I received the laptop in January of 2013. The version I had was the one with the Intel Core i7-3517U and Windows 8. The build date was September 2012, so it should have had the WIFI issues fixed.

The good:

-Solid build

-Good screen, though not great

-Very fast processor

-Touch pad is the best I've ever used

The bad:

WIFI was working solidly after updating the Intel Wireless driver. I didn't experience any drops. However, because of the casing of this laptop, the internal wireless antenna is awful. Unless the laptop is close to the wireless router where you get 5 bars, the internet speed will not be good. I did a test with this laptop and my sister's HP A6 Vision One (bargain basement laptop) in the bedroom about 60 feet away from the router. Her laptop got 2 bars of signal but was still able to do 2.6 MBps while the Lenovo did 0.26 MBps!!!

The other negative about this laptop is the keyboard. The keys feel ok when typing, but some of the lower keys like the "c" and the "b" key would not register on the first press. Also, the configuration leaves a lot to be desired. I just could not get used to the small SHIFT key on the right side, along with the small ENTER key on that side. There's absolutely no reason they couldn't have put full size keys on the right side of the laptop. The touch pad, however, is one of the best I've ever used. So that offsets the bad keyboard a little bit.

The laptop has a very solid build, but is very heavy. The specs put it around 4.2 lbs, which is at the top end of an ultrabook's weight. I would say it weighs closer to 4.4 lbs because my Acer Aspire Timeline 4810tz is listed at 4.3 lbs and it is slightly lighter than this Lenovo.

In the end, I returned this laptop and opted for the Samsung Series 5 NP530U4C-A01US (14-inch) ultrabook. I got a "like new" version from Amazon Warehouse for only $530 and it arrived in perfect condition. It's been over a month and I am very happy with this Samsung notebook. It is lighter, runs just about as good as the Lenovo, gets excellent WIFI signal, has a better keyboard, and has a built-in DVD-RW drive.

The lenovo u410 is a nice conputer. With its i7 processor it will run smoothly for every task you need it for, and will boost up power with its nvidia dedicates graphics when needed.

The design looks great, the trackpad runs smoothly with it's multitouch gestures, and the keyboard will give you a nice experience at typing.

All in all m, you wont regret buying this computer.

Honest reviews on Lenovo U410 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Grey)

Computer worked perfectly fine in my old apartment except for maybe a few Windows 8 glitches. As soon as I move into my new apartment, the wifi has been non-existent. I am using the same router too. I did research and keep reading about the wifi issues with this computer. What's weird is mine was manufactured in November 2013 and the faulty units were manufactured in July 2013 so they still must be selling bad units?

On the contrary, it did work fine before so I don't know...it could just be my router. Either way, I need to find a solution to this or else this was a BAD investment.

Update!

After much crying on the phone with Lenovo they finally repaired my unit at no cost. It came back fine and is working well. Lenovo came through but it took some arm twisting to get them to do so.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I purchased this laptop a few months ago. It met my expectations. It's not a super performer but it got the job done and I had no complaints until a couple of weeks ago. I go to open the laptop, like any normal person would, and the left hinge breaks and causes a separation on the bezel. The unit was new so I fgured I would be covered by the warranty. Wrong! I sent it back and a week later I get an email from Lenovo stating that the damage is not covered by the warranty and that the repair would cost $187.00. Well isn't that swell.

If you are considering purchasing this machine please take my experience into account. You are most likely better off getting something from some other manufacturer.

This computer is a little pricey, but I thought the antiglare screen was worth it. I just got it and have only had it hours, but this is my first impression.

Aesthetically pleasing, by far. The finish on the aluminum on top is really pleasing to me. The computer looks good. The keyboard is a nice size. So far I have no complaints about the mouse touchpad after you turn off touch to click option (with it on, the mouse resets in odd places...). The Keyboard is smooth and not very loud.

The computer itself has a lot of nice touches. a fingerprint reader allows easy logons with fingerprint swipe (totally new to me). Lots of quick keys for function on the keyboard.

For the size of the computer, it is a good weight. Battery seems to charge up within a couple hours and stays on power for a few. I got about 4-5 hours of use out of it before needing to charge it up again. The webcam is good for a built-in.

i3 processor seems to do well with high def videos, opening large files. I've yet to try it on games.

Windows 8 is completely confusing, but that's another story. Overall, a great computer for the money I spent on it. I will try to update if anything sticks out to me that should be warned against.

