I am wondering if the reviewer who gave the one star is knowledgeable at all about computers. I design them and I have to say the low power cpu, 15 w compared to one using much more translates into long battery life. Face it if you just use a base number and say it is terrible, you dont understand that the cpu speed scales with need. most time in a computer the cpu does little and its response is not required to be fast for those tasks as it is wasting power. this cpu can run from 1.8 to over 3 ghz depending on the need and allowing lower power consumption. The new Haswell processor also has a number of features that make it more efficient at lower speed meaning to accomplish a task it does not need to run as fast as an older processor to do the same work. Maybe the person giving only one star works for apple, or maybe is just computer illiterate but either way it is saddening to see ranting rather than facts in reviews.

Excellent hardware, speedy performance, amazing battery life! The new intel chip (4th gen) does this machine justice. Only weak point is the sound output underwhelms.

very good computer. the processor is nice and setting the gpu to certain programs it's helpful for battery life.

the Wi-Fi seems unreliable to me and doesn't perform well enough for my online game. asus Windows 8 recovery is terrible and causes half my difficulty

Honest reviews on ASUS Vivobook V551LB-DB71T 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

Low power CPU's are usually more expensive and have lower speed. Most of MacBook Air use these family of CPUs.

If you want higher speeds, then it will overheat like an oven where you can fry an egg.

So, choice is yours. I prefer low power CPUs. Now they are able to make up to 2GHZ and 3GHz in turbo mode based on current available technology.

No VGA port? It has just the one HDMI port and I think this means it is impossible to have an extended desktop on dual external monitors? If this is the case, this is a show stopper in my opinion as I work with dual monitors while docked at work.

this is a good looking and feeling unit. I especially like the fact that the key labelling is sharp, clear and large. The unit runs very cool and quietly. It has been performing well so far. The graphics are sharp and clear.

The big issue I had was the work required to get it under control. I like to manually set up a new machine including Internet setup so I don't get a bunch or redirects when on line. This is the first pc I have experienced where you have to go online thru their portal, the unit will not allow manual Internet setup. There were plenty of startup apps to get under control as well.

Once all that is done you have a good performing pc which also looks quite nice in my opinion. It is noticeably faster than my previous unit.

Recommended if you are willing to spend some extra time on setup or you don't care about that kind of thing. A good value.

I have a slightly different laptop than this one as mine is 2.40GHz i5 with 6GB of RAM but they are essentially the same. I've had my Dell N7010 for about a year now and use it to run AutoCAD LT v2010 as well as Canvas v11, several programs specific to electrical engineering, FTP, and all the usual MS Office items. I very much enjoyed how the N7010 does not come with a lot of bloatware programs littering the hard drive. There are no soft touch controls on the computer which I applaud since previous laptops I've owned seemed to have nothing but problems with those. My Windows Experience Index numbers are as follows:

Processor: 6.8

Memory: 6.8

Graphics: 4.55

Gaming Graphics: 5.2

Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

All in all, I'm very satisfied with the performance and features of this laptop. It is well built, nice keyboard, good connectivity, and has been quite reliable for me. My wish list is that it had a blueray optical disk, USB 3.0, and that the cooling fan was a little quieter.

Shipped directly from Dell. Excellent packaging. It was simple to unpack, assemble, start up for the first time with a few of my preferences factored in the first time. The computer comes with a Getting Started type of manual that's quite thorough for that purpose. There is no expanded user manual, but there is a repair manual available online. The machine is 64-bit operating system capable, but how well that works, depends upon implementation.

I this product with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, 6G figuring that would keep me up with technology. Wrong. It put me ahead of technology (more than it could deliver). The 64-bit version hickups badly at times, and is much slower than when its running with the 32-bit version, per tech support at Dell. I should hope Something works better than what I have now. The installed version has terrible synchronization with a multiple thread program, such that I about gave up using it.

But I can't simply install the 32-bit I have to get another disk (this is an OEM install). Dell says although they did not ship me a 32-bit version of the program, they offered several options, one of which I took. Dell also says the ultimate version of Windows is faster still, but I declined, for reasons of price.

Most controls are well placed. I'd have preferred a larger Enter key. This one is the width of 2 1/2 regular keys, but no taller than any other I would have preferred one a bit larger in all directions, so that I could tell by feel (I touch type rather than hunt/peck). Full size keys (no hand cramps), standard placement for most keys, nice touch. Nice size mouse pad there's an option to shut off sensitivity when using the keyboard usually effective. Sometimes the mouse will activate by accident. The ESC key will often release it.

Very clear display, good colors, no distortion. Quiet fan at rest and for ordinary use such as a word processor. Heavier use will rev the fan up, but the "noise" level is mild enough to allow normal conversation.

If you are a heavy, 3D animated graphics user, consider the graphical observations below.

The laptop has a port for an analog monitor. It also has an HDMI port for direct, external display. This computer has a simple method to switch displays between a TV/amplifier/receiver/projector, computer, or both. For full HDMI resolution you need to switch to projection (eg TV) only. The 17" maximum screen resolution is 1600 x 900 and restricts the size when simultaneously sending a signal to its screen and the TV.

The computer has 4-2.0 USB ports spaced far enough from each other as to not interfere with physical shapes of the USB jack. One of those ports is about 1/4" from the Ethernet cable, which in my case has been needed only twice (worked flawlessly). Dell doesn't believe the technology is "there" as of this writing to employ add-on 3.0 USB.

For my usage the computer is comfortable to use on my lap without an extra pad, leaving some room between my knees for mild heat exhaust.

Like a few other manufacturers, Dell allows the function keys to be used for multiple roles. During boot up the keys operate normally, but when the operating system is control, the default for the keys to operate pre-defined Dell Functions such as volume or screen being stronger or weaker, sound muted, menu for different display options, toggle network adapters, etc. To use the same keys as Operating System function keys, one must hold down a "Fn" button (placed between the Left-Control and Windows (flag) keys). Dell made the right choice for me -I use their functions far more often than of the OS. Weakness the function key numbering is a hue of blue that blends easily against the brown keys. In dim light it is very hard to determine what the key is except by counting, but the ESC key is the same size & shape as "F1" immediately to its left, so F5 is really the 6th key over.

The computer has a built in port for some camera memory cards works fine for my Panasonic but not for the Canon. But both cameras come with USB adapters, so not a big issue.

