don't work so i figured it was my wireless router so i upgraded to a better router. To my surprise that wasn't the problem. I had a computer guy i know looked at it for me and he said that the wireless card in the pc in defective, it would just dissapear and reappear when it feels like. After contacting the seller he told me that they have a 30 day return policy so i would have to contact toshiba, Wow. I am not in the country so now ill have to pay shipping to send it to toshiba. So now i just have a laptop looking at me. I wouldn't recommend this laptop at all. Be aware

I love this computer. It was password protected when I first got it, but I was able to get around it to remove it. This is my first Mac and I just love it. It's easy to learn and follow. It looks great. I got it used, but if I hadn't known I wouldn't have been able to tell. I do plan to eventually upgrade, but I don't see the need now nor do I really want to.

This was refurbished, and it fell apart quickly. First of all, they said they would put in a new battery, but they did not use a genuine apple battery. Because of that, this cause a lot of issues with the keyboard, the CPU and the fans. After apple replaced it with an apple battery, replaced the keyboard, it was working better. Seller would not help me with this at all.

After a couple more months the display went, it now is nothing but a good looking paperweight. Cost of fixing it exceeds what I originally paid for it. Again, no help from the seller. Don't bother buying lemons from these people.

I regret buying a used Macbook. After paying $400 for the actual Macbook, plus $100 for a new hard drive (since the one that came with it died after 2 months) and $25 for a new charger (since the one that came with it literally fell apart after 3 months), I would have been better off just waiting and saving up for a new one.

Did I mention that it won't read hard drives internally anymore? Because it doesn't. I have to haul around an external drive every time I move my laptop. Oh, and the battery doesn't charge anymore. So I also get to haul a charger around. It's not exactly the most portable thing now, which makes having a laptop essentially pointless.

I much prefer Mac to PC though, as far as the user-friendliness goes. So if you're thinking of switching, do it. Just don't buy used because every seller on here basically rips you off. You don't know how old and mangled it is when you get it. It could look nice on the outside but have some serious internal problems. :/

PROs: Absolutely INCREDIBLE light weight for such a large laptop. Setup was reasonably easy (except for my frustration with Windows 8 more on that below). A real DVD tray instead of a slot. Beats Audio = pretty amazing, customizable sound from a laptop. An amazing battery life (so far).

CONs: Windows 8 (more on that below) but this is overcome-able.

This replaced a Dell 17" Studio 1735 (Upgraded) running Windows Vista, purchased new in 2008 for $1100 a magical machine for its first 18 months, at which point it began overheating & shutting down suddenly whenever it was given a processor-intensive task like watching a DVD movie or running a full-disk security scan or even converting a single camcorder video or watching a YouTube video longer than 1 minute. (Bought a Logitech Cooling Pad N120, USB-Powered, Silent-Airflow Fan with Low Power Consumption (939-000345), and that helped somewhat, but still wouldn't allow a full-system scan.)

Since 2003, I'd always bought Dells but between that miserable experience and the fact that a basic Dell Inspiron we'd purchased in 2007 as a Christmas gift for in-laws was also a lemon, I refused to buy another Dell. My last 2 work-issued laptops have been HPs, and I'd been impressed by the reliability and battery longevity, so I looked at HPs this time around.

I need a large laptop because it's our only home computer and I do a lot of photo and video editing need the big screen. The Dell weighed close to 10 pounds it was a heavy clunker but I'd always just assumed that a large laptop would be heavy. This HP is amazingly light, and weighs almost as little as my work-issued 15" ProBook.

