Let me start by saying there are some drawbacks to this computer: No bluetooth, no blueray, i5 and not i7, and I don't love the touchpad, but...

There are some great features that I love on this laptop.

The multimedia functionality is quite good. The processing speeds for multiple high-demand applications running simultaneously are good. The keyboard is very comfortable and responsive which is huge for me because I type on it a lot. It has a great port configuration with HDMI and 2 of the 3 USBs under an easily accessible protective cover on the left, and 1 USB on the right very efficient for multiple devices. There is very little preloaded "factory" software to remove after purchase, in fact some of the samsung applications are quite handy (the backup for instance).

The aesthetics of this machine are great, it was half the price of the Macbook Pro with the same processing capabilities, it has the seperate dedicated video processing chip which is essential I think, and the battery life is double a comparable Sony or Toshiba (about 6.25 hours per charge -with an additional 3/4 of an hour after powering back on after first shut down).

One thing no one has mentioned is the overall thoughtful engineering. Not only is it very solid and comfortable, but there are a lot of little things that are well thought out. For instance the palm rest is slightly elevated above the keyboard so that when it closes the screen does not contact the keys. Seems like a small feature, but I enjoy watching my friend constantly cleaning finger oils off the screen of his $2,200 MacBook Pro. You can also charge USB devices from the laptop while not running, and the auto save features allow for great convenience (just shut the lid mid sentence and come back whenever to the exact same configuration you had going. This is very useful for me because I utilize multiple research programs and resources simultaneously while writing, and love being able to just slap the thing shut and resume at my convenience when others need my attention).

The portability, durability, screen resolution/quality, processing power (again the dual video processing is invaluable if you want to keep this thing for 5+ years like I intend to), and beauty of this computer combine to make it a very wonderful machine at a very economic price point.

This is a very sleek, stylish and well thought out computer that performs extremely well.

I am glad I trusted the Samsung name even though they are relatively new to the laptop space.

I have no idea if the 430 is of the same caliber as this 410 so I would recommend the 410. It's probably worth the extra $150!

I won't lie what first drew me to this laptop was its look. It is the essence of cool borrowing all the best parts from a host of other laptops and putting them together into the ultimate package. Ultra thin, light, and edge-to-edge glass = drool. But looks fade, right?

Well, so far, the QX410's brains match its looks. This laptop is fast and powerful. I've been editing HD video on here as well as mixing multiple tracks of audio. I have yet to make it slow down or stutter.

Last but not least, the battery. I routinely get 5-6 hours out of the battery and am very happy with that performance.

If someone forced me to say something negative I'd say that I wish the screen resolution were a bit higher it would help when I have an editing program open and a bunch of tool windows. Most times, this doesn't affect me.

Buy this laptop, you won't regret it.

I've had the QX410 about 3 weeks now. I really like it.

Pros:

Nice feel, nice keyboard action. Stiff hinge. Looks pretty, feels solid.

Built-in drive partitioning

Nice start-up and shut-down speed

Great battery life 5 to 6+ hours per charge

Very nice display love the edge-to-edge glass, brighter and easier to clean than standard LCD

Cons:

A lot heavier than it looks

The i5 processor is so-so for multimedia work better than most in its class, but bogs down a lot faster than the Lenovo Thinkpad R400 I use for work.

Hate the keyboard layout if you're an IBM person, you're going to screw up your screen dimensions whenever you reach for your control key. Yes, you adjust eventually, but it's frustrating.

Also don't much like the mouse buttons integrated into the mouse pad. I keep relocating the cursor with my sleeves. But again, you adjust eventually. It's not a big deal.

Overall, it looks and feels great. Good strong wireless, nice port set up (3 USBs and a HDMI) for a slimline, really good battery life even on full-light display. Great value for the money, and I'm happy with it. It'll handle 2-3 high-load operations at a time. But if you're looking for serious multimedia processing power, this may not be the one for you.

Honest reviews on Samsung QX410-J01 14in Notebook Aluminum

In order to provide an extensive review, I would have to wait some more time for such a review. However, my first impressions can (hopefully) suffice for now.

