I researched for 6 months before choosing this IBM. Great value, solid notebook. Love the keyboard and the access IBM help. I have called tech support for information and help with software installations and driver updates and they were very good and patient with all my detailed questions. This is important to me... to have good tech support available. This T41 comes with a 3 year warranty.

IBM's website has excellent support. I love the automated stuff where it analyzes your computer and tells you what updates you need. Sometimes their driver upgrades are more for the IT person. But, just download their software installer and it works great. However, you must focus...if you want to understand what you have downloaded. Not totally for the novice. Tech support walked me thru it once and I was on my way.

So far so good after only a month, the T41 rocks! Particularly the higher-end graphics card, glad I went for that. I can tell the difference when comparing with my desktop LCD.

The CD burner works well and I use Nero 6. I had been using a 4x burner on my desktop and this one writes at 24x...what a difference.

If you are contemplating a notebook, consider this one. Pay the extra bucks and go with IBM...very glad I did!

I've had a T-41 for about two years. It's been back to IBM three times for new motherboards when the video went out. It's been back once for a new wireless card. A second wireless card is coming via delivery service as I type. This time I get to put it in.

I've had several Thinkpads and love their functionality. IBM's service people are friendly and helpful. The problem is that I'm getting to know the guys in Atlanta way too well.

I asked IBM to replace this T-41 as a lemon. They responded by giving me an extra year of warranty. That was nice, but every time this thing goes down, it costs me lost time, and for someone who is self employed that is a bad thing.

Back in 2004 I did quite a bit of research before settling on a T41 (from newegg.com). I got more RAM for 768M total. Over four years later it is still going very strong.

Great keyboard, light (even today), thin (even today), fairly fast, well-built screen tilting mechanism. Quiet, doesn't heat up too much.

If you're a vi user, you probably won't like the position of the Escape key (you can remap it to F1).

It took about three years for the battery to become unusable (I recently got a new one for about).

The built-in wireless antenna stopped working and I got a new one from Lenovo support (for free, it was still under the 3-year warranty), but the old one fixed itself as soon as the replacement arrived and has been working now for a few years since.

The left 25% of the space bar don't produce a space when pressed --started happening after around three years.

The left button on the lower mouse controls stopped working --started happening after four years.

I've been using a Macbook Pro for work, and every time I open the T41 now, it's such a relief to be able to tilt the screen as far back as I want.

(a) Best keyboard ever made for laptops, (b) Decent speed, runs Office 2007 O.k., (c) Acceptable graphics (ATI 7500) or good graphics (ATI 9000 / 9600 / FireGL, the latter 2 can play Far Cry 1.0), (d) Thinklight is very useful on overseas plane flights, (e) fits perfectly on all airplane tray tables, (f) Outstanding battery life with CD-battery + 9-cell (5-6 hrs if you dim the screen), (g) It actually sleeps and wakes up properly unlike 50% of all laptops, and (h) You can just grab it and run to a conference room, yanking it out of the minidock, and it will sleep properly, unlike newer (T60, T400) machines where you have to hit a key first !!

DONT buy anything with less than 1.8 Ghz processor as the 1.7 Ghz and lower have a smaller cache(2MB vs 3MB) and are about 33% slower.

I have used about 4x of these machines at work over the past 6 years. I just got my 4th machine so each machine lasts about 2 years. The typical failure is a really bad/sticky key (1st), a failure of some buttons on the synaptics track pad (2nd), a hard drive failure (3rd), or a failure of the power-port male plug, making it difficult (but not impossible) to charge the unit. With the exception of the hard drive failure, NONE of the failures were catastrophic "I cannot do any work right now" type of failures, so the system is robust.

The IBM repair manual is fantastic so I buy new parts on ebay and repair it myself. I've replaced hinges(very hard), screens(very hard), keyboard(easy), touchpad(easy), fans(medium you need CPU paste). The keyboard in particular takes 120 seconds to replace as it's just 5 screws and it pops out.

This is the first ThinkPad I bought for myself, the other three that I have been used in the past eight years were provided by the company I worked for.

Decision making was easy:

1. Overall lowest cost: after deducted the costs for 3-year warranty, high resolution LCD screen, Windows XP Pro, slim and light-weight design and quality material.

2. Proven reliability: this means there won't be extra costs to burden my 3-year ownership.

3. Excellent technical support (I called IBM technical support once in August, one month after I got T41, and was surprised that the tech. support rep. picked up the phone right the way and guided me step by step to go through the problem I had. They even followed up with a call to confirm the problem has been solved!

Yes, I am more than happy to recommend IBM ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) to you. However, the best buy is with $100 rebate from Amazon.

