The only thing keeping me from buying this laptop is the incorrect description of the processor.

The ThinkPad X131e 33722-VU has an AMD processor. See page 110 of:This model has the features I want, including the AMD E2-1800 CPU, an a/b/g/n WLAN card and Windows 7 Pro64.

I'll feel comfortable about making the purchase when this advertised information is made correct.

I thought this laptop was suppose to be tough. I got it and with in a week I noticed the screen was flickering and turning blue. the battery was advertised as having 8.5 Hrs of life but I am lucky if I get 4 Hrs of use out of it.

Honest reviews on Lenovo X131e 33722VU 11.6-Inch Laptop

Product worked fine, and as expected...until we began the process of configuring for mobile use: then it was discovered the cellular antenna is malfunctioning if not broken. To be certain, we tested a number of mobile modems (GOBI 3000, etc) before concluding it was the x131e itself that was at fault. Attempted RMA, only to discover it was 1 day past 30 day period...so no return authorized by vendor. I'm stuck with a device purchased for a mobile user, and cannot use it as such. I have over a dozen others of this make functioning properly, so I the device series is not bad, but only this device. Unfortunately the vendor is not willing to compromise, and will be stricken from my company list of approved vendors. I am not referencing Lenovo here, but ANTONLINE.COM

I have been using this machine for about 2 weeks now, and I can't bear to part with it. Yes, there are a couple of drawbacks:

Screen angle does not tilt I mostly use it in tablet format or docked to an external monitor. It hasn't really been too much of a drawback for me.

Wifi strength. This is well noted. I see some lags when watching Netflix, but otherwise it hasn't been an issue.

Stylus easily slides out of its holder. Very annoying, and I think I'd better stock up on styli.

Screen is unprotected when unit is not is use. A sleeve solves this problem, but I'd rather not have the problem to begin with.

Not as many apps available as the Apple AppStore (I know, I know, Windows 8, not the unit's problem anyone in the mood to create a feet and inches calculator???)

But the pros! Oh, the pros!

Stylus is superb. I mark up a lot of drawings with this using both Note Anytime, OneNote and Word, and it never misses a beat.

Processing power has just as much grunt as my regular office laptop

Weight (or lack thereof!) I travel A LOT! Not having to lug around an iPad and a laptop has saved my back. Plus, I also schlep to and from graduate school, so this is a real boon.

Screen size perfect when more than one person needs to view a document or a drawing.

Battery life I've gone 8 hours on a single charge. That has equated to not having to lug a power adapter to job sites (where there usually isn't anywhere to plug into, anyway!)

the "ooh, ahh!" factor undeniably good looking, and the envy of everyone I work with (evil grin!)

Windows 8 I am/was a die-hard iPad fan. I haven't touched my iPad in over a week this is REALLY saying something.

This unit really makes Windows 8 shine. I never thought I would retire my iPad, but it's starting to look to me that I have no real reason to keep it.

UPDATE

======

I love this unit so much I took it back after 2 weeks. And upgraded to the I7 model. I truly believe this unit can replace my everyday laptop and my iPad. My chiropractor may never see me again! So far, my original review still stands.

Full size HDMI

Touch screen (I really like the Stylus)

Light weight

I would give it a 5 Star, if I could adjust the screen angle. It is a great bother, They offer only 1 position. In my offices, I have to prop it up to get away from the glare from the florescent lighting. I just got a foam calculator wedge to prop it on. The only other issue thus far, I would have preferred the screen is protected when closed.

cracked my surface pro screen awhile ago, and this is my replacement to the surface pro.

this is more of an ultrabook compared to the tablet factor of the Surface pro. the slider design works really well and transforms from tablet to ultrabook very easily. the ergonomics while typing on the lap is great, identical to a regular laptop, as opposed to surface and type cover which you have to balance it meticulously as not to tip over. the screen is beautiful and yields vivid color, almost on par with the retina MacBook pro.

the slider form factor is very practical and easy to use. however there are some issues Sony needs to iron out before slider ultrabook/tablet really takes off. the machine is made in japan, but as oppose to others positive review, the build quality is not quite top notch yet. my unit has one stuck pixel that refuses to go away, and the rear plastic panel where the ports/vent are is loose, and while in tablet mode the lid dose not close flush with the keyboard and yields some creaking noise.

the machine does come with quite a bit of bloatwares and takes a bit to uninstall.

overall, this is nice ultrabook/tablet combo if you are looking for something unconventional but practical.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO Duo SVD13213CXW 13.3-Inch Convertible Touchscreen

Nice design and lightweight for a laptop. Works great, fast, & responsive touchscreen. The touchpad need improvement or perhaps need some calibration tha I have not had a chance to play with it. Cursor moves unintentionally while typing, maybe too sensitive.

Bear in mind, I bought mine at my nearest Sony Store in person, but I thought I would never find an ultrabook/tablet convertible combo. This is such a svelte package carbon fiber body, made in Japan, gorgeous 1920x1080 screen, quick boot-up, and Win8 finally gets a worthy vessel. My ideal portable laptop (my other one's a Qosmio 18.4"). I did my research before I bought it (a lot, considering how busy I was a few weeks ago, and how semi-impulsive this was), but it seemed it wasn't enough research to justify my owning it.

A day after I purchased it, I had WiFi issues on the same level as the new Haswell Macbook Airs. It took 3-4 hours for the SVD to connect to my home WiFi, which was a shock. I didn't want to deal with constant software updates to fix this. Also, reading more into SVD's pen input option, the choice for an N-Trig was a negative on a couple sites and forums, and the denial of Wacom to support it (or WinTab support denied) was also a key factor in my returning it. I wanted to write notes down as well as have compatibility with Photoshop, Illustrator, and other art software, especially from support from Wacom. You could probably imagine how disappointed I was when I returned it.

