Not the best work computer. I'd say this computer is better for light-use and perhaps light game play. Not suited for photo editing, design, or development. Overall, its a great casual computer. Best for students and at-home use. I wouldn't recommend this computer for anyone looking for a work heavy system.

I bought this for my upcoming MSc in Machine Learning, which is a data science and programming course. I've owned and used many laptops over the last few years, including HP, Apple, and Dell, and to be honest nothing compares to this laptop.

It's a very slick and professional design, with a keyboard complete with all the standard keys you would find on a desktop keyboard, and it runs very quietly and efficiently (there isn't much noise from the cooling fan, which I am happy about, and the cooling fan runs efficiently and doesn't run erratically). The color is a matte black and the laptop looks great whether closed or open.

The trackpad, which is used to drag the cursor, is smooth and precise very good quality. One of my favorite things about the laptop is that the trackpad gives you the option of using a quick-tap function in order to left or right click more discreetly AND it has the buttons for those same functions for more precise clicking, which is slightly less quiet but still within reason. So you can click however you want. In addition to that, there is the "dot pad" in the middle of the keyboard for those who prefer to sometimes use that to drag the cursor.

The OS installed on it is Windows 7, but it is also full compatible with Linux (for those of you who are programmers), which is very useful for data processing, and it is also compatible and fit for using Unix. Windows 7 (pre-installed) comes with all kinds of Lenovo support programs, including an official Lenovo hardware scanning and health reporting program and many others. There's even an app store for Lenovo that, in my opinion, is even better than the app store for Apple. A free subscription to SugarCloud was also provided with 6 GB of free cloud storage than can sync to your other devices (mobile phones, tablets, etc). Other programs and essentials are provided, such as Skype. Microsoft Office is offered with a paid subscription (so no need to venture out and buy it yourself). Another program they provide with a free trial is something called Nitro Pro 8, which is a PDF formatting program MUCH better than Adobe and can be purchased from the application setup.

There are many other programs included that I don't have much time to write about but trust me it comes fully loaded with just about everything you need plus extras.

Overall, this laptop was certainly worth the money and should definitely be useful in my Machine Learning course this fall. Great buy A+++

It is a good work horse and does what it is supposed to do just fine. The processor is very fast and works well for the music production software I use.

I wanted windows 7 on my new computer but most companys only use the newest operating system which is windows 8. I am use to windows 7 and like it allot. The Lenovo Thinkpad is a very good grade business computer and works well with windows 7. The computer came with an anytime upgrade to Windows 8 if desired, nice touch.

In short, the computer is excellent and does what I need it to do with my business.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 68852BU 15.6" Notebook - Intel Core i5 2.60

Comfortable keyboard, but did take me a while to figure out how to right-click for copy and paste, as there is no right-click button you click on the lower right section of the touch pad. I usually use it with a mouse because I'm old school; just like the control of a mouse. The battery life when fully charged is not quite what it claimed. Usually 4 hours, not 5. But I didn't buy this to take everywhere, its just replacing an antique desktop. Came with 30 days of Microsoft Office 2013, which I liked, as I can't decide whether to get the office edition or home. Overall, happy with choice.

I just got it few days ago and love it. The guy runs so fast that even better than my other Sony i5. The HDMI turns my 70' LED TV into a giant screen, which is beautiful, as well as the video games. I definitely recommand this one, with such a great price.

I'm not really a "techie" kind of girl but I had a short list of my needs for a new laptop. After a little research I wanted at least an i5 Core Processor with Windows 7 and enough GBs and I didn't want to spend too much. I really like this Asus and found it more than meets my needs and for a fantastic price (in my opinion anyway). It was easy to uninstall anything I didn't want and then to set it up to my personal preferences, like setting power saving options and default programs, etc. Good set-up and fast right out of the box (after charging of course). I've had it for 5 months now and I'm still happy to use it every day, whereas my former laptop was a pain. Battery life is good and I'm happy with the keyboard too. Love my new Asus K53E Laptop.

Best Deals for ASUS K53E-BD4TD Laptop / Intel Core i5-2430M Processor / 15.6"

Have had this for about three months. The key board is nice, but the mouse pad has been having some problems being almost too sensitive to movement sometimes.

My main computer before was a netbook and while this much faster, I haven't been thrilled to carry it in a bag to and from work. But what I had before was less than 2 pounds so I did expect this.

