Nice machine. I'm not a heavy user and don't it for games. For my needs, this machine is great. I had to get use to Windows 8 it took about 2-3 days. I messed up the machine by changing settings and then had to reload the software but it has worked great ever since. I love the touch of the keyboard on this laptop (had HP Pavilion and didn't like the keyboard). I would never know it was refurbished, no problems at all. I have no problem recommending it. You do have to purchase software such as Microsoft Office. I found a free download of a similar program called Libre. If you know how to use MS Office you will know how to use this free software. It saved me $140. You can give them a donation to support the program but it is not required for it to download and operate. This product was a good choice and I like it.

The Sony VAIO SVE1411BFXW has a very nice look. The laptop , however, is fairly slow with respect to Intel Core i3 4GB. Also, it gets hot very fast and the fan cannot do very much with that. Another minus is NO CD installation for operating system (Win 7 Home Premium) went along with the product.

All the outputs are on the back. Awkward. When you tip it forward to plug something in, the damn power button on the FRONT turns the laptop off. Brilliant. And, good luck finding the power button. The DVD is also hard to find.

Other than that, it works fine.

Buy ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Black)

ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
I purchased this laptop after reading thousands of reviews. I wanted something light (7h), small and powerful (>intel i5). I was considering other options like Acer S3, asus UX31, sony vaio SB/SA series and Toshiba Portege R835.

S3I am not a fan of Acer and it came with the SDD which I found too small.

UX31It is really good and nice but it has less connectors and was too expensive. Not sure if it can be upgraded.

VaioI was about to buy it, but it was thicker and heavier and the battery was not so good. It had the option of the docking station though.

R835I read it had issues with fan noises and with excessive heating. But it was lighter than U36sd and had a cd-rom drive.

Finally I decided to go for the Asus u36SD + an hybrid SSD/HDD Seagate Momentus XTSeagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ST95005620AS .

This machine as it stands is very good. It is light, long battery (8:30h in saving bat mode, but if you use video media it is near 4:30h), and powerful. The only downside is the HDD that comes originally, it is a 5600rpm and for my taste it is too slow. I wanted a faster HDD, but SDD are too small in storage size or too expensive. So, I went for an hybrid SSD/HDD (Seagate momentus).

Changing the HDD is not difficult if you are a bit skilled and there are many tutorial videos on youtube that show you how to do it. You have to open the computer because the hatch under the laptop only gives access to the RAM memory. But, as I say, it is not difficult and the change is really worth. The speed increase is very noticeable from the very first moment.

The laptop is very quite, no issues with fan noises or excess of heat. The keyboard is chiclet style and very comfortable. Also the mouse is multitouch and works very good.

Clearly the down side of the computer is the screen. It is not the best screen in the world. It is shiny LCD but it is not the worse either (toshiba is worse). If you compare it with a MacBook Air... it is just a quite bad screen. If you are gonna use the laptop mainly outdoors, just buy a Mac Air or UX31 which also has a really good screen. However, for normal use indoors and seldom times outdoors it is ok. Actually, I don't think that working with a 13" screen is nice, so I just plug it to a desktop screen and it works great for me. But, as I said, if I need to use inside it is good and and enough. In addition, ASUS provides an utility that makes colors more vivid and a better contrast.

Just a note, I use it inside and have the brightness at 50-60%.

Note: it has a 2 year worldwide warranty not 1 year as it is stated in the specifications.

It comes with 4gb of RAM in one slot. I bought and extra 4gb last week, and the difference in normal use performance almost did not change. However, to handle heavy tasks it is now better. But a regular user does not need the 8gb. 4 is enough.

All in all, I am delighted with the laptop and I do recommend it specially if you combine with a 7200rpm HDD or an hybrid one, even an SSD.

I give it 4 stars because I consider that 5 stars is perfection and this item is still improvable, i.e. screen and HDD. For all the rest it is perfect.

I've been using this U36SD-DH51 for the last couple weeks, and I love it. It is thin, light and fast. The battery life for regular stuff like web browsing, even with the screen brightness up, is about 7 hours (though I fully expect that to wane as the battery ages). The case and the keyboard feel solid, and typing is comfortable.

I replaced the stock hard drive with an Intel 520 Series 120 GB Solid-State Drive in about 20 minutes without any problems (search the web for "how to open an ASUS u36"). The laptop went from moderately fast to ludicrous speed.