I will be eagerly waiting for the ATIV Q with S Pen tech. I hope you all have better luck with the SVD or you take my words seriously and wait as well.

I decided for my new laptop to be an ASUS based on some of my friends recommendations. Not this one in particular but they all had old ASUS laptops which lasted them for years without experiencing any problem at all.

I chose this model because I need a lot of hard drive space for my work, and I have always hated to use an external hardrive. For this reason, I am very happy with it. Not only that, but it performs very good in general, specially because it has a good processor and lots of RAM.

There are two things that I'm unsatisfied with, one of them very important. The battery life is extremely short. Even with the screen brightness lowered to almost the minimum, the battery is out in just over 1 hour. On top of that, sometimes it indicates that the battery is not present even though its there and fully charge. Whenever this happens, I am forced to shut down the computer, remove the battery and then plug it in again. This has caused me lots of problems. It could be that this one is defect, but I cannot make an exchange because I live in Europe and bought it in one of my trips to USA.

The second problem is that sometimes, when I turn it on, the fan starts to work and it never stops until I shut it down and turn it back on. I am aware that this could be a software problem, because the day that I received it, the first thing that I did was remove Windows 8 (which is terrible), and installed Ubuntu instead. So it may be that this is causing the fan to go mad sometimes, but because of that experience with the battery, I doubt that is the case.

I hope this helps someone with the desition. When I got it, there were no reviews. I am sure that the next laptop I will buy is not going to be an ASUS

very strong and powerful, good for the all the new games at high graphics settings.

get a little to warm to my opinion on the left side (fan air exit) when running heavy games but still perform perfectly

Win 8 is pretty OK too my surprise and runs flawlessly even when running virtual programs like VMware.

but the big benefit is the 16GB ram which really is limitless when running a bunch of stuff together. perfect for multiple virtual machine "playing"

All the Amazon delivery and service part was flawless... overall a very successful perches for me

I bought this computer 6 months ago and immediately realized it had a graphics/video issue. I contacted tech support, who gave me the run-around until I told them to escalate my case. The Case Manager kept denying there was an issue and then closed the case without it being resolved. I filed a complaint with the BBB, which provoked HP to reopen my case with another Case Manager, who has now rendered the computer completely unusable. After he did this and sent me recovery CDs (which the laptop won't even open-that's how bad he ruined it), HP told the BBB that they resolved the issue by sending the CDs. The CDs had nothing to do with the original issue and don't remedy either issue. This is how they treat their customers, so it's best to stay away.

i like the 3d, as it's not 30 year old shutter glasses , just the polarized glasses like the movie theater uses, it's a shame that there is not alot more manufactures using this setup, as it works good, now i'm waiting for someone to get a TV out with the same set up, that don't cost a arm or leg. and i'm not talking about the old shutter glasses set ups.

as for the laptop it self, it runs alittle on the warm side, could use better cooling, but as long as you are not playing games on it, that push the gpu, or push the cpu tomuch it works fine.

This is one of the best laptop I ever had and I love it!!! I am an IT pro guy and so far have no Negative remarks about this laptop. Haha as a matter of fact I am writing this review from my new Y560d laptop and enjoying every bit of typing on it. It smooth and works like a charm. Super fast! and though I am not into computer games, I do a lot of developing and programming and have many Microsoft tools and applications installed on this, and they work like a charm! I hate people writing bad reviews and giving 1 star because the screen is shiny or because the ideapad logo has a light underneath it etc etc....blah blah stupid idiotic reviews! I would rate this product 5 stars, though it has only been 3 days I am using this product flawlessly, I am sure it will last long. I am a avid IBM/Thinkpad/Lenovo fan and this is my 1st Ideapad from Lenovo. Its smart and there is nothing not to like about it!

PROS: i7 Processor from Intel (Mindblowing), Excellent Keyboard and Touchpad (Works flawlessly), LED superb screen (I hate those idiots complaining about screen resolution is not enough, what do you need a microscope to view your laptop??? get real!). Amazing Graphics and ATI 1GB dedicated Graphics card makes it awesome! 4GB of RAM it came with and can be upgraded to max 8GB (more then enough, you don't need to run High end Mainframe computing here...) JBL Dolby Digital Home Theatre srround sound. Awesome in any laptops I have owned so far! Oh yes the beautiful design and a beautiful Tatoo on the front, makes the laptop look more sexy :) Above all, super quiet and no noise at all!!!

Well I have all praises and more positive things to write about this Y560d laptop and I cannot think of any negative thing.

Cons: None, NIL, Nada!

Ok yes this is a review from only 3 days using the laptop and if anything changes (I am positive it won't) I will update my review!

The computer is great. It has fast speeds on most games as long as it's plugged in, it's great for all of my school work, gaming, youtubing, etc. But it has huge problems. It overheats and crashes if it doesn't have a computer fan which can prove to be a huge problem. It crashes often, but if you take proper care of it it's still a good computer.

Reviews of DELL INSPIRON 1420 14.1-Inch Laptop

DELL INSPIRON 1420 14.1-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars

I bought this Dell inspiron about a year ago to replace my 6-year old gateway. I looked around at prices for lightweight but powerful laptops including macs, gateways, hps and sonys. The inspiron is not the lightest available for its power class (core 2 duo, 3G ram, 250G hard drive) and it even got miserable reviews on the battery life, but for the price, there was no competition.

Pros:

Regular battery regularly lasts over 3.5 hours even after 1 year of daily use.

9-cell battery regularly lasts over 5 hours even after 1 year of daily use.

It's pink :)

Built in webcam, speakers, microphone all great for skyping etc.

