I've known about Alienware for years now, but had only ever known one person who owned one. I knew the reputation, I knew the look, I knew the reviews. So I replaced my 17" VAIO with this behemoth. Let's review.

FIRST: Sleek, black, huge, heavy for a laptop. But this is not the kind of laptop to tuck under your arm and lug around the office; you set it down and PLAY. Same goes for the power supply the thing is comically over-sized. I felt like a hobbit holding it! But with a need for 250W, it has to be that way.

SOUND: Without a doubt, the best and richest sound I've ever heard out of a laptop. Bass is strong, the treble powerful. No tinny, cruddy speakers, these.

HEAT: The advantage to all of that aluminum is excellent heat dissipation. Also, there are dual air intakes and dual exhausts in the back, directing the heat away from you. (Too many laptops vent to the side!) Playing Borderlands 2 at max settings, the laptop got slightly warm but nowhere near the point of discomfort. So it may weigh down your lap, but it won't singe your short-n-curlies.

THE ALIEN FACTOR: Sexy light schemes, MASSIVELY configurable touchpad, set of bonus keys for gaming on the left side of the keyboard, tons of peripheral slots. They know their audience.

PERFORMANCE: This is difficult to rate, because nothing I could do was the least bit challenging to the system. "Crysis 3, maximum settings? YAWN. Tell me when you have some DIFFICULT software to run." You are going to have 1-2 years after buying this system of total max-settings freedom. No lag, drag, or latency doing anything.

DOWNSIDE: Hardly any. The worst thing I could find in this laptop was Windows 8.

SUMMARY: Go big or go home. If you don't mind the heaviness of this game-eating monster, there are no downsides, there is no competition, you WILL be assimilated.

I bought a M18x-R2 in October of 2012. I was very impressed with the laptop, It is heavy, but I'm not carrying it on an airplane so I don't care. I use this computer to replace my HP 18in laptop (no longer made) that ran so hot that it would turn off from overheating and almost burn my hand near the exhaust. The Alienware lets out very little heat and makes very little noise. The screen color is brilliant. The one problem that I had, was that when I tapped on the keys, the cursor would jump all over the screen, very frustrating. After talking to support 3 times I finally found out that there was a tap to click option on the touch-pad, once that was turned off the problem disappeared, and the computer has run great ever since. Support did a good job of taking over my computer to fix the problem, all I had to do was watch them make all the changes necessary. The computer needless to say is very fast, and runs my programs well.

The screen went out August 10th. Sent back to Dell and they received it August 13th. Well here it is a month later and they still have it. AND every time I call them (India) to see where it is and whats going on they tell me they have to escalate the case. When I ask them what that means they dont answer me. After 5 times calling, last week they finally told me that the screen needed to be replaced and part was finally in stock. Well called again and again they have to escalate case. This is my first Alienware purchase since Dell bought them and I have never dealt with such incompetance with a $2000.00 product. I personally think they lost it and I will be filing a claim with them at the end of the week. Save yourself time and aggrivation and order anything else but a Dell/Alienware.

I have loved this day from the very first day that i got it. I always play games on this laptop and it runs at maximum power non stop. It is the best laptop i have ever owned. I also use skype on it everyday and it never runs out of steam, or ceases to amaze me.

I highly recommend this laptop if you are big into gaming.

I love this thing. I did a lot of shopping around and finally decided on this product to fit what I felt I was going to be using it for. I cannot step away from this thing! I watch all my movies on here, netflix, blu ray or otherwise, I listen to my music from it, and I use it to do all of my homework and connect to everyone using whatever social media I feel like using that week.

All in all, very satisfied with this product and would highly recommend it to anyone debating a purchase of their own. If it fits your needs and has a lot of features you want, go with your gut like I did, and get yourself one!

We purchased this laptop here on Amazon just before Black Friday 2009. We paid $309 even though it was $249 at Best Buy the following week. After getting it home and realizing the single core Celeron 900 was an absolute dog of a processor, I went on eBay and bid $41.66 for a Pentium dual-core T4300 processor. I installed that and bumped the memory up to 3GB from 2GB using a PC2-5300 chip I had available from another machine. PC2-6400 memory can be used but it does increase temperatures inside the laptop. To put it simply, the computer now flies. Video is clean, clear, and stutter-free. It does not hang at times during booting. It does not freeze or lock up when multitasking. I use it as my primary computer and it blows away every desktop I've owned in the past few years. To be honest, I don't use it as a laptop, but as a desktop. I use an ASUS 23.6" LCD monitor (full 1080p video on a VGA connection), Logitech optical mouse and USB speakers, Kensington Keyboard For Life, and I just stick the laptop in my keyboard tray, put my external keyboard on the desk itself, and it's perfect.

