I wanted a 14" because 13 was too small and 15 was too big. This laptop fits nicely right in the middle. The screen is bright and clear. The keyboard is back lit, easy to see and has nice tactile feel. Surrounding the keyboard is a non-slip rubber type surface that is comfortable to rest your palms on. The large touch pad in the middle is adequate, although I prefer a mouse. Battery life is enough for me, more than enough for an evening's work. Out of the box the amount of installed software is minimal. I uninstalled a few things and the system seems to run clean enough. The outside aluminum skin looks and feels nice. The bottom is well insulated and my legs do not get hot even after hours of use.

My only complaint is the weight. If you really want something light this might not be the one you want. I really don't travel with it so the weight is good enough, just not feather light like some of the other ones I looked at.

Amazon appears to be the only place that has user reviews for the envy 14 WITHOUT the 1600x 900 radiance display, which is no long available. I searched and read every blog talking about this before I bought, here's the bottom line. I was so hesitant and hemmed and hawed about buying this after reading all the blogswhy? Because I'm like a lot of buyers out there, it really bugs me to get something new without having the best of everything installed on it, especially when it comes to computers because of the rapidness in which your brand new technology becomes 2nd best, and then nearly obsolete. The blogs were filled with people who got the radiance screen bragging profusely and potential buyers refusing to pull the trigger on this laptop unless the radiance display comes back...mixed with all the technical jargon about 1366x768 vs 1600x900 for this or that application, etc etc.

I bought it anyway, why? It truly is the perfect size for the perfect balance between portability and performance. Amazon had an awesome price of less than 1000 bucks for not the lowest speed processor or smallest hard drive, a very nice build of 640 gb, 7200 rpm drive and the 3rd fastest available core i5. It also just plain looks sexy compared to any other windows based laptop being produced! It truly is a strong competitor for the MacBook pro, being made to look like it, but just different enough with some extra flair to set it apart.

Now the displayit is sad that HP lost the radiance display, that display is what in my opinion would have made the envy 14 laptop the absolute best laptop produced in 2010, and would have outdone the 15 inch and higher MacBook pro in every single category. As it stands now, I believe it outdoes the 13 inch MacBook pro, and for 300 bucks less! As far as windows based laptops in the same size and class, like I said, it's the best balance of price, performance, and portability, and best looking. The 1366x 768 edge to edge glass display is still nice, it honestly isiTunes movies at 720p look great, text is crystal clear, colors are brilliant, honestly, even if you are a power user, I don't see why you would be disappointed with the quality of the display, and remember the radeon 5650 card can do anything you need it to do more than what the laptop display provides when you hook it up to an HDTV or external LCD HD monitor. So, be angry at hp if you must, and refuse to buy this laptop without the better display, but if you can get over it, you will not be disappointed with this laptop if you do buy it...

For background: I get a new laptop every 6 months or so aand have owned over 20+ so I understand what is normal and what is not.

This Envy is fabulous in terms of speed, heat management and fan noise is low relative to other HP laptops. However still higher than Sony, Dell and Asus, but not too bothersome.

Video card handles StarCraft 2 perfectly and is ATI 5650 is right up there with Nvidia GTS 360M, will handle upcoming call of duty black ops just fine.

You are here because you know all the good part, now Ill get to the bad.

Trackpad:

-Very jumpy, even moving your palm near it while typing cause cursor to jump all over, i nearly lost half of my note in class due to this.

-Poor construction, google HP ENVY 14 TRACKPAD NOISE, OR TRACKPAD PROBLEM, you will find pages and pages and pages of people (i'm one of them) with trackpad making loose clicky noises, or stuck or make loud clunky noises while being pressed upon. A comparable feeling would be driving a brand new Lexus with a loose and vibrating steering wheel. There's no way to self repair, you have to RMA or send it in for repair. As for software for the trackpad, there is an update that helps some but 2 finger scroll and the jumpiness still very much apparent. This trackpad cost it 2 stars and me to RMA the laptop.

-Wirless ON, display dimmed to lowest, no flash web site, only MS word taking note and stuff, power saving mode, real life battery under this condition is approximate 4 hours. U can squeeze 30 more probably with wireless Off.

PS: I have done extensive research online and went to see actual demo in store, trackpad degraded the experience of this laptop exponentially, otherwise if you will only be using a wireless mouse with it, this is a marvelous computer.

UPDATE as of November 13, 2010. Kudo's to Amazon, I returned the Envy 14 with defective trackpad, and received FULL refund plus shipping and got a replacement ENVY 14. Trackpad is a NONE issue now. Clicking is gone, while it's still a bit jumpy, but I just went to the synaptic trackpad setting and lowered the sensitiveness slightly and now it's perfect. Fan noise still low, display is gorgeous and all game can be played at max level e.g. Starcraft 2 and Black Ops. By the way, as a pleasant surprise, I just found out All ENVY series laptop are covered under 2 years warranty! This is the best laptop I have EVER owned, don't hesitate to buy it!

UPDATE as of January 8, 2011. After a software update for trackpad from HP last month, the trackpad works fabulously. 2 finger scroll and all other functions work as advertised. The laptop continue to provide 4 hours of battery life with power saver mode, screen dimmed to lowest,video card turned off and wireless ON, with a few office program running. This continue to deliver highest detail with no lag on Starcraft 2. I updated to the latest ATI Catalyst from AMD web site with no problem. Still runs quiet and cool. By quiet I mean I can sleep with it on overnight 1 foot beside me. BUY IT!

Finally upgraded from my 4 year old Dell inspiron e1505 and I will never look back. Easily the highest quality laptop I have ever owned. Was able to get an i7 core processor with 6 gbs of memory and 500gb 7200 RPM harddrive for under $1000 with a coupon (watch gotapex.com, they pop up rarely).

pros:

-beautiful! The laser etched aluminum frame and cover are unique and gorgeous. Yes it is vaguely reminiscent of the macbook but they really did make it unique.

