Best Dell Latitude D620 Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz 1GB 60GB DVD±RW 14.1" XP Deals
This is a fairly good laptop which runs smoothly on Windows XP. However, the display clock and date does not update automatically. It stays on the last date and time the laptop was used. If you want it to keep an accurate time and date you have to reset the time each time you boot the laptop. Also, the speaker ceases occasionally and if you must enjoy the sound you need to short down and re-start the laptop again. It stays permanently on the dining table where the whole family uses it for all sorts of things, read emails, play You Tube Clips, do home work, etc. On a general note, the machine gives value for the cheap price paid for it.

Cheap Hewlett Packard G7-1318DX Dual-Core A4-3305M Accelerated Processor
I can truly say that I'm really happy that I made the purchase and the Seller was awesome! This HP laptop has excellent graphics and the sound is very good on it! I made the purchase because I already own an HP 15.6 inch laptop and I just wanted this one as a back up for that one and I really like 17 inch screens because everything is bigger and brighter...lol. I really enjoy it, it's built very well and it's similar to my other HP. The battery life is fine and I have absolutely no complaints. I am so glad that I bought it because HP along with Acer in my opinion makes really good computers! You will not go wrong with purchasing this HP G7-1318DX Dual-Core A4-3305M Laptop!

would be nice if they had sent a start up disk along with the unit. Norton either was attacked or just stopped working and now the computer is full of viruses. Tried several things to clean it up but at this point it is too far gone for that to work. the only option now is to reboot the OS and manage connections much better.Got an email back from. Review of Lenovo IdeaPad 088525U Notebook PC - Core i3 i3-330UM 1.20 GHz
This is a great product, but be aware that most of the product details listed on the Ideapad U460 page are actually for the Ideapad U460s a different computer in the series that is not yet released, but has better processing and battery life capabilities (like the ones mentioned in the description). Find a U460-specific description on Lenovo's official webpage.
The screen brightness will adjust depending on the light setting you're in, which is convenient, and when I videochat, people have told me that the microphone will filter out background noise.
I think the laptop is only running on 2GB RAM, which is doing well with Windows 7 for the programs that I use, but I do notice a little lag when I'm opening up big photo files. The startup only takes about 2 minutes though a huge step up from my last computer. If you're planning on doing more intensive visual stuff, I would recommend adding some extra RAM, but the screw-on panel at the bottom makes that easy to do.
The one complaint I have is that the touchpad is a little finicky it'll zoom in and out when I'm just trying to scroll, and to click with the button, you have to make sure you press all the way down.
Lenovo has not updated the graphics drivers -creating a problem with Windows updateWindows update will not enable the Win 7 sp1 download because it (correctly) detects a driver software conflict. Calls (multiple) to Lenovo support have not been helpful. I have tried multiple workarounds without successmanual driver updates cause loss of graphic switching functionality-each time I needed to revert
If you purchase this unit you will end up in driver purgatory with me.
** Update 11/24/11 **
Not as happy as I was. The more I use the keyboard I realize the keys are too shallow, not enough travel. The screen is very glossy and battery life is OK. I am considering selling it and getting the ThinkPad Edge E420 or E425.

This is my second laptop the first was a Lenovo as well, but HUGE this is such an improvement thin and light, and even more portable because the battery will last about 5 and a half hours, and it doesn't get hot. There's a power-saving feature, which minimizes energy usage at the touch of a button, but I haven't noticed much difference between that and the normal setting. The screen brightness will adjust depending on the light setting you're in, which is convenient, and when I videochat, people have told me that the microphone will filter out background noise.

I just received this today. My first impressions are very good. The built quality and style are excellent. It has the best keyboard I have ever used on a laptop and I have had a lot of laptops including Macbooks. The keyboard is not back-lit but with the black keys on silver background they are easy to see in dim light. Much better than laptops with black keys on black background. After having and trying many laptops I find the keyboard is very important. Also Lenovo is consistently rated among the top for service and reliability. The closet to Apple. I think this compares well to the Macbook Pro 13". Compared to the Macbook Pro this has a better keyboard, is lighter and has a 14" screen. I have always liked the 13.3" laptops, but the 14" is noticeably larger. If you want Mac OS, than the Macbook is your only option. And I have to say at this point I do prefer Mac OS X to Windows 7. But that may change with Windows 8. Anyhow, I think this is an excellent laptop. It has the first gen i3 processor but also has the Nvidia graphics. These can be found for under $500 refurbished on Amazon or eBay. If you do not need a super light laptop this is hard to beat for under $500. And this is one of the lightest 14" notebooks on the market. Lenovo does sell the updated models with the second gen i5 processor for about $700. I choose this over the Lenovo Edge E420, which is going for around the same price. Main reasons are, this model is lighter and has better battery life. Also the black on silver vs black on black keyboard. Other things about this laptop to note. The sound is decent, not very loud but not tinny at full volume. The trackpad is not large, but is works well as does the trackpad buttons. It also has a finger print reader which is helpful is you use a password. Just slide your finger across the reader and you are logged in. If your budget allows take a look at the new U300s, U300 and U400 lenovo models. The are coming out on November 1st. The U400 being the update to this model. That would be my choice is I was OK with the $850 price. Also note this laptop does not have a built in DVD. This keeps it lighter. The Edge E420 does have a DVD. I will update this after I spend more time with this laptop.** Update 11/24/11 **

