This notebook could be improved in a number of ways, but since there's nothing else quite like it, I give it a full 5-stars.
Asus was supposed to release a similar notebook, as were a couple other manufacturers, but they turned out to be vaporware.
I searched high and low for a lightweight/ultraportable with a decent resolution (greater than 1366x768, this one is 1600x900) and a proper dedicated graphics card (2gb GT 730M).
The GT 730M is more than just a rebadged GT 640M as some sites have called it, it's has a higher stock clock speed (725 vs 625)putting it closer to the GT 650M and some reports have referred to the core as a GK207 vs GK107, w/ 24 ROPS vs. 16. I haven't yet figured out how to verify this, nor have I been able to get the latest drivers directly from Nvidia to load. On the subject of drivers, Gigabyte offers Windows 7 versions of all the software, drivers, and even a Windows 7 bios so you don't have to use Windows 8 if you don't want to.
The notebook really is light weight and runs quite cool. The stock msata SSD is the tried and true Crucial M4 which doesn't have the top benchmark numbers, but in real world use, it's a rocket. The notebook also has room for a second normal 7 or 9.5mm hard drive which is completely unheard of in a 'true' ultrabook. I believe the Gigabyte U2442D doesn't get to wear an "Ultrabook" sticker because it comes with an i5 instead of an i7, however the i5 is much faster than any of the low voltage dual core i7's and many of the previous regular voltage dual core i7's. i7 used to mean 4-cores with hyper-threading flagship performance, but now it just means at least $200 more on the sticker price.
A few things to consider if you're looking to purchase one of these notebooks; the aluminum lid has a gold-ish tint to it and the rest of it is just grey plastic. It doesn't really look premium and I slapped on a skin for the lid and a few stickers on the palm rest to keep it from getting scratched up too quickly. The screen is a traditional matte which is great for glare, but not so great for keeping clean or getting the sharpest colors. The notebook comes with Windows 8, which really sucks for productivity (but most computers come with Windows 8). The Nvidia Kepler architecture is great for gaming, but even with 384 Cuda cores, it sucks at openCL so GPU acceleration of programs like Matlab, Solidworks, Photoshop, Ansys, Comsol, etc aren't going to really benefit from the dedicated card like they would with an ATI/AMD dedicated card of the same level.
At the end of the day, it's a very capable, very light weight notebook for playing and getting work done. When the box arrives you will not be disapointed, the packaging is sharp and Gigabyte throws in extras like a very nice leather sleeve and a keyboard cover/screen cloth.
At the time of purchase, over two months ago, this ultrabook did occupy a unique place with features others did not have and a low price. It's poor screen quality is its one obvious fail.
However, within one week, it inexplicably failed to turn on or show any sign of life when plugged in. Gigabyte issued a RA# and it was sent back via slow UPS on their account. Two weeks later, they reported no problem and send it back.
However, the same problem occurred after 3 more days, rendering the unit useless. It was sent back again and Gigabyte tecch said they had now figured out the problem and I would have to get a whole new unit, losing my HD setup and info.
A new unit was sent to me, 6 weeks after purchase with time spent on using it amounting to less than a week.
Turned it on and there was a big dead green pixel in the middle of the screen. Haven't seen that in a new laptop for many years. With no way of fixing the totally dead pixel, I had to return it yet again.
This time I asked for a refund, which had to come form GB because they had sent a new unit and the seller could not refund for that. Getting a refund from Gigabyte is not an easy feat -seems to have to go through Taiwan management .
Nine weeks after purchase, I am left with no answer to emails about when or how the refund will be issued. Chuck, the lone man in LA handling such customer service, seems to be an honest enough guy, but Gigabyte management and policies -and obviously Quality Control -are a clear fail.

Had high hopes for this model, but alas -quality control is apparently a severe issue with Gigabyte's laptop line.At the time of purchase, over two months ago, this ultrabook did occupy a unique place with features others did not have and a low price. Best Asus UL50AT-X1 Core 2 Duo Processor, 500GB HDD, 15.6" Notebook Deals
This review is solely based on the keyboard and mouse buttons. I didn't have the computer long enough to tell you about the rest of it. I didn't like the rickety feel of the keyboard (not very stable) and I didn't like that the mouse buttons were connected/difficult to push. I recommend trying a computer in the store before buying it, because you can't experience the "feel" of one unless you get your own hands on it.This is not a recommendable product. The global support is very deficient, my laptop has problems with the Wi-Fi and I still waiting for the technical support answer since two weeks ago. If you can do it, choose other brand or model.