Also, this has taken a few knocks and hasn't yet had a problem surviving them. So is great if you want to take it about places.

Not really brown. I received it and thought it was black. The matte finish does not get fingerprints.

3 UBS ports, HDMI, and what I think is a VGA, which will took up to a monitor.

It is a lot of computer for the price.

great screen, nice slim design, i had a glass of water beside my vaio and my cat knocked it over... the water went all over the keyboard. i immediately turned it off and used dry tissue to soak up what i could. i let it sit upside down for 2 hours and water was still slowly dripping out of the keys, and it still works like new! Bought for my wife and spent bit of time getting programs installed and getting her up to speed from XP to Windows 8, as it is a leap! I have almost this exact same set-up, except I have the i7-4900MQ, and the other difference is mine came with only the 1TB 54000 RPM Hard Drive. I added a 256GB mSATA SSD. But everything else is the same, so my system is:

HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad TouchSmart

* Windows 8 Pro 64

* 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4900MQ Processor

* NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory

* 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)

* 16GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

* 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive

* 256GB mSSD (mSATA)

* 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery

* Backlit Keyboard

* HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic

* 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)

The very first thing I did when receiving this was removing the back panel and installing the 256GB mSSD in the mSATA slot. You will need a M2.0x3mm screw since there is none supplied.

Next, I installed the battery and plugged in the power, and hooked up a usb DVD drive so I could install a fresh install of Windows 8 Professional 64-bit onto the mSSD. This is to not only cut boot times by 2/3rds but also to have a bloatware free OS and have the 1TB drive as a storage drive.

You want to enter your BIOS settings right away when you turn on the laptop and enable legacy boot, make sure the usb/external drive is first, and disable secure boot.

I was able to find all of the drivers needed from HP you will need to locate the fingerprint scanner software manually through HP.

With this set-up, my laptop boots from completely off to log on screen in 5 seconds.

So let me get down to the review of the actual laptop.

QUALITY: 5/5

This is a very solid, well built machine. Unlike some HP laptops I have encountered in the past, it looks like HP is really focusing on delivering a quality device. Because of this, I would not call this laptop lightweight, but at the same time it is not heavy. Solid is just the word that comes to my mind to describe it. It is also very thin and sleek looking, and the full keyboard and numpad exhibits very little flex, and all keys feel like they have some weight behind them. The trackpad is also quite nice. The only thing I found disturbing is that the power connection into the laptop is of the loose type, which means that much force is not needed to remove it it really can just slide out easily. I do wish there was some sort of groove to keep it completely in at all times, but I only found the cable popping halfway loose a few times so far.

DESIGN: 4/5

My biggest complaint is the use of a TN panel instead of an IPS panel. While the TN panel is bright, clear, and looks great on the Touchsmart version since it is glossy and has a nice glass bezel, the viewing angles are absolutely terrible. Since this is a laptop, this is not that big of a deal since you can tilt your display, however, you can only tilt the display back a short distance, as the design does not allow the screen to move back more than 120 degrees (estimate) from open. Another small complaint I have is that the F keys (F1, F2, etc) are not defaulted to F1, F2,and so on. They are defaulted to laptop specific functions like brightness, volume control, what have you. This is great for when you are just cruising around Windows 8, but if you are in a program or game that uses these buttons, you have to hold down the FN function. This is really hard to do while gaming. There might be an option to change this, but I have not looked in to it too much yet.

Other than those two issues, everything is laid out and works nicely. It is also a very quiet laptop, but then again I am also using the mSSD as the main OS drive.

GAMING: 4/5

If you are looking at this model, you most likely are looking to play games on it, or maybe use graphically intense software. The 740m is much more poweful than the integrated graphics, however, it is not that strong. On an old game like Mass Effect 1 with all settings high and resolution of 1080p, while it looked beautiful and the frame-rate seemed playable, there were times where there would be heavy freezing and lag. I think this laptop could play all older games at almost high settings and current games at medium at best. Another drawback is that the laptop gets pretty hot while using the 740m for a while not that long of a while though since battery life goes down quite a bit when using the dedicated card. But since I knew all of this beforehand and was getting this laptop for software development, being able to play some games was just an added bonus.

