There is soooo much I can say about this laptop.

Let's see where to start...

1. Arrived on time straight from Amazon in the Sony Vaio Box.

2. Packaged really securely, nothing difficult.

3. Very beautiful. Much prettier in person :-)

4. It's not heavy, but it's not light either lol.

5. I was a bit terrified of learning how to use Windows 8, but luckily there is a "Desktop" tab on the homepage that will take you back to the Windows 7 set up, for those who are afraid of Windows 8 like I am!

6. The "Left" and "Right" click buttons that are usually on the touchpad are not visible but they are there. You just have to press the left and right sides of the pad and you'll feel them.

7. Isolated keyboard is nice because the keys are soft almost as if they're padded. They're not hard, make your fingers feel like they're touching soft rubber or something similar (I can't find the right material to compare the keys to lol)Also, the keyboard lights up automatically when a key is touched. This feature can obviously be turned off and on by the user.

8. There is a whole set up with user names and passwords and color customization when you first turn the computer on. It takes about 10-15 mins.

9. My battery went up to about 4 hours and 4 minutes at only 75% I think it was....so when I fully charge it I'll see if it goes up even higher.

10. I've literally only had it for 13 hours so far haha! And I'm IN LOVE!!!

11. OHHH HOW COULD I FORGET? SONY made me proud of them for this one: SPEAKERS are TREMENDOUSLY L-O-U-D!!!! you could host a party with using just the speakers haha! Went on youtube while the television was on and it blasted out the tv! So, if you can find a GOOOOOOOD quality external speaker, you'll never need headphones again (only if used to not disturb others)

12. Gosh...I think that's all that needs to be said now.....the layout is one that users have to get used to....luckily my curiosity allowed me to click "desktop" and I was back to the Windows 7 that I know and love lol (so no mental breakdowns for me lol)But I do like how you can switch between both Windows with the click of one button. The button with the 4 squares next to the left Alt button. I think it's called the "Windows" button lol. (duh)

13. But yeah....I HIGHLY recommend this laptop to any and everyone. I have had my SONY dvd player for over 2 years and my hp laptop was tripping out a year after I had it, and finally just STOPPED working after 3 yrs, so I said, "Hey, if my dvd player is to little, but carries such a loud sound and has such good quality, I'm gonna save some money and buy myself a new SONY laptop"...and SONY you did NOT disappoint! 5 stars :-)

I was extremely picky when I decided to buy a laptop since it is my first one. I have read numerous reviews that had actually helped me lean away from many other laptops that I thought were perfect, so I hope that this review will be just as helpful. I had bought it because it seemed to fit my needs and was very up-to-date with plenty of hard drive space and RAM. I thought I had a good grasp of what I was getting, but there were many little things that actually happened to work in my favor. I've had this laptop for about a month now, and here are the facts that I find most useful for potential buyers:

To begin with, this laptop carries only Windows 8, and cannot be converted back and forth between 7 or 8 (at least not out of the box), as I had seen on reviews of almost identical model (and incorrectly assumed this one had that feature as well). If you have never used this version, I would strongly suggest reviewing Windows 8 before purchasing this laptop since it it very different than any other Windows version (it is strongly based on apps). I was extremely upset to discover this since I had an xp computer and very used to the format. After getting used to it though (and deleting a lot of the pointless apps that were already on there) it is actually a very handy and time-efficient way to maneuver between programs, just my opinion though.

As one of the negative comments mentioned, the product IS extremely poorly packaged. It consisted of a lot of space one crumpled sheet of paper, and then the cardboard box that contained the laptop. I am by no means surprised that that reviewer received his broken. Fortunately, mine was completely fine. Unlike that review, the laptop looks amazing and certainly does not feel like it is made from the same material as "a plastic spoon," as I believe he described it.

I have read on other Vaio laptops, that the touch pad is just awful, which I confirmed when testing out another model. I didn't really mind, since I liked mice better anyway. Luckily, this touch pad is more than I could ask for. It is fairly sensitive, so you barely have to touch it to click something, but all these features can be adjusted as well. I really like the two-finger scroll feature. In some of the laptops I've used, this function is awful and scrolls halfway down the page with barely moving (and it was a function issue, not a sensitivity issue), but it is really nice on this one. I don't even think I'll need a mouse at this point because the pad is basically just as versatile.

The light-up keyboard is very nice, I just wanted to point that out. The battery life is bout 4 hours when fully charged, and that's with my screen up to full brightness, since it seems a little dark at any other setting. The speakers are pretty quiet. I can have them up to the max and its nothing; I anticipated that though, and knew I wanted external speakers even before buying this laptop. Camera works just fine. I know this, but you need a special program, such as Windows Movie Maker, to turn the camera on or record anything since nothing of this sort is already installed. I had not known this and not sure if that's common, but it's really not a huge deal since Movie Maker is free.

A very specific and personal comment though. Windows 8 is not compatible with the Chrome Toolbox Extension, which I liked specifically for asking me every time to close all tabs when multiple are open. Without it, Chrome just closes the window, and I've mistakenly done that a few times. But that one slight downfall for me to Windows 8.

Just a personal preference that made me really happy: The top of the laptop can be opened without holding the bottom down. :D

The time it takes to turn this computer on/off (about 4 seconds) is incredible. Another pretty huge plus is that this laptop never gets hot on the bottom. It is always either neutral or very slightly warm even after hours of use. In addition, it is also a very quiet laptop.

There was some bloatware that I deleted (I had to look up what was needed or not, since the list was pretty extensive), but like I said before pre-installed apps were pretty bad. I uninstalled nearly everything from the main screen.

Lastly, Kaspersky antivirus program is downloaded as a trial for 30 days. It was nice at first, until every time I closed Google chrome and re-opened it, it stated: "chrome did not close properly, would you like to restore the last session?" This led to the fact that I couldn't even save any Favorites to the browser, because it supposedly didn't shut down correctly, and were deleted when I opened it back up. Well this got me really upset until I realized it was this program. I got rid of it (since it was a trial anyway) and the problem was solved.

I think that's about it, feel free to ask any more questions! Sorry if I wrote way too much, but I believe anyone buying this laptop should know these facts.

Well designed and nicely priced. The processor is nice and fast with the "turbo" feature makes this a great mid level laptop that works as fast as a expensive +$1000.00 laptop. I use it for making music and DJing and I have had NO CRASHES nor problems. I highly recommend this laptop. HDMI port; Three USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0; Start up is very fast! Dual core makes switching programs or working on two programs at once easy and fast. Doesn't heat up to my surprise, you could actually have it on your lap for long periods at a time and does not cause discomfort. The built in speakers are ok for personal use, do not expect it to blow the roof of or fill a living room. Back lit keyboard is nice and can be adjusted to turn off if not in use for "X" amount of time that you tell it to. Battery consumption is ABOUT RIGHT... The Win 8 OS is pretty cool once you get used to the "APP" style of working with the laptop... I recommend not to but the extended warr. with anyone other than SONY since they offer it cheaper and you know it will be good since it is direct... Anyways I recommend this laptop hands down... The product arrived in perfect condition. I have owned Sony Vaio's before and love their aesthetic look and also their functionality, the only con to Vaio's is the fact that they are very fragile so I would recommend it for someone who can actually take a lot of care of them. The operating system is fantastic, windows 8 is better than windows 7 or vista or any other OS you might have seen before. It does have a visual impact at first that might scare a lot of people, but its simple to use once you get used to it. The lack of a start menu is not big deal, the start menu has simply become the metro "app" looking start screen of win 8. Most programs run on a windows 8 view mode, if you do not like that view you can easily switch it over to "desktop mode" (same view as win 7) such as with Google chrome. For some programs where you cant switch such as Skype there are two versions of it, you can have the win 8 version of Skype or the "desktop" version of it. As for speed, the computer, processor and RAM is marvelous. I have not tried playing games on it but my old Sony Vaio ran FEAR 2 and COD so I am pretty sure this new one with higher specs must run it perfectly wit no lag. So far the screen has an amazing resolution, the keyboard feels smooth to the touch, the computer fan is quiet and it does not over heat. I bought this computer for college and it seems it will be simply perfect! This computer is simply marvelous for the price it has!