SD card reader and USB's on BOTH sides (6 total) make for nice use of a portable mouse & other gadgets.

Cons:

It's really fat and heavy. In fact my first impression of what I thought would be a lightweight model was "oh crap it's heavy!" When I tried to buy a protective sleeve, the store told me they didn't have any for laptops as fat as the inspiron :)

The mousepad is consistently unresponsive! Not only does it fail to recognize my strokes if my finger accumulates even a little perspiration, but it often takes several minutes after bootup to recognize vertical strokes, and only moves horizontally even after opening and running several programs. It also randomly "clicks" so that when I'm typing, my cursor jumps around despite taking extra care not to touch the mousepad (ironically, it just did it as I was typing this sentence!). This is ultimately not cool and perhaps the main motivation for not liking this machine -you can't like it if you can't use it.

The built in mic and webcam weren't recognizable by linux software until the 9.10 release. pretty upsetting from a company that sells linux based machines.

Despite having a 4-year customer support and insurance plan, I still can't figure out how to get hold of a Dell representative -their website is completely incomprehensible making my customer support agreement nearly useless.

Finally, the screen is pretty dim. in fact, the dimness that they use to generate the battery life is so dark that it hurts my 26 year old eyes to read. even now, plugged in, the screen's whites are actually pretty gray.

------------------------

So overall I really expected more from a machine that, after customization, cost me about $1200. When you spend that kind of money on something, you really expect it to be kind of pleasant, if not even enjoyable to use. After all, dual processor, huge hard drive and battery life of 3-5 hours isn't even competition any more.

...but, it does work. Furthermore, owing to my genius decision to switch to linux, it also recognizes every printer I've ever plugged in to immediately without installation of drivers. This is pretty cool.

I disagree on many points with the previous reviewer. I agree on all the good points, and yes, this laptop is a bit on the heavy side, but it's the one I keep at home on my desk and IS easily portable from room to room. I have also traveled with it and used it at work many times without any problems, but because of its size and weight, I do prefer using my netbook for travel. However, part of the reason it may be a little heavy is because it is a strong and well-built computer, one built to last! I have had absolutely no problems with the keyboard or with anything else, and suspect maybe there was something defective with the previous reviewer's computer. I also love the crystal-clear display and the large screen. My computer is black and silver and I love its elegant yet retro look. I purchased it over two years ago, and expect and hope to be using it for several more years. Even my husband, who is a diehard Mac user/fan, enjoys using my computer!

Honest reviews on DELL INSPIRON 1420 14.1-Inch Laptop

I have had this laptop for almost 6 years and it still runs almost as smoothly as when I got it. I rarely turn it off, carry it with me everywhere, and am using it almost constantly. The battery life is not so great anymore, but I really can't complain. I love my computer. It's a simple machine but it works well and it is sturdy!

If you're looking for a reasonably priced workhorse of a machine, this is a sure bet.

I've had this machine for 3 and 1/2 years now. I've taken it all over the world. It is the best Dell I've had (and I've had six over the years) and it's still going strong.

I bought this machine refurbished from Dell for about 600 bucks, with Vista, Webcam, small hard drive, and no bluetooth. Over the years I've easily upgraded this machine as needed, now to Windows 7, 360 HD, bluetooth, and 4 GB of memory, and 9 cell battery. It's just now starting to reach the end of it's work-life, but I think I will get another year out of it for my purposes.

I have carried this laptop all over the world. It has an cast aluminum exterior body (not plastic like the 1520) and it's worn well under hard conditions. I've had some minor problems with the keyboard, but because it's modular in construction, popping in a new one was a snap.

This machine has done everything I've asked of it. It's the first Dell I've had that I didn't feel I would have to throw away after 2 years. Whoever was on the design team for this machine did a good job.

It's got an easy to reach hard drive, easy to reach memory expansion, easy to exchange battery, a combo card reader, an sd card reader, dvd drive, external monitor plug, s-video plug, four USB plugs and a firewire plug. It is not heavy, despite the review from another user (his problems are because he was running Linux on a Windows-based machine and he was having driver issues.) But with the 9 cell battery, you can feel the weight. The 9 cell gives plenty of power, and I bought mine off ebay (not from Dell). The battery has been in use for 3 1/2 years and is still holding a charge quite well. I use the battery that came with the machine as a backup on long flights.

Vista stunk on this machine, but it was usable. Windows 7 (running 32 bit mode) turns this machine into a workhorse.

I like the screen resolution, and the track pad can be easily configured (despite the other reviewer's comments).

As I was anticipating the demise of this machine in the future I began looking at everything out there under a thousand bucks. Then, by accident, I shorted out the video on the motherboard (completely my fault). So then I really had to decide what I was going to do to replace this machine. I again looked at everything out there (refurb'd Macs, new Toshiba 835r, another Dell 14r, HP's) and finally concluded that I'd rather get a used motherboard and keep the Dell 1420 going. For less than 120 bucks, it's now back in business, and I can put off a purchase for another year (at least).

Talk about loyalty, eh?

This machine is a dynamo. If you can find a decent on used, grab it. Just don't get the NVIDIA graphic card models, as they have a flaw. Get the one with the integrated Intel graphics card. You won't be sorry.

