I stumbled upon the bad reviews left for this laptop and felt the need to share my experience. I converted from mac, since macbook airs were exceeding my budget. I cannot do windows, so I installed the next best thing to macos: ubuntu linux. A review I saw online suggested installing linux on the build-in SSD drive, which is used for windows fast boot otherwise. It works like a charm. My laptop now boots super fast and stays super fast. It loads firefox in 4 sec (initial load, not from cache) under Ubuntu. Oh, I also did not have to load any drivers for Linux, everything just works.

All of the components of this laptop function flawlessly. The problems reported by other reviewers, such as spotty wireless, slowness, etc must be due to windows 8. It is not fair to blame this laptop for those. I also kept windows 8 and playing with it from time to time, and have not seen any problems there as well.

I like the keyboard and trackpad the most. They are very comfortable to use.

For this price, this laptop is highly recommended.

I usually think most negative reviews are due to defective items or people not using the product correctly. In this case, the negative reviews couldn't be more accurate and I have little to add, other than my low rating.

This machine has the most spotty wifi I've ever seen, it will connect to a network, then after you close the lid, putting it to sleep, it won't connect to the same exact network it was just on when you wake it up 5 minutes later (and I'm talking even giving it a full 5 minutes to wake up)! I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about 50 times, as it's the only way to get it to reconnect.

For a Core i5 with "ExpressChache" it boots up, and runs programs, slower than my wife's basic Core i3 HP Pavilion laptop that was half the price and has more USB 3 ports and an optical drive....

The customer service is awful. I never complain about tech support in other countries, as I personally feels it gives customers the benefit of 24/7 tech support, but when you can't understand a word the technician is saying and they can't understand you, it's kind of a problem. I'm used to them forcing you to try steps you've already tried before but when they don't even understand what you are saying when you try to explain what you've already done... Ugh.

Also, and I'm not sure if this was mentioned in previous reviews, the Samsung specific apps that come installed with the machine don't work properly. The "SW Update" (to update drivers and Bios and programs) won't let you hide updates you don't want, like it keeps telling me I need to reinstall the Norton Suite it came with despite my having another antivirus installed, and half the driver updates fail. There's even an update for the wireless card but it fails every time, even when I'm hard-wire connected by Ethernet! The "S Service" app (which is supposed to allow Samsung techs to connect remotely to your PC through the internet) starts up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads the update, starts back up, says "there is an update to this program", downloads it, restarts... You get it, over and over again. I let it do this for 5 hours hoping it just had a lot of information to download but it was still going!

Now my biggest irk. I called customer care about the wireless issue, which I've seen reported everywhere EXCEPT on the Samsung Support Webpages, and after a while I was told to send the Ultrabook back to Samsung. They paid for shipping but I was responsible for packaging the Ultrabook, where as most other companies will send you a box to make sure the machine is protected in transit, and told if the software needs to be re-installed, they will charge me $40 even when it's under warranty!!!

My advice, if you have the money to waste on something that won't work correctly right from the start, waste it on something else.

The X1 Carbon is very light, charges fast, and has the perfect screen resolution for it's size (1600x900). The model I purchased has an i7 / 8GB / 180GB SSD, so it is super fast. The keyboard is so much easier to use than the Macbook Pro and Air models, and you really start to enjoy using the touchpoint once you get used to it. It also is fully Linux compatible, so you can run Ubuntu out of the box.

Just got the PC, initial configuration was quite easy. If you are not used to a tablet environment, windows 8 is going to be a bit challenging, but nothing to worry about. There is a short manual for windows 8 showing some touchpad commands and once you access the first thing you will see is a dashboard, where there is a tutorial.

I got caught up by how beautiful windows 8 looks, and just by switching tabs you access classic windows 7 desktop view, which I personally believe to be useful while you become familiar with this OS.

The computer is fast. As soon as I completed the registration process I started to install essential apps for college like dropbox, evernote, chrome... They were set up and ready in no time, meanwhile I updated default apps while enjoying a Walking Dead episode. Gladly the PC performance had no issues with this multitasking. I did order a 4gb ram which I will install ASAP, since nowadays 6gb is the recommended memory ram, having a total of 8gb for $25 is a great threat.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 02/27/2013

-----------------

Just installed 4gb ram ((HP 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB 1333MHz DDR3-1333/PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM)) and I can feel the difference in performance, I had never install a memory in my life and with a little help from youtube I got it right. The PC was doing great and now is awesome. Highly recommended.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 03/18/2013

-----------------

It's been almost a month, and since day 1 I am waiting to see performance issues since, let's face it, the price is almost to good to be true. I found the following so far:

Wireless not functioning properly: While other devices in the same room such as two more computers and a x-box 360 are streaming videos, surfing the web or playing online, this PC suddenly stops allowing you to surf, or you see the download speed decreases to zero. I know a common issue where other wireless devices interfere with each other's signal but I can not confirm this is the root cause. So anyway, a few times I haven't being able to surf at all for a short period of time.