ACER AO756-2840 11.6" Intel Celeron Processor 847 2GB DDR3 Ram Review

I read the reviews others have left for this model and I felt compelled to come to it's rescue. I didn't buy this netbook from Amazon. I got on sale from a major retail store. The reason I purchased The Aspire One is because my aged Eee PC 900 Linux has seen better days. I happened upon the AO756-2840 while browsing the computer section of a store and the price was good and being familiar with Acer products I jumped on it. When I got home I looked up some reviews for the 2840 in particular and found that besides Acer's website the only other place I found any were here. Acer's website had glorious reviews (of course). The reviews here weren't so hot. My heart sank. I decided to try the machine and form my own opinion. (Not to toot my own horn but I've been building and using PC's both as an enthusiast and professionally over the past 27 years. So I do possess a little technical knowledge when it comes to these matters.) From a hardware standpoint what you get for your money is far worth it. A 64 bit dual core processor running at 1100Mhz, 2 GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Intel HD graphics, etc.. You can see the specs above. On further investigation I found via using SiSoft SANDRA that the machine does in fact have 128 MB of dedicated video memory. This is not found in the specs. That brightened my day a bit. I should also mention that the 2840 has UEFI. The machine I purchased came with Windows 8. To my surprise there wasn't a whole lot of bloat-ware installed as I've experienced with other products. This was my first experience with Windows 8. And I have to say I do not like it. Thus the 4 stars. The dumbed down "Apps" page gets in my way and does not always find what I look for when using it's "search" function. Windows 8 and it's apps seem to me as those made for mobile devices such a tablets or smartphones (Android-like.). Also Windows 8 does not include a mail reader that supports POP mail. I found this to be a major put-off. I wound up installing Thunderbird, which I use on my desktop PC anyways. I also wound up installing a third party application to make Windows 8 behave like Windows 7 with it's Start button and menu. This provides me with a much friendlier user interface and something that I am more accustomed to. (I use GNU/Linux as my main OS and Win 7 for gaming.) I've run the machine through it's paces and I've found that for a netbook with low specs it performs better than I had hoped. Once the machine has booted it's pretty perky and opening applications doesn't take long at all. In all fairness for the given hardware this thing performs much better than I anticipated. You can multi-task and an acceptable rate of performance in my opinion. I should also mention that I was able to get 5 hours of battery life without forgoing anything. Buyers just need to be aware that this is a "NETBOOK" it's not a laptop and it's not going to perform like one. But it does do what it's designed for very well. You can surf the web, read and write email, write documents and presentations, do some light gaming on a machine that comes in a pretty small package. I should also mention that the 2840 has approximately the same specs as the 2626 (Except that the latter comes with 4GB RAM.) and has much better reviews. (The 2840 probably hasn't been purchased and fairly evaluated by Amazon customers due to the reviews it has received.)

I've been using the AO756-2840 for about a week now. I had intended to wipe the hard drive and install GNU/Linux but being that it does what I want I'll leave it as is. I really enjoy this little machine!!

(BTW.. I've tested this machine with various Debian GNU/Linux distributions and everything works fine right out of the box. If you choose to venture that way make sure that the distro you choose supports UEFI!)

In my humble opinion the AO756-2840 is a good product and a good value. Again I'll mention I gave it 4 stars because Windows 8 UI and Mail are lacking. Hardware-wise I would give it 5. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this model to a friend or anyone looking for an inexpensive netbook at a decent price.

Well for $300 I wasn't expecting much, but it does the job. It's great for just browsing the web and watching youtube or netflix. It lasts a modest 3 hours on battery.

Pros: Has 2GB ram, while most other netbooks come with 1GB. Decent sized harddrive, and comes with Windows 8.

Cons: The Celeron processor is a little on the slow side if you try to do a few things at once.

Let me start off by saying that I had high hopes for this little machine. I understood from the beginning that the computer's specs reflect the cost, so I expected there to be some quirks. This is my first Windows 8 machine, so there was a slight learning curve but I had it down in under a day. Aside from the awkward setup that Windows 8 is based on, this machine is SLOW, WEAK and DIES quickly. This Acer Aspire One wishes it could hang, but it just cant. Even simple tasks can make this computer freeze up, resulting in lost time. When this computer gets overwhelmed and has a fit, you are not getting anything else done for at least 10-20 minutes. Depending on the amount of work you were attempting to accomplish, the machine might even restart itself on it's lovely 12 minute restart cycle. I mean that too! This thing just sits and sits, never giving a consistent restart time. Even with the machine working flawlessly, my internet will just drop out and that's it. Sometimes it will automatically reconnect itself, but mostly I end up having to restart the machine. A return wasn't an option, so I headed down to the nearest Wal-Mart that carried this model on display. I brought my cord with me and managed to find a plug and fired the display unit up. Someone had already set it up, so I was good to play around and see if my computers experience was anything realistic. Sure enough, not even a few minutes into me testing my personal scenarios the machine locked up. This time, not even long presses of the power button could get it to restart. I couldn't take the battery out of the display unit, so I abandoned my mission feeling like this Acer Aspire One is really just a POS that I happened to buy. For the money, it's just not worth it. I had a smaller, Atom powered, Windows 7 netbook that out performed this Windows 8 machine all day long. I just needed something more and thought the Acer would have provided that. People, don't end up like me with an Expensive Paperweight that will sit on craiglist until the end of days... Stay away, trust me.

This laptop has been the best of 3 I've tried. The "business class" laptops are built sturdier (like they should all be bu not the 100% plasticisized feel). The mesh metal matrix encasing the display is light and strong... not that uncertain feel of brittle casing crunching in between your fingers when you need to do an "emergency grab"! The graphics are NVidia. I felt uncertain about that, since Nvidia had to settle a class action lawsuit related to defective GPU's in this type of laptop model, however graphics are steady and consistent.These defective graphics processors seem to have placed in any number of laptops.I found them in a Dell Latitude 620, much to my dismay. Perhaps the vendor corrected this prior to the sale . On that note, SWM Electronics Recyclers took care to optimize this unit to it's full potential. That's been a most pleasant surprise. There are no post-market optimizations I expected to have to do myself. I'd certainly seek this vendor out for repeat future purchases The unit arrived with a SSD, additional 2GB RAM to allow for a 64 bit Win 7 Pro experience "out of the box". The 2.2 G.Hz. Intel Processor allows for a smooth, fast, seamless 64 bit OS flow--nice!. (I'll delay loading Linux for a while!) Linux users-the Thinkpad is reported to be highly adaptable our favorite distros. I'll update this post someday after an Ubuntu Gnome install.

