I bought the 14Z Ultrabook. It came with WINDOWS 8 installed. I bought a Microsoft Pro Pack to upgrade to WINDOWS 8 PRO. When I put the code, the computer lost its original activation and the upgrade was not installed nor activated.

I called Dell and they told me that their Laptops now are not compatible with any thing related to the WINDOWS 8 OS, even if it is from Microsoft. They could not help me to get the original activation again either, because they are not using the 25 digit code anymore. The Sticker comes without that number too.

I called Microsoft and after a few minutes working with my Laptop, they found that the number for my OEM windows code was empty. They asked me to call Dell again and ask for the number.

Dell told me again that they don't use that number any more. I asked for technical support (my Laptop was one week old) and they told me that it was going to cost me because when I installed the WINDOWS 8 PRO Pack I LOST MY WARRANTY.

Then I went back to Microsoft and they transfer me to a specialized techincian located in India, and they Waive all fees. The technician worked for more than 4 hours to restore my Windows 8 without loosing all the info and software licenses that I already had installed, They succedded, but they were unable to install the WIN 8 PRO Upgrade.

I had to keep my computer because I have installed a lot of software and loaded it with information, but I wont buy another computer from Dell in my lifetime. By the way this American Laptop is produced 100% in China.

Conclusion: Excellent service from Microsoft and no service at all from Dell; the worst I have ever had from anyone. They only gave me headaches.

My recommendation: NEVER BUY A DELL COMPUTER.

I want to add two comments, because today May the 3rd. I am still having problems: The activation done by Microsoft lasted until Dell did its first automatic update, Then I lost it again.

Then I received this "private message " from Dell through Facebook

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. On your system, you may go to Control Panel> System and Security > System . Look for the WINDOWS ACTIVATION at the bottom of the page and click on a hyperlink. That should activate the Windows operating system.

Let me know if it helps.

Regards,

Fernando Thursday 4:50am

My Reply to Fernando (DELL):

Jorge Ros Sr.

No Fernando. It doesn't works. First, on Windows activation it says that Product ID is not available. I don't have That ID and there is no way to enter it. Also there is no hyperlink.

I have taken the problem on my own and decided that it requires a Radical Solution. I bought two different software: 1) A Windows 8 System Builder Disk and 2) A another set of discs for my Windows Office (Amazon already delivered this).

I expect the Windows 8 disks today (They will be delivered today Friday the 3rd. by Amazon). I already backed up all my files and documents.

I will reformat the Hard Drive and will do a clean installation of Windows 8 that will be activated with a license ID provided by Microsoft. Then I will reinstall Office. Transfer again my files to the Lap Top, and 3 or 4 other programs that I use and Voilá Dell.

I am only sad that because I HAD TO SPEND MORE MONEY THAN WHAT I PAID FOR THE LAPTOP; TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM that got worse due to the ignorance of all the people from Dell's Technical Support and the Poor service that I received. (For your Info: Just having to buy a new Windows and an Office amounts to: $207.00 dollars plus my other software, plus my time. All this just to fix problems that should have been taking care under warranty but due to negligence and ignorance.

A Few minutes later I added this additional comment:Thursday 4:53am

Jorge Ros Sr.

One more thing: Trust me, to abandon the use of the 25 digit key for an embedded key in the Motherboard that no one can reads has been one of the worst decisions ever made by your company (with the complicity of Microsoft). And almost all of the technicians at customer support were unaware of a solution and lacked the proper training to deal with it.

I really like this computer. I was a little hesitant about getting a Windows 8 machine, but found it very easy to learn to use. Once I got the hang of it I found it very fast and responsive, easy to move between different applications. The display is very bright and crisp and the speakers are a big improvement over my older Dell laptops. Since my last laptop was 5+ years old, I'm enjoying this light, fast little Dell.

Run and run very fast from this computer and any Dell product. Their customer service must be the worst in the business as I type this I have been listening to crappy dell music for over thirty minutes. Brand new computer for my son and it has already frozen up and doesn't work. Will never buy another dell product no wonder they are in such crappy shape

Notebook starts fast, is lightweight and met all my needs.

It is for sure not a gamer notebook, but for someone looking a fast terminal for using the web, emails, powerpoint and excel, it is just the right thing. Go for it, price is a bargain.

Regarding the battery, it is not the best thing in the market, but for price paid is more then enough.

Only con is Win8 that is quite cumbersome. Waiting for the 8.1 to go out.

So far, no issues with this computer. We've owned several 14-inch Dells previously, and each does the job. Good value, I think, for the price. Windows 8 takes some getting used to.

I've known about Alienware for years now, but had only ever known one person who owned one. I knew the reputation, I knew the look, I knew the reviews. So I replaced my 17" VAIO with this behemoth. Let's review.

FIRST: Sleek, black, huge, heavy for a laptop. But this is not the kind of laptop to tuck under your arm and lug around the office; you set it down and PLAY. Same goes for the power supply the thing is comically over-sized. I felt like a hobbit holding it! But with a need for 250W, it has to be that way.

SOUND: Without a doubt, the best and richest sound I've ever heard out of a laptop. Bass is strong, the treble powerful. No tinny, cruddy speakers, these.

HEAT: The advantage to all of that aluminum is excellent heat dissipation. Also, there are dual air intakes and dual exhausts in the back, directing the heat away from you. (Too many laptops vent to the side!) Playing Borderlands 2 at max settings, the laptop got slightly warm but nowhere near the point of discomfort. So it may weigh down your lap, but it won't singe your short-n-curlies.

THE ALIEN FACTOR: Sexy light schemes, MASSIVELY configurable touchpad, set of bonus keys for gaming on the left side of the keyboard, tons of peripheral slots. They know their audience.

PERFORMANCE: This is difficult to rate, because nothing I could do was the least bit challenging to the system. "Crysis 3, maximum settings? YAWN. Tell me when you have some DIFFICULT software to run." You are going to have 1-2 years after buying this system of total max-settings freedom. No lag, drag, or latency doing anything.

DOWNSIDE: Hardly any. The worst thing I could find in this laptop was Windows 8.

SUMMARY: Go big or go home. If you don't mind the heaviness of this game-eating monster, there are no downsides, there is no competition, you WILL be assimilated.

I bought a M18x-R2 in October of 2012. I was very impressed with the laptop, It is heavy, but I'm not carrying it on an airplane so I don't care. I use this computer to replace my HP 18in laptop (no longer made) that ran so hot that it would turn off from overheating and almost burn my hand near the exhaust. The Alienware lets out very little heat and makes very little noise. The screen color is brilliant. The one problem that I had, was that when I tapped on the keys, the cursor would jump all over the screen, very frustrating. After talking to support 3 times I finally found out that there was a tap to click option on the touch-pad, once that was turned off the problem disappeared, and the computer has run great ever since. Support did a good job of taking over my computer to fix the problem, all I had to do was watch them make all the changes necessary. The computer needless to say is very fast, and runs my programs well.

