M90 Dell M90 DELL M90 Reviews
I'm very happy with this dell m90. This is the kind of computer not intended to go anywhere but still mobil, say from the office to home on the weekends for example. It may not be the latest technology out there but it is still a great computer for a great price!

Cheap ASUS A52F-XA1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black)
After a few charge/discharge cycles to get things started, the battery lasts about 3-4 hours under normal circumstances with normal settings (e.g., LED screen is on medium brightness). It will last fewer hours if you play movies or something because it takes more power to spin the DVD disc. It's annoying how Amazon listed everything EXCEPT that vital stat, huh? I hope they fix that soon.
This is a good laptop for normal usage like websurfing, MS Word, Excel, light gaming (Plants v Zombies, etc.), and playing movies/watching Youtube/etc.. The P6100 is basically a 2-GHz Core i3 without hyperthreading (but hyperthreading is only useful when you are doing very heavy multitasking or using a highly threaded program). It's even made on the same process/fabs as the Core i3. Thanks to the P6100's integrated memory controller and other efficiencies inherent in the Core i3-style design, it's about as fast as a 2.5-GHz Core 2 Duo. In fact, if you look at PassMark's CPU benchmark list, you can see that the P6100 CPU is in-between a Core 2 Duo E5200 2.50GHz and a Core i3-2312M 2.10GHz. Thus it's well-balanced with a reasonably fast processor and competent GPU (graphics processing unit) that can handle 1080p playback very smoothly in my experience.
The weakest part of this laptop is the relatively slow hard drive, a WD Scorpio Blue at 5400 rpm, which is pretty good for a laptop, but not up to par with a good desktop 7200rpm or SSD. (NOTE: The WD Scorpio Blue's clicking noise is apparently normal and a result of the drive head parking or moving around or something, probably as an energy-saving feature. It's louder than what I've experienced with Thinkpads, but it's not defective just because it's loud.) By the way, if you think ASUS's reliability is bad, wait till you get a load of other companies' "reliability." ASUS is tops in Squaretrade's reliability index (they keep track of which laptops need the fewest repairs), and laptop magazines sometimes run reliability articles where ASUS usually places first or second. Laptop parts can and do fail, so I wouldn't read into one or two bad apples as meaning the entire batch is bad.
This laptop will ask you to make recovery DVDs when you first boot up, though you don't have to make the backups there and then and can delay the backup indefinitely. Backup takes 5 DVD-Rs and several hours. Use quality DVD-Rs if you are getting readback errors. Don't skimp; this is your BACKUP COPY we are talking about here! I recommend Verbatim and especially Taiyo Yuden discs sold by rima.com. The higher-end Kodaks are fine but probably excessive; you don't need the archival-grade gold stuff. Sony DVD-Rs are okay. RITEK is hit or miss, depending on the variant. I dunno about the rest, but chances are that a no-name brand won't last long. If you buy a DVD movie at the store, it is stamped. There is no ink and thus the DVD will last for decades. Stampers are extremely expensive (more expensive than many people's houses, so only big companies own them). Most home users use DVD burners to make DVD-Rs, like this laptop does. The problem is that burned DVD-Rs may last mere months if they use cheap, unstable dyes or have poor bonding (DVD-Rs are made like sandwiches, unlike CD-Rs which are asymmetric and basically a slab of plastic with some dye and lacquer; this is why it's almost impossible to find a "bad" CD-R but much easier to find a "bad" DVD-R).
The laptop doesn't get that hot, so feel free to put it on your lap without fear of sterilizing yourself.
Edited to add: I ran some benchmarks and it seems that there is probably a mediocre RAID controller in the laptop's motherboard, so average sequential read is around 150 MB/s with my Sandforce-powered Vertex 2 SSD, which is laughably slow compared to the >250 MB/s that a Vertex 2 ought to be getting. So feel free to get a slower SSD for this laptop, since it can't max out the faster SSDs on the market anyway. At least you retain the other benefits, like low random access times and shockproof data storage.
The rest of this review is just my general recommendation beyond this laptop:
In my opinion, it's not worth getting a A52F variant with a faster CPU. If you pile on the CPU speed it's still hamstrung by the video so there's no point in getting the faster versions--what are you going to do with a much faster CPU and the exact same GPU? The only times it would matter would be if you were doing something highly threaded that required little to no video, and how many of us do heavy, multi-threaded number-crunching tasks on a laptop? If you want a gaming rig, look elsewhere because the video card here won't be good enough for new games, with maybe a few exceptions here and there. Ditto if you transcode tons of video: get a laptop with a higher-end GPU for that, or get a desktop to pair with the laptop.
By contrast, the difference between a laptop with HDD and with SSD is night and day, so you may want to skimp on the CPU and pour the saved money into an SSD instead. Switching to an SSD is painless: just remove the backplate of the laptop, remove the 2.5" drive carriage, swap drives, and put it back together again, all while touching something grounded or a big piece of metal or something like that, to ensure that your static electricity doesn't kill the drives. It literally took me five minutes to switch to an SSD. You can either use data migration software like Acronis to clone your hard drive onto the SSD (as long as the SSD is large enough to handle the data on the hard drive), or you can install via a spare copy of an OS, which is problematic because this laptop doesn't come with a Windows install disc, and using the recovery DVDs may not work right if you don't install it back onto the original 320GB hard drive. (Note: You can probably use any regular Windows 7 64-bit install disc and use the product key that comes with this laptop [it's on the bottom of the laptop on a sticker]. The product key is the thing that tells the Windows installation DVD which version of Windows to install.) Then use the DVD that ASUS includes with the laptop to install the proprietary drivers.
I also have an issue with the battery not charging correctly. I cannot power on the laptop from the battery. I must use the AC adapter. If I disconnect the AC adapter, the laptop will shut off. The battery indicator icon says that the battery is charging, but it has been stuck at 46% for the past couple of hours. Researching this issue on the internet, it seems that Windows 7 might be causing this. I guess I could blow the HD away and install XP, but I only have the 32-bit version and would waste 1 gig of memory. Not worth the headache.
Unfortunately I have already opened the laptop, so instead of returning it and only getting back 85% of the purchase price. I will take my chances and exchange it for another one. Hopefully the odds will be stacked in my favor the next time around...
It's a nice overall package without breaking the bank. HDMI, Bluetooth, and separate numeric keys are nice additions you don't usually find at this price point. Not a gaming machine (not expecting it) but does the job for everyday use. Programs, startups, shutdowns are pretty fast. It even runs iTunes (64-bit) without much noticeable lag. Battery lasts about three hours if the screen is dimmed and put in battery saving mode. Good for home use or desktop replacement and the occasionally hookup to a flat-screen TV with HDMI connection. This model also comes with a one-year accidental damage coverage, on top of the standard one-year warranty.
The little things matter. The built-in media card reader comes in very handy for downloading pictures from a digital camera (no need for a USB cable). The touchpad can be turned off by simply hitting the FN + F9 keys or you can tell the software to turn it off when an external mouse is plugged in, good for avoiding that jumping cursor during typing when the palm is accidentally brushed against the touchpad.
In case anyone encounters errors during the recovery DVDs burning process, you don't have to start over -the process takes hours to complete. You can retrieve the ISO images of the recovery discs in this folder: c:\users\username\my documents\recovery_tmp\ , provided you don't exit out of the recovery disc burning software (AI Recovery Burner). You need to copy and save these ISO images to a different folder and burn the DVDs at a later time. Be aware that the \recovery_tmp\ folder will be automatically deleted once you exit the AI Recovery Burner program.
If the \recovery_tmp\ folder is hidden, you can unhide it by going through the Explorer menu: Organize > Folder and search options > Hidden files and folders > Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
All five DVD images (ISO files) are ready for copying when the first disc is being burned. The ISO files are named CD1, CD2, CD3, CD4, and CD5. These ISO files are not available prior to the actual (physical) burning of the first DVD disc.
Overall, it's a good value.