A reasonable power pack will run unplugged for 2 3 hours before warning you that it will need to shutdown or have power.

Good OS rarely have I had to reboot or logoff. My habit is to shut the lid using a setting that puts the computer to sleep after 15 minutes or so. It does not come with office products such as spread sheet, but I found a good free open source code office product on the internet.

The internal wireless adapter works well with my 802.11n router, but I had a little trouble with getting the initial handshake. After that, no problem. I've chucked my older 11n USB adapter in its favor.

I considered switching to 32-bit based on Dell's comment that it was a better product, but later decided my problem wasn't the instruction bit size, but total available resources. See "Comment" section for a Q&A.

This laptop is a great buy for the money. It works great and was a good buying decision. I'm glad I did.

New info: Memory wasn't wiped clean. I've fixed that now, and I'm still satisfied.

Honest reviews on Refurbished Dell Inspiron 17R N7010 17" Laptop i5-460M 4GB 500GB HD

I've had my Dell N7010 for 3 and a half years now, and it's still my daily computer. I mostly use MS Office and Gmail, and some graphical editing programs and Calibre eBook management, so it's not stressed like what the gamers would do. The screen is easy on the eyes, keyboard is simple and easy and has a comfortable feel. Various I/O have been used for USB devices (mini & micro USB) and Apple iTunes have all been trouble-free. I've traveled with it about 100 times, used it day or night for work and play and it's always been just great. There are fancier lap tops that are sleek and thin, but I'd much rather have a dependable workhorse that I can trust. I'm on this thing almost every day and would not hesitate to recommend it to ANYONE who needs a dependable laptop.

I like the size of the laptop. It is in very good condition. I loaded up a couple of programs I use a lot with no problem. There is a significant problem with the keyboard it is either incredibly over-sensitive , or something is wrong with it. I was trying to write a report and the cursor jumped around so much it was impossible to continue. I generally use the computer for web-browsing and watching TV so I have not explored this further yet, although I know there is a way to adjust the sensitivity of the key-pad.

Alright, I wanted to wait a while before writing this review because most people review products pretty quickly after purchasing. This really leaves out a lot of important info considering the first month of ownership usually leaves out a lot of experience with any product. I bought this laptop January 8th 2011 for $750. It is now January 28th 2013. I think two years is enough time to get a good feel for a laptop!

So here's what I've found:

Once you eliminate the unnecessary processes that WINDOWS 7 runs, this computer is quick and can perform many things at the same time. Right now, I'm running Google Chrome, 2 windows open, with 9 tabs between them. I'm also running Vaio care (a very nice program that cleans up everything like defragging) as well as TrendMicro (my antivirus). I frequently use photoshop CS6 and chrome simultaneously without issues. ***I've given this laptop 4 stars out of 5 because Windows is a part of the computer and my issues are all with this operating system.***

It works well with my Bamboo Splash tablet, I absolutely love the HDMI output. I play movies all the time on my 42" 3D LCD TV directly from this laptop because it's so much quicker than my Blu-Ray player. Any issues with speed are directly related to the programs run. Just get rid of the stupid bloatware (Windows Media Player, internet explorer, basically any Windows stuff ) and get things like VLC Media Player, Google Chrome, etc. As long as you take care of this computer, it's well worth the money. Nothing is broken on it, USB ports all work, HDMI works, SD card slot works, all the keys are still functioning properly. The only wear you can really see is that the matte finish on the keyboard is slightly worn off on some keys (you can only see it when you're looking at it from a strange angle). It makes the keys look a *little* more glossy. The little bumps on the mouse pad area are also slightly worn off in the center, something I noticed about a week ago.

It's impossible to keep the outside clean of fingerprints, I've tried everything, but now I've just accepted it.

Overall, I'd recommend this computer for any daily user. I'm a college student and it serves every purpose I need for classes and for hobbies of mine. I've never had a computer that wasn't outdated within a year, considering I've had this one for 2 years and it's still working perfectly, I don't plan on getting a new one any time soon!

I bought this laptop in the end of 2010 as a christmas bonus for myself from BestBuy.

I was skeptical about it, because i was so used to my old laptop and i tried out any, many laptops but ended up returning them because i didnt like them and could get used to them. This laptop has a great performance rate. Only a fool would dislike this laptop. I loved the color as well. Its fast, no lags. I can actually play Fifa 12 on this without lags. FOR REAL! Just buy it, you wont regret it. I promise you that!

It cam elooking brand new, and arrived very quickly...I am very pleased with speed.....I type a 120 words per minute, and it keeps up with me, lol..

Honest reviews on Purple Sony 14" Vaio VPCEA36FM/V Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook

I had gotten this laptop back in 2011 as a late b-day present, and I have to say compared to my old 2004 Sony laptop, it's a LOT better!

I only wished I bought it online and not from Best Buy, reason being they replace the hard drive on my laptop with a much cheaper, non Sony part. Long story short lost everything about a month ago.

Though I did notice it freezing and such, I blame Best Buy 100%.

Now the laptop runs well again, the only issues I have with it is the slower boot up when you turn it on, and the fan going off for a while, it's not that loud but it can get on your nerves.

Don't bother buying it from the store, because you might get ripped off the same way.

The Color is beautiful and rich, but enjoys keeping fingerprints everywhere.

I highly recommend this laptop for anyone out there! (Just stay away from Best Buy)

As a person who is still on a budget because of the economy, this was a suitable option and price range for my purpose. Of course the battery is useless, i knew it would be, but I'll just replace it when i can. Mine came with windows vista business, so long as it had windows i was happy.

This product is working fine so far, it's an older model so it may need to have some newer drivers installed to operate the new plug and play products like optical mouses, but but my printer booted up fine with no driver disk needed.

The seller answered my questions promptly, i would purchase from this seller again.

I am having a hard time getting from one place to another. If I stop what I am doing for more than 10 minutes to answer my phone, I have to sign in and look for what I have been working on. I use Quicken for our finance. I purchased a new Windows 8 Quicken but having trouble transferring information from old quicken.

Documents storage is getting hard to get use to. My Microsoft Office which I have been updating will not transfer. To use office I have to download new software and pay an arm an a leg to use on more than one computer and was told I would have to pay each year to keep it upgraded. My husband has a desktop and we both have laptops.