The BIOS and CMOS are well plotted out and readily accessible with the blue "ThinkVantage" button .The 3 USB slots and 1 SD card reader, and audio jacks have extra reinforcement to give them longer life. Keyboard is nice sized, responsive. No cheap construction noted. Some critics complained of the IBM imprint on this model, however I find it to be well thought out for a laptop-not just something slopped together to end up on the scrap-heap a few years later.(There's nothing like planned obsolescence.) This unit does not run hot. Sitting on top of my thigh doesn't make me feel like I'm going to fry. (my Toshiba, does that well.)

The laptop worked for 2 hours and then the SSD died. I took it to repair and the guy told me that somebody opened it and replaced the 256 GB with a 128 GB SSD (which obviously was not even good because it died in 2 hours of normal use). If I could give it less than a star I would.

Apart from windows 8 which I have every intention of removing, havent had many complaints. it is a bit slow and sticks when streaming sometimes ( what you're seeing and what they're saying dont match up). The mousepad stopped working after 4 days so I had to get an external mouse.

I had done quite a bit of research before deciding to purchase this laptop. It was ranked the Highest in Consumer reports, and all the reviews looked good...

After 2 weeks, the hard disk crashed and had to be replaced.. Needless to say, I was quite upset, since everything I had just installed on the computer, and all the data were lost...

HP Support was better than I expected, because their service usually leaves a lot to be desired.... The only problem was that they shipped a blank hard drive with no recovery disks.. After 2 shipments I had what I needed, so I installed the drive and got the system back up and running...

Not what I would expect from a "so called" top of the line product.

My only problem with this laptop is that it shuts down in the middle of productivity because it gets too hot. My question is,

i love this laptop, a powerful processor, 4GB of RAM expabdable, a good hard drive... but this thing gets insanely hot in a very short period if time... i have 6 months with it, and now i think i need to replace the therm gel on mi processor, it boots up and in a period of 10 minutes it gets up to 94 degrees Celsius. that right ther is unacceptable... also when it goes to hibernate and then it boots up it freezes, or lost conection and has to be rebooted for it to react...

this laptop has great performance, if youre not into gaming... on the times that this laptop stays under the 75 degrees, once i start a simple game like unreal tournament 1999 GOTY, it heats up in terms of seconds, also with andry birds for pc, thats just crazy, considering that i bought it a cooler master chill par with 2 6" fans located at the hotest points of tthe machine...

it gets so hot that typing gets anoying so im gona end my review here... think about other options, if i had the money i would trade this for a newer model or even a toshiba... ( my dream is a macbook pro BTW those stays under the 37 degrees... just to compare.. )

Just replaced my desktop after it crashed yet again. Set up was very easy and took less than four hours to copy over all my files and install everything. Keyboard is awkward and taks some getting used too. Really wanted illumiunated keys and was disappointed to learn this did not have it but I forgot to look.

Caps lock button too big. Shift key too small. Wish it had a seperate number pad. The coulmn of buttons on the left is a pain in the but, I keep hitting the DVD button by mistake.

The touch pad works well and is hidden but the buttons are too far apart and hard to click.

My first windows 7 experience but so far I like it alot. Screen picture qualtiy is great.

Recommended but would have looked at the key board a bit more closely.

Dell Inspiron i15N-4092BK 15-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

I have been buying Dell computers for years. This is my fourth Dell laptop and I've had 3 of their desktop models. I know this is not their top of the line or even mid line, but I'm currently a student and, well, you probably know about a student budget.

Anyway, it came with tons of Dell programs installed which I don't need because the hog the memory and take forever to boot. But my real issue is that it keeps dropping the wireless internet connection. I bring up a site and surf around conducting my studies and then i click a link and it loads and loads and loads and never finishes loading. I have a feeling it is McAfee, preloaded of course (how else would these companies make money), which I will remove as a test. The point is that I should not have to tweak a brand new computer to make it work at all.

My mom and my sister each bought the less expensive Acer from Wal-Mart and they have had no issues, even on my network. The outside of the computer is better quality on the Acer as well. I have always loved Dell, but maybe its time to try something else.

My parents were in the market for new computers because they really needed new ones. They were still using HP desktops from 2001... They purchased two of these through my account here on Amazon for the free two-day shipping. Neither of them are tech savvy, so I helped them set up their new computers, transfer their photos, etc. This is a simple process with a USB flash drive or other external storage device. Considering what they were coming from, they are very happy with how fast their new laptops are. (I have a custom PC I built with Corsair SSD's in RAID 1 so....it is hard to get any better than that. These are a lot slower than that, but decent for the 600 dollar price tag in my mind).

For being in the $600 range, this laptop is pretty good. The boot up is a little slow, but that is normal considering the 5400 RPM drive. The machine will slow down when multiple programs are trying to queue the HDD simultaneously, however there is more than enough storage for whatever they want and need to put on their computers. The battery life is about average; 3-4 hours depending on how you have the machine configured.

Both computers had no defects from the factory and Amazon had them packaged pretty well as usual. The Core i5 is more than enough processing power for what they are doing with the computer(s). I mean, common, a Core 2 Duo would be more than sufficient for word processing and checking email. My dad runs Quick Books along with a few other business programs for helping him manage his business, and the i5 has absolutely no problems running those programs either.

