I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

This iBook G4 GREAT for typical web-surfing, email, word/spreadsheet/office work, and for doing 95% of what most computer users want in a portable. It is compact and powerful. I've used one for several years for trips and weekendsI can keep up on email, play music, even watch a movie on it (DVD player built in)..

The 1.33ghz has built-in WIFI and bluetooth, so my external keyboard works perfectly with it, and I use it in any coffee shops or WIFI zones while travelling.

The weakest point (in my perspective) is that it's not a powerhouse processor. If you're thinking of making movies on it, you're going to find yourself spending a good bit of time. But for 95% of what people do on laptops, this thing ROCKS! The battery life ranges I've seen 45 minutes, and with a brand new battery 3.5hrs. i'm also a super power-user, so I generally "run the wheels off" anything I use.. so comparatively you might see it last a wee bit better..

The comparison to a netbook is very true. And this thing actually has a hard drive! and, what's best: if you lose it or it gets stolen, you're not out $1300 --the purchase price is very reasonable by comparison. I know a handful of folks with these 12" 1.33's, and they all love them.

I was very dissappointed with this purchase. It is so slow you could take a nap between clicks. I also have never used a Mac before and it is very difficult in my opinion to use.

I bought this laptop from Dell and I got to say it's easily one of the best laptops I've used in my life. This laptop handles multitasking like its nothing, running several programs at once. The i7 technology allows me to run my software developing program while listening to music on youtube and chatting on facebook with no lag while switching between windows.

The 1080p display is just beautiful, I play movies and music videos from youtube and it looks amazing. The display really impressed me.

My favorite part about the laptop I would say is the video card. The AMD Radeon HD 7730M 2GB is not the best graphic card out there, but it's still a really good video card. I've ran several games like The amazing spiderman, Black Ops 2, Assassin's creed, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Darksiders, and many more, and they all run extremely smooth. Some may not run at full FPS on high settings, some do, but they all run very smooth on med settings. The screen size of the laptop itself may be off putting to some gamers, but if you have a big screen TV and an HDMI cable, you can connect the two and get awesome quality on your TV.

In short, here are some of the highlights:

-Super fast i7

-Amazing 1080p display

-Very good graphics card

-Nice speakers

-Boots up in like 10 seconds

-Opens netbeans in like 3 seconds

-Smooth gaming

Some things I didn't like:

-Short battery time. Even on power saver mode it only last about 2-3 hours. I believe its because of the power of the laptop, so be sure to always carry your charger with you.

-A little heavy when compared to one of those lightweight laptops, but not too heavy nonetheless.

To summarize, if you're looking for a powerful laptop at an affordable price, then consider this super powerful computer.

Lets all be honest, the main draw of this machine is the 2gb video card. Dell has failed to update the BIOS to work correctly int he windows 8 environment and as such the video card does not get called if/when it should. You can do a few tricks to force it, but it won't work for games or for video editing.

The only fix I have found was the Catalyst control center, but even then Windows 8 will arbitrarily decide that the software doesn't need to work anymore, along with a myriad of other programs that are needed for most modern games (Steam/Origin/etc). When you can get a game to work and the video card to work too the game will run for a bit, but eventually the hammer will drop and your performance will dip or the game will crash.

If you must buy this laptop, go find a windows 7 version. Dell has no business shipping this as an end user device and microsoft has no business forcing windows 8 to be used when it just plain doesn't work.

This is an excellent Machine, very fast, with Turbo Booster 2.0 auto manage processor speed. I can run multiple tasks without delays excecuting them.

There is a model very similar to this one and almost 200.00 $USD ($736.00)cheaper, for less video and plastic back plate instead of aluminium, and keyboard backlit but more Hard Disk Drive, and 3 pounds less in weight which is very good if you carry your laptop with you. At first I thought I would have bought that one if was listed but now, after using this one I am very happy about this purchase.

No regret so far only:

1-This is advertised as 2.5 GHz, but base processor speed is 2.2GHz and I have seen mine at 2.9GHz with Turbo Booster Monitor.

2-Little heavy, 9 pounds (not really a problem).

3-Touch pad is very sensible but you can be solved with a mouse or some adjusting (not an issue).

4-I did not like, I saw this machine in dell.com website at a higher Price, and came here in blackfriday weekend, I though I bought it in a special Price, but now is lower. There was a psicological trick used to buy it in a hurry and two weeks later was a little cheaper. Not enough for a return but, I feel blackfriday was a trick.

Dell is a very good Brand and the best in Warranty service in my country, that was a very important point in my purchase.

This computer moves very fast, and multitask without delay.

My rate is 4.8 from 5.

Good Luck!!

I have been having a nightmare with this computer and Dell Company. Computer freezes almost once a day, yet Dell tells me it is a software issue. We have tried restoring etc. But does not work. Tried for a refund but they repeatedly told me they had fixed the problem. No, it still has problems. Now they say the time period has expired. It has been 23 days since they shipped it, but only 15 days I have owned the computer. I spent over 5 hours on the phone with Dell today, and been hung up on 4 times. I will not ever buy from Dell again.

I'm a student, and I was debating between getting a Dell or an Asus EeePC. I went ahead and got this one, because a friend of mine owned the 15z for a bit more.

Here are some pros and cons.

Pros:

-good performance, actually just fine for a laptop this size and price

-relatively long battery life (six hours and 35 minutes)

-I got the black one, I liked the design

-Nice keyboard feel I type a lot during the day, so the cushy keyboard was nice

Cons:

-The trackpad and buttons are a bit stiff, but not much of a problem unless you use it when gaming

-Lots of dell bloatware. I.e., mcafee security, roxio, and a few others that flood you with popups when you first open the 14z.

Great price (50 dollar gift card for a total of 499.99.)

Lightweight.

Great battery.