-heat management. I am aware the the envy 13 and 17 series had overheating issues but mine (even with the i7 core) runs nice and cool. The fan never even has to kick it into high gear.

-excellent backlit keyboard. The nicest feeilng and most responsive keyboard I've used on a PC. Period.

-weight/size. My last laptop was 15.6 inches which was nice but very inconvenient. Myw ife's 13" macbook seemed just a bit too small. The Envy 14 (which is really 14.5inches) filled the gap idealy. Also manages to keep the weight off and be only 1.1" thick.

-mouse pad. You will read a LOT of negative reviews about this but I am very pleased with it. Note that there have been several driver updates since the initial reviews. I am absolutely thrilled with it.

-slot loading drive. Looks classy.

-beats audio. You should know beats audio does NOT mean that the laptop has special or unique speakers. It doesn't. Beats is a software driven optimization which provides clear, interference-free, crisp audio via the audio out ports. Makes a distinct difference when listening via external speakers or headphones. Can toggle on and off to hear the difference, definitely enjoyable.

-speed. I opted for the 1.6Ghz four core i7 processor and this computer is BLAZING FAST. Even if you don't play games the responsiveness of the operating system is truely remarkable.

-screen brightness/quality. The 1080p radiance display remains unavailable when I purchased this laptop. I have the lower resolution birghtview display (720p) which has it's plusses and minuses. The picture is VERY bright and crisp. Has much more liveliness when compared to my Dell. It WOULD be nice to have a slightly higher resolution but this in no way significantly detracts from the overall experience. Even if the radiance display was available I would not have spent the extra $200-300 to upgrade. Part of the appeal of the laptop is that it can be had for under $1000.

UPDATE: was on phone with customer service and inquired about the radiance display. HP says it is PERMANENTLY

discontinued from the HP envy 14 line.

-useful software/minimal bloatware: I only had to remove the Bing toolbar and that ended my bloatware removal. Also it comes with Adobe photoshop elements (which I had just bought seperately!) and adobe premier. Very usefull tools to apply that processing power!

-Build quality. This laptop is one of the only laptops in the sub-$1000 range with a metal frame. It is SOLID.

-comes with a TWO year warranty rather than the standard one year with other HP products

cons:

-battery life. I will admit that my poor battery life is mostly my fault for getting the i7. You should know that even though the graphics processor can be turned off (to switch to the integrated graphics) this feature is unavailable on the i7. Therefor I get to enjoy full processing power all the time, at the expense of battery life. I would say that using everything (bluetooth, wireless, full brightness, ect) I can get 2-2.5 hours of use out of it. I chose this because it is VERY rare that I use my laptop away from an outlet. I have a netbook for that purpose.

To sum things up I am happier with my envy than I have been witha ny computer before it. If you decide to buy you will not regret it.

UPDATE: Six months later I'm still extremely pleased with the laptop. I would happily purchase it again in a heartbeat!

I received this laptop about a week ago, and I certainly have not regretted the decision. I was looking for something larger than 11", but smaller than 15", and solidly built. Battery life was certainly a consideration as well. Fortunately, I was able take a look at several laptops in person at our local MicroCenter, and take them for a test drive. Initially, the price of the Envy steered me clear when I first looked at it, as you can get comparable specs for 200 or more less.

However, after much consideration, I went back to the Envy -especially so after this 14" model was released with revised specs. Now, onto the meat and potatoes:

Pros: Bright Screen, excellent keyboard, backlit keyboard, decent switchable graphics, excellent battery life (about 4 hours), not much bloatware (easily uninstalled), LED's for various functions are not super bright, slot-loading DVD drive, solid construction, attention to small details compared to other laptops, and most importantly, my wife is a big fan.

Cons: The touchpad. I don't hate it, but it does take a bit of getting used to. A bit heavy for a 14" laptop. A tad expensive. I wish the screen could tilt a bit more back. The ethernet adapter "disappears" from device manager, until you plug a cable in -could be just a power-related setting though.

All in all, I feel this laptop fits our needs very well, and unlike the competition, has current hardware and a bit of muscle under the hood. For those of you interested, the Windows 7 Scores are as follows for the high performance GPU:

-Processor: 6.9

-Memory: 5.9

-Graphics: 6.7

-Gaming Graphics: 6.7

-Hard Drive: 5.9 (Highest a standard hard drive will go -need a SSD to increase this score)

When I received this laptop the right speaker was not working. Can't believe HP has no quality control over their Flagship product Envy 14. But Full marks to Amazon. I just picked the phone told the Amazon rep on the phone about the issue and with in a couple of minutes they shipped another laptop which reached me Next Day. HATS OFF to Amazon customer service. I am very happy to see Amazon stepping and taking measures to keep their customers happy. HP please learn some thing!!!

About HP Envy 14, really liked the build quality, though there is still a little flex on the back of screen but much better then any other laptop ( except Mackbook) Touch pad has its own learning curve. I really think they could have kept the old touch pad. But then its large too which is a step in right direction. Key board is best in its class. Love to type on it. Screen is ok compared to other Pcs but no way close to radiance display or Macbooks display. Gives around 3.5 hrs battery life with wifi on and normal surfing. Stays cool ( have not tried Gaming Yet. Another complaint to HP about graphics card. Clocking it down DOES NOT HELP MUCH. Hope they can fix this with next upgrade of this product. All and All I really liked the Product, Its fast, shut down and boot time are also less ( comparative to other Pcs.) Tip :do minimal recovery to remove all bloat ware and then see how zipping fast this machine could get.

