I am definitely satisfied with the purchase, good price, excellent computer.

it just has one issue when connecting to wifi, it seams to have low "antenna" capacity, though it works fine when the wifi signal is good.

I got the laptop factory refurbished. It didn't have even the smallest scratch.

The only problem is the know wifi issue. With some (not all) wifi routers, the wifi speed decreases dramatically (down to 6Mbps).

Apart from that, super fast, didn't encounter any work or multimedia task that it couldn't handle.

This is the most beautiful laptop I've ever seen. I spent a lot of time searching for something that was both stylish and practical and now I'm happy to say I found it. I use this laptop for my daily activities such as work reports, online shopping, web browsing, skype chating and movie watching. The overall performance of this laptop is excellent, the only thing I would have to say is that the sound could be a little better, although is good enough. The fan doesn't make any noise at all and I admit I was a little concerned about this 'cause I had heard that the fan in Vaio's was loud, but this is not the case. I would recommend this product to anyone interested in buying a great machine.

This Sony Vaio is hard to get your hands off of. First of all, it looks so sleek and it's so well designed you don't want to get your fingerprints all over it. Secondly, you notice that you can run several programs at once like firefox, aol, etc. etc. and the computer still functions at a relatively fast speed. I would like to see if adding the 4 GB of RAM would do anything significant but I can't say that I'm displeased with how it's functioning right now. It also comes with a Windows 7 product installed; unlike other computers where you get the starter kit and then you have to pay money to get it going. I hooked 2 decent speakers to the Vaio and boy O boy the sound blasts you away. It comes with a very well built media center and lots of little applications you can use to organize your media files. Anyway, I hope you love yours as much as I'm enjoying my new computer. I give it 5 Stars.

Expected Sony quality. Thank goodness it is only Windows 7. I am disappointed that Sonly dropped the Firewire and Memory Stick connections standards Sony promoted and that several of my Sony products use. To add insult to this, there is no PCMCIA slot to add an adapter. So for as far as meeting my expectations of these standards, I'd only give the laptop a 2.9. But I compromise at 4 because otherwise it's of highest quality.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO EG2 Series VPCEG23FX/W 14-Inch Laptop (Glacier White)

Don't have enough room here to express how very happy I am with Sony! especially with my pink (shiny) Vaio laptop! Not only does it catch every eye with the beautiful case, but the company has been extremely great with helping me with all my questions and assisted me for a year now! My pink Vaio is light weight and very convenient. Most recently while staying at hospital with family, had many people asking me about it. Caught the eyes of several doctors and they asked about it. One of them told me he is placing order for the silver metallic "James Bond 007" Vaio. Sony hotline and Vaio help center have been patient and most helpful. Mine is almost a year old and I still love it!

DON'T BUY A SONY VAIO.

Last Christmas I purchased this Sony Vaio. It worked fine with no problems until last week I opened up the computer to use it and the screen was black and white with lines across it. Nothing worked on the computer anymore, you could not type or login the screen was frozen on this background. I had not physically damaged in any way but no longer worked at all.

I called the sony repair center as it is still under the warranty. I was told it would be $600 to fix the issue with the computer. I told them that it was still under warranty, and they said because it was physically damaged I would have to pay, even though nothing physical happened to my computer, it just stopped functioning. I suggest you buy any other, less expensive computer that will help you if you need any repairs done.

MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Review

MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

i am currently writing this review after several weeks of use. i spent about 3 weeks researching different laptops before i got this one. it was no easy task. i hope this review will help you decide.

i have the 1.6GHz, 4GB Ram, & 128GB Flash Storage. (not sure if this review will be placed for this specific spec or for all MacBook Air 11".)

LAPTOP USE:

mainly for work. checking email and managing contacts. viewing documents.

i am also an amateur photographer so i will be doing some light photo work.

huge gamer. see below for more details.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION:

there's not much to say regarding this. it's built like no other machine i've ever used. it's rock solid. i have read some reviews stating that they were concerned with the joint where the screen meets the keyboard area but it should not be of any concern. it feels great in your hands. i can find no flaws with the laptop itself. make sure you go to an Apple Store and play with it to see for yourself.

OS:

i am currently running both OS X 10.6.5 & Windows 7 Ultimate 64. it came installed with OS X 10.6.4. make sure you update this before you install anything.

Apple states that you can only install Windows 7 through Boot Camp using a DVD player. after some research before i bought the laptop, i found this to not be true.

by using an open-source program called rEFIt, you can install Windows 7 using a USB flash drive. you can also install Linux, if you wish. by using this program you can dual boot or even TRIPLE BOOT on your MacBook Air.

if you would like to install Windows 7 using a USB flash drive, you can use a program by Microsoft called "Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool" to accomplish this. make sure your USB flash drive is at least 4GB for installation. YOU ALSO NEED A COPY OF WINDOWS THAT YOU PLAN ON INSTALLING HANDY.

INSTALLING WINDOWS WITH A USB FLASH DRIVE...

