Best Acer Aspire AS5552-7819 Notebook AMD Phenom II Dual-Core Deals
This is my second Acer its great and fast! It does everything I want and more! It works well with my varmint 910xt GPS as well as my kindle fire! Why pay more then you have too! This notebook is great to run kubuntu 11.04 instead of Win7. All devices seem to function perfectly. Wireless card works w/o any hiccups (widc), internal mic/internal speaker work too (skype), even a built-in web cam is recognized (cheese). Lcd brightness, battery charging status, Fn key shortcuts work out of the box. SD card reader works very well. I am very pleased with this product. One warning: Acer system recovery refuses to reinstall Win7 on the hard drive that was completely erased. I think it is better to purchase another HDD/SDD to install Linux or make it dual boot. For me it is not a problem because I did not plan to use Win7 with this notebook.

Cheap Gateway MC7801u Refurbished Notebook PC
Backlit keyboard is the best feature and makes using this laptop far more versatile. Unfortunately, the keyboard itself is not as effective for everyday use. The center area of the keyboard is not as well supported so you have to punch the keys a lot harder to get them to register on the display. A large HDD (320GB) and 4gigs of user memory, along with Intel Centrino 2.0GHz CPU, make this 64bit Vista PC performance's better than most laptops in the under $600 price range. The WEI is only 3.7 because the integrated graphics support, although "accelerated", is not as good as most full size Desktops with dedicated plug-in video card. The 16" LCD is a true 16x9 widescreen display and looks absolutely stunning. Also built-in to this laptop is 1.3MP webcam, microphone and two speakers. HDMI output connector is a nice bonus. Only thing missing is Bluetooth support and a BluRay DVD player, but at a significantly higher cost. Internet WiFi access is very fast and makes for a seemingly much more reliable connection than my even my two year old high end desktop PC. All in all a very good value and one of the few Notebook PC available at any price with a backlit keyboard.
I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to that, but it ran every application I threw at it.
Drawbacks: It's heavy.
I never replaced the battery in all that time and it was starting to go bad on me.
And, the power connector was a weak spot. I had to reinforce it to keep the cord from disengaging.
Still, a great laptop. I don't think it locked up once in three years.
This computer cannot play 1080p or 720p files, it struggled to use itune's visualizer. Games don't run well if ever. WoW gets about 18-22fps on the lowest settings. The battery has a life of about 1 1/2 hours and will stop working after 6 months (I've had 2) whether or not you use it.
Max is 4gb of ram
Does not have a dedicated video card like it says on the box (shared 1024mb)
Not a full sized keyboard
Don't let the gloss screen pull you in you won't be watching anything hi-res on this computer.
The backlit keyboard has never had a problem and the 4 usb ports and hdmi port and the fact that it had an expansion card slot are the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars. IMO this laptop was not worth the 800 I bought it for and is defiantly not worth more than 200-300 in-box much less used. Gateway was once a trusted brand but they've really gone down hill in recent years.

I bought this laptop when it was still in stores. Keyboard is the worst part, you have to hit every key in the center an firmly, the keys started popping off mine in a couple months. The touch controls work when they want and will sometimes flicker on and off. This computer cannot play 1080p or 720p files, it struggled to use itune's visualizer. Games don't run well if ever. Buy Acer Aspire AS5733-6838 Laptop, Intel Core i3-380M, 2.53GHz, 4GB
Two of the USB ports will charge but will not recognize devices. I added a powered USB hub to the working port and provides all I need. Usb port problems seem common on the model of Acer.
Con: The only thing I find a little distracting is the keyboard keys, they are flat instead of concave like you have on a standard keyboard; takes some getting use to. However, I use my laptop connected to a Kensington universal docking station most of the time so it really doesn't affect me that much; regular desk monitor and keyboard used 90% of the time.
Tip: I pull out the battery when using the docking station or power cord so that saves the battery from being charged unnecessarily. Battery lasts much longer that way.

