So I decided I would do a review on here even though I didn't purchase this product from Amazon.

Overall, this is a strong machine with low price. 4 Gigs of RAM is a huge plus. CPU is not bad with 1.8 GHz Pentium 2117U (2 cores. Beside that, 500Gb storage is great for music and video in normally.

About the battery, the advertiser told 4 hours. I never used one program or just start the laptop to check it, the actual battery of my laptop is over 3 hours. I think, it depends on the way you use the laptop. About the windows 8, windows 8 was designed for touching, but this laptop is untouchable. Cheap Lenovo Helix 11.6" i5 4GB 180GB Notebooks

I purchased this exact i5 Helix pre-launch from an Ebay reseller so I've had about a month of use with it. If you don't already know from watching one of those brief Helix ads, it's a tablet convertible laptop with dual batteries. I'll skip all the specs and go to my experience.

First of all, I come from using a Surface RT, Razer Blade, and self-built PCs. I sold my Surface RT and Razer Blade to pursue my journey of finding my ultimate device to augment my work. Razer Blade was incredibly fast and powerful, but it was too big, gets too hot on the lap, and looks unprofessional. The Surface RT's kickstand is a pain to use on a lap. It keeps falling over and it's ARM processor doesn't allow for freedom of programming languages. I have to use Python and Visual Basic for financial modeling. The Helix fixes all these issues for me of course. Design-wise, I believe it to be the best implementation of a convertible so far. I'll list the negatives though.

The touchpad is frustrating. The usual Thinkpad buttons are gone and the whole pad is allowed to be touched to move the pointer. That's a problem because when I click, I tend to move my finger. I would ultimately start dragging things or clicking the wrong links. Lowering the sensitivity helps but it really shouldn't be that troublesome. Lowering sensitivity obviously makes it less responsive, such as touching the touchpad slightly to the side of your finger won't be registered if sensitivity is too low.

Two-finger scrolling is terribly unresponsive and unusable. I have since switched to one-finger scroll with the circular gesture. I find the one-finger scroll to respond enough of the time to work effectively. However, it is no match to a MacBook's touchpad's two-finger scroll response. I wish they got this right.

Fan is always on. Don't get me wrong, the fan is not noisy compared to something like the Razer, but it's strange that it has not turned off while I just type this review. I can't really figure out how to install TPfancontrol for the Helix. Some help would be appreciated.

The upper right corner of screen/tablet can get pretty hot. It's not too much trouble for me since I usually work on my lap and there is no heat from the keyboard.

The battery life is great but it's nothing like the Surface RT. The Surface RT claims 8 hour battery life. Lenovo claims 10 for the Helix. Well, if both were playing videos, I'm sure the Surface RT would last longer. The Helix drains quicker. The battery life is still phenomenal for a device this powerful, and I haven't needed to charge at work yet. However, I watch my battery life closer with the Helix than I did with the Helix. I drain the keyboard battery so quickly. I understand it is a trade-off though. The Helix has a much nicer display and I can definitely attach an external monitor or TV to the Helix. I would experience horrible, unusable lag if I did that with the Surface.

Next problem may be a Windows 8 issue. Because the Helix is 1080p and only 11.6", everything is pretty small. If I try to get Windows to enlarge icons, text, etc., fonts and pictures would look blurry. I haven't found a solution to this yet except keeping to the default smaller settings.

Next issue is the price. For about $1700, this is extremely expensive. I LOVE the design but I start to doubt whether it's really worth the price. I love a small tablet PC that I can work on in bed with a fantastic feeling keyboard. One alternative is the Thinkpad Tablet 2 which I tried in a store and it was pretty awesome. I actually prefer the design of the Tablet 2 over the Helix. It is so small and Lenovo designed a beautiful case for it. The problem with it is that I cannot adjust the screen angle, hdd space is limited, keyboard trackpoint is annoying, and the performance of the processor with multiple screens is dubious. However, as a simple programming and office device, I could see myself happy with the Tablet 2. For now, I still think the Thinkpad Helix is possibly the best business laptop, but I would love a slimmed down version that's even thinner and cheaper.

After two weeks of playing with it I returned it, mostly because of the battery failure. (Tried to update BIOS, of course loaded all updates, etc).

I wish I had time to write a comprehensive review but here is the bottom line. I sell over 1,000 PCs and Notebooks a year and have been doing it since 1987. This is the most impressive machine I've had the pleasure of working with in many, many ways.