Windows 8:

I bought this assuming I could get up to speed with Windows 8 as easily as I have migrated from the first Windows, through almost every version since Windows 95 (plus all my employer-specific versions of Windows that are ever-so-different from what we use at home). Nope. It was PAINFUL and FRUSTRATING. Part of that is my fault I just thought I could "get up + go" like I always have in the past, from ancient Windows95 and 98, through Windows XP, to Vista and Win7...I just figured it out on my own. Nope. On this machine, I fought and cursed and wrangled my way through this new OS. Two weeks later, I finally looked at the Windows 8 guides that were pre-loaded on this laptop....umm, am much better now. ;-)

I've always bought DELL laptops in the past, for at least the last 10 years or so. So I was uneasy about getting a different brand. Sure enough I purchased the HP 7250 and its been awesome! The only modification I made was swap the 1TB HDD for a 240 GB Solid State Drive. It's super fast. I also added Office 2013 for Excel, Word and Outlook for my emails, and I am so glad that I picked up this PC. I'm not IT person, I simply bought the Solid State Drive and handed it to my IT department, and they swapped out the hard drives. Nonetheless, this PC is lighting fast. I also upgraded to Windows 8 PRO, and although it doesn't have a touch screen, I can do all I need with the Logitech Zone Touch T400 Mouse, which makes it like I am touching the screen. All in all I use this computer for work, as I am in sales management, so I am always working on spread sheets and a CRM system. And this computer has been great. For anyone switching to Windows 8 from Windows 7, don't be afraid, as Windows 8 allows you to toggle between the Touchscreen interface to the Conventional Desktop mode, which you are all used to on Windows 7. The only reason I upgraded was because I had my laptop stolen, but all in all, great purchase. I don't see how any other PC would have worked for me! Oh yeah, and this PC, although not stated, can be upgraded to 16GB RAM, as it only comes with 8GB. I am only running on the stock 8GB, and it hasn't shown signs of being slow at all. Everything is SUPER fast, from startup, to shutdown. Even opening files is extremely fast.

Although I've only been using this for 3 days, I'm impressed with the machine: it's fast, full-featured, and has the potential to store a lot of data, which was a big plus on my wish list. The speakers and sound system are awesome, and I've streamed movies on the big screen several times already: very impressive! Keyboard works well (a little clicky, but easy to type on), and the touchpad is very nice. Getting used to Windows 8 will take some time, but I've downloaded an app that restores the Win7 shell and that makes it easier.

HP continues to make awesome machines, thankfully.

I had originally purchased a Samsung Series 3 laptop as it was a very good price for what looked like good specs. After receiving it however I was sorely disappointed in the pathetic performance. I bought this HP Envy DV7 instead and am so glad I did.

This is by no means a small laptop. With a 17.3" screen and over 1 1/2" thick it is still surprisingly mobile. Battery life has been very good so far and I run everything all the time on the High Performance setting. I just turn down the screen brightness which is usually the biggest draw on your battery.

This machine with its i7 processor is super fast. This laptop does have a couple of components that hold it back from its potential: a 5400 RPM hard drive and built-in Intel HD 4000 video. However, I have found the HD 4000 video to be very capable. And even with the 5400 RPM drive the machine still boots up very quickly with Windows 8. It also has USB 3.0 ports for fast file transfers with compatible drives and USB sticks.

Most importantly, and I'm surprised at some of the other reviews, but I was surprised at how little extra bloatware/junk that was pre-installed. Most of the software installed is HP software for support, recovery, etc. The extra software like HP EasyRoom (an IM/Twitter application) is all very easy to identify and remove via the normal Windows Program uninstall process. The uninstalls also go very quickly with the fast processor.

Typical of most laptops any more, this laptop does not come with installation media. The recovery program will allow you to create media and will require at least a 24gb USB stick, 6 DVDs, or 4 DVD-DL.

This laptop also has the capability of installing a second hard drive if you wanted to. This would allow you to get a solid state drive to use for the OS partition and keep the 1 TB 5400 RPM drive as a data drive for all of your files and would make this machine even faster. To use the second drive bay you do require an additional drive caddy and SATA cable to connect the second drive.

While this machine may not be a full fledged gaming PC, for the average user, it is more than capable and is a lot of value for the money paid.