No flex in keyboard.

Easy access to hard drive.

Aluminum cover (top and around keyboard.)

Cons:

Plastic Bottom.

Second memory module location is located under the keyboard.

No back-lit keyboard (this really isnt a con considering I knew this laptop would not come with one given its lower price.)

Great computer for what is paid. I installed a SSD and eight gigabytes of memory. It is now lightning fast.

This machine has a solid, all metal construction, with the only plastic being the keys and the bezel surrounding the screen. It is quite fast with a 2nd gen core i5 CPU. Keyboard is one of the best I've ever used, compared with Lenovo thinkpad T420. Very satisfied with the screen is bright and clear. Highly recommended!

Granted, I have only owned one other laptop, but that is not to say that I have not used many other ones. I am quite a tech-guru and take pride in my chosen devices. I searched for a very long time to find a laptop this thin, with this many features and I can firmly say that this is the best you're going to find. Closest thing to it would be the MBPr 2.3 GHz for $2200... So quite a bit more expensive, then again you're paying for the operating system.

Anyways, on to my review...

First off, this thing is fast. Very, very fast. The full-voltage core i7, GeForce GT 650m, and 8 GB of RAM make this laptop great for anything you throw at it, be it gaming, video editing, Photoshop, or just browsing the web. I have come from a gaming laptop, (Toshiba Qosmio x505-Q896) fully assuming I was going to be downgrading a bit in performance. I WAS WRONG. This thing is faster than my gaming machine. In every way it is better. More efficient, lighter, faster, and COOLER. (temperature wise, and just because it's badass)

The battery life, when compared to my gaming rig, is awesome! So for me this is great on battery life; I am aware that this machine is about average to low-end in it's category though. Runs for about 5 to 6 (if you're lucky) hours depending on what you're doing and what setting your brightness is on. Keep in mind, this machine packs a punch in a small package, so I think this is very reasonable. Should be plenty for most people.

Almost forgot, this laptop is BEAUTIFUL. It has great build quality and feels very sturdy in hand, considering it has an all metal body. The screen looks amazing. It has an auto-brightness feature that can be turned off by pressing fn + A which is kind of annoying for me, but helps battery life. But other than that it looks great!

This laptop also has the best sound out of any laptop I've heard so far. It has Bang & Olufsen speakers with an external subwoofer which for me, is essential. It also comes with Waves MAXXAudio which makes it sound even better.

Now to my gripes about the machine. Keep in mind these are mostly minor annoyances, not deal breakers. This laptop still deserves five-stars all the way.

1. I love Windows 8 and I love the natural scrolling that is supposed to come with Windows 8. (inverted scrolling) but Asus has taken this away from me and I am desperately wanting my inverted two finger scrolling back. I don't believe they use a Synaptics touchpad so I don't believe it would do any good to install the Synaptics driver that has this, so I'm just awaiting a software update to their Smart Gesure Suite that adds this feature.

2. My model came with an outdated, or just faulty wifi card driver that caused my laptop to disconnect from wifi and not reconnect until reboot after a while of use. This was fixed with a simple driver update from the intel wireless cards site, so I didn't have to send it in or anything.

3. REVIEWERS. Many reviews of this laptop have stated that the fan is too loud and complained about it constantly running. This laptop has a full-voltage quad-core i7 and a beefy graphics card in a very small chassis. Both of these things in a small space = HOT. The fan needs to be running to cool it down. Reviewers have also complained about the price. Yes, it is quite expensive. But it's more than you're getting from any other company and I've seen laptops with lower specs with around the same price. I'd say the price is about right.

Synopsis: Best laptop I've ever used. I love it. If you've got the cash, buy it. It won't disappoint. Works for gaming and any other application.

I nearly went crazy researching what new laptop to buy to replace my aging one. I would see a highly-rated laptop and be almost convinced to buy it, only to read users' experiences and find out they had major problems with it.

Finally, I settled on this ASUS Zenbook, and I'm extremely happy. The machine is fast, sleek, and lightweight, and I haven't had any problems with connectivity that other users reported with other ASUS machines. (I was also impressed with this vendor's offer to immediately assist with any problems but I haven't had any.)

I especially like that this laptop has a 15.6" screen and is wide enough for a numerical pad on the right. I use this laptop primarily for work, and both of those elements are major pluses. Staring at a smaller screen for 8-12 hours can get really tiring.

The only time I noticed any fan noise was one time in a very quiet room in my house; I really don't notice it 99% of the time. The laptop also doesn't seem to get hot at all.

The screen is BEAUTIFUL, and it's matte, so you get reduced glare (or none) when working in an office. I had never considered watching a movie on my laptop before, but this machine really makes me want to try it.

The laptop comes with Windows 8, which turns out to be not such a big deal. It was pretty easy to figure out (compared to when Microsoft moved to the ribbon in Office 2007, which was a nightmare), and really hasn't given me any problems. I'm fine with it, even though I don't use any of the swipe features. As a nice added feature, ASUS provides a little training feature app to show the user how to do certain things. Very thoughtful.

While this is an expensive machine, it gives me everything I need in a laptop in a sleek, fast package. I am so thrilled to have a fast start-up and close-down I'm doing a happy dance!

One note: this machine has two drives of 128 GB each, so the C drive is 128 GB, where you will need to put all your applications. While this is one of the largest SSDs available (within reasonable $$), it fills up remarkably fast, so plan accordingly.

I've never had an ASUS before, but it probably won't be my last. Nice, nice laptop.

Best Deals for ASUS Zenbook UX51VZ-DH71 2.10-3.10GHz i7-3612QM 12GB 256GB SSD

So far the best laptop I've ever owned. Which it should be given the price.

Chews through all the PC Games I've thrown at it so far. Which is a tribute to both the Core i7 & the 2GB Nvidia 650m.