The screen went out August 10th. Sent back to Dell and they received it August 13th. Well here it is a month later and they still have it. AND every time I call them (India) to see where it is and whats going on they tell me they have to escalate the case. When I ask them what that means they dont answer me. After 5 times calling, last week they finally told me that the screen needed to be replaced and part was finally in stock. Well called again and again they have to escalate case. This is my first Alienware purchase since Dell bought them and I have never dealt with such incompetance with a $2000.00 product. I personally think they lost it and I will be filing a claim with them at the end of the week. Save yourself time and aggrivation and order anything else but a Dell/Alienware.

I have loved this day from the very first day that i got it. I always play games on this laptop and it runs at maximum power non stop. It is the best laptop i have ever owned. I also use skype on it everyday and it never runs out of steam, or ceases to amaze me.

I highly recommend this laptop if you are big into gaming.

I would have given this a 2-star review because of the very bad stock switchable video ATI drivers (which are HP's fault since they force ATI to go through them and not release drivers separately) but that has changed very recently.

First off, trying to find a 17+" screen on any laptop for less than a grand is a hard search it's mostly Vaios and gaming Acers which are not cheap. Not to mention a real graphics card, an I5, 4 gigs of ram, and Win7. It's also got a pretty decent stock battery, which is large as stated in the other review but it's large in the right way, because it pushes the back up off the surface so it can cool without you having to suspend it over something. It's also surprisingly light: with a 17" screen and a full keyboard with numpad I thought it would be a brick but it's not bad at all.

Initially I was very annoyed at the switchable graphics driver which lets you go between the onboard Intel GMA chip and the separate ATI HD4560 because it was very flaky. For example if you let it sleep while ATI was selected, the switchable driver would no longer work until you rebooted, switching took a long time, and about half the time when you came back from sleep on the Intel GMA chip it would flash red green and you would have to put it back to sleep and try again.

That just recently changed however as they finally updated the driver, now it's quick to change and all the issues seem to have disappeared.

I would probably stick to the Intel GMA as much as possible because it heats up quick with the ATI card and most people don't do anything that requires the ATI card, I can watch full HD movies on the Intel GMA chip because the i5 is optimized to work for it and onboard graphics aren't as terrible as they used to be.

I doubt it would actually overheat if you left ATI on all the time but if you're on Intel GMA it's pushing out a slightly warm breeze whereas with the ATI switched on its definitely hot to the point where it will get uncomfortable if you're anywhere near the vents. Why make it work extra hard to cool down if you don't need to? I would say it's not a failing of the laptop it's just the way things work, graphics cards get hot and it's in a tiny enclosed space, on the onboard graphics it's actually much cooler than my old laptop which had a tiny fraction of the power this does.

As far as performance capabilities go I develop on it etc the heaviest test I have given it is Fallout: New Vegas and switched on the ATI card and it works as well as a desktop, much to my surprise. So the power is there if you need it but you usually don't.

Summary: very good laptop for the money, wipe the HP stuff off (my own personal preference since HP stuff is notoriously hard to root out completely, preferably with a format/reinstall) and update the video driver and you will have a very good deal.

If you want an even better deal grab the AMD one for $100-$150 cheaper which makes changes it from a good deal to an incredibly good deal as it's almost exactly the same performance-wise.

I bought this laptop mainly for photo (and maybe video) editing.

Pros: This is really a powerful laptop. Works well with CS5. A good replacement for my desktop.

I like the widescreen which helps me work on 2 documents at the same time.

Battery performance is excellent. I like the graphic card switching method which saves power.

The HP advisor is very helpful.

Cons:

The mouse pad buttons are not that user friendly. The left and right buttons are both hard to press. You have to find a 'sweet spot' which is the center for you to press it. Or you can just use a mouse or a tablet.

The paint finish is not that good especially at the edge. It easily chips off. The rubber finish also fades faster. (I just got this laptop for less than a month)

A little bit heavy but manageable. Lighter than the other 17" laptops.

Not that travel friendly. So if you are always on the go, try the 14 and 15s...

I replaced an older Dv7 laptop woth this one. It is tough getting used to. My older model had all the bells and whistles while this one is basic. the touch pad is very hard to get used to. The level of the pad is the same as the laptop itself so you need to look down to make sure you're fingers are correctly placed. This pad does not respond like I wish it would. It stalls and then goes haywire.

The screen is much brighter than my older model and it's easier on the eyes. I am hoping with time any issues I am having will resolve themselves. I will give an update soon

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv7-4180us 17.3-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 7.75 Hours of

I was shopping for the most laptop I could get with a blu-ray drive under a thousand dollars and this fit the bill very well. The i5 intel processor impresses, it has a dual video card setup one for basic use that conserves battery power, and one for "gaming." Overall, I do like this laptop but it does have a few niggles I would like to mention.

Cons:

1) The touchpad is horrible. Use a mouse. I constantly battle the stupid thing.

2) The blu-ray drive is very difficult to open/eject. Crazy as this sounds, the eject button is tiny and you have to press it in deeply with your fingernail or it just won't eject. I find it easier to right mouse on the drive in "My Computer" and select Eject from the menu. Come on HP! Give me a simple, larger button to press to open the optical drive.

3) The battery is a large 9-cell that has a large hump at the bottom. It nicely props up the laptop on a desk, but it is heavy, doesn't allow a nice flat profile to place in a bag/backpack, and doesn't even get close to the advertised battery life. I'd like to order a flat 6-cell version but if this one doesn't last that long, I'd hate to see how the "little" battery performs.

4) A lot of HP "Junk software" loaded on this thing. Takes time to uninstall it all.

5) No restore DVD included in the box.

6) HP accessories like extra batteries or AC/Auto power adapters are quite expensive.

Pros:

1) Plays blu-rays on my flatscreens with 1 HDMI cable and all the included software works great. Or hook up the VGA cable and use the headphone jack.

2) The large 17.3" screen is awesome, bright, and very crisp and clear.

3) I haven't really tested the processing power but this thing rates very well on the Microsoft Windows 7 performance scale. All my programs launch quickly and it is a pleasure to work on. This has replaced an AMD Dual core 2.8 Ghz desktop PC as my "workhorse" everyday computer.

4) I love the fingerprint reader.

All-in-all I rate this a good buy and would certainly purchase it again.

One of the best laptop I have bought so far. I've been using Dell for the past 4 years and would like to have a change and bought this laptop.

It has wide 17inch screen for a good movie experience and with Beats audio experience. Played Avatar blu ray and graphics card did it work correctly but was not able to render the graphics in 2 scenes.

I was not much satisfied with the speakers. Even though, the sound level is high but it creates a jabbering noise which is kinda not good.

Other than that this is a very good laptop of its kind.

As others have mentioned this laptop has a few "issues" as follows:

1. First one arrived DOA. Ordered from Tigerdirect, which has a local outlet, where I brought it for exchange. They only had the floor model left--and discounted it an additional $150 for me! At approx. $750, such a deal!

2. However, with that in mind, buying extended warranty might be advisable.

3. I've tested this laptop on the following games: Modern Warfare 3, Batman Arkham City, Skyrim, Crysis 2, Portal 1 & 2, and Minecraft. All games tested ran flawlessly, although I did have to lower the resolution from "ultra" to "high" for MW3 and Skyrim.