Reviews of Samsung NP540U3C-A03UB Series 5 13.3" Touch-Screen Laptop - 4GB
This Ultrabook has spoiled me forever. Full size power and performance in a lightweight product that I use daily. My 2-year old Toshiba Satellite laptop feels like it weighs a ton compared to this one. Battery length is excellent (almost 6 hours unless watching videos, maybe 4 1/2 5 hours) and sound quality is much better than expected although I usually use headphones, it's nice to have a laptop that you can hear clearly through its own speakers. I flow between using the keyboard, the mouse, and the touchscreen (which I love), but the onscreen keyboard has not gotten as much use from me as I thought it might. Windows 8 took no time to get used to for me and is very compatible with this touchscreen Ultrabook. If you miss having a backlit keyboard, as I've read in other reviews of this model, just tip the screen down for a second to see what you're doing. I know where the keys are, so for me the lack of backlighting was a non-issue. Cosmetically, it's absolutely beautiful and fingerprint free (except for the easy to clean touchscreen). I got this exact model for $600 at Best Buy after a very good sale and some other discounts (I bought a Verizon JetPack mobile hotspot and got another $100 off the price of this computer, which was just an added bonus at the checkout counter that I wasn't expecting). This was about three months ago and I haven't seen it on sale for such a low price since then. This model may be steeply priced if it's selling for $900 but if you can find it for $750 or less, grab it!

I found nearly 60 positive reviews (average 4.8 stars) for this computer on the Walmart website, so I ordered it through Amazon to save money. So far, a week later, this computer is just as advertised. The screen is great, the features are great also. Be sure to make your recovery disks early, however. They take awhile, and that's a Windows 7 issue, not an issue with this computer. I'd buy it again, and will update this review as I get more experience with it. See the Walmart reviews.

Dell Inspiron i17R-1713 17.3-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black) Review
I've had the Dell Inspiron 17R (500 gig hard drive; 4 gigs RAM; i5-2410m processor) for about a month. I upgraded it to 6 gigs of RAM.
The Inspiron is a pretty good value. You get a lot of machine for the money. The i5-2410m processor is fast. Combined with the large amount of RAM, it'll handle with ease any normal, everyday task, such as watching movies, browsing, word processing, home video editing, and so on. I can't speak to whether it'd be suitable for gaming, because I don't use it for that. However, it is quite a powerful laptop for routine computer stuff.
I have seen the screen criticized elsewhere, for not being super-high resolution, but I disagree. The 17.3" screen is one of the high points of this laptop. It is bright, sharp, and easy to read. I've always been a fan of "desktop replacement" laptops, and have several over the years, always with a 17" screen. I think this is one of the better screens out there. It's 1600x900, which is not 1920x1080, but it's still very sharp, and the Inspiron 17R is half the price of a 1920x1080 laptop.
It comes with a nice mix of ports. Two USB 3.0, a USB 2.0, and an extremely useful eSATAe. The USB3.0 ports are not providing the kind of performance I was hoping for. I think that either the laptop or my external drives are not configured properly to take advantage of USB3.0. I'm getting USB3.0 speeds that are little better than USB2.0. On the other hand, the eSATAe port is blazin' fast. I plan just to use the eSATAe port and not bother with the 3.0 ports.
My main complaint with this laptop is the mouse pad. There are some laptops out there that have a mouse which jumps around too much. This is one of them. Many other laptops do not have this problem anymore; it was a design problem that was fixed over the years. So, what does this problem entail? When you're typing, the cursor will occasionally jump elsewhere on the screen, and if you're not careful, you can end up deleting important text. And, as another reviewer noted, there's the occasional related problem of the mouse-pointer sort of pinning itself to the right side of the screen; when this happens, nothing you do on the mousepad will unstick it, and you just have to fuss with it and, ultimately, wait for it to decide to start working again. Experimenting with the mouse pad controls (sensitivity and speed, in Control Panel) helps a little, but not a lot. Fundamentally, it is just a bad mouse pad, something that should have been addressed by Dell and put to rest a long, long time ago. The cursor-jumpiness around the screen is just unacceptable on a modern laptop. The keyboard itself is mediocre; it has nice chicklet-style keys that are easy to type on, but they occasionally miss a letter when they shouldn't. I spilled just a couple of drops of Diet Coke on one key, and now that key and six surrounding keys have permanent pop-and-crackle noises when I touch them. Many (in fact, "most" or "all") other laptop keyboards are more mishap-tolerant than the one in the 17R. I want to love this laptop, but I have to say that laptops from other brands such as Toshiba have much better keyboards and mouse pads.
The battery life is poor. It is the shortest battery life I have ever experienced on a laptop. You can get about 90 minutes if you are doing light browsing. Any sort of heavy usage, like movie-watching, will put you down in the 60 to 75 minute range. I really don't get that. I've had other 17" monitor laptops that ran for 2.5 to 3.5 hours between charges. It doesn't bother me much, because I use it at home, where it's plugged in. If I was in more of a road-warrior mode, I would've already returned it. This laptop basically needs to be plugged in when you're using it. It is also very heavy substantially heavier than my last couple of 17" laptops. It really is not designed for road use, either in battery usage or weight; it's truly an old-school desktop replacement laptop.
In summary: for the price, you get a lot of laptop with Dell. The Inspiron 17R has a beautiful screen, a very fast processor, and ample storage and RAM for normal business or personal use. I don't think for the $600 to $700 (depending on configuration) you can get much more laptop elsewhere. However, the mouse, and specifically the jumpiness of the mouse, truly sucks. The keyboard is very low-end -so low-end it's hard to believe Dell thought this was an acceptable component to put on a modern, $600 machine. All in all, I give this laptop 3 stars. I would like to see Dell really drill down on why their mousepads and keyboards are not up to the competition, and replace them with better parts. I have a feeling this one will last about a year or two, and then I will probably replace it with a different brand.Overall, I love this product, though considering the last computer I had was a 12.5"