Touch pad does not respond: I still haven't figured if I am using a keyboard shortcut to disable the touchpad but, I am changing between tabs and different program windows and suddenly the pointer doesn't move while I am on windows 8 dashboard (software issue perhaps?), but the clicking keeps working. I fix it by pressing the windows key twice.

This one is a software glitch, so you can expect it and be aware it has not being fixed on windows 8.

Shortcuts can't be deleted: It only happened to me once, yet I read in forums user having the same issue where, once you deleted a program using the Control Panel, or just deleting a shortcut from your desktop which you no longer require, when trying to delete the shortcut it would not let you. I restarted my computer and the shortcut was no longer there. Just know that your computer is not the problem.

Here you can find information about the broken link:That's what I have found so far. I have already stored around 200gb in software, movies, music, regular PC games, etc. And the PC still takes less than 1 minute to start, which is awesome.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 05/20/2013

-----------------

**WiFi issues**

It has fail from time to time. The only trend I have noticed is when there is a certain update, the WiFi fails partially or completely. I have to go Airplane mode and resume to fixed it. Really lame when streaming.

Update and restart solves the problem as well but... Is just not right...

Since this is the only problem I have encountered and is not often I am giving 4 stars instead of the initial 5.

The laptop is not the most thinnest, but not thick. It is easy to carry. The Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but I believe that you will encounter that with anything you purchase with Windows 8. The battery life is as promissed too. The processor is fast and multi-tasking is great.

The only issue with this laptop is the speakers. If you are going to use it to watch a video or movie, or music, the sound will be better if you plug in your earphones.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion g6-2237us 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Windows 8 - 750GB

My previous laptop was an older Dell. So this laptop is quite an upgrade for me. If you are used to newer laptops already I'm not sure if you will love it as much as I do. Like all other reviews Windows 8 is a unique experience that takes some getting use to but with a little exploring you will. I do like how you can go to the OG desktop view similar to Windows 7. Setup is super easy pretty much turn it on and you are ready to rock and roll. I have always preferred Google search engine but I am already in love with the format of MSN homepage and Bing search. The only problem I've experienced is the mouse arrow freezes on me from time to time. I just wait a few beats and then it moves again but I wonder why this happens? Overall I'm very happy and would recommend this to anyone!

I bought this online on cyber Monday. I got it last Friday. Really cool lap top but not impressed with W8

I am happy with the hardware. Its slim, battery life is over 6 hours, with average use. I am sure if you were playing videos or games, it may not be as much, but I figured you may be able to watch a movie start to end without battery running out. It's light, screen gets really smudgy with finger prints.

so GREAT LAPTOP for the price point that I bought it for.

It has 24 Gig SSD drive for quick boot times, which I don't think is in the spec.

It has a back lit key board. The mouse pad it one piece but and right and left click are built in to the pad, so you don't see separate buttons. The right scroll feature is turned off, so you have to go to the mouse settings under control panel to turn it on. I like the two finger scroll and two finger click to get right click menu.

I have noticed some issues with few apps crashing, and even during the initial set up W8 encountered an error and ran me through the initial set up the second time only to duplicate the user account on the computer.

Screen is really nice and crisp. Webcam is average.

Not a lot of fan noise, but then again there aren't a lot of vents on this either. I did NOT notice it running hot or anything. Also the battery is built in, so you can't just pop it out.

Fantastic Windows 8 Touch Ultrabook by HP. Cyber-Monday was the perfect opportunity for this purchase. Our family purchased two of these devices. We would have purchased 3 but there was a limit. This laptop has all the performance and requirements you will need to do majority of computing tasks. Love the superfast 15 seconds Windows 8 boot up time...much thanks to the 32G hybrid mSSD cache. Benefit with a hybrid mSSD gives you more capacity with a traditional 500GB HD plus the ability to quickly start up your computer. This is the way to go for performance / capacity at a lower price. The Envy Touch Ultrabook does have some heft to it but not a deal breaker at all since the thin form factor design keeps it looking fresh and sleek. Build quality is well constructed. Backlit keyboard is a nice feature but the keys themselves could use some improvement. However, I did not have any trouble typing lengthy emails. Touch screen response is excellent and does not exhibit any lag or latency. Intel Core i3 performs well for web surfing, email, and multiple app operations. If you can get your hands on one of these HP Envy Ultrabooks I'd highly recommend getting one to start your Windows 8 touch experience.

