This is a great laptop for the money and I would buy it again.

Pro's:

Light compared to some other laptops (LED vs. LCD screens usually)

Screen is very bright and easy to read

HDMI allows output to HDTV (also for using Media Center on the HDTV)

4GB RAM

Good battery life (it was running for 3.5+ hours the other day)

10-Key number pad

5-1 card reader (for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder)

Con's:

Fingerprints are highly visible on laptop cover -glossy black

Keyboard layout is cramped with certain keys (arrow keys, delete key)

Speakers do not sound as good as my 3 year old Toshiba laptop

No physical button for volume control -it's software controlled via keyboard/Windows.

Addt'l comments:

I also have a Lenovo T61p and the HP is lighter, has better battery life, and a softer keyboard (which I prefer-the Lenovo/Thinkpad line is too stiff for me). The Lenovo performs slightly better in every day tasks (faster hard drive & cpu) and a fair bit faster in graphics intensive applications (e.g. games).

I bought this to replace an older 15.6 inch laptop to be my main home computer. I just could not see investing half or more of the cost of this in a netbook. Boy am I glad I did. The 17.3 inch screen is simply incredible.

These are the ways the 17.3 inch screen helps. First the screen itself is really nice. My photos look fantastic and DVDs look superb. Netflix streaming and Hulu are so-so but that is more the limitations of software than of the screen itself. Many websites take advantage of the larger screen as well and it just feels right. It feels like my work desktop screen. Second and possibly of more value is the keyboard. BY FAR the best laptop keyboard I have ever used. It is even better than my stand alone keyboard at work. Finally a true full size, large key, awesome to type with laptop keyboard. And what I thought was a bad design aesthetically, the large blank space beneath the keyboard with just the mouse controls. Guess what? It is perfect for laying your hands down as you type. I know keyboard is not the first thing that comes to mind when buying a computer and it probably shouldn't be the first thing. BUT it should not be under-rated either.

As for the computer itself. I am really digging Windows 7. I bought this on Black Friday and so far no problems whatsoever. 4 GB is nice. The 6600 processors are nice solid performers. There are better in laptops but for me doing multimedia activities and home office activities this computer more than meets my needs. Everything worked great right out of the box. Webcam works great and not too much installed software. The student and home Office trial means if you end up buying it (Amazon usually has the best price around) it is already installed you just need the key. That was kind of nice. The 60 days of Norton gives you some time to try it, be protected, and make a decision on the security software you like so that is also helpful.

But ultimately what should make you choose this over the numerous other configurations HP offers is the screen size. Any slight added bulkiness and weight (around 6.5 odd pounds) is more than made up for me with how much fun it is to have a large laptop screen and a real full-sized comfortable, fantastic keyboard. Let others have their 10 inch products...17.3 for me from now on.

UPDATE as of 7/4/2010 I have just recently switched over to Mac so anything PC is truly inferior in so many ways. But as Windows laptop, this is a darn good machine for the money.

How can I express how incredible this machine is? Well let me try. Two weeks earlier I bought the Vista cousin of this machine that had a Pentium and only 1400/900 display (blech!) and it was a bit sluggish. After I saw an Office Depot flyer advertising this beauty for with rebate, I returned the Pentium to Best Buy, who didn't have this machine. This machine is a tremendous value. Huge hard drive, 4 gigs of ram, WONDERFUL keyboard (all the HPs have the best-engineered keyboards I have seen on any laptops, large and small). And 1600x900 instead of 1400x900 like some of the other models. I agree that the power cable should be on the left side, in fact on the one I returned it was. And yes, the speakers are underwhelming. But this is no "gaming rig", this is a business desktop replacement, period. Battery life? It says up to 4 hours by I get between 2.5 and 3 hours, and with the powersave mode, just a bit over 3 hours. The lesser cousin didn't even get 1.5 hours.

Do not pass go, do not collect (although you will collect in rebates), just buy this machine!

Honest reviews on HP G71-340US 17.3-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of

I'm a Mac guy normally, but my mother is PC all the way. I got this computer for her as a gift, and spent a few hours setting it up for her. Paid $650 for this before tax at Sam's Club. It's worth it. You get what you pay for. Windows 7 is impressive. I suppose W7 is Microsoft's answer to Mac OSX. They have done a great job at making all of Windows more aesthetically pleasing. It is simple and functional, and seems to run smoothly. Of course, my experience with Windows is that you can't really judge how quick it is for at least 6 months, so who knows. The processor and memory on this computer are a great value for what you pay... kudos on that.