It's solidly built. The screen is super bright and sharp. It's touch and it has a stylus for jotting notes and marking up documents and presentations. It boots super fast and it runs just as fast (mine is the i7 version but can't be much of a noticeable difference). It presents no compromises as a notebook or as a tablet.

If you fly a lot you will appreciate the battery life which got me to Europe with power to spare. Also by detaching the tablet, turning it 180 degrees around and re-attaching it to the keyboard base you get a tablet that will sit at a 30 degree angle on your trey table. Much easier to manage than a typical tablet sitting flat.

The only weakness I found is not the machine's fault Windows 8 remains a struggle for me. It's a great touch OS but going back and forth between "Metro" applications and the traditional desktop and non-Metro applications is a bit painful. That is probably more my lack of experience than anything but it's definitely an issue for me at this stage.

It's expensive but it's worth the money in my opinion. Not affordable for everyone but neither is a BMW. If you are looking for a flexible travel machine that doubles as a notebook and tablet, the Helix is what I would recommend.

I've been looking for a tablet/computer that I could use for work and for play (and that runs real Windows) for over a year now and the Helix has delivered on both fronts. The portability is amazing, pop the screen off and you have a tablet you can carry around the house or into meetings, snap it back on and its ready for work (or a little gaming). And through this, the battery keeps on going.

A couple things could be improved on though, it could have the next generation of Intel processors (Haswell) in it. This would drastically increase battery life. Also the graphics card is only on-board (Intel 4000), so don't expect to run anything at high rez, but I've been able to play both SWTOR and Civ V without any real issue. Also the RAM is supposedly soldered onto the board making it pretty much impossible to upgrade later. Though it sounds like the hard drive is removable.

If you can afford to wait, I would wait until these guys have Haswell chips in them (you'll get WAY better battery life). If not, buy this computer. I did a lot of research into all the hybrids on the market right now and this is by far the best.

Expensive yes, but its a great laptop. No Haswell is not a huge problem as the battery runs 9 hrs as is. Keyboard far better than another hybrid option. Its is a great laptop and a solid tablet. Everything else has a stronger bias, such as the Lenovo Yoga which is great laptop but a mediocre tablet. Or the Microsoft Surface devices, which are very nice tablets but really so-so as laptops. The Helix does both extremely well. Its somewhat overpriced, but if you really want the laptop/ultrabook in one (as many travelers do) and don't want do use two machines to do it (laptop plus tablet) this is the best option on the market today.

Update Major issues with trackpad. Hard to use and ultimately resulted in returning the device. The trackpad had a lot of travel when click and causes the pointer to hop around when clicking. Small issue ultimately brought down the utility of a very interesting hybrid.

DESIGN

Very sleek, very strong and very lightweight. Asus says, "Inspiring Innovation"? This point is questionable, since it so closely resembles a thin-profile laptop of another OS, but it is a good design nonetheless.

Some people complain that this particular model with a black finish `attracts fingerprints'. Really, it doesn't attract more fingerprints than anything else you touch, but does show them quite prominently. For me, this is very low on the list of complaints, especially since it does not affect `normal use' of the laptop. I may even prefer the black finish to the silver-gray, since it looks more professional.

I would prefer that Asus would make their "ASUS" logo at the bottom of the screen smaller, but this is also a minor point.

DISPLAY

Let's get this out of the way: You're buying this laptop because of its great 1080p screen, right? Make no mistake; Asus has serious build-quality issues with their Zenbook displays. It has been a known issue since the first UX31A models and before, and, unfortunately, they have not fixed it on the latest touch version.

Light bleed is rampant on all of these units, and I have yet to see a Zenbook without light bleed around the edges of the screen. If this is a potential issue for you, do not even consider buying this laptop. For me, I can tolerate (but do not like) this light bleed, so long as it does not interfere with normal use. But on this point--normal use--I have had additional issues. My 1st unit had so much light bleed in the bottom-left and right corners that it caused white backgrounds (word documents, websites, etc.) to appear yellow in those areas, several square inches into the screen on both sides. My 2nd unit had less of the corner yellowing, but a significant orb of uneven backlight in the center of the screen, extending several inches upward. My 3rd unit (and hopefully final) I would call the `least problematic' of the 3, though certainly not perfect by any means. There is some irregularity of the backlighting, and light bleed on the edges, of course, but nothing so jarring that it will prevent me from normal use.

