I've had my Series 9 for about a week now and I figured I'd give it a review. The Series 9 is probably one of the best looking laptops I've ever seen. The build quality is excellent and it definitely feels sturdy. It's very lightweight but it doesn't feel like it's going to break if you handle it too rough. The screen hinge is easy to move, but it's tight enough that it doesn't fall back on it's own. The screen is gorgeous! It may be the best looking laptop screen I've ever seen. It's sharp and the colors just pop. Viewing angles are unreal on the Series 9! You can see the screen perfectly from almost any angle! The Series 9 comes with Windows 8 and I'll admit it took me some getting used to, especially since this laptop is not touch screen. It boots extremely fast and resumes even faster from sleep. I haven't done anything too extreme on it other than web surfing and some compiling, but the i7-3537U processor feels like it can handle most things I throw at it. I'm pretty happy with the keyboard and the track pad works quite well actually. In fact, I prefer it over the track pad on the Series 7 I used to own. Now onto my complaints... My particular unit had a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. It almost looks like a speck of dust, however I find myself looking at it quite often when I'm displaying a white background. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a dead pixel(s), but considering this laptop cost me $1400 and the dead pixel is right in the middle, I find it unacceptable. The other issue I found with the screen is there is light bleeding on the bottom left of the screen. It's not a huge deal, however it is very noticeable when watching movies where there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. I know, screen bleeding can be common on LCD panels, however it is another defect I would rather not have on such an expensive laptop. I was a little disappointed with the battery life as I seemed to get 5-6 hours surfing the web with the screen brightness set to medium. I was hoping for closer to 9 hours, but 5-6 hours is pretty acceptable in my opinion. There is a lot of bloatware installed on the Laptop. Some people will not mind it, but I had a Windows 8 pro disk I got from school, so I performed a clean install on the laptop. BTW, that process was very easy. After installing Windows, I downloaded Samsung's Software update Utility, and I was able to pick and choose the drivers and factory software I wanted to install on the laptop. After a clean install I was able to free up the SSD to over 100GB. My only other complaint is that the Ram is not upgradable and I would expect a larger SSD (preferably 256GB) for $1400. I actually just exchanged my laptop for another one through Amazon.com because of the screen issues. Fingers crossed it will have a flawless screen!

Pros:

-Beautiful design and build quality is very nice.

-Gorgeous Full HD display with excellent viewing angels. One of the best looking screens on a laptop I've ever seen.

-Great performance. Boots up and shuts down fast! The i7-3537U has excellent power for this class of laptop.

-I found the keyboard and track pad to work very well and was comfortable to use. I love that the keyboard is backlit!

Cons:

-My unit had a dead pixel and screen bleeding. Hopefully these are not common issues with these models.

-Battery life is acceptable but not great, (Around 5-6 hours of web surfing)

-There is a lot of bloatware and Samsung Apps. (Easily uninstalled however)

-RAM is not upgradable and I would expect more RAM and a larger SSD for $1400.

Final Thoughts:

Honestly, besides the screen issues I ran into, this is the best laptop I've owned. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to spend $1400 on a laptop. It looks great, performance is excellent, and it's one of the lightest/thinnest laptops you can find on the market.

UPDATE!! (4/19/13)

I received my replacement Series 9 this morning! (Yes, I entered an exchange into Amazon.com yesterday, they processed it, shipped a replacement, and I received it the next day! Fantastic customer service!) This model doesn't have any screen issues! There is no back light bleeding and no dead pixels! Everything looks great on this unit and I'm very happy with my purchase! Changing my rating to 5 stars :-)

UPDATE!! (4/20/13)

Just thought I'd mention that my first Series 9 laptop had a LITEON LMT-128M6M SSD. My replacement unit has a Samsung MZMTD128HAFV-000 SSD. Interesting!

The initial round of this laptop is temperamental. It was fantastic until a little over a week ago. The keyboard illumination started sticking to 'off' no matter what. The display brightness did weird things and then went all retro-manual on me, and the wifi started dropping every few minutes. What it seems like (to me) is a short manifested somewhere.

Until the above happened I loved it. If they're on a three month production cycle maybe these issues will be addressed in July, 2013.

Read below for my opinion -sans issues-

-

Four Stars!

I can tell you it' thin, it's light, it's fast, it's beautiful, tough-seeming, and the keyboard action is a tiny bit 'hard stop' at the end.

What I was looking for:

I purchased this laptop as a 'traveling dev' machine. I write software for a living, and having something I can easily throw in a small backpack/shoulder-bag. Total Pixel Count is important to me (I've had 1920x1200 display laptops since 2002). (I didn't want to purchase a Macbook Air in-part because reviews suggest the machine is under-powered).

I wanted a machine that performed well, was portable, not hideous, had a back lit keyboard, relatively light (4-5lb range would have been fine) and had a minimum 1080p resolution. After using a new Dell work laptop with 5+ hour battery life I was also mildly interested in a long running laptop.

When it landed it came with about 1/2 charge.

First Impressions:

It's very thin. It's very light. (Lighter than my Asus Prime tablet+keyboard by a large margin) Performance is excellent. If it weren't made of some suspiciously rugged feeling material I'd be afraid to put it anywhere but on a shelf. It's that thin.

Bootup is quick and windows is responsive.

Windows 8 is good looking and clearly touch oriented. My fingers went to the display more than once. (which is kind of a bummer since the screen isn't a touchscreen) There are some minor annoyances to windows 8 (how does one close an 'app' style program?) but by and large I get the impression it's as good as 7 *on top*

The display is beautiful with a matte finish that keeps away glare. I haven't done anything that would push it (I did pull up a hulu video full screen and it had no problems at all).

The keyboard is a nice chicklet-style keyboard, but the 'end' of the stroke is not quite as refined as I'd like, but that's my only complaint about the keyboard.

The trackpad is very nice and uses 'phone style' gestures for scrolling *flick up* takes you down. Personally I think this is a recipe for carpal palm, but what do I know? Other than the 'flick up' it's the nicest laptop trackpad I've used on a Windows machine.

After a couple weeks:

I love being able to put it to sleep, open the hinge and have it come alive.

Synaptics gestures on the trackpad are fantastic.

Windows 8 gestures are less fantastic but otherwise it's not much different from 7. Why are people complaining? If you know the app you want, just start typing! Luddites!

Auto screen brightness and keyboard illumination are very good but not flawless.

The speakers are optimized for having this machine on a hard surface but work well if they're not covered up by one's thighs.

I wish there was a very thin layer of rubber under the keys so end of travel wasn't quite so 'hard stop'.

Concerns and Annoyances:

* I mentioned keyboard action. I'll either get used to it or not. It'll probably be fine.

* Hardware controls. After using Dell machines for a decade now I really like having access to screen brightness and all those other little *Fn* keys without needing the operating system (on a dell they work through the bios, not windows). This means if I were to switch to windows 7 I'd have to make sure I had all the drivers. If I switched to Linux? S.O.L. Too bad, as this would make an extremely sexy debian box. This problem is a theme with Samsung. I don't know why they do it that way. Serious design flaw IMO.

* Lack of ports but what are you going to do? the thing has all the ports it has room for! (I think they struck a nice balance actually, but I would have liked to see a thunderbolt display port worked in there somehow. In place of HDMI but with an adapter? hm....)

