This laptop met and exceeded all of my standards.

I'm a grad student and my computer needs are admittedly pretty basic (Internet, Word/Excel, the occasional game, etc.); however, I wanted a computer with specs that weren't going to be completely obsolete in the next four years. I move around a lot and I'm constantly whipping my laptop out, so I needed something light and easily transportable. Also, seeing as how I am a grad student, I couldn't break the bank.

PROS

Battery life. The 8-9 hour figure is not an exaggeration. This is by far one of the nicest features. I go out all day without bothering to bring my power cord along. It's about 6PM as I write this; I've been on my laptop repeatedly throughout the day since 8AM, and I still have 2.5 hours of battery life to go. Love it.

Performance. With an i5 Sandy Bridge processor and 4GB of memory, the speed is definitely noticeable. I regularly have 20-30 tabs and windows open at any given time and I've never noticed a drag. I realize that that isn't saying much for those who really like to milk the performance out of their computer -so you probably want to refer to other reviewers on this factor -but as an average user I'm very satisfied with the speed. I should also note that this laptop doesn't run hot. Ever.

General design. Everything is very well laid out. The chiclet keys are great, the trackpad isn't annoyingly off to one side, the click of the mouse isn't loud (a personal pet peeve), and there are no unnecessary buttons cluttering up the keyboard. I wasn't sure about the cobalt blue at first but now I rather like it; it's toned down enough that the laptop still looks professional, if that's a concern.

Portability. I'm constantly moving from place to place throughout the day, and it's so nice to be able to pull my computer out whenever I need it. It starts up very quickly upon re-opening so I can jump back on it right away.

Price. $699 honestly feels like a steal for the quality of this laptop. I did a lot of research before buying it and I think this laptop is the best value out of all the comparable computers in its price range.

Other minor perks: The webcam resolution is surprisingly good, and there's a little programmable button on the keyboard that you can use for whatever you like.

I'll let other reviewers comment on the speakers because I'm honestly not enough of an audiophile to properly assess the quality. For the basic stuff I use them for (Grooveshark playlists, YouTube cat videos, etc.) I have no complaints.

Also, it should be noted: This laptop DOES have an optical drive. I don't believe that it's mentioned in the specs above.

CONS (read: minor annoyances)

It comes preloaded with crapware so be prepared to do a clean install of Windows 7 if you feel so inclined.

I sometimes hit the Fn button when I'm trying to hit Ctrl. They're both pretty small keys and right next to each other.

It's probably a matter of adjusting a setting, but I'll occasionally brush the trackpad in such a way that I zoom in and out of whatever window I'm working in, which is a little annoying.

Bottom line:

This is a fantastic little machine, perfect for students and people who are on the go a lot.

I got my AS4830TG-6450 today. Machine looks good out of the box. Light weight and has very good finish.

I just began as per the quick start instructions. I put the machine on charge, turned it on, completed initial configuration and set up. Battery was showing 73%. I wanted it to be 100% before I could actually test the battery life. While it was on charge, I got rid of most crapwares. I let Windows install all the updates. Activated and updated AV (It comes with 60 days trial of McAfee will switch to AVG soon :) ). Got rid of all Start-up programs those are not useful.

It took 12-14 sec to shut down and 30-35 sec to boot. Data transfer with USB 3.0 was amazing. It took approx 12 sec to transfer 1 GB of data from my portable hdd (3.0) to laptop hdd. At point I had 15-16 tabs opened in IE, WMP running, Canon utility programs running, MS word running at the same time and there was no lag in performance of this machine. It works at pretty good speed.

Chiclet Keyboard is good. Every key stroke is recognized. Track pad is smooth and good. Keys are set up in bit different positions than my earlier Dell and HP. But, it's not a trouble. Camera is average, but i am not bothered with it. It works fine for me on Skype :)

Heard horn liked tone from in-bulit speakers when used on Skype (But only once). Sound quality looks good otherwise. Would try it connecting to external speakers.

Screen resolution is very good. It looks bright. Core I5, 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 650GB hdd, 14" LED/LCD display is not a unique combination and there are many machines available in market with this combination. But, there are few things which makes this purchase worth -

1) NVIDIA with 1GB of VRAM is a plus. Haven't tried it though for gaming!

2) When it was charged to 100 %, I restarted the machine and let it run without AC power. I am using it since 5 hours now and it is still showing me 4 hours of charge left. Well, battery may will discharge faster if I pull more out of hardware (run/burn DVDs or continuously transfer data). But for an user like me, who spends most of the time on internet, looks 8-9 hours of battery life very much achievable with this machine.

3) It does not get hot. This is outstanding.

4) $699 is a steal for a machine of this quality.

This is my first Acer and I am very much satisfied with my purchase.

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830TG-6450 14-Inch Aluminum Laptop (Cobalt

Very nice laptop with amazing performance. 4 cons but not deal breakers for the price.

I was skeptical about the combination of colors but the blue and silver design of the body of the laptop are very eye catching, it looks professional and has a very solid build (The screen frame material is annoying though, see cons below).

14" screen size is just perfect with 1366 x 768 resolution, it's the same resolution as the 15.6" but in a smaller package.

