I have now ordered 2 of these computers. One for my friend who needed a new computer and one for myself for when my current Lenovo dies. I have the G560 laptop and LOVE it. I like that this computer has 4 ports, mine only has 2. I like that it has windows 7. I really think the price is outstanding. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the speakers are not the greatest for watching movies but I just use headphones.

I've been using this for months and it has been fast and reliable. You can't beat it for the money! If you need to do graphics work or video rendering, obviously since this doesn't have a dedicated video card--it wouldn't be a good choice for videographers or photographers running Photoshop or other graphic intense applications.

Great secure packing from Lenovo. Didn't come prepacked with a bunch of junk. But also not loaded with normal things like adobe and flash.

Computer housing, keyboard and touchpad is flimsier than I expected. Is slower than I thought. There seems to be different versions of G570. Which is very confusing.

G570 has a 320G hard drive and 2.2 GHz Pentium B960, and G570 4334eau has 500G hard drive and icore3. I was shopping on a friend's computer under the duress of a HP (piece of s... laptop's CPU failure) and did not notice the extra letters in the different G570 models. I thought I was getting a great deal for $379. Since I've only had it for a month maybe I got an ok older no longer carried by lenovo model. I would have preferred something faster and sturdier.

Two HP laptops I've had failed in just 3 years each. Nvida card melt down in first and CPU failure in the cheap class action suit replacement. Since I was determined not to buy HP ever again or torture myself with Windows 8 my total laptop selection was limited.

I have had this laptop for about 3 days now. I had been wanting the zenbook since the original UX31E had come out, but held back after the reviews about the keyboard and the touchpad.

The new display on the ux31a was an instant sell. Having used nothing but high resolution laptops, i had hung on to my trusty HP 6820p for 4+ years.

The reviews for UX31 are mostly on the mark, but strangely somehow still fail to point the one "true" issue.

Now moving on to something more useful..

1) The display is to die for. I spent an hour with the retina mac pro, while i didn't see both the screens side by side. I'm ecstatic that ASUS is finally pushing laptops to move up from the resolution backsliding going on for the last 5 years. You will not miss the retina display on a mac with this. Half the price is just a bonus.

2) It is _light_.

3) The biggest showstopper is the touchpad out of the box. Yes, i'm referring to the touchpad on ux31, not the older ux31e. Multi touch etc. etc. works well. (have two macs at home for comparison). The thing that just about ruins this little gem is the horrendous behavior of the touchpad when your palm brushes it during typing. There is no way you can really avoid this, and it is impossible to do any typing without the cursor moving and the tap to touch causing irritating behavior. (like prematurely sending an email, closing the email, clicking a background app into focus). How this went past anyone in any QA dept. is beyond me. It's that bad, just typing a 2 line sentence is near impossible. This was entirely preventable with just a bit more diligence by ASUS. This one problem is bad enough to warrant a return if it weren't the fix that later became available.

I upgraded the drivers to the THEN latest on the ux31a page on asus support. They didn't work any better. Update: ASUS has finally put an updated version that addresses the issue much better.

Initially i was concerned that I was out of luck and that this could be a trackpad hardware limitation. Thankfully a bit of investigation digging through the registry in the HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ElanTech revealed a plethora of values that seeemed promising.

Further investigation led to a rather huge thread on this topic on the laptop support forums for the elan trackpads on Samsung laptops. A bit of spelunking revealed an updated driver (10.7.16.1). This one proved to be a winner. Not sure if it was the actual driver update, or the very significantly different configuration settings in the registry that made the difference, but at the end of the day the problem is mitigated nearly completely (and without disabling the trackpad while you are typing).

I think there is still some fine tuning to do with the relatively sensitive trackpad, but am a bit more at ease as I think it's just a matter of tweaking the settings just right. I think the elan folks will get it right with just a bit more time. I wish the control panel utility gave you more tuning options without having to figure it out on a trial and error approach with the registry variables. The newer version samsung is using has an 'advanced' tab which seems to be heading in this direction

This is my first ever review and I am only writing it because I really dig this laptop. I'd hate to have this not succeed due to the egregious trackpad palm detection issue. Asus's strength is clearly not software QA.

A few other observations that I haven't seen mentioned before.

4) The adapter when plugging into socket always seems to spark as it's plugged in. I haven't seen this from any other adapter, so am wondering about the reliability. It also seems to run a bit hot compared the mac one. This is just an observation, not an issue (i had no less than 5 adapters fail with the HP). Update: I was looking for additional adapters so I don't have to keep carrying the one around, they seem to extremely expensive online, ~$120. There are non ASUS brands available all the way down to $15, so will probably try one of those, I wonder what the difference is. I suspect it's to do with the charging logic / led indicator on the OEM one. I thought the charging controller was in the laptop and not the adapter, but not entirely sure about this now.

5) The keyboard is just fine, I saw some posts ranting about ux31 keyboard, and i don't know what they are talking about. It's pretty good, and i type reams.

6) There is bleeding of light at the bottom of the lcd, but it's a non issue and an observation i made only because I read about it on other reviews.

7) The keyboard backlighting is nice to have.. but again, don't think it's as big a deal as it's been made out to be when it was missing in ux31e.

8) The display hinge is just fine, it holds up well. If you suddenly lift it, then there might be a tad amount of sway. I think it's only because this laptop is so thin and light that people apply more g's. (I couldn't do that with my old laptop with both my hands if i wanted to because it was so heavy). It feels pretty sturdy compared to the luddite laptop i am used to.