IF you can find one of these laptops that has few enough issues with the display, you may then proceed to enjoy the clarity of the high resolution, 1920 by 1080 pixels. It may be of concern to some that the high resolution might interfere with comfortable use of the computer in Desktop mode. With Windows scaling set at 125%, however, and Google Chrome default zoom also set to 125%, I have not found this to be an issue at all.

The IPS display allows for very good viewing angles, which helps alleviate the age-old problem of constant readjustment of the screen. The brightness is also very good, compensating greatly for the glossiness of the display. A note about brightness: I noticed that the display would `flicker' when on battery power if a screen with a light background was switched to a screen with a dark background (as if dimming, when auto-brightness and adaptive brightness were turned off), and vice versa. It turns out that there is a setting in the Intel Graphics software called "Display Power Saving Technology". I unchecked both of the "Power Conservation Features" in the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel to alleviate this problem.

The hinges on the display are questionable. They allow for easy opening of the screen, which is good, but also tend to allow the display to fall backward once open. Any time I give the computer a good bump or pick it up quickly, the display opens to its full extent. Fortunately the good viewing angles of the IPS screen make this less of an issue.

KEYBOARD

The keyboard is above-average for an Ultrabook. It is not as good as a ThinkPad keyboard, but actually better than the Lenovo Yoga keyboard. The keyboard itself does not flex in the middle, very solid. Key travel is short, but it is pretty crisp. Coming from a ThinkPad myself, the biggest adjustment has been the short travel of the spacebar. Nonetheless, I have found my stride within a few days and now type almost as well on this one as I did on the ThinkPad.

Backlighting on the keyboard is a big plus. As many users have noted, once you have this feature, you will find it hard to go without it. Three levels of brightness allow for some variableness if you like.

The secondary functions of the Function keys (F1 thru F12) require use of the "fn" key on the keyboard. What adds insult to injury is that there are no dedicated volume button elsewhere. So adjusting the volume always requires 2 hands, a big pitfall if you like to keep one hand on an external mouse.

But! There is a remedy... until Asus is willing to fix this. Download and install a key-remapping software (such as KeyTweak), and remap f10 to Mute, f11 to Volume Down, and f12 to Volume Up. You won't have use of those f-keys anymore, but if you're like most users, you probably never used them anyhow. I further did a re-mapping of the Context Menu and Right Control keys to dedicated Home and End keys, respectively, since I use Home/End keys frequently and do not care for them being relegated to second-class functions of the arrows.

TOUCHPAD

The touchpad is average. It is not great, it is not terrible. I find pointing to be pretty accurate, but two-finger scrolling to be abhorrent. Note on this point though: There are currently 3 touchpad drivers available for the UX31A from Asus' website. The oldest of the 3, version 32, has much smoother two-finger scrolling than versions 35 or 36. The newer versions may have more accurate pointing, but worse two-finger scrolling, so pick which is most important to you. I am using version 32 for now, and it works okay. Adding a smooth scrolling extension to your web browser can somewhat improve the experience as well.

The surface of the touchpad is not the smoothest for gliding your finger across. I find it to be a bit 'sticky', even though the surface appears to be smooth. Maybe adding a slight texture to the touchpad would improve the situation.

SOLID STATE DRIVE

It says "128 GB", so how much space do you actually get for you files? Less than 70 GB. It's a shame, really, that over 45% of the supposed space is eaten up from the start. Manufacturers need to become more forthcoming about this truth, and do a better job of partitioning the SSD if possible.

WIRELESS

Unlike the Lenovo Yoga, this model includes a professional-grade dual-band Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 wireless adapter for 802.11agn networks, which supports 5 GHz frequency for reduced wireless congestion. I have not had any issues with wireless performance.

NOISE

One of my favorite features about this laptop is how quiet it is. The fan is running most of the time, though very quietly, even in a silent environment. I was not very impressed with the high noise levels of the fan on the Lenovo Yoga.

WRAP-UP

There are a host of other features on this laptop, but other reviews can provide information on their function. I have documented the particular aspects which I found to be of particular concern. Overall, the positives still outweigh the negatives, and in every respect, this laptop is FAST. I plan to keep it, even though Asus still has a long way to go in fulfilling the second half of their motto, "Persistent Perfection". It still has a lot to offer compared to the competition, and, if they would get their act together with the display defects, I would even recommend it to a friend.

UPDATE 2013-02-11

Overall I am still very pleased with this laptop. I did have an issue with the CTRL key 'sticking', which may have been due to remapping the CTRL key to a dedicated END key. I removed this remapping and reinstalled the keyboard driver and have not had this problem since.