This is a great laptop, and perfect for all my needs. Like advertised, the laptop came practically new, and I have had absolutely no problems with it. In fact, I have ended up using it more than my desktop, which I have packed away. This has become my primary computer, and it stands the heavy use and transportation very well. The battery is not very good, and it's a little heavy for my slight frame, but the speed is good, the memory excellent, and it runs like clockwork. I would definitely recommend this computer.Best Deals for Acer Aspire AS5733-6838 Laptop, Intel Core i3-380M, 2.53GHz, 4GB
Pro: Laptop was advertised as an Intel Core i3 processor but when you check the properties on the computer it shows it actually has the Intel Core i5 CPU M560 @ 2.67GHz. I think there must have been an issue with the i3 so later models of the AS5733 were upgraded serupticiously. If they advertised it as an i5 they would have had to ask for more $$ so as not to cheapen the laptops with the i5 as advertised. So it was an even better deal than expected.Con: The only thing I find a little distracting is the keyboard keys, they are flat instead of concave like you have on a standard keyboard; takes some getting use to. Cheap Dell Inspiron 15z Core i5-3317U Dual-Core 1.7GHz 6GB 32GB SSD+500GB
I am having a hard time getting from one place to another. If I stop what I am doing for more than 10 minutes to answer my phone, I have to sign in and look for what I have been working on. I use Quicken for our finance. I purchased a new Windows 8 Quicken but having trouble transferring information from old quicken.
Documents storage is getting hard to get use to. My Microsoft Office which I have been updating will not transfer. To use office I have to download new software and pay an arm an a leg to use on more than one computer and was told I would have to pay each year to keep it upgraded. My husband has a desktop and we both have laptops.
If I had to buy another computer I would not buy Windows 8.
My old Dell with Windows XP is so slow, however I find my self being glad that I have not given it away.

Acer Aspire V7-582PG-9856 15.6-inch Touchscreen Ultrabook (Cold Reviews
I got this laptop a few weeks ago and I love it. Acer has been known to make cheap casings for their laptops in the past, however this laptop feel very solid and well built. Battery life is closer to 5 hrs., not the 6.5 as advertised but still a good battery life for such a thin Ultrabook. Touch is great, and responsive. the 720m is a very nice touch. Almost every Ultrabook on the market has the HD 4000 integrated, where this has 2GB dedicated ddr3 720M graphics for smoother graphics interface and better capability to run more intensive software. For the price you cant get a better set up!!!!!!
Pro's:
Great price
Touch
i-7 with 4MB of cache!! (new haswell processor generation = better batery life)
8GB DDR3 Ram
2GB Dedicated Graphics
Solid Battery Life
SSD for quick boot time
Number pad (a must)
Good touch pad (distinctive click when using right or left click)
Con's:
I have actually gotten my battery to last me over 7 hours before
Windows 8 takes a little getting use to, but with the touch screen I'm glad I have it over Windows 7
Other Thought's:
Would have liked a 4th USB port
Power button could be more accessible and obvious
Final Verdict Amazing hardware for the price. You would easily spend over 1500 for a comparable Sony. At this price and with this hardware you cant afford not to buy it.

