UPDATE 10/16/13: I've had this system for a couple months now. It's still running really well, I'm glad to say. I've had no problems at all aside from drivers needing updating, so I stand firm on my 5 stars. Judging from other reviews people have given, there's a risk of getting a bad one, but that's a risk you ALWAYS take when buying computer hardware. The majority of problems people have appear to be software/OS issues (I've seen Internet Explorer pop up the most in these complaints, so people, please, don't use IE for anything other than getting another web browser. It's not worth the headache.) So once again, I highly recommend downgrading to Windows 7, or at the very least, install the updates for Windows, then update all the drivers, and make sure that's the first thing you do when you boot it for the first time. I think that would've solved a lot of problems people were having.
I also want to add that my battery life is CRAZY. I can sometimes get 6-7 hours out of it on a full charge. Since there have also been complaints about short battery life on this system, I don't know if I got lucky, or if they (again) just got bad units. Either way, I love this laptop and I'm very happy with it, so I still very much say if you want a good priced system with some power to it, this is it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I bought this laptop after two days of careful research. I know some people can't be bothered to read through a whole review, so here's a quick pros/cons list:
Pros:
Lightweight, slim, very portable
Great hardware, especially for the price
Charges quickly
Touch pad actually works well
Four speakers, so the sound is pretty good
Cons
WINDOWS 8.
The keyboard keys take a little bit of getting used to
Takes a little force to get usb drives into the ports, but just for the first couple times
Video chipset uses system RAM if it needs additional video memory, so expanding the RAM comes suggested
I know computers pretty well, being a computer science student approaching graduation, and having built several custom desktops. So far, this laptop seems fantastic for the price. It shipped incredibly fast, (meaning I ordered it at 7 at night and it arrived at 9 the next morning. I'm starting to wonder if Amazon isn't hiring time travelers or something...) and took only a few hours to charge the battery.
The first immediate problem with this laptop is Windows 8. I can't emphasize this enough. It's slow, clunky, and fails to properly utilize the hardware. It's TERRIBLE for gaming, or anything requiring heavy use of the hardware. My advice is to downgrade back to 7 as soon as possible.
The second problem is the video chip. While it performs well, it also uses system RAM, so an upgrade of the RAM is also recommended. So far, this laptop has played Psychonauts and Oblivion flawlessly on full settings, The Witcher on mid-lower settings, and it'll play Tomb Raider on very low settings. It'll most likely be much better once I clear off the bloatware.
Oh yeah, there's bloatware. Not as much as some manufacturers like to put on, but there's enough to gobble of some of the RAM.
The feel of it is pretty nice. It's lightweight and easy to carry around, and very thin with the lack of a disk drive. The Steel color is also nicer in person than in the picture. Also, the touchpad is easy to use, and actually works, unlike a lot of other models I've seen. I'd still recommend a mouse, just because I find touchpads a little cumbersome, and this one is a bit big, so you may accidentally click something while trying to type, but it's smooth and functional.
So in a nutshell, here's basically what you need to know:
It runs well, but is slowed down by the OS
It's light and easy to carry
The speakers are on the bottom
There are 3 USB ports. Two 2.0 ports on either side and one 3.0 on the back.
There are two fans on the back panel
No disk drive
Perfect for lower-mid range gaming, may have some issues with high end gaming
Recommended RAM upgrade, OS downgrade, and mouse
I'm pretty happy with this laptop, and I'd gladly recommend it for anyone looking for a good budget system. It's still fairly new, so I'll update if anything significant happens.
UPDATE: I just downgraded the OS to Windows 7 and my goodness, the performance went through the roof! It now runs The Witcher on high setting almost perfectly (with anti-aliasing turned off, since that was the biggest performance killer), and runs Skyrim with little to no trouble, though I've yet to mod it, so it runs as well as it did on release. I can now safely say that this is a good gaming laptop. Not the greatest, but I'm impressed.
The bad part was that Windows 8 did not want to come off. I had to battle with it almost every step of the way to put 7 on, and it took a lot of patience. Hopefully others will have an easier time with this. My advice would be to plan to spend at least half a day on the downgrade, but believe me, it is completely worth it.
It also worth mentioning that even though the speakers on on the bottom, the sound is great.
SSD installed and this thing is snappy and responsive (also lighter). This laptop only had space for a 7mm drive, so the 9mm case had to go (a little duct tape kept the SSD board from clattering around).
UPDATE 8/31:
Added a 4GB stick of RAM from crucial http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LDLV6S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and got a nice bump in performance (653 vs 450 3dmarks in Firestrike test) and will add an SSD soon.
Also the speakers are quite good! I lucked out and got this model when it was $420, but it seems to be a great deal still (if you are lucky and do not get a failure unit like the negative reviewers). I've taken this thing apart a couple times and taken it to a couple LAN parties and it keeps working flawlessly.
Original Review:
I finally got myself a new laptop for light general use and the occasional LAN party as well as older games. Having a pretty fast AMD APU was exactly want I wanted. The A8-5557M is only second to the A10-5757M. I was very surprised to find this fast a chip in such a cheap laptop. It's also amazingly thin and light.
However, the potent APU is let down by the single-channel 1333MHz memory (soldered to the motherboard, so you can't replace it with 1600MHz RAM) which is a significant handicap for the integrated graphics.
However, it's easily upgraded! Taking back cover off allows access to the single SODIMM slot(unpopulated) as well as the Hard drive, so no need to pull the keyboard out to upgrade bits. I've already ordered a 4GB stick to double the memory as well as the bandwidth, and an SSD to really make it fly.
The battery is low capacity, as expected on a budget laptop. The Li-poly packs are not packaged as a unit, so replacing them in the future may be difficult. This is one of many trade-offs for the thin and light build.
The fans are somewhat loud and high pitched, as expected on such a thin laptop, but they don't bother me much.
I'm not a fan of Windows 8, but that's hardly Acer's fault and I already put 7 on, which runs wonderfully. (FYI, pull the USB 3 drivers off before you format, Acer doesn't have them on the support page, and I thought they would be part of the AMD mobility drivers)
I like the chiclet keyboard, nothing fancy but pleasant enough. The touchpad isn't so great. If you press the corner to click (not separate buttons), the whole pad tilts, and sometimes the cursor moves while clicking.
The screen is your typical 1366x768 budget laptop screen with a gloss finish, works well enough. Things look a bit greenish and washed out compared to my IPS monitor. Once again, well within the expectations of a budget laptop.
Of course, this being a budget model, many of the cons are directly the result of getting what you pay for, and I think you get a lot of value here, especially when you consider the upgrade potential. Similarly, the lack of optical drive and small battery allow this to be such a cheap ultra-thin and light laptop.
I believe I will greatly enjoy this laptop!
Pros:
Thin, Light, cheap
AMD A8-5557M APU
Upgrade potential (Easy access to SODIMM slot and HDD)
chiclet keyboard
Cons:
no optical drive
Small battery
high pitched fans (moderately loud)
1333Mhz Single Channel memory
touchpad
My major issue with this laptop is with the touch pad, Absolutely horrible touch pad. It stopped working properly after 3 days.