* Battery Life is average. I didn't do a formal test, but I got about 4 hours out of it just writing up a report on google docs, installing ruby and other tools and apps. Normally this wouldn't bother much, but users can replace the battery, ever, so in two years I'll expect to be down to two hours of battery life.

* Non upgrade-able ram we know this going in, but while 4 gigs seems like plenty now, and ssds do a lot to mitigate the issue, increasing the amount of ram a machine is a pretty reliable way of getting extra years out of it.

* Some Windows 8 features make you want to use the screen as a touch surface. While you can touch the screen, the only thing that happens is you leave a little finger grease behind.

For the long haul:

I'll either find a way to upgrade it once it's out of warranty with a new battery, more ram (soldering iron anyone?) and a larger SSD, or I'll sell it to someone who doesn't need the horsepower I do.

Conclusions:

Do I like this laptop? Yes!

Am I going to keep it? Yes!

The screen is pretty much flawless, but I'd love for it to have touch.

Right now this laptop does everything I need, and most of what I want. It's beautiful and gives me hope for the future of *the pc*.

If you're a 3d gamer or plan on keeping your machine for more that a couple years forget ultrabooks. Get something with upgrade-able parts.

If you're an exec, or dev who doesn't need heavy lifting power, this laptop will suit you just fine.

*** P.S. 2013-04-27 ****

It's odd, but the laptop can get a little 'deformed' from time to time. I like to bike commute; I load up my bag pretty heavily. There have been three instances when I put my laptop down on an even surface and it didn't sit level. The metal seems to have a bit of flex to it and is 'hard' rather than springy. This makes it feel good in the hand but also subject to a bit of deformation. I've found applying a little downward pressure to the corners that won't touch the table while holding it in the air (a bit like bowing a piece of paper when holding it) fixes the problem. If you hear crunchy sounds you've probably gone too far!

Would I have purchased this laptop if I'd known about this little issue? I dunno. So long as it doesn't break and continues to lie flat I'm perfectly happy with it. It's darned thin. I love it's weight. These are things you're not going to find in a real laptop outside of an Airbook (I'm willing to bet Airbooks share this problem to a degree).

Series 9 baby.

This is my first review, and I didn't even buy the laptop from Amazon. I got it from BestBuy for the same price. But I'm returning it after having used it for almost 2 weeks now. I like everything about about it...almost. I really really want to just keep this and stop wasting so much time shopping for laptops, but after trying to justify it to myself and saying, oh, it's not that bad, maybe I can learn to live with it.....I have finally made the decision that for $1300, this thing better deliver and make me glad to own it.

The killer for me is the bad WiFi connection. My wife has a Dell Inspiron which cost ~$600 that gets MUCH stronger, more stable connection than this brand new Samsung! I am just flabbergasted that Samsung would make an "ultrabook" with bad WiFi hardware! Again, I have basically spent the last 2 weeks trying to justify the spotty connection and trying to live with it. But the more I used it, the more it annoyed me. I have now had a chance to take it to many other locations, like the library, several coffee shops, etc. Same issues! I've read a couple other reviews that commented on the bad wireless connection, and I thought maybe they were exaggerating, but no, they are not exaggerating. At home, even when I am sitting in the same room as my wireless router, I don't have full bars. My wife's insprion has full bars. My cell phone and her cell phone has full bars. What's the deal? Then at coffee shops and out in public places, I will loose connection all the time. I will have to disconnect and reconnect over and over again to keep the internet going. It gets really annoying when you are trying to do work, and open a web page, and it takes forever to load, and then you get the can't find the webpage, try reloading later message. Then you have go and do the disconnect, reconnect thing. Anyway, you get the picture.

I really wanted to keep this laptop, but at this point, I cannot justify spending that kind of money for a laptop that cannot even do a fundamental thing like connect to the internet. Sucks! Back to the drawing board. I hate shopping for laptops!

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 9 NP900X3E-A02US 13.3-Inch Full HD 1080p Premium

I recommended, received, and configured this laptop for a client, which is the reason I don't show up as a "verified purchaser."

The Samsung Series 9 900X3E-A02US does not offer a Win7 version WITH a full HD screen, so we ordered the Win8 model. My client owns her own small business, and wanted the OS to match what she has deployed around the office (Win7) so upon receiving it I stripped out Win8 and installed Win7. Here's what I found:

Hold down the F2 key the moment you power it on to get into the BIOS. You'll need to disable Fast Boot/POST and Secure Boot and change the mode from UEFI to CSM. I found no way to access a temporary on-the-fly boot device menu, so you'll need to change the boot order to prioritize your CD or bootable USB key. I could only get it to boot off the USB3 port on the left edge of the machine (YMMV) however once you get to the GUI portion of the Win7 installer, you'll need to pull your drive out of the USB3 port on the left, and plug it into the USB2 port on the right. (Win7 doesn't have native support for USB3, so once the kernel loads you lose support for your install device. Not to worry, it will find it after you swap it.) If you go too far without doing this, you'll get a screen telling you a driver is missing. Back up, swap ports, and proceed forward. I chose to wipe out all those damn recovery partitions and claim the entire usable drive, but some of us are badass risk-takers. ;-)

After Win7 finishes installing, naturally you'll trot off to the Samsung support site to download drivers. If you search for "900X3E" you'll be disappointed. The only OS they provide drivers for is Win8. The auto updater tool they offer also will not pull down drivers for Win7, so skip it. Fortunately you can search for "900X3D" and the drivers available there will get your WiFi, LAN, USB3, and Chipset working just fine. Once the Network drivers are in, running Windows Update will get you full graphics support.

And there you have it!

As for the machine itself, it's impressive. Great construction quality, very nice keyboard, and the touchpad is significantly better than the junk on my HP Envy. I happen to like high pixel density screens, and full HD on a 13.3" laptop is pretty damn good. The screen quality is bright and easy to look at. I'd rate it on the high end of a quality office-grade screen. (I'm a photographer in my other life, and am accustomed to working on very expensive IPS panels. This is definitely not that, but for anything else it's wonderful.) The SSD isn't the fastest I've used, but still beats a magnetic drive. The power adapter is minuscule, and so is the little nipple that plugs into the machine. It's almost too small (will it bend or break?) but so far no complaints. The power of this guy is impressive especially considering it's diminutive size. I'd be tempted to get one myself if Toshiba hadn't just announced the Kirabook with even MORE pixel density. A huge "THANK YOU!" to Samsung for going with a matte finish screen.

In summary:

**Pros**

Size

Construction quality

Screen resolution

Good CPU

SSD

Matte-finish screen

Great keyboard

Usable touchpad

Tiny power adapter

Intel's integrated graphics are getting good enough that discrete graphics are unnecessary for anyone other than serious gamers. (No, that doesn't apply to you in the knitted reindeer sweater your Bejewled is not a "serious game" and will run just fine.)

**Cons**

Screen not IPS

SSD not a high performance model

Samsung doesn't make it easy to find the Win7 drivers

Lacks a BIOS key for temporarily changing the boot device

No recovery discs included in the box. Seriously manufacturers, stop eating precious drive space (especially SSDs!) with this garbage, and just include a disc!!