9) I had tried win 8 for a short period on this laptop, seemed to work about the same. (Reverted to win 7 for work reasons after an hour or so).

10) The battery seems to last 6+ hours with just web browsing / email..

11) The wifi has been working well, no problems so far. The previous HP laptop I had would lose WIFI connection whenever the microwave went on for a minute. This one hasn't exhibited that problem.

12) The USB to Ethernet adapter is unfortunately 10/100, not Gigabit.. and for me it's a big deal. Copying around large VMs is the norm and this limitation is a rather big issue. The limitation seems to be from the PHY ASUS is sourcing from 'asix'? They seem to have a new USB3 to GBE part available, so I'm sure in future models this limitation will be addressed. I wonder why they didn't go with USB 2 to GBE phy as it seems to have been available for a while. It works well, counter intuitively its actually proving to be nicer to use the USB connection than the RJ45 jack.

13) The built in VGA adapter worked great when using a projector. Haven't tried out the HDMI out yet, need to go buy a micro HDMI cable.

14) Headphone out works fine, another reviewer mentioned an issue so tested it just in case.

Rating a 4, due to the trackpad runaround that's now resolved. Folks with trackpad issues should just get the latest version from ASUS or Samsung support site. I prefer the Samsung driver.

I've owned probably 20 laptops in the past (my wife would probably say that's 17 more than I've needed). But to be honest, I've not loved any one of them. Each has come with some sort of compromise that kept it from fully meeting my expectations. Lightweight machines have been underpowered; small screens have had low resolution--leaving me yearning to plug into a full size LCD panel whenever I could; machines with fast CPUs burned my lap and had horrible battery life....and so on.

The Zenbook UX31A is the first computer I've owned that has everything I want: super light weight, solid build quality, fast performance, beautiful display, decent battery life, high performance SSD and (I am a touch typist) a keyboard with great tactile response. Using the UX31A is like driving a German car: everywhere you look, you notice the level of attention to detail in design, and you just know the designers really cared about the end-user experience and didn't simply set out to meet a specification as cheaply as possible.

Asus may have shot themselves in the foot, though: I'm so satisfied, I may not feel the urge to replace this computer for a long, long time.

What you'll love:

1. The full HD IPS display with matte finish is dreamy. Maybe you think 1920 x 1080 is too high a resolution for a 13" display? It's not! With text set to 125%, text is the "right" size, and the fonts are as smooth as a printed page--I can't see the individual pixels. The IPS makes for a screen that's readable at any angle--a godsend for me when the person in front leans their seat back in coach!

2. The keyboard is much improved from the last version, and has the exact feel of my MacBook (which to me is a good thing). The backlighting on the keyboard is a nice addition as well.

3. Instant on. After opening the lid, the computer is usable in around 1 second. Amazing.

4. The aluminum case is impossibly thin, making it super portable. Everyone who sees this machine can't believe it's a real, full Windows PC.

5. The DC power supply. I'm in love with a DC power supply? If you travel a lot like I do, then you understand. This isn't just a generic $2 item Asus sourced from eBay. It's an impossibly tiny power supply that weighs almost nothing and has an 8 foot cord that will reach from any conference room table all the way to a wall outlet. Yes, it's a small detail, but something I appreciate every time I use it.

6. Build quality. The solid metal case is completely rigid and exudes quality industrial design. A $1,000 product shouldn't feel like you got it in a box of cereal, and this one doesn't! Great job, Asus!

7. Bang & Olufsen audio. Remember when choosing a 13" laptop meant you live with a speaker originally designed for a wristwatch? Those days are over--watching video on this laptop is like watching it on your TV! Audio is loud, clear and has a full range of sound. You'll only use your headphones when you don't want to disturb others.

8. The included fabric envelope to carry the notebook is so good you'll actually use it! It's a heavy fabric envelope that I find superb for taking the notebook on short trips to the coffee shop or to a meeting where I only need to take some notes.

9. Runs Windows 8 (June Preview edition) perfectly. I scratch-loaded Windows 8, and while it takes some patience to get all the Windows 7 drivers and utilities installed on Windows 8, everything works beautifully.

What you may not love as much:

1. There's a downside to making a laptop that's thinner than legacy VGA, Ethernet and HDMI connectors--there's no room for them!! Instead, a Micro-HDMI and Mini-VGA connections are provided along with dongles that adapt to standard sized connectors. For wired Ethernet, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is provided. Some ultrabooks are specifically made thicker expressly to include legacy connectors. For me, that's a little silly...an ultrabook should be as thin as possible! But if you disagree and don't like the idea of a dongle for making VGA connections, then you may want one of the thicker Ultrabooks instead.

2. The Zenbook doesn't have the longest battery life among all Ultrabooks. Maybe the thin case has a smaller battery than others? You'll probably get 5 hours or so of battery life on continuous usage. If you need another hour or two, there are ultrabooks can last longer. For me, I find that with the instant on enabled, I can go all day between charges...I just shut the lid when I'm not using the computer and open it when using it (similar to using an iPad).

3. The UX31A, like most Ultrabooks, has 4GB RAM soldered to the motherboard, and no way to upgrade RAM. I think this is really a shame, since I'd gladly have paid more to get more RAM as an insurance policy against what I might want to use the machine for in the future. However I find 4GB is enough for what I'm doing day-to-day, and I doubt most people using an Ultrabook for business scenarios will find they need more than 4GB RAM with Windows 8. However if you're editing video, this might not be the right machine for you.