** UPDATE ADDED **

** before you go and install Windows 7 on your shiny new MacBook make sure you've updated your OS X to 10.6.5 first! i was so excited to get Win7 on my MBA that i installed it first before upgrading. i had installed EVERYTHING. all my PC programs and had it set up perfectly. bad mistake. when i upgraded the patch it wiped my NTFS (Windows 7) partition and everything there. ugh. save yourself that headache and PLEASE UPDATE OS X to 10.6.5 FIRST!!!

i have recently increased my Mac partition to allow for more room for my Mac needs. it is now at 48GB for Mac and 70GB for Windows. your needs may vary so give yourself ample space for both partitions. if at a later time you need to increase/decrease your partition sizes, you can do so easily by doing a FULL BACKUP WITH A SYSTEM IMAGE using Windows BACKUP or any other Backup program. remove your Windows partition ONLY AFTER doing the backup. go into Boot Camp Asst and create a new partition. connect your choice of Windows 7 installation, either USB OR DVD. do a RESTORE with the backup of the system image and backup files you made. VOILA... you have everything the way it is again. ***

make sure you first go into OS X. click on Boot Camp, which you can find using the Finder feature or go into your Utilities folder. get to the second page. download the Windows support software for your Mac. you're going to need it later after you've installed Windows. save this on your other PC. hopefully you have a PC to run that Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool. just go through the steps it tells you and you should be done. now place the "WindowsSupport" folder you dl'ed through Boot Camp onto your flash drive. you should have 3.65GB used. i used Windows 7 Ultimate 64 so your size may be less.

now you should already have installed rEFIt. if not, you should do so now. follow the instructions on their site. this gets installed through OS X, just in case you're wondering. after installation, make sure you reboot your MB Air at least twice. don't ask me why. it just takes at least twice before it gets fully working.

as you're about to do your second reboot, plug in the flash drive you have Windows 7 installed. as your MBA loads up, you should get a screen with a few icons, which you may have noticed after your first reboot. just select your USB drive and VOILA! you should now be starting your Windows 7 installation. once you're done make sure you install the Boot Camp drivers in the "WindowsSupport" folder. Boot Camp 3.2 is out so make sure you update to that ONLY AFTER you've installed 3.1 first. you will not be allowed to install 3.2 without 3.1 installed.

WINDOWS 7 GENERAL USAGE:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 runs smoothly on the MBA. i was very surprised. it boots up almost as quickly as my 3.4GHz desktop which has a SSD drive. considering the MBA only has 1.6GHz this thing can only be labled as a BEAST. i like to tinker with my computer a lot so i've removed many startup services and programs that i don't need and just eat up valuable resources. i will not go into details about it now but if you are curious just ask and i will comment back with some good info for you.

i have installed Lightroom 3.3 and Photoshop CS5 and they run very nicely. it will definitely not give you the same experience as a 3.4GHz desktop but considering the size of this laptop, you should be pleased.

Hulu & Youtube runs quite nicely. definitely not as smooth as my desktop but then again look at the size of this laptop.

i personally have not installed Windows Office 2010 because i've opted to go with the free Libre Office program. it is still in beta stages but runs quite nicely without any major hiccups. i also have Firefox and Thunderbird installed. they both run well.

WINDOWS 7 GAMING USAGE:

i currently play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Black Ops. i installed both on the MBA. i was quite shocked that it ran pretty well. of course, you will most likely have to run at lowest settings but if you need to get your fix for blood and you're away from home then you can! let's be realistic though. you really don't want to be playing games on a 11' screen. to be honest, i had such a hard time seeing enemies that were far away in BFBC2.

MAC USAGE:

this is my first Mac. i was very hesitant booting up the MBA the first time. it's like that first day at high school... as a freshman. you thought you knew it all but now you're in a totally new environment. fear strikes in.

don't fret. you're about to embark on a wonderful new adventure!

i am beginning to love the Mac OS X. it's so stable and runs as smooth as a babies bootie on this laptop.

i have Aperture 3, Final Cut Express 4, Lightroom 3.3, Photoshop CS5, Firefox, and Thunderbird installed on the Mac OS X. they all run very well. Final Cut Express will not be the same as a desktop experience most definitely but you can do some light work on your MBA. i also suggest you install a program called Onyx to remove any garbage files. also get Growl. a very nifty program for Mac's.

** UPDATE ADDED **

** a commenter had asked about doing a fresh install of the Mac OS X. i know what he meant immediately. most laptops come with some sort of BLOATWARE (garbage programs that slow your system down). Mac's are not plagued by this issue so you do not have to worry. since the storage on your MBA will be limited compared to other systems, every bit of free space is valuable. OS X contains files for use with X11, which is a X Window System implementation for running X11-based applications on Mac OS X. Based on the de facto-standard for X11, the open source XFree86 project, X11 for Mac OS X is compatible, fast and fully integrated with Mac OS X. It includes the full X11R6.6 technology including a window server, libraries and basic utilities such as xterm. if you have no idea what i just wrote, then you won't need this. :) i'm not sure if it's installed by default but since i had to do a fresh reinstall due to the OS X 10.6.5 Update patch wiping my Windows partition. there are also over 1GB worth of language support files within OS X and other Mac programs. you may want to do a fresh install due to these reasons but if X11 is not a concern of yours and only removing the language files then there is an easy solution. check below for more details under the "RECOMMENDED MAC OS X PROGRAMS". **

RECOMMENDED MAC OS X PROGRAMS:

after a few more weeks of use, i have been using OS X a lot more than i had first thought i would. due to these reasons, i have been researching for more OS X programs. here are my results. i will add more as i come across them.

