This is one of the best computers I have ever owned, very fast, and very reliable! Sometimes I wish it had a larger screen, but the small form factor makes it easier for taking with me when I travel!

The Z370 is a good looking laptop, but thats the thing. I wasn't blown away with regards to the looks. Its mainly my office computer and also which is what I'll be using for my hobby as a DJ so Im really not pushing the limits of the computer exactly so I can't give feedback how it will perform at its limits.

Well as help to the linux users out there I've tried two Linux OS with it both running as a installed program via Windows to run alongside Windows.

Jolicloud: I first installed this since Ubuntu had some download issues. Jolicloud was a joy to use, had a very iOS look and feel to it so instantly you're at home with the Ui, unfortunately as I use a USB keyboard and 22' LCD TV as the main display in my office it did (weirdly) had some compatibility issues with my Pleomax keyboard so I had to uninstall. Pity since it was such a nice OS to use especially if what you need out of a computer is pretty basic like office/browsing/multimedia. Also for the semi-techie person in me I found it a bit lightweight for my liking

Ubuntu: Ubuntu was seamless with the Z370 and is still for me the best Linux software out there but Jolicloud I can imagine would be eventually the more popular platform for the less techie people out there. I have been out of Linux for about 4 years already but Im glad to be back and is surprised by the new features especially with the Android-ish application market where installing/removing programs is simple and straightforward. Makes you think why Windows never made it that simple for us.

Lastly reason why I use linux is that I want to be worry free when it comes to virus, trojan horses, worms, etc.

First off this was bought to be a gaming laptop. There is no reason to buy this if you are not gaming or need high end 3d graphics. I've been quite happy with it playing Guild Wars 2, Black Ops 2, and more. The fan can get a bit loud under high loads, but it's not obnoxious if you are wearing a headset like I normally am when gaming.

Pros: nVidia 680M, i7, customizable backlit keyboard, great matte screen, 2x 2.5" drive bays plus optical, great speakers

Cons: Taller than standard 15-16" notebooks, this can cause a bit of hassle trying to find a bag.

It is a very good configuration, but for the price I paid a SSD would be fair enough.

Nevertheless, it's a good purchase.

UPDATE 10/16/13: I've had this system for a couple months now. It's still running really well, I'm glad to say. I've had no problems at all aside from drivers needing updating, so I stand firm on my 5 stars. Judging from other reviews people have given, there's a risk of getting a bad one, but that's a risk you ALWAYS take when buying computer hardware. The majority of problems people have appear to be software/OS issues (I've seen Internet Explorer pop up the most in these complaints, so people, please, don't use IE for anything other than getting another web browser. It's not worth the headache.) So once again, I highly recommend downgrading to Windows 7, or at the very least, install the updates for Windows, then update all the drivers, and make sure that's the first thing you do when you boot it for the first time. I think that would've solved a lot of problems people were having.

I also want to add that my battery life is CRAZY. I can sometimes get 6-7 hours out of it on a full charge. Since there have also been complaints about short battery life on this system, I don't know if I got lucky, or if they (again) just got bad units. Either way, I love this laptop and I'm very happy with it, so I still very much say if you want a good priced system with some power to it, this is it.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I bought this laptop after two days of careful research. I know some people can't be bothered to read through a whole review, so here's a quick pros/cons list:

Pros:

Lightweight, slim, very portable

Great hardware, especially for the price

Charges quickly

Touch pad actually works well

Four speakers, so the sound is pretty good

Cons

WINDOWS 8.

The keyboard keys take a little bit of getting used to

Takes a little force to get usb drives into the ports, but just for the first couple times

Video chipset uses system RAM if it needs additional video memory, so expanding the RAM comes suggested

I know computers pretty well, being a computer science student approaching graduation, and having built several custom desktops. So far, this laptop seems fantastic for the price. It shipped incredibly fast, (meaning I ordered it at 7 at night and it arrived at 9 the next morning. I'm starting to wonder if Amazon isn't hiring time travelers or something...) and took only a few hours to charge the battery.

The first immediate problem with this laptop is Windows 8. I can't emphasize this enough. It's slow, clunky, and fails to properly utilize the hardware. It's TERRIBLE for gaming, or anything requiring heavy use of the hardware. My advice is to downgrade back to 7 as soon as possible.

The second problem is the video chip. While it performs well, it also uses system RAM, so an upgrade of the RAM is also recommended. So far, this laptop has played Psychonauts and Oblivion flawlessly on full settings, The Witcher on mid-lower settings, and it'll play Tomb Raider on very low settings. It'll most likely be much better once I clear off the bloatware.

Oh yeah, there's bloatware. Not as much as some manufacturers like to put on, but there's enough to gobble of some of the RAM.

The feel of it is pretty nice. It's lightweight and easy to carry around, and very thin with the lack of a disk drive. The Steel color is also nicer in person than in the picture. Also, the touchpad is easy to use, and actually works, unlike a lot of other models I've seen. I'd still recommend a mouse, just because I find touchpads a little cumbersome, and this one is a bit big, so you may accidentally click something while trying to type, but it's smooth and functional.

So in a nutshell, here's basically what you need to know:

It runs well, but is slowed down by the OS

It's light and easy to carry

The speakers are on the bottom

There are 3 USB ports. Two 2.0 ports on either side and one 3.0 on the back.