I purchased this laptop from Woot! back on May 21st and eagerly awaited its arrival, which occurred on June 1st. I've had it for about a week now, have toyed with it, and so far it is wonderful. I could rave and go on about the great things about it, but I will only give a few cons for right now.

As per the most helpful critical review, I've had no touchpad problems of that sort. However, I have noticed that at times the touchpad doesn't register the click immediately after typing, even with the Palm Guard option turned off. This is hardly a nuisance, however, since I use a wireless mouse most of the time.

The hard drive is 5400 rpm, so those who are used to 7200 rpm hard drives may notice some degradation in terms of performance or file transfers, but whether this is troublesome or not depends on the end user. In my case, it makes no difference.

The screen is a bit iffy. While the edge-to-edge glass is pretty nice, it is extremely reflective, which can be a nuisance on lower brightness settings. But hey, you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting your screen and having it damage the pixels inside. Also, the 14" screen is nice, but considering the extra space around the edges to match the width of the laptop, Samsung could have fit in a 15" screen just as easily.

The battery may be a problem in the future. It is not user-replaceable, so anyone who likes to remove it when not in use cannot do so. Since it lasts 1000 cycles, this may not immediately be a problem, so we will have to see once the first owners of this machine have held out for its lifetime (since it was released in Q4 2010, we have a while to wait).

The GPU is not very powerful, but it is a vast improvement over an integrated card, which this machine also comes paired with, allowing for extended battery life when not using visually intensive programs. I play Minecraft regularly, and the dedicated card is more than enough to run it super smoothly, surprisingly better than my other machine with a much more powerful GPU.

One thing to note, though, about the RAM in this machine is that 210 Mb of its 4 Gb are reserved for video memory for the integrated GPU, so only 3.79 of its 4 Gb of RAM are accessible. However, considering how well this machine performs, I have never run into any problems with this.

As a final thought, the pros FAR outweigh the cons, which are few and minor. The laptop in its entirety is GORGEOUS. Very high quality, solid build, light enough to carry around with you, very thin, and -my favorite part -very long-lasting. The claim for the battery in this machine is 7 hours. Well, I've clocked it in at 8:23 before, so I'm one happy camper. :)

The mouse on this laptop is VERY annoying! First it sticks, and then it runs around on it's own like crazy! There's a setting to change the 8 different things the mouse does. That's the problem...this mouse thinks it knows too much and doesn't want to always do what what you tell it to do. Other than that this is a REALLY nice laptop. Hope it helps to prevent someone for getting highly frustrated with the mouse.

So I decided I would do a review on here even though I didn't purchase this product from Amazon.

Overall, this is a strong machine with low price. 4 Gigs of RAM is a huge plus. CPU is not bad with 1.8 GHz Pentium 2117U (2 cores. Beside that, 500Gb storage is great for music and video in normally.

About the battery, the advertiser told 4 hours. I never used one program or just start the laptop to check it, the actual battery of my laptop is over 3 hours. I think, it depends on the way you use the laptop. About the windows 8, windows 8 was designed for touching, but this laptop is untouchable. If you want to experient on touching laptop, you can see this laptop

This machine is not include windows 8 VCD, so you have to care full if you want to restore the system. In short, this laptop worth money.

This computer is great from a hardware point of view. It is light, fast, and feels like it's made of high quality materials. The problem is Windows 8. It is designed to work well with tablets. It makes no sense for a laptop application without a touchscreen. You need to drag too much, which is super awkward with a mouse. If you can get this laptop with Vista or Windows 7, it's a buy. If you can't, buy a computer with a touchscreen.

A great all-around machine at a budget price. Doesn't feel like a budget machine. Pros:

Plenty fast 2 Ghz core duo, 2 GB RAM

Intel graphics chipset (GMA 4500) which is 2x the speed of earlier laptop video chips from Intel, DirectX10, 720p native snappy with Vista Aero

nice keyboard, good crisp key action, well laid out

glorious screen, bright (even under battery power) and super crisp

very useful multimedia controls: stop/start/FF work with Media player & DVDs, front edge volume, headphone & mic ports

front edge switch for wifi (on/off)

Cons:

screen resolution tops at 1280x800

HDD only 160 GB (140 GB usable)

won't play games well at max res not a portable gaming computer

battery life only a couple hours (keeping that screen lit up uses a lot of power)

If you are like me and use an external drive to sync your tunes to a MP3 player, then the HDD should be plenty large. If you demand your tunes with you, it may not be enough. Same if you need hardcore gaming in your laptop.