After making a lot of comparisons between the various laptops being offered since Windows 7 was released I found the Acer 4111 to be an outstanding buy at $479.99 through Amazon. It has so many nice features, 4 gigs of memory, 4 USB slots, a built in modem, 2.1 gig CPU and I could go on and on. It is a long list of features. I have only had it for 4 days and am impressed with it in so many ways. So far I am pleased with Windows 7. It seems pretty solid and it does have some nice touches to it. A word of caution on this model is that it does not come with backup DVD's. You will need at least 4 blank DVD disks and the built in backup program works very smoothly.

One irritant I ran into was a very annoying Macaffe (trial version) pop-up window every few minutes. I solved that by deleting the program. As the Acer comes with a 320 gig hard drive you will find that you have only about 260 gigs free. There is a lot of junk on the hard drive that could come off to free up more space.

I recommend this Acer and gave it 5 stars. I also am very well pleased with Amazon.

At first, I really liked this Acer. Great display, Win 7 runs well, everything loads quickly, startup is fast. The keyboard felt a little flimsy, but I figured it was me. Yet, instead of my typing improving as I got used to it (I'm a pretty good typist) more and more errors appeared: many missed letters, r letters coming in double, just like another user reported. In less than three weeks of use, the key for Q became stuck, and i had to flip up the flimsy little cover to get at the actual mechanism; eventually that hinged cover came off. I spent a lot of time setting this macchine up, and to think that I will have to get rid of anything personal, like quickbooks and tax info so that I can get it fixed -well, let's just say I'm NOT happy!! Never mind lost productivity because I'll have to go back to my old, slow-as-molasses XP laptop. I gave it three stars because everything else is great.

I got this last week and am generally pleased. The display is great--large and very sharp. Everything works very quickly, and there weren't too many junky programs preloaded.

HOWEVER, they keyboard is really terrible. It fails to recognize about 1 in 10 letters I type. Then, sometimes, it doubles letters. It is very, very frustrating to type on this thing. I would not recommend it if you have lots of typing to do!

I've been itching to review this laptop ever since I bought it.

I was one of the people who bought it on Amazon even before the release date. I was in need of a new laptop and was looking practically all over the internet for good deals on laptops. I almost picked a not so good laptop before I checked my email and found Amazon's message about new laptops available with windows 7.

I checked at all the computers by ACER (yes, I specifically wanted an acer because I haven't ever had problems with the Acer computers I've used). I found this computer, read all the specs, and oh you know it.. I jumped on it! Was so eager to receive it that I paid for 2 day shipping.

AT 479.99, this was a great deal, so i didn't at all mind paying the extra bucks for fast delivery. Amazon, true to their reputation, delivered this faster than I expected.

I opened my laptop's box, and it was love at first sight. Turned it on, got on the internet, and started typing, and... that was when the problem started.

The keyboard seemed nothing short of annoying! I am a pretty fast 'typer', and having to repeat practically everything i typed really got on my nerves.

I immediately knew I had to call Acer, after all, this came with a one year warranty (thanks to God). The Acer customer service tried all they could to help me 'fix' this keyboard issue (like most reviewers on here have already mentioned), but all to no avail. I was eventually told to send in the laptop for repair.

I had to spend additional bucks to send in my laptop to the Acer office in Texas. I wasn't getting mad though, cos apart from the typing issue, I had already fallen in love with everything about the laptop... and windows 7 was just so lovely (Well done Windows. Don't worry about what that Modern-day, hip dressing dude says about you..lol)

Anyhoo, I now have my laptop back, and the keyboard is working PERFECTLY! I think if I found this laptop at the current price Amazon is selling it, I'd close my eyes and still buy it. It's worth every penny (Then again, If you think about it... original price + 2 day shipping + gas price to staples to ship it back to acer + shipping fee kinda all equals this current price). And worry not if your keyboard is misbehaving, Just send it in back to ACER.