I have also been much more pleased with the touchpad since installing a more generic version of Elantech's touchpad driver available from Acer's (not ASUS's) website. I am currently using the Elantech Touchpad Driver version 11.6.8.001 (found under Acer Aspire S7-391). Touchpad sensitivity is better, palm rejection is better, and overall there are more customization options than what ASUS provides with their touchpad drivers.

Now using Elan touchpad driver version 11.7.8.5. Pointing is smooth and accurate.

Amazing notebook. Asus has really stepped upstart with all of its design. It's directly competing with thin MacBook Air, which I almost got but this is what beats the Air:

-screen resolution is 1920x1080, very crisp, bright display

-128GB flash drive

-touchscreen

-windows 8

Here is what I love about this zenbook/:

-all metal, durable design. This is no cheap plastic materials

-glass, touch screen

-ultra cool to touch, silent

-ultra fast USB 3.0, mini HDMI, display port

-only 2lbs

-fast, responsive Windows 8, boots up in 8 seconds, back from sleep in 2 seconds

-good battery life

-comes with a very nice Asus case

Here's what I didn't like:

-only 90GB of free space

-when screen is all black there are light leakage on all sides

-wish the power charger was magnetic or simpler like Vivobook

-bloatware that no average consumer needs

This is by far the best notebook I've ever owned. I've installed Adobe CS6, and it runs like butter. Much better than Samsung quality and even the overpriced Sony. Asus really gets the value, design, and quality. Would recommend to anyone who's looking for an awesome notebook.

I travel a lot for my job and I thought I would give an Ultrabook a try with touchscreen capabilities, even though I like my trusty Sony Z series lightweight 13" laptop I've had for 2 years.

Bought this on the road at Best Buy and my initial impression was great until the next 5 hotels and other buildings I used it at. Whenever there was even a 2 to 3 bar signal the wifi slowed way down. I even brought out my aging Sony and my Samsung 10" tablet to be certain it was an issue with the computer and not all the crappy wireless signals you can get at certain hotels. It was this computer. Every time I compared it, it was painfully slower than the other 2. Downloads, and playback of video news stories were constantly stopping and starting, while my Sony and tablet just played and downloaded the same files without a hitch.

So I called tech support, downloaded the latest driver, tweaked the power settings to all max, did it all to no avail. Returned the unit and bought another one a few weeks later thinking maybe it was just "that" Asus, and wanted to give it another chance. Same exact problem occurs at every hotel, and now, even at home with blazing fast wifi (50mbps). As soon as I take it even 20' away from the router it fails miserably in general wifi performance. I am a pretty accomplished techie guy and researched the hell out of this noting wifi adapter strength settings in the power settings that I read in other forums. Nothing works to eliminate this problem. Unfortunately I will be returning this one as well.

Too bad really, because in most other ways this is a great ultrabook, which is why I've been trying so hard to make it work. Just have to wait for something better around he corner.

first of all, i did not purchase this from amazon. i bought mine at bestbuy for $1099. i have also read that this particular ux31a model is a BB exclusive. i thought about leaving my impressions here too. so here we go. i love the screen. it is what got me to buy it. i spilled coffee on my macbook pro 2012 and was deemed unrepairable, so they told me they would exchange it since i bought insurance with it. i was looking at the macbook air 13in as my exchange. but came across the asus UX31A-BHI5T11, the screen caught my attention. wow! stunning screen. and the design is excellent. black, not the typical dull grey. touchscreen made it more appealing (great with windows 8). this laptop is fast and sleek. has great battery life. great keyboard thats on far with the macbooks (just wish it had dedicated brightness and volume controls instead of the FN+key combination). a great replacement for my dead macbook pro. and did i mention i love the screen lol.

the issues i have encountered (reasons why i rate it 4 stars) are:

-FINGERPRINT MAGNET. the color, the texture of this laptop allows so much smudges to appear. fingerprints on the screen is understandable as this is a touchscreen.

-128gb only gives you 60gb free space to work with (im guessing thats because of the windows 8 install (plus boatware) and theres a 20gb space partitioned for recovery thats hidden). this can be removed if you want more space. someone has managed to get 114.24gb

-light bleeding in screen. i have small amounts of light bleeding from the bottom edge of the screen. noticeable on black screens (not to bad on mine). some people reported returning their ux31a because of excessive light bleeding out. and replacement would have tolerable amounts.