1. CleanMyMac: this program is A MUST HAVE. it does so much i can't even begin to tell you everything it does. basically, it cleans out all your garbage files, unnecessary junk, and language support that you won't need. i gained over 2GB worth of storage space from this program. THAT'S A LOT! considering i just got my MacBook so it wouldn't have any accumulated that many temp files. it goes to show you how many other files there are you don't need.

2. Onyx 2.2.1: this is another MUST HAVE. it is a multifunction utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run miscellaneous tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock and of some of Apple's own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.

3. KisMAC: it is an open-source and free sniffer/scanner application for Mac OS X. i've used this for when i'm out and need to get more WiFi info than is given through OS X. many of you probably won't need it but it's a nice program to have.

4. WinClone: clones your Boot Camp partition. can be useful for many applications. (use with precaution, as it seems to be no longer developed. i suggest you google this application and see if it fits your needs.)

5. Libre Office: an open-source Office platform program. it's the better version of Open Office, in my opinion. it's FREE so try it. it's also available for PC.

6. Text Wrangler: 90% of you won't need this, but for the other 10% it can be very useful. this is the only free program that does this that i could find. A powerful and richly-featured tool for composing, modifying, and transforming text stored in plain-text files. It features flexible "grep" pattern-based search and replace, syntax coloring, and function navigation for C, C++, and Objective-C. Also includes integration with the UNIX command line via the "edit" tool, built-in support for opening and saving files to remote FTP servers, and a rich plug-in architecture.

I should admit upfront that I am not a scientist or engineer. Nor am I a gamer or video editor. I am a scholar and writer, so my use of this machine is largely limited to word processing, Power Point presentations, web browsing, and watching streaming videos. Thus, my experience will very likely differ from those who'll be using this computer to run several large and sophisticated programs simultaneously. Given these parameters, I am simply thrilled with this addition to Apple's MacBook collection. I am a relatively recent convert to Apple products after nearly two decades on PCs. So my views might be positively colored somewhat by the enthusiasm of the newly converted. I have been using a MacBook Pro 13" for the last year or so and I can safely say that this new MacBook Air 11" is simply a charm and a wonderful companion to the larger computer. Mine is the fully maxed-out model, with the factory-installed 1.6 chip, 4GB ram and 128 flash. I bought it to use for travel to libraries and research centers, and to carry easily from home to school. While I've only had the machine for a short time, there is no doubt this will be instantly more useful than any PC or Apple I've owned before. I have now spent several hours running it through its paces and I am genuinely impressed.

My first reaction was that it truly is as amazingly thin and sleek as it looks in the ads--almost disconcertingly so compared to my MacBook Pro. My first few times typing, I thought I might break it, it seemed so thin. But it's a toughie, no doubt about it. Light yet solid. Easily slips into my bag--hardly noticeable. It took almost no time at all to set up. The battery charged in less than an hour and, so far at least, seems to run almost as long as my Pro, though I do have to be especially careful to quit programs I'm not using to preserve and prolong power. I installed Office Suite 2011 in 15 minutes via the wireless network through the university. No need for a disk drive in this instance. Even more exciting, it easily networked wirelessly with my Pro and I was then able to operate its DVD drive as if it were part of the Air. Amazing. Assuming you have another MacBook, there really is no need for a DVD drive in this machine.

Since I write for a living, having a comfortable keyboard is essential. I was delighted and surprised to see that the 11" Air has a keyboard that measures exactly the same as my 13" Pro--no difference whatsoever. And the overall feeling is quite good with just enough bounce and resistance--essential in my view for effective typing. Only thing lacking are the illuminated keys--a nice feature, but certainly not essential. I don't think I'll miss it. The backlit screen is physically smaller, of course. But there are more pixels per inch, so it is amazingly bright and crisp. In fact, in a side-by-side comparison, this screen is every bit as brilliant as the screen on my Pro, and is certainly brighter and with greater high and low contrasts than the screen on the standard MacBook. Again, I am quite delightfully surprised by how good this screen is, since I was expecting something less in such a small package. Everything reads slightly smaller as a result, of course. But I still have no trouble reading whatever's on the screen. I imagine people with poor vision might have a slightly harder time reading their usual sites and documents. But I have no trouble--and my eyes are not perfect by any means. The improved track pad is a joy to use and genuinely intuitive. I am especially pleased to see the one finger "tap to click" option once again that you don't find on the older MacBooks--makes navigation that much faster and easier.

Despite the processor being only 1.6GHz, the speed seems to be about the same as on my MacBook Pro. Here, I'm sure more sophisticated users and gamers will disagree. But I am able to run Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu videos flawlessly. No discernible lag, no annoying pixelating. It certainly boots up faster (that solid state storage makes a noticeable difference there) and many of my usual websites seem to load up just as fast if not faster than they do on my Pro. So I'm not sure I will notice any difference in CPU speed, given my rather mundane needs and uses. But I'm glad I got the faster chip and larger RAM, nonetheless, given the ever-increasing demands of programs and the Internet. These upgrades make normal usage a breeze and should extend the machine's viability a bit longer.