If I had to buy another computer I would not buy Windows 8.

My old Dell with Windows XP is so slow, however I find my self being glad that I have not given it away.

Before this laptop, I had a DV6 laptop I recieved as a present, 4 years ago. Unfortunately that laptop suffered major overheating issues which cause frequent freezes, and friend my sound card last year, and eventually made me unable to start my laptop up, about a month ago.

Ever since last summer when I first laid my eyes upon the black cherry dv6-3019wm at a walmart, I just knew I had to purchase it. It was like love first at sight. I loved the color, and the overall design. 2 weeks ago, I finally purchased it via ebay, and I am satisfied!

Specs wise, its enough to meet my standards. 500GB is more than enough harddrive space for me.The processor and graphics card are alright. 4GB RAM and 2.8GHZ dual core processor, makes it blazing fast at multi-tasking with programs and watching videos, especially with lots of tabs open on an internet browser. The graphics card is 4250 Radeon Its not a gaming laptop by any means, and it probably can't handle very graphic intensive and advanced 3D video editing programs well, but it gets the job done with most of the basic stuff. I tried canyourunit.com, and I found out that I could play starcraft 2 at minimum/low settings at best (but not recommended settings), but I couldn't play call of duty black ops (though I could play the previous call of duty games) due to the processor not being good enough apparently. From what I've heard, this laptop is as good as an entry level i3 330 laptop in terms of processor performance. It comes at a very good price though, and I'm surprised it comes with 4GB of RAM and 500GB harddrive size. It also has some shortcut keys to instantly access the internet, printer, or calculator. It took some time at first to get used to, because I'm used to the CTRL button to be on the left most part of the keyboard.

Really, the only other cons I can list of, is that the touchpad takes some time getting used to. Its a multi touch track pad that lets you zoom in and out and scroll pages up and down with certain motions. What annoys me though is that the multi-touch features can occasionally interfere when I simply want to use it for the pointer. I'd highly recommend just buying a wireless mouse and using that instead. Luckily, you can turn off the touch pad, by double taping on the white circle on the top left of the touchpad.

Finally, if you're considering on purchasing this laptop, you should know that the battery life lasts about 3 hours with wifi on.

Overall

Pros

+Very sleek sexy design

+Keypad is incredibly comfortable. Great buttons!

+4GB RAM and 500GB harddrive space is more than enough for most people's needs

+processor and graphics cards (along with the 4 GB RAM)gets most of the basic multitasking jobs done. Can web browse and watch HD videos at ease.

+great price

+fairly quiet and doesn't overheat easily

+relatively portable due to its somewhat thin design and its weight of 5.5lbs.

Cons

-multi-track touchpad gets some getting used to, and can interfere with regular use of the mouse pointer. It can be turned off though. I recommend purchasing a wireless mouse.

-Not a gaming laptop, or one that demands a lot of graphical power (such as advanced 3D editing software) by any means. You won't be able to play some of the latest high end popular PC games at recommended and higher settings due to limitations from graphics card and processor

-battery life is around 3hrs MAX, with wifi on. I'm fine with this for the most part, since I'm not going to take it with me everywhere I go, but its annoying that the manufacturers never listed the battery life on any site with the rest of tech specs. I guess I can see why?

Overall, if you're looking for a laptop for general use (web browsing, watching videos, etc), it will be more than enough to handle most software. If you're a gamer looking to play games like Call of Duty Black Ops, or Starcraft 2 under recommended or higher settings, or using 3D editing software that uses lots of processing power and demands a lot, graphically, consider looking for computers with i5 or i7 processors and a graphics card that is at least ATI HD Radeon 5000 and up (w/ 1GB?).

Great general use laptop overall!

4.5/5 for my overall needs

I got this laptop for college. It's has a 15.6 inch screen and the display is beautiful!

I thought it would be a bit bulky and heavy, but it's not. I mean, it's not the MOST portable,

but it's perfect for me. 5 pounds isn't a lot for such a powerful PC. The quick access keys are

great. It was weird having them on the keyboard, but I adjusted just fine. The keyboard is comfortable

& responsive. The trackpad gets a little funky at times, but overall it's not bad. Oh & I love the HP

Mediasmart gallery and the quick access to Pandora radio. The webcam is one of my favorite features.

It has so many fun features! I'm on the laptop now and it's great! I LOVE this laptop!

Best Deals for HP Pavilion dv6-3019wm Phenom II Dual-Core N620(2.8) 4G 500G

First an annoyance the fan frequently cycles on and off even though it sits on a table top in an air-conditioned room. I did modify the bios setting, because it was running all the time, which made it better.

The computer is exactly what it was advertised to be and that is why I rate it three stars. I bought the dual-core because I do a lot of Adobe Elements processing of pictures. I expected more processing speed over the single processor Desktop so I guess I'll move to a Quad processor someday. Also, picture editing brings the fan to life.

The screen is the best feature. It is large, clear, and bright. The keyboard is adequate but I miss having a large one. I find the touchpad too cumbersome so I added a mouse. The wireless connection capability works well although I like to use my wired connection when sitting at the table. I generally have three USB ports in use for an external disk drive, mouse, camera. I have not used the SATA or HDMI plug. The speakers are not high quality but I use headphones anyway.

I ordered this laptop on 2/19 and anxiously awaited it's arrival. Got it today and am extremely pleased with it so far. It worked great with the wireless connection at work and now, after a phone call to my ISP, it works great with my satellite internet here at home. It arrived in great condition with only a few smudges that I'm sure a man left on it! LOL Gotta get a carrying case and some kind of mouse for playing my games. Great deal, great computer!!!

3 months later, I love it more than ever!! It puts the computers at work to shame!!! I would highly recommend the product and the seller!!

I bought this computer from Speedy Mobile and it just arrived yesterday (12/7/12). So far everything works just fine and it is fast. I have had a couple of freezes but I think that is my own fault. I will create a follow up review in a couple weeks. Overall I am very happy with this computer

[UPDATE]

This computer is still running very good. It is still as fast it was when I got it. I do all my college homework and I have all of music on it. The speakers are amazing for laptop speakers. The best part about this laptop is that I have not had to upgrade or fix anything in it. I would highly recomend this laptop to anyone that needs a fast, cheap and reliable laptop.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this Toshiba laptop. Large 17 screen with two speakers and a subwoofer. Full size keyboard, fingerprint reader, camera, SD card slot, HD-DVD, Windows Vista Premium. Almost perfect for those who want a cheap and large laptop for their movie needs.