Not much to say here for introduction, I guess if you are reading this review chances are you know why we professionals buy ThinkPads... ;) :P

Pros:

world-famous, excellent quality FULL-SIZED KEYBOARD (=essentially Lenovo built an ultra-portable road-warrior around a regular-sized keyboard sans dedicated numeric pad which is available as accessory)

COMES WITH ULTRABASE w/ DVD-RW dockin station (model #32492FU from J&R, at least) included in the box ($200 savings!)

Ultrabase can charge a second battery and sports loads of extra ports while does not block any on-board ones

runs COLD, even after 5+ hours

netbook-class dimensions and battery life but much faster than a netbook and it can pretty

very good battery life/CPU performance ratio with mid-range battery and fast (i5-540) CPU combo: I regularly score above 5 hours on WiFi with medium-light usage (VPN Client connected, putty/SSH, Firefox + Chrome, both running 10+ tabs and loads of plugins including Flash Player etc)

good weight at 3.xx lbs w/ 6-cell battery

Windows 7 Professional license included

decent-sized 320GB hard drive

finally a 'reasonably slow' integrated (on-die) Intel HD graphics core

full Intel vPro stack including vT-d (DirectIO) means future Citrix XenClient support (launches in October 2010)

excellent security: fingerprint reader, Intel AMT, optional encrypting hard drive upgrade

excellent status lights with proper 'icons', readable even with closed lid

very convenient, very useful ThinkVantage Tools: all updates, profiles, locations, warranty, support issues etc can be accessed by the push of a button

dedicated hardware buttons all around: radio on/off/ volume mute/down/up, ThinkVantage Tools button to access everything else

usual unbreakable ThinkPad chassis (though feels a bit less sturdy than old IBM ThinkPads)

mile-long list of options (accessories, warranties/support, upgrades etc)

and of course, built-in ThinkLight, a switchable LED light source for nighttime typing, checking card numbers etc! :)

Cons:

2GB memory -> Windows 7 Pro 32-bit preinstalled, you need to reinstall from scratch to get 64-bit (serial works for both)

no bloatware (no, ThinkVantage Tools are NOT bloatware)

wimpish battery life with 4-cell -> only buy it with 6-cell!

9-cell gives great battery life but stands out in the back and pushes the weight well above 4lbs

rather craptastic LCD colors out of the box -> run a calibration tool, it makes a difference though viewing angles etc won't be better (cheap screen panel tech:

X201/i is 'only WXGA (1280x800), not available with WXGA+ (1440X900) -> only ultra-light X201s got it but then say goodbye to webcam... dumb compromise?

personal grievance: Fn button is outside instead of Ctrl... aaahhh, you shouldn't use anything other than ThinkPade, period. :)

Summary: for $1,200 it is the best all-around ultraportable road warrior with the most power and longest battery at the same time.

PS: make sure you check your warranty status because J&R apparently screwing around with your dates, mine came with a June 2010 warranty start date, that's a 2-months loss right there... just contact Lenovo and fax them your actual invoice, they will fix it (takes some time.)

Warning: if you want to upgrade your warranty to ThinkPad Protection (accidental damage etc) you MUST add in the first 30 days!

I received the laptop and it immediately caused me problems; it could not find a Wi-Fi connection. After spending hours with my local internet provider's help desk, they eventually referred me to HP, assuring me that the issue was not with my connection. I already knew that since I have three additional laptops working perfectly fine. In any event, when I called HP they told me that they "do not offer assistance with set up" and that they can send someone out to look at the laptop but starting fee is $100. Thank god amazon allowed me to return the laptop free of charge (I had bought it from them directly)

I bought this computer last week as it jumped out as having decent specs with a reasonable price. I have no major complaints thusfar and don't plan on returning it.

However I wanted to document this in a review since I think it is crazy in Windows 8, the touchpad works, by default, as a tablet scroll. So, if you scroll using the touchpad (by touching it with two fingers and moving in any direction) then the page will scroll the opposite direction you swipe your fingers just as if you are swiping the screen. This is, in my opinion, stupid since a touchpad has a different intuitive feel to it than a touchscreen. Anyways, most computers allow you to invert the scrolling of the touchpad, but not this computer. It is annoying if you have two computers, like me, and they behave differently.

I don't think that should stop anyone from buying it but it is more annoying than you might thing.

The first one I received had a problem with the software which caused error messages and prevented back-up of data. The screen turned off for a few seconds if I touched it. A wireless device could not connect to the laptop via its ad-hoc hotspot, and HP will not help with connectivity problems. Returns are allowed within one month of receiving it, so I kept working with HP to solve the problems. I rated it 2 stars.

UPDATE 12/3/11:

HP replied to my comments above and offered help (again), but they still couldn't do anything.