Downsides? None yet--apart from minor issues like the lack of an SD slot, an Ethernet port (USB extension is available for purchase) and additional USB outlets. But I'm happy to sacrifice these things for the convenience of a light, ultrathin MacBook. No doubt this machine will now become my primary tool.

Be aware that this maxed out edition (1.6/4GB/128Flash) must be factory installed through special order. As a result, it takes longer to arrive than most might expect. Certainly longer than the 1-3 business days Apple claims it takes to process the order. Mine took 18 days from the time I placed the order until it arrived from the Apple factory in China. Your experience may be different. But don't expect it to arrive within just a few days.

In short, this is an excellent machine. Whether it is worth the price is up to you. But I'm more than happy with it. Obviously, I can't attest yet to its durability, but it feels solid and stout, and I expect it will get quite a bit of use.

I have a core i7 main 15" MBP and I wanted a travel laptop. I figured for big trips I would need the big boy to take the load. I was wrong. I bought the pimped out 11" model and it has handled admirably. I would like a 256 model as well but I think I will be able to find a bigger flash drive soon enough. I have been amazed with the ease the 1.6ghz handled everything I threw at it and multitasked like a champ. I would not do any video editing or encoding on this little guy but I don't really do that on the road anyway. I think my 15" MBP will be getting a lot of at home time these days. if you have the money to pay the apple tax you will not be disappointed.

Honest reviews on MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I bought it, I love it. It has a full sized keyboard, a screen with about the same dimensions (in dots, not inches) as my old 13" Macbook, is small, light, and beautiful.

It also, to my surprise, will run World of Warcraft at a respectable frame rate.

10 years ago, I bought a 12" powerbook. It was an amazing laptop. Small, powerful, the perfect travel companion. I used it as a road warrior for years. The full sized screen and reasonable battery life were ideal. I later replaced it with a 13" black macbook. I liked it, but it wasn't the portable wonder that the old powerbook had been. I've tried netbooks, bigger laptops, an ipad, etc, and they all work well, but still left a little something to be desired. Enter the 2010 Macbook Air 11". Wow. It's everything my old powerbook was, but better. Better screen, better keyboard, better battery life, and fast. It's not a replacement for a video render farm, you wouldn't want to run the latest game or lots of virtual systems on it, but for my needs, it's brilliant.

OK, got the DV6-1245 at the end of the year. I ended up getting the REFURB'd unit since I have always had lots of luck. Anyway, the unit arrived fast and in a standard sealed HP box. the unit was factory fresh, not a fingerprint on it! All accessories and docs were included. And like many laptops in the second half of 2009, it included a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows-7. I went to the web, entered the shipping info and then, free of charge, a CD came in the mail in a week. Installed Win-7 using the docs and disk provided and viola'... Windows-7 spcifically built for this laptop was running!

As for the unit, nice. The screen is a big 16-inch one, with their brightviuew technology. Some people describe this as a 'glossy' screen, but the reasons have more to do with color rendition, rather than aesthetics. In fact a color photo displayed ona 'glossy' screen is hands-down a much more vivid picture than anything possible on a Matte finish screen. User preference here, but for my money, I would ONLY buy the new 'glossy' style screen for ANY monitor.

The machine is quiet and fast. Standard Intel T6500 dual core CPU, it runs great. Several similiar models include the AMD TF20 or M300 chips, but I wanted an Intel version. This one is a great balance betwen COST and SPEED. Yes, there are faster CPUs, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Unit comes with a 12-cell battery and is great for long-life. Usually this 12-cell is the battery that you have to buy later, for $125 or so, but this unit COMES WITH IT!!! (Yes, I went out and purchased a 6-cell unit for $50 to make this laptop a bit thinner when needed, and now I have BOTH!)

Webcam? Yes, and they throw in the unique Media Manager which can substitute elements of the video stream in real-time, based on your face. So, I can stream what looks like Abraham Lincoln or a Sock-puppet talking (and following my REAL face expressions) when I am on Skype or similiar!

Comes with standard apps installed.

Worth it! Get it! 'Nuff said!

I'm very happy with this machine. Fast, light, solid build, good-looking, great screen, comfortable back-lit keyboard. About identical in size and weight to a 13-inch Macbook, but with a 14" screen. Screen resolution is 1600 x 900, equivalent to Macbook and a step up from the 1366 x 768 standard on a lot of Windows laptops. (Sony touts its "full HD" 1920 x 1080 displays, but I found it made screen objects just too small. This is a happy medium.) It's quiet: the fan hardly ever comes on, and when it does it's not too loud. Good battery life: 5 to 6 hours easily without even going to the "max" power-saving scheme.

I have no real complaints, only a couple of wishes. More USB ports -it has one 2.0 and one 3.0 (although personally I've never needed more); a Blu-ray drive; a Core i7 option.