Overall, I think Asus took the best Ultrabook and made it even better. The last version (the "E" model) was, in my mind, the best small Windows notebook on the market...but fell just a little short of the elegant design of the MacBook Air. This new model, however, has moved the bar up insanely high for other Ultrabooks, and in my mind eliminated any reason why a Windows user would switch to a Mac to get superior hardware designs. I have a MacBook Pro...and this is the first time I can honestly say I like a Windows laptop more than a MacBook!

Edit: My second laptop doesn't have any problems. I'm getting about 5 hours of battery life while doing light programming and listening to music on auto-brightness (there's a brightness sensor) which sets the display at about 60 percent brightness indoors.

I received this laptop a few hours ago and I'm going to give my first impressions on the device.

Build Quality and Design:

Apart from the different color on the keyboard and lack of hideous script font above the keyboard that was on the original zenbook, the Prime looks about the same. Since this is the 31A, it has a Aluminum Unibody design, and from messing around with various Macbook Air's this device seems to be just as well built. I like the front panel design over the Air but that's down to personal preference.

Accessories:

Being an $1000+ device I would expect a nice amount of goodies, and included is a VGA and Ethernet adapter. There is no micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter, but I find myself using VGA most of the time when giving presentations anyway, so I suppose that's not too bad of a loss. The Air (afaik) does not come with these adapters so that is a small plus. The adapters have their own little pouch to store separately. The combination synthetic leather/canvas sleeve that is included fits fairly snugly, though there is enough space to cram in an adapter if you need to. The AC adapter is about the same size as the Apple counterpart, which is good.

Screen Quality:

Being a UX31A the laptop packs a 1920x1080 Matte IPS panel. In a not-very-scientific test viewing angles (obviously) far exceed that of my desk TN panel, and brightness and contrast all seem to be much better. Granted, I'm comparing to a 23" Hanns LCD I paid $60 for. There was a comment earlier about the screen being dimmer than that of the previous gen, and I haven't tested it outside, but it seems to just fine for my purposes. The matte finish is also a plus. There is a bit of back light bleed on the bottom and right hand sides of the screen, but when watching a sample 1080p movie, it didn't bother me at all. I like the increased resolution on the device and it's a definite step up from traditional 1366x768 panels. Text is sometimes a bit small on the default size in chrome but that is easily remedied.

Performance:

Thankfully, an ADATA XM11 128GB SSD is included. This is a Sandforce drive and I'm getting benchmark scores of 470/150 MB/s RW Sequential, 18/44 MB/s RW 4K random, 113/144 MB/S RW 4k Random 64QD, and access times of .155/.277 ms RW, for a total score of 462 in AS-SSD. This is comparable to my old Vertex 2 in my desktop, so no worries about disk performance here. The system boots boots in about 20 seconds and resumes quickly. It scores a 7.9 WEI in terms of disk performance, though that's not a the best indicator in general.

I haven't done anything intensive with the CPU yet but things seem to be holding up well with little slowdown. I also tried messing around in Diablo III on the integrated HD4000 graphics. I set the game to 1024x768, and everything else to minimum, and from a short session of Act III Inferno, the graphics performed okay, with some stutter and slowdown depending on how many effects were on the screen. If you want to do more than just casual gaming, go for the UX32VD with the GT620M graphics. After playing for a bit the fan kicked on and hot air began coming out of the vent located above the keyboard. The fan was not loud enough to hear over the speakers, which put out a decent amount of volume for the size of the laptop.

Keyboard/Trackpad:

Asus touts the keyboard as being much improved over the previous generation, though I'm not sure if I notice that. I've tried out the original zenbook at stores a few times and this feels similar. I've typed this review on the keyboard without any problems, but it'll be clear to you that you are typing on a scissor-switch laptop keyboard. This also leads to me to the flaw in my item the backlight. Two of the keys in the center refuse to light at all, regardless of the brightness level I set. Hence, it's going back to Amazon for an exchange. Pity. The trackpad is made by Elantech, which may make some people cringe, but for the most part, I haven't had a problem. I like to rest one hand on the left click button and right other to scroll, and there were no glitches I noticed in the last few hours. The only multi-touch feature I really use is two finger scrolling, which works well enough in Chrome. It's not as smooth as OSX is, but I would assume that is because of Windows 7, and will be improved in Windows 8.

If you're trying to decide between this and the Air, it mainly comes down to a few factors OS, Screen Quality, Discrete Graphics, and support. If you have a rabid obsession with one OS over the other your choice should already be clear. If you value screen quality, both are solid choices while the Air has a 1440x900 TN panel, it still looks good, though the viewing angles are likely not as wide, and the resolution obviously lower. Anandtech rates both this laptop and the Air well in screen quality. If you value discrete graphics, only the UX32 line offers you that. If you value support I would go with the Air, as nothing beats being able to go into a store and coming out with a fixed laptop.

If you're set on Windows or want a 1080P IPS Panel, no other ultrabook touches the Zenbook prime right now. Sony has a similarly-specced laptop out, which has a GT640LE and 1600x900 screen, but that is much heavier and thicker. This is an expensive device, no doubt, so if you can give up some screen quality and are okay with slightly slower integrated graphics, you should consider a previous gen ultrabook.