Well made, decent performing laptop that seems like it will last for a few good years. The case is very sturdy, resulting in a fairly heavy machine. So far the battery life seems like a solid few hours. Screen is bright and clear. The keyboard is comfortable to use and the number pad is appreciated. After using the touchpad, it seems OKa little weird at times but all of them seem to be. I prefer using my mouse 90% of the time but its what I'm accustomed to. The fingerprint reader was a pleasant surprise; I was prepared for it to be just a gimmick but it works. The features of Windows 8 on the other hand are a tremendous disappointment but there's nothing to do but dig in and make it workthere are no other options really. The Intel Core i3-3110M CPU (2.40GHz) is more than adequate for my needs and it seem fast compared to my previous Core2 Duo. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase, for normal home all-around use, its a good choice.

Have purchased a couple of these. No complaints except for them coming with Windows 8 installed. Wish they had Windows 7 because Windows 8 really sucks. I don't know of anyone that likes it. Thankfully, there is a program that makes Windows 8 look similar to Windows 7. They can take Windows 8 and trash it as far as I'm concerned.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion g6-1d73us 15.6" Laptop (2.30 GHz Intel Core i3-2350M

I bought a G6-1d73us in July 2012, feeling confident I'd get a phenomenal PC for the price (since I like HP products and have been a devoted customer for years). The laptop has good specs and is definitely a step up from my last HP laptop (whose processor is out of date and too slow to accommodate my current needs). This G6 met my expectations EXCEPT for one thing: I've noticed a substantial decrease in the quality of the sound / audio since July (quality that seems to decrease daily). It's been 6 months and I can't even watch or listen to anything without my headphones on. Without the headphones, the sound is so dim one can barely hear anything (even when there's no other phonic distraction in the background). It's a huge inconvenience for me to have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. My warranty hasn't expired yet, thankfully; I'd be even more frustrated if this had happened to me post-warranty. After a bit of research online, I discovered that many people had encountered this problem --probably a hardware malfunction (and not a driver problem). Had I known my sound would die in a matter of months, I wouldn't have purchased this particular model.

I've just upgraded from an older T21 to T23, because I love Thinkpads. The design is sleek and strict, without unnecessary brightness and buttons. The LCD screen is sharp, and much brighter than those I saw on Compaq. It is very slim and light, so perfect for travel. It is fast. The swappable drives take 30 seconds to change. etc. and etc.

Importantly enough, it is an excellent IBM's customer support. T-series has 3-year warranty. When I had to change a part on my older T21, I sent it on Tuesday and they returned the laptop on Thursday same week (at their cost, of course!). Online support is also superb.

You can look at ebay for good deals, but beware of possible scum! Buy it!

I bought one of these about four years ago from a surplus reseller. Installed XP Pro and Office 03.

All ran great for -well, four years. Admittedly, I abused the hell out of this unit. I more than deserved the failure, and was not surprised when it happened.

Reasons this ThinkPad is great:

-Tough (as mentioned above).

-Designed for WAY more ram than other computers sold at the time of its manufacture.

-Display gives a clear, sharp image.

-File download matrix available at Lenovo.com -all the drivers you'll ever need to restore this to factory functionality.

-Bullet-proof (unless you "attack it with an ax" as I did).

-Slim titanium frame (light, strong, dissipates heat well).

-Parts readily available (It's a ThinkPad!!!)

Finally, it failed about 3 months ago when I dropped it.

Simply putting old (sound) drive into a new enclosure and cloning it to the new unit. Strongly advise buying one if you need a reliable, inexpensive computer and you don't need a lot of processor speed

I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I've had the laptop for 3 months and I have no complaints. The battery life could be a little better, but I do alot of HD Video editing so I know all of the importing, editing, and rendering uses alot of resources. I love the touch screen. I don't use it alot but it's a great feature.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

To start off, I've owned this laptop for about 24 hours now and got it as an upgrade to a returned Toshiba Satellite touch which was utterly terrible. Over the past 24 hours I've played with this thing trying to get used to Windows 8 and I find myself trying my hardest to change it back to 7, but I'm not here to review the OS. The laptop is well powered by the core i5, but I can see a year or two down the line where it will become quite the hurdle. The hard drive stated on the box was 500gb but actual is around 450 which is to be expected. The 6gb of ram is probably the minimum necessary to operate windows 8 properly. I am a student so the majority of my work on this computer will be using Office products and internet. I am confident that this will work well for those purposes.