When I sold computers in the 80's, I used to tell customers do the following: Make a big cross on a piece of paper. Mark the First box APPLICATION, the Second box PRICE, the Third box FEATURES and the Fourth Box I Forget (Hey, the 80's were 30 years ago and I've killed off half my brain cells since then in partying!!!). Under APPLICATION, I wrote BUSINESS COMPUTER (hvy typing, business powerpoint graphics presentations, hvy internet surfing) and Music Downloads). Under Price I went C-H-E-A-P (sub $600.00) as I had recently lost my job through my whistleblowing efforts. Under Features, I demanded a GOOD touchType keyboard as the 'deal killer' (NO CHICKLET KeyBoard for me!!!), a 15.6" LED Screen, 4GB Ram (DDR3's) 320GB HD and an INTEL Core i5 processor (because I wanted a system I could use, abuse and throw away after FIVE YEARS). I left the Fourth Box Blank (although I could have put SOFTWARE as in WIN 7 64bit OPSYS) in memorium to my dead brain cells.

The LENOVO (Ex IBM) G560 Essentials is the KING of the throw away Business Computers and I would recommend it STRONGLY for all HS/College Students/Business Professionals as a CHEAP but Great Computer.

STRENGHTS: C-H-E-A-P!!! Although it retails for $699.00 list, I paid $549.00 for mine at a Brick & Mortar Electronics store. If you pay more than $600.00 for it, you've been ripped off!!!

CPU: Intel Corei5-450 Dual Core with Hyperthreading. FYI, Intel only makes one chip, the Core-i7. It sells broken/detuned Corei7 chips as Corei5s and Corei3s. Don't buy the Corei3 chips as they will be obsolete two years after you take the computer home. Hold out for a Corei5 machine.

RAM: 4GB DDR3s---can be upped to 8GB but you have to throw away the perfectly good twin banked 2GB sticks. I say up yer RAM in 2.5 years when prices drop

CHIPSET: The extremely mediocre HM57. If a CPU is analogious to a car's engine, the CHIPSET is analogious to the transmission---it doesn't matter if you have a SuperCharged 640 BHP engine if you can't get your tranny out of 2D Gear!!!

KEYBOARD/Screen. Keyboard is THE BEST on the market and the 15.6" LED screen is very good. This sold the machine for me. I also liked Aluminum wristpad=a nice tactile feel for what is a soft, flimsy 'plastically' computer.

BATTY MGT: Battery (LiON) is good at approximately 3hrs typing mode or 1.5hrs game mode

HD: 320GB This is the Absolute minumum you should accept. Don't spend more $ for more space now that External 1Tetrabyte drives are going for $69.00 each and 2T externals are going for under $100.00

Features: 2 USBs, 1 eSATAp port (use this for external HD hook-up) and a HDMI port (which is wasteful as the graphics can't handle HD/BlueRay resolution).

Weaknesses: THIS IS NOT A GAMING PLATFORM!!! The HM57 Chipset is bad enough but when coupled with Intel's integrated HD Graphics card (one step up from its wretched 4500 integrated graphics card), it barely reproduces VGA graphics, let alone HD stuff. HP makes a good BlueRay ready computer with dedicated graphics card which will cream this computer BUT the keyboard sucks!!!

SOUND: SUCKS---the sound quality from my Sprint phone sounds better!!! So What? Ever hear of HEADPHONES? A stand alone computer amp with integrated sub/Pre-amp? I N-E-V-E-R take my computer out anywhere without my TRAVELPRO rolling suiter which has room for my joystick and my computer amp. NOTHING freaks fellow travelers out when I start running over screaming/cursing pedestrians or lobbing molotov cocktails at screaming gangbangers in GTA Vice City (an ancient 2002 game).

RECOMMENDATION: A GREAT SCHOOL/Business THROW AWAY Sub $600.00 Notebook. It is thin, modern looking and types great. I H-A-T-E computers because they age like a carton of milk. Take home a $2,000.00 desktop replacement laptop and SIXTEEN DAYS LATER, a better computer at 1/2 the price will be for sale---thus invalidating your buying decision, your mental soundness, your manhood. I paid $549.00 for mine so when the price drops to nothing or something better hits the market, I can shrugg "Whattya want---I bought a throw away computer for $549.00 and I already got my money's worth outta it". A Core i5 for $549? BUY IT, USE IT, THROW IT AWAY!

I bought this laptop primarily to use in a mobile recording setup with a firewire interface. The computer didn't come with too much bloatware, but I still removed it none the less. I like the fact that it has an eSata/USB combo port on it, HDMI and an express slot for my firewire card. I can stream 26 channels of digital audio to my DAW from my firewire recording interface without a glitch. I also hook it up to my main 42" tv and stream Netflix and the picture and sound are fantastic. I was a little concerned that it used integrated video instead of an add-on video card, since this usually translates into poor video and overall system performance. Kudos to Intel as this is not the case! For under 700 bucks this was a great value.

I needed a new laptop for college and after doing a lot of research settled on this Lenovo. Works just fine, I've never had any frustration with it, and it does everything I need it to do.

Comes with a lot of useless features like Veriface, which I guess is cool.

The cursor pad takes a little getting used to, I just have to tell everyone else that is using my computer to TAP, not click.

But it's lasted me 2 years now and still going strong. I even dropped it once but only very minor outer damage.

I really am suprised at how much I am liking this little sucker the more I use it, the back lit keyboard is really nice for myself. I got it in a pinch as i have been traveling a little more then usual. I bought it really expecting to return it, thinking the overall (especially screen) size was too small. I can say that due to overall quality, and design, i am really impressed, of course there is the bloatware one must get rid of, but one of the biggest things I like is the keyboard, I am not a great typest or even a typist, so this is such a nice suprise, i guess its just the ergonomics are so well thought out or the "solid" feel maybe...but its great! watching any kind of news video, or a true 1080HD so far is stellar on this little screen, the wireless antenna is simply rockingly sensitive, the best at picking up signals compared to others everytime I have checked another laptop and mine together.