I've had my Samsung Series 9 for about a week now and really like the form factor, design, weight and build quality. One thing that continually bothers me is the amount of money I spent on something so lacking in hardware performance. I keep having second thoughts and wondering if I should return it and get a slightly cheaper, heavier, but more powerful Asus UX model ultrabook. There are a few major flaws I found with the Series 9. The memory is slow and soldered directly to the motherboard so it cannot be upgraded. The SSD it comes with is a bit small, not as fast as most, and has almost 20GB used by recovery partitions (~118GB is free after they are removed with a clean install). The touchpad can be finicky at times especially when there is load on the system. The keyboard is easy to use even with bigger hands but it is a bit loud. The power connector is tiny and feels a bit cheap compared to the rest of the laptop. It's also missing a display port for some reason. The speakers sound great but can be muffled when using the laptop on your lap. The only thing that makes up for all this bad is the design, weight, sleekness and the amazing screen.

Cons:

Comes with Windows 8 (A horrifyingly retarded operating system with only the benefit of UEFI)

Non-upgradable Memory (4GB is not enough these days especially with the slow memory that it is)

No dedicated GPU (Would be nice even if it made the form factor slightly larger)

No display port (Even my 1+ year old Dell has one)

Useless LAN port (Why build this is when a USB adapter can be used or included. This is where the display port should have been)

SSD is small and filled with recovery partitions (A clean Windows 8 install can fix this if you have a copy)

No recovery disc(s) (Lame. Why does every computer company do this now?)

Touchpad behavior inconsistent under load (sometimes even with no load)

Loud keyboard

Webcam does not work well in low light/florescent/CFL light

Battery life is about 5-6 hours not anywhere near 9 hours like advertised

Cheap tiny power connector

Pros:

Full HD matte screen (Amazing and surprisingly bright with great viewability at almost any angle)

Design

Weight

Keyboard works great even though it is small and loud

Large touchpad without buttons

Fast boot (less than 10 seconds from pressing the power button to login screen)

Ultra fast sleep/wake fuctionality (takes about 3 seconds to wake after pressing the power button)

Downloadable Samsung Update utility makes it easy to update/reinstall drivers/software after a clean install

I was planning on using the Series 9 for light mobile development work but I don't think it will cut it now that I have it and have played with it. If you are willing to spend the money on it would be more than powerful enough for browsing, watching videos, school work, office work, and some light gaming. Anything load more serious and it would definitely need more and faster RAM (at least 8GB), and at least a 256GB SSD.

NOTE: For those of you who like doing clean installs F2 enters the bios settings, F10 displays the boot menu. You have to hammer them as soon as you turn it on. You also have to disable the fast bios option in the bios otherwise USB devices will not boot or show up in the boot menu.

Lenovo Ideapad Y550 15.6-Inch Laptop Reviews

Lenovo Ideapad Y550 15.6-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 2.5 stars
Buy Now
First of all, I didn't purchase the laptop through Amazon. I got it

from Lenovo's website. Having heard good things about the company and

read some good reviews of their laptops, I decided to check them out

when I needed a new laptop. I've had my Y550 for 4 days and will post

updates if things change for the worse but so far so good.

The specs:

Intel Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz)

4GB of DDR3 memory

500 GB HDD

Standard integrated graphics card

Blu-ray optical drive

The price was very good. I couldn't find a better deal (about 900

bucks after the ecoupon) for such a powerful machine with a blu-ray

option.

The first thing I noticed after setting up everything was the

beautiful, bright, and crisp screen. It is a full HD screen and

it is wide/squat (1366 x 768), great for watching movies. The screen

is bright, crisp and glossy but has very little glare. It really does

live up to the hype I've heard about it though I do wish that Lenovo

offered a higher resolution screen option (like a 1920 x 1080). After

seeing a blu-ray movie on it, I came away not disappointed that I paid

the extra 150 bucks for the blu-ray option.

The setup was easy and the software gives you the option of deleting

all the bloatware that it comes standard with. (It took me about 15

minutes to deselect all the bloatware) I only selected two of them to

run on my computer as the rest was useless junk that will slow

everything down and I suspect useless to most people too.

Performance: The computer is quite fast so for my needs (email, net

surfing, word processing, etc), it is more than sufficient. The

computer has the newer DDR3 memory making it even a little more

impressive performance wise.

Looks: It has a beautiful design with black carbon-fiber shell and

white palm-rest. The idea is to make the laptop light (it is just over

6 lbs, and only 1 inch thick(!) which for a laptop this size, it

really is among the lightest and thinnest.

Sound: The speakers are pretty good. It has a subwoofer and two JBL

speakers that, for a laptop, gets decent sounds.

Cool factor: The Veriface security software works very well in

allowing one to use one's own face to log in (the computer's camera

scans your face and logs you in when there's a match to saved images

of you) and only takes a few seconds to set up. No problems yet with

it and it works like a charm. The carbon-fiber shell, though not

fingerprint proof, will make cleaning them off easier; just wipe once

with non abrasive cloth and they're gone. The Touch Inductive Panel

above the keyboard is pretty cool but only a little better than being

useless as far as I can see. The touchpad allows for expanding/shrinking

text size by sliding two fingers apart or together.

Batteries: There are several energy settings. Since this is a powerful

laptop and has a relatively large screen, it doesn't do well at all on

the highest setting unplugged as to be expected. But on the lowest

energy-saver setting (Super Energy Saver), you could probably get a

little over 3 hrs of internet surfing, email, etc. and about 22.5

hrs of watching movies. But who wants to watch a movie on such a low

setting? The bright LED screen makes viewing a pleasure but on the

lowest settings, you will not get nearly as much image quality. So

this laptop is more like a desktop replacement in that area but get's

OK battery mileage for simpler functions.

Negatives:

-The thing only has two USB ports (Plus one eSATA port). For

a laptop with almost a 16 inch display, it should have more.

-Like I mentioned, Lenovo doesn't offer a 1920 x 1080 display

option. Watching blu-ray on a system like that with this type of

screen would have been incredible I'd wager.

-Like some other customers have mentioned Lenovo's customer support blows. I emailed them with some simple questions about my order and could not get a satisfactory answer. The answer they did give me was wrong as I later found out doing my own research. But since this has nothing to do with the product, I didn't deduct my rating on this account but the customer should be warned. Also, if you are buying from Lenovo's site, make sure you look into all the offers they have on sale such as the ecoupons they have scattered (hidden from view?) about on their site. You need to enter the code on the order page for the coupon when you order to get the discount. I got a 12% "employee discount" that cut the price of my laptop by 120 bucks but I had to dig through the site to find it. They sometimes also offer free shipping but search/hunt down and read the disclaimers (they don't offer this for several states). The Lenovo website was pretty disorganized and confusing.

-There's a lot of bloatware that comes installed on this laptop. Like I

said, remove as soon as possible because they are mostly crap and will

slow your computer down.

-The laptop doesn't come with backup software. Instead, it has a "One

Key Restore" function. I've had to use this function when I

accidentally uninstalled some good software that I wanted. I'd like to

have backup software, still.

-The touchpad takes little to get use to but that's not too much of a problem.

Overall, the computer has lived up to my high expectations and surpassed

them a little too!

