I bought this laptop to replace my old HP Mini 110, which was a good, reliable system that I eventually outgrew. Decided to go with another HP since I was so pleased with my last one.

All things considered, I'm happy with this computer. Out of the box it was easy to set up and transfer my files onto. The 500 gig hard drive and 4 gigs of RAM mean that I don't have to worry about overworking my system. I'm able to plug in my spare monitor and watch movies and tv shows while doing other tasks and it doesn't slow things down at all! The display is gorgeous and the battery life is fantastic!

Now, it's not without it's flaws. Considering its size I don't see why a ten-key pad wasn't added. There's no Bluetooth, which my Mini had and I had assumed this one would. A HDMI port would have also been nice. But, I suppose these are things I should have looked into before buying the computer, so I can't really hold that against anyone.

I paid for expedited shipping but didn't get product for 6 days. Was supposed to have been factory restored to original settings. It had password protected items in Mexican language that took me three days to translate and get operable. It is very slow. Just a bad experience all around. I have an HP Probook and am completely satified with it so was surprised that this unit operates so poorly.

I have used my wonderful G4 17 inch screen for several years; upgraded the RAM to 2GB and run Photoshop, Lightroom, etc, with no problems. This is a cheap way to get a great computer with a huge, beautiful screen.

Right out of the gate, this has been an impressive laptop. No, it's not an ultrabook, but it's reasonably light, at 4.4 lbs. It also has features, like a DVD reader/burner, full size HDMI port, etc., that are lacking on many budget notebooks these days.

Pros:

*Fast. Very fast. It's an i7 chipset, and it truly flies through most tasks.

*8 GB of RAM, straight out of the box. What a joy, not having to deal with upgrading.

*One of the best keyboards of this style that I've ever used. Nice feedback, responsive, and easy to type on (I so wish I had the same keyboard on my much more expensive U31)

*While not the fastest, the hard drive is huge. 1TB is almost unprecedented for a laptop.

*Great fit and finish. Everything feels solid, the screen hinges really grab (sadly lacking in many notebooks), no wobble from the screen when it's up. This is not a delicate flower of a notebook -it's solid and substantial.

*Good port selection, including a pair of USB 3 ports. No VGA, but full-sized HDMI. Wired Ethernet.

*Backlit Keyboard w/adjustable brightness.

*Surprisingly good sound from front-firing speakers.

*ASUS Instant-On works flawlessly. Boots from sleep in seconds. (Boot from shutdown takes much longer, since the drive is not SSD, but you won't use it often. It can sleep for a month on a full charge.)

*It's quiet. I mean, really quiet, even under a load. Processor is so powerful that the fan almost never needs to run, and when it does, it's a whisper. Huge kudos to ASUS on this. It has never gotten hot on me, even transcoding video. Oh, and the exhaust is on the side, thankfully.

Cons:

*Mousepad, while solid, is a bit too stiff as a clickpad, and a bit too sensitive when tapping. However, my guess is that the clickpad will loosen-up in time. It is, however, responsive and accurate.

*Screen is the standard 1366x768 LED backlit, which is fine, but it's calibrated horribly from the factory. You need patience to get it adjusted properly. Obviously not a retina display, but, as a plus, it's non-glare, and easy in any light.

*You WILL NEED to update the BIOS immediately, to version 410 or above. Mine came with 407, and suffered lockups until I did. Fortunately, in this day and age it isn't too hard to do, but if you're not tech oriented it might be a hassle.

*Standard bloatware, including the completely unnecessary McAfee anti-virus, and some other things. Not horrible, but you'll have a bunch to get rid of.

I know there are a lot of folks ranting about Windows 8, and this is my first machine with it installed. Took a bit to get the lay of the land, but honestly, within a day I had no problems with it. Actually, I see little difference between it and Win7, once you're in desktop mode (which is where you automatically wind up most of the time anyway). Sure, there are some quirks, and new ways to do things, but so it goes. Anyhow, I'm not rating Win 8, I'm rating the hardware.

Overall, I can highly recommend this laptop. No, it's not the sleekest or fanciest. No, it's not a touchscreen. It is, however, incredibly powerful and fast for the price, and the build quality is top notch.

A WOW Laptop!

This Asus U47A is one of the finest computers I've ever owned. It's only a day old as of this writing and have yet to find anything about it I don't like. The jury is still out about the Win 8 OS, but that has nothing to do with the laptop. More on that later.