They wanted a model with a somewhat large amount of RAM from the factory so I would not have to open it up for upgrades very soon. Six GB of RAM is not the largest amount, but it is enough for the run-of-the-mill, everyday tasks. For some reason they do not want to trust me with opening up their computers....yet. I am in school getting an IT degree at the moment, so maybe they'll change their mind when I am certified; I don't know...

There was one difficulty with these laptops; both machines had this issue. This laptop comes with a 30 day free trial for McAfee's software. I decided to start from scratch and uninstalled the trial version. My mother still insisted on using McAfee Security Center where I recommended Norton, and while I was attempting to download and install McAfee's software (which I did several times), neither machine would accept the download and install attempts. She had just spent the $100 for a two year subscription too. I ended up having to call the McAfee customer service department, and they said Dell has a firewall on these machines that will not let you install third party security software unless it is through Dell. I have never heard of this before, and seemed like a false explanation from their end. In any case, I had to let them take control of the computers remotely to get McAfee's software installed. It took an hour and a half on the phone with a guy who spoke rough English to get them both up to speed with security software. Not terribly bad on McAfee's end, I think.

Anyway, without that minor hiccup trying to get McAfee installed there were no issues; not a single dead pixel on either machine, etc. I have only bought and worked with these new laptops from Dell, and an ASUS laptop which is for my personal use, and like my ASUS, there were several useless programs pre-installed. I hope this is not becoming the norm, but getting rid of the pre-installed stuff you do not want is easily taken care of through the Programs and Features in the Control Panel. The sound is not that great, but that is normal for laptops in my experience. A nice pair of headphones that can fix that. Ultimately, this is a pretty good machine that will serve any general purpose needs. But if you can afford it, I would still recommend an Ultrabook.

I'm not sure what all of these other people on here are complaining about. This laptop is outstaning! It's been flawless and lightning fast for me ever since I got it! You won't find a better laptop for the money. In response to one of the previous reviews, there really isn't any bloated software on here from Dell at all. I highly recommend this laptop.

Bought instead the 15R with 6GB mem and 1T hard drive for $499.99. This one also has the same body structure. Notice the plastic around the keyboard squeaks and has hollow feeling. This is unacceptable for this price. I returned mine and also at the store noticed that the ones at display do have the same problem. I then search online and found this:

Build quality is generally pretty strong for a mostly plastic notebook, but you'll notice some minor flexing in the plastics if you firmly squeeze the notebook in your hands or press hard on the keyboard while typing. The main chassis, while reasonably strong, has a "hollow" feeling which makes you think there is some unused space inside this black box.Please note that the body construction is the same in 15N

I purchased this Laptop (HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition Laptop) on 8/31/2011, This Laptop was not in original packaging box [should be packed in manufacture ( HP) box], so there is no manufacture information on the box about the Laptop.

Once the any item out of Manufacturer packaging and put into another box, that item should not be treated as new item and it should come under used item category.

I try to return this product and I am getting these time wasting emails from seller (L J Distributor) and no help at all from Amazon.com.

I purchase lots of product from Amozon.com for home and at my work place. I am really annoyed because Amazon .com does not want to take any responsibly here, I have decided not to purchase any item from Amozon.com because of this dodgy deal.

This is an excellent product. It is very stable. I have used many laptops over last several years, including toshiba, Acer, Asus. This computer is not only stable, but also fast, and without many junks built in like Toshiba. I bought a Toshiba Satellite, also with i7 process 11 months ago, it is extremely unstable and full of junk built in from Toshiba.

I chose this as a very solid system (processor, memory, hard drive) for its price, not as the lightest or coolest. It fits that very well and works well as a general utility system (ie, NOT a gaming system). With all that said, it is fairly light with the downside that it FEELS light.... not sure if this would work well carrying it every day, not sure how it'd hold up. I would also like to point out that "Blue Brushed Aluminum" refers to the color and pattern. The shell is, as expected, plastic painted as "Blue Brushed Aluminum" with the "Blue Brushed Aluminum" scratching off pretty easily. Great for sitting on a disk or use around the house, but certainly doesn't live up to me expectation of durability that the Satellite line used to have.

I have been using this laptop for over a month now, and so far I really like it. It's very fast, has a nice look, and the screen is the perfect size. I only wish the battery life was longer, had back-lit keys, and didn't heat up so quickly. A laptop fan is a must!

Did not actually receive an S5166. I received an S5373, which by all research is a year older model. It performs well but it seems I should have at least gotten a reply from the retailer when I sent him notification of this minor detail. Well, I suppose I'll be the first to review this product. I bought this about 3 weeks ago, without any customer reviews which I generally don't do but with a price drop to $570 I took the plunge after a bit of research. I need a laptop as I am going back school and wanted something newer and with better battery life than my 3.5 year old Dell Inspiron 14. ( A Dell 9 cell replacement battery is nearly $150, and needs a new power brick and cable, another 79 to 89.)