Seems like these laptops are hit or miss in terms of reliability. Previously, there was a one-star post that got deleted. The reviewer said that he got the blue screen of death the first time he booted up the laptop. One other person on slickdeals also reported a blue screen the first time the laptop was booted up. Also, many have reported an intermittent clicking noise coming from the hard drive. I can confirm that this is true. Another issue reported is that when creating recovery discs, it keeps on failing when it tries to verify the discs. There are 5 recovery discs in all. I had disc #2 fail, but it was ok on my second try.I also have an issue with the battery not charging correctly. I cannot power on the laptop from the battery. I must use the AC adapter. Honest reviews on ASUS A52F-XA1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black)
I purchased this laptop for a family member. I was a bit concerned because I was not that familiar with the ASUS brand. After receiving the product and taking it out of the box, I was fairly impressed. Its a good looking laptop with a nice keyboard and screen. Though my experience with it is limited, I feel pretty good about the value and what it has to offer. Lots of little touches like HDMI connection, facial recognition tech, and Office for Students add to the overall value. The technical specs are good enough to use it for just about any task except for hard core gaming. If you can get this unit for a good price, its a very nice purchase.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for ASUS A52F-XA1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black)

Good for elementary browsing and elementary use. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN THAT. this laptop has immense wifi issues. Slows down almost instantly if it comes out of hibernate and is definately not as responsive as any other laptops you have used. To add to it they deliver windows 8 with it which in my opinion sucks. Still a good value for money. It has a good form factor and decent battery life.Tuesday, August 26, 2014
Buy HP 2000-2a10nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Like I've said this is the first actual laptop I've ever owned just for me! Of course I've used a few in my day but this one's all mine. Now I will quickly go into pros and cons and then sum it up with what I thought overall from the 3 or so days I've owned it.
PROS**
~Decent speed for surfing the internet and overall meets my needs
~Quick for downloading things (I haven't tried very huge files yet)
~Attractive laptop that looks more expensive than it was
~Plays movies with no fuss
~Easy set up
~Beautiful screen that's pleasant to look at when surfing and wonderful to experience while watching a movie in WMP. Ex: I was watching Spider-Man 3 yesterday and things look excellent.
~Youcam is simple AND addictive to use.
~Can use Skype (haven't yet but will when my aunt wants to)
~For you music heads like me the laptop has play/stop, skip forward, skip back, volume up, volume down and mute buttons so you don't need to go into iTunes or Spotify to adjust things.
~Comes with 2 months worth of Norton Anti-virus program free of charge (after it expires you can register with them for a price). Some say this is far from the best Anti-virus program though so maybe it's a con and when you get the computer you can uninstall it.
CONS**
-Strong glare on screen from certain angles when there is any amount of light coming in through the window
-The computer itself is a smudge-magnet. Fingerprints abound.
-While the computer is pretty fast there are occasions when the loading isn't as fast as you think it should be
-The max sound when watching movies/listening to music is slightly inadequate and you will require speakers to get a better volume. The reason for this is probably because the speakers are located at the bottom of the laptop which I found strange.
-Takes *up to* around a minute before the Wi-Fi connection is found. Most of the time it takes a bit less though.
-Webcam takes just OK pictures that are sorta grainy at times. What can you expect from most laptop computers though?
-The option to adjust the lighting sometimes does not work whether the power supply is plugged in or not. I don't know what that's all about.
Overall, this is a pretty good computer and made for a fine purchase. We got it for just over 400 bones (with everything like tax included) and it fulfills all my basic needs. My old Dell desktop (while good while it lasted over the past 9 years) has been slow as crap for the past few years and using it was complete torture. This one has much improved speed in every way and lets me use all the basic apps like Spotify and Last.fm for my music needs. iTunes loads quickly and applying my own cover art for each album happens in 2-3 seconds if it doesn't happen instantly! At worst my old computer could take up to a minute or so to load this stuff. If you haven't noticed I'm a music head so if these things matter to you then by all means get this. It was easy to set up and is just fun to play around with. May I mention again that it's such a beautiful laptop? It has a nice coat and a shine like no other. This computer makes me feel like a professional! The buttons are very light to the touch. It has a 15.6 inch screen so it has a nice, big view. But it's also very light. I used it without the power two or three times and I must say that it definitely doesn't last 5 hours without the power cord connected. I usually have the brightness on nearly as high as it goes (who actually uses this with the light extremely dim?) so I'm sure it would last longer with less power being used. But I still don't think that it will last a full 5 hours.
(10/20/12) Just now I noticed it said it was going to last 7 hours and some odd minutes. About 15-20 minutes later it says 5 hours and some minutes. So yeah. Not gonna happen.
(10/28/12) After almost 3 weeks of owning it I can't believe by having 2 or 3 programs open that the CPU slows things down and stuff. The absolute no go here and reason I'm knocking its score down from a 4 to a 3.75 is because when I type on Internet Explorer sometimes the computer has to play catch up. On other occasions I type a letter and it doesn't even compute. In that sense it's a big waste of time and no one should go through this with a new computer!!
(11/1/12) It's a new month and I just want to say overall if I had the chance to buy a computer all over again, I wouldn't pick this one. About an hour ago Norton said that Internet Explorer was using too much of the CPU and pretty much ever since, typing successfully has become somewhat of a chore. I have to keep backspacing because not all the button presses are going through. :/ I type like 60 wpm. Shouldn't be too hard to compute. I deducted the score from a 3.75 to a 3.5 and I think that's where it will stay unless the computer blows up or something.
(11/17/12) The slowdown problem has been completely cured now that I don't use Internet Explorer anymore. I'm getting rid of the icon in a minute and now will only use Safari or Google Chrome. I swear IE was causing me hell when I typed most of the time. All the problems vanished though and I'm elated/relieved! =) I'm upping the score a little beyond what it was to begin with (from a 4.3 to a 4.4).
Thanks for reading. =) And long story short: DON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER WITH THIS! You MIGHT have PROBLEMS! So basically I recommend using Internet Explorer to get Safari, Google Chrome or your favorite web browser and then not even using IE. It sucks!
4.4 stars.
Pros: Almost every thing.
Cons: Medium Hard Drive and Glossy housing. This is a fingerprint magnet. Cpu is dual-core but sometimes barely speed like mono-core!
However i will buy another one for a family gift!!