Best HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation 8770w - 17.3" - Core i7 3630QM Deals
This machine is built to withstand almost anything you through at it. The build quality and materials are exceptional. From a industrial design and manufacturing perspective, it is even nicer than a MacBook Pro.
I really like this machine, except for one issue, screen resolution. Apple has proven how beautiful and productive higher resolution displays can make even a laptop. Spending the extra money, weight, and bulk to get a 17.3 inch display should result in more room to work. Because the resolution on this machine is no higher than it is on 15 inch machines, you get a display that isn't as attractive and doesn't fit nearly as much content on it as it could with a higher resolution. This is especially important for content creators and for people that work in spreadsheets, but really it is an issue for all professional users. Apple gets this with their Retina displays, Google gets it with their Pixel laptop, and Dell gets it with their Ultra high resolution series of displays. Hopefully HP will make a higher resolution display available soon on their workstation class laptops.
The only excuse for the screen resolution on this machine is that most people are going to use it in a docking station with external monitors. I have mine attached to 2 Dell U2713HM Ultra High resolution displays. The screen resolution only bothers me when I am using this machine on the road, but then again, that is the whole reason I bought the 17.3 inch workstation.
When you are deciding on which machine to buy, I recommend you consider the screen resolution issue. A 15 inch or even 13 inch machine with similar specs and the same resolution display might save your back and shoulder some pain from lugging this heavy machine around.

The item was double packed, But the inside carton had large tear on it from a Knife or something, the laptop however was sealed and did not have any signs of being opened or used !!
what sets this laptop apart is that it has an IPS screen with wonderful contrast and deep blacks, and of course wide view angles, the colors are little short only if compared to a vaio Z or a mac pro
the 9 cell battery gives 10 hours of light internet browsing or 6 hours of video watching.
the fan is silent most of the time
I'm happy with my purchase so far !!
The product had slightly different features than advertised on Amazon, and what was purchased, but the vendor worked with me 1000% to resolve this. I am a happy owner of this ThinkPad, and of this vendor.

For the price I got (350) this laptop has all the specs i need to be successful in college and maybe beyond.
In my first couple days, my only complaint is the loud mouse button....
Another issue, for those who buy Windows computers to dual boot them with Linux is that the UEFI (standard on newer Windows computers) makes this more difficult. I was able to install Ubuntu 13.04 after defragmenting, then shrinking the main C: partition within Windows using Disk Manager, then running the Ubuntu install disk using Legacy mode in the Bios. To get to Legacy mode, you have to press F8 as the computer starts to boot, then searching through the fields until you can enable it. Then, when the computer reboots, you have to press F12 to allow booting from the 13.04 DVD (13.04 install disk takes up 800MB--more than most CD's). I then had to use "Boot Repair," a Lubuntu based application downloadable and burned to a CD from the Ubuntu website. A warning to Ubuntu users: 12.04 did not support either wired or wireless internet with this computer. I have not tried wired with 13.04 as wireless worked well. Now that Ubuntu is installed alongside Windows, I can go to my usual practice of using Windows only to back up my IPOD.
I like Dell very Much for its durability . I will recommend for all.