***EDIT 01/15/13***

The computer had some issues with hardware. It stated it had an error and requested me to restart it to fix the issue. Upon restart it scanned for errors and claimed it was repairing drive (C:). The "repair" started looping. I tried accessing safe mode to try and restore the computer but it would not let me access safe mode. I accessed the settings of the computer and tried resetting the BIOS, but had no results since the looping continued. The only option I had left was a reset to its factory settings which in fact resolved my issue, but I lost all my settings and information.

***EDIT 01/28/13***

Again my computer encountered problems with hardware. This tame when the computer requested a restart it DID scan and repair drive (C:). Upon restart it informed me the problem was some drives and system files from Windows. It seems that the error is not from Sony or with the laptop but rather with Windows 8 drivers. I am currently out of the country and will not return to the USA until August or September, but upon calling Sony they said that once I am in the country I can send the computer in for servicing and they will fix my driver issue. I am planning to buy an extended warranty on this computer just in case to avoid in complications in the future, Sony informed me that I can purchase the extended warranty up until my 11th month of purchase of the laptop. At least this time the error was fixed and the computer did NOT have to be reset to factory settings. I shall continue to update in case any other issues arise or if the issue with the drivers persist.

***EDIT 02/24/2013***

A month has gone by with no issues, no Blue Screen's of Death no driver errors. I removed the error message notification system that came with the Sony computer. I started to realize every single time I had an issue with the computer before happened right after the error message notification system flag popped up. Disabling seemed to solve the issue (now I really do believe it is a problem related to a missing file or some sort of issue with the notifications of errors). I will still send it in to Sony once I am in the USA to get it checked and hopefully fixed so that the computer can run perfectly even when the error message notification system is enabled. I will continue to eidt if any other problems arise or the original problem persists.

When I got this laptop, it was unbelievably awesome! First, I like the color. Instead of black, Sony had multiple colors laid out for customers to choose in their favor. Second, the resolution quality. When I watch movie, I feel like I don't need the blue ray since the quality of the screen is so great! This laptop is also quiet and super fast.

The keyboard is smooth.. I just cannot live without this laptop.

The only thing it needs to be fixed is probably the camera from Windows 8.

Anyway, I have no regret to choose this pink Sony laptop because it seems no different from Mac, and it is lot cheaper.

I bought this laptop from Dell and I got to say it's easily one of the best laptops I've used in my life. This laptop handles multitasking like its nothing, running several programs at once. The i7 technology allows me to run my software developing program while listening to music on youtube and chatting on facebook with no lag while switching between windows.

The 1080p display is just beautiful, I play movies and music videos from youtube and it looks amazing. The display really impressed me.

My favorite part about the laptop I would say is the video card. The AMD Radeon HD 7730M 2GB is not the best graphic card out there, but it's still a really good video card. I've ran several games like The amazing spiderman, Black Ops 2, Assassin's creed, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Darksiders, and many more, and they all run extremely smooth. Some may not run at full FPS on high settings, some do, but they all run very smooth on med settings. The screen size of the laptop itself may be off putting to some gamers, but if you have a big screen TV and an HDMI cable, you can connect the two and get awesome quality on your TV.

In short, here are some of the highlights:

-Super fast i7

-Amazing 1080p display

-Very good graphics card

-Nice speakers

-Boots up in like 10 seconds

-Opens netbeans in like 3 seconds

-Smooth gaming

Some things I didn't like:

-Short battery time. Even on power saver mode it only last about 2-3 hours. I believe its because of the power of the laptop, so be sure to always carry your charger with you.

-A little heavy when compared to one of those lightweight laptops, but not too heavy nonetheless.

To summarize, if you're looking for a powerful laptop at an affordable price, then consider this super powerful computer.

Lets all be honest, the main draw of this machine is the 2gb video card. Dell has failed to update the BIOS to work correctly int he windows 8 environment and as such the video card does not get called if/when it should. You can do a few tricks to force it, but it won't work for games or for video editing.

The only fix I have found was the Catalyst control center, but even then Windows 8 will arbitrarily decide that the software doesn't need to work anymore, along with a myriad of other programs that are needed for most modern games (Steam/Origin/etc). When you can get a game to work and the video card to work too the game will run for a bit, but eventually the hammer will drop and your performance will dip or the game will crash.

If you must buy this laptop, go find a windows 7 version. Dell has no business shipping this as an end user device and microsoft has no business forcing windows 8 to be used when it just plain doesn't work.

This is an excellent Machine, very fast, with Turbo Booster 2.0 auto manage processor speed. I can run multiple tasks without delays excecuting them.

There is a model very similar to this one and almost 200.00 $USD ($736.00)cheaper, for less video and plastic back plate instead of aluminium, and keyboard backlit but more Hard Disk Drive, and 3 pounds less in weight which is very good if you carry your laptop with you. At first I thought I would have bought that one if was listed but now, after using this one I am very happy about this purchase.

No regret so far only:

1-This is advertised as 2.5 GHz, but base processor speed is 2.2GHz and I have seen mine at 2.9GHz with Turbo Booster Monitor.

2-Little heavy, 9 pounds (not really a problem).

3-Touch pad is very sensible but you can be solved with a mouse or some adjusting (not an issue).

4-I did not like, I saw this machine in dell.com website at a higher Price, and came here in blackfriday weekend, I though I bought it in a special Price, but now is lower. There was a psicological trick used to buy it in a hurry and two weeks later was a little cheaper. Not enough for a return but, I feel blackfriday was a trick.

Dell is a very good Brand and the best in Warranty service in my country, that was a very important point in my purchase.

This computer moves very fast, and multitask without delay.

My rate is 4.8 from 5.

I purchased this laptop a few years ago and it was absoulutely awesome! It was listed with Dell as a gaming computer and it was good for games as well as all of the work related things I needed to do. Just under 5 pounds it was pretty easy to tote around when i was on work related trips. This model is the last XPS that Dell made with a 12.1 screen. The dementions of this laptop is a nice "in-between" size: it is a bit bigger than a netbook but also a bit smaller than a laptop with a 13" screen.

This baby has 4 USB ports and that is a bit difficult to find these days. You never think you are going to need all those USB ports until it happens! The hard drive is upgradable to a 500GB if you want to go that high (I upgraded mine to a 320GB and it worked fine. Everyone that saw it loved it! I even had offers to purchase it but I always refused!

Also, not only is it nearly impossible to find a laptop with this size screen, number of USB ports but to have all of this AND it's Core 2 Duo AND it has a CD/DVD+RW drive is a dream come true. The only problem that I had was that the regular battery only lasted two years so I had to buy another one. If that is the only issue with a laptop, I think it's worth it.

So if you want something small, but not to small and you want it to have the capacity to handle all the bells and whistles you may later want to add, this is a perfect choice!

Sony VAIO VPCEA24FM/W Laptop / Intel Core i3 Processor 2.26GHZ Review

The computer is very beautiful and the performance is good (in terms of speed), but I am very disappointed with its overall performance... in just three months of very moderate usage one of the USB ports simply stopped working. Now the Wireless Network simply turns off without a warning from time to time (even when nobody is on the computer, so it is not caused by an accidental touch on the wifi switch). The only way to fix this is by rebooting the computer...

Finally when I tried to get in contact with Technical Support (I live in Brazil), I was told that this is an american computer and I could not get support here. Even when I tried the Sony International website, they divert the message to the useless Brazilian support... this was also very disappointing since one of the advantages the vendor used to convince me to buy this was "the worldwide support given to Sony Vaio".

After having two Toshibas for almost ten years, which never gave me any problem, I bought my first (and SURELY last) Sony computer. There is greater value on other brands on this pricetag.

Bought the laptop during Black Friday sale, so it's been a little over 6 months and only had one issue with it which was mentioned in one of these reviews as a problem (have heard about it from other sources as well). The laptop kicks you off the internet without warning and when this happenes, the wireless button is still in the on position so there is nothing you can do about it but restart the computer.