My only complaint I screwed up on the order & got the separate 2 128GB SSDs. Don't make this mistake... get the single 256 or 512 if your wallet permits.

Honest reviews on ASUS Zenbook UX51VZ-DH71 2.10-3.10GHz i7-3612QM 12GB 256GB SSD

I have had only 1 laptop in the past a Dell that I have had since 2006. Needless to say it was time for a major upgrade. Being in college a fast computer, and multi tasking was difficult to do with my old laptop and my new ASUS has kept up with all my demands thus far. I bought this computer as a recommendation from a friend who got the 13in zenbook a year ago. I love the 2 sec start up and so far the battery life is as expected (can get a full charge from 10% in about an hour). I am still getting used to windows 8 but any complaints about that are not by fault of ASUS. I have always idolized the look of Apple's Macbook Pro, and this computer has that professional yet simple look. The only thing I can complain about thus far is a trackpad that is a little over sensitive. Because of the beefed up specs and 15 in screen, the laptop is a bit larger than other ultrabooks but to me it is still worth the money. In reviews I had read prior to buying this laptop, some people complained about the fan being too loud. I don't think this is a problem at all, there are plenty of other noises around the house that distract me rather than the noise of the fan... Overall, this is a great computer that I would recommend to anyone searching for an upgrade if you are like me, get ready to experiance and experiment with windows 8

The laptop itself is very light because it has solid state drive. I wish they can make the battery charger lighter, too.

When you take the laptop for the road the lightness of the computer itself is great but you still have to carry the heavy charger.

I love the sleek design of this laptop!

This is a great computer for someone that is looking for a decently powerful notebook but wants to remain in the sub-$1000 range. It has a quadcore AMD Phenom II CPU. Sadly it is a lower clock speed (1.6 Ghz) and it lacks L3 cache. It may struggle in single threaded applications compared to the Intel line up, but the difference in performance is hardly noticeable to the average user. In fact, I am perfectly happy with the CPU thus far.

Next I will discuss the graphics card, and this notebook actually has two. There is an integrated GPU which is an ATI Radeon 4200 series. This processor is activated when the notebook is on battery power. It consumes far less energy than the dedicated card and prolongs the battery life. The dedicated card is a ATI Radeon 5650 with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM. It is possible to switch between GPU's and by default the notebook automatically switches to the 4200 when unplugged and to the 5650 when plugged in. This card is very capable for this price range. I have only tested it with one game thus far. I was able to play Battlefield Bad Company 2 on medium graphics settings fairly smoothly. Games older than this should play on medium to high settings.

The 16-inch LED backlit screen is great and it provides a nice clean picture.

My only gripe with this notebook is the battery life. It is under 3 hrs, which is not great. Although for me it is not enough of a flaw to take off a star as I will be plugged in most of the time. Even when I am mobile I will not be far from a plug.

I also want to state that the previous two reviews where hasty in there complaints. This computer is capable of playing games and functions well with the ATI Radeon 5650. They were either not switched to 5650 or where using the battery and trying to play games.

I am very happy with my purchase and can see my self recommending Toshiba to friends.

Pros:

ATI Radeon 4200/5650 switchable graphics

16-inch LED screen

Backlit Keyboard

Windows 7

Not a fingerprint magnet

Speakers are pretty good

Price

Cons:

Battery life is only okay

5400 rpm Hard drive (I wish it was a 7200 rpm)

Limited bloatware (not as bad as other computer brands)

EDIT: I edited the review to correct my mistake about the amount of video RAM. I changed the review to reflect the correct amount of DDR3 RAM. There is in fact 1 GB instead of the previously stated 512 Mb.

I was very please when I received my new Toshiba within 3 days of ordering. The laptop is as specified, bar one specification. The specs both on Amazon and Toshiba's website show that the Laptop has gigabit ethernet, but mine only came with a fast ethernet card (10/100 Mbit speed). I have called Toshiba Tech Support to find out why this is so, as that was one of the specs that was on my must-have list. They have promissed to call me back in a couple of days, to try to resolve the issue. I await patiently, and will update this review, if I can. So a thumbs up for Amazon for great service, but I am afraid a thumbs down so far for Toshiba, for apparently not selling me the Laptop they advertised.

I wrote a previous review, but I had no idea what this laptop really was about!

I have installed EA's Battlefield bad company and it runs with the highest configuration. But the best I have played with this was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with highest values, and it runs smoothly with perfect sound and image.

Buy it, no doubt about it.

About the video card, it has a process running all the time which changes the display driver on the run when it is disconnected, but only if user allows it to do it. So, it comes with two video cards, one of them with 1GB accelerated video.

Great machine. I would buy it again!

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6059 LED TruBrite 16-Inch Laptop (Black)

I've been greatly pleased with my Satellite A665D: it seems solid, well-built, the keyboard LEDs are a useful feature, and the keyboard has the best feel of any laptop I've ever had. All my adjustment problems have been getting used to the differences between Vista and Windows 7. I've not done much in the way of stress testing the system, but it brings up Mass Effect 2 with no problem.

I don't know what to make of the comments regarding missing drivers. The Device Manager on my system reports both ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 adapters; both are said to be "working properly", the 5650 has an IRQ of 0xFFFFFFFD, and its driver DLLs show a raft of DLLs. I'm not in any way a hardware maven, but I certainly don't feel cheated. The system has a Windows' Experience rating of 5.9, with the limiting factor being the disk drive transfer rate. The Graphics and Gaming Graphics ratings are both 6.7, better than the ratings of any of its other components.

When I bought this laptop, I was looking for a lot of bang for the buck, and I think that I've got it.

Excellent performing laptop, the driver issue mentioned in the other reviews is a result of user error, not a problem with the machine. For the price, it runs games well. Left4Dead 2 at max settings averages about 30-35 frames per second and Assassin's Creed II at max runs about 20-25 frames per second. Included in my review are links to the proper drivers for the graphics card for both Vista and Win7.

