Sony VAIO VGN-NR310E/S 15.4" Notebook (1.73GHz Dual Core T2370 1GB Review
I recently acquired this laptop at an astounding price at a used computer store. Well once I got it home and turned it on it had not been cleaned out(hard drive) in all whoever had this laptop didn't care for it as well as they should have but I wasn't complaining due to the price I paid for this laptop! A little tender loving care which involved a good cleaning(that's my regular) a memory upgrade from 1gb to 2gb and then a call to sony customer care and they were excellent with helping me get it restored to factory conditions! He helped me every step of the way without once asking for receipt or warranty info! He didn't even ask for money at all! They were great! From now on I will only be buying sony computers from here on out! Haven't had a single problem with this laptop! Now Its basically like a brand new computer! Love it!Ive had mine for a year and a half now and the only thing ive had problems with is the battery holding its charge. ive put 2gb of ram in and upgraded to windows 7 and it runs it so smooth. i use it for school everyday and i put microsoft enterprise on it and i love it. this is one of the best investments ive ever made!

Review of Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop Computer - 59390951 - Dusk Black - 4th
I was very disappointed when IBM sold their laptop business to Lenovo; I'm not a big fan of Chinese products. Then I saw that my other son's HP laptop is also made in China; so I guess it doesn't make any difference which brand you buy. In any event, my son loves this one; it is a power packed gamer laptop.
This thing is a beast! It will play all the latest games and do daily task without breaking a sweat! If you are looking at getting the Y510p make sure you get this model, it has everything you need.
Pros:
Fast!
I7 processor
Sleek metal design
Matte screen
1080p screen
Decent webcam
Backlit keyboard with 2 different levels.
Cons:
Runs a bit hot
Touchpad is a disaster
Fingerprint magnet(impossible to remove them too)
Price from this seller is the highest i have seen.
The ultrabay GPU's are still not on the market.
Slow 5400 rpm hdd(really is the only cause for slowdown on this laptop)

This is pretty much the best Lenovo laptop money can buy at the moment. Ultra powerful with the latest gen Core i7 Haswell processor, dual 750M's, 16GB RAM, Full HD 1080p .. It will handle anything you throw at it, and then some. Definitely futureproof won't be needing another laptop for a long, long time.Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop Computer - 59390951 - Dusk Black - 4th
I bought this laptop so that I could use multiple screens for my work. Well short story, 2 weeks after getting it out of the box, the VGA out port would not output to my monitor. Such a waste.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop Computer - 59390951 - Dusk Black - 4th

This computer is not the fastest out there, nor does it have the most advanced features. But it's great if you need a very portable laptop and you don't have the budget to buy a macbook air. Though you can buy cheaper laptops, at similar specs, this laptop falls into the 'ultrabook' category as defined by Intel. The benefits to an ultrabook is the thin size, light weight, and long battery life. This is not even the best ultrabook out there, but it is one of the cheapest of those. The majority of the ultrabooks seem to be 900 and up, making this sort of a 'budget' ultrabook, if not a budget laptop.
I ordered this for my dad, who needed a new laptop for his work. Some notable points about it.
Design:
The laptop looks sleek, with a great finish that doesn't seem to make fingerprints too noticeable. The keyboard is a chiclet style -similar to the macbook air that this category of laptops attempts to follow Which means it is more shallow than the usual keyboard. I do find it easy to type with, though it does take a bit of getting used to. It looks very nice, in a subdued sort of way. I wish the screen was a higher definition, but oh well.
Portability:
One of the main reasons my dad chose this laptop. It is not as thin as some of the better ultrabooks, but it's thinner than the standard laptops, and -muchlighter.
Usability:
As the other reviewer said, the boot time is slower than I expected from an SSD/HDD hybrid. Yet, it certainly boots faster than the 5 year old laptop it is replacing! Once on, it runs smoothly and quickly for office tasks, and streaming videos. The fans seem quiet, though I haven't tried to task them with anything pushing the computer's limits. It's not a computer for gaming, and I'm not even attempting it. It seems fine for daily use / buisness/ school etc. The Battery lasts about 5 to 6 hours of streaming video and web surfing, etc.
I don't use trackpads if I can avoid it, usually with a wireless mouse, so I can't really say whether that is bad or good. My dad says he preferred the old trackpad he used, but that this one is good enough.
Overall:
I would recommend this laptop to someone who wants all the portability advantages of an ultrabook, but doesn't necessarily need something with super high performance. It's really a pretty decent little laptop. Comparatively, you might also like the Zenbook prime UX32a from ASUS, which is a similarly priced ultrabook that also has an HDD/SSD hybrid.
Update (Jan 23rd 2013): The hard disk stopped making noise, whatever's the reason. It's been working good so far. SSD drive really makes a difference, this Ultrabook boots very quickly. Touchpad (even after updating its driver) still has issues, it freaks out sometimes, requiring me to restart the machine.
Someone has written in a review that this ultrabook actually doesn't have backlight as announced by Amazon. I confirm what's announced on the page here, it DOES have backlight, and it works very well (it's a smart backlight, after sometime without using the keyboard, the light turns off automatically).
I will say the Toshiba is attractive, has a bright and sharp screen, and boots and closes down quickly.
The keyboard does not have a positive feel for a touch typist, and I was annoyed to find that in order to get a function key to operate in the expected way--say F8, I had to hold down the key and then hit F8. This (mis)behavior can be corrected in the BIOS, but should not be the default. Also the proper names of the keys F1, F2 ... are dimmed out and hard to see. I use function keys a lot, and resent this stupid system.
The trackpad works well enough, but the mouse keys are integral with it, and this makes them much less easy to use and one is never certain they have "taken".
Most laptops have a removable battery. Not this one. If the battery fails, you will have to return to machine to Toshiba. The power supply brick lacks a pilot light.
Most laptops have a hatch on the bottom giving access to the RAM storage area, so you can add memory when necessary. Not this one. You must remove the whole bottom, at the minimum, finding screws hidden under feet and labels.
It's not unique to Toshiba, but this machine comes loaded with crapware. The hard drive has only a C: partition, not an optimal setup for a drive of this size.
But yes, it works, but if I kept it, I would be chronically annoyed at myself for buying this. Instead, I am buying an Asus U36SG-DS51, which I believe more suited to my needs.