[EDIT] It's been about 7 months since I got the computer and its harddrive has died. Lenovo's basic warranty took care of the problem in about a week's time. I hope it's just a problem with the manufacturer of the harddrive or that I was unlucky enough to get a crappy harddrive and not with Lenovo's fault. That's what I suspect but I have to update my rating from a 5 Star to a 2 Star since I don't really know what resulted in it.

[EDIT] Ok, another problem. The DVD/blu ray player will not play certain blu ray discs. So now I'm stuck with a 25 dollar blu ray disc that I can't play on it and can't return to the store.

I have had this laptop for over 3+ years, and it doesn't disappoint. I mainly use it for gaming, and its is pretty good! I have played many games on this laptop. It can run Team Fortress 2, Bioshock 2, Minecraft, Mirrors Edge, Portal 2, and many other games without lag.

The only downside to this laptop is that it can't play some of the newer games such as Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3, and Borderlands 2.

Other than that, there aren't that much downsides!

Best Deals for Lenovo Ideapad Y550 15.6-Inch Laptop

I bought this laptop from Lenovo website in September 2009 for $650. Intel C2D T6500, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD... and have been using it since. After a year, i had to get a replacement battery as it would die in 20 minutes. Didn't have any other issues other than that.

Pros: WLED screen is beautiful. Easy to change components (i replaced my 320 gb hdd with a ssd and it was very easy to do). Not noisy at all. No heating issues.

Cons: Only 2 USB connectors. Speakers are not that powerful. Intel graphics card is not good enough to play HD movies or any games.

There's this weird slot which comes with it which, frankly is a waste of space. Build quality is not that good, feels like plastic, but is not that flimsy either. I believe i dropped it down once from 3-4 feet in the school library and it survived.

Honest reviews on Lenovo Ideapad Y550 15.6-Inch Laptop

Hi everyone. First let me say that I did NOT purchase this laptop from Amazon. I got mine at a discounted price from NewEgg.

I'm going to break this review down into several categories.

My specs are as follows:

Intel Core2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz

4GB DDR3 RAM

Nvidia GeForce GT 240M

15.6" Screen

320GB 5400RPM HDD

Design:

Lenovo's laptops are designed very well (especially their ThinkPad Edge, T, and X Series), but there are a few design flaws that I personally don't like in this model. I do NOT like the hinges on this laptop. I have to hold the bottom half of the laptop when I open the lid and if your not careful the screen will shake back in forward until you stop it. The trackpad (which has small bumps on it) may be a bit small for some people, but I didn't have a problem with it. However, even though I don't like the hinges and the trackpad can be annoying sometimes this machine has an excellent keyboard (A HUGE plus for me), good speakers, dedicated volume up/down and mute buttons, responsive clicking buttons, and a decent 1366x768 screen(glossy).

Performance:

The performance on this laptop is awesome! I haven't experienced any slowing down from this computer since I bought it 2 years ago. HDD hasn't failed, RAM hasn't degraded, and the processor is still as fast as it was 2 years ago. I still feel like I have a new computer. The Nvidia graphics are good, but I don't know if you can still find this model (maybe on ebay). The graphics card is great for the games I have played (City of Heroes, LOTRO, Dragon Nest, Portal 2, Left4Dead 2, etc.)

Software:

This computer does come with some bloatware, but it also comes with some cool and useful software. You will just need to choose what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. I do suggest that you uninstall the antivirus (either mcafee or norton) and install either Advast (Free) or ESET Smart Security ($40+ depending on when you buy and what version you get)

Heat & Battery Life:

My laptop will only get hot on the back left side of the laptop where the vent is, and it only happens when I have used it for 1+ hours or when I am playing a game. As for battery life I have experienced 4hrs when I first purchased (3hrs now 2yrs later). If you play games then expect the battery life to be cut in a third. In short, have it plugged up when you play games.

Verdict:

If you want a good computer for the cheap price of $500 then this laptop would be great for you, but you will have to deal with the bad hinges, bumpy touchpad, and looking through the pre-installed software to see what you want to keep.

Suggestions:

If the laptop isn't as fast as you would like then I would install a free version of Linux such as Mint Linux or Bodhi Linux. You will have to learn how to use a new system, but it is MUCH faster. If you keep Windows 7 (like I did) then I would uninstall the antivirus that came preinstalled and buy ESET Smart Security like I mentioned above.

I purchased the IdeaPad Y550 straight from Lenovo and also purchased a 3-year warranty. The laptop overall is very fast and worked well at first. After 4 months, the computer would not boot up, and when it did the screen was black...I had to get the motherboard replaced! Thank goodness I purchased the warranty, as I was able to ship the laptop to Lenovo for the motherboard replacement.

After upgrading to Windows 7, I had issues with the sound and video (only heard static, Media Player did not work, videos did not play online) which were fixed after Lenovo support spent a couple hours working on it. It seems that everything is in order now, although I do not think the sound quality is as high as when I first purchased the laptop.

Overall, a decent laptop, but I encourage anyone who purchases it to also get a full warranty.

This little thing is lightweight and fast! Seems to be working well, but what I didn't realize was that it does NOT have a CD drive? I have Office and Smart Draw Photo on CD and can not load them on here, so I had to order an additional external CD drive, still waiting for that to come to see if it works, since it doesn't specify Windows 8. My brother, an MCSE, was surprised that it didn't come with some version of Word on it, but it doesn't, you can either purchase Office 10 or use a trial version. All other files from my old laptop had to be brought over on a flash drive. Another issue you don't think about is the touch screen. It's quite staticy, worse than a normal screen, and if you have dogs, it becomes a dog hair magnet. The hair doesn't blow off and when you go to wipe it off, you end up scrolling to another screen. Kinda funny, but something to think about. All in all, great little computer for the price, but be sure to make provisions if anything you need is on CD, and be prepared to step up the vacuuming, lol!

I bought this for my daughter for use in school and I have to say I really like this computer. The lap top is very fast, has great memory and a hard drive with enough space for everything you need along with sky drive as long as you have an MSN account. I thought the keyboard lit up on this but my mistake and it isn't a big deal. I have no idea why there are some people out there not liking Windows 8 but I have no problems with it and just have to learn how to get around on it. What also is good about this computer is that the battery can be replaced when it goes bad which is a negative for my Toshiba convertible which is a tablet/lap top. I highly recommend this computer and as usual HP makes another good product.

This is a great laptop. I have been using Mac for the past 5 years simply because it runs and windows always seemed to freeze up or cause problems. This computer is about $400 cheaper than a Mac and runs just as good if not better. I love it and I love Windows 8 as well.

Look I could go on and on but I will tell you to find a better computer with this price anywhere on the web or in your local retail store, but you can't find it. When you notice that it has 4 processors, that is the end of the story and all you will ever need to know. Most computers are dual-core processors and only the really expensive ones in excess of $700 or $2100 for a MAC, you just can't beat the price. And I know some people will say, "Acer" but it really does not matter because it is a good quality laptop and if you still buy it with the warranty, which I did it is still under $500 which is really what you want with a laptop. So just look at a laptop that you think has good features and compare to this laptop and the price, and I can almost guarantee you that when you are shopping for laptops, you can not beat the featur

es with the price. It will be the best value for your money on any laptop that you will ever buy or have ever bought.

