This is an update to my review. I loved this item for the first few days but then the screen went black and I could not get it to come up for anything. I don't know if this is a problem with Acer or not but this happened on my older computer also which was an Acer. So now I have to delete everything on this so that I can return it. A huge pain in the rear. If it happens again I will have to buy a different model and will speak my mind about Acer. I also do not like the new Windows 8. It is diffiult to figure out where everything is but I'm sure after working with it for awhile it will become easier. Everything new is hard at first.

I just received this yesterday. It was so easy to set up and I am cruising around on it like crazy. My other computer constantly froze and shut down plus the screen didn't work so I had to have a monitor on the side so this one is amazing. I love having a number key on the side and also on the top. It does not get warm at all I love it.

Bought this to replace my Mom's desktop computer. My only complaint is Windows 8. Not a fan of Windows to begin with but 8 is a real loser in my opinion and it is very different from the former versions of Windows so it was confusing. With some modifications, I was able to make the desktop similar enough to her old computer that she was comfortable with it.

As for the computer itself, it is wonderful. Plenty of processor and RAM for just about any need. Be aware that it does have the trackpad offset to the left due to having a full numbers keypad on the right. This makes typing a bit awkward for anyone who is used to having the trackpad centered. But since Mom had never used a laptop, she didn't know the difference. I was the one who struggled.

I have purchased 4 Acers in the past 6 years. I have never had a problem other than one was damaged in transit, obviously no fault on Acers part. I still have all 4 and have never had a problem with any of them. I have had HPs/Dells in the past and none of those have ever survived longer than a year and half.

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire E1-571-6811 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Black)

The Acer Aspire E1-571-6811 15.6-Inch Laptop is fairly light weight, loaded with Windows 8, and grants free access to the Acer iCloud.

Many of the other pre-loaded programs are interesting and convenient, e.g. the news feed. Some are a little confusing to figure out, e.g., the Camera (specifically where the folder is with the pics I've just taken. The folder is, of course, in the Pictures under Library, but the subfolders are by date, which can be a bit confusing when there are a lot of subfolders, and the dates all begin with the year, then the month, then the day).

The Right click sometimes doesn't respond when clicked initially, but may take a couple of pushes to respond. This bothers me greatly. But since I bought the computer online, I'm not about to send it away for diagnosing and repairs when it only gives me trouble intermittently.

The quality and speed is so much better than my old windows XP that I love it. Coming from XP, windows 8 has areas that I find very difficult. But, in time I hope I am able to master it.

Ultrabook manufactures are scratching their perverbial heads asking the consumers why they are not buying up the new Ultrabooks that are suppose to be the latest computing craze today? Simple. Pricing is way too high!! Their marketing teams evidently don't know how to do math and their research teams don't know what 'latest generation hardware' means. In this particular example, the ASUS ZENBOOK UX31E-XH71 is way overpriced and underpowered for having such an exhorbant sticker price. $1199 for what?? This model does NOT have dedicated graphics, comes with an out-of-date older 2nd generation Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU and only a 128GB SSD? How about put an 2nd generation Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge quad core CPU in there (3610QM or 3740QM), put dedicated graphics in there (Nvidia GT650M), and a 256GB SSD. Then I would pay $1199 for it.

NUFF SAID! If you are looking for the best bang for your hard earned money, DO NOT BUY AN ULTRABOOK AT RETAIL PRICES!! Wait for Black Friday to roll around, and then pay $300-$500 less for the same notebook (as equipped in this amazon listing)...which is about what they are really worth anyway.

I travel once or twice a month and was looking for a very light computer to replace the netbook I had that was too small to do useful work on while away from the office. This was the lightest computer I could find anywhere, and is packed with enough speed for my business needs.

I bought this Toshiba Portege Z935-P390 based on one of the reviews I read on Amazon, and received it right before a 4-day business trip. It's been excellent so far, and here is why:

Pros -The 13.3" screen is big enough for me to see, edit and create documents productively. It is also VERY light -about 2.4 pounds according to the product literature, although I haven't weighed it. My Toshiba arrived with Windows 8 pre-installed. The keyboard lights up, which is an excellent feature if you travel at all by plane or wish to use it in low light. It also has an easy-to-find energy-save button that will power down the computer when it's not in use. Also, it has an HDMI outlet and once I got home was able to stream a movie from Amazon prime right onto the TV ... pretty cool!

Cons -Windows 8, for me, is confusing and contains a lot that I would never use. As well, there is almost no printed documentation, and I found it pretty hard to find the online help -in fact, the brief explanation in the QuickStart guide did not seem to correspond correctly to where important help information is available on the computer. Finally, this computer does not have a CD/DVD drive, although when I bought it I was aware that there were some easy-to-buy options for that.