I fired up Audacity and did some recording, it handled it flawlessly. I'll be doing a lot of recording on this machine. DVDs are smooth, and Vista responds very well on this machine. USed Zune SW to play music & show a slideshow & did some surfing handled it just fine.

I bought this laptop from they had it for free shipping, could not refuse the bait, I bought an additional 4gb of kingston hyperx 800mhz ddr2, this makes a difference. I got a windows Vista rating of 3.5. The only cons for this laptop would be no bluetooth and webcam. This laptop is not for serious gamers. Windows Vista takes some getting use to, this is a first Vista laptop. I still prefer xp, lol.

Best Deals for Satellite L305-S5921 T3400

The bad:

Short battery life about two hours if running it so I don't get eye strain.

Slow. Slower than my four-year-old budget laptop that just died. May be Norton slowing it all down.

The good:

Cheap.

Seems solid.

Everything's working fine.

The shipper did not include a recovery CD as promised in the description. The hard drive, and RAM are powerful, but the computer's cursor is jumpy and difficult to control (this was a refurbished model). The area on the laptop that affects the cursor is probably dirty. Also, I wonder why the fan doesn't work, or is it not supposed to have one. I'll have to look that up. I was concerned about giving feedback, because I don't like to offend. Before buying anything from this seller, I would make a copy of the description, make him document everything in emails before purchase.

The 13.3" screen laptop weighing less than 5 lbs. are the ideal dimensions for a business laptop. A few years ago, there were a number of business and consumer laptops with these dimensions selling for $500-700. However, with Apple's success with the MacBook Pros, other PC manufacturers started copying Apple with higher priced ultrabooks. Now, it is practically impossible to find a 13.3" notebook that costs less than $1,000. This leaves the folks pinching pennies with the less than ideal 14" notebooks.

I have owned this laptop for a few days and I have listed some of my observations. I will update this review if I find any glaring deficiencies.

With stock parts, the machine scored 2,200 on the PC Mark 7 and a 5.0 on the Windows Experience Index (WEI). The graphics performance on Windows Aero was the lagging metric on WEI at 5.0.

Pros:

1. Intel i5-3210M Processor – It might be the slowest i5 processor in the market right now but it's still good. It should run most office applications with aplomb.

2. Size and weight – The size and weight of this laptop is just right (almost). It has a 14" screen that has a maximum screen resolution of 1366x768 (720p). It weighs 4.7 lbs so you can carry it or lug it along your bag without too much effort.

3. Expandability – It has a PCI Express Mini Card free. This gives the users the option of adding an mSATA drive to improve the laptop's performance. After adding a Plextor 64GB mSATA SSD, the scores jumped to 3,700 on the PC Mark 7. The main WEI score stayed the same at 5.0 but the Hard Disk score was significantly improved at 7.8 from 5.9. Users can also expand the memory to 16GB (according to the Lenovo software) and the hard disk. For some reason, Lenovo only offers the 1TB drives at 5,400 rpm. I believe it was a technical decision to keep the laptop cool.

4. Price – It may be last year's model, but the performance and value are really at a sweet spot. You will be hard pressed to find another laptop with the same price/performance at less than $600.

5. Good documentation – Lenovo provides a Hardware Maintenance guide to help users upgrade their laptop. It is a pretty comprehensive guide that even shows users how to replace the LCD and motherboard.

Cons:

1. Ctrl and Fn keys are switched – This is not a big deal though since you can switch the keys in the BIOS.

2. Some LED indicators are missing – For some reason the hardware engineers at Lenovo decided to ditch some of the indicator lights. There are no indicator lights for Caps Lock, wifi and the Hard Disk. In fact, the only lights that you will see are the small red lights indicating power on and a small green light on the right side indicating battery charging.