I have had this laptop for a few weeks now and have been using it regularly. one thing I have noticed as i have had it longer is that since the resolution wont go up to 1080x1920 when you open excell spreadsheets you have to zoom out of 100% to see the full document. Can be a bit annoying at times. Other that that I am still loving this computer and happy I got it. No buyer's remorse here!
Now the prices are 999 but it's still a product that can be chosen over laptops that cost double.
I have it for over a month now and I have no major complains. Windows 8 took a little until I set it up to work like W7.
Pro:
The touch screen is awesome!
Backlight keyboard was a pleasant surprise. When is on battery it activates only when you hit a key.
It's light and looks cool.
Cons:
I would have loved a VGA output for a second display. I plan to use it for presentations; therefore I have to change my video projector.
The battery doesn't really works as advertised. I would say that lasts for 3 hours tops with WiFi on and using the GeForce video card for all applications.
I've been trying for two full days now to get support from Acer but their only advice is for me to bring the laptop in where they'll charge me $50 to reload the OS. A brand new machine, unused and they want to charge me for support cause "software isn't covered by their warranty". Never mind that this seems to be a config issue right out of the box, it's "software" and they want to charge to fix it.
At the moment from my POV, it sure looks like Acer rushed out a poorly planned product with a redundant SSD and software that doesn't support it.
Update.
1. Acer service tech tells me now, over the phone, that I have to bring my laptop in and pay for them to reload the OS. They will not tell me what they use to enable the SSD cache, if not with the installed Intel RST, and also state that if I tried to enable that cache myself, their engineers could at their discretion void my warranty. I asked him to send me that reply via the open service ticket cause I want it in writing and it has been 3 days now with no response.
2. I went to an IT mall nearby yesterday to check and found that none of the Aspire V7 laptops showed any SSD activity so it's not a config issue on my machine, it's the way Acer ships these laptops. The SSD we pay for seems redundant.
All I can say is, avoid ACER!!!
Like:
Thin & somewhat lightweight compared to my Lenovo Z560
Comfortable (keys are well placed & keystrokes are light) back-lit chiclet keyboard w/ 10-key
Comes w/ 8 gig of ram already installed
Card reader
Fairly long battery life (6 1/2-hrs according to manufacturer. Haven't test it out yet)
i7 processor
Dedicated video card
Touchscreen
Dislike:
Obligatory Windows 8 hatery (not Asus' fault though. But I do wish they offer an option to downgrade to Win7 or provide compatible drivers on their website for users who wish to downgrade themselves)
Touch-pad. Finger gestures are great but I can never find a proper area to scroll left to right or up and down. Wish they would make textured touch-pad so my fingers can find more traction & tactile scroll lines so I can scroll by touch & not worry about my finger placement on the pad. Another thing I'd like to mention is that the left + right click buttons takes more effort to engage and wish they would make them separate & not part of the touch-pad.
Card reader location. PITA to find by touch & you'll need to wedge your fingernail to pull the dust cover off (it does not pop out by push) or rotate the laptop to find it. Wish they would make the slot facing the user instead, not on the side.
Power button. What were they thinking?! Another "need-to-find-it-by-feel-because-it's-hidden-on-the-left-side-of-the-laptop" & to make it more difficult, it's camouflaged in black like the rest of laptop's bottom portion. Again, what were they thinking?!
I/O ports on the backside of the laptop. Yes, if you want to use USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 x 2 are on either sides), wired LAN, HDMI ports, you'll have to rotate the laptop around.
Caps & Num lock notification lights. There aren't any, not even on the screen. So for lazy people like me, I won't know if they're on or off.
Integrated battery. When your battery runs dry, you're assed out unless you can find an electrical outlet or a portable power bank that can power laptops.

May just be me, but I notice zero activity from the SSD using the Windows Resource Monitor and Task Manager. Intel RST is installed and apparently needs SATA to be in RAID mode in BIOS to work. Acer however ships these laptops with SATA in AHCI with no RAID drivers available Which means if you change it, the existing copy of Windows will not boot and if you try to reinstall, Windows Installation will not see any drives.I've been trying for two full days now to get support from Acer but their only advice is for me to bring the laptop in where they'll charge me $50 to reload the OS. Received the laptop fine, nice specs. But the touchscreen clicks itself repeatedly. The only option offered by Acer was to send it to Texas to be repaired. Save yourself some trouble and order from a more reliable brand.Thursday, August 14, 2014