There are some disappointments though: keyboard felt somewhat cheap (typical plastic feels, a lot worse than the thinkpads'); integrated graphics card made playing games on this gorgeous 17'' screen impossible; sound sometimes have issues (noise); And of course the defeat of HD-DVD to Blueray didn't help much either...

Overall, this is a great lappy for just your DVD needs and a little bit of other type of work/entertainment. If you are looking for dedicated graphics card or a better keyboard, go look elsewhere.

I need the number pad on the right like this computer offers. Great invention that was! I bought a brand new HP with this number pad. I type lightening fast and the problem I had with that HP was I kept hitting an up arrow throwing me into an upper paragraph someplace and what a mess up. Good thing for the undo button. The keyboard was off just enough to make fast typing not possible. I have the thing to my two finger typer husband and went to the store and `pretend typed' on every laptop there. This is the one that won. I can type like the wind and not hit other keys from a scrunched up keyboard. You couldn't really see the difference in looking it was that slight but man what a different it was! I still have my number pad and can type like crazy.

The sound..oh yeah, the sound!! I watch movies on here all the time and play music. Great sound!

It has 6 usb ports and of course head phone jacks etc. I use it a lot for skype talking with a headset.

I have worn out one keyboard, I mean letters worn down and faded off. I replaced the keyboard for the heck of it.

My only complaint is the volume button is a dial on the front and my belly keeps bumping it which will unmute the computer. I would prefer the volume be up by the monitor. But, that being my only complaint isn't bad!!

I am NOW a loyal Toshiba fan. I will go kicking and screaming into my next computer because I do not ever want to give this up. I will repair until it no longer makes sense to do so because this is my baby!

I have had no issues beyond only one with this Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad: it is a Centrino Due. A slower processor that I have not found to run hot, and it has not crashed either. All and all it is a good machine. The battery has lasted up 3.5 hours with normal use of MS office and desktop publishing. Not unexpected considering the age of which this computer came out. That also can be solved by purchasing any one of the many extended battery methods on the market. I do not use the Lenovo T60P to travel much away from home, I bought the Lenovo X41 for this and an extended battery that last me a good six hours of MS Office time (the X41 cannot handle desktop publishing but I don't require that when I am away from home--who does?). For me, whatever the subject, it has always been "the right tool for the right job!"

Oh, one more thing if anyone is reading this, I am not a rich man, if I was I would have the latest and greatest computers, one for the road and one for home as now. They still would be a laptop and a notebook computer (of sorts) but they would, most likely, be an Apple Macbook Pro and iPad. They seem to be the best system for my uses and the computer technology of today (imho).

This laptop came with passwords installed. Took me 2 days to make passwords go away and the 'secure' passwords did conflict with fingerprint security software. This machine is still showing as it belongs to the seller. The machine is in good physical condition, however, seller never 'cleaned' past users settings/passwords to set the machine ready for the next user. Windows and thinkpad software was not updated for a long period of time. After I cleaned this clutter and updated the system with windows and thinkpad software, it is finally working as normal. It just runs hot, sometimes very hot. Battery lasts 2-3 hrs depending upon task. Bulging battery pack makes it less portable. I just use it for checking email and surf the web while I am in bed.

I bought this laptop at Best Buy for around the same price that it is available Amazon. It works perfectly for many things. i personally manage music, play music, browse the web constantly, watch HD YouTube videos, etc. I even game on this laptop! It has no problem running Minecraft and runs L4D2 exceptionally well. Windows 8 is a beast of its own and I feel that it should have its own review. Anyone who docks stars off of this laptop because of Windows 8 isn't seeing what a great laptop it is. Luckily, I really like and enjoy Windows 8! Make sure that you do enough research on Windows 8 and see if you don't mind the new features and looks. It honestly is not as big of a learning curve as everyone puts it out to be. the one and only thing that I can say that is bad about this laptop though is the battery life. It will last you about 2-3 hrs on average. i usually use balanced system performance and those are the hrs i get from that. If you use battery saver you will probably get an extra 30 mins or so. So if you're a person who is going to take their laptop everywhere I would take the battery life into consideration. Maybe even purchasing another one would be good too. Ultimately, I would highly recommend this computer to someone who wants to get a nice, low costing laptop.

My mom bought me this laptop for graduation, I've been using it for 3months now and I love it. I hated it at first because I hate windows 8. I think it's very inefficient, however this was my first intro to the program and this laptop does not have touch screen which would probably make windows 8 a better experience. All in all, This laptop has grown on me. I just avoid the windows 8 aspect of it, I navigate via the desktop screen.

It also has a multi-touch cursor pad which I LOVE!

Keyboard is tricky at times but will tell everyone to dump the W8 and go with extra 4GB RAM and a 7200RPM HD. Yes now as fast as a 965 Quad Core but here is the thingwired NIC MUCH faster and wireless went from 70MB/s to nearly 88MB's a sec using Windows 7. This was bought for work and could have went Intel but this one had 3 USB ports (again all faster under W7) instead of two. Upgrade the RAM, HD and install W7 or your flavor of Linux and you will have a decent work laptop on the cheap.

I hope this review helps anyone who is in the market for a netbook without the flaws of the earlier generation netbooks. Well I was on a quest for the perfect netbook and have used so many in the past. I think I've tried at least a dozen models only to find that there was some short comings with them. This netbook will be used mainly for traveling since it is a lot easier to carry and not as expensive as other ultrabooks or notebooks.

OK lets get to it. Here are the positives listed below.

Speedy for a netbook (2 to 3 times the speed of standard netbooks)

1366 x 768 resolution.

light weight

comfortable to type

hdmi, can output 1080P Blu Ray no problem

1 x USB 3.0

Was able to swap the HDD from a 320GB to a 1TB 9.5mm

OK now here are the negatives.

Memory not upgradable, onboard and not removable.

Pain in the A to access the hard drive.

No Bluetooth

Not a dual band internal wireless card

No gigabit lan : (

Did not boot from USB/used acronis 2013 to clone drive.