3. This laptop is heavier than even my 18.4" laptop, and is also larger than most 15" laptops, will not fit into a 15" laptop case. The styling of this laptop was inspired by stealth jet fighters and looks pretty sharp, so I guess its just the price you pay for beauty.

4. As another reviewer mentioned, when compared to the 3GB Nvidia GTX 360M with 3GB RAM, the video card in this laptop has only 2GB RAM, and is slightly "crippled", meaning it runs at a 128 bit bus width, and not the full 192. It's still a high-end, Class 1 video card, contains all the most desired features, and runs all the most "graphic intensive" modern games wonderfully, but why?

Oh well, I actually bought this laptop as an Xmas present for my 8 year old nephew. He didn't really ask for or expect a gaming laptop, but the netbook I orginally bought couldn't even run Minecraft, much less any of his school applications, and he's not exactly allowed to "surf the net." The specs and performance of this laptop are truely impressive, even with a slightly "crippled" video card.

Aside from supporting DirectX 11, and OpenGL 4.0, even though the monitor renders in 2D, the Nvidia video card supports 3D, meaning that you can hook the laptop up to an external 3D monitor via HDMI, for 3D video gaming, and streaming 3D internet content, including 3D movie viewing!

At least at this time, Nvidia only provides support though for certain 3D monitors that employ ACTIVE 3D technology, and also requires a 120HZ monitor (ie., refresh rate of 120 fpm "frames per second), however, I understand that drivers are now being developed to support passive 3D technology as well. I have a passive 3D TV, and connected the laptop via HDMI to see whether it would support 3D gaming. It kind of worked, but not very well.

5. Although games run smooth as silk, we've experienced some buffering issues when playing youtube videos. To resolve, I went to the Asus ROG forum, and took the advice of others, flashed the bios, installed the latest drivers and ran CCleaner, to clear out temp. files. Seems to have resolved that issue, for the most part anyway.

As I notice other reviewers have had similar issues, I wouldn't doubt that might be the very reason Asus discounted this particular model so deeply. Laptops with comparable specs cost almost twice as much, and for the savings, the issues experienced are fairly minor. So far anyway.

Great performance, construction and pricetag! It's ASUS! I love it!

BUT...

I have 2 things to complain about:

I dont know why ASUS's choice was the 128bits gtx 560 and not the 192bits...

I saw in many forums zillions of problem about the magnet sensor that tell when the lid is closed or not, well, my asus came with this and i dont know how to permanently fix this problem, im in brazil and I cant sendo to RMA (global guarantee?? maybe not).

Bought it, had it shipped, received it in perfect working order. It's a great laptop with a super-bright screen. Everything's as it should be, except for one thing: there is no way the published dimensions are right.

I bought a Targus Revolution XL specifically because it was designed for 15-16 inch laptops, and this beautiful monster of a laptop wouldn't fit. Had to get a more boring backpack instead. The only reason this review isn't 5 stars is because there's less choices for bags and protection.

EDIT:

The USB 3.0 driver on the machine was buggy -it wouldn't play nice with my Western Digital 1TB portable drive. Windows said the driver was up to date, but I was able to update it from an external site and that fixed the problem. (The drive would be detected, but transferring anything over 1MB would cause it to be "disconnected" and would prompt Windows to reformat the drive.)

The last year Circuit City was selling this laptop on black Friday for $910 dollars with 2 years warranty + 1 year of accidental warranty included.

When I saw that I did not think it twice, I bought it right away! the next day out of stock!

If you are looking to buy a cheap gaming laptop with awesome features and quality, only Asus meets the requirements!

My fist laptop I owned was a Dell (before buying this Asus G53SX) and Dell customer service lied to me saying that the XPS editions can handle everything, any game, + they are REALLY USELESS when you are having any issue!!! Months later when Battle-field 3 came out......... I was lucky if I was able to enjoy the game for 30 minutes without lagging!

When I was buying the laptop online the specs said 15.6 inches.... when I opened the box, the screen was pretty big for being a 15.6 inches.....

I measured it and is 17 inches... No idea why!

Asus Republic of gamers G53SX does a AWESOME job running games!

I run Battle field 3, Call of Duty MW3 in low or medium performance without any issue or lagging at all (only when the server is bad).

Battery life is AWESOME!!!!!

After 3 hours of doing research, listening music, I have to run to get my battery charger.

Asus offers a battery saving software which is kinda cool because when you unplug your laptop, this software does everything to save energy!

Sound quality is pretty good, not awesome, but let's say 8 of 10!!

Do not spend $1600 dollars to buy an Alien-ware!

The Asus G53SX does the same job than any Alien-ware laptop for less money.

Bad build quality. Let's begin my story with ASUS when I purchased this computer last year. I have always used ASUS motherboards in my computers because of their high performance, so I decided that their laptop would be suitable for my needs. I originally looked at Alienware, but decided that ASUS gaming computers had more performance in my price range. Since I have received this computer it has been nothing, but a nightmare. First, within a few weeks my soundcard decided to die and had strange feedback noises from the microphone. The power cord plug that goes into the computer also snapped as is a seemingly reoccurring theme with ASUS laptops. The pin design does not work and when I sent the computer in I requested a different power supply. When I received the computer back I was astonished to find that the repair center did not package the laptop with any wrapping and as a result the screen and case had huge cracks. I sent the computer back to the repair place.

By the time I got my computer back for the second time (about a month and a half later), ASUS had not fixed the power cord problem and the built in memory card reader no longer functioned. Now for the third time my power cord pin has broken in the laptop and will have to be sent back for repairs. ASUS support at best has been minimal as the technicians do not seem to care or listen to you when you talk to them about their bad design. I am a college student and have been without my laptop and unable to easily complete my work several times as a result of ASUS. I am extremely frustrated with the quality for the amount I spent on a laptop. The computer works good for gaming when it actually works, but I would advise you to save your money and go with Alienware because at least you get to deal with Dell's support.

I bought this laptop couple days ago and am very satisfied with it. I thought the design might look ugly just looking at the pictures, but the design is very nice.

Anyways here are the pros and cons

Pro: nice sleek design, comfortable keyboard, good performance, reasonable graphic card, cheap price (at least based on my price), light weight, and does not get very hot

Cons: lack of bluetooth (which i hardly use), lack of some ports such as memory card reader (which again I hardly use), sound quality is not very good, arrow keys kinda smooshed together with the rest of the keypads (not really a problem), lack of hoktkeys (which means you have to hold the "fn" button to control the volume and etc)

I really think this is a decent laptop for decent price (unless they raise the price up). Even though there seems to be a lot of cons, i think those are really minor issues (at least for me) and the pros outweight the cons. So if you are look for a decent laptop for a cheap price, I recommend this product.

Initially I was going to go for a more expensive laptop, and then I stumbled upon the Samsung q430 in a best buy as I was browsing that section of the store. Typically I'm wary of any pc's that are in the local stores as they usually get the watered down versions of laptops where you can find the better, more advanced models online.

While not on sale anymore, it was still relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of the other laptops that were no faster. icore5 2.4 GHZ processor, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, 512 MB Nvidia video card, built-in SD memory card reader, DVD-burner...what's not to like!