Then I asked Amazon to send me a replacement, which they did, and it works GREAT! Amazon paid for all shipping, and they let me keep the first one until after I received the replacement! Amazon customer service is Amazing.

UPDATE 1/19/13:

After one year I am still very happy with this laptop, and happy with HP. The computer works very well, using a slow DSL internet connection, it is fast enough to watch videos. Any software problems are fixed online by HP, free for as long as I own it.

Bought one from HP for more cost, gave to my son. I liked it (got to play with it before giving it to him), and he likes it. Decided to get one for me to replace an older Toshiba (i7-740), which was very good 2 years ago. A gift card from my brother and wife brought the price down to "even better".

Pros: The i7-2670 is definitely faster, and the 4+ hour battery life improved on the Toshi's 2 to 2-1/2 hours. Get the 9-cell battery for an extra half to one hour over the standard 6-cell. The Toshi had a 12-cell, but the newer 2nd Gen Intel processor's technology is much more battery efficient, yet still has a noticeable improvement in processing power. Much less heat than the Toshi. My HP had a couple of items just one step down from what was on my son's, but otherwise identical. I like this dv6tqe very much, running Win7Ultimate, Cyberlink DVD Ultra 11, Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Norton 360. The 8 Gb DDR3 1333 RAM does a good job allowing multiple windows. USB 3.0 ports with external 3.0 hard drive transfers data up to 4 times faster than 2.0 in my real-world Norton backups, broadband, and photo transfers. Fairly easily set up, the fingerprint reader is a convenient extra layer of security.

Cons: The Beats Audio is a joke, the Toshi's Harmon-Kardons are MUCH better. Still, sound is ok for a knockaround laptop, just not very good for music. My son's has a 1080p screen, significantly better than my nice 720p. The 1366x728 (720p) is better than standard, but not as good as 1080. My son's has the 7200 rpm hard drive, mine has the 5400 rpm, so his response time is slightly better. I hear a clicking when it runs, indicating the head is moving, a very minor irritation. Windows Performance Rating is the same at 5.9, caused by the hard drive being the weakest link. But SSDs aren't yet reliable, large, cost effective, or durable enough for my needs, fast as they are. The dark umber shell and wrist "pad" show fingerprints (skin oils). The DVD/BD tray is still hard to open: the button has to be really depressed to make it work. The touch pad can be (seems to vary) VERY sensitive, so I use an external mouse. HP's Support Assistant took getting used to, not fully logical, but has some good information. Like Windows' problem help, all but useless. Bloatware was easy to remove.

As a result, I gave it 4 stars. It's a very good laptop (not for music lovers, middlin' for gamers) for everyday, general power use. Again, I like it for my uses. I've worked with computers since 1983 (a Tandy), and DOS through Windows 7(SP1). Desktops (currently a Dell Studio XPS 435mt with i7-920 and 12 Gb DDR3 1333 RAM) and laptops. Consider myself an advanced novice (maybe just barely intermediate), not a tech, but help many other folks who want computers but have no interest in tech. Amazon's price was right (especially with the gift card), but in order to get a more acceptable (buyer statistics) price, this particular setup skimps a bit on the components. Again, does well for everyday with a touch of power, cost versus benefit.

I love this laptop. Only issue I have and it was my fault for not reading more carefully is that it is larger than I thought. I should probably have gotten the slightly smaller model since I travel internationally a lot and have to lug it around along with its huge power supply. That being said, on the positive side, the screen is excellent.

First off, I didn't buy this product at Amazon.com; I purchased it refurbished from TigerDirect.com.

Total ownership: 2 1/2 MONTHS

The packaging looked close to retail, but with no markings or product logos. It only had one large sticker that showed the Brand, referb, and laptop specs.

All manuals, AC power, and startup papers were in the box.

Laptop seemed to be in good condition, with some minor cosmetic issues. The plastic border around the screen had minor scratches. (all around The screen itself was in great condition. Other than that, the laptop as a whole looked 4/5/

The reason I gave it a 3/5, if for what counts...internal parts and usability. There are 2 major problems I have with this laptop. First, the hard drive is constantly locking up and freezing the computer making it unusable until I force shutdown. I cannot Ctrl+Alt+Del, I have to hold the power button down to completely shutdown and restart. Upon restart, Windows detects hundreds of hard disk error, bad sectors, and corrupt files. It goes through fixing these errors before restarting and booting into Windows. This happens several times a week, sometimes several times in hours! I don't know if they shipped it with a faulty hard drive or it might be the laptop itself. I haven't had time to do further tests. Either way, this shouldn't be happening 2 months into ownership.