Before this model was released, I was so close to buy the Asus 1025CE model that featured bluetooth and removable ram. However I am glad I waited as the CPU speed and a nice 1366 screen resolution out weighs the other features of the 1025CE model. I am more than happy to sacrifice bluetooth and extra ram for a nicer screen and increase in cpu speed. For the money you cannot go wrong with this model. I would highly recommend this model or the next model 1015E-DS02 which will have 4GB of onboard ram.

Update 5/6/13

I have been using this netbook for a week and it works great. It has exceeded my expectations. At times however it can run a little warm and the battery life is not as advertised. On a full charge it will last me about 5-5:30 hours on the lowest dim screen. To me this is acceptable as many new ultrabooks do not even last that long. This will definitely hold me over for 2 movies during a plane ride.

I got this to replace my wife's Dell Mini 10 netbook. It just arrived today, so I haven't had much time to play around with it yet. Usually I don't buy Amazon products without reviews, but I took a gamble on this recently-released Asus laptop... and I'm glad I did.

The first thing I noticed was keyboard. It's definitely easier to type on compared to the Dell Mini 10. Having the separation between the keys helps a lot. The cursor keys are a little cramped, but what do you expect on such a small laptop.

The second thing I noticed is how much I dislike the touchpad. Seems to be par for the course on many netbooks. I frequently use the tap-to-click feature (quickly tapping to register a left-mouse click) on the touchpad instead of actually pressing down in the bottom-left corner. It would only register my taps about 80% of the time which was really annoying. I figured that this could be solved by trying different touchpad drivers. The laptop came preinstalled with the latest drivers from Asus' website. I tried the generic Synaptics drivers from their website. That helped with the tap-to-click, however, the pointer speed was way too slow, even when set to the highest speed. Also, I lost the Windows 8 gestures with the those Synaptics drivers. Next I tried the Elan drivers (did a Google search for 'elan touchpad driver windows 8', and it's the first link on asus.com). The Elan drivers did the trick. Everything works great... tap-to-click works 99% of the time, pointer speed is good at the default speed setting and the Windows 8 gestures work.

At first, when I read that this had a Celeron CPU, I was a bit wary. However, after using the Atom CPU-equpped Dell Mini 10, I have to say that this Asus is a bit faster even at a lower clock speed, but I'm sure the dual cores helps quite a bit. This machine also came with Windows 8 64-bit which I was surprised to see. I'm used to seeing 32-bit operating systems on netbooks. I'm sure that replacing the HDD with an SSD would make this a lot faster, so I might have to invest in that later.

The only thing I've really tested so far is streaming Youtube videos. This thing doesn't skip a beat, even with HD (all the way up to 1080p) videos running at full screen. The frame rate is smooth. I'm pretty impressed. Screen looks decent too. Speakers can get pretty loud without much distortion.

I'm happy with the build quality as well. There's a nice texture on the plastic surrounding the touchpad below the keyboard and on the bottom of the laptop. There's very little flex to the keyboard... it's pretty solid.

If you're looking for a 10" laptop for basic web browsing & productivity, definitely consider this one.

UPDATE 2013-04-30

After using this laptop for a few days, I'm still impressed. No new issues to report. Once my wife started using it, she would frequently trigger (by accident) the Windows 8 gestures on the touchpad. If you swipe in from the left, top or right sides, it triggers a gesture. I didn't see an easy way to disable these gestures. There are registry keys that you mess around with, but I found an alternative. There is another set of Elan touchpad drivers that work even better than the previous ones that I found. Just do a Google search for 'Elan touchpad drivers', and it's the link for station-drivers(dot)com. The driver version at the top of the list provides a bunch of configuration settings in the Mouse application for disabling gestures as well as many other touchpad settings.

I also read the other review about the difficulty in upgrading the RAM and swapping out for an SSD, which is unfortunate. However, the speed is decent enough as long as you have the proper expectations.

How to make this notebook run smooth and real fast:

0.(Optional).Search on google for classic shell and install. It will make windows 8 with a classic interface.

1. Search on google for "asus elan drivers" find the site, choose windows 8 64 bit click the link below "touch pad" then download and install from the 2nd link called "global" REMEMBER USE 2 fingers to scroll up and down.

2. Go to control panel > Programs and features and uninstall every single thing from asus everything! Including that hybrid crap that makes the notebook run 20 degrees hotter , don't worry windows 8 and nvidia has everything that you're going to uninstall. You'll have to reboot several times.

3. Go to control panel > Power options it should be set on "Balanced" below there is a link "More options" click on it and choose "High Performance". Close window.

4. Go to control panel and open " Mouse" click on top on the panel "Choose pointer speed" and move the setting to a higher point.

5. You're done. Enjoy the fastest notebook available.

I was skeptical at first about this little thing but I am blown away. I own a few laptops including a last generation vaio. For what you pay here 250 bucks you get a really nice machine. I am running 3ds max with no issues in this thing.I saw some people writing in these reviews stuff like it can be better or whatever. its the perfect machine for this money. Its comparable to the ultrabook I have at speed and that's got a solid drive in it! I thought for sure I was going to replace the hard drive in this one with a solid but it is not necessary at all. Boot time is around 30 seconds . Windows 8 interface sucks but the os itself is way better than anything on the market extremely stable , I install classic shell and run it with a classic interface. As for the people who complain about this product spend a hundred more and get the 350 dollar ultrabook from asus for heaven's sake. the battery is as they say around 7 hours .Screen is excellent I seat outside on the patio and I can see it perfectly. the keyboard very responsive and adequate for your hands. The mouse pad is big enough and responds accordingly as in the instructions. the built is solid with a nice piano finish on top. It is not thick just perfect. The fan blows warm but if you know about computers celeron chips run a little hotter. but nothing weird. if you complain about that get yourself a laptop with an atom processor at less than half the speed. I bought a pink one for the wife today. Overall a fantastic product. Thumbs up to Asus

Honest reviews on ASUS 1015E-DS01-PK 10.1-Inch Laptop (Pink)

I have 4 other computers including an ASUS HD monster gaming machine. I have a 'smartphone' but I purchased this little 10 inch ASUS to fit in-between. This is my 'SURVIVAL computer'. No joking. My intent is to have a computer I can 'grab on the go' and have video phone, Radio, and Internet access just about anywhere. If Internet and Cell is out, there is still a large archive of info I have transferred to read. All my eBooks are available in the Amazon Cloud but I still download them to the Hard drive in case the 'cloud' and my account is unavailable.