PROCESSING POWER

For those who are unfamiliar the L series it is Toshiba's mid-range Satellite line and a good compromise between power, cost, battery life etc. While the L series doesn't have aluminum casing of the S or P series it has many of the same components, just lacks the options (like a dedicated GPU, or i7). I purchased the i3 1.9ghz, 3rd gen. Mostly because I already have a 1st gen i3 2.3 ghz in my Dell and found the power and speed adequate, while giving minimal power consumption. While multitasking mult programs you get some bottlenecking, but it's tolerable. If you plan on doing media intensive applications like games, video editing etc. This is not the laptop for you, the i3 1.9ghz with Mobile Intel HD is not well suited for any type of heavy graphic processing. But if that is what you are looking for you probably know that already. It will handle HD streaming, DVD's, HD vid playback fine but don't expect too much. As far RAM goes, the 240 pin DIMM DRR3 is pretty much industry standard, and is generally the best ram chip set for now, (DRR 4 is due next year) and 6GB is generally adequate but more never hurts, so feel free order another module to add.

DISPLAY

The HD "TruBrite" is good, just good not great. It's not a full HD, it's 720p (as denoted by the last resolution value of 768). But, since nearly all streaming HD content is 720 (even it claims to be 1080p, it's generally isn't true 1080p) it's not a big deal. Also, since this machine generally is not suited to heavy video editing so 1080 capable is not even a reasonable expectation. If you are looking for 1080 capable then again this really isn't for you. What makes this display, ok, but not great is the viewing angle and colors. The viewing angle on the monitor in relation to pitch is very narrow. If you don't have it in the "sweet spot" the blacks look almost gray and color looks a little washed. This is a characteristic of all LCD/LED monitors but on this particular one the range is very narrow. Playing with the color and gamma settings helped considerably, so it is workable with a bit of tweaking. The touchscreen works excellently, registering every pinch and touch without a hitch and seems to have no latency. What is a little different is that the screen feels "soft", it has a lot of give and has a noticeable plastic feel about it. If you like the solid glass feel of a touchscreen this may disappoint you. I believe this is due to there being a plastic layer between the screen and your finger, but there isn't a large noticeable gap.

BUILD

This is where the laptop fails the most. While everything thus far is functionally solid the fit finish is lacking. The exterior casing is slightly spongy feeling and doesn't feel super solid. The edges where the sections of casing meets is definitely lacking polish. The edges don't line up perfectly and leave a fairly sharp plastic edge the protrudes beyond the other section, so there is a sharp plastic edge running around the laptop. Seems like the could have been solved by smoothing and polishing the edge before assembly. The casing shell in general feels a little flimsy and in comparison to other laptops I own in similar price points this is definitely the worst. The sound on the other hand is quite good, maybe even great. The speakers reside above the keypad projecting excellently and the DTS sound is really quite good for a laptop.

KEYS/TOUCHPAD

The keyboard is a little tough to get used to for me. It is a chiclet style with the keys spaced apart fairly wide and are very flat with little play, so the tactile response and feel is a little strange if you are used to a Lenovo or Dell style key (these are built like a traditional desktop keyboard.) Once I got used to it though I do like the solid feel of them, and the keystrokes are soft and quiet. Also, as a plus there is a LED light for the "caps lock" to indicate it is on. The track pad is again, ok not great. The pad is a click style and works well enough but feels cheap and too springy. The pad will have a little give without clicking and makes if feel cheap, my preference has been a shallower click and less play. (Also, a side note, turn off the tap to click immediately, way too sensitive!) The pad does work without a hitch just the touch and feel of it could be better.

OVERALL

I am going to rate this a 4 out of 5 stars. To me 4 stars is that the item performs exactly as you expected and as you need. 5 stars would be for something performs above and beyond and 3 stars for something that works well, but not quite as you hoped. The Toshiba Satellite L45t does exactly what I want it too and is up to my expectations. The fit and finish could be better, but $570 for a touchscreen laptop with good sound quality, a larger sized HDD, decent RAM and serviceable HD screen this is really a good value at this price point. If the price was closer to 650, I would say find something with the Intel HD 4000 and an i5 (maybe ASUS s500). Overall I would give this L45t a positive recommendation, as long as you understand what you computing needs are and buy accordingly.

Note: There are few things that buyers should be aware, this model (all L models and S, and U) do not have a user replaceable battery. Unfortunately, this is becoming standard procedure for laptops of the mid and higher price points. Toshiba offers battery replacement for 4 cell batteries for about $120 (as of right now. While this may seem a lot, its not too bad. To purchase a 4 cell LithIon polymer battery pack of high quality costs about $70, so if you are tech savvy you could in theory buy the batteries (they are bound batteries in the internal casing) and do it yourself, but I haven't (obviously) done this yet and couldn't tell you how difficult it would be. Also, Toshiba is ranked very well in reliability testing according to SquareTrade's statistics, and this factored into my purchase decision. While you can purchase a more powerful laptop made by HP or Acer etc for the same price point, the reliability rating is significantly worse.

UPDATE: I have finally had the chance to test the battery. Using MS Office only, with airplane mode turned on and with ECO settings (dimmer screen, faster sleep time) I used about 45 percent of the battery after 3 1/2 hours, and the projection was that I had 4 hours of battery time left. With this limited sample size it would seem this is very good for a 4-cell battery and exactly what I was hoping for, maybe even a little better. I tested it for about an hour with normal power settings on a full charge and it used about 18 percent of the battery after an hour, getting me a hair over five hours of battery time; which is very good.

I will break down this review into the various categories rather than just ramble on endlessly in one big review.