This is a good Ultrabook, but not excellent. HD makes noise sometimes (including some "clicks", which makes me wonder about its health; that I'll figure out just with time), more than the standard for most laptops. Touchpad sometimes fails on recognizing taps on some areas (it can be adjusted on its settings to make it work smoother, yet this is not among the best touchpads you'll find around). Battery life is fair good (does not last as long as the brand says), not excellent but not bad. Backlighting is a great feature that many Ultrabooks miss, makes it a plus for this one. It's not the lightest Ultrabook, but is light enough, easy to carry. It doesn't heat up much, what is very good. Its case is awesome. For about 650 dollars, it's a good deal.Update (Jan 23rd 2013): The hard disk stopped making noise, whatever's the reason. It's been working good so far. When buying this I sought a light laptop still running Windows 7 that would compare with an Asus UL30 I bought a couple of years ago. I bought the Toshiba because it appeared a good value and of comparable quality. I disregarded several luke-warm reviews in computer magazine websites. That was a mistake.I will say the Toshiba is attractive, has a bright and sharp screen, and boots and closes down quickly.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver)
I research as well prior to purchasing good Laptop/netbook and found the Toshiba was the right price /ratings. After using it for a month now it is a great product light weight screen jumps out at you easy to use and the 32 GB boot up is fast. One thing I found out when I upgraded to Windows 8 is the PC locked up we had to reset the PC I guess like most laptops with the battery inside there is a small hole under the back you have to hold in to rest. It wasn't the PC but Window 8 ...when you shut down Windows 8 you have to hold down the Shift Key as you shut down the reason is an app is running in background. This I hope an update will fix. JJJ Tech Pioneer(the supplier) was very helpful and would buy from them again thru Amazon...Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 14.0-Inch Ultrabook (Sky Silver)
i was kind of skeptical about this laptop because the price was pretty low for an ultrabook with features such as the toshiba u845-s406. i must say i was pretty surprised by its performance so far. it's very sleek and fast pretty light, and has good speakers. the only downside so far is it gets a little warm, and make some sound but still nothing to serious. although allot of people scared me with the non responding keyboard i found no problems with the keyboard but on the other hand the touchpad buttons can get frustrating. other than that the backlit keyboard is awesome-best feature if u ask me.Tuesday, July 8, 2014
HP DV6T-2000 Intel Quad i7 720QM 2.8GHz W/ TURBO BOOST, 8GB DDR3 Review
This is a great laptop at it's core, depending on your configuration, it can get even better.
The one I purchased looks nothing like the picture (the picture is from the dv7 series I believe)
My most recent test for laptops is the playstation 2 emulator PCSX2. Most games were able to run at 60fps.
For those who don't know what that means, it basically means that this machine is a true beast.
The screen is nice and bright also.
The laptop does support hardware virtualization.
The touchpad does have 2 separate buttons (not like those annoying large pads where you press on the lower corners of the touchpad to click) as well as an enable/disable switch.
I had to install the internal bluetooth module myself, not too hard as laptops go, but expensive. $20 bluetooth module, $45 cabling kit, $12 S&H. and yes, you HAVE to buy the cabling kit as it is a 2 inch cable with tips that allow you to connect the module to the motherboard.
While upgrading the bluetooth, I noticed there is also a slot to stick a WWAN card as well.
There is an hp docking connector on the left side.
I found 4 USB ports, 3 regular and 1 esata/usb combo.
the video out is HDMI and VGA.
there is a firewire port also.
1 pcmcia slot (express card 54 type) which I only used to hold the remote control.
lastly there is an SD card slot. (if anyone cares, an inserted card fits flush so you can leave on in all the time without worrying about it breaking off.
here is the bad:
this thing runs hot and loud. Keep the vents clear otherwise it will overheat and shut off.
It's rather heavy.
it fingerprints easily. (I found myself cleaning it all the time).