I have experienced this problem a few times before I got fed up and called Sony tech support where I was told that the sensor which was built into the computer is an industrial strength and the usual internet signals that are used in homes are not engough for the laptop to pick up on. That is when the signal weakens a little, the lapop cannot detect it, and that is when you get kicked off the net.

Tech support also told me to talk to the company where I subscribe for the internet to do a frimware update on the router which I went ahead and done. Then Sony deinstalled an old program and reinstalled the newest one. This was around Christmas and I have not had ANY problems.

Aside from this one issue I had, I did not experience anything negative, in fact I am very satisfied with my laptop and can recommend it to others wholeheartedly.

UPDATE (2012.01.14):

I had to have the laptop set back to factory settings, (basically as I bought it) and I encountered the same problem with the wireless switch and not being able to connect to the internet. I called Sony again, but my 1 year warranty expired and tech support wasn't able to help me without me paying a fee. However, the guy who I talked to was really nice and suggested to install and updated the newest version of the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 driver. I did just that and it worked! So if anyone is having this same issue, go to esupportDOTsonyDOTcom, type in the model of your computer (VPCEA24FM), then click on Wireless LAN, then select Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 Driver, then just download. Once you restart your computer you shouldn't have issues with your wireless connection again. I don't know if amazon will let me post the link, but here it goes:

I purchased this laptop from a big box store, for an amazing price.

It's super fast, doesn't come bloated with the historically bad Sony software all over it, and is a great machine for everyday use.

The pros:

Windows 7 never looked so good

The LCD is crisp and bright

The keyboard is responsive (Even without the number pad, which I'm not missing all that much)

The Blue Ray is great even if the software to run it is so-so.

With 4gb of ram, this puppy hums

The Con:

One major design flaw keeps this from being a 5 star computer. The power/sleep/hibernation button is on the right hand side of the computer, on the top, near the bezel. It is in the PERFECT place to touch it every single time you pick up the computer. In a week, I've put my computer into hibernation at least a hundred times. Not exaggerating, it is EXTREMELY annoying. None-the-less, I'm not returning the computer, not a deal breaker, just a major annoyance.

I'm really impressed with the fit and finish of this laptop. I'm not used to Sony computers being so reasonable, and so well put together.

Big win.

I bought this laptop back in August of 2010 of my senior year in high school. I bought it specifically to last me through my last year in HS and for all four years of my undergrad. There were a few pros and cons that I found with it:

Pros:

-Chiclet style keys: I personally love this style of keys because they aren't annoying while typing and they look great on a laptop.

-Fast processor ( I had an i3, 500GB, 2.26 GHz and 4GB of RAM)

Cons:

-USB ports died one by one

-Memory card slot stopped working.

-The fan noise (this drove me crazy!) I replaced it, cleaned out the dust, and even tried lowering the amount of processes. It was just annoying.

Feels very fragile. The body isn't very durable and it feels like plastic.

I enjoyed the laptop for the first few months that I had it but I decided to move on and get a different laptop. It was fun.

In short: this computer looks cool, is powerful (at least enough for digital art and music making), and is damn cheap.

The cons here would be that, when this thing was refurbished, they must have installed all of the computer's old drivers and such, so for about the first week of usage, whenever the computer was turned on, it always had some driver to configure. This is mostly ironed out now though. I actually bought this instead of the net-book which i was initially considering as this was only a bit more expensive but much more powerful (2.2ghz compared to every netbook's pitiful 1.8ghz more powerful). I really love this thing.

I considered a wide range of ultrabooks, buying this one b4 I could see it, although I did play with the prior Sandybridge version. My biggest hesitations were twofold, based on both on-line reviews of the predecessor and my hands-on playing: 1) so thin that keyboard not great, and 2) poor battery life. I am happy to say that while yes the keyboard is not great for touch-typing, it is largely true you get used to it. It's not nearly as good as my old Lenovo X series, I do still make more typing mistakes, but I think probably just below par for most ultrabooks. On battery life, I am very happy to say it's fine, much better than the predecessor it seems. I can get a good 5+ hours of it doing regular Microsoft Office work and wifi surfing. I have not tested it playing videos though, as I just use my laptop for that.

Other pros: you likely heard the screen is very bright and clear, and it's true. It's also matte, which I prefer. And yes it's just about the thinnest and lightest ultrabook (maybe Toshiba technically beats Series 9 here?). Lastly, I didn't place much importance on looks when choosing, but after I unpacked it, I realised how really gorgeous it is!

Other cons: The need for proprietary ports puts it behind say the HP. I decided that as I almost always use wifi, I can just leave the extra dongles in my travel bag (e.g., VGA dongle to present to clients), so not a big negative to me. Backlighting is only visible in totally dark rooms, not dim rooms, unlike Macbook air or some other ultrabooks. And yes the 128G version seems to largely (or only) come with the Sandisk SSD, which is slower than the competitors. The speed itself doesn't bother me (and I have SSDs in my desktops for comparison), but it has some odd qualities such as getting messed up with some bluetooth mouse due I'm told to the way those mice do I/O and overload it. Net, for most folks not noticeable. Lastly, like many ultrabooks, it comes with a recovery portion of 20G set aside, so if you buy the 128G version, you lose a large percentage of space (if I recall, after Windows you have ~45G for yourself). As I do my own imaging, I have deleted that recovery portion

Net, I am very very happy with my purchase, I researched literally every ultrabook out at the time. The biggest reasons it may not be for you are 1) different aesthetic tastes; 2) it's expensive; 3) limited ports

Have had tons of desktops and laptops in past. Needed a new laptop but this time decided to get something more portable as my typical "desktop replacement" laptops in the past were, in retrospect, a hassle to lug around. Read a great cnet laptop review and decided the 13 inch was the way to go (not too small of a screen, not too heavy of a weight). Got it and love it. The screen is not too small, and if i need to i can zoom in on the touchpad. The weight is perfect. It does NOT get too hot for me as another reviewer suggested. The touchpad is a touch glitchy, but just a touch, and not a deal breaker. Reading the reviews before purchase i planned on getting a mouse, but I wont anymore b/c its not the touchpad isnt THAT bad. I gave Samsung an extra look when it came to laptops b/c of my great smartphone experience, (note 2) and I'm glad i did. OnSale seller did great and got it to me earlier than expected.

So far, in my limited time with this ultrabook, it is indeed among the best I have seen (I checked out UX31A DB51 as well). The good news is that the SSD is upgradeable. Be aware, this laptop uses a mSATA SSD. My perfect laptop would be this one with a 512GB mSATA and SSD performance rivaling my desktops' Vertex 4. Alas, I will wait for SSD prices to continue to drop like a bag of bricks so I can cheaply upgrade the SSD. Right now it looks like Mushkin makes a good 240GB mSATA drive if you have-to-have the fastest SSD.

Bottom line: If you can live without integrated ports and a DVD drive built in this is the Windows equivalent of a Macbook Air essentially, except this comes without all the Apple fan boys and their snottyness. This is indeed an elegantly designed and a well thought out machine; perfect for those who are always on the go.

Update: I have decided to return this laptop for a few reasons:

1) Touchpad drivers are finicky at best (caused Windows 7 to freeze and jump out of Aero mode)and randomly highlights things on the page as you move the cursor.

2) Slow SSD ....at first I thought I could live with this machine having a slow SSD, but I quickly realized that I need a faster drive and I am not willing to spend more money on an already pricey machine. I'd rather go with a cheaper machine and then replace the HDD with a fast SSD, but perhaps the new machine will have lower screen res and weigh a bit more.

3) Lack of integrated ports. In my opinion, I will loose the dongles and/or forget about them at home so it's best to go with an integrated solution rather than use dongles (Eliminates going with the MBA as an option since this too uses dongles).

My bottom line remains the same. This is great for someone who 1)is on the go all the time 2) can live without integrated ports, and is mindful to bring dongles and 3) doesn't mind a slow SSD.

For me, at this price, a slow SSD and finicky touchpad is ultimately the dealbreaker.