CPU RAM Performance: Prior to this laptop I was using a Intel i5 2.4gHz laptop with 8GB of RAM and this Toshiba easily equals the performance of the "better" CPU and higher RAM availability. Multitasking is not a problem so far for this laptop. I've run Photoshop, Painter SAI and Corel graphics programs simultaneously with no issues, this while streaming Netflix in the background (I need my background noise when doing graphical work) The laptop boots in under ten seconds and comes back instantly from sleep, unlike the previous laptop. A lot of that I believe has to do with Windows 8 which I wll touch on later. I have not encountered any bottlenecks so far performance wise on this unit, and I generally put a good deal of strain on my laptops. I can't answer any questions about gaming on this system, but I wouldn't suspect anyone to be looking in the sub $500 range for a gaming laptop.

Screen Touchscreen: The screen has excellent color reproduction right out of the box, if you like or need more vivid colors, that is easily adjusted in the settings. You can make it Disney vivid if you really wanted to. The viewing angles are on par with just about every other laptop out there under $900. Compared to the others we have in the household (HP, Lenovo, Sony and Dell), the viewing angles are exactly the same. The working angle (sitting in front of the screen) is just fine, color and clarity don't change much at all unless you start getting into steep viewing angles. The left-right side viewing angles are limited, which in my opinion is a good thing because I don't need the person next to me reading my emails or viewing whats on the screen while I am working. Limited left-right side viewing angles in my opinion are a nice security bonus. The touch screen is very accurate and very responsive, not to mention a serious blessing when using Windows 8. Toshiba did a nice job with the touch screen on this laptop. Another nice touch is rather than tiny rubber feet here and there around the screen to keep it from bumping into your keyboard when you close the lid, which fall out over time, this one has a solid rubber border all the way around the screen to protect it. In certain light and viewing angles you may be able to see the touch screen grid work on the screen itself, but even when it is visible, it does not distract or take away from the quality of the image on the screen. I've only managed to see it when in sunlight and I have the screen tilted way back.

Keyboard Touchpad: By now most people have gotten used to the chicklet style of keyboards, but if you have not, it wont take long to get used to it and start enjoying the ease of use it affords. The keys while soft, are solid and the extra space between the keys is nice (especially for big hands) and allows for easy and fast typing. The touchpad is smooth and responsive, it ranks in the top five of the best I've used. It's not super fantastic, but its better than most.

Audio: The speakers are located above the keyboard on this unit and produce some of the best sound I have ever heard out of a laptop that wasn't a dedicated multimedia/gaming laptop. I test the speakers using a mix of classical, pop, rock and even heavy bass rap music to get a feel for the performance and I was seriously impressed by the sound reproduction on this unit. Obviously not going to have a lot of bass, but it's suffice enough that music isn't flat.

Build Quality: Another reviewer complained about the build quality and I don't know if he got a unit built while someone was having a bad day or what, but the unit I got is assembled exceptionally. All the seams are very tight and aligned perfectly. The unit is obviously plastic, but its durability seems fine. I did a few basic twist tests to see how much flex it had, and honestly it is fairly rigid. There was slight flexing to the base when you try and twist it,but it was honestly less than the Aluminum ASUS this unit is replacing. The screen has the same flex as any other plastic topped laptop does, but less spongy. The top on my Asus and the top on the Lenovo has serious spongy flex, this top is more tight...as in it only gives so much and then stops. Overall it is a well put together unit and is (for me) the perfect weight. It's not so light that you fling it around and it's not so heavy that you'd rather leave it in the car. Another nice perk is the silver top and silver palm rests on this laptop. You barely notice finger prints or smudges, unlike the sparkly all black laptops.

Heat: So far the unit has not gotten very hot at all. Under a heavy load you will notice some heat on the palm rest areas and a small spot on the bottom, but nothing that would burn you or even be uncomfortable. The fan is quiet, but not silent. You will hear it come on, but after that it quiets down to where most wont hear it.

Windows 8: Ok, this part is probably going to get a lot of people hating me, because honestly I bought this expecting to hate W8 with every ounce of my being based on everything the media and all my friends and coworkers have said about it. I was ready to hate it with a passion and even willing to buy a Windows 7 DVD to change the OS. Ten minutes into using Windows 8 and I can't for the life of me see what's wrong with it. It's very easy to customize. It's also a very fast, sleek and fluid OS. Yes, it is very different than the Windows most are used to...but its no different than when Microsoft went from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. If you take a few minutes to get familiar with where things are moved to and how it works, how to set up and customize your desktop as well as the start screen, you will find that it is a lot easier and faster to use. After one day with the OS I was showing everyone else all the shortcuts and settings and how to use it, now most everyone likes it. You just have to take a short time to learn it is all. Also the touch screen makes a WORLD of difference in using Windows 8 over just using it with a mouse. It can be done both ways, but mouse only requires a little more patience.

Quirks Annoyances: The power plug....every single laptop I have owned in the last decade the power cord where it plugs into the laptop is always at a 90 degree angle so it doesn't stick out. Toshiba decided to just make this plug perfectly straight so that it stick out a good 2" from the side of the laptop....which is just asking for it to get bumped and to break....more than likely, inside the laptop. The CD/DVD drive is on the left side of the laptop, which just makes arranging your work space where ever you go a little more time consuming as most laptops have the CD/DVD on the right side.

BOTTOM LINE: This is an excellent budget touch screen laptop that seems (so far) to be performing very well and is built to last. I still have my Toshiba Satellite 650mHz Pentium II laptop and it still works just fine...not that it can do much more than play solitaire anymore, but it still works perfectly. Toshiba makes a good product, and I went away from them for a few years in favor of ASUS, however recent experiences with ASUS and their rapid decline in quality is what lead me to come back to Toshiba and give them another try. So far, I don't regret the decision at all.