Performance is excellent, very very fast. Laptop came with 4gb (2gb x 2gb) of ram, it was very fast but still upgraded it to 6gb (2gb x 4gb) for even faster multitasking. Don't really need 8gb.

Windows Experience Scores: Processor: 7.0, Memory (6GB RAM): 7.4, Graphics: 5.9, Game graphics: 6.7, Primary hard disk: 5.8

The NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M with 1GB DDR3 VRAM graphics card did an excellent job for a laptop and a big difference if your going heavy on video usage like playing mid-high graphics games. Played Starcraft II and WOW it was awesome no hiccups, video was flawless and very clear at ultra performance. Make sure you purchase an external cooling system though cause like all laptops it will really heat up when playing games (I got the Cooler Master NotePal U1 Notebook Cooler with 1 Fan R9-NBC-8PAK-GP. It's small, fits nicely underneath and does an excellent job keeping it cool! It also inclines the laptop for easier typing and places screen higher so you don't have to hunch your back and look down).

Laptop fans are on the quiet side and don't really heat up unless your playing games, running power hungry programs or seriously multitasking. I would still purchase the extra cooling noted above.

Battery ran for 5 hours working on normal day to day stuff on integrated graphics, highest screen brightness and @ 2.40GHz full power no turbo boost.

640 GB @ 5400 RPM hard drive, space and speed are more than enough. Would not upgrade to 7200 RPM because of prior bad experience, it will make accessing info faster but this laptop is fast enough! I stay away from faster drives anyway, after a few months they get annoyingly noisy and heat up to the point that it literally burns your laptop. So leave it as is! Never tried solid state drives though, so I can't really say anything about those.

8X DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer Drive is all I need, no Blu-ray is ok for me.

Speakers are of pretty good quality for a laptop. Like it says, it's professionally tuned not very loud but you get a well balanced sound. The speakers are not at the back top like it seems, they are placed at the front bottom part of the laptop...not an issue really.

HDMI is priceless for connecting to TV or a bigger screen, always a must have in any laptop now a days.

3 usbs are enough for a portable to move around.

Bluetooth is a nice extra but I don't really use it.

Chiclet keyboard is extremely comfortable to type on. Not had any problem with keys.

Cons

Screen quality looks good but not as neat and bright when compared to my Sony laptop. If you're not picky then you won't even notice it. I gave it 4 stars because of this minor issue for me but may be a big issue for others.

Why or why do they keep using the smudge magnet reflective material for the screen frame, I just don't get it. Nice and shiny but put your fingers on it and it looks dirty.

A little heavy for the size.

Battery is built-in so you won't be able to remove it easily. Not a problem really but if you ever spill liquid on it you won't be able to rapidly cut all power so no circuits get fried. Battery power is cut though when you remove the back lid to add extra memory.

It was a very good purchase @ $699. Exceeded my expectations! I did my research and nothing comes close to this price performance wise. So, if you don't want to spend much on an excellent 14" laptop with great looks and the cons won't be a problem for you then this is the one. Enjoy!

*Updated on 12/02/2011 Added a few things...some more pros and 1 con. I've had it for like a month now and I'm extremely happy with this little monster. Fastest laptop I have ever had!

I discovered the CostCo version (4830T-6841) of this PC on the way to Bestbuy and ended up buying it, despite its lack of a separate number pad, after quick comparison shopping at Bestbuy. It was listed for $599 and came with all the specs above, but with 6G RAM, no Bluetooth, and *no crapware*! After I finished initial setup, there was precisely 1 icon on my desktop, the Recycle Bin. But it also included Office Starter (Word & Excel) and MS Signature security. The latter was new to me, but far preferable to Norton or McAfee trial versions, not least because it promised no annual renewal requirements.

Both the keyboard and the trackpad feel solid and big enough for my hands. I solved the number pad problem at BestBuy by getting a $65 Logitech solar-powered wireless keyboard (with num pad) that will work with either my laptop or my netbook (an Acer AspireOne 722 with a spongy keyboard and jumpy trackpad), as will my earlier-bought Logitech mouse. So I can leave one tiny USB unifying receiver plugged into each PC that works for both input devices. But they will only work if one or the other PC is asleep or out of wireless range. (Otherwise they get confused about which control tower they're talking to.)

During setup, I kept marveling at how little heat the new processor generated. When I finally turned the PC off after 8 hours of constant usage, it was only as hot as my little Acer netbook gets after 1 hour of minimal activity. The speed was less of a surprise because I was replacing a 4-year-old HP dv4 laptop with a 32-bit processor.

After the battery was fully charged, I unplugged it and got exactly 4 full hours of very heavy I/O usage from it: (1) downloading and installing files from the web and across our local wireless network; (2) copying massive files from my Seagate external HDD (which took 15 min to load all my photos on the USB 3.0 port, after taking about 2 hours to copy them off the old HP with its USB 2.0 ports); and (3) all the while playing music CDs at full volume (sharp, but not very loud, and not very bassy on the new PC) and keeping the screen fully lit. The next day, I got about 8-9 hours of battery life, leaving it unplugged on my desktop and using it intermittently throughout the day in more typical fashion, allowing it to sleep from time to time.