I am an owner of a MacBook. Therefore, saying that I have "high standards" when it comes to laptop computing almost goes without saying. I bought this laptop because I needed it for law school, specifically since you cannot download OneNote onto Apple and that program ROCKS (Shame on you Microsoft: Apple users can get almost every Office program but OneNote? Really? Please change this policy immediately).

I digress, so let me get right to the details:

Pros:

-The matte non-glare screen is amazing! I have yet to experience any problems.

-Keyboard is wonderful and incredibly functional for typing.

-Touchpad can be configured to be more OR less sensitive!!! THIS IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT for professional students such as myself who find ourselves from time-to-time accidentally "palm-swiping" the Touchpad while typing. The result is that the pointer would move to another part of the page while typing (causing headaches). The Touchpad is visibly embedded into the computer and that reduces the likelihood that this will happen.

-Easily rivals the Macbook Air for lightness.

-Very intuitive controls (esp. on the keyboard).

-Boots incredibly fast.

-Samsung software can easily configure updates/problems on their proprietary PCs and their support staff has been very helpful thus far.

-Design is STUNNING.

-Does not easily get scratched and has a very nice texture.

-The screen hinge feels great and stays stable.

-An ultrabook in every sense of the word.

Cons:

-Battery life can be improved (but maybe at the cost of how ridiculously light it is).

-Screen brightness could be increased (but this may affect the aforementioned battery life).

-When you close the lid, it can come into contact with the keys, leaving small square-ish marks upon the screen. You won't see this when the screen is on but will be reminded of it once the computer goes to sleep.

-Keyboard keys could be spread out just a few mm (now I am getting nit-picky).

Conclusion:

-If this is within your budget, GET IT.

-If you have a little more to spend or can wait then buy a newer version of this laptop or one with more RAM. Again, as a MacBook owner, I'm blown away by how well Samsung did in putting together a BEAST of an ultrabook.

I am typing on it now. Which brings me to my biggest problem with it. It gets hot. My hands are very very warm right now. Its bearable but much hotter than the 15" Samsung I also am testing. I have the luxury of having both but one at least is going back. I have to buy a few more for business and this is the test.

Right away the size. turned me on. It so small, light and the display quality so much better than the 15". But actually using itits too small. I prefer a larger screen and keyboard. But hey this is the trade. These things are getting so small that perhaps we really have reached the turning point of too bloody small for pratical use. I dont really care what anyone at a cafe thinks I do like to carry less at the airport but the difference in these ultrabooks is not that great. 3lbs or 3lbs .... talk about getting lazy. Hmm the heat is a bit much now. Perhaps stuff is packed to closely for airflow.

My unit (NP900x3c-ao2ca) has a liteon 256gb SSD. Better than the u100 sandisk in the 15" so they say. My test programs showed it to be faster in all. Real life I don't notice a difference. The display is much much better quality than the x4d 15" version. The PLS screen has great viewing angles and blacks be black but with detail view able. Nice but has a mild green hue that I cant seem to dial out. Yes I am splitting hair at this price point. I will say the Apple screens are still better but this one is getting very close. Wifi is still an issue for Samsung. Move away from the router and signal drops faster and more than any of my other devices. It suffers some of the same trackpad issues as the x4d. Trackpad just isnt great. Workable but apple is so smooth why not samsung?

My case is a little out of whack. One corner "swoops" up and stands proud so the unit bounces and doesn't lay completely flat. This bothers me at the price point. The x3c is much more $ than the comparable Mac air. So yes I want it all and perfect too! Plus is the case is out then each time I rest my wrist on it I am flexing the sides .... that's how circuit boards fail.

I got mine on sale. Otherwise I wouldn't have even considered it an these are priced VERY high. THe sale brought it just a little over the mac. Overall is a beautiful machine, snappy, fast boot .... but it does get hot. The fans are not moving as much air as the 15". I must give credit to Samsung as these fans are dead silent ... on both the ultrabooks I have here. The 15" x4d gets warm but never hot. The 13" X3C is getting warmer as I type this review and concerns me as to how it will degrade performance. Or maybe something is blacking airflow? There have been complaints about quality control and general build quality

Backlight is so so. Connectivity is minimal. 2 USB and a network requiring Dongle. and there goes the trackpad .... I was typing and it went crazy once again with false clicks and dragged stuff around. Samsung needs to address this.

Overall a super portable ultrabook that looks great and have a nice display. My problems working with its size are just preference. The other kinks are not total deal breakers but something to consider when paying top dollar. 8mb RAM should be here IMO. 4gb .... not enough as the RAM is soldered to the board and not upgradable. Perhaps they simply couldnt fit more in the package. It is the smallest and lightest computer I have ever used. 2 pounds 7oz.

To have a working computer this small really is an impressive feat.

For roughly 550.00 this can hardly be beat for a small laptop that has windows 8 and a touchscreen. At first I was a little aggravated with the touch pad but, I installed the drivers from Samsung's website that are supposed to be for a series 5 laptop. This laptop along with several others have the same Elan touch pad in them. Once you install this driver it is a night and day difference in the touchpad.

If you have the sorry Asus Smart Gesture installed, uninstall that first and reboot, then install this software. I have had various Macbooks for the better part of the last 7 years and this is my first PC laptop in a while. I was almost ready to return this laptop until I found these drivers. I would say the touch pad is 95% of a Macbook touch pad now and whether you like Apple or not, you have to admit they know what they are doing when it comes to track pads. Aside from all of that I'm extremely happy with the operation of this laptop now.

I am coming from a laptop that had an SSD drive in it so it does seem a little slow in some areas but, others it is working just fine. I have an extra SSD drive that I plan on putting in this machine as well as removing the half height mini PCI atheros wireless/bluetooth combo. I purchased an Intel Centrino 6235anhmw Mini Pci Express Bluetooth 4.0 to replace it with and based on my research I should be able to enable Intel Wireless Display on this laptop after that install. The card only cost me 30.00 bucks and I figured it was worth the gamble to see if it would work. I'll update this review once I get the card in a couple of days to state if it worked or not.

The sound coming from this laptop is actually quite good and I would say better than a lot of the previous laptops I am use to.

The touchscreen is extremely responsive and I haven't had any missed touches or erratic behavior out of it. I have played several touch based games and it worked flawlessly.

Last but, not least this thing is solid, the build quality on it is exceptional for something this cheap.

Okay, now for the bad which again considering this is a cheap laptop with a touchscreen really isn't that bad.

The fan runs constantly and while it is not overly annoying it does seem to run even when not doing much on the system. That is really my main complaint about the machine at this point. The second complaint is that the viewing angles on this machine are pretty poor but, again don't expect any machine at this price point with a touchscreen to have great viewing angles. Although viewing angles are bad, brightness is very good. I think with the brightness turned all the way up you could possibly do permanent damage to your eyes(a joke of course).

The keyboard is a little cramped but, really not all that bad. I would say I have slightly above average hand size but, again it isn't to bad and I'm able to kick out a reasonable speed without to many more mistakes than I usually make. Expect some adjustment if you are coming from a full size keyboard with large hands.

Again, the stock hard drive is a 5400rpm drive and it does seem a little slow for me but, if you are coming from another mechanical drive then you may not really notice it as a problem. I've been using SSD drives for some time so it does bother me a bit.

These might be major problems for others but, for me they are minor annoyances that I can live with on a cheap machine like this. This is basically an 11.6" Macbook Air that is missing the SSD(entry level is 64GB SSD), backlit keyboard, viewing angles aren't as good for the ASUS and fan runs more often than Macbook Air. However the Macbook Air doesn't have these features: touch screen, 500GB HDD that can be upgraded to a small or large SSD if you like and the Air cost about 450.00 more for the entry level. Granted the Macbook Air is considerably lighter but, it also makes your wallet lighter.

Sorry for all of the Macbook comparisons but, I have come from many years of having Macbooks and decided with Windows 8 to give PCs a try again. I'm glad I did.