Buy HP Pavilion g6-1d38dx Core i3-2350M Dual-Core 2.3GHz 4GB 320GB
Love my laptop. Have not had any problems with it. It came with Windows 7 loaded, but I am considering upgrading to Windows 8. Not in a hurry though. I take my laptop on my bike with me and it has about 4,000 miles on it so far with no problems. I would definitely recommend one to a friend.
You should also be aware that this is an HP computer, so the battery life won't be stellar.
I hope this helps

The price is great but you get Garbage. Within 1 week of buying I see that the keys on the keyboard stops working. You will hit a J and it thinks you are trying to do F2 or screen swap. The only way to get out of this is to log off and log back in. The hot keys at the top of the keyboard are swapped. So F5 does not do refresh. I have never been able to successfully connect wirelessly with my printer. Now after about 2 years, entire folders disappear. What do I mean by that? Well you can go to Windows Explorer (file manager) and you can go to your My documents folders and you can see your "Kids" folder (as an example) but if you write a word document and then go to save it, the "kids" folder within your My documents folder cannot be seen. So what I have to do is save it to my desktop and then move it manually to the kids folder. This also means that for the most part if I want to send an email with an attachment I need to save to the file to my desktop to ensure I will be able to find the file to attach to the email for sending. I bought this laptop brand new and before this I had a Compaq Presario CQ60 that went bad a few short years after buying brand new. I am really starting to think I should avoid all HP laptops all together.Best Deals for HP Pavilion g6-1d38dx Core i3-2350M Dual-Core 2.3GHz 4GB 320GB

I have owned this laptop for a year now, and with proper care, it runs just as fast as the day I bought it, with the same battery still in it. It is a nice laptop with good features. The only thing I don't like about it is that the speakers suck. You can change them in the SRS sound settings, however they still aren't great. No big deal, I just use speakers. However, I would just buy the new model. They put the speakers above the keyboard (were I believe they should have been in the first place) in the new model whereas they are at the ends of the computer in this model. If you want to update to windows 8 you can, but I actually prefer Windows 7 because windows 8 isn't compatible with a lot of programs because it is relatively new.You should also be aware that this is an HP computer, so the battery life won't be stellar.
I hope this helps

I dual screen this laptop and have it on 24/7. The fan does get a little loud but other than that it performs amazingly and is a great laptop. Love it!

The only downside is the battery life is short. Get a laptop cooler if you plan on gaming. The laptop gets warm if your gaming while charging. I use it for gaming. Fast, clear graphics...excellent little computer. Even has a 10 key which I like, being it is a small computer i was surprised at how easy the keyboard/10 key was to use. Built in web cam. DVD/CD. USB ports on the right side. I would recommend this to a friend.Best Deals for Samsung NP305V5A-A05US 15.6-Inch Laptop

This laptop is Hot, Hot, Hot. Barely any underside vents, no removeable access panels on bottom to access hd etc, there is one tiny panel tho to add memory. cheap, flimsy plastic throughout. The day I received this computer the monitor wouldn't turn on. I called Samsung and explained the situation. Instead of replacing as they should have, the required me to go through their repair process. The problem persisted. Every couple months the montior quits working and I have to send it in for repair. This is a HUGE inconvenience. On this last repair, they identified water damage which I admitted to that affected the arrow keys. I didn't care about getting that fixed. Explained that I was responsible for the arrow keys not working and was fine with that but I needed the monitor repaired (again). However, they now say my warranty is deemed void. Six months after purchasing this computer it is completely unuseable and they are unwilling to fix it. I've been very disappointed by customer service as well as the computer itself. I'll never buy another Samsung.Sunday, August 10, 2014
Discount HP 2000--2B89WM 15.6" Core i3 500GB HDD Notebook
I bought this laptop for personal use. Some of the best features include light weight, latest OS, and best value for money. It is easy to carry around and retains battery for more than 7 hrs after charging it fully. Money best invested.
Disappointing buy.