Review of Probook 4430S 14" I3-2310M
It is a bang for the price. Holds charge for 4-5 hours in ms office or 3-4 hours watching hd movie. Design is nice and laptop is thinner when i thought. New core-i3 is enough for all my task (which exclude gaming). Speakers are on average loudness and quality level. Has an USB 3.0 port, although not tested this yet. Package is minimalistic but it is okay for me. Keyboard is nice, wi-fi have a good reception. Have one glitch with Autocad and internal video drivers.

Plan on waiting for anything and everything SO SLOW IT IS UNREAL!Honest reviews on Probook 4430S 14" I3-2310M
I really disliked this laptop when I first got it. It was so different than the larger laptop I was used to. It's difficult at first to type on because the touch pad is extremely sensitive. You can turn the touchpad off and use a regular mouse by double tapping the top left corner of the touchpad. However, that feature wasn't working for me until recently. There are music controls that allow you to turn the volume up, down, and mute. There is also video controls (forward, play pause, rewind)You do have to hold down the FN button located next to the CTRL button on the left at the same time to use these controls. I also like the internet button located next to the wifi button at the top, it opens your default browser when pressed. Another plus is that this laptop doesn't have flat keys that will easily pop off. After 2 months of using this laptop It became easier to use. I chose this over my larger laptop because it's more convenient to move around and use. The battery doesn't last very long, just about 2 hours for me. I use it for music, email, facebook, and online classes. If you need a laptop that will have a good battery life (for traveling) I wouldn't recommend this one. Also, I had some compatibility issues with a game (Sims2) but the game still ran fast and with some adjustments it was fine. It's worth looking into the video card before buying if you play a lot of games. For basic home use it is great, I only use this laptop now. I would buy another one if I needed to. It takes some time to get used to but overall it is a good little laptop to have around.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Probook 4430S 14" I3-2310M
I originally wanted to get a Mac, but I did not want to spend as much as I would have had to in order to buy one. I feel like this is a nice low-cost alternative. I have been using this laptop for about the past 6 months, and it has held up very well! I feel like the design is very sleek. I also like that the LCD screen as opposed to all of the other laptops on the market that have glossy screens (which are AWFUL with smudges and glare). The MS Office suite and STATA run very well on the laptop, and I never have any problems attending online classes/conference calls through Adobe Pro Connect, Skype and other communication applications. I also ordered this item from Circuit City through Amazon; I chose the normal free shipping option, and my package arrived within only 2-3 days! Overall, I would highly recommend this product!Saturday, June 21, 2014

I love my new laptop. I loved my old one (also a Compaq) with Vista but it died. I had to get use to the Windows 8 and the removed numerical key pad on the right. This took just a little bit of time and now I am comfortable using it. The solid color is appealing and it is lighter than the old one. Discount Satellite 17.3" Notebook - AMD A-Series A8-4500M 1.90 GHz
I purchased a 17.3 inch HP laptop and it was defective so I returned it.
I then ordered this Toshiba, making it the 5th Toshiba I have owned.
I have tried Lenovo, HP and Dell but I always end up using a Toshiba long term as the other brands always seemed to disappoint me.
Before I took the HP back, it was killing my wireless router, making me reboot it at least twice a day.
I called HP and they claimed it was a Microsoft 8 problem and I had my doubts about that.
I went to school to learn how to build and repair computers and know a bit about how they should work.
I also went to school to get my Microsoft Network Administrator certification.
Since I have been using this machine (now around 3 weeks), the router has never stopped so I believe the problem was with the HP machine, not Windows 8.
I don't know if it is me or that Toshiba makes the best laptops on the market, but Toshiba has always worked best for me.
Two of my three adult children use Toshiba laptops and the other brand was purshased because of a special deal.
I build and own several websites and FadedFootsteps is one of them if you wish, feel free to contact me through that website if you want to talk about laptops or find a a Civil War Veteran in your family.
I need lots of processing power to edit images and perform multiple tasks and this Toshiba has all I need to do a good job and not wait for processes to finish.
It is my understanding that laptop prices may be going to go up this fall 2013 as people move to "pad" devices and less laptops are built, so now is the time to buy a laptop if you have been on the fence about buying one.
The quad core processor is smooth and fast, the Toshiba laptop came with 6gigs of ram and I upgraded to 16gigs (purchased from Amazon) Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)making this an amazing machine.
I have it loaded with Office 2013 and several software editing packages and loads and loads of pictures and files and it is running great.