Update 11/8/2012:

I installed the Intel wireless card I mentioned above, then installed the latest drivers for the card from the Intel website as well as the latest video drivers from the ASUS website. Then I installed the Widi display software and was able to connect to my Belkin Screencast. It took several tries and then it finally updated the software on the Belkin. After that it has been connecting perfectly with no problems. So I paid 40 bucks on Amazon for a refurbished Belkin Screencast and 32.00 for the intel card. Now for 72.00 bucks I'm able to use my 55" HDTV at 1080p as a second screen.

Update 11/14/2012

I finally got around to installing an SSD drive and replacing the mechanical drive. The drive that came in it was a Hitachi HTS5450A7E380 which is a 7mm thick drive. Unfortunately the SSD I had was a typical 9.5mm and was too thick to work at first. Luckily I was able to remove part of the casing on the SSD drive I used and that made for a perfect fit. So if you plan on swapping out for an SSD make sure it is no thicker than 7mm or it won't fit. I had some trouble where the laptop kept booting into the BIOS. when I went in and disabled fast boot as well as turned of drive security or something like that. I can't remember exactly now but, when the option is enabled you can go further into the BIOS and see PKI keys and DDB keys and a lot of other keys. I just disabled that portion and then it started recognizing the hard drive. This may not be a problem if you clone the hard drive to the SSD before you swap but, I did a fresh install. Laptop is blazing fast now as it boots into windows in about 10 seconds.

This review is to dispel any incorrect info in the "User Reviews".

I'll quickly explain that I am a technician and have been modifying all the non touch Win 8 machines, to look and run like 7. It's a 2 minute job that requires a small program like Classic Shell or iobit's Start 8.

As I give tech advice on some forums, I felt the need to get some experience on Win 8's touch interface, Otherwise, how could I help others, if I've never even used it.

So let's get down to business and set the record straight of what it is, and what it isn't.

WIFI

Those folks who have wifi connectivity problems, have a defect. If they reinstall the OS from the partition that is provided for that purpose, and then it still has wifi problems, then it's time to return the machine or get it fixed, or even get another wifi card. Anyone who thinks that it's inherent to this machine and has decided to put up with it, is mistaken and being inconvenienced unnecessarily.

TOUCHPAD

Those who find that the touchpad is wonky, are either palming it while typing, or have a defect. The same applies as above. Try installing the OS again and if it is still acting up and you're 100% sure that you're not palming the touchpad, then it is defective and needs to be returned or repaired. This is NOT a normal condition.

BUILD & SCREEN

This laptop is well built with premium quality materials. Anyone who feels their screen is weak, should return it. It is NOT a normal condition for this machine, and for those who complained about the bezel being too wide, it is built that way to be structurally strong enough. A touchscreen receives light impact from being touched, thus it needs to be built a bit more solidly than a normal screen.

Complaints about the screen being shiny are valid in a sense. It is truly shiny, but it's a necessary evil. Matte surfaces get dirty faster and are harder to clean.

KEYBOARD

The keyboard is neither exceptionally good or bad. Everyone has a different concept of what a keyboard should be, so there's no right or wrong. It's just an individual's preference. If the keyboard doesn't work perfectly, the machine should be returned or repaired.

BATTERY LIFE

We've heard a wide range of claims, from 2 to 7 hours. Obviously, someone is wrong. Most of the User Reviews, have it straight, when they claim approx. 4 hours. Even if you dimmed the screen and avoided multitasking, you'd still be hard pressed to get 5 hours out of it, and it's unrealistic to expect that, as the screen would be hard to see, at that low brightness. Those who have claimed 3 hours or less, may be running power consuming programs, like watching video/movies at full brightness, in which case, it is 100% true that it will only get 3 hours or less, under those conditions.(See Suggestions below for some revised info)

CAMERA

Yes, it is true, that it's horrible. If you are not in a brightly lit area, the image will be grainy. It is certainly way below the quality of the average laptop webcam.(see SUGGESTIONS below for a revised evaluation)

POWER & SPEED

Those who find that this notebook is slow, or it hesitates/stutters or freezes up, have a defect. Redo the system as mentioned above and if it persists, it is a defective machine. Even with all the bloatware running, this Vivobook has ample power, to handle all the normal use, without ever hesitating or freezing up.(See SUGGESTIONS below for additional info on power plans for better performance)

SSD

Yes it is true that it will be substantially faster and more responsive, if you swap out the hard drive for an SSD. Any and all laptops will benefit, but it is not necessary to swap the hard drive out, as it performs just fine as it is. It's a luxury to go with an SSD. I have swapped the HD out for an SSD in this machine, because I wanted to know how much of a difference it would make, and not because it ran poorly with the included 500 gig hard drive.

While on this subject, those who feel that it is difficult to remove the backplate to access the hard drive, are mistaken. Yes, it is firmly in place and it requires the right tool to pry it apart, but that is entirely normal for almost all laptops. Swapping out the hard drive on this unit, is a breeze.

FINGERPRINTS

I got lucky and received the Silver model (looks like champagne to me) as the silver lid does not show fingerprints as much as the black version. Again, this is normal. Black brushed aluminum laptops, are fingerprint magnets and they need to be cleaned everyday.

VALUE

The sum total of this Vivobook's exceptional build with premium materials, slim and light, great performance, decent battery life, all the necessary ports, good wifi reception and a very decent touchscreen, make it a real bargain at $500 or less.

COMMENTS, CONS & COMPLAINTS

The webcam is very poor.

It would be wonderful to have a backlit keyboard, even though it would shorten the laptop's battery life.

This unit is slow to charge. From bone empty, it may take as long as 4 hours to get to 100%. This may inconvenience some folks (not me), but on the positive side, the internal battery may last several more years than if it were fast charged.

A few users have suggested changing graphics setting to -20 brightness, 51 contrast and 0.9 gamma, and I agree that it looks better that way.

I ran a timer since turning the laptop on at 100% charged and it is now up to 2 hours and 7 minutes, having used 44% of its battery life, so that would come out to a potential 4 hours and 48 minutes, however the machine will shut down before reaching 0%, and it should be noted that I was only running this webpage and the timer, nothing else, so it would be unrealistic to expect that much battery life under normal circumstances.

The Win 8 touch interface is vastly superior to iOS (iPad), Android, webOS or any after market ones. It is true that the store does not have very many apps, but that will come with time. You'd be hard pressed to find any high quality free games, so don't get your hopes up, YET!

SUGGESTIONS

1) Download an app called "Show Me", which will give you detailed visual explanations of everything you can do in Win 8's touch interface. Even if you think you know it all, I bet you'll learn a few new things.

2) Clean the screen around the webcam area and you may discover (as I just did) that the camera is a lot better than it was, presumably a bit dirty from top of the screen swipes.

3) If your machine hesitates, stutters or freezes while on battery but performs well when plugged in, you may have to change your power plan to "High Performance". The Power4Gear system, halves the CPU, ram graphics and Wifi power. If you do go to High Performance while on battery, you may want to turn down the brightness a bit, so as to improve battery life.

4) If you use the Powe4Gear power plan while on battery, it is possible to reach 5 hours of usage, provided you are not running many processes in the background, and are not playing games or viewing video.

5) After updating your Vivobook with Asus' Live update program, uninstall it, to stop it running in the background (it can't be stopped otherwise). If you need it again in the future, you can download the installer from the Asus website.

6) If you run Windows Defender, there is no need for any additional Anti Virus programs, as Defender in Win 8, is a full Anti Virus program that is reputed to do as good a job as any other free AV program. If you are running another AV program, either uninstall it and use Defender, or keep it and turn Defender off in "Services". Running both at the same time will seriously slow down your computer.

I'm an IT professional, and have dealt with a few ASUS laptops, which I now prefer to Dell.

If you take remove the 9 phillips screws on the bottom, you have access to some of the internal components.

You will need to tug a little, as the case is still held in place by little plastic clippies all around.

You might break a nail, so be careful.

MEMORY:

The memory is soldered into the board, so 4GB is all you will ever have. Period.