Excellent computer for the price. I first purchased a DEll for almost twice the price and it did not work at all. After returning it I desided to just buy a cheap computer. Boy was I wrong. This Hp is anything but cheap. I've had it in use now for 6 months and have had no problems at all. Only thing I would recommend is to get rid of the Norton security and use the Windows defender security that is already down loaded on this computer and its free!! I did have issues with Norton and windows 8, but since I switched to windows defender there have been none.Best Deals for HP 2000--2B89WM 15.6" Core i3 500GB HDD Notebook
thanks I received my product in Venezuela, although I have not used yet because I have not configured the Spanish I think everything is fine, the keyboard model might be a little dated but that is overshadowed by comparing it with the aesthetic of the other parts team as well as its configuration. I was very skeptic of purchasing a refurbished item. But my boyfriend convinced me that it can be just as good as a new item. The computer works for the most part but the battery life is little over an hour, the optical drive doesn't work properly and it came with a scratch. Also, the manual is not very detailed.Disappointing buy.

Best HP Pavilion g6-2237cl 15.6" HD LED Laptop, AMD A6-4400M, 6GB RAM Deals
It's not a Mac, but I could not afford two Mac's so I got this for my daughter because most of homework is received on the internet. She loves it, it was about the only one that had windows 8 and 1TB HDD. She loves the Beats Audio and the price was amazing for the holiday season. No complants here. It's really fast, but, for me, it's annoying that every time I start it I have to activate Num Lock key; otherwise it wouldn't generate any number! Besides, I had to implement certain tricks to get somehow used to Windows 8.

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858 Core 2 Duo T5750 2.0GHz 4GB 320GB Reviews
Even thought this is my first laptop and I'm known in the house to "kill" anything that is eletronic. I find this computer exteremly reliable.
It did crash on me but that was my fault. Went on the wrong sites had to many virus and malware and it blinked out. I sent the laptop back to Toshiba and they fixed it within 2 weeks.
But I like the speakers they supply a decent sound, the mouse pad will get hot in long duration, due to the design and the finish you will be able to see your fingerprints (but thats something stupid to complain about), very fast on the internet no matter what (DSL, Cabel), a lot of storage space, and the software is very user friendly and I've never had a problem with Vista. It works like a breeze.

Discount HP Pavilion dv7-6178us Laptop Computer With 17.3" LED-Backlit
This laptop is very fast has 8 hypertreads cores, stylish looking, tough built, has 2 usb 3.0 and 2 usb 2.0,battery is above average compare to toshiba, nice silver aluminum finish not a fingerprint magnet, crystal clear webcam, runs cool, picks up strong wifi signal, has two hard drives compartment so you can install two hard drive up to 2 terrabite of space, clear screen brilliant colors, has switchable graphics cards,my only complaint is the removable hard drive plastic cover is made cheaply that if you removed it ,its impossible to put it back with out damaging the pigs that holds it in place so it will be lose or wont even stay in its a worthless design flow, also the power cord adopter is huge twice the size of any standard size laptop adopter, other than this two issues this unit is very powerful performer....
Only thing I'm not crazy about is that the screen isn't non-glare like my other HP laptop. Doesn't matter all that much...but I do have to move it around to beat the light. (It wasn't a deal breaker, either...so I went with it.) It was super easy to setup. The sound is very good. For the price I paid, I am thrilled. I don't think many more frills on it would really matter all that much. We don't rent Blu Ray movies (so the DVD/CD player is fine as-is). It has the connector needed for TV connection and it has WiFi. I don't see a card reader slot...but wouldn't know what to do with one anything. :) IF you can pick this up at $700 to $800, I believe you will be delighted with this baby. (You may see it listed as dv7-6b78us, but is same one (apparently).