Let me begin by saying that I have only owned Toshiba laptops and I have gone through three of them and they lasted a long time, were durable, etc.. So, I got this laptop expecting the same level of quality. I was looking for a good priced touchscreen and thought I had found it I loved the price, the size, the look (sleek), and everything worked well except the wireless. It kept dropping me off my wireless network at home and at work/school randomly. To the point where I couldnt take it anymore. I had a hard time installing my wireless printer as well (and thought that this may have been the cause of the problem i read online that some wireless HP printers are just no compatible with some laptops). The other issue I had was that it would randomly highlight everything on the page (and this was not b/c of the lock feature on the keypad either). So it had to go. Nevertheless, Amazon was great about the return, I received a replacement within two days and returned the faulty one. Since I thought it was just a bad one of the bunch i replaced it with the same computer. It had the same issues only on this one, the wireless dropped and the mousepad highlight 'everything' on the page more frequently. The mousepad also looked like it just wasnt built well. It was built slanted and so it was noticeably perpetually 'depressed'. So I returned it and went to buy something at a nearby store (and I typically get everything from Amazon so going to the store was also a sacrifice) another Toshiba and I spent more money on it over $200 morethe semester was moving along and I couldnt afford to be without a laptop for long and needed to download programs. I got another laptop so far so good, it is larger, but other then that the wireless signal seems to be weaker in some spots then other smaller laptops in the same vicinity and on the same wireless network (lenova, Asus, Imac)...I gave it two point because I liked everything else about this laptop I just wished it worked like it should have.

I was getting tired of having a desktop and a notebook and wanted something powerful and light. Even though many options are available nowadays, none come close to Z2 in performing all jobs well.

At the office I have the dock, USB hub, and 3 monitors (2 connected to the dock and for the 3rd one I need to connect a HDMI cable). All I need to do is to connect 2 cables and I am set.

Pros:

Fast: The machine is fast to boot and to resume (my previous Dell Lattitude was a nightmare), handles all my programs as fast as my quadcore desktop (including video and photoshop). Disclaimer: I do not play games. The noise cancelling headphones are great (light and it works).

Light: My arthrits thank me daily.

Battery: I got the slice battery, but I have not needed yet. I am getting at least 5-6 hours from the main battery.

Backlight: is much less intrusive than Dell.

Display: reflections are very well controlled.

Attention: it calls much less attention than other thin & lights (it does not "look" as thin or light)

Cons:

Noise: I was afraid of the reviews stating that the fan makes the sound of an airplane taking off. It is true, but in my use it never happened with my usual work, including watching/streaming movies. It did happen once while I was making/burning a movie using an USB 3.0 BluRay burner (not the dock). The dock fan/drive is somewhat noticeable.

Speakers: Useless. My Ipad have better speakers. I carry a mini usb soundbar.

Graphics: I have not been able to convince the laptop to recognize my touchscreens as separate units yet (if I touch the 2nd or the 3rd monitor, it thinks I touched the first monitor). I think is fixable, I just haven't had the time (took me while to convince the Dell also)

Price: I am sure Sony is making a hefty profit at my expense. ASUS UX31 is a proof it did not have to be that expensive. I only bought this as it was the most painless 3 monitor option at work.

Overall I am much happier than expected. I hope this helps.

Update: A year later...

I stand for almost everything above except for the following problems:

1) Drivers: for some reason, time to time one of the drivers stop working and I have reinstall the driver. Usually the problem is the driver for the SD card reader, touchpad or USB ports.

2) Keyboard Backlight is too weak and too slow to turn on

3) The USB 3.0 port stop working and I can't get it to work again. It still works to connect to the dock and I can still get USB 3.0 from the docking station but when I am on the road I am down to 1 USB 2.0 port and no usb 3.0.

4) When disconnecting the docking station, it is important to OK the message on the center of the screen first then the on the left top otherwise it will crash on next boot and it takes several reboots to start working again.

5) the built-in speakers are horrible. As my portable clip-on speakers use USB, I run out of ports on the road.

6) the volume out to the headphones are also weak depending on your source (like Amazon prime) and headphones. I use a small (chocolate mint size) amplifier but then the noise cancelation is gone.

Would I buy again? Yes, as I like to have 3 monitors to work, Vaio Z2 is still the best solution to use just 1 machine as desktop and laptop. But I am downgrading it to 4 stars.

The Sony Vaio Z2 is easily the best laptop I have ever owned and purchased. I have owned various laptops in the past 12 years (Dell, Asus, Alienware, Samsung, Apple, toshiba, NEC, Sony TX), and the Vaio Z2 blows everything away. Having a good grasp of current hardware and an enthusiast in building custom computers (Liquid cooling to subzero cooling included), I was looking for a laptop that would fit what I was looking for. Giving up last year, I ended up buying and trying the asus bamboo which I felt was at best a mediocre machine.

However, when I first saw the Vaio Z2 in ads in Hong Kong, the design immediately caught my attention. I quickly researched the specs when I got back to my hotel room and found it to be the exact laptop I was looking for Light and slim, powerful, adaptable, strong battery (14hours with the sheet battery), tough design, USB3. I quickly purchased one in Singapore and have not looked back since. I simply loved the laptop.

There are however cons as well. The Keyboard keys are very responsive but feels low (this is unavoidable from a design perspective). The trackpad and mouse was at first originally horrible, however with the latest vaio update, it is now responsive and easier to use. The exorbitant price is painful. I believe for the price we should have received the sheet battery, bluray burner, more SSD space, and windows ultimate instead of premium.