I hooked it up to my 1Gb home network and transferred (at 100Mb) all kinds of important files, books, maps, 'Kindle for PC program' from Amazon, Email program, program archive, etc, etc.. My disk drive has 2 partitions (which is good). Drive C contains Windows 8 (I hate) and other programs I've installed. Drive D, I use to save data. It's just one physical drive but you treat it as two.

You have a slot for SD memory card (on the right side near front. It comes with a plastic DUMMY card that you remove to use) and I decided to use mine as a location for the cache of Internet Explorer and Firefox and reduce the writing to the hard drive. This seems to work well.

ASUS again for some screwy reason provides you with 3 USB ports but only one is the new Superfast USB 3.0. The other 2 are standard USB 2.0. I don't know why they don't make them all 3.0 as they are backwards compatible even on the cables. (Look for BLUE USB cables and a BLUE insulator in the USB Jack/Plug for fast 3.0 speeds)

The Ethernet port as is the old speed of 100Mb. I want 1,000Mb so I use a 'USB 3.0 to Ethernet 1Gb adapter. Now I can use my home network at the superfast 1Gb (1,000Mb) speed. USB 3.0 to Ethernet 1Gb adapter such as "Anker® Uspeed USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter [ASIX AX88179 Chipset, USB to RJ45, LED Indicator, 18 Months Warranty]' for appx $22. REMEMBER to use Cat6 Ethernet cabling for 1Gb connection or everything falls back to 100Mb. Yes, file transfers are faster from computer to computer and to my network storage drive.

Windows 8 as in previous versions of Windows has an option to add extra memory (for some things) called 'ReadyBoost'. It utilizes a (high speed) USP memory drive (aka Flash Drive). Not all USB drives are useable for ReadyBoost and Windows will let you know. Appx $45 I use the SanDisk Extreme 32 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive SDCZ80-032G-X46. Other Flash drives can be used. I like this one as I know it works, has a light indicating activity and I used the on my Gaming ASUS larger machine that runs Win7. There is a limit as how much memory can be used and I notice in mine Windows set aside a little over '30Gb for ready boost'! ReadyBoost is very easy to setup because you just plug it in to a USB port.

Like others here, I also downloaded a free 'Classic Shell' program that gives me back my bottom left 'Start' button and displays things more like Win7 or even XP. I still have access to the new format in the Win8 desktop if I want it. Its the best of both Worlds. Notice how Microsoft calls small programs 'apps' to appeal to the cellphone folks I guess.

You can't add more memory in the traditional fashion as in swapping out or adding new chips. You are limited to the 2Gb of RAM. (But you can use ReadyBoost and USB FlashDrives).

I can 'Tether' my SmartPhone to a USB port and use the SmartPhone as an Internet source. I measured 10Mb download this way.

BTW I had an Internet outage a few weeks ago and learned about 'Tethering' which kept me from going crazy without Internet. This added to the decision to get something with a larger screen than my SmartPhone.

I also have installed MagicJack on this mini-laptop which also has Skype. So now I have several means of communication if necessary. I keep all of this in a tote bag and will get an extra battery as backup.

Only thing left for me to get is an automobile to laptop charger and perhaps a small Solar charger, perhaps fold-able.

I have no problem with the mouse pad that comes with the machine I did purchase a small wireless Logitech 'couch mouse' which makes my life sooooo much easier. Someone commented about the built-in pad causing problems when using an external mouse if you accidentally touch it. It's true you will be running BOTH at the same time HOWEVER pressing the 'fn' (special function key left lower side) and f9 at the same time will toggle OFF (or on) the built-in pad and no more accidents.

My wireless works great at 'N' speeds and performance is the same as my other computers. Ethernet will always be a better connection than wireless. They both have their uses. Have NOT tried any of the local 'hot spots' yet.

I wish it had handles. Handles would make carrying it around safer and easier to tote. Perhaps I'll look for some straps for carrying when I don't want to use the bag with all its paraphernalia.

I'll be looking into the ASUS boot sometime as someone recommend increasing the amount of memory to the graphics 'card'. The only problem I have had was when it tried to run a super big business security program and there was zero CPU left. I still had RAM but no CPU available, so I need to watch the CPU intensive programs.

The Power Cord fits fine and does NOT fall out. I thought it did when it slipped out but discovered if you apply a bit of pressure it will actually 'snap' and give a firm connection. Amazing.

This is the second week and I plan to update this review from time to time.

I hope my comments were of help to you.

You CANNOT add RAM or upgrade the Hard Drive to an SSD in this computer. Amazon description is misleading if you read the specs, it says SODIMM under memory type. But this computer contains no capacity for user upgrades. Even if it did have an SO-DIMM slot as Amazon mistakenly says in their specs, there is no access door on the back.

I purchased this Asus 1015E to replace my Acer A1410 which my wife decided she liked so much she took it away from me to use for herself! The A1410 used an older version of the Celeron chip (SU2300), similar to the one in this Asus.

This 64-bit chip allows you to do everything a more powerful processor can do, and even has the virtualization feature, unlike the Atom processors found in most netbooks this size. This puts this computer on a higher level than most of the other netbooks, with either Atom or AMD processors.

I really like the Asus, but I ended up returning it after I discovered that it cannot be upgraded. My A1410 had come with 2GB of RAM just like this Asus, but I upgraded it to 4GB and put in a faster hard drive.

The Amazon description said the Memory type in this Asus was SODIMM, so I assumed it could be upgraded also. After I received it, I discovered that this Asus did not even have an access door on the back to access the memory and hard drive. More research on the internet revealed that similar Asus models come with RAM soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

This does not make it a bad netbook. If I thought that 2GB of RAM and a slow 320GB hard drive were sufficient, I would have been very happy with this choice. But for me, I always like to have more than enough RAM, and 2GB is just barely adequate in my opinion for running Windows. I am a power user and the small size of this unit was the main attraction, but I was planning on having 4GB and an SSD.

I am still giving the 1015E three stars because it is a well designed unit that has a better processor in it than other netbooks comparable in size. If this is what you are looking for and are not doing things that require a lot of RAM, this unit has excellent battery life and instant-on features too.

Asus could be more clear in their literature and specs about upgradability, and of course Amazon could too. At least my review might prevent others from making the same mistake I did.