This laptop in an incredible machine for the price that I paid. As listing all of the pro's of this laptop would take a lot longer than listing the cons, lets just skip to the bad stuff. It's a black laptop, so the grease on your fingers is visible on it. A previous review stated that the left click on the touchpad was too loud. I agree completely. If you're going to play Cookie Clicker in church, people will look at you funny. Other than that, there have been no downsides whatsoever. The onboard chipset runs all of the games that I play at acceptable framerates (Dota 2 on low runs at about 45fps steadily). I multi-task, browse the internet, play games, write reports, draw up spreadsheets, all at the same time. No slowdown, no nonsense. I would definitely recommend this laptop, and in fact I already have.Best Deals for Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-3763BLK 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black Matte
I bought this for $349 on Amazon with free shipping. I buy computers based on components rather than brand. This computer has an I3 processor that is significantly faster than the usual processor at this price level. The 4GB of RAM is more than adequate. The main complaint I have with the computer is Windows 8 and the way Dell has scattered stuff across multiple partitions. Windows 8 can be improved by downloading something called "Classic Shell" (find the website by Googling) that gives you a standard "Start Menu" reminiscent of XP, Vista, or Windows 7.Another issue, for those who buy Windows computers to dual boot them with Linux is that the UEFI (standard on newer Windows computers) makes this more difficult. I will keep this relatively short-you get what you pay for! For the current listed price there is no other 14" touchscreen on the market at this price point. I have now had this laptop for nearly a week and it is pretty fast. I ordered 4gb of ram along with the computer to upgrade to 8gb total. This makes all the difference and for roughly $25 you can get the most out of this computer with this simple upgrade that a child could install. Backlit keyboard is great and illuminates nicely without blinding you in very dark locations. As for the fit and finish-I personally like it. It really is silky in feel. The computer itself is solidly built and all parts fit well. Also, the speakers on this thing are great for a budget laptop. They get a lot louder than previous laptops I've had and with more body. They really sound the best when the laptop is sitting on a hard surface so they can reflect sound off of it since they are on the bottom. My only issues with this laptop are the wifi and the smallish battery. The wifi disconnects on a regular basis and has to be reset. Three hours on the internet and I will have to reset atleast twice. I will probably just get a nano usb wifi module to fix this situation. That being said, still a great purchase as long as I get 2 years out of this thing.
PROS:
-Good price for what you get.
-Very comparable to ultrabooks for a similar size and weight (albeit slightly heavier, but not much bulkier)
-Haven't had any software issues, or bugs to report. I've been using this laptop for 3 1/2 months.
-When starting the computer it literally takes less than 10 seconds to boot.
-Good size memory and RAM
-Processor speed is good.
-The touchscreen; I have gotten used to it and really like it. Scrolling on webpages can go way faster than using the pad on a laptop.
CONS:
-The wifi adapter tends to go in and out. Every couple of hours or so you will lose your connection for about 10-30 seconds.
-As is you will need to do a manual update for the wireless adapter from the Acer website. If you aren't very computer saavy this can take a while to figure out how to do.
-The casing of the laptop (on mine at least) is poorly put together. There is a good 1/4 inch gap in the casing on the left side of mine.
-The touchscreen; If you use it often your screen will need to be cleaned very often. Visually this can get annoying. If you have OCD, don't even bother getting a touchscreen laptop. It will drive you nuts.
OVERALL:
Overall I think for the price you are getting higher end "insides" with a lower quality "outside". If you're on a budget and don't mind the few issues I have found so far, this computer will work fine. None of the issues were enough, for me, to ever get frustrated or regret my purchase. I think its great that you can still get a higher functioning laptop for a lower price.
Edit: Upon opening there was a tiny scratch in the corner of the casing where the screen is. Amazon resolved my issue within a matter of minutes via email. No worries when purchasing from Amazon.
UPDATE,Ive searched and searched and searched for another good laptop for a good price!! and no luck!, thers 2 other acer for 50-60 more and I think im going to reorder this one again! :( so heads on on a semi cheap laptop, if you want it to last, get square trade coverage here in amazon! which is what Im going to do, other wise it'll probably last me 2 years or less. Its so worth it if you dont want an expensive laptop right now! I wish these other people would answer their reviews! haha.