This laptop can game. The Intel HD graphics (X4500MHD) is on-board, but it is THE BEST on-board graphics set you can get today. The performance is comparable to any of the following modern PCI Express cards:

ATI Radeon HD 4550

ATI Radeon HD 5450

nVidia 9400GT

nVidia 9500GS

nVidia 9500GT

nVidia GT120

It delivers close to 8600GT performance as well. I couldn't be happier with this laptop-as-a-desktop.

The computer having 3 USB ports is a slight problem, but a 4-in-1 USB hub solved that. I now have all ports in use and one free plug on the hub for flash drives, camera docks, printers, and other such temporary connections. It does not have a webcam (I use an external model) and it has no card reader (I have a microSD adapter and will be getting a full-size SD to USB adapter soon, but worst case, I can plug an SD card into my Kodak camera and unload it from there using my camera dock). The laptop's case appears to support these upgrades and other models of Extensa (5630 for example) do have these options. But a deep research into the computer's service manual shows that the card reader cannot be added to this motherboard.

Other processors that do absolutely for a fact work with this motherboard, chipset, and BIOS include:

Stock Celeron 900 (2.2GHz)

Celeron dual-core T3000

Celeron dual-core T3100

Pentium dual-core T4200

Pentium dual-core T4300

The T3200, T4400, and T4500 should also work fine as they are in the same processor family (Penryn-3M standard voltage, socket P) they are just newer models than when this GL40 chipset was introduced.

The T4300 does not have a noticeable heat increase over the Celeron 900, a degree or two hotter at idle, but identical under load. A T4500 might see another degree here or there. Other chips like Core 2 Duos may work in theory but may run hotter. These include T6400, T6500, T6600, T6570, T6670, T8100, T8300, and some later T9300/T9500 steppings,

Do NOT discount this computer, or any other cheap laptop with the GL40 chipset, for having a single core Celeron in it. These dual-core Celerons and Pentiums can be bought for $50 or less and provide a much needed kick in the rear as far as performance in daily use. The third GB of RAM just provides an extra cushion against slow operating when you're really busy. A $300 or $400 laptop with a $50 processor and $50 in RAM upgrades is now equal to a $700 model. Anyone who bought one of these at Best Buy for $249 just gets to do it cheaper than the rest of us.

Quick summary First PC I got had problems. Did get another one and it seems to be fine so far. I have left the review below since it is an honest account of what I went through with the first one.

I have been buying PCs since the early 1980s and this is BY FAR the WORST out of box experience I have had. The PC had 5 hours of critical updates from HP and Microsoft that did not go through correctly. 18 hours later still getting errors on the PC, from HP and Windows. I have called HP customer support three times so far, have reformatted PC with customer support on the line and still am having problems.

The HP support has been horrific. The HP support is from India and once you get to a live person the support is subpar. My main HP tech support person was down right rude and HE TOLD ME THE FOLLOWING THINGS which were horrific to hear from an IT guy (and totally false by the way):

(1) do not to make Windows critical updates since they cause problems on the HP PCs

(2) HP simple pass which is an advertised security feature did not work well

(3) I should ignore all the red ! and yellow warning triangles on my pc

He basically just wanted me off the line and to live with a problem PC! The support person also had me install some software from him that hijacked internet explore and had my computer go nuts with virus warnings and I got several viruses too!..this is when I agreed to reformat my PC...the India HP tech had limited knowledge of the PC itself and refused to answer any questions on Windows 8 even when we were sitting on the phone waiting for the computer to reboot or do updates.

After reformatting the hard drive and another 5 hours of doing HP and windows updates I am still getting errors. I had already installed my last copy of MS office on this pc and am very upset at the prospect of having to buy another copy of Office out of my pocket. Ship this PC back and go out and purchase another PC. So far I have been on the phone with HP for 14 hours. HP support is the worse... My HP support person also made me deactivate a lot of the Windows 8 features on the second installation and when I protested he told me he would not support any Windows issues and I could turn them on later. When the updates were done I asked how to turn on those Windows 8 features and he told me he didn't know and that wasn't his job.