This laptop was to replace a desktop that has been used for general browsing and word processing. I also wanted to add something that would do well with Premiere, Lightroom, and Photoshop. I know I could have spent $1000 in something with an i7 and discrete video card but this has been more than good enough. I knew from mass exports in Lightroom that my work Laptop with an i5 was slower than our other home Laptop with an A8. On the downside I am sure that I WILL be spending another $30 to make the RAM to 8GB.Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V5-552-8404 15.6-Inch Laptop (Cold Steel)

I can not speak to the supplier. I purchased my same make and model through Toshiba direct. What I can tell you is my product arrived with a dangerous defect. The housing itself is not ground. What this means is, when the computer is plugged into a wall, it sends an electric current through the casing where you rest your hands. My husband and I physically measured this with an ohms meter.
Customer service was awful. Hours upon hours being put on hold and transferred ended in me sending the computer back only to receive it back after 10 days with a note that said... and I quote..." All voltage and current measurements are within international specifications. No trouble found. They measured input and output, without addressing the lack of ground at all! 3 hours more, being jumped from phone number to phone number, person to person, ended in being assigned a case number to await a call back, but not before being argued with over the fact that a senior tech specialist took the measurements on the input and output and no problem was found. THAT'S NOT THE PROBLEM!
2 days since my last wasted breath with this company and still no return phone call. Save your blood pressure. Pick another brand.
Fast, light, beaultiful.
The big point is the price!