Honest reviews on ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 13.3-Inch Ultrabook

I ordered this Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 ultrabook from Amazon and received it promptly and in perfect condition this week. The i5 proc (newer "ivy bridge" model) has plenty of power for my use (and for almost any average use), and for what I'm using this for, I also don't need more than 128GB of storage, so I decided to go with this model instead of the DB72, which has the i7 proc and 256 SSD. I had been waiting for this upgraded Zenbook to come out for a little while, and Amazon was the 1st place I found that had it available, and I have usually had very good experiences purchasing through Amazon, so the negligible difference in price between Amazon's price and the suggested retail price wasn't an issue. So far, this is everything I thought it would be and I absolutely love it. In my opinion, the display is extremely nice, HD 1080p, and the screen is low-glare, so it looks great and is easy on the eyesight. In addition to the newer model proc, the screen is another nice upgrade from the previous Zenbook. The keyboard is perfect and comfortable (and backlit, which the previous Zenbook was lacking). It's very light and portable, fits in my purse with the included envelope-type sleeve, which is a pretty decent cover, at least until I find a sleeve or case I like better.

After researching many different models and manufacturers, the only other "ultrabook" that I considered before purchasing the Zenbook Prime was the Macbook Air. I'm not an Apple product hater, but I honestly just prefer a Windows machine, so this ultrabook was the clear winner for me, and I couldn't be happier with it so far. I could go on and on comparing the two machines, and describing the technical specs of this Zenbook Prime, but there are so many technical reviews out there that already do that very well (and I think Apple/Mac vs. PC/Windows thing that I constantly see on forums everywhere is so boring it's ridiculous!!!!), so I'm just giving my initial personal experience and opinions about this product that I purchased in this review. It is awesome! It's lived up to all the critical acclaim and all of my expectations of it so far.

So this laptop can apparently come with two different types of hard drives (both 256 gig ssds). If you buy this laptop, you will either get the Sandisk U100 or the ADATA MX11. An uninformed consumer probably wouldn't know or care what the difference between these two drives are, but they should!

The Sandisk U100 has the worst write speeds of current SSDs. The Zenbook prime I ordered was horribly slow at transferring files because of this. When I took the laptop back to the retailer, I requested an exchange for one with the ADATA MX11 hard drive. I was told by the retailer that there is no way to tell which hard drive you will get without opening the retail packaging. Note that opening the retail packaging renders the product used.

I feel Asus should put the hard drive brand on the outside of the box so that consumers can make a proper informed decision. The ADATA MX11 outperforms the Sandisk U100 in every way and this can be seen in performance tests when comparing the two.

I would not recommend anyone purchase this at this time. At least until Asus is more forthcoming about which SSD they are putting in this Zenbook.

Update.

Well I must say this has been a pretty horrible experience, and I'm never buying an Asus product again.

The screws on the laptop keep falling out. I am now missing 2 of them and the only way to get them replaced is to ship it to Asus. I any afford to do that as I need to have a computer for school and work.

The hard drive performance is painfully slow, and of course Asus won't replace the drive.

My best advice to anyone thinking of purchasing this device or any Asus product is to avoid at all costs.

This is a fairly good laptop which runs smoothly on Windows XP. However, the display clock and date does not update automatically. It stays on the last date and time the laptop was used. If you want it to keep an accurate time and date you have to reset the time each time you boot the laptop. Also, the speaker ceases occasionally and if you must enjoy the sound you need to short down and re-start the laptop again. It stays permanently on the dining table where the whole family uses it for all sorts of things, read emails, play You Tube Clips, do home work, etc. On a general note, the machine gives value for the cheap price paid for it.

I had a Gateway NV52 and it was a great machine while it lasted. After 3 years both mine and my sister-in-laws (same model) died of the same problem a bad motherboard. A common problem and replacement parts are too expensive.

Sad because other brand laptops (HP, Dell) have lasted way longer and the Gateway wasn't treated rough or anything.

Bought this laptop for my daughter and she is thrilled with it. It is a very pretty laptop which Gateway is known for, however, it operates as good as it looks. The fan is not loud, good speed with clear picture. I would like to find one for myself in white, but so far they have been sold out everywhere. Highly recommended.

Most current netbooks have a lot of similarities--with the same processor (Atom N270), similar size hard drives (most new with 160 GB) and similar LCD panel resolutions. The HP Mini-Note 2140 is no exception to most of these base tech specs except for the LCD panel resolution of 1024x576 (instead of 1024x600 like most others in the 10" range).

So why is this 2140 my current marginal favorite in comparison, after trying out friends' and those available in stores?

Unlike most manufacturers, HP really got the keyboard right. The shift keys and enter key are large and where you expect them to be. Unlike other manufacturers, things are in place for productive touch typing and the 92%-size of standard laptop keyboard is pretty easy to adjust to.

The exterior casing is made of solid-feeling aluminum instead of plastic. The netbook feels more durable and looks beautiful in comparison to most netbooks which can look a bit cheap in my opinion. The aluminum adds a few ounces to the weight, but mine is still under 3 pounds with the 6 cell battery.

The netbook has a good selection of ports and connectors on the outside. It comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot which no other netbook currently does as far as I'm aware. Most of the other connectors are similar to other netbooks. It also has 2 USB ports, an analog (vga) monitor out jack (see below for my complaints about it), an SD card slot and separate mic and audio out jacks.

You would think I would be raving about this netbook, but I ran into some problems with my computer that make it less usable.

I am unable to get any resolution above 1024x768 on any of the three external monitors I've tried it on. Two of the monitors are 1280x1024 resolution and one is 1440x900. This is even with ONLY the external monitor enabled. At the same time, my 4 year old notebook and my desktop detect and make correct resolutions available for the 1280x1024 monitors (my other monitor is a slightly odd resolution). Updating drivers seems to make no difference (the one from HPs site or the Intel drivers). The monitor will not detect correctly and free software (Monitor Asset Manager) that bypasses the windows registry to query the plug'n'play monitor properties directly cannot detect the external monitors correctly on this piece of hardware (works fine on both my other computers).