UPDATE...escalating with HP support...now they are telling me that since this 8AM Saturday they cannot do anything till Monday and they will have someone call me back then to help me return my PC and get a new one then. This is unacceptable to me because this means 2 more days without a PC than if I was helped now.

UPDATE (2 hours later) still escalating.... Now HP is telling me to pack the PC up, drive to fed ex and once they have the PC back (I purchased this from HP directly) they will ship another one to me AND then I need to either call Microsoft and ask them if they can transfer my license to a new PC OR I need to buy another copy of Microsoft office. This means I won't have a new PC for 5 + days and then I need to start the installation procedure all over again.

UPDATE (3 hours later) packing up my PC. Fedex will pick up package Monday and I will get new PC Wed. Hope this one works!

Seriously???? That much escalation to get OK service???? Looks like it will take a week to resolve the issue and get a new PC. That is a lot of down time and a lot of non productive time for me to fix their problem.

From what I saw of the PC when it was working..

1) the sound system is nice...clear and loud enough to play music on without external speakers. I played some support videos online and had the sound on one of the lowest settings and it was plenty loud. Played a few songs and the sound quality is better than any other PC I have had.

2) The webcam was also HD and the quality was nice.

3) I think I will like Windows 8 once I get used to it. There is a learning curve on this but it has some nice features.

4) Have talked to several friends who have HP and they told me their HP assist never worked well and constantly has problems with updates.

5) This is my first HP...may be my last...their PCs may be OK but their customer support is HORRIBLE!

Update:

Got the new replacement PC Wed (yesterday). Software updates process of HP and MS software took 4+ hours but went smoothly. The installation of my other programs was pain free. Still installing my files but all seems well. Still very impressed with the sound system on the PC and know I will be enjoying that once my mp3s are installed.

HP support group called me and sent me an email Monday AM and gave me a case # and a direct number to contact them if I have any more troubles. They were very nice and made me feel that my problem was a fluke and I now had good support if it wasn't. Right now it looks like their was a glitch in the software update of my first PC which threw off everything. The second issue was that I got a bad tech from their Indian support group he needs some more training on both customer service and the PC. The final issue for me is that by the time I started escalating it was Saturday morning and the US support was closed at that time.

What I should have done was to send back my first PC the second the issues started and got a new PC and escalated with HP about the fact that I had already installed MS office on the bad PC.

Update one month later:

HP contacted me several times to make sure I was happy which I thought was very nice. These calls came from someone in the US and not India. Thank goodness... I may get another HP after all. The PC is working fine. Am enjoying the sound system (which is very good for a laptop sound system) and windows 8. No other issues.

I can't resist writing a very pre-emptive review because I have great feeling about this PC. First of all, I had a Lenovo core i7 ideapad crap out after just 18 months since manufacture. The 2630QM processor was a bit consumptive and I am absolutely paranoid the chipset may have had a bit of a ticking timebomb in its workings. While I respect Lenovo's ThinkPad brand, clearly there are some to be avoided or scrutinized in the lower tiers.

So in the market was I, and after researching my target price range I had decided on the AMD A8 or AMD A-10 line, if I was lucky. After all, I have some esteem for the AMD products as I find them to function better than the sum of their parts. Plus, I could also blame Intel in large part for my prior PC woes in the chipset vicinity. The HP Envy Dv6 with AMD A8-4500M was quite compelling in my search for products, but I had my reservations not finding the A-10 version. I shopped a lot online but didn't buy.. still waiting for the right deal.

So off I went for some family time, but on my way I happened to pass a Staples and couldn't resist stopping in to see if anything called me. Well, in fact, they have some phenomenal deals and no-nonsense powerful PCs. Indeed they had the dv6 Envy A8-4500M model which I tried extensively. However their best deal was a $500 core i5 Envy at $150 cheaper.

Needless to say I was forced to buy Intel again, but I can't regret it much. The computer is blazing fast. However what I really want to emphasize in this review is the excellent build quality. The mostly aluminum case is rigid and the chicklet keys have a fantastic feel. The cooling fan pushes out nothing but cold air and the Beats Speakers are definitely a bump up in laptop speaker output. Trackpad seems like great quality also.