Cheap Sony VAIO E Series SVE14116FXW 14-Inch Laptop (Seafoam White)

I was kind of nervous about buying a laptop online, but I researched the model I was considering and went into Best Buy to check it out in person. I LOVE this laptop. It's very fast & smooth and fortunately I haven't had any issues with the keyboard as the previous reviewer mentioned. I love how the keys light up and you can set the backlighting to always on, only when plugged in or always off. It comes preloaded with some great Sony software that you can choose to keep or remove. I removed some of it, but kept most of the Imagination Suite, which includes Sony ACID & Vegas. It has very nice features, light weight and has really good battery life. After charging it in the morning I can go almost all day without needing to recharge it. This is doing regular tasks on it like browsing the internet, checking email, watching videos on YouTube, etc. Overall I am loving this laptop and very happy with my purchase. If you have any questions leave it in the comments below and I will try to answer your question. I hgihly recommend this laptop! If you were on the fence about getting it, I say GET IT!

With almost 750GB of space, there is plenty of room to store an entire music collection, photos, videos and documents.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found this laptop to be light, responsive to commands, fast, with a good display. Typing and launching applications is quick. Even while using processor-heavy applications like Handbrake doesn't seem to slow other functions down much. I had to play with the settings of the trackpad to make it work the way I am used to, but now it is responsive and easy to use.

The drawback is the keyboard, which feels a bit cheap and flimsy. I don't like its "bounce" and feedback, though after a week's use, I am getting used to it. The lighting of the keyboard also doesn't actually help in darker environments.

Sony includes some useful applications, like Vegas Movie Studio, but like many PCs, much of what is included can be removed.

Still, for the size, weight and specs I feel like I've made a good purchase.

First this laptop was purchased for my spouse not me, so I will skip the review on the color. She likes it and that's that. ;)

Now, on to business. Sony VAIO systems have had their ups and downs over the years. However, I can mostly say that Sony has come back with its new line of laptops. They seem to be built better and don't contain as much bloatware as they used it. Why computer companies still insist of packing every piece of horrible software onto their system is beyond me (yes, it could lower the price a bit, but then customers are bombarded with horrible software and blame you for installing it on their system). Anyway, I digress...

What Sony did install on this system that is fairly helpful for the average user, is a "smart" suite that basically checks the system for you and ensures you are running the latest and greatest software and have the right patches to keep your system safe. This suite isn't perfect, however it will at least keep the system cleaner than most suites I've seen from other companies that simply just try to sell you more of their products right from your own desktop (really, commercials on my computer...no, thanks). Additionally, this suite is a teaching tool. Sony takes the time to answer the hottest questions currently floating around the web pertaining to laptops. Need to learn how to hook up that new printer you just purchased to your network or laptop for use? Sony will tell you. Need to figure out if upgrading your laptop to Windows 8 is possible? Sony has you covered (it is btw). Want to know how to fix that annoying little issue that seems to be plaguing you (and likely other Sony customers)? Yep, you guessed it...Sony will post the answer in plain English right on your desktop software suite and even provide you steps to fix it. Not bad Sony, not bad at all.

Now on to the actual system. Let me first give the biggest con of them all. The trackpad is absolutely a nightmare on this system. Seriously I am not able to figure out if I'm clicking or scrolling or simply shaking my mouse pointer back and forth. They decided to incorporate the mouse buttons right into the trackpad, so you don't have separate things to touch but for these burly hands, I am unable to master it. My spouse...no complaints (I think she secretly hates it, but doesn't want to agree with me...*sigh*). If you like those "one surface does it all" type track/touchpads, then this will not bother you and you can ignore the previous portion of this review. The rest of the system is fairly nicely laid out. Keyboard is the newer "chiclet keyboard", which basically means each key is independent on the board instead of a single large mesh for food and other junk to fall into. I like that idea and believe it should become standard on all laptops. The keys, themselves, light up when used, so great for surfing in a dark room during movie night. Most of the function keys are nicely labeled, so you can figure out what two keys you have to hit to replicate the same feature that a normal 108+ keyboard has. Want to page up/down? FN+up-arrow/down-arrow takes care of you (I dislike not having dedicated page-up/down keys, but understand the use due to limited space). The ports (USB, HDMI, card reader, etc) are all nicely placed and easily accessible without looking cheap. There is a powered USB port on one side of the laptop to allow you to charge your USB device, even if you lose the laptop for storage (excellent feature and should be standard, as it is silly that I have to keep a laptop open to charge an iDevice while on the road). The built-in camera and mic work great (Skype tested and approved by family/friends). The powercord and brick are standard and seem solid enough to not cause concern that they'll break within a year (so many manufacturers seem to send crappy powerbricks, so you have to buy their replacement one for $80+ after the original breaks).

So, overall, this system is fairly well built, has a good amount of useful software pre-installed (yes a little bloatware, but nothing worth complaining about), and seems fairly sturdy. If this changes over the next year of use we'll be sure to update this review. As an HP laptop user for work (I know, stop laughing, it is what we have), I can honestly say I am impressed with how Sony turned around and revitalized their consumer line of laptops (their enterprise line was always well-respected and trusted).

I foolishly ignored the reviews about this laptop, blinded by the light up keyboard and intel 5 processor. It IS a lot faster than my old netbook, and I really enjoy the light-up keyboard. However, as other people mentioned, the mouse pad is very annoying and hard to use. Luckily I already had a nice wireless mouse that is connected via a small USB chip. If you are going to buy this, I would suggest buying a mouse as well. I would also recommend getting a warranty, I have recently started having problems with my laptop just randomly shutting off and then not turning back on for awhile. It's very strange. I like it, but I think I probably could have gotten something better for what I paid.