I bought this laptop for the discrete graphics, so that I could test and debug CUDA software from the coffee shop instead of my office. The GT520M won't be winning any speed contests, but if you need NVidia graphics in a lightweight laptop, it's a great buy. If you don't need discrete graphics but want the speed of an SSD, then look for "ultrabooks" or their ilk -there are quite a few out now.

Best Deals for ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Black)

I got the equivalent U36SD-A1. I love the construction and speed of this computer. It is a little heavier than an Ultrabook or Macbook-air. But, you get the benefit of a fully powered i5 even running at 3.0GHz well ventilated. I think this is the way to go. The ultrabook doesn't make a lot of sense to me when it is only running at 1.7GHz. I can really run anything I want on this little dynamite with great response. It is even better after I put in a Sandy Force SSD.

Honest reviews on ASUS U36SD-DH51 13.3-Inch Thin and Light Laptop (Black)

I have previously owned an ASUS ultra thin and light notebook before this one, so I can personally say that I am very satisfied with their build quality. Build quality is top notch. However, this particular model U36S does not allow you to exchange hard drives easily because there are NO accessible compartment at the bottom!

I bought with a crappy 640GB drive and wanted to exchange it for an Intel 320 SSD, no luck. There are many user comments on the web stating the same problem.

I am too worried about the warranty and messing up the notebook to go thru the painful dissasembly. This is the only CON i can think of. Everything else is great.

This is still a 5 star product in my eye becuase of the great build quality.

The computer works really good. Had a few cosmetic flaws. I was afraid it was going to have a bunch of junk files and stuff left behind from someone else, but there was only extra programs. Some useful and some not. I was scared to buy it used at first, but now I'm glad I did and saved the extra money.

This is my first time buying a Mac, so I opted for a used Macbook with some decent specs. I am so impressed by this laptop. Even being 4 years old it doesn't give any impression that it lacks speed or capacity. I wouldn't dare buy a 4 year old PC, but this is becoming one of my favorite purchases. Love it.

Best Deals for Apple MacBook MB403LL/A -(White)

The computer was shipped promptly. It seemed just as it was described. Two days past the last day it could be returned, the hard drive died. So it ended up costing a lot more than the $400 I paid for it.

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook MB403LL/A -(White)

I bought my MacBook refurbished and am very happy with it. While I wish it had a bigger hard drive (mine has 160 GB) and more RAM (mine has 4 GB; I can add 2 more GB) it does a good job with most laptop tasks.

As of this writing, it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. This is subject to change.

There are times the fan kicks on and the laptop becomes really hot.

I have a great laptop stand for my MacBook by roadtools and it helps keep the heat away from me.

One minor point: Heat does radiate out of the bottom left corner. Plus there is a slightly sharp ridge around the MacBook's edge. I find this ridge slightly irritating to the skin of my wrists.

I wish Apple still had the MacBook in its lineup as it is a nice bridge between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.

Apple iBook Laptop G3 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB, DVD Reviews

Apple iBook Laptop G3 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB, DVD
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

To put it simply, Apple's new iBook is an engineering marvel. The design is sleek and elegant, yet the case can stand up to a good beating. The iBook comes with an awesome set of features--pretty much everything you might need is already part of the package, including FireWire, CD-RW drive, and 10/100 Ethernet. Despite having a relatively small screen (12.1" diagonal) compared to some PC laptops, it still supports a full 1024 x 768 resolution at millions of colors. The screen is very bright, and the battery, while not quite the 5-hour powerhouse that Apple advertises, still manages about three hours doing normal operations. The 500-MHz G3 processor is spritely and gets things done quickly, although it doesn't have quite enough power to do a large amount of movie editing or graphics work.

A few drawbacks are as follows:

The internal CD burner is only 8x at this time, which is markedly slower than the 16x and 20x external FireWire burners available now.

The iBook comes with only 128 mb of RAM, which is just barely enough for most things. I would strongly encourage upgrading to at least 256 mb total, as RAM is very inexpensive these days.

The video memory in the iBook is only 8 mb, with a weak graphics controller as compared to what goes into the G4 desktops. As such, the iBook is only mediocre at gaming.

The 10GB hard drive is already pre-loaded with almost 5GB of software and sample mp3's, so I would highly recommend upgrading to at least a 20 GB drive.

In conclusion, the iBook is a solid purchase for anyone who wants many of the features of a desktop machine, but in a portable package. The drawbacks listed above are mostly forgiveable, as sacrifices had to be made somewhere to make this such a reasonably-priced machine. The new iBook no longer has a built-in carrying handle, but Apple has managed to trim quite a bit of weight and bulk, making it a joy to use on a daily basis.