3. Relatively low memory and Hard Disk space This is also not a big deal because of the low price and good documentation. Instead of configuring the laptop on the Lenovo website, you can just buy a prepackaged one and upgrade it at a lower cost. Upgrading this laptop on your own should take a few hours at most.

4. No Windows 7 media – Users need to make a copy of the Windows 7 recovery disks on DVD or a thumb drive. In addition, there's a lot of documentation on the web showing how to write your own Windows 7 copy on DVD or USB. Lenovo provides recovery disks for Windows 8.

I upgraded the memory to 8GB with Kingston HyperX sticks and the Hard Disk to 1 TB with a Toshiba hard disk. The final benchmarks with all the modifications are 4,300+ on PC Mark 7 and 6.5 on the Windows Experience Index. The 30% increase in Windows Aero performance indicates that the stock 4GB in memory may be too low and was affecting graphics performance. Overall, I find this laptop to be a solid value buy. It is a 4-star laptop at stock but a potential 5-star machine with the right upgrades.

I have used Lenovo Think Pads for years. They are built very solid, and this one is not an exception from that standpoint. I like the cursor control peg, a primary reason I bought this Lenovo. Also, it has a lot of other features that wanted, eg HDMI. The only thing that is disappointing is that the display is not as crisp as the past Lenovo's I have had. It's like the contrast needs to be adjusted, If you plan to use that display a lot, I personally would take a pass on this laptop.

Junk is the best description. I bought the Acer Aspire 5750 series. Worked well for first 90 days. On day 91 it decided to not stay connected to the internet. I use wireless. I did the chat with the tech and after many tries at a fix. They had me send it back. Well, the tech in Texas did nothing. Said it worked and sent it back. I have had it back a little over a month and now it does the same thing. So, here I go again with the chat person...doing the same thing over again and expecting different results. Ha! Now they want me to talk to a level 2 tech on chat but I have to do that during business hours and this is Saturday. I asked if I could ship the bloody lemon back and no I got to talk to the level 2 tech. I have another laptop a Samsung. sweet and it works but my husband uses it for his business. So, just bought a Dell Inspirion. Our old Inspirion...really ancient still works but is too slow and can't be upgraded. So my recommendation buy a Dell or a Samsung. Do not buy the insanity of an Acer. I still have the manufacturers warranty and actually bought a 2 year extended warranty. I imagine the Acer will most likely not make it through the warranty periods and will die probably before the year is out at the rate it is going.

I bought this laptop at Best Buy for around the same price that it is available Amazon. It works perfectly for many things. i personally manage music, play music, browse the web constantly, watch HD YouTube videos, etc. I even game on this laptop! It has no problem running Minecraft and runs L4D2 exceptionally well. Windows 8 is a beast of its own and I feel that it should have its own review. Anyone who docks stars off of this laptop because of Windows 8 isn't seeing what a great laptop it is. Luckily, I really like and enjoy Windows 8! Make sure that you do enough research on Windows 8 and see if you don't mind the new features and looks. It honestly is not as big of a learning curve as everyone puts it out to be. the one and only thing that I can say that is bad about this laptop though is the battery life. It will last you about 2-3 hrs on average. i usually use balanced system performance and those are the hrs i get from that. If you use battery saver you will probably get an extra 30 mins or so. So if you're a person who is going to take their laptop everywhere I would take the battery life into consideration. Maybe even purchasing another one would be good too. Ultimately, I would highly recommend this computer to someone who wants to get a nice, low costing laptop.

My mom bought me this laptop for graduation, I've been using it for 3months now and I love it. I hated it at first because I hate windows 8. I think it's very inefficient, however this was my first intro to the program and this laptop does not have touch screen which would probably make windows 8 a better experience. All in all, This laptop has grown on me. I just avoid the windows 8 aspect of it, I navigate via the desktop screen.

It also has a multi-touch cursor pad which I LOVE!

Keyboard is tricky at times but will tell everyone to dump the W8 and go with extra 4GB RAM and a 7200RPM HD. Yes now as fast as a 965 Quad Core but here is the thingwired NIC MUCH faster and wireless went from 70MB/s to nearly 88MB's a sec using Windows 7. This was bought for work and could have went Intel but this one had 3 USB ports (again all faster under W7) instead of two. Upgrade the RAM, HD and install W7 or your flavor of Linux and you will have a decent work laptop on the cheap.