Update: the laptop lasted about 3 months of normal use and then refused to turn on anymore. I sent it in since it was under warranty and it could not be fixed. Luckily Squaretrade gave me my money back. I would not by this product again.

It's an impressive laptop to say the least. It hasn't been the most popular selling laptop as of yet, but it sure does pack some decent hardware. This laptop will replace my old HP laptop. Acer has been dominating the laptop charts lately, and their E1-571-6837 laptop honestly appeared as another great release. So if you're looking for a low priced Acer Aspire laptop, than keep on reading.

At a mere 15.6 inches, this cheap Acer Aspire laptop packs a 1366 by 768 pixel resolution. Great for watching movies in 720p HD. Windows 8 is the default operating system, and it looks stunning on the Aspire's LED display.

The processing unit contains Intel's third generation Core i5 processor, running at 2.6 GHz with turbo boost abilities of up to 3.20 GHz. 4 GB of DDR3 RAM can also be found inside this laptop.

Graphics will be basic — Intel HD Graphics 4000. Just enough to play basic computer games, such as The Sims 3. Higher end games will run, but quite possibly on a lower setting.

Pros

This Aspire laptop can be described as a great desktop replacement system. It has the right amount of speed and build quality that most desktop computers contain. The Intel Core i5 processor does one heck of a great job in my opinion. It runs Adobe Premiere Elements 11, Quick books Premiere 2013, and so much more — without the hassle of lag.

Battery life isn't anything shocking, but it also isn't bad either. On average, the battery will last 3.25 hours while on the internet. That's somewhere around average for a laptop of its caliber.

The whole laptop was designed a glossy black color. It looks great It's very professional looking.

Price-wise it goes up and down, but as i said before and i say it again Amazon has the best prices

Cons

It's a great deal already, but wish Acer would've added more RAM. Currently, it has 4 GB of RAM, however I prefer to be on the safer side with around 6 GB of RAM. This can be upgraded for less than $20.00 yourself and it's extremely easy to install. It requires removing a few screws and inserting the ram into the empty slot.

It took a few minutes to work out windows 8, but once I did I couldn't be happier with this computer. It is so lightweight, the bottom of the computer doesn't get hot, and I love the number pad next to the keyboard. I would recommend this to anyone.

Would be five stars if it came with Windows 7. Now I have to ship it to myself and correct that before giving it to my friend. I needed a laptop with an SSD, but they were all prohibitively expensive. Why do manufacturers charge $250 more for a $90 SSD?

I bought this + a $30 4 gig crucial sodimm and a $100 120GB SSD, Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MX, and a $6 external enclosure. For $600 I ended up with a laptop better than any sub $1000 I was able to find plus a bonus external 500 gig hard drive. Excellent value.

Discount Toshiba Satellite C655-S5123 15.6-Inch Notebook PC

I have owned three Toshiba laptops since I was in high school (I am wayyy out of college now) and never had any real problems with any of them that were not my own fault.

This laptop is no different, after my boyfriend bashed on my other Toshiba satellite we decided to buy a new one instead of paying to repair a 3 yr old laptop.

Compared to his MacBook this one looks pretty much the same. Compared to my last Satellite this one has much much better battery life! About 5 hours per full charge. Did not come with any of the extra junk that usually comes preloaded on a computer.

I think people really need to realize that they are getting a whole computer for under $400! I mean COME ON PEOPLE this is not some MacBook Pro or a $2,000 Sony Vaio or something, geez. If you just want to do some light web browsing and some word documents etc. this one should fit the bill. If you are buying a $400 laptop and expect to be playing online games or something maybe you should be using the word document on your Toshiba to type up a resume and find a better job so you can buy yourself a good "gaming laptop". haha.

This seems to be a good computer for the price. It was the cheapest one I could find for what it offered and, since it was a replacement for a 15-year-old who dropped her last one, I wasn't about to put out a lot of money.

The only thing I don't like about it is that there is a glitch involving when the machine powers itself down. It happened the very first time she had it on. The battery wasn't fully charged when she first turned it on and she didn't notice when it got low. It shut itself down and when she plugged it in and turned it back on the speakers didn't work. Headphones would work but no sound would come out of the speakers. I tried everything. Restarting, reinstalling the driver, Windows system restore. Nothing worked.

I did some research and discovered that this is a problem with not only this model but some of the other Toshibas as well. Once I learned what the problem was and followed the directions given by those who had the problem before me it was a super-easy fix. All you do is turn off the computer, unplug it, remove the battery for 10 minutes, put it all back together and turn it on. When it turns back on it will have reset itself and the speakers will work properly.

I don't understand why this happens but now that I know how to fix it (and how to avoid it) I would still recommend this computer. It is a good computer in all other regards.

When I read the other reviews, I was VERY hesitant to buy this computer, but I did anyway, because I wanted the larger screen size. I am VERY HAPPY with this computer, it's looks and it's performance. I have only had it for 3 months so far, but I know I would know by now if there was a problem. I guess it just comes down to "one man's floor, is another man's ceiling".

Loved by toshiba from September up until a couple days ago when it suddenly died. Both the motherboard and hard drive were fried. I have no idea how, as I mainly use my laptop for surfing and streaming shows on hulu. Very annoyed, not under warranty...grrrrr. So upset, now I am out of a laptop. KEEP AWAY!!! I purchased the Apple MacBook Air MD224LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) to replace my 2011 Macbook Pro 13". I am a lecturer / graduate student, and this is now my main computer.

BUILD QUALITY

It is surprisingly sturdy. Although I plan to purchase a clear case for it (probably from iPearl), I think you could probably get away with using nothing at all. This ruggedness is an amazing feat, considering its light weight. Owners of previous Macbook Airs will enjoy more of the same.