There are two fans on the back panel

No disk drive

Perfect for lower-mid range gaming, may have some issues with high end gaming

Recommended RAM upgrade, OS downgrade, and mouse

I'm pretty happy with this laptop, and I'd gladly recommend it for anyone looking for a good budget system. It's still fairly new, so I'll update if anything significant happens.

UPDATE: I just downgraded the OS to Windows 7 and my goodness, the performance went through the roof! It now runs The Witcher on high setting almost perfectly (with anti-aliasing turned off, since that was the biggest performance killer), and runs Skyrim with little to no trouble, though I've yet to mod it, so it runs as well as it did on release. I can now safely say that this is a good gaming laptop. Not the greatest, but I'm impressed.

The bad part was that Windows 8 did not want to come off. I had to battle with it almost every step of the way to put 7 on, and it took a lot of patience. Hopefully others will have an easier time with this. My advice would be to plan to spend at least half a day on the downgrade, but believe me, it is completely worth it.

It also worth mentioning that even though the speakers on on the bottom, the sound is great.

Update 9/8:

SSD installed and this thing is snappy and responsive (also lighter). This laptop only had space for a 7mm drive, so the 9mm case had to go (a little duct tape kept the SSD board from clattering around).

UPDATE 8/31:

Added a 4GB stick of RAM from crucial http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LDLV6S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and got a nice bump in performance (653 vs 450 3dmarks in Firestrike test) and will add an SSD soon.

Also the speakers are quite good! I lucked out and got this model when it was $420, but it seems to be a great deal still (if you are lucky and do not get a failure unit like the negative reviewers). I've taken this thing apart a couple times and taken it to a couple LAN parties and it keeps working flawlessly.

Original Review:

I finally got myself a new laptop for light general use and the occasional LAN party as well as older games. Having a pretty fast AMD APU was exactly want I wanted. The A8-5557M is only second to the A10-5757M. I was very surprised to find this fast a chip in such a cheap laptop. It's also amazingly thin and light.

However, the potent APU is let down by the single-channel 1333MHz memory (soldered to the motherboard, so you can't replace it with 1600MHz RAM) which is a significant handicap for the integrated graphics.

However, it's easily upgraded! Taking back cover off allows access to the single SODIMM slot(unpopulated) as well as the Hard drive, so no need to pull the keyboard out to upgrade bits. I've already ordered a 4GB stick to double the memory as well as the bandwidth, and an SSD to really make it fly.

The battery is low capacity, as expected on a budget laptop. The Li-poly packs are not packaged as a unit, so replacing them in the future may be difficult. This is one of many trade-offs for the thin and light build.

The fans are somewhat loud and high pitched, as expected on such a thin laptop, but they don't bother me much.

I'm not a fan of Windows 8, but that's hardly Acer's fault and I already put 7 on, which runs wonderfully. (FYI, pull the USB 3 drivers off before you format, Acer doesn't have them on the support page, and I thought they would be part of the AMD mobility drivers)

I like the chiclet keyboard, nothing fancy but pleasant enough. The touchpad isn't so great. If you press the corner to click (not separate buttons), the whole pad tilts, and sometimes the cursor moves while clicking.

The screen is your typical 1366x768 budget laptop screen with a gloss finish, works well enough. Things look a bit greenish and washed out compared to my IPS monitor. Once again, well within the expectations of a budget laptop.

Of course, this being a budget model, many of the cons are directly the result of getting what you pay for, and I think you get a lot of value here, especially when you consider the upgrade potential. Similarly, the lack of optical drive and small battery allow this to be such a cheap ultra-thin and light laptop.

I believe I will greatly enjoy this laptop!

Pros:

Thin, Light, cheap

AMD A8-5557M APU

Upgrade potential (Easy access to SODIMM slot and HDD)

chiclet keyboard

Cons:

no optical drive

Small battery

high pitched fans (moderately loud)

1333Mhz Single Channel memory

touchpad

This laptop was to replace a desktop that has been used for general browsing and word processing. I also wanted to add something that would do well with Premiere, Lightroom, and Photoshop. I know I could have spent $1000 in something with an i7 and discrete video card but this has been more than good enough. I knew from mass exports in Lightroom that my work Laptop with an i5 was slower than our other home Laptop with an A8. On the downside I am sure that I WILL be spending another $30 to make the RAM to 8GB.

Hello

I generally do not write reviews. However this particular product and the whole experience with Toshiba customer service has forced me to voice my concern.

I bought this laptop since it was cheap and loaded with many features. I had other options at the same price but i went with Toshiba because of company's reputation.

OK here is my experience;

I bought the laptop and brought it home. After 2-3 days it started giving me blue screen error(some hardware issue). Later On the laptop started to freeze without any reason. It came to a point that it started freezing every minute or so.

I could not return it because it was already past 30 days.

So first i searched google for known issues with this laptop. I was surprised to see that lot of people had the same problem. Somehow there was a faulty hardware in this particular lot that was shipped. It was sad to see that company was still selling this.

