I bought this laptop a few days ago and so far it's great!

PROS:

01. Sleek Design

02. HP Quick Web very cool feature, where you don't need to load Windows 7 or your operating system in order to access everyday stuff like internet and email, music, dvds etc... It saves you battery.

03. Fast Runs multiple programs at once without or with little lag.

04. For the price, the Graphics are good and you can play games fine, but don't try to run anything major.

05. Finally a laptop that comes with great preloaded software!!! Hulu, Mediasmart just to name a few...

06. Nice size. Not too small and not too big.

07. Even though the exterior is glossy, this white version don't show up fingerprints as the case with other black HPs.

08. It's quite light to carry around. U can take out the DVD drive and replace with a "dummy drive" to make it up to 1/2 pound lighter.

09. Keyboard Very comfortable keyboard. No problems... It also has a numeric keypad embedded into the alpha keyboard. Doesn't replace your typical standalone keypad, but it comes in handy sometimes.

CONS:

01. Limited Battery Life I got about 2 hours with Windows 7 browsing the internet. I am considering purchasing a 12 cell battery replacement.

02. The touchpad is glossy and can take some getting used too. But I don't think that it should be a deal breaker since it can easily replaced with a wireless mouse.

I would recommend this computer for someone who wants a fast entertainment pc that has a great screen and is light enough to carry around.

I received this as my high school graduation present and it only lasted me for two years. As you may have guessed, the motherboard died on me. I spend over $100 in repair costs which lead to no use, it always ended up black screening on me. In the two years that it did work, the battery life was exceptionally poor and the laptop ran extremely HOT.

The reason for the motherboard issue is that the video card on the motherboard overheats. HP knew that the heat sink design was false, yet they still sold these laptops. What does that say about the integrity of HP? A lightly used laptop should never only last two years. Because of this, HP will never get my business again when it comes to any of their products. I will not support a company that holds such poor standards.

Every single customer that bought this piece of junk should fully be refunded for this joke of a laptop.

DO NOT buy this laptop. It will FAIL you.

I had this computer about 2 years. The CPU went. Checking online I see that is a common problem with these laptops. I was advised to just buy another laptop instead of sending in for repair. Look into another brand, I think HP is not what it use to be. I am moving on.

I bought an HP envy m6 at Best Buy about four months ago (June 2013) and it seemed a capable little machine, definitely good for the price.

Windows 8 was a big negative, but almost all new laptops come with it installed now, and there have been some improvements made with 8.1.

Last week the laptop stopped recognizing my battery and would not charge it. I wasted about six hours troubleshooting this issue myself, and then went to HP support since I was still under the manufacturers warranty. After an hour on the phone, they told me that the battery had died and sent me a new one that arrived in less than 48 hours. The new battery did not fix the problem. Unfortunately, the only other possibility at this point is that the part of the motherboard that detects the battery had become defective somehow. I suspected this was the problem when initially troubleshooting this issue, as my google searches revealed that this has been an issue for HP since Windows 7. Apparently their laptops heat up and burn out the diode that detects the battery.

Obviously this issue won't effect everyone, but it will likely effect some people. Here is my explanation for the three star rating:

It would have been five stars based on "bang for the buck" performance but...

1 star: No linux support for drivers. This is bad for developers and other technical types. You CAN install Linux / dual boot to Linux on this device, but some features will not work, especially dual monitor display.

-1 star: Motherboard burned out, and this had been a long term issue for HP that they've yet to resolve. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this laptop, especially if you're a developer. I'm currently creating a new image backup so that I can send my new laptop back to HP for who knows how long for a replacement.

In all... its okay, but you're rolling the dice if you purchase this product. I wouldn't recommend it.

I purchased this at "best buy" for $800 (Tax included). This is by far the best computer I've ever used. I notice some people complain about the audio, and how the speakers crackle (I haven't had this issue at all), I however don't use the speakers for sound on my laptop, but instead have it hooked up to a 2.1 system that I've had for my old PC, and it works great! Everything is smooth running and fast. would highly recommend buying this system. Only problem that I am have is finding a laptop carrying case that is big enough for it. But I do not really plan on traveling with it much anyway... hope my review is helpful for you...