I got a decked out E6330 from work. It's a light and very fast computer with long battery life and I like to use it. But, I was totally shocked when I saw the price. I also personally own a 9 month old 13" macbook pro and a two year old Lenovo T400. Externally the Dell is no where near the build quality of either of those machines, not even close. The screen colors look pasty in comparison and the keyboard feels rubbery and is not very nice to the touch. When I type on the Lenovo I get a really satisfying snap to the keyboard. When I put my hands on the macbook the texture and smoothness of the track pad make it a joy to touch.
When I saw the order sheet for the Dell it talked about the Tri-Metal chassis which made me think the case would be really nice, but it's maybe just average. It also gets surprisingly hot just sitting on my desk doing nothing. The fan kicks in and out in an extreme fashion instead of just calming winding up and down. My Macbook almost never gets warm to the touch unless it is really chugging, and I almost never notice the fan. The Dells lid hinges are very stiff and if the laptop is sitting on a desk and I try to lift the lid the whole laptop lifts up and sometimes the lid gives way after it's tilted up and the the bottom part of the machine slams back down onto the desk. The first time I saw this happen I was shocked. I've handled probably a hundred macbooks at my previous job and they never did that even once!
I really don't know why so many IT departments who have to force you into windows buy from Dell instead of at least getting you a Lenovo or Asus.
Still for a basic workhorse this machine works fine and its processing speed is a plus. The screen holds itself up and swivels with no problem for different viewing perspectives. The battery life makes it easier to be untethered and haul the laptop to a back porch or around the house. I use it on a lap desk and have not noticed excess heat on mine.
The list price is a bit shocking and I have feeling mine was part of a group buy for a lower cost. The short and long of it is that I would not pay the sticker price for this laptop, but if you still need a laptop for work, give this one some latitude if you can get one for a more reasonable cost.

Like the other reviewer, my Dell Latitude E6330 was provided by my employer to replace a five-year-old Dell laptop that was pretty sluggish. This new machine zips along, processing Photoshop or Word without hesitation. The start up and shut down are so much faster, I feel like I gain 20 minutes of working time a day. Most days I connect it to a monitor and keyboard via a docking station, so I don't deal with smaller screen size or bit clunky keyboard except on teleworking days. Even then, this PC is passable, though, I agree, the color rendering is not quite true and for real nitty gritty production I prefer my Apple.Still for a basic workhorse this machine works fine and its processing speed is a plus. Review of Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7005 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)
Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. This is the most attractive notebook I've ever owned. Someone across the room heard a music video I was watching and said "that computer has great sound." It is great to have my numeric keypad back for crunching numbers.
Mobile broadband and 16GB flash drive USBs worked as expected. So did WiFi and a hardwired network. The 17.3" video is just awesome. This is my second, larger, notebook and I'll never go smaller again.
Very satisfied, great price and fast, free shipping from Amazon.
I'm a great fan of Amazon, but before you buy this gem, you might want to run over to your nearest Office Depot it's currently on sale for about a hundred bucks less........
The only downside to the laptop is that it does not include HDMI out. This was disappointing considering that the screen is an HD display. It does, however, include VGA out, plenty of USB ports, memory card slot, and an SATA port.
If you are looking for a budget friendly large screen laptop, I would certainly suggest the Toshiba L555D-S7005. Also, there is a similar size/processor Gateway laptop in the same price range. However, before deciding on the Gateway, you should compare the customer service and warranties between Toshiba and Gateway. Toshiba definitely wins in this category. Gateway was bought out by Acer in 2007 and they are still getting their act together internally.

But not from Best Buy. My other laptop suffered some kind of disease and we're away from home, so I opted for a "cheap" replacement. 4 gigs of Ram (!!) and room for 4 more and a 320 gig hard drive are among the things that make this an outstanding buy. It's BIG and that's either it's strength, if you want a big screen and full size keyboard AND keypad; or it's weakness if you like small........I'm a great fan of Amazon, but before you buy this gem, you might want to run over to your nearest Office Depot it's currently on sale for about a hundred bucks less........