-trackpad not as great as the macbooks, but good enough for me. the latest drivers reverses the two finger scrolling (mimicking how the macbooks two finger scroll is...which is what i want). for a windows machine, the trackpad is good. i have not seen a great trackpad on a windows laptop. i also wished asus should have just copied apple with the trackpad. make it bigger and minus the right and left click buttons. more room for finger magics.

-DEFAULT DISPLAY SETTINGS. i found the program POWER4GEAR limiting the screen brightness. adjust the DISPLAY SETTINGS to your liking. i personal turned of the POWER4GEAR. screen is also more on the yellowish (warmer) side. i personal would like it to be whiter. i will update this review if i find a way to get the screen to display whiter whites.

overall, a great windows 8 laptop.

I own ux31A, Love it. Also have 2 ux31E, no comparison. Once you set up the computer, you can make a back up copy of the system onto a flash drive then delete that system back from the hard drive. I have made the back up. but so far not needed the extra space, as i store a lot of stuff on mem sticks .. Volume can really be enhanced in the mixer control panel. My screen bleed is minimal, but mostly only with solid black screen, which is almost never. Two finger scrolling is a bit skippy, I find if i turn the unit OFF once every few days, a lot of things reset, and work better.

Sure this is a copy of the Mac Air, But is not the Mac a copy of other units too, just made smaller?? Cheap memory and new battery storage configurations has made this happen. But and i say But. The Asus is a Windows Computer. not Apple os. I also own a "new" mac air, and never turn it on any more. There is no comparison in the Asus and Samsung series 5 or 9 for battery power usage. The power cord is on the right side, and a bigger plug than the older model so you can feel a bit more secure with it in your lap.

I am not a big fan of Win 8 operating system, I did download Clasic Shell and got my task bar back. Opening a photo in win 8 is still cranky to me. and wish for the win 7 system. I do wish for the old media player..

Travel is great. have been on a couple of trips and the Asus performed as well as if home in my lazy boy.

I do like the unit a lot, and with a lot of trial and errors with many units, have settled on this to be the BEST for ME.

It does what it says it will. It is a small android laptop. For those who want to work on the go, like a keyboard and mouse it is perfect. The included productivity software will open and edit word, excel and powerpoint files to a degree and read images, video and .pdf documents just like the bigger laptops. Inexpensive enough to lose and limited in capacity so you won't have "all your eggs in one basket" if you misplace it. Wifi and ethernet for the internet, regular size SD cards for storage and the gps-nav software is accurate to a few meters. This is not for kids. No touch screen means I can accurately use my mouse and my Logitech Wireless mouse works great plug and play. For the elementary school agebuy them a 7" or 10" tablet for the same price to play games on.... they won't really need a "computer" till Jr. High and most could get along fine with this netbook if there's a computer at home to do the extensive editing and printing. This is a unit you need as a second computer and travelling companion.

I thought this (WOLVOL LAPTOP)looked like a toy by the pictures. I took it on a trip to London and was able to use it for WiFi and hotel check ins. The memory and included hard drive allowed the viewing of youtube with no problems. I checked my email and played with several of the android apps. This laptop is very light and easy to take with you. The laptop worked almost as good as my intel i7 processor in my desktop. The included mouse and power cord worked very well. For the price I was amazed by all the functions this item could complete.

well, i picked my Acer AS5733 up at my local wally world a little over a week ago. after cleaning up the junk apps and getting all of the updates, it's a great little machine. Also to be noted, and I'm not the only one to get this, there appears to be an unlisted update with the processor; it's an Intel i5 560M which has the turbo boost. Very nice little surprise indeed. The display is bright and vibrant with no dead pixels. Speakers are about average for a notebook; good enough for watching a movie in a quiet room. Cooling fan is dynamic and is very quiet. Only 2 USB ports and no hard drive activity light (funny how I miss something once it's gone). Unless you clean the software up first, it takes 4 DVD disks to make the factory restore disks. Haven't tried the camera yet so I cannot comment. All in all a very good buy.

Great machines So far, I have bought 4 Acer laptops and all are doing excellent. NOT one issue with any of them -so far at least!! Would definitely buy another if I have a need for one.

The laptop has a really beautiful screen, great color. The speed is also fine, and the price was good. However, after 7 months, my first problem with it is the keyboard. Perhaps it's because the number keys are on the right, so the rest are smaller, but I regularly hit the wrong keys. If I always had, no big thing, but not so. Also the touch is difficult, sometimes having to go back and press hard really slows me down. Second, the sound has problems, scratchy when changing screens, then clears up. I'm looking into plugging in another keyboard to remedy my worst problem. I can live with the rest but won't buy another Acer.