My problem with this computer, first of all, is that it doesn't have built-in Bluetooth... I guess I was thinking that BT was sort-of standard already on notebook computers nowadays. Makes it a little inconvenient for someone like me that prefers to do everything wirelessly. Another issue I have with this notebook is that it is VERY bulky and VERY heavy. I appreciate the large widescreen, and the full numeric keypad, but the moment I opened the box I was deflated by the sheer size of this monstrosity. It is not something that a normal-sized person can comfortably fit on their lap (OMG I could not imagine trying to use this thing on an airplane). It is so large that the first two notebook bags I bought my mother would not accommodate it. The placement of buttons and control keys on the unit itself, for some reason, also seems a little confusing to me... lacking intuitiveness... but that may just be me.

This computer, despite its problems, did impress me overall. It's a cut above the expectations I had for a $650 PC laptop. I am looking to purchase an actual Windows PC to use in addition to my two Macs... I would consider HP based on my experience with this notebook, but I would not consider THIS MODEL. I travel several months out of the year... and honestly this thing is just too bulky and heavy to comfortably carry through airports. I would suggest to seriously consider the size and weight of this computer before purchasing it, and weigh the cons of those things against your intentions for this computer... if you travel a lot with your notebook, I doubt this model will make you happy camper. But if you want a portable home computer, or something to keep in your dorm... something that won't be moving around a lot... this might be a good option.

Impressive, very impressive... but not enough to turn this old Mac guru into a PC-All-The-Way guy. :)

It's better than my G70 but not by much. The 16:9 screen is much shorter than the G70 widescreen, making it harder to read pages online-lots of scrolling. My biggest complaint is the volume. I went into every possible menu to max the vol and nothing helped. The G70 blasts it out of the water on sound. The DVD tray is very flimsy, it wouldn't burn a DVD-I tried several brands and types. It tried-burned maybe half a disc and wasted 10 discs. I was trying to burn their recommended recovery disc set off this notebook. I gave up and paid the $14 for the DVDs. The tray is moulded close to the bottom and hangs if you don't keep it near the edge of your desk or raised on that end. The power adpt cord sticks straight out the rear side and would be easy to mangle if you're not careful moving it. I'm returning it because Win7 won't work with any of my HP printers and scanners and they state on their website that they aren't going to write new drivers. These notebooks are identical in quality and appearance. The G71 is ,1 Ghz faster and 1 GB more memory plus .3 larger screen. Not a huge difference by any means. I did exhaust tech support on the hardware issue and he recommended I buy new printers and scanners. NOT I'll stick with Vista untill they write more drivers, maybe they'll have one of mine in a few ..... For the money it's a good machine but you better have Win7 approved hardware. Most of the drivers out now for Win7 are stripped of their features and use only basic functions. I wouldn't abandon Vista just yet.

As made apparent by the multiple other reviews, this laptop model has inherent issues with the wi-fi card. Toshiba is aware of the problem and continues to ship these laptops without fixing the card. The wi-fi connection will drop continuously. Like another reviewer stated, I also was promised a callback from elevated support. A call I never received. The fact that they are shipping these laptops with foreknowledge of the issue indicates questionable ethical practices by Toshiba. I am sending mine back; I'll find a more reliable and trusted manufacturer to buy a laptop from.

UPDATE: This is a known issue with the Intel Centrino N-2230 Wireless Adapter Toshiba uses and Windows 8. My hunch is they initially built this notebook to run on Windows 7. There are numerous brands and models all experiencing the identical issue. There appears to be a fix. I have been running flawlessly since instituting the fix. It involves rolling back the driver to a previous version. You can find instructions on Intel's forum here:

I am updating my rating to 4 stars. The computer is elegant and super fast. I would give it 5 stars, but I'm not happy with Toshiba's handling of the situation. I should not have to do all this detective work to get to the bottom of the problem, but I'm happy now.

Updated 2 August

ONe of my favorite poets had a clubbed foot, George Gordon, Lord Byron; yet he was able to express his revolutionary ideas, become one of the essential cultural figures of his time, all time. As such this computer needs an alternative solution to WiFi networking. If you Google the installed Intel card, you can read in copious detail the unsolved issues with the card, especially in a complex environment of a home with WiFi phones, printers,PCs, I-Pods, game boxes, Smart TVs. My quick fix of a USB attached WiFi dongle gave me back all the fine qualities of this machine. Now, when I actually find an alternative network + Blu tooth card, I will swap out the one I have disabled. Perhaps Intel will actually respond to the complexity of multiple devices all using the same frequencies the N resides. Live in an apartment complex with a half dozen WiFi networks easily found with a modern pc and manufactures will simply need to do better. Until then, I leave the Intel card to do blu tooth (I haven't gotten my own head phones, mice, keyboards found and paired as yet).