I bought a refurbished one of these back in 2010. Everyone complains about HP computers, but I never had an issue with mine. The battery holds less charge than it did when I first got it, which is completely understandable since it's over 2 years old, but even that is not much of an issue since I am using the regular battery and not an extended life one. When I got it, I immediately upgraded from Vista to 7 because of my own preference and for a while the drivers that support the pen and touch features were not fully funtional (the pen feature worked, but the touch display didn't). Early last year, they released the updated drivers so now it is fully functional. The laptop does get kinda hot at times, that is true. Apparently, this is something that all of the HP computers made in similar build to this one do. Really, if you just sit it on a flat surface (like a table) and make sure there are no obstructions near the vents, the latop runs quite smoothly and the heat shouldn't be much of an issue then.

A neat feature about this computer is that it is Wacom Penabled and comes with Wacom drivers installed on it. For an artist, like myself, this is very handy as this feature is can utilize the pressure sensitivity of the screen. The 3 gigs of RAM already on the computer work pretty well, but I will be adding another gig to max it out for the artistic programs I use that really consume RAM, like Photoshop or Autodesk Maya. It actually runs fine with the 3 gigs though. It also comes with a little remote control that works with the media content.

Sometimes the fan gets kinda loud, but that seems to happen only when the computer is using a lot of memory. I do not recommend leaving disks in the computer when it is just starting up as it sometimes gives problems at startup. The battery does stick out the back and it is kind of annoying, but that's not really a funtionality issue as it is more of an aestetic issue. The only crappy thing I find is that it is not very easy to find a relatively cheap laptop case that fits it, since it is bigger than a netbook and smaller than most normal laptops but again, that is not a funtionality issue.

Overall, I am very pleased with this computer. It works for everything I need it for.

This is a great computer i brought mine back in 09 or something like that, and it still works like a champ. The screen, the sound quality, the durability, and the four usb drives makes this a great computer.

One down fall is the mouse pad, i get very upset when my palm hits the pad and the computer registers that as me wanting to fire, or attack. other than that this is a good buy, a fair price for this computer as is would be 200-420. there is a refurbished one for sale, that might be an upgraded version, but if not i would not recommend it.

This is a real sleeper considering the AMD Radeon HD 7670M Graphics Card is about 65% MORE POWERFUL than the Intel Core i7-2670QM HD Video card and slightly faster than the GeForce GT 630M which is what counts in most games. CPU is not nearly as powerful as Core i7 BUT you don't need it that strong when the Video is so good and this is ONLY a 1360x768 Display.

Higher resolutions may slow down and Intel Core i7-2670QM is WAY OVERPOWERED for most users unless your building 3D CAD Submarines At Electric Boat!

For all the money you save its the best combination in almost Every Application unless you do Rendering Professionally. Photoshop, Most Games, Video possibly with the CPU working Hard but not Overworked.

Overall a great no frills performer especially considering the price.

For more resolution consider the 17" 1600x900 Acer Aspire AS7750G-6645 using the Intel Core i5-2450M CPU which is more powerful and your still UNDER $600 for a good machine using the AMD Radeon HD 7670M Graphics Card.

I'm very happy with this purchase, this is a perfect fit for those who want to play games and some multi-tasking. The graphics are great, with medium to high settings. I also use it for some Photoshop and other picture editing programs, and it runs them very smoothly. The keyboard is great as well, also has a number pad beside it, that's a plus for me. Battery life is good, even though I have plugged in all the time. Overall, a great laptop for those who are looking for a little bit of gaming and multi-tasking.

This is my second Toshiba laptop. Number one is around 4 years old and still works well.

This review is more about the A355 chassis, than this exact spec laptop, and should apply to just about every one of the laptops in this series whether they run AMD or Intel chips.

The first view is that the materials are just plain flat out gorgeous. From the shiny exterior, to the semi rounded base, the two large chrome mouse buttons, the nicely integrated Harmon Kardon speakers, the illuminated touch areas, the big beautiful monitor, and those shiny keys. Yes this is one very pretty computer.