This laptop has impressed me so far. Not only is it inexpensive, but it seems solidly built. It is very quiet. The screen is huge and looks great. It is powerfully enough for all of my home PC needs. The only 2 negatives are the weak sound quality (not unexpected in a laptop) and the touchpad buttons, which make a noticeable clicking noise when you press them. If you can live with those minor annoyances, I recommend considering this laptop for your home PC.Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7005 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)
I was first looking at smaller sub-notebooks in the 11.6" 12.1" screen range. However, after trying that size out in a store, I realized 12" was an incredibly small screen. This laptop's screen is amazing. The size is perfect, the brightness is excellent, and the colors are vivid. Windows 7 Home Premium runs very well (you can tell the AMD dual-core processor helps with multi-tasking). Incredibly, even with a 17.3" screen, the laptop is very light and portable. The full keyboard with numeric pad is a great addition.

Great screen for viewing videos and site at 1600 by 900 resolution. May be a bit of a magnet for fingerprints but still a fast and great looking machine with plenty of RAM and CPU to run pretty much anything.Thursday, June 12, 2014
Cheap Samsung Series 3 NP350V5C-T02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)
I ordered from Amazon's 3rd party seller since it was little cheaper than Amazon LLC.
Came with stock condition which were below descriptions.
Windows 8 64 bit
Core i5 3210m 2.5 Ghz 3.1 Ghz turbo boost [not in power saving mode]
6GB DDR3 1600Mhz [2 + 4 GB]
AMD HD 7730m 2GB Graphics card [External]
Intel HD 4000 Graphics [integrated]
500GB 5400RPM Seagate HDD
Overall, Is it not the high end laptop but it is decent laptop that can handle lots of graphic work & gaming.
Since I hated using Windows 8, I decided to downgrade to Windows 7 [I had OEM CD].
It requires some average knowledge of computers & software but it is not so complicated.
First, I copy the disc into my Samsung 128GB SSD by using recovery mode by pressing F4.
Thankfully, windows 8 provides disc copy mode, so you do not need to buy 3rd party software like acronis... etc.
I boot up with SSD [still in Windows 8] blazzing fast boot up which took about 15 sec, 1 sec to resume.
Windows 8 had this BIOS protection called "UEFI" which blocks user to install other old edition of windows like XP, 7 , vista.
What you do is, get into the BIOS [F2] and go to BIOS area and switch the option into UEFI ENABLED.
Once you done that, now you can boot up from your CD.
I believe everyone know how to install windows 7.. so I skip to performance.
Make sure you download the graphics driver for AMD from SW update otherwise it does not work properly.
In the beginning, I got 4.6 for CPU calculation, so I thought it was defective... [sorry I was dumb].
Later on, I found out that I was missing of graphics driver & in bios power saving mode was on.
I downloaded CCC from AMD put into max performance when it's AC plugged, and in BIOS I also put as maximum performance.
Boot up to the window, window experience index shows 7.1 , 7.5, 5.6, 6.6, 8.1 [calculation, RAM, Graphics, Gaming, SSD]
I tested on Starcraft 2 in ultra mode, which has average FPS of 35 ~ 50 depends on connection.
When it is in HIGH setting, has FPS of 60 ~ 80 which is very smooth!!.
I would recommend this laptop if you want to go back to windows 7, not for windows 8.
On the other hand, Samsung support isn't so helpful over the phone.
I asked them about finding the graphics driver, they found different graphics which never worked on my laptop.
Therefore, I needed to my own research to get the best performance from this machine.
It is well built laptop but without Backlit keyboard but it is great performing machine that handles great on games & some graphics works.
However, make sure you turn off the max performance when you are using battery [I always use laptop with AC on]
Hoply it is reasonable review for this laptop, and sorry about my grammar mistakes [I am not English person].
Thank you.