My review is going to be in sections about each feature or aspect of the laptop and then an overall thought about it.
Size: This is a nice portable, not too small not too big laptop. I carry it in my backpack to and from school and I can not feel a difference between this and a small text book. It's nice not having to lug my 6 year old hp around anymore.
Screen: On the highest brightness setting the screen is very bright and well lit. Lowest brightness setting will save some battery life and it's not too low where you cant see anything but just perfect. The led screen is much brighter, more energy efficient and gives a better picture when watching movies or playing games compared to the older fluorescent style screens. The hd resolution is typical for any standard computer and on a 14 inch screen it looks better than on a 15 inch or 17 inch. You just loose some screen space but improve the clarity. The screen itself is pretty thin too. Stack two nickels together and that about how thin it is. Although it is pretty solid
Build: The computer is all plastic. Its your typical plastic that most laptops use today but everything on the computer feels pretty solid and not chincy. There is no metal screen back or anything like that.
Ports: The hdmi port works great. Hooked it up to my led tv the other day and worked right away and looks nice. Usb 2.0 port works like every other usb 2.0 port I have used and seems very standard and is located on the left hand side. I currently use it for a wireless mouse dongle. The 2 usb 3.0 ports are located on the right hand side, side by side, next to the hdmi port. I transferred some file in about 15 seconds that would have taken probably a minute with usb 2.0. If you do not know usb 3.0 is alot fast than 2.0 but if you are just transferring small word documents or small pictures you wont really notice it. I find it pretty convenient this laptop includes both and not just one or the other. It also has your typical cat 5 which includes a clasp type of mechanism where the plug in goes I'm assuming for extra security which is nice too. There is a mic/headphone port (not seperate). I read somewhere that this was a bad thing as it a combined port an not seperate for a mic and a seperate pair of headphones but the way I see it is there is already a built in microphone by the webcam so you don't need a seperate mic anyways. So if you have earbuds or headphones with a built in mic it works that way as well.
Trackpad: Has raised bumps which I prefer over a smooth one because you can get the feel of it more. Also you can turn the trackpad off by double tapping the circle indentation in the upper left hand corner. All finger control for windows 8 feel fine and I don't have a problem with them. Just takes time to get used to if you aren't already. You also have your typical left and right buttons that have a nice solid click.
Keyboard. Chiclet style. I prefer this setup as the keys are more on their own "island". Just like mac keyboards. They are more spaced out than a standard keyboard but I was able to get used to it after a couple minutes of typing. Keys are very easy to press and I don't feel a slight bit of finger strain at all. The up and down arrows are smaller than white I am used to but not a problem at all. Features on the keyboard also include screen brightness adjustment, mute, sound up/down, wifi on/off and is a standard size keyboard. It also has play and stop etc.
Sound: I didn't notice this in the advertisement but this laptop has altec lansing speakers with dolby advanced audio. They sound great for such a small laptop and wathcing a movie would be enjoyable or listening to music or playing games.
Performance: This has 6gb of ram and the 3rd gen i5 17 watt processor. The 6gb of ram should be enough for almost anyone which i nice that you don't have to upgrade it right away. The processor is the 3rd gen i5 with Ivy Bridge. I look at this processor as an efficient but powerful processor. I was able to download some files off the internet, watch 3 movies in 1080p and play music on pandora all at once. So this should be fine for almost anything you want to do. I am not a gamer so I can't comment on that. The 17 watts i5 processor had me concerned when I first got it thinking it might be too slow since the regular ones run at 35 watts but that all gone and I am very pleased to do anything I really want without having to wait for anything to catch up. I also read a review on the 17 watt i5 vs the 35 watt and the tests came back almost identical. So you get the performance while using less power. Also my older style hp would heat up lie an oven. I've been running this one pretty hard that last hour and it has yet to get hot. Stays cool to the touch. The vent is also located on the side which is great for people who actually use laptops on their lap.
Battery: Every laptop that you can get a good deal on always has a cruch. The battery life on this is about 4 hours. Thats surfing the web, watching some online videos and listening to music. It is pretty good for a 4 cell battery and just how small it is but there is better out there. I find that I am able to go to school and work on anything I have to before I leave so it works for me. So if you use this for travel or dont have a power outlet near you, you might want to consider buying another battery or a portable power supply.
Webcam: Webcam is front and center and works. It's not 1080p hd or anything but it works and has the same resolution you will find standard anywhere else.
Overall I love the laptop. It's lightweight, powerful, slim and has all the features you need. The only reason I took away the one star is because of the battery life. Its great to have this much power in a smaller laptop but it needs a bigger battery some days. Also any upgrading of the hard drive, memory etc...requires you go through the keyboard which can be a pain but it's not that difficult to do. If you are looking for a lightweight laptop that has great performance, resolution and you dont plan on using it for more than 4 hours at a time without a charge then this would be it.
****After a couple months now I have really enjoyed this laptop. I still have to reach for my charger every now and then but most of the time the battery life is long enough where I can get done what I need to. It last about 4 hours on a dim screen. Overall performance is still excellent. Loads and plays a 1080p movie on youtube without hesitation. The issue with my last hp laptop is it would get really hot. This one gets warm if I leave it on the bed, but not hot or even really warm. The paint by the keyboard and mousepad haven't dulled at all. I paid $400 for this on black friday. I would pay the asking price for this laptop if I needed a lightweight, fast and efficient laptop.
Update 4-13-13
Still running strong. No issues yet and I still like everything about it.
I wanted to inform some people who have not experienced Windows 8 yet. All of the advertisements shown for Windows 8 has the "tile" layout, similiar to smartphones and tablets. It's great for those devices but Windows 8 also has a "retro" user interface which is the traditional layout most people are used to and is found on Windows 7, Vista, XP etc. So you can have icons just like the Windows 7 but there is no start menu. You can add a start menu through a free download, google it, that works fairly well. That way you can access everything traditionally like you normally would in Windows 7 and XP by clicking on Start. Also Windows 8 is incredibly fast when starting up. Windows XP and 7 take an average of 45 seconds plus. Windows 8 Takes about 15 seconds for me to get signed on with this laptop. So it if fast which is nice if you have to log on quickly. Any questions please leave a comment.
I have never owned a Laptop that was so responsive and trouble free !! It basically set itself up, maintains itself automatically and allows me to just use it instead of always having to upgrade and maintain it myself ! When I turn it on it boots up and is running in 2 to 3 seconds .... WOW !! Battery life is around three hours which is great and this machine even gives me a warning at 14% battery life left, so I can hook it up to the charger and run it from there without missing a beat ! This little machine has NEVER gotten near hot, just mildly warm !!
Now, I am not a big fan of HP ( I have several old HP machines in my garage) but this really is the best engineered machine I have ever owned. HP has thought of everything ! The only thing missing was the mouse and a CD/DVD Drive so I purchased a LG GP10NB20 Portable DVD+/-RW External Drive and a Logitech Wireless Mouse M325 from Amazon.com, both of which worked flawlessly with this computer !
Well, I can't say enough good things about this machine, but soon I would just appear to be rambling ... so I will close with this :
If you are looking for a super fast and powerful Laptop computer at an exceptionally low price, buy yourself one of these !!
You won't regret it !
1. Lightweight. Very portable. Durable plastic casing. Reasonably priced.
2. Good Graphics and Very Fast i-5 Processor. Excellent wireless.
3. Great Storage and RAM
4. Excellent Keyboard, very responsive
5. Despise Windows 8. Using Pokki as a Windows 7 alternative, but still not the same. Waiting for Windows 8.1. We'll see...
6. Cannot find a battery replacement for this laptop. Current battery: 2 hours and out.