The laptop itself is surprisingly thin at just under an inch. It is all plastic which makes the computer rather light. The trackpad looks and feels like it is a "plasticky" sticker. My trackpad came with a sort of crease in the lower right part which is not supposed to be there, but I can get over it. The backlight under the keys is pretty cool and makes it easy to see keys in the dark. The screen is bright and clear with no problems with the 10-point touch. The sound is pretty decent, DO NOT EXPECT this thing to blow your socks off but it is about as loud as you can expect from a laptop. The quality is on par with the low price of the device meaning that some edges are kinda sharp and in some areas the fitment is a little flimsy. The battery lasts a little over two hours on high performance and screen brightness maxed out.

I would recommend this laptop to a student on a limited budget. If you have an extra hundred or so I would get something better but by no means is this a bad product.

Pros: Sound, battery, price, size, weight

Cons: Skeleton quality (sharpness), processor (possibly), Windows 8 (imo)

If I think of anything else or change my opinion on things I will edit later.

I am pleased with the computer with the exception of one nearly overriding issue. The speakers are totally inadequate! I seriously thought there was something amiss and considered sending it back. I took some time reading reviews and found pour sound quality to be a common complaint. I've addressed the sound issue with a decent Bluetooth speaker. Another complaint is the fact that there is NO Caps Lock indicator light!! ?????

That said, overall, I'm satisfied with the unit. It seems to be fast enough and the cooling fan is not overly loud. Start up time is not too bad for this type of laptop. The touch screen is a nice touch, as well. It's well worth the price paid.

So first I will say I am coming from a MacBook air 11' mid 2011 with 2GB ram and 64GB harddrive. This one I got has 4GB of ram and 128GB harddrive. I use this laptop mainly for browsing the internet and some programming. Now that you have a little background Ill give a quick review.

From the get go this laptop is MUCH faster then my previous Macbook air. When you open the lid you are ready to go that second. On the old one I would have to wait a little for it to load and if I left chrome up and clicked on it right away then I would get the loading wheel. I havent seen this do it once. That could be because of the harddrive being so much faster.

When I opened the box the laptop was already charged to 91% so im trying to kill it. Well I was on it ALL NIGHT last night and now its the morning and its only at 60%. That battery life is amazing and let me honest thats what we ask for in a laptop.

If you are up in the air about this laptop(no pun intended). I would say give it a go. You could even buy it from the Apple store and if you dont like it just return it.

If you are replacing an older Macbook air and have one thats because the mid 2012 then I would say get it but if you have the mid 2012 I dont know if I would suggest spending the money unless you really want battery. I hope this helps anyone trying to purchase this laptop.

I am not an Apple fan boy. My desktop is a custom build Window machine so I know both worlds. Please if you have any questions just comment and I will be happy to try things for you or just answer questions.

I am a Computer Engineer so im use to testing things so feel free to ask.

(This is my first review)

This might look like just a minor spec bump from last years model. However, the new MBA boasts all day battery life: 11 inch (9 hours) and 13 inch (12 hours). This is a big step up from the previous generation. This is due to a larger battery and more efficient processor. The upcoming OS X Mavericks is supposed to be even more energy efficient than Mountain Lion. The MBA is also faster due to the new processor and has a faster wifi connection. The solid state drive in this computer makes it much faster than a regular hard drive computer.

This is a great computer overall. The screen is not as nice as the retina Macbook Pro, however it is not a deal breaker. The MBA is a lightweight, portable computer and the Retina screen is thicker, heavier, and more expensive. Once they manage to make a thin, lightweight Retina Display this computer might be perfect. You will probably not miss the disc drive on this computer because it is a featherweight without it and you can use an external disc drive if you have to or remotely access another computer with a disc drive.

If you are debating between the 11 and 13 inch models, it depends on what you want to use it for. The extra screen space, SD card slot, and longer battery life for $100 more makes the 13 inch a worthy choice. However, some want a truly portable machine that can fit easily in a large purse or briefcase.

If you are debating between this computer and an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard, consider the ease of use of the computer versus the portability and cost of an iPad. For students, it is nice to have a real keyboard and be able to easily create documents, spreadsheets, and powerpoints on an actual computer, but I see more and more students with iPads and a keyboard case getting by just fine.