I've had this computer for about 3 months and so far its been able to do everything I want it to. Runs my main game Aion between 30-40 fps on max settings (around 50-60ish on medium), has a decent battery life (4 hours) and isn't too expensive. I've also played GW2, Tera, CIV V & Anno 2070 without any problems. As the title says I have been looking for a computer for a year that is between $500-$600, has a dedicated gfx card and is 15'.

Windows gives it a base score of 4.6

Processor: 7.1

Ram: 5.9

Gfx: 4.6

Gaming gfx: 6.5

HD: 5.9

A few gripes:

1. Fingerprint magnet

2. I usually carry my laptop in the space that's between the top of the keyboard and the edge of the screen for stability, the power button is too close to the edge of the laptop and I've accidently turned it off a few times.

3. I appreciate the minimalist design, but there's nothing to indicate when caps lock/ num lock is on.

Overall, I would recommend this comp to anyone who doesn't want to break the bank while still getting decent performance.

this computer arrived the 22nd of this month...took outta the box.......added another 4g of memory and this thing is fast. Have been a little worried as I know this version has not been out to long but i am completely satisfied. No problems once you figure windows 8 out. As a mid-range gamer I would have to give this 6 stars. At this time I have only played one game and that is WoW...runs anywhere from 60-100fps in starting zones. Have not tried dungeons or raiding with it at this time but will let you know. I run the autoselect for the video. It switches back and forth from the integrated graphics and the dedicated graphics when needed. For the price I will be buying another one in the near future. And I would also like to say Amazon customer service was excellent when I contacted them about the long wait to ship this computer. Talked with them Wednesday online and had the laptop here by 2 p.m. Friday. Thank you Randee!!!!

This laptop just blew me away. I love the sleek elegant look to it. It's not too heavy so I can take it with me on the go.

The downside is that it only comes with 4BG RAM and a 5200rpm hard drive. However with the 8GB RAM upgrade it is super snappy and fast, even with the 5200RPM hard drive. Also Windows 8 has fast boot times, even with this slow hard drive.

Windows 8 is really not bad at all once you "de-suck it" with one of the various programs available that let you bring back and customize the start menu and also lets you boot up to the desktop. I personally went with "startisback". It cost 3 bucks and gives you 2 licenses to use on 2 PCs.

Graphically this laptop is awesome! I can run Resident Evil 6 at max settings at 60fps as well as Deus Ex human revolution on high at 60fps. For the price you pay, it's a steal!

The battery life is decent when you set it to power saver, about 3 hours, when you're using wifi, longer without it. But if you want longer battery life get a 12-cell battery. But for me it's not an issue since I'm usually connected to the wall.

All in all, if you're looking for power, performance and decent gaming at a cheap price. This is it! you can't go wrong at this price. :)

This is by far the best laptop for the dollar that I could find. Very sleek looking machine. It is also very thin. Not Ultrabook thin but thin for a laptop with an I5 and a dedicated GPU. The Laptop seems to be well built, pretty sturdy. No Flex. I also added another 4 gigs of memory to the Laptop. Overall the machine is pretty fast. I was surprised how well it ran Sim City and Mass Effect 3. The only thing that I don't really care for is the track pad. It works but it seems a little sensitive to clicks. I also don't like the fact that its not in the center. But that's just me. Highly recommend this machine to anyone looking for something with a little kick but dont want to spend an arm and a leg on a good performing machine.

To get the maximum out of this laptop you will need some expertise. Apart from a slow disk, this is a two-GPU machine which uses NVIDIA Optimus technology to switch between uses. You have relatively low control over what get used where, and often things cause errors. Updating drivers can also be painful. If you'd like to go with it anyway, here are some things to note:

1. Do not set Chrome to use NVIDIA GPU but use chrome:flags to enable using the GPU. Otherwise it will either be too slow or work with errors.

2. The disk is slow; consider upgrading to SSD.

3. The screen resolution is low and you will notice that. I don't care much for it, but I know many people who do.

4. Battery life is good / satisfactory.

I'm a repeat gateway consumer. Early last year, I purchased this laptop to replace my old mx6214 model. Well, a year and a half later, I'm typing this review on the trusty mx6214. It seems that the NV5503 I purchased has a faulty hard drive. Or at least it does not have the hard drive lifespan I would expect. I didn't know that Gateway had been purchased by ACER in 2007. I can't confirm that the buyout had anything to do with the substandard product, but now I get to either figure out how to replace a hard drive and somehow get the OS/files over to the new drive, or get a new computer. Ick.