It seems other people are not having the same kinds of problems that I am encountering, so I was either the lucky recipient of a computer with some highly ingrained software or hardware problems, or it has difficulty playing nice with some monitors that have pretty standard resolutions.

Unfortunately, HP support is somewhere between awful and abysmal and has not chosen to make any reply to my support request email aside from an automatic confirmation they received it (and it has been over two weeks).

A more minor quibble is that the built-in LCD panel resolution is only 1024x576 instead of 1024x600 like most other netbooks. Though it's only a 24-line difference, on this small of a screen every pixel counts more than on a larger monitor. At least the resolution is properly advertised so you know what you're getting.

The touchpad also has it's buttons on the side, which some people dislike but didn't bother me.

It's overall a good netbook. If HP would fix my external monitor issues, I'd probably think it was the best one currently available. As it stands, it's a good, but mine is flawed and my experience with HP's support has been very poor so far.

I've had my new HP 2140 for about a week now and so far so good. Setup was like any new laptop. Fast and easy. I especially like the XP operating system over Vista. First thing I noticed was the solid construction of this Netbook. It doesn't feel cheap and made of plastic. The keyboard also had a well constructed feel that had just enough room without feeling cramped.

Now the software package was limited but did offer a 30 day trial version of the MS Office 2007. I had no issues connecting to my draft N wireless network and printer setup completed in less than a minute. I do recommend the larger 6 cell battery which is rated for about 8 hours. Depending on how you use it you may get less than 6 hours like me.

In conclusion I really like this unit. I did my research prior to purchasing. According to Cnet reviews, this was the unit to beat and I have to say they are right. The screen size is nice and the 160 gb is plenty of storage for me. My unit came with a free Netbook sleeve to carry it in and yes you can still use the sleeve with the 6 cell battery attached. I may add another gb of ram for a faster multi tasking experience. The web cam seemed to work well with Skype. Picture quality was ok. As mentioned by other users the mouse button location had a slight learning curve but wasn't bad.

Bought one of the first 2140s that shipped in February 2009. Have already taken it on a 1 month trip to China. This is my 1st netbook, and 5th notebook that I have owned since 2002.

The portability and convenience of the 10" form factor is great. The screen is bright, and when compared to other netbooks the HP Mini 2140's metal exterior makes it a stand out. I had a chance to sample and feel many other netbooks while in Hong Kong and while some of them may have a few things in their favor, I realized the HP 2140 was the best choice for me.

No problems connecting to any wireless / wired networks in hostels / hotels / coffee shops. The split trackpad button layout has not been a problem to adjust to. Both buttons have a nice rubbery feel/response. The quick battery recharge to 90% has been good. 6-cell battery provides a good tilt, now I don't need to bring a CoolPad to angle the keyboard!! The 1024x576 is a minor quibble. I can't imagine reading the text on the high-resolution 1366x768 display. Contrrary to some opinions, I prefer the coating/glass/whatever that is on the screen easy to clean, and I don't worry about touching it.

I have not tried an external monitor or printing with this netbook, so I am unable to comment on those aspects.

Soon I will test the ExpressCard 54 slot with a Creative Labs audio card that I am using on another notebook. UPDATE X-Fi Audio Xtreme card has been tested and works!

Performance wise only issues are a little lag if running too much video and a couple of blue screens when too many Google Chrome tabs were open along with other programs. Memory overload of some sort. But easy to avoid, once one knows the limitations of the processor. Used the netbook to talk with a handheld SkyPE Ipevo phone in many places. Handy!

One annoyance (That I was aware of before buying) is that to use the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys one must use the FN key at the same time. Which is swappable with the LEFT corner CTRL key (Not the RIGHT CTRL key, which would make it a one handed motion unless I missed a setting) in the BIOs but still annoying as the smaller screen requires more scrolling. The trackpad scroll works well though. Other netbooks have dedicated PAGE-UP/DOWN keys.

I also own an HP DV6000 series limited edition white notebook which is slick but - after experiencing the aluminum/metal feel of the the HP Mini I will say that more note/netbooks should be built with metal over plastic. Enjoy!

NOTE: This review is of the 6-cell version. This review is attached to the 3-cell version on Amazon. Both are identical except for the battery size/life.

BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU PLAN TO PRINT FROM THIS TO AN HP PRINTER....IT WON'T WORK WITH SOME HP PRINTERS YOU MAY OWN.

All in all, this is a great little device. Powerful, compact, well thought out. BUT--and this is a BIG but....could not get the HP Mini 2140 to print to an fairly new HP Photosmart C6180 printer. Even after spending literally days on the phone with HP's engineers in Bangalore, this is a nonstarter, and I ultimately returned the device. There's just no excuse for this, particularly since the printer accepts jobs on our home network from our Macbook Pros and from our Thinkpads, but NOT from this nice, new handy, dandy HP Mini.

BE VERY CAREFUL.

I wanted a 2140 high-rez for a long time and finally bought one just before it was discontinued by HP. I was soooo excited to get it as it is a sexy and slick looking little machine. I wanted to like this machine so bad, but the 2140 has serious connection issues, in terms of WI-FI, and does not connect to many different signals and routers. You can't just take it to a coffee shop, because there is at least a 50% chance it won't work with their router. It is a useless machine, as it has terrible WI-FI. Just do a search on Google that reads "2140 wireless problems", and you will find large forum discussions of 2140 owners that have this same problem, or inability to connect wirelessly to the internet, and there is NO FIX available. The machine is fundamentally flawed and I believe it was discontinued because of this flaw. HP took the machine back, and I still believe they are a good company, but this machine is a dud.

