I stumbled upon the bad reviews left for this laptop and felt the need to share my experience. I converted from mac, since macbook airs were exceeding my budget. I cannot do windows, so I installed the next best thing to macos: ubuntu linux. A review I saw online suggested installing linux on the build-in SSD drive, which is used for windows fast boot otherwise. It works like a charm. My laptop now boots super fast and stays super fast. It loads firefox in 4 sec (initial load, not from cache) under Ubuntu. Oh, I also did not have to load any drivers for Linux, everything just works.

All of the components of this laptop function flawlessly. The problems reported by other reviewers, such as spotty wireless, slowness, etc must be due to windows 8. It is not fair to blame this laptop for those. I also kept windows 8 and playing with it from time to time, and have not seen any problems there as well.

I like the keyboard and trackpad the most. They are very comfortable to use.

For this price, this laptop is highly recommended.

I usually think most negative reviews are due to defective items or people not using the product correctly. In this case, the negative reviews couldn't be more accurate and I have little to add, other than my low rating.

This machine has the most spotty wifi I've ever seen, it will connect to a network, then after you close the lid, putting it to sleep, it won't connect to the same exact network it was just on when you wake it up 5 minutes later (and I'm talking even giving it a full 5 minutes to wake up)! I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about 50 times, as it's the only way to get it to reconnect.

For a Core i5 with "ExpressChache" it boots up, and runs programs, slower than my wife's basic Core i3 HP Pavilion laptop that was half the price and has more USB 3 ports and an optical drive....

The customer service is awful. I never complain about tech support in other countries, as I personally feels it gives customers the benefit of 24/7 tech support, but when you can't understand a word the technician is saying and they can't understand you, it's kind of a problem. I'm used to them forcing you to try steps you've already tried before but when they don't even understand what you are saying when you try to explain what you've already done... Ugh.

Also, and I'm not sure if this was mentioned in previous reviews, the Samsung specific apps that come installed with the machine don't work properly. The "SW Update" (to update drivers and Bios and programs) won't let you hide updates you don't want, like it keeps telling me I need to reinstall the Norton Suite it came with despite my having another antivirus installed, and half the driver updates fail. There's even an update for the wireless card but it fails every time, even when I'm hard-wire connected by Ethernet! The "S Service" app (which is supposed to allow Samsung techs to connect remotely to your PC through the internet) starts up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads the update, starts back up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads it, restarts... You get it, over and over again. I let it do this for 5 hours hoping it just had a lot of information to download but it was still going!

Now my biggest irk. I called customer care about the wireless issue, which I've seen reported everywhere EXCEPT on the Samsung Support Webpages, and after a while I was told to send the Ultrabook back to Samsung. They paid for shipping but I was responsible for packaging the Ultrabook, where as most other companies will send you a box to make sure the machine is protected in transit, and told if the software needs to be re-installed, they will charge me $40 even when it's under warranty!!!

My advice, if you have the money to waste on something that won't work correctly right from the start, waste it on something else.

The computer is very beautiful and the performance is good (in terms of speed), but I am very disappointed with its overall performance... in just three months of very moderate usage one of the USB ports simply stopped working. Now the Wireless Network simply turns off without a warning from time to time (even when nobody is on the computer, so it is not caused by an accidental touch on the wifi switch). The only way to fix this is by rebooting the computer...

Finally when I tried to get in contact with Technical Support (I live in Brazil), I was told that this is an american computer and I could not get support here. Even when I tried the Sony International website, they divert the message to the useless Brazilian support... this was also very disappointing since one of the advantages the vendor used to convince me to buy this was "the worldwide support given to Sony Vaio".

After having two Toshibas for almost ten years, which never gave me any problem, I bought my first (and SURELY last) Sony computer. There is greater value on other brands on this pricetag.

Bought the laptop during Black Friday sale, so it's been a little over 6 months and only had one issue with it which was mentioned in one of these reviews as a problem (have heard about it from other sources as well). The laptop kicks you off the internet without warning and when this happenes, the wireless button is still in the on position so there is nothing you can do about it but restart the computer.

I have experienced this problem a few times before I got fed up and called Sony tech support where I was told that the sensor which was built into the computer is an industrial strength and the usual internet signals that are used in homes are not engough for the laptop to pick up on. That is when the signal weakens a little, the lapop cannot detect it, and that is when you get kicked off the net.

Tech support also told me to talk to the company where I subscribe for the internet to do a frimware update on the router which I went ahead and done. Then Sony deinstalled an old program and reinstalled the newest one. This was around Christmas and I have not had ANY problems.

Aside from this one issue I had, I did not experience anything negative, in fact I am very satisfied with my laptop and can recommend it to others wholeheartedly.

UPDATE (2012.01.14):

I had to have the laptop set back to factory settings, (basically as I bought it) and I encountered the same problem with the wireless switch and not being able to connect to the internet. I called Sony again, but my 1 year warranty expired and tech support wasn't able to help me without me paying a fee. However, the guy who I talked to was really nice and suggested to install and updated the newest version of the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 driver. I did just that and it worked! So if anyone is having this same issue, go to esupportDOTsonyDOTcom, type in the model of your computer (VPCEA24FM), then click on Wireless LAN, then select Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 Driver, then just download. Once you restart your computer you shouldn't have issues with your wireless connection again. I don't know if amazon will let me post the link, but here it goes:

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VPCEA24FM/W Laptop / Intel Core i3 Processor 2.26GHZ

I purchased this laptop from a big box store, for an amazing price.

It's super fast, doesn't come bloated with the historically bad Sony software all over it, and is a great machine for everyday use.

The pros:

Windows 7 never looked so good

The LCD is crisp and bright

The keyboard is responsive (Even without the number pad, which I'm not missing all that much)

The Blue Ray is great even if the software to run it is so-so.

With 4gb of ram, this puppy hums

The Con:

One major design flaw keeps this from being a 5 star computer. The power/sleep/hibernation button is on the right hand side of the computer, on the top, near the bezel. It is in the PERFECT place to touch it every single time you pick up the computer. In a week, I've put my computer into hibernation at least a hundred times. Not exaggerating, it is EXTREMELY annoying. None-the-less, I'm not returning the computer, not a deal breaker, just a major annoyance.

I'm really impressed with the fit and finish of this laptop. I'm not used to Sony computers being so reasonable, and so well put together.

Big win.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VPCEA24FM/W Laptop / Intel Core i3 Processor 2.26GHZ

I bought this laptop back in August of 2010 of my senior year in high school. I bought it specifically to last me through my last year in HS and for all four years of my undergrad. There were a few pros and cons that I found with it:

Pros:

-Chiclet style keys: I personally love this style of keys because they aren't annoying while typing and they look great on a laptop.

-Fast processor ( I had an i3, 500GB, 2.26 GHz and 4GB of RAM)

Cons:

-USB ports died one by one

-Memory card slot stopped working.

-The fan noise (this drove me crazy!) I replaced it, cleaned out the dust, and even tried lowering the amount of processes. It was just annoying.

Feels very fragile. The body isn't very durable and it feels like plastic.

I enjoyed the laptop for the first few months that I had it but I decided to move on and get a different laptop. It was fun.

The computer arrived as quickly as possible!

Everything in the box was clean, undamaged and packed well looks like it is brand new computer (I bought refurbished one). Not in the original box so far. All the manuals and warranty card was included.

As for the laptop itself first power start was easy to configure session setup and here we go the brand new Arma 3 game is running as smooth as it should on the powerful enough configuration box. The AMD A8 quad-core CPU and good AMD Radeon video chip on board that what it makes this laptop exceptional. For a price not even close to this one you can afford only tiny Intel configuration. As for design pretty good and lightweight itself case is very thin and nice looking. Touch pad is huge and support multitouch gestures. As for gaming experience I am highly recommend to by any USB mouse also. High definition build-in webcam, nice 5.1 sound and DVD+/-RW drive on board what else one could imagine for as little as a bit greater then $300?

The dell computer I recieved was in very good condition although it has a minor scratch it is nothing to be upset about. With my initial order my restore CD was not included and the power cord had a small short..but I must say I would definately purchase from this company again, They quickly resolved any issues I had they even expressed me a new power cord and my restore cd to make it right..Again definately I would recommend purchasing from this company again.

The laptop was purchased for only one reason to run the DryFire USA Trap program. The unit works really good. Because it is a reconditioned unit, I found that the battery would not fully recharge. Bought a new battery from batteries&butter for $64.00. It is a top notch unit now. This should be the only problem that you should have.

It was delivered before the time indicated by UPS. Oh yes, you do not get a manual with the unit, but you can download the manual at the Dell site.

I received a laptop that was described as like new, the laptop was physically dirty, had many scratches on the screen and body, and came with a dead battery. The decscription and technichal details said that it came with 512 RAM and a dvd drive but came with 256 RAM and a CD drive. when i wrote to him about it, he told me that i should have read his comments to find those details. He should have written the correct details in the description in the first place.

I bought this great looking, good specifications computer this past March. Since then the screen has split from its housing and ASUS customer service refused to fix it under warranty. The problem is that the screen is too skinny to support the force required to open and close the lid. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. This is clearly bad manufacturing and a company who does not stand behind their 2 year warranty and 1 year accidental damage policy. A defect should always be covered under the first year with no question about having to pay for a repair. I really like the machine but the screen not opening and closing properly is probably the worst defect you could possibly have. Thanks for nothing ASUS.

UPDATE 10/26/12. I finally got a manager to pay for the shipping back to the warehouse. They fixed it within a week which was not too bad. The only downfall is that this problem is a defect and will probably happen again. So unless you want to deal with this problem, DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL. The customer service experience was horrible and took five months to complete just to get a shipping label for this issue. ASUS does not win my business ever again.