I bought this after returning a 15.5" Sony Vaio S-series, which had a flimsy, wobbly screen with the aforementioned "Full HD", an annoying off-center touchpad, and a form factor that was just too big and wide. I'm much happier with the Samsung.

One recommendation: whichever power-management scheme you use, edit it so that the wireless card is set to "Maximum Performance" when unplugged -the default slows wireless to a crawl in order to save a little juice. (If you see Samsung dinged on forums for slow wireless, that's why, and it's an easy adjustment that completely resolves the issue.)

Update 7/9/12: I'm still very happy with it. No changes to my earlier comments. Some people complain about the touchpad, it is very sensitive by default, but I lowered the sensitivity using the control panel and now it rarely misinterprets random thumb or palm touches as taps.

The pictures for this product are for the 15.6" version and are NOT of the 14" version. The 14" version does not have the number pad on the keyboard. The 14" has one USB 3.0 port and one USB 2.0 port on the left side. There are no USB ports on the right side.

Overall I REALLY like this laptop. It is plenty fast, has a higher resolution display than most of its competitors, is very portable, and is well built. I am a big fan of matte laptop displays and Samsung does not disappoint on this device. I find the keyboard on this laptop to be easier to type on than most others I have tried, especially the Asus G51VX I am coming from. Unibody construction would be nice, but given the price point and the hardware this contains I can overlook it. The track pad is very large. If I'm not careful I can hit it with my left wrist while typing. I'm 6'2" and have large wrists though, it may not be an issue for everyone. This isn't a big issue for me since I typically disable the track pad and use a mouse anyways. If you're in the market for a lighter, very portable, but yet powerful laptop: I highly recommend the Series 7 14".

EDIT: Amazon has updated the photos for this product. They are now correct for the 14" version.

After having my Sony Vaio SA2 stolen I was forced into purchasing a new laptop. The things I loved about the Vaio were: dedicated graphics card, battery life, weight, hdmi output, backlit keyboard, screen resolution 1600x900, and appearance.

However there were some things that I didn't like; build, materials, noisy fan, and slow hard drive speed. So sense I had to buy a new laptop I wanted to make sure to address some of the issues I had with the Vaio, but maintain the things that I did like about it as well. Thus I came across the Samsung Series 7 NP700Z3A-S06US Laptop.

This Laptop addressed every single issue I had with the Vaio, its better built(screen is solid not flimsy like it was with the Vaio) has a bigger and faster hard drive(1TB, and 8gb of ssd),more ram(8gb vs 4gb on Vaio) and it maintained all the things I loved about the Vaio(speed, graphics card, backlit keyboard, screen resolution 1600x900, and size) .

The only very small, almost not worth mentioning difference, between the Samsung vs the Sony, was that the Sammy cost $150 dollars more, and it weighs about 1lb over the the Sony. Either way these minimalistic differences didn't stop me from making the switch and not looking back at my Vaio SA2

I also want to reinforce what the previous reviewer said, the picture that Amazon has is for the z5a and not the z3a. That being said if your looking for a well made, good looking, portable power house, BUY THIS LAPTOP!

PROS:

Speed processor(dual core i5 2.5 up to 3.0ghz speed)

Hard drive 1TB and 8gb of SATA(SSD like speed)

Screen 1600x900

Dedicated Graphics Card AMD RADEON HD 6490M

RAM 8GB DDR3

Build Screen Lid is solid, brushed aluminum

HDMI If you like to watch movies, play games, and stream videos on a larger screen this is a must.

Back Lit Keyboard Helps allot in low light situations it became a must for me after experiencing it.

Cons:

Weight Over 4lbs tends to be a little heavy(subjective)

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 7 NP700Z3A-S06US 14-Inch Laptop (Silver)

A little bigger than other ultrabooks, but alot more powerful.

PROS:

supports 8GB RAM, this was lightest laptop that I could find supporting 8GB of RAM

Very fast, CPU is better than most other ultrabooks

nice resolution.. things are small, but not too small

some newer battery technology, supposedly letting it last longer

the backlit keyboard is very nice, and the keyboard layout is easy to type with

CONS:

Only 2 USB, both on left side. The USB3 seems to give me issues, might be my driver.

Battery is NOT removable (as long as the battery-life works as intended, this shouldn't be a problem).

CD-Rom is NOT removable... i really not even need an optical drive

Weight is a little heavy, it's not bad.. but could be a little lighter

NOTE: If you do a clean install of windows, like i did, be sure to get the WIFI drivers from the Intel website (not from Samsung). I spend hours trying to figure out way my WIFI would not stay connected in Windows 7 64. Once I installed Intel's drivers (which claim to be an older version) it worked flawlessly.

For $1K, I'm pretty happy. The only comparable light/powerful laptop that met my RAM requirements was from Sony at about $2K.

I've had my Samsung for two months now so I'm here to tell you about it!