Second issue, the Wi-Fi cuts off for NO reason and can NOT be turned back on using the shortcut keys. I tried updating the drivers. Looking for drives on the ASUS site and Wifi vendor site. Same problem. To fix this temporarily, I have to restart and sometimes this fixes the issue. It's hit or miss. Sometimes after restart it doesn't turn on automatically, so when I shortcut key it, it freezes the computer and I have to restart until they turn back on. VERY FRUSTRATING!

I purchased this laptop in September of 2011. I had an occasional blue screen shut down even early on, but didn't return it because I could deal with it and thought that it was to be expected once in a blue moon. More recently I had a problem where it wouldn't detect my wireless adapter, then it would get blue screens more and more regularly, but it was outside of the warranty window. I now have a sleek looking brick that won't even turn on. I will be wary of refurbished products on Amazon from now on.

I use both Mac and Windows computers but when it came to finding a small computer for travel the Lenovo came out at the top of my list. I wanted something lighter than my 15.4 inch laptop. I also wanted to get a netbook from a company with a good track record for service which eliminated Dell and Asus from the list.

The Lenovo at 3.5 lbs is light and the 11.6 screen is XGA at 768 vs 600 lines of resolution. It has a separate AMD graphics processor which definitely helps with performance. The netbook does support two 4GB RAM modules for a total of 8GB of RAM.

It has WiFi with excellent reception and with 802.11n it is much faster than my old WiFi laptop. It also has a 1GB Ethernet connection which I use when transferring large files from a desktop computer to the netbook before a trip. The speed difference of the 1GB Ethernet is very noticeable and cuts file transfer times by 90%.

The keyboard is outstanding and has to be used to be fully appreciated. It has the action of a top quality aftermarket desktop keyboard and much better than any other I have used from HP-Compaq, Apple, Dell, or Toshiba. With a reduced size keyboard the extra feel of the Lenovo is much noticed and much appreciated. The best part is the pointer in the center which I find much easier to use than a touch pad when I cannot use a mouse, as when strapped into an aircraft at 30,000 feet.

The netbook also includes a SD card reader which some people may find useful. It has a HDMI port which I do find useful when traveling. I can take a HDMI cable and hook the netbook up to the LCD televisions I find in most hotel rooms.

All in all this laptop has met my needs, both for functionality and price. I didn't want to spend more than five on a laptop, and this was the perfect price for my needs and use.

I bought this for its:

1. speed (faster than my previous Atom-based netbook),

2. larger screen (11.6 is way better than 10.1)

3. matte screen (I don't like glossy displays) and

4. overall professional look.

Modifications I made:

1. Installed additional 4GB for a total of 6GB. Installation is very easy.

2. Switched the Fn and Ctrl keys virtually in the BIOS (there is a option), and physically by snapping them off with a credit card and snapping them into the switched locations. Now I have the Ctrl key in the bottom left, which is where most laptops have it.

What bothers me:

1. The fan (air-flow) sound level is relatively high, but am getting used to it. I subtract 1 star because of this.

2. An occasional 'clunk' sound from the hard drive sounds like a billard ball or mable dropped on a floor. I've researched this a bit looks like many disk drive brands have this issue could be fixed by firmware, but doesn't apparently affect the drive long term. However, I do backups regularly to make sure I don't lose any data.

Bonus:

1. Only slightly heavier than my previous Atom-based netbook, it is noticeable, but tolerable.

2. There are 2 sets of right and left mouse buttons at the top of the touchpad (for use with the trackbutton) and bottom of the touchpad (for use with the touchpad itself.) I'm getting used to using both sets.

Bottom line:

Better-than-netbook and almost-a-laptop. It's been a month or so since I bought this and I'm happy with it.

Cheers!

Specs alone tell a tale of incredible value:

7200RPM HDD (2.5" SATA drive compartment, so it'll take an SSD).

1.6GHz AMD E-350 dual-core processor within a 64-bit chipset.

Support for up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

Dedicated Radeon HD 6310 graphics processor.

Matte/antiglare HD display.

6-8 hour battery life.

VGA & HDMI output.

All for less than $250 (lightly used or refurbished on eBay).

This laptop is an absolute powerhouse. Performs as well as, if not better than, anything running an Intel Core i3 with similar components. Plays modern PC games (with the obvious exception of stuff like Crysis) at around 40-50 frames per second on low settings. Nothing special, but entirely playable and certainly impressive for a computer of this price and stature. I personally use it to produce & perform with Ableton Live & FL Studio (with a larger external monitor of course).

Highly demanding tasks aside, this computer is an absolute must-buy if you're in the market for an ultraportable device.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad X120e 0596A28 11.6" LED Notebook E-350 1.6GHz

In simple terms:

Nice hardware. Definately Lenovo is pulling out well built stuff. I've used IBM/Lenovo for many years at the office; that's why I purchased this for my wife.