The most annoying feature for me is the placement of all the connectors in the front half off the base (to make room for the vent on the left and optical drive on the right), where any USB 2.0 device on the right side risks getting repeatedly bumped by my mouse hand. And the wires from any video, HDMI, and USB 3.0 devices on the left leave little room for reference materials or coffee cups close by.

This review is solely based on the keyboard and mouse buttons. I didn't have the computer long enough to tell you about the rest of it. I didn't like the rickety feel of the keyboard (not very stable) and I didn't like that the mouse buttons were connected/difficult to push. I recommend trying a computer in the store before buying it, because you can't experience the "feel" of one unless you get your own hands on it.

This is not a recommendable product. The global support is very deficient, my laptop has problems with the Wi-Fi and I still waiting for the technical support answer since two weeks ago. If you can do it, choose other brand or model.

I ordered one of these from Dell sight unseen. I ordered the Ubuntu Linux version customized with an 8gb SSD, 1gb of RAM, no Bluetooth and no Webcam. it's a great little computer. I mostly got it for checking email, surfing the web and making Skype calls while I'm traveling. Small size and light weight were the main features I was looking for. The Mini 9 is half the size and weight of my full size laptop.

I chose Dell over Asus and Acer because I think Dell makes better quality products. The Asus eeePC looks kind of cheaply made. I didn't order the Acer, because I've had hardware problems with Acers in the past and Acer tech support pissed me off. The HP netbooks look good, but I've been a bid Dell fan for years. Dell is also the only manufacturer that ships netbook computers with Ubuntu, the most popular Linux operating system. I am switching to Linux because Microsoft pissed me off with Windows Vista. I switched to Ubuntu Linux on my full size old Dell laptop as well.

So here is my review. This little computer is very solid and well built. I think it will last for years, like the other Dell products I've owned in the past. The battery life is good. It's rated at 4 hrs, but other reviewers claim 3 1/2 hours. That's still pretty good. The card reader slot is a nice feature. I picked up a 4gb SD card from Amazon for $10 for extra storage. Some XP users even get a 16gb SD card and move their My Documents folder to it do save hard drive space. The 8.9 inch 1024x600 screen is very sharp. It's a great quality screen, but it is kind of small. Oldsters will need to get out their reading glasses to use it. I think any computer this small would have the same problem though. I would give this computer 5 stars, but the keyboard takes some getting used to. Some of the keys like ' are hard to find and the shift key is small. I find myself hitting the touchpad while typing and it makes the cursor jump all around. Now I use a USB mouse instead of the touchpad. It works a lot better that way. I can live with the small keyboard. It's just a compromise for the small size, weight and portability.

Computer didn't come with Microsoft internet. Also had a few scratches on the outside. Otherwise it was in fairly desent condition. Felt like I paid to much for it to have scratches and for there not to be any programs on it. I'm having to send to the geek squad and have programs installed in order to use. I originally got this for my 9 year sons birthday and he couldn't even use it. He enjoys netflix and I couldn't install the programs in order to use it. My son was really bummed. It did arrive on time.

include the SSD failure after only 3 years.

You can bet, dell tech support will cost as much as a replacement SSD (about $50 for 16gb).

Really, a defective product.

I ordered my Dell Mini 9 on 9/20/08. The battery has failed and won't charge. I wish I had checked other brands before I ordered this one. The hard drive is small and there is no CD/DVD drive. I purchased an external drive (Targus) and found that I had to purchase software to support the DVD drive. Very disappointed.

I've just upgraded from an older T21 to T23, because I love Thinkpads. The design is sleek and strict, without unnecessary brightness and buttons. The LCD screen is sharp, and much brighter than those I saw on Compaq. It is very slim and light, so perfect for travel. It is fast. The swappable drives take 30 seconds to change. etc. and etc.

Importantly enough, it is an excellent IBM's customer support. T-series has 3-year warranty. When I had to change a part on my older T21, I sent it on Tuesday and they returned the laptop on Thursday same week (at their cost, of course!). Online support is also superb.

You can look at ebay for good deals, but beware of possible scum! Buy it!

I bought one of these about four years ago from a surplus reseller. Installed XP Pro and Office 03.

All ran great for -well, four years. Admittedly, I abused the hell out of this unit. I more than deserved the failure, and was not surprised when it happened.

Reasons this ThinkPad is great:

-Tough (as mentioned above).

-Designed for WAY more ram than other computers sold at the time of its manufacture.

-Display gives a clear, sharp image.

-File download matrix available at Lenovo.com -all the drivers you'll ever need to restore this to factory functionality.

-Bullet-proof (unless you "attack it with an ax" as I did).

-Slim titanium frame (light, strong, dissipates heat well).

-Parts readily available (It's a ThinkPad!!!)

Finally, it failed about 3 months ago when I dropped it.

Simply putting old (sound) drive into a new enclosure and cloning it to the new unit. Strongly advise buying one if you need a reliable, inexpensive computer and you don't need a lot of processor speed

Pros:

The laptop is considerably light for its monitor size.