I know I've said enough already, but I just wanna add, the huge screen is a big plus when watching movies, videos, etc.

The numerical pad is a bonus. I thought it would hinder my typing, and take up unnecessary space, but it is not.

The Webcam is Awesome.. so clear and works good with skype! The microphone is loud too, and speakers work great..

The mouse pad was slightly getting on my nerves, but all that resolved when i disabled the extra gestures, by clicking on Mouse from control panel. I also removed the plastic cover on the mouse pad (the one with the multi-gesture touch pad picture on it), and all these changes helped.

Ok. That's about it.. :-)

I ordered this laptop the day Windows 7 was released, and so far I am quite happy with it. Maxed out RAM (4 GB), Super-sized hard drive, dual-core Pentium (this is Intel's NEW line of Pentium CPUs), nice display.... Video is integrated but it's plenty good for watching DVDs, online video, web surfing, photos, etc. Windows 7 runs fast and slick on this bad boy.

Now, here is what ANNOYS me:

1. The keyboard blows. Acer has tried to imitate the new, flat-style keys (like Apple, Sony), but they seem to have it all wrong. The key placement is funny and I find the keys to be flat, crowded, indistinct, and difficult to get used to. The result is more typos. The keyboard probably won't be a deal-breaker unless you're planning to do lots of typing, or write a novel. Since this is a wide laptop, they've included a numeric keypad. I could do without that, but others will find it handy.

2. The track pad. The good: it has a button which allows you to easily disable it. The bad: If it isn't disabled, your hands will constantly brush against it as you type....hence even more typing errors. I disabled much of the multi-gesture functionality and that helped quite a bit. (Another tip: Get a good wireless mouse (such as the Logitech V450 Cordless Nano Laser) to use with this.)

3. The hard drive makes a distinct CLICK sound when it parks the heads. At least, I *think* this is what is happening. I'm curious if others have this same clicking sound? Write comments! If it's the hard drive "click of death" I'd like to RMA it with Acer...if not, I can probably ignore it as it's only once in a while that it happens.

Other than that... Excellent value for the money. It's on the large side. Make sure you buy the right-sized case.

I was looking for a machine to replace a MacBook Pro that was horrible at running Linux (see notes on Linux below if you are buying this and considering putting Linux on it). I was considering going with a Lenovo, but if you want a quad-core processor you have to bump up to a machine that is over an inch thick and weights over 5 lbs. As a grad student who is constantly on the move, both around campus and in the lab, I wanted to find something slimmer but just as powerful. I found it in this machine.

Pros:

Display Amazing 1080p display, with IPS so that other viewing angles still work well. It rivals the quality of a Retina MBP, and looks much, much better than my lab mate's Lenovo T430.

Discrete graphics card With an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE, with 1GB of memory, it can handle what I throw at it. I work in computer vision, and it handles 3 simultaneous Kinect inputs in real-time, and CUDA works well on it. On the gaming side, I tried my old Guild Wars 2 account, and got ~40fps on medium settings.

Full size keyboard with numberpad I love having my numberpad, and I use it often. Not many laptops tout this but for someone like me it is a godsend. The backlit keyboard is nice as well, and the keys are visible well in the dark even without it due to the fact that the keys aren't black (I'm looking at you, old MacBook Pro).

The "assist" button As I set up my machine to dual-boot Windows 8 and Linux, this button is much. much better than waiting to hit the proper key to change boot sequences/enter BIOS.

Design The machine is gorgeous and has a great aesthetic value.

NOTHING IS PROPRIETARY! A big reason I moved away from Apple. The machine is not locked down in any way, and everything is accessible if you know where to find it.

Cons:

Bezel flimsiness The bezel and screen are rather flimsy, but this is handled well if you use two hands on each side when moving it, or one had at the top center. Grabbing it from the sides tends to bend the screen a bit, which is a little concerning.

Battery life I can get roughly 4 hours out of the machine in Windows 8, and 3 in Linux. A little more would be nice but I always have my adapter with me.