If you're on a tight budget, or you just don't want to spend a lot of money, I think this is definitely a great choice. The processor and memory are sufficient for ordinary use, the hard drive is ordinary, it has a ten key on the side, a good quality webcam, reasonable screen resolution and graphics, etc. It will work great for homework, and everyday use. If you play internet video games, it may not be the best choice, but otherwise, good for it's price. Others have something to brag about, and then a weak link to compensate the cost, but this laptop is well balanced to work well.

This was a purchase made to replace an old desktop that was running on its last leg. So far the only thing I dislike is windows 8 but nothing having to do with the actual laptop (Windows 8 does take a little getting used to).

The specs were right where we needed (expandable to 8 GB RAM) as this will mostly used for school work and not design or entertainment. Videos play with no problems, the wireless works with no connectivity issues. I was able to get MS Office installed and works right into the look of windows 8. The apps included are ok, but very easy to uninstall. No disks sent with the computer but not a problem for us.

This computer is well made, and I bought it primarily because I've owned two other Gateway computers (1 laptop, 1 desktop). I still don't quite know how to feel now that I've seen the "Acer Computer" label on the bottom. It has an LED backlit screen, and the display is phenomenal. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it is HD. When I was comparing the features Amazon listed versus other similar models, the video card wasn't listed as anything special, but I found it is the same as the comparable Dell model.

On the downside, it runs on Windows 8, which I don't like. My previous laptop came with Windows "Vista", (which SUCKED), so I upgraded it to Windows 7. Maybe in time, I'll get used to the new operating system, but I doubt it. It works well, I just don't like it.

If you're thinking of buying this computer, I don't think you can go wrong. It is fast, has nice sound, a fantastic display, and a built in numeric keypad (which I unfortunately don't need now, due to a job change). It's a good buy.

Honest reviews on Gateway NE56R50u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I have not owned many laptops, I find this Gateway superb. It has taken a few days to get used to Windows 8, this is just learning.

This seems to be a nice laptop, so far I have been able to do everything I wished to. It is faster than my desktop, for some things.

I have yet to install some programs, this is due to getting used to 8.

I have found no problems, and the Wifi range is great. My Kindle, and other things using wifi, get maybe 2 bars, this laptop gets 3 to 4, which is good, since I use this at the other end of the house.

My next step will be to install FFXI game, on this, and a few other programs, I use daily.

Purchased this laptop for my grandson who is in high school. He really likes it and it is easy to use. Price was great and it was delivered on time and on schedule. Gateway products are solid and they are durable and reviews were very favorable so I did not hesitate to buy this laptop. Would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a better than average entry level PC.

I'm a techie and own 9 other computers. 6 of the 9 are Sony's. I also own Toshiba and MSI. I always thought I had to purchase the most expensive to have the best, but after purchasing the Gateway, I see now that I was wrong. This laptop is absolutely phenomenal. The screen is the most crisp, colorful and sharpest display I have ever seen. It literally blows everything else out of the water. I have it sitting next to two other laptops right now that I paid at least double for and there is really no comparison at all. Windows 7 runs smooth as silk, there is very little bloatware pre-installed. I'm simply floored by how good this computer is at this price point. Don't think twice about getting it. After seeing it in action, I really feel that it's a steal at this price. One downside for me is that the memory isn't upgradable beyond 4gb and it doesn't have a pc card/expresscard slot for my wireless modem, but since I'm using it primarily at home for photo editing, those things don't really matter to me. I'm considering purchasing a 2nd one now for my wife.

Update: Windows 7 on this computer continues to amaze me too. Today, I had 8 apps open and they all ran as if I only had one open. I didn't intend to do this, but I had Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Outlook, Word, Navicat, Hypersnap, Explorer and Microsoft Publisher all open at the same time and there was no lag or anything that would have let me know that I needed to close some apps to free up memory. The system ran smoothly as if I was just using one app, so the 4GB limit makes more sense now since there doesn't appear to be a need for more.

I was looking at a Toshiba with similar but less specs than this machine. 3GB vs 4GB memory, and 320GB HD vs 500GB hard drive. $200 more everywhere I looked for the Tob, some places $300 more. This unit also has an extra slot for another hard drive internally.

I bought this unit 3 weeks ago at a local BB for $599, which was a steal for the features and overall quality of this laptop.

This Gateway is fast, plays DVDs with no problem, the high def is great and very crisp, and the 17.3 screen is plenty of real estate to work from. The keyboard was a little flat for my liking but after using it a while I've adjusted to it.

Also the touch pad is at times not as responsive as I would like, the scrolling function that is. I would like it to be be a little more sensitive when scrolling up and down. Just wish I could adjust the response to the touch pressure some but that's not possible. But there are a lot of software adjustments to the touch pad available and it works great overall. The scrolling is usually when surfing so that could be a site or browser issue rather than the touch pad itself.

The built in wireless network works great and gets a much stronger and reliable signal than my other laptop all over our house. I can even go out on the patio with no problems. The RJ-45 network hard wire connector works fine as well.

Windows 7 is a joy on this thing, especially compared to Vista. Multitasking shows no signs of lag or hesitation when using several programs at once.

I have 5 desktops and another laptop and all have XP except one. That one sits in the corner with very little use because it has Vista on it. I use it for backup audio recording sessions in my business only. Now it will get a face lift to Windows 7 and become my primary desktop.

But it will be fighting with this new Gateway as I can see this laptop becoming my primary work machine for most things I do. I'm a techie and do light programming, audio and some video.

I've yet to try any games on it but do think most games would play alright with some settings adjustments, except for the most intensive resource using games.

Depending on the use, I've been averaging 3 3 1/2 hours on the battery with medium use on the resources, that's also having the screen about two settings dimmer from the highest setting which is still a very bright screen. The weight is around 7 pounds and makes it very comfortable for the lap and almost no heat from the bottom of the unit after a couple of hours use.

If you buy one and need a case for it, look at the Case Logic 17" Slimline Laptop Case here at Amazon. I bought it and it's a good case for the price of 26 bucks, especially for 17 inch laptops.