UPDATE 09/16/13. The CD-ROM is having issues now with the registry making it inoperable for now. I tried to go back and restore to an earlier time and that's not working...and obviously the drivers disk it came with it is now useless. Hopefully I can find the driver online and re-install it. Or call ASUS, but I don't know about that. lol

This laptop is absolutely terrible. Looking at it, it was everything I wanted in a laptop, long battery life and great specs and very lightweight. Unfortunately, it broke only a couple months after I started using it. Windows just stopped working for no reason and I had done nothing that should've broken it. The default hard drive that comes with the laptop, based on the experiences of others, seems to have some problems. Not only that, this laptop has TERRIBLE overheating issues. I have sat this laptop on a cooling fan just playing minecraft and it STILL overheats even with the cooling fan on it. Without the cooling fan it will overheat just doing absolutely minimal tasks like watching videos on the internet. The specs are irrelevant because this laptop cannot handle doing anything that would utilize them. After the hard drive went, I switched to a new one and put Linux Mint on it and it worked fine for about a year, but now the charger has just stopped working. I am fed up. Please do not waste your money on this piece of trash, I feel like I have been robbed of $800. By far the worst purchase I have ever made.

This Laptop was the Laptop of my dreams, combining all the requirements I wanted fulfilled by my laptop in a fairly good price. In the last year, despite certain failings of the laptop I loved it and until a few days ago I would have still given it 3-4 stars. Up until then, the problems I had with it were quite minor (In my opinion) as the headphone jack was loose, the USB 3.0 port didn't always work and the laptop occasionally failed to resume after hibernation. As of a few weeks ago, my USB 3.0 port has failed to work entirely. This said, I do not really have anything that can use it to its full potential and so do not really care, I only really use 1 USB port anyways, for my wireless mouse. The headphone jack being loose is probably my fault for being a tad rough whenever I unplugged my headphones so the problem is probably not the fault of the manufacturer. The hibernation failure, meanwhile, came out of nowhere and I'm still not sure how to fix it, although information on how to do so may be online. However, the problem I had that absolutely killed this laptop for me was how the battery, died two days ago before I went on a long trip. One day it was working fine and I could easily take it around with charge lasting 2-3 hours on high performance and the next it would die on being unplugged from its AC life support system. It went from being a healthy young adult to a frail senior on his/her deathbed within 12 hours. According to the powercfg energy report the battery was last fully charged to about 84% of its capacity so I am not sure what the problem is, whether it is the battery, the AC adapter or some other internal issue.

On the plus side it still works with the battery removed if the AC adapter is plugged in.

So up until this last problem occurred, I was quite happy with this laptop, especially since I am a gamer and kept it under constant stress. I have never till now had a laptop/computer I could game on and this handles most of the games I would want to play quite well. Although some of the newer more graphically/CPU intensive games may not run on it I am still pleased as it can do better than anything I had before. The battery life was also quite long when it existed as I could probably get about 5 hours on balanced/quiet office settings with the standard integrated GPU running instead of the NVIDIA GPU that I have been keeping running almost exclusively due to certain situations.

I plan on sending the laptop to the ASUS service center soon and hope that the problems will be fixed. Although judging by the experiences of my peers, this may be quite the ordeal I am about to go through. I will update this review after I either get it back or have some other horrible/great(one can dream) experience with their service staff.

Honest reviews on ASUS U46SM-DS51 14.1-Inch Laptop (Silver)

I bought this product five months ago in May from this seller, and it worked beautiful from then until yesterday when my hard drive decided to go right after a Windows update. It was working perfectly fine that morning before the update, but after, it froze and wouldn't perform basic tasks. I've already contacted Asus about it and I'm trying to back up my files (to no avail, since the system is slow as molasses), but I feel like with such a new computer, I shouldn't be having such a problem. My friend bought the same exact computer, several months before me, and it's still working fine for her. I don't understand what the issue is. Did I just get a bad computer?

I upgraded to a new Vista laptop last year, and have been unhappy and frustrated with it from the start. When my daughter's laptop died a horrible death, I really didn't want to go through the same Vista pains with her, so I decided to replace it with a Mac (it's going to be a Christmas present, so shhh!). As designated tech support for my family and friends, I started learning everything I could about Mac before she started asking questions. The more I learned about it, the more I wanted one for myself, and now that I have one, I am really kicking myself for not switching last year.

It's simply beautiful. I know it sounds like I drank the apple-flavored Kool-Aid, but the Macbook really is a marvel of elegant form and function. It feels solid and substantial, without being bulky and heavy. the aluminum design is a work of art, and I really appreciate all of the eco-friendly choices that were made regarding the components.

The LED screen is brighter and clearer than my old laptop's LCD screen. Looking at them side by side, the difference is amazing (and my old laptop was marketed as a portable entertainment PC, with an upgraded screen). I don't know what kind of LCD screens some of the other users have, but the Macbook screen is far superior to any notebook screen I've ever seen.

The back-lit keyboard is great no more keyboard light needed. The keys have a solid feel to them, they're not mushy or noisy like some keyboards can be, they're just right, and the key layout is just like a full-size keyboard no more hunting to figure out where the heck the backslash key is hidden or hitting the wrong key because your pinky slipped off of an undersized shift key.

I'll admit that I couldn't figure out the trackpad at first, but I felt like a dork once I realized how simple it is. I did change the settings so that I can tap to click in addition to pressing down on the trackpad (since that's what I'm used to). It's just incredibly easy once you get going. Swipe two fingers down the pad to scroll, swipe four for expose, tap with two fingers for secondary-click... it does more straight out of the box than my old highly-programed touch-pad. And after about an hour, the gestures become second-nature.

As far as the built-in speakers go, they're nicer than I expected, especially since I can't figure out how the heck they fit any speakers into such a tiny case. Seriously, it's like the whole case is the speaker. As I type this review, I'm listening to the album Paradise Lost by Symphony X and It sounds pretty good to me. of course, it sounds even better played through my Klipsch Room Groove, but um.. hey... they're integrated laptop speakers though they are very nice ones.

There are only two USB ports, but since the keyboard and trackpad are so functional, you won't need external input devices (though a number pad is a must for me when doing a lot of data-entry). I only use USB for external storage and synching my iPod, so it's not a problem for me (my iPod touch has a program that lets it act like a number pad when I need one). If I ever need more devices at once, I'll get a USB hub.

Now, it's confession time: As a Windows-centric IT Professional, I never liked Apple much, and I spent many years making fun of Mac and Mac users. When OS X came out, I couldn't justify further ridicule, so I just ignored Mac whenever the subject came up. After using Leopard for a short time, I can tell you that I don't have the appetite to eat the big heaping serving of humble pie that I'm owed. Leopard is slick and smooth and oh so fast. I'm truly enamored with iLife and iWork, and Time Machine is just about perfect (better than shadow copies, for the Windows guys and gals). It's packed with a lot of little things (like Spotlight and Preview) that are unobtrusive and helpful, which is a vast improvement over Vista's annoying and unhelpful features.

So, now I'm a happy convert. I still have two programs that are Windows-only (until I find replacements), and I still go back to my old (1 year old) laptop occasionally (for just the two, I don't want to bother with Boot Camp or Parallels). I hate going back to Vista after using my Macbook. Even though that laptop technically has higher RAM and processor specs than the Macbook, it's slow and clunky in comparison. I always sigh in relief when I can put it away again.

Bottom line: I love my Macbook and I wish I hadn't waited so long to make the switch. If you're worried about switching to Mac, visit an Apple Store even if you have to make a day trip to get there, it will be worth it. Spend a little hands on time with the Macbook, and check out all the free classes the store offers. If you buy from the store, they will move your files from your old PC for you (for free). If all of that doesn't convince you, then come see me, and I'll offer you a tall, refreshing glass of Apple-flavored Kool-Aid. :-)

Pros: GREAT OS

Lightning fast

Light-weight, sturdy unibody design

Attractive design

Dashboard

Incredible screen

Great trackpad

Good battery life

Keyboard is excellent

Magsafe adapter

Excellent iSight Camera

Boot camp available

Cons: Glossy screen quite reflective

Screen is fingerprint prone

No FireWire

Small amount of game functionality

Battery not as good as advertised

Distant longing for physical trackpad button

Multi-touch gestures not entirely spot-on

Summary: The new Macbook. It's incredible. With faults. That's all I'm going to say for my introduction. Read on.

Physical Specs

The product physically is very sturdy, thanks to the unibody construction. Normally the chassis would normally consist of various small parts. So instead of taking a small piece of aluminum and adding more aluminum, Apple has taking a big piece of aluminum and subtracted from it. Thus creating a sturdy, yet light laptop. I have heard that the aluminum interferes with internet connectivity issues. I do have to say, unfortunately, it is true. I put the Macbook and my old PC laptop side by side, and the PC was able to pick up better frequency and more networks.

Now for the multi-touch trackpad. It is made from glass, but it feels like there is a covering on it that doesn't nearly have the friction of glass. Clicking and moving the cursor is very easy and enjoyable, with the very large surface. Right-clicking can be done with by clicking with two fingers or by clicking one of the bottom corners after being manually set. It should also be noted that only the bottom 3/4 of the trackpad is clickable.

The multi-touch gestures are fun to use, but are truly unneeded gimmicks that could be done easier with a click.

I'll just go through the gestures now.

There are 2 finger gestures:

The first is scrolling with using two fingers by swiping your fingers vertically or horizontally depending on the page.

Secondly you can rotate a picture using two fingers apart and rotating.

The third gesture is holding the control button and scrolling vertically to zoom in on a page.