If you're looking for a netbook kind of use equipment; this a netbook killer. However, for the specifications and price (this is a Notebook, not a Netbook!)I expected faster performance. We actually use it for browsing purposes and a few Home-Office features and yet, not the expected performance for such simple tasks.

Finally, the battery. Regular use, mostly connected. Two months and it doesn't hold a charge for more than 1 hour. It could be a defectous one; however, it happened to be in mine.

Hope the review is useful.

Great design. A bit slow at booting up. Unfortunately, it came with a 5400 rpm hard drive instead of the 7200 rpm I assumed would be there. No biggie. Once the thing gets going, it works great!

This laptop really lives up to its description: ultra portability without sacrificing performance. I'm posting this review after a week of ownership.

PROS: Awesome aluminum design, bright display, bluetooth, good webcam, 7200rpm HD, fast processor, runs cool, great WiFi range, good battery life, lightweight (4.41 lbs), fingerprint reader, sturdy, WiDi, HP QuickWeb

CONS: Touchpad gestures, keyboard stiffness, mediocre audio, dvd eject button

* MY PERSONAL NEEDS:

My focus while searching for a new laptop was for portable productivity including office and business applications, software development kits (I'm a programmer), and presentations. I was looking for something with decent processing power to handle multiple applications. What I was not looking for was a gaming machine. The graphics card was therefore somewhat irrelevant. This dm4-1160us by HP stood out because it offered a great processor, Bluetooth, a good webcam, and decent battery life in a light and perfectly manageable package.

* FIRST IMPRESSIONS UPON OPENING:

From the start I knew this was the laptop for me. The aluminum finish, including the design that complements it, is truly a work of art in terms of both aesthetics and practicality. Most modern laptops have a glossy finish that attract fingerprints seemingly even when you're not touching it. This is the complete opposite offering a sleek and professional look without constantly having to wipe it down. During the first few hours of personalization I noticed no hint of heat nor slow down of any kind. It has been quick from the start. Boot up times are average, but perfectly reasonable and even quicker if you take advantage of HP's QuickWeb feature that lets you use some common applications without booting into Windows. The screen is plenty bright and has a very nice and crisp picture. It is better than my Samsung r480 and older Toshiba Satellite, and on par with my older Core 2 Due HP model. If anything the screen on this one is just a bit less reflective than the one on my older HP, which is a good thing.

* PERFORMANCE:

This is my first experience in personally dealing with Intel's new i3/5/7 series processors, and I have to say it exceeded my expectations. In the past couple years the only machines I built were made for gaming, and AMD processors are perfect for affordable gaming machines. While I still believe that AMD is better than Intel cost/value speaking for gaming, I always stick with Intel when building a machine for true intensive multitasking. Even with running multiple applications including some processor heavy development kits, Adobe CS, and other software simultaneously, the laptop runs without a glitch and without producing any noticeable heat nor noise. The Core i5 is definitely a step up from the Core 2 Duo series, and a significant one from the previous dual core T-series that can still be commonly found on the market today.

4GB of memory has become the standard in the laptop market, and there isn't much to say about that other than it works. However what isn't common is a 7200 RPM hard drive in a laptop (especially one with a good battery life). If you don't do much in terms of file transfers you probably won't really benefit nor notice, but it is definitely a plus for me where I'm constantly transferring files for projects back and forth.

The integrated graphics certainly isn't a selling point, but it gets the job done unless you're planning to use it for modern full screen gaming. It will play most games, but you'll have to scale back the settings. If I want to play a graphics intensive game I'm going to do it on a desktop with a larger monitor anyway, so this wasn't a selling point one way or the other. Something I found odd was that the Windows Rating System gave the graphics a higher rating for gaming than it did for Aero (desktop and productivity), but in my experience so far it has managed everything just fine including Adobe, movies, and a couple simple games that I tried out to test the display. I will say that most of the laptops I've owned/used have had integrated graphics, and even so this laptop still feels quite a bit quicker in all aspects. If it were compared to another version of itself with a dedicated card then you would notice a difference, but it is not underpowered by any means.

* TOUCHPAD:

Many people are commenting about how the touchpad is finicky and hard to use, especially when keeping a finger on the mouse button. I don't personally have the same issues and am able to use the touchpad easily. In fact I purposefully attempted to duplicate the problem myself and was unable to see why there's so much trouble over it. And I rather like the textured feel of it and prevents fingerprinting and makes it easy to keep track of. However I really don't like the gestures. Macs do a way better job of handling the two finger slide scrolling and pinch to zoom features. I didn't even think of this option when buying, but since they are there they are tempting and they don't work quite right. The mouse buttons themselves are a bit harder than average to press down but I prefer the tap method anyway.

