I am definitely satisfied with the purchase, good price, excellent computer.

it just has one issue when connecting to wifi, it seams to have low "antenna" capacity, though it works fine when the wifi signal is good.

I got the laptop factory refurbished. It didn't have even the smallest scratch.

The only problem is the know wifi issue. With some (not all) wifi routers, the wifi speed decreases dramatically (down to 6Mbps).

Apart from that, super fast, didn't encounter any work or multimedia task that it couldn't handle.

I am an experienced graphic designer (Photoshop / Dreamweaver / In Design) and full-time internet retailer shipping about 100 $200+ orders daily, so I guess you could say I am a power-consumer from both sides of the curtain. I am on my machine(s) at least 8-12 work related hours / day updating my web site(s), communicating with customers and vendors and researching a wide variety of products and issues related to my business. Additionally, I get about all my news online and spend more time than average in social networking media promoting my business.

I own several (currently HP) desktop machines, as a small business owner with a handful of employees I am also my own IT guy, chief cook and bottle-washer, and have been so since 1996. I compare / purchase several computers annually as I personally like everyone to have the latest and greatest, not only is it fun but I can rationalize it as giving my company the edge over my competitors, and can also depreciate it on my taxes so it costs me a lot less to upgrade than the home user. Besides, communication is the key to a successful dot-com, we answer our inquiries and other customer service communications darn near real-time. I'm on my third or fourth Android device having migrated from Blackberry a few years back. I mention all this so you know where I'm coming from ...

This whole thing started when I got frustrated with my Kindle Fire's virtual keyboard, surfing and replying to emails. I have been doing a lot of that on my Samsung Stratosphere but being an old fart my vision isn't what it used to be and wanted a bigger screen. I mean, you can't communicate if you don't have a device with you, opening a 17" laptop in a vehicle or on the tarmac is doable but cumbersome because of its size; the phone is great for a quick note in the grocery store or waiting room but locating a URL, cutting and pasting it into your response can be challenging on any smart phone and is far from ideal this, I reasoned, is where the tablet will rule. This goes also for the sofa, bed, and yes, the commode. I am dead serious when I told you I'm always online and confess I even have a small computer table in the john. (Great place to read the news.) But one of the road blocks to handiness is the infamous power cord, I have always required several so I can avoid hauling it, and the computer, hither and yon. Sucks to be me.

So I've been patiently waiting for the Android 4.0 OS (Ice Cream) before handing the Fire over to the wife (I have a standard Kindle for e-books) when I saw that HP battery-in-the-airport ad ... bingo! The light bulb went on and I was on a mission.

I shopped hard before deciding on the Folio 13, studied, watched the videos, compared tech specs and did some power tab-clicking with all the customer reviews of the ultrabooks and 14" notebooks, factory web sites and other professional review sites like CNet, PC World, liliputing and/or whatever else is to be found in a Google search. I looked at the Samsung Series 9, the Acer Aspire S3 and the Asus Zenbook on-the-hoof at Best Buy before purchasing the HP on Amazon (these were the only ones on the shelf in my area). I buy a lot of stuff on Amazon and really enjoy shopping here.

What I was to learn is that you basically have many pretty good choices, but must make your decision based on anticipated usage and what size you are willing to put up with. Then there's the puny little solid state drives, long on performance (I upgraded my laptop to an expensive hybrid drive last year) but short on capacity. i looked on my 500 Gig VAIO and discovered I was only using about 250 (I keep most lesser-used photo and video files on a big external Seagate drive), and that's with a good deal of incidental duplication from the last upgrade. Still, the 70 gigs or so you have left on the ultrabook after loading the OS would fall quite a bit short eventually I reasoned, as I'd like to be able do an ad or site update should the need arise and would therefore require current photography and more recent ad files, in addition to the core Adobe CS4 software I swear by, loaded on the machine. Plus I am a part-time rocket scientist (hobby-level) so needed some of that stuff on it also.

I have been threatening to make the move back to Mac since abandoning that platform for price in 2004, so I did consider the Airbook. One chat session with Adobe however nuked that idea I'd have to abandon my PC software if I were to get new OSX licenses, or spend another $1400 on CS5 for the Mac. That's right, Adobe wanted $1400 in fees if I wanted to run their design suite on a $999 Airbook. Adobe sucks.

This should give one some clarity obviously I couldn't do all that with a Galaxy Tablet even though Adobe does now have Photoshop and such for tablets now so it is a possibility, but I'd have to fork out more cash for that as well. Rocksim however is Windows only (rocket design software). Be sure to consider these little whoppers or suffer the consequences!

So if you're deciding between a tablet or an ultrabook, whether or not you want your core productivity software on the little machine comes first. With these babies you can run most Windows software, unlike tablets, so they are far more flexible and for this reason may eventually emerge to dominate the tablet-portable category.

Now there's the issue of storage capacity. Few ultras have 256 gb of storage (see the Dell XPS), those that do are 25-40% more ($1299 Dell), although that is likely to change as the category evolves. If you go over 256 you are in hard drive (HDD) versus solid state drive (SSD) territory so performance would suffer somewhat, that's kind of heretical anyway. What to do?

Then I discovered the new Lexar 128 GB SDXC Flash Memory Card LSD128CRBNA133. Viola! For $175, considerably less than the $300 Dell wants on the upgraded drive XPS 13 ... problem solved as long as the ultra I chose has an SD slot! (Optionally, the 64gb card is $100)

Decisions, decisions .... The XPS 13 and Samsung Series 9 sure are sexy, I would have loved having one of those on my flight's drop-tray, why didn't I go with one of them? Almost did, oh man they look good! Then it dawned on me my #1 requirement, the starting point of this whole endeavor, was not style, it was battery life. Ah, battery life, everything I can find on the black-boxed beauties indicated they were far from ideal in this regard. Then there was the issue of the SD card, no slot at all on the Dell, Micro SD on the Samsung so capacity would suffer immensely. Practicality has to preside as much as I wish it not be so.

By the way, the read-speed of the Lexar is FASTER than the onboard SSD drive, though the write is much slower, so you're not giving up much and have the additional benefit of reading your camera cards.

Now my requirements were taking shape, and there is a HUGE variety of I/O port availability on these various and sundry ultrabooks, but currently the market requires you to choose between a selection of I/O schemes and design. I went for the 'book with the most options and that meant the Folio 13:

USB 3.0 Port (much faster for devices that support it)

USB 2.0 Port (most USB devices)

Bluetooth 3.0 (excellent way to connect headphones, mouse and other peripherals)

Ethernet RJ 45 Jack (I shy from those public hotel networks)

SD Card Slot greatly expanded storage options

Full HDMI jack (Dell has a mini)(I use these often for larger monitors and TV viewing)

Backlit keyboard (careful with this one, many ultrabooks don't)

Headphone / speaker / mic jack (this should be handy for VOIP apps like Skype and Google Phone)

Battery Life (Folio allegedly has an hour lead over the Dell)

Sure, there's sexier 'books out there but sensibility won out. If you, however, don't need all that and are simply looking for a stylin' communication and Microsoft Office system, I'd take a hard look at the Dell. Now there's a CNet review comparing them. They agree advantage HP (but no one could blame you for getting the Dell.)

Here's my impressions on Day Three of Folio 13 ownership ....