And there is one 3-finger gesture:

Swipe with three fingers to navigate. You can do this to go forward or back on a page, or changing a picture.

Lastly there are 4-finger gestures:

Swiping vertically upwards allows you to clear everything off your desktop.

Swiping vertically down launches Expose.

Swiping horizontally in any direction lets you change and view your running applications, which can also be done with command+tab.

On the bottom of the MacBook there is a panel that allows for easy access to your battery and hard drive. This will be handy to many people.

The keyboard is just like the Air, with the spaces between the keys. This creates a very nice typing experience, and are backlit if you purchase the 2.4GHz model.

A major letdown by Apple is the omission of a FireWire port. This is very disappointing to many people, but doesn't affect me at all. Nowadays the average users don't use FireWire too much. Although I do see this as a major problem for professional applications.

There is also a battery life indicator on the side of the base that glows green to show the rounded percentage of your battery.

Software and Performance

Of course the MacBook has the great Mac OS X Leopard software.

It is very fast, and has good security.

The battery life is advertised to have 5 hours of battery life, but Apple obviously means not being connected to the Internet, and having no applications running. You'll probably get about 4 and a half hours with Safari and other apps running. Unless you have a lot of apps on like me, then you'll maybe have 3 and a half to 4 hours.

With the NVidia graphics card, the screen looks pretty good, as do games. I do have to admit, though, the new MacBook Pro screen looks better, especially with blacks. Still, games really pop on the gorgeous glossy screen, unless you are in a bright area. The glossy screen of course attracts bad glares and many noticeable fingerprints. Still, if you are indoors or someplace with low light, the glossy screen is perfect. I mostly use it inside, so I wouldn't trade the beautiful glossy screen. Although for those coffee-shop typing folks, this could be a deal-breaker.

Other than these things, Mac OS X is the same, really.

Conclusion

If you have purchased a MacBook anytime soon, then I would not suggest you purchase this one. Most of the differences are the physical attributes, and the software is pretty much the same.

If you are new to Macs like me, then I would DEFINITELY suggest this phenomenal notebook computer. Of course it does have it's faults, truly I have never used such a simple, enjoyable computer.

(Disclaimers: I am not an IT professional so I cannot judge the Macbook's performance based on any technical standards such as benchmark CPU tests, etc. Also, I got the machine, AppleCare and full software suite at a student discount from my university's laptop program, which I take for granted.)

My first college laptop was a Dell Latitude D610. It was a fantastic machine for its price, doing everything I needed it to do. But recently I heard that PC laptops are only expected to last around 4 years before giving out, so I decided to take advantage of my school's discount program and buy a new laptop before I graduated. A tech supervisor I talked to sold me on the superior quality and durability of the Macbook, and when I saw the new line of Aluminum Macbooks on the Apple site I decided after a lot of research and thought to go for it. It arrived December 1 and I've been using it ever since.

All I can say is that switching from PC to Mac has been a revelation. The new Macbook is the most impressive laptop I have ever seen. It is supremely easy to use, with a much more attractive, centralized software handling experience than Windows. Below I give a brief summary of how my computing experience has changed for the better since making the switch to Mac.

-Portability: my Dell laptop was portable, but it was also bulky, heavy, and seemed fragile when I carried it in one hand. The new Macbook is slim, light and incredibly sturdy. For the first time I feel comfortable with taking my laptop everywhere, from taking notes in class to working on a paper at the library or dining hall. I bought a Kensington Contour Cargo Notebook Messenger to carry it in and it has enough space for everything I need to carry during my school day, including my laptop. I now have the complete portable college computing experience.

-Speed: I didn't take my Dell laptop out of my room very often because it was very slow to 'wake up' from sleep mode. The new Macbook both sleeps and wakes on the drop of a dime, making it a true notebook, i.e. a machine that you can jot something down on whenever you feel the need. That combined with its portability makes it the perfect mobile computing platform.

-Operating System: the Mac OS X Version 10.5.4 Leopardis a much, more more attractive, efficient operating system than Windows. The user interface is more intuitive, more customizable and more centralized. Even though I've used Windows all my life (I can remember all the way back to Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000 and XP) I already much prefer the Dock to the Start icon, the Finder to Windows Explorer and the automatic appearance of peripherals on the Desktop instead of the bubble 'New Hardware Found' option in Windows. Everything about the Mac OS X just works better. And now that the Mac is becoming increasingly compatible with Windows suites such as Office and Adobe, there's no excuse to hold on to Windows.

-Trackpad: I don't own an iPhone or iPod touch, so I only just discovered the magic of multi-finger gestures with the new Macbook's trackpad, and I am hooked. I just love the two-finger scroll option, and the four-finger Eclipse function is something from the future. I use it all the time when working on a paper and I need to quickly look up an article or dictionary online, while at the same time checking my email or playing albums on Youtube or iTunes. I don't use a conventional mouse anymore, except for playing RPGs. Trust me. The new trackpad is just that awesome.

-Screen: my Dell had a matte screen with good resolution for what it had to do. But the new Macbook glossy screen is absolutely gorgeous for watching movies or any other multi-media function. The picture is brighter, sharper and clearer. Users perhaps have a point that the viewing angle is small, but the only problem I've had when watching movies or using other applications is when I put my face down on the desk as I'm working, and I doubt many people use a laptop from that position. The picture is sharp and clear even from 'over-the-shoulder' angles from quite far away. Where the screen really shines, though, is with HD video. I watched remastered Star Trek episodes on CBS and it was a dream, along with HD trailers from the Apple website. If you're thinking of getting a Macbook, don't listen to people who say that the screen is terrible. It's not terrible. It might not satisfy the ultra-purists but for ordinary users the difference in quality is probably not noticeable. What IS noticeable is the difference in quality between a PC matte screen and the new Apple LED-backlit glossy screen that adjusts for ambient light. A final word about reflectiveness: the glossy screen is quite reflective, it's true. But the screen is bright enough to overshadow the reflections in all circumstances I've used it in, including outdoors in bright sunlight. Also, for me at least the reflections are like gestalt psychology: I can focus on the screen or on the reflections but not both at the same time.

-Keyboard: this will vary with people's preference, but I just love Apple's chicklet keyboard. I'm a fast typer and the easy depression and the crisp 'click' sound the keys make somehow just feels right. I feel more productive when I'm using a chicklet, don't ask me why. For me at least the advertisements were right: it is a better typing experience than the standard PC keyboard.

-Peripherals: I don't use any Firewire devices so the lack of a Firewire port has never been a problem for me. I never use more than two USB devices at a time anyway so the Macbook's two USB ports is just right for me. The only problem I have with the new Macbook as far as peripherals are concerned (and one of the only problems I have with the new Macbook period) is the lack of any way to connect with a standard AV/Composite input TV. The only media output peripheral is the new MiniDisplay port which with the right adapter can link with DVI, HDMI or digital VGA but not S-video. There's NO way to get around this, believe me I've tried. No combination of adapters will do the trick. This is kind of a bummer because I've become accustomed to watching Netflix Instant Viewing titles on an old Acer 27" TV I bought for 50 bucks. Those days are gone. But I'm selling the TV when I graduate in the spring, and by the time I get a new one it will probably an HDTV like Samsung LNS3251D 32-Inch LCD HDTV, so it won't matter anyway.

-Software: I can pretty much guarantee you that for any kind of application available in Windows, the Apple version is better. Safari is a far better web browser than Internet Explorer (although the free Mozilla Firefox is better than Safari), Apple Mail along with iCal beats Outlook by a country mile, iTunes is much better than Windows Media Player, etc. I even prefer the Apple version of Microsoft Office to the Windows version for its ease of use, appealing graphic user interface, etc. That combined with the overall superior Mac operating system makes for a much more sophisticated, delightful computing experience. It's fast and reliable. And when you think of other Apple applications with no obvious counterpart in Windows like iWeb, there's really no good reason not to switch to the Macbook.

-Compatibility: so far the only compatibility issue I've had with PC vs Mac is Netflix Instant Viewing. For a long time you had to have Internet Explorer to watch their catalog online. All that has changed now with Netflix's adoption of their new Silverlight based Instant Viewing player. Now Intel Mac users (and the new Macbook has an Intel Duo processor, see the tech specs) can watch the whole Netflix catalog online, and it's faster and more efficient than before. The picture seems to be a bit grainier than with the other player, but I imagine that will change. Printers, USB cameras, flash drives, etc. all work just fine with the new Macbook.

I could go on about all the reasons I love my new Macbook, such as the ability to link up with the iTunes playlists of other Macbooks and listen to other people's music, the long battery life, etc. but for now I'll conclude by saying that I am completely satisfied with my new toy. It does everything I need it to do and more. Ignore the naysayers, there's no such thing as a perfect product. Everyone will find something to gripe about. I think it was worth every penny and will serve you very well for years to come.

P.S. If you're making the switch from PC to Mac I strongly suggest buying or borrowing David Pogue's Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition. It will make the transition smooth and quick and you'll instantly have all the formidable potential of your new Macbook at your fingertips.

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook MB467LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop

I work as an IT manager, overseeing about 4000+ client computers. About one-fourth of them are Macs. I myself am a long-time Mac user, currently using a dual-quad Mac Pro and a 1st gen white MacBook, which I love both of them.

Full disclosure: I do not own this new MacBook (although I had planned to upgrade), but we bought several for evaluation purposes to determine whether they would be purchased in larger quantities. I have used one for almost a week now and have developed a love / hate relationship with them.

The Good:

The unibody is a beautiful design, and makes for a rigid and solid feeling notebook. I like the fact they've make it easier to perform hard drive and memory upgrades. The battery indicator on the side is a nice touch, instead of on the bottom, but I admit, I never used it that much, since I tend to check the battery life when it's on and I check it on the menu bar.