I got this product through Toshiba Direct last week. I got the 12gb RAM, but other than that I have the same specs. The PC is a gem. The battery is not impressive, but it works for about 3 hours and since it wakes up in a second from sleep, I just close the PC when I don't use it. It wakes up in a second. The touch screen is a lot of fun too! I recommend this product. It is light for its size and simply feels good to use. It is a good deal for what its got. Beautiful. Using a computer feels a lot better.Saturday, September 27, 2014
Reviews of Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 Notebook - AMD AthlonTM II dual-core
This by far is the best laptop out there for the price. The AMD Athlon II x2 works perfectly and can handle a lot of tasks. Windows 7 is a amazing improvement from vista. I bought it mainly because of the expandable ram (up to 8 gb) which is great and the 320 GB HD!! An incredible value! The keyboard is very comfortable and it is very light weight for its size. The look is sleek and the screen is perfect. I like the fact that it comes with a SD slot. The touch pad has a nice feel and it responds fast and smoothly.
It is solidly built, not too heavy, a 15.6 HD widescreen display which shows beautifully. I had a hard time installing incredimail due to it's incompatibility with Windows 7 but eventually found a version that supports it, runs great now. Smooth sailing with the mouse pad. It is heavy with programs I don't use/need but that comes with the territory. Battery life, I can't remark about that to date as I rarely use just battery power. It does have energy efficient power settings designed to preserve battery power though.
The fan is a bit noisy, but not a big deal I find that I tune that out over time anyways; I have had other machines that were much louder. I also like the placement of the power cord adapter, on the right side; I'm right handed so it works well for me as opposed to being in the rear or left side. Was able to connect to my home network smoothly and began using it right out of the box. The speakers are a bit "tinny" sounding; so far I really have no major complaints about anything else. I would highly recommend this computer for the daily task of email, surfing, word processing, games that are not heavy on the RAM, etc... It is definitely a great value from a trusted name in quality electronics. Oh yea, I did receive 2 recovery disc with my purchase.
Now for the surprises... the system comes with only a small printed pamphlet for instructions. Toshiba has a user guide on-line which is helpful, but does not provide any help on actually setting up wireless, being sure it is protected using WEP, or joining a home network. Good luck if you aren't a computer guru or have a neighbor/friend that is. Despite what the salesman told me, this is a 32bit system and will only boot up in 32bit Win7 mode, although the cpu is capable of 64 bit. It does not give an option for 64 bit Win 7. Toshiba tech support claims that if I add memory to 4 GB or more, then the option to "restore" to 64bit will show up, even though Toshiba site does not show this model as supporting 64 bit (due to 3GB ram or license limitation?). You might have to buy an upgrade version to gain the option of choosing 32 or 64 bit Win7, so do some checking if you want a 64 bit system. The sound/speaker system is terrible. Besides the speakers sounding like a cheap childs toy, the volume (at max "wheel" adjustment and 100% selection on sound control) is not enough to listen to music, youtube, etc. I had read reviews about poor volume and sound, but thought it couldn't really be that bad..... but it is even worse than described. Sound through earbuds/phones is ok if you don't mind having to carry them with the portable.
Although battery life is short, I have it set on "eco" setting and I get over 2 hours, maybe close to 3 hours, with light usage, such as surfing internet, reading email and help files, typing documents, etc. Since fan only intermittently up to 35% speed with this type usage, I suspect battery time would be much less than 2 hours for high cpu usage games/programs. Over 15GB hard drive is taken up with the hidden recovery partition and the video card uses ram for it's video memory. You can create recovery DVD's, but I haven't determined whether this will actually make recovery DVD's that backup your system at current state (including programs) or just copy the factory setup that is on the recovery partition.
Overall, I decided it will serve my purpose, but be sure you know what features you need. If you want to share/listen to music/youtube etc, plan on using an external speaker or earphones. If you want to utilize the capabilities of 64 bit Win7 to access more memory or run 64 bit software, plan on buying a retail upgrade version.
If there are any downsides, they would be the speakers and battery life. I'm getting about 2.5 hours of battery life but it doesn't bother me. I keep my charger plugged in at my end table and just plug it back up when it's getting low. I don't plan to take it out of the house anyway. The speakers and the volume control are mediocre at best so if you're looking for a machine for multimedia, gaming, or music, it probably wouldn't suit your needs. Unlike other reviewers, I have no problem hearing YouTube videos or audio on websites, it's just that the quality is not that good. I may invest in some external speakers at some point. I do agree with other reviewers that instructions/documentation was somewhat lacking but since mine came from Best Buy, it had been fully optimized by the Geek Squad so all I had to do was plug it in and charge it and it was ready to go.
Overall, I love this laptop!! It's a great buy...go get it!!