There is one MAJOR drawback ... the screen viewing angles are weak with dark tones, and the resolution is .. by todays standards.. quite BLAH or even BLEH. However with brighter tones (like this web page) the angles are quite good. And it is blindingly bright. Connectivity excellent w Bluetooth and USB 3,0.

Overall, the intel internals are nothing to scoff at. However, there is NO reason not to strongly consider the dv6-7210us which is quite a competent overall system which is capable of a higher windows experience index number with a few small modifications (this PC will be GPU restricted for a lower overall score). So this review is mainly to APPLAUD hp for doing what other PC manufactures haven't done basically ever: make a computer with a good CPU near the top of the line (AMD A8 also) in an excellent form factor with no major bottlenecks in quality anywhere. Ok, the screen isn't amazing, but everything has it's price and as the one factor I can see separating this from a $2200 mac pro, I could care less. I can still give a 5*.

Also, Bravo! to Staples for carrying far better PC's than any other big box retailer I've come across (best buy, walmart and friends, Costco). Almost all of their PCs were desirable and they even had the blazing fast Core i7 Toshiba for $630 all holiday season!

It took a brutal bludgeoning of market share by Mac and tablets, and a massive blow to share price, but on a price to performance AND build quality ratio this machine is something you've been waiting for.

I had an awful experience when I first purchased the computer. It came with corrupted files. There was an icon on it to fix the problem. I made the mistake of following the instructions and wound up buying a service contract to repair the computer. I know Amazon will take back the computer with no questions but by the time I realized that it was too late. I wasted over $250 because of my own stupidity. A couple of days later Amazon reminded me that I had 15 days to send the computer back. I did so and got a replacement. I am generally pleased with the the dv6-722us. I had the same computer with Windows 7. My wife loved it so I gave it to her and bought the new one with Windows 8. To me the Windows 8 operating system is not an improvement. It takes a little getting used to but it is not difficult to learn. Overall this has been a good purchase. If I had not had the terrible experience with the first computer it would been an excellent purchase. Word to the wise, if it doesn't look right to begin with, put it back in the box immediately and send it back.

Have had 2 computers shipped and both had mechanical defects, one of which the mouse button did not work and the other a problem with garbled speakers. Trying one more time...obviously not much quality control going on at hp these days..

Gateway MT6705 Dual-Core 1.6GHz 1GB 120GB DVD±RW 15.4-Inchwith Windows Vista

I bought a demo unit of this machine in 2007 from an Office Depot, and reinstalled from disc (any legitimate MT6705 -even demo models -came with discs, unlike that of one of the reviewers, apparently).

It has worked flawlessly ever since, other than things I dislike about Vista (had to do serious workarounds to install software that was safe and secure and updated -so there was no reason to use multiple measures to prevent it -but whose developers had not paid a royalty to Microsoft. If you use exclusively software desired my Microsoft, it will install like a dream)

The screen is bright and beautiful, the machine runs fast (probably helped by my adding RAM to arrive at its 2Gig maximum), and I get decent battery life for a machine this size.

In my case, I do not keep the screen at full brightness in order to save power and heat, but it still looks very nice. I use it primarily for Internet access, running programs (C, java, etc.), using the webcam, making CDs.

The only problem I ever had with it is that in its initial configuration, it would yank down the wireless card when you unplugged the unit's power source, and to get it back you have to use hotkeys Fn-F2 (using control panel's networking commands to try to enable/disable wireless did NOT get it working, only the hotkeys did -had to have a friend look them up for me on his computer since I couldn't get online to find out for myself;-) I believe that configuring "power options" in the control panel was what solved this for me.

I have not had the power supply problems. Perhaps my electric supplier has a more clean, regulated power supply, or perhaps it really did help that I have always had it plugged into an APC surge protector instead of directly into a wall outlet.

In 2011 I am still using it.

We bought a Gateway and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but a Gateway.

After loading Microsoft Office Professional 2010 + Microsoft Security Essentials I began receiving messages from Microsoft that the version of Windows 7 was not authentic and that Security Essentials would shut down in 30 days in addition to automatic updates all failing. A little phrase above the time on the lower right of the screen appeared and stayed there: "not an authentic version of Windows 7". Since I had already loaded MS office professional 2010(a very expensive program)I was forced to buy an authentic version of Windows 7-and load the authentic product keyBRINGING THE TOTAL COST TO WELL OVER $400.