Apple has reinvented the iBook as one of the best laptops. Not just Mac, but in all of the PC world. The second generation of this version has a faster processor, a larger hard drive, and still looks great. People are drawn to look at this machine from the time you pull it from it's case. I would certainly recommend a RAM upgrade. 128 is okay, but it is just barely getting by. I'd suggest at least doubling that. Since the iBook only has one RAM slot, you may want to do that on ordering. However, you can get quality chips for less from other sources, and since it's a fairly simple install you can do it yourself in a few minutes.

I use my iBook as a webmaster with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop, and iMovie 2. My digital camera mounts as an external hard drive. My digital video camera links through the Firewire port with no fuss at all.

Overall, I would highly recommend the iBook.

Best Deals for Apple iBook Laptop G3 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB, DVD

Almost all of the SPECs on this baby are just what you want in a laptop -fast processor, just over 1 inch thick case, less than 5 pounds, 5-hour battery. In person, you won't believe how small and truly portable this machine is. It's great for reporters on the go such as myself, or for students in a dorm room. It has all the right ports, and appears to be made with quality in mind.

The screen is exceptionally bright as well.

My only two complaints: 1) The low-end model skimps horribly on the memory (for shame, Apple! They could have added another 64 MB). You can upgrade the memory easy enough aftermarket, but that's an annoyance (128MB is practically required for OS X, BTW).

2) The screen is a fairly miserly 12.1 inches, although it is active-matrix and high-resolution. Now, keep in mind that this contributes to the low-cost, svelte form factor and long battery life, but I wouldn't mine having a 13-14 inch screen when I'm squinting at text all day. I generally solve this problem by upping the size of the fonts, but still, this screen is rather small. If you buy one of the higher-end models, say the one with the DVD drive, you may find that watching a DVD on this small screen is not exactly the cinematic dream that you find on the amazing Titanium Powerbook G4 (with its glorious ultrawide 15.3" screen.)

Enjoy!

Honest reviews on Apple iBook Laptop G3 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB, DVD

First off, I think it is important to note that the rating I give the iBook is as a consumer portable. The iBook is NOT meant to replace a desktop machine. It is not designed, built or sold for heavy duty graphics, professional photo or video editing, or desktop publishing. The iBook IS designed to be very light weight, easy to use, and flexible. It is designed for the hobbiest, or consumer that wants the ability to edit their vacation pictures and videos, surf the internet, e-mail freinds and family, and generally do what any computer can do given the limitations that any portable will have.

The iBook comes with both OS9 and OSX pre installed. It also comes with a very usefull suite of productivity software that includes: 1. AppleWorks A suite of software that includes a more then competant word processor, A spread sheet, A data base, A presentation module and others. Basically a suite similar to Microsoft Office but not as robust and not costing 400-500 bucks. It also comes with iTunes, and excellent software for listening to and burning your MP3's. For those creative people it also comes with iMovie, the best consumer video editing softer available bar none. Also software listed is also OSX compatible (though it may require software updates.

Now that OSX version 10.1 is becoming available (I just upgraded my iBook to 10.1 today), OSX is a very viable every day OS. 10.1 adds an excellent DVD player and enhanced performance, however as any totally new OS, it will take some time for some software to migrate. It is also an exceptionally stable operating system. In the three plus months that I've had my iBook, I can honestly say that the operating system (OSX) has never crashed on me. I have ofcourse had applications crash, but I've never had to restart.

Yes, the lack of a 100Mhz+ front side bus might be considered a short coming by some, however for the average home user that does not do heavy duty video editing or other extremely demanding applications on a regular basis they will rarely if ever notice this. Another short coming some may consider is the lack of a PC slot or docking capabilities. However, with two USB ports, one FireWire port, VGA port (and cable included), built in 10/100 ethernet and a built in 56k modem I'm hard pressed to think what I would need them for. As for that reviewer that warned anyone from buying an Apple product due to their support all I can say is I've been using Macs for 8 years now. I've never had one of my computers in the shop for any reason. I suppose there is always that possibility of a lemmon. I have probably called Apples support line 4-5 times in that eight years and they have always been able to fix any problem I had while I was on the phone with them.

In short, while your millage may vary, in the 3-4 months that I've had my iBook I have had absolutely no problems with it and can recommend it whole heartedly with a clear conscience.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Apple iBook Laptop G3 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB, DVD

I bought a 500 MHz ibook.