Notes on Linux:

If anyone is considering getting this machine to run a distro of Linux, it works very well. I dual-boot Windows 8 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Everything works well in Linux with a fresh install, and it only needed a few tweaks any laptop would need. There are two ways to dual-boot this machine: the first is to simply switch between legacy and UEFI boot in the BIOS, UEFI sending you to Windows and legacy to Linux. However, with some tinkering you can leave it on Legacy and use an EFI booting tool to be able to boot from GRUB, which I am doing now.

Overall, I'm very happy with this machine, and am currently writing this review from it. It has a fast boot time, good speed, great performance, and a little bit of a wow factor with the design. If the battery life was a bit better, it would be perfect. However, better battery life would equate to more weight so I'd rather stay with a lighter machine.

My criteria for the laptop I wanted involved a conflicting set of specifications, which resulted in few options. Till this very day, I have yet to find another laptop being sold which comes as closely to matching my criteria as this one. Basically, I wanted a powerful machine I could be productive on, which was simultaneously light enough to carry around (and pretty enough to look at). After first buying a Dell XPS15 (L521x), and later deciding to return it, I have been very pleased with this laptop, especially after installing a SSD (Crucial M4 256GB, btw).

Pros:

Display quality At 1080p, of the IPS sort, there's almost nothing negative that can be said about this display. Some users have noted that the reds appear orangish, but for me it wasn't noticeable. I may have been either lucky or this just wasn't high on my priority list. The colors are vivid and the viewing angles are spectacular comparable to my Thinkpad X61 Tablet, which also had a high resolution IPS display. 1080p set the real bargains apart from the phonies (aka most ultrabooks and their pathetic weaksauce resolutions).

Dedicated graphics GeForce GT 640m 1GB. While it uses the slower VDDR3, but gaming on this laptop (I play SC2) has been no problem for me. In addition, there is a bios mod floating around which doubles the speed of the GPU (from 500MHz to 900MHz, with no increase in temps or voltage), though the actual performance difference was not noticeable to me.

Backlit keyboard with numpad I felt that the numpad was one of those infrequently used, but very necessary when needed devices, and this laptop comes with one. It was perhaps the largest factor in weeding out most laptop candidates from my consideration (judge me if you want). The keys are chicklet style, which was a first for me. Adapting to it wasn't that big of a deal.

Size and Weight this is just about the lightest and thinnest laptop that had all three of the previous criteria. It is 4.4lbs and less than an inch thick. Previously, the Dell XPS15 was also less than an inch thick, but was 5.7lbs or more. In addition, the viewing angles on the Dell was quite a bit poorer.

Accessibility and Upgradability the battery, hard drive, and one stick of RAM are easily accessed. This made it very convenient to upgrade to an SSD and to slap more memory in. Same thing can't be said about most ultrabooks. Ultrabooks = 150% marketing 50% quality

Cons:

Battery life this is the biggest deficiency for this laptop. I would have preferred it to be 5+ hours, but at Hardware and Sound > Sounds > Select Realtek High Definition Audio > Configure > Next > Check the box "Front left and right" > Next > Finish. However, even after this they are not that loud.

2 } Webcam. A disappointment, especially since I freaking love the my Sony TX9 camera ... fantastic photos and videos. However, if you want to improve the framerates of the webcam, turning off the "low light compensation" (webcam settings > camera control tab > uncheck the box). I noticed a tremendous improvement in framerate

At the beginning I was very dissapointed because I was not able to virtualize some windows server 2008 R2 in this Sony Vaio because of some SONY restrictions, but after reading some blogs on the internet I came to know that I could update the BIOS and then edit it in order to enable virtualization.

I did so and now work on this laptop very nicely.

It is a great machine, very fast, light in weight and excellent performance.

I just love it.