Anyway i called Toshiba Support Center to get it repaired (it has one year warranty). It seems the support center already knew the issue with the laptop. They told me right away to ship it to there repair location. I was happy that they are familiar with the issue. Ok here is the fun part; they told me to ship the laptop to there location at my own expense, i.e. pay 25$ for laptop shipment. I tried to argue but they said its there policy. They know that they have shipped a faulty hardware with there laptop and now on top of that they are asking us to pay again for shipping it to get it repaired.

Anyway atleast i was given a choice to ship it with whichever method i choose to. So i went to USPS and i paid 15$ to ship it via priority mail with a tracking number etc.

Now i was trying to track my shipment with USPS to see if it has reached the repair location. Well, the USPS tried to deliver the laptop at there Louisville, KY repair location but there was nobody to receive it there. So USPS left a slip on there mail location to either schedule a re-delivery or pick it up.

As per USPS's new policy they do not do an automatic redelivery attempt. The receiver has to call to schedule a redelivery or pick it up at the post office.

Ofcourse i do not have a phone number for Toshiba's louisville repair center so that i can call them and ask them to schedule a redelivery; i called the Toshiba customer support center to see if they can help. To my surprise, they said since the laptop has not arrived at the repair location; it is not in there system so they can not help me with this. Instead of giving me alternative they hung up on me intentionally twice.

Now my laptop is sitting in some post office in Louisville which will be delivered back to me if not picked up in 15 days (USPS will not schedule redelivery on sender's request).

So basically , myself (the Toshiba customer) is going through unnecessary trouble for buying a faulty laptop. My only fault is that i bought this laptop because of Toshiba's reputation.

Therefore please be careful when you buy Toshiba's products, particularly be aware of the support center.

I am a big fan of everything Japanese; but this incident with Toshiba was surely not soothing.

Thanks for reading this review.

This laptop is perfect with battery life, size, weight, look, monitor quality, overall quality, AND the best part is its got a NumPad which is great if your used to desktop keyboards. Main thing I love about it is its battery life, 5 hours! Even more if you set it down to Power saving mode and run on low brightness, runs for about 6 hours if you're not heavy computing. Keyboard is SILENT and made of great quality. Monitor is the perfect size for a laptop this price. Hard drive space is PLENTY. RAM is plenty for regular usage! Only thing holding this baby back is its processor. It is a dual core AMD 1.3 GHz processor which is fairly slow. It plays HD video smoothly, plays 1080p without any problems. The problem comes up when doing heavy installations or running programs that eat up CPU resources. Other than that, it handles everything from schoolwork to browsing.

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5511 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch HD

Purchased our first Toshiba on this sale strictly looking for a new laptop with Windows 7 still available. This laptop has a beautiful display and we've had no problems whatsoever with the hardware or software during the 6 weeks since we bought it. The only reason we did not give 5 stars is a lack of some small conveniences that we are used to in our older HP laptops, such as a HDD activity light and small buttons to quickly turn off the Wi-Fi connection, and the track pad since we favor an external mouse.

I've had good experiences with you in the past, but this Acer laptop I bought from your site for $553.20 (order #002-2809933-d1921830) has been nothing but an ordeal!!!! The sound didn't function (I could barely hear it, even though all levels were at maximum)...I paid $80 for a computer tech, who couldn't fix it, so I had to ship it to Acer for repair (box COST ME $10). I probably could have sent it back to you, but sent it to Acer, who said they'd try and fix it. I won't buy another big ticket item from you, I can assure you (if I buy anything at all in the future!)

And I have had four Acers...some bought through Amazon...and have had years of trouble free computing. I have not purchased this particular model, but the last line indicates that the reviewer will never buy another Acer...or purchase a computer from Amazon. The experience of the previous reviewer is unfortunate, but has not been my experience at all.

To you suppose that maybe you just got a bad one? Amazon would have helped you work through this.

Honest reviews on Acer Notebook TM5744-6870;NX.V5MAA.003 15.6-Inch Laptop

Audio is obviously "bad' , both via the built in loudspeakers, and with 3rd party loudspeakers ( external) which work brilliantly on my MacBook. Voice sounds like the person speaking is on helium, and music is just plain pathetic. Customer Support tried to help but were unable to come up with any worthwhile suggestions other than "I would suggest that you to perform a system recovery from the hard drive partition to resolve the issue. If the issue related to software, it will be resolved by performing a recovery.

Please note that all your personal data files and applications will be lost, if you perform a recovery. Be sure that back up all the data before performing a recovery. Sometimes the steps below fail to launch the recovery on the first attempt. It is important to launch the recovery using this method at least twice."

Not the kind of message I expect to get for a brand new computer

Within 3 hours of opening I have rebooted 7 times due to system unresponsiveness. I have not installed any new software, right out of the box. Actually, just to get back to Amazon.com to write this review I had to wait 3 minutes for Internet explorer to open and received "Windows Explorer is not Responding" error twice.

I purchase notebooks for our office all the time... This is the first I have purchased from Amazon and by Acer.... It will be the last from either. Horrible product.