I've had mine (got a great deal on it from Office Depot, plus there is a mfg. rebate) a few weeks. I like the backward compatible USB3 ports (it has USB2 ports also -all I know is there are 4 USB ports). I like that the electrical connection is on the right side (my last HP laptop had it on the left side). It has a fingerprint reader but not sure that is a deal breaker...now that I've tried it, no; I could get by without that.Only thing I'm not crazy about is that the screen isn't non-glare like my other HP laptop. Review of Lenovo V570 i7-2670QM Quad Core 1066 CEU 4Gb 750GB 15.6 1366x768
On paper, this should be a five star laptop par excellence. Unfortunately, it is not.
Pros:
Powerful processor
8 GB memory (even though it says 4; it actually came with 8)
750GB hard drive
Solid construction
eSATAp/USB 2.0 port
HDMI port
4 USB ports
Nice touchpad
Built in system image backup/restore software (limited, but useful nonetheless)
Cons:
THE WORST keyboard layout of any laptop I've ever used!! For some unknown reason, the left shift key is HALF NORMAL SIZE. And RIGHT NEXT TO IT is the forward slash key. EVERY TIME I went to hit the left shift key I ended up hitting the forward slash key. It's insane. Really. I absolutely HATE this keyboard. So much so, that I replaced it with a keyboard specifically made for the V570 and sold here on Amazon. (Replace with LotFancy New Black keyboard for IBM LENOVO Z570 V570 B570 B570A B570G B575 V570C Y570 Series 25200308 25-200308 MP-10A33US-686A MP-0A T4TQ-US MP-10A3 25013385 25-013385 MP-10A33US-6861 Laptop / Notebook US Layout (Note: Two kinds keyboard for Y570...)) A.S.A.P.)
VERY POOR TRACK RECORD of motherboard failure (4 months or less down the road the laptop won't power on because the motherboard has died)
VERY POOR HARD DRIVE PARTITIONING (i.e. Lenovo hogs FOUR PARTITIONS with their proprietary stuff, making it impossible to create other partitions for data, etc, unless you really know what you're doing. Fortunately, one of the 4 partitions is an extended partition, not a primary partition, and, with the proper partitioning software (you can't use Windows to do it) you can shrink the big "C" drive, and move that space into the UNNAMED/UNLETTERED extended partition that houses the proprietary Lenovo "D" Drive (But DON'T touch the D drive itself, it will mess up some of the proprietary Lenovo programs; just add the unallocated space created by shrinking the "C" drive to the extended partition that houses the "D" drive.) Then once you've done that, you can create as many logical drives in the extended partition as you want. It took me over a year to figure that little trick out (I have another V570 that I purchased directly from Lenovo, and never did figure it out in time. I basically wiped out everything that came on the laptop, loaded Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, then had to add back all the Lenovo drivers to make everything work. It was a major hassle, but I was able to partition the one 750GB HDD exactly the way I wanted to.) And the Lenovo forums were NOT helpful, even though it is a relatively simple task once you know what to do. Other laptops don't hog so many partitions with proprietary stuff to begin with, so it's much simpler to create a data only partition and have a more manageable "C" drive partition.
NO USB 3.0 ports
A horrible "ONE YEAR WARRANTY" policy that shaves off MONTHS of that policy unless you buy directly from Lenovo. For instance, I bought this a month ago, in March, but the warranty expires in SEPTEMBER, NOT one year from the date I purchased it, as per Lenovo and their arrangement with their resellers. I think that stinks, and I've told them so.
You MUST use LENOVO batteries with this laptop. And THEY DON'T HAVE ANY FOR SALE NOW. And neither does anybody else. They are not really supporting this laptop very well. I was told by one of the sales reps to call the warranty people and order the batteries from them. After some reluctance, the warranty rep finally agreed to sell me two batteries -at $20 more than the sales site used to charge when the actually HAD the batteries to sell, but at least I have two more batteries than I had before.
Also, the first V570 I purchased from Amazon had 5 very visible dead pixels. I returned that and got another one -the last one they had here for sale on Amazon. That one had a dead Ethernet port. (I could connect via the wireless card, but not the wired Ethernet card.) I had to PAY $20 to ship the one month old laptop with the dead Ethernet port back to Lenovo, then wait 12 days to get it back. They had to replace the entire motherboard, but at least it's working fine. For now.
So, as I stated in the title, there are definitely pros and cons to the V570. I would DEFINITELY suggest purchasing an extended warranty via Square Trade. I did. And I'm glad. And as noted above, unless you are a total masochist, or you type with 2 fingers, replace this HEINOUS keyboard A.S.A.P. It takes around 10 minutes and is worth its weight in gold. (NOTE: Save the original keyboard because if you ever do have to send it to Lenovo for warranty work, changing the keyboard, according to what I read on their forum, will invalidate the warranty. I have no idea why, but apparently it does. So don't ship them the laptop with the after market keyboard; put the original one back in. Then when you get your fixed laptop back, put the after market keyboard back in. You'll thank me. I guarantee it.)
However, I don't think the laptop is new. There is no visible damage; however, on the bottom some of the screws and screw holes have signs that they have been opened. (Chipped paint on screws, tooling mark around one of the holes.)
The Biggest problem is the keyboard. I live in the US and received a laptop with a Canadian Keyboard. No where in the description does it mention this. While I'm sure that I can adapt over time it is a huge inconvenience and very misleading.
Pros:
Powerful processor
8 GB memory (even though it says 4; it actually came with 8)
750GB hard drive
Solid construction
eSATAp/USB 2.0 port