As usual my Amazon shopping experience was flawless. I don't sell on Amazon or Ebay anymore because they take too large of a percentage off the top, but I have in the past so understand the entire fulfillment process well. Amazon is the best especially when you purchase from Amazon as opposed to a third-party vendor so I generally pay attention to who is doing the selling for best results. This was another flawless Amazon Prime transaction, I highly recommend it.

The Good:

It took me about 2 minutes to set up the machine when it was unboxed. No challenges whatsoever. Basically name it, enter your wireless router info in the step-by-step wizard and you're live. Loading the Adobe suite and copying files from the main machine was a breeze with the hi-cap SD card. I put the software on the built-in solid state drive and the graphic files and other documents on the Lexar SD card. Let's see how long it stays that way ....

I would describe the HP Folio 13 as a professional's ultra-portable machine. The outside top cover and the case surrounding the keyboard is brushed aluminum; strong, clean and neat but otherwise unremarkable. The "soft-touch" surrounding the screen and on the bottom gives the entire package a very inviting, user-friendly feel one will likely notice immediately and surely will outlast the machine unless I do something stupid.

It boots at a blazing-fast speed, you will be amazed. Restarts will no longer be coffee breaks however, so take your java to your desk on the way in. Recovering from a closed lid or other sleep related states can me measured in single-digit seconds, I just timed it at 3 or 4. Very cool.

The entire strip above the keyboard, between the display hinges, is speaker. It's a LOT better than I expected from one of these little units, but since I haven't heard the others I have nothing to compare to. I wouldn't use it for a boom-box but its more than adequate for YouTube videos and the like. Certainly it's comparable to most other notebooks and there's a headphone / speaker jack if you need it. Connecting to my Logitech Surround Sound Speaker System Z906 (980-000467) definitely rocks the entire building all out of proportion to size.

One other big plus, and one I compared to the Best Buy demos, is the keyboard. Love it, have absolutely none of the complaints everyone is discussing on other machines. The keys are sure-footed and lively. you don't have to hammer them yet they tell your fingers they've done the job when struck with a gentle touch. Even heavy phat-fingers like mine naturally relax when using it, they are of a size and in good position as far as I am concerned. The function keys are primo, you do not have to press and hold the 'fn' key simultaneously with the top key to instantly backlight the keyboard, turn off the wireless, fast forward video or adjust the volume & brightness, a nice feature in my book compared even to full-size laptops. In the lower right corner you have the four scroll keys, they work well and are intuitive in position and function. No, you don't nave a number pad or a 10-key lock but it is not to be expected in a box this small.

Another nice feature is a handy switch in the upper left corner of the trackpad to turn the pad off and on. When you read my trackpad review below you can see why it's there ...

The bottom remains very cool and there's no annoying fan noise that some are complaining about on competitive models. Also some people wonder if they can deal with life sans CD-ROM. I wondered also, mostly because of software discs I have laying about, plus I do watch the occasional movie while flying or RVing so I added the AmazonBasics USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (Black) for $40 just in case.

The Bad:

Um, trackpad buttons are far too stiff. One almost has to pinch the box to get them to respond. Too bad and may be a deal breaker for some. I tend to spell badly and use the right-click spell-checking functionality a lot, so this is going to have be worked out for me at least. I'll be doing a lot of pad touching and two-finger scrolling in the mean time. I have never been big on trackpads however, much preferring a mouse, and one of the pluses is the aforementioned button to disable it in favor of another device. Maybe they'll loosen up with use, we'll see, but there's really no excuse to botch-up an otherwise very functional and useful overall input design. Shame on you H-P.

The only other small thing I noticed is the display itself it is a bit flat, washed out if you will. In fact I noticed this on all the ultrabooks I could try, even the Samsung, a brand well known for their superior LED's. One would be best served to put them all side-by-side and hit the graphics controls to see what's what if that's a key consideration, anyway. Bear in mind that none of them are designed as primary Photoshop machines.

In all fairness it's such a minor point, even to a graphics guy like me, that I haven't taken the time to mess around with the color, brightness, gamma and contrast settings so that may help. Generally I hook-up to an external display when doing anything important anyway and the 13.3" LED screen onboard is plenty good for general browsing and email.

UPDATE: This situation was easily corrected in the Intel Graphics Control Panel (right click on desktop background > graphics properties > advanced options > display > color enhancement > saturation slider). Outstanding.

The Ugly:

I'd have preferred they didn't affix the promotional stickers to either side of the track pad, they could simply put them in the box for attachment should that particular unit become a showroom demo. I don't need the pitch I already bought it after all and they mess with my aesthetics.

Overall:

I really like this unit, what it lacks in style it more than makes up for with functionality. Hard to think of a peripheral that wouldn't connect well, and there's enough variety to connect your choice of headphones, mouse, external monitors, networking options, printer and so on, simultaneously.

I booted it at 6am this morning after charging all night, it's now 11:21AM and I still have 2 hr 49 min left. * hours, exactly the reason I got it.

Expandability of the HP Folio 13 is the best of all the true SSD ultrabook entries at this point (Acer has the quasi-ultras with CD's, bigger HDDs and such), mainly due to the porting and SD card slot as mentioned and all of this comes at the lower end of the pricing spectrum. I got mine for $858 with a $100 gift card for a net of $758! Adding the $175 for the 128 GB card puts it right at $900, 40% less than the Dell (or or indeed any others I found with 256 gig drive) even considering the big SD card.

More connectivity, class-leading expandability, top battery life, all for for less money out-of-pocket: now THAT is a winning hand in my book! Stiff trackpad be damned. I'm getting more and more used to it with use, perhaps it is getting broken in. Anyway, I have a Bluetooth mouse hanging around here somewhere ....

Pros: It's very light compared to the normal 6+ lb laptops I usually use, traveling with it is a pleasure! Performance is decent considering its size and it has so many ports compared to other ultrabooks. It has an Ethernet port! That's a big deal for me as hotel wi-fi networks are usually really bad. Almost no other ultrabook has that, same with a regular sized HDMI port. Sure you could get a different computer and carry ethernet/hdmi adapters with you but carrying around adapters defeats the purpose of having an ultrabook!

Cons: The screen's color contrast is a bit washed out and can not be adjusted. However this is only a minor annoyance to me and the screen is plenty bright.

Overall: I bought this and the Toshiba Portege Z835 at the same time and used both side by side for a few days. The HP won hands down. There are other ultrabooks but they all are missing something; ethernet, hdmi, backlit keyboard... As of early 2012 this is the best ultrabook on the market.

Best Deals for HP Folio 13-1020US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Steel Gray)

I have had this laptop for about one month and so far so good. I use it for college and it is great for portability and its battery lasts all day. I have gotten 8.0 hours on the battery with brightness fairly low using wifi (Netflix and browsing). I like the USB 3.0 with an external HDD because it is really fast transfer. The only thing with it is that the SSD is only 128gb but with the recovery partition plus operating system there is only about 70 gigs for the user. I got a 32 gig class 10 SD card to get some extra space. Some people have tons of music and videos on their computer so this laptop may not be for you but I have very little media on mine and doubt that it will be a problem. The SSD makes booting, loading, copying and installing programs really fast. The computer boots up to a usable state in about 18 seconds and all hardware is very good. Keyboard and trackpad are very good. Backlight on the keyboard is awesome however not as cool in the white color than my previous HP ENVY with a red backlit keyboard.