I haven't bought this because I can't justify paying that much

for a 14" notebook. The features do not justify the cost. A couple

of bones less might be good but the current price is just too much.

I'm sure, being it is a Gigabyte product that it really does merit

5 stars because I have built many computers using Gigabyte motherboards

and none of them have failed including one computer that I have had running

24/7 for 5 years now. Bring down the cost and I will be an instant customer!

I like the computer in general. The only thing that I don't like is the hard drive which is 5400 RPM. It should be at least 7200 RPM to match the speed of the processor so that video editors like me don't have problem during rendering of video. The unit is over the need (requirement)for those who are just typing and doing some computer stuff but under rated for those who will use this for video editing and other task involving video rendering. I don't like the windows 8 as well, I cannot install some software that I need. They should adopt what windows7 have and compatible with. I give 4 star only because of the hard drive speed and windows8 compatibility.

This laptop comes with Windows 8, but does not have the touch-display capabilities. I find that the Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but there are pre-loaded videos that do a good job of explaining how to use this OS.

The display and graphics are rather disappointing, despite calibration. I wish I had paid the extra $$ for the Blu-ray player, but all in all, the memory, speed and functionality are decent for the amount I paid for this laptop.

I was very disappointed to find out that the keyboard, which was supposed to be back-lite had no such feature. I believe I paid extra for that and now have to figure out how to either get a reimbursement or just accept a laptop from Amazon without all of the features I ordered. I expected that with Amazon's reputation, this kind of thing would not happened. More needs to be done with the vendors you qualify to fill the orders. Contact me to make this right.

I been owning this laptop for a month now and I got to say for the price you can't really get more bang for your buck. The firewire/USB Hybrid port is really cool because you get a firewire port and don't lose a USB port.

This is a list of all the ports.

4 USB (2 normal usb port 1 USP powered port and the firewire/usb Hybrid)

1 SD card slot.

1 VGA output

1 HDMI output

1 PCI ExpressCard slot a rarity these days but that mean USB 3.0 is just one easy upgrade away.

1 Gigabit Ethernet

1 DVD/CD Burner tray look flimsy but who use CD or DVD anymore anyway?

This version of the Edge 15 come with 2GB of DDR3 Ram but you can push it to 8GB with two of these babies! 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) 1066MHz DDR31066/PC38500 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM KTL-TP1066/4G

Come with Windows 7 whatever version I played with 7 for about twenty minutes than I got bored and partitioned the drive and installed Ubuntu Maverick for real work. In Linux Everything worked right out of the box Wi-Fi, HDMI, Compiz, the Webcam you name it this baby does it! This is by far the easiest Linux experience I ever had with both a laptop and desktop.

Pros Everything

Cons nothing worse than the DVD flimsiness.

Finding balance between a good gaming system and portable notebook is a difficult endeavor. There are plenty of 15.6" or 17" screen systems out there that are able to pack the highest performing components inside, but leave your shoulder/back aching. On the other side of the spectrum, there are a number of sleek, ultra book class notebooks that are easy to carry, but leave you wanting more performance. I needed a high performance notebook that allows me to multi-task and game a bit while away from home. The MSI GE40 is a nice compromise between the two categories with a few caveats.

Design:

Weighing in at 4.4ish pounds, the GE40 is quite light for what it packs inside. The palm rest and lid are a brushed aluminum. The lid has eye-catching red LEDs in the form of "dragon eyes". The rest of the body is comprised of your standard glossy plastic that attracts finger prints, but isn't handled all that often in everyday use. There is more flex in the palm rest and keyboard than a full aluminum chassis, but it doesn't scream poor quality.

Screen:

My main issue with the GE40 is the quality of the screen. While it does feature a high 1600x900 resolution for a 14" screen, it is an average TN panel with OK viewing angles. This evaluation is quite subjective although I personally think the vertical viewing angles are quite poor. You will need to view the screen dead or the images will be washed out. This left me a little frustrated trying to watch netflix on my bed.

Performance:

With a high wattage Intel Haswell Quad-core 4th generation processor, it chews through everything quite quickly. The lower wattage CPUs in ultrabooks are primarily designed for battery longevity and much lower thermals with decent performance. The difference between Apple's latest generation Macbook air with it's 15W Dual-Core CPU and the GE40 is very noticeable in the programs that I use (namely Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, transcode applications). The dynamic overclocking of the CPU also allows lightly threaded applications to take advantage of higher clock speeds whilst putting the unused cores to sleep.

The graphics duties are shared between the integrated intel HD4600 and a dedicated NVIDIA GTX 760M. The switching is handled with NVIDIA's optimus tech. The integrated graphics are powerful enough to handle the Windows GUI acceleration, Flash, and movie playback to conserve power and reduce heat generation. The GTX 760M kicks in when you launch a full screen 3D application, allowing you to take advantage of a large performance increase. The GTX 760M did a great job of providing acceptable frame rates at the native resolution in the games I play. For specific numbers, look up the GTX 760M on Notebookcheck.com

The included 750GB 7200RPM hard disk drive is another low point of the system. I am aware of the upgraded model of the GE40 that features a 128GB solid state drive (SSD), but I opted for this model as I was planning to purchase my own SSD with more capacity. Booting into Windows is slow as is opening most applications, especially concurrently. This is problem is compounded with the preinstalled Norton security software that constantly scans on startup and application access. I've already swapped the HDD with a Sandisk Extreme II that has increased the responsiveness exponentially and plan on purchasing a HDD module to replace the DVD-Rom drive.