I share a previous reviewer's comments (D.M. Seeley) about the pros. I only want to add a few things to what was already covered:

The Good:

*With the i7 chipset, this machine screams!

*The 8 GB or RAM will enable the user to open just about any program that exists or have several RAM intensive programs open simultaneously.

My Windows Experience Index is as follows: Overall5.9

Processor: 7.7

Memory: 7.8

Graphics: 6.5

Gaming graphics: 6.5

Primary hard disk: 5.9

Since the Index is based on the lowest number, the addition of an SSD will boost the overall score up to 6.5. The 1TB HHD supplied on this laptop spins at only 5400 rpm hence the low reading.

*The fit and finish on this laptop is simply awesome. It reminds me of a race car that looks fast just standing still!

The Not So Good:

As said by D.M. Seeley, the bios needs to be updated right out of the box. Mine came with v. 4.7 and the latest is v.4.10. It's not terribly difficult to do but advise using Google and Youtube to get comfortable with the procedure.

This has nothing to do with Asus, but Windows 8 isn't compatible with POP3 mail. There's a work around for this but not without having to jump through many hoops. So, at this point, my favorite email client won't work but I can simply log on to my ISP's website to retrieve and send mail. If you opt to use Windows Mail, Outlook,or any of the web-based email programs no problems.

I highly suggest you download an excellent program by Soluto (soluto.com) after you finish deleting the usual bloatware from this machine. Soluto can tell you which applications are necessary and which aren't. It also gives you some very helpful information about your machine, too. Also, startup can be speeded up if you delay the loading of some of the necessary programs. I much prefer using Soluto as opposed to "msconfig."

When researching the U47A on the internet, it was suggested to uninstall Asus Live Update before connecting to the internet for the first time. Uninstalling this will keep the laptop from downloading the "USB Charger Plus" program which sometimes disables all the USB ports. Since I don't charge things from my computer, I don't need this program to begin with.

Some people have mentioned having wireless issues due to the Wireless Console 3 which I also disabled.

The above mentioned issues were never really issues with me, so your mileage may vary. Deleting or disabling certain things will hopefully keep future issues at bay.

All that being said, I highly, highly recommend this machine! Asus makes quality stuff and it's very apparent with this laptop. No matter what machine you ultimately buy, there's always a bit of tweaking to do. There was much less to do with the U47A than any other computer I've ever had. Three thumbs up, ASUS!

Honest reviews on ASUS U47A-RHI7N15 Laptop Computer with 14" Screen / 3rd Gen Intel

I purchased this laptop last week and I am very pleased with it. It's portable, fast, and fully equipped with everything I needed. I wanted an optical drive, 14 inch screen, and much more. It also has a back-lit keyboard.

I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a laptop with Windows 8 but I actually adjusted today in no time. I decided to download Classic Shell so that I could easily see the famous "start menu." The other plus to downloading Classic Shell was that the "Tiles Start Up Screen" is totally bypassed in Windows 8 and goes directly to my desktop. Therefore, I really don't have to deal with the nuisance "Tile Screen" if I don't want to.

Overall, this is a good budget friendly laptop equipped with the average necessities of a home user.

Perfect screen and keyboard size.

It is fast, but lags. Has Windows 7 on board and all bloatware removed.

Cons:

Touchpad is not working properly. Cursor jumps around the screen.

This is hardware problem. Cannot be fixed with drivers update.

Asus should recall laptops with faulty touchpads.

To fix it, you will need to remove aluminum foil under the touchpad, but I was not able to disassemble it. It looks like I have to break mounting clips around the edges.