This is a great laptop and definitely worth the price. I had some issues with the wifi staying connected, but went to Acer's site and downloaded a different driver and now it works perfect! I love the touchscreen! It has everything I need in a computer and very happy with the purchase.Best Deals for Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)
I researched extensively before buying this laptop. I needed something under $800, lightweight, had an optical drive, a webcam, quick start at boot and a decent size hard drive. This is what I ended up purchasing.PROS:

The best of its kind to provide a balance between battery performance between 7 hours with wifi on to do projects. An excellent gaming device especially playing NBA 2k13 and Skyrim with no lagging at all. Provide landscape and portrait mode for reading at 13 inch monitor. Touch screen responsive with no lag. Touch pad feeling smooth similar to Macbook air. It is even lighter on hand with its 13 inch compare with the weight of macbook air 11 inch. It eliminated the arrow key problem macbook air had. Comes with acer leather high class feeling case, white mouse, white power cable that matches the color of S7. Comes with HDMI port and VGA port. Also a screen cloth to protect the monitor's contact with keyboard when closed. Highly recommanded for casual gaming or project work. Excellence Ultrabook to show off to your Macbook friends.
The S7 is everything an ultrabook should be. It has a very nice intuitive design and layout. The power button is located outside the unit in the middle on the left hand side. Also on the same side is the port for the VGA/HDMI adapter and the headphones. Outside on the right side are located two 3.0 USB ports and a 2-in-1 card reader. The S7 has a 1.3 MP webcam that delivers high resolution images that won't disappoint. The 13.3-inch HD touch screen display is uniformly bright. The active matrix TFT color display delivers very crisp true images no fading even to the edges of the screen and boasts a resolution of 1920x 1080. The touchscreen is very responsive. This ultrabook has all the perks including IEEE 802.11 wifi and 4.0 bluetooth.
The keyboard is backlit which is a nice touch. The keyboard has a Windows start key and a menu key. Overall the keyboard is well laid out. It has a nice feel to it but there's very little travel when typing which may lead to repeat character errors when typing.
Physically the unit has a solid feel to it and it should since the unit's body is lightweight aluminum. The top of the unit is covered in Gorilla glass. When the unit is on the "Acer" logo glows white on the face. Closed the unit is quite literally razor-thin less than 0.5-in and will give the MacBook Air a run for the money. The unit travels well. It has excellent battery life long enough for an east-to-west coast flight (ca. 5-h). In my book, the Acer S7 comes out on top without a doubt!
In terms of the processor, the S7 has a 3rd generation dual core i7 chipset clocked at 1.9 GHz which can be boosted to speeds of 3.0 GHz. The unit comes with 4G SDRAM. I use large dataset applications such as NVIVO and SPSS and have been quite impressed with the speed. Unlike many other computers this unit doesn't heat up noticeably even when you use it all day. It does have a fan that is relatively quiet and turns on when needed to help dissipate heat.
Disadvantages include the fact you are limited to 4G RRAM the RAM is soldered into the motherboard so you can't add RAM. I want to note that this is common problem with ultrabooks. To hook up to a projector or digital screen you must use one of the two adapters provided with the unit. Don't lose these as the adapter is a proprietary product. The audio is supposedly Dolby Home Theatre 4.0 but don't get excited the sound is nothing to write home about = so-so very tinny and thin. As I stated earlier, the keyboard is a tad too responsive which leads to repeat character errors which can be annoying if you are a speed typist.
Bottom-line if you are a working technical professional looking for a laptop and don't want to compromise performance and capabilities for travelability then look no further the Acer S7 is well worth it's sticker price of $1649.00
Recommendations: I highly recommend purchasing a second AC power adapter and an Acer onsite service plan.
Here are some of the concerns you might see online addressed:
1) The keyboard was reviewed to be slightly uncomfortable. I find it quite pleasant and easier to type on than my other (Vaio) laptop.
2) The battery life is wonderful as it goes up to 6.5 hours on battery saver, and a bit above 5 hours on balanced.
This is a beautiful device that is bound to get plenty of attention from all your friends, especially since it is super thin and touch-screen enabled.
I'll edit my review if anything goes wrong, but so far it is going perfectly.
Prior to that we had tried the Zen Book Prime, but the keyboard and touchpad were just too buggy. We considered the Samsung Series 9 as well. Against all of my programmer boyfriend's belief's we tried a juiced up Mac Air 13 but ultimately decided against the Apple OS.
We didn't want to wait any longer for the Yoga or HP Envy 2 convertibles. I decided I needed an ultra portable laptop over a tablet. I wanted to be able to do some work on it as well and not use it primarily for entertainment.
My boyfriend surprised me with this beautiful laptop. Beautiful, feels solid, and has all the goodies, at this price, it better.
First, it's gorgeous. Beautiful display, feels solid, the keypad looks like the Macbook Air but less comfortable. Feels good but a little awkward, and the delete key is located to the right of the space bar.
This was my first experience with Windows 8, and let me say you really need a touch screen to utilize it. I strongly recommend that you DON'T update to Windows 8 UNLESS you have a touchscreen.
Back to this gem, I've now had it two weeks and still beautiful but instead of being more at ease with the keyboard, it's actually getting more cumbersome as I'm very aware of as I'm typing this review. It's great for basic apps and web browsing but if I just wanted that I could have gotten a tablet or Chromebook for a fraction of the price.
The fan is so loud that my visiting mother thought it was the radiators. I'm very aware of the fan as I'm typing this. Sometimes the fan is SO loud lately that it seems like it's going to self-destruct.
Three stars because of the layout of the keyboard, the fan, and for this price why not make this gorgeous machine fully convert to a tablet?? It's already a touch screen so most of the job is done.
Noise. The fan noise was random and extraordinarily loud. So much so that I couldn't take a conference call on a speaker. Also anyone sitting in my office when the fan kicked in remarked about the jet engine taking off. I tried to ignore it, or tell myself that I would get used to it, but I just couldn't and it ended up going back.
Another annoying factor for me is that the trackpad is not centered. I know it's a common placement, but it still really bothered me. The left side of the palm rest is significantly smaller than the right side of the palm rest. I have large hands and I ended up having to change how I type, having to really tuck my left thumb under my fingers and it just wasn't comfortable for all day computing.
The other factors that I would have overlooked if it wasn't for the above 2 deal breakers:
Key travel is shallow on this keyboard. Coming from 15 years of using ThinkPads, the difference was significant, but it would not have been the deal breaker for me.
The other thing I wasn't crazy about was that the edging on the bottom half of the laptop was sharper that it should have been. Again, when you're looking for all day comfort, this is one of the little things that work against you. Another non-deal breaker for me, but just a point of feedback.
I would have loved better battery life as well.
Other than these few items, I absolutely loved the S7 Ultrabook. I'm going to give either the Asus UX31A Touch or the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch a shot next.