Also, while it's easy to overlook something as simple as keyboard layout...it was one of the bigger selling points for me in finding a new laptop. I used to have a powerbook titanium G4 which had a nice keyboard layout, and even now the mac book pros have in my opinion the best keyboard design available in any laptop. The q430's keyboard is quite similar, with the raised, solid, black keys that are responsive, spaced out nicely and provide nice feedback. So once I made the decision to go with a non-mac laptop, I was hoping I could find something comparable in the keyboard area. And the Samsung q430 I think is the closest you can get to having a mac book pro keyboard on a pc laptop. I love this keyboard perhaps with the exception of a smaller than usual shift key, I love it.

If there was anything I would change about the laptop, perhaps it would be to not have a glossy screen as sometimes the reflection can be annoying. But nevertheless the screen is bright and strong when I need it to be and I notice it less and less.

Wireless works great, 3 usb ports, decent built in webcam, fairly lightweight and has HDMI out! I have even dropped it once already, transport it a lot and everything seems to be going smoothly with no issues. For the price, and even price aside, I think you can't go wrong. I truly feel this is a solid laptop, especially when coming from the world of sturdy, apple quality laptops previously.

It's a winner!

I have been trying this laptop for two days now and I am very satisfied by it.

The Good:

1. Light for its size. I had a Dell XPS M1330 before and this feels lighter than that even though its a 14 incher !

2. Fast processor. The turbo boost on its Core i5 really makes it snappy for everyday work and also for photo and video editing. The new Office 2010 runs smoothly on it.

3. Looks expensive. The aluminium on its lid and around its keyboard give the product a distinct look.

4. Graphics management. The intel HD and nVidia 310m graphics switch seamlessly according to the programs needs. Runs 1080p HD video (native and flash) smoothly without any hitch.

5. The Keyboard is this laptop's strong point. Its chiclet style and good to type on.

6. Heat management is great on this laptop. The CPU and graphics card temperature didn't exceed 65C even after several hours of (moderate) use. The outside also felt cool.

The Bad:

1. Touchpad could have been better. The scrolling seems incosistence. (I am not sure if the touch pad or Windows 7 is to blame)

2. The battery life could have been better. It is giving me 3.5-4hrs on a charge with moderate use.

The Verdict:

Its a steal. I was looking at the Envy 14 before this but with this laptop's price, features and looks, I am glad I got it.

READ TO LEARN ABOUT SOLVING ISSUES REGARDING THE PROBLEMS ON SOME REVIEWS.

This laptop had all the necessary components you would need. The design, processor, and graphics are the best in its price range. Considering that I was able to buy it for $649 including the $100 Amazon promotional code. The Intel i5 IMO is the best processor since it balances battery life and performance unlike i3(lacks performance) and i7(short battery life). On the graphics, It can play most of the latest games at low-medium settings only. Design...just look at the pictures. Everything else are just average for a laptop (screen, spekers, etc.) The things that bothers me is the Wireless Card and the wrong description of Amazon about having a Fast-Start feature.

Pros: Intel i5-460m, Nvidia 310m!!(laptops with dedicated graphics are worth $700+), Design (looks like a Mac)

Cons and Solutions:

*The Wireless Card is below average and as what some reviews says that it disconnects occasionally is actually true. It happened to me but I was able to solve that problem. To repair it update your driver by downloading it on wikidrivers not on samsung site

*The Samsung Fast Start Feature is not available on this laptop. I tried downloading the software but it says that this laptop does not support it. Is there anyone who can confirm this?

*Trackpad issues, not true. Mine work perfectly except for the two finger scrolling which is not important since there is a traditional scrolling at the side that works fine. Some reviews says that the mouse is too sensitive, that is because the Momentum feature is turned on. Configure your mouse settings to remove undesired features.

*Battery Life sucks! 2-3 hours of battery life on power saving mode. Wifi-on, Lowest brightness, and internet browsing. If you don't mind staying near a power outlet this laptop is fine for you.

*Issues in streaming videos like youtube during full screen, don't use the update in samsung site. Search for Nvidia 310m driver 266.58, it will solve your problems. If your too lazy too search just look for the link in the comments.

To sum it up, this laptop is worth $650-$750(considering specs and quality) based on my several months of researching and comparing. I'm telling you right now that I did the best way of knowing the worth of a laptop and this one is a really good deal if your budget is really tight. I even checked the prices during Black Friday but no deal matched the "Specifications to price ratio" of this laptop if it would remain at the $600-$650 range. I definitely recommend this laptop for Students with tight budget and desires average gaming capabilities. Btw, I owned this laptop since December 16 2010 and reliability test is still ongoing.

I bought this yesterday while it was on lightening deal (699) with free 1 day shipping. And it arrived today at noon.

I've bought and sold (on ebay) many laptops due to my gadget addiction. So I think I know a thing or two about laptops.

For the people who are considering this. Things that I couldn't find it from other reviews.

(i) it's pretty big. The picture on amazon makes it look like 13 in notebook at best. But when you actually take it out of the box, it's pretty large. I've owned laptops from 10in to 15in laptops before. By far, this 14 in (wide) is very nice. 13 in macbook was even small for me. And 4*3 15in laptop was just not right. So this is bigger than what the pictures make you think.

(ii) Feel? Cover is blackish graphite aluminum and inside (palm rest too) is brushed aluminum. It's not too heavy (compared to macbook pro 15in, this feels lighter). This look elegant. Does this match up to Macbook pro? Probably not. I just don't like latest gen black keyboard macbook pros. Know that this samsung's bottom is plastic. Which I don't mind. If you have macbook pros, you know it's gonna get scratched up in a month. I like this computer.

(iii) keyboard: I hate thinkpad keyboard (some maniacs love it but I just can't understand that. How can you like buttons that are stiff and require more strength to type on? I never went back to Thinkpad). I love dell keyboards (that of notebooks). They give you not to soft but spring response which makes typing easier. So if you know some of the keyboards, this Samsung is in between thinkpad (talking about feeling, not the way it's made) and dell. That should clarify the feeling.

*Someone said in a review that these keyboards are rubbery and he likes it, but there is no rubbery feeling. This is as plastic as it gets. That review was kinda misleading to me.

(iv) I used it one day. Battery came at 60% (charged), so it took about 1hr to reach 100%. And it took about 2hrs to run it down to 10%. It's not great of course. But these days, schools & hotels all provide multijacks so no problem.

(v) cord; no one talks about this probably because they are not in the context of school. I'm doing my Doctoral next year. So length of powercord matters. It's not long. I've seen some wacky long ones to shortest (macbooks). This thing is about macbook (or pro)'s powercord. It's not long. And for students, you just need to get seats near the power outlet.

(vi) screen. it's cover to cover glass. So it looks and feels nice. I never had screen like this. But this is better. It's like iphone without cover. Think that way. iphone in INCASE and bare iphone. If you know what I'm talking about. There is difference. Shade or cover around the screen (by incase) makes screen look different. This is a plus. Very nice. Resolution is not super (my eyes are used to iphone4 or super amoled of phones). Don't expect that from this. But it's standard.