The only problem was that the photo of the laptop was not accurate. It doesn't have the number keyboard on the side , it only has the numbers on top. I love it. It is very fast and getting used to using the windows 8 (I had vista before so it is a little transition). It is a notebook style though it says laptop because it has no cd,dvd, or bluray drive (which for the price is fine you can always look online and get an external for a good price). VERY LIGHT! Love how light and easy to carry. It is thin and the screen size it perfect not too big but not too small. I would highly recommend it. I have had for 2 months so far so awesome will update later.Tuesday, April 8, 2014
Review of Lenovo ThinkPad 43149DU Notebook - Core i5 i5-540M 2.53GHz
For one thing, I did not expect it to come preloaded with all that gunk that nonprofessional-market notebooks have. After all, I am paying a premium up-front, right? But this came with Microsoft Office Starter 2010 "preloaded" and installing Office 2007 on top of it was such a horrible, miserable experience, and a terrible time waster. Ditto for the Lenovo's "valuable" add-on stuff where "notices" really mean sales&marketing. What a bunch of garbage!
The charging indicator does not work most of the times. It works after reboot, and then dies off. This is bad.
The wireless turns off every now and then. No clue why.
The power cord is oh-so-short! And the AC adapter gets hotter than McDonald's Coffee! Hardly the place to cut costs if you asked me. I mean, you could be at a cafe and can't use this stupid computer because the cord is not long enough!!!!
The CD player turns off automatically. Nice. To reactivate one must press the light on the CD door and all that does is to pop out the CD tray. Reboot. Fortunately, I haven't found any use for the CD drive since the initial week.
I haven't dropped it yet to test out the promised protection mechanisms... I only hope Lenovo engineers did test out all that. Now I am beginning to doubt that.
I wonder if I will recommend a Lenovo to anyone. I like the CPU and OS but that's not Lenovo. I had such better experience with Latitudes.