I purchased this laptop in late 2009 for $500.00 brand new. For all its flaws, I could look past them knowing I'd never buy a then new computer that cheap. Not once have I had to take it in for maintenance! It's spared me the grief that a 2 year warranty would otherwise cover. I don't expect to have any serious problems with it. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 7 home premium, and ditch Vista. Mine came with a free upgrade, and it loads much faster.

Pros:

-10-Key pad! (This was what ultimately sold me.)

-Fast loading at startup and online.

-"Classic" desktop theme makes the computer compatible with older games and programs that required Windows XP to run.

-"Energy mode" makes the battery life much last for about 6 hours.

Cons:

-The shell is plastic. Try not to be careless with it.

-Portable, but not lightweight. (6.5 lbs)

-Unplugged, the battery life while internet surfing can barely make it two hours.

-Low end video card. (Nvidia 8200M) Will run "heavy" games like the sims 2, but this is not a gaming computer.

Best Deals for HP G60-445DX - Turion X2 RM-75 / 2.2 GHz - RAM 3 GB - HDD 320 GB

If you get this laptop at a reasonable price I would not deter you from buying it, otherwise choose another laptop. I am not against HP's cause I've experienced others that do not suffer from the same 'defects' as this.

1)Don't put this laptop on your lap, you will get 2nd or 3rd degree burns

2)Do not expect exceptional battery life (although the same can be said about half the pc's on the market today) but expect to be connected to the power cable for the most part

3)It may run slowly at times but to be fair be sure the cause of that is not user based

All in all it is not a bad machine but HP definitely needed to iron out these issues before releasing this product

For the price, I thought this would be a decent buy. The specs looked amazing on paper with a good processor, enough ram and memory. The big screen is nice too. It was nice having the HDMI and also SD/XD/etc card slot. Make sure you get the windows 7 upgrade too, it was well worth it.

Cons: As already mentioned, the battery is poor. I couldn't make it through a 2 hour class without it being plugged in. The battery was shot after a year. The computer itself heated up really fast... faster than any other laptop I have used; a friend told me that HP used cheap hardware for a couple of years, and that is why this model gets really hot. I also noticed early on, that the power supply connection was never secure, it seemed to wiggle easily. I also noticed that the CD drive was really loud, but that is understandable being it is a laptop.

My biggest complaint with this computer is its poor recording capability. This computer wasn't able to record anything of notable quality, from webcam videos to audio from lectures I attended (using one note). It always turned out bad, after multiple calls to customer support, re-installing drivers and updating them again, the problem was never solved. There are also multiple forums about users experiencing the same problems... just look up HP G60 recording issues.

For the price, this is an amazing value. The case, while made primarilly of plastic, isn't cheesy at all. The lid is made of aluminum and looks very nice, like units costing much more. The keyboard layout with the 10 key fits the shell well, the bonus is that the keys are separated from each other so there's less chance of getting stuff down between the keys nice! There are 2 USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port. The built in camera is adequate, the memory at 4GB is perfectly sized for this price range. I'm honestly surprised by how quick this AMD processor is, it's almost as fast as my Intel quadcore (non-hyperthreaded) 2.67 Ghz desktop. All nice features for a laptop in this price range. The primary reason for this purchase was to use it to browse the internet and email along with the occasional spreadsheet/word document. It performs beyond expectation in that catagory. Other benefits of this laptop are the bottom stays cool when running, and the battery life is great, about 5+ hours of use without recharging.

As an aside, it comes loaded with Windows 8, which admittedly takes a little getting used to. I can see after working with this OS that it would be beneficial to have a touch screen interface. It works okay without one after you get used to the quirks of Win8 and the "gestures" that you use to open the start screen, like swipe in to the touch pad from the computer shell on the right side, or switch applications by swiping in to the touch pad from the computer shell on the left side. The top down swipe motion in context sensitive. For non-touch screen computers I'd prefer it if Microsoft put the Win7 start menu back on the desktop interface. On touch screen based computers I'm sure I'd rather use the Win8 "start" interface.

At this point although early in the game I'm very happy with the results.

Just bought this computer and I am amazed at the build quality compared to my 3 year-old Dell. The processor is great and I just downloaded a Windows 7 shell in order to fix the Windows 8 issue.

The laptop itself is light and sleek looking. The feel of it is good and solid and the keyboard is similar to a Mac in its spacing and design. They are separated by a bit of space that would make it easier to clean. The battery life is pretty long. I've been using it on a single charge for about 6.5 hrs now and still have 25% remaining. The screen is pretty nice and crisp. Colors are nice and vivid. I haven't watched HD videos yet but so far it seems good.

The laptop comes preinstalled with windows 8. I don't mind it but I believe that Microsoft really intended for windows 8 to be use with a touch screen devise. You can go back to windows 7 if you choose by going to the Samsung website and following their instructions. I just received mine today so I'm going to give W8 a try.

The bad thing I can say about this model is that the mouse pad is not sensitive. I have to tap pretty hard for it to double click or even respond. The mouse pad response time is relatively slow compared to how fast I'm moving my fingers to items I want to click on. The computer also does not have a light or any kind of signal that would tell you whether number lock or caps lock is on. I used to have a Toshiba Satellite and I would say that I prefer Toshiba's mouse pad over this one.

Overall I would say that its a good laptop but it does take some getting used to. If you want a sensitive mouse pad that highly responsive I would advise you not to get this model. Other than that it seems like a good device. I'll post another review in about a month so you can see how it holds up to a Biology major/English Minor college student usage.