I've had my laptop for just over a week so I will come update this later. So far I'm really enjoying it. It connects fast to the internet. I like the number pad on the right. The touch pad works great (though I prefer using a wireless mouse). I love the SD slot which is so much better than having to hunt down my camera cable. I like the wide screen. I like the silver color of the keyboard. About the only thing I have as a con so far is the sound isn't loud enough at times even when I have it up all the way, but that might partly be because of whatever program or application is running. I wish the battery lasted a little longer, too. I ordered a skin for the lid and a keyboard protector to keep it free of dust and debris (and cat hair). I'm hoping to upgrade the RAM, too, after Christmas.Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 Notebook - AMD AthlonTM II dual-core
This will make my 3rd purchase of the Toshiba Satellite; fortunately this is a keeper for me. The other 2 purchases were gifts to family members. They both raved about their computers so when my Acer Aspire bit the dust I decided to purchase this one for myself. First and foremost, you simply cannot beat the price, exceptional value! This came as a bundle, to include a wireless optical mouse, 4 gig flash drive and a Targus case, all for under 500$. The design is slick with a beautiful silver striped finish. The keys are a nice size to where I am not hitting other keys around my fingers when I type. As others have noted, it has a numeric keypad off to the right, which is great. Running Windows 7 home premium which I love compared to Vista on my Vaio, which I really just could not get into that much, 7 is way more stable and less complicated to navigate. It is solidly built, not too heavy, a 15.6 HD widescreen display which shows beautifully. I had a hard time installing incredimail due to it's incompatibility with Windows 7 but eventually found a version that supports it, runs great now. Smooth sailing with the mouse pad. Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 Notebook - AMD AthlonTM II dual-core
I wanted a laptop as a backup for my desktop and didn't need all the features of a full laptop, but more than a netbook. Although I've only had it a week (Best Buy $399), I've been spending a lot of time deciding whether I want to keep it since I have a 2 week limit to return it. It is much faster than my desktop, especially accessing the internet. Windows 7 has been a frustrating learning curve (been a heavy XP user)while in a hurry to try out features, access home network, etc. Some of the Toshiba assist programs are helpful in finding features before finding them in Win7. The system has performed very well except for a couple of lock-ups while using Intenet Explorer 8. It did seem to recover ok on reboot. The touchpad took some reading and adjusting (both computer and me) to use the features. The scroll feature is nice, but for some reason, it won't work in all windows, but clicking on the scroll bar seems to get it working in them also. It actually has 3 USB ports (one is a shared eSATA/USB port that I wouldn't have realized if saleman had not mentioned it.Now for the surprises... the system comes with only a small printed pamphlet for instructions.

I bought this laptop 12/31/09 for at . I am very pleased with my purchase! I had been looking for a laptop for net surfing and to run MS Office so I wanted more than a netbook but didn't need a top of the line machine. I had pretty much decided that an older, single core processor without an optical drive and maybe an 11-14" screen which would fit my price range and needs. I still can't believe I got this laptop for . It has an AMD dual-core processor, is very fast (faster than my desktop, at least) has a wonderful, solid feeling keyboard, beautiful 15.6" screen AND a DVR-W drive. I love the number pad for my soapmaking calculations and for MSOffice.

This laptop is definitely the best in our house. Its got windows 8 which is a bad transfer from 7 but it works alright. The screen is huge but if you want to do minor gaming get a wireless mouse the built-in right and left click don't respond to rapid clicking. But really all-in-all a great laptop I highly recommend it.