DISPLAY

The Macbook Air has a beautiful display that is quite bright, crisp, and clear. The automatic dimmer function adjusts the brightness level according to the ambient light, and I have found that this works really well. Personally, I think the colors on the Macbook Pro 13" display "popped" a little bit more, and I liked the bezel-less solid piece of glass on it better. However, there is no denying that the resolution on this machine is far superior. I have seen the resolutions on some of the other ultrabooks (Windows), and I think this looks better (the ppi is actually about the same). [EDIT:] The soon-to-be-released Zenbook and others are supposed to have better displays this year, though, so this may change in the future.

KEYBOARD

It is full-sized and typing on it feels good. The backlit keys are great. The keys don't travel enough for my taste, and it feels a little less solid than the Macbook Pro, but this is a minor complaint. I write for a living, and I am looking forward to writing on this!

TRACKPAD

The glass trackpad probably does not get much mention in most reviews, but it is one of the best features of a Macbook, and it sets Apple computers apart from competitors. I retired my mouse a long time ago because of it. If you take the time to master the gestures (see your preferences), and you give full-screen views on applications a try, you can enjoy an incredible experience on this machine. The slightest touch whisks you from screen to screen.

BATTERY

Far too short. Really, 5 hours is not very much, and it looks like I am only getting about that much with regular use on half brightness [EDITED: after testing a couple of times -just short of five hours]. I wish they could have bumped this up an hour or two more, and I will miss the long life on my Macbook Pro. I guess battery life is one of the trade-offs for this form factor.

SPEED

It is lightning fast. To be honest, I cannot tell a difference yet between it and last year's model. They tell me it is faster, though, so I guess I will have to believe them. Perhaps a few months of usage will give me more perspective. At any rate, it is noticeably faster than the Macbook Pro.

ACCESSORIES / STUFF / PORTS

The cord is a good length, and the power brick is quite small. It is somewhere between the size of my iPad power brick and the Macbook Pro power brick. From what I can tell, it looks considerably smaller than the 13" Macbook Air one. I am thinking that I might not mind carrying it around in my man bag with the Macbook Air. The ports on the machine are very conveniently placed, with one USB port on each side. This is so much better than the Macbook Pro, which had all of the ports on the left, where they would inevitably cause problems. Fat thumb-drives sometimes took up so much space I couldn't get another USB cable into the slot next to it. There is no Ethernet port. No Firewire port either. Be forewarned. It doesn't matter to me, but it might to you.

COMPARISONS

64GB

I purchased the 128GB model. With judicious use of cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox, and perhaps the purchase of a 32GB thumb drive to carry around files in case you are not connected, I think 64GB is also doable. One of the great things about this year's 64GB model is that you get the same 4GB of RAM. I consider that model to be the best value, and I would have gotten it if I didn't have a large number of files in one application that, because of the application's design, I cannot put on the cloud.

13" Macbook Air

The base model 13" Macbook air is a better buy if you want the extra battery life and screen size. I value portability over those things (I can carry this in a small man bag, but if I got the 13" I would have to move up to a mail bag or backback).

13" Macbook Pro

The Macbook Pro 13" was an OK computer last year, and before the Macbook Air's Sandy Bridge refresh, was definitely the best entry-level product. However, they did not update the resolution this year, it is rather pokey compared to the Macbook Air, and it is much heavier. Unless you just simply refuse to use the cloud and have an obscene amount of files to carry around every day, I see no point in getting it.

Ultrabooks

As for Windows ultrabooks, I might actually consider them if there was a significant price difference, but most that I have seen are just about the same price as the Macbook Air. They also have inferior build quality (in my opinion) and no support (all of the good stuff you have heard about Apple's phenomenal support is true). I am excited about Windows 8 (sorry Apple fanboys!) and I like where ultrabooks are headed. [EDIT:] It looks like the soon-to-be-released Zenbook will likely be better in terms of specs and price, so if you are wavering between Apple and Windows, you may want to wait a bit longer.

Upgrade from 2011 model

I don't think I would do it if I had the 128GB / 4GB RAM version. The form factor is pretty much the same, and so is the speed. There are some minor improvements like USB 3.0, but otherwise, it probably isn't worth it. If you have the 64GB /2GB RAM version from last year, you could probably benefit from the extra RAM.

SUMMARY

Because of the high resolution display, and the ability to view applications in full-screen mode, I think this computer is portability perfected. It could definitely serve as your main machine, and I think many people will find that it is a better experience than the Pro models from just a year before. If you are a student, this is probably one of the best computers available on the market, and I highly recommend it.

UPDATE June 28, 2013: I continue to love my 2012 11" Air. It's my main computer, super speedy, almost unbelievably thin and light, no problems of any kind.

You probably know that Apple has updated the Airs with much better battery life; the 2013 model of the 11" Air is rated at 9 hours, compared to 5 for the 2010-2012 models. This is huge. If you can afford it, get the 2013 model.

But if you do most of your work plugged in, or have a tight budget, you can now get the 2012 model at a discount. It is still a great computer, and, other than the battery life improvement, the 2013 model is little changed from the 2012 model.

UPDATE Oct 26, 2012: For about four months, my 11" Air has been my main computer. I am just as happy with it now as the day I got it. Battery life has consistently been close to the 5 hours Apple claims, sometimes more. Performance is consistently blazingly fast, and traveling with the Air is a dream (2.4 pounds and super thin instead of 4-6 pounds for a regular laptop). No scratches on the aluminum body or display. No problems of any kind. If my Air was lost or stolen, I would buy the same one again without thinking about it. Here's my original review:

The 11" 2012 Air is a winner in my opinion. It offers absolutely excellent performance and it is amazingly portable despite having a comfortable full-sized keyboard and an excellent display. The design is beautiful and build quality is exceptional.