It sucks!
4.4 stars.

Sure there are better laptops out there, but not at this price. I'm your average laptop user and was looking for a product that is both reliable without a lot of "bells and whistles", HP offers this and more. Only down side is the high gloss case. While the case is beautiful, it is a finger print magnet. Aside from that, which is really no big deal, I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for quality from a reputable manufacturer without breaking the bank.Best Deals for HP 2000-2a10nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Well knowing all the specs on this laptop i decide to buy it!! Surprise even when has a small processor is very fast, and the video is stunning!! Can reproduce a video from a MKV File at 1080p smoothly via HDMI in a 42" LED TV!! Has a 5+ hours battery that enhance time without energy connected!!Pros: Almost every thing.
Cons: Medium Hard Drive and Glossy housing. This is a fingerprint magnet. Cpu is dual-core but sometimes barely speed like mono-core!
However i will buy another one for a family gift!!

After much deliberation, I finally decided which laptop to buy, and this HP was a great choice, as soon as i turned it on it connected to the internet which was fantastic! I didn't like that Norton was already installed though, I found it a bit annoying and deleted it and installed ESET virus protection instead. Windows 7 is so cool :-) I love it! The laptop is sturdy and everything it said it would be, and pretty!Thursday, August 14, 2014

After several days of getting to know the laptop, I decided to write a review. I apologize for the lengthy review, but there was no way I could just put in a few sentences for a large purchase such as this.
First of all, I'd like to say that the price point for this laptop is amazingly good. Sure, it could have been cheaper, but you'd lose all of the features it had!
Performance wise, it's a great laptop. It dynamically adjusts the clock speeds depending on the load, meaning you'll save a lot of battery. I've seen it run as low as 700 MHz, and I've seen it go all the way up to 3400 MHz The Haswell processor handles it very well, resulting in a very little loss of performance even when you leave it idling and decide to start opening up programs.
When you need the performance, you can expect it with this laptop.
Now moving on to the graphics part The included NVIDIA GTX 765M is nothing to scoff at. Granted, it's a laptop, so you shouldn't expect it to perform as well as a gaming desktop. For all intents and purposes, this card will run everything you need at 1080p in medium to high settings, or sometimes ultra settings! I was able to play several games in 1080p ranging from medium to ultra settings with an absolute minimum of 60 fps.
NVIDIA Optimus is another cool thing on this laptop, it will automatically determine which graphics processor to use. When you want battery life, you can set it so that it'll run on Intel's integrated graphics unit. However, when you want the performance, it'll switch over to the NVIDIA GTX 765M. You can actually see which mode the laptop is running on based on the color of the power button's LED. Blue for integrated, Orange for NVIDIA.
Of course, you can always override this and set it to permanently use integrated graphics or NVIDIA graphics. If needed, you can also configure each program individually to run on integrated graphics or NVIDIA graphics.
I have to comment about the keyboard. When I looked at the pictures, I was concerned that some buttons were cut short (Such as Right Shift, Enter, and Backspace buttons), but after handling the laptop, it proved that it was of no issue. The backlighting, while it didn't look anything like in the pictures, was still decent. It was sufficiently bright, and there was 3 modes. The first 2 modes being on/off, and the third being half lit. Apparently the purpose of this was to illuminate only the keys you'd use during gaming.
The keyboard itself was a pleasure to type on, sharp enough to receive feedback, but soft enough to have that cushioned feel. Also as an added bonus, the wrist area (the space below the keyboard) stays very cool even while playing games!
The display is perfect, there was no dead pixels. Excellent quality and color. The viewing angles are wide enough for me, so I don't have anything to complain here.
The battery life on this laptop is good, but not amazing. I haven't really tested it in different scenarios though. However, at full brightness, I was able to watch a 2 hour long movie before it died. However, I would expect the battery life to dramatically increase when you reduce the brightness and do less intensive tasks.
The temperatures are decent, idling at around 40-45c for the processor and the graphics card. I did run a prime95 stress test, as I wanted to see how hot the processor could get. The CPU did go up to 93c, but did not go beyond that. I don't expect the CPU to get this hot with normal usage or even gaming for that matter. The GPU ran considerably cooler than the CPU though. The hottest temperature I've ever seen it reach was at around 75c.
Now, moving on to the cons:
Even though I know that this is a gaming laptop, the battery life could have been better. I'm really surprised that they only put a 6-Cell battery in this laptop. It was probably to maintain the slim form factor, but still, I feel like this is something they could have improved on.
The USB 3.0 ports are finicky. On the first USB 3.0 port, it would only perform at USB 2.0 speeds, on the other port, it'll perform at USB 3.0 speeds, but disconnect constantly (USB 2.0 devices doesn't disconnect however). A firmware update fixed the USB 2.0 speeds, but it also switched ports I was having issues with, so the first port is now having the disconnections, while the second one works flawlessly. I suspect that this is a firmware issue, and might be fixed at a later date. However, it's not a big issue. It seems like a common problem, not with MSI products, but with USB 3.0 in general.
Also, on Amazon's product description page, it said that there was 3 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports. This is incorrect, there are only *2* USB 3.0 ports.
The "Cooler Boost" function on this laptop barely did anything. It might have knocked the temperatures down by 1 or 2 degrees, but nothing to be amazed about.
This thing attracts a lot of fingerprints. The area below the keyboard, and on the sides of the keyboard, and the lid all attract fingerprints.