BATTERY LIFE: 5/5

These Haswell processors seem to use much less power, as I can go about 4-5 hours heavy use on a charge. Just checking emails/web browsing and keeping the screen brightness down, and turning off the keyboard backlight and some other non-essential things you can get 6-7. There is no way that I can see someone getting 9 hours as stated, at least not with the 4900MQ and 740M.

Overall, if you can get a good deal on this laptop, you have to jump. For the price I paid, there is no other company offering this blend of mobile power, solid build, and great design that you can find in this laptop.

EDIT 7/24/13

I forgot to mention, that the screen, since it is touch screen and with Windows 8, once you get the hang of it, you will be using your fingers for almost everything in the OS, is a huge fingerprint magnet. IF you are looking at something dark or gaming or watching a movie, you will see hundreds of finger smudges. This is to be expected, so just remember to pick up a screen wipe or something.

This is not a bad laptop. Fast, nice screen with decent contrast.

However, it came with the support partition defective and the first time I started it, it told me no boot disk available. After another restart it suddenly worked, but once in a while I still get the "no boot disk" error.

After 2 weeks of usage, the laptop touchscreen now started going crazy. I registers touches all the time if no one touches the screen. The cursor keeps jumping to the right end of the screen constantly. Makes it useless and it needs to go in for repair.

Another issue I have is that the screen cannot be opened far enough, so it is hard to use when you stand in front of it. The keyboard is fairly soft and flexing.

This laptop is fast! I really like how quickly it can boot, or wake up from sleeping, and the finger print security is neat. I'm still getting used to Windows 8, but I'm starting to figure out how to work around it.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC (Silver);

This machine is fast, works well as a laptop or when running my monitor as a desktop replacement.

When there was a problem with the solid state drive caused, as we eventually realized, by a program I added, those who assembled and shipped it responded quickly, helpfully, replaced the drive and offered full support in replacing it. It has worked perfectly ever since. I would not hesitate buying any product they put together or recommend. ted

I bought this laptop because the great specs and the arguably low price. I'm using it mainly for software development and casual gaming.

Regarding performance, it's perfect, everything as I expected.

The sound quality it's over my expectations. It's much better than any other laptop I have used.

From my point of view, the two most important things a customer should know before buying this item are:

1. The keyboard has some flex, and in general the material of the external components appears not to be the best. This is OK for me given the price.

2. Because it has two graphic cards using nvidia optimus technology, and the nvidia card it's relatively new, it's very difficult to make Ubuntu work on it. The only solution I found was using Ubuntu 13.10 *alpha*, which it's the first with initial support for nvidia optimus via the nvidia-prime package. Needless to say that using an alpha OS it's not recommended given that it's still in early development and will have many bugs. Anyway, in my case the only annoying bug I'm having is [1].

In summary. The laptop it's great, it is what I expected except for the Ubuntu experience, which is technically not HP fault.

I purchased this notebook so I could have something to sit around in the living room, coffee shop and/or occasional work trip. I am generally a MAC person, but this computer has worked pretty well for me, since I sometimes want to use a PC and my work uses PC's.

If you don't want an iPad, do want a "real" keyboard, but also think that netbooks are too small (especially the keyboard) and limited (smaller hard drive), then this is a good size. It's thin enough to slip in a back pack or carry on, and still enjoy a vivid screen, yet not so big as a 17 inch screen, that it should be considered a desktop.

Since I am a writer (at home and work), I like the "regular" sized keyboard, although the touch "mouse" pad is too close to the space bar that sometimes my thumb hits it and moves the cursor.

The computer boots up pretty quick, and if it sleeps or the battery looses power, it seems to restore it self pretty quickly, which I like very much.

Since I am a MAC person, there are several things I don't like about running MS products, including: OUTLOOK DID NOT COME WITH THE VERSION OF MS "OFFICE" THAT I BOUGHT (but then I just downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and am just fine not paying more to MS thank you very much). It is especially annoying that Outlook does not come with the computer, since such a solid email/calendar program come standard with a MAC. Also, there are way more software notifications and "reminders" that constantly pop up that are annoying.

I do like the way Windows now organizes "Libraries" of "Documents," "Pictures," etc., very much like a MAC (no doubt, that's where MS got the idea).

My notebook had an HDMI output, which is great when you want to hook it up to a TV at home or at a hotel on a business trip, if your hotel has a HD tv with HDMI. This latter feature is great, since that means you can watch Netflix in your hotel room on the road.