Honest reviews on HP Folio 13-1020US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Steel Gray)

I have looked and compared portege, u400, zenbook, aspire and after weighing in the price and specs, I went ahead and bought the Folio 13. I read a lot of reviews in cnet, engadget, etc and Folio always had excellent reviews. I also went to bestbuy to check out for myself. My second choice was zenbook but it was too pricey for me. Here is a list of pros and cons for these ultra notebooks:

portege build quality is poor. the screen bends like paper and wiggles. but you get ssd, i5, backlit key

u400 you get a dvd drive which is nice. but no sd card an backlit key and the keyboard is small. build quality is awesome though.

aspire plasticky and not fast, not ssd, but cheap for $800

zebook would have been perfect but too pricey. no ethernet port

I wanted to check out also the samsung 7, it talks about expresscache. but pricey as well.

With HP Folio, for $850, you get SSD, USB 3.0, backlit key, and an i5 core. Seriously, the SSD costs about $140 in itself and it makes your computing a lot faster. You get a lot of ports and keyboard is really nice. Battery is super.

The only cons on the Folio, is that my legs get warm and the right click button malfunctions sometimes, it responds as left button. Screen is average...

UPDATE AUGUST 4 2012:

I have actually starting taking this laptop on my trips rather than my MacBook Air. I still use my MacBook Air but sometimes there are things I need a windows machine, which is mostly due to some work reasons. The battery life is great, sure I have to plug it in but 99% of the time that I use the machine I unplug it, take it with me to move around the house, go to work or go to a meeting without bringing my power cord.

The SSD hard drive on this machine is nice. It boots fast, it surfs the web fast. I open the lid on the laptop, hit the power button, login, load up iTunes and download what I need over wireless and sync to my iPod, or check my email or a document and close the lid in must a matter of a couple minutes.

I have also found myself using the touchpad on this machine more than an external mouse. It allows for two finger scrolling, which I originally used on my MacAir and found that I can do the same thing on the Folio VERY HANDY.

At times I forget this laptop has light-up keys. I am sitting in the dark and can't see the keys and remember that I can hit "F5" to turn on the LED lit keys, again VERY HANDY.

This laptop is fast and light and so many of it's features are "Handy" which makes it more productive than any other laptop I have used for daily activities.

MARCH 7 2012:

I have a MacBook Air 13.3 with an i5 processor, it is very nice machine. I got this machine, the HP Folio 13, because I wanted a Windows laptop that was very portable AND usable. I am not going to do a 1 to 1 comparison between this and the MacBook Air 13 because I am sure someone else already has. Over the years I have used a few windows based "mini's" and while they are portable they are not quite usable. This machine is very very light AND at the same time very fast. The screen may be 13 inches but the resolution makes it look bigger. I like how bright this screen is. I like being to able to adjust things on the keyboard. I like being able to turn on the backlit keyboard so I can type in the dark, kind of like the MacBook air. The one thing that I really like about the MacBook Air is I can use two fingers to scroll on the touchpad and I can do the same on the Folio 13. I loaded up Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the Folio and wow, it was fast but I want back to Windows 7 because I didnt like Windows 8 at all and the new UI.

So in the end, the Folio is around $800 and the MacBook Air is around $1300 and each has their own qualities but I find myself using the Folio more than the MacBook air these days.

I am a techno idiot, so if you want a review that goes in detail about gigs, jigs and migs, then this isn't it. If you want to know if this computer can get you online while on the road, listen to music, watch movies and just plain rock your world, then I am your man. I pulled this thing out of the box about 2 weeks ago and fired it up. I bought a router so I could use it anywhere at home. I have had no issues with it and the fact is it is much faster then my HP desktop. All preinstalled software works perfectly and the picture quality while watching video is perfect. The first night I had it I watched my DVD of Cool Hand Luke on it and was just amazed at the quality. Bottom line? I love it!

I took a good look at this laptop when I was shopping around for a new computer for my mother-in-law, and while I ended up purchasing the HP DV6 there was a lot to like about the G60 line. The HP G60 (and G70) are aimed at the home user looking for a desktop size screen but otherwise want traditional notebook specs (good battery life, lighter weight, etc...). While not a true "desk-note" (it uses mobile cpus, most desk-notes use desktop class cpus) it will fill the "desk top" role for most users. The build quality is pretty good. Far above the basic "Compaq" line but not quite as nice as the DV line from HP.

What it is good at: Web browsing, light gaming (does well with anything other than 3D games), office apps (word, excel, power point, etc...) and basic media tasks (playing and creating MP3s, watching movies, editing short home movies).

What it is not good at: 3D gaming, editing large video files, or any heavy computational tasks.

Here is a quick break down of the specs:

Display: This 16" screen is a good bright display that works best indoors, but can be used outdoors except in direct sunlight. A good display is an HP trademark and this one lives up to that standard.

CPU: The Intel Pentium T4300 is a good dual core CPU for light home use. It is the newest version of the Pentium line and is based off the most advanced of the "Core2" processors. (Pentiums are just "Core" or "Core2" CPUS with less cache and slower clock speeds.) I'm a big fan of this CPU for people who mostly want to web browse it's got two cores so you can surf while the anti-virus does it's job so why pay more for a CPU you won't use? If you plan on doing any serious gaming this is not the CPU for you (though it's a lot better than older Pentiums based off the old "Core" cpus).

Memory: 3GB is plenty for light home use. Again plenty for web surfing and playing movies. Not enough for serious gaming.

Graphics: Comes with Intel's new 4500 integrated graphics. While this is a great improvement over previous Intel graphics parts it's still not going to run high-end 3D games at any decent resolution. Old games and non-3D games will be fine.

HDD: 320GB is far more than most light home users will use. I know few using more than 60GB. However anyone who plans on editing home movies will need more space than this (and more memory, and a faster cpu...).

Battery: 6 cell lithium ION. Pretty standard. Gives you about 2-3 hours of light use. If you order it custom from HP you can get an 8 cell. However if you are looking for good battery life you really don't want the G60 line. Look for something with a 14" display and at least an 8 cell battery.

Wireless: Most notebooks from high to low end are using the same few wireless chipsets. This one is covers a wide wireless spectrum including the newest "Wireless N".

Weight: 6.7lbs is a good weight for a screen this large. You will find them up to 8lbs. Again if you are looking for serious mobility you want a thin-and-light, but if you want something you can easily carry from room to room this should suit you.

Best Deals for HP G60-440US 16-Inch Laptop

I received this notebook a couple days ago, and I'm currently in the process of cleaning all the "bloatware" off of it (though pretty much any computer maker is going to install this on systems they sell, this is really my main problem with HP products). It should run Vista fine after that (though I may end up "downgrading" to XP -I plan on doing IT work with this notebook and need specific software tools that I know run on XP -the 10-key is definitely a plus for entering IP addresses quickly for IT work). This notebook gets a 3.5 performance rating in Vista (the weakest component is the integrated video, but that is to be expected). One thing you don't really see in the pictures on Amazon is that the top of the shell is very shiny black, and will easily show fingerprints, and will quite likely be susceptible to scratches, so make sure you get a good case if you want to maintain its appearance. At the current pricing, this thing is a steal (especially when you factor in the free upgrade to Windows 7, coming out this fall).