I have been loyal to DELL for twenty years and bought only Dell computers for home and business. All my Dell computers and laptops have for the most part been very good. But upon looking for a new laptop, I wanted to go away from my Inspiron 1705 which weighs 6 to 7 pounds to something much smaller. I considered and looked at converting over to a Mac or a ultrabook or tablet. I looked at hundreds of Macs, ultrabooks, laptops, and tablets. At the end of the day, I thought most about what I wanted which is 1) a light weight product so when I went to meetings, presentations, and plane travel, it was light and 2) something that booted up FAST...under 10 seconds and wake up time of a few seconds or less and 3) reliable and 4) solid state drive and 5) ideally NOT Windows 8. As I did my research, I gave strong consideration to the small Apple Macs with solid state drives and only decided against them because of my own fear of learning new ways and having to run simultaneous parallels on the Mac to support applications I use that don't run on Mac. So I decided to stay with PC and focused my attention on which PC would meet my goals. After literally looking at hundreds of laptops, notebooks, ultrabooks, and tablets, my research and reviews by others helped me decide on the Toshiba Portege Z935.

Pros:

1) Super light and only weights with battery under 2.5 pounds

2) Super fast boot up time...due to Solid State drive helps immensely

3) back lit keyboard

4) (2) 2.0 usb ports, (1) 3.0 usb fast port, HDMI, camera and mic, and so much more

5) great screen picture quality

6) I love the Solid State Drive

Cons:

1) Other than Quick Start set up guide, no printed manual to tell you such things as keyboard functions....I still have no idea two weeks later how to put the laptop in sleep mode...I have no idea what the function keys do...I have no idea what the lights on and off mean....very little documentation....if this is read by Toshiba, please tell me where to get this information.

2) Internet load times on all of my browsers is slower than my old Dell..not sure what is causing this...but definitely not as fast and takes longer for pages to show all content.

3) Comes with Windows 8 ONLY and no option to get Windows 7 or XP etc. I had Windows XP and again, it comes with Windows 8 and NO DOCUMENTATION for the laptop, keyboard buttons, and nothing about how to use Windows 8. And yes, Windows 8 is very different. The good news is that if you use an Android smartphone..in my case, I have a Galaxy III, the learning curve is easier because it's a lot like my smart phone. BUT MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT IS NO DOCUMENTATION....I invested dozens of hours troubleshooting and figuring everything out with no manual or documentation....come on Toshiba and Microsoft, can't you afford to put a manual in the box?

4) Because this ultrabook ONLY comes with Windows 8, you have to upgrade all of your Microsoft software. In my case, I had XP versions of Microsoft Office. Can't use this so you have to upgrade to newest version...upgrade wasn't to bad...for Excel, Word, and Powerpoint 2010, $107 or $127 for two computers. The cost upgrade wasn't such a big deal for me, it was that fact that I had to migrate from 2003 excel, word, etc to 2010. That change is almost as extreme as changing from XP to Windows 8.

5) No SD card input...I rectified this by using a USB 7 in 1 adapter so I plug my SD cards into the USB and plug it in.

6) Only has 128 GB Solid State Drive...recommend buying same laptop but with 256 GB drive or bigger if available. 128 GB is tiny and requires me to keep nearly all of my music, videos, etc, on an external drive.

Should you buy this or any product with Windows 8, know that the setup process takes you down a road where everything becomes integrated into Microsoft platforms including email, calendar etc. THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD KNOW IS TO INSTALL YOUR FAVORITE BROWSER...IN MY CASE, FIREFOX. Doing so enables me to use my Google Gmail just like I'm used to. If you don't, your Gmail works in Microsoft 8 but it looks and feels different and you can't access what you are used to. Once I installed Firefox (Mozilla) and Chrome, I opened my Gmail and did my Internet browsing like I used to.

Overall, I love the laptop now that I have invested dozens of hours setting it up. I would love to know how to use the function keys and turn on sleep mode. Through trial and error, I have learned how to use Windows 8 and frankly, I like it. It operate so much like my smart phone. BUT WINDOWS 8 IS SO RADICALLY DIFFERENT, you need to be prepared for this huge change which may cause you to hate your new Toshiba Portege when in fact, your ultrabook is awesome...it's just Windows 8 that you may hate..or in my case after much heartache, now I really like it and the laptop.