I actually just bought this computer at a Best Buys for $ 779.99. I only have been exploring it for a couple of hours, but one of the first things I noticed was that the sound was below inferior. It has a touted feature called "SRS Premium", that among other features, provides a virtual, 3d sound effect; the volume being very limited. It includes many parameters, including a graphic EQ with presets, that seem to do little, if nothing to affect the sound. It includes Altec Lansing speakers, which at first glance, you'd think would indeed be superior. Quite the opposite! They crackle and break up constantly, and forget about even a hint of any real bass. I eventually ended up uninstalling this whole driver and reinstalling a basic driver, minus all the fancy features. This VASTLY improved both the volume and sound quality available.

On the plus side, a huge 17.3" screen, a dedicated number pad, a dual-core CPU; both rated at 2.5 GHz, along with 4GBs of installed RAM; expandable to 8GB, and wireless "N" are included. A 500 GB hard drive and accessible DVD drive that also supports BluRay! To complement this, 4 USB ports and an HDMI output are provided.

On the whole, I think I will end up being very happy with this PC, once I completely resolve the sound issues.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx 17.3" Notebook PC - AMD Turion II Ultra

I'm in love with my laptop, it's really awesome. It's true that the sound from the speakers is bad, but who cares, when we almost don't use the speakers in a regular basis to hear its audio (sometimes I use the speakers, but I put them very low and it works fine) and also when this notebook has all these amazing features. Only few laptops in the market has all these funtions with a great price. It only cost me tax in BJ's in a month where this laptop was on sale, so imagine how happy I should be.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx 17.3" Notebook PC - AMD Turion II Ultra

Well I am disappointed that after a year the motherboard gave out so fast. I didn't do a thorough research before purchasing this laptop to have known the effects it had. As to what the other reviewer JT mentioned the heating problem ( it is certainly a major problem). I enjoyed the time I had with the laptop up until that year. I have always taken care of any product that I purchased to last for as long as it can. I read on other forums later on that a lot of people had the same issue with the motherboard crashing just after a year. This is the first HP product I bought that gave me such an issue. I even bought a separate cooling fan thinking that would help, guess what it didn't change a thing. For spending (899+ tax) on it, I felt that I was cheated thinking I would have a laptop that would last longer than a year. I never really did anything major on there except for when I needed to use Microsoft word, watch a movie, browse the internet, small projects. I honestly did enjpy the laptop when it worked but now I am wondering whether to replace the motherboard or simply trash it, since my warranty was over like 4 months before this happened (funny right). I went back to best buy's Geek squad the guy told me it would cost 700-1400 to repair, he himself told me I'm better off buying a new one rather than to spend that kind of money for repairs. So overall if you're looking to purchase this be warned and even check over the internet you'll see a lot of complaints about the motherboard giving out after a year.

I'll start off by saying it does still work and has never failed to run. However HP update never worked from the beginning and Blu-ray player has never played a single bluray. It has a hard time with normal DVDs at times. I have to use windows media center. Probably the thing that aggravates me the most being i could have paid alot less for one without a bluray drive. Overheats easily just playing movies and not even gaming. Video card is extremely complicated to get to for cleaning and you risk damaging other components (big part of the heat problem). Duster can is not strong enough to clean it so I had to use an air compressor. Frequent hard drive errors that need repair. Also just found out it uses 2x2gb of ddr2 800mhz memory which is terrible even for when i purchased it and will only except specific hp modules successfully(ddr3 greater than 2000mhz is used today and are cheap). Slow outdated dual core processor. No ability to change anything to improve computers performance via bios. msconfig allows enabling all cores on startup tho and works for all computers. Not even worth the effort to put a SSD into it. I will add that i build my own computers now and know how to update anything from software to motherboard bios to firmware updates.