One Month Later: I ended up returning the laptop in favor of purchasing an Acer Aspire V5 due to all the problems I was having with the laptop. Some programs that I needed to run for my homework were unable to work. The processor speed scored a 2.2 out of 9 and I was unable to speed it up. Others buyers say that their laptop was great so maybe my unit was just faulty. On the positive side, Samsung customer service is great even though they couldn't help me much whenever I spoke to them.

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 3 NP365E5C-S02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

This laptop is fast and quiet. The wifi is ready to work while the start screen appears (very fast)... W8-64bit, the USB3.0 ports are much faster than 2.0 and this is a plus ! ! I was continously working a little more than 4 hours and the battery said 10%. I doubt another laptop with this kind of performance ! ! ! The W8 is completely different to the previous versions, and it is fast ! ! Now, I like it.... So this a new paradigm. We must adapt to do the same things in a different way. The aluminium body is great ! !

Mine is the 2.2 GHz with dual graphics card (no optical drive). Performance is excellent in spite of 5400 revolutions per minute drive. It is not actually one terabyte drive but ~950 gigabytes, plus the 24 gigabytes of solid state drive (hybrid?).

Opens programs quickly and less prone to poor multitasking as the hardware and system much improved over the tech from 2002 and 2007 that always dragged on when doing anything moderately intensive. However, when the disk becomes 10% fragmented, it slows down considerably, but this may be due to the 5400 RPM. It does use less battery and load on the hardware compared to 7200 RPM, but I am a bit surprised that Lenovo (still?) has no SSD-only options at the time.

A few problems with the hardware (not software), the webcam is horrible. Nothing ever comes out clearly. Extremely blotchy like a Nintendo DS, I mean, the DS 3D one I have is the worst of all cameras (except for the very first smartphones?). You cannot get good sound with the internal microphones, and software actually records in mono; not stereo. Adobe Audition does not record in stereo. This must be a bogus feature to believe you into recording stereo, as I have an ASUS tablet with stereo microphones, and its applications record in mono. This is a stupid thing companies do. What is nice is to have a Blue Yeti Pro USB microphone that actually does what it says it does, but does cost quite a bit.

Pretty good machine, but for recording audio and video work, this laptop is the last thing you want. Most people use their digital cameras anymore and a USB microphone, so this is proof that the internal cam/mic on a laptop is a gimmick.

Recommended for those who want good gaming and heavy graphic design work. However, Adobe CC works much better on it than does CS6. Illustrator is really slow compared to the latest version. Always upgrade, if you can afford it. (Disclaimer: Do your research before 'just upgrading,' as sometimes upgrades have problems and are a waste of money. I have gone through this a lot in life!)

Thank you.

Found out the hard way being that this laptop is opened and "modified" by the company selling it, the Lenovo Factory Warranty is VOIDED. So you are really taking your chances here buying a laptop that someone opened up and changed both the hard drive and memory, as you'll be SOL if it breaks down the road, as Lenovo will receive the laptop and just return it back to you saying your warranty is void because it's been opened and modified.

I use both Mac and Windows computers but when it came to finding a small computer for travel the Lenovo came out at the top of my list. I wanted something lighter than my 15.4 inch laptop. I also wanted to get a netbook from a company with a good track record for service which eliminated Dell and Asus from the list.

The Lenovo at 3.5 lbs is light and the 11.6 screen is XGA at 768 vs 600 lines of resolution. It has a separate AMD graphics processor which definitely helps with performance. The netbook does support two 4GB RAM modules for a total of 8GB of RAM.

It has WiFi with excellent reception and with 802.11n it is much faster than my old WiFi laptop. It also has a 1GB Ethernet connection which I use when transferring large files from a desktop computer to the netbook before a trip. The speed difference of the 1GB Ethernet is very noticeable and cuts file transfer times by 90%.

The keyboard is outstanding and has to be used to be fully appreciated. It has the action of a top quality aftermarket desktop keyboard and much better than any other I have used from HP-Compaq, Apple, Dell, or Toshiba. With a reduced size keyboard the extra feel of the Lenovo is much noticed and much appreciated. The best part is the pointer in the center which I find much easier to use than a touch pad when I cannot use a mouse, as when strapped into an aircraft at 30,000 feet.

The netbook also includes a SD card reader which some people may find useful. It has a HDMI port which I do find useful when traveling. I can take a HDMI cable and hook the netbook up to the LCD televisions I find in most hotel rooms.

All in all this laptop has met my needs, both for functionality and price. I didn't want to spend more than five on a laptop, and this was the perfect price for my needs and use.

I bought this for its:

1. speed (faster than my previous Atom-based netbook),

2. larger screen (11.6 is way better than 10.1)

3. matte screen (I don't like glossy displays) and

4. overall professional look.

Modifications I made:

1. Installed additional 4GB for a total of 6GB. Installation is very easy.

2. Switched the Fn and Ctrl keys virtually in the BIOS (there is a option), and physically by snapping them off with a credit card and snapping them into the switched locations. Now I have the Ctrl key in the bottom left, which is where most laptops have it.

What bothers me:

1. The fan (air-flow) sound level is relatively high, but am getting used to it. I subtract 1 star because of this.

2. An occasional 'clunk' sound from the hard drive sounds like a billard ball or mable dropped on a floor. I've researched this a bit looks like many disk drive brands have this issue could be fixed by firmware, but doesn't apparently affect the drive long term. However, I do backups regularly to make sure I don't lose any data.

Bonus:

1. Only slightly heavier than my previous Atom-based netbook, it is noticeable, but tolerable.

2. There are 2 sets of right and left mouse buttons at the top of the touchpad (for use with the trackbutton) and bottom of the touchpad (for use with the touchpad itself.) I'm getting used to using both sets.

Bottom line:

Better-than-netbook and almost-a-laptop. It's been a month or so since I bought this and I'm happy with it.

Cheers!