From the minute you open the box, you have the feeling that this is no ordinary laptop and you are right. Each component is packaged in its own little unit within with care. Inside you will find the Acer S7, AC power adapter, a wireless mouse, 2 special adapters for VGA and for HDMI, and a case for your S7. Acer even includes an anti-static cloth. Sweet. Turn on and set-up is straightforward though I won't say I am a fan of the Windows 8 operating system. The S7 is everything an ultrabook should be. It has a very nice intuitive design and layout. When you spend $1,700 on a laptop, you just don't want to compromise or settle. There's so much to love about the S7....gorgeous styling, light, and stunning screen. It became the envy of everyone in my office. So what's the unpardonable sin for me?Noise. The fan noise was random and extraordinarily loud. So much so that I couldn't take a conference call on a speaker. Also anyone sitting in my office when the fan kicked in remarked about the jet engine taking off. I just received this today so I may post a follow up review later.
My first impression was that it was huge. It's thicker and heavier than I expected but for the price point it's to be expected. I don't plan to travel too often with it so it's not a huge concern to me. Setup with windows 8 is unbelievably simple and makes it quick to get up and running. I'm not a fan of the new Metro start screen. I tried to customize it but it still just took up way too much space for my liking. So I ended up downloading a free app, called classic shell that brought back the start menu functionality for me. I think the laptop (which is what we are actually reviewing here not windows 8) is quite peppy and the specs are more than adequate for any average user. If you primarily use your computer for homework, email, web surfing, etc this will be great. If you're a heavy gamer you probably want something else.
I have returned the second one and was refunded my money. I ordered a Samsung Chromebook, $150 dollars cheaper and looks like it is going to be a much better laptop. Do not purchase this item. I have no idea how it got good reviews? If it had not happened with two different new laptops I could have understood but this is definitely a defect in the computer.

I bought a Dell Inspiron in 2004 and loved it. It did its job for years and after 8 years, decided to buy a new laptop. Everybody told me Toshiba was the computer to have. Well, I listened and it crashed immediately. Since then it has crashed 2 more times and I finally junked it. I said the heck with it and bought this one. Absolutely no problems whatsoever and I love it. It's a great laptop and you can't beat the price. Maybe it's just bad luck with Toshiba and good luck with Dell, but I'm sticking with Dell. I'm not a computer geek and don't understand much about computers. I just know Dell has been good to me for the last 9 years.Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i15N-3091BK 15-Inch Laptop