Update 10/17/09: I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate (I wanted the Bitlocker drive encryption feature, so I will not be using the free upgrade of Windows 7 Home Premium HP will be sending me) last night without a hitch -I did not need to download any drivers from HP and the notebook successfully connected to the Internet after only having to enter the wireless network key. The notebook is much snappier with Windows 7 than with Vista. Still, an excellent value, even though the OS I just loaded onto it cost almost half as much as the notebook originally did.

Honest reviews on HP G60-440US 16-Inch Laptop

Wow! Really light computer. Overall, great computer and fantastic deal on Amazon. Came with battery already half charged. Has cleaning cloth, notepad, and contact numbers if any problems right when you open the box. Initially thought screen was a little small, but I wanted a full size keyboard because I use 10-key sometimes, so it was perfect.

It took 4 minutes to boot, took another 4 to go through HP software. HP tries to get you to allow them to track your use of the computer, which, fortunately, you can skip. Did not recognize my network right away and had to go through setup with more lousy, HP(network) software that did not work. I searched My Computer and Network to figure out where the network was and it took 2 seconds doing it my own way took me 20 minutes to figure this all out. Comes with Ebay on Desktop, Norton Trial, and Office trial, and more dumb HP software (which I promptly closed out).

Keyboard is a little slick to touch, but recognizes fine touch, it has a separate section to slide your finger down to make the page scroll up or down. Screen is bright, but sound is just ok (Altec speaker) and a little schrill (get better sound from my Altec surround sound desktop speakers. Keyboard/windows response is fast and crisp. Computer was really quiet and the fan did not start right away like my old computer. Actually, the computer did not get very hot at all after using until battery died.

Recognized CD right away, but was slow opening images. Took 7 minutes to copy 556 MB to harddrive from disc. After using a few days, I found the battery lasts about 3 hours. The 10-key is really convenient if you crunch numbers. The one bad thing is the wi-fi doesn't recognize my network automatically, I have to manually set it up every time this may be due to my other wi-fi on my desktop or other interference or the router I have (which is a few years old). I would recommend anyone to get the new chipsets that have a wireless N router built into the wi-fi chipset. I also got a USB hub to add more devices (comes with 3 USB ports); also does not take a CF card, only SD, MMC, XD and SMpro.

I haven't bought a new computer in several years, so I really shopped around and this is a really good computer so far and at a great price.

I've had my HP G60-440US laptop for four months now. During those four months, the laptop's been out of order (non-functioning) three different times for an aggregate period of about five weeks. During the first month, the hard drive crashed, and I couldn't turn the computer on. Then the little chippie-thing that allows the computer to connect to my wireless modem broke down. Most recently, the dvd player died while, at the same time, the new wireless card went kaputt. Consequently, I've had to send my laptop away to the service department twice, and have had to reinstall some chip or other part so that the computer could pick up a wireless signal. The computer has been a complete lemon. My friends warned me about purchasing an HP product, and I didn't listen.

One of the worst parts about my HP experience has been the attitude of the customer service people. The technical guys in India were nice enough, but they kept me on the line for more than an hour before they agreed that I wasn't lying about my hard drive having crashed. My experience with the managers in the U.S. was much worse. My conversation with customer service notwithstanding all the scripted "I'm sorry to hear that, sirs" left me feeling absolutely powerless and with the feeling that, now that HP had my $500, they cared not a bit about my needs or satisfaction.

So, be warned this is not a good product. I wish I had listened to my friends and spent a little more cash for a better product instead of this toy laptop.

I'll preface this review with the fact that I own a Vaio desktop and a Vaio laptop and have been very pleased with both. Being a fan of the Sony Vaio series I sought out a new one and purchased this one. It was a mistake.

Immediately upon arrival the wifi would continuiously disconnect and reconnect. It was a pervasive issue on numerous networks so a little online research revealed that hundreds of people were having this same problem with this same machine. Sony support indicated they were aware and had been working (for months, apparently) to resolve the issue without success.

If that wasn't bad enough, the laptop suddenly developed the nasty habit of rapidly losing power and turning off. I don't mean "turning off" in the sense of performing a normal shutdown. I mean "turning off" in the sense of a rapid power outage and everything going black and losing any data one was working on.

This was unbearable, and combined the the wifi failures, prompted me to immediately return the machine. I would not recommend anyone else purchase this product.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program On first glance, this is a beautiful machine. It is sleek and thin. The keyboard is very nice with a blue backlight and the screen picture is gorgeous. If only it performed as well as it looked. I have had the same issues with this laptop as others have with my net connection going out and then not being able to be found. It has happened enough to make it using this laptop a laborious task. Also, this was my first experience with Windows 8 and I am not impressed. It is not intuitive and I much prefer older versions of Windows. Windows 8 would be better on a touch-screen laptop, which this one isn't. The mouse pad controls are neat but don't make up for the lack of a touch-screen.

Overall, I love the looks of this laptop but haven't liked using it much, particularly due to the net connection problems. I was hoping it would replace my old desktop but I am finding myself preferring to use my old clunker because it has Windows Vista and no internet connectivity issues.

Whoohoo! It didn't take me long to zero-in on version of choice and order my new Sony VAIO laptop and protection plan of choice…A great gift for self or others. Gratefully, the seller accelerated delivery time, appeasing my anxious waiting. My VAIO is a space saver with pleasing cosmetic slim line appearance, lighted keyboard. It's EZ to reprogram if needed, and has a high definition sound card along with numerous other user friendly features. Would I recommend others purchase a Sony laptop version of choice? Yes indeed! Why pay more than necessary for quality you deserve? I take care of my VAIO and it serves me well. Thanks for providing another wonderful product available for purchase online and special delivery which eliminated the run-around shopping in physical stores often presents. Offhand, I cannot think of anything I dislike about my new laptop. No regrets!

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO Fit Series SVF15214CXB 15.5-Inch Core i5 Laptop

This, aesthetically, is a beautiful machine, but, after setting it up, began freezing regularly. A patch was recommended (I've never had a laptop where in day two it required a patch) and still the problem persist. I should have got the HP Envy after all, but was sold on this because it was newer. Also, when I purchased this it was advertised as having a touch screen. There are two models I now know. The Fit and the Fit E, which is the one I wanted.

If this machine didn't have that freeze problem, I'm certain I would be quite happy.

I've had this laptop less than two months. It has had terrible Wi-Fi connection since the beginning, which I read is quite common. Today, the laptop started turning off on it's own for no reason. When I try to turn it on again, it won't work for the first few tries. When it does work, it turns off after a minute or two of being on.

This is a review of both (1) The Amazon Seller, "GW Store" and (2) Lenovo build quality and warranty service.

(1) Good

(2) Really BAD

That's it in a nutshell. Interested in details? Read on.

To be fair, I should be clear that the Amazon Seller, "GW Store" made available to me every option they could offer in helping me deal with the problems. They sell a Lenovo X230 Tablet that is well spec'd and was just what I needed for an extended trip abroad. That was the "Good". It was a "3434-CTO" unit and came with just a 1 year depot warranty.