Over a month later this PC is full of qwirks.

DONT BUY FROM DISHONEST SELLERS LIKE THESE PEOPLE

COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE SELLER REVEALED THAT HE IS BARELY LITERATE.

The Amazon claim process is 99.9% automated and individual issues are not well addressed.

I would not want to return a pc after I loaded MS office and was forced to buy an authentic version of Windows 7. That would be returning a much more valuable product than the one I bought.

I requested a refund for the authentic version of Windows 7. The automated return process is not set up for specific requests and only offered a return.

ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH IT!!!!

This laptop in an incredible machine for the price that I paid. As listing all of the pro's of this laptop would take a lot longer than listing the cons, lets just skip to the bad stuff. It's a black laptop, so the grease on your fingers is visible on it. A previous review stated that the left click on the touchpad was too loud. I agree completely. If you're going to play Cookie Clicker in church, people will look at you funny. Other than that, there have been no downsides whatsoever. The onboard chipset runs all of the games that I play at acceptable framerates (Dota 2 on low runs at about 45fps steadily). I multi-task, browse the internet, play games, write reports, draw up spreadsheets, all at the same time. No slowdown, no nonsense. I would definitely recommend this laptop, and in fact I already have.

I bought this for $349 on Amazon with free shipping. I buy computers based on components rather than brand. This computer has an I3 processor that is significantly faster than the usual processor at this price level. The 4GB of RAM is more than adequate. The main complaint I have with the computer is Windows 8 and the way Dell has scattered stuff across multiple partitions. Windows 8 can be improved by downloading something called "Classic Shell" (find the website by Googling) that gives you a standard "Start Menu" reminiscent of XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

Another issue, for those who buy Windows computers to dual boot them with Linux is that the UEFI (standard on newer Windows computers) makes this more difficult. I was able to install Ubuntu 13.04 after defragmenting, then shrinking the main C: partition within Windows using Disk Manager, then running the Ubuntu install disk using Legacy mode in the Bios. To get to Legacy mode, you have to press F8 as the computer starts to boot, then searching through the fields until you can enable it. Then, when the computer reboots, you have to press F12 to allow booting from the 13.04 DVD (13.04 install disk takes up 800MB--more than most CD's). I then had to use "Boot Repair," a Lubuntu based application downloadable and burned to a CD from the Ubuntu website. A warning to Ubuntu users: 12.04 did not support either wired or wireless internet with this computer. I have not tried wired with 13.04 as wireless worked well. Now that Ubuntu is installed alongside Windows, I can go to my usual practice of using Windows only to back up my IPOD.

My Dell Inspiron 15 N5040 included 3gb of RAM and i3-2.53ghz cpu. I do intend to upgrade the RAM to 8GB but will be adding that separately. Dell's pricing on memory upgrades is absurd. so I just ordered 2x4GB (8GB) of Crucial memory on Amazon for $40. Installing them just involves lifting the keyboard out.

For what most people do with their computers in the average day, this laptop is perfect. A lot of people think they need the fastest, newest, most expensive computer out there and nowadays, that doesn't have to be the case. Most of us aren't graphic designers or movie editors, so why spend hundreds more? For web browsing, email, skype calling, watching netflix, photo editing, and even movie editing (better with 8GB memory), I have had no issues at all.

It's a bit plain looking aesthetically, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Compared to the DELL XPS 15z, which I also own, it's only slightly thicker, which I found surprising since Dell has been touting how thin the XPS 15z is. It does have an off center mousepad which I found annoying since I'm used to them being centered. I found myself inadvertently hitting the right button when reaching for the left button. That is just a minor issue though. Another down side is the battery life. The standard battery doesn't last too long so keep the charger handy and stay near power outlets. I've been getting about 3 hours of battery life while web browsing.

I would recommend this to product to anyone looking for an affordable everyday laptop.

I don't know if it is safe to say this laptop's keys sort of resemble and feel like a mac's keyboard.

anyways...

The keys are a plus.

Nice screen colors due to the default intel hd graphics.

it is a lightweight machine sort of feels like it to me.

for $400-$470 it is a hell of a bargain,it does its job.

Cons: I haven't seen any at all.

Highly Recommend.

Enjoy. Dell For The Win.