I have been using the earlier i3 model for several months. It was a bit lower cost and only came with 4 gig memory and windows 7. You will really like the way the models with solid state drive boot up or wake up so fast. And they take bumps and movement much better. I love the back-lit keyboard which lights up as soon as you press a key and goes out a bit after you leave the keyboard. But the best feature is the size and weight. The unit is extreemly light and nearly as thin as an i-pad. I see people doing OK with those on planes but this keyboard is much faster for me. And the overall size is great in a tight airplane seat. My 17 inch HP was laughable when I used it and one time when the passenger in front tilted his seat back the top of the tall 17 inch screen caught on the tray latch and nearly split. This Toshiba has been a dream by comparison when flying. On the road the Toshiba does well connecting to local wifi or the G4 hot spot I carry with my laptops. Around the house it does well with my Clear whole house g4 router for internet surfing, movies and e-mail. It is so easy to use anywhere, kitchen, living room, out on patio.... wireless is the way to go. I can also connect it to the TV for photo shows or movies, my own or downloaded, without needing a smart TV or rocu box. The video driver has been good for what I do but I can't say much about high framerate gaming because I dont run games. the latest MS office suite runs fine and that is what I have to run. Movies play fine and that is as fast as I need to go. The screen will hold tilt at any angle needed for viewing and I think this is better versatility than the nerdy flip around stands that come with those in-voge i-pads. And you don't have to ever fiddle with a seperate key pad if you don't like thumb typing or the lack of feel of fingers pecking on glass. Im not that good a typer and like the positional guidance of real keys. And since I look at the keyboard, the back lighting is very helpfull. (I havent seen a lighted kayboard for a pad.) While very happy so far I rated it a 4 since they haven't figured out yet how to get a dvd drive into this case. You have to get a small external cd/dvd drive if you need to read or burn disks. When I travel it stays at home or office to ligten and simplify the load. File sharing with e-mail or memory sticks has served all my needs on the road.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Portege Z935-P390 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Magnesium Alloy

I use this notebooks for school, video/music editing, stock trading, etc. I will try to express properly how much I love it.

PROS (why I think this beats every competitor that I tried before buying my z935):

1) Jaw-droppingly thin and light. 2.5lbs! This makes a big difference compared to the more common 3lbs+ weight of other ultrabooks.

2) Despite how thin, it has 3 USB ports, and full-sized HDMI and VGA ports (many competitors have mini-ports that require adapters which you might not always have on hand, and many simply do not have VGA). This was a major selling point for me, and it also means it supports 2 external monitors right out of the box.

3) Great keyboard. It has the FULL del/home/pgup/pgdown/end keys running down the side, unlike so many thin & light competitors that have placed those on the arrow keys and require the use of a "function" key to access them! The backlighting is also great. Also, I noticed that most Ultrabooks have VERY flat and unresponsive keys, and while they are also quite thin on this Toshiba, they are surprisingly responsive. In my side-by-side comparisons with other Ultrabooks, there was no competition.

4) Totally silent. I often can't tell if it is on or not because I just can't hear it running. I scoff at the noise of Macbook Pros' humming fans now. Only in rare circumstances does the fan go into hyper-drive, and even then it is impressively quiet.

5) I suppose this would be the case with any similarly spec'd system, but it is quite fast. I can edit HD video, and have everything imaginable open and it does not slow down, and I'm impressed with the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics that come with 3rd generation i5 CPUs. Maybe I'm still living in the mid 2000s, but the fact that I can do so much on such a thin system continues to impress me.

6) It comes with just about the least bloatware of any notebook I've seen out of the box. I only spent about 10 minutes maybe 1 'free' virus scan trials, and some Toshiba diagnostic stuff I didn't need. Many systems come so bogged down with stuff that they are barely usable out of the box.

Cons:

1) The SSD drive is lightening fast, but at 128gb it falls short of what I need. I never though I would have a computer in the 21st centruy that can't store my 70gb of MP3s, but with Win 7 using 20gb, programs I've installed using 15gb, the restore drive using 20gb (you can re-install Windows from this hidden partition at any time), I am left with about 65gb of free space. For many users this would be enough but it's not for me. Still though, when I think that somewhere in this razor thin body is a 128gb SSD it is impressive, and carrying around the external hd when I need it is tolerable (and the USB 3.0 port is quite fast).

2) Battery life, at 4 to 5 hours, is a common complaint. I don't mind since this is about the same as my previous laptop, and that old battery weighed almost as much as this whole system. But yeah, if other systems last 8+ hours then I guess I'm missing out.

3) A 2gb stick of RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so the system only has 1 replaceable slot which supports only up to 4gb, and thus 6gb is the system MAX. This shouldn't be a problem but it is worth noting.

3) I have noticed that almost all new notebooks have touchpads that no longer support pressing-both-buttons-at-once = middle-mouse-click. This laptop is no exception. This was solved by putting a middle-click-simulator program into my startup folder. Just an FYI to all you middle-click enthusiasts out there.

4) It would be nice to have a hard switch to turn wifi on/off. But no ultrabook I have seen has this. At least this Toshiba has many useful functions on the F-keys (mute, volume, screen rightness, wifi on/off, external monitor, etc).

5) Every single store that sells this in Canada sells the bilingual version, which means half the keys have both French and English, and those keys are NOT backlit! Thus I had to get it from an American retailer in order to salvage the backlit keyboard functionality. So Canadian buyers beware (but as long as you order from B&H you'll be safe!).