I also purchased this laptop at a local Best Buy for $599. Not one of the other brands had 4GB memory, 500 GB HD, wireless, webcam, card reader, etc.. for near the price. As the previous reviewer said, this laptop has a stronger wireless signal as I have no problems anywhere in our home--our HP loses signal sometimes. I also do not like the keyboard quite as much as the Hp, but ok. I did have a problem with the Norton Internet Security locked up and quit working. I had to unistall it and ordered a new copy of Norton Security 2010 for $29.99 and it works great. The 2010 version is listed for Windows 7. It may have been a Norton problem with windows 2007. The screen is larger and brighter than our HP dv6. The battery is advertised at "up to 5 hours" but I have not gotten more than three and half hours--still more than the 2 hours I usually get with our HP. This computer, upon first powerup, starts you off with the wireless setup which was unbeliebably easy. Lastly, the setup with our Lexmark x7576 wireless printer was also very easy. I had the entire system up and running with wireless printer, new programs, wireless network, etc. in less than an hour. If you are looking for a great value laptop, this is it.

Honest reviews on Gateway NV7802u 17.3-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 5 Hours of Battery

Bought this for $599.00 at BB and just love it. This is my first lap top. I found it to be Quick like lightening and great memory with the DDR3, 4g memory, dual processors, and 5g hard drive. 64 bit Windows 7 is great except fire fox doesn't seem to do well on it. The screen is large, brilliant and easy to look at. Battery life is about 3.5 hours a little less than the specs.

A video on the webcam turned out great sent it to my brother in California and he loved it. Put on a couple professional programs that use a great deal of memory and the computer didn't even notice. No problems with many simultaneous programs running. Please note: I am not a gamer!

Only negative: Key pad is difficult to use I will go wireless mouse asap. DDR3 memory with 4g is NOT expandable.

I took the lap top out on the patio, to the garage, and all through the house and the signal was great. All in all, for the money, I don't think you can do better. This seems to have it all.

I just purchased one of these at BB for $599.0 and I must say I am pleasantly suprised. Many of the reviews I read online (the majority here at Amazon or at the BB site) were spot on. I agonized for several days between this laptop and the Sony VAIO VGN-FW510/F, which you can find here on amazon for ~ 780. This included several trips to the BB brick and mortar to look at both machines. In the end, my budget limitations won out I didn't want to spend the extra 200. I thought for sure I would have some regrets (never buy cheap, someone once told me), but none in this case. I can't stop looking at the damn thing thinking that I got a good deal.

Some initial thoughts:

Screen size and quality the screen is of very good quality, much better than my existing HP DV2748se laptop; it is bright and clear whereas my HP always looks washed out. It's not an IPS panel, so the usual caveats about viewing angles apply. The screen is also of the right resolution 1600 x 900 on 17.3 diagonal inches. Text / fonts are of good size (not tiny as you get with some high resolution laptop screens, e.g., 1920 x 1200 on a 15.6" screen)it looks like my desktop at work just not as much screen real estate.

Build quality acceptable; it's not as nice as a Macbook, but it definitely feels solid. The screen however, does flex a bit but no more so than my other HP laptop. The screen hinge is hefty and solid; on my HP the screen wiggles back and forth a few degrees (i.e., it feels loose) not so with this machine.

Speakers i read some of the reviews that stated the speakers sucked...they aren't that bad: very little bass and such but more than adequate for watching TV or casually listening to music. I don't have a TV, so I'm on either on Hulu or streaming some radio station or .

Keyboard one of the few livable minuses. The keys are flush with very little separation between them, so it is easy to hit the wrong key and feeling around with your fingers for a key is difficult. It takes some getting used to. I don't think the extended keyboard is very useful.

Wireless no issues, works as advertised, I was up and running in minutes and reception very good. No blue tooth however, but that is not a minus for me.

Windows 7 a pleasant surprise! It is slick, smooth, and is what Vista should have been. BTW, I also run Linux; when I went to the store I took in an Ubuntu 9.10 boot CD and loaded it up (much to the consternation of the salesman). It seemed to find all the hardware, to include the wireless card.

Operating Temperature this laptop runs quiet and cool. My HP has this annoying feature of the cooling fan cycling on and off in a rapid fashion, i.e., it will ramp up to max rpms and the quickly turn back off, not to mention it get's very hot in my lap. Not so with this machine...i can hardly hear the fan when it is on, which doesn't seem to be very often. I assume this is partly due to the larger case size which yields a better airflow through the internal components.

Gateway Tech support many reviewers commented on this (or the lack thereof). It appears to be poor I went to the gateway web site and perused the support section of the site. I was unable to locate a number if you want to call a real person; they do offer tech support for exorbitant fees on a per minute basis; so between the reviews I have read and what I found on the site leads me to believe if this puppy breaks I will be in trouble.

Memory Limitation this machine maxes out at 4GB :-( This was one of the selling points for the Sony, which can go up to 8GB. So this might be an issue with future proofing your purchase.

No eSata or firewire port :-( However, it does have HDMI and 4 x USB.

Overall, I am very pleased thus far with my purchase and definitely feel like I got a good deal, especially for $599.00

++++ UPDATE ++++

This is an update as of 2/05/2010. I've had the machine for over a month now and I am still more than satisfied. Just a few more comments based on my experience:

Battery life appears good. I usually average about three hours not bad for a six cell battery and this usually includes playing some video or listening to music.

HDMI works extremely well. In some cases on a laptop, the HDMI port is not true HDMI, i.e., you only get video and are still left to run a separate audio output to your television. I'm happy to report this is not the case; I had the opportunity to hook up the laptop to a friends Samsung 48" HD television and it works as advertised; you only need a single HDMI cable to carry both audio and video. The picture looked excellent and was at the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Recovery Disks. None are included...you have to burn your own onto 3 x DVDs using the software already installed on your machine.

The touchpad. The single bar along the bottom is a bit hard to press. Like a Mac touchpad, you depress either the left or right extreme of the bar. With my earlier laptop, which had the normal two-button layout, the buttons were relatively easy to press so that is what I used all the time. I had forgotten (and had to relearn) that instead of pressing the left button you can simply double tap the touchpad :-) So this is what I used now and it works quite nicely. You can also set up numerous other touchpad "gestures" ala what is used on the iPhone so you don't wind up using the touchpad bar. For example, I've configure it to mimic the right mouse button if you tap the upper right corner of the touchpad (all four corners are configurable). It doesn't compensate 100% for having the bar a bit hard on the fingers, but it is more than workable.