I've been a Dell fan for quite some time, and as expected, this little gem confirms why. Repeatable performance and Dell dependability in a sleek, easy to manage package. The price point for comparable units makes this purchase a true bargain, coupled with Amazon ease of ordering and confidence in the Amazon market place partners makes it that much more enjoyable. The seller, J-Tech Digital, was spot on perfect, caught a shipping error on my part and notified me by email soon after the order was placed. The J-Tech Digital Customer Service Team corrected my oversight, shipped it ULTRA FAST and took the time to follow up after the sale. Other retailers could learn a thing or two here. Very impressive indeed.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron 15 i15-N5040 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

This is a good basic laptop. It has a lot of potential if you upgrade the ram memory.

PROS:

+ Got it brand new for under 500 US$.

+ Intel core i3 is a really good microprocesor.

+ DDR3 memory support up to 8GB of ram.

+ Works well in high temperatures and it does not overheat like HP laptop's.

CONS:

Touchpad sucks.

Only comes with 3GB of ram out of the box.

Neutral:

~ The keyboard is very basic.

~ Screen is ok (it's advertised as a LED screen but i can't see the difference between this and a normal 2008 LCD screen).

I'm happy with this product, but i'll definitely buy a memory upgrade to enhance the performance..

I have no complaints, although making the recovery discs didnt go well. Went thru 4 dvd's and then got a "failure" on the 4th disc. Called Dell support and the tech said this is a known problem and he said to use a 8GB flash drive. Sorry all mine are 4 or 6GB and i'm not going to go and spend money on a 8GB fd just to make up a backup Recovery.

Battery life could be better, only get about 4 hours out of it on the basic mode...

Over all this laptop is worth the money, it is fast and so far works great.

I purchased this computer from a big box store at a price point lower than is being offered here, so I will base my review on the lower price point. If I had paid the full retail that is listed here, I may have a different take on this computer...

First off, this computer is not a powerhouse. It is however substantially faster than My old computer (an original hp mini 1030nr) First off, I am nothing but impressed with the video playback of this computer. HD youtube videos play with no loss of frames, as do local hd videos (please note that this is a new cpu and hardware video acceleration is some what limited at this time, to make full use of hardware decoding you have to use windows media player or media player classic VLC does not play nice yet) The screen is bright and crisp, and it is a decent resolution (1366x768) The back light is even across the screen and overall the picture quality is excellent. The build quality of the whole laptop is good. This does not feel like a cheep budget laptop. The processor may not be great, however, it is perfectly suited for most daily tasks. Being a duel core processor, it is up to the task of multitasking. I have yet to bog it down, though I have honestly not pushed it yet. None the less, It handles an instant messenger, music, video, and the internet all at once with out missing a beat. Another nice thing about this computer is that unlike most similarly priced computers (mostly netbooks) this computer has a built in 8x dvd burner.

Now for some things I do not like about this laptop. First on my list is the lack of USB ports. Seriously Toshiba, only 2 usb port? This is 2011 not 1998! Another point of contention is the horrible mess of crap that comes pre-installed on this computer. Shame on you again Toshiba :( It took about 2 hours to remove all the bloatware on this computer. Yet another thing that bothers me is the flaky on screen display for the fn keys. It works about 50% of the time. Lastly, the cpu is a major bottle neck for the video card in this laptop. If paired with a faster processor, this laptop would be much much faster, and capable of moderate gaming. I get the feeling that the c-50 processor/gpu combo is intentionally crippled so as not to compete with amd's other offerings. I can only hope that the overclockers figure out how to unlock this cpu.

Overall this is a well made computer, and I would recommend it for some one who is looking for a budget computer that is capable of a full web experience including streaming hd video content. It is also more than up to the challenge of most computing except for gaming (though it will play older games often on high settings. I would also not want to use this computer for video editing or other cpu intensive applications. At nearly four hundred dollars, I feel you could do better, but at three fifty (the price I payed at a box store) you cant go wrong.

I have had this laptop for a few weeks now, it was easy to order and was shipped very quickly! I only needed something to get access to the internet, watch movies & listen to music and this laptop handles that well my only grumble is the speaker volume, when everything is turned right up it is still fairly quiet especially for watching movies with more than one or two people. All up a great buy & has done everything I need with ease!