This computer is great. I had another Asus notebook which I loved...until I crushed it in an iguana accident. But this one is even better. It has all the specs mentioned in the title (though hard drive is more like 454 gigs not 500). The keyboard has a great light-up feature for use in the dark. That was a nice surprise. Palm rests are comfy and don't show finger prints, nor does the rest of the computer (It's not made of that shiny plastic so it won't show dust and prints as much). I don't know why the description says dark red though, it's black. Speakers are nice and clear and get loud enough for me at about 44 percent.

Internet speed is ok. It's not lightning fast but you won't wait more than six seconds for a page to load. It's always good to download Google Chrome. It's faster than Internet Explorer. Overall speed is good and boots pretty quickly.

The experience index is 3.3. I've only played The Sims 3 on it and it performs just fine. If you're a serious pc gamer or are into all that high maintenance software take your chances or look elsewhere.

It comes with Microsoft office 2010 so I recommend having an office 2010 product key handy (make sure you buy the disk version. The card is only good for one install).

As for bloat-ware there are a few things from amazon, Asus, and a game company. Check them out, and if you want them keep them. If you don't want it uninstall them. It's not rocket surgery.

It has a free trial for trend micro which I'm currently using for security, no problems so far but I've only had it for 10 hours. It will harass you about backing up your system at every start up. You can disable this but backing up is always a good idea. Just make sure you have at least 5 blank DVDs if you decide to do this.

I'm not sure about battery life, at least 3 hours.

Sorry I'm not a computer geek (no disrespect geeks are awesome) so I can't get any more specific than that.

As a young college student on a budget I would totally get this again.

Special thanks to Amazon and UPS. With prime I got it the next day using the free 2-day shipping.

I have had this computer for 18 months now (got it in December 2010). It has been a good computer up until now. Mine always has run hot (70+C) and has shut off from overheating probably once a month or so. This past week the chipset has started to die and will require me getting a new motherboard.

All in all, it is a decent computer that will last for a while, but is prone to overheating and will only last 18-24 months before needed to be replaced.

I have this laptop for over a year now. It does a decent work and the performance is good for the price range. Unfortunately, it broke down recently and won't turn on anymore. It's one month out of warranty and HP wants a hefty repair cost for a burned motherboard. Can't justify to throw more money at a bad product.

When I first bought the Toshiba Satellite in the summer of 2012, it was the most powerful computer at Best Buy. This computer was marketed at $850, but was only $750 at that time. Even at the discounted price, this is a wonderful computer. The Toshiba anti-theft and virus software has gotten me out of many problems that killed off my previous computers. It is very fast, and very reliable. The computer screen is beautiful, the number pad is a great addition, and the hardrive protection is wonderful. However, it isn't flawless. On more than one occasion, this computer has overheated due to it's metal body. The computer will automatically shut off protecting it, which is good, but the fact that it does it at all, isn't good. I've had this issue with my Xbox where it'd do that and turn off randomly during a game. It's worse with this because I use my computer for important things, like generating essays. Another problem is that the trackpad is very glitchy. I'd definitely reccomend a USB plugin mouse for this. I've only gotten the bluescreen once, and that was due to a software issue from one of the programs I've installed on here not being configured properly. So if you want a cheap and fast computer, I'd reccomend this over the MacBook Pro any day.

After careful research, on October 24, 2012, I bought online from Toshiba Direct a Toshiba Satellite L850 customized laptop for roughly $844 with taxes. I received it 2 weeks later but was out of town on work, so when the package was officially opened, it was after the 15 day "full refund" time period. What irony?! Well, I opened it, it worked fine the first time and the next morning, when turning on again, I got the "blue screen" treatment that so many other unhappy Toshiba buyers have experienced. I called Toshiba and got the scripted customer service replies for the next few days with no resolve. To be clear, I said I want to return it each time because I knew from former reviews that this was not going to just go away. No one helped at Toshiba's customer or tech service phone support and when I asked to speak with a supervisor, I was told they would have to call me back within 2 business days. Seriously? Well, that also didn't happen. So, I've now had the Toshiba laptop opened and out of the box for officially 3 weeks at this point, can't return it for a full refund, can't get sales or tech support to solve the problem, and can't get upper level supervisors to speak to me. Any wonder how I feel about spending $844 on this piece of garbage? It get's better too. Toshiba now wants to charge me shipping costs to send the laptop to their repair facility and perhaps within 2 more weeks, they'll tell me all of this is NOT under warranty and for a mere $200 more, they can fix it. Well, I decided I wasn't going to give them the option to fail me yet again. I took the laptop to a STORE (Best Buy) and spoke face to face with a PERSON (in their Geek Squad) and they ran a diagnostic in 1 day and yes, $200 later, fixed the blue screen problem and removed the spyware and adware that was also on the system too. One more thing; this is the first review I've ever written. Spending the five minutes of time to write this review will be worthwhile only if other online buyers don't also get fooled into wasting their time or money buying a Toshiba.