First of all, Amazon shipped me a ThinkCenter desktop! Needless to say I was quite annoyed. After dealing with their customer service, I promptly received a return label for it, and the laptop was shipped with 2-day shipping. This was a Thursday after noon, and I didn't receive the thing until Tuesday the next week. First time I've had an incorrect shipment from Amazon since I've been shopping with them for the last 6-7 years. Well on to the review. At $600 for a ThinkPad with Windows 7 Pro it's a damn good deal. I bought this for my wife for use at home. I removed some of the bloatware that came with it and installed MS Security Essentials. The power saver feature is great! I can supposedly get 4+ hrs out of the battery (based on the estimate on the battery indicator) although I've never used it for longer than an hour off the plug. I don't know if it's a Win7 feature, but if you mouse over minimized windows it shows a small pop-up of the window. I love that, since we tend to have a few windows open at a time. Boot up time is ok I've not timed it, but it feels like 60-90 seconds. I tend to Hibernate it most of the time. From hibernation, it starts up in less than 30 seconds. The build seems sturdy enough and compares ok with the last ThinkPad I used about 12 years ago. There is no latch to close the screen though. On the screen depending on how you hold the machine, the screen tends to swing backward on its weight. It is unable to support it self at certain angles. This is not a problem (yet). I hope it doesn't become more free though! The screen is glossy, but I don't have too much glare issues indoors. I haven't tried it outside, or in brightly lit areas. I received the unit with only a DVD burner drive. I need to see if that drive can be swapped for a blu-ray drive, as the unit has an HDMI output which is of no use unless I stream or download high def from the web is like never. The 14" screen is just barely ample. I did not want the SL510 withthe 15" screen as it would've been too heavy for the purpose. The screen is actually pretty short vertically which annoys me since you have to scroll alot more to see more of a page. I personally prefer the ~4:3 aspect ratio (1280x1024?)of the older laptops. But all laptops are coming "widescreen" now so complaining about that is a waste of time. As far as performance goes, I haven't installed any other applications on it (besides Firefox) as yet. However, I don't foresee any issues. It only comes with 2GB of RAM but that should be sufficient for the use intended, and can supposedly be expanded to 8GB if needed. We don't do pc gaming so I couldn't tell you about that. Wireless works fine around the house. All in all, so far I am very pleased.

Have been using Lenovo ThinkPads as simple and reasonably sturdy business laptops for field sales users. The SL410 continues to serve our needs. Had a system board failure under warranty in a previous unit and local warranty repair was done promptly with no fuss or cost to us.

Got mine from friend, he has upgraded it to 3gb of ram and i am sure that does make a bit of difference performance wise. Very sturdy work laptop i carry in a backpack without any protective cover almost everyday everywhere, harddrive has not failed yet even though the laptop suffers shaking from me running and general school bag handling... dropped it twice so far nothing broke. (the height of drop from the chair that it fell twice from due to me tripping on power cord is approx 2.5 ft. And oh yeah the power cord is also good even though i trip on it at least once a week :)) Software, i run W7 to my own disappointment but legacy soft wont run on anything but winfail... and i have installed ubuntu as well natty as a dual boot for my other work

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad SL410 2842F7U 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

I was big IBM laptops fan since X31. But SL410 is last drop. I can't stand it any more.

My sound card messed up in less than 6 moth. I had to restore whole laptop to its factory defaults twice in less than a year. To be exact 9 month.

Despite having good specs, performance is just more than disappointing.

Sorry my French, but I'll never buy Lenovo crap any more.

It does what it says it will. It is a small android laptop. For those who want to work on the go, like a keyboard and mouse it is perfect. The included productivity software will open and edit word, excel and powerpoint files to a degree and read images, video and .pdf documents just like the bigger laptops. Inexpensive enough to lose and limited in capacity so you won't have "all your eggs in one basket" if you misplace it. Wifi and ethernet for the internet, regular size SD cards for storage and the gps-nav software is accurate to a few meters. This is not for kids. No touch screen means I can accurately use my mouse and my Logitech Wireless mouse works great plug and play. For the elementary school agebuy them a 7" or 10" tablet for the same price to play games on.... they won't really need a "computer" till Jr. High and most could get along fine with this netbook if there's a computer at home to do the extensive editing and printing. This is a unit you need as a second computer and travelling companion.

The memory and included hard drive allowed the viewing of youtube with no problems. I checked my email and played with several of the android apps. This laptop is very light and easy to take with you. The laptop worked almost as good as my intel i7 processor in my desktop. The included mouse and power cord worked very well. For the price I was amazed by all the functions this item could complete.

Sony has gone downhill in implementation of an overall happy experience in their "lower priced laptops ($569.-$679.)". While I think this unit is overall a decent design, it has a major annoying aspect one can't ignore. The Track pad. Sensitivity is wayward, but the killer part for me is the cheap clacking noise it makes when clicking on it. It makes a cheap plastic clack every time you push it (and you must push it firmly). The PC works great, fast, good keypad, good heat dissipation, fast start up, etc. The speakers are lackluster and the case lid has some sharp edges. I bought mine at F**y's and am suspicious of their product source and them. I find it odd that when opening the box the item looked "almost" expertly repackaged. I suspect either they are selling overuns ,rejected quality items, or refurbished out of country items, and not letting on. Or maybe customs opens items more these days. The giveaway is the plastic covers that are supposed to be taped over(on new items) are not.I'll Buy Amazon next time.