I bought this computer from Amazon Warehouse Deals as Used-Like New. Amazon.com did not have any new ones available. When the product arrived, I found that it came only with a power cord and laptop itself (none of the documentation was included and it came in a brown box). The laptop did not have NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, instead it had a Intel HD Graphics 4000 (someone had replaced it), and the battery life is half of what is advertised. Also, the optical drive makes a very loud noise at start up time. Apparently, Amazon Warehouse Deals Used-Like New computers are used for at least 6 months maybe more. It appears that Amazon Warehouse Deals does not have any quality control measures in place when it comes to checking used products before placing them on sale.

If this computer was new, I probably would have given it a 5 stars, but considering the condition that I got after paying $850 it only deserves 1 star.

the product is intended to be good with all bells and whistles too many features has overblown and but there are too many problems to be a quality product

Gesture mouse feature too often stops working and i have to reset the laptop to get the functionality back. Obviously software malfunction. It makes you get used to it and once it frequently stops working it is annoying and satisfaction is hindered.

Same with wireless radio: it frequently fails to connect to 2.5GHz router and i have to reset or manually connect everytime i boot. Problems I dont see even in less prestigous brand of laptops. In overall i would rate down on this after paying premium price.

Windows 8 sucks and Secure boot in BIOS setting will prevent installation of most of earlier and alternate operating systems including 7, in the BIOS it offers to disable the secure boot however it still rejects the Win7 installation CDs. Obviously the BIOS is not functioning as intended.

Screen dimms for no reason. Really bad for eyesight and frustrating. On power setting, no matter how many times you tell and set the screen brightness to maximum it relapse back to some kind of predetermined dimmer setting which pisses off. I had to contact customer service to figure out how to set it permanently and it was some kind of VAIO specific setting in the crapload of apps that came with no laptop which is easy to forget. Few months later, system became irrecorevable and I did the recovery. After the recovery, the dimmer setting sets back in like haunted and by this time, you already forgot the permanent setting. Second time you contact customer service. I hated it.

I wanted something affordable with a big screen that I could play games on. I upgraded the memory to 8gb and I have yet to find a game that wouldn't run. Newer games have to be set on lower settings to get a good FPS, but I don't mind. It's about the gameplay for me, not the graphics.

ASUS makes quality products and this notebook is a reflection of its quality. The ultrabook is very thin although little heavy (due to glass screen). Connected to my existing router in a snap and after about 30 mins of Windows 8 update it worked flawlessly. The display is crisp though not full HD. The batter life is quite good and I am able to get about 4.5 hours consistently. The touchscreen is very responsive and very user friendly once you get used to it. The performance is very good. I purchased external DVD-RW add on for a small price. Overall an excellent laptop!

I am an information technology professional who relies on ASUS products. This ultrabook runs smoothly, boots up super fast, it has a responsive touch screen and is very light. I had a big and bulky Toshiba Qosmio desktop replacement laptop that weighed about 19 pounds. I gave it to my sister and decided to upgrade to a current laptop. The ASUS VivoBook V500 seemed like the obvious choice for me.

Windows 8 runs super fast on the machine. The 15" HD screen is super sharp and easy on the eyes. The chiclet keyboard is very comfortable for typing.

Worked nicely right out of the box. A slight complaint about shipping though. Box was left on the. front step in the open. When the rain. Outside box was soaked, inside box was dry. Whew!!!

This is a great notebook! It has an amazing sound and a extremely bright display. I have an older Hp laptop that has a 17" screen. The screen size made it difficult to transport, so buying this 15.6" notebook was a good decision. This Asus also has a fast start up, and is very responsive during multi-tasking. I am still in the learning process for windows8.

This is the best laptop for student, staff.. The design is very beautiful. this laptop is thin and light. You can bring it everywhere, sometime I carry it on the bed. The system is strong. you can run games and every normal programs. The interested point is the speed loading windows, it's very fast. With windows 8 and touch screen. You will found some different experience. In short, this laptop is awesome !!!