I ordered my 2012 11" Macbook Air the day it was introduced, received it a few days later, and have used it intensively since. I also own a 13" late 2010 model MB Air, which was my main computer until getting this one.

The 2012 Air's SSD is literally more than twice as fast as the SSDs in the 2010 and 2011 model Airs. The new ivy bridge processors are more than twice as fast as the core 2 duo's in the 2010 Airs and about 20% faster than the sandy bridge processors in the 2011 Air. Compared to my 2010 Air, the 2012 Air flies and makes the 2010 Air seem very sluggish.

The new ivy bridge processors are faster yet less power-hungry than the processors in the 2010 and 2011 Airs, which makes for a small but appreciated improvement in battery life according to independent published benchmarks. I've had my Air for 4 months now, and I'm getting pretty close to the 5-hour battery life that Apple promises, sometimes more. I usually have the screen brightness at 50% and the keyboard backlight down to the lowest setting (but not off).

This is my first computer with USB 3.0 ports. I have been blown away by transfer speeds to my USB 3.0 flash drive and a 2TB external hard drive. (My other USB peripherals are USB 2.0, so I don't notice any difference with them.)

I used bootcamp to install Windows 7 and some Windows-only software I need for work. Booting into Windows and running Windows natively is a noticeably better experience on this new Air than on the Lenovo Windows laptop that I used to have at my job.

For people who don't have an Apple TV and want to play their Air through a home theater system, it's very helpful that the 2012 Air now has HDMI audio pass-through. This means that a single HDMI cable can transmit video and audio from your Air to your home theater system or television set. (Though, you still need the HDMI adapter because the Air still doesn't have its own HDMI port. But the adapter is pretty inexpensive.) The 2010 Air (and maybe the 2011 Air?) could only pass video through the HDMI cable, so you'd need separate audio cables for sound. I have run my new Air through my home theater and watched a few SD and HD programs I downloaded with iTunes, and it worked really great setup was very easy and sound and picture were very good. I really appreciate this because I recently ditched cable and now depend on iTunes, Hulu+, and similar internet services for my TV needs.

If you have a 2010 Air and can afford it, upgrading to a 2012 Air is a no-brainer. The performance is vastly better, plus there are many small but meaningful improvements (backlit keyboard, HDMI audio pass-through, USB 3.0, better Facetime webcam).

If you have a 2011 Air, the case for upgrading is weaker. Compared to the 2011 Airs, the 2012 Airs have fewer improvements and the performance gain is much less dramatic (the main exception being the much faster SSD).

If you're trying to decide between an Air and a 13" Macbook Pro: The Air is way thinner and lighter than the Pro, so it's much nicer to travel with. The Air's display has higher resolution than the Pro's. The Air's SSD blows away the Pro's sluggish 5400 rpm hard drive. On the other hand, the Pro's display has richer colors and wider viewing angles. The Pro has a built-in optical drive; this is important to some people, but many of us rarely use them anymore and cheap external drives work very well with the Air. The Pro's processor is more powerful (though most people will find the 2012 Air's processor to have more than adequate power and speed). A couple months ago, my employer replaced the Lenovo Thinkpad in my office with a new 13" Macbook Pro. My 11" Air is much faster than the Pro. I usually bring my Air to work every day and often don't even turn on the Pro. If you're trying to decide between an Air and a Pro, visit your local retailer and compare them in person. It's really a tradeoff between the Pro's built-in optical drive and rich (but low-res) display and the Air's incredibly thin and light form factor and blazing SSD.

If you're trying to decide between an 11" and 13" Air, the main tradeoff in my opinion is battery life vs. portability. Battery life is rated at 5 hours in the 11" Air, 7 hours in the 13" Air. This is a big difference for people who regularly do a lot of computing away from a power outlet. The difference won't be as important for people who mostly do their computing near a power outlet (I'm in that category). On the three trips I've taken since getting my 11" Air, I've found the 5-hour battery life to be enough for me to get a ton of work done on the flight plus have juice left to watch a pre-downloaded movie or TV episode. And I can't overstate how wonderful it is to travel with such an incredibly thin and light yet powerful computer. Plus, TSA doesn't require you to remove the 11" Air from your laptop bag at airport security (though you ARE required to remove a 13" Air, go figure). But some people really need those extra couple hours of battery life; if you're one of them, get a 13" Air, it's still amazingly thin and light (just not quite as much as the 11" Air).

Another difference between the 11" and 13" Airs is the display, of course. The 13" is not just bigger, it also has higher resolution. For me, this wasn't a factor in my decision because when I'm not traveling, most of the time I plug my Air into an external 22" or 24" monitor, so the built-in display is less important to me than it might be to you. When it's not plugged in to an external monitor, I am perfectly happy with the 11" display (even though I was used to a 13" display on my previous Air). But you might be happier with the 13" display's higher resolution--to be sure, see both models side by side at your local retailer.

Differences between the speed and performance of the 11" and 13" Airs are small enough that most people won't notice them. Even the cheapest 11" Air feels as fast as the 13" Air for most tasks. And both models can be upgraded with more ram, a faster processor, and bigger SSDs at time of purchase.

In fact, if you want any of these upgrades, you should get them at the time of purchase, since most of them cannot be upgraded post-purchase. Here are some recommendations:

There are three things that can be upgraded: SSD, RAM, and processor. SSD in my opinion is most urgent. The processor and RAM in the cheapest model will be adequate for most users, but the 64GB SSD will not. Paying $100 extra to increase the SSD from 64GB to 128GB should be a no-brainer for all but the most liquidity-constrained purchasers. If you can afford it, get the 256GB SSD. If you can afford the 256GB SSD and still have money left, then upgrade to 8GB of RAM.