My hat goes off to whoever designed this notebook. My prospects of finding a satisfactory machine were looking pretty grim until I found it!

Hello everyone ....

I bought this laptop for $799.99 before price went up. The look of this Ultrabook is just great. It is very fast and even faster after upgrade I just did !!!!.

This item weight is just 2.6 pounds what make it very portable....

I did some research over the internet and this laptop is perfectly upgradable (Memory & SSD) but you have to know that doing this may or will void the one year warranty. Do it at your own risk !!!

I went to Intel website and this processor (Intel Core i5 3317U 2.6 GHz ) supports up to 32GB of memory (depending on memory type. This laptop comes with 6GB of memory, 2GB of onboard fixed memory + 4GB on a slot. There is ONLY one slot for memory in case you want to upgrade.

In my case I bought a Kingston ValueRAM 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 (PC3-12800) Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Notebook MemoryIn order to upgrade a memory or a ssd you have to take out a one big cover in the back of the laptop. There is no separate cover for memory or for hard drives such as in other models. There are 13 phillips screws and 1 torx T7 security screw....This last one is located right in the middle of the back cover behind a rubber base.

After the memory upgrade, I have a total of 10GB memory (2GB onboard fixed memory + 8GB Kingston memory on the slot....

Once I turn on the laptop it takes 3 seconds to come up the lock screen...Once I log in to my user account it takes just one second to come up the START screen....This is really fast...Isn't it great?

I still have not done yet the SDD upgrade but I will next month....It comes with a 128GB TOSHIBA THNSNS128GMCP. I will replace it by a 256GB Crucial m4 mSATA 6Gb/s SSD SATA III....

Hope this review is useful for the readers....

I got one of these laptops to set up for one of my relatives and I have to say for the price it is amazing. It has a very powerful graphics card (GTX 460). The laptop is of high build quality. It is a little bulky but it is very sturdy. I prefer sturdy construction to thin and breakable.

The laptop is lightning fast and handles anything you can throw at it. The only downside is the garbage software that comes with it (but it comes with every laptop). After uninstalling it though the problem goes away. It is full HD resolution (1920x1080), and even has some extra features such as a back-lit keyboard. It also comes with the standard ASUS warranty which is 1 year accidental damage, 2 years parts/labor. No other manufacturer comes with a warranty like this out of the box, but in reality it's not needed, the laptop has very strong construction and looks exactly like a stealth fighter. If you are on the fence about this one, I recommend buying it. I have worked with computers and IT for 10 years.

This laptop is awesome, it is very fast and can handle practially all games out for pc rite now and more. asus has done a great job with this laptop. the 2 fans in the back grealtly help cycle the heat as well as the aluminum case helps absorb the heat and keeping the surface cool. very quite and fast. does not shut of due to overheating like some previous asus laptops.

The best laptop in its category with a price to beat any other out there.

Powerful, fast, sleek, quite and cool, simply amazing.

Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop Computer - Classic Black Review

Pros: Price, enough RAM for day-to-day work, good display with a decent graphics chip for video playback, very little bloatware, good wireless connectivity, runs relatively cool with good battery life, webcam.

Cons: Said graphics chip isn't sufficient for gaming. Likewise, the single-core processor is a tad sluggish for multi-tasking. Not quite as bad as you'd think, but this is obviously not designed as a machine for gaming/zippy multi-media performance.

[ ... ]

[This AMD sits around the middle in performance benchmarks, toward the later half of that range. You can find some laptops in this price range with dual-core processors, albeit some with lower clock speeds combined with a bit less RAM.]

For the money (bought mine on sale at Micro Center for $269), the Inspiron m5030 is a good, sturdy laptop. Download Chrome, AVG and Malwarebytes, and you're good to go. However, keep in mind that this is a budget priced-machine (and I'm rating it as such). You get what you pay for. This Dell will be great for internet surfing with 3 or 4 browser tabs open (one on youtube or Pandora, of course), listening/storing music, watching a movie here and there, word processing and the like. But if you plan on playing graphically-intensive games or video editing while having a bunch of other programs running, look elsewhere. Otherwise, this will easily get you through the day.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop Computer - Classic Black

This has been the worst laptop i have ever had! It has been "repaired" three times by dell. All for problems with the laptop not charging or not recognizing the charger. Dells customer service is by far the worst that I have ever dealt with! The laptop is currently sitting under my desk waiting for me to figure out what to do with it since Dell in their infinite wisdom stated that my laptop would not charge due to "damage" that was not covered by my warranty. They said that the mother board needed to be replaced and i guess they did not want to cover their shotty equipment and wanted me to pay a 300 dollar service fee to have it repaired. I would say that is a bit ridiculous since that is almost the price of the laptop when i bought it. I will never buy another dell product due to their horrible customer service and cheaply made products. I expected a lot more from such a big name company. Buy a Sony Vaio if you are looking for a well made product, I had one before the dell and bought another one after the dell stopped working.