While it's true that the 10 GB model does fill up rather quickly be realistic a laptop is a toy, unless you're truly using it as a total desktop replacement. I actually do more of my daily work on my ibook now than my regular Pentium 4 station and that's a good thing. My ibook rocks.. now I just need an ipod. Granted, you will need to up the ram. I'm maxing mine out at 640 MB. I read one reviewer saying it was hard to exchange files between PC's & Macs... but exchanging files between pc & mac platforms isn't hard. Some programs haven't come to mac yet, but I seem to like the programs that mac has better for example, itunes rules...

Anyway, I'm not gonna ramble anymore just face the facts. Apple builds an excellent laptop (it's really eye-catching, and sturdy), and when you compare the two, there's no reason to get a PC laptop, in my view (though tons of people still do). :)

Very pleased with the design (probably an intellectual property violation of Apple's Macbook Air design!). Performance with 256GB SSD is blazing. The screen is amazingly bright and sharp. I compared it to my business partner's MacBook Air, and the Asus is MUCH brighter. Great for my aging eyes! The speaker sound is a bit low on volume. The most significant issue I have is the sensitivity of the touch pad. I noted that others identified this issue with other UX31s. I have never experienced this with any previous notebook computer. If you so much as touch in the slightest way the large touchpad while typing, large swathes of text will be highlighted and, upon the next key stroke, erased. I have used my undo key to correct this more times than I like to remember. Hopefully, there is a software update that corrects the problem. Other than this, I am pleased. Best notebook I have ever had, even with the concerns I expressed.

Pros:

Almost everything, this is by far the best laptop I have yet to encounter. Its resolution and blazing speed (with the i7 Ivybridge processor and Solid State Hard Drive) excede any needs I have (word processing, watching videos, and Adobe Photoshop CS6). It's battery life is fairly good for an Ultrabook, especially with the excellent (and even) screen brightness. The USB 3.0 Ports are great to have, though on rare occasions more than two would be preferred.

Cons:

My only minor criticisms are its non-upgradable RAM and some keyboard issues.

In regards to its 4GB of RAM, 4GB is decent but isn't as much as I would prefer these days(though with its size, up-gradable components might just not be feasible).

Unfortunately, the first laptop I received had a malfunctioning On/Off button (which is part of the keyboard), that stopped working after about a week. The computer was promptly exchanged though, and this computer has not had that particular issue. Though, it should be noted that on occasion certain keys stop working (especially the backspace key) and I find lifting the computer, and sometimes lightly shaking it seems to help. This suggests to me that the keyboard attachment to the logic board occasionally comes slightly unseated. Based on a past Asus laptop I've owned, and these two additional Asus computers having this issue, it appears to me that Asus computers might be prone to such keyboard issues, but the pros far outweigh this minor inconvenience, to me. Further, I'm sure I could exchange it for a third computer, but it isn't worth the hassle.

UPDATE: The keyboard issue has gotten frustrating enough that I'm going to try sending it in again... apparently this is a common problem:

I apologize to Amazon that I didn't buy this on Amazon. I kept watching for an model with 8G of memory but Amazon only has the 4G one listed. So, I ended up ordering it directly from Lenovo to get a true Ultimate with 8G memory, 256G SSD, and the port replicator. I just can't see buying a computer in 2012 that has less than 8G of memory. I wanted more but I also wanted the exceptionally slim form factor.

Immediately after it was unpacked I was impressed with the quality of the build. It is incredibly thin. The keyboard has to be the best Chicklet keyboard I have used. The layout of the keys is very well done, and they are crisp.

I have been using it now for 3 weeks. This is by far the best machine I have ever owned or used. It blows the socks off a friends laptop (hint... it is silver).

The only negatives that I have found (which exist on every other machine I looked at)

* The screen is a little too bright for me so I lowered the brightness and it is still crisp. The high resolution results in everything being smaller than my previous ThinkPad but that is easily adjusted.

* I wish both of the USB ports were 3.0

* It needs a hot key to disable the trackpad. I occasionally let my thumb touch it while typing and the cursor will be moved.

* The USB 3.0 port replicator is interesting, but I do miss just being able to drop a machine into a dock and everything including power is hooked up immediately. But its a luxury that Ultrabooks don't have.

* It would be nice if Lenovo offered some upgrade to Windows 8 when it is released, but I really have no plans for going to Windows 8 in the near term so this isn't a big issue.