Once you get used to it, the new trackpad, it's a delight to use, and the new finger gestures are useful. The new DisplayPort also seems to work well enough, although once again, new adapters will have to purchased. Some people have complained about the lack of HDMI, but if you read the specs for the DisplayPort standard, it really takes us into the next generation of video display and is a better standard, IMHO.

Finally, the new graphics update is much welcomed. Graphics performance has substantially been increased, and the 2.0 GHz machines we're testing are pretty snappy when using graphics intensive tasks. We don't play games with these, but I'm sure gamers will welcome the change. Our Pro Apps are noticeably faster.

The Bad:

Naturally, this new manufacturing process has to cost Apple more, but we didn't except to pay so much more for a computer with worst [basic] specs than what we were getting in our purchase of the white and black MacBooks. Except for graphics performance, our CPU benchmarks are very lackluster in comparison. Our IT budget is very tight right now, and it's going to be hard to justify a purchase with so little difference in performance. Respectively, each model, compared to the MacBook model it replaced, is only 6% and 12% faster. These benchmarks have been independently verified by many Mac-related websites.

Several of our early testers are complaining about the ultra-glossy (or glassy) screen and the quality of the display itself. Our offices are brightly-lit and it takes quite a bit of adjustment to properly see the screen without severe glare. This isn't as noticeable in low-light environments, but we also see poor side-to-side viewing, meaning you almost have to look at these dead-on straight to see a good image. Comparing it to earlier MacBooks and MBP's, these new models are much worse. Fingerprints are much more noticeable also, and the glass front bezel seems to be a fingerprint magnet. That's not a big deal, but they complained that calibration doesn't help the color flaws in this new display. These use LED displays, as opposed to TFT displays that the previous MacBook had. I think it's just a cheaper panel, because other reviews have had no major complaints with LED displays in the new MacBook Pros.

Lastly, and most important to me as a technician, is the lack of a FireWire port. Many of my peripherals are FW and also I frequently use the Target Disk Mode (TDM) in my job of diagnosing, repairing, saving and migrating data from other Macs. Even though I had planned to upgrade, I now have no choice but to keep what I have. Also, our Media department will not be getting upgrades. They also use video and audio FW devices that cannot be substituted or re-purchased simply because Apple choose to leave FW out on this model. Not only is cost an issue to go to a MacBook Pro, but many of us liked the smaller footprint of the 13" model.

I find it ironic that Apple increased the graphics performance to use their Pro Apps more effectively, but left out the very port that is used to import the video and audio files for those Pro Apps to work with? Many of us would have even traded the ethernet port for the FW port, since you can get a USB to Ethernet dongle.

Also, since our department uses cloning software to quickly install drive images for our clients, this will affect us dramatically. USB, is not only much, MUCH slower, but less reliable. You have to turn off any software that may execute during the clone. In our tests, we found something as small as "Little Snitch" coming on during a clone install, is enough to choke a USB drive to almost stopping the clone process. It's a much slower and more unreliable process.

I know some people have stated that FW is dead, but no, it isn't. It is continuing to be developed into a faster standard. And USB-3 isn't a reality yet, so saying that USB-3 is coming anyway, doesn't do anyone any good at the present since only USB-2 ports exists on these models. And yes, I realize some people have never heard of FW and to them, this is no big deal. Although, part of the power, and reliability of a Mac, is the fact you can make an exact, bootable clone of your hard drive, and within minutes of a major hardware failure, be up and running, and continue to do your work, while your hard drive is being replaced. This is a powerful feature that some people will never know until it's too late. Granted, you can basically do the same from a USB drive, but if anyone has ever had to do so, they know how excruciatingly slow it is. And of course USB cannot duplicate the functions of TDM.

These new MacBooks will find buyers, there's no doubt that for many people they will be just what they need, and again, they are gorgeous and probably very durable. But people that depended on FW and have an investment in FW devices, will need to think long and hard about this upgrade. Also, I would recommend anyone wanting to purchase, to visit the Apple store and examine the LCD display for themselves.

Although a minor complaint, I don't like the fact Apple makes you purchase the $1600 upgrade in order to get a lighted keyboard, that's as bad as the "black" tax (the black MacBooks costing more). Using three stars as an "average" upgrade, I'm only giving this upgrade two stars because I feel Apple took too much away in relation for the price they are charging. This is unusual for me, since Apple products usually get my highest praise. If this were a new product line, without anything to compare it to, perhaps it would be different. But, the plastic MacBook continues to be the better deal for us at this point, although we will continue to evaluate them and see if perhaps Apple decides to release another revision with some improvements.

1/31/09 Update:

For those on a budget, and those who can live without the unibody design, but still wants / needs a MacBook, I encourage you to check out the newest refresh of the white MacBook. They have made some substantial upgrades but have still kept the price down to what is, I think, a very affordable, but high-quality laptop from Apple. We recently purchased ten of these and have been very happy with them. The performance upgrade is very noticeable, and we can still use our FireWire peripherals and display adapters. Since we are still using our original evaluation units together with our older models, we have also noticed better Wi-Fi reception on the polycarbonate models, as have other users. But, in fairness, I will say, other than a couple of issues (mainly with DisplayPort adapters and the trackpad), the new MacBooks have performed well for us, and we have not had any major issues with them.

You can find more info here:Display update:5/29/09

As I noted, the screen on the MacBook is just terrible. It appears Apple has updated the MacBook's display because of complaints.

From ARS: "Apple looks to have quietly replaced the LCD screen it was using on the unibody MacBook with an improved part. The updated screens began showing up in MacBooks made since the end of April, according to a report from Computerworld."

June 8th 09 update: In spite of those who criticized my review for my opinion on Firewire and the display. Today, WWDC announced the MacBook PRO 13", which replaces this model. It has the better display, same type as used in the 15", AND, now includes Firewire 800. With even more features, and at a cheaper price, we'll be purchasing some for evaluation, and I think it's now time for me to upgrade from my 1st Gen White Macbook that has served me very well. I hope to write a new review on this much needed upgrade.

My husband decided a laptop computer would be my anniversary/Christmas gift this year and he suggested I take a look at the Macbook because of all the photography and other artistic things I like to do on the computer.

I read the reviews on Amazon and it seemed to me either the reviewer loved it and made no mention of "firewire" something I had never heard of or the reviewer gave negative reviews and was mentioning "firewire" or the lack thereof in the new MacBook.

After my online research we went to our local Apple store to talk to a MacNerd in person and see the MacBook live and in action. The techy was super knowledgeable, didn't talk techy, and helped me figure out exactly what I needed from my computer. He didn't upsell me at all. I asked him about this "firewire" and essentially it boiled down to the fact that I didn't care or need firewire as all it was is that previous Macs had it so that you could hook your computer up to another Mac with this technology and basically move files/applications from one computer to another without a hitch. Given that I didn't have another Mac nor had I ever executed such a task, I wasn't worried about the lack of firewire.

I ended up with what I called the "entry level" Macbook...the one with 160GB, as I already have a 500 GB external hard drive that is fortunately compatible with both my PC desktop and my new Mac (a MyBook). I got a free printer/scanner all-in-one (after rebate), and I also purchased the Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel software as I just couldn't let go of that. I felt that the iPhoto software that comes with the MacBook was sufficient and if for some reason I needed more I could just use the photo imaging software that I have on my desktop (or always upgrade to Aperature if I felt the need). I also got a cool, snazzy little laptop bag. I was nervous that I would not acclimate to the touchpad, so we also purchased a wireless mouse. After everything was said in done, we spent $1800, but will be getting a $100 rebate check in the mail for the printer/scanner, so it will end up being $1700.

Since yesterday I've fiddled around and played with the new features and have been exploring in my MacBook. I haven't even opened my wireless mouse packaging yet --my first frustration was not properly figuring out how to scroll with my touchpad or "right click" a quick search on Apple's website under the Support menu helped me figure those out. I might end up returning the wireless mouse after all.

The battery so far is good and the first charge went pretty fast!

I've had zero problems with the display being too reflective. I've used it with a dark wall behind me as well as a big sliding glass door with lots of natural light and again, there was no problem at all. I haven't had to adjust my color/contrast settings at all, so whatever it was set to "out of the box" has been perfect. The only time there is a glare from the natural light was when I stopped using the MacBook a few minutes and it went "idle" as the screen darkens a bit which reflected the light a lot. As soon as I began using it again, though, the brightness went right back to normal and I saw perfectly.

My guilty pleasure right now is playing with the built in camera and putting funky backgrounds behind me where I get to pretend I'm at a beach, in Paris, or up floating with some clouds in the sky! My kids get a kick out of sitting on my lap in front of the MacBook and turning the background into a roller coaster. The background actually moves so it appears we're sitting in a roller coaster seat!

Granted I've had my new toy for less than 24 hours, but I couldn't be happier with the purchase!

The ASUS A55VD-AB71 is simply overall an EXCELLENT laptop once you get past one or two minor inconveniences. I bought this to replace my one year old Gateway NV55S04u 15.6-Inch Laptop that I also got from Amazon in 2011. My personal policy is to replace laptops within two years of usage but after seeing this ASUS A55VD and the specs it had I decided to break my custom and make it a one year deal. This is my very first time purchasing an ASUS product as I was skeptical about the brand at first since the name is never really mentioned in regular advertising campaigns in comparison to its rivals such as Acer, Gateway, HP-Compaq, Dell, etc. I have only had it for roughly a week but so far so good.