I got my new L505-S5988 a little over a week ago. I am very impresseed on how it handles many tasks in Windows 7 with no lag at all. This machine is quiet, and very cool even after hours of use. The full keboard is a nice touch and the screen is very bright and clear. The only negatives I have on this laptop is the speakers while an impressive size for a laptop they sound quite tinny. Besides that it is a fingerprint magnet. Overall with an external pair of speakers and a microfiber cloth and this is a dream machine!!!

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite Laptop L505-S5988 Intel Core2 Duo 2.1GHz /16"

This is my 2nd laptop. My first was a 2006 HP DV5063CL, back when the quality control dropped, but they still had a good reputation. I love this laptop. Fast, well equipped and has a great keyboard. I have always used a USB plug-in keyboard on my HP so that I had numeric keys available without the Num Lock gyrations. Well, the Satellite has a built in numeric keyboard. The touch of the keys is pleasing as well. I not only don't need my keyboard, I don't want it either.

My only complaint is the lack of quality in the speakers. They sound tinny. Even with all drivers updated. Their volume is not that great either. My HP laptop had Altec Lansing speakers, and sounded much better than the S5988.

Still, speakers are a minor point. I will use external spe.ers at home, or a USB sound D/A converter with the external speakers, or headphones at home and when I am out.

Feb, 2011 = An additional important point. Until I sat side by side with a friend at her laptop, I did not realize that this PC was designed as a CINEMA PC. It is made to play wide screen movies. Compared to a standard HP 15.4 PC, my screen is wider but not as high. Shorter by about 1 1/2 inches. The screen hight is about 7 3/4 inches. This does make it easier carry, but there is less height to all of the screens and browsers. More scrolling is needed on each page, and a full page view is a little smaller. For someone with poor eyesight or for photo editing on the go, this may not be the best choice in screen format.

I ordered a used Toshiba Satellite Laptop L505-S5988. Received in 2 days and in very good condition. Windows 7 runs pretty fast on this machine. For this price range it is well worth the money.

The only negative is that speakers suck for this laptop line. This is the problem of this model. I improved sound quality and volume to a certain extent by installing latest HDA drivers from Realtec website.

This is the worst laptop I have ever used in my entire life, bar none. The speakers are absolutely terrible and can barely be heard, even in a quiet room; the keyboard is so touchy that while you are typing on Word you are constantly hitting the mouse pad and highlighting stuff you just typed, hence erasing it; and now finally after only 1 year, my hard drive is bad and so now everything is extremely slow. I will never buy from Toshiba again because of this piece of junk. It's going up on craigslist as broken. Good riddance.

I received this afternoon. Perfect condition. By the way you will receive this with Windows 7 Pro not windows 8 as pictured. In the write up it says Windows 7 professional but shows picture of computer with windows 8 on it. I did not want the 8 and this is the reason I bought it before it was sold out. I hooked up to my wired network downloaded Nortonthen downloaded all my windows 7 updates , changed it to internet explorer 10 and even hooked it up to my Epson wireless printer. It was perfect effortlessly with no error messages at all. Extremely fast browsing downloaded pictures and videos from old computer using usb flash drive to this computer. Perfect. After multiple bad experiences with HP laptops, I vowed never again. Have now purchased my 3rd Asus laptop this year one for me, one for the wife and one for the kids. The last 2 have both been the model listed here, although unfortunately from another vendor (Newegg) where I ended up paying $50 more per unit than current Amazon price.

I really like Asus laptops and have found them easy to setup/use and very reliable. I noticed one reviewer complaining about the touchpad sensitivity, which perhaps results from that person not having adjusted the touchpad settings to his/her personal preference. I also found the factory default touchpad settings a bit hyper, but it was very simple to adjust settings.

This laptop has a maximum memory of 8GB with 2 memory slots, one of which comes empty from factory, so I also purchased a 4GB memory upgrade for this laptop (approx $40). Product ordered was: Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model KVR16S11/4; works great!

I, like others, tried out Windows 8 on demo laptops at local retailers (only Windows they had available) and really hated it. So I was happy to find this laptop still available with Windows 7.

If you are put off by fingerprints on exterior, it is worth mentioning that the top of this unit is not the fingerprint-hiding textured surface as depicted in photos, instead it is a typical smooth surface. No big deal for me.

This is overall a nice computer. For the brief time I had it I liked it ok. The case feels a little on the cheapy side and I wasn't particularly fond of the track pad but it worked. It's a fast system or at least it was until my 13 year old son stole it from me. He has been using it for school and playing games. He hasn't had any complaints and the system is working well for him.