If you are debating between 128GB and 256GB (or custom order 512GB from Apple), consider cloud storage. Flickr now has 1 TB free photo storage with no size restrictions. Google Drive and Evernote are great for documents and you can always store your iTunes library on an external hard drive if you have a massive library.

If you are debating between this and a Windows Ultrabook/ Google Chromebook, consider the operating system, reliability, customer service, and resale value. People love Apple products and you can resell the computer if you want to eventually upgrade. They hold their value pretty well. The operating system takes a little getting used to but it is a lot smoother than Windows and you will probably never want to switch back to the dark side. If you really need a Windows Program, you can run Windows on a Mac.

Best Deals for Apple MacBook Air MD712LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

Working off formerly a 13" macbook air mid 2011, I just bought this new 2013 model with the Haswell CPU and low power consumption infrastructure.

Off a full charge, I disconnected 3 hours 40 mins and had an external drive connected the entire time, restarted 4 times, and did NONSTOP heavy application installs (Office suite, Photoshop etc.), a total of 23 applications, and ran youtube vids in the background the entire time, and after all of that nonstop heavy loading, I had 76% on my battery, of which id have around 35% on my older Macbook Air.

Further still, the entire unit has run UTTERLY COOL during this EXTREMELY heavy loading, installing and heavy 1080P video graphics play. My other Macbook Air would be almost too hot to touch underneath near back under same conditions.

Even without 802ac (new Wifi connection thru the new Air), I notice roughly 25% faster throughput on likewise file downloads using my new Macbook Air than that of my older version Macbook Air.

This new Macbook Air contains PCIe-Based Flash Storage Approaches 800 MB/s Read and Write. I notice BLAZING fast write speed on my 1.1 Gig Photoshop app, and seemed about 40% faster than my previous generation Macbook Air. Also, this new Air model contains PCIe-based SSD modules made by Samsung and is smaller than the previous Air model SSD made by Toshiba.

These new Airs also sport batteries with increased capacity driven by higher voltages: increasing from a 7.3 V, 6700 mAh power battery to a 7.6 V 7150 mAh power battery. Other changes include a redesigned expanded heat sink covering both the CPU and GPU, which must be why this unit runs SO COOL even maxed out.

ALL my apps run perfect on this new Air, including Office suite, and the entire Adobe suite and the rest of my apps, ....which it should, its still running Mountain Lion OS.

I really have to say again, that write speeds on HUGE app instals is just faster than you dare hope for; its just blazing faster than my previous gen. Air.

My Macbook Air has been without a question my most treasured gem of "go-to" Mac product hands down, I own all of them (2 Airs, Macbook Pro, MacMini etc),...I was skeptical when I shelled out $1099 today for the new Haswell Air and its presumed prognosticated "crazy long" battery life and improved speeds overall; but the hype isn't hype, its real and amazing. The mere NOTION that I can overload this Air with App installs, and have a 2.5" HD attached for nearly 4 hours, run 1080P Youtube vids,...and still be at 76% Batt life is just, well, its stunning.

Tested out the NEW dual (stereo) mic and it IS much nicer in record, additionally the camera/vid is much sharper and crisper than my other Mac Air. Considering the price point is lower on these new Airs than the older ones, I give the new Macbook Airs a "110%". Having repaired laptops (non mac) in the past, and owned at least 20X more laptops than most consumers, I don't lightly conclude this is the cornerstone workhorse for everything I dare consider doing, fast got faster, and battery life now is enough to make a crusty "hates everything" person like myself nearly cry with joy. Congrats Apple! Homerun on this lovely gem.

I didnt get this delivered in one day, I picked it up from my local Mac store, I got my buddy to sell it to me 1 day before they officially "have" them which is today 6/12. As for the questions about using this new Air with Photoshop and it lagging on heavy filtering and photo editing, Ive tested that fully and this IS the machine you want for ultimate portability, it works fantastic.

Also of great importance is that this version of Mac Air is supposed to have "nearly double" fast write speeds as the Macbook Pro Retina. And the new Hard storage on this Air has "up to 6X faster than a 5400RPM disk drive" as found in current Macbook Pro which contain 5400RPM Toshiba Hard drives (made by Hitachi for Toshiba actually). In short, YES, this is a perfect "must own" book in the field or travel use for photoshop work, with just blazing fast write speeds, and crazy long battery life.