I bought this as a desktop-replacement for my wife for $460 Nov 2012. Not sure why the price is higher now. You can find a higher performing toshiba than this for $680.

PROS:

Moderate windows 7 performance

CONS:

I bought this computer about 2 years ago. It suited my needs and I'm quite a Dell fan. I have the full HD version with a 500GB 7200RMP disk.

The screen is bright (not perfectly even, but that is barely noticable) and crisp. The keyboard is a joy to type on (I don't like the chicklet keyboards you find on many notebooks today). I know, the keyboard catches dust and dirt, but if you're careful it is possible to remove a key to remove the dirt particle and refit it without breaking anything. When not under high load, the laptop is very quiet. When stressed, you hear the fan quite loud.

Today I'm considering to add some more memory (2x4GB instead of the 2x2GB I have now) and replacing the hard disk with an SSD.

I had to have the inverter of the screen repaired by DELL (luckily within the warranty period). One of the hinges has a crack in the plastic hull, the inner part is not broken though. Given the fact that I use the laptop every day for about 10hrs, dragging it from my desk to multiple meetings a day, I cannot but reconfirm my trust in the build quality of Dell.

This review is primarily about the location of the USB 3.0 Port.

From the manual: "If a port is black, it is USB 2.0 compatible, if

it is blue it is also USB 3.0 compatible". You will probably need this port for a wireless mouse.

After two days of ownership the computer has performed well for a relatively inexpensive laptop.

Windows 8 is not easy to navigate, to me. The 17.3" screen is bright, big, & very viewable.

Battery life is rated at 4.5 hours, which goes by very fast.

This computer was purchased to replace a newer machine the had failed and has been a fine replacement. After adding the battery that the seller said was missing I have been very pleased with the performance of it. Though it is a used machine, it was in nearly new condition and has worked well, even accepting a 2GB memory upgrade from the failed machine it replaced. with that addition it has been able to run Windows 7 without fault. This is how a purchase should be, honest and easy. If this seller has another machine offered, buy it, you can't go wrong.

I bought a T430s which was delivered early November. Order and delivery went smoothly. But before you buy this (or any other Lenovo product), there are a couple of things you will benefit from understanding.

1. the 64 bit Windows operating system (either Win 7 or Win 8) will not allow you to use older programs which worked fine with Windows XP. Lenovo offers something called "XP Mode" which is supposed to allow older programs to operate in a "virtual XP atmosphere". This is a bad joke. Neither Lenovo or Microsoft will support this and it does not work as easily as it is advertised to work. The Lenovo salesperson encouraged me to order this (actually, you can download for free if you don't order) with the idea that it was an easy to use system. NOT TRUE. I'm no computer dummie and I was unable to use ANY DOS or WIN XP program with it. Maybe it will work with a lot of effort, but who needs that? So, if you buy a Lenovo computer with WIN 7 or 8 (x64) OS, be prepared to buy new software for any program except MS Office.

2. I had all sorts of trouble with downloading critical updates for WIN 7. Microsoft said it was Lenovo's responsibility to help with this but Lenovo Tech Support refused. It was just by accident that I solved the problem by downloading one update at a time. Lenovo will not support the OS on the machines they sell.