The good parts about the ASUS A55VD are the blazing fast Core i7 processor, the large 750GB hard drive and the IceCool Palm Rest. I was a little perturbed when I saw that the hard drive was split into two parts, a C: drive and a D: drive; the latter being for data only. While I understand this is for protective means in case of data loss or corruption I didn't find it necessary in my case since I don't believe in filling up laptop hard drive spaces as it causes eventual slowdowns. That being said I used the Windows 7 in-built Computer Management tool to merge the partitions together. I prefer it that way overall.

The memory of 6GB that it came with normally would be sufficient for the average user in conjunction with the Core i7 processor but my personal rule of thumb is to ALWAYS max out computer memory....or get as close to the maximum as one can comfortably afford so I purchased the Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9) kit at the same time and installed it. The system works like a dream no matter what task you "ask" it to do with this boost.

I usually have the laptop on for 8 or more hours plugged in a day so far and the heat levels are pretty moderate. I can keep it on my lap for quite some time and it doesn't get noticeably hot at all. Even at the bottom of it so kudos to ASUS for an excellent dissipating design. The lower right side of the laptop adjacent to the touchpad does get slightly warm when it's on for several hours but it's not enough to be an issue of discomfort for the right hand when resting on it.

There were two things I were disappointed with however the volume of the Realtek HD in-built speakers and the hybrid graphics of Intel HD4000/Nvidia 610M. Firstly, the speakers were allegedly to be Altec Lansing according to the info on the Amazon website but that is not the case. The speakers also sound so low even at their maximum that you'd swear something was wrong with your hearing and that you were prematurely going deaf. Even with adjustments made with the Realtek HD Audio Manager the sound increase was next to negligible. Thankfully, however, my years of gained pc skills reminded me that I could use external software to enhance the sound quality. For all those interested you can purchase DFX Audio Enhancer and SRS Audio Essentials. The combination of both have my volume levels for both music and movies operating at desired output levels....as far as laptops go at any rate.

Secondly, in regards to the graphics card, in no way was it mentioned on the Amazon site that the graphics would be a combination of Intel HD4000 and Nvidia 610M. It only lists the Nvidia. This disappointed me as I prefer dedicated graphics over embedded ones since the latter eats up part of the ram. Fortunately it seems to only consume 115MB of my 8GB ram. This isn't a deal breaker by any means BUT buyers should always know EXACTLY what they are getting before making a purchase. I will accept no excuse in regards to this from Amazon or ASUS.

Overall the ASUS A55VD-AB71 is a raging beast of a laptop. Just keep in mind that some tinkering has to be done to get it to perform at the optimum levels most enthusiasts and/or gamers are looking for when making a purchase of $700 to $900. Personally I got it at $729 which for a laptop this powerful is a real bargain.

UPDATE December 7, 2012: I decided to test the waters after doing some searches online about it and put in two sticks of 8gb each Corsair 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory CMSO16GX3M2A1600C11 and they took. The ASUS A55VD-AB71's Intel Core i7-processor and chipset can take 16GB of ram as indicated on the Intel website DESPITE the fact the ASUS website says a MAXIMUM of 8GB only. COMPLETELY INCORRECT!!! This will be a welcome update to those who are music, video and graphic artist professionals. I am loving this laptop more and more now.

One quick word of warning: You've probably noticed but Asus has a confusing range of nearly identical laptops with different model names. You'll find i7 and i5's in both the A55 and K55 models, all of which seem to come in mocha. Prices as well are all over the place, so double check the model and what all is in it! Amazon further muddies the waters with comparison charts that are incorrect. My guess if the swapped parts are an "upgrade" the specs don't get changed. Most changes I've seen are more RAM, larger hard drives and even CPU's. This review should be applicable to most of these models as the variations are so slight. Just take into account any particular area (storage space, graphics drivers) that is of importance to you in your next laptop! I'll go over this a bit more in my summary.

Anyway, for a sub $800 laptop (even sub $700) this is an *amazing* bargain. Most other brands in this range are i5 or i3 processors and typically have smaller monitors. Here you get not only an i7, but 8GB RAM and a 750GB HD. You may or may not have an option for an SSD I went with the storage as SSD's will be coming down in price as size goes up in the coming months. I do most of my work on a desktop PC I built myself (Asus motherboard natch!), but when travelling I've been sorely lacking in something I can actually be productive on. I usually borrow my wife's Dell Studio 15, which was just north of $1k two years ago with a first generation i7.

Fit and Finish

First up, the A55VD is a good size and has a truly handsome finish. The top cover is a tweed like patterned and texture that is slightly metallic and slightly matte because of the texture. I was sad to see it easily picked up fingerprints at first. I found it's some sort of release compound for the plastic that actually accentuated this. A damp cloth with a bit of cleaner on it did the job and solved that problem. Now it's the opposite in that regard! There is also a nice metallic looking Asus logo embossed into the surface. This textural solution is unique and adds a silky and even luxurious feel to the exterior, while resisting scuffs and scratches like metal type finishes do. Good job!

The sides and bottom are finished in a similar flat cross-hatch finish. At the bottom you find access to the battery which plugs in the back and has a release as well as locking switch. There's also access to the HD, memory and the ODD and a few vents and slightly exposed heat sink. The feel of the laptop overall leaves a silky impression, one of the better plastic type finishes I've seen.

On the left side you'll find a standard VGA port, HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 ports, network port (and cool little spring loaded door cover to keep appearances smooth) and power adapter port. On the right side you'll find the ODD drawer, a Kensington lock, USB 2.0 and headphone and mic jacks. Up front is a slightly recessed SD card slot. The back is the battery, which slides out drawer like.

The lid opens smoothly and easily with just one or two fingers no way to improve here. The friction is just right and it fits evenly with perfect alignment. Seemingly insignificant details like this do add up quickly and are appreciated. Once open, visually Asus manages to keep this laptop looking svelte by tapering the front and edges in at the bottom. This gives it an almost wafer like appearance raised above the table top. It looks much flatter than it really is.

The interior (business end) of the A55-VD is also quite nicely done. The quality of the materials and details again belie its price point. The front section hand-rest is a nice brushed aluminum finish with a nicely integrated single-piece touch pad. A row of lights are keyed with silkscreened symbols which is also nice. Quite often on other laptops I've had no idea the wi-fi was disabled until I actually check it through software. Nice to see hardware indications for key things.

Status Indicators:

The keyboard is slightly recessed surrounded by a matt plastic bezel. The speaker grill is above the keyboard as is the capsule shaped power switch with an oblong and subtle white power light. Thank you for no blue Asus! The monitor is surrounded by 5/8" of bezel and a bit over 7/8" at the top where you'll see the camera, indicator light and microphone. At the bottom is an inset metallic Asus logo. Things improve greatly when those hardware stickers are removed! I know I'm the type that wants to crawl over counter tops of shops to pull the POP stickers off of printers that are yellowed with age.

Hardware

Regarding the 3rd Generation Ivy Bridge i7 Processor it's fast. But!!! The Amazon specs say it's the i7-3610M rated at 2.7GHz or 2.3GHz depending on where you look, but the 3610M is a 2.3GHz chip. It's a Quad Core, 8 thread with a 3.3GHz turbo frequency and 6MB cache.

But!!11!

***That's not the CPU in this laptop!***

Sorry I went all n e r d y on you. The A55VD-AH71 (at least the one I just bought from Amazon) has the i7-3630M rated at 2.4GHz (3.4GHz turbo mode). So, it's a better chip and newer too Q3 2012. But, as new as it is it's still not bleeding edge it was displaced by the new Haswell chipset a month ago. And no, you probably wouldn't notice the difference! I don't think I would. Bottom line they're all fast and all good.

RAM: 8GHz which is pretty decent and while my desktop has 32GHz I don't foresee ever swapping this out for more. I suppose if you do a lot of video or photo editing, then the money you saved on this machine can go to filling it up. It's rated at 7.89GB useable, which is actually a bit more than I was guessing! Probably a benefit of windows 8? Oh, and so you know the windows experience index is 5.9. Processor: 7.8, Memory 7.8, Graphics 6.3 (both desktop and 3D/gaming), HD 5.9.

The 16:9 monitor 1366x768 (non-touchscreen) quality is quite good for something of this price. The viewing angles like all laptops today stinks. Compared with much older laptops all manufacturers are cutting corners here. That aside it's bright and vibrant. I'm used to an IPS panel, so *everything* suffers by comparison. The monitor's vivid appearance is enhanced by the lack of an AG coating (perhaps the same surface is being used on touchscreen models?). While I like this be aware that if you're using it in a bright environment (say windows are behind you) the reflections may be bothersome. The lack of an AG coating keeps the colors and contrast sharp though so there's always a tradeoff.

The Nvidia card does its job nicely for what it is an entry level discrete video card. If you're a gamer first and foremost you should look elsewhere or find a better card to plunk in. Photoshop CS5.5 and Adobe Lightroom take advantage of the graphics card and its 48 CUDA cores though! Here, it does its job and things move along nicely. Most laptops at this price are using the graphics driver off of the CPU. This isn't really acceptable for the purposes I use it for. If you're a gamer even more so. so this is a heck of a deal. For most users this will be huge in a faster windows explorer and smoother scrolling. The 610M supports Bitstream HD Audio and and Pure Video HD decoding all adding up to superior audio and video playback.

The GPU also employs some interesting technology Nvidia refers to as their Optimus technology. This basically uses the GPU for demanding applications but then employs the integrated graphics of the intel chip for more menial tasks. This greatly reduces energy consumption to conserve the battery as well as reducing heat. At least the marketing sounds pretty convincing!