Have been shopping for a new laptop for a while and decided to choose this instead of the A500. It costs a couple hundred more but has all the features that I need and want. The big selling point for me is the modern and sleek style. It is beautiful to look at and not chunky like the A500 with the extra number key pad that I do not use. Greater mobility with the 14" backlit led HD screen and a better Intel Core2 duo P7350 processor. The 400 GB hard drive that I can carry everywhere and no need to bring an extra storage device. The build in 3D sensing is a plus so if you drop your labtop the hard drive is protected. The backlit keyboard is really cool and the touchpad also have multi-function. The touchpad looks small but it is the same size as my 14" IBM thinkpad T43 so it works okay with me. The multi-function touchpad is easy to use and you seldom need to use the click bottom. All you need is slightly move your fingers across the touchpad and slightly tab on the touchpad instead of clicking the left button. It also come with the extra 12 cell battery for extended use compare to the standard 6 cell and it does not extend outside the labtop like others. The harman kardon speakers is also a great value and sounds great. All these worth the extra couple of hundred dollars. I tried to customize the same build at toshiba and it cost a lot more than this and Amazon ship free and tax free and no recycling charge so it is a very good buy. The fingerprints and dirt is easy to see and clean with a wipe after each use and it is not that bad to keep your labtop sanitize especially if you have multiple users to spread germs around.

The labtop come with a few bloatware and easy to remove using windows uninstaller. Would recommend to install a good registry cleaner and defragmenter free ware to optimze your labtop after the uninstall. The Window Vista Premium 64 bit is easy to use bur in my opinion still runs slow even with the 4 GB of ram and the newer Intel processors. You definitely need to remove the extra bloatware to lighten the load. I am looking forward to the free upgrade to Window 7 to make this work better. The RAM is expandable to 8GB so it is a plus for upgrade when the RAM gets cheaper in the future. I just upgraded and double the RAM of my 4 year old IBM thinkpad and it runs a lot faster than before with Window XP Pro.

I highly recommend this Toshiba mobile labtop for good looks, mobility and usability in this price range. It does not come with bluetooth but I am planning to get a bluetooth adaptor and it is very inexpensive. Overall, I am very happy with this labtop. I am glad I got this last week because I saw the price increase already.

I did a lot of research on different brands and configurations. I was all set to buy a Toshiba (with an ugly chasis) for its functionality at a big box store when I came to Amazon. This laptop had all the configurations I was looking for at the same price. My only complaint is that I wish it had more usb ports and built in blue tooth. But I added a usb blue tooth dongle and it works fine (other than tying up one of my limited usb ports). The biggest feature for me was that it came standard with a 12 cell battery. Lifts up the back just slightly but actually makes the unit easier to type on because of the angle.

Fast shipping, secure packing, and overall great value for the money I spent. Thanks!

I was very dissapointed that the battery life was not as advertised. It was advertised in all the stores to have a battery life of 8 hours. When I called Toshiba, They said they were not responsible for that advertisement. After fully charging the battery I get a little over 5 hours of battery life instead of 8 hours. When I told the toshiba representative I wanted to return the product and get my money back he said he would have somebody call me to arrange this. He took down my number but nobody ever called.

This computer looks beautiful, the screen is awesome and has many great features. However, the trackpad is awful! I've owned many laptops and this is by far the worst trackpad I have ever used. I have adjusted the settings as much as I can with no luck. I read other reviews where people have said the same thing so I think it must be an issue with the models in this line. It takes forever to get anything done because you often have to click on something 3 times before it actually works. Then the cursor will just shoot out and you will end up clicking on something you hadn't planned to. Everyone says buy a mouse if you use this model but I don't want to use a mouse. Also, the computer seems sluggish as well, not what I expected from a computer with these specs. My Macbook is twice as fast and has half the RAM. I don't want to spend the money on a new Mac though so I am going to see if I can exchange this for something better.

The production run for this computer was October 2010 December 2010. By the end of that year, HP had received so many complaints about this computer overheating that they requested retailers send the computers back to HP. The 3127 suffered too many catastrophic failures within the warranty period. In the next generation computer, HP changed the chip, the motherboard, and the fan.

I am highly suspicious of this model being sold as 'new' over 2 years after it's production run. I am guessing it's a gray market item (damaged or a return), since HP would otherwise have fuly compensated the retailer for the return of the computer.

Check Amazon for current HP models with a better i3 chip (2310, for example), 6gb of ram, and at least 640gb on storage for the same price or less. And buy from Amazon. The retailers selling this model will charge you a 40% restocking fee if you return it!.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion dv6-3127dx 15.6" Entertainment Notebook, Intel Core

First off, this is a 2+ year old computer with 2+ year old technology. I found that a better configuration can be had directly from HP with W7 or W8 for the same price of $499 with current technology.

Second, having owned this model, I know that the 350M chip is a 'gas guzzler', so to speak. It's a power hog and drains the battery faster than any other computer that I have owned. The 7200rpm hard drive adds to this problem. But more than that, it generates so much heat that the fan, which seems to run constantly and at an irritatingly high level of noise, cannot keep up. Though I kept the computer on a flat surface, the smallness of the vent prevented the inadequate fan from dissapating enough heat. As a result, this model has rather frequent shutdowns due to overheating. Beware of this if you plan on using the computer for over 2 hours at a time.

Third, the chicklet keys do not have a bounce. So, they must be struck rather hard to get them to register. If you hunt and peck, this problem is minimized. But if you type with your fingers on the keyboard, you'll have to get used to the need to strike hard on the keys.