While the GE40 has 8GB of DDR3-Low Voltage memory installed, it is a single DIMM. This is both a plus and minus. With a single DIMM, you drop your effective bandwidth to 10GB/ps for the CPU and integrated GPU. You'll be hard pressed to see a noticeable drop in performance, but this is supposed to be a high end system. On the other hand, if you were planning to go to a total of 16GB of RAM, you won't have to buy x2 8GB DIMMs. Just grab 1 8GB DIMM and you'll get your dual channel memory performance.

Preinstalled Software:

Windows 8: You either love it or hate it. I personally like Microsoft's new OS due to the faster performance and support for new hardware technologies. I'm not a fan of the Start Screen, but that's easily remedied with a third party start menu replacement. The product key for Windows is integrated into the UEFI BIOS of the system so you won't need to enter a key during Windows setup. Just activate once you've reinstalled the OS.

As I mentioned before, Norton and other trialware is preinstalled. You'll be greeted with a number of desktop cluttering icons and background services taking up system resources. It isn't nearly as bad as some, but again, this is a gaming system that shouldn't have junk preinstalled to begin with.

I personally reinstalled Windows 8 after installing an extra 8GB DIMM and a SSD to replace the HDD. Be prepared to download the wireless LAN drivers beforehand as Windows 8 doesn't come with them out of the box. There are also a plethora of other drivers that need to be reinstalled to restore full functionality (Bluetooth, WLAN switch, ETC).

Noise/Heat:

In normal operation, the notebook is a bit warm to the touch and the fan constantly runs at a slight hum. The fan is audible, but not overtly or annoyingly so. When gaming, the notebook does get hot. It's not unbearable, but it isn't super comfortable either. The fan kicks it into high gear and is very noisy. I was able to hear it every between explosions in game with my headphones on. Both the heat and noise levels are to be expected, especially with the amount of performance packed into such a small chassis.

Overall evaluation:

The MSI GE40 is a great notebook that fills my needs well. The balance of portability and performance allows me to finish my work quickly to get a little bit of play in. If you can cram your programs and games onto a 128GB SSD, you'll find more value in the upgraded version of the GE40. Otherwise both notebooks can stand to have an additional 8GB of memory and a clean install of Windows to maximize its performance and your enjoyment.

Update 7/10/2013:

I was curious if I could get the thermals down a bit, so I opened up my notebook again to see what kind of job MSI did with the thermal paste. As I suspected, they put way too much on which was hindering the heat transfer from the CPU and dedicated GPU to the heatpipe assembly. I'm sure it's their policy that it's better to have too much than too little.

Dis-assembly was not that difficult; 8 philips screws and the fan and heatpipe was easily removed. I cleaned up the factory paste and wiped the CPU/GPU and heatpipe with some isotropic alcohol. I then applied a thin layer of artic silver 5 and put it all back together. Subjectively, the notebook runs cooler. The fan spins slower at idle and comes back down from 100% quicker after playing a game. The palm rest and WASD keys were also a bit cooler. I didn't record before and after temperatures, but there are a couple youtube videos detailing this modification and the tangible results.

If you are comfortable performing this procedure, I wholeheartedly recommend doing it. Your left palm and wrist will thank you.

I have only been using it for a few days now so I cannot say to much about the longevity of the machine, but so far I am loving it! Its very small, thin, and lightweight yet very powerful. So far I have managed to play Bioshock infinite, Far cry 3, Boarderlands 2 all on ultra settings unplugged, and on power saver mode, with playable frame rates. Turn it on performance mode and it runs silky smooth. Im getting great battery performance as well, I have yet to record the amount of time im getting with it while playing games or just surfing the web, however I would expect about 2hrs playing games on ultra settings, and about 5 surfing the web at the moment. Reviews have said it can get around 8hrs with the right settings surfing the web. The only downside would be the display, however 1600x900 is perfectly fine display for a 14" laptop, and everything looks crystal clear to me. The sound quality is also decent considering the size of this laptop, you can only expect so much. I am loving the location of the speakers, and the grill that covers them make it seem as if they are not even there. Looks great, anyways if you are looking for a small, portable laptop that is a power house at a reasonable price, im thinking you found it! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend.

Honest reviews on MSI G Series GE40 2OC-008US 14-Inch Laptop (Black/Red)

I need a do it all laptop and this one was it for me. I'm so happy with it! I have been getting tired of having to mess with my game settings from my pc to my gaming laptop and with my ultra book. I wanted to have a laptop that I could use for school, at work, game, and just surf. It needed to be light and easy to take with me but also able to game without performance issues. I did a bit of reading for what is out there now and this is everything I wanted. It looks great, I like how the sticker is an option. The only issue I have with it is it's a bit loud when gaming but it's not at all a deal breaker for me. I'm glad this isn't touch screen even with windows 8 (which I don't care for) the touch pad is great and I love that when I hook up my gaming mouse the touch pad is disabled.

Great product. I also ordered 16 gig of RAM from Crucial to max it out. Love the Edge 531. It flies thru Photoshop! My only complaint is the display is lacking. Particularly for photo editing. However that being said, I'm ordering a 24" monitor which remedies that problem. I've been an HP person for years but after a week of intense research decided this was e best bang for the buck. So far I'd say I made the right decision....