What I like:

Screen is bright enough I usually just leave it at minimum brightness and it is suffice

The backlit keyboard and the spacing on the keyboard as well

Quick start-up

Webcam is decent-not amazing but better than my prior computer

Speakers are great-you get a lot of sound at a relatively low setting

Not too heavy

The screen isn't flimsy, after I got it I had to open my old computer for something and it felt so flimsy compared to the Samsung

The machine loads fast (although for the first week after I got it I would've said differently but after some updates that was fixed)

What I don't like as much:

The vent-it's in the hinges where screen meets machine so it can get hot but more so on the top so as long as you have some heat tolerance and don't go sticking your hand above the vent you'll be fine

It came with Skype installed but it was the 32-bit version so I had to get rid of Skype and download it in the 64-bit version-took about 20 minutes to fix but 2 days to figure out

Things to know:

CD/DVD player is a slot you slide the disc into (I have no negative opinion on that)

1 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 (I would have liked there to be one more, but I can settle for two)

Microphone and headphone are combined into one hole for both

Mouse pad has clickers built into the pad-beware, the clickers only work if you click on the fourth of the mouse pad closest to you

If you think you can't adjust something try googling it, I've learned a lot through doing so-For example the machine comes and it will change screen brightness to compensate the amount of light coming through the light sensor, but you can disable that

Some of the bloat ware like Youcam (similar to photobooth on Mac) can be very useful, others like Mediasuite I have no use for and it may pop-up when working with song files rather than iTunes (which you'll have to download if you want)

Be sure to do updates! Otherwise you'll feel like you got robbed, but it moves swiftly as soon as the updates are on

Overall I have enjoyed this computer so unless I update (if I do I'll post the date I do so) I'd have to say it might be a bit overpriced (I got mine on sale though) but overall I am happy with mine. I would recommend this as a personal computer, if you're mainly doing work I think you'll find a better price that will fit your needs but I'd defiantly recommend this to a person who spends a good bit of time with their machine!

I was wanting to try out the Mac computers and see what all the hype was about. I thought this would be a good little intro computer and though it works I was disappointed with it on the overall. Web pages are slow, there was no iphoto or imovie, very bare bones. The lack of a card reader and not picking up my iphone were also disappointing.

I haven't given up on apple but really prefer the windows at least in comparison to this computer.

I bought this computer about 2 years ago. It suited my needs and I'm quite a Dell fan. I have the full HD version with a 500GB 7200RMP disk.

The screen is bright (not perfectly even, but that is barely noticable) and crisp. The keyboard is a joy to type on (I don't like the chicklet keyboards you find on many notebooks today). I know, the keyboard catches dust and dirt, but if you're careful it is possible to remove a key to remove the dirt particle and refit it without breaking anything. When not under high load, the laptop is very quiet. When stressed, you hear the fan quite loud.

Today I'm considering to add some more memory (2x4GB instead of the 2x2GB I have now) and replacing the hard disk with an SSD.

I had to have the inverter of the screen repaired by DELL (luckily within the warranty period). One of the hinges has a crack in the plastic hull, the inner part is not broken though. Given the fact that I use the laptop every day for about 10hrs, dragging it from my desk to multiple meetings a day, I cannot but reconfirm my trust in the build quality of Dell.

The first laptop had dark spots in the corner of the display. Amazon next day shipped the replacement. Excellent customer support. This laptop runs great out of the box with only a small about of junk software. Mainly ASUS applications showing you some of the cool things you can do. Windows 7 so far has impressed me but be aware you will need to do a large amount of updates. (1 gig or better) The HDMI interface works great for connecting your HDTV to play dvd media and web content. Laptop runs cooler than expected but I still would recommend a good power cooler pad.

This model does not have a blu-ray rom, only the K61IC-X1 does.

This model you get a faster processor but no blu-ray.

Thank you for the person that corrected me on this fact.

I picked this out for our son who wanted something for gaming, with a larger screen than my wife's 15" work laptop but not as bulky as our family 17". He would have preferred a >$2000 gaming rig but given he's in the military, I didn't want to give anyone else itchy fingers, not to mention being in less than optimal conditions. He was doubtful when he received it but came around quickly once he found that it handled WoW easily. In fact, a friend "triple boxed" Wow (running three game concurrently) without any trouble! The keypad layout is much better than the configuration of our 17" and the boot-up time is short and sweet thanks to ASUS for keeping it clean and virtually free of bloatware (yes, I'm looking at you, HP!) All in all, we're very happy with the capabilities and price of this laptop and will be looking to ASUS for our future needs.

I bought a Dell XPS M1530 November 2008 and it was subsequently stolen November of 2009. In my quest to replace my laptop I was stubborn & hesitant at first to stray from Dell having owned 3 laptops previously from them with no issues and nothing but excellent experience. I went shopping at a local Electronics retailer and stumbled upon this machine which is lesser known in the Southern US, however I have now learned they are the 3rd largest seller of laptop computers in the world and have won numerous awards. This machine is FAST it boots up to start menu in a mere 8 seconds flat which is impressive. Although there are faster machines out there, for the price of this one it is well worth it for under $1000. The screen picture is crisp as no other and is LED HD and has one of the best resolutions out there, great for movies and other video media. The internal sound card combined with alltec lansing speakers provide for an excellent sound also for music, etc. ALthough not as fancy to the eye or as gimicky as a Dell XPS this is as compatible as it gets and at a better price. also interesting is the 1yr warranty that protects you even from accidental dropping of the machine. 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, etc.