To comment on some of the other reviews, I don't think it is fair to expect a touchpad to be great while playing games. I've never seen someone successfully play a first person shooter with a touch pad nor would I use it for longer periods of time in CAD or other design software. For simple adjustments in Adobe I find it to work fine, not really better or worse than other laptops.

* KEYBOARD:

Here is where I am having some trouble. The keyboard layout for me is perfect and I like the gap in between the keys. But just as the touchpad buttons are a bit harder than average to press down, I found that the keyboard keys are a bit stronger than average and take a slightly more aggressive press. If you're a heavy typer you probably won't notice. When I get going pretty good my typing speeds are in the 80-90+ WPM range. I am more of a light typer though and have gotten very used to only pressing down as far/hard as necessary and nothing more. Since I am so accustomed to using laptops with keys that are easy to press, this will take me some more time to get used to. I almost wonder if it is just the one I have and it isn't supposed to be that way.

* SOUND:

The sound is not bad. There were more than a few reviewers throughout my search that complained about the sound quality in this laptop. I have used many different laptops and I don't think the sound from this laptop is any worse than the average laptop. Laptops don't produce good sound. That is just how it is, especially when they only weight 4.41 pounds. It does state that there are Altec Lansing speakers on the laptop, but that doesn't mean anything. The only laptops I have used that had decent sound are the bigger ones that have more room for bigger speakers. The speakers on this 14" are still good enough to enjoy a show or have some background music going while you work. For those of you who are still looking around, I would note that HP's higher models with "Beats Audio" aren't anything spectacular either.

* BATTERY LIFE:

Depending on where you look, the battery life on this laptop is rated between 6 and 6.5 hours. With wifi and bluetooth off and just using normal productivity software I think that is a fair assessment, which I think is how they rate it anyways. I haven't had enough time to truly test the battery life in real scenarios, but it seems like I can get a solid 4-6 hours of use while running my presentation software and at least Bluetooth (I use my phone as a remote controller).

* CONCLUSION:

If you are looking for a productivity laptop that is ultra portable and a great value, get this one. There aren't many features missing unless you're after a built in Wi-Max card or want a Blu-Ray player, and it is definitely feature rich for the price range. The finish both inside and out is brilliant and it is pleasing both through its looks and performance.

I would not recommend this laptop if you want a gaming laptop. There are plenty of options from HP and other brands that have dedicated graphics cards with moderate to good battery life. It does not have a dedicated graphics card, wimax, blu-ray, nor numpad, in case you're looking for those features.

I won't bother telling you how powerful, quiet, and lightweight this machine is. People seem to just want to focus on the touchpad. Maybe early runs of it had problems, but mine works perfectly. The only quirk is that if you have two fingers on the touchpad at the same time, and try to move the mouse, you get this fricking 4-headed arrow that has crazy effects (in chrome, it increases and decreases the font size). Just make sure that one finger stays on the mouse button, and another finger can move the mouse. The problem arises because there is no tactile border between the mouse buttons and the touchpad, so if you are careless, you can end up with two fingers on the touchpad, and.....chaos. It took me about 7 minutes to figure out that if you keep your index finger on the lower half of the mouse button (which you *can* feel) then it's easy to move the mouse with another finger and have no problems. I actually find the touchpad quite responsive.

I love this machine, and think it is a steal for not much more than $700. Maybe it's not for everybody, but don't let rumors of touchpad issues dissuade you.

(paid $700) Bought this guy about a week ago. It has excellent styling and feels very solid. The keyboard is awesome, but the touchpad can be a bit finnicky. Although it's nothing a few days of getting used to wouldn't fix. I use my laptop for school and Photoshop CS5. It has an awesome battery life which has already given me four and a half hours of youtube/browsing use. The battery life keeps getting better, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets close to the promised six. It stays very cool, and mostly quiet. Even when the processor kicks into high gear it is barely discernible. It feels very snappy and handles photoshop quite nicely for a laptop. For most of your editing, including assembling HDR and using photomerge it does just fine. To give you an idea, I merged 22 raw files the other day with a fairly complex background, it did it in about a minute. The sore spot is the lack of dedicated graphics. Many game's are still playable, but you'll have to scale back the settings. Civ V runs super smooth on low and is completely playable on medium. SC2 runs great on low. However the snappy performance in other tasks and the great battery life more then make up for the poor graphical performance.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dm4-1160us 14-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 6.25 Hours of

This sleek, thin, powerful laptop is everything I wanted but never had the time to buy before. I'm a software engineer that works on computers practically every day. Prior to now, I've just assembled my own desktops for home use and used my work laptop for mobile personal computing. IN my hopes to finally transfer all of my personal computing to my own personal machines, I decided to get myself the least bulky, but most powerful laptop I could for as far under $1000 as I could get it.