I can confirm similar issues with the touchpad and the lack of a numeric keypad is a bit of a pain.. The monitor technology was an improvement 2 years ago but it's been upgraded recently.

I guess my point is that $499 gets you so much more in the current configuration options. The technology used in this computer (motherboard, processor, ram, speakers, hard drive, and monitor) have all been upgraded by HP for the same price.

And one more thing. Though this is advertised as new, it very well may not have a warranty. If the two sellers of this laptop are not authorized dealers (and neither responded to that question when I posed it to them), you will not get the warranty. That began when the computer was purchased and ended a year later. And so if the high level of heat causes a meltdown, you will be paying for a new motherboard and cpu out of your own pocket. How these sellers came to have 3 antiquated models seems odd to me, unless these are returns.

Buyer beware on this product.

I recently received this computer but I ordered one exactly like it a month prior from a different seller. I found that the computer was fine except I didn't receive a backup disk for microsoft like the first one. The battery was great tho but the computer had some softwear that probably shouldn't have had.. ( should have been wiped clean). I wish it did have a registered back up disk. The computer works fine.. just a bit dissapointed.

Okay, I bought a Dell laptop with Window's 7 Pro. I got a Dell laptop with Window's XP. Before I could even figure out that I received the wrong operating sestem, I had to borrow a friend's power cord because the vinder gave me an adapter and power cord that were not compatible.

I am a college student. I don't have a lot of money to continuesly by products to make a device work. I also have finals coming up and need a laptop, so I don't have time to replace products that I did not buy because a seller did not give me what I did buy in the first place.

I am completely unhappy. I wish I could give them negitive 5 stars.

When the motherboard crashed on my old laptop this new one was recieved overnite. My only complaint was that the software advertised was NOT what was preloaded. Amazon offered to take it back and replace it but since it was for College that was not possible without getting behind in classes.

Out of the box we had trouble with Windows 7 which was the program that was advertised to be installed. We had to reboot Windows and start over. The service was just O.K. after calling three times I finally Emailed and got action. I recomend the computer but not the sales agent it was purchased from.

I've had this laptop for almost a month now. So far I'm very pleased with it. I use this laptop mainly for everything a college kid does, as well as development software like Netbeans, Adobe, Eclipse, AutoCAD, etc. I'm also a casual gamer.

Pros: This thing is a beast, incredible performance and speed. I can have something Dreamweaver and Eclipse open at the same time, while watching a video or gaming and you barely notice a difference. the 2nd generation Intel Core i7 2670QM, aka Sandy Bridge, has a great benchmark. It can overclock to over 3.0 Ghz via Turbo Boost when needed. It has a lot of RAM, 6GB is more than enough, and you probably will never use all of it. For the average person, 4GB is more than sufficient. Starcraft II ran just fine on it, even without discrete Graphics Memory. Of course, for the hardcore gamers, it will be best to get a model with NVIDIA Geforce.

750GB is a ton, even more than my external hard drive. Many people don't understand that when you buy, say a 750GB hard drive, you do not get 320GB of space. No, you have not been lied to. Manufacturers use decimal notation (320GB = 3.2 billion)but computers read binary, so it's really closer to 690GB. You always get slightly less than what the manufacturer says, I believe it's around 5% less than what is advertised, so this one holds about 692gb. It's roughly 692GB usable, and more closer to 650GB with all the Toshiba Bloatware. But still, The average person won't ever have to worry about running out of space on this laptop.

The screen looks great. It's a glossy LED-backlit LCD screen. The resolution isn't super high, but this isn't a $2000 laptop. It's 1366 x 768, and that's perfect for anyone really. This doesn't bug me at all, as you can't even tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a screen size like this. But if you really are obsessed with screen resolution, be prepared to spend close to $2000.

There are dedicated hotkeys up by the screen, next to the power button. The Eco button, the wireless button, LED Light Controller, Play/Pause(music), mute, and volume. Very cool and useful.

It does everything that I need without ever having problems. This machine feels cool to the touch, doesn't overheat, even while having Adobe Dreamweaver open and watching a DVD movie at the same time doesn't make it hot. After running for around 4-6 hours, the bottom was still fairly cool. Keyboard is fairly good. Not the best laptop keyboard ever, but I tend to have low expectations for laptop keyboards. This is not a $2000 laptop, btw.

The battery life is fairly good for a machine this size. Usually it's 3 hours, but I can get 4+ hours in Eco Mode(Plus the Environment). However, in Eco-Mode, I noticed that the computer was significantly slower once I was running multiple applications. The Eco-mode does reduce performance, but prolongs battery life, so that's a trade off.

This laptop also has sleep/music and one USB 3.0 port that does sleep and charge. I never use the sleep/music function, but what it does is that you can plug in a headphone jack from an mp3 player and play it through the computer's speakers even when it's shut down. I don't see the point in that, as I could just fire up iTunes when it's on and do that. But pretty cool regardless. Sleep and Charge allows you to charge your portable device(Phone, iPod) via USB 3.0 even when it's powered off, as long as the laptop has a certain amount of battery life. That could come in handy when you are outside traveling and away from a power source. Keep in mind that this feature doesn't work on the other three USB 2.0 ports.

The speakers are amazing, they're harman/kardon. It sounds great, and gives you a mini-theater feeling. It was a lot better than my old computer, I noticed a significant difference. Built in Mic is loud and clear.