I was looking for a small laptop with a backlit keyboard at a reasonable price. I often use my computer in dim light and this one solves the problem. The backlighting is not intrusive at all and can be turned off in normal lighting. This computer meets my needs. Sony does not load on tons of junk software. This computer is does not have a touch screen for Windows 8, which is a function I would not be interested in a laptop anyway. This computer works well with the Logitech T400 touch mouse, which is optimized for Windows 8. Actually, this mouse mirrors many of the touch functions of a touch screen.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14125CXW 14-Inch Laptop (White)

this is a really nice computer, you can't obtain a better computer for this price. the backlit keyboard is very useful when you are in low lit conditions. Intel HD graphics 4000 run almost everything you need. bluetooth works perfectly (after some upgrades). procesor is really fast, letting you to run a lot of apps and programs. Windows 8 is a little bit annoying at first sight but you'll get used to it and when you do you'll find out that is a very nice system, really fast to boot up and very fluid. battery lifetime is quite good 3.5 to 4 hours with a single charge. and finally a thing that really impressed me is that this laptop doesn't heat up like other ones. no matter what you do with it, this laptop stay fresh.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14125CXW 14-Inch Laptop (White)

My wife fell in love with this laptop. She loved the "pink" color. I read several of the reviews and had mixed feelings about this product. I even talked to the IT guys at work who told me Sony made a solid product. I had reservations based on some of the reviews but I bought this for my wife anyway. We received the laptop in 2 days via Prime, which is great by the way. The moment I opened the box I had concerns. The cloth bag the laptop was in had been obviously opened before so I figure this had to be a return. The fit and finish on this pink and white pastic case is terrible. The corners in the front do not match up well and leave gaps to snag on things. Performance was good, quite fast, but that's where it ends for the good stuff. The Bluetooth did not work, it would not connect with anything. The USB ports would accept some devices but not all. The keyboard area that is pink plastic, had some sort of residue on it that felt rough, almost like a paint overspray of some kind. We tried to get the wireless printer to connect but that would not connect either. We have 3 other laptops in the house that all connect flawlessly. I called Amazon and got an authorization to return the unit for a full refund. For the same money we went to Best Buy today and found for the same price $599.00 an Acer Ultrabook M5-581T-6405, 6gb of ram instead of 4, the same 500gb hard drive and it also has a 20gb SSD included. This think blows the Sony away on speed, picture quality, features and connectivity. Sorry Sony, I generally love all your products, I have several of them in my home, but this laptop is a dud!

The laptop is beautiful and it Works perfectly, but it seams cheap, I fear that if I am not very very gentle with it, the computer may break. The keyboard and the trackpad look easy to break. But the reason why it looks cheap is because it costs less than other laptops. So, I think I would recommend it to people looking for something cheap, but only if you know you can be careful with it. I think you get what you paid for.

I actually didn't buy this product from Amazon but I REALLY wish I had. I owned this laptop for 6 days of light use before it died. The laptop simply wouldn't turn on. I called Lenovo and they had me ship it to their warranty repair center and told me I should receive it in 7 business days. 4 weeks later I still don't have a laptop! Lenovo customer service is absolutely horrendous. Apparently my laptop had been put on hold due to lack of parts. I asked for a refund or a new laptop to be shipped ASAP since going without a laptop as a student is life-ending, however Lenovo refused. I actually had to file a complaint with my credit card company to have the charge disputed because Lenovo left me no other choice.

Update:

I finally received my laptop 4 weeks after initially shipping it to be repaired. I was appalled because I went to turn on my laptop and it still didn't work! They didn't even fix my laptop. The report said my mainboard was replaced and my laptop passed all tests. Obviously that was a lie since I was currently experiencing the exact same problem from 4 weeks ago. Customer Service said my only option was to send it back a second time for them to fix it. Needless to say I found that response unacceptable and demanded a refund. I'm now waiting 2-3 business days to hear if my refund request will be "accepted" or not.

I wish I read the rest of the reviews closely. Let me save you some time. Do not buy Lenovo. I've spent the past 10 years buying Lenovo laptops and something has drastically changed with product quality over the past 2-3 years.

The laptop shipped with a faulty WIFI card.