The machine OTHERWISE meets / exceeds all my expectations. Byron and Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7298, flawed, but fabulous.

Original review and additions:

After going through 3 ASUS G750JXs at a local large electronics store all for the same defect of spontaneous shutdown (Critical errors in the Event Log) I decided to shop on-line finding more problem than it was worth to go locally for such a powerful pc.

The Toshiba X75-A7298 arrived yesterday morning and from the beginning it had its problems or as younger people say "issues." Because the WiFi connection would intermittently kick down to "no internet connection limited," I unplugged the cable modem and wifi router, reengaged and rebooted the Qosimo X75-7298 hereafter X75. As the 51 Microsoft Windows 8 updates contained a third install failures; and the Norton 360 Premier had the same partial success in live updates, I decided the easiest course would be a system restore back to the beginning. I learned well this trick from my ASUS experiences.

I also PLUGGED an Ethernet cable in before I ran the updates and software installs. Amazing! No failures or errors (I write this a short distance from my Ethernet / WiFi router. I'm certainly not taking unnecessary risks). Yet whether I would be downloading files, while watching MLB.TV or Amazon Prime I ran into the same problem.

After contacting Toshiba Saturday and not receiving the call back from the second level tech they promised me in Manila, a second call with a reference # confirmed hardware failure.

I like the responsiveness of this computer. It leaves barely a trace of finger prints unlike the ASUS 'gamer' and is lighter and has a Blu Ray disk, SSD and SATA hard drives, and great sound. I just want one that comes out of the box without, with out problems. I will update when I receive my replacement which Amazon informs me is on the way.

One final oddity (my subjectivity showing)is the A/C connector is the old RCA 4 prong male / female variety I know from my old vacuum-tube radio days. It seems very easy to fall out when using this laptop on my lap. Buyer beware!

July 31 Update:

As it turned out the second delivery after all of the Toshiba and Intel updates still has the same issues with error codes 1001 and 1014,defective Intel WiFi card /driver (And of course the Device Manager informed me the card was working and I had the best driver already installed). Would the 3rd try be any different?

No

Not only did this laptop experience the same problems as in the 2 previous (and within the first 5 minutes of video streaming), the 3rd was identical except this copy had error codes 1001 and 1014 in the Event Log not the date I received the new laptop (31 July), but 16 June 2013, a date I believe was prior to retail availability.

Also of note: the plastic coating atop the touch pad was missing. So whether this laptop had been opened by Amazon or Toshiba, it was not "new" on the one hand and had experienced the same network errors a month and a half prior to landing in my lap.

Thus from my initial order of July 19, I've been at this for a dozen days. Add the ASUS G750JX experiences of earlier and the month has been filled with 6 disappointments with Intel's 4th generation of laptop I7s. Should I wait 3 to 6 months and try Wintel again, Apple up, or find a nice large screen Android tablet?

Honest reviews on Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7298 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black Widow Styling in

I quite like this computer, and able to compare it to the last years version of this, the Qosmio x875-Q7390. This computer is lighter, seems more power efficient with the Haswell processor. I continue to like the 17" Qosmio for the following big great display, blu-ray, good sound. At this size I use both laptops by setting them on the bed or on my lap. They do not leave the house that much, which would be troublesome with a laptop this size.

I like bigger because in my mind it is a better experience, rather than to be squinting into a 13" screen. I would rather hassle with carrying a bigger unit around to get the better experience when using it. I love the bright screen, the numerous ports, big speakers. Each person needs to decide portabilty versus experience. I am the type of person who would love to trade my Samsung S3 for the Galazy Note 3, so I like a bigger screen. Both laptops need to be plugged into the wall as battery life is not that great. However I must say that the A7298 has much better battery life. It really appears that the Haswell chip is better. Both computers are fast to start and also shut down quickly. The 7298 is cooler and vents the heat to the side.

Both have Windows 8, which I barely notice because I use the desktop app, which to me looks exactly like Windows 7. This may be a Toshiba app which is included. To me the specs on both are excellent for the price. I looked at other manufacturers for screen size/resolution, blu-ray, graphics card, processor, memory. I continue to be impressed by Toshiba in terms of the clarity of their website and all the features packed into the unit. It appeared very good compared to Dell, HP, ASUS, etc. When I buy a computer I intend to use it for at least 4 years, so do not mind paying a little more. I do not think both computers will be obsolete anytime soon. This computer and its predecessor are great for web surfing, music, movies. I connect both to my TV via HDMI output so I watch YouTube on my TV which is great.