Lenovo? The feature set looked to be exactly what was necessary for my needs. When the unit arrived, however, it died just a few hours out of the box. I contacted Lenovo support, and we agreed it was a dead main board. I contacted GW Store about a replacement. and they were out of stock and could not say they would have a new shipment in time to meet my fast approaching departure date. So, I sent it to Lenovo for warranty repair. I had about 3 weeks and surely it would be OK.

After a few days I checked the status online and found that it was on "Hold" for parts. Lenovo Memphis TN warranty facility did not have a main board? Wow. They must have been using a lot of them. I know the drill, so I called to escalate this to a manager. After a week, the board evidently came in, but then the online status screen indicated another "Hold". I quickly contacted the manager and learned it was on hold now for a cable! I explained my time constraints again and he told me that he had found 50 cables available but Memphis had been waiting on a cable to come through as usual.

Altogether, the unit was at Memphis for more than two weeks.

When it arrived, I began to set it up and quickly discovered that the ONLY working feature of the upper (display) assembly was the LCD and backlight. No touch, no speakers, no LED indicators (both front and back) no power-on button in tablet mode etc... Nada.

At that point, I checked GW Store and they had received a shipment. I ordered a replacement overnighted and sent the first unit back. In wrapping this up with GW Store, I learned that their tech was finding Lenovo uncooperative as well.

I am now traveling, and it has been 10 days with the second unit. So far, so good. If a new device works this long, it's probably OK. 90 days from now if it's still good I will feel better.

I custom-ordered from the Lenovo/Thinkpad site. My configuration:

Thinkpad X230 Tablet

+ Core i7 2.90 GHz Ivy Bridge processor

+ 8 GM RAM

+ 128 GB Solid-State Drive

+ 1366x768 Matte Multi-Touch Screen with Active Stylus

+ 9-cell extended battery (sticks out the back and adds a bulge at the bottom; the 6-cell battery just sticks out the back)

+ Windows 7 Pro

+ Ultra-Base 3 with DVD/RW optical drive

No discrete graphics card option

I've been a long-time Thinkpad fan--including 600E (late 1990s), R40 (early 2000s), T42 (mid 2000s), T420 (late 2000s)--for the rock-solid dependability, non-nonsense styling, and in particular the king-of-them-all keyboard. I mistakely tried a Dell Latitude E6400 for a couple of years, and I truly hated it, despite its own pointer stick and solid construction. When I decided to get this X230 Tablet, the only thing I was worried about was how the new keyboard was going to feel. Well, have no fear. I am a big fan of the new keyboard. It's got deep travel, its motion is the perfect blend between smooth travel and pleasing resistance, and the contoured surface actually feels comforable. This new keyboard is a winner. Other than that, there really isn't anything that needs to be said about this machine that the prospective buyer wouldn't already know. I loaded it up to the gills with the fastest and best of everything, except a 3G cellular card--totalled over $3000 MSRP before a the Ultrabase 3 and extra power adapters. On paper, the only thing the X230T lacks is discrete graphics, but the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics that comes with the Ivy Bridge chipset is good enough for my occasional Engineering analysis and 3D modeling work--just make sure to get a least 8 GB RAM to share with the inegrated graphics. Plus, the Ultrabase 3 is able to support dual monitors via its dual VGA+DisplayPort ports. Just one final tip--get the Multitouch screen; you'll be ready for Windows 8 Pro when it's released.

2012-11-24 UPDATE: I installed Windows 8 Pro upgrade on this computer the week Windows 8 was released. On the first boot-up, everything worked. I the installed all the Lenovo-provided Windows 8 drivers for this machine, and everything continued to work fine. Windows 8 works very well on this machine, as if it was designed for it.

I have only had this computer for two months and my experience has been no short of a nightmare. It malfunctions all the time. Bottom line, if you want to develop phone / tablet apps, this is a great computer for it.

Specs were for programming Visual Studio 2012 and Eclipse Juno (and occasionally Force.com IDE / Salesforce.com and WordPress). I also occasionally use Adobe CS suite and Microsoft SQL Server for developers 2012 as well as The VS tools and Office 2013...

Intel i7 CPU @ 2.90

16 GB ram

Windows 8 64 bit (upgraded from Windows 7)

Hard Disk: 500 gig no SSD

Docking station

Why Selected:

I selected it because it seemed the best/ easiest way to write mobile apps and easily debug in using the virtual hardware, touch screen and it is GREAT for this.

What's Wrong:

Firstthe computer was incomplete out of the box, Wi-Fi did not work and camera did not work. Two visits from support and this was fixed. I have come to expect this from many vendors, not just computer vendors. So no stars taken. Initially talking with Lenovo, support was REALLY BAD. I expected "Business Customer" support not "Consumer Level"

Summary:

As a software development machine, it's perfect, fast, and easy to test touch screen capabilities of virtual phones. With the docking station I can attach 6 phones and tablets for easy testing and debugging.

I don't use the touchpad, I had significant problems with my laser mouse, but found the right driver (system could not determine the correct driver) and solved the problem.

The tools with Lenovo to maintain updates is very easy to use and I appreciate it, I had to download all the Windows 8 updates, took a long time (why no single package I don't know), most functionality is supported in Windows 8, I had low expectations, so was pleasantly surprised. The utilities of Lenovo are really nice, I don't worry about maintaining my environment.

What I miss:

I wish it had a great on board video card (I knew it did not) because I would like to drive multiple IPS 27 inch monitors and play the occasional leading edge computer game. Games, I have another machine, multiple 27 inch monitors, there is no work around.

I bought this laptop here, on Amazon, and everything about the purchase process was great. It actually arrived a day earlier than estimated, so no complaints there. I was able to connect it to internet right away. I like the whole appearance, it's a very good looking laptop. The keyboard feels very nice and the touchscreen is very responsive. The computer is fast enough for what I do, which isn't much though. I check my emails, read some newspapers, a little bit of Facebook and sometimes watch a TV show or a movie. I also use Skype to keep in touch with my family. Which brings me to the reason I only gave it 3 stars: the internet drops off sometimes and I know it's the computer, not the actual internet. It doesn't last long, only for a minute or so, but it's enough to interrupt my calls. It's really very annoying especially considering that you pay almost $200 more than you would pay for a different brand.

I am just so pleased with this ASUS laptop. I have now been playing and messing with the new laptop as well as the new to me Windows 8 which overall is not that bad once you get the hang of it. As for the laptop I did my studying before jumping in and buying a decent priced laptop. I decided to go with this laptop due to the price, specs, and having dealt with ASUS with my Nexus 7 which everyone knows was incredible for the price. I was shopping around for a few days before making my mind up on this laptop. I am very pleased with this purchase. I tried a few games already just to see how well the laptop can run the games right out the box, and I am pleased. Far Cry 3 runs great, as do a few other PC games I tried out. Just please keep in mind this laptop is not made for gaming so do not expect some of the newer games coming out to run on maximum settings. The speed of this little bad boy is incredible. The pc has yet to really heat up or make a noise this is after hours of use at a time. The laptop seems really well built. The keyboard is very responsive. Also I was very surprised at how great the screen looks for being only 720p, plus very please at how loud the speakers are for this very overall well put together laptop. The laptop also looks and feels great. I would not try it but I am sure it can take a fall or two. I paid 450 and I honestly if I had hands on prior I would not have mind paying a few hundred more, yes it is really that good. Anyways if your looking for a great laptop for a great price you have one here. Enjoy!