Specs alone tell a tale of incredible value:

7200RPM HDD (2.5" SATA drive compartment, so it'll take an SSD).

1.6GHz AMD E-350 dual-core processor within a 64-bit chipset.

Support for up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

Dedicated Radeon HD 6310 graphics processor.

Matte/antiglare HD display.

6-8 hour battery life.

VGA & HDMI output.

All for less than $250 (lightly used or refurbished on eBay).

This laptop is an absolute powerhouse. Performs as well as, if not better than, anything running an Intel Core i3 with similar components. Plays modern PC games (with the obvious exception of stuff like Crysis) at around 40-50 frames per second on low settings. Nothing special, but entirely playable and certainly impressive for a computer of this price and stature. I personally use it to produce & perform with Ableton Live & FL Studio (with a larger external monitor of course).

Highly demanding tasks aside, this computer is an absolute must-buy if you're in the market for an ultraportable device.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad X120e 0596A28 11.6" LED Notebook E-350 1.6GHz

In simple terms:

Nice hardware. Definately Lenovo is pulling out well built stuff. I've used IBM/Lenovo for many years at the office; that's why I purchased this for my wife.

If you're looking for a netbook kind of use equipment; this a netbook killer. However, for the specifications and price (this is a Notebook, not a Netbook!)I expected faster performance. We actually use it for browsing purposes and a few Home-Office features and yet, not the expected performance for such simple tasks.

Finally, the battery. Regular use, mostly connected. Two months and it doesn't hold a charge for more than 1 hour. It could be a defectous one; however, it happened to be in mine.

Hope the review is useful.

Great design. A bit slow at booting up. Unfortunately, it came with a 5400 rpm hard drive instead of the 7200 rpm I assumed would be there. No biggie. Once the thing gets going, it works great!

Wow! I am an early adopter of technology and an engineer go figure. My wife accidentally damaged (beyond repair) my favorite super powerful laptop FX7811. Suddenly I am trying to evaluate new laptops. The Ultrabooks are the latest thing and the bleeding edge of technology is the 10 point touch screen combined with FHD full high def. Most laptops offer a limited slate of the right technology, at high prices, others are cheap and easily convince you of the same. I studied them all for two months solid and settled on the top of the line (but not yet released) ASUS ux500vz touch for an as yet (still) unnamed price probably upwards of $2500. After becoming weary of waiting on ASUS delays with manufacturing setbacks and their general lack of information regarding releases and availability schedules, sketchy or incomplete spec information, and no pricing, I was left uncertain as to whether or when and at what cost my dream ultrabook might be on the market.

Feeling like it was time to make a move and interested in optimizing the price away from the top of the line ASUS (it was also too big for what I wanted my last was a great 1900x1200 dpi 17 inch screen with a dedicated graphics card. It weighed 10+ pounds and was worth it! BUT I was ready for a slice of new technology via a cool, thin, lightweight ulrabook. Enter the HP Spectre XT. Researched it and knew immediately it was the right combination of technology for me. Long story short, saw this version (not available for custom build on HP site or in any stores or on line at least as far as I was able to find), and knew instantly the price point was significant for what you got. I personally tried the ACER super ultrabook the S7 and found it very impressive but not very ergonomically friendly too thin to be comfortable, and with sharp edges (which are needed for structural ridgidity in an ULTRA thin laptop), but not friendly to the touch. Unfortunately, it also had some software problems and a warped case. The HP blew it away. 12 GB of RAM! What? The rest of the also rans have 4. The premiums have 6 and a couple have 8. None with 12, except HP. And try to get a FHD screen, not 1320x768 (crap avoid at all cost), not first level high definition 720p (1600x900), but a FULL HIGH DEF 1080p TOUCH SCREEN (1920x1080), which is very hard to find, at any price. Get it You will thank me later. I also purchased and used for a month an ACER M5, which is a great size and quality ultrabook, with a built in DVD drive built in! Uncommon in an ultrabook. (BUT it has a crap screen quality so it will have to go back otherwise much better ergonomically than the super slick S7 big brother which has a great screen too BTW (but suffered otherwise from ills above).

So at the end of the day, the stealthy and unsuspecting HEWLETT PACKARD EASILY WINS in this configuration with its sexy looks, silky operation, nice software bundle (photoshop and premier elements, etc.!), and upgrades by an authorized HP modifier and reseller. Way above what I would expect from HP but they did it. Keep your money on shore and be not afraid of this Ultra gorgeous Ultra powerful laptop! I ordered it sight unseen, based on its specs and price point BOY WAS I NOT DISAPPOINTED!! FIVE STARS!! THANKS!!!

I will ring in again later after I have had more time with this beauty for a follow up review. Meanwhile get yours on Amazon from these guys!

UPDATE 2-12-13 Well after a month of heavy use, I can affirm all my initial feelings were correct. This is the finest laptop I have ever owned or seen. I have no complaints. Still getting used to Windows 8, but then Microsoft's monopoly is not a democracy so might as well get used to it. Overall W8 is a very good product. Looking forward to growing with it. Touch screen is something we should have had long ago. Cant imagine a non touch laptop using windows 8. What a technology steal from Apple (who refuses to make a touch screen laptop or desktop because they don't think they are useful or ergonomic). I find myself switching from keyboard and mouse to touch screen in a fluid and almost natural way. Thanks to Microsoft for developing the Ultrabook concept. It is just what the laptop world needed. for that matter (still haven't seen an actual ASUS 500uv touch but this one is smaller and lighter so who cares?) And thanks to HP for this beauty! Still wowed over this thing. Finally thanks to the reseller ELUKTRONICS!! Not sure about the name, but when your product and service are this good, who cares?!! Spot on! The only thing that could have been better is to have dedicated graphics and twin SSD's something I talked to them about. Working on it, but internal size considerations make it impossible for now. Besides you would have to pay a battery life premium if they were to find a way to mount a dedicated graphics card. As well, the Intel HD 4000 really does a bang up job and very nicely fits with the ultrabook concept of maximum power per pound and watt!!