I really like the touchpad. It works well, however multi-touch scrolling is not enabled out of the box. You might have to download & install a touchpad driver from Toshiba(search). Then you have to go to the Control Panel, Mouse, Sypnatics, and enable to multi-touch scrolling gesture. You can enable others as well, but the scrolling is the only one I ever use.

The whole laptop design is beautiful and elegant. That design really stops fingerprint smudges, and just looks really cool in general.

Not much cons here, but Cons:

The Webcam. The webcam isn't the best, I believe it's VGA. It's not that bad, just not the best. I don't notice much difference at all between this and a 1.3 MP webcam. How many laptops actually have HD webcams built-in? I don't really video call that often, no this is a non-issue to me. You can always buy an external HD webcam.

Some people might think the material feels cheap and plasticity, and would prefer a different material instead. But personally I think it's fine the way it is.

Toshiba Bloatware. Toshiba usually has a lot of preinstalled software on their machines, including free trials to things like Norton. They're not all useless though, the Toshiba Eco utility helps me prolong battery life, while the Intel My Wifi can allow you to connect at the login screen. Once again, not a big deal to me, I uninstalled Norton and Ms Office Starter though.

No discrete GPU, if you're doing something GPU intensive, I recommend you look for another model with NVIDIA.

Overall, this laptop was a great bang for the buck for me. I checked Toshiba's official website, and a laptop with similar specs as this one would range from 975-1000s. If you can get this laptop in the 700s, then it's a fantastic investment. I'm very happy with my purchase, and who would recommend this to anyone.

Update: Had this for nearly 6 months now, Laptop working perfectly fine. Remember to keep a computer at its peak performance, you have to be doing "maintenance" on a consistent base(ie, Deleting Unncessary Files, Defraging, clearing temp).

Wow. I chose this computer over many others (being a prior Toshiba user swayed my judgement just a bit) because it was reasonably priced and has many features I was looking for. Memory speed was something I would not compromise on, 6 GB is working for me. I have had this out of the box for less than 6 hours and have been AMAZED at the quality. Ohh and on a slightly more personal note.. I have to re-train myself to use the 10-key again!! :) The case of the computer has an interesting finish on it, textured, not smooth. Enjoy.

I have an old Toshiba with a dual core AMD turion processor and to tell you the truth, afternearly 4 years of abuse it still works fine. But I needed something more. I am a movie poster on sites like youtube and I do digital artwork. I needed to get a faster, more reliable computer and this one absolutely FLIES CIRCLES around my older model! I tell everyone that an i7 quadcore processor is no joke! On my old computer, it would rip a movie at about 20fps. This one? An AMAZING 155fps! Just unbelieveable! The 8gb of DDR3 ram is no joke either! And with the new usb 3.0 I can load a 2TB portable drive in a matter of about 10 minutes!

This computer is so FAST it's IRRITATING! Let me explain. On my older model, I'd click on a program and it would take about 20seconds to load. This one? I can load several programs in a few seconds!

One thing that's a bit strange. The entire laptop has an odd texture. It's a bunch of bumpy straight lines from left to right...sorta like the peel out markings of a tire, lol.

That being said, I am giving this a 5* rating simply because 10 or higher isn't an option!

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite P755-S5385 15.6-Inch LED Laptop - Fusion X2

Have had this for a week now and am extremely happy. The i7 processor is very fast and the whole computer works very well. I would rate the keyboard as being excellent with numeric keypad and all. Graphics performance is only average though so I would not recommend this for the serious gamer. My only real complaint with this unit is that it does not come with a recovery disk. Capability is provided however for the user to make their own recovery disks by inserting one or more DVDs and burning using the Toshiba program. If you get one of these be sure and do it.

All in all this unit is an excellent buy when one looks at performance versus price.

I've owned this computer for 3 months now.

The computer itself is gorgeous and works wonderfullythe WiFi is crazy strong when it comes to signal (places that other wifi capable products say only have 1 bar, this computer will pick up at 4 bars no problem).

Runs almost everything that I throw at it game-wise. The only one that I've had issues with so far is having to turn the graphics low on Tera since there's really not a great graphics card on it.

The reason why I'm rating this 3 stars is purely from the keyboard problems. The keys are truly terrible. You have to type really hard and short; Holding ctrl, alt, shift, caps lock turns out to be a problem with it losing the long stroke almost immediately. I don't know if this was a fault of poor design, bad quality-control or what. I mainly watch videos in my bed on this computer, so keyboard-wise, I haven't returned it because its gorgeous screen and audio keeps me using it daily. If I want to play games or type to friends, I usually just use my desktop made for that (however, that's in the living room).

Pros: price, seem very well built, keyboard, size/convience. When it was working, it was fast and ran very smooth.

The Issues: After about 4 weeks it would not boot. I sent it off to Dell service center and they needed to replace the motherboard, hard drive, audio board and reinstall Windows 8. Not sure what the exact issue was and Dell support has been somewhat vague. When the laptop was returned an administrator profile was setup and it would not allow me to create a profile. I was on the phone with tech support for over an hour for them to tell me the OS needs reset/put back on the computer properly (not sure why this was not fixed properly before sending back to me). Anyway they want me to buy an external disk drive and install Windows 8 again.