The camera built into the lid is much nicer than I would have ever imagined. I talk to a lot of people on skype and this is amazing. It's awfully close to my stand-alone Logitech Pro 9000 webcam in (apparent) resolution. It doesn't quite have the capabilities for low light but it's awfully nice. Whoda thunk? Oh yes, there's also a little indicator light right next to the lens to let you know you're on camera!

The speakers are about on par or slightly better than I'd expect on a budget system but I'd just call it adequate. Built by Altec Lansing, they certainly can reach high volume. The overall sound is compressed in the upper midrange with nothing much else going on. Asus calls their system the SonicMaster technology developed by the *Asus Golden Ear Team*. Hmm. Perhaps break in is necessary and with audio this is completely within the realm of possibility. I'll report back if any changes! The Realtek chipset seems to do its job, and I haven't noticed any odd glitches, pops or other artifacts. Probably enhanced by the Bitstream HD Audio as mentioned above too. For serious listening, movies or gaming you'll want ear-buds at the very least if not a pair of headphones for a superior experience.

At first I was pleased to see a drawer for the ODD, anything to help seal dust out is nice. I've never been huge on the slot-load devices. The drawer mechanism is nice but about what you'd expect. However, it is quite prone to vibration. When I was installing my Adobe Suite CS5.5, at one point the disk went into high-spin mode and it sounded like a Cessna taking off. Simply touching the drawer or putting a little shim under the drawer side stopped the noise. You may or may not have the same problem it seemed to me a matter of tolerance in manufacture. This does not appear to be an issue at regular DVD or CD playback speeds.

The "ice-cool" palm rest seems to do its job. I believe this is in part due to the design of the chassis, and the way they taper the front and edges in. There is also quite a bit of ventilation up front. I can certainly say I don't notice any heat where the Dell or Toshiba Satellites I'm used to get pretty toasty. And in fact, the entire bottom stays quite cool.

As for the input devices, for the most part the track-pad works nicely and I like the "one piece" look of the flush fitting surface. You may want to disable the gesture controls I know I did! Every time I moved my finger on the pad it seemed to think that meant I wanted to go to the start menu. Agh!

The keyboard is one thing that took a bit of getting used to (for me anyway). It's the now ubiquitous chiclet style keyboard, which seem to require mashing the keys a bit more than I'm accustomed (coming from a mechanical keyboard). If you're used to this flat style of key then you won't have the issues your ham-fisted reviewer had. Overall the action is positive and consistent.

Something other reviewers have pointed out is that the 750GB drive comes partitioned. Yech. Some folks like partitions, some don't. I really don't. Maybe I just feel like I'm going to paint myself into a corner, but I like one big contiguous lump o' space. This is easy enough to fix in disk manager and was pretty much the first thing I did. My other complaint with the hard drive might be that it isn't particularly speedy. This is only really based on observations of program launch speeds. Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator are notoriously slow booting and resource heavy to begin with. Once up and running however things seem to be just fine. Saves and transfers all seem to be within the normal range as well. Here is where the USB 3.0 is appreciated with an external drive I had probably 250 Gigs of files I put on without issue. I'm also used to a SSD for my programs which is about as unfair as a comparison can be!

Now, I won't say that this Asus is as fast as my current desktop (or even my old one) but it certainly holds its own running memory hogging CPU intensive software like the Adobe Creative Suite or Lightroom. If you're running things like the Office Suite, browsing or doing light gaming you'll be delighted.

AC Adapter: This is the most amazing AC adapter I've ever used or seen. Just kidding. Ok, power section unplugs from the brick which is good (and normal). The laptop end has a 90° bend on the plug which is also good. The power cable is flat, good here too. The brick is small but not mind-bogglingly so. 5-1/8 x 1-1/8 x 2-1/4. Here's the gotcha blue light! at least you can turn it over so it bothers the carpet. The separate cables facilitate wrapping the thing up for storage or travel. I suppose the pudding I haven't checked the proof of is how much a replacement (3rd party or not) would cost. I've seen them go from $25 for an original Dell ($10 for Chinese knock-off) to nearly $100 for something that would just work for a Toshiba Satellite. The obvious weak link (as all of them) is the 90° bend. Time will tell but it seems fairly robust compared to many.

Finally battery life not bad! I've been running this for at least 3 hours now, and am typing in battery mode. Looks to be about 25% left. This includes some installs as well. I've never seen a laptop from anyone that comes close to the claimed times, but this seems to be right in there. It'd probably be good for 2.5 to 3 solid hours of actual work-work or a movie no problem. Yeah, I've seen 8-9 claimed. And they do have lots of technology to stretch the battery life. Seriously, I'd find 5 amazing. I WILL report back as I spend time with it "unplugged".

BIOS: Nothing special here American Megatrends and familiar for most of us. I can't think of why I'd need anything more powerful.

Asus is known for having some pretty amazing software that comes with their Motherboards. The A55VD comes with an assortment of Asus software, most of it is of questionable value, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it bloatware which comes with most laptops!

Worth mentioning:

USB Charger Utility: detects device type and charges accordingly

Splendid Video Enhancement: Allows you to custom set look of video playback

LifeFrame: Cool little photo enhancement tool that allows you to do special effects and types of framing to your video capture or photos. Hours of entertainment here!

Power4Gear Hybrid: basically a GUI for your power options and you'll still need to bring up the window for advanced options. Meh.

FreshPaint: huh, this is a windows 8.1 thingy and here it is! You or your kids could have great fun with this one. Ok, I had fun with it too. Yes, there's things Photoshop CS6 can't do here.

Utilities: Calculator and Asus Converter to convert metric whatever

Windows Utilities: They seem to have done all the scouring for you to get those little things you miss from Windows 7 and XP!

Instant On: claims to greatly increase boot and wake times while also backing up data when battery drops to below 5%. I'm not so sure about the 2 seconds from wake to desktop, but it's close. Boot times don't seem extraordinary but again, I'm getting used to SSD. Jury still out on this one.

Speaking of jury, this is of course pre-loaded with Windows 8. I have a love hate relationship with windows 8. I just built a new PC, and installed 8 which I also had running on my old PC (dual booting with 7). It is the future, for better or worse. I got a lot more excited about it with my new windows 8 phone this is where it shines. I'm hoping with 8.1 some of the rough edges are rounded out. It's not that bad and the problems I've had with it won't affect most people. Having a laptop that boots in less than 20 seconds is kinda nice. Overall there are a lot of things that are spectacular about windows 8 so the pros do outweigh the cons. Not by a whole lot, but they do. Really. ; )

Additional software includes things likeMcAffee Virus and Microsoft Office (both trials), Asus cloud storage and some other forgettable utilities and games. Shortcut tip! Windows key + X brings up contextual menu with Programs and Features at the top. Uninstall and you're done! Actually, I found the Office 365 suite is quite inexpensive compared to buying an old 2010 set that's licensed for only 2 computers. The office suite is $100 a year for 5 PC's and 5 mobile devices. I'm not a fan of the subscription service everyone is moving towards, but here it makes sense. Just my 2¢.

Ok, here comes two more stinky things.

No Bluetooth.

It's 2013 guys. We're talking what, a 50¢ part here? I know we're keeping the price low and I appreciate that but you've already skimped on...

No Master Disk?

Shame, shame. I think I'd pay for a physical backup how much do you want Asus, $5? $8? Cuz I'll like pony up for that one. I know you make it all nice and available online and everything but I'm a desert island type of guy. You and I and Murphy all know if something happens and you need it you sure as heck ain't gonna be in an air conditioned beachside bar sipping mai-tai's watching the dolphins pass by while surfing with blazing fast wifi. No, it's going to be whatever the polar opposite of that little scenario is, and it's certainly not going to be G rated. I want a disk!

Pros:

Great set of features for "off the shelf" laptop

Fast i7 3610M processor

Decent NVidia GForce 610M graphics

8 Gigs RAM

750 Gig HD

USB 3.0 x2

Good layout for connections

Decent monitor/very good color & contrast

No AG coating

Fit and finish as nice as $$$ laptops

Handsome smudge and scuff resistant exterior surface

Nice weight, balance and size

Excellent camera

Smart Login for extra measure of security

Good access to battery (which locks), HD and RAM

Great SD card location

Some pretty nifty software and utility inclusions

No blue light on laptop

Price!

Cons

Only 750 Gig HD

Partitioned HD

Only 8Gb RAM, both slots used

No Bluetooth

Some questionable software

No AG coating on monitor

Monitor only 1366x768 native resolution

Buzzy ODD drawer (at least on mine)

Blue AC adapter light

Mediocre audio (speaker) quality

No master disk (OS and software)

That's about it. For the price of around $680 (what I paid), it's outright amazing. It retains the "amazing" for the most part up to about $800, with a rapid drop-off after that. I'd certainly give this serious consideration for 8 bills. I compared this to a few $1000 laptops and some of them honestly didn't stand up in comparison. I wholeheartedly recommend this or one of its variations without hesitation. For instance you can save $100+ on an i5 version with a smaller drive. If you carry your laptop a lot and size is important, then check out the Asus ultrabooks. They're gorgeous (even more so) with brushed metal surfaces and similarly priced, but *much* thinner and lighter. Of course there's a slight tradeoff in hardware specs. Asus has really stepped up their game as of late in both innovation, products, quality, service and price. We'll see how that holds as the next generation of laptops and the Haswell chip are released. Competition is a good thing!

Overall Asus has done a great job in bringing an off the shelf laptop to market with some good compromises. As you've no doubt noticed when adding features in the "customize" section of that on-sale laptop that $20 here and $10 there adds up quickly to being no longer a budget laptop. Despite a few flaws very few actually I can't see how this does not justify 5 stars. In just price vs. performance it wins. The overall build quality and attention to detail is icing on the cake. I don't see how they do it. The only flaws or cost cutting measures are seen in my Cons list. I love this thing. 5 big shiny yellow Amazon stars.