I've never owned an Acer laptop before and was quite skeptical because of negative feedback I've heard regarding Acer machines. However, after receiving this computer system, I was stunned by the sturdy premium design! I'm a musician and use this laptop to record, mix, master, and run programs like Protools, Adobe Audition, Fruity Loops, and etc. Thus far, I've had no problems nor do I have anything negative to say! This laptop is definitely worth every penny!Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V3-771-6882 17.3-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black)

After reading the reviews on this computer, I just want to say that, compared to other laptops from various manufacturers (Apple, HP, Dell, etc.), this computer is by far the most well built computer I have ever come across. I have taken this computer to school with me EVERYDAY for the last 3+ years and not yet has it slowed down, even by the tiniest bit. I've never had any hardware or software problems nor any of the problems that people seem to be complaining about. (FYI-If you treat any computer like a piece of meat, it will break, regardless of who made it). I just wanted to write a positive review about this computer because I am still very happy with its performance (especially being 3+ years old) and do not intend on buying another laptop anytime soon.
The description showed very good condition..but it's horrible. The frame near the DVD box is burnt. The frame is extremely loose. Gap exxists between frame components ..completely opposite to what has been declared.

I have had my T500 for 3+ years. It has performed flawlessly. The other posters here are obviously computer illiterate. Most of their problems stem from the fact that they don't know how to use a laptop nor the software. When I had a question for Lenovo Tech, I got through almost immediately and had my question answered. I would suggest that te other unhappy Lenovo users that posted here go back to a Corona typewriter, save yourself some grief.Honest reviews on Lenovo Thinkpad T500 15.4-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.3 Hours of

Ive had my Y500 for LESS THAN 6 MONTHS and it already broke. Its now slow, wont restart, and or shutdown. And Lenovo made me pay $200 plus $30 for shipping to send it back for them to fix it. Before i bought the laptop the costumer service was great, nice and helpful, but now all they do is waste an hour of your time on the phone just to end up telling you that you have to buy more crap to get your computer working.Wednesday, April 2, 2014
Reviews of HP Compaq Presario cq58-bf9wm 15.6-Inch Laptop (Pacific Blue)
I waited in line at Black Friday for 2 hours for the laptop and the wait was worth it! This is my 1st laptop and it is amazing for the price! Setup was a breeze and within 30 minutes of boot up, I was already using it. Boot up time is lightning fast only taking 12 seconds! Windows 8 takes some time to get used to, but there is a guide with the laptop that explains the process to you. Battery time is decent lasting 5 to 6 hours of heavy use or up to 3 days in standby time. Wi-Fi works great with this laptop and the internet is lightning fast! You can also switch from a Windows 8 to a Windows 7 mode by clicking this application called Desktop. I haven't had a single problem with this laptop in the 2 weeks I have had so you can tell that is a quality machine. Great laptop for only $179, and is highly recommended that you get the 2 year warranty from Walmart for only $19. The laptop itself comes with a 1 year warranty and with the warranty from Walmart, it will bump it to a 3 year combined warranty.
Also, if you wish to upgrade the RAM, please be aware that there is only one DIMM slot for the RAM, and the RAM can only be upgraded to 8 GBS of ram. Happy laptop hunting and have a nice day!
P.S. This particular laptop has a turbo-boosting technology that will bump the processor to clock at 1.20 GHz and above, when performing certain tasks such as gaming. This is extremely useful when performing many tasks at once.
Update: I have been using this laptop for about 2 months, and still working like a champ! There have been zero problems with this laptop, except the annoying notifications for Windows updates, which just ask you to re-boot your laptop to start the update. Other than that, this laptop has been working great. I highly suggest that the upgrade the ram to 8 GBS, as this will pay off in the long run. Have a nice day.

I bought this computer on black friday for $179 and 9 months later it is still going strong. I have had really no issues with it at all. I put this computer through hell and back and it is still working great. My last computer was an Acer and I paid $300 for it and i had to replace the screen 3 times because it kept cracking, but with this compaq, i am known to drop laptops a lot and i have dropped this one several times and the screen has never cracked. The speed is okay, and the memory is okay but i wasen't expecting greatness when i paid for it. So i highly recommend this computer to anyone.Best Deals for HP Compaq Presario cq58-bf9wm 15.6-Inch Laptop (Pacific Blue)
I upgraded my wife's laptop and in fact it only has one memory slot. Typically stores will not carry the single 8GB ram chip so I looked and found it at Best Buy. I had it shipped to the store which was free and cost about $40. I have had no problems with this memory upgrade and the computer is very fast and my wife loves it. Overall it was well worth the money and for the people that say that the specifications are lies on the memory slot i agree but on the processor speed they need to understand that it works like intel chips. They also have a boost feature that will automatically overclock the processor depending on your needs. It will not boost it to the 1.3ghz if you are checking your email. Hope this helps.Patriot Memory Signature 8GB 1333MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SoDIMM Laptop Memory

Reviews of Asus U46E-BAL5 Refurbished Notebook PC
Good computer very fast but the refurbish was not complete. The system would not shut down with the shutdown icon. It would restart over and over. I had to hard boot it with the off button every time. Not a windows 7 issue but a hardware issue. Had to return to Tiger direct. I really wanted to keep it but the hard boot issue was unacceptable defect.
Also, as a side note, the speakers on the computer are terrible. They are only on the right side of the computer, UNDERNEATH the laptop. I had to either tilt the laptop so I could hear anything, or resort back to headphones. Worth the $$? I think not.