So im a big time gamer and my desktop was assembled by myself and cost me a good chunk of cash, but I needed a portable gaming laptop for the weekends and dont have the cash to shell out for one. This thing is a beast, I dont know how it plays the games it does with the specs that are on it but Ive been playing League of Legends, black ops 2, dota2, starcraft, Final Fantasy 14 mmorpg, world of warcraft all on medium settings with 60 fps, this thing stays cool as can be, and the battery life while gaming straight through is three hours which is falsely advertised but highly expected from anyone who knows a thing about computers. If you are looking for something cheap and will play any current game on the market at medium settings this thing is for you, IT IS the cheapest gaming laptop on the market period! It also does all those boring things like surf web and school project junk ^^ without any stuttering, and can run multiple apps at a time with no lag.

Best Deals for ASUS K55N-DB81 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

The raw specs on this laptop are simply the best at the price.

The main PROs:

-The AMD A8 is a stellar processor (or rather, "APU"). You can now officially play most of the games on the market with a laptop under 400 dollars. In a recent test, the only game that really pushed it past the limit and couldn't run was the latest Crysis, which pushes just about anything to its limits. While Intel makes great CPUs, they've focused too much on high-end raw processing power for desktops/servers and most of their affordable laptop hardware is sorely lacking for VIDEO performance. Thanks to Amazon for taking my Intel i3 back so I could order one of these instead.

-More RAM than most computers at this price (6 vs 4 gb). Translation: You can have more stuff open at once.

-More hard drive space than most computers at this price (750 vs 500 gb). More storage.

The main CONs:

-Windows 8. While one can indeed "get used to it", it never stops feeling like a major step backwards from Windows 7 and even from XP. However, this is in no way the fault of ASUS or AMD.

Matters of preference:

-Some glare. I prefer the anti-glare monitors available on the Samsung 3/5/7 Series and HP Probooks/Elitebooks.

-The keyboard is also a matter of preference but I prefer the older style over the cutesy "chicklet" style.

Honest reviews on ASUS K55N-DB81 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

The laptop itself is a truly amazing product. I was fortunate enough to purchase this laptop whilst it was slightly cheaper, but even now the ASUS K55 is an incredible "bang for your buck." There are absolutely no regrets towards purchasing this laptop. Unfortunately I have come across a small issue regarding the screen, and have no clue how it was conceived. This laptop has been under my care for at least two weeks, all the while furiously curb-stomping any task I have thrown at it, but for some reason the screen has started to fail on me. The top, roughly 1/6th, portion of the screen is completely incapable of anything other than emitting a funky grey or yellow color. I don't know if I had placed the laptop in my bag incorrectly as I was packing during the morning, or if some other nuance managed to take advantage of me. Also, even though I would LOVE to have this replaced, apparently it is not an applicable option.

So with that, I will warn all possible customers to be as careful as possible with the screen. Other than that, this laptop is a magnificent product for whatever you may need it for. It is incredibly fast and responsive, and will dominate any task you throw at it. If I were able to get a replacement, and not have to settle for a refund, (or the screen itself didn't give out on me) this laptop would definitely have had received five stars.

TL;DR

Pros:

Fast and Responsive A8 quadcore processor

Very suitable large hard drive

Hard drive is also double partitioned (C: & D:)

Beautiful 720p graphics

Battery life is decent

Cons:

The screen is either very weak, or mine was defective

The mouse pad takes a little getting used to

Other:

Windows 8 is confusing at first, but I don't see any of the 'major' issues others come up with. Personally, I can dwell in the desktop portion of the OS and go back to the home screen whenever I want to look at stock or other feeds.

This is an amazing machine for the $$. There are others on the market right now for twice the price and more that dont have as much hardware as this thing does, plus its an Asus, an absolute top tier brand. It looks and feels like you could drop it off of a 30 story building and it would just laugh it off. Mind you, it isnt really attractive or lightweight and has a pretty big footprint, but its as solid a machine as you can buy. IF they were charging even $200 more it would be a bargain.

I've had this computer for 5 months with no issues. I looked at HP, Sony, Apple, and Asus. I wanted a quality high performance laptop to replace a desktop unit. I don't want to watch movies on my computer that's why I own two nice large TV's, so 15.5" screen is perfect. I feel it's very portable, it fits into a normal briefcase and allows a full size keyboard with numerical keypad. This unit has a separate video card and a hi-rez screen so the picture is excellent. Audio is marginal as are all laptops. I really like the wi-fi performance, very fast downloading of web pages. One of the main reasons I bought this model is the USB 3. I bought two outboard 2 TB drives to store photos and music, very fast loading of huge files as well as perfect playback of large audio files when I hook up to the stereo system. Over the months of researching computers I read many reviews of people criticizing units for noisy fans and excessive heat. This thing has never even gotten warm so I'm not sure if it has a fan! Remarkable when you realize it's running a quad core i-7, 6 GB of memory with another gig on the video card. My HP (company unit) has a fan and it comes on regularly. I do have one criticism, the touchpad is off center relative to the keys which means that as you type you need to lift your right hand/thumb or the page will scroll or the cursor moves. Speaking of the touchpad, it's one of those multitouch jobs so you can pinch, scroll, rotate, etc., very cool. I bought this at BestBuy and the geek squad tech told me that there were fewer returns and repairs on Samsung laptops than any of the brands they carry. Well, we'll see, knock knock knock on wood. Bottom line, I'm very happy with this computer and I'm very difficult to please!

I am quite happy with this unit. I bought it for about $650 for home use and as another reviewer mentioned, it's pretty sleek, lightweight and fast. I had never intended to take it anywhere but as it is so lightweight I have used it on the go. I have an ipad and even as that is usually my travel buddy, the compact nature (even as its 15") is really something to be noted. I have used the blu-ray, and while that wasn't the selling point for me when I bought this.. it's a fantastic little addition. (may not be around much longer anyway)

The processor is fast and I have had a few issues with screen freezes, but I too believe that is a windows fault not the computer itself. I think this dropped down to the low price due to a new series of Samsung laptops being released... bu i expect this to last me a minimum of 5 years. Im very happy with it.

Best Deals for Samsung RC512-S02 Core i7-2630QM 2GHz 6GB 750GB Blu-ray

When I first received this laptop, I was expecting a very heavy-duty, powerhouse machine that would likely never leave my desk. To my suprise, this machine has ended up being amazingly portable, sleek, and nice to use. The features are great, and the amount of fully-licensed included software is incredible. I can encode and burn DVD's within a couple hours, watch movies from my hard drive in 1080p on my TV using the inbuilt HDMI port, and even get WiFi anywhere in my city using the inbuilt WiMax adapter (if you pay for a 4g service, that is). Sometimes my PC still does freeze though, but I'm going to blame that on Windows and the sheer number of applications that I keep running at all times. Speedboot is a real blessing for me on the go, but be aware that it causes many sensitive applications to crash while using it. Gaming wasn't as nearly as great as expected, but I barely play any gpu-intensive games anyways so it's pretty good for the basics. I had some problems playing MineCraft :D but once again I'm going to blame it on Windows.

Overall, I'm really happy I bought this machine, and would definitely recommend it to others. When I bought it, it was for $900 and I thought I got a great deal...so at $600, it's definitely a steal!!