This laptop is awesome. It's thin, light, and does everything I want it to do. For those who wish to compare their typical personal computing activities to mine, mine consist of:

1) General internet browsing (paying bills, checking email, shopping, Facebook, etc.)

2) Streaming video/music over the internet (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, iTunes, etc.)

3) Watching DVD movies

4) Playing not-too-complex computer games (nothing needing major graphics power just yet)

5) Creating/editing MS Word or Excel document (journals, budgets, etc.)

6) Downloading digital pictures from cameras & uploading them to the internet (with mild editing in between)

7) Backing up my files to an external USB hard drive (I don't like holding all of my eggs in one basket)

This computer does all of this with ease and is actually attractive to look at. The system also has built-in microphone and camera, which I'd love to use but haven't gotten around to it yet.

HP's site has these exact same systems for their "quick ship" options (systems that are already assembled as supposed to the ones they have to 'build' and then ship to you), but Amazon had this one for less PLUS I was able to take advantage of my Amazon Prime free 2-day shipping! All in all, getting this machine was a great choice and I'm loving every minute of it.

NOTE: The fingerprint swiper can be a bit sensitive, so you may have to 'swipe' your finger numerous times for it to get it. I recommend programming more than just one fingerprint into the system so that you have multiple ones to choose from.

I was looking for a 14 inch laptop to replace my 5yr old HP DV1000 laptop. I wanted something that is light and with an i5 processor. I came across the dm4-1160us and found that it has all that I was looking for. The listed price on amazon.com was $829.99 at the time. My previous laptop was still working fine and I was not in a hurry to get the new one. So I thought I would wait till thanksgiving to see if I could get a better a better deal on it. A couple of weeks later the laptop was listed on sale @ staples for $700.00 with rebates. I went and got the laptop the same day.

I read a lot of reviews on this laptop and the greatest concern for me was that some people were complaining that it looked pink. So when I went to the store the first thing I checked out was the color and I was disappointed in that it looked pink. But the sales associate told me that it is due to the lighting in the store and the true color of the laptop is a tint of bronze. So I bought the laptop thinking that i would try it out and return it if I didnot like it. I am so glad that I bought the laptop. When I opened the box at home, the laptop did not look anywhere near pink in color. All my friends liked the color and design of the laptop.

I had the laptop for almost a month now and I am very pleased with it. It was the best deal I could have gotten for such a good performing laptop. I would recommend this laptop who wants a good performing light weight laptop.

The only cons that I have with this laptop is with the fingerprint reader and the multitouch functions of the trackpad. You could setup the fingerprint reader to log you into any website. I do not wish to use this setting and have not set it up. So each time I go to a webpage that needs login a pop-up appears asking me if I want to enroll in the automatic log-in. I just find that annoying, I'm pretty sure I can disable it, but haven't got around to it yet. Also, the multi-functioning on the trackpad is not as good as on a macbook. But these are not major concerns to me.........and I think this is the best laptop for the price in the market now.

I bought this computer from wal-mart... it is the best, it is fast, and so many features, that i still have not played with.. it has the best webcam i have ever seen, as it is called TrueVision... i love the pattern.. I wish the keyboard lit up, some buttons do. It is so light. Perfect size. I thought with being white it would get dirty(the keys) but it doesn't... a little windex on a rag and it's clean.. I love all the things that are loaded on here. Netflix is great. also it has a built in browser, so if you don't want to use IE.. then you can set the HP browser up and it loads very fast. It comes with so many great wallpapers, and windows 7 is awesome... I use ROCKMELT browser and it works great.. This netbook is so fast love it,love it....you will enjoy it, as i do

As soon as I seen this laptop, I wanted it! I love the fun colors, who says a computer has to look boring? It has everything I wanted in a computer. The HP TrueVision WebCam is awesome to use. I am still playing with the different graphics that can be added to pictures. I am a member of Netflix and I like the fact that there is an easy way to get there with an Icon already built-in with the HP dock.

Only had the computer for about a month now and I am still learning new things that this little bundle of joy can do. I enjoy taking it where ever I go and getting different reactions to the outter shell. Even my two younger sisters want to copy me.

After reading the negative comment for this computer I felt the need to leave a review that was true to my own experience. I have now had this computer for over a year and have had absolutely NO problems with it!! I have used it in high school and through my first year of college and it never fails me. Despite it's terribly cute cover, it is fast and convienient! I especially love the fun features with the camera! I have experienced none of the problems with the touchpad, memory, speed or anything else for that matter as stated in one of the negative reviews!! I have even accidentally dropped it on it's corner before on a concrete floor, and still no problems! Not that I suggest that of course;) Overall it has been a wonderful computer to me and I get lots of compliments on the unique cover!!