"Update"

There is a newer version of this same model the 7677 i believe so if you are looking for the $399 dollar laptop then that is the one I am talking about, thats why amazon is not selling this current version anymore but just the new one with the same exact features for that $399 price

I was shopping for a quality laptop for audio production in the $400 range for about a month, and everything I found had a dual core processor, 3 or less GB of RAM, and was mostly out-of-date. Then I discovered this on pre-order, and was VERY impressed by the specs. Once I gathered the money to buy my new computer, this notebook was finally available, so I jumped on it with a quickness. Not only did Amazon.com ship on a holiday (Labor Day,) it arrived within 48 hours with the free shipping option! Once I started getting everything setup, and installed my audio production applications, I was amazed by how smoothly it performed... I still haven't managed to make it bog down in the least! This system is a beast, and by far the best deal around at this point. Anything close is $100 or more expensive, and usually lacks the features this system boasts. I am more than pleased with my purchase, and would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a high quality system at a low price. I give it a 100 out of 10! Thanks for providing such an awesome deal, you have scored a customer for life!

Best Deals for Acer AS5552-7474 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)

I ordered this computer and received it the next day.

This computer puts your money where it counts on the processor. It's the only one in its price range with a quad core. Other makers take a weak processor but put in a blu-ray player, USB 3.0, finger-print reader (seriously), or something else that I don't really need. It's made of plastic, so don't expect it to feel like an HP or a Mac.

The keyboard is ok, but not great. I don't mind it enough that I would buy an external keyboard, but my girlfriend has an HP Pavilion DV6(I think) and the keyboard is much nicer it's up to you what you care about. My computer has a better processor, even though hers cost $200 more.

The screen is good as good as her HP.

I recommend buying a Logitech wireless mouse to go with it the track pad is not very big. You can find them for $20 on here and they're nice.

Honest reviews on Acer AS5552-7474 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)

Hello. I just received this laptop to replace an older Acer 4810TZ that I own. So far, I'm liking it much better. It has an attractive mesh lid(black,) and the interior and keyboard is also done in a textured finish to combat fingerprints. As far as performance goes, there is no comparison. The AS552-7474 is much faster. I burned a test movie to see what difference there would be and it was considerable. The 4810TZ took about 1 and 1/2 to 3 hours to go through an average film, while this one only took about 35 minutes. It handles multitasking much better. The web cam still kind of sucks at the higher resolutions, though. It runs hotter as well, about 49%-50% Celsius overall to the 4810TZ's 38%-42% Celsius, but that is to be expected with the drastically more powerful components. The battery life is about 2 hours and 20 minutes set at "balanced." It came with an astonishingly low amount of useless software and trials, which is very nice. The amount of updates required is fairly low as well. I am not a very technically savvy user, so things like "over clock" testing is out of the question. Sorry.

I will do an update of the performance in a couple of months, but average guy says "So far, so good."

UPDATE:

I've had this for several months now and it is still going strong. It is fast and much more stable than my last laptop. I put in an 8gb RAM set, so it really flies. I still recommend this laptop. Awesome computer for the money. My only gripe is that the mesh lid tends to hold dust, but oh well.

This is more of a heads up then a review. This proctuct has a LIST price on ACER's website of 399.00. When Amazon has it in stock, that is what the price is. When they don't, it seems to be selling from other suppliers for over 550.00. I expect this laptop is good quality as I have 2 other Acer's that have been fantastic, but do not over pay for this item. Wait for Amazon to restock this before you pay way over list price.

This is a great computer for someone that is looking for a decently powerful notebook but wants to remain in the sub-$1000 range. It has a quadcore AMD Phenom II CPU. Sadly it is a lower clock speed (1.6 Ghz) and it lacks L3 cache. It may struggle in single threaded applications compared to the Intel line up, but the difference in performance is hardly noticeable to the average user. In fact, I am perfectly happy with the CPU thus far.

Next I will discuss the graphics card, and this notebook actually has two. There is an integrated GPU which is an ATI Radeon 4200 series. This processor is activated when the notebook is on battery power. It consumes far less energy than the dedicated card and prolongs the battery life. The dedicated card is a ATI Radeon 5650 with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM. It is possible to switch between GPU's and by default the notebook automatically switches to the 4200 when unplugged and to the 5650 when plugged in. This card is very capable for this price range. I have only tested it with one game thus far. I was able to play Battlefield Bad Company 2 on medium graphics settings fairly smoothly. Games older than this should play on medium to high settings.

The 16-inch LED backlit screen is great and it provides a nice clean picture.

My only gripe with this notebook is the battery life. It is under 3 hrs, which is not great. Although for me it is not enough of a flaw to take off a star as I will be plugged in most of the time. Even when I am mobile I will not be far from a plug.

I also want to state that the previous two reviews where hasty in there complaints. This computer is capable of playing games and functions well with the ATI Radeon 5650. They were either not switched to 5650 or where using the battery and trying to play games.

I am very happy with my purchase and can see my self recommending Toshiba to friends.

Pros:

ATI Radeon 4200/5650 switchable graphics

16-inch LED screen

Backlit Keyboard

Windows 7

Not a fingerprint magnet

Speakers are pretty good

Price

Cons:

Battery life is only okay

5400 rpm Hard drive (I wish it was a 7200 rpm)

Limited bloatware (not as bad as other computer brands)

EDIT: I edited the review to correct my mistake about the amount of video RAM. I changed the review to reflect the correct amount of DDR3 RAM. There is in fact 1 GB instead of the previously stated 512 Mb.

I was very please when I received my new Toshiba within 3 days of ordering. The laptop is as specified, bar one specification. The specs both on Amazon and Toshiba's website show that the Laptop has gigabit ethernet, but mine only came with a fast ethernet card (10/100 Mbit speed). I have called Toshiba Tech Support to find out why this is so, as that was one of the specs that was on my must-have list. They have promissed to call me back in a couple of days, to try to resolve the issue. I await patiently, and will update this review, if I can. So a thumbs up for Amazon for great service, but I am afraid a thumbs down so far for Toshiba, for apparently not selling me the Laptop they advertised.

I wrote a previous review, but I had no idea what this laptop really was about!

I have installed EA's Battlefield bad company and it runs with the highest configuration. But the best I have played with this was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with highest values, and it runs smoothly with perfect sound and image.

Buy it, no doubt about it.

About the video card, it has a process running all the time which changes the display driver on the run when it is disconnected, but only if user allows it to do it. So, it comes with two video cards, one of them with 1GB accelerated video.

Great machine. I would buy it again!

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6059 LED TruBrite 16-Inch Laptop (Black)

I've been greatly pleased with my Satellite A665D: it seems solid, well-built, the keyboard LEDs are a useful feature, and the keyboard has the best feel of any laptop I've ever had. All my adjustment problems have been getting used to the differences between Vista and Windows 7. I've not done much in the way of stress testing the system, but it brings up Mass Effect 2 with no problem.

I don't know what to make of the comments regarding missing drivers. The Device Manager on my system reports both ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 adapters; both are said to be "working properly", the 5650 has an IRQ of 0xFFFFFFFD, and its driver DLLs show a raft of DLLs. I'm not in any way a hardware maven, but I certainly don't feel cheated. The system has a Windows' Experience rating of 5.9, with the limiting factor being the disk drive transfer rate. The Graphics and Gaming Graphics ratings are both 6.7, better than the ratings of any of its other components.