Honest reviews on Samsung RC512-S02 Core i7-2630QM 2GHz 6GB 750GB Blu-ray

We are on our second laptop of this model (RC512-S02) The first one was returned after two days of it crashing and shocking us when touched. It was apparent the power connection was loose and causing the problem. The second identical one worked well for several months and now this one is shocking and crashing as well. It is a random thing and it will now go back for a laptop from a different manufacturer . It is a shame as this is a fast computer and appears well made but it is not reliable. The original model S01 wss recalled by Samsung over the problem with the Intel CPU error. We have all Samsung appliances in our kitchen and love them but this is not up to Samsung's standards. After talking with Samsung tech support their advice was to return it.

This is really a one-compromise (I'll get to that in a minute) value; and the one compromise is quite small if you really want to get around it. In short, this is a really rounded out quality laptop. Here are a few things I like about it:

-Build Quality: This thing is a tank! I've test-dropped it once on a well-carpeted area and accidentally dropped mine on a hard-wood floor, and not even a chip has come off of the plastic. The shell is a combo aluminum-plastic assembly and holds up quite well to damage. No damage to the optical drive as well. There's also a bit of shock absorption around the hard drive. MacBook owners will know that aluminum is a strong metal, and the plastic on the shell is thick, weighty, and quality plastic. Great build.

-Hardware: You can read the list. All quality, all fast, all powerful. The only thing I have a tiny bit of concern about is the Intel Wifi chip inside. This will make running Linux harder for a first timer, but Googling around will assist you in finding a driver. Optimus won't work with Linux from what I hear anyway; this really is a laptop designed for Windows. Feel free to comment in case I'm wrong however!

-Software: Believe it or not, the amount of crud is actually pretty low on this machine. However, I'm a big fan of a clean Windows installation, so I wiped the hard drive and ran a clean installation. This gave me a speed boost of about 10%. Be sure to use the recovery software to burn a driver disk before doing this though, or download the drivers to an external disk.

-Recovery: Recovery is made simple through the self-booting recovery partition. Since I bought it, I cloned the recovery partition and moved it to another drive; and hammering the "Boot Recovery Partition" key during boot still works, even on an external hard drive. A nice touch. Don't worry if you mess something up, it can be easily restored. Restoration takes a bit of time though.

The two minor things I don't like about this machine:

-Display: The display on this thing, when things are set to defaults, is garbage. 1600x900 would have been a bit more preferable, but even worse than resolution; this thing has very little contrast right out of the box. Using Intel's graphics hardware control panel, you can adjust contrast and gamma to your liking; but initial impressions were quite low for me. Also, there is a HDMI port, so you can hook up an external monitor.

-Optical Drive: Yeah, it's a Blu-Ray drive; which is great for reading huge swaths of data (and the games are inevitably going either Blu-Ray or direct download). However, this drive is really slow. I read into this and found out it's just an issue with Blu-Ray drives in general. Again, feel free to correct me in the comments. I don't consider this to be a "point off" the rating, it's just a minor nit-pick.

Personal usage/experience:

-"Daily" Stuff: Web browsing, watching videos, listening to music, all pretty decent on this machine. The lower resolution makes it tough to multitask (as in, putting windows by windows), but I'm generally not in the mood to multitask on a smaller screen anyway. The speakers are pretty good for built-in laptop speakers; and as noted before, watching videos works well after changing the color settings. The Core i7/Intel integrated graphics actually give pretty good battery life too, I get roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes to 4 hours and 30 minutes.

-Gaming: Here's where low resolution actually comes in handy. You can maximize all settings on your games and chances are, your framerates will be very good! The only slowdowns I have encountered were DirectX 9 games designed to push the technology and the very latest games. However, turning stuff down from "very high" to "high" does not have that much of a visual effect on games today, and this is good news.

-Media Rendering: This thing is also beastly when it comes to media and content creation. The chipset inside allows programs to tap into the integrated graphics processing built into the CPU as well as use the dedicated Nvidia chipset to assist in rendering. It competes favorably with my year-old desktop, which is a Core i5 setup with a GTX 275 graphics card. No complaints here.

All in all, if you can get this thing for under $800, it's a great value.

For the price, this laptop is hard to beat. Check out the features: 500GB Hybrid HD (30GB SSD), 8 GB RAM, excellent screen with edge to edge brightness; aluminum case with plastic bottom; 10 numeric keypad.

It's an i5, so it's going to have some fan noise, but it's minor. The only thing it needs but doesn't have is discrete graphics. Other than that its a great little computer.

By the way, this laptop has wonderful audio imaging! Stereo channel separation is better on this laptop than any I've ever heard. The speakers are a little lacking but put on your favorite track and listen... you'll be able to hear information coming from both channels; very, very enjoyable. One suggestion however.... when listening to music use the laptop on a table as the speakers are on the bottom of the unit and would otherwise fire into your knees and muffle output otherwise. Other than that, a very nice little laptop.

This "ultrabook" is basically replacing my old work horse. I bought it as a machine that could tide me over until I have time to build a new system. I needed something that had enough of everything to do all the work I needed, not so much for gaming.

I bought this as an open box and it came in at about $500 + tax. I love the cosmetics of it, which wasn't a factor in purchasing, but feels like a luxury at this point.

The battery has been great, I haven't had to bring my power supply with me even though I take off to work on the machine for about 3 hours at a time, I never had an issue no matter how much I surf or how many processes I'm running (including an Apache server stack).

I hear there are hackitosh possibilities with this so I may explore a dual boot option in the future.

The sound is decent but not out of this world, almost good in fact. The resolution is a little hard to get used to. I haven't used a machine with this low of resolution in many many years at least like 7, but it's fine.

My dislikes there's a long list, but at the same time, I'm still very happy with the purchase.

1) the keyboard size. I don't think it was necessary to have a number pad on this device, in fact I didn't even consider it when making the purchase but now see that it gets in the way and I would have preferred a bit more typing space.

2) the track pad, I think it should be smaller because I don't have huge hands but I'm constantly gracing it with my lower thumb area and it brings up all kinds of screens in Windows 8 they could even have positioned the track pad slightly off center and that would have helped as it stands, there's just about 1/4 inch too little space to type without some effort to avoid the track pad.

3) no vga out (HDMI to DVI cable on Amazon for like $6 solved this)

4) seemingly no way to upgrade the RAM. I'm planning to buy an 8gb RAM chip to replace the 4gb chip that's in there hopefully it will work.

5) no clear information on how to access the 20gb SSD after 2 weeks nw, I still don't know if it's in use. you can see the machine recognizes something by checking the Task Manager Performance tab in Windows 8.

6) the biggest issue of all is the glossiness of the screen. This is common I hear for Acer, and it's a major annoyance. I'm going to learn to live with it, but this screen is super glossy and reflective.

7) Volume control via keyboard it's just overall not a great experience.

8) Home, Pg Up, Pg Dn, End keys they are not side by side and not easy to access going to try and switch them in the Bios.

Wish List for this thing I wish there were a couple other things which would probably effect the price which I wouldn't want:

1) dedicated video card I hear-tell there is a model out there that has this, wish mine did, and I could have found it on open box sale, I would have paid the extra even though it would be over the budget.