Lenovo makes it difficult to get support. Getting transferred back and forth between software and hardware departments is not how I want to spend my day. 3 hours deep on the phone, still no end in sight. I've learned my lesson. I can't stress it enough. Lenovo is the worst customer service. I'm shipping this garbage laptop back. Between the runaround on the phone, faulty product, and unhelpful support, Lenovo has lost a customer for life.

This machine broke down on me within 3 months of using it. For the period where it did work I had connectivity issues, poor battery life, and "special features" that only hindered the machines performance. So now its been in Lenovo's repair dock for 2 months with no estimate for when it will come back. Whats more, after they had the thing for a month they demanded 400 dollars to repair it. I can't even describe how infuriating this whole process has been. I regret my purchase with all my heart and soul. Don't buy this computer, and don't buy a lenovo product.

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad U400 09932JU 14-Inch Laptop (Graphite Grey)

Pros: Good looking, good finish, perfect size.

Cons: Very poor usabilitythe touchpad takes up half the room where your hands sit for typing, so you end up touching it very often, causing what you are typing to end up somewhere else. The two finger scrolling is also very pooreither does not move, or scrolls too fast. Keys have been made very small so hard to typeshift key is almost as small as regular alphabet keys. I would never have thought this would be an issue with a computer (seems like this is the simplest thing to get right), but it is truely frustrating. The keyboard and touchpad were designed with looks not functionality in mind.

I rarely write reviews and I try to be positive when I do, but I just had such a bad experience with Lenovo's Support Service that I am compelled to write a negative one. I had this laptop for 6 days (with only 3 days of actually playing and around 6 hours of use since I have been traveling). This is supposed to be a work machine for me, but I am glad I have not migrated anything on it yet!

First of, I'd like to say that it is a beautiful machine. I like the solid feel. It doesn't feel "plasticky" and cheap like some of the other marketed Ultrabooks out there. The laptop stays cool and quiet. The display is a bit muted in color in the beginning but a few tweaks on the display configuration made it better. The touchpad needs some getting used to. The only real issue that I have on the hardware is the lack of easy access for changing the battery.

Now for the software: WARNING! This laptop does not include any recovery disks!! Windows did its automatic updates on my third day of using this laptop. I tried a reboot after. The Lenovo Boot Optimizer started up...tells me there's an error but proceeded in trying to boot Windows. That failed. Windows started running its repair utility or whatever it needed to repair, but then says it can't repair (It said that it might have been caused by a software that I recently installed...I have not done anything on this except to install Microsoft Office Starter on the first day!!!) and I have to call customer tech support. Ok, so I called Lenovo Support. The first thing after briefly describing my problem, they told me that I the ONLY option that I have is for them to send me the recovery disks. I said great, send it to me please. But apparently I have to pay $59 for it!!! They said that it's a software issue and that it's not covered in their manufacturing warranty. I asked if there's a way for me to create my own recovery disks (by downloading the files from the website). Yes, he/she said...I can by burning it from the laptop! What irked me is the fact that after I described my problem, their "policy" is to "set my expectations" right away and tell me that they are a paid service. I wasn't asked any additional questions except "How can I help you today?".

I returned this laptop right away. Thank goodness for Amazon's excellent customer service policy! I gave two for stars for the hardware, but "product" for me extends to not just hardware but also software and customer service.

I made this video to hopefully add a little more life to the product.

Snow Leopard adds a lot more than I thought.

This is a great computer if you want to play with pics, surf the web, mess with your music collection.

This is not the Mac if you want serious processing power of lots of inputs to create a home network.

Look to a MacBook Pro or iMac for that.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had more inputs.

This is a pricy computer already, now I have to spend more to get adaptors.

I wish it was still available in black or you could opt for the non-glaze display.

I hope you enjoy the video, I had fun making it.

I had intended to purchase my mother a Macbook for some time now. I wobbled between the several models I considered. However, Apple's late October 2009 update to the white polycarbonate MacBook made the decision much easier.

Reasons for my Decision With this update to the 13-inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry-notebook impressive numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo is the same processor found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro (it has 160GB only).

Yes, considering the larger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook actually gives you a higher specification computer in some regards than the $200 more expensive MacBook Pro 13-inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody provides strength, and I must say this notebook is very solid. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a long-life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. In terms of performance, my mother reported to me simple usage of nearly six hours on a charge. Impressive. Blows away my older Mac notebook's battery.

Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro would offer, but my mother would likely not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces very carefully as it will show light scratches easily.