In the comments, someone noted that the RAM is not user-upgradable post-purchase but the SSD is. This is true. However, upgrading the SSD post-purchase is very expensive, the Air is not designed to be user-serviceable, and opening up your Air may void your warranty. So, for most people, it will be better to buy the Air with the biggest SSD you can afford at the time of purchase.

One thing I don't recommend is AppleCare. Some of you will disagree and I respect your opinions, but here's mine in case it might help you decide:

It's certainly true that AppleCare will save a few people a lot of money. But the average person won't get their 250 dollars worth from AppleCare--otherwise Apple wouldn't make money off it. When I bought my 2010 Air, I let the Apple salesperson talk me into AppleCare, and I haven't used it once. The only good thing about it in my case is that AppleCare transfers to the next owner, and there's over 1 year left on it, so I can use it as a selling point when I put my 2010 Air up for sale.

But I didn't buy AppleCare with my 2012 Air. If there's a defective part, it'll most likely fail during the standard warranty period. If something fails after the standard 1-year warranty, the repair cost would have to be over $250 to make the AppleCare worthwhile. For me, the decision comes down to this: do I want to part with $250 for sure right now, or am I willing to accept a very small risk of losing even more after a year from now?

Of course, some people are particularly risk averse and will appreciate having the peace of mind. And there are some people who really will get their money's worth, and for them, AppleCare is a life-saver. But for most of us, it will end up being a money-loser.

Whether you get AppleCare or not, I strongly recommend the 2012 Macbook Air, and for many of you, the amazing portability of the 11" model will be the better choice.

I am reviewing this item alongside my Retina Macbook Pro, so I will be doing some comparisons.

I bought this laptop to replace a family members aging Asus laptop. She was not a power user, and was convinced she wanted to buy an Apple. I helped her choose the Air, because she really just needs a general use laptop, not a powerful computer.

Qualifications: Senior At Clemson University in Computer Engineering, and would consider myself a power user, but I will be writing this review for the purposes of non-power users, as I do not believe this laptop to be the best option for people that need processing power, but for consumers that want a quality laptop for everyday tasks.

Build Quality: 9/10. The unbelievably thin of 2008 doesn't seem quite so thin anymore. How times change. That said, this laptop is extremely well built, and feels well built, yet very light and compact. I do feel as if you need to be careful with it, just because it is so thin, but that may me just being paranoid.

Power: 6/10. The Ivy Bridge processors give the Macbook Air a nice boost in graphical performance. However, this is not a processing workhorse. If you need a strong processor, go with the Macbook Pro 13". But for every day performance, its perfectly adequate. If you haven't used flash storage before (SSD's), this laptop will likely feel quicker on most everyday tasks than a Quadcore computer just because everything that isn't processor intensive is so zippy.

Battery Life: 8/10. At full brightness, you can get about 3 hours out of it, but can get 5 at low brightness levels. While I complained about this in my Retina Macbook pro, this is excellent for such a small lightweight machine. You can bump up the battery life by jumping to the 13" size, but for the 11" form factor, this is a reasonable amount in my eyes.

Screen: 8/10. The air is still using the TN display and has not yet switched to the IPS system. The advantage of IPS displays is that they have much wider viewing angles. If you tilt the screen all the way back, you will get a washed out screen. That said, as far as TN displays go, this is an excellent one, and is superior to the 13" Macbook Pro's screen. This screen is not a retina screen, and you can definitely tell a difference between the Air and the Ipad3/Retina macbook. However, the screen still is crisp and beautiful for a non-retina screen. I'd say it was somewhere between the ipad2 and iPad3 in screen quality.

Sound: 4/10. Very Tinny at max volume... but its a half inch thick 11" laptop... you don't buy this for sound quality. The Retina Macbook Pro has a much better sound system, but this laptop is less than half the price, and in a much smaller form factor. I gave it a 4/10 for sound, but really sound quality won't factor much into the overall review. The sound quality is fine at lower levels.

Expansion: 3/10. I gave the retina macbook pro a 1/10. However, today OWC released flash storage for the air. You will never be able to upgrade the RAM/Memory, but you will be able to upgrade the storage.

Sexiness Factor: 9/10. Not quite as amazingly sexy as it was in 2008, but still holds its own. Not many laptops are thinner than this one, and I'd argue none besides perhaps Samsung keeps its quality at this thinness.

Overall: 8/10. This is one of those situations where the final device is better than the sum of its parts. Yes the speakers don't handle high volumes, but did you expect them to? There is only so much you can do when you are working inside a case this thin. The power isn't stupendous, but its more than enough for the target users(people that don't want to run Final Cut Pro, but light to moderate photoshop and internet users). The screen isn't retina, but is beautiful none-the-less. This laptop is perfect for general computing users, and will likely last you for several years before you start thinking about another upgrade.

I upgraded from an MC375LL/A mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro to a MC224LL/A mid-2012 11.6" MacBook Air, and the difference is like night and day. My new MBA takes 5 7 seconds from pressing the power button to login screen versus about two minutes with my old MBP. The main hardware differences are: Core i5 vs. Core 2 Duo, 1600MHz vs 1067MHz RAM memory, and (very important) SSD vs. mechanical HDD secondary storage. My new MBA doesn't even feel warm when playing Civilization V whereas my old MBP became very hot within minutes, and the graphics performance is at least twice as fast. As for the ergonomics, the keyboard really is full size, and the display is not noticeably smaller than the 13" MBP, yet the 11.6" display has more pixels. Most importantly to me, my MBA weighs less than half of my old MBP. I really am very happy with this 11.6" MacBook Air.