I chose this laptop due to the mSata SSD and secondary hard drive over a pure SSD solution. Eventually, I intend to replace the hard drive with an SSD for performance and battery consumption.

The touch screen wasn't a primary part of the decision process, but it works very well. The visual quality from the display is incredible.

Speakers aren't bad, but I still prefer headphones or an external speaker system. There's only so much you can do with the size requirements.

All of the performance attributes met my expectations. I didn't intend to play any modern games on it, so the lower graphics scores haven't been a factor. I've played some older standby games and they seem to run without any issues.

I bought this laptop as an upgrade from my MacBook Pro; I wanted something reliable and well built. I got just that. The only big issue I ever had with the laptop was, about 2 months after I bought it, it crashed and wouldn't start up again. However, I got introduced to HP's tech help program, and once you get past the "yes, my warranty is still valid" section, you're treated like a first class customer, getting answers to emails quickly, in depth responses, and friendly service.

One thing I want to highlight that I didn't know when buying the laptop (based on the Amazon description) is that this is NOT A QUAD CORE PROCESSOR like I had assumed. It is dual core. That having been said, the most intense things I do on it are gaming (the latest and greatest) and the Adobe Creative Cloud apps. Despite the fact that it is a dual core device, I haven't seen much difficulty running these programs maybe I'm just not doing complicated enough stuff, or maybe I'm just not picky with frame rates (though it really doesn't seem all that bad). Still, though, occasionally it does crash if I'm doing too many things at once such as rendering something while at the same time streaming video while also transferring files from one drive to another.

The 12GB is very nice as well. Overall, this is probably one of the best windows based laptops on the market right now, for the price. Especially considering the touch functionality. The SSD allows apps to start up quickly and makes the OS start up in record time. I feel like I'm running the power of a mac on a PC. That having been said, I don't like the direction Microsoft is going with touch functionality, and I see myself getting a mac once I graduate from college with a degree in CS.

The 4 stars is mostly because the device is dual core while much cheaper options are quad-core, but maybe I'm just being picky. Regardless, I give this device my official recommendation to anyone with the money and the need for a powerful portable windows-based computer.

Honest reviews on HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook 15t-4000 (Silver); Intel Core

this HP spectre is super fast with Intel I-7, and SSD drive plus a 500Gig harddrive. Starts up in like 15 sec.

I've tried several laptops with windows 8. Did not like them some did not have a touch screen, one was a major brand with touch screen but touch screen was slow and only had two point touch. Just not happening for me.

Then I tried this HP Spectre xt touchsmart ultrabook with intel I-7, 256gig SSD plus 500gig harddrive 2 3.0 USB ports, a 2.0 port with charging while shut down. also thunderbolt port, for larger external storage. Bluetooth 4.0 so pair it with your smart phone. This touchscreen is fantastic and windows 8 makes sense with this computer. I added the BD external drive and on USB 3.0 is fast.

Windows 8 can be setup just the way you want with this laptop and I now enjoy using windows 8 and this laptop.

Would recommend any one looking for a touch screen windows 8 laptop, look at this before you buy another. The only people who might want to look at something different is extreme gamers. This doesn't have a fast graphics card, graphics is on the motherboard.

Can't beat this ultrabook

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook 15t-4000 (Silver); Intel Core

I'm very impressed with this ultrabook. It has an unbelievable amount of power in such a small and attractive form factor. The 1080p IPS touchscreen is simply gorgeous. I usually prefer matte displays and was a little worried about the glossy finish, but this screen doesn't reflect too much light. With Windows 8, UEFI, and the upgraded 256 GB SSD, this machine boots in seconds and applications load instantly. I'm glad that I maxed out the RAM to 12 GB – I use about 3 GB under casual use, more under heavy load, so 12 GB should help prevent any necessary upgrades in the near term.

The multi-gesture trackpad is large and performs very well – I always find myself using the two finger scroll gesture. The keyboard is large and spacious, although I wish the up and down arrow keys weren't so small and close together. Battery life is somewhat poor, but I knew that before purchasing. I haven't run any rigorous battery tests yet, but it seems to only get about 4 hours with my current power settings.

I'm still undecided as to how useful touchscreens are on a laptop, but I do find myself using it more and more. However, I didn't want to buy a Windows 8 laptop without one. Since Microsoft is pushing touch-centric applications, I didn't want to force myself into obsolescence in the event that it takes off.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with this laptop and seller!

I currently own 5 laptops. They range from small netbooks and tablet PC's to a 17" HP Entertainment laptop. As a contractor I used the 17" for all my meetings and it served its purpose well. The problem is I wanted something smaller, and a longer lasting battery.

I had looked at the envy 15 but it runs hot even while idle. I just did not like the heat on my palms as I typed. After much research the envy 13 seemed to meet all my requirements. ITs a very portable laptop and even with the slice (extra battery) attached its thinner and lighter than all my other laptops.

Even when playing graphic intensive games it does not break a sweat. As for the battery/s I'm getting about 11 hours of constant use with Bluetooth on and wifi off. With wifi and Bluetooth on and streaming movies I get about 7 hours of constant use.

The laptop is small so the IO ports are at a minimum. It only has two USB ports so I purchased a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse and it works perfect. The included external DVD drive gets its power from the USB and also acts as a USB hub supplying 2 ports.

There does not seem to be any user accessible panels on the laptop so you can't change the hard drive of update the memory. Even though the laptop has only 3GB installed it does have windows 7 64-bit installed and can handle up to 5GB. But currently I see no way to upgrade.