Best Deals for ASUS A55VD-AB71 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I am what you call a tech guru. This laptop is awesome for 769 dollars. although the screen res is a little low for my tastes asus always comes out with quality hardware and I've never been disappointed. Great buy for the cost

Honest reviews on ASUS A55VD-AB71 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I have several Asus products and have always been happy and satisfied with them...until now. The touchpad jumps around, the Asus power manager interferes constantly regardless of the settings, video only wants to run on the internal graphics (one reason I bought it was for the external graphics) once it hibernates it locks up, sometimes to the point the battery needs pulled.

I sent it in for warranty and they received it 10/31. I got it back 11/27. They kept saying parts were on order. The laptop actually broke about 10/15 but it took about 2 weeks to get the paperwork all in order to their liking. Let me tell you, save every scrap you can showing where it was bought and when. They try every trick possible to deny warranty. First they wouldnt recognize Amazon as a retailer, then the receipt didn't have the correct info, then the serial number wasn't in the system, then no one could find any records. Each time takes a day, then you have to call back for a 30min hold.

Since I got the laptop back, it still does the software quirks but I have adapted myself to them. If this is the quality Asus now makes, I am very disappointed. I guess they will slap their label on anything to make a buck.

This is a very, very good laptop for the price. But I wasn't absolutely blown away by it, so 4 stars it is.

Pros: Extremely fast for a laptop. the i7 is brutal. I rendered 30 minutes of 1080p video in 15 minutes. (that's insane)

Dead Silent, and minimal noise even when you are maxing out the system.

The "Ice Cold" Technology really works. For the majority of the time, the entire laptop is cool to the touch. Sometimes the area directly behind the cooling fan will be a little warm when doing some major processing or gaming.

The laptop overall feels very sturdy. The keyboard is GREAT. I was a little worried about it being too small, but don't worry about it. They somehow make it work, and I can type just as well as any other computer if not better.

CONS: I can't really be mad about it, because it is as advertised. but....

The Graphics Card (NVIDIA 610M-2GB) Is very, "eh..." Definitely an Entry Level graphics card. For reference, I can play Amnesia: The Dark Descent on the highest settings. Spec-ops: The Line and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Star Wars: The Old Republic on Medium/medium-low settings. Games like Planetside 2 and Skyrim are barely playable at the lowest setting. Any higher than that, and you're out of luck.

The screen resolution is not very good. The 1366 x 768 (or something like that) can't show all that much detail. You can tell when something is in HD or not, but honestly it doesn't make that much difference. I would recommend hooking up to an HDTV with an HDMI cord when doing anything that requires you to see specific details. (Graphic design, movie making, photo editing, etc.)

Other: Here's my opinion on Windows 8; Just give it a week and you'll learn to really like it. That is, if you aren't into any heavy mods to any games or files. While I feel windows 8 is more utilitarian in it's use, if you are a hardcore computer user who needs to modify the system, I would recommend sticking with Windows 7. Unless you want the additional specs that come with the Windows 8 version, then just degrade after.

Overall great system, good performance, convenient function buttons not overdone. Light & slim, but substantial and durable.for a ultra. Minor negatives include no VGA or HDMI port for business presentaitons requires a purchase digital display adapter separately. Also, no true docking station, uses a port replicator almost the same except requires the user to plug in the USB 3 and power rather than a drop in cradle. I definitely think it was too expensive at $1600+accessories relative to the market, but I got tired of looking and my old laptop was struglling. So, I swallowed hard and went with the advice of a friend. At at a lower price point, I would not hesitate recommending this system for somone looking for a solid portable business system for routine MS Office type applications.

I bought this laptop from Amazon because I urgently needed a reliable Windows 7 (not 8) laptop and Lenovo couldn't ship for 4-6 weeks. I have no complaints about the machine but would have greatly preferred 8 gig of RAM instead of 4. Now I'm regretting it. This laptop wasn't cheap, and the memory can't be upgraded.

For the road warrior, this PC is a guilty convenience. Not for the entertainment consumer, this ultrabook is all about work. The fingerprint reader is excellent, the weight is awesome, and performance brisk. The only quibble for me is the lack of more than one usb3. Great choice.

This purchase was a disappointment. Within less than a month after purchase in November 2009, the wireless card stopped functioning. Lenovo/IBM Customer Service was slow to respond, provided inaccurate information and instructions, required that I pay to ship the product to the service center for warranty repair, and communicated a general lack of interest in customer satisfaction. Without prior notice, Lenovo cancelled the service request. It is now March 24, 2010, and the laptop remains inoperable for the purpose intended.

So many choices and options on these computers! I went with this one because of the quad core A8-3500 high end processor it seems most of the others had lower end processors, and for the money this had everything I wanted, and it's very light and thin as well. Boots up faster than any other computer I've owned I hope it stays that way!

Pros:

-Boots fast

-Great display

-Sensitive mic

-Great battery life

-Good sounding on board speakers

-Nice keyboard feel

-Amazing looking brushed aluminum finish. Pictures do this no justice.

-The laptop just feels very solid and well made

-Great sound through headphones

-Runs very quiet and cool

Cons:

-Typical bloat-ware with any new computer. Take 10 min to uninstall it all.

-Charger gets HOT

Other:

-I got this for $446 after taxes and rebate from a Black Friday sale. It's a great deal at that price. I'm not sure if I would have bitten on it at this full price, but after using it I feel it's well worth it.

-A bit on the heavy feeling side. I put this in other because it's neither good or bad. It feels a bit heavy, but it's the type of heavy that is comfortable and feels like a solid built unit.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion dv6-6117dx Quad Core 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook

I got this laptop on a deal at Best Buy shortly after the holidays. There's 2 memory slots, so I immediately swapped in an additional 4GB of RAM, and I haven't found anything that really taxes this system much yet. I really like the look and feel of the laptop, and (upgraded to 8GB total RAM) it is an awesome deal for under $500. I don't do gaming, but I do watch netflix and HBO Go, and that streaming video quality is great on this screen, although very slightly washed out.

Now, some of the negatives. The fingerprint sensor, which is used to log in to the computer and to certain websites, stops working every few days. A restart is the only thing required to get it working again, but in the meantime, if you don't want to restart, it is somewhat annoying to have to X out of the Simplepass popup screen that shows up ever time to go to a site that you've registered for fingerprint credentials. 2nd, I find that the touchpad is too large and in an inconvenient proximity to the keys. While typing I constantly find the cursor jumping to other parts of the text, which can be rather frustrating. 3rd, for a Beats branded laptop, the speakers on this are absolutely atrocious. I know laptop speakers generally leave much to be desired, but I also have an HP touchpad and the sound out of the tiny speakers on that tablet is 1000% better than this multi-speaker laptop.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv6-6117dx Quad Core 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook

Around Black Friday 2011, these laptops were selling for $430 at Best Buy. Some people were able to get them for between $370 and $400 as well. A month or so after Black Friday, Best Buy once again had them for sale at $430. When I saw the deal, I was very interested, but hesitated and Best Buy had sold out. I was disappointed, but hoped to find a comparable deal. Sadly, I wasn't finding anything that even came close to the DV6-6117dx's specs for that price. Luckily, I found someone who had bought a few and was willing to sell it to me for the Black Friday price plus shipping. I couldn't be happier!

Now on to the laptop itself. As I said, for the right price, this is an amazing laptop. Extremely powerful, super fast, great visuals, you name it. Of course this would be considered a "budget laptop", but it feels like much more than that. I should mention that I also picked up an additional 4GBs of RAM (Corsair 4 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9) for only $20. If you pick up this laptop or one similar, you'd be a fool not to double the RAM. With the 6117dx, adding memory couldn't be any easier. After adding the additional RAM, my Windows Experience Index went from a 4.3 to a 5.9. Also, I personally haven't done this, but I've heard that the AMD A8 quad processor is very easy and safe to overclock. This processor is rated for 1.5GHz, but I've heard many people OC it to 2.4GHz and above.

I'm not a gamer, but from what I understand, this laptop (especially with the extra RAM) will play most current games on low to medium settings. Not bad at all. And from my experience, everything else from web browsing to watching videos online is instant.

So in conclusion, if you can find this laptop for below $500, don't hesitate in picking it up. You'll be very pleased!

Just got this. Looked at it for a few days on to get detailed specs and customer reviews before purchasing. I only bought it on amazon because the next day shipping was cheaper (about $) and the computer itself was $ less on amazon.

Haven't pushed the pedal to the metal as far as ram, HDD, and CPU go. There is an overclocking speed (called Turbo Boost) that is automatic. With windows 7 (instaleld) the Turbo Boost app lets you see the CPU ramping up. It shows that the CPU rutinely goes up to 2.6 Ghz when opening an application (not very intensive work) so I am not sure how accurate the gadget is, but we'll see. When compared to what else is out there, this coputer has much more for your money and is actually cheaper than many laptops with less power/graphics capability/coolness. Look at the prices at Best Buy for an Core i3 laptop. They are nearly $1000 and don't have as much ram, video memory, or upgrade potential. This is a Core i7, much more powerful and is less than alot of the laptops out there. Plus, Asus has a 1 year accidental warranty. Tops!

Pros:

-Amazon said it would be Brown, mine was black when I got it. Brown is ugly anyway!

You can create a recovery DVD to fix everything in the event you scrw something up. Also, has a bootup recovery option built in, so even if you don;t have the disks, it can be recovered.

1 year replacement/repair "i dropped it in a pool" warranty.