This new Macbook Air brings TRUE definition to being "disconnected" and "portable" to those who want to do a LOT of work free of the power socket! Genuine portable is finally here, ...no more staring at the battery % to rush to shut down!

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook Air MD712LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

A lot has been written about how great the Macbook Air is. I agree, this is a truly fine thing. Forget the "feeds and speeds" metrics so many people seize on (although the performance is pretty good on this for what most people do), I just feel that this thing is in total harmony with me. It is powerful yet light and agile. I have a 13" Macbook Pro and it is great but a bit heavy. The Macbook Air is insanely light and yet very sturdy.

The one thing I really stressed over was whether to get the 11.6 inch model or the 13 inch model. Years ago I had an early netbook. It was nice as a novelty but it was really underpowered. It turned out the 10 inch screen was just too small. The size of the screen on the netbook was just too much of a compromise (my eyesight isn't what it used to be!). I was concerned that the 11.6 inch Macbook Air screen might be too small also. I really wanted to get it instead of the 13 inch screen because to me, getting a larger Macbook Air just seemed to defeat the purpose of getting a small, light computer in the first place. I really wanted the 11.6 inch model to work out. The price difference really wasn't an issue, I just wanted to have the perfect size for me. I saw a few 11.6 and 13 inch models and I thought the 11.6 inch would be okay but I had the nagging feeling that when I started using it, I would regret getting the smaller version. You know how that goes, your first look at something is brief and you don't really get a feel for how you will use it in the real world. Sometimes your initial conclusions turn out wrong and you regret your choice. Well, I took a chance on the 11.6 inch version and after using it for a while, I am really happy with the choice. It is the perfect size for me for a portable computer. If you are struggling with the same decision, I hope this helps.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Apple MacBook Air MD712LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

I have been using the new Macbook Air for almost a week now. I actually started with the 11 inch because I wanted the lightest possibly laptop, and I used to have a smaller screen, but I guess it was just too small. I was noticing things like a shaking screen and I had been using a 15 inch Macbook Pro with the aluminum keyboard for the last five years. When I got the 13 inch, everything looked and felt just right.

In my opinion, a laptop battery has one major task. It should allow users to do everything they want on their laptop without having to plug it back in. I used it for about 1.5 to 2 hours two evenings in a row doing internet surfing, minimal video watching, and some word processing. The next day I used it for close to 8 hours of word processing and internet surfing. You know you have an amazing battery when the bar goes red, and you check to see that you still have two and a half hours remaining. I did not check exact times, but I think I got over 11 hours before charging it back up (including 3 days of sleeping). I was also surprised to see that it had recharged before I went to bed!

In this day and age, laptop users should understand that you never get the same amount of battery life watching non-stop high quality videos as you would using basic software and the internet. I use a laptop fairly frequently for projects/entertainment, but can not think of one instance in which I would need over 12 hours of battery life. More than 8 hours and my eyes start to blur. The bottom line is that Apple's initial estimate of 12 hours is not off, and I am happy to say that I will not be taking my charger with me anytime I plan to return to my house to sleep later that evening. I don't have to worry about battery life for the first time.

One small quirk is that the time estimates of the battery are sometimes off. For instance, I have checked my battery status and seen an estimate of 17 plus hours remaining. I admittedly got overexcited before it quickly went back down to over 12. The percentage is always accurate, however, and it's intriguing to see how long you can last with 100% battery life remaining.

As for the rest of the computer, the keyboard is great, the screen is nice, but not stellar, and there is a slight glare when I work in direct sunlight though it's nothing objectionable. I think that Apple has set a new standard with this laptop because it's obviously light, but the battery is truly amazing. It's also picking up the internet feed in my house as good if not better than my other devices.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I have noticed an issue with volume fluctuation when watching movies on Netflix and sports on ESPN. The issue persists on Safari and Firefox. Unfortunately, other are having this issue and no one that I could find as of yet reports it as being resolved. This is a shame. This laptop is so good otherwise I am still giving it 4 stars, but this is a major issue. I have downgraded to 3 stars until this gets resolved.

As my first computer I've had in about 5 years, I was pretty worried that I would buy a bad laptop, and I wanted a gaming laptop too, so the selection for something under $900 that could play newer games on Medium-High settings were slim. Luckily I ran across this laptop, and for about $800 with a free upgrade to 8gb of RAM, I bought it, and I'm not regretting it at all.