Very happy with this purchase!

I waited a long time for this product. Lenovo (once again) delayed its shipping date for a long time, and finally shipped without the Ethernet dongle and the 3G chip. Prior to receiving my laptop (i7, 4gb ram, 256gb ssd configuration) I heard many problems about the laptop on top of the delayed shipping, including a rattly and loose trackpad, terrible battery life, and excessively bulky charger.

I haven't found any of these to be true, and I am pleasantly surprised! The charger is not that bulky, it appear normal, and when I compared it with an ultra-slim charger (not made by Lenovo, bought from an outside source) they weren't all that different in terms of weight and size.

The battery life has been around 3-6 hours depending on my usage, and I always have a lot of tabs open, I'm always using the internet, and I usually have Pandora open in the background. I run programming tasks, use Solidworks, and do a lot of stuff with it, and even under heavy use it lasts for a good 3-4 hours. Lenovo also has some nifty ways to extend battery life.

I don't use the trackpad much, since I love the trackpoint, but it seems totally fine, no looseness yet...

However, there was a lot of preloaded bloatware, and I uninstalled most of it, including the Lenovo Power Manager because it wasn't very useful and it stopped working after a week.

Despite its faults, I can't help but give it 5 stars for its amazing lightness, the screen quality (not sure why people didn't like it, maybe my eyes are just too bad to notice the pixels!), and its battery life and slimness. Not the most powerful machine, but it serves my purposes PERFECTLY since I travel a lot and it doesn't feel like anything in my bag. Then again, I'm converting from an IBM Thinkpad T43, which weighed about 5.3lb for the same screen size.

I have been using laptops for 15 years and this is by far the best laptop ever. Thanks to the SSD and i7 everything runs and opens in nothing, this is the first time MS Office (excel, powerpoint) truly opens and runs fast. Keyboard is great and something I noticed from my prior lenovos is that this computer seems off all the time, I left it downloading updates all night and could not hear not the least hum from it. I was thinking on buying a Mac, but this laptop excels in everything. Great seller by the way, good communication and very open since I needed an invoice change. Thanks!

I love this laptop. It is very light, thin and fast. My only issue was with the track pad. More exactly the trackpad software. I have never had a problem with a trackpad before but this one gave me fits. I had to disable the "advanced" features that Lenovo incorporated in to it's software and now it is tolerable. I am still very happy that I bought the laptop, but I thought others should know about this issue.

The keyboard on this notebook is the highlight, it has great feedback, separated chicklet keys, and has standard key placement (unlike some funky keyboards I have tried recently). That is to say, delete in top right, escape top left and CTL bottom left, with arrow keys on the bottom right. Also, it doesn't have the rarely needed numeric keypad, which is found on a lot of keyboards these days but requires your hand placement left of expected to type, which is what you do most of the time anyhow, right? I like this keyboard better than those on the legendary Thinkpads of old.

The screen is nice and sharp, I don't dislike the shiny screen as much as I had originally expected. Colors are great.

Hard drive has enough space for me, and the recovery procedure works well. I made the recovery CDs as well, but I normally just clone the HD onto and old drive to have a backup that way.

The computer has nice selection of features, minus the HDMI that has been mentioned already.

I am very fond of the trackpad .. I grew up with IBMs and prefer the pointer stick, but this is the nicest trackpad I've ever used. Buttons are in the right places and are the right size.

Speakers are OK, better than many budget laptops. The recessed keyboard is a nice looking design and the textured case is also quite cool looking. This certainly doesn't look like a budget laptop.

There are a few negatives however. First, Sony loads a ridiculous amount of "junkware" on this computer. Trial versions of this and that, utilities of dubious importance, and a bunch of other junk I see no need for. I took me about 45 minutes to get rid most of the egregious stuff. The processor is 64 bit, and the Win7 version is 64 bit, which makes sense given the 4GB ram installed. The processor does not have the Intel virtualization technology, but frankly having used Sun's free and excellent Virtual Box software for some time, which doesn't need this virtualization technology, I see no need for Intel's hardware virtualization.

Also, the computer ain't a light weight although it isn't a complete pig either.

I also installed XP Professional for giggles, the drivers are all available on Sony's site. Man, it really flies with 32 bit XP.

All in all a very nice budget laptop.

Beware that this Sony Vaio DOES NOT HAVE the HDMI port as it's advertised on the pictures.

it's not a big issue for me for I woudn't use it anyway. However if you want this feature it might be a problem.