I was seconds away from purchasing an Apple Macbook Air, due to they're design in their quality of materials and ergonomics philosophy, I was sold once I picked it up and "felt" how well made and "saw" the fit and finish and "knew" of the great customer satisfaction apple provides. The saleman and I went to one certain site i couldnt use my desktop for, the only site the portability was important (paramount really) I needed to use a laptop for, and the software to update the speed and redlight camera databases only worked with windows 7, the reason I am telling the whole story is....I am comparing it to the Macbook Air 13" which was aluminium, not plastic, and running Mac OS, so the sony doesnt have a better material for its casing, apple gets that one, and the OS is your call as I certainly have nothing against Windows 7 (its the bomb IMHO) so....the build quality is second to none (up to and including Apple) and due to its ability to do everything I need, and do it with this awesome keyboard and solid build, an example of this is; the hinges on screen(and screen) are built very well, and balanced perfectly (slightly loosened over time so-as to lift up EXACTLY like the macbooks. I dont forget the Apple's are the benchmark, but sony did thier homework on them, its styled very much like a macbook air, slightly larger, but it was $600 dollars less, and for the price the sony had a faster processer then the air with its core duo (at time of this writing, expected updates anytime), vs i5, 500gb HDD vs 640gb, and numerous other little thing you get (and dont get without buying an Apple) I personally feel like its my own Windows Macbook, only because its built so damn well....

If you are looking for a "smaller" sized, quality laptop on par, and in some way maybe even an edge' on others, and certainly better then your kids 15" "run of the mill" school laptop, this little baby is fast, huge HDD, great Xtra's HDD protection, and the ever getting cooler and more useful (to myself) intel wireless display then its gonna end up being a good choice, even for a guy thinking he was gonna take it back, now its my buddy, and because it is small, yet well built, I use it and take it more then all other computers, even when not traveling, my new 17" toshiba sits, while i grab the lil one thats not only fast, reliable and looks great, has a keyboard that make it easy for me to type, which is important to me..

I bought the this new at BestBuy for $1,050 and have regretted every minute of owning this machine.

The Software is extremely faulty (but this is Microsoft's fault, not Sony).

The hardware looked great first, and attracted me to buying it in the first place. Two months down the road the whole top of the computer is peeling off from normal use. The computer is only 4 months old and it looks like it is 4 years old now. The quality of the materials is extremely low and cheap. This computer probably costs Sony $100 bucks to make.

The interior hardware worked for two months and then the Wiimax adapter completely broke down. I called Sony support and they re-installed the drivers 3 times. By the third time the Sony rep said that it was a hardware issue and I had to send the computer to Sony for repair. You do not want to hear this with a brand new laptop.

I have regretted owning this and am disappointed that Sony created such a bad product and charged us over $1,000 for it. Had I known the hardware and the exterior of the laptop was going to peel off like a sticker then I would have gone ahead and bought a cheaper brand, perhaps an HP or a Lenovo.

Sony never called me back to help with the repair and they never sent me any additional information after contacting them 3-4 times.

I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I got a great deal on this computer through Amazon and it is by far the best computer I have owned. Given that I've had a Dell and HP, this VAIO was a huge step up from both. The processor is insanely fast. I just got done watching live TV while downloading songs at the same time and this laptop had no problems. Highly recommended!

I got this laptop a while ago because it seemed to be a good fit for all the specs, plus it was pretty sharp IMO. It was great for a little while, everything was fast and worked perfectly. After a while it started getting a bit slower and now it makes this awful sound. kind of a grinding, clicking sound. I am not sure if this is the fan or the hard drive, or if it can be even be fixed. So based on my experience with this computer I would recommend you to keep looking and find something better. I know for a fact that there are better computers for cheaper prices. Don't waste your money.

Review of Dell Inspiron 14" Laptop (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 2450M Processor, 6

Dell Inspiron 14' Laptop Espresso Black

I read 3 or 4 computer websites about the Dell Inspiron 14z before purchasing on Amazon, and my experience is in line with those reviews. (I ordered the model with i5 processor/6 GB of RAM). My family has several other Dell Inspiron 14-inch laptops; this is our first 14z. (And Dell, if you're reading this, I really wanted to buy another 14R, but the switchable lids make it feel cheap. It's a computer, not a toy). Anyway, back my review:

Good:

Lightweight and thin, yet sturdy

Very good processor speed (probably worth getting the i5)

Accessible keyboard

Three USB ports

Bright, clear screen

1 year of McAfee

Windows 7

Could be better:

Port covers are not necessary and get in the way

The mouse buttons take a lot of effort to "click" (and as such, I would not recommend this computer for a small child)

Does not have the Power DVD software common to previous Dell laptops I've purchased

And, unfortunately, includes a lot of software you probably won't want. The first 30 minutes of using this computer was a struggle among all the various "helpful" programs all simultaneously expecting to be registered, activated and/or updated. A "Nero" program was particularly annoying and could not be turned off, only minimized; I wound up uninstalling it altogether.

Surface areas easily show fingerprints

I would have liked to add the optional backlit keyboard, but it is only available on the top-of-the-line 14z model for $200 more

All in all, a good value, and I estimate I saved $60 buying from Amazon rather than direct from Dell.

Short story: Stay way. I have had multiple problems with this laptop and Dell support can not fix said problems.

I needed a laptop for school that could handle CAD programs, handle computational programs, have a good battery, and be portable. At the time my Toshiba Satellite had lasted me a good 4 years but the hard drive was becoming spotty and the battery life was decreasing. I decided to upgrade and after a little looking around I decided on the Dell Inspiron 14z. It looked good for a decent price. I quickly received the laptop from Amazon and the Dell was considerably faster than my previous Toshiba, a lot lighter, and the battery life was almost double. After a month of owning it I discovered that the microphone did not work with Skype or Google Chat. I guessed this problem was around since I bought the laptop. I was still in school at the time so I waited until summer to get it fixed. In July I contacted customer support via online chat help. After over an hour of diagnosis it was determined that my laptop motherboard was defective and I needed to send it in. This is what I had been afraid of, but since it was summer I could be without the laptop for a couple weeks to get it fixed.