When I bought this laptop, I was looking for a lot of bang for the buck, and I think that I've got it.

Excellent performing laptop, the driver issue mentioned in the other reviews is a result of user error, not a problem with the machine. For the price, it runs games well. Left4Dead 2 at max settings averages about 30-35 frames per second and Assassin's Creed II at max runs about 20-25 frames per second. Included in my review are links to the proper drivers for the graphics card for both Vista and Win7.

It was easy to set up right from the box.It came preloaded with win7 which was my choice. It has a very durable case, strong hinges and an incredible keyboard. The display is sharp and crisp. There was hardly any bloatware to remove.

The only thing(very minor) is that the external speaker jack is in the front which is unhandy at times as I like to use an external

keyboard from time to time.

It came eqipped with 4gig of ram which is OK for most things.I added 4Gig and it made the laptop very quick.

I would highly recommend this unit for any one.

Arrived on time 3 weeks ago. Easy setup. Wanted a laptop to replace an aging, slow-moving tower used mostly for email, Office docs and, more importantly, streaming video to our tv. Our goal was to have the Notebook's on-board display + VGA & HDMI displays lit up simultaneously. Intel (processor manufacturer) specifications stated "Supports 3 displays," but a pre-sale HP support guy said this was not possible and that only 2 would be available at a time. We didn't have confidence in his answer, so decided to go ahead and buy. Turns out he was right, though it can be done by adding a $150 multimedia docking station.

It was a bit bumpy getting the various displays configured for switching back and forth. At one point I thought that it might require plugging and unplugging the external displayswhich did not make me happy. I called HP post-sale support for assistance and got a guy who told me that the laptop *was* capable of using all three displays simultaneously. But he wasn't much help in showing me how to work out the software (Intel Graphics & Media Control Panel) configs to switch monitors and I had a sense that he was in above his head. He left me with the time honored "Update the graphics driver."

After poking around a bit, I found an HP app already installed which informed that I needed quite a few HP updates (some probably programs I will never use), but the graphics driver was not one of them. I confirmed that the driver installed is the latest. After installing the updates, I was able to get the monitors co-ordinated and we are doing fine.

What impressed me the most was that, a few days after my call, the HP tech guy *rang me up* to inquire if the problem had gotten resolved! I cannot remember the last time a customer service rep from any company called me back to find out if I needed additional assistance. For that alone I would give HP 5+ stars if I could.

I am a software developer and was looking for a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop on which to do some Windows 8 development. I was additionally looking to replace my Asus UL30VT as my occasional travel laptop. I am an amateur photographer, so I also wanted something with a nice screen that could do at least full HD at 1920 x 1080. This last consideration narrowed the field quite a bit.

After comparing many models and finally ordering and receiving this Sony I can state that I couldn't be happier. This is such a beautiful machine and such an incredible value for the price. While Windows 8 is still growing on me, the machine itself is wonderful. First off, is the screen. Text and photos look gorgeous. There is no substitute for pixel density when rendering text and this machine renders text and web pages beautifully. I loaded up my Nikon photo software to review a number of photos from my D90 and they looked wonderful. I held out for a 1080p screen because I also like to watch movies. I loaded up Windows Media Player Home Cinema edition and threw a 1080p MKV at it, which it rendered wonderfully using only about 20% CPU during the busy action scenes with the Intel video chipset. This had been a point of potential concern for me since there isn't a discrete graphics card in the machine.

The sound is just okay, as is generally the case for a laptop. Certainly acceptable for watching a movie and general use although I wouldn't want to try to rock out to them. I could have done without the DVD drive, but as an old school programmer and PC user I appreciate having it and am creating system recovery DVD's as I write this. The variety of ports is also appreciated. Having a GigE ethernet port was a must for me. The VGA port was also not required, but is darn nice to have. The USB-3 port will come in handy for more rapid backups and perhaps occasional device charging.

The aluminum chassis, shiny chrome strip and backlit keyboard all add touches of class that make this a thing of beauty as well as a workhorse.

I am a student going into college in the fall of 2013 and had been searching for a laptop for a very long time. After months of searching for a laptop that had what I needed AND what I wanted, I finally found the Sony VAIO.

Pros:

-15.5" is a great screen size; big enough to watch movies or play games if you want, yet small enough to be portable.

-Quick turn-on time due to the solid state drive. The laptop boots up within 3 seconds at the most.

-The screen resolution is solid. HD movies look beautiful and small words are relatively easy to read.

-The touch screen is accurate and smooth and makes Windows 8 easier to use

-600 GB of storage space is more than enough for most people

-I love that this laptop comes with an HDMI port. I can hook it up to any TV and the picture is very clear.

-The backlit keyboard is useful for using the laptop in the dark. I'm surprised at how many laptops these days do not have backlit keyboards.

-The number pad on the side of the keyboard is a must-have for a college student like me

-The keyboard is very sensitive, which could be a good or bad thing depending on the person. I like having a sensitive keyboard since I have small hands. Someone with larger hands may find it bothersome.

-The design of the laptop looks sleek and professional.

Cons:

-The touch pad is very loud when you use it to click

-The fan can, at times, be somewhat loud

-The left side of the bottom of the laptop gets very hot, so don't let it sit on your lap without some kind of pad to put it on.

-There is only one USB 3.0 port; I wish there were more.

-The speakers aren't the best, but they are tolerable. I use headphones most of the time anyway.

-I wish the CD/DVD drive could play Blu-rays.

-I don't know how well the battery works or how long it lasts because I have almost always have my laptop plugged in to an outlet.

Even though there are some negative aspects to this laptop, I give the VAIO five stars because I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a computer for both work/school and for entertainment purposes like watching movies and playing some simple games. And for a laptop like this, the price is amazing. I'm overall very pleased with this product.

I did a lot of research into my laptop purchase and eventually chose this one. A decision which I'm already regretting. I run my own business and work a lot from home, or remotely with my clients. I needed something that was portable, but powerful, and a desktop equivalent in many senses. What I got was a laptop that crashed after 5 weeks and entered a perpetual loop of saying it had encountered an error and needed to restart... restarting, and saying the exact same thing again, so that I could never get it to start up. I took it back to the retailer who said it needed a completely new hard drive and everything on the current hard drive would be lost. Luckily I sought a second opinion at a Sony Store, who ran a system reboot and got it up and running again. Thank goodness. But it continues to shut itself down for no reason at least once a week, has problems starting, and generally just makes me feel nervous that it's going to crash at any point.

But by FAR The most annoying thing about this laptop that makes me want to return it every single day, is that it won't hold a WiFi connection. 50% of the time it connects automatically when I log on, the other 50% it doesn't and I have to try and do it manually. But even when it does connect, this often lasts about 10 minutes before it automatically disconnects for no reason (and still says its connected...although I can't open a webpage or send an email). I have to either reboot, or put it into airplane mode then back to normal to restart the WiFi connection. In a normal working day, I probably have to do one of those 2 things at least 20 30 times. It's beyond annoying and wastes about 40 minutes of every day just trying to fix the connection. It drives me mad.

If I had realised within my 30 day return period, I would have got a full refund and bought a completely different laptop. I feel like I'm stuck with this one, and every time I take it in to get these problems looked at they update the software and say it should be fixed. It never is. In my opinion this is a massive fault with the machine, and having Googled it more since my purchase, it seems it's not an uncommon one either.