Honest reviews on ASUS K55A-XH51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

I have had this machine a little more than 2 weeks. From the beginning, there have been start-up and shut down failures. Asus has guided me through multiple hard resets and BIOS resets and now says I probably have a virus. One of the first things I did when I turned on the machine was to install and update Kaspersky. Kaspersky has never found a virus, trojan, network attack, etc., etc., etc. The resets are now a daily occurrence. I told the support fellow that the Windows 7 backup fails after the first DVD, but they are "not able to help with backup." If I had purchased this laptop from BEST BUY, I could simply walk in and exchange it within 30 days---with no questions asked. Amazon wants a 15% restocking charge to restock a defective laptop. I rely on Amazon as my first option for many items, both business and personal, but never again will I buy a laptop from Amazon.

This is a nice budget laptop with lots of great features however it has not been reliable. After 3 months of light use it seems to be overheating and randomly shuts down. Now I have to deal with warranty repairs and figure out what to do without a computer for several weeks.

As to start out this laptop appears good in numerous ways. For the casual gamer or replacement of older laptops this is a definite yes. Upon receiving and using it here are the first impressions.

Keyboard

This is a typical laptop keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right side. I was used to no numeric keypad on former laptop but it is a nice addition. If you are not used to an extra keypad it will take a little adjustment on getting used to it when typing but no big deal in my book. Some people like illuminated keys on the keyboard but this one is not. I am in no need of illuminated keys so it fits my uses.

Screen

The screen is 15.6 and is HD. To my eyes an HD to a non HD is not a big deal. For people who want the most super clear screen this will probably work. For the causal gamer, college student, or basic video watcher this is great. If you examine the picture the screen is held up by two hinges. These are sturdy but the screen appears to bounce a little bit at times. If you want the screen to remain totally solid with the rest of the computer while moving around it will not. It bounces a little with every movement but if you sit still and it is on your lap then it is not a problem. If it is on a table it doesn't bounce because the surface stays still.

Mousepad

The mousepad is one of the better ones in my opinion. On some samsung i7s the mousepad is nothing but a huge pad with no left or right click separated. This is part of the 5 series and the mouse buttons are separate from the pad itself. For people with bigger hands it may be annoying due to that the pad is closer to the keys but if you are already used to a mousepad close to the keys no big deal. The mousepad is sensitive but takes some time getting used to. If you are one who uses bluetooth mouse then no big deal.

Video Card

This has a Nvidia and integrated intel 4000. You will have to tinker with the settings in Windows 8 and the Nvidia toolbar to set the primary video card. For gamers you will have to set the each game to nvidia card or use global settings. The Nvidia is suitable for casual games up to high graphic games. In the high graphics games the FPS may fall lower at times. For my personal needs as I am a causal gamer it works just fine.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is good and suitable for the average user. It is 750 GB and the speed is fairly good. At times it seems to be a little slow once in a while but then it doesn't really bother me. If you are expecting instantaneous speed then I would say look elsewhere.

Case

The case itself is aluminum in most parts except the bottom which is a type of fiberglass/plastic. If you ever go to a best buy and look at the Samsung series 5 it is exact same body. For the person who likes aluminum case I would suggest a definite yes. For those who prefer all plastic case then a resounding no.

Weight

The weight of the entire laptop is around 5.5 lbs but to me it seems light. It does not feel heavy or bulky. My former laptop was a tad more heavier around the 8 10 lbs range so this feels light especially while sitting on the lap.

Heat of Laptop

When running games it runs warm and not hot for my needs. If you have pants on, have laptop on your lap, the fan kicks once in a while, but it does not feel hot. My former laptop ran much hotter and required a stand with fans. This one so far seems to run in a good warm ranger with higher graphics. The output of air is on the left side and in front.

Speakers

The speakers are made by JBL. The sound is average to good but to me it's just a laptop. Laptops are not designed to be boomboxes with super sound. For the causal gamer it's just fine. For a person who wants super loud sound and wild bass I would suggest look elsewhere. The speakers can get loud but I prefer to keep sound in the minimal to low range.

Main Complaint

It is preloaded with Windows 8 and extra bloatware. Windows 8 takes time to get used to if you are used to vista, xp, and 7. Windows 8 was programmed with touchscreen in mind which is why it functions with all the apps. You can tinker with Windows 8 and download programs to make it look like Windows 7 or Vista which is what I've done. There are Apps already preloaded which can be easily removed.

Overall, I feel this was a good replacement and should work for a casual gamer, college student, business exec, and home laptop. I will update this review as time passes to keep others informed on the usability over time and how long it will hold up.

EDIT 1: After getting the computer all set up, took off bloatware, it seems to run much smoother. The speed of restarts during updates of Windows 8 is very slow. After updates of Windows 8 finished, seemed to pick up speed.

EDIT 2 1 week after purchase: Since receiving the laptop and using it some of the pros and cons are becoming more obvious. When playing games with the mouse pad over and over it takes more time getting used to than previous laptop. If you play FPS with a mousepad you cannot aim, move, and shoot as much. When you use keys to move and try pointing your gun it doesn't work so well. You have to compensate. If you have an external mouse then this is nothing.