The only issue is I would be careful with Toshiba quality. I have had to return a Q7290 (the predecessor to the Q7390) and my first Q7390 for being completely defective. The Q7290 would not start, and the first Q7390 had a defective graphics card diagnosed by Toshiba support. I also had another Qosmio custom machine, with similar construction specs, have to be returned about 4 months ago for a defective wifi card. The Wifi would keep losing connection with the router. Toshiba support could not fix this. It appears as if a number of others have also had the same problem. I am not a tech person so I do not know where this problem arises, but it appears that resetting the network adapter fixes this temporarily.

My current Q7390 also has this issue sporadically this is fixed by resetting the network adapter, something that takes about 10s. But it is still a hassle, and Toshiba support did not really help me. So basically half the computers I have bought from Toshiba have had some serious problems.

The good news is that at least the A7298 has not had this issue. The bottom line is that this computer has a nice 1080p screen, blu-ray, fast processor and other specs, nice sound, and is light. It is really a wonderful machine that has improved from the 2012 computer line from Toshiba. Incidentally one thing which I really enjoy about both my computers is the fact that the track pad also is a button. This allows me to web surf many times with just one hand. This little thing really makes a difference I especially notice this when I am using a laptop that does not have this. For example if you move to a hyperlink you have to then move your hand to another button; but with this Qosmio pad you can just push it down once the arrow is over the link. This was extremely important to me.

I recommend buying this machine directly from Amazon, and to use it thoroughly in the first month to make sure that there are no problems. I would pay more from AMZN to have the peace of mind that I can return the unit without a hassle if there are problems. I have had only good experience in returning costly electronic items to AMZN, the most customer-friendly retailer I have ever worked with.

Especially make sure that the Wifi works properly. Overall I am happy to own this machine and the Q7390.

I'm replacing my Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV80, I'm giving it to my son for college. I received the computer today and came home early to set it up.We had a large thunderstorm today, so when I was having connection problems blamed it on Comcast having issues due to the storm. After some time my youngest son was watching Dr. Who on Netflix with no problem, The TV feeds off the same router. Now begins the troubleshooting, called Toshiba and we reset, re installed both router and computer. They determined it must be a defective wi-fi card. So, I'm going to return it to Amazon. I will say the computer itself is extremely fast and I may have them send one more out. Yes I read the other review about this same issue, but on the last model wi-fi worked great so I gave it a try.

After having attempted the several ways to potentially indentify the problem, it finally comes down to either the laptop has a symptom similar to the commonly refered "graining screen" by wide experiencers. Though if this system uses deficient screen is my misunderstanding, and the display is normal for the specs it has, I'm sorry I am mispersuading for the quality the manufacturer ought to present. Then the incentive for me to return this laptop would be the lack of display quality of this specific model.

All in one, the spec of this laptop for its price is easily a shimmer in the pool of laptops at the 400$ range, known for their unreliability and the usually expected blockage to better performance due to little investment. The top reason being it is Asus, differentiating itself from the other for its sturdy quality.

I am most concerned that my laptop has thrown thermal sensing errors and warnings about the disk drive. Also, the windows automatic update never completes, but this might be a Windows 7 issues. A friend who purchased the same brand of laptop reported similar errors with the windows updates not completing.

On the plus side, the outer case of the laptop seems sturdy, the keyboard is nice, and the space around the touch pad makes a comfortable place to rest my wrists. I don't seem to have any issues brushing the touch pad by mistake with this laptop (unlike the Dells).

I hastily bought this as a hurry-up necessity when I sent my good laptop in for refurbishment. I figured for the low price, it would be a toy that I'd use only rarely. I find, though, that for a "toy" it performs extremely well. Not the fastest processor in the world but it is serviceable enough, and enough memory for my purposes.

When I streamed a movie last night I was impressed by the decent sound quality, both with earbuds and without. The keyboard action is a little stiff and I understand the rough touchpads on these models tend to deteriorate with light use so I would recommend buying a touchpad skin to protect against wear.