Under that pretty hood are some interesting specs. It used to be incredibly rare to see an eSATA port on any computer, let alone a laptop. Well this one has exactly that an eSATA port that doubles as a USB port. Nice option to hook up external hard drives. It also includes an iLink, Firewire, or IEEE-1394 port an incredible rarity (even Apple dropped this port). The audio ports and volume control are on the front, nicely placed. There's absolutely no ports on the rear. There's also an express card slot (not a PCMCIA slot, but EXPRESS card slot) and a multi flash memory card reader (they've dropped CF from the list). It does not include Bluetooth a very strange omission since every single bluetooth adapter uses the Toshiba stack to run. Use either of these adapters, they work perfectly: IOGear GBU421 Bluetooth 2.0 USB Micro Adapter or Cirago BTA3210 Class 2 Micro Bluetooth Adapter (Black Tip) both are outstanding miniscule adapters.

Toshiba stuffed 4Gb of RAM and a 320Gb hard drive into this big baby. Those are some pretty nice features in a laptop this inexpensive. Those Harmon Kardon speakers sound very nice.

You'll either hate this or love it, and fortunately you can turn this off if you hate it. The Toshiba name, a little band above the scratchy navigation pad, and the media buttons all light up white (pretty bright at that). I think it looks pretty cool, but others have hated all those lights.

The monitor, oh that monitor is gorgeous. Movies pop, they look absolutely fantastic on this computer. It's a nice big screen. Yes it is a gloss finish and you do get some reflections here or there, but generally it's not bad.

The keys are all glossy and the fanatical among you might not like all the visible fingerprints, but I think most will get over that quickly. There is just a ton of room to put your hands to type and use the computer. That surface in front is sweet for a palm rest.

Function-wise, this computer is a decent performer. Nobody is buying this to run heavy games or render video it won't do those things. But for the occasional game, the occasional video edit, you'll score well here.

Do note, this computer runs Windows Vista Premium 64-Bit. Please don't be afraid of that operating system. I'm running 64 bit on two computers and it runs just beautifully. There is almost no new hardware that won't run under 64 bit these days. It's a rock solid platform. And that OS allows all 4Gb of memory to be seen and used (32 bit tops out at 3Gb). And if you don't believe me, type this into google pcmag 64 bit computing. Read the first article in that hit list.

This is no lightweight computer. It's a big, pretty heavy laptop. Great for around the house. Not something you would travel everywhere with. But it is portable. Heat generation is nothing extreme. It does pull air in from below, so be careful about couches or beds plugging those holes.

It's a good solid fast computer. There's a bit of fan noise, nothing huge, but you will know the machine is running. I hate to comment on battery life, that's so dependent on how bright you make the screen, processor speed settings and the like. I got a good solid 2 hours of hitting it very hard at max everything. You could probably get a good 3 hours, maybe 4 at more conservative settings.

Something to keep in mind, Toshiba ships all their laptops full of bloat-ware. It's a really good idea to remove it all. Almost none of it is necessary. There are two websites that will clear all that garbage out of your computer. It's explained in a great article at PCMag. Type this into google, PCMag make the most out of your new pc. The first hit will be a fantatstic article on how to remove the garbage.

Overall, this is a big, beautiful, good sounding, heavy, hard working, well priced laptop.

June 2009 Update well my son managed to crack the screen. He has no idea how this happened, but it's certainly not Toshiba's fault. I will admit the top is somewhat flexible, but that's not how this broke. He probably fell asleep and rolled over on top of it and doesn't remember that. I am super happy I bought the 3 year no fault warranty. Just a word to the wise, displays in general have gotten more fragile. Use care or buy a warranty (just be sure it's backed by the right kind of company).

This Toshiba Satellite replaced a four-year-old Dell Inspiron. As a writer, I use my laptop every day and wanted a comfortable keyboard and touchpad. This Satellite delivers with a sturdy keyboard, enough space to rest your palms comfortably while typing and a textured touchpad.

The touchpad has touch scrolling on both the right side and bottom (handy for scrolling along large spreadsheets), so you don't have to hold down the left-click button to scroll--much easier on the hand. The touchpad scrolling settings are adjustable and can be removed.