Considering the positive aspects of this laptop, coupled with few (very) minor annoyances, this is a great laptop for the money. I would suggest this notebook to anyone who's looking for a laptop that has the performance of a desktop, and the portability of a laptop.
In the end, everything is great. I love the separate button for the illuminated keyboard and another for the "cooling down mode" which amps up the fans and lowers the laptop temp by 10 or so degrees.
The keyboard feels great. The touchpad is huge and works well (after getting used to it) and there is VERY little bloatware. The MSI utility for creating boot discs also works great (I created a USB key and 4xDVDs).
If you're in the market for a 1200.00-1300.00 performance laptop this is the one.
The screen is beautiful as is the chassis. All around, the best laptop I've ever had.
Original Review:
What can I say, the price you pay for the amount of features, specs and overall quality that you get out of this laptop is just unbeatable. Its no wonder I couldn't find this laptop at Microcenter, Bestbuy, or anywhere else; and they were selling like hotcakes online. Its amazing.
I'll go through the pros and cons (very few) of this beauty.
Pros:
17.3 Inch Screen running Natively at 1920x1080 (1080P). The Anti-Glare and Anti-Reflective work as advertised.
i7 Generation 4 Technology, boy its fast.
SteelSeries Mechanical Keyboard BUILT-IN to this laptop (with light-up keys) (Detection speed is amazing. Also has a Turbo-Fan button which pushes heat out quickly from the inner-workings.
2 USB 3.0 ports for your fast external drives & 2 more USB 2.0 ports for other devices.
Quallcomm Killer Network Manager included with this laptop (keeps you lag and Packet-loss free)
12 Gigs of RAM (Multitasking galore) + Adobe Premiere Pro and Cinema 4D work without any lag
Discrete Graphics (GTX 765M) (Plays everything on high with great frame-rates (60+), plays a few games on Ultra with 60+ frames, but most with acceptable frames (30~45FPS))
VGA & HDMI out for multiple TVs, resolutions and devices.
Bluetooth Syncing with Mobile Devices and Storage
750Gigs of space (Partitioned into 500Gigs for System and 250 for a data partition) (@7200 RPM vs 5800RPM). Included with IntelRapidStorage Technology which actually makes the drive perform closer to a 10,000RPM level than 7200.
Cools well, even without a Cooling Pad (though I'm still getting one)
No bloatware (Useless or advertising programs that take up space, memory and are annoying)
BluRay Combo Drive (How could they do this at $1,300?)
Cons:
No Solid State Drive; SSD. (Would improve performance greatly). If you are proficient at computers, I would suggest purchasing a 128GB SSD and installing it into this laptop, then cloning the system partition to it. It will make this laptop blazingly fast. I'm thinking of doing this myself soon. If you don't know how to do it, and you'd really like the performance out of an SSD, ask your local tech at one of the big stores to do it for you. Its worth the cost.
Windows 8 64-Bit (I'm getting used to it, but still prefer 7)
Low Battery Life (2.5 Hours). Its a gaming laptop though, so its to be expected. Tip: If you want your battery to maintain its maximum performance, disconnect it after its fully charged if you don't have to go anywhere with your laptop. The laptop runs fine without a battery if its plugged in.
The battery is fine for around the house and a short trip somewhere. Otherwise, if you want to go out and game, bring your charger. If you have the need for long battery life and mobile gaming on-the-go, go ahead and get a Razer Edge Pro.
For this price, there are surprisingly few cons with some very high quality parts and software included. MSI did a great job bringing together one of the best multi-manufacturer laptop builds I have ever seen. It looks sleek, it feels sleek and it runs quick and light (software wise and literally). I'd say build a desktop if you don't really need everything to be all-in-one, but the fact remains that its a very tempting buy. You could build only a little better desktop for the same amount of money ($1,300).
Update (08/07/2013):
Before you take this update harshly, let me say that I still think this laptop is very well made, works well, and is extremely high quality for an attractive price. If I could, I would buy it again. There are just a few issues that need to be addressed to make it perfect.
After a few days with this laptop, figuring out all the little nuances, there are a few minor things that you should do to have it running optimally for games. Because of this, I have lowered my rating to four stars. This takes away from the ease-of-use, which otherwise would make it 5 stars.
MSI should update their system image for their Killer E2200 drivers.
#1: Be sure that you always have the Power Options set to High Performance. Otherwise, this laptop WILL throttle the graphics card. I can't tell you how many times I've thought that something was wrong with the graphics card because of laggy games, only to discover that I had the Power Options on Power Saver. Also, make sure that the laptop is PLUGGED IN with the charger. The graphics card will throttle heavily otherwise. This makes high-end mobile gaming on the battery impossible.
#2: When you first get the laptop, uninstall the Qualcomm Killer E2200 Software, and get an official update for "Embedded Ethernet" for Windows 8 64-Bit from their official website: www.killergaming.com. This is simple and easy. The current driver that shipped with this image causes a blue screen at times. This will fix that issue.
#3: Buy a Laptop Cooling Pad. I'm not fully sure that its necessary, but I think it would contribute to the overall health and longevity of this system. It DOES have a high-end, heat producing card and processor in it, and at times it does seem to get pretty hot. The cooling pad I use (Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Ultra-Slim Laptop Cooling Pad) has helped keep the heat just coming out of the vents where its supposed to.
Because of the blue-screen and having to have the laptop plugged in to play any high end games, and a possibility of needing a cooling pad, I've lowered my rating to 4 stars. That isn't to say those 3 things took away from this laptop, I don't mind plugging it in to play high end games or having a cooling pad, or even fixing a bluescreen issue, but for others understanding of this product that its not quite a mobile gaming laptop and it does have an issue with a driver that causes system failure, and that it could overheat, I must lower the rating.
cons, Have not found a single con yet, besides the small keyboard layout. But you get use to it!