It's very attractive and glossy.

The keyboard has a good tactile response.

Excellent heat dispersion (so far; it hasn't had time to build up dust or anything)

Cons:

The glossy finish makes this a fingerprint magnet. Be careful if you're anal about these things!

Intel HD graphics are adequate for productivity, but don't expect cutting-edge gaming.

Computer ships with OS on separate partition, making file management tedious unless you reinstall yourself.

Detail:

I bought this computer about a week ago as a "mobile hub" for my college career (computer science). In terms of size, this strikes a good chord between functionality and portability. It's considerably lighter than it looks in the pictures, but nothing has a cheap feel to it. The track pad has a nice grain feel to it, and the edges are tapered to give a smooth feel at the corners; it's responsiveness is a little questionable, though. Finally, the computer has a very attractive and clean layout, but its high-gloss design is a real fingerprint magnet. Watch out if you're a neat freak, as you'll be spending a lot of time wiping off smudges.

I have this laptop since yesterday. I have had no problem whatsoever with the laptop. I was initially discouraged when I heard that people were having trouble with the touch pad and the media keys, but I personally have not found any tidiousness with them.

Pros:

Sleek design

Sound is good

4 gb of ram is more than enough to run any program (Corel, Sony Vegas are no biggie)

-The Dell Dock is very productive and efficient, (same or even better than Apple's dock)

Cons:

-Obsidian Black is a finger print magnet. (you will need to clean your laptop almost twice a day)

-I do not know why but microsoft ranged my laptop a 3.2/7.1

-Battery runs out pretty fast. With Win 7 power saver and dells plan as well you could get 3 1/2 hours tops.

I would highly recommend this laptop and I have no regrets on buying it so far.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

Had a latitude that died. Bought this laptop to replace it for business use. Biggest probs with it is print spooler continuously shuts off and you have to go thru 5-6 clicks to restart it several times a day. Very frustrating. Called dell support the first week. Was on hold for 45 minutes in the queue waiting for tech help. Once I got a live person (from india) he immed began a hard sell for the 270 dollar warranty package because I neede assTtce with software issues. When I called him on it and said "this is a hardware issue and dell's problem. are you refusing to even hear about the problem in an attempt to sell me something," he promptly hung up on me. I had wasted an hour. Dell support is a joke.

The other issue is the mousepad gets stuck pretty often, either blocking text when I don't intend to--forcing me to lift my hand and do a double tap or right click to turn off the blocking.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

Hey Guys,

I bought this directly from Dell, The good things are:

Very light weight very easy to carry around everywhere

Very thin Unless you are comparing it to macbook air or something like that, its extremely thin.

Very Fast the I3 processor is very fast

Perfect Balance of Speed and Mobility easy to carry around everywhere(Believe me, I do carry this around everywhere. I dont use radio in my car but take this laptop to listen to audio books and podcasts.....Geek all the way...lol)

Here are the negatives:

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I just tried to get some warranty service done, and they make the follow up calls in next couple of days, but they call you around after 10:30 at night. even after i asked them to stop, they called me again at midnight!!!!absolute harassment.

First and FOREMOST the mouse pad(or finger pad, whatever you would call it) is nto very practical, if your hands have even a bit of moisture or sweat, the mousepad wont respond well. In fact it is so painful that It makes the computer very much less productive than my previous laptop.

The keyboard also seems very crammed. It doesnt respond well, even if I am typing at my normal speed and pressure, sometimes it will miss some characters. I still cant figure out why. Plus all the function keys can only be used if you use it in combination with Fn key.

Battery life: I only get about 2 hours on average. Although if you activate dell's battery saving features, it goes up about 25%.

In Conclusion: For the price, I find it to be a good value if you can tolerate the keyboard and mouse issues. I am trying to get it fixed by dell, but I dont know if they can really do anything. I personally wouldnt recommend it as keyboard and mouse are preety important. but it seems like I am the only one with these problems!

This laptop is good for word, business and any office related work. If your a movie watcher it is bad, glitches out in the middle of the movie, the mousepad glitches, the fast acess face recognition barely every works, when the computer starts up it glitches, 2nd month it was pretty bad but after that it is great, nice keyboard, one very horrible thing is battery life, as soon as you get it, make sure you charge the battery then drain it all the way and repeat for the first week or crucial for battery life. Finally pretty good lightweight and definetly smaller than it looks. Wide screen and lot of finger space when typing. Lastly only one huge problem, very bad at multi tasking.

This machine has a solid, all metal construction, with the only plastic being the keys and the bezel surrounding the screen. It is quite fast with a 2nd gen core i CPU and an AMD 6630 GPU. Keyboard is one of the best I've ever used, and easy match for any thinkpad, and backlit to boot. The 1600x900 matte screen is bright and very clear, but lacks color depth and contrast for any kind of high quality, color accurate display.

Other reviews have referred to it as flimsy but honestly, this is a pretty solidly built machine. Pressure on the back of the lid produces no distortions in the display, the base is very very stiff, especially for such a thin machine. Overall this machine reminds me of the T4x series thinkpad I used to own, but with a much brighter screen.