I bought a notebook from ASUS. The ASUS webpage describes the notebook as having a 2-year parts and labor warranty. The web page of the retailer from whom I bought the notebook describes it as having a 2-year parts and labor warranty. I called the retailer's customer support, and they told me it has a 2-year warranty.

I call ASUS for warranty service and they tell me the laptop has a 1-year warranty. A dozen phone calls over 6 weeks plus two escalations and they still refuse to honor their 2-year warranty, in spite of the proof I have given them.

Do not buy from ASUS, they don't honor their warranty.

It started out as a great laptop. After few months, I started to notice the screen behaving weird. It will flicker randomly when I resume it from sleep. Then I sent it for fixing to Asus service center. They sent it back without fixing anything saying they cant reproduce the problem without even contacting me. Now I have to figure out a way how to reproduce it for them to fix, which is very hard as the screen flicker on randomly. I did lot of research online too about the problem. Just google 'asus k61ic' and google will pop up with 'asus k61ic screen flickering' as one of the most searched terms. So I guess many people are having problem with this laptop model. I had high hopes on Asus service and expected Asus to know by now about this problem and also have a permanent fix for it. I have RMA'd my laptop 2nd time and sent it. I am waiting to see if they can fix it or not.

Lesson Learned: No matter which brand you buy, reliability can vary widely depending on the model of the laptop now i think, buying good car is lot easier than buying a good laptop.

EDIT: ASUS was able to fix the problem and it is working fine after that. I think they replaced my LCD panel. I agree with the other comment the dvd drive is finicky and springs out at unexpected moments funny it doesnt get closed so easily too sometimes its weird.. anyways, apart from that, the splendid utility wont work right, if you login as standard user it needs administrative rights another weird thing. Apart from those few annoyances, if you are persistent with ASUS, I guess they will fix your hardware problems. But its not fun to go thru the ordeal.

No major failures yet but the shortcomings of this model (T530 2359, Win 7, 320GB 7200rpm) are almost too numerous to list. Based on my 15+ years of PC user experience, I find the laptop somewhat missing both in hardware design and in performance. Lenovo's bloatware and customer service are also far from flawless for instance, important limitations of the model and manufacturer's international warranty do not appear even in "small print" but rather require extensive searching in dedicated forums, etc.

I ordered the T530 from Lenovo USA mainly because of the optional HD matte display (1600x900 or full HD). If that is not a must, you would probably find a better deal from brands like ASUS or at least another series by Lenovo.

N.B.For all practical purposes the optional discrete graphics card in T530 is useless.

first i want to be very clear...i am reviewing the machine not the operating system. sooooo many problems with these machines have to do with the o.s. and have nothing to do with the machine.

when i get a machine, i take out the h.d. and put in my own with linux. maybe i'll dual boot with windows but thats rare.

i have owned the old ibm t-pads and the lenovos and i think they are great machines and this one is no exception. for such an outdated cpu (t7300), its very snappy and does the normal surfy, streamy things just dandy.

i put a solid state h.d. in mine and i recommend them for a little more speed.

excellent keyboard and decent display and right now the cpu cores are running at...35c and 39c and the fan isn't even running. thats nice and cool.

there was a problem with the hinges loosening on these, but i took mine apart and checked them. they were tight but there is that typical slight wobble that you get with older machines (and most new ones). they will be fine.these things are built like tanks. if you saw the insides of one you would understand.

i dont really know what else to say. every port and plug is fine and the machine always works.

i wrote this because these old machines are great for extra machines or beginner (kids) machines and i thought some input would help.

why get a cheap netbook when these are so much better and cheaper?

i hope i helped.

I love the T61. It is bullet-proof and everything was good about this unit except the battery life. Only an hour and a half, so I bought a new 9-cell for $26. Now it is as good as new. The seller makes sure the screen and unit are in perfect condition. I'm willing to pay a little extra for that.

I bought a top-of-the-line version of this for my son for med but it turned out to be completely unreliable. And 9 of the 10 others in his class who had Lenovo's had the exact same experience. Only 1 was satisfied. What's worse, when we had a disagreement with Lenovo over whether we should pay for a repair that did not fix the problem, the head of Lenovo's customer service department told me -and this is an exact quote -"I don't care what's good for the customer, I care what's good for Lenovo. This laptop arrived with a quirky mousepad. It seemed to click on its own making it almost impossible to type without the cursor jumping around. I used the fn9 for a few days and then it stopped working. My nice new computer is now on its way to California for repairs. Possibly the most disturbing thing is that, after spending so much money on a laptop, when I called ASUS tech services, they suggested that I let them tell me how to permenantly disable the mousepad. I would think they had enough pride in their products to want to make a new computer work correctly rather than cut off the broken stuff. So far, I'm not real impressed with ASUS.

I picked up the i7 version with 6GB RAM and a 555m in it and lemme tell you, I am blown away with what I got for the price.

There is a nifty GPU on off switch and this thing is a full on desktop replacement.

If you part this out at Apple, HP or Dell you are looking at a $1,200 machine; this thing is a STEAL at $800!

I am an IT professional and a hardcore gamer and this machine does all I could ask.