This laptop is amazing! Super fast, looks great, solid build. I have been using 17" HD laptops for years and this is the best I have ever used. I bought an miniPCI-E SSD card and used Acronis to move the system image over to it and now it boots SUPER-FAST! The only issues I originally had were figuring out how to scroll with the touch pad. It's like a Macbook, you use two fingers and drag in the reverse direction you want to scroll. Took me forever to figure it out, but it works great. I also couldn't figure out how to force the video card to be the Geforce versus the Intel HD one, so the Windows Experience Index was pretty low (comparatively) until I went in to the Nvidia control panel and changed the 3D default settings. Then, it was zooming (though, no real need for it to always use discrete graphics, so I switched it back). In the end, everything is great. I love the separate button for the illuminated keyboard and another for the "cooling down mode" which amps up the fans and lowers the laptop temp by 10 or so degrees.

Brilliant work MSI, runs like an alienware preforms like a god, could not be happier with a product this great at this price! I believe its on par with the alienware 18, just does not have random cool programs or interchangeable blacklit keyboard, or a huge hard drive. But lets serious, you can pickup a 1tb external hard drive for 3$. If you going to go anything better than this, go in to the 2000-2300$ bracket.cons, Have not found a single con yet, besides the small keyboard layout. But you get use to it!

This laptop runs WoW on ultra no problem, Skyrim, FarCry3 all on highest, and every other game I have thought to try. Pretty large laptop but beautiful screen. DONT try to uninstall windows 8 however because you'll need to order the recovery disks separately to get your windows 8 key back which is hidden in the bios. This laptop is definitely worth the money. EDIT: Only buy this if you frequently travel, otherwise build your own rig! It's a nice laptop and all, but it is just that. A laptop. In a few years this will most definitely not be powerful enough while a custom built PC will allow you much more flexibility. If you're a real gamer, don't buy a laptop.Friday, August 8, 2014

We've purchased about a dozen of these for clients so far this year. Very solid pieces of equipment and the i5 vPro CPU leaves nothing to be desired. The CPU is beefy and does consume some power, so you may want to get an optional 9-cell battery if you can't charge it often. For normal everyday use, you can disable one core in the BIOS and reduce the system to a dual-core (well, one core plus hyper-threading). Never disappointed with a T420.I have used this model laptop at work and home and have never had any problems. It's fast and reliable. The ability to change the DVD writer out for a backup hard drive is great! I am using one at home with a docking station that lets me use it as a desktop when docked but I can just remove it and use it in any room also. (I like to have a larger screen when working on photos). If you put a SSD drive in, wow, boot times around 15 secs.

I seriously paid 1600$ for this laptop with these great specs...and it has a dead pixel and it took a small army of nerd friends to figure out why it couldnt run Unity 3D, because of defaulting to the intel graphics instead of the nividia. and i kid you not required over 150 windows updates to work properly. Im so sad and frustrated with this purchase. I cant believe there is a dead pixel, dont by this.Best Deals for Alienware ALW17-4681sLV 17-Inch Laptop

Buy ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Black)
I purchased this laptop after reading thousands of reviews. I wanted something light (7h), small and powerful (>intel i5). I was considering other options like Acer S3, asus UX31, sony vaio SB/SA series and Toshiba Portege R835.
S3I am not a fan of Acer and it came with the SDD which I found too small.
UX31It is really good and nice but it has less connectors and was too expensive. Not sure if it can be upgraded.
VaioI was about to buy it, but it was thicker and heavier and the battery was not so good. It had the option of the docking station though.
R835I read it had issues with fan noises and with excessive heating. But it was lighter than U36sd and had a cd-rom drive.
Finally I decided to go for the Asus u36SD + an hybrid SSD/HDD Seagate Momentus XTSeagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ST95005620AS .
This machine as it stands is very good. It is light, long battery (8:30h in saving bat mode, but if you use video media it is near 4:30h), and powerful. The only downside is the HDD that comes originally, it is a 5600rpm and for my taste it is too slow. I wanted a faster HDD, but SDD are too small in storage size or too expensive. So, I went for an hybrid SSD/HDD (Seagate momentus).
Changing the HDD is not difficult if you are a bit skilled and there are many tutorial videos on youtube that show you how to do it. You have to open the computer because the hatch under the laptop only gives access to the RAM memory. But, as I say, it is not difficult and the change is really worth. The speed increase is very noticeable from the very first moment.
The laptop is very quite, no issues with fan noises or excess of heat. The keyboard is chiclet style and very comfortable. Also the mouse is multitouch and works very good.
Clearly the down side of the computer is the screen. It is not the best screen in the world. It is shiny LCD but it is not the worse either (toshiba is worse). If you compare it with a MacBook Air... it is just a quite bad screen. If you are gonna use the laptop mainly outdoors, just buy a Mac Air or UX31 which also has a really good screen. However, for normal use indoors and seldom times outdoors it is ok. Actually, I don't think that working with a 13" screen is nice, so I just plug it to a desktop screen and it works great for me. But, as I said, if I need to use inside it is good and and enough. In addition, ASUS provides an utility that makes colors more vivid and a better contrast.
Just a note, I use it inside and have the brightness at 50-60%.
Note: it has a 2 year worldwide warranty not 1 year as it is stated in the specifications.
It comes with 4gb of RAM in one slot. I bought and extra 4gb last week, and the difference in normal use performance almost did not change. However, to handle heavy tasks it is now better. But a regular user does not need the 8gb. 4 is enough.
All in all, I am delighted with the laptop and I do recommend it specially if you combine with a 7200rpm HDD or an hybrid one, even an SSD.
I give it 4 stars because I consider that 5 stars is perfection and this item is still improvable, i.e. screen and HDD. For all the rest it is perfect.
I replaced the stock hard drive with an Intel 520 Series 120 GB Solid-State Drive in about 20 minutes without any problems (search the web for "how to open an ASUS u36"). The laptop went from moderately fast to ludicrous speed.
I bought this laptop for the discrete graphics, so that I could test and debug CUDA software from the coffee shop instead of my office. The GT520M won't be winning any speed contests, but if you need NVidia graphics in a lightweight laptop, it's a great buy. If you don't need discrete graphics but want the speed of an SSD, then look for "ultrabooks" or their ilk -there are quite a few out now.
I bought with a crappy 640GB drive and wanted to exchange it for an Intel 320 SSD, no luck. There are many user comments on the web stating the same problem.
I am too worried about the warranty and messing up the notebook to go thru the painful dissasembly. This is the only CON i can think of. Everything else is great.
This is still a 5 star product in my eye becuase of the great build quality.
i upgraded to windows 8 and its so fast and reliable....