The wifi works great. It was pretty easy to get it up and running for web surfing at home and in coffee shops.

There's more I like, but the size and functionality have been great: Not to big, not to small, great screen, plenty of HD space for general purposes, plenty of speed for skype etc., just very pleased.

HP generally puts out some very nice products. This G62 is very fast, and I love Win7 over Vista.

BUT... and a BIG BUT...

There are new keys added to the left side of the keyboard... application keys... say you use CTRL a lot... your little finger automatically reaches for the furthests most bottom left key.. you hit it without out looking (like most good typists)...

BOOM, the Calculator pops up!!! Who the heck put THAT button there?

Same w/ CAPS LOCK... and TAB... and Shift etc. The only standard location key they left alone is the ESC key. Personally, I use CTRL and CAPS and TAB a whole heck of a lot more than the ESC key.

Nice response to the keyboard, nice monitor, fast processor, lovely Win7

BUT DANG, who was the non-genius who put those new keys on the far left hand side??

My suggestion: Find a different HP (or other) laptop, where the keyboard is standard.

I loved the look of this machine out of the box. It's thin, with a very large screen.

Pros: Huge Screen, designer case, fast cpu(ranked in top 30 for notebooks), graphics card(ati! 1GB of gddr3 ram!), good support from hp, 2 speakers w/sub,

hd audio,hdmi out, good screen resolution(1600x900), full keyboard, 500GB Hard drive, 4GB of ram.

It can run todays computer games very well. Applications open very fast. Very good integrated mic is very sensitive and can pick up anything.

Cons: low battery life, heavy, bloatware, glossy screen and chrome touchpad.

The battery life is way to low to really consider this machine something you would use on trips or flights over 2 hours long without plug

available. I also didnt think that laptops could be heavy untill I carried this laptop around the University of Texas campus. The glossy screen

reflects everything and anything making it hard to see the screen outdoors or near a window with bright light coming through. The chrome touch pad

is not as good as a plain jane plastic touchpad in that when you drag you finger, there is a little too much resistance for my liking( a little less

friction than rubbing your finger across the bottom of a shoe, unless your fingers are free of any residue, ie oils., then its smooth).

Overall this machine is a great laptop allowing me to keep my desktop off now since I purchased it. Even though my desktop is a high end gamming rig, this laptop has essentially replaced it. That being said, there are probably those of you who will not want to lug it around where ever you go. If you do, do purchase a laptop backpack as a brief case design even with one with a strap would tear into your shoulders. The battery life is annoyingly low, but is expected from a laptop with a large screen and discrete graphics card. If you want more battery life choose a laptop that has integrated graphics, but performance will be much lower. The only laptop out there that I have seen with performance and big screen, with an 8 hour battery life is a $3000 mac! Vista is no isssue here as the machine is perfectly capable of running it flawlessly. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ERRORS OR BLUESCREENS!!!!! The user who rated this machine with 1 star messed up his machine him self. He is obviosly a novice user. You only get bluescreens on computers due to user errors 99.999% of the time. I have had no issues at all with this notebook.

I ordered 2 of these laptops for my wife and I. The laptops came packaged very good, with no defects, and were delivered the next day after the order was placed. Both screens had no dead pixels what so ever and were perfect. All extra ports(useb, hdmi, ect) do not get in the way of each other. The laptops came with the hp mini-media remote, ac adapters, user guides, and pollishing cloths. Setup is a breese with HP's setup program. Do note that HP Games from wild tangent is much like a video game arcade, where you purchase tokens to play the games. 500 tokens a month for 6.99 per month. All antivirus software and office software is a trial version. I recommend unistalling the trial versions of office, hp wild tangent games(the games are not free!!!), norton(horrible, bloated, antivirus software), and the sling box software(uselesss without a slingbox for your tv). Free antivirus programs are out there.

I am giving it only 4 out of 5 due to the battery life. Otherwise you will not be disappointed. PC PitStop is a website that benchmarks computers, it ranked my system among laptops in the top 9% in the world, graphics got the top 3%.

Windows Vista Performance Index Ratings:

Processor: 5.2

Memory(RAM): 5.9

Graphics: 5.9

Gaming Graphics: 5.6

I researched multiple computers from several brand names and settled on this one. It came loaded up nicely and the price was very reasonable. Overall, I've had it almost a month and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't begun to explore all that it can and will do. No problems and it has been a pleasure to this point. I also took advantage of the Amazon account and got 0% interest... and apparently no payments (until the offer end date).