GREAT Laptop! It's quite; fast, great for multitasking and videos. I do not have anything negative except for the hard drive is split in to 2...C& D. However, Do Not Purchase this computer from Circuit City. I had called about the belling to make sure that it was done correctly and the person at the other end of phone was about to rip my head off! Kept telling me that it was not his problem and had no idea to whom he should refer me too. I guess they don't need the business. Stay away from CirCuitCity...

Going from a Vaio FZ series that is going on 6 years AND still going, it was time to score another laptop. The build quality is OUTSTANDING, keyboard though just a wee bit of flex will impress most if not all typists in it's feel and response....graphics are awesome, more than enough power to run anything and everything you may need....if you find this guy at a discount as I did, grab it....I will be using this guy for photography purposes and editing, so I will update....

Cheers!

UPDATE!!!!!!

Been using the laptop for a little over a month now....holy toledo....I'm running 16gb of RAM, 4 slots 4Gigs each....swapped out the stock HDD and installed a seagate momentum xt with the latest bios....SWEET! The HDD it came with is fantastic, I just wanted to run the hybrid drive to see if it is faster, indeed it is! The 16gigs of RAM might seem like overkill, but RAM is super cheap these days and I figured why not?....the only time I maxed out the RAM was when I was scrubbing a HDD it was running 15.2 Gigs, you may notice a nice bit of overhead when watching a movie on a large screen through this thing....lol......the build quality is definetely there,I dropped it a couple of days ago straight down on the front (keyboard side) edge, nothin' took it like a champ, this should last me a good few years....games!!!!!

IT WILL GAME! Running Oblivion 60ish FPS approx, Batman Arkham was I think avg. 34 FPS....hell, I think it will run Crysis!

The only way to upgrade this rig is to throw down an ssd, something I don't have the funds nor compulsion to do.

The upgrades are more for my taste, not from necessity.....this laptop NEEDS NOTHING....I'm just weird.

Cheers!

i bought this laptop not from here but from best buy. best buys model comes with 6gb of ram and for the same price but it is a sleek machine, very hard to get finger prints on it at all. the outside case looks beautiful with its brushed metal look, i was very suprised to see this little laptop can run portal 2 with everything on high with no lag at all, but i have noticed the screen is in lack of color and its not very severe but it will make u notice if you are a videophile like myself lol. the kayboard is nice and very spacious except i had trouble getting used to the fact it has a 10 digit keypad on it to but it isnt that big of a gripe as i got used to it withen a week. and it didnt come with alot of crap-ware on it either. but i think 600$ is a great price for this laptop, oh sorry one more thing the webcam is amazing no lag at all even on skype. but the mic is right in the base of the case by the keyboard so u can easily here a tick tick tick noise on the other persons mic if you are typeing lol.

Be aware that the product seems to have a defect with the left hinge of the screen. There are multiple complaints and it is always the left hinge. other problems are with its cooling fansin less than 1 year of owning it, I had to return it to the service center to be repaired. The laptop would get a fan error and just shut down.

I bought this laptop for just $850 in 2009. Over the last 3+ years, I have taken on trips, meetings, airports, buses and just about everywhere and it still keeps ticking as reliably as ever. I've spilt ice water on it by accident, left it running in the backpack, dropped it a few times onto the floor from the table and couch. Yet, I have never once had a hardware issue, be it faulty screens, touchpad, mic, camera or speakers. I've owned Acers, Dells (ugh), HPs, Compaqs, Macbooks and Toshiba laptops over the last 12 years. This is by far the single best laptop I've owned to date.

The other reviews on the web will complain about this laptop's build quality. That is a fair point, BUT ONLY when comparing it other thinkpads or the macbook. The low price of this laptop means that it does not have the magnesium alloy roll cage and hinges which give Thinkpads their brick like hardness. But when comparing it to any other laptop on the market, the build quality is one cut above. Even with a plastic case, there is no flex on this laptop. You can try to bend it and it won't budge. Even after thousands of openings and closings, the lid hinges snap perfectly shut.

The keyboard is good enough to deserve a review of its own. Many thinkpad users have told me about the awesomeness of a Thinkpad keyboard. I thought it an exagerration until I used this laptop. I am now sold. The Thinkpad Island keyboard is arguably the best laptop keyboard I've ever used and possibly even rivals several desktop keyboards. Unfortunately, Lenovo has recently changed this famous keyboard and replaced it with a chiclet design on newer laptops. While most reviewers don't see this as a problem, Thinkpad diehards still believe that the Island keyboard of old is the best.