The speakers are terrible, even for a small 13" machine.

Linux compatibility has some issues that will hopefully get ironed out. Nothing that makes using it unusable, but a few things like the trackpad not having any suitable drivers, and really poor battery life (under linux) that make it a questionable choice if Linux on the go is your primary reason for using this machine.

I have used my laptop for a few days now and put it through some different trials. I tried videos, no problems, the only thing I wish could of been a little better was the sound of the speakers, but that's just the style of the laptop, it's hard to concentrate on both light and slim and at the same time have insanely large speakers. Next I inserted a few CD's including a movie which played perfectly and very clear, again the speakers are loud enough, just a little high pitched. You can always plug in a set of aux speakers if you wish. I installed a couple simple action games to make sure they would load and play and again no problem. I miss the old Sony power switch on the end of hinge, now it's like most other laptops positioned directly above the number keys. One more adjustment I had to make was getting used to a dedicated dvd eject button above the number keys again. You can't just push in on the dvd play door any more. Not a big deal and once I get use to it I'll be fine. I really like the 1600 resolution option on this particular model, if your wondering about text size, my philosophy is that you can always turn up the zoom of the page to 125% and most web pages still fit on the screen. The keyboard is nicely backlit and the keys have enough space between them so you don't hit two at once. I only wish with the new hinge setup that it didn't have that plat in the rear of the laptop, it's centered and runs better than half way across and sticks out a bout an 1/8". Not a big deal, but again, I liked the old style Sony hinge better personally. The new hinge cover is finished nicely though, looks like brushed metal. All of the input/output connections, except for the dvd player are on the right side of the laptop, I prefer this because it's easier for me to remember what side it's one. There are 3 indicator lights in the front left and look nice. There is a cap key light above the numbers. The laptop feels well made to me and I have no regrets.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO SA3 Series VPCSA3AFX/BI 13.3-Inch Laptop (Jet Black)

I looked at all similar units in the 800 to 1200 price range, and chose this one for the keyboard ease, backlight, and robust construction. It is substantially made, mostly of aluminum/magnesium alloy, and the matte display is outstanding. Other units had the gloss and the glare is quite distracting. You pay a bit more for the Sony name, but it is worth it. It has the usual bloatware, but not overly intrusive, and one can disable these pesky bits easily. It is remarkably light, yet not flimsy in the slightest. I'm using it in my surgical office for electronic records, CT scan image review and other fairly processor intense tasks and the i5 handles all quite rapidly. I did up the RAM to 8mb, and that was $14 well spent! Got mine from 42nd street photo in NYC, and all is well. I would recommend it highly.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO SA3 Series VPCSA3AFX/BI 13.3-Inch Laptop (Jet Black)

Purchased this laptop because its basically the only machine out there with the combination of features I wanted, and it costs less than a grand to boot.

-Backlit keyboard very difficult to find in this size, much more effective than the little thinklight on Thinkpads

-Hi resolution 1600x900 screen just try find this feature outside of Dell enterprise workstation models

-USB 3.0 onboard

-Fingerprint reader

-Dedicated Radeon graphics seems like nearly every PC is using the crappy Intel HD integraded chips in their 13.3" and smaller models

-Aluminum unibody I'm really confused by the reviews describing this laptop as "flimsy" or claims that its not actually metal

Have been using the machine for about a week now and its simply impressing me at every turn. After uninstalling the bulk of the Sony bloatware, Ive got it setup quite cleanly rather than doing a full clean windows install (as mentioned by another reviewer who was having difficulty).

Runs every game I've thrown at it in native resolution (1600x900) so far, including BF3 and MW3, which is jawdropping. Having a portable gaming system thats this svelte is going to make traveling a heck of a lot more enjoyable. It quite simply blows the doors off my last "thin and light" acer timeline.

All in all, a good purchase and a happy camper. Thanks Amazon for a great price versus the Sony website!

This is my second LAPTOP from SONY VAIO, First one was F series but I had to buy new one because F series if is big and i need one smaller

I have bought this laptop SA Silver(color) for 1 month, first I was surprised of its shape. It is very thin and light. Silver color is amazing. All my friends love it when they saw at the first time.

It is very fast,

this graphic card is strong, so I can play on it strong games like (MW3, The RUN .etc.)

I have photo shop program, but it doesn't affect on the performance of Laptop

I believe that SONY is best company for Everything

This is my second Toshiba laptop and I bought this one due to the price, plain and simple. My old one had only 250G hard drive and little RAM...and was missing keys.....and really didn't look professional when I'd take it on prospects for my graphic design spots. So I found this one and really liked that it was much better on memory, a little lighter than my last one and since it was Toshiba, I felt I knew what I was getting. To be truthful, I was looking for a workhorse, not top of the line and was a bit short in the cash department.

It was easy to set up, I've gotten used to Windows 8, to a point, but still thinking about uploading Windows 7...this keyboard also has a numerical keypad, unlike my last laptop, which took a bit of getting used to when typing..much smaller keyboard and different feel which, again, I'm getting used to.