The computer itself is good. finger print shows easily. If you are looking to install engineering programs on it it is better off buy the HP Pavilion Dv7-2270us because it got the 7200 rpm HD. As for Amazon Company, it is one of the best to deal with. I sent an e-mail to the customer service and explain the problem with this model # (it has the 5400 rpm HD). Amazon issued a full refund including return shipment fees. Thank you Amazon for your service.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop

Great Laptop Performance. Fast for all entertainment needs. Huge and fast hard-drive and good monitor resolution. The webcam's capturing capabilities are not as neat as in other HP's models but still works great with all Instant Messaging and VOIP networks as MSN and Skype.

Great graphic imprint. The downside for the finished materials look is that this plastic is in particular too shiny and has to be cleaned constantly to avoid smudgy appearance.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop

First, let me qualify by saying 1) My experience with the HP Pavilion dv7 might be a fluke, and 2) Amazon doesn't seem to sell my exact model number, so I'm injecting the review here, because HP deserves it. My specific laptop is closely related to the one advertised on this page.

Normally, I don't write a review at all, if the product really sucks my experience might be a fluke, or if it's a book I might have misunderstood the intent. But this laptop has been such an inconvenience, that a bad review seems like real justice.

The battery is too heavy & bulky. The laptop had to be sent back several times; the first time, they 'fixed' the motherboard, the third time they had to replace the motherboard. It still has problems if you try to work with only the battery (i.e., the A/C disconnected), you risk the laptop suddenly shutting down even when the battery is fully charged.

There are other problems as well, and frankly the memories of wasted hours are too painful to drudge up.

I can't say great things about HP support, either. Oh sure, they try to resolve things, they aren't impolite or anything (although sometimes the accent gets in the way, so who knows if they are polite or not). But there's just too much back and forth, for many problems that you end up resolving with Google searches in an eighth of the time.

One great benefit this laptop will give you it will train you to backup your computer fairly frequently (I use Acronis for backing up & restoring, and it's a godsend), because you never know when you will have to send it back to the shop.

It was a bad mistake, choosing an HP laptop based on the look and feel of the keyboard, especially when past experiences with Toshiba have always been positive.

Try another HP series; steer clear of the dv7's.

First, didn't get this on Amazon. The Envy has been a wish list item for me for quite a while but way out of my low end price range. Until Groupon offered refurbished dv 7 7333 for my kind of price. I've had it a little over a month now and it's my favorite computer ever.

Like many, I'm on a slow learning curve with Windows 8. Some things I've figured out easily, others I'm waiting till I feel like looking through the Kindle book about 8 that I downloaded a while back.

Love the keyboard -I typed 120 wpm on old-fashioned Selectric typewriters and I struggle with all computer keyboards because you just can't go that fast. But this keyboard has a nice feel and I do better with it than with most.

It's fast and everything that I've tried works well. Haven't gotten into streaming so far so that remains to be seen. Videos show up nicely although in full screen with such a large screen sometimes they're a little blurry here even though they're clear on my tablet.

I'm not crazy about the "mouse" on any laptop so I've connected a separate one -but I've found the one on board easier to use than others I've tried.

I mainly use the computer for word processing, and browsing/e-mail stuff so this is probably more fire power than I need but everything just works better on this than on my many old computers (my first was a 1987 no-hard-drive Mac) and I love it.

I'm a somewhat advanced computer user and had been looking at laptops for a while before buying the Acer AS5742Z-4685. I dug into all of the specs of about 6 different models and zeroed in on this one as the best value. The price point was above the $300 I spent on our 'family' laptop a year ago, but I'm glad I spent the extra $100 (check out some of the private sellers' prices).

Pros: Crystal-clear LED screen, fast computing, great multi-tasking, not too much crap-ware pre-installed, lightweight, and easy-to-use keyboard

Cons: Battery life is good, but not great; price point is a bit high if you're willing to wait for Black Friday or Gold Box deals... which I obviously wasn't)

Overall, this laptop is a good buy in the $500 range, a great value at the $400 level, and--if it ever goes on sale in the $300 to 350 range--don't miss your chance to buy it!