After 2 years it freezes for no reason esp. when on Youtube/Internet Explorer. Battery life is non-existant. Bought a replacement battery but it lasted 4 months. Time for a new laptop but doubt it will be a Sony. Too many bad reviews.

Just acquired mine not too long ago and tried to put the rpg diablo on the computer and the game at first would not work at all. I tweaked the system and got the game running but it took a long time to start then the graphics are shot. Don't know what else to say there but the laptop looks sharp and runs many other apps. I might have to look into alienware I guess..lol.

I already have two weeks with this laptop and have no complains. This laptops is perfect for the every day computing need, I ussually runs the Microsoft Office suite in it with no problems. Web Cam is ok but I don't use it too often. Hard Drive have enough space. Keyboard do not has the numpad and no backlit. Screen is really good with smooth resolution. In my opinion it needs a cuple more USB ports and of course HDMI port. Bottom line: is a good computer for the price.

I purchased this laptop when it was on sale for 399.99 on the Back to School promotion. Primarily if you are looking at this model you are interested in the 17.3" screen size at the cheapest price possible without moving down to the Pentium line. This laptop comes with the i3 3227U CPU which has 2 physical cores and 2 virtual cores with no support for dynamic overclocking (Turbo Boost) clocked at 1.9Ghz.

First, unless you can deal with the horrible load times I would suggest any SSD you can aquire such as Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE120BW. If you need more space for whatever reason you should get a cheap aftermarket 2.5" HD enclosure to supplement file storage. I would recommend just putting the HD that came with the laptop in this: SANOXY® 2.5" USB 2.0 SATA Hard Drive HDD Case Enclosure. Secondly this laptop only comes with 1 4GB DIMM, and you should purchase a cheap 4GB SODIMM DDR3 1600 CL11 module. This significanly increases performance esspecially if you are going to be doing any light gaming. Here is a suggestion Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Module CT51264BF160B but any 4GB DDR3 1600 CL11 SODIMM will work.

With the minor upgrades out of the way, we can take a look at this laptop. The screen measures 17.3" and is a TN panel 1600x900 which has the same flaws any TN panel would have (poor viewing angles). The hinges are very tight, you have to hold the base down to open the screen which is a good thing in my opinion. The laptop has a more solid feel than other sub 500 dollar models out there. This may be because of the textured plastic being thicker but it is noticable, the textured plastic prevents fingerprints and scratches.

Customers have access to the underside in which the WiFi, HDD, and Memory can be upgraded if needed. The laptop comes with 2 memory slots with one being populated. The keyboard is not backlit, but the keys seem to be between a macbook and older springy ones. I own a Retina MacBook Pro 15" and the keys are similar, so Dell has come a long way from an older Studio 15 (1557) model I had. Those keys would fall off easily and felt terrible to type on.

Comes with 4 USB ports 2 of which are USB3.0, the only cavet here is that they are not color coded. It is nigh impossible to tell other than the small icon above with SuperSpeed listed.

With the iGPU (Intel HD4000) you can play World of Warcraft on Medium settings at 1600x900 averaging 30fps. Turning off shadows, SSAO and using low particles, low water maxing out View distance, textures, etc. dramatically increases framerates. 60+ in 5 mans 40+/in capital cities. Torchlight & Torchlight II can be maxed out with the exception of shadows at native resolution. Diablo III does not perform that well for me, even at the lowest settings there are times when it will drop below 30fps.

The laptop never gets too hot to touch and even while running Intel Extreme Burning Utility or running loops of Heaven 2.0 it can sit comfortably in your lap.

Highs:

Good price for a 17" laptop with i3 (399.99)

Lows:

You should probably consider a SSD and memory upgrade.

Notes:

ALL gaming tests were done with 2 sticks of memory, with just single channel memory that the laptop shipped with you will probably not be satisfied with any games that these types of laptops usually play.

Amazon states that this is a 1366x768 screen which is incorrect, all 17" Inspirons ship with 1600x900 TN panels.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron 17 i17RV-818BLK 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black Matte

I am really impressed with the build quality of this Dell laptop. It has a very bright and clear screen and the keyboard and touch pad are very good. I added 4 GB of RAM to bring it up to 8 total and it speeds through most applications. It is not meant for any serious gaming and for the price, you should not expect that. I have owned two Dell desktops, but never a laptop. I figured for $399 and another $30 for the RAM, I'd give it a shot. I could not be happier with this computer and I recommend it highly.