There is only one downside with this laptop, as with any Thinkpad. It won't die. After 3+ years, this laptop still looks and works like the day it was bought. The hardware inside has become outdated and while it runs Windows 7 without any issues, I can see it struggling to run future OSes. I have spent about $200 to perform some minor upgrades, by increasing the RAM to 4GB and replacing the hard drive with an SSD. I can see this laptop easily running for another 3 or more years, with occasional formats and OS reinstalls.

Thinkpad diehards will complain about the glossy finish and the recessed ports on this laptop, but both are frankly minor issues, if at all. Highly recommend this laptop or any Thinkpad of a similar size.

I have owned this laptop (SL400) for around 1.5 years. All I can say is the build quality is horrible. I have three main issues with the laptop. The DC port on the laptop is loose and possibly a safety hazard. The LCD left hinge broke, so the LCD was dangling on one hinge (until I fixed it). The keyboard is acting up, some keys I have to press hard to get it to register. I treat my laptops with care and all of my previous laptops never had this many issues after 1.5 years of use. Time to try a different model or maybe even a different brand.

I am a software developer and was looking for a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop on which to do some Windows 8 development. I was additionally looking to replace my Asus UL30VT as my occasional travel laptop. I am an amateur photographer, so I also wanted something with a nice screen that could do at least full HD at 1920 x 1080. This last consideration narrowed the field quite a bit.

After comparing many models and finally ordering and receiving this Sony I can state that I couldn't be happier. This is such a beautiful machine and such an incredible value for the price. While Windows 8 is still growing on me, the machine itself is wonderful. First off, is the screen. Text and photos look gorgeous. There is no substitute for pixel density when rendering text and this machine renders text and web pages beautifully. I loaded up my Nikon photo software to review a number of photos from my D90 and they looked wonderful. I held out for a 1080p screen because I also like to watch movies. I loaded up Windows Media Player Home Cinema edition and threw a 1080p MKV at it, which it rendered wonderfully using only about 20% CPU during the busy action scenes with the Intel video chipset. This had been a point of potential concern for me since there isn't a discrete graphics card in the machine.

The sound is just okay, as is generally the case for a laptop. Certainly acceptable for watching a movie and general use although I wouldn't want to try to rock out to them. I could have done without the DVD drive, but as an old school programmer and PC user I appreciate having it and am creating system recovery DVD's as I write this. The variety of ports is also appreciated. Having a GigE ethernet port was a must for me. The VGA port was also not required, but is darn nice to have. The USB-3 port will come in handy for more rapid backups and perhaps occasional device charging.

The aluminum chassis, shiny chrome strip and backlit keyboard all add touches of class that make this a thing of beauty as well as a workhorse.

I am a student going into college in the fall of 2013 and had been searching for a laptop for a very long time. After months of searching for a laptop that had what I needed AND what I wanted, I finally found the Sony VAIO.

Pros:

-15.5" is a great screen size; big enough to watch movies or play games if you want, yet small enough to be portable.

-Quick turn-on time due to the solid state drive. The laptop boots up within 3 seconds at the most.

-The screen resolution is solid. HD movies look beautiful and small words are relatively easy to read.

-The touch screen is accurate and smooth and makes Windows 8 easier to use

-600 GB of storage space is more than enough for most people

-I love that this laptop comes with an HDMI port. I can hook it up to any TV and the picture is very clear.

-The backlit keyboard is useful for using the laptop in the dark. I'm surprised at how many laptops these days do not have backlit keyboards.

-The number pad on the side of the keyboard is a must-have for a college student like me

-The keyboard is very sensitive, which could be a good or bad thing depending on the person. I like having a sensitive keyboard since I have small hands. Someone with larger hands may find it bothersome.

-The design of the laptop looks sleek and professional.

Cons:

-The touch pad is very loud when you use it to click

-The fan can, at times, be somewhat loud

-The left side of the bottom of the laptop gets very hot, so don't let it sit on your lap without some kind of pad to put it on.

-There is only one USB 3.0 port; I wish there were more.

-The speakers aren't the best, but they are tolerable. I use headphones most of the time anyway.

-I wish the CD/DVD drive could play Blu-rays.

-I don't know how well the battery works or how long it lasts because I have almost always have my laptop plugged in to an outlet.

Even though there are some negative aspects to this laptop, I give the VAIO five stars because I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a computer for both work/school and for entertainment purposes like watching movies and playing some simple games. And for a laptop like this, the price is amazing. I'm overall very pleased with this product.

Although true high resolution display, the monitor has a washed-out display from most angles. Also, wi-fi loses connectivity often, must reconnect.