Two weeks now having used this thing, and while at first I had some problems updating drivers, but after finishing everything, it runs absolutely fine. Better than fine! So far I've played Killing Floor, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, Fallen Earth, and a few other F2P games that were graphically intense. All of these games, I was expecting to be able to run no better than on Medium with smooth framerate, but guess what? Not just High settings, but MAX settings on everything, online, Anti-Aliasing, on the max resolution of 1600x900, with about 40fps. Which, if you don't know, is damn near incredible.

The huge screen, fast processor (which it states in the specs is up to 1.73GHz, but it's actually with the "turbo button" or whatever, ups that to around 2.4GHz), the fan that keeps everything VERY cool, and doesn't heat up even during my long 6-8 hour gaming sessions, and great backlit keyboard all combine into the perfect gaming laptop if you ask me.

My ONLY complaint is the trackpad buttons, which are quite hard to press. Luckily, I only use my mouse really, so it doesn't affect most people.

If you're looking for a good gaming laptop, or even just a laptop that's fast and has a 17" screen, I'd highly recommend this one!

The product was what I wanted. It was in good functioning condition and was timely deliverd. The router bit had two blades as compared to some inferior types with only one blade.

This is a good laptop, it runs mainly all the graphic intense pc games without a problem. I get 150 FPS on League of Legends, and it also runs Mass Effect 2 with high settings pretty smooth. I'd recommend this laptop but the downside to it is that the keyboard feels pretty cheap and delicate, not backlit and gets dirty pretty easily. The audio from the speakers is terrible, it sounds like nothing but static and no base. My speakers are already messing up and i haven't even played much audio on full blast! Basically the speakers are low quality, use your headphones if you have any for music. Overall its a decent laptop for a bargain price.. For those of you who don't know about AMD graphics cards, the one built into this one is more or less equivalent to an NVIDIA GT 640 2GB.

Yeah this lap has everything to start playing Minecraft in a blink, the only thing you need it's a good source of nachos and unlimited supply of soda, aaaand you're good to go!

Besides jokes, this laptop it's a pretty good one, the only limitation it's the Windows 8, but all the hardware it's impresive.

this computer contains all the features i need for back to school, especially the graphics card. the sleek design finish and colour made it look even more exceptional.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite S855-S5164 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed

In my opinion it is better than I expected by design, with low weight and very comfort, in hand design looks more attractive than in the pictures.

For me and my work as programmer is quite enough, The processor and the main memory is very good and enough, and the video card which is ideal for price comparison.

One of the things I wouldn't have liked is a screen, for some reason it is not such a clear image as I expected, it will be good in the future to be able to increase the screen Hertz.

For the games not tested yet :)

The computer as a whole is fine, but keyboard doesn't respond well (not an uncommon HP problem) and the touchpad is sketchy, so I just got a wireless USB keyboard and mousewhich solved the problem.

Pros:

Much faster than expected. 7200 rpm is a huge pro

Sturdy/durable/well-built

Nice brushed metal design

Separate numeric keypad

Nice, roomy keyboard with chiclet keys (HP claims it's spill-resistant as well. I'm not itching to test that at all)

Runs extremely cool

Fan is not that noticeable

HD Webcam

Decent sound (SRS Premium Sound)

Great battery life (I get about 4 hours and 15 minutes with WiFi)

Cons:

Bloatware (Typical of HP notebooks. I spent some time trying to remove those I deemed to be completely useless)

Up/down keys are too small

Anti-glare screen makes colors look washed out

The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I have an extra 4 GB of memory for this laptop but I haven't had the chance to install it yet. It's doing well so far without it. This laptop is able to handle a lot of programs I throw at it. Specs are great for the money. Durability was also a high priority on my list when I was shopping around for laptops prior to purchasing this one. I take this laptop to classes with me and it's holding up just fine; the weight is manageable with the laptop in my backpack. I play games on Steam and I find that it plays the few games I've purchased on there with no problem. Fingerprint scanner, face recognition, drive encryption (in the event the ProBook is stolen), and DriveGuard can be useful to those who need it. All in all, I highly recommend this laptop.

5/7/12: I bought this HP 4530s after my old Mac died... I had it for 30 something days and then the motherboard went bad. It wouldn't even turn on. Just had an orange light blink every now and again by the power cord plug in. Anyway, I took it back where I bought it and they exchanged it out for me. So, I like this computer, it does everything I need it to do, however if this one breaks, I will definitely be back on here to update the rating.