Now, the bad? Why even bother putting in speakers that are that bad!?!?!!? I listen to music much of the time or radio and these speakers are very tinny, no tone...not for music..so, another expense. I also have a strange experience with an on again/off again touchpad which means I use a wireless mouse. No, I haven't contacted Toshiba about this--figure its prolly a wonky driver or something.

All in all, I'd still buy it if I was in the same predicament. I was looking for memory and quickness and I got that, but if I'd had an extra $100 laying around, I'd be a bit happier.

I did a lot of research to get the best buy for my buck. This laptop has delivered and so did the seller. I'm very happy the fan is attached to the side of the laptop instead of the bottom. That is what causes over heating which is what I experienced with my Compaq laptop. So glad to be rid of that dinosaur!! The only negative thing with this laptop is the speakers/audio. It is very tinny sounding but I'm ordering up a speaker set. I don't listen to music from my laptop but I do watch movies so I hope the speakers will rectify the problem. I will update my comments when I find out!

Don't get me wrong on this, but it is a great laptop! The customer reviews @ Walmart and Consumer Reports convinced me this was the best value. Best thing so far was at start up, it knew we were using Linksys, asked to confirm, and instant internet access. Wow! Second thing worth noting is it's every bit as fast as my new HP 500 GB tower.

Some of the reviews said the unit gets pretty warm so I ordered a three fan cooler and a wireless mouse. Amazon came through again as even with these add ons, I still paid less for everything then what Walmart wanted just for the laptop.

I purchased two of these laptops in Dec. 2009. The first one had hard drive failure in 2 months. The second lost the hard drive at the 6 month point. Now 6 months later (and at the end of my warranty) I'm sending laptop 2 in for another hard drive. This model is junk. I wish I had purchased something else. 3 hard drive failures in less than 12 months = FAIL.

I'd give 3.5 stars. Few weeks after we got this, the hard drive decided to die. Big bummer...one of those you get what you pay for moments. Thankfully, Toshiba took care of us. We sent the laptop to them and they sent it back repaired, no cost to us either direction. 6 months later, we haven't had any further problems. It was inexpensive and hopefully will continue to hold up well.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5974 Laptop 15.4" Notebook 2.1GH CPU 3GB

We bought our 2 for our girls in December of 2009; same as another reviewer. One of the hard drives just failed on me. Got a black screen saying "Disc Read Error" that I can't recover from. I'm gonna see if I can find one on eBay.

I've also had issues with the other computer slowing way down to a crawl and had to run a bunch of tests and programs to correct that. Hardly anything is installed on either of these computers. Found a bad sector on that hard drive, too, but it hasn't failed yet. Probably because my daughter uses her Iphone for a computer way more than the actual laptop. Hardly anyhing is installed on either computer.

The computers run hot as hell, too. Made some setting adjustments to help that but it still nearly burns my hand if I put it right up to the side there after a while. I think the heat is also responsible for the USB drive on the left not working anymore. We got it on a Christmas Walmart blowout special for $225. It's okay, I guess, for what you pay for it and for minimal use, but Toshiba had issues with those satellite computers running hot. I read that they have fixed the issue in later models but I'm not sure I would trust another Toshiba. Oh, and the thing only stays charged for about 45 minutes without being plugged in. That's crap.

I have had mine for almost 6 years without a single issue.

Its a real nice beginner laptop, for the money on amazon you really can't beat it. Specailly for an older windows.

UPADTE!!

this laptop develped all kinds of issues after 2 months of use. its screen is detacting, its CD/dvd/blueray doesn't work any longer, it will NOT hold a charge for over an hr.,the FAN runs constantly even though the laptop isn't hot!!! there are several other issues too. PLEASE do not buy toshiba until these issues are resolved!! I had to buy a cheaper model (again toshiba thinking it was JUST that laptop) and this one is doning the same things (except the detacting screen). I have to leave this brand new laptop plugged in because it won't hold a charge for 15 minutes! its also a satellite . So, PLEASE don't buy a toshiba.. look somewhere else!

So, I bought this laptop two months ago. I ended up getting a pretty good deal on it (better than this specific item. On the whole, I am very satisfied with my purchase (aside from a few minor things: read further).

Pros:

The processor is fast, the harddrive is big enough, and there is plenty of ram. And, Windows 7 is a nice upgrade from Vista. It stays cool in your lap, even with moderate to high use (although can heat up if you're using video and don't have a standalone graphics card, which I don't). The display is pretty, and the 14" is plenty for me to do most things. The laptop on the whole looks very nice (particularly the keyboard) and is very portable and pretty light.

Cons:

I spent the first day trying out the TONS of software that came preloaded onto the computer. By try out, I mean uninstall/disable.

Sony loaded up this computer w/ a lot of bloaty bloat software that really just didn't need to be there. I ended up just going through the msconfig services menu and disabling everything to do w/ Sony: mostly because some of them were just using up ~5% of my CPU for nothing (particularly the sony media center).

Secondly, the speakers aren't amazing. In fact, they're pretty disappointing. Definitely rock the headphones for this one, or external speakers.

Summary:

Good computer (i3 kills it), decent price, good performance besides the bloatware and speaker issues.