The click buttons are large and placed so that your palms don't brush them while you type.

I also wanted a laptop with excellent video quality for watching DVDs and Play Now features from NetFlix. Videos are crisp and colorful on this 16-inch screen and it's easy to see from several angles (unlike my old LCD-screen where the screen had to be tilted just exactly right to avoid the black shadow effect).

If you like to watch movies in bed on the computer with your honey, this computer is great for that since both people can see the screen without black shadowing. The light-up DVD controls on the top of the keyboard are also a great feature for watching DVD's in bed.

The speakers are very good quality, with excellent range and can be turned up loud enough to enjoy music or watch a movie from another part of the room.

My most favorite feature of this computer is the volume control. Located on the front, next to the 5:1 memory card reader and headphone jack, is a small wheel that turns left and right, like the volume control on a radio.

It's so simple, it's brilliant! When you have music blasting and the phone rings with a call from a client, a quick flip of the dial and the sound is turned down or off. No more hunting on the keyboard for the Function Key + a picture of a muted speaker.

The Satellite has a built-in webcam that is easily activated with a click. The webcam controls appear whenever your mouse hovers near the left side of the screen.

Speaking of hovering controls, whenever you press the FN (Function) key, a large legend appears at the top of the screen with function controls, which is handy when you don't have your glasses.

All four USB ports are on the sides near the front, as is the network port. It is easier to plug and unplug components, but it's also easier to bump my USB drive when picking up something from my desk.

Did I mention that this computer is blazingly fast? Wow! Need to have five different programs running plus several web pages open? Not a problem for this zippy laptop.

I've been very happy with the Toshiba Satellite and would highly recommend it.

I spent way tooooo long researching and reading and thinking about which laptop to buy and then bought the Toshiba. I'm sure other choices would have worked for me as well, but I'm VERY happy with the Toshiba.

It looks good, which, while not a big factor, is a nice bonus. It's fast. I've used a number of other PC's running Vista and they've all been pretty slow, so I think the 4GB of memory is a big help. This laptop has built-in DVD control buttons in the housing above the keyboard and while I wouldn't have bought it because of this feature, it turns out to be REALLY easy to use and helpful!

I've been surprised at how much I like it! I've used products from Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Lenovo, Apple and Sony and this Toshiba is, so far, better for me than anything I've used before.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A355-S6940 16.0-Inch Laptop

Warranty limitations of Toshiba were created to avoid change or repair one laptop if it has few bad or damaged pixels (dead black pixels, always white or colored pixels...). I did not know this when I bought my laptop and I am thinking never more buying one by Internet (it is better see in the store if it has some damaged pixels)

I am an international customer. I bought this Toshiba from Amazon and I am out of US in this moment. I have used a lot of HP computers without problems and this was the first time I selected a computer of other brand. I did this because of the "Toshiba international warranty" [..]

But my computer has an UGLY white point in the screen. I bought it for photo and video processing and I am very disapointed. You can read a lot of information (other customers with the same problem) searching in google toshiba dead pixels. The computer performance is good (4.9 Vista score) but this problem with the screen caused my laptop to be a waste of money... BE CAREFULL BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER FEW DAMAGED PIXELS TO BE ACCEPTABLE!!!

I bought this machine a month ago because its hardware config looked good at a good price, I thought. I thought I can live with Vista, maybe upgrade to XP7 later this year. I rated it highly at Toshiba's web site and here at Amazon. Now, after a month's experience, I have buyer's regret.

Toshiba's pricing strategy of near-zero pre-loaded software (Vista only) means a lot of the cost of ownership is 'shifted forward' meaning you have to buy almost everything, including a bluetooth stack. This is an excellent example of nickel and diming customers to death -not a good marketing strategy.

This machine does NOT come with bluetooth support, you have to add a dongle. But I thought that like Windows XP SP2, Vista has the stack included. Sadly, no, it is not true. The situation gets worse. Toshiba does not use the 'standard' Windows stack but has a proprietary stack. If it detects a non-Toshiba dongle, the Toshiba OEM license expires. You have to uninstall the Toshiba stack and find/install a compatible stack. Sigh.