:)

2/19/13 Update: computer is still running strong! (knock on wood) ... I use it for gradschool so it gets pretty heavy usage. It has been a good little workhorse. I'd buy it again if I had to do it all over. :) Hope this review helps someone else!

I upgraded to 8 gig total. Right away, I wasn't happy with the sound. So, for 40 bucks, problem was solved with a Sound Blaster Sound Card. For the non-computer-ites, it just plugs into a USB port--those squre inserts of which there are four here. Then you plug in your headphones or external speakers. We didn't even need the disc for this. I have Bose QC 15 headphones, and it's really not right without the sound card. It makes really nice $400 phones sound like bad ear buds. For me, the sound without a sound card is totally intolerable.

Apparently, with this machine, you need a Blu-ray software program that's NOT the one you get with this machine for absolute best results. Finally, after an all-WEEKEND fiddling with and search, my idea was to try a program we SAW work on a laptop at the store. We found a very high-end gaming laptop using Power DVD (version) 10 from Cyberlink. We found it and went with the upgraded version 12. It works PERFECTLY. I KNOW I didn't buy Titanic in Blu-ray--especially when I already HAD the DVD--for the new features for MORE money, with MUCH MORE aggravation.

So, if you have the new Titanic Blu-ray, it WON'T work on your blu-ray laptop without it. Not this one.

I like how this machine types. I like the Office program it comes with, and the 5520 HP printer worked real nice with this laptop. I loaded the disc, and followed wht it said. It was very simple and very easy. For the record, I only know what they tell me, and I AM NOT a computer geek. I'm a turn it on and go.

That printer prints both sides without help, and also does bluetooth from your phone, as well as copying and scanning for 109.00 at the store.

When the disc for the laptop didn't play all my blu-rays--no Titanic as I said--it somehow apparently corrupted Microsoft Office, and they ended up re-loadeing the entire machine. That was the disc that CAME WITH the machine. FYI.

Make sure you check how you power is being utilized to get best results, or you'll be charging CONSTANTLY.

It runs the Sims 3 without a single hitch--no expansion cards, tho...

The keys don't light up, but who types in the dark?

I found this machine to be responsive, nicely made, with a very nice "instrument feel." Sort of how you can tell a nice car from a lesser one by how things work when you use them. Or musical instruments. A nice Strat doesn't FEEL like the junk people buy their kids for gifts, but then, my dad's got my same mentality, so I never had cheap garbage. A good feel on an instrument makes you want to use it more. Plus, you can always re-sell a real Strat. Sometimes for more than you got it for.

Oh, I had a Gateway that worked 8 years previously. It was never on the internet, as I used it for typing a Pro-tools. So here the new thing of NOT using two fingers to "mouse" is VERY new to me.

Get the Sound Blaster card, pair with nice speakers/headphones, and the DVD Blu-ray download mentioned before, and this will be a nice computer for most people for a reasonable cost. I also like the no-glare screen, but it can be hard to see at times, say if you're trying to work with another person. I just wish I'd known about this before.

Im not sure if i made the right decision, between the razer blade pro and the GS70, there is more disk space and is lighter, but the materials are and look cheap for this price range.

Windows 8 chrashes a lot, and there is a lot of unuseful software previously installed (would be great to have an option yes/no software when you buy)

laptop screen is not soo good for the size and color compared to my previous sony vaio z or macbook pro.

Hope windows 8.1 will improve performance.

I am also using a toshiba dynadock to add 3 more screens, that is working ok, and there is almost no delay between screens.

Felipe

This is the perfect laptop for someone who just wants wants the basics. For the money it is very well equipped. Battery life thus far seems to be a bit short at about 2 hours but is about what I've come to expect. It comes with Windows 8 and no other option so you will have to learn to like (or at least tolerate) the new OS. It gets better after further tweaking and tuning. It is rather lean on preloaded software (trial versions of Office and Norton) but if you're loading your own things that won't be a problem.

I bought it some days ago when i went to E.U.A and I think it's a good laptop according to the price, the only thing I didn't like was Windows 8, but today I changed for Windows 7. It's good to work and play games like Crysis 2, Rage, etc., and yeah the proccesor speed is 1.7 ghz but remember that it can change up to 2.7 with turbo boost.

The processor is really 1.7 ghz not 2.7!! This is false advertisement for amazon to be using. This should be addressed.