If you don't know what the next bunch of stuff means, it means the computer is very good.

Ok, now that the noobs are fed here are your benchmarks fellow nerds.

These are after a format and defrag to remove bloatware.

14,000 3D Mark06

Skyrim High 42-55 FPS

Battlefield 3 High 35-49 FPS

Starcraft 2 Maxed 55-60 FPS

League Of Legends Maxed 60 FPS

WoW Maxed 60 FPS

Diablo 3 Beta Maxed 60 FPS

The GPU toggle switch on the front right hand side saves much battery and the i7 integrated chip is surprisingly robust.

It Lights up when the 555m is on and you turn it off likewise.

Touch-pad is capacitive and responsive.

Power cord is like a foot and half too short for my taste but that's just being picky.

It can handle SC2/Diablo 3/League/WoW very well on Medium on just the integrated chip.

The Lenovo Ideapad Y570 is a successful line of high end, low cost laptops aimed towards those who want everything they can get in the laptop package for a reasonable price. And Lenovo has no problem with delivering just that.

Pros:

1. The glossy screen I'm probably one of the only people who prefers "glossy" screens to "matte" screens. Glossy screens are susceptible to glare and what not, but they look infinitely better than matte which is designed to not reflect glare. This is really a personal preference, though.

2. The 1GB of graphics is fantastic. Even though I have had a few stutters on Portal, it runs nearly seamlessly. I doubt that this computer could run something as graphically intense as Battlefield 3, but it's good for those who occasionally use their laptops for gaming.

3. The speakers are exactly what I was looking for. They're loud and can fill a whole room with noise. Of all the laptops I've heard, this laptop and the HP DV6 series have the best exterior speakers.

4. The processor on this thing makes it fly. It basically allows you to do any tasks you could hope for at a very large speed. Even web browsing shows a large increase in speed over my past laptops (which did not have i7 processors).

5. The touchpad is something that you might have to get used to if you generally use smooth touchpads, but once you do get used to it, you'll love it. I don't think I would buy a laptop with a smooth touchpad again. There's even a convenient scrolling line on the right side of it that is not present on most other laptops (ASUS, HP, etc).

6. The design is something that I've come to love. At first I thought the screen seemed a bit flimsy, but over the last few days I've convinced myself it's definitely sturdy. Even though the backing of the screen is plastic, it feels the most high quality out of all of the other plastic backings I've seen on other laptops. Also, the brushed aluminum on the inside is just amazing to look at and feel.

7. The capacitive buttons on the top part of the inside of the laptop work very well and are something that I really love. These buttons include volume up, down, mute, a button that controls the fan, and a button that controls the quality of your screen depending on what you're viewing (Normal, Movie, and Intelligent).

8. There's also a backup key, but I'm not really sure what it does yet. I know it has something to do with backing up your computer, but this is something I haven't had time to explore yet.

9. Bloatware Yes. I'm praising the bloatware. Even though most of it is unnecessary, it's better than any of the bloatware I've seen on other laptops and, I dare say, some of it is quite useful.

10. And last, but certainly not least, is the keyboard. If you type a lot, you HAVE to buy a Lenovo. I've never typed on a keyboard as spacious and well suited for my fingers. For a full keyboard, there is tons of room. Apparently they've won many awards for their keyboards, which doesn't surprise me at all.

Nitpicks (not cons):

1. At first there was a slight problem where, after using the keyboard, when I touched the touchpad it wouldn't respond for a second. I Googled this and this is a feature that is being added to most new laptops (even by other brands) that is added to prevent you from making touchpad errors while typing. I, personally, found this annoying, but luckily you're able to easily change this in the touchpad settings. So this nitpick has been taken care of.

2. The battery life could be longer, I suppose. I'd say it lasts five hours without the Nvidia graphics running. If this is fine with you (it is for me), then it shouldn't be a problem.

3. This one is probably specifically for me and you more than likely won't have to worry about having the same thing happen to you: when I received the laptop I noticed after about an hour of use that I have one extremely tiny stuck pixel. I tried a few ways to fix this but nothing has worked yet. It's already gotten to the point where I really don't even care about it (it's in the lower right corner of the screen and is only visible on dark colors such a dark blue, black, and brown). I'll probably continue trying to fix it, but it's something I honestly don't care about. But you shouldn't worry about this happening to you and it's not on the fault of Amazon. It was almost certainly a manufacturing flaw, and a very small one at that.

In conclusion, if you want a nice laptop at a good price that can do mostly everything, this is a great choice for you.

Honest reviews on Lenovo Ideapad Y570 08623TU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dusk Black)

As you might or might not know, Lenovo is made by IBM, and it also received a top five reliability for 2011. I figured those two together made a winning combo (at least compared to Dell). The computer operated great for a couple months, and then the usb 3.0 firmware would randomly uninstall itself. I battled with it for hours on end, updating and trying to resolve this issue. I worked with customer service (total joke) who ended up just telling me to send it in after I listed all the steps I took to resolve the issue. Not really happy with having a model that should've had enough time on the market to work the bugs out, and having to send it off for motherboard issues after only a few months.

For the record, I'm back to Dell as my next laptop just based off of their customer service.