4 USB ports

I bought this laptop for work and for the price point it was perfect.
Acer LX.PY902.035 7741z-4643 Intel Pentium Dual-core 2.0ghz 3gb Reviews
The design and huge screen of this Acer laptop is fantastic. However, there was a major flaw in the process by which Acer installed software on this laptop model that causes it to randomly freeze--at least that is the cause that I read online at some point in researching this laptop's glitches. Sometimes a couple of weeks will go by with no mishap, other times the laptop will freeze 3 times in one day. I have wasted countless hours online looking for a solution (working with the battery removed, flashing the BIOS with an update) and nothing has worked. It's an attractive machine but if Acer can't even get software installation right to avoid its products having such a fatal flaw, then I'm afraid this is the first and only Acer product I will buy. The mousepad is also infuriatingly hard to control, worse than any laptop mousepad I've ever used. Sometimes the mouse will get stuck on the right side of the screen for a couple of minutes and no movement whatsoever will free it until it just fixes itself after a minute or two. Avoid. This product was not new. It had some issues out of the box, which has been resolved, one of the keys has already came off and looks as if it has been glued on before. After the tech issues were resolved the computer its self is great.

Buy Gateway NV51B35u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black)
I got this laptop as a gift from my Mom. She got it for around the same price you see here on amazon. I'll break this review down into a few sections.
Performance:
This computer was pretty fast when you first get it. After a while, like any other computer, it slows down a bit.
Graphics:
This laptop will definitely run old games such as Star Wars BattleFront II, GTA San Andreas, and a few other not-so-graphic-intensive titles. It was advertised as a "gaming" laptop, but don't let them fool you. It has a poor graphics card that has trouble running a lot of things.
The Outside and Keyboard:
The outside of the computer is pretty cool in my opinion. It has a wavy texture that prevents almost all smudges and all fingerprints. This wavy texture continues around the mouse pad and keyboard. There are 3 USB ports and there is 1 HDMI cable spot. There is also an input for another monitor and of course, an ethernet port. The keyboard is odd to me. The keys are aranged so that there are gaps in between them so that EVERYTHING can get in between. This means you're going to have to pry off the keys a lot to get crap out from under them.
Audio:
This computer came with only 1, off center, mono speaker. The speaker isn't very loud and, as I said, is off center (to the left.) This doesn't bother me too much but it has potential to be annoying. Don't buy this computer if you're planning to blast music. (You can connect speakers and they'll sound fine/loud)
Resolution:
The resolution is my only major complaint about this laptop. It's set up with the dreadful 1366x768 resolution. If you don't know what resolution is: Resolution determines how much you can fit on your screen at a time. If you're a multi-tasker, you want a higher resolution. 1366x768 is just about the lowest resolution it can go and still function. It works, but you may sacrifice some graphics with some games and videos.
Windows Experience Index:
The Windows Experience Index is just a benchmarking system that tells you your computer's overall performance. The scale goes from 1.0 to a 7.9. Here are the results from my (unmodified) laptop:
Processor (what's rated: Calculations per second) 3.9
RAM (what's rated: Memory operations per second) 5.9 (You really don't need much RAM, especially if it's not going to be utilized by the low-end CPU (processor))
Graphics (what's rated: Desktop Performance) 4.5
Gaming Graphics (what's rated: 3D business and gaming graphics performance) 4.5
Primary Hard Disk (what's rated: Disk data transfer rate) 5.8
Summary:
I've had this computer for a year or two now. The "gaming" graphics are pretty horrific, so don't try running anything intense. The Resolution is pretty crappy, but you won't notice it if you're not thinking about it; everything fits on the screen nicely. This is a mid-range, average laptop. This is a good computer for a good price. I'm happy with it.