It gets worse. I was pretty unhappy that I was unable to install the official Microsoft Office Suite. After going a few layers deep in hardware configuration dialog boxes, I find that the CD-ROM driver is in error, it could not find a fix and, maybe this is a separate problem, the system cannot detect the drive!!!!! No driver download available from Toshiba's tech support web site. Talking to a live agent, she pointed me to a secure site where I was able to download a filter that seemingly fixed the problem. This is NOT the way a new PC should be. I have never encountered such a problem before, in 20-some years of using computers.

I now rate this PC only 2 stars because of the stupid Toshiba policy of NOT including a free to the end user, perpetual end user license to its bluetooth stack. The CD-ROM driver problem worsened my opinion. BTW, a third-party driver diagnostic program detected 26 out-of-date or erroneous drivers.

Toshiba's stupid marketing made two more bad mistakes:

1. The license to the stack is for the manufacturers of bluetooth dongles, not for end-users like me, so end-users are at a dead end. I suppose I could buy a new dongle that has a Toshiba license instead of using the dongle I already own.

2. End users who are not IT-savvy won't know what the hell this licensing esoterica means. There is no link from Toshiba's 'expired' message to ANY help for end users to solve this problem. On Toshiba's user forum, the question "How to buy a license..." is posted, but 'locked' so no one can post comments. There is NO ANSWER given, such as "buy xyz dongles because they have the necessary Toshiba license." That's a missed opportunity to co-market with OEMs that have bought a Toshiba license. I've searched the web and THERE IS NO ANSWER elsewhere.

Fortunately, I know that BlueSoleil, a vendor of bluetooth software, will support the dongle that I already have. After registration, I downloaded BlueSoleil 6, a stack that does all the things that the Toshiba stack does. And it doesn't seem to conflict with the Toshiba stack which I did not uninstall. Unfortunately, BlueSoleil is available for free for only a 15-day trial after which BlueSoleil will transfer files of up to 2 MB. The good marketing practice demonstrated by BlueSoleil is it gives you a link to its online store where you can buy a license for $29.99. They help you to solve the problem, not like Toshiba.

I am shocked and disappointed that Toshiba, a well regarded consumer electronics brand, does such a poor job of end-user marketing and support.

Oh, while I'm at it, let me warn you that Toshiba tech support, while free, is NOT AT ALL KNOWLEDGEABLE. F'instance, I called to say that I couldn't find the pre-loaded free trial of Microsoft Office. My call got dropped, no call-back. Had to go through the n-level deep voice messaging, call another number, again, to get to another random support person who suggested searching the hard drive for hidden sectors. The software was there. AND, after hassling the guy for a recovery disk, threatening to talk to his supervisor, he said he'd waive the rules and send me one. A month later, no disk arrived. Finally, a friend told me that that I don't need to buy Toshiba's recovery CD because the machine has a utility for you to create your own recovery CD. Sigh.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

It is now about 6 months after writing the review above. In all this time, I have used this computer for more than 10 hours a day, every day.

The system has never crashed which is good news. I've cleaned and defraged it religiously. (The auto-defrag calendar doesn't work. Have to manually initiate defrag each time.)

New problem: the touchpad is unreliable. It often gets hung during which you can only move around by using the arrows and 'enter' key. Mostly, it recovers after a few minutes which is a very long time. There are no updated drivers and no help for the touchpad. Believe me, I've looked.

Another glitch that's the REALLY really ANNOYING is the cursor jumps to another area because it's picking up charge from your thumb or some such. About 3 layers down the touchpad's 'advanced' settings is a checkbox that should automatically deactivate the pad while typing. Guess what? The cursor jumps around anyway. So if you're a touch typist like me who sometimes isn't looking at the screen, you might be typing jibberish and not know it.

The touchpad's 'tap' feature is often 'inoperative' and I must resort to double-clicking the button. That button is hard to click. This means I have to do it with my index finger. So, in order to operate the touchpad, I have to use fingers from both hands.

I've removed the touchpad's 'special areas' such as left upper corner for 'back,' etc. because it's so unreliable that it's not worth it.