It's hard (VERY hard) for me to acknowledge that perhaps my decision to drop $2200 on this maxed out 11" Macbook Air would have been money better spent on a 13" Air or Macbook Pro. The truth is that it is an exceptionally well built machine. I love the quality of the screen, the feel of typing on it, the trackpad, the backlit keyboard, how light and thin it is...but part of my wishes that I'd gone for the 13" model. The 13" is only a half-pound heavier, but I think the slightly larger screen would go a long way. This little guy had an exceptionally clear and fantastic screen--the only thing it lacks is the vertical height. The silly thing is that I read reviews prior to purchasing that said the same thing and recommended what I'm going to recommend to you: buy the 13" model. It's pretty much every bit as portable as the 11", only a teensy bit heavier, and you'll thank me for the extra vertical screen viewing area. The 11" just doesn't quite have enough vertical height. It's got plenty from side to side, but vertically it just seems, uh, "short."

That qualm aside, I've installed Windows 8 on it via Bootcamp and it runs fantastically. I actually prefer running Windows 8 on it. Heresy, I know. But yeah, it's FAST, portable, and an all-around exquisite machine. I will admit that I do drool over the new Macbook Air 13" with Retina Display which will be released next week: talk about the ultimate in speed and portable computing!

Anyway, these are simply the best machines out there. I looked at every other option from Dell, Asus, HP, and so on. No one else offered anything as portable, powerful, or well-made, with the same fantastic specs. It's really a shame because, frankly, if there were Windows-based laptops out there equally well-made, I would've preferred to purchase one of them. But, well, if Apple makes the best machine to run Windows on, then a Mac machine it is.

Oh, battery life has been totally sufficient for me. It's not super long but it's long enough for working away from outlets (in classrooms, in meetings, etc.). Anyway, for what it's worth, I really recommend these machines. Apple really knows how to produce exceptional hardware. The operating system is the only aspect of the machine that I don't like as much--but that's why I installed Windows on it!

[UPDATE 12/1/12]

I sold the MBA 11.6". After a while of using it I found the 11.6" size to simply be too small for constant use programming and writing for school, and using Access and Excel for work. I was literally using it up to 8 hours a day intensively, and it was just...too small to be practical. That, and I found myself using Windows 8 most of the time because I just don't like how the Mac OS X multitasks. For me OS X wasn't even as efficient for multitasking as Windows 8 (which is a tad bit less multitasking efficient than Windows 7). But running Windows 8 on a Mac isn't ideal because Apple doesn't care to produce highly optimized drivers to support their users that do run Windows 8. They make it *possible* but not a great experience. Most of the Windows 8 gestures wouldn't work with the Bootcamp 4.0 drivers, and a third-party driver (Trackpad++) was necessary to achieve a tolerable trackpad experience using Windows 8 on the MBA. However, even Trackpad++ wasn't perfect. It had to be constantly updated (every week) which was annoying, and I felt like the trackpad experience was--while better than the Bootcamp drivers--still very much a subpar Windows trackpad experience. The trackpad seemed to be not as responsive as it was in OS X, and less responsive even than the average trackpad on a Windows laptop. There was literally a full second delay between typing and the trackpad accepting input. I'd constantly find myself swiping multiple times because the trackpad hadn't activated yet after I'd been typing. Uber frustrating. In short: Windows 8 on Mac is possible, but less than ideal.

That reality coupled with the small size just not being workable for a full day of work on the MBA, I sold it. Lost a significant chunk of change in the process.

I HIGHLY recommend 1) that you only purchase a Mac if you KNOW you like OS X, 2) that you only purchase an 11.6" MBA as a (much) better netbook/ultraportable experience, and 3) that if you plan to work more than an hour or two a day on your laptop (doing anything) opt for something with a bigger screen: at a minimum 13.3" (either the MacBook Air 13.3" or a Windows laptop with an equivalent screen size).

Bottom-line: It was too small for all-day work, but the screen, keyboard, and trackpad (in OS X) were excellent. If you like OS X, and need something ultra-ultra portable (like netbook size) get the 11.6". If you like OS X and plan to work extensively on the laptop and need something portable, get the 13.3" MacBook Air.

Keep in mind that you're only getting dual-core processors in either MacBook Air... which can prove frustrating if you're really crunching some data through Excel or Access. Two cores, even with hyperthreading, just isn't as capable of dealing with large datasets and operations as a quad-core processor with hyperthreading. I underestimated the performance penalty and found myself frequently waiting for the MBA to finish Excel and Access tasks.

Oh, last note: if you're using Windows 8 on this machine and plugging in an external monitor, expect the fan to run constantly, even loudly. It's more than barely noticeable. In my office environment it was loud enough to find embarrassing--in part because it sounds like the MacBook is struggling so hard. It didn't exhibit this same loud ramping up of the fan when an external monitor was plugged in and OS X was running.

I hope the above information proves useful to you in your buying decision.

The Dell XPS 12 is both a blessing and a bane. It is, on the one hand, a really fine laptop and convenient tablet. The screen is protected when rotated from tablet position into the normal laptop configuration and then closed; this is in contrast to Sony's excellent "slablet" whose screen is always exposed. The "tiles" of Windows 8 are a natural interface for a tablet, and speed with the 3rd gen i5 processor is adequate.

Anyone willing to pay for the admirable features of the XPS 12 should insist on buying one with the 4th generation Haswell chips. A web search shows claims of longer battery life and slightly faster speed. Furthermore, the 128 Solid State Drive seems only marginally adequate and is probably not easy to upgrade. (Amazon sold me a 256 G Crucial SSD which was easy to put into a 2 year old laptop, and that seems to be enough space. It boots up faster than my Android phone, and the XPS 12 is even faster (e.g. less than 10 sec).)

Price aside, my desire is for at least 256 G (or 512 G)SSD with Haswell i5 or i7 and probably 8 gigs of RAM. This is a rare purchase so should be satisfying for years to come. In the best of worlds, Amazon will offer a better choice soon.