One thing I noticed is that the laptop has an accelometer installed so it can detect movement. When on the battery it will park the hard drives if you pick up the laptop. This is indicated by a small orange LED that turns on in place of the normal white hard drive LED.

The speakers are probably the weakest point on the laptop. They just don't have any output for most movies so you will have to use earphones or purchase a external speaker set. I got a pair of those tiny USB powered HP speakers and they have plenty of volume and are small enough to keep in my laptop bag.

As will all laptops there is quite a lot of bloteware installed. It took me three solid days to get rid of all the crap but now the machine runs at between 0-2% CPU usage when idle.

Would I purchase the laptop again? The answer is definitely YES.

I really expected more from HP. I read great reviews about this laptop, and most of them were right on the money: A good attempt to a different breed of PCs but falling short on key points.

I was close to send it back but i kept it at the end mainly because of the size and weight and also because i needed a sturdy laptop. These are the key points that prevented the HP Envy from being a magnificent machine and a true contender against Apple:

Battery life not even close to 5 hours nor 16 with the additional battery: HP really oversold the battery capacity here. Expect to get 2 hours at the most when using wifi. With the extra battery you probably could get 5 to 6 hours but that's it. And then the weight goes from 3.8 pounds to 5.3 so, not so light to get more juice. My wife owns a MacbookPro that she uses for 5 to 6 continuous hours with no sweat and definitely less strain on her arm.

Trackpad: The worst ever. I thought that because of the product age (about 6 7 months now) they had come up with a better driver for it. Nope. It still stinks. Clicks are limited to a tiny area in the trackpad. Why did HP make such a big trackpad with no buttons (a la Mac) but limit the area where you can click? Doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Price: If you are conscious about money and need to save some money look elsewhere, this is not worth the money you pay. Again, I kept it only because the magnesium casing was important to me but you probably can find something similar from Asus or Dell where you can save some dough.

Hp envy 13 1030nr review

Purchased the envy 13 back in February. I've been very pleased. I travel extensively and use my computer constantly. I run zillions of apps at once so I'm always after a laptop that is small, yet has plenty of power.

You certainly do not get the battery life that HP suggests with the machine. I get 2-3 hours with the small battery and 5-7 total with the added battery slice. The plus side is that machine comes with the battery slice. On my last Sony laptop I paid $200 for an extra battery. I do run the machine most of the time on full power setting because I need the extra power to run all of my apps.

The machine runs cool and has been a joy to use. It is definitely classy and fairly powerful. I upgraded the machine to 5gb ram myself. The extra 2gb give the machine a little more zip, but I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker. Do NOT attempt this yourself unless you are a laptop tech, it involved taking the computer completely apart.

My last laptop was a Sony Z series, which was amazing and more powerful than this machine. However, I'm enjoying the class and slightly smaller size of the envy.

Here are some thoughts:

Wifi signal very strong

Bluetooth signal not as strong as my Sony Z.

Glossy screen very bright, but I prefer glossy screens that don't reflect as much.

Sound great (I did have to turn up one hidden sound volume setting)

The mouse pad took me an entire month to get used to. It is by far the worst part of the computer. However, now that I am used to it, I really like it. I love the fact that I can use a finger swipe to enlarge a web page or photo. I can open an email and quickly enlarge the text with mouse pad.

I love having the hdmi port and also purchased the hdmi to vga adapter from hp. The computer came with a usb to Ethernet adapter. I also upgraded to Windows 7 Professional because of the included XP virtual software so that I can run some older apps that don't work in 7 64bit. The virtual XP works great on the envy.

Even though it is not as powerful as my Sony Z series, I'm really glad I purchased the Envy. The classy look, bright screen, smaller size, included second battery, and decent amount of power make it a great choice.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY 13-1030NR 13.3-Inch Magnesium Alloy Laptop (Windows 7 Home

My new job allowed me to purchase my own laptop with a $1400 budget....yeah, not a bad start. So I shopped around looking for something as far away from the Lenovo business look I am used to. I am not a Mac person at all but I had to be fair and check out the MacBook and MacBook Pro. All seemed to be the same in price and similar in specs but our company didn't support Mac (yet) and they offered a free download of Microsoft Office Business 2007 and lots of other PC based software. If I went Mac I would have to come out of pocket for this software and probably more. Couple hundred bucks, right?

So I looked around at Acer, MSI, Dell and ended up spotting this lil beauty. So far, so good. I will say the only disappointing feature is the battery life "claim". I get around 2 1/2 3 1/2 hrs of battery without the slice battery just on the 4cell. With the slice battery I would say it added another 3-6 hrs in various types of use. So it's not bad especially with the slice option but it is no where near the 10+ hrs it claims on the HP site. The design is sleek and sexy. I really like the monolithic style screen and have used the webcam to chat with my kids when I travel. The keypad is great but the trackpad does take some getting used to. For me, this isn't a huge issue since I use a retractable mouse at home, at the office and when I travel.

It came with Win 7 64 bit and Core Duo processor is really fast. I never intended to run heavy apps on this but use regularly use Google Chrome, MS Outlook, Lotus Notes and MediaMonkey at the same time and they all run very smoothly. The laptop isn't too loud or noisy but I added an application to make sure it stays quiet and cool.

On a side note, there is only HDMI out so I recently ordered the HDMI to VGA adapter from HP for when I have to present but have yet to test it out.

All in all, I am pretty stoked about my HP Envy 13. As I said in the title, not too shabby of a laptop.

I bought two of these for employees at work. I prefer the basic Apple models, which I have, for $1000, and it performs much better, better battery, and integrated disc drive. This model has a separate disc drive, which is not as good, and today the hard drive crashed. Of course it's two months after warranty. I have to have Windows applications due to working with Medicare, but my Apple is much much better, and costs less. Didn't want to add Windows to an Apple, that seems like an oxymoron to me...?