I did a lot of research into my laptop purchase and eventually chose this one. A decision which I'm already regretting. I run my own business and work a lot from home, or remotely with my clients. I needed something that was portable, but powerful, and a desktop equivalent in many senses. What I got was a laptop that crashed after 5 weeks and entered a perpetual loop of saying it had encountered an error and needed to restart... restarting, and saying the exact same thing again, so that I could never get it to start up. I took it back to the retailer who said it needed a completely new hard drive and everything on the current hard drive would be lost. Luckily I sought a second opinion at a Sony Store, who ran a system reboot and got it up and running again. Thank goodness. But it continues to shut itself down for no reason at least once a week, has problems starting, and generally just makes me feel nervous that it's going to crash at any point.

But by FAR The most annoying thing about this laptop that makes me want to return it every single day, is that it won't hold a WiFi connection. 50% of the time it connects automatically when I log on, the other 50% it doesn't and I have to try and do it manually. But even when it does connect, this often lasts about 10 minutes before it automatically disconnects for no reason (and still says its connected...although I can't open a webpage or send an email). I have to either reboot, or put it into airplane mode then back to normal to restart the WiFi connection. In a normal working day, I probably have to do one of those 2 things at least 20 30 times. It's beyond annoying and wastes about 40 minutes of every day just trying to fix the connection. It drives me mad.

If I had realised within my 30 day return period, I would have got a full refund and bought a completely different laptop. I feel like I'm stuck with this one, and every time I take it in to get these problems looked at they update the software and say it should be fixed. It never is. In my opinion this is a massive fault with the machine, and having Googled it more since my purchase, it seems it's not an uncommon one either.

I had a very basic Toshiba notebook for 4 years prior to this Sony, and didn't have a single problem with it. Very disappointing.

I have this laptop, which was provided for my use, at work. I am a hospice nurse, who performs numerous home visits daily. This laptop is the perfect size, and weight. The keyboard is perfect. We recently switched from using the toughbook to a Samsung galaxy tablet. I HATE THE TABLET!!!! Personally, I prefer having a keyboard for typing. Pecking on a tablet is tiresome, bothersome, and tedious. Sadly, this is the direction we are all headed in, due to the fast growing technology field. However, I see it as a downfall. My documentation is not as good on the tablet, because I cannot "peck" as fast as I can type. Because I loved this laptop so much at work, I am looking to buy one for personal use. I would recommend purchasing the toughbook to anyone who is considering purchasing. You won't be disappointed.....

This laptop is everything you'd expect from a high-end gaming laptop. From inside to outside, all features and components have been designed for top notch gaming performance.

This particular model utilizes Intel's latest CPUthe 4th generation i7 8 Core processor which packs more processing potential than most users will ever need.

This model is loaded with 16 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM and is upgradable to 32 gigabytes. This is more RAM than most games will recommend for system requirements.

The GPU is Nvidia's latest mobile modelthe GeForce GTX 770m. Packing 3 gigabytes of super fast GDDR5 dedicated VRAM this bad boy will push high frame rate benchmarks even under high graphical settings. Some games will drop significantly in frame rates under super max video settings due to poor game run engines but I have never been happier with graphics performance since purchasing this laptop. This system also comes equipped with a super cooling feature at the push of a button. The fan system will kick into high gear and DROP temperatures of the CPU and GPU to extremely admirable levels making this laptop very versatile. This mobile GPU is second only to the GeForce GTX 780m which is Nvidia's top GPU model.

Three USB 3.0 slots. Two USB 2.0. Top of the line networking adapters for WiFi, LAN etc... The keyboard is the new SteelSeries with a customizable backlit keyboard that may be adjusted at the touch of a button. I have to stress how comfortable and responsive this keyboard is. I have never type so fast on another keyboard. The keyboard on this laptop is truly a wonder in and of itself.

The sound system is remarkable. Three speakersleft, right and bottom. Crisp and clear sound. No crackling or muffling. Even has some bass to it. The sound system is the best you can get for laptops. You won't be disappointed.

THE ONE FLAW...

This particular model comes with only a 7200RPM HDD. It has an open bay to add a solid state drive which will greatly increase performance when and if you upgrade. The system comes with a mounting bracket specifically for this SSD upgrade. It will be located inside the box with the power supply in a sealed bag. Windows will score this laptop at a very insulting 5.9 due to the HDD being the lowest sub score. The processor and memory score a whopping 7.9 and the graphics/gaming graphics score a very nice 7.1. Once upgraded, this laptop will score an all around 7.1.