Discount Dell Alienware M11x 11.6-Inch i7-640 Laptop (Cosmic Black)
I love this little computer! I like having both a wide-screen laptop for long term projects, and a small laptop that I can carry for "just in case I need one" trips. This laptop is small, compact, and powerful--perfect for a videographer like myself. It runs the Adobe Master Collection CS5.5 with no trouble. I love the firewire line-in for video uploads; and it has plenty of USB 3 ports. I read else where that the only flaw in this laptop was the lack of disc drive. For me that wasn't an issue, since I have 3 external drives already. I keep the slim portable disc drive packed with the laptop, so I always have the option available. If you're looking for a small, powerful laptop, this one is a good pic!

I was hoping to get a decent computer when I ordered this. Since they have stopped manufacturing this model I was afraid that I would be getting a pretty beat up definently used version of the M11x. This was not so in my case! I got a pristine model which is so much faster than I thought it would be for such a small little system. I absolutely love the illuminated keyboard for such a little system.Best Deals for Dell Alienware M11x 11.6-Inch i7-640 Laptop (Cosmic Black)
A few months back, I bought this computer hoping for a quality gaming pc. After 2 months, it started going to s***. It overheats extremely fast, and I can't fix this because I am supposed to take the bottom cover off, but it was screwed in horridly tight, and I could not get it off. Therefore I am stuck with an $800 piece of s*** that I cannot return. Do not buy. Ever.Sunday, March 9, 2014
Lenovo G550 Series 2958XFU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Reviews
I received the new G550 a few days ago, so this is a very early review. Out of the box, the unit was very easy to start up and configure. Even the "bloat-ware" was nicely done. Instead of having dozens of icons and applications, there was a single application that walked you through various options and allowed you to select what you wanted. After this, we only had to uninstall three programs to clean up the system.
I really like the keyboard. I had first looked at the Acer, but when I tried one at Costco I found that the keyboard would flex and warp when you apply pressure. The Lenovo is very solid and has a great key feel. The quality is the same as for my much more expensive Lenovo T60p at work. It has lights for CapsLock and NumLock. I understand that some low-end laptops do not have this anymore. The number pad has narrow keys and will take a while to get used to.
The case itself is not the same quality as the Lenovo I use at work. Even though it has a nice texture, the lid looks like cheap plastic. I am OK with this because of the low price. This laptop cost 1/3 of what my wife spent for her MacBook Pro.
The webcam works fine. My son had a great time setting up the face recognition feature for logging in.
I was happy to find that the unit has three USB ports. When researching the G550, I found some document that claimed it only had two.
I ran the built-in Windows performance test. The processor and memory tests reported between 4.3 and 5.3, but the graphics tests reported 3.3. This is reasonable for integrated graphics, but don't expect great gaming performance.

Update Dec 2010
Now that we have had this laptop for a month, I have two comments:
First, while the laptop has a webcam, the picture quality is poor compared to our old USB webcam and our Macbook-Pro laptops. The image is never very sharp and was always dark until we added a desk lap. My son still likes the face detection feature for logging in. It claims it will remember faces from failed login attemps so you can find who has been trying to use your computer.
Second, we also had problems with the cursor jumping around while typing. The problem is that your wrist will touch the touchpad and register a mouse click. This happens even if you are using an external mouse. Luckily there is an easy fix. Pressing Fn-F8 can disable the touchpad when you do not want to use it. Other than this issue, we have had no problems with the keyboard.
Overall, I am still quite pleased with this machine.

One substantial deficiency of this laptop is the inability to adjust the 'sensitivity' of the touchpad. As delivered, the pointer was dificult to control with any precision through the touchpad. The location and movement is erratic. Don't bother looking for a "Control Panel' page to make adjustments to touchpad properties. It isn't there. You are only able to change 'mouse' properties. Looking for a 'driver' on the Lenovo web site that would actually let the user control the behavior of of the touchpad was unsuccessful. To my knowledge, a 'hard wired' touchpad with no user control is unheard of.Honest reviews on Lenovo G550 Series 2958XFU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Buy ProBook 6470b C6Z42UT 14.0" LED Core i5 2.5GHz 4GB DDR3 500GB HDD
I am very disappointed in this particular machine. I know that HP carries a good product and that is why I took advice on acquiring this machine. It is slow and often ceases up, often taking long to close and open programs, Pages taking long to load.
Bought as a new machine with the kind of specs: ProBook 6470b C6Z42Ut 14.0" LED Core i5 2.5GHz 4GB DDR3 500GB HDD... that should not be happening.
There is one other observation the battery life. Before I loaded my information I charged and used the HP on battery only. I only got 4 hours 15 minutes. For a promise of at least 8 hours battery life that was my first disappointment.
I feel that I got a dud and will seek to have it replaced.