(vii) fast start (not cold boot, but from sleep to wake up; that's what samsung calls it); it's pretty fast. Definitely a plus.

(viii) Sound; is pretty big. Just watching youtube but had to turn it down.

(ix) fan noise; again something important for students who study in libraries. This thing makes audible fan noise when you install programs etc. But in normal MS word typing situation, it does not. So This unit won't make others mad in the library.

*forgot to tell you about touchpad. it's small compare to macbooks. Actually tiny. But it's ok. This thing doesn't have Bluetooth. So I again have to pay for Nano receiver mouse or something.

(x) The reason why I went Samsung this time for the first time was because Samsung makes memories and LCD/LEDs. Never owned Korean made laptops until now. Tired of Taiwan made. Sick of American made (I had multiple Dells and a HP. Don't know why I keep going back to Dell though it breaks down usually). Sorry. Time to go Korean. When Apple advertises that they make both hardware and software, it's misleading. They make body and assemble parts themselves. But you will find their harddisk is from toshiba. LCD from Samsung etc. This unit (just checked) has Toshiba hard, Atheros wireless. Both I hate. Both gave me failures before so I remember. This time the hard disk does not make as much as noise like old harddrives made by Toshiba. But you can still hear it. Wireless is so far so good. Don't know about memory and LCD. I have two LCD tvs. Samsung and Vizio. Someone said all LCDs are the same? No. It's not. That's why I wanted to try Samsung.

*i5 vs i7. I have i7 XPS Dell desktop. I can't feel the difference. All these processors, to me, don't make much difference. I bet I am not feeling difference between XP/celeron and this premium one. So don't worry about i7 and how it's better for multitasking. Also I did 1080p youtube. It take time to load but once it's loaded, there is no hiccup like in netbooks.

(xi) Windows 7 is a great OS. I've had everything from Linux, Jolicloud (same as Chrome OS; almost), Vista, XP, Apple OS X..this thing is not bad. Not bad. Start up time is fast around 20-30 sec. People; don't believe Apple never crash myth. Apple freezes all the time. Just go to mac store. "genius" appointment and see how many units they bring back to repair. If you are like some people (mac is blacktie, pc is jean), I have nothing to say. It's all about looks for some people. But you don't have to type on macbook pros to make it bestsellers. You know who are real deals? People who have macbook pro17. Most others just buy it just to try out or to feel better about themselves. (I went Mac after Vista; that thing is just a horror story isn't it. As hardware improves everything has to be faster. But somehow they make more memory consuming OS. So after 10 years, with i5 i7 processors,pc is still slow and lagging. Right? You don't feel much difference between your pc from 8 years ago and now; only thing you can feel is the hard disk size. That thing is a good. 500GB? Wow that's great. My first toshiba had 5gb hard disk) Remember, John Farve writes on a dell and became youngest speech writer for president.

Nor I suggest you buy cheap pcs. You get what you pay for. I think this unit is reasonable. I probably will sell this after 1.5 years (that's how long I keep laptops). But so far, this is not bad as a pc. it's 699 now! What? After selling this as a 4hr lightening deal, amazon dropped the price down on all pcs since yesterday. If that were the case, I "could" have gone to 15.6 in samsung. But soon I have to travel to Orlando to study and I don't regret.

This is a good buy. Buy it while it lasts (don't know about this seller, notice it's not amazon selling this now). Not bad. Not bad Samsung.

I've had this laptop for almost a week now and so far, I'm satisfied. I've had HP's in the past and have always been happy, so I stuck with HP this time.

Things I like about this computer:

-Price was a deal!! Ordered here on amazon for $520+shipping.

-GREAT fan, keeps the laptop cool, even after hours of use.

I like the finger print reader, helps to have an alternative to remembering so many passwords. Also like the added security, just in case it gets stolen...

The i3 processor is fast. The video and audio quality works great. The 320-GB hard drive is more than I'll need for music and photos.

Things I don't like:

-Unfortunately, my docking station from my previous HP is now outdated and isn't compatible with this new laptop.

There is an extra column of keys on the left side of the keyboard, so now when I think I'm hitting the "a" key, I keep hitting the caps lock. Just takes some getting used to.

Overall, in my opinion, so far, the good outweighs the bad and I'm happy with my purchase and will continue to purchase HP's in the future.

This laptop is outstanding, I've had it for a few months now and have not experienced any kind of problem! It's extremely quick, the i3 processor is perfect, the graphics are gorgeous. I noticed some people have been complaining about the trackpad but I have never had an issue with it, there is a light on the top left corner that shuts it off so if you accidentally hit it when your typing you can just turn it off and vuala! problem solved! Don't hesitate on this laptop HP did it right!

This laptop is very well for moderate use. It handles daily tasks very well. The battery is horrible. I unplug the charger at 100 percent, and it says 3 hours and 14 minutes remaining. The laptop build quality is also mediocre. Overall, this laptop is great for mediocre type business and the price is great, if you want long battery, this is not the laptop for you.

This laptop has been the best of 3 I've tried. The "business class" laptops are built sturdier (like they should all be bu not the 100% plasticisized feel). The mesh metal matrix encasing the display is light and strong... not that uncertain feel of brittle casing crunching in between your fingers when you need to do an "emergency grab"! The graphics are NVidia. I felt uncertain about that, since Nvidia had to settle a class action lawsuit related to defective GPU's in this type of laptop model, however graphics are steady and consistent. These defective graphics processors seem to have placed in any number of laptops.I found them in a Dell Latitude 620, much to my dismay. Perhaps the vendor corrected this prior to the sale . On that note, SWM Electronics Recyclers took care to optimize this unit to it's full potential. That's been a most pleasant surprise. There are no post-market optimizations I expected to have to do myself. I'd certainly seek this vendor out for repeat future purchases The unit arrived with a SSD, additional 2GB RAM to allow for a 64 bit Win 7 Pro experience "out of the box". The 2.2 G.Hz. Intel Processor allows for a smooth, fast, seamless 64 bit OS flow--nice!. (I'll delay loading Linux for a while!) Linux users-the Thinkpad is reported to be highly adaptable our favorite distros. I'll update this post someday after an Ubuntu Gnome install.

The BIOS and CMOS are well plotted out and readily accessible with the blue "ThinkVantage" button .The 3 USB slots and 1 SD card reader, and audio jacks have extra reinforcement to give them longer life. Keyboard is nice sized, responsive. No cheap construction noted. Some critics complained of the IBM imprint on this model, however I find it to be well thought out for a laptop-not just something slopped together to end up on the scrap-heap a few years later.(There's nothing like planned obsolescence.) This unit does not run hot. Sitting on top of my thigh doesn't make me feel like I'm going to fry. (my Toshiba, does that well.)

At eight hundred and fifty dollars (what I paid) it's a great laptop. It's even better at seven fifty! It has everything one could want in a laptop, processor power, memory, Blue-ray/dvd, good screen resolution, a well designed keyboard, wireless-n and so forth and so on. One can look at the listing for specifics.