DISK DRIVE:

The HDD is a Hitachi HTS5450A7E380 (7mm 2.5") and can be replaced with another "Low Profile" 7mm SSD or HDD. You simply remove 3 screws that hold the cage in (the 4th screw is already removed from removing the back panel), remove the cage, remove 4 screws holding drive in cage, replace with a SATA II/III drive. (It is a SATA 3 6.0 GB/s connection).

I recommend the Samsung 840 series, as they are 7mm 2.5" and very low on power usage. When you remove the old HDD, it has a plastic backing glued on it with two rubber foam strips.

Don't worry with removing it from the old HDD. An SSD doesn't need the shock absorption and will be mounted securely with the screws.

WIRELESS:

The Atheros AR5B225 Half Mini PCIe WiFi/Bluetooth 4.0 module is replaceable.

I am replacing mine with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 so I can use WiDi and Dual Band Wifi.

It was as easy as removing the two antenna wires from the Atheros, popping in new card, reattaching two antenna wires to the Intel 6235.

BATTERY:

The 5136 mAh 2 cell battery is replaceable, albeit proprietary. Not sure what this means for the future.

MY GENERAL OPINION OF THE LAPTOP and Windows 8:

I have been using Windows 8 at work for a bit, and as an OS, it's hard and confusing with a dual monitor desktop power user setup (as I have no need for the Metro interface there, and I feel like I'm fighting it). I had to tweak it to get my start menu back (Open source utility called "Classic Start"). However, with a touch screen laptop, it is very easy to use. I've been thoroughly been enjoying it as a tablet replacement. I admit, I did install an SSD in it, and it is SO much more responsive now (and shaved some ounces on weight as well has dropping at least a watt of power draw). I also have access to a Windows 8 volume license key, and mine is running Windows 8 Enterprise.

The form factor, specs, and cost all made the Vivobook a product that I was excited to have and to recommend to whoever I came across. Of course, the highlight was the touchscreen which is VITAL if you're using Windows 8. Adding to that was the excellent workmanship (metallic palmrest) and the perfect size and weight (liked it better than the Zenbook or MacBook Air).

But less than 2 months later, it all turned into a nightmare.

I can give the conclusion from the very beginning: Swap out the 500GB HDD for a 256GB SSD as soon as you take it out the box. I'm convinced that Asus put in a cheap part (HDD) in order to keep the cost low. But you will pay dearly for that error.

1. During normal usage, the dreaded "Click of Death" came, which is when the head/arm in the HDD touches the platter (disk). I tried to shut it down as soon as possible. But the next time it turned on, the OS wouldn't load and only the BIOS screen would appear. The machine was effectively dead.

2. Asus's warranty would replace the HDD but wouldn't recover the data, all while taking 2 weeks to return the machine to you. And just opening the machine to swap the HDD yourself would void that warranty.

3. Upon opening the HDD, I found that the head was defective (after just 2 months) and tried everything to recover the data. The pros would charge approx $2,400 (no exageration) to repair this kind of HDD problem. After 3 days, this became a lost cause and I knew I'd have to start from scratch.

4. I installed a 256GB SSD.

5. Asus wouldn't give me an ISO image of the factory Vivobook. They told me I also had to get the OS from Microsoft directly, who in turn said they couldn't get me a full version Windows 8, but only an upgrade from Windows 7. This meant I had to install Windows 7 first, then upgrade to Windows 8.

Now I'm stuck because the BIOS won't let me set the boot order to the USB drive. And, yes, I've flashed it to version 206. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS, PLEASE COMMENT.

In spite of all the headache, my only advice is to swap for a SSD immediately. 95% of my docs were backed-up but I didn't make an ISO image of the whole system, so I'm paying for it.

In the end, I still think this is a good machine which just had 1 cheap part which went bad very quickly. (BTW, the floor model at the store also had the same problem.)

Firstly, some reviewers have referred to this laptop as a netbook. I have nothing against netbooks, but this is actually an ultraportable notebook. In fact, if it had even a hybrid SSD it would meet ultrabook specs. It certainly has the build quality of an ultrabook.

The good:

As I said, excellent build quality including the very responsive touchscreen. People have been guessing that I must have paid at least $800 for this machine based on its look and feel alone. It looks and feels like something between a Macbook Air and Pro.

Remarkably thin considering that it has built in VGA and ethernet ports, and yes, some people still need those!

It's fast. Obviously with a Core i3 and 4GB of RAM it's not the most powerful device on the market, but if you're not a gamer or into heavy multimedia editing it runs like a breeze. It boots up faster than ANY computer I have ever seen not equipped with an SSD. I guess Windows 8 is to thank for that.

Speaking of Windows 8, this is a review of the machine not the OS, but I'll just say that it's basically Windows 7 with a better start menu and some handy touched based functionality. On a touchscreen device like this one, I don't see any reason to complain about it.

Incredibly compact power cable. No brick. It's like a tablet charger. You can literally coil it up and carry it in your pocket.

The Bad:

Battery life is indeed about 4-5 hours... that is, with careful power management and light use. Not stellar, but I guess it does deliver the "up to 5 hours" promised.

A little heavy for its size, certainly not so much to be tiring to carry.

Some reviewers have complained about the trackpad. I haven't updated any drivers and I don't find it to be terrible by any means, but it can be a hair too sensitive at times, sometimes registering a single tap as a double.

Overall:

I'd actually give it a 4.5 if I could. I've looked into a lot of alternatives, and I don't believe there is currently a better laptop for under $600 on the market right now. Certainly not in the 11.6" form factor, where the alternatives are either netbooks of inferior build quality and specs, or an ultrabook/Macbook Air for hundreds of dollars more.

We have two of these. This is a good computer, IF you are not going to rely on the touchscreen.

The touchscreen is not very responsive and not always accurate. I thought perhaps these computers are all like this until we bought a Sony All-In-One. Although SONY has poor customer service, the touchscreen is very responsive, not as good as iPad, but quite useable.

The ELO Touchscreen utility that comes with the Samsung can't do much with the sensitivity of the touchscreen. You have to push down quite hard and sometimes hold it briefly for it to work. It is a TOTAL DRAG to use the touchscreen; you will probably never use it again after trying it for one minute.

The LED screen is super thin and beautiful. However, you cannot raise the monitor; you can only alter the angle of the monitor.

Like the all-in-one design and space saving feature it offers. Not a big fan of the touchscreen feature (Windows 7), but I'm old school...still like the mouse/keyboard option. Only issue unresolved is that it loses internet connectivity when the PC goes into sleep mode; this may be a simple adjustment in the power settings but I haven't explored this yet. Overall, satisfied with the product. Seems well built, hope to get a few years out of it.

Usually I go with Asus for PC laptops. I'm replacing my MacBook Pro (I just don't need a Mac) and had two major requirements... an i7 Intel processor and 8G of RAM minimum. This system matched those easily.

There is a similar version of this laptop that has a Blue Ray burner instead of the DVD-RW, a much better graphics card (with 2G onboard RAM...), and an SSD boot drive with a 5400RPM regular drive (instead of just the 5400 regular drive). It was a little over $900. None of these were things I absolutely needed so I opted for the savings.

I have one qualm which docked it a star. The colors on the monitor are a bit muted. Its brightness, clarity, and so forth are all great, but the contrasts aren't as good. Then again, I am almost always hooked up to a dual monitor (which I haven't tested yet) instead of using the laptop monitor so I don't care quite as much, and movies still look fine, but don't expect the screen to be something fabulous.

The one thing that almost kept me from buying the system was its form factor. I was afraid from the pictures that it was going to be bulky and ugly. I have been pleasantly surprised, it is sleek. The weight is very well balanced, the keyboard is very comfy (and full size), the touch pad is well placed (I'm not having any palm problems).

In so far as speed, absolutely no problems there at all.

I really like this system, and am looking forward to a good long run with it.

The other reviewer was upset that the specifications "did not match" the computer. As for speed, the processor runs "normally" at 2.4 GHz with turbo boost of speeds up to 3.4 GHz. I agree that the speed may be misleading, but it's important to note that with mobile processors, the speed difference is employed to help prolong battery life and only deliver the 3.4 GHz performance when absolutely needed.