I previously had a Toshiba. After several years, it finally died. With newer technology available I did a lot of comparison shopping before making a new purchase. Even with looking at more expensive laptops, I still came back to Toshiba. It is definitely a great value.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5230 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I ordered this laptop cause i needed it for downloading movies, music, pictures etc, emails & skype & web surfing etc. the cover is a fingerprint magnet but i could care less, the keyboard is fullsize, it has built in mic & cam, it has a touchpad it plays dvds. its just good for a regular joe, for a computer guru this may not be for them because they most likely go for expensive brands such as a mac but this toshiba laptop does everything you need it to do & my wireless mouse works great with it but i use the touchpad anyway. great for the price & if you wanna save big bucks but still have an excellent laptop then this is for you but if you wanna spend a whole lot of money then it's up to you.

Nothing fancy at all but it gets what you need done and for the price tht your paying you really cant complain. I would reccomend this to anyone who needs to do a bit of school work online and some basic web surfing. I havent used any of the video editing software and I doubt I ever will but I do however, get online and use mostly wireless connections. It picks up my wifi signals almost immediately and there have been times where other ppl cant get online but somehow Im still able to. Im currently deployed to iraq and it takes a pretty good beating and still boots up no problem. I wouldnt say its indestructable but I do bang it around sometimes and take it from one place to another in my assult pack and it still never lets me down. The down side to owning this pc is definetly the poor audio speakers but since I almost always use headphones bc I have a roomate so it really doesnt matter to me. Be sure to take out the time to remove all the crap tht comes with toshiba from the memory, I honestly dont understand why it comes with so much junk but alot of it isnt needed I love music so any free memory I can spare is a must for me. I went out and got myself an external to DL bigger files and to back up the system but Im still kinda greedy....lol. If you're greedy too then please do remove the bloatware. Overall not a bad piece of equipment, its a bargain and I dont regret buying it :)

For the price, it has everything you'd expect and functions well, including the touchscreen which was something of a pre-purchase concern for me. Small issue was that it shipped with a noticable gap between the top of the screen and the "lid" of the laptop that's annoying (seems like the plastic clips used to attach the screen's bezel to the "lid" are weak, and there's no adhesive).

Here's the BIG BUT....

The freaking trackpad is super sensitive and placed (and designed) in such a way as to constantly be touched during typing on the physical keyboard. The way I place my palms means the base of my thumbs is regularly contacting the trackpad and makes typing quite an ordeal. Literally I've had my cursor skip three times now just writing this review. My annoyance level with this during my first week of ownership is quickly moving towards "problem which makes me wish I bought another laptop" territory. I've never had this problem with a laptop before, and it seems the issue is that there the trackpad is quite large in area compared to other laptops I've owned, and also its barely recessed in from the area surrounding it. Also, there's no tactile difference between the trackpad and the surrounding area of the laptop so its impossible to tell by feel when the pad of your thumb is touching the trackpad.

In conclusion, this one issue makes the overall functionality of this laptop pretty poor, and is forcing me to be conscious of my hand placement in a way I've never had to deal with or think about before. It makes quick typing in a "non-desk" situation i.e. when I'm in my comfy chair with the laptop in my lap, really, really annoying. Small design flaw that affects user, well, any time you're using physical keyboard. This is my third Lenovo, and while I'm still a fan of the brand I wish I hadn't gotten this particular model due to this issue. Gah, now fourth time.

I have a 6 GB version of the laptop and it rocks. The start up and shut down is really fast. The touch screen is great with Edge to edge glass screen that's easy to use with touch feature.. The screen is sharp and crisp but wish the resolution was little higher for a 15 inch laptop. The laptop is super quiet and don't have any heating problem in normal use. The palm rest is very comfortable for long use. Sound is not spectacular but more than adequate for everyday use. Even the refurbished model comes with full 1 year warranty. You cant go wrong with this laptop.