There are a few things missing like a back-lit keyboard (for night work) and Windows 8 is a lot worse than Vista (which BTW got a lot, lot better with patches in terms of functionality Vista, however, always ran slow as gravy on a cold day). That said, Windows 8 is designed for tablets; it's not built for laptops without a touch screen. I can't tell you how many times I dragged my finger on the mouse pad to have Window 8 do something I never intended. That said, with a few tweaks (like adding Start Menu X, for example) it's gets "workable."

The "metro" thing, however, is just god awful.

And while this is not a Windows 8 review (the system comes with Windows 8, after all), it is much, much, much faster and stable an OS Micro$oft has ever put out. Not a single system crash to date (5 months) and runs all my apps at warp speed, so I'll keep tweaking until the interface is to my liking. Now if the improved system performance is a result of the native operating system or the quality of the laptop (perhaps both) makes no nevermind to me, I just know it's one of the best laptops I've ever owned particularly at the price point.

Finally, I'd like to add a couple of points. To begin, some background, one thing I really love about this laptop is how light it is. Don't get me wrong, I've owned a lot of laptops, Dells, Gateways and HPs. Of them all the Dells (two of them from 1998-2004), while nice, seemed to break apart/down after 3-5 years. The Gateway I bought in 2005, I still have! I gave it to my parents for email and web-browsing, It still runs great but that was the last of the original Gateways.

In 2009 I bought a "high-end" HP. It was one of the HDX-17 with all the bells and whistles. What a POS. In a year that Chinese piece of cr*p was falling apart. It finally died a violent and painful death Dec of 2012. It barely made it 2 and 1/2 years and it was the most expensive POS I ever bought at 1500+. Never HP, never again. But there were things I noticed about it in comparison to this one. The HP was very HEAVY in addition to being poorly made, this one just the opposite.

Everything on the Toshiba feels really solid which at about 1/2 the cost and a 1/4 of the weight of the HP is shocking to me!

Lastly, if I had one critical observation it would be the track/mouse pad. The buttons function well but if there's anything on your hands: oils (natural body), water (sweat) the ability to control the pointer fails. So, I'm washing my hands and drying them thoroughly before any computing, which is good hygiene but a bit of a drag insofar as there can't be a drop of perspiration on them and forget about lotion of any kind. Wait that's kind of funny isn't that? "Poor bastard is trying to compute with sweaty hands and lay off the lotion buddy...". True that, but it's a bit more than the obvious and I find myself (with no medical condition relating to excessive hand sweat) using a wireless mouse I picked up for $20 to avoid a bit of frustration with what I consider an overly sensitive trackpad. However, when using the laptop on the train or at school the mouse doesn't always get used and in order to not be annoyed, just make sure those hands are very clean and dry.

If only Windows 8 was actually designed for PC computing this would be the greatest laptop/deals of all time. I have to give it and Toshiba 5 stars!

The system specifications are great and compliment Windows 8 well in performance.

The laptop is light weight and not bulky making it easy to carry around.

The AMD video card is decent with 2GB but do not expect top quality gaming experiences.

The sound when using headphones is not as loud as previous Toshiba laptops I have owned.

I have an older Toshiba Satellite M100 series with Windows XP, it still functions today after 7 years and I believe with proper care this newer series laptop will last as long if not longer.

As to start out this laptop appears good in numerous ways. For the casual gamer or replacement of older laptops this is a definite yes. Upon receiving and using it here are the first impressions.

Keyboard

This is a typical laptop keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right side. I was used to no numeric keypad on former laptop but it is a nice addition. If you are not used to an extra keypad it will take a little adjustment on getting used to it when typing but no big deal in my book. Some people like illuminated keys on the keyboard but this one is not. I am in no need of illuminated keys so it fits my uses.

Screen

The screen is 15.6 and is HD. To my eyes an HD to a non HD is not a big deal. For people who want the most super clear screen this will probably work. For the causal gamer, college student, or basic video watcher this is great. If you examine the picture the screen is held up by two hinges. These are sturdy but the screen appears to bounce a little bit at times. If you want the screen to remain totally solid with the rest of the computer while moving around it will not. It bounces a little with every movement but if you sit still and it is on your lap then it is not a problem. If it is on a table it doesn't bounce because the surface stays still.

Mousepad

The mousepad is one of the better ones in my opinion. On some samsung i7s the mousepad is nothing but a huge pad with no left or right click separated. This is part of the 5 series and the mouse buttons are separate from the pad itself. For people with bigger hands it may be annoying due to that the pad is closer to the keys but if you are already used to a mousepad close to the keys no big deal. The mousepad is sensitive but takes some time getting used to. If you are one who uses bluetooth mouse then no big deal.

Video Card

This has a Nvidia and integrated intel 4000. You will have to tinker with the settings in Windows 8 and the Nvidia toolbar to set the primary video card. For gamers you will have to set the each game to nvidia card or use global settings. The Nvidia is suitable for casual games up to high graphic games. In the high graphics games the FPS may fall lower at times. For my personal needs as I am a causal gamer it works just fine.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is good and suitable for the average user. It is 750 GB and the speed is fairly good. At times it seems to be a little slow once in a while but then it doesn't really bother me. If you are expecting instantaneous speed then I would say look elsewhere.

Case

The case itself is aluminum in most parts except the bottom which is a type of fiberglass/plastic. If you ever go to a best buy and look at the Samsung series 5 it is exact same body. For the person who likes aluminum case I would suggest a definite yes. For those who prefer all plastic case then a resounding no.

Weight

The weight of the entire laptop is around 5.5 lbs but to me it seems light. It does not feel heavy or bulky. My former laptop was a tad more heavier around the 8 10 lbs range so this feels light especially while sitting on the lap.

Heat of Laptop

When running games it runs warm and not hot for my needs. If you have pants on, have laptop on your lap, the fan kicks once in a while, but it does not feel hot. My former laptop ran much hotter and required a stand with fans. This one so far seems to run in a good warm ranger with higher graphics. The output of air is on the left side and in front.

Speakers

The speakers are made by JBL. The sound is average to good but to me it's just a laptop. Laptops are not designed to be boomboxes with super sound. For the causal gamer it's just fine. For a person who wants super loud sound and wild bass I would suggest look elsewhere. The speakers can get loud but I prefer to keep sound in the minimal to low range.

Main Complaint

It is preloaded with Windows 8 and extra bloatware. Windows 8 takes time to get used to if you are used to vista, xp, and 7. Windows 8 was programmed with touchscreen in mind which is why it functions with all the apps. You can tinker with Windows 8 and download programs to make it look like Windows 7 or Vista which is what I've done. There are Apps already preloaded which can be easily removed.

Overall, I feel this was a good replacement and should work for a casual gamer, college student, business exec, and home laptop. I will update this review as time passes to keep others informed on the usability over time and how long it will hold up.

EDIT 1: After getting the computer all set up, took off bloatware, it seems to run much smoother. The speed of restarts during updates of Windows 8 is very slow. After updates of Windows 8 finished, seemed to pick up speed.