The sound from the JBL speakers I must admit was better than my first assessment. The sound on this laptop can get LOUD if you crank up speakers and settings.

The USB 3.0 ports are slightly tight. When plugging in a usb cord or device you have to push it in just right because it is a snug tight fit. Speed for the USB 3.0 is very good. A 4 GB transfer took less than 2 minutes when I was transferring old files from former computer.

Surprisingly older games run just fine on this laptop such as Deus Ex, Civilization III, Half Life 2, etc. The only odd about this is the screen resolution is 1366 x 768. Many older games do not come with this preset resolution.

Overall, still completely satisfied.

EDIT 3: Approaching 1 month since purchase. Upon using this laptop over and over again with games one phenomenon that is common with high graphic games is the heat of the video card and stability. On utilizing higher graphic games it gets quite warm to hot. If it is on your bare skin lap it could burn. If you have something that shields your laptop then no issue. So far when the laptop gets excessively warm to hot it has NOT crashed with the blue screen of death like with my older laptop which ran vista. In my book this makes me quite satisfied.

Another phenomenon with Windows 8 is it has run older games better than vista. Upon purchasing games off of steam such as the old Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade/Fate of Atlantis, LOOM, and Monkey Island which is DOS based it runs just fine. Games purchased off of Good Old Games website such as Nox and Heroes of Might and Magic IV runs just fine also. The only con within the first month is the power cord runs out the side of the computer. For some people it may be nothing but from my experiences with laptops this can potentially be a flaw due to if the cord has to reach an outlet on the opposite side of the computer. This causes the energy port to bend a little. Over a period of time this could cause a loose connection with the constant bending. A former laptop of mine this happened to. When the power port was in the back of the computer on another one of my laptops the cord would not have to bend left or right. This though is a personal preference and can be accommodated by being mindful of the cord and adjusting when needed. Overall, I am still satisfied and getting more surprised at how well this is as a replacement laptop.

EDIT 4: Approaching 2 month mark with this laptop. So far my primary usages for this laptop in the past 2 months has been gaming, writing a dissertation, watching movies, internet, videos, and digital pictures. Still no blue screen of death with higher graphic games. No major negative issues. Speed is still good, graphics still performing at top notch, speakers no issues, mousepad holding up to extreme usage in games, no problems with battery, cover is resistant to scratches (although sweat hand marks and fingerprint marks are evident when tilted at the right angle but this can be cleaned), and USB ports functioning good. Higher graphic games perform well such as Hitman:Absolution, all the GTA games, Portal 1 & 2, and World of Warcraft on High settings (Ultra settings also but it gets hot). Overall, still completely satisfied and happy with this laptop.

It is very fast, and I think the price is acceptable. The battery doesn't seem to be very powerful though. So if you don't mind carrying the adapter all the time, this could be a good deal~

This computer was very simple for me to set up, took no time at all and I didn't have to pay any techie to do it, just needed to know my wireless password. Simple! Adjusting to its differences from my last laptop has been intuitive.

Aesthetically it's very attractive, contemporary-looking dark brown metallic, much nicer IMO than the black plastic-ridged case of some of the other 4334 series.

I've had it for a couple of months, and still finding it a pleasure to use quick, responsive and easy.

The card reader is a terrific bonus just pull it out of my camera, pop it into the slot in front. The speakers aren't going to thrill audiophiles, but they're certainly fine for normal use.

Only thing that was a bit of a problem was that in shopping for a laptop, Lenovo doesn't have any chart out there that lays out the differences among all the various G570 4334 models, and there are quite a few. In fact, the store where I bought this initially sold me a different 4334! Which is evidence of how Lenovo's model numbering is not at all user friendly. The differences among them are significant: some of them are pentium, some are i3's, some are i5's, with different casing, different other essential specs.

But I am liking it quite a bit, now that I got the one I wanted :)

I love this laptop. I was able to set it up and connect to my wireless network quickly. It has run smoothly since. The display is gorgeous, and they keyboard has a nice feel. It obviously comes with bloatware that needs to be removed, but I don't know of any laptop that doesn't. I purchased this to replace my previous Acer Aspire that I have had since 2005. The only reason I am replacing the 2005 laptop is because the screen is starting to go out. Other than the screen going out, I did not have a single problem with my previous Acer for 7 years (used daily for work and internet). I hope this one holds out just as long.

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V3-731-4695 17.3-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black)

Ordered this laptop on the night of Wednesday 26th September. Selected the 2 day shipping option and it got to my skybox in Miami as promised on Monday 1st October. Took 2 days to get to me (Trinidad and Tobago) and another day for it to be sent out for delivery.