I've had my V5 for a few day now, and I have to say that I am more than satisfied with my purchase. The only reason I almost gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is do to the confusion on the product page. The features list 1TB, but the product specs show 750GB. This confused me because this particular model only came out with 1TB. To help with the confusion anyone else may have, my pc arrived with 884GB of usable hard drive space and 917GB Total space. The rest is taken up by things necessary for the PC to function. My PC arrived on time through FedEx, with the sealed Acer box inside a shipping box. Upon initial start up it requested to register and gave a short 'how to' demo for general Windows 8 functions, which is very nice for those of us unfamiliar with it. Since the initial start up it has only taken my pc a few seconds to go from completely off to fully operational. The touch screen is very responsive, and I love having the option to use it and/or the keyboard/mouse pad. The onscreen writing/typing function is pretty nifty too, and the screen flattens out to almost 180 degrees so your not straining you're wrist while you're trying to write. The backlit keyboard is awesome as well, and seems to be set to shut off after a term of nonuse, so it will not interfere with movie watching or drain the battery. The battery life is another perk for me, and it really does seem to last the 5 hours it claims to with constant use. There is another review here listing issues with the Atheros driver, and yes, before I updated the driver my wireless dropped several times within a few hours. HOWEVER, it was a VERY quick and easy fix. You can get the updated driver straight from the Acer website as stated in another review. The picture quality is awesome for movies and/or gaming in my opinion. At least it is 200% better than my old Laptop (which was only 2years old.) The price tag on this PC is not outrageous either. All in all I would have to say that this computer is more than worth the price. I have been on it nonstop since I received it, and it has kept up with me every step of the way, without over heating or lagging. Truly a great Acer product.....*note* how fast the driver downloads will depend on your Internet provider and/or your connection speed slower connection equals longer download time. If you have problems with the wireless dropping during the download, connect it directly to the modem with something (like an Ethernet cable.) My connection speed is 28mbs+ dl so for me the download was pretty quick. Finding the driver download is pretty easy too. In the search bar on the left pull out type in atheros, and all of the files relating to it will come up (you must go down to files under the search bar) select the file that says atheros setup (or atheros install I honestly don't remember which.) It will bring up the setup wizard, and you should be good to go from there.
It has been almost 2 weeks, and I love my new laptop.
Touchscreen make Windows 8 much more user friendly then when used with a mouse.
I do have to say, that moving icons around the START menu was much easier with USB mouse.
I blew away all stuff I will never use, and personalized it under an hour.
Swipe from right, you get the 5 charms of generic options... search, share, start, devices and settings
I love my Picture password option to log into my PC. it is neat.
swipe from bottom, I see all apps, I am having fun exploring... I do not see this as a disaster, I like it.
I have loaded Adobe Element 11, Panasonic HD writer AE, Arcsoft Media Impressions HD3, ULEAD 6.0
( runs fine, just edited project and burned DVD), microsoft Office 2000, no glitches, no blue screens.. everything
so far is running smooth.
I will try to create HD movie sometime next week, and will provide update.
When my personal backup data drive gets scanned, it creates another app icon, when I go to it,
I see another start menu type icons with all pictures, video and music... It is awesome to glance at it
from time to time and see pictures from years back...
I have nothing bad to say... and this thing called "backlit keyboard" it is pretty, but I have not found any use for it.
Battery will be definite problem with time, but what did you really expect as default battery?? 9V brick?
Then you would complain how ugly and bulky the battery is... I will order upgrade when the battery dies.
Update on 5/9/2013
Only problem so far is the DVD-RW application used with Windows Explorer.
I had to delete and re-install the DVD-RW driver, but still get intermittent
"DVD drive is not recognized" when dragging files to the DVD-RW drive.
I used different application, ULEAD DVD recorder, and everything works well.
HD processing worked fine with applications that I have been given.
Very happy with the purchase.
My thoughts so far.
Laptop: sleek and sexy looking. brushed aluminum looks very nice. Screen is very clear, sharp, and easy on the eyes. I've not even bothered to set up my second screen as of yet! Love the back-lit keyboard. The keyboard itself has a nice touch to it, good response and appropriately sized for my hands. The touch pad is one solid pad (no right and left buttons) and some have mentioned that they don't like this. I don't mind as I usually "two hand" a touch pad anyway. I use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, so I don't bother with the touch pad much and when I do, I can manage.
Things that I noticed:
-DC battery included does not have a "straight end connector" but rather has a right angled adapter end that plugs into the laptop. This is a bit awkward for my desktop layout because the cable needs to be adjusted forward or backward to lay the cable flat. Maybe this design keeps it from being pulled straight out of the power socket as a straight cable would do?? IDK. Just my own annoyance.
-Speakers are on the bottom of the laptop. Seems to me a better design would be on the top, across the length of the laptop above the function keys. Pandora was a bit muffled when I had the laptop laying directly on my lap instead of the lap desk. Sound improved with a lap desk holding the laptop, but still... I'll probably hook a Bluetooth speaker to it if I want better sound.
Mini card reader (SD) is on the front left corner of the machine (which seemed weird to me) and I can see where it might get in the way or bumped if you leave it in.
Video/RJ45 dongle nice that the manufacturer includes this dongle to plug into the proprietary port for Ethernet or video support. Bummer that I need to find a convenient place to store it for quick use when I need it. I usually have my second monitor attached to my laptop when at my desk this will just be another cable "mess" on the left side where all the ports are located.
-LOVE the touch screen. It seems to be point on. It has worked flawlessly for me using both included and custom apps and surfing the web. It really enhances my computer experience. One of the major reasons that I bought this model and I'm really glad I did. LOVE it!
Highlights:
quiet
cool running (did not overheat the entire time it laid flat on my lap without a lapdesk)
screen is sharp touch screen is AWESOME
keyboard is comfortable (back lit keyboard is very nice)
battery charged to 100% in about an hour (I wasn't paying close attention as I wasn't in the room while it was charging)
battery lasted roughly 4 hours for me (again, I didn't pay attention to when I exactly unplugged). I was listening to Pandora and installing multiple programs, so this probably taxed the power consumption.
before it without warning shut down. To be fair, the screen did darken about an hour before shutdown and give me a warning, but when it actually shut down, it didn't even say "I told you so!".
Light weight. 5.5 lbs. Much lighter than my Dell Inspiron. Will be much easier carrying around.
Fast. 3rd generation i7 CPU and 8G RAM is a nice upgrade for me. I'm confident that it will last me a while.
All ports are on the left side as other reviewers have mentioned. Not a problem for me.
Windows 8
I actually like it. I'm a Linux gal at home and Windows gal at work. Experiencing new OS's is not an issue for me because if I don't like what they give me, I create it how I want it.
Installed RocketDock.com dock (apple dock) and loaded my most used programs on it.
installed classicshell from sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/) to give me a start menu that Windows 8 has removed in this OS.
OVERALL: I highly recommend this laptop. It's an affordable option for someone looking for a fast machine with touch screen