I took my dad to a computer store and we got this laptop at a decent price. It's solid, great size, and doesn't feel cheap. It has a numpad and worked great for my dad who is of older age. I'd say battery life was 3-4 hours. Keyboard felt good too.

I purchased this item (not through Amazon) after doing some research online visiting various sites. I was not able to find any reviews at the time of my purchase, but as I wanted a faster processing speed than my old laptop, plus Blu-Ray capability, and a host of other things, I am more than pleased with my purchase. I do like the raised keys (like a Mac), the size of the screen is suitable for my needs, the finish is great on it. I am not a fan of the finger pads, so purchased a wireless mouse, which is fine with me. I have only just started using it, but now that I have loaded my Navigator speech to text program on it, look forward to getting a lot of paperwork at home done much more quickly than previously. The start up and close down time is much faster as well. Good all around. I look forward to reading what other users find with this product.

I do a lot of multimedia work, and I'm very pleased with how well this laptop works for that purpose. Even while editing large video files and editing photos simultaneously in two processor-heavy programs, this baby doesn't slow down or give me any crap. This speedy laptop can handle anything it seems. It's very well integrated with viewing and working on multimedia files, and the overall speed and performance is to die for. Top tier laptop in my opinion.

...And it only gets two stars. I've taken very good care of the battery hell, I only use the battery when I'm on the move, or while doing smaller tasks. I rarely do anything multimedia-heavy with the battery in, because I know that those things will strain the battery. And I've also made sure to keep the battery cool as much as possible. So even after taking measures like that to ensure a long battery life, after only a few months the battery started draining faster than a water bottle with a hole in it. Oh, and last month it started getting dead pixels, and they're spreading. So I've only been able to get a little over a year out of this, and now I have to search for a new laptop. :(

This is a very short review. I Love everything about the laptop. It works great, looks great, and has excellent battery life.

But, hey, SONY, what were you thinking when you designed the dvd tray? There is no way you can handle the laptop without accidentaly activating and therefore opening the dvd tray. Every. Single. Time.

If you touch the tray, at almost any point of it, it opens up. Really really annoying....

I used to keep it in my backpack but the lappy is so thin and the screen so poorly protected that it has scratches on it now from the keyboard. It's fast though. Never put any weight on it and forget about discs and this could be a good pc for you.

I purchased a 17.3 inch HP laptop and it was defective so I returned it.

I then ordered this Toshiba, making it the 5th Toshiba I have owned.

I have tried Lenovo, HP and Dell but I always end up using a Toshiba long term as the other brands always seemed to disappoint me.

Before I took the HP back, it was killing my wireless router, making me reboot it at least twice a day.

I called HP and they claimed it was a Microsoft 8 problem and I had my doubts about that.

I went to school to learn how to build and repair computers and know a bit about how they should work.

I also went to school to get my Microsoft Network Administrator certification.

Since I have been using this machine (now around 3 weeks), the router has never stopped so I believe the problem was with the HP machine, not Windows 8.

I don't know if it is me or that Toshiba makes the best laptops on the market, but Toshiba has always worked best for me.

Two of my three adult children use Toshiba laptops and the other brand was purshased because of a special deal.

I build and own several websites and FadedFootsteps is one of them if you wish, feel free to contact me through that website if you want to talk about laptops or find a a Civil War Veteran in your family.

I need lots of processing power to edit images and perform multiple tasks and this Toshiba has all I need to do a good job and not wait for processes to finish.

It is my understanding that laptop prices may be going to go up this fall 2013 as people move to "pad" devices and less laptops are built, so now is the time to buy a laptop if you have been on the fence about buying one.

The quad core processor is smooth and fast, the Toshiba laptop came with 6gigs of ram and I upgraded to 16gigs (purchased from Amazon) Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)making this an amazing machine.

I have it loaded with Office 2013 and several software editing packages and loads and loads of pictures and files and it is running great.

This seems to be a fine laptop, I've been traveling with it for a couple of months now. It seems a bit finicky with internet (WIFI) connections, but that may just be due to the quality of available connections. However, the track pad is just awful. Sometimes when I don't even touch the touch pad, the mouse pointer jumps around. I don't like the feel of the pad surface, and it's not smooth so it's hard for me to make subtle gestures consistently. I've turned off all the bells and whistles (i.e., two finger gestures) and turned down sensitivity in the hopes it will respond only to deliberate touches on the pad, but it's still overly finicky sometimes and not very responsive other times. I had heard about this problem before buying, and usually use a mouse anyway, but it's still a problem.