Dell sent the package very quickly and then called me every step to let me know what was happening. A little too much in my opinion but it was good to know it would be done quickly. I then received the laptop back from Dell. I turned it on and first tested the microphone and it worked, problem solved. Not too fast, I was reloading my files that I had backed up and noticed that on 'Computer' window that my laptop said it only had 4GB of RAM. As in the description it came with 6GB of RAM when it was new. I opened up the back panel and saw that there was a 4GB RAM stick in the slot. I then popped out the keyboard to check the other slot and found out there was no RAM in RAM slot. I was hoping that it was something I could fix, but I was not so lucky. I called Dell again and told them my problem, it was pretty obvious and customer support said they would send the 2GB RAM stick.

I received the RAM within the next week, opened the keyboard again and put in the recently sent RAM. I then go to turn on the computer and it starts beeping at me (repetitive 3 beeps). I took out both RAM units and tried the new RAM unit in the slop on the back of the laptop, everything worked and computer booted up. Then tried the 4GB RAM in the keyboard slot, didn't workbeeps again. Time to call Dell again. I told them my problem and after a lengthy conversation they said they would fix the problem after I would send it in. Frustrated that they didn't fix it and annoyed that I wouldn't be able to use it for a more time, my only option was to send it in. I sent it in late-August. While the laptop was out for repairs I see a deal at Dell online that with a promo code the 14z laptop costs $500 with a $75 gift card to Dell. Which BEFORE the gift card, is $80 less than I had paid in April. And I had only used it for half of the available time due to issues.

Dell replaced the motherboard again and after a hold for parts I received it back mid-September. Finally, and just before school starts again my laptop is here and ready to go. Within 12 hours I discover yet another problem. The sound is not working either from speaker or headphone jack. I called them again. After running a couple of tests they confirmed that the speakers did not work. They wanted me to send in the laptop again. I really didn't want to, school was starting and it seems this fixing process has not worked before. I let the technician and his manager know my disgust asked for a new laptop because fixing it did not work the past 2 times. After a while of back and forth they couldn't do that. I then asked for the difference in cost since I was not able to use it for the entire summer. But it ended in that they can't and all they can do is service it in warranty. This fix will have the 4th motherboard installed for this laptop, not so random. It is so frustrating. Dell is completely wasting my time and can not fix a problem. I also asked them how they can be sure it is fixed completely but all I got was the same-as-always `we will run tests'-which have not worked in the past. What if the problem is not fixed? I will just be going through this song and dance again.

I would stay as far away from Dell as you can. This is an unacceptable product and service. I know problems occur but at such a large company, they should have ways to check that products are fixed correctly. I have been with out a laptop for 3 months at the moment and it's just going to get longer. School is starting and I will be without my laptop. A complete waste of time and money.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron 14" Laptop (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 2450M Processor, 6

I bought this laptop for my wife to use for her daily use such as email and watching videos. Let's just say that for the price, it can't be beat. It comes with Windows 7 Home, a Core i5-2450M and 6 GB of RAM. I felt that it was just the right size at 14" ... not too big and not too small. It also still has a DVD/CD drive.

When I was researching laptops, I was on the fence of getting a laptop with an i3 processor or an i5 processor. I had to pay a little more, but I felt that it would still be a pretty decent laptop a few years for now.

The i3 processor is only a dual core, while the i5 is a quad core. Also it comes with 6 GB of RAM -most laptops only come with 4 GB in this price range. I haven't tried it for gaming yet, but when I get a chance, I'll try installing Diablo 3 and revise my review. I have no doubt that this laptop should be able to handle it. Maybe not at the best settings, but good enough to play without any issues.

Initial setup was like any laptop. A few registration prompts, but nothing major. If you've owned a laptop before, setting this up should be simple enough.

Somethings that I found annoying is the default Dell application that handles your media and movies. I had to manually set it so that it doesn't open up. I'll try to post pics later. Also I hate the fact that it has covers on the USB ports because it doesn't really open up all the way and it ruins the convenience factor.

Overall I feel that this is a little power house with great features that should last for awhile before I think about upgrading.

5/28/12 UPDATE

I installed Diablo 3 and it runs fine with the default settings minus the anti aliasing. It did have that display driver out of date message after I installed it, but ran it with the default hardware and it's ok. No problems. CPU usage around 10% and physical memory about 36% if that helps out.

I just noticed that the battery angles the laptop a little more than usual so it allows better airflow and keeps it cooler on the table. This really helps out because I noticed the fan blowing harder when playing Diablo 3.

This is the worst computer I have ever used. The hard drive failed within the first month, and I had to get it replaced. The track pad is of horrific quality, and the computer struggles with basics like connecting to the internet. The absolute worst computer I have EVER used. Don't know how Dell gets away selling these things. Will NEVER buy a Dell again. Avoid at ALL costs. 500 dollars down the drain.

My previous laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 was 4.5 yrs old so it was time for a new puter. I know that there are a lot of Dell haters out there but I had a better experience with Dell than I had with Apple, Sony (piece of junk, HATE!) and Toshiba so I wanted another Dell.

Well, it's been 4 yrs since I last bought a computer so there are changes. I dont like this Nero software that comes with the puter but you can always uninstall. My biggest complaint is that the same as previous reviewers: mainly that the touchpad buttons are really stiff and unresponsive. So much so that I would have gone with a different model if i had tried it at a store. Definitely doesnt feel like my previous Dell laptop.