My wife bought this laptop last week. This laptop looks very good. The keyboard is slick. Touchpad is sensitive. The screen is bright. But I can not run some application like Photoshop fluently, because the RAM Memory is less. I can not open many Chrome tabs. Some time I have "not responsive" from windows. We are so exhausted with this laptop and return it yesterday. We ordered a new one with the same price but the system is higer. That laptop has 4Gb Ram

You can see that laptop I've ordered here:

I was so excited when I got this laptop. It was so powerful and ahead of the other machines, who wouldn't be excited! Initially, it performed great, ran well with Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel, especially gaming. I was disappointed in the weight, weighing in at 9 pounds for just the laptop and power supply. It was impossible to travel with (I had hoped for mobile power, but I got power that needed wheels). Traveling a lot for work and needing to do design on the road just became cumbersome. Once you add in your spare hard drive, mouse, headset etc. the airline won't even let you carry it on.

It lasted about 1 month before it started crashing on simple programs like MS Word. Really? I was able to back all my data and files up to a Western Digital hard drive (those rock!). Just in time before the whole machine crashed. Even my keyboard wasn't working. I sent it back to Asus, and after testing it, there were a ton of hardware failures the wireless LAN card, the motherboard, one of the hard drives and the keyboard. Getting parts replaced wasn't too hard the first time.

About 4 months later, same issues. Still under a year old, I had all my important documents for work on the machine and hadn't backed them up for 4 months of design work (my bad). My hard drives failed and I wasn't going to just have them replace it again and lose all that data, I had to get my data recovered before I could send it in. They offered no technical support for that and when calling in to speak to a supervisor, it literally took me about 3 weeks and about 12 hours of being on hold (I'm like a bulldog when someone makes me that mad, so I refused to let go and give up). After finally getting through, she didn't say anything different that the peanuts I spoke to before and the only solution was to send it in and make sure I either back up my data or am prepared to lose it because they only replace parts. So I ended up having to go to an IT place where it took them 3 days (very expensive!) to get my hard drives to intermittantly work to recover my data.

Once recovered, we sent it in, they AGAIN replaced the motherboard, hard drives, keyboard, WLAN card. Turns out this machine runs hot and just fries the components. So after nearly losing my work data twice in under a year, and the amount of time it takes to get Asus to help (I give them a 0 in customer service), I would steer clear of Asus laptops. I will never buy one again. Unfortunately, they have the most flash parts out there I avoid the brand now, but it's hard and I cringe every time I have to support that company. We're building new desktops now to get more power and be able to cool the machines more efficiently, I opted to spend $200 more on a motherboard that wasn't made by Asus. But I guess if you can just throw it away when you're done and don't mind upgrading often or have important files you store, then maybe it's ok for you. In my opinion, it's a very expensive laptop to throw away, which I have done. Think "Office Space".

This is actually my first laptop ever. I am so glad I invested the money in this. I have not had any issues with this. As you know ASUS is a gaming brand, I am not a heavy gamer, but i know that any new game i buy i do not have to worry about system requirements. This puppy has a super fast processor and enough memory to last you for a good while. I recommend for those who plan on gaming, graphic work or anything that requires something quick to do the job.

This computer is nice and quick. It is less than the regular ultrabook with the i7, but i think the i5 has enough for regular office and internet use. If you need a great gaming or design software computer i would spend the money for the i7.

There is no cd player, but you have to ask yourself, do we even use those any more anyway? I prefer it w/o anyway for weight reason and the battery life is ridiculously awesome.

Overall, very happy with our purchase as it is perfect for what we needed.

Great laptop, having this laptop for 4 days, everything works well so far. The screen is not one of the best but acceptable. Keyboard and trackpad works very well. Battery up to 5 hours depends on how you use it. I got 5 hours for surfing the internet and watching youtube. I used torrent and let the screen be turned off, it got up to 8-9 hours. It gets some heat and can be quite hot at the bottom but you will rarely notice it unless you touch the bottom. So far so good, it's very light and thin. I usually use it for email, webs, movies when I'm at school and I really like it! But I have to take off 1 star because of the battery and the screen, but other than those, everything is perfect.

Honest reviews on HP Folio 13-1029WM 13.3" Ultrabook (1.4 GHz Intel Core i3-2367M

I bought mine at WalMart on 9/29/12 and had to travel to a store 45 miles away to get the last one in the area. It has a great battery life, longer than any laptop I have ever had. It boots up/shuts down in seconds. The look and feel is very nice. The aluminum top makes it as nice as a Mac Air. I really like the lighted keyboard, but use sparingly because it depletes the battery a bit quicker. I think it is a very nice machine for $500; too bad they are all sold out, even online.

I had to download and update the Fresco driver to get the USB 3.0 drive to work. You will probably need to buy a USB extender (2.0 or 3.0) because you will need more ports.

I installed Adobe's Lightroom 3 and uploaded 240 RAW pictures via a Compact Flash reader. It took 5 minutes to import all of the pics. Editting was a breeze. When I exported to the SSD in JPG format, it took 5 1/2 minutes to process for of the pictures. Therefore, I can say that the HP3000 GPU and the i3 processor struggles to handle this type of application. This is the reason for the 4 stars. All other applications seem to work fine.

I was somewhat reluctant to purchase such an expensive item from a company I wasn't familiar with. As well as the fact that the specs were different than what is advertised on the Apple website. I researched the company and did not find any negative reports. The computer came exactly as stated and delivered in a very timely manner. The memory, speed, etc. was much better than what I would have received from the Apple Store or Website & the best part, it was cheaper!!!