Everything came as expected. Delivered on time. No problem with payment. Unit is working without any glitch. As refurbished item, didn't come with a box nor printed manual-but it is cool since u just press power and windows 7 setup seamlessly went... and I'm off to download and install the other software I need. :)Best Deals for Asus U46E-BAL5 Refurbished Notebook PC
I bought this Asus computer with the belief that I was getting a steal due to the low cost of $529 while the computer had 8GB of RAM and 750GB of storage while most computers for that price have only 4 GB RAM and 500GB storage. The 3 good parts about this computer are that 1) the price is cheap, 2)it is fast and 3) it has more storage than I would ever care to use. The bad parts are fourfold: 1) the size of the font is constantly changing meaning that sometimes the print is too small to read and yet other times the print is so large, that I need to constantly scroll to read an entire line; 2)the page constantly moves up and down even when I'm scrolling in the opposite direction-the page jumps and one never knows when or in which direction; 3)the audio is atrocious. There are several videos where I can't hear a thing. Other times, I simply turn off any back round noise and put my ear to the audio. The other problem with the audio is that there is only one speaker and the speaker is beneath the key board and thus is always covered. If you plan to listen to videos, this is not the computer for you; 4)Similar to many lenovo computers, the keyboard doesn't have rounded edges so that when one is using the scroll button or mouse pad, ones palms will be rubbing against the non-rounded edges and cause some sever lingering pain. Overall, the great speed and storage vs the major annoyances make me give this computer a rating of FAIR. Even for the great price, I was quite disappointed.Honest reviews on Asus U46E-BAL5 Refurbished Notebook PC
I've had this computer for 13 months. It was working perfectly fine until I woke up one morning and the screen was black. Brought it into Best Buy Geek Squad to get it fixed. Two weeks later I found out that the computer wasn't able to be fixed. I bought this computer brand new for $1100 with all the added features of virus protection, software, and warranty. What a waste of money. I've heard that other people with ASUS have had issues with hard drives and black screens (just google it), but I saw the awesome specs of the computer and didn't pay attention to the negative reviews. Absolute waste of money. I will never purchase an ASUS computer again. Also, as a side note, the speakers on the computer are terrible. They are only on the right side of the computer, UNDERNEATH the laptop. I had to either tilt the laptop so I could hear anything, or resort back to headphones. Worth the $$? I think not.