Battery life is great, no complaints.
The screen is nice, great pictures/colors/detail.
The volume is WAY TO LOW. I've not looked for hacks to fix this and hope it's not a hardware issue, but I've purchased a couple of these laptops and all suffer from this issue. Yes, volume up in control panel and app, all the way. I've considered installing Linux on it to rule out a hardware issue, but I'm really not thinking it's worth it. I'm just going to leave computer speakers at work and home.
Sound is great and loud with headphones.
The keyboard... perhaps my biggest complaint. there is a numeric pad on the right side but it is not separated from the standard part of the keyboard. Because of this it's a very difficult keyboard to get used to. VERY hard to find "home," cursor control keys way too small and awkwardly placed. The hard to find keys are even harder to find in the dark as they are butted up against the num pad.
Much of this would not be a problem if there was some space in between alphs keyboard & the numeric pad. Also, if the keyboard were lit it would be so much easier to use. IMO ALL laptops should have lit keyboards.
Despite it's nice features, for me, the keyboard is so painful to use I am likely going to turn this one into a media controller or something and get another beater that fits me better.
All that being said, it works well considering the price. Someone who only uses 1 keyboard might find it more intuitive. Kids adapt well to keyboard changes and my kids love to use this laptop..
Good: As always nice screen... bright. Its inexpensive. Tech support was easy to work with. This processor is a good one. Includes high def graphics. Fine for WOW or some of your other games, nothing too intense. 4 GB of RAM is awesome for the price. Shipping was very fast, as I have prime. Took 1 day instead of 2.
Bad: Keyboard sucks. Absolutely awful, i've had many customers very upset about the keyboard. First one I opened of this was bad out of the box. Wouldn't charge the battery. Tried another battery, and it still didn't charge, tried another cord, still didn't work. Thus the motherboard was bad out of the box. Called Tech support and explained what I did, he simply said okay, lets get it in. Sent me a fedex label which was good. Bad is they said it'll be 7-10 days to get it back.
To note: Overall for the price I'd say its good. Computers are just not made like they used to, but at the same time they used to be 1200 dollars... then 800... 600... and now you can get a halfway decent one for under 400..

overall, this laptop runs well. It's fast enough, can handle some fairly intense applications (audio and video) not as quickly as a real workstation, but it does a good job for what it is. Not a gamers box..Battery life is great, no complaints.

Got this laptop for my parents who are 83 and 81 years old. They love it. It was easy to set up and works great with their new wireless setup. I added an external keyboard and mouse for them as the laptop keyboard is a little too small for them to see well, but otherwise, it has been a great computer for them and they really like it.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Gateway NV51B35u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black)

Reviews of Sony Vaio VPCEA36FM/W 14" Notebook (2.40 GHz Intel Core i3 - 370M
Had a small problem with a conflicting listing description but am happy with the product and the customer service I am getting in resolving this description conflict has been entirely positive. I recommend both the computer and the seller. The computer is listed in some places as an i5 processor and it is really an i3 processor.
P.S. the vaio gate is my favorite part about having a vaio compared to other laptops
Thanks and enjoy everyone ;)

This computer is excellent in every respect except that it has a ventilation problem. As a result the computer overheats and the monitor has problems (black bars, multi-colored bars blocking the screen and the images). I would recommend getting a computer with all of these features, maybe even from Sony, but make sure the computer has adequate ventilation. Speaking with an expert may be necessary.