3. I could not find any pre-installed program to use with the CD/DVD burner that was installed. Lenovo again refused to help with this even though they installed the software that would make this part of the computer work. Lenovo support for any software issue is non-existant, even for software they put on the machine. And it isn't like this would take them a lot of time or training to help with; it is just their bad and unreasonable policy. Beware-buy a Lenovo computer and you are on your own from the day it is delivered.

I played Battlefield 3 with all setting tuned to ULTRA and works smoothly without even upgrading to latest graphic drivers. Latest Games can run on ULTRA settings without any heat or noise. Sound quality is awesome. Display has great viewing angles. It can even run games smoothly under battery. 1TB 5400RPM HDD is perfectly alright and is able to boot in to Windows 8 in 9 seconds. The GTX 670MX has the latest Kepler architecture that can perform well on the latest gaming titles.

ASUS is really the choice of champions.

I've had mine for a little over a week now and I think it's great so far but, there are a few things that I thought some people should know about. I now wish I had the back lit keyboard however, the white on black keys are visible well enough from light from the screen. The Window's 8 takes some getting used to but seems easy enough to fumble you way through it. It didn't take long to understand it but every now and again I do something that I don't know how to get back to where I was and I have to start over again from the desktop. The computer gets hot and it all blows out the rear left vent. The display is beautiful. The shape of the computer being a bit wider than my old 17", makes it a bit more difficult to slide into a carrying case because I use a wireless mouse and the USB adapter protrudes out just far enough to get caught on the bag. The mouse pad is nice and very sensitive and sometimes causes me issues when trying to type. This is the reason I got the wireless mouse. My old computer had a button that allowed me to turn off the mouse pad. You have to find the "off button" within the software to adjust the mouse pad. The computer seems well built and looks nice. The keys seem to be nicely spaced and the keyboard "feels" good to use. It ran some YouTube videos a bit choppily, but that might have been cause by other things. My old computer running right next to the new one was running the video fine. One thing that really bugged me, and I'm sure it's not the computers fault, is there were tons of programs trying to tell me that I needed to download them. Trying to uninstall programs was a bit difficult at first but after learning how to do it from the smart phone style desktop it's easy. If I remember, I'll edit my review or add a new one.

Let me get this nagging thing out of the way: I bought this from Amazon last week, and IMMEDIATELY felt VERY disappointed. Before I placed the order, I spoke with Amazon chat to confirm that "CineCrystal" display on this product's page meant a glossy screen. The sales rep CONFIRMED it does, and it will, as it states on the page. Come 3 days later, after I look around and find NO OTHER gaming laptop has it, I pull the trigger. I open the Amazon box to see the Acer laptop... and *sigh* The side label said "ComfyView"-Their panels that have the anti-glare matte coating.

Yes, matte screens are ideal for outside use and all, as there is little to no glare, compared to glossy screens, but this is a portable Blu-ray and gaming laptop for hanging with friends in dimly lit rooms-I WANTED a glossy screen, as it still advertises on this page. I prefer glossy because they have, IMO, a sharper image, better contrast and colors that give off... more of a "pop", so to speak. I bought this almost exlcusively for the MMORPG on PC, "Tera: Rising", which has very vibrant colors, and I remember playing on 2 different 1080p (both TN panels, so don't bring up the "it's a different panel arguement) screens, one with and one without gloss, and the glossy one looked MUCH better! Regardless, if you're on the hunt for a glossy screen as I am, the matte screen does still look nice, and I truly mean it when I say Acer has THE BEST looking laptops. It's a brushed aluminum finish all around, and it looks... beautiful! Just be aware if you buy from Amazon, you MAY receive a product that differs from the description. I read a review on Newegg from a confirmed purchase they received a glossy screen, so I'm REALLY contemplating if I should go through hassle to return and buy from Newegg only for that reason.

Now onto the goods: The chicklet keyboard feels great when typing, and although not particularly ideal for gaming, gets the job done. Be aware that these keys are really sensitive, so pressing on them too hard may recess them in a stuck position-My friend just called asking why when he presses the 'E' key n Windows 8, the "My Computer" pops up. Well, he just needed to tap the Windows key a bit, and that fixed it; Windows key + E is a shortcut to My Computer.