As for the hard drive only being reported as 688 GB when it is supposed to be 750 GB, there are 2 things probably affecting thisFirst, there is probably a hidden recovery partition and Windows won't report that as part of the drive. Second, Windows reports drives using powers of 1024 whereas drive manufacturers us powers of 1000 to report drive size. As an example, my computer has a 750 GB drive, but Windows only reports it as 654 GB. The recovery partition is using 29 GB and the remainder is accounted for by the "math error" that is manifested by the 2 different methods of calculating drive size. If you do a search for why the difference in reported hard drive sizes, you will find many articles that will explain this more clearly.

I've had mine for 2 months and am very pleased with it. Purchased it specifically to run Dragon Dictation, which requires a great deal of memory to run smoothly ~ never freezes, and I've never even used more than 35% of it's operating capacity... even running all of my programs at once.

Overall, it's a wonderful computer. The keyboard is very nice, the screen is great, I really like that I have physical buttons to press down by the mousepad, shortcut keys are nice, windows I'm still adjusting to, but over-all great computer. There is no scroll feature on the mousepad, so that is kind of a let down. At first I was unsure if I wanted to go with this computer because of the screen resolution, but that hasn't really been a problem. The size is perfect, honestly. I don't think that the computer could be a better fit. It is a little heavy, but it's a full metal case, so that was expected. Also, I have noticed that I don't hit the shift key every single tie that I try to create a capital letter. That is one thing about this computer that I don't like. Even though the layout of the keyboad is nice, I have noticed that I need to put a little more pressure on the keys than what I am accustomed to doing. This is something I think most people need to adjust to when they get a new computer... Also, entirely my own fault so this is a warning to anyone that gets a computer through toshiba. When you turn the computer on for the first time, you need to go through the registration process where you type in all of your personal information, model number etc. Don't mess that up. It sounds like common sense, but I miss-typed one letter in my email, and I had try to figure out how to fix that by getting the ring around with Toshiba. Part of the problem was, at the time, I didn't know what my personal problem was with the computer, just that something went wrong in the registration. I was on the phone for literally hours before I finally figured it out and got the appropriate help. Moral of the story, if you don't know what the problem, then the help service isn't going to be incredibly helpful because they don't really fine tune the problems while on the phone. Don't make the stupid mistake I made and fill in the wrong registration information (duh, but it happens.

I've had this for a week now and I still love it.

The touchscreen is responsive and the keyboard is also nice.

The speed of its boot up is unbelievable as well as the speed of the entire computer.

Very light and has a nice sleek-look.

The Intel i7 really showcases the power of this laptop.

The battery life is also excellent in terms of its usage of power. I get about consistent 4-6 hours of battery when in web browsing or watching a video.

It also has a protective HD, which means if you drop this laptop, the most important files would automatically be saved and restored!

Let me start with the good:

So awesome. Great OS, fabulous improvements to the existing line bumping up the processor speed and adding the thunderbolt port. This is my second MacBook. The first one I had was a 2006 model, not the Pro. I fell in love with it. This one has had the same effect. I had upgraded my old MacBook to Lion, so I kind of knew what I was getting, but hadn't been able to enjoy some of the awesome new multi-touch features. The improvements to the OS have been relatively gradual, but substantive. The feel of this machine compared to the old MacBook is far superior. The Unibody construction is solid, sleek and beautiful. It is everything I'd hoped it would be from a look and feel standpoint, but somehow a bit more sturdy.

For the not so good, I got the stock screen which is VERY glossy. I mean ... REALLY glossy. It's still beautiful and has better color reproduction than I could ever expect from a notebook. The reflectiveness of the display is only a minor inconvenience if you work in a controlled-lighting environment like me (I prefer it dark) or if you can crank up the brightness.

My real problem with it? The statement of 7 hour battery life is not just mere exaggeration -it's a lie. I challenge anyone to show proof that through anywhere near normal use can get more than 2.5 hrs out of it. I've got the brightness all the way down to just one notch above 'off' and the keyboard backlight off. The first full charge of this battery got me only about 2 full hours. Enabling the battery timer is useless. The "Time remaining" goes from 4 hours plus to less than 2 hours over the span of about 10 minutes. It's a joke. It's so bad that I'm thinking I only got half a battery or something.

I have an extended battery on a Dell notebook that gives me 7.5 hrs of regular use, and had an extra "slice" battery that attached to a Compaq elitebook that gave me 7-8 hrs. I know what 7 hrs of battery looks like. This ain't it.

My only other complaint is that it gets really hot. There's a reason they aren't called laptops. :-)

If you buy this don't go into it expecting 7 hrs of battery life, and you'll be perfectly satisfied.

All that being said, I think I'm done buying Windows PCs.

UPDATE:

With the help of some responders to my original review, I am seeing much better results from the battery close to 5 hrs + of normal use. Leaving the original text of the review intact, but updating the rating to the 5 stars the product deserves. I'm extremely satisfied. Very happy Mac owner. :-D

I researched this purchase EXTENSIVELY via Amazon, Best Buy, other retailers, and my local university (with educational pricing for staff/students/faculty). In the end, I ended up purchasing this machine from Best Buy as the price was the same and I had a line of credit (although I had to pay tax: hey, someone has to help pay for our roads, right?)

In short, I can't say enough positive things about this purchase. This machine is INCREDIBLY fast, the interface is slick (although it takes some getting used to coming from the Windows world especially window minimizing and the function keys), and with an iPhone 4S and iPad 2, iTunes syncing is a DREAM compared to Windows (on purpose, El Steve?).

The screen is plenty big (if you're waffling between 15" and 17", go to a local Best Buy or Apple Store and play around with each the 17" has better resolution, but lift them up and check the weight I prefer the 15" for portability and weight, but you're choice will depend on use), and I ordered the 8GB memory package from Amazon (which should show up any day now). Regarding memory I will say: 4GB is just enough; the OS and apps eat up just about every bit, so I'm looking forward to 8GB.

The backlit keyboard is a dream to type on, the magnetic charger is kid-proof, and the multi-touch trackpad alone is well worth the price (I'm a big fan of the two-finger "reverse scrolling", the back-and-forth swiping in Safari is SO convenient, and the 3/4 finger swiping to bring up LaunchPad and the like is great).

My sole complaint is the lack of USB ports, but only because I'm using a Logitech M305 wireless mouse. If I had a true Mac-compatible Bluetooth mouse this wouldn't be an issue, but in hooking up an external USB drive for Time Machine backups (a Western Digital 2TB) and the Logitech dongle, I'm out of USB ports when I have to sync my iPhone or iPad. But hey, with everything else being incredibly integrated, I'm not complaining THAT much.

Taking and syncing videos and pictures via my iPhone (the local Christmas parade!) is flawless, and iTiVo is a must for those with TiVos.

Regarding apps, take a look at Moom, Alfred, DaisyDisk, AppTrap (for uninstalling apps), and Handbrake.

I may end up getting the Applecare plan (part # MD012LL/A), but if I do, I'll get it elsewhere ($244 from other sites vs. $335 from Amazon, just do a search on Google Shopping for the aforementioned part number).

In summary, this machine is already making my life easier with regard to home pictures and video, expanding my family's use of our iPad, and backups. Good-bye Windows, Hello Mac!

I've been maintaining/repairing computers for ten years but the product that has made a huge impact on my life is the Mac. After working with Windows NT, 98, 2000, and XP. I'm glad that I was introduced to the Mac line when the White/Black Macbook was just coming out. Since then, once you go Mac, you can't go back.

Apple is a great company, many people think they've overrated and overcharge for their products. The main product you're paying premium for is their operating system and customer support. The operating system is what makes the Mac run so smoothly and safely. You can see the OS works very well with the right specifications, and worry free in regards to getting a virus. How often do you hear about a Mac user running into a virus issue, rarely.

I've worked with the old Macbook Pro 15" with the i7 Dual Core. This is a huge upgrade from that, it has a performance score twice as much as last years model. This is one of the latest processor in a laptop market today. This is an i7 Quad Processor, and of course I am happy that this is an Intel processor and not AMD. I upgraded to Corsair 8GB 1333mhz Ram. Together with the processor makes this a great buy for multitasking.