Overall I'm very pleased with the build of the laptop and wish that it would work.

UPDATE: I sent the laptop back and was given a refund. I do not recommend buying this laptop because of the 4 weeks issues (will not boot). I have found several other reviews stating the same issues as mine. It appears Dell's quality has lowered. I was also not pleased with the customer support.

Seriously. Not a month of use, and the motherboard is dead. It can't identify a boot device. Been on chat with a (friendly, thank goodness) Dell rep who is sending a tech to replace the motherboard. I hope this is a one-time problem. My previous Dells have fared far better...

UPDATE: A couple of months have passed since the comment above and I'm less frustrated with this computer. Dell actually did the right thing and sent a tech to look at and fix the laptop. He replaced the motherboard and everything is working okay now. The tech met me at work and fixed the computer before the end of my day, so it was very convenient. Well done Dell, I'm pleasantly surprised. Now I just hope the computer keeps working (it's great when it does...)

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i13z-8864sLV 13-Inch Laptop

This laptop looked good out at first. It is definitely not a high end product, but then one would not expect this at this price. Things got bad after just a few weeks though as it would no longer boot. I tried to resolve the issue with Dell technical support, but this took so long to do that I returned the product for a replacement as suggested by Amazon. Great service from Amazon, and poor show from Dell. I am told the issue is due to an incompatibility issue between the Windows 8 updates (which the machine downloads automatically once switched on) and the hardware. I am ordering a second laptop like this one an hope to have more luck with it next time.

Update: despite having been sourced from a different supplier, the second laptop failed after just a few days and would not boot. Exactly the same problem as with the first laptop. I tried to resolve the issue with Dell technical support, but this proved to be really frustrating. The technical centre is based in India and the telephone line kept dropping. I had to call 5 times, which was really infuriating because I had to start from scratch each time (warranty code, laptop model, my name, description of the problem, etc). Very disappointingly, Dell could not fix the problem over the phone, and wanted the product returned to them for servicing this would have taken weeks. It was much easier and quicker to return the laptop to Amazon for a refund. Not impressed at all by Dell, I think there are better choices. Do not buy this product.

I have heard of others complaining about the technical support from Dell. It is obvious the staff in the technical support centre are not technical at all, they are just people working to a script. I think they are doing the best job they can, but the support they can offer is limited, and the script makes the whole process very time consuming and cumbersome, especially if like me you had to call back 5 times because the call dropped. I spent over 1 hour on the phone dealing with the first laptop, and well over 2 hours dealing with the second one. Might have been OK if they had offered a resolution, but they did not, so I had to return both laptops anyway.

I like the size and performance of the computer. I like typing on the keyboard. The touchpad is integrated into the palmrest so there aren't any cracks to collect dirt and crumbs.

I installed an SSD in mine. Be aware, that as this is in the "ultrabook" category, you need a 7mm thick hard drive, where as standard 2.5" drives are 9.5mm thick or so. I also installed Windows 7 and it works great. Dell offers drivers on their website. The label on the bottom identifies this as an Inspiron 5323.

The port covers are annoying. I'd rather have functionality over aesthetics. They open just far enough to connect my mouse, but it would just be better if they weren't there, but that is the worst thing I have to say about the computer.

I have had the laptop for two weeks now. I can play games thanks to its powerful video card; watch movies on its great screen; work on my documents and appreciate the wide keyboard squares. So far, no complaints. The only thing (and I assume that to be the case for EVERY laptop, anyway) I was a bit disappointed about was that the battery's charge does NOT last as much as the computer's specs claim it does.

I really enjoy this laptop. I spend around 12 14 hours a day on my laptop coding websites and using the Adobe Creative Suite (CS4/5). Needless to say, I need a laptop that can handle major graphic capabilities and numerous programs running at the same time without lagging. After digging around on numerous sites to check the benchmarks for Intel and AMD chips and talking to a local PC repair shop, I decided to go with a quad core AMD chip. Not only did this save me money (around $100-$150), but gave me the same quality and speed I needed from an Intel i5.

I have owned it for about a month now and although I still stand by my purchase and I enjoy what I purchased, I have noticed a few things that should be considered. Below are some pros and cons.

Pros:

1600 X 900 Resolution

17" monitor

AMD quad core processor

Decent graphic abilities (Dirt 2, Portal, Portal 2, Adobe CS5)

64-bit

4GB RAM (upgradable to 8GB)

Glossy graphitish colored finish

10-key number pad

HDMI output

Windows 7

3 USB ports

1 combo USB 2.0/3.0 port

Notification LED colors/brightness

The power cord connects in a secure, flush connection

Built-in webcam/microphone

Cons:

No mute button

Left shift key doesn't recognized that it's pressed unless you're pressing directly on the middle (I don't know if this is just mine or a model issue)

No Bluetooth (even though it's listed as having it)

I have never been able to get the sleep&charge USB port to work. I'm not sure if it doesn't or I just haven't figured it out. Either way it's a minor annoyance.

The monitor lid is a little flexible in the center. I don't know if it will affect the picture construction over time or not.

Webcam quality (at least in my experience through occasional use) isn't very great quality. It's functional, but the color and resolution could certainly be improved.