The screen is nice. The viewing angles are like a typical TN: From side to side, you will notice a diminishing effect, but not a lot. Fro mtop to bottom, however, you will absolutely notice that weird loss of color, so position yourself right on this laptop when viewing movies for the best quality. Colors look well, resolution sharp and text is very nice to read.

Gaming. The GTX 760 is a good lower mid range mobile class card, where most people recommend it for 1600 x 900 (HD+) gaming, and not 1920 x 1080 (FHD) if you want to "max" out games, or play on high quality settings. Despite those reviews, and benchmarks that say it's within a margin of error in comparison to the GTX 750M (The Acer Aspire V3-772G 9829 being equipped with that, and about $200 less, but no BD drive and 4GB less of RAM), it games fine at 1080p. I HIGHLY recommend downloading the latest drivers from GeForce's website, and leave the check mark to download and install "GeForce Experience"-It's the difference between playable and non-playable, and will save you LOADS of time! Here are some rough estiamtes in some games at certain settings, as observed through FRAPS running as an FPS marker (I did not set a benchmark, these are what I recall seeing it stable out around; take this as an expectation of sorts):

Tera: Rising -1080p, MAXED OUT (All settings at 6/6, or their maximum equivalent): It ranged from 35-38 FPS questing, and dipping A LOT, going from 8-15 FPS in Corsair's Stronghold PvP Battleground. If you're familiar with this game, you know this is not uncommon, as even my desktop equipped with a 780 dips into the 20's, as this game has not gotten a lot of love for optimization.

League of Legends -1080p, EVERYTHING MAXED: Observed over 70 FPS, and maybe a low of 55 at times, but VERY smooth.

Far Cry 3-1080p, HIGH settings (3rd lowest; VERY HIGH and ULTRA are after, so this is 3/5, so to speak) with no filters or AA, and HDAO: About 25-29 FPS roaming around, and a little higher riding a jet ski. Still looks nice with the pixel density of 1080p on a 17.3" screen.

Guild Wars 2 -1080p, MAXED OUT, with NO Supersampling (Disabled): About 38-42 FPS questing.

Metro Last Light -1080p, NORMAL, Advanced PhysX OFF, SSAA OFF, Tessellation NORMAL, 16x AF: About 35-39 FPS. Playable. I manually adjusted settings for a bit, having it on high with no filters, and where it did hover at 40 or so FPS, there were plenty of areas with just the AI talking it would TANK to like 12-15 FPS for no reason. This is the game GeForce Experience definitely helped out, and why I'd recommend you install for your convenience when you update your graphics driver.

Crysis 3 -This one I have installed, but did not yet try out. I'm listing off what GeForce Experience recommends I set my settings to for the best experience: 1600 x 900 (HD+; lower resolution than the default 1080p), 1x AF, and ALL settings LOW. Yeah, this won't run Crysis maxed out, like at all.

The Blu-ray drive is nice; plays all my Blu-rays, even ones I backed up that my niece loves to throw around just fine-I used ArcSoft Total Media Theatre 6 I have a license for as opposed to the default Blu-ray media. If it ain't broke... This is a Blu-ray reader/ DVD burner. You can however create ISOs out of Blu-ray for mounting on a virtual drive, so that's a plus.

All in all, my few days with it doing light benchmarking and all has been nice. I would recommend either switching out the 5400 RPM drive with a 7200 RPM one (~$88 off of eBay for 1TB), or use an SSD for boot (there is a second hard drive bay that does not come occupied, for future expansion), as this laptop boots a little slower than I'm used to. I'll see if this matte screen can win me over, but other than that one big gripe, I feel the rest of the parts are great for gaming on the go, albeit at medium to high settings.

I used this computer for 3 days before sending it back. It has an amazing screen and a great keyboard. Biggest problem was installing drivers from acer's website completely bricked this thing. Maybe I got a bad one, but I sent it back because doing a complete system reboot twice in the first 3 days of owning a $1200 computer is a bit unnerving.