Review of Toshiba L855-S5372 15.6" Laptop with 3rd Generation Intel Core
I have only been using this laptop for 5 days, but so far it seems pretty darn nice. It is fast everything opens and loads instantly. Startup/reboot takes literally a few seconds.
Excellent processor, ample RAM to handle many tasks at once, and can be upgraded to 16gb.
Screen is glossy and so it does have some glare depending on your lighting and angle. Frame around the screen is glossy back.
They keyboard, I am struggling to get used to. If my nails weren't so long, it would probably be much easier. The keys have some space between them and they are raised think Scrabble pieces laying on a table. They are totally flat and square, no slanted edges. I find myself missing a lot of keys when typing and have to be more purposeful and exact and be more proper with hand posture. To be honest, my fingers hurt after typing on it all day today. I am hoping it is something I will get more used to as time goes on. If you're already familiar with this type of keyboard, I am sure it will not be an issue.
The touchpad is pretty far off to the left. When you have the 10key number pad, the touchpad usually is more to the left, but this one seems pretty far over. My HP was not that far to the left. I am right handed, so it is a bit of a stretch. I am getting used to that though.
Factory set, the mouse/touchpad was skipping and sticking for me and when I would tap to click, i'd have to tap a few times, instead of once. It is much better now that I changed most of the settings. The touchpad is slightly textured, but it doesn't cause any issues.
The screen is bright. I have adjusted it down some, a little more dim.
It is quiet. I hear the fan kick on for a few seconds every now and then, but it is so very quietly. Haven't felt the laptop or the charging block get hot at all yet and it has been plugged in and running for 5 days straight. I put it to sleep maybe 4 times a day for about 15mins to an hour. The laptop has never even gotten slightly warm.
Windows 8 is.. different...slightly annoying, but I am sure I will get used to it. I deleted/uninstalled almost all of the "Apps" from the startup screen. I'd like to totally disable that screen. It will be useful for some, but others will hate it and see it as a roadblock of sorts to get to the "regular" desktop screen. It takes some getting used to, that's for sure. There are a lot of places on the web to see tutorials etc. There is a short bit of one in the laptop user manual as well.
Size and weight are perfect for me. Not too big, not too small and not too heavy. It isn't what you would call "thin and light" but it isn't too bulky or heavy. I don't like the smaller screens of netbooks and tabs, but I also do not like the huge 17" screens ether. This 15.6" is perfect. I don't travel with my laptop much, so extreme portability is not an issue for me. It is less than an inch and a half thick.
As soon as I set the laptop up, it picked up my wireless printer and already had it installed somehow. No clue how, but it was nice to not have to go through that whole setup process. On the other 4 laptops that are connected with the printer, I had to manually look for available devices, add and install the printer, usually needing to use the disk. Not this time. I just clicked on add printer, thinking I would have to use the normal process of adding it and it was already there and ready to use.
The sound was pretty bad at first, but I updated the driver and it is much better now. Still has somewhat of the cheap alarm clock radio sound to it, but not nearly as bad. There are some settings I will try and mess with and see if it makes a difference. I am not too worried about the sound though...it's not like I will be using the laptop speakers as a music source.
Something I *really* like is Toshiba's "Sleep and Charge" feature. It allows you to charge your cellphone, or other items, even while the laptop is sleeping or turned off. This is such a convenient feature for me. I love it.
So far, I am loving the laptop itself and still getting used to Windows 8. Definitely recommended. It is fast and powerful enough to handle pretty much anything and is Energy Star rated. Toshiba even offers free electronics recycling. 5 stars and will update as needed.
I purchased a copy of Windows 7 and tried to install it on this computer. It would not install.
I did not like Windows 8 for business. I found using multiple applications at same time on 8 not as easy or intuitive as Windows 7 especially without a touchscreen monitor. Starting from 8 then gong to 7 was ok, but why?? I honestly resented being forced to open a MS account. I hope that it is not the direction that they are going in the future. When setting up the computer for the beginning, I made a mistake on the initial password, so hours after setting up the computer, I went to log in and the password that entered did not work. When you did not want a password to begin with, the frustration of going out to MS and requesting their permission to get into my computer was very high, when you consider I did not want a password to begin with. In my opinion, passwords should be optional to the user depending on how the computer will be used and the risk of it being stolen. This is still a personal computer and one size does not fit all. I returned the computer and got a Windows 7 computer, also from Toshiba as a matter of fact. Very happy.
I've read that others say it's very fast. I haven't had that experience. Not sure why? It's supposed to have one of the fastest i7 processors?
Really disappointed in the construction and the speed.

I purchased this computer for my small business to be a computer to review emails late at night, take to customer sites, and to bidders conferences. As a computer it worked fine. Performance was good, screen quality was good and it never failed. I returned this computer because of Windows 8 and how Toshiba has implemented it. When you start up the computer for the first time it requires to get a Microsoft account with ID. It also requires you to establish a Windows user id and password, which you MUST enter every time you start to use the computer. The password has the high set of standards which means it is not likely to be something that you will easily remember.I purchased a copy of Windows 7 and tried to install it on this computer. It would not install.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5353 Laptop 15.6" / 4GB / 500GB Reviews
I purchased this laptop from Amazon through the distributor "detailsurfer" as a present for my husband. The purchase was made through Amazon and the hard drive stopped working after less than 2 weeks of use. A technican for Toshiba and Norton both said the hard drive was defective. The Tobshiba rep gave a claim reference number and stated that the distributor whom I purchased the laptop must be notified concerning replacement. I contacted the distributor Andrew within the return period. He did not accept return of the computer. Toshiba has a one year warranty on the laptop. My husband contacted Toshiba concerning this laptop and they stated that they would send a box so the computer could be returned. We have not received the packaging 2 months after the purchase.
I would recommend that you NOT purchase anything from Andrew at "detailsurfer". He has provided no customer service for this laptop. The computer stopped working during the reurn period. He took my money and when the laptop was defective he did not take his "junk" back and send a new computer.
I have purchased a Toshiba laptop in the past and had no problems. I would be reluctant to purchase their products in the future because you will not get any customer service from their distributor or the company.
picked it up at OfficeMax for $379.99. It's probably not the fastest if you're looking for a gaming computer, but for my varied uses, it is perfect. I was looking for a fast processor without mortgaging the house, a HDMI port, DVD player/writer, WiFi of course, great memory and hard drive storage included without having to upgrade immediately (or ever), full sized keyboard with separate numeric pad, and a brand I can trust. This laptop is all that and more. Dual core processor running at 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM, and 500GB hard drive. Great price, great computer.
Won't know about battery life this soon after purchase. Also some bloat to remove, and don't forget to update your drivers.