The keyboard is a bit stiff for me. I've had many Dells and, in this size category, Dell has done better with both the keyboard and the touch pad.

The startup speed is awesome.

Win8 is a mess...right in line with the usual in-between operating systems (Win ME, Vista, etc.) that Microsoft puts out in alternating cycles. I expect the next OS will be great. There may be benefits 'under the hood' in terms of speed and security, so I'm keeping W8, but I have installed third party software to suppress the Win8 experience, and that's acceptable, but still a step back from Win7 usability.

Overall, I like the laptop for what it does well and tolerate it for what it doesn't.

For the price, I rate it 3. In terms of functionality and performacne, I would rate it a 4. I can't get to five based on the horrible touch pad. The Win8 issue is not Dell's fault.

I bought mine directly from Dell. Here are the pros--It is extremely light and compact with a large screen for its size. It feels almost like an ipad (which I have) in weight. The carbon fiber back really helps and gives it a bit of a grip on your lap. It also doesn't burn your thighs like a traditional laptop. The USB ports make this a living breathing computer and with windows installed I find myself reaching for this more than my ipad. Then again, I spend most of my time making word documents, powerpoints, spreadsheets, and stats rather than surfing the web and checking email. Although small, the chicklet keypad isn't cramped and feels smooth under your fingers.

The cons: The TN display isn't great. I prefer wider viewing angles than this. I use mine plugged in and the power cord doesn't click into the computer. Mine has a bad habit of falling out if I twitch just a little and then you end up draining your battery and not knowing it. Dell should have thought this through a bit more. An SD card port would have been nice, but that's easy enough to fix with a couple of USB ports. The mouse pad is horrible--I mean terrible. It jumps around whether you touch it or not. The keyboard feels great and the fact that it lights up is another plus, but the space bar sticks and so do several other keys. I expect that after five years of pounding on a computer. I don't expect it when it is brand new. Between the cord issues, the poor tracking on the pad, and the sticky keys, I expect better especially given what I paid for it.

Dell support, install of fixing it right away started playing delay tactics restoring system to factory settings, updating driver that I've already updated, and many many more for months until the one year warranty expired. Right after that, they told me "sorry, product is no longer under warranty. Would you like to buy/extend your warranty?" YES!

The mouse problem has gotten worse. Flickers so often, repeatedly that the system is essentially useless. At the moment the system will not allow me update ANY of the .NET frameworks which means i cant install any OEM software that I bought (Office 20xx, adobe acrobat, etc). PLEASE let the time I spent writing this be worth something. Don't buy this product!!

Pros: sleek, light weight

Cons: mouse/trackpad makes the system useless after close to a year, USB ports stop working after a year, software install issues. Zero support from dell.

For the money you pay for, this product deserves a 0.5 star

Incredible laptop. I nuked the OS when I received it and installed Linux Mint and have not one bad thing to say about it. It's incredibly fast, light and durable. It feels very well made yet has some features I wish Apple would consider for their own laptops. For instance, I love aluminum cased laptops, but better for heat dissipation, looks great and durability. However when working with an all aluminum laptop it can get VERY hot and tends to be a bit slippery if on your clothed lap. This XPS is designed perfectly with a textured rubber of sorts on the bottom so it doesn't slide yet maintains the aluminum cover and frame.

I bought an ASUS laptop from PC Outlet, and I wish I would never have. I bought it on the 21st of June, they never sent it until the 24th, and I received it on my birthday, the 25th. I didn't start using it until July 24th and I only used it for 9 days, it quit working, it wouldn't turn on, I finally got that to work by taking the battery out, then it worked then the screen quit working, I couldn't get anything to come up, I had to do a complete reboot of the system. It worked again for a day, I didn't turn it off but just closed the lid. I opened the lid about an hour or so later and it would not turn on again, and nothing on the screen, again.

The company would not give me my money back they said the 30 day warranty was not in affect. Gee how can I get the warranty up and going on it if I don't received it until 4 days after I buy it? To me the warranty started from the day that I received it.

I had to send it back to ASUS to get repaired, I got it back, but this time they didn't send a battery back with it.

What's wrong with this company?

I'll never buy from them again.I definitely WOULD NOT recommend this company,PC Outlet.

I don't blame Amazon, I'll always buy from them.