So I've had this computer for a week. Lets start by saying I looked at computers for 2 weeks before deciding on this. I spent hours each day trying to soak up as much info as a I could from various places and this seemed like the perfect computer. It's not perfect but it's pretty damn close!

First thing I will say is the size and weight do not do this computer justice. I heard people say it was crazy light but this is unreal. This thing honestly feels like carrying a folder with paper it. It's almost a little concerning. Your almost like man this thing is so light I'm afraid to drop it. Obviously dropping any computer is bad but wow this thing feels like nothing. It doesn't feel cheap light though, just makes you a little scared because this thing is so light. It's very well built.

Screen is amazing. The full HD does scale things to be small but after a week of full HD and I'd never go back. You become spoiled to full HD. Also the matte screen and high brightness NIT make this thing usable in the sun which for someone who likes the outdoors is must. I passed up a touchscreen because they have glossy screens which cause lots of glare but not this guy. I think touch computers are a bit of a marketing gimmick btw. My gf has one and it's cool, but that's exactly it. They are cool and I think it's actually faster and easier to use a touchpad but anyways.

Keyboard is a bit shallow. Here's the thing with the keyboard. It got great reviews but I'm not crazy about it. It's not bad its just a bit shallow but I honestly don't think it's a huge deal and I'm sure I'd get use to it. The computer is so light it makes the laptop kinda bounce around a little while typing when it's on your lap. When it's on a table or hard surface it doesn't do that and I really like it. It's also very roomy which is throwing me off. The last laptop I had, the keys were touching whereas these have spaces in between so I'm having more typing errors than usual but I think after a while I will love it so don't let it discourage you The way it's backlit is topnotch. Like someone pointed out on a youtube review, it's lit so only the letters on the keys are lit which is actually a really good thing. No extra light where it's not need and perfect light where it is need.

Windows 8. I was so turned off by what I heard by windows 8 I almost didn't buy a new computer. I'm glad I did. Now that I've used it I can say people are ridiculous. Yeah it's different but if you have 1/2/ a brain and have ever used a smartphone you'd probably love it. Some things are annoying but you can use it desktop mode if you want. As far as the start button you can just hover your cursor in the corner and a menu pops up with all of the options you need. So def. don't let windows 8 shy you away from buying this or any new computer for that matter.

Battery is unimpressive. I would of waited for the ativ 9 PLUS which has the 4th gen Haswell processors but I didn't want a reflective touch screen (wanted matte screen to use outside) and it was 300$ more. I could barely afford this so I will just have to charge it more often. Not a huge deal for me. Others maybe. If you need a long battery you might want to look elsewhere but I can always charge mine at school or home if need.

Speakers are unimpressive. I was aware of this before buying. It's not bad but I wouldn't be able to hear this in the shower or while doing dishes. It's loud enough to use while on your lap but while doing chores around the apt. or whatever you'll def. need speakers. As a note if this is a problem for you, you could always order wireless Bluetooth speakers for cheap.

Touchpad works GREAT. One thing that was a dealbreaker for me was touchpad. I almost bought an Asus but heard that while typing it would hit the cursor. Sorry that doesn't fly with me. That would of driven me crazy. I have huge fat heavy hands and I haven't touched the touchpad accidentally once whereas with my girlfriends Lenovo yoga I do it all the time.

This computer is obviously fast. Unless your a gamer you will not be disappointed. The start up time on this is insanely quick. The size, 13.3, is perfect. Ummm what else? It does run a tad warm. It's an ice cube though compared to my Toshiba satellite which felt like a fire on my lap.

Like I said I spent A LOT of time researching computers. It was borderline obsessive. Just when I had one picked out something would ruin it. After having it for a week, I can say I'm glad I got this computer. It's super fast, light, amazing picture, great touchpad, great backlit keyboard that's a tad shallow, and I can use it outside. winner. I would of given this 5 stars if it had better battery and louder speakers but don't let that stop you. Also I would say get this over the PLUS. Touch screens are overrated and are impossible to use outside. The plus does although have wayyyy better battery but they are 300$ more. The plus's also have insane resolution but if the video your watching isn't at that format, which hardly anything is, than it's useless. In a perfect world I have both but I can say I'm happy with mine.

I bought this for my fiancee. I have a Series 9 (new edition) and love it. Therefore decided to buy this newly upgraded ATIV 9.

I love everything about this laptop; very thin, very lightweight, stunning screen(resolution, colors etc.), lightning fast (takes 1-2 seconds to resume or 5-6 seconds to turn it on).

It might be a little expensive, but I believe that this is the best ultrabook for the price.

This computer is everything I could have wanted and more. The battery life is great, computer is fast and best of all the screen is absolutely beautiful! I didn't think I would like Windows 8, but I ended up really enjoying it and would recommend everyone to give it a chance and you will warm up to it.

Cons: To be hoenst I can't say anything bad about this computer. It looks gorgeous, is fast and is extremely portable.