I've been using this U36SD-DH51 for the last couple weeks, and I love it. It is thin, light and fast. The battery life for regular stuff like web browsing, even with the screen brightness up, is about 7 hours (though I fully expect that to wane as the battery ages). The case and the keyboard feel solid, and typing is comfortable.I replaced the stock hard drive with an Intel 520 Series 120 GB Solid-State Drive in about 20 minutes without any problems (search the web for "how to open an ASUS u36"). I got the equivalent U36SD-A1. I love the construction and speed of this computer. It is a little heavier than an Ultrabook or Macbook-air. But, you get the benefit of a fully powered i5 even running at 3.0GHz well ventilated. I think this is the way to go. The ultrabook doesn't make a lot of sense to me when it is only running at 1.7GHz. I can really run anything I want on this little dynamite with great response. It is even better after I put in a Sandy Force SSD.Honest reviews on ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Black)
I have previously owned an ASUS ultra thin and light notebook before this one, so I can personally say that I am very satisfied with their build quality. Build quality is top notch. However, this particular model U36S does not allow you to exchange hard drives easily because there are NO accessible compartment at the bottom!I bought with a crappy 640GB drive and wanted to exchange it for an Intel 320 SSD, no luck. There are many user comments on the web stating the same problem.

I did a good bit of research on laptops before making a purchase, went into stores, read reviews, etc. A few comments.
A number of people note how the screens are flexible, go into a store and try bending screens, all thin laptops are quite flexible. Seems odd to me too, but if everyones doing it, it must work.
I saw a few reviews about wireless problems with the u310, but saw many other good review so I disregarded. Don't disregard. There is a detailed summary at .
Seems to be that lenovo figured out the wifi was really bad, but kept selling units and just fixed it on the new ones. I bought my laptop on Sept 20, it was manufactured on May 28, the fix didn't come out until July 23... The date is printed at the bottom of the tag on the outside of the box, so if you buy in a store you can check.
In my case, the speed seemed not great to me, but the range was terrible. I got maybe 50 feet from the router before I lost signal. Even my phone (which I think has pretty bad reception for wifi) was better than that. I decided to go into work and see if I could pick up signal at my desk and couldn't ... back to the store we go. I read lots of reviews of 2-3 weeks for repairs and the problem not fixed, didn't sound like what I wanted to do with a brand new laptop.
Aside from the wifi issues, it was a great unit, solid build, really nice touchpad, good keyboard, screen was fine. I suppose some people might only use a machine at home, but for anyone that travels around, I think the wifi problems makes this machine a no-buy.
The old wifi signal problem is fixed now, I've tested it intensively use on varies conditions comparing to my thinkpad laptop, iphone, ipad, etc. People who are interested in this laptop shouldn't worry about it now.
but the battery life is not that great. It is advertised as 7h which is not quite possible.
under normal usage of wifi and multimedia, I got about 4h battery life.
Do not buy until Lenovo fixes it if Wifi is important to you.
Also, one thing that I did not know when ordered this laptop is that the RAM is maxed out at 4 GB for this laptop and no, you cannot upgrade RAM because there are no more empty slots left. This laptop has only one slot with 4 GB max rating! In this day and age where 8 GB RAM is quickly becoming a norm, I never thought there are computers that are restricted to 4 GB RAM with only one slot!
I did notice slightly noisy cooling fan, but I read that it is a common feature for all ultrabooks. So, I can live with it.
Anyway, the performance so far has been good and I will update the review once I get a chance to try more features. For the price I paid ($653.99, after $100 Amazon gift card), I think this laptop offers high end features compared any other laptop on the market today.
Back in April 2013, I acquired a Lenovo laptop (about $900), directly from the Lenovo.com site. Everything works satisfactorily until 4 months later. The laptop wouldn't boot and the error message points at a hard disk drive failure.
Request #1: A quick and pleasant call to Lenovo and, two days later, I receive a replacement drive and reinstallation DVDs. The hard drive is used, below the specification of my previous drive... and started to fail noisily in the middle of the reinstallation procedure!
Request #2: Calling Lenovo and asking for another drive, which I receive promptly. I install the drive (used parts and below specs again), turn the laptop on and... What's that horrible whining sound?! Conclusion: Yet another failed disk. And to be sure of my diagnostic, I extract an old drive from an old laptop. I successfully reinstall my Lenovo laptop and the old drive.
Request #3: Calling Lenovo again. They want me to return the laptop. I make sure they understand the nature of the problem, why returning the laptop makes little sense and why I expect a drive with, at least, the same specifications as the one I originally bought. A week later, the promised drive wasn't there yet (and actually never arrived).
Request #4: On the phone with Lenovo... They don't know what happened to the previous drive. They'll send a new one, with the right specifications. I didn't bother opening the drive when I received it, it wasn't the right kind!!! In the meantime, tired of waiting, I had bought a new drive at a local store. Unsurprisingly, it did wonder in my laptop.
Request #5: Moving online to avoid being impolite on the phone. There, I go through a weird registration and realized all the limit of their support tools. I almost feel sad for the support people working there. I try my best to describe all the extent of my issues with Lenovo. The field limit to 150 characters don't help, at all. My request: A real solution, in the form of a real drive or a real check to cover the purchase of a new real drive. And, a couple of days later, I receive... an empty box?? After some head-scratching, I understand they want me to return my laptop... #FacePalm!!! It's time to share my story with the Amazonians.
Request #6: I'll get to that as soon as I'm done posting this story. I'll update the post if anything interesting happens.
If you ever buy the laptop you're looking at, I wish you good luck!