I had a very basic Toshiba notebook for 4 years prior to this Sony, and didn't have a single problem with it. Very disappointing.

HP laptops have been disappointing to me. I personally would not buy another HP product. But I have this laptop for work.

If you are left-handed, you operate the mouse next to the fire-breathing cooling fan exhaust and your hand will be burnt. This laptop runs hot; the exhaust temperature exceeds 55C. So why does HP place the cooling on the left side not on the back?

After a year of use, the first button on the touchpad stuck and is no longer useable.

This is the worst computer I've ever owned. The specs are impressive, but it was incredibly poorly designed. The placement of the fan makes it so that the computer overheats and shuts itself off regularly. If you're doing any kind of work that requires heavy processor usage, save early and save often, because this hunk of junk WILL crash on you. Not only that, it's heavy. I recommend that you use this PC as a paperweight, but not a computer.

Bought this laptop almost three years ago, and have never had a major issue with the thing. Everything still works except for the little keyboard illuminator which got jammed shut (which I never used anyway).

I am most impressed with this machine's ability to survive spills. I spilled an entire beer right on the keyboard, and after quickly flipping it over and removing the battery and keyboard, I let it dry overnight. The next morning I pried all the keys off and soaked them and scrubbed the board, then rinsed the whole keyboard with distilled water. 12 hours later the machine was working, and as clean as it was brand new.

The thing has also fallen off multiple counters, no problems yet. Battery still lasts a long time.

Overall a great buy.

Honest reviews on HP Smartbuy EliteBook 8540w

I have bought this machine after giving much consideration to competition and specs. The HP is not the latest in terms of processor since there are machines out there that have i7 second generation processors for about the same price or perhaps less. What attracted me this system is not the latest in terms of processor clock speed but overall build quality and configuration that is paired in the very nice and fast package? Most of the main points for me, since I do use this computer for 3D CAD is the graphics card and chipset. The performance QM57 chipset in the HP vs. for instance Asus`s G73SW-XA1 (HM67 chipset which is just a main street chipset)is significantly better in the performance and security departments. Also as many of us start to use the new generation wireless routers HP as of right now is the only machine that uses true 5ghz network speeds with Intel's Ultimate6300 Intel's ultimate 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter for business and home. The Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6300 dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), 3x3 adapter delivers up to 450 Mbps¹ bandwidth, maximum range and reliability, and unique Intel-only features including Intel® Wireless Display, and Intel® vPro(tm) technology support. I have had this computer for about 2 years, using it primarily for school use. The computer has done its job for the most part. Windows Professional isn't exactly necessary for business students, as my primary uses for this computer are Chrome, Office, iTunes, and Torrenting. I think the main reason why I went with it was because it had the side number pad (I use excel frequently for accounting and finance).

I purchased a 3-year warranty for it and I'm glad I did. The screen is very flimsy you must be careful about grabbing the cheap plastic that encases the screen along the sides. I've done this twice and I have had to get a new screen both times. With that being said, the screen is very high quality and the resolution is almost comparable to my Retina Display iPad.

This computer is incredibly heavy, and is not ideal for travel, walking to class, bringing to work. Also, the battery life is not great (4 hours?) and the computer gets very hot if it is sitting on your lap.

Maybe I did not buy this computer for the proper reasons, but it is not that amazing. Very average.

I bought this laptop purely out of the compelling nature of the Amazon Lightning Deal price of $279 plus the specifications of the unit (since then it seems they've made the deal price the standard one, for now). I own a computer service business, so I know exactly how to research laptops for potential purchase down to the component level, and here's why I decided to make the buy:

* CPU: It might be a cheap Celeron, but it has a 1MB cache and 64-bit capability, and is based on the Core 2 processor; DEFINITELY far more powerful than any netbook, and in my tests it plays 720p high-definition H.264 video clips without a single hitch. The lower cache is also somewhat mitigated by the dual-channel DDR3 memory.

* RAM: 2GB of dual-channel DDR3. Enough said. It's the latest and greatest kind of memory, and there's enough to get most typical things done. You could even run Photoshop if you wanted, and it'd be fine.

* Hard drive: 160GB SATA...pretty small by today's standards, but it's way more than most people will use, including myself since I have a desktop for all the big stuff.

* DVD-RW drive: YES, IT BURNS DVDs. Very compelling, particularly since netbooks' main missing feature is an optical drive.

* 15.6" widescreen: you can easily buy a laptop for $300 more and get a smaller screen. The image is crisp and I absolutely can't complain. The resolution is really good, also. Plenty of video real estate to get things done.

* Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit: 64-bit! Not Starter Edition! Not Vista! What more could you ask for? (Also, Linux works great on it; I checked!)

* This thing isn't a 17" laptop, yet it has a numeric keypad! Not a full one, but just the fact that it has the standard 0-9 and Enter matrix in the proper place is amazing, and awfully handy for keeping those pesky financial records!

Some people will not like the lack of a webcam, but the most annoying compromise is the sound. While you can easily connect a set of speakers and get wonderful sound, the built-in speaker is mono (there is only one speaker), very quiet, and has a very poor response range. It's sufficient for hearing sounds such as a mail notification (if ambient noise in the room is low), but it's insufficient for almost everything else, including listening to music. Honestly, most people could care less about the missing cam and pitiful speaker, especially at this price point. It's powerful, it gets the job done and does so at great speed, and the feature list is absolutely shocking for a $279 unit. If I was evaluating this at its "normal" $399 price, I would advise coughing up an extra $100 and buying a dual-core unit with 4GB and a 320GB hard drive instead, but the $120 off makes this an absolutely unbeatable offer. In fact, I've already helped three other people purchase one since mine was delivered and I evaluated it first-hand.

If you get this at a good price, you absolutely won't be sorry. Just buy it!

I ordered the laptop using my Prime account on Monday and it arrived two days later, as promised. The laptop comes in a simple, cardboard eMachines box with basic instructions: Put in Battery, Plug in, Turn on.

Upon opening the monitor, I notice shelling is made of a thin, flat black plastic. A little on the cheap side, but this laptop is not meant to go off-road. Acceptable. The monitor is wide and very crisp. I was very disappointed in the video card. Granted, it is an integrated 4500M, but the resolution display cannot go any higher than 1366x768. I like my icons and screen to appear smaller, so I can essentially fit more onto my screen. The keys are well spaced and firm to the touch, so there is no accidental key-pressing. There is also an integrated accounting key-pad on the right, something my previous Compaq M2100 did not have, a plus for accounting/econ majors. The power cord seems pretty sturdy. Unlike my previous Compaq which was victim of a weak neck, the power cord is a 90 degree plug and reinforced with thicker amounts of synthetic plastic/rubber. Finally, the laptop weighs in at 5.65 pounds.

This laptop will be used for basic everyday use: Internet Browsing, Mail, Social networking, remote networking into work, MS Office and Videos/Music. I do not plan on using any photo or movie editing programs. I was able to browse the internet a bit. I checked my mail and social networks. The laptop seems efficient, but when I attempted to run two tabbed windows (Car Forum and Ytube) at once, one of the windows (YTube) crashed! Luckily, it was quickly recovered Windows. Not a big deal for people with patience, but I always run multiple tabs so this might be a problem in the future.