I use my laptop everyday for surfing, youtubing, ebaying, and photoshopping. I knew that the specs were more than enough for my needs since my previous Dell with Duo Core processor, 3GB handled my needs just fine. So, I dont really see a difference in speed considering what I am doing with it. Sleeping and waking are normal.

The colour Expresso Black should just be called Expresso. It's definitely not black; it's ebony with a hint of red in it.

Got this as a gift for my niece. She was really into the "Beats by Dre" and really wanted this laptop. The laptop is all black with the keypad lighting up making the buttons light up. It looks like a really cool laptop. As soon as we turned it on, the mouse pad worked....and then it stopped working. We contacted Adorama for an exchange because it seemed defective and were told to send it in to HP. The laptop stopped working the day we opened the box and thought that they were going to assist us well with the problem, but instead provided no customer service. Paying almost a $1000 for a laptop and getting no customer service told us to never purchase another item from Adorama ever again. I'm not sure if this a common problem with this model or if we just happened to receive a defective item, but we are very disappointed.

This is a beautiful machine. Check it out -4.2 lbs, 1" thick, Magnesium case, 7200 rpm HDD, spectacular HD display, 4 GB memory, 320 GB Hard Drive, Iconic keyboard Windows 7, 4 USB ports, HDMI port, great WiFi,etc. etc. All for under $600! It's astonishing. One begins to wonder what truck they steal these off of. Yes, my title is correct, "Macbook Killer." Look at the two machines side by side -they are pretty much the same thing. Yes, the Macbook Pro has a backlit keyboard, ok. But the DM3 has an HDMI port, which means I can attach it to my HDTV and play Neflix or Itunes movies, or youtube, etc. in High Definition. Sure, it has no optical drive, but folks, cd's and dvd's are becoming old technology, and being replaced by thumb/jump drives. Even software will be coming on these. Actually, the DM3 weighs almsot a pound less than a Macbook by eliminating the optical drive, and the advantages of using an external drive are many. Keyboards are almost identical, case is a toss up, display's are similar, windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard has its plusses and minuses going both ways. Yes, the Macbook is more powerful for high intensity graphics, but if you are using your computer as most people do, you will not notice the difference. But the knockout comes at checkout: It is less than 1/2 the price of a similarly configured 13" Macbook Pro!

It is so far superior to any netbook that there is no comparison there. Yes, it's not perfect. It does re-charge slowly, and the trackpad takes some getting used to. But it has so many fantastic features, when you factor in the price, it is the best value out there in ultraportable computing.

I have been using portable computers since the mid-eighties when they were 25 pounds with tiny monochrome screens floppy drives and cost $3000. Now for under $600, they are 1/6th the weight, yet 100 times as fast with 3000 times the storage and much more functionality. Think about how amazing this is! You will love this little machine.

This laptop is a winner! I'd rather have a fully functioning laptop than a Netbook that can't keep up. I've had it for a week and don't regret buying it.

Pros:

HDMI works well for watching Hulu on my HDTV.

Brushed metal case means fingerprints aren't a problem.

Quiet fan and hard-drive.

Wi-Fi is easy to set up (Windows 7 is rock solid).

Light-weight and easy to carry or stick into a travel bag.

13.3 screen size is a happy medium between a Netbook and a Laptop.

Keyboard is easy to use.

4 Gig of RAM is snappy.

13.3 screen size is a happy medium between a Netbook and a Laptop.

Cons:

Battery slowly drains if not plugged in.

Mouse pad wants to start Sticky Keys at times. Fixed by disabling Sticky Keys. Occasionally the mouse pad is briefly unresponsive.

Notes:

Although the battery lost 10% of its charge in 30 minutes while surfing the Web in normal mode, it recharged to 100% very quickly.

A CD drive would sap energy, which is why it's not included (you can buy an external one if you need it).

Overall, this is a great buy for the price. I really enjoy using it.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion DM3-1030US 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of

I've only had this machine for a couple days but it's very nice so far.

Pros: sleek, widows 7, plenty powerful, lots of ram and drive space, battery life, graphics card is decent, weight

Cons: power plug sticks out pretty far when plugged in, but not a big deal. Updated the track pad driver after one freeze and it hasn't locked up again since. No gigabit lan. Memory card reader won't read MS Duo without an adapter, not a deal breaker. Small up/down arrows, again not a killer, I'm already used to it. Track pad is a little sticky.

The biggest problem I've had so far isn't a ding against this computer, it's a windows 7 issue. Games for Windows Live wouldn't update, couldn't uninstall, couldn't reinstall. Finally got it working, but don't ask me to repeat the process.

I saw a guy on the interwebs frantically searching about how to change the DM3 Function Keys back to the standard F1, F2, F3 etc. It's in the bios. Hit Esc during startup, then F10 to enter the bios, configure from there, it's on the third tab or thereabouts. I may keep them as the media keys, don't know yet.

Games: Runs Halo 1 very well, runs Team Fortress 2 pretty decently, Dawn of War II is playable with everything turned way down. So that's a pass for the graphics and processor as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite thing about windows 7: You can select a group of files, right click and change their meta data! So awesome! Updating mp3 tags is a breeze!

I didn't want a desktop replacement, I wanted a laptop replacement and this fits the bill. I'm coming from an old Sony PCG-SRX99 so I'm used to not having an optical drive. Windows 7 lets you mount one on the network anyway.

Very good overall. I'll update if anything changes.

EDIT 11/29/2009

The touchpad is still unresponsive after coming out of sleep. It's turning into a major issue. Hopefully a firmware update comes out.