The bottom of the MacBook is a bit strange. It is a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I'm not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I would recommend wiping off whatever surface you are going to sit the computer on, to remove light dust, if you worry about the computer's appearance.

Overall, I was looking to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I didn't want to compromise performance, and I feel I didn't despite choosing this entry-level MacBook. Truly, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only slightly faster. These computers are getting faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.

The price to value of this MacBook is remarkable. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a larger hard drive. You can't argue with that. I didn't, and the MacBook has impressed.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I've been through 3 PC laptops in 4 years and only one of those didn't have fatal hardware failures or viruses. I used Mac's briefly in 99' and didn't understand them at all and have shunned them ever since. Finally after my last laptops motherboard started failing I decided it was time to take the leap to a Mac. The main reason I did this was because I've heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple products. I waited for the new models to come out first before I got one because I have a habit of always wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I'm used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough getting used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I've had it for almost a 2 1/2 weeks now and so far I couldn't be happier. There are very few flaws that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too "sharp" and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher would yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about getting the Macbook pro but could not justify spending more money and getting the same/lower specs (i.e. 160gb hard-drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery). I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I don't type in the dark so I can do without the backlight keyboard. At this rate I don't see myself going back to PC anytime soon!

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

This is my 4th Apple laptop (PB150, White iBook, MacBookPro Alumnium). All personally owned. I've also been a user of many PC laptops for work. Our last 2 Mac Laptops have been our sole home computer when we've owned them. Getting probably 6 hours of daily average use.

I have to say that this new unibody MacBook is by far, my favorite laptop I've ever owned and used.

We've been using it for a month now with the same rate of usage. Maybe more because of the holidays.

It has some slight imperfections.

1. I wish it still had composite TV out, but when I become the last person on earth to finally upgrade to HDTV, it will be ready (3rd party HDMI/video out cables are cheap).

2. The edge of where your arms go needs to be rounded because it slightly slices into your wrists. (I haven't filed it down yet, but will...)

3. And sure, target mode in firewire would be nice. But, it's rarely needed ($15 for a shell and a disassembly gets you to the harddrive in the disasterous event your system is so fried you can't get a network hookup going).

4. An SD slot would be nice too. But, everything I have a card in is USB anyway, and I already have card readers for when I don't (or my devices connect directly anyway).

5. It's more expensive than Windows laptops. But, at under $1000 ($850 if you're smart with rebates and deals) the MacBook makes buying a Mac almost equivalent to a nicer Windows laptop. Almost. Well, it's at least not embarrassing to admit anymore.

But, that's it with the negatives.

It's slim and sleek. The unibody means no flex when I hold the corner with one hand (RIP 2.5 year old G3 iBook with graphic chip recall). The plastic means no permanent deformation when I drop it from 4 feet (RIP 2.5 year old MacBookPro with a slow overheating death near the corner I dropped it on.) The battery life is impressive. (RIP every PC laptop I've ever used within 6 months.)

The white keys mean keyboard lighting is not such a big deal. The glossy screen is not really that glossy. The screen is bright and sparkly. The processor is speedy. (I run Windows on it just fine.)

The 250 gig HD is big enough (I'd need a few terrabytes to hold all my media anyway.) 250G is enough to simply expose the low end MacBook Pro for what it is Apple's cynical attempt to milk money out of folks.

The mousepad is just wonderful. Takes a day or two to get used to not having a "button", but it's simply wonderful after that. Two fingers for a right mouse click and for scrolling. I zoom in and out of dual browsing sessions with the pinch like I never expected to do. And it's CENTERED in front of the screen. I don't know what Windows design idiots decided to stop centering their mousepads and keyboards and to give them tiny recessed buttons, but I refuse to personally purchase a lopsided laptop where you have to flop 4 inches off one leg just to type and where your thumb is rigidly fixed to an ergonmically challened button. The keyboard is equally well designed and easy on the fingers for this touch typist.

And, 2 of my Apple pet peeves have been fixed: the latchless lid is perfectly designed, and, there's no feet to get rubbed off the bottom anymore.

Oh, and it's light. Not MacBook Air light. But, surprisingly light and thin. I carry a 17" Windows machine for work. Yet, the 13" screen rarely feels restrictive. And, its performance blows away the MacBook Air. Try running full screen video off of YouTube on a MacBook Air. It can't do it. This MacBook has the juice to display without stuttering.