This is a very good laptop. I bought it for my sister and it works quite fine. No problems at all....well...except for the webcam. It gave some problems at first so we just reinstalled the driver using the website and it was fixed and ready to go. I recommend this to anyone!Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Buy Acer TimelineX 11.6" Laptop (1.2 GHz Intel Core i3-330UM Processor
I bought this product with the understanding that I was buying an Timeline product as the title states. It is not a Timeline product. This product is an Aspire 1830-3895, notice no "T" suffix on the 1830, its not a Timeline. The battery is 4400 mAH, not 5800 as on the Timeline series. To deplete you battery further, there is also an obsolete GSM AT&T GSM WAN interface board in the laptop that can be removed.
Your ostensibly good deal is diminished considering that you'll need a new battery (~$75) to bring it up to the TimelineX battery life (if ~7 to 8 hrs is important, it is to me!) and a parasitic GSM board dining on your battery.
The vendor is reasonable enough though and in the end, it was a good transaction.
I recently removed the conventional hdd in favor or a Sandisk ssd that extends tha battery life and makes the 330um processor seem relatively snappy. This device plays video flawlessly (my old Acer A0751h did not) and is great if you like to have a computer handy.
I bought a small bag rooCASE Netbook, iPad Carrying Case Deluxe Bag for 10,11.6 Inches Black which in itself is a good bag and houses this very well.
Simply said, this little Acer notebook deserves 5-stars.

This is a well design solid little laptop. It's perfect for what I'm looking for. Good battery life, fast and easy to run a HD movie, and very reasonable hard drive, screen and keyboard are perfect size, and I have been using it everyday like a desktop for the past 10 month, and so far there is nothing I can complain about it. It works just like I expected. I'd like to get one more for my wife.Best Deals for Acer TimelineX 11.6" Laptop (1.2 GHz Intel Core i3-330UM Processor
With its Intel i3 processor it's superbly responsive and no less in performance compared to the business class notebooks from which I had migrated to this one for its portability. With a screen size of under 12" and sharp resolution I never felt wanting. Every thing on this little notebook worked as described and I found the Acer support through its chat line very approachable and responsive.I bought a small bag rooCASE Netbook, iPad Carrying Case Deluxe Bag for 10,11.6 Inches Black which in itself is a good bag and houses this very well.

Honest reviews on Acer TimelineX 11.6" Laptop (1.2 GHz Intel Core i3-330UM Processor
I initially bought this computer as one to throw in my bag and use on the go but it quickly became my main computer. It's i3 processor is fast and with 4 gb of memory it beats my old vista desktop hands down. There is ample space on the hard drive, even for my music, pictures and such. I also love the full size keyboard and my only complaint is I miss my 10 key but have become proficient in typing correctly so I can hit the numbers on the keyboard with ease. The track pad is easy to use and has some nice features for zooming and scrolling. I do use a wireless mouse from Logitech most of the time though. The monitor is a decent size for such a small computer and if I'm going to use it for long periods of time I simply connect a full size monitor to the port. I've used the hdmi ports to connect it to my 32" tv for viewing videos and such from my iTunes account. The battery lasts for 4 hours and so far has not lost any capacity since buying this almost a year ago. I love that I can throw this into any purse I own to take with me when needed. It's footprint is the size of a regular sheet of paper. All in all, it was a great purchase and for the cheap price tag. Acer has definitely won me over as a brand I will buy again.