It's a great little laptop. You can watch 1080p video files on it, play minecraft on all high settings, and it has 6 hour battery life for low power consuming activities.(like running word, excel, listening to music etc.) it gets about 2 hours battery life for running everything at 100% which is quite good. You'll get even longer if you leave the power presets the way they are. On battery they have processer and graphics limited to 50% power. Of course you can change that if you want like I did, but if battery life is your concern then leave it alone.Honest reviews on Samsung Series 3 NP350V5C-T02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)
Discrete graphics, a healthy dose of RAM, and a Core i5 processor makes this a great middle of the road. I will say they have upped the price 10% since I purchased one, and I am sad to see that, but the current price is still $100 less than average market value of this laptop. It is hard to find a laptop with this set of features in this price range that is usually reserved for a basic-use machine. I lowered the rating to 4 stars for the jacked up price and bloatware that unfortunately comes with any computer.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Samsung Series 3 NP350V5C-T02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)
I really love this laptop. It's sleek, responsive and takes pretty much everything I throw at it without any problems. The reviewer complaining about the graphics card must not know what they are doing because it works flawlessly for me. My only complaint is that the usb 2.0 ports were kinda difficult to deal with, when I first started using them. The 3.0s were fine, but the 2.0s had to be "broken in".Sunday, April 13, 2014
Review of MSI Computer Corp. G Series GT683DX-840US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
The product came new, in the original manufacturer's sealed packaging. Delivery took only a few days, on the early side of the estimated time for delivery. As for the product, it looks and works great so far. I have had no problems running Skyrim, which has very high requirements, on ultra hi-res settings for the last couple of weeks. Overall a great buyer experience, and a product worth considering for anyone thinking about purchasing a gaming laptop.

I bought this for my son for his Minecraft addiction ;). I did some research online and this came up as one of the most affordable gaming computers out there so I took a chance and bought it. It is a great computer not only for gaming but for all of our needs. It doesn't come loaded with programs so take that into account and the price when purchasing. For us it was a winner. Sorry I am not tech savvy and cannot comment on the specs.Best Deals for MSI Computer Corp. G Series GT683DX-840US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I ordered this laptop to run software that my old computer could either handle laboriously or not at all. This machine is an amazing value for the power it can offer. The software that my other computer had trouble with now runs seamlessly. I haven't tried gaming on this machine yet as I've strayed away from PC games over the years, but something tells me this computer will bring me back into that world. Also, despite what some people say I think the orange LED lights on the side are awesomesauce.Thursday, April 3, 2014
Cheap Samsung Laptop / Intel Core i5 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB M
We didnt get this laptop from amazon, but figured it would be nice to leave a review. My wife had a Toshiba laptop she bought in 2010 and after a few spills and damages from the kids the laptop fried in 2011. We took it to best buy where we got it and got this laptop as a replacement because of our protection plan. This laptop was actually more in replacement cost then her old laptop, but the store was past closing time by the time they were ringing us up and they just had a manager adjust the cost difference.
This laptop runs great, and has lasted our kids. The screen is glass covered and protects it from damage. The aluminum is a nice touch, but more of a preference. The chicklet style keyboard makes for a more simplistic, less cramped, keyboard. I prefer full sized keyboards with number pads for gaming, but this laptop was nice because I didnt have to worry about hitting too many buttons at once when I was moving around too much in the game.
The laptop works to play skyrim, battlefield 3, and many other games that I want, while my wife has a very portable laptop to tote around to wherever. The battery is good, the build quality is great, and for the price and value its definitely a winner. We even spent just a little bit of cash to upgrade to 8gb ram, and makes this all the better.
I have used many machines, I build computers, repair them, etc. So I know what to look for in a good laptop, and this definitely set the bar for similar value laptops.
The bottom line is that this is a good machine, and a great value for the price. For anyone looking for a nice laptop that has enough power to do what you need, without feeling like you are carrying around a bag of bricks then this is the perfect laptop.
other then that I don't do much more with it and can't say much more about it
This pitfall certainly wasn't apparent while shopping for this notebook, and hopefully I'll remember to scrutinize it more closely in my next purchase.