EDIT 12/14/2009

Now I have a bad pixel, right in the middle of the screen. Always on green. I've knocked down the rating to 3 stars, and thinking about sending it back.

Construction

The notebook is compact and light which makes this highly portable for traveling. This is a compact device that fits nicely on my lap or an airplane tray table. The screen is a glossy 13.3" Widescreen and reflects glare in areas of bright light. There is no wrist pad flex but quite a bit of screen flex. The lid is a brushed Magnesium alloy that easy to wipe clean. The integrated camera is positioned above the screen.

The keyboard layout is well positioned and intuitive. No dedicated keys are present, except for the power switch and WiFi Radio button. Function key allows control of volume, brightness, sleep, lock, fast forward, reverse and play. The function key allows you to use the keys as a numeric keypad.

The touchpad is metallic in color and uses gestures to scroll, zoom and rotate. The mouse buttons take a touch too much pressure to depress and there is no integrated mouse stick, like you see on IBMs or other business machines.

Indicator lights in the front right edge are present for charging status and when the hard drive is being accessed.

This laptop is very quiet and I barely hear the fan. The bottom of the notebook (right where the Windows License sticker is located) is warm but not hot/uncomfortable.

In addition to WiFi, this has Bluetooth capability.

The left side of this notebook has the power Jack, network port, HDMI, 2 USB ports, headphone and microphone jacks. A card reader accepts SD, Memory stick pro, Multimedia cards and XD Cards. The right side of the notebook has lighted power buttons for the WiFi radio and Power for the notebook. 2 additional USB ports and a port for a laptop lock are also present.

This laptop is supplied with Windows 7. There is an MS Office 60 Day Trial and a trial of Norton Internet Security.

Operation

Use of this notebook, given the size and very good battery life make this a practical company for someone always on the go. The keyboard is comfortable and the features make this a great multimedia machine for traveler.

Screen quality is good but a touch too dim for my personal preference. The maximum screen resolution us 1366x768.

Sound quality is average but not powerful. Speakers are in the front edge of the notebook made by Altec Lansing. Dynamic range is limited and has high and midrange frequencies with a weak base.

Battery life in real time applications (WiFi, Bluetooth off, screen brightness on high, and running the Internet is about 4.5 to 5 hours. Only with Bluetooth and WiFi off, and screen brightness to 75%, Power Saver mode, can you approach the 6 hour mark. High Performance mode cuts battery life by about 20%.

Cons

Given the size, cost and capabilities, this notebook rivals the larger laptops for its more than capable processing power and rivals netbooks for the size and price point. This laptop is worthy of consideration!

I bought this item to replace a three year old 14 inch eMachines laptop that I spilled coffee on (yeah yeah I know). I looked at netbooks for a while because I liked the portability and lower price but realized that for $100-$150 more I could get this nice 13 inch laptop which fell right where I was looking to be. Netbooks are restricted with processor speed, ram, size (if you're looking for something slightly larger) and functionality (you can only get it with Windows Starter Edition).

So when compared to a typical laptop, is this a great machine? Well that depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a small laptop with very reasonable performance all around that won't break the bank, then yes this is a great machine. On sale this unit can be found for around $500-$550 right now (if you are patient and keep an eye on prices) making it a steal in my book. I won't go into all the details since the other reviews pretty much addresses them all but here are a few others and thoughts:

Yes the track-pad is awful. It is fairly slow even with the settings set as fast as they can go. The clicking of the mouse button requires a "click" which I personally like over ones that seem to click every time I brush up against it but once again this may frustrate some people. I use a mouse 90% of the time so the track-pad hasn't been a deterring factor (although it does leave crazy amounts of fingerprints).

The keyboard is great if you ask me but if you use many shortcuts like some people tend to do, you'll find having to use the function key a bit of a hassle. I've read in another review that for example the F keys can be programmed in the bios to be just that without the use of the function key, so that may be an option worth changing for some. I am a bit surprised though that the keyboard does tend to imprint fingerprints too, but once again not a deal-breaker.

The fan is not very loud (at least not mine although I read a couple people complain about it) but I found the bottom of the computer does tend to get a bit hot and sometimes the top where you rest on the keyboard. This isn't unlike many computers and this thing is very slim yet fairly powerful so I suppose it's to be expected. If you're the type that feels any heat is bad, then you may want to look elsewhere.

The lack of a CD drive is worth noting. Through the use of things like Nero to burn images of programs you only have on CD, Daemon Tools to read them, and Bit Torrent to get programs in digital form this is fairly easy to deal with but if you have limited knowledge of computers you may find that just installing your old version of MS Office that is on CD will be a challenge. On a netbook the lack of a CD drive wouldn't even be worth mentioning but because this unit falls under the laptop category in every way then it's worth noting as a negative.

Lastly, the battery life while I haven't extensively tested seems to be a bit poorer than I thought it would be. I however don't give it much of a chance since I always have the brightness as high as it goes, wireless on, etc etc. Using the item in lo-fi to gain some extra battery life isn't worth it to me but should I be without the accessibility of an outlet it's good to know that I can get by when changing the settings.

So if you can get over these setbacks (like I have) and can get this laptop for the $500-$550 range, then I highly recommend it. If paying more, then the ASUS UL30A should seriously be considered. It's got very similar specs except double the battery life plus some of the cons of this laptop such as the track-pad and such seems to not be present with the ASUS. Choosing between the two basically boiled down to price for me and I've been very happy so far. As far as choosing between a small laptop like this or a netbook, all I can say is that current netbooks don't have the processor speed, included and expandable ram, and video playback capabilities that this laptop has. I can run multiple programs, including my accounting software, along with antivirus software, all at once without it skipping a beat.