2) touch screen again, I hear there is a version with too wish mine had it for this price.

3) single key volume controls _ don't want to have to use both hands to keyboard control my volume it's more annoying than I ever thought it would be.

Overall, with the open box price, I'm happy. Hopefully I can switch out some keys with the Bios and switch out the RAM with a higher chip. Netflix and Eclipse and all the usual things run fine as it is.

I mean, this is a simple computer that has just the necessary, no extras, the one I had before this one had digital volume control, digital wifi control, direct connect to video and video controllers, cd cover maker, etc. things I do not miss, and just realized that those things just jack up the price, for my previous computer cost twice as much.

This is a nice computer, it has a big screen but still is a light weight, fast w nice amount of memory, it does have the HDMI outlet which I use, the memory card reader, camera, and the cd/ dvd combo.

Over all preety pleased with this computer and you cant beat the price. Although I bought it at best buy for less that is advertized here on Amazon.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L775-S7307 Laptop Computer with Windows 7

I'm writing this review on my Mac as I wait for my Toshiba Satellite L775 to do basic tasks. Reasons I hate this computer:

It cannot open a browser in a timely manner.

It takes 5 minutes to start up and get online.

It cannot do anything at all in a timely manner.

The battery life out of the box is very poor. I was only able to watch half of a movie using the DVD drive on the battery.

The screen quality is poor.

The track pad is the worst I've ever used (it is just some touch surface pasted on the plastic).

Once you add up all the time you waste waiting for this computer (time is money, but it is also your life getting wasted) and dealing with its poor hardware, then you'll realize that this computer is no deal. For the same price, you can get a 5-year old Mac that is much much faster, because the software is far better and the hardware is higher quality (even if the processor is "clocked" at the same speed or slower than this Toshiba, everything will be much faster than on this Toshiba).

The only reason I don't give this 1 star but rather 2 stars is that I'm sure the Windows software shares some of the blame.

Alright, looks like my browser and email are now finally open on the Toshiba so I can complete my monthly Windows tasks and then put this thing back into storage for another month.

Computer was just as described. Delivered quickly. I had bought another Toshiba and returned it (Walmart) and this was way better. Speakers were good which was a big problem with the first one. Plenty of memory for what we needed it for. Overall very happy with no complaints.

I bought this computer a year ago for college and did not see a single computer at college that I would rather have (for the price). I love the super-small, lightweight design. I can carry it in a backpack and the backpack feels empty. It is easy to carry around campus and use anywhere I want. The battery consistently lasts over 5 hours--more if I make an effort to use less battery with toshiba's eco setting. It is plenty fast for me and does all I need.

There are a few things I don't like about it. I wish the keys were backlit. I have trouble typing in a dark room (I'm not a very good typist though) unless I turn the screen brightness up all the way. The keyboard is small, but easily usable once you get used to it. The screen is a terrible glossy finish and it's nearly impossible to see in direct sunlight. In Adobe Photoshop CS6, there are a couple features that cannot be used with Toshiba's graphic processor, but it does ALMOST everything I want. These are all little complaints, and, as you can tell, they did not even warrant a loss of a star on the review from me.

If you want a portable, light computer that can do almost anything you ask of it, you will not be disappointed with this laptop. I highly recommend it.

Edit: Found out how to use touchpad's multitouch gestures. Very handy.

I got this laptop through the Microsoft store because they were offering a student discount. I bought this laptop for %719.99 plus tax. So far it has topped my previous laptop, the Sony Vaio VGN RW. I honestly thing that for the price it tops even the macbook pro's. The Toshiba has the core i5 with amazing battery life and portability.

The only drawbacks is that the speakers aren't that impressive but other than that it has performed well beyond expectations. I highly recommend this laptop for those who save a bit of money but still have the functionality of a macbook.

I hate that I have to return the Toshiba Portege R835-P55X back to Microsoft. I love the size, the weight, the power, and the silence of the fan while doing regular computing. The reason I have to return it is because when I play flash-based games, it slows to a crawl, the fan gets very loud, and it heats up to dangerous temperatures. I checked the temps one time and my digital thermometer read 145 degrees. Thank goodness it wasn't on my lap. The only other complaint I have is the keyboard is a little hard to use. The keys are very slick and need a bit more pressure to depress. I use my nails to type so this wasn't a pleasant experience for me.

For others contemplating this model or other R835's from various sources, I would recommend it as long as the problems I experienced were just because of my defective machine.

Barring the defects:

PROS (in addition to the above-mentioned):

* Fast start-up from sleep

* Hot USB so can charge items even when the computer is off

* Plays HD videos very well

* Long battery life (however, didn't get close to 9 hours, maybe 6)

* Easy access "Eco" button to switch between power saving or max power

CONS:

* Keyboard

* No visual for volume up/down

I like the appearance most, metal and decent.

Of course superlight and easy to carry.

battery lasts at 5 hours at regular use.

And quick reaction, large drive space.

Screen a little small to some people though.

Computer arrived on time. It was so easy to make it work. I was able to easily download the security program that I wanted, and my husband is using the computer with no trouble at all.

I only need to change the font inside the computer and I have not been able to figure that out. Other than that we are happy with the computer and finding the computer online thru amazon was very easy and convenient.

Out of the box, seems a bit cheaper than the other 3 Dell products I have bought in the past ( 2 laptops and a desk top). Problems never resolved after 2 months with Dell. 1) Wireless connection in my home inconsistent at best, drop-out of connection ever 5-10min (not the case with any other device in my home). Keypad, almost on usable, would jump to other locations at any given time, again never had this problem with any other computer. Sorry to say,but Dell seems to be cutting back a quality. I bought 4 of these computers for all of my children for Christmas, it is a wonderful gift. This is perfect for just starting out and for school projects. They are so happy with them. It was very inexpensive and wonderful for the price. We had bought 4 bundle deals from best buy @ $299 each.

I bought two of these laptops, one for me and one for the wife, from Costco in December of 2012. All in all not a bad laptop for my needs. Use mainly for work, spreadsheets and presentations and all that. Arrived prepackaged with windows 8 and Microsoft office. I'm only giving two stars because in the past year both laptops have had the exact same problem. Both suffered lcd screen burnout. Luckily we had, as we always do, purchased an extended warranty through Costco and simply called the concierge service to have each repaired. In each instance Dell had the laptop fixed within a week with no other issues since. If we hadn't purchased an extended warranty we would have been S.O.L.

Honest reviews on Inspiron 3520 15 Inch Notebook/laptop Computer Windows 8 64-bit

I received this computer as a gift for Christmas in 2012. Really cheaply made and keyboard is overly sensitive. The same day, the mousepad went out. I ignored this since the bundle came with a wireless mouse. In May, the hard drive stopped working. I contacted Dell who were very polite and attentive and they resolved the issue, saying the hard drive had gone bad. In August, the LCD screen burned out (which is not covered by the warranty). They want $258 parts and service and $12 in tax to replace the LCD. I'm going to replace the screen myself, sell it and trade up to a new BRAND and model. Overall good and persistent customer service but the WORST piece of equipment I've ever owned. Going back to the Sony Vaio.

I bought this computer on December 2012, my biggest problem with it, is that is very very slow. The application (camera, music, videos) and also the browser take a lot of time to open.