Bought this laptop for about $450, free expedited shipping from Warehouse Sur+ (Amazon seller). Arrived late due to FedEx, not the fault of Amazon, Warehouse Sur+ or Acer, of course. It was double boxed for shipping, arrived in excellent condition.

Excellent finish which makes smudges hard to see. Screen is nice and big, crystal clear. We have 4 Acer monitors and all work very well. Not a single issue with them and two are several years old, so we were pretty sure Acer would make a good laptop as well.

The laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium but no DVD for it so you can't reinstall easily. The key code for it is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, so if you get an OEM Windows 7 DVD that key should work to reinstall Windows 7. It also comes with some craplets, but you might be interested in McAfee's antivirus (we weren't, we use Microsofts Security Essentials, free download from MS with an authenticated Windows system).

We reformatted the hard drive into multiple partitions and installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate (we use BitLocker drive data encryption for data on the laptop and on the USB drives). The reformat and reinstall worked just fine (and no craplets!). Since there is no disk with the system, there were a lot of missing drivers (for the network card, wireless device, several Intel drivers, the camera, etc). All were easy to find at the Acer web site (get them beforehand, unless you have another computer to download with).

Once we added the network driver, we could instantly see the local network computers and printers, and internet. Once that was found, we went to Microsoft Updates and that seemed to find most the other drivers for updating, including the video card drivers. The Acer website for the AS5742Z lists drivers for both AMD video cards and nVidia, although you probably don't want or need both, and they are large files. The Microsoft Update website detected and installed the appropriate video driver, which makes life a lot easier.

If you decide you want to install Windows XP (we tried just to check if it works) it does run fine, although we did have to go into the BIOS at bootup and change the SATA setting to IDE. The default value crashes XP during installation. That's a minor issue, since Windows 7 is so much better anyway. If you use the normal 32 bit XP, you won't use all of the 4GB of ram; you need the 64 bit operating systems to do that, which is why Acer provides the Windows 7 64 bit version.

The laptop has 3 USB ports, two on the right side, one on the left. We put USB thumbnail drives into them all to test them and had no issues. We tried the wireless network, it was fine. We also connected to our 10/100/1000 wired network, and the laptop transferred a large file at the full 1Gbps speed. We then tried a wireless modem from Verizon, and it also worked as expected.

The keyboard is very nice for a laptop. The mouse pad on the laptop is ok, but we prefer a normal mouse. We put in a USB mouse made by Roswell (a cheapo one for $4) and it worked right away. The 4GB of RAM were fully accessible, thanks to the 64 bit operating system (both on the OEM version it came with and our own Win7 64 Ultimate).

The only thing we will get for it is a car charger. We have a standard laptop briefcase, it fits into that fine.

Overall, we are delighted with this laptop and expect to buy another one in a few months.

This is an amazing laptop. Screen is crystal clear and very bright. The top cover and spots where your wrist sit have a nice texture to them making fingerprints and smudges hard to see. The p6100 is a great budget processor. This beats down the similar price athlon II mobile processors and seems to be ahead of the old core 2's in benchmarks. The Battery life seems to be about 3.2hours while browsing the net and working with outlook and word. Keys have a great feel and the way it is designed, you really cant get food or other small objects caught under them. This laptop does have 3 usb, 1 on the left and 2 on the right.

Highly recommended!

Honest reviews on Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)

I bought the HP G62-340US last week but returned it when I saw this Acer Aspire with 1 more GB of RAM for only $20 more at an office superstore. I am a typical home user who uses the laptop primarily for photos, web browsing, some word processing and filing taxes. Wow, I am impressed by this laptop. I especially love the number key pad on the right hand side. That's a luxury that I never had with any of my previous laptops. The keyboard is also very nice with full-size keys that did not require too much force to register. Unlike other reviewers, I did not have any ergonomic issues with the off-center touchpad. Installed Internet Explorer worked seamlessly. I was also able to download Google Chrome as an alternative web browser. So far, no complaints with this value-priced Acer Aspire.