Plus, importing the old data from my old MacBookPro was seamless. Import and done. Just a few apps that needed to be upgraded for 64 bit and Snow Leopard. No crap on the desktop to remove like a new Windows computer. No annoying security messages. No virus worries. Basically, ZERO "Windows" worries. (Yes, I've got XP running on VM ware fusion and Vista on Boot Camp for certain games. So, I know of what I speak... Yes, I'm a masochist.)

And finally, it's MacOSX. I'm the kind of guy that has people coming to me for tech help at work, asking for recommendations "for a new PC cause their old one has a virus". They need help reinstalling windows. They have driver issues. They have reps from foreign countries advising to "recover" their systems (which means wiping the entire Harddrive). They have trojans running wild. They are always confused and frustrated. The only ones who don't have problems are the ones who are too scared to do anything with their computers. Or, who are technically savvy enough to navigate the waters. Who like the complication.

The annoying things people have come to accept from Windows computing astound me. As a daily user of both OS's for decades, I always breathe a small sigh of relief when I get back to my Mac.

MacOSX is wonderful. It rarely frustrates. (Just scan down the list of Amazon's laptop best sellers, and see the average stars for Mac machines vs. Windows machines. Clearly, there is a difference in quality and ease of use that justifies the difference in cost.)

So, this review is much longer than I intended. But, after reading the initial reviews a month ago -of Mac zealots who hadn't purchased one who were whining about "no firewire" -of clean freaks who worried about microscopic scratches (barely a blemish on ours in this household with 3 cats, a dog, and 3 and 6 year old kids), I just had to put my 2 cents in. This is, in my opinion, the best laptop Apple has released.

Why? Because it is inexpensive (for a Mac) and does everything you need it to do.

Pros:

Unibody enclosure

Same battery as the MacBook Pro

Same graphics and processor (low end) of 13" MBP

Glass multi-touch trackpad

250GB Hard Drive (bigger than entry level MBP)

DDR3 RAM

LED Backlit Display

SuperDrive

New AC Adapter (I just like it better. Basically the same as a MB Air's)

Snow Leopard

Price

Cons:

No backlit keyboard

Bezel around the display isn't as "refined" and the edge to edge glass on the MBP

No Firewire. Isn't that big for current products as most things are going USB, but legacy items and high transfer rates of Firewire 800 or sustained throughput of 400 would have been nice.

Battery is non-removable. Again, could be a big deal for some.

"Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean

While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.

Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

The laptop is really nice. Everything as promised. Very quiet. A bit heavy, but I dont't carry it much and if I do it doesn't matter. Windows Vista is not really faster then XP :-( nor is it better.

All in all a good choice.

I had this system for a week now and I am pleased with it. I use it for ViOP and VPN using a wireless network for work and it works great. It is what it is, a mid to low range Laptop. The only thing that I can gripe about is that the pointing device is low grade. The left click button is aready loosing its spring. I knew the pointing device was not an everyday use device and I have heavy fingers. So I am going to a mouse.

I have enjoyed the laptop so far. Crisp display, ok graphics. Only gripe is it's a touch slow it needs to think about things for a little before they load up. Might be worth the mem upgrade to 2g for vista prem.

I was hesitant to order this laptop from the beginning. I did my research and found a lot of people complaining about issues with them. I thought, well, usually there's a lot more people who've had no issues, so maybe I'll get lucky. I've also had Thinkpads at work and home for the last 6+ years with no issues.

This laptop gets two stars because when it does work it works good and it is a nice light laptop. That's where it ends though...

I ordered this laptop directly from Lenovo. When I received this laptop it was defective from factory, the speakers did not work. I called Lenovo and was told the only thing they could do for me was to send it to be repaired...or charge me a restocking fee.

I argued that there was no way i wanted to turn my laptop into a 'refurbished' laptop a day after getting it and I requested a replacement with no restocking fee. After a lof of hassling and 2 days worth of calls i was eventually granted the RMA.

A second order was placed by them for a replacement laptop (exact same specs as the original). A couple of days after placing this order the price on the laptop went down considerably. I inquired about getting a price match trough the Price Protection Program (since I had not even received my order yet). I went trough at least 4 people in Customer support over the course of 2 days, but bottom line they refused to do this.

Why have a 'price protection plan' if you're not going to honor it????

I have spoken to countless people after this and sent several emails to customer support but they have been ignored

Needless to say I am extremely annoyed at this experience. To be honest I don't even expect the refund anymore, they can keep their 200 bucks, but it really bothers me that they would treat customers this way .