This it is my second, after I returned the first one with the same issue. The size, weight and Windows 8 Operating System are fine. However, they have a defect in the sensitivity of the mouse. It causes the curser to skip all over the place. You will be typing an email and it will suddenly skip to the middle of another sentence or paragraph or even better delete the document or email all together. It is all random and at first I thought it was me, then maybe just a weird defect. I sent the brand new Laptop back to Amazon, who promptly sent me another new one. The same thing started again after about 2 weeks. I contacted Dell support, in India. After about 30 minutes on the phone and remote access to remedy the issue they told me that I would need to purchase a $289 "Software Warranty" to correct the problem. I was told I must have downloaded something that corrupted the Mouse File. Seriously, are you kidding! On both brand new laptops? I had not even put my personal documents on the system yet. And certainly did not download anything. All I had done was surf the net on some basic websites like Amazon and Target!I have returned the second one and was refunded my money. I ordered a Samsung Chromebook, $150 dollars cheaper and looks like it is going to be a much better laptop. Do not purchase this item. I have no idea how it got good reviews? Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Pentium Dual Reviews
First, if you're looking for a laptop with all the bells and whistles, this version of Toshiba's Satellite isn't it. Still, it's a great unit. The screen is amazing. Crystal clear and sharp. Not overly glossy to the point where you can see who's standing behind you. Movies look amazing on it.
You can get by with the 1 gig of ram it comes with, but be prepared for it to be a little sluggish. Still perfectly usable, but if you really want to take advantage of the nature of dual core (i.e. multi-tasking) then you'll want 2 gig. I put 2GB of Kingston, (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), in the system and it has run flawless.
Very nice touch-pad on this unit and the left-right buttons under the touch pad are just right not too mushy to cause an accidental click and not to stiff that they are annoying. Keyboard is laid out nicely with the "delete" key in the top right corner. Just the way I like it. Movies played perfectly and I was able to burn CD's right out of the box. Vista has a very cool drag and drop CD burning utility built into the OS. Sound system very nice, though speakers not adequate for movies too quiet. But the simulated Dolby Surround for headphones works very well.
Other nice features that other laptops fail to include is a latching mechanism when you close the "lid" and a switch that let's you instantly turn off WiFi. This works very well by the way and stretches battery power when you don't need to be "connected."
The quibbles. If you are going to use this laptop for typing your next novel, you might want to try out the keyboard in your local PC store to make sure you are comfortable typing on it for extended periods. It's a little on the stiff side compared to some others. Another minor grip is no TV out. It does have a VGA out, but if you want to throw the image onto a TV you'll need a converter a simple VGA to S-Video cable for example won't cut it. Also, it only has 2 USB ports. If you plan to use it as your desktop unit as well, you might need a USB hub.
These gripes are minor in my opinion because I don't really NEED them, but to me, it was worth the sacrifice to get this unit at so low a price point.
I'm very happy with the system. Nice to have a Toshiba. Great brand. Everything worked, right out of the box. This one is replacing a Toshiba that I've had for years without issue.
As usual on Toshiba come with recovery cd (other brand not include this anymore, you have to burn it from the HD), quick install guide, and documents about warranty and toshiba accesories.
The finished look very well, except for the BIG BIG brand name on the lid, maybe somebody like that, not me. The keyboard is white color, the screen is pretty bright so you don't have any problem reading with sunlight. The weight is the normal for a 15.4" notebook, like 6 pounds.
This unit don't come with Card reader, you can see the space for it, but not coming with this model. I thought that thing about just two USB ports was a lie but is true, this notebook just have two USB port on the left side, doesn't have TV out.