EDIT 2 1 week after purchase: Since receiving the laptop and using it some of the pros and cons are becoming more obvious. When playing games with the mouse pad over and over it takes more time getting used to than previous laptop. If you play FPS with a mousepad you cannot aim, move, and shoot as much. When you use keys to move and try pointing your gun it doesn't work so well. You have to compensate. If you have an external mouse then this is nothing.

The sound from the JBL speakers I must admit was better than my first assessment. The sound on this laptop can get LOUD if you crank up speakers and settings.

The USB 3.0 ports are slightly tight. When plugging in a usb cord or device you have to push it in just right because it is a snug tight fit. Speed for the USB 3.0 is very good. A 4 GB transfer took less than 2 minutes when I was transferring old files from former computer.

Surprisingly older games run just fine on this laptop such as Deus Ex, Civilization III, Half Life 2, etc. The only odd about this is the screen resolution is 1366 x 768. Many older games do not come with this preset resolution.

Overall, still completely satisfied.

EDIT 3: Approaching 1 month since purchase. Upon using this laptop over and over again with games one phenomenon that is common with high graphic games is the heat of the video card and stability. On utilizing higher graphic games it gets quite warm to hot. If it is on your bare skin lap it could burn. If you have something that shields your laptop then no issue. So far when the laptop gets excessively warm to hot it has NOT crashed with the blue screen of death like with my older laptop which ran vista. In my book this makes me quite satisfied.

Another phenomenon with Windows 8 is it has run older games better than vista. Upon purchasing games off of steam such as the old Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade/Fate of Atlantis, LOOM, and Monkey Island which is DOS based it runs just fine. Games purchased off of Good Old Games website such as Nox and Heroes of Might and Magic IV runs just fine also. The only con within the first month is the power cord runs out the side of the computer. For some people it may be nothing but from my experiences with laptops this can potentially be a flaw due to if the cord has to reach an outlet on the opposite side of the computer. This causes the energy port to bend a little. Over a period of time this could cause a loose connection with the constant bending. A former laptop of mine this happened to. When the power port was in the back of the computer on another one of my laptops the cord would not have to bend left or right. This though is a personal preference and can be accommodated by being mindful of the cord and adjusting when needed. Overall, I am still satisfied and getting more surprised at how well this is as a replacement laptop.

EDIT 4: Approaching 2 month mark with this laptop. So far my primary usages for this laptop in the past 2 months has been gaming, writing a dissertation, watching movies, internet, videos, and digital pictures. Still no blue screen of death with higher graphic games. No major negative issues. Speed is still good, graphics still performing at top notch, speakers no issues, mousepad holding up to extreme usage in games, no problems with battery, cover is resistant to scratches (although sweat hand marks and fingerprint marks are evident when tilted at the right angle but this can be cleaned), and USB ports functioning good. Higher graphic games perform well such as Hitman:Absolution, all the GTA games, Portal 1 & 2, and World of Warcraft on High settings (Ultra settings also but it gets hot). Overall, still completely satisfied and happy with this laptop.

I was very eager to get my HP Pavilion only to find that they all have an overheating problem that leads to a shot motherboard. Unfortunately even if you replace the motherboard the heating issue will not be repaired so you can look forward to replacing another motherboard until you buy a Mac in frustration. HP will not admit this is a design flaw and they need to address this so until then Bye-bye PC, Hello Mac.

I bought this laptop just over 1.5 yrs ago, but finally decided it was time to write a review on this monstrosity.

I paid over one thousand dollars for this, and having had positive experiences with HP in the past I thought this would be the perfect laptop to lug around when starting University.

Okay, I will begin by saying that I hardly ever carry this laptop around, and usually keep it sat on my desk or use it while lying in bed. The few times I have traveled with it, it has been for short extents of time and I would carry it in a highly-padded computer bag. I am positive I took better care of my laptop than many people, however, I guess that doesn't change a thing if the laptop is already poorly made. I will now list the problems I have encountered in my DV5-1000us from the day I got it up until today (1.5 yrs later):

*The easy pad (touchpad) controls stopped working many times during my first few months of use, however, now work 99% of the time. One thing that has not changed, although I believe this is simply a design flaw is that you can't skip, pause, play, or stop songs on itunes unless you have the itunes window displaying immediately infront of you. Because of this, I deem these controls useless since it's just as easy to press any of these buttons simply from the itunes window. It is also very annoying when you want to control itunes, but can't simply use the touchpad.

*The sound card: This computer has an awful sound card simply because it continually turns on and off. I have a password-login which I must use to access my computer, but if the computer falls asleep, sometimes the sound card turns off which requires me to close and reopen my computer screen, relogin and then wait a minute for my computer to allow me to actually use it while it makes a loud engine sound. It's not that bad, but quite an annoying flaw.

*The keyboard:After a few weeks of using my laptop, the keyboard buttons would easily jam and sometimes the plastic holding them to the laptop would pop up and the keys would essentially "break." They all worked, however, many became loose or stiff after this.

---And today my keyboard simply stopped working, so I am now typing on a usb keyboard (which is actually much better than my laptop keyboard and it only cost $18!) I should mention that although this laptop cost over one thousand dollars, the keyboard is not water resistant and also easily attracts dirt under the keys. It cost nearly $400 to fix my laptop keyboard (and I live in the Silicon Valley right next to HP!), and simply put: This computer itself isn't even worth $300-$400!

*The "paint job" -when you open up this laptop you will see "small, smooth metal squares." These are painted on and can easily be chipped off -my laptop is a perfect example!

*The "mouse paint job" The mouse pad on this laptop is a great size and I love that it is centered, rather than placed to the side like in some other HP DV's and Toshiba Satellites, however one day I came home after class and while studying next to it, noticed that the mousepad was scorching hot. I figured, "Hey, it's an HP!" HOWEVER, just a few minutes later I go to browse the internet and notice the metal paint job on the left-hand cursor had BURNT OFF! This was only after around six months of use, and to this day nearly the entire left-hand cursor is burnt-black.

*The graphics card: You wouldn't think it would be bad, and it's not that bad...BUT it is a very cheap, OLD graphics card and can cause computer games to skip around.

*The INTERNET: I have LOST COUNT of how many times the internet on this computer has suddenly stopped working. You will be browsing the internet and WHAM! You will close the lid to your computer and come back to it and WHAM! No matter how or when it happens, this laptop will find a way to disconnect to the internet (another reason I should mention that I simply keep it in my apartment room). It is NOT easy to reconnect the internet when this happens. Especially if you do not have access to the router, it is basically trial-and-error each time this happens -and it happens quite frequently and usually waste a few hours trying to fix it. For some reason there is no solution to this problem, because one method can fix the internet one time, and not work at all the next! ---The touchpad wifi control sometimes can mess up and stay on "disconnected/orange" even if you try and try and try to enable it and make it blue. This is NOT a portable laptop, because many times it doesn't even pick up wireless points many other laptops do!

*The safety-rubber attached to the laptop IS ATTACHED WITH FREAKING ELMER'S GLUE!!! Okay, so maybe it's not...however, a few of the pieces of rubber placed on the very bottom and screen fall off. They literally will just melt off...You will feel something sticky and realize the rubber is melting off.