Overall, there aren't any major flaws or issues that I have found (unless you wanted internal Bluetooth), but in the case the cons I have listed would be an issue, you might need to consider that into your purchase.

Also, on an unrelated note, I discovered (well actually I was told by a Best Buy employee and found it to be true) that an XBOX 360 wired controller (there is an XBOX 360 for PC controller out there for $10 more, but it also requires a software portion for it to work which (I was told) can lead to a delay at times) can be used without any configuration (other than button assignment in the occasional game) to play games on your PC. I have loved playing games on my laptop with an XBOX controller. Finally a quality/easy option for people like myself that can't manage to master the keyboard gaming option.

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7305 Laptop AMDA6-340M/4GB RAM/500GB/17.3

I'm a video editor who also likes to watch streaming movies on my laptop. 17 inch screen, super fast processor, quad core multitasking capabilities...no complaints at all. It's very user friendly, great spacious keyboard and mousepad. The best laptop money can buy you for the price. i7 processors are overrated, AMD is the best because its quad core is actually 4 cores, not 2 with the capability of stretching.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7305 Laptop AMDA6-340M/4GB RAM/500GB/17.3

I bought this laptop a little over a month ago and at first I loved everything about it, that is until I tried connecting it to my bluetooth printer which is one of the main reason I picked this model, after a lot of trying I finally called Toshiba only to be told they made a mistake and the laptop does not have bluetooth after all and their solution was if my laptop was still within its warranty period, to take it back to the store and get another model.

Luckily I bought an extended warranty and the store where I purchased the laptop gave me a free bluetooth adapter for my laptop to make up for the mistake even though it was Toshiba's fault because they were the ones who said it was suppose to have bluetooth.

Update: okay for everyone that has the constant fan on, fan noise issue on acer aspire s3, i found a solution. it's a software someone wrote that changes the cooling parameters, i've tested and now my fan runs only when the laptop is warm, not constantly, and it runs quiet, making the laptop awesome. download the one for the s3: http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/711908-acer-7551g-fan-control-utility-fixes-overheating.html

Update 2: For people having trouble with the trackpad being too sensitive. you can change the sensitivity in the control panel mouse settings. i turned off some of the multi touch gestures and lowered the sensitivity and it's much more usable with windows 8. I'm still figuring out how to maximize battery life.

Pros: Thin, light, good build, keyboard and trackpad work good (need to adjust sensitivity to your liking) Screen is sharp enough and bright enough, wifi works great, hybrid sd card works great, boots up in 10 seconds from cold. and 2 seconds from hibernate. shuts down in less than 5 seconds. (you'll have to do some windows 8 speed tweaks to optimize it, i suggest advance system care which has lots of startup options).

cons: fan noise, fan is constantly running, slight heat from the bottom on the hard rive side.

Works very nice is fast, light, nice screen, comfortable to use. The keyword is very nice and the touch pad is great, amazing desing.

Best Deals for Acer Ultrabook Silver 13.3" S3-391-6046 PC with Intel Core i3-2367M

The price of this year-ago model is cut to half. You can't beat the price!

I had 2 TRUE Ultrabooks but I need another entertainment unit for my 4-year-old girl. This low-cost quasi-Ultrabook serves my need even the processor is slow, and graphic engine is not suitable for gaming. The only concern I have is the hybrid SSD/HDD may not survive the abuse of a preschooler. However, any SSD Ultrabook is going to cost twice or three times as much.

Pros: Both USB ports are 3.0. Full size HDMI port. Very light.

Cons: Windows 8.0. Touch pad too sensitive. SD card sticks out of the laptop.

Lack of touch screen and SSD are not consider as cons as you don't expect them in this price range.

Honest reviews on Acer Ultrabook Silver 13.3" S3-391-6046 PC with Intel Core i3-2367M

Pros

Thin, and light

Responsive and smooth

almost 1/3 as expensive as Macbook Air and about the same weight and thinness

Large touchpad compared to other laptops but smaller than Macbook Pro.

Cons

Audio and viewing angle of the screen is bad but what would you expect from a $400 laptop?

Keyboard is not bad but is not good.

I used Macbook Pro before but can't get my hands off this laptop because of its thinness and weight.

This laptop is exactly what I was looking for. Light, thin, very portable. Set up is quick, easy and painless didn't even need to look at the instructions. Connected to my network without any effort whatsoever.

Contrary to many other reviews, I find Windows 8 easy to use and intuitive. I think I may like it better than previous versions of Windows. But, if you don't like it, it's easy enough to just click on the Desktop tile and never use the tiles. Easy peasy.

It boots up quick and does everything I need it to fine for surfing the web, and for my writing software. I haven't tried anything resource heavy, but I expect it would be great for any normal office usage.

The only complaint I have is the battery life is very short. The Amazon listing didn't say anything about it, but a PCMag.com review said that Acer listed it at 5.5 hours, and their tests gave it 4 hours 45 minutes. The computer itself says it only has 2.5 hours when fully charged, but it actually runs down much faster than that. I would say the battery only lasts 1.5 2 hours, max. I will update my review if I find a way to improve this. I will be contacting Acer to see if there's a way to fix this problem.

Otherwise, I'm very, very happy with this machine! Exactly what I was looking for for a reasonable price.