Hubby's a first time laptop owner, so he's having desktop withdrawal symptoms. I have no doubt he'll warm up to it eventually.

That said, as a laptop owner myself, I've tried out the laptop and it works really well. I have a v3-771G-9875 and it compares well, in spite of their obvious differences if you google the specs. As far as looks go, it's identical to mine, there is no difference in the housing.

Granted it's only been a few days, I'm very pleased with it's performance so far. Works well online, which is the main reason it was bought.

Will update later on if there's anything I'd like to add.

To anyone who's thinking about getting this laptop, don't hesitate, the price, shipping costs and processing time fluctuates day to day from what I've noticed since purchasing it here.....I was lucky to have the free 5-8 day shipping option (which, as I mentioned, I upgraded to 2 day at a cost) and it was able to process almost immediately.

October 18th, 2012

As anticipated, the price of this laptop has gone up to US$574.99 plus $9.14 S&H and is coming from the UK and not from Amazon.com LLC as I did.

Hubby now has laptop fever and wonders why on earth he had desktop separation anxiety.

This is a really great laptop for the price we got it for.

I paid US$449.99 plus 2 day air of US$19.20 = $469.19

I bought this laptop a couple of weeks ago (not from Amazon), and am very impressed with it. It's plenty fast for everything I've tried on it. After removing the bloatware that I didn't want/need, I installed a number of my own programs and games, and was pleasently surprised by the overall speed and graphics quality. For grins 'n giggles, I loaded Assassin's Creed on it, and the game ran great with no tweaking at all. A tremendous improvement over other laptops I tried.

I also have an older Gateway M6850-fx with dedicated video and RAM that I paid about 2.5 times more than this one, and I have to say, there isn't much difference in video performance between the two. If the Gateway wins out, it isn't by much.

Great job, Acer!!

I custom-ordered from the Lenovo/Thinkpad site. My configuration:

Thinkpad X230 Tablet

+ Core i7 2.90 GHz Ivy Bridge processor

+ 8 GM RAM

+ 128 GB Solid-State Drive

+ 1366x768 Matte Multi-Touch Screen with Active Stylus

+ 9-cell extended battery (sticks out the back and adds a bulge at the bottom; the 6-cell battery just sticks out the back)

+ Windows 7 Pro

+ Ultra-Base 3 with DVD/RW optical drive

No discrete graphics card option

I've been a long-time Thinkpad fan--including 600E (late 1990s), R40 (early 2000s), T42 (mid 2000s), T420 (late 2000s)--for the rock-solid dependability, non-nonsense styling, and in particular the king-of-them-all keyboard. I mistakely tried a Dell Latitude E6400 for a couple of years, and I truly hated it, despite its own pointer stick and solid construction. When I decided to get this X230 Tablet, the only thing I was worried about was how the new keyboard was going to feel. Well, have no fear. I am a big fan of the new keyboard. It's got deep travel, its motion is the perfect blend between smooth travel and pleasing resistance, and the contoured surface actually feels comforable. This new keyboard is a winner. Other than that, there really isn't anything that needs to be said about this machine that the prospective buyer wouldn't already know. I loaded it up to the gills with the fastest and best of everything, except a 3G cellular card--totalled over $3000 MSRP before a the Ultrabase 3 and extra power adapters. On paper, the only thing the X230T lacks is discrete graphics, but the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics that comes with the Ivy Bridge chipset is good enough for my occasional Engineering analysis and 3D modeling work--just make sure to get a least 8 GB RAM to share with the inegrated graphics. Plus, the Ultrabase 3 is able to support dual monitors via its dual VGA+DisplayPort ports. Just one final tip--get the Multitouch display; you'll be ready for Windows 8 Pro when it's released.

Now i was really skeptical about buying this laptop because it looked a little too good to be true, but wow am i glad i did. If your looking for a gaming or hightech laptop, this is not for you. This laptop would best suit a business proffesional. I've only had it for 2 weeks but its already exceeded my expectations. Im very happy with my purchase. The only con that i could truly say bothers me is that the battery only lasts about 40 minutes off the charger so im gonna have to go and purchase a new battery, but for the price of a 2.4 ghz duo core, 160hd, 4gbs of ram, theres not much complaining here.

I was searching around for a budget laptop and this clearly fit my needs. The package arrived on time and the laptop works great! Set up was easy and the handy quick start guide was helpful. This laptop has everything, wireless connectivity, bluetooth, DVD player and writer, USB ports, SD card reader...etc, etc. I uninstalled the McAfee antivirus and installed Sophos Antivirus for which i have a subscription. I also uninstalled the trial MS Office software and installed MS Office Professional Plus 2010, which I have as a licensed copy.

You can remove any of the preloaded apps and put in your own apps.

Windows 8 takes a little bit of getting used to, but other than that it works ok.

I would like to thank the seller for such an excellent product, at a remarkably cheap price of $324.