Bought this yesterday and I really liked the look and design.. however, luckily I tested the Wifi reception due to reading the reviews here. Sure enough it only got good speeds when right next to my router. I moved into next room and it dropped to under 1MB (From 20MB) I even changed the settings and un-installed the power mgmt software as detailed on Lenovo forums and it did not work. My 7 year old Dell gets way faster speed over Wifi which is un-acceptable.Do not buy until Lenovo fixes it if Wifi is important to you.

I just received my Lenovo U310 and my first impressions are that it is stylish and lightweight. When I started playing around with the laptop, I figured that the mouse pad, though responsive and accurate, makes an awkward clicking sound every time I tap on the pad. No, I am not talking about left or right clicks, just tap of the finger in the middle of the pad! I figured this is because the mouse pad does not have separate left and right click buttons, but the whole mouse pad tilts/depresses to make the click. Also, one thing that I did not know when ordered this laptop is that the RAM is maxed out at 4 GB for this laptop and no, you cannot upgrade RAM because there are no more empty slots left. Best Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black) Deals
I'm a somewhat advanced computer user and had been looking at laptops for a while before buying the Acer AS5742Z-4685. I dug into all of the specs of about 6 different models and zeroed in on this one as the best value. The price point was above the $300 I spent on our 'family' laptop a year ago, but I'm glad I spent the extra $100 (check out some of the private sellers' prices).
Pros: Crystal-clear LED screen, fast computing, great multi-tasking, not too much crap-ware pre-installed, lightweight, and easy-to-use keyboard
Cons: Battery life is good, but not great; price point is a bit high if you're willing to wait for Black Friday or Gold Box deals... which I obviously wasn't)
Overall, this laptop is a good buy in the $500 range, a great value at the $400 level, and--if it ever goes on sale in the $300 to 350 range--don't miss your chance to buy it!
Excellent finish which makes smudges hard to see. Screen is nice and big, crystal clear. We have 4 Acer monitors and all work very well. Not a single issue with them and two are several years old, so we were pretty sure Acer would make a good laptop as well.
The laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium but no DVD for it so you can't reinstall easily. The key code for it is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, so if you get an OEM Windows 7 DVD that key should work to reinstall Windows 7. It also comes with some craplets, but you might be interested in McAfee's antivirus (we weren't, we use Microsofts Security Essentials, free download from MS with an authenticated Windows system).
We reformatted the hard drive into multiple partitions and installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate (we use BitLocker drive data encryption for data on the laptop and on the USB drives). The reformat and reinstall worked just fine (and no craplets!). Since there is no disk with the system, there were a lot of missing drivers (for the network card, wireless device, several Intel drivers, the camera, etc). All were easy to find at the Acer web site (get them beforehand, unless you have another computer to download with).
Once we added the network driver, we could instantly see the local network computers and printers, and internet. Once that was found, we went to Microsoft Updates and that seemed to find most the other drivers for updating, including the video card drivers. The Acer website for the AS5742Z lists drivers for both AMD video cards and nVidia, although you probably don't want or need both, and they are large files. The Microsoft Update website detected and installed the appropriate video driver, which makes life a lot easier.
If you decide you want to install Windows XP (we tried just to check if it works) it does run fine, although we did have to go into the BIOS at bootup and change the SATA setting to IDE. The default value crashes XP during installation. That's a minor issue, since Windows 7 is so much better anyway. If you use the normal 32 bit XP, you won't use all of the 4GB of ram; you need the 64 bit operating systems to do that, which is why Acer provides the Windows 7 64 bit version.
The laptop has 3 USB ports, two on the right side, one on the left. We put USB thumbnail drives into them all to test them and had no issues. We tried the wireless network, it was fine. We also connected to our 10/100/1000 wired network, and the laptop transferred a large file at the full 1Gbps speed. We then tried a wireless modem from Verizon, and it also worked as expected.
The keyboard is very nice for a laptop. The mouse pad on the laptop is ok, but we prefer a normal mouse. We put in a USB mouse made by Roswell (a cheapo one for $4) and it worked right away. The 4GB of RAM were fully accessible, thanks to the 64 bit operating system (both on the OEM version it came with and our own Win7 64 Ultimate).
The only thing we will get for it is a car charger. We have a standard laptop briefcase, it fits into that fine.
Overall, we are delighted with this laptop and expect to buy another one in a few months.
Highly recommended!
Pros: Crystal-clear LED screen, fast computing, great multi-tasking, not too much crap-ware pre-installed, lightweight, and easy-to-use keyboard