I am pre computer generation, but skilled enough to know what I wanted in a lap top. I use an I pad and I phone regularly so my habit is to touch the screen.....this computer allows me to switch from touch to manual at any given time...so it is perfect for someone who has old school habits intermixed with new school technology. The computer is everything as advertised and more....for a non-geek, I am thrilled at the vibrancy of the screen and the user friendly technology. The size is perfect ...not too big, but ample for "tired" eyes. Settings allowed for a deep purple background and automatically made complimentary text colors that work great. The backlit display is handier than expected. And the keyboard has a comfortable feel....by being larger, there is plenty of room to rest the palm of the hands while typing. The tutorials and support provided are thorough and simple to understand. And Windows 8? For those of us old enough to have had to transition repeatedly to new programs as the computer technology evolved so fast, this is a snap....I have connected it wirelessly to all of my devices including printer...and it works perfectly. Love it more than any computer so far....and, it is much less expensive then in store pricing.Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V5-571PG-9814 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky
Received laptop 2-day prime in good condition. Install instructions were straight forward. Followed a few prompts and I was up and running in what seemed to be 5-10 minutes if that much. I did not have any hardware issues, outdated drivers, or wireless issues that some folks are indicating that they've had. My install was clean and quick. I rated 4/5 (would really like to give the machine 4.5 stars) because of some minor design questions that I had. In addition to that, my screen came with a damaged pixel on the screen (1 pixel is missing color). It is noticeable on a black screen, but I don't notice it when I'm working on normal browser or app windows. 1 pixel isn't enough to make me box it back up and demand a new machine. My thoughts so far.

I wanted everyone having WiFi issues to know that's it's an easy fix. Go to the acer website and download the newest Atheros wireless lan driver. Once you do that go to System Device manger in your control panel.Goto network adapters and look for the atheros driver goto to uninstall and reboot your computer. Then install the new driver 217v3 once you do that it should run smoothly. I haven't had any problems since I've installed the new driver. Watching movies on this computer is only average. If you look from the right or left the movie becomes unwatchable, you need to look directly in the center. They could have made the screen more vibrant!!!!