Would recommend to everyone! 5*****

Honest reviews on Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP900X3F-K01US 13.3-Inch Full HD Premium

I haven't bought a laptop in a long time and wanted one under 3 pounds at a reasonable price. I considered a Toshiba Protégé, Asus Zenbook, Acer S5 and a Thinkpad Carbon X1 besides this Samsung model. I ended up choosing the Samsung because of its matte screen and good price. It weighs 2 pounds 7.5 ounces (1120 grams) and the A/C power adapter weights 9.2 ounces (264 grams). Not under 3 pounds but close.

After my initial use I only see one design flaw. The USB 3.0 port is on the left side right next to the power plug. If the laptop is on A/C power, you cannot plug in a normal USB flash drive in the USB 3.0 port at the same time ;( You will need a slim flash drive (no wider than standard USB cables) to have both plugged in at the same time. Hopefully Samsung will make both USB ports 3.0 in the future.

I was unsure about using Windows 8. Reading some reviews of what was coming with 8.1 I decided to take a stab at it and the hardware with this machine looked impressive.

The machine is beautiful, light and thin. We travel a lot so these are huge pluses. The screen is beautiful and the keyboard works well. The trackpad also performs well.

Wifi has real issues the adapter turns off frequently or just disconnects. Googling will give a number of ideas on how to fix this none have completely worked for me.

Unfortunately the software issues and lack of support from Samsung lead to a rather sad situation. It's not all their fault WIndows 8 is a mess. That's on microsoft. But when I tried to upgrade to 8.1 it completely failed leaving the machine in an unbootable state. The boot is so fast (nice feature when things work properly) that no keys would interrupt it. (I tried them all). It would start, fail, reboot, fail, start, fail, reboot, fail endlessly.

I did live chat with Samsung support. That was a complete waste of time and I had to go through the whole song and dance to learn that they couldn't help me and I needed to go to a service center. The service center hung up on me the first time I got through and then didn't pick up again.

I spent a lot of time on-line reading about the problems other Samsung owners were having with 8.1 The preview for manufacturers came out in August. It is the middle of October and Samsung has no drivers that work apparently. I had to finally open the case, pull the hard drive, and then start the machine with the hard drive out. That got it to give me a menu that ultimately led to my being able to restore to factory new settings wiping out all data on the machine. I had to reinstall all my software, uninstall the crud again, fix settings , etc. But I was just glad to get it to be able to start again. I was nervous for a while that the machine was completely ruined.

I have no idea what to do with regards to 8.1 There is no official statement from Samsung that I can find letting consumers know that the update will in all likelihood render the computer inoperable. The support page for this machine has no information and no downloads for new drivers. Chat support and the service center were both useless. I was left completely on my own.

There is a samsung software updater. There is a microsoft store that updates software. And buried in system setting windows update is hidden. 3 different pieces of software that all update different parts of the system. I have no idea how I'll know when it is safe to try the 8.1 update again or which of those pieces will provide the missing updates necessary for it to work.

If you've owned a Samsung Android phone and waited and waited, wondering when you'll get updated to a newer version of software that is out for everyone else you get to enjoy that same experience with these laptops. When I spend over a thousand dollars on a machine, I intend to use it for a very long time. Unfortunately it looks like Samsung believes their part in this ends as soon as they have my money from the initial purchase.

I'd like to think the 8.1 update could fix the wireless problems and address some of the many windows 8 shortcomings. But I have no idea how long I'll have to wait to find out. And for that reason, something that should never be an issue on a high end machine like this, I simply can't recommend it to others.

This is a great laptop for everything I need. Its fast and gets everything done I need to quickly and easily. I was a little disappointed it wasnt touch screen but thats not a big deal. The only problem I think I have with it is the absence of some shortcut keys for music controls. Also, the speakers are located on the bottom of the laptop so when I tilt up the laptop, I get a lot more sound. It would have been nice if there were more speakers on the top.

Just a heads up, be careful if you buy the warranty from SquareTrade, under as Frequently Bought Together.. they automatically stick you with the $600-700 package, but once you pay for this laptop after tax (just the laptop) it comes to $713.51 I was lucky enough to cancel mine quickly when I realized that the insurance wouldn't cover this laptop if anything were irreparable and they had to issue me a new one, as the lady told me over the phone, in order for that to happen you need to have the complete cost of the laptop covered in your warranty price. So I canceled it before it charged to my card, and went with the $700-800 coverage. Just thought I'd give a heads up to everyone. I bought this laptop for my daughter, I will be having her write a review on it once it gets here and she has a chance to try it out for awhile.

I rated this 5 stars for the warranty, because they were extremely helpful and got it transferred over to my daughters name in less than 10 minutes, and it took less than half an hour for it to receive to my email and everything verified.

I bought this laptop to replace an ageing (though relatively new) and chronically overheating HP laptop. Needless to say, I will never buy an HP again!

This laptop was a great investment and does everything I need, and quickly.

Most importantly, I have had no overheating problemsthis laptop stays ice cold! Even when doing intensive video encoding, this laptop stays cool. With my HP, you could not keep it on your lap without getting third degree burns!

I made a few modifications to this PC to improve its speed... I replaced the hard drive with a solid-state drive and I put a second hard drive in the optical bay. It now runs at lightning speed, only taking 3 seconds to boot!

For its price, you cant go wrong with this!