Bought this laptop for about $450, free expedited shipping from Warehouse Sur+ (Amazon seller). Arrived late due to FedEx, not the fault of Amazon, Warehouse Sur+ or Acer, of course. It was double boxed for shipping, arrived in excellent condition.Excellent finish which makes smudges hard to see. Screen is nice and big, crystal clear. Best Deals for Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)
This is an amazing laptop. Screen is crystal clear and very bright. The top cover and spots where your wrist sit have a nice texture to them making fingerprints and smudges hard to see. The p6100 is a great budget processor. This beats down the similar price athlon II mobile processors and seems to be ahead of the old core 2's in benchmarks. The Battery life seems to be about 3.2hours while browsing the net and working with outlook and word. Keys have a great feel and the way it is designed, you really cant get food or other small objects caught under them. This laptop does have 3 usb, 1 on the left and 2 on the right.Highly recommended!
Honest reviews on Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)
I bought the HP G62-340US last week but returned it when I saw this Acer Aspire with 1 more GB of RAM for only $20 more at an office superstore. I am a typical home user who uses the laptop primarily for photos, web browsing, some word processing and filing taxes. Wow, I am impressed by this laptop. I especially love the number key pad on the right hand side. That's a luxury that I never had with any of my previous laptops. The keyboard is also very nice with full-size keys that did not require too much force to register. Unlike other reviewers, I did not have any ergonomic issues with the off-center touchpad. Installed Internet Explorer worked seamlessly. I was also able to download Google Chrome as an alternative web browser. So far, no complaints with this value-priced Acer Aspire.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)
Two things annoyed me about this laptop once I bought it (new) and started using it. One was that the CD/DVD drive was extremely flimsy, and the other was that the fan for the motherboard was constantly turning on and off, on and off for no reason, and was very loud. The former problem I decided I could live with, the latter I decided I could not. I did some research and found that many others had had the same problem with this laptop and had written that the problem could be solved by flashing the BIOS. Well, of course, I thought a laptop was supposed to work right if it's brand new, but anyway I contacted tech support and they told me which BIOS file to download, which I did, and I flashed the BIOS. It seemed to make the fan better. However, a few days later, I was watching a video on YouTube, and BAM, the computer froze and the motherboard started making a loud, repetitive clicking sound. I restarted it and tried to watch the video again and it did the same thing. I have never seen that happen to any computer, new or old. I cannot recommend buying this laptop. Go for another brand.Thursday, May 8, 2014
Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 14" Laptop (2.2 GHz Intel Core i5-430M Review
New doesn't always spell better. This is an older Toshiba model but with the WiDi (wireless display) feature built in, this makes this a nice device with an edge. Along with the Netgear TV1000 box which connects to your tv, you can wirelessly send whatever you are viewing on your laptop to your tv. There are newer versions and models of this very feature, but the color scheme of this particular model is eye catching. It has a blueish mirrow chrome top panel and the mouse buttons match. The outer edges along both the left and right side of this machine are also of this color scheme.
There are other nice features like a row of dedicated buttons. Two inparticular are the ECO button and the WiDi button. These are my favorites. The ECO button allows you to put the unit into power consumption conservation mode which you the administrator can modify. The WiDi button launches the wireless display feature. Without these keys you would have to go through a number of clicks to launch either of these features.
This particular model is not quite as fast as some of the other i5 processor models i've used but it's acceptable. The screen viewing area is just slightly over 11 1/2 inches which to some may be a drawback (but remember that you can send it to your tv using the WiDi feature). The unit is not too thin nor too thick. Not too heavy yet not too light as to make one feel as if its less durable. The number keys set above the QWERTY row of characters. Typing can sometimes be a little cramped.
Despite my last paprgraph I still like this model and would recomend it to someone looking for an older model laptop with decent features. Having the WiDi was the deal sealer for me. I tend to like the not so newer models of many devices for various reasons.

Reviews of Dell XPS 17 X17L-751ELS 17.3-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)
Love this laptop! It's great looking, feels sturdy, and it runs very quiet. The display is beautiful colors are bright and true to life. I even like the touchpad, which is a first for me. For me, it's just responsive enough without being too sensitive. I have not noticed any issues with it getting hot, but I have only had it for 3 days now.
The backlit keyboard feels great very easy to type on, and it's very helpful when working in a not so brightly lit room. The 2nd generation Core i7 processor is really fast. All my programs and applications are ready to use within a minute or so after I turn on the computer.
I had one minor issue after I finished with all the Windows updates (there were about 50 of them). Every time I shut down the computer, it would restart instead of shutting down. It was getting frustrating, so I did some research online. Some suggested that it was a "hardware issue", but one person suggested that it could be that the BIOS needed to be updated. I went to the Dell website, and there was a BIOS update there, along with several driver updates. I downloaded all the updates, and the restarting problem was gone. It's been smooth sailing ever since.
Aanother plus for me, I originally ordered this model (but without the blueray player) from BB because I liked their financing of 18 months with no interest. I ordered online, because it is not an item they carry in the store. Anyway, the item stayed in process for several days after the estimated arrival date with no progress. As I got more and more impatient, I decided to see if Amazon carried that model, or a similar one. Bottom line is, Amazon offers 24-month financing (even better!). Even though the Amazon price was about $100.00 more than the other store, I only wound up paying $20.00 more for an upgraded model, even though I used 1-day shipping, because Amazon does not charge the sales tax sweet!!
I needed something for making movies, and the Intel i7 handles it just fine.
All I can see is the cursor sign. I can only run it in safe mode, and I haven't even used it that long.
I'm appalled by how short it lasted..
To My Shock!!! Dell representatives personally told me this computer does not have 3-D. I of course immediately called Amazon. Long story short the word capabilities is deceptive. This laptop can have 3-D if it had the right processor and the right screen which it does not. It may be possible to connect it to a 3-D TV and have 3-D but that's not what I bought it for. The nice people at Amazon quickly understood my problem and immediately issued me a refund following the return of the item. Do not purchase this laptop if you want it to have 3-D already on screen. If you had any doubt to what I'm saying simply called Dell give them the model of this computer and hear it straight from them this computer does not come up equip with the ability to support 3-D as it is now.

if you're purchasing this laptop because you think it has 3-D will find yourself disappointed. I purchased this laptop after reading that this laptop had 3-D capabilities. I looked it up online and also saw reviews from other people saying 3-D works great. The person who said that as I now know was not telling the truth. While this laptop may have good features there are better laptops with better features for the same price. The catch of this laptop to me was supposed to be 3D abilities. In the description it stated that it has 3-D capabilities. Upon receiving it I saw a button program that said enable 3-D in the control panel that says 3-D management or setting. I thought great maybe I'm misunderstanding some things that it might've been a bit more difficult for me to set up 3D and I'm not understand what's going on. By the way I purchased the nvidia 3-D wireless glasses the thought maybe just maybe I didn't know what I was doing. My brother suggested that since the laptop that I bought from Amazon that it might still have the Dell warrantee and therefore I called Dell to set up my 3-D. I did so I waited a day and called Dell to help me set up my 3-D.To My Shock!!! Dell representatives personally told me this computer does not have 3-D. I of course immediately called Amazon.