You will definitely want to upgrade the RAM to 2GB (the max) from the 1GB it came with. New memory should cost less than $50 at many online computer retailers and it provides a *very* noticeable improvement in performance. Upgrading is very simple, you open the hatch on the bottom of the laptop, remove the 2 memory modules there (2 x 512mb) and install the new modules (2 x 1GB). For those interested, the type of RAM you're looking for is DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) 200-pin SO-DIMM. Although many of those retailers let you enter the model# and it shows you compatible memory you can buy.
The weight listed here at amazon is 9lbs, but the actual weight is much less. This laptop replaces a 4 year old Dell Inspiron that was really over 9lbs and this laptop is significantly less. I'd say probably closer to 6lbs.
This doesn't come with any of the extras you see on more expensive laptops such as memory card readers, media buttons (like play/pause, forward, rewind, etc), extra USB ports (there are only 2), or things like bluetooth or N-wireless (it does come with B/G-wireless). The battery is also rather short, lasting only about 2 hours, a little more or less depending on the selected power profile.
The DVD drive reads and burns CDs and DVDs effortlessy. I don't use iTunes, so I can't comment on other's troubles with it, I'm sure it will influence your choice if that is a program you use frequently.
The screen is very very nice. Very clear and bright, and has a smooth anti-glare glass(?) covering. The build quality is overall very nice and feels solidly built.
For those interested, the Vista Experience scores are as follows:
Procesor=4.7
Memory (RAM)=4.2 (note that changing to 2GB did not affect this score)
Graphics=3.1 (poor due to Intel XMA graphics. this is why gamers should look elsewhere)
Gaming Graphics=3.3
Primary HardDisk=4.9
I've noticed some people here have given this product bum reviews, and I think they must either have too high of standards for a basic model laptop or that they don't really know much about computers and their performance in the first place. One thing I found right off the bat was the multitude of unnecessary software that comes preinstalled with this laptop (as with pretty much all Windows-based computers today). The first thing you should do after turning your laptop on is to uninstall all the software you know you won't be using. This will free up space and increase performance as you eliminate programs you won't need. People interested in buying this laptop should also purchase additional RAM, as my model only came with 1GB. I bought 2GB RAM at Best Buy for $60, and the investment was well worth it. I have no issues with having multiple webpages up, iTunes playing music, and word processing all at the same time.
The people who have bashed this computer seem to not understand that certain steps need to be taken to improve overall performance, especially on base models like the Satellite A205. Toshiba is a great company, and this laptop is no disappointment by any means. I would highly recommend this laptop to any student who is on a budget and needs a computer for school. I would not recommend this laptop to hardcore gamers (the video card isn't built for those as it's a basic model), video editors (if you're doing video editing you should be using a Mac laptop), or those who demand incredibly high performance for complicated programs that need a higher performing machine to run them.
I hope this review helps some people, espeically students who need a quality laptop at a fair price. For people who want a higher performing laptop for gaming or other reasons, I would look to a higher model Toshiba with more featuers. But for basic everyday use (internet browsing, music, word processing, etc.) this laptop is perfect. The only reason this didn't get 5 stars was the lack of a higher performing video card if I do decide to do some gaming at some point in the future. However, since this is a basic model it's acceptable and I'm completely happy with it!
The one real negative besides the OS, which is not toshiba's fault, is the horrendously short battery life. Carry your power cables with you, you'll need them. You get maybe...just maybe two hours of life at what I would call low level usage. It's on and I'm surfing. Heaven forbid I actually use the dvd drive and really shorten that battery life.
Screen display and size is fine, built in pointing is okay, but Acer's little scroll button is way better than the toshiba's nothing, you'll need a mouse for anything beyond basic goofing off.
I'm not really too disappointed in it, but it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would, even with the pretty decent price.
New add on 5-3-08: I've had this for a whle now and while I've gotten used to vista (used to and liking it are not the same..but it actually does appear to be incredibly stable) but the ONLY thing that I would really change is the pointing device. But to be honest, I carry the power cables and a mouse with it at all times, and the mouse comes out for anything I deem 'serious' computer usage.
New add on 9-26-08: dvd player/burner is toast, and I hardly ever used it. I don't watch movies on this thing, so the inconvenience factor is low, but I occasionally burn stuff so I bought a dual layer external with lightscribe.
A bought this computer because was one of the best value for the money. The dual core processor is great, 1GB ram look like not enought using Windows Vista (just the OS use 780MB ) so if you plan to use heavy software, I think you need 2 gb for ram.As usual on Toshiba come with recovery cd (other brand not include this anymore, you have to burn it from the HD), quick install guide, and documents about warranty and toshiba accesories.

This laptop is a decent choice for those looking for a budget computer. Hard core gamers, enthusiasts, or anyone else looking for high-performance should look elsewhere. But for surfing the internet, office programs, and other basic applications this is a great choice. The dual-core Intel processor is more than enough to run those basic applications smoothly and quickly. The 120GB hard drive is plenty to keep all your music, videos, etc.You will definitely want to upgrade the RAM to 2GB (the max) from the 1GB it came with. Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Pentium Dual
I recently purchased this laptop at Best Buy and I am incredibly satisfied with it thus far. The one thing I made sure to do right away was to purchase 2GB of RAM when I got the laptop as mine only came with 1GB total (it had 2 512MB modules in it). This allows me to do more multitasking and have overall better performance (since Vista alone needs nearly 1GB of RAM just to work). I was able to install the new 1GB modules myself without any problem, the owners manual that accompanies the laptop shows you exactly how to do it in an easy-to-understand manner. The screen is brilliant and the keyboard is easy on the hands. I will mainly be using this computer for word processing and internet research (I am currently a full-time graduate student). However, this laptop is also compatible with iTunes and other popular media programs so I can listen to music, move songs to and from my iPod with the laptop, and also watch DVDs and streaming videos online with no problems. It is also equipped with a wireless internet card so you can go wireless with it right out of the box without any hassle.I've noticed some people here have given this product bum reviews, and I think they must either have too high of standards for a basic model laptop or that they don't really know much about computers and their performance in the first place. A pretty decent powerhouse laptop for the price, but because of the low price point if has very little software. It's loaded with 'samples' and 'trials' that I deleted pretty much immediately. Loading itunes was difficult for some reason. I had to load it three times, and finally got it load after uninstalling quicktime. Now it appears to be fine. I have heard that toshiba laptops have this problem. I will say that I had heard both good and bad about vista before purchasing, and wasn't really concerned and I've gone through this several times before with everyone running around saying "windows 95 sucks, windows 98 sucks, windows xp sucks". If I had to do over, I would custom order a laptop without vista. Vista actually does appear to suck. It is not intuitive, and I cannot do the most simple task such as "save as" without jumping through hoops and much cursing. I just opened an excell spreadsheet I carry with me on a usb drive and it would not allow me to save it to the computer. I suppose as I learn it my opinion may change about Vista, but for jumping in and working with it immediately, it is a bit tough. Heck, they even hid the shut-down button in a most inconspicuous place. The one real negative besides the OS, which is not toshiba's fault, is the horrendously short battery life.