-Shipping. For the price of the computer, get the 30.00 next day. I order by 3:00PM on thursday and had the computer booted up at 3:15PM friday.

-Nice looking computer. Great sound. Great price. (You can get a lesser model without the i7 CPU from Best Buy for 999.00)

-USB 3.0 is nice touch. Cool touchpad with "gesture" recognition.

-I like the screen. The resolution is said to be a little low/poor for the machine, but I do not yet find it to be a problem. You can zoom in and out using the touchpad and gestureing, so if the icons look to big/small, you can change it up without messing with screen resolution. Basically, you can keep it in 1377x768 mode. HD screen looks good to me. Bright too.

-HDMI output! You can hook this thing up to your big ass HD flat screen.

With Windows 7, some "gadgets" aka iphone style "apps" that can be installed to the desktop require 32bit. This computer has the 64bit Windows 7 so you have to do some playin around to get those gadgets to work. Pandora is one of those. However, you can have a applet for Pandor Radio on the desktop without needing an open internet explorer window. Cool!

POwer saving one-touch button. NOt sure how effcient it is yet.

So far, Windows 7 is not that bad. Yet. :)

CONS:

A lot of "bloatware" on this baby. You have to sort throught it all and see what you like/don;t like and uninstall whatever you can live without.

At initial boot up, 80 processes running! Ouch. 33% of RAM in use. That's over a Gig. Trim down the fat and you should be good.

-The first time I launched the "See how cool this Asus computer is" demo, I needed to lower the volume. Whn I did so, the computer locked up, blaring a annoying sound. I had to hold th epower button for 4 sec to turn off manually. Not cool. After that though, all seems cool.

The keyboard is a little cheap, has some play to it. Go to Best BUy and type on one of their floor models to see if it is bad for you or not. Not a deal breaker for me, but kinda lame. The "full size keyboard is not true, it is laptop sized with a number padd on the right. The arrow keys (if you play games or use spreadsheets) are small and you can easily miss them and hit the 0 or control key.

Cool!

A lot of Asus "this and that" programs to deal with. I uninstalled half of them.

BOTTOM LINE:

Buy it. Remove what you don't like. Great deal. If you were going to spend 800, drop an extra 2 bills and get this one. If you were going to spend 1200, save you money and get yourself a case for this one once you buy it.

My two concerns when purchasing this laptop were:

A.) The Brown Color (it looks pretty brown and ugly in Amazon's photos)

B.) The Screen resolution of 1366 x 768

And upon receiving the product, this is what I've found

A.) While it is brown, its a VERY dark brown that appears black in most lighting conditions. Only under direct light or white light does this even resemble a brown color. It does not look like that milky chocolate brown in the Amazon photos.

B.) The screen resolution (1366 x 768) is a tough pill to swallow. The 768 vertical resolution is really hard to handle if you are used to laptops with higher screen resolutions. The amount of vertical scrolling and real estate for multiple windows opened at the same time is difficult with this resolution. This is not really a deal breaker for me because I have this connected to multiple external monitors, but if you intend to use the laptop screen as your primary display device, this screen resoultion is pretty poor. Its probably fine for watching DVDs or playing games at high settings so the native resolution can handle it, but I would have really preferred 1600 x 900.

With that said, this ASUS N61 laptop is absolutely fantastic. The build quality is excellent. Its a very solid, sturdy built machine with no flex in the display or the keyboard. It looks great with a clean polished look without all the ridiculous gaming machine graphics all over it. It has better than average sound quality and the display (aside from the screen resolution) looks great. I found the battery life to be more than acceptable because this has a quad-core processor and a 7,200 RPM drive with a fairly small battery (I dont want a big heavy battery). I'm getting a little over 2 hours, which I consider very good all things considered.

I previously owned a Sony F Series laptop with the Intel i7 processor and the Sony had EXTREMELY loud fan noise trying to keep it cool. I was scared at purchasing another i7 because I thought they were all like that, but that is not the case with this ASUS. The fan is very quiet. At idle its whisper quiet and under load it revs up but its a lot quieter than the Sony was. It also has a special power setting that keeps it quiet (perfect if you are in dead silent room and dont want to hear the fan).

The i7 is an absolute beast of a processor. I am batch processing thousands of images, analyzing about 3.2GB of data in SQL server, watching WinTV, downloading huge files via FTP, and compiling C code AT THE SAME TIME and this thing never skips a beat.

Aside from the lousy screen resolution (why its only 4 stars) I am very happy with this purchase. I am so glad I returned the Sony F Series and bought this. Great purchase.

After a very bad experience with an Asus N10Jh-A1 and due to Asus having a good reputation for laptopsa second unit was tried, the N61Jq-X1 (A1 is same except for having 2 year warranty). Amazon has changed it's ad for this laptop since our company purchased this unit, as it does not have the TV grade, additional amplifier and cone speakers etc, which was advertised. Asus website still has these features listed, including a really nice video touting their laptop. Simply doesn't exist on N61Jq units.

Turned the laptop on for the first time, providing name /date/time, password and reached the create the System Restore DVD's (four required)part of setup. Inserted first new DVD disc and a half hour later, this laptop Blue Screened, BSOD, on SETUP. When finally back at the point of doing the Restore discs for second time, the second attempt to do Disc #1, few minutes later another error box and BSOD again. This is going well. Now on third attempt to do Disc #1 which started at 26% ?? and later, FOUR hours later, the four dvd backup discs are finished. Don't expect I could trust these discs to Restore anything. Day Two: ASUS was sent all the technical stuff (codes and information beyond my technical expertise, hoping only to provide Asus with information to fix the problem, OR be able to find out it's not repairable, information easily found using Windows 7 which I believe is the best thing Microsoft has done in some time and gasp! might even be better than XP. Four separate emails and tech numbers from Asus later, the Asus techs are still talking about SRS drivers and issues nothing to do with BSOD. Since initial setup, the unit in the past three weeks BSOD two more times while watching two movies from internet. Interesting only for having nothing to do with DVD drive in unit. The N61Jq-X1 as of yesterday is on it's way back to Amazon. Going to purchase a Sony VPC-F111FX/H or if Amazon takes forty days to credit the N61 like they did the N10, will order one directly from Sony.

It is likely in the universe of all the laptops which Asus produces that a couple of 'lemons' will come from their factory. Have two big issues with ASUS, First is their Tech Service from two different laptop, our experiences with ASUS Tech department in the past six months is deplorable. Second, I have a real BIG problem when a manufacturer touts features and hardware that is NOT actually in the laptop. Go to Asus home website asutech or ,, go to Products, to Laptops, Multimedia units, then click on N61, then click on N61Jq or any N61J code,, look at the Sound System you should have, Watch Asus video...THE SOUND SYSTEM, SPEAKERS/AMPLIFIER ETC. JUST ISN'T THERE. AMAZON IS CURRENTLY CHANGING SEVERAL WEBSITES ADS SINCE THE INFORMATION ASUS FURNISHED THEM WAS WRONG. INDEFENSIBLE TO SELL A PRODUCT WHICH FALSELY DESCRIBES THE HARDWARE THE CUSTOMER IS EXPECTING TO RECEIVE FOR HIS MONEY.

Just wanted to balance out the rave reviews,, I'm sure Asus does make some good units, the free information is always worth what it costs you. davzway/ TSRW INC

Honest reviews on ASUS N61JQ-A1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)

Keyboard:

Chiclet keyboard feels nice, the large keys and a number pad are great! When I ordered this laptop I was worried I would get the UK keyboard layout with the large return key and the backslash key in a inconvenient location. When I received the laptop I was pleased to find that it was the standard US keyboard layout with large enter, backspace, shift, and control keys which is a nice change from other laptop keyboards that have smaller keys.

Color:

The page says the color is dark brown but appears black under almost all conditions, a plus in my book. I had to shine the back with an LED flashlight for it to appear brown. I haven't taken outside in direct sunlight but it may appear more brown outside.

Build quality:

I would rate this a medium. It shouldn't break under normal use but it doesn't look as sturdy as some others. Very bright white LEDs on both sides of the laptop blink when in standy mode or when powered on make the laptop distracting in a darker room. I like the quiet fan volume. Even the DVD drive is fairly quiet. Screen hinges look nice and shouldn't break easily.

Performance:

Windows 7 boots fast! Windows Experience Index of 5.9. Runs most all modern games on high quality. Great performance for the price.

Ports:

Aside from the standard ports, this laptop has an HDMI port with audio out, one USB 3.0 connector, an eSATA connector!

Bundled software:

Comes with standard game demos, Office 2007 trial, and various ASUS utilities. Nothing special but not nearly enough to be considered bloat-ware. Comes with Windows 7 and driver re-install disc as well as recovery disc maker software.

Audio:

Great sound quality for laptop speakers. No noticeable distortion even at high volume!

Battery life:

Mediocre, I average about 2 hours in power saving mode. But what do you expect from a gaming laptop with an i7 processor? Get a netbook if you want battery life :)

Warranty:

Great warranty, came with one free year of accidental damage protection.

This Radeon 5730 is at least 33-50% faster than the nVidia GT 220, 230, 240, 320, 350 you'll find in similar under-$1000 LENOVO, DELL, HP competitors. Also, the 5730 is only about 20% slower than a GTS 360m, the modern over-$1500 laptop champ.

From continuous 24/7 use since my March 1, 2010 purchase, I have experienced no crashes, no bugs, no issues at all. I play all the modern STEAM games: AvP, CODMW2, Borderlands, DragonAge, Fallout3, RE5, GTA4, Crysis, Metro2033, STALKER, L4D2! Full speed. GT 360m laptop cannot even play minutes without overheat freeze/crash!