The screen is very reflective. When I use this outdoor it proves a problem to see and I end up squinting at times. But if you're majorly using the screen indoor (like I do), you will only see how beautiful this screen lights up. It's really instant on thanks to being LED and you can see how thin that screen is. The resolution on this Macbook is a big improvement over the last years model as well, thanks to the 1GB graphic card.

Now you're probably wondering, why I mention this Macbook is for everything. Three simple reasons, it has the graphics card (1GB) that can make it do the most intensive graphic program, we've reached the time when programs are being made for both Windows and Mac, and lastly it can have Windows 7 installed as well.

The graphics has amazed me. I've played Starcraft 2, Day of Defeat Source, Team Fortress 2, and Grand Theft Auto IV on high settings. I even can play Battlefield 3 as well while on Medium setting and the quality is beautiful (installed on Windows). The graphics card plays an additional role in the speed of the computer. You can have a great processor and a large amount of ram. But when it comes to watching HD videos, video editing, or playing games, the graphic card has to be good a well. 1GB I guarantee you will have plenty and is just on par with a desktop gaming computer. Most games that are graphic intensive recommends 1GB, looks like this Macbook is prepared!

Many people say, "Mac's are not made for gaming". You can definitely prove them wrong now, you have a 1GB card and that saying is old now. There are many games out available for Mac and they work stunningly great on it. I am surprise myself that Battlefield 3 ran so great! You can get AutoCad, Photoshop, and so much more. But if there's a certain window product you need to install, well here's my third reason.

You now can feel like you paid for TWO laptops and operating systems, thanks to Boot Camp.

You can install Windows 7 on this laptop thanks to boot camp. Just hold down the ALT key upon boot up after you install it and choose either Mac or Windows to use. Apple has a built in program that walks you through it just like turning on a computer. It's so simple. you'll have Windows 7 on this laptop in an hour, thats how long it took me. Thanks to having Windows installed, I can install any program I want. This has a 750GB hard drive so there is a large amount of space for both OS. This Macbook is now definitely made for everything.

Sorry to say but the battery life is not the rated seven hours unless you plan to only do word documents, light internet surfing, and brightness all the way down. If you play games, browse the web heavily, socialize, webcam, and brightness all the way up, you'd get most likely 3-4 hours only. This is ok for me because I can adjust accordingly of how much power I need. If I'm in class, I'll be having my brightness level down and the battery can last long just fine. As for gaming, I'll make sure to be at a desk and with my power adapter handy. Battery life doesn't affect me whatsoever, and comparing Mac to other 15.4 inch laptops, the Mac has a great power management built in the OS that makes sure it uses next to no battery usage while on standby.

Overall for the price, you're not paying for just the cool factor of Apple, but for the customer support as well. If you have a problem with the Mac, there's a Genius Bar in the Apple Store there with experts to help you out. Within the first year after purchasing it's free help. Even after the one year they will not mind taking a look to see what the problem is. But with warranty, whatever problems occur they will help you step by step and take the right actions to make sure you leave the Apple Store satisfied in solving your problem.

I do not work for Apple, but if I did I'm sure I'd enjoy sharing my experience with why Mac is far more superior at Windows. I used Windows for years but a Mac is so much easier to use in comparison, I've converted many of my family/friends into using it, and they now feel the same way I do about what their next laptop should always be.

I got my first MacBook Pro in 2006. It worked like a dream and I could not have had a better computer on which to complete a PhD. At that time there was iLife with iWeb so I could launch a website instantly having created a dot mac (later Me) account. It worked tremendously until about 2010, after which I foolishly decided to trade it in for a souped up second hand model (thought of as a cheap MBP upgrade) that was unfortunately coming from non authorised apple repairers and was faulty. I've learned my lesson. With the new MBP I purchased Apple Care almost as soon as I got the machine extending its authorised warranty service for 3 years.

So now I'm typing this on the new MBP. I have noticed that the battery does not really seem to last 7 hours. In a way, it charges up worryingly fast to seem to retain charge. The sound (I mean videos and multimedia) is simply not as loud as the previous MBP, maybe the loudspeakers are less powerful. My iPhone 4S seems to be louder than this (when not connected to external sound systems). The default screen is glossy though you can get a matte. I just have to say it is too glossy and the default should be a matte screen with the option for gloss. The glossy screen would prevent its adequate use in full sunlight and I have to put up with my reflection. I have since fitted a Moshi iVisor that helps considerably.

Significant improvements to the last MBP include the improved magsafe connector the wires of which do not get frayed and exposed due to stressful kinks between the plug and the power cord; the new design prevents kinking by keeping the cord straight. The unibody feels nice and rigid and keeps itself cool without the loud fan of the previous MBP. It is now very much more solid and silent as it works. You can't even hear the hard disk, so it feels like it has a SSD.

For its price, this computer is not worth it. My old MBP was considerably cheaper and Apple have really jacked up the price. The amount of RAM in the standard model (4GB, 8 would have been better) even with 750GB hard disk does not seem sufficient for the price.

The software is more troubling: The problem is the reduced iLife capability such as killing iWeb and issues with OS Lion. With OS lion, I just don't understand Mission Control, it seems to be a useless gimmick. The updated Safari browser works a lot worse than before, I can never seem to get the window I want (e.g., in the past when I opened Safari naturally it launched on the home screen, then you changed window and if you started a new window it would retain the same window, but the control of these windows is now much diminished). Features like Spaces and Stacks are also gimmicky. Each time I start the computer it reopens the software I took pains to shut down at the end of the last session. Disabling this does not seem to work. It constantly seems to open iCal even though I don't want it to do so. This process of reopening a great deal of software makes the booting up very slow. Ironically, the booting up speed is not faster than my old MBP, it may even be slower.

This MBP, if you want the bells and whistles such as 16GB of RAM (installable yourself), Apple Care warranty protection, leaving aside cosmetic externals like a hard shell or an antireflective screen will set you back an additional $750 approximately. That makes this computer about as expensive as they come. Of course these two features are optional, though perhaps a lower price with an iWeb type capability may have helped.

As for the future, I don't think an MBP without a CD/DVD drive would be very useful in the much anticipated upgrade (as rumoured). The improved IvyBridge chip will excite techies though will really jack up the price even more. I am very pleased with this MBP overall and will just end up spending far more money than is justified.

I needed a new laptop and got the Mac because of I wanted a Unix based system for programming. I've been dual-booting into Linux for too long and though Linux is outstanding, many softwares do not have a Linux version (don't get me started).

It's been 3 weeks with the new Mac and so far I am very pleased with my purchase. However, there are certain things that the Mac is missing which seem like daily necessities to me. It would seem that Apple purposely left them out in a snobbish attempt to establish "the Mac is different".

Depending on the kind of person you are and your usage type, these may or may not be a deal breaker for you.

1. It does not have a standard uninstaller. Coming from Linux's package managers, this is absolutely disappointing. You may have heard that uninstallation is as easy as trashing the app but I wish that were true. Some apps leave files scattered on your hard disk which are hard to find and trash for even a fairly tech savvy person. There are 3rd party softwares, free and not, which can do the job for you but didn't you already pay a premium for buying the Mac?

2. It does not have built-in read-write (r/w) NTFS support. That means if you have an external NTFS formatted drive or a PC that you are sharing with the Mac, you can't persist anything there. Again, compared with the built-in NTFS r/w support in Linux, this seems to be soooo year 2000. There are 3rd party softwares that do this, of course, for a cost.

3. The laptop keyboard does not have a DEL key, only BACKSPACE (called delete, go figure). You can Fn + delete to delete but I'd think delete is quite a commonplace functionality to be missed out.

4. It does not have HOME or END keys either. You can control + A for home and control + E for end but frankly, do you really want to remember all these shortcuts?

I work on computer programs for a living and have figured out ways to work around the above problems. IMHO, not everyone may be willing or able to do that. The graphics and aesthetic is beyond cool but PCs can boast of that too.