Two things annoyed me about this laptop once I bought it (new) and started using it. One was that the CD/DVD drive was extremely flimsy, and the other was that the fan for the motherboard was constantly turning on and off, on and off for no reason, and was very loud. The former problem I decided I could live with, the latter I decided I could not. I did some research and found that many others had had the same problem with this laptop and had written that the problem could be solved by flashing the BIOS. Well, of course, I thought a laptop was supposed to work right if it's brand new, but anyway I contacted tech support and they told me which BIOS file to download, which I did, and I flashed the BIOS. It seemed to make the fan better. However, a few days later, I was watching a video on YouTube, and BAM, the computer froze and the motherboard started making a loud, repetitive clicking sound. I restarted it and tried to watch the video again and it did the same thing. I have never seen that happen to any computer, new or old. I cannot recommend buying this laptop. Go for another brand.

perfectly as descript except for the battery life which was advertised to last for 11 hour but lasted for 6-8 hours went doing little tasks like reading; while browsing on 3g gives me only but 4 hours on the average which is kind of disappointing bcos I use internet a lot on the go.

will like an extra usb 4 wireless usb mouse.

it is compact and feels solid and well packed; for those who cares for weight, it is not as light as u might expect compare to Samsung series 9 and Acer s 3 & 7 ultrabooks.

overall, I'm very satisfied with this product.

This is a great little laptop. It's very lightweight, doesn't get hot (it's been on for about 6 hours straight now), and the display is gorgeous. The widescreen display is great for watching movies and definitely gives the laptop a more "modern" feel. The speakers are OK..they can get pretty loud, but the sound quality isn't the best (rare for Sony!) -but it is a laptop, after all. The chiclet keyboard is different than what I have had in the past, but it is very easy to get used to and makes for quick and error-free typing. The laptop comes with Microsoft Office starter which includes limited functionality Microsoft Word and Excel..no, it doesn't have all the features of the full version, but it's nothing the average user will miss.

Windows 7 is infinitely better than Vista; you can disable a lot of those annoying things Vista didn't allow you to do (such as asking for your password each time upon start-up). When I just got my laptop, I had 261 gigs free of 287; regarding memory: I only have chrome open, and my computer is using up about 40% of its memory.

One qualm against Amazon rather than Sony: the laptop isn't just "white" as the description states -only the keyboard/mouse area is actually white...the cover, the frame around the screen, and the speaker area are actually a very light silvery color (still very pretty). The bottom is, of course, black. I think Sony does have an all-white version (coconut white) but I've only seen it sold directly from their website.

I have had this laptop for almost a year and I am modifying my review because both of the USB 3.0 ports have stopped working. One is physically broken. The other one just stopped working. I'm not sure what is wrong with it because Windows shows the USBs as all working correctly. Driver and BIOS updates have done nothing. Unfortunately, the ports are soldered to the motherboard and I'm much too risk averse to attempt a repair. I'm now down to 1 USB 2.0 port. In all my years of using PCs, I have never had USB problems like this.

To make matters worse, Toshiba doesn't supply the motherboard schematics. I have experience fixing laptops, so when these issues started I called them to see if they had any technical manual available so that I could see how the USB ports are connected to the motherboard (if it was connected via a USB board I could have repaired it myself). I was told they don't provide that information and I would have to contact a local service provider. None of the ones I contacted knew what I was talking about. The only reason that I learned that the USB ports are soldered to the motherboard is because someone is selling an S875 motherboard on Ebay and included pictures with their auction.

I have had this unit for 6 months and so far it has been great. I work from home and this laptop is able to handle lots of memory intensive jobs with ease. I have no complaints about performance. I do a lot of work where I need to have multiple screens open and this laptop is great for that. Battery life is good, I get over 3.5 hours, doing basic web surfing. Since I use this primarily at home, I typically don't use it on battery power.

I got this computer because it had a lot of features compared to similarly priced units, including a Blu-Ray drive. Be aware that for BD-J titles, the mouse doesn't work. I learned this the hard way when I purchased "The Avengers" on Blu-Ray and I couldn't figure out how to make it play. (Just use the arrow and Enter keys). This model had a lot of RAM and hard drive space compared to other models that I looked at.

The laptop is wide and because the power cord plugs into the left side, it add a couple more inches of width to the unit. I do wish the power cord plugged into the back. Another quibble is that the card reader is located on the front right side of the laptop, which would not be a problem except for the fact that cards do not go flush inside the reader. Once inserted, they stick out about a half of an inch. A couple of times, while wearing long sleeved shirts, my sleeves have caught on the card. There are admittedly minor issues, but my actual rating would have been a 4.5 if that was an option.