The laptop comes with Windows 7 64-bit, a plus. It also comes with a 60 day trial of Microsoft office and Norton antivirus.

Overall, I really like the laptop. It lacks power in the dated Celeron processor but makes up for in a strong wireless 802.11b/g/n card, a nice sleek monitor and 160GB available hard drive for storing movies, music and pictures.

For $279 (Amazon Lightning Deal), I am very satisfied with my purchase!

*EDIT*

I was able to fool around with the new laptop some more last night. In total, I used the laptop for about 1.5 hours, MAX. The first 60 minutes comprised of basic internet browsing: Fbook, Amazon.com, and YouTube. Since I did not have available Wi-Fi, I tethered my HTC Snap. Sadly, because I was in the hills of Hollywood, I got very poor reception so my internet was sluggish. I skipped the YTube and stayed on Meebo for some chat.

My next laptop session was later that night at my apartment. I picked up the apartment's Wi-Fi quickly and web pages loaded normally, but nothing phenomenal. The wireless card works well, as expected.

As an avid music junkie, I noticed the Mono-speaker is VERY under powered. I opened Pandora while I was cooking in the kitchen. The noise from the overhead oven vent clashed with the weaker speaker from the laptop. The speakers in my old Compaq M2100 were much stronger. Granted, they were stereo. However, if you have a pair of headphones, watching movies on a plane, car ride or late at night easily solves this problem.

After I shut down, my battery life read 57%. Not bad for about 1.5 hours of web browsing and music streaming while using a mixture of Tether/Wi-Fi. Let me also add, whenever I am not plugged into AC power, I set my screen brightness to the lowest to conserve the laptop's power.

Again, I STILL believe this is a GREAT laptop for the price.

This looks like an Acer Aspire AS5734Z-4512 NoteBook except it comes with a single core processor (Acer owns Gateway and eMachines).

I am expecting accessories to be well supported and compatible between both brands.

At $279, this laptop is an excellent deal. Ordered on Wednesday, delivered before noon on Thursday.

The laptop is lightweight (lighter than my 13" Apple MacBook) and responsive (DVDs play seamlessly).

It just takes a couple of minutes to configure it. I was able to connect my WPA2 Wireless N network with no issue.

The power adapter accepts up to 240V and the power cord is detachable this should be usable in Europe.

A webcam would have been a nice addition.

Pros:

Large and bright screen

Full keyboard with keypad

Windows 7 license

Minimal bloatware

Intel processor and video chipset

Reasonably fast and responsive

Up and running in two minutes

Reads DVDs out of the box

Battery comes half charged

Cons:

Single core processor

No webcam

Low powered speaker

Keypad skews keyboard to the right

Honest reviews on eMachines eME527-2537 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

For the past two weeks or so, I had been on the prowl for the cheapest laptop or net book I could find, as I needed something portable to use with a module on my motorcycle. Constantly lugging the desktop outside simply wouldn't do.

I happened across this machine during a lightening deal (which seems to sporadically going in and out of effect for the past two to three days). For the price, this is an extremely capable machine, understandably with no extras to keep the price as low as it is.

Pros:

Minimal software is included, but free options (Open Office, GIMP, VLC, iTunes) all run very decently.

DVD playback is adequate, although there is some hiccuping as the drive "spools" up initially, but is fine after a few seconds.

The wireless card works better then I would have expected, and has about the same range as my MacBook Pro.

I couldn't easily locate it before purchase, but the screen resolution is 1366 x 768.

Minimal pre-installed bloatware.

Plays Solitaire fine, I wouldn't trust it for anything more intensive than that though.

I was spoiled my Apples' trackpad included with their newest MacBook Pro, but the trackpad on here works quite nicely. While not being multi-touch capable, the included drivers / utilities allow you to set up sections to use as scrolling (for webpages), simulate momentum scrolling, and have hot-sections for gestures / commands.

Cons:

The lid does feel a little flimsy, but under normal use doesn't seem like it should be problematic.

Very cheap, mono-speaker. If you're going to watch movies or play music, make sure you have some headphones.

If all you need as a bare-bones laptop, this machine is perfect. Just about the same price as (if not cheaper than) a good number of netbooks, which gives you an optical drive, at the trade-off of battery life. A little shy of an hour and a half of web browsing forums with brightness at minimum took the battery from full charge to about 45%. I haven't tweaked the power saving options, could probably salvage a little more juice out of it.

You get what you pay for but once in a while a great value floats to the surface and this eMachine proves it. Sure the audio is pretty bad and as noted by other reviewers the little jewel hardly features leading edge performance but if you can hook one for less than $300 its a steal for rudimentary applications...email, surfing the net, amazon-shopping. Excellent wireless performance and good battery life. I still hate MicroSoft but Windows-7 doesn't suck too bad so the whole purchase has been positive. Strongly recommended.

OK so, my new Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-8524BLK arrived yesterday well packed in a double box. My old portie is a Dell Inspiron E1505 and it has been a decent portie thru the years so I thought I would give a new one a try. I knew I would be replacing Windows 8 when I bought it (I am a tech expert).

PROS: The price is good for the hardware you get: 6GB RAM, i5 cpu, HD4000 graphics, HDMI, USB 3, etc. The build quality seems good, cover is a nice matte finish that doesn't show finger prints, full numeric keypad, keyboard has a nice feel. Fast and quiet with good battery life from the 6-cell battery. It is thin and light.

CONS: Hardware has improved so much over the years but the display on this new one is only 1366x768 compared to the 7 year old E1505 with 1280x800. Not a big deal to me but it seems like there should be better default displays by now. I miss the old media control buttons on the front edge of the E1505. Touchpad is very hard to use/get the hang of.

The big knock on this machine is true of most portables today they come with Windows 8. Microsoft has had lemons before but this is such an utter disaster. Why does Ballmer even have a job? I personally hold M$ responsible for the demise of the PC market by introducing this turd. Anything you want as long as it is W8. WTF!??

My solution was to just to delete Windows 8. I now dual boot Linux Mint 15 XFCE and Windows 7 Pro. Non-experts should be careful when considering a new machine with Windows 8 on it.

EDIT: The touchpad was just too unusable for me (it is my only pointing device). After trying different settings with no improvement I have returned this purchase.

EDIT 2: I guess Ballmer *is* leaving Microsoft now!

Nice computer that does everything I want so no problem there. I don't game, just use for internet and basic programs.

My biggest complaint is with the touchpad. It is either too large or sits too far to the right or both. The palm of my hand touches it and sends the cursor somewhere else on the page (twice while typing this so far). Guess I can disable and use a mouse or use better posture.

The keyboard is a minor problem and may just be me. I would suggest checking out a Dell at a store though to see if you may have the same problem. Looks like many models use the same layout.

The other thing is Windows 8 (does anyone remember "New Coke" or "Pepsi Clear"). It is terrible but many have complained about it so I won't go into detail. It is so bad I almost returned the computer.

I have since downloaded a shell that gives the look of older versions of Windows and also have done some tweeks so I have been able to get by pretty well and only have minor issues with the OS now.

The machine is very good for the price. The applications open very fast. Its performance is very efficient. The small drawback is the Windows 8 operational system: it takes a while to familiarize with.