*built-in microphone of poor quality. I didn't even REALIZE this laptop had a built in microphone like my mom's new mac, simply because...It doesn't pick up sound unless you have your mouth to the screen -and how many people do that?!

*CD-rom sometimes doesn't function -you will insert a CD or DVD and be all stoked to listen or watch it when nothing pops up. You go to my computer>CD/DVD-drive to notice it hasn't picked up the fact you just put a cd or dvd in. Sometimes it says, "NO DVD/CD INSERTED." and jot-fully pop out the CD/DVD door as if you really needed that lol So again, you should restart your computer...and get used to it if you buy this...

Okay, I know i doesn't sound like alot, but trust me...these cons really get to you after a while, and I haven't even mentioned (although I think this happens to most HP's), all the things which stop working and error messages which randomly pop up.

I know this is a very LONG review, but if it stops you from buying this laptop or at least lets you know what you are getting yourself into, then I'm happy.

I WANT to like this computer, and put aside all of these issues...but I just can't. If this were a $300-$400 computer (the cost to fix my keyboard haha), then I might shrug it off as annoying as it is...but what ever happened to getting what you paid for?

I do not recommend this laptop to anyone and the only reason this review is so long is because the problems-list associated with the laptop...goes on and on. :/

I've had this lap top for over a year now and I am impressed to say the least. I use this machine every day for hours at a time for work, school and personal use and it still works as good as the day I bought it. I noticed a lot of people have had trouble but I assume they must of got a lemon. I def recommend this lap top. It has been great so far.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv5-1000us Entertainment Notebook PC

I purchased this computer in July of 2009 and it has never failed from day one. I use it for work and home and for heavy graphic use, AutoDesk products including 3DS Max. I purchased another HP machine (Dv6) because I could not upgrade this one any further to work with the newest software I need. I would recommend the Dv5 any time and will continue to use mine as a back up till it dies. For me HP has made an excellent product.

I've been using this laptop for a long time now. It's great. It's light weight with an ultra bright screen. It's great for surfing the internet. It does lack a little bit of memory, but I added 1 GB of memory for $20. It's a great laptop if you are looking to use it to surf the net, listen to music, or do your next paper/project.

There are two things in my life that have lasted beyond any of my wildest expectations: my 2003 Volkswagen Golf and this Gateway ML3109 Laptop. I believe I purchased this in the winter of December 2006 brand new for $450 and upgraded the RAM right away. Since then, I have been using this laptop on a near daily basis for countless hours of fun, studying, games, relaxation and past numerous girlfriends (two of which were marriage material but had issues let's not get into that).

It's big, heavy, hotter than molten lava and quite cumbersome but it's been with me in almost every hemisphere through my travels and the hard drive has probably spun more revolutions than the vertical rings of Uranus. It is now February 28, 2012 and still running strong. I do not know how this could be. Everyday I fear it won't wake up or turn on but I now consider it more reliable than humanity itself. It is possessed by a friendly demon that won't go away, and although I will soon jump light-years ahead (relatively speaking) to an Ivy Bridge (once Intel decides it made enough money off the Sandy and finally release it), I will cherish this rugged piece of machinery until the wheels fall off. It's been through Vista, upgraded to XP, and has been running Windows7 ever since it came out. I don't know what the future holds for this laptop, but I know whatever happens to it or me, nothing will ever separate the keystrokes that was had and will be had, on this ML3109.

I love this 18.4" tablet. It runs smoothly and is very responsive to my fingers.

Battery lasts forever and it's so light for being so big.

I've had this since early June and have been so incredibly pleased so far. It runs just like a desktop computer, but it allows me to hold it on my lap and browse like a giant tablet. Everything flows so well, and loads FAST!! The best thing is that when I need to really type i can get out the Bluetooth keyboard that came with it and type like I would on a desktop.

The XPS 18 is the missing link between tablet, laptop, and pc. It brings all of the strengths from all 3 categories while having none of the weaknesses.

The only real problem area that I've noticed is gaming. It absolutely works on many older titles, however not the best with some newer; at least with the i3 model. If you want to do some gaming i would recommend getting the i5 model or higher. That version also comes with double the RAM of the i3 and it'll tell during performance.

This is absolutely the smartest choice to buy whether you want to do some light gaming, browse the web, or take it on the go to watch movies. You can sit down at a desk with a keyboard for the traditional desktop experience or sit down on the couch or lay in bed with it like a super sized tablet to surf the web or watch a movie under the warm covers.

Great for simple tasks, lightweight for its size. No Ethernet port, no HDMI or display port, only 2 USB ports. Might work as laptop replacement for some users.

Best Deals for Dell - XPS 18 18.4" Portable Touch-Screen All-In-One Computer - 4GB

Amazing little computer.

Out of the AIOs (All In Ones) -and I've checked them all -this is easily my favorite at the time of this writing. And I'm normally a Dell hater, and a Mac fanatic! (seriously!)

It's light enough (around 5 pounds) so you can drag it from room to room, or even pick it up and show people things.

You can also travel with it. Just throw it in your luggage with your clothes, and you have a FULL computer with you!!

A travel computer was what I was initially looking for, because I tend to get more work done on AIOs like iMacs than I do on anything else. For travel, giant laptops are no fun. They're always awkward, weird and kinda yucky. But this thing is fun! It's so light and enjoyable. It's also less fragile seeming than something like an iMac. It's MEANT to be moved. It's kinda like a gigantic (but still light!) iPad, that you can actually use creative and productivity apps on.

With Windows 8.x, it's starting to become almost as easy as a Mac. (and almost cooler looking with the live tiles)

With around 4 hours of real battery life, YES, you can use it unplugged! I can hardly believe you can use a full powered PC unplugged! woohoo!!! (I don't know how they fit such a massive battery in, given it's so light)

All in all, this was a massive surprise to me. I looked at every All In One on the market, and from online reviews, I didn't know this one would be as awesome as it is. But it is awesome, indeed. Try looking and playing with All In Ones IN PERSON, and you'll see exactly what I mean. It does edge out the iMacs for portability. Apple needs to learn a thing or two from this Dell. (I may try to make it into a Hackintosh)

Requests for the future:

Full Haswell chipset, so it works ever faster and gets better battery life. I don't know why Dell hasn't updated it yet. Haswell + XPS 18 make a perfect couple.

Real GPU option, not just the Intel crap. I have creative apps that use Nvidia GPUs only (CUDA) to speed things up. Even a lowlier Nvidia would mean the world to people like me. (and the world to gamers!)

And, uhh... I dunno? I find this PC so much more usable and lovable than almost anything in the market, it's hard to say. Maybe a full SSD option would be nice?

Seriously... go out and try this thing! (they have 'em at many big box stores as well as Dell kiosks) It's surprisingly enjoyable! Handily beats Lenovo, HP, Samsung, Apple and all the rest. Good work, Dell!

Honest reviews on Dell - XPS 18 18.4" Portable Touch-Screen All-In-One Computer - 4GB

There are plenty of other detailed technical reviews on here that cover it pretty well. However, I am going to sum it up. This is one Dell got right. A laptop, desktop and tablet all in one and it is very responsive.

The only negative is you can't play graphic intensive games.