If you are looking for the ultra small form factor of a Netbook but would prefer not to have the ultra slow performance then the x100e is a choice you should consider. This is a true ThinkPad, complete with a fullsize keyboard and 1 yr return to depot warranty, not 90days like most consumer laptops. This model also includes a 3G WWAN card internally so if you were looking to get wirelss carrier access from AT&T you never have to search for a hotspot again, this gets you wireless access anywhere you have cell phone coverage. It also includes traditional WiFI 802.11 for wireless access at home or when you have a hotspot. The Athlon NEO MV-40 processor is more than adequate for everyday computing and then some. It also comes complete with a generous 250gb HD and 2gb of RAM not to mention WIN7 Professional. You do sacrifice an optical drive for ultra slim but if you were looking in the Netbook category these do not include an optical drive either. All in all a lot of Notebook at a reasonable price. The 35082AU nomally lists for $649 because of the GOBI 3G wireless. This add has the wrong MSRP listed so the discount is substantial. These won't be around for long at this price once this is discovered.

This is a good laptop to take on trips or the coffee shop. Its fast and great for internet usage. The only problem is that it really heats up and the fan just doesn't cut it. I've had this laptop for 18 months without a single problem, battery is still working for 3-4 hours just like when it was new. Not a bad laptop for $250 $300 purchase. Good luck

This has been very helpful and very convenient. Lenovo has a better built PC. After 3yrs. using a Samsung netbook and having to replace it with this X100e I am finding the support software for the Windows 7 has really been very smooth and very helpful in overcoming simple problems like trying to connect to the internet in strange areas, overcoming others.

I got this laptop for free, which certainly taught me a lesson (that free things are hardly ever any good). It's got its good sides an excellent keyboard, a good matte screen, it's got good weight and all. Unfortunately, it's practically unusable. The system just freezes from time to time, and this with just the web browser loaded. Also, the tiny laptop gets really hot a real 'lapburner' this one. Finally, my battery is failing right now when I got it, the 3-cell would work for about an hour, now we're down to 15 mins, so the battery is, essentially, dead.

To sum up, I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone. Yeah it's usable but you can't get much done on it. Google to learn more about its battery issues.

All I have to say is that I bought this laptop also from Best Buy and I LOVE it. As an IT guy with nearly 10 years of experience, this little guy is well worth the investment. What I like most are the keys. I normally type 60+ wpm but the way that the keys are designed, it seems like its 70+. Very ergonomic. Battery life is great and with the amount of RAM the performance is exceptional. Very slick look! Highly recommended.

The price was so right! I bought this computer recently and it is a work horse, I love all of the things it can do. My problem is the design of the screen, it cannot open all the way which drives me nuts. The screen stands vertical, not good. Frequent pushing on the screen will damage the machine eventually, other laptops that I own, open like a book, not this one, it barely opens half way. Other than that it would have been just what I needed so I'm returning it.

i purchased this from best buy back in may 2009, it's nothing special but if you need a laptop that will do its job, this is one i'd recommend. it's just hard to keep it clean since the keyboard is of a glossy finish. i use it daily and definitely enjoy it!

Honest reviews on Toshiba M305-S4910 14.1-Inch Widescreen Satellite Laptop

Purchased a refurbished one last year. and after a couple months, it is slow to a halt even when you just do some simple web surfing. It basically became totally unusable. Anyway, lesson learned. wont buy another refurbished laptop for the rest of my life.

Bought two of these at the same time. Didn't move them around much; his was mostly used to read the newspaper in the morning, check email, and watch an occasional movie, and mine was used to check email and fiddle around with Photoshop here and there. We also both use Skype once in awhile; the camera quality wasn't good, but it did the job. Both worked well for awhile the keyboard is easy to type on, the harmon/kardon speakers are a nice touch, and no complaints in general. Just over a year in, his camera stopped working; technical support said they couldn't do anything about it and were generally unhelpful. About a year and a half in, my computer's screen started flickering/flashing once every ten seconds or so. If turned off for a day or two, it would be fine again for awhile. Again, technical support was completely unhelpful. But this is the reason I would not buy a Toshiba product again: my power cord died two weeks ago, and his died one week ago. They died within a week of each other! We have no pets who could chew wires, don't move the laptops around much, and shut the power on the power strip at night / when we're not around. I called Toshiba's technical AND customer support and asked if they would replace these, as they seem to be lemons. Both were polite enough, but refused to help in any way, and could not offer anythingno replacements, no discounts, nothing. I will absolutely not shell out $140 for two new power cords when these two died after two years; my last power cord lasted almost seven years. I know generic replacements are available for pretty cheap, but it was more the principle that incensed me. So much for standing behind your products. I would not recommend the laptops and would not recommend Toshiba products unless you buy with the knowledge that you are on your own once your warranty expires.