Stay away from these laptops...first off quality has dropped considerably (Don't take my word for it, do a search on Thinkpad forums or Lenovo support forums and you will see issues with speakers going bad and random reboots all over the pace with these models, people going trough 3-4 of these laptops and eventually giving up). Most of all however, their customer service stinks!

After going trough 4 Thinkpads at work and home, this will be my last one! If I could get my money back and return it, I would! Thanks Lenovo!

I really am suprised at how much I am liking this little sucker the more I use it, the back lit keyboard is really nice for myself. I got it in a pinch as i have been traveling a little more then usual. I bought it really expecting to return it, thinking the overall (especially screen) size was too small. I can say that due to overall quality, and design, i am really impressed, of course there is the bloatware one must get rid of, but one of the biggest things I like is the keyboard, I am not a great typest or even a typist, so this is such a nice suprise, i guess its just the ergonomics are so well thought out or the "solid" feel maybe...but its great! watching any kind of news video, or a true 1080HD so far is stellar on this little screen, the wireless antenna is simply rockingly sensitive, the best at picking up signals compared to others everytime I have checked another laptop and mine together.

I was seconds away from purchasing an Apple Macbook Air, due to they're design in their quality of materials and ergonomics philosophy, I was sold once I picked it up and "felt" how well made and "saw" the fit and finish and "knew" of the great customer satisfaction apple provides. The saleman and I went to one certain site i couldnt use my desktop for, the only site the portability was important (paramount really) I needed to use a laptop for, and the software to update the speed and redlight camera databases only worked with windows 7, the reason I am telling the whole story is....I am comparing it to the Macbook Air 13" which was aluminium, not plastic, and running Mac OS, so the sony doesnt have a better material for its casing, apple gets that one, and the OS is your call as I certainly have nothing against Windows 7 (its the bomb IMHO) so....the build quality is second to none (up to and including Apple) and due to its ability to do everything I need, and do it with this awesome keyboard and solid build, an example of this is; the hinges on screen(and screen) are built very well, and balanced perfectly (slightly loosened over time so-as to lift up EXACTLY like the macbooks. I dont forget the Apple's are the benchmark, but sony did thier homework on them, its styled very much like a macbook air, slightly larger, but it was $600 dollars less, and for the price the sony had a faster processer then the air with its core duo (at time of this writing, expected updates anytime), vs i5, 500gb HDD vs 640gb, and numerous other little thing you get (and dont get without buying an Apple) I personally feel like its my own Windows Macbook, only because its built so damn well....

If you are looking for a "smaller" sized, quality laptop on par, and in some way maybe even an edge' on others, and certainly better then your kids 15" "run of the mill" school laptop, this little baby is fast, huge HDD, great Xtra's HDD protection, and the ever getting cooler and more useful (to myself) intel wireless display then its gonna end up being a good choice, even for a guy thinking he was gonna take it back, now its my buddy, and because it is small, yet well built, I use it and take it more then all other computers, even when not traveling, my new 17" toshiba sits, while i grab the lil one thats not only fast, reliable and looks great, has a keyboard that make it easy for me to type, which is important to me..

I bought the this new at BestBuy for $1,050 and have regretted every minute of owning this machine.

The Software is extremely faulty (but this is Microsoft's fault, not Sony).

The hardware looked great first, and attracted me to buying it in the first place. Two months down the road the whole top of the computer is peeling off from normal use. The computer is only 4 months old and it looks like it is 4 years old now. The quality of the materials is extremely low and cheap. This computer probably costs Sony $100 bucks to make.

The interior hardware worked for two months and then the Wiimax adapter completely broke down. I called Sony support and they re-installed the drivers 3 times. By the third time the Sony rep said that it was a hardware issue and I had to send the computer to Sony for repair. You do not want to hear this with a brand new laptop.

I have regretted owning this and am disappointed that Sony created such a bad product and charged us over $1,000 for it. Had I known the hardware and the exterior of the laptop was going to peel off like a sticker then I would have gone ahead and bought a cheaper brand, perhaps an HP or a Lenovo.

Sony never called me back to help with the repair and they never sent me any additional information after contacting them 3-4 times.

I like Samsung notebooks, i have one RF511 with Core i7, it's fast, good finish, but the my Samsung Q330 have problems with lcd, some black risks appeared, it seems that some pixels died. I had no luck with this Samsung. The finish is also fragile.