Buyers will be pleased nonetheless. I am so happy with this system.

Got it about 3 weeks ago

Quite powerful. I can use it for both development and gaming.

The sound system can be set to much more louder level than it was in my previous laptop -HP TouchSmart (which is good if you are going to watch movies without headphones).

Only one thing that seemed not to be perfect -I can clearly hear HDD and other electronic noises in my headphones, so consider buying external USB sound card if you like listening to music and have a good pair of headphones.

Had this about a week and with exception of Windows 8 (not an MSI issue) I'm very impressed and happy. Quality feel; doesn't feel plastic and cheap. Keybaord is responsive and quiet. Backlighting is nice as it helps in low light situations. Screen and display is crisp and bright at 50% brightness. Battery charge is decent if the Nvida GPU isn't engaged. Runs quiet as well but when the fan revs up under load it will be noticed; louder than most desktops I think.

I've only run into 2 issues and potential issue, which I haven't yet figured out: 1) Nvida drivers won't update, 2) Sims 3 will not run. On 1), the driver update will start to Install then fail due to not finding "compatible hardware". Everything seems to be working with Nvida graphics; Device manager shows its working properly, Nvida driver website recognizes the GPU and recommends the driver update. Running it or saving it and then running it locally results in the same error.

On 2) the game loads fine but when it enters game mode from a typical install and game updates from launch console, Windows displays a messages that it had problems and is terminating the TS3 program. Made recommended adjustments the DEP and then game goes into "game mode" but then blacks out". Sometimes get a popup saying TS3.exe has been prohibited from accessing graphics hardware. Only way out is hard reboot. The kids weren't happy but I uninstalled the program and will continue to look for a solution. THe potential issue deals with the BD burner not always recognizing a disc I load. SOmetimes I'll have to open and close the drive several times before it will recognize its loaded and display in Explorer.

Win 8 is just a terrible interface for laptop/desktop use. Not efficient at all. Some movements from the mouse or touchpad will take you from your app or desktop window to the tile window. Just very annoying.

If you don't want a big and heavy laptop then don't buy this. The physical specs are pretty true; it's big, barely fits in my Victronoix messenger which is for most 17" laptops. The power unit is also big and heavy. It's 180W supply so be ready.

Win8 new MUI is a pain in the rear!

I purchased laptop for gaming. This laptop is a heck of an upgrade from my older model. No more msgs during game play that my machines video setting is slowing down the game and no more lagging due to built in Killer Network feature!!

That's a laptop for serious gaming... no negative points at all. Some say about the heating, but it is just great, I can stress the card a lot and still got cool temperatures.

ok, so i read all the positive reviews on this laptop & decided to go for it, i bought it here on amazon from DIGIDEALS for $600, boy i must tell you the lappy is sleek, sexy, lightweight, don't overheat and just all round great, the only reason i gave a 4 star rating is because the 0.3mp cam is just teribble for a lappy of this caliber & it's also a fingerprint magnet, no joke, anyways i never will really be using the cam anyway (got an acer d250 & a toshiba nb305 netbooks, by the way the cam is way better on the toshiba, anyways, this laptop is a must have @ this price, and guess what...you see that word "Refurbished" that you keep seeing bandied about all over the net about this laptop?, HA, it comes factory sealed by samsung complete with users manual & packaging, well plastic downed & protected, as hard as you can try, you will not be able to tell if it's new or a refurb. but you wanna know what's the best part of all that has me beaming? i kept seeing everywhere that this lappy comes with an i3 processor, well let me just tell you, I GOT AN i5 running @ 2.27ghz in mine, & it was the R580-JSB1US model,(the JBB2 comes with the i3) boy wasn't that a sweet surprise, see my pix.

I bought this laptop about two months ago and it is absolutely incredible. I still can't believe all that it came with for the price. It is extremely fast, has an intel processor, high quality graphic, comes with a blue ray player, has software within to connect the laptop to your TV, so you can see anything on your laptop on your tv screen including your blue ray movies, etc. (must purchase a box to get the connection complete). Comes with a limited word processing software, and many other extras. After doing months of research this was the absolute best laptop for the money. The only negatives I see is the speakers don't seem to go very loud and the mouse takes a little getting used too, other then that this is one of the best out there.

SO I purchased this a while ago getting a refurb. After literally dropping it from about 6 feet in the air it still works great. I did upgrade the memory to 8gig but still. I am quite pleased. Make a back up BEFORE you start loading software though. Mine (as many don't) didn't come with a Win 7 cd/dvd/