The powerdock is a good and bad thing for me. On one hand having to carry another brick is annoying when I travel. On the other hand, if you think of it as an ultra portable laptop with a high end mobile GPU, it sits far better than any other laptop out there. Also the powerdock allows for great future possibilities. Being able to upgrade the powerdock in the future is very viable. However it is unknown yet as to whether sony will use this feature or not.

With all that said. I still believe that the Sony Vaio Z2 has brought the laptop technology up another notch and will be the high end laptop manufacturers will have to contend with in my books. The only reason I took 1 star off this laptop is due to the uncertainty of whether sony will continue to support the powerdock in the future. If they do so by coming up with better powerdock and GPUs for the Z2, I will correct this review and give it a full 5 star.

I hope this review has helped. In conclusion, grabbing a Sony Vaio Z2 is a great choice if you have the cash to spare.

I'll keep this short.

Pros:

VERY light chassis that almost feels "hollow"

Overall:

Great for business, rips through most any software you'll ever need portable, decodes tak files at an impossibly fast speed, but if you want this for gaming I would advise a separate mouse and keyboard.

The laptop is beautiful, it's a Z and it shows, you wouldn't have to be a genius to notice it's quality, it really is a sight. Let me also say the resolution & clarity of the screen at an astounding 1920x1080 on a 13.1 inch screen is amazing all by itself. Some people say they can't read the small print. Well, you can always adjust the zoom. However, if you get the lower resolution you can't adjust up, so if you want the capability of watching a full 1080p video on your blu-ray than this can do it. The peformance of the processor is quite good for a dual core processor, you won't find a competitor that utilizes a quad core in a notebook that weighs only 2.5 pounds and is only a 1/2 thick. It's just to much chip to allow for cooling, so the dual core i7 is mainstream, but if you look close, this one has a much faster i7 than many. That's because this is not an ultra low voltage processor. Somehow they found a way to cool this upgrade even in it's ultra thin chasis. Now, you may have heard that many reviews complain of the fan running loud and sometimes to constant, well, I personally don't see what the big fuss is about a small fan running inside of your laptop, first of all I didn't find it annoying or overly loud. Second, I'd rather have it this way than the alternative, what I don't like is a machine that seems as though the fan isn't working or maybe set on the wrong calibration. The look and feel of this laptop is second to none, it's awesome in every aspect.

Now, the flip side, the portability comes at a price. The speakers are almost non tolerable, easy fix, I recommend a $30 single capsule speaker, Amazon carries the x-mini which works just fine. The next sacrifice you'll make by choosing this machine is the shortage of USB ports, for some this is not a deal breaker. You must utilize the included power media dock to have 3 USB ports, otherwise you'll only have 2. Next, you'll need to plug in the power media dock via one of your USB ports and one other dedicated port to plug in the power media dock. Next you'll have to plug in the power media dock to the wall to power it on. Now you have as many wires as a full blown desktop. The power media dock houses both the blu-ray player and the upgraded Radeon 1 gig graphics card. This means that when the power media dock is not plugged in, your only using the standard Intel 3000 graphics which is onboard your laptop. If you need to load a program off of a dvd/cd, you have to plug in the power media dock. I don't think this is much of an issue since the macbook air is the same way. However the graphics I think may be a little bigger issue. When you open the box the new Z comes in, you'll find an a/c adapter for the laptop, then as you dig more, you'll find even a larger a/c adapter for the power media dock, it's quite large. Now, the biggest issue in my opinion, the keyboard. To say it's a minor adjustment would be an understatement. The keyboard has only a 1mm keystroke as opposed to the Sony Vaio S model which has a 2mm keystroke. The first thing is the backlit keyboard, don't expect the keys to light up as much on the Z as it does on the S model, the reason? Well, the keys are so short of space underneath on the Z that there was simply no room to allow light under the key, the S model on the other hand does. So, this means you'll only be getting light from the letter character itself, not the lower edge of each key. For some, not a big deal, for me, I want the extra light. The oil from your fingers will eventually wear the keys and soil them, before you know it the most commonly used keys are barely visible at night.

In summary, I would like to see a new Z model that is a little thicker, with longer keystrokes, built in high performance switchable graphics and blu ray slot loading as well. Keep the material and workmanship the same, same 1920x1080 display, drastically improve the speakers and provide full backlit keyboard including the bottom edge just like the S model and throw in 2 year warranty instead of one for the Z model, and last but certainly not least, Sony needs to realize the value of promoting a warranty that is openly & honestly as well as easily transferable to multiple owners for the duration of the warranty. Dell does this and it makes a big difference. If I decide to sell, which I have a habit of doing, I want the easy warranty transfer which protects my investment when I sell. It's a win win for all. Now, back to the good again, this laptop looks great on your desk, it's a conversation piece for sure, you'll be the envy of the office. The laptop is truly a piece of art, nice. It's so thin and well made. Just needs a few tweaks. If Sony improved their customer support and listened to their customers, this may have already been changed, remember, there are often more important things in life besides making your scheduled tee time.

This machine is great. It is everything I want. Great resolution, it is 1920x1080 (VPC-Z216). So the res. is better than Amazon says.

Boots up at 15 seconds. Good keyboard layout. Feels like a premium computer.

The machine is amazingly thin and light weighted. Also you got extreme power from the processor and SSDs. Go for it, I truly recommend it.