I don't know why people are giving this laptop one star. They may not be treating it right, because this laptop has a special option that extends battery life by charging up to 80% when on AC power. My battery still has enough power on full charge to give it 4 hours of use! I bought May 2011, and it's still running just as fast as it did when I first bought it. Whatever Samsung did with this computer, I'm sure their newer ones are even better! Great laptop, I probably won't get a new one until I've drained the life out of this one, probably in another 2 years!Best Deals for Samsung Laptop / Intel Core i5 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB M

I just wanted to say that the samsung touchpad is overactive, producing undesired clicks and gestures. The touchpad driver offers no settings to adjust sensitivity or to automatically disable whilst typing. The only remedy seems to be manually inactivating the touchpad by pressing Fn-F10, and constantly toggling the feature is tedious. This pitfall certainly wasn't apparent while shopping for this notebook, and hopefully I'll remember to scrutinize it more closely in my next purchase.

First off, I've owned this laptop for 15 months, and it is a nice looking laptop, is fast, and offers plenty of space (640GB). There is another review here about the tempremental touchpad I agree 100%. My primary complaint is with Samsung, and with it's so called warranty. Six months after the purchase, my laptop got to the point where it needed to be plugged in 100% of the time. I would, at most, have 10 minutes of un-tethered laptop use. I called Samsung, thinking that it was a battery problem and asked for the battery to be replaced. I was told that this was not covered under warranty (which came as a shock to me), and they ran me through a diagnostic battery check with maybe added 10 minutes to my unplugged use, so the call to Samsung was useless. Battery life consistently got worse, so I decided to bite the bullet and just get a new battery. I had previously owned a Dell, so I thought popping in a new battery would be an easy and productive fix. Which brings me to the next topic it's an internal battery YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE BATTERY YOURSELF!!! Batteries plus can't do it either. Best Buy (where I bought the laptop) told me a new battery would run $120-$200 to change the battery, $100 or so for the battery, plus another $80-$100 to have someone "install" it. I paid over $800 for this laptop, and I think that A) Samsung should cover batteries under their warranties, and B) I should not be had this problem with a 6 month old laptop, and C) I should be able to change the battery myself. After this experience, I will not purchase a laptop with an internal battery, it's a deal-breaker.Wednesday, March 19, 2014
Cheap Dell Latitude D830 Core 2 Duo Laptop
We bought our Dell Latitude D830 in April of 2008 and have never had any sort of problem with it. It has always done the job required of it without any difficulties at all and worked perfectly right out of the box.
Admittedly we have not been a heavy user of the D830 and mostly use it around the house when we need some freedom to do our work somewhere other than our home offices. It has not been exposed to extremes of temperature and has not been dropped or otherwise subjected to abuse.
It has wireless access to our Ethernet network and provides the flexibility we desired when we bought it. When taken out of the house for some special projects it did its job properly.
This is one of two Dells we have along with an HP desktop and has probably needed less attention to keep it working right than any other computer we have.
Intel Centrino Processor, NVidia Quadro NVS 135M Video, Wired / Wireless Ethernet, 4 GB Memory, 160 GB HD, CD/DVD RW.
I've been using it about 3 4 years now. With a 3 year warranty, the only problem I ever had (to be expected) was the hard drive going bad. I replaced it for free near the end of my warranty.
I'm running dual boot:
Windows XP / Linux Mint 9 LXDE
I spend more time in Linux Mint 9 LXDE than I do in Windows.
When I'm not in Linux Mint 9 LXDE, I'm either test booting Linux Distros from CD / DVD, using Sun VirtualBox to boot test downloaded ISOs, or creating or booting from Linux USB.
I've run just about every version of Ubuntu from version 9 up to / through version 10, Linux Mint (HIGHLY recommended light on resources, user friendly): CrunchBang, Knoppix, Fedora 14, Puppy Linux, GeexBox, ZorinOS, Back-Box (Network Diagnostics, Network Security Toolkit also run without a hitch.
It has problems with Gnome 3.0 / Unity, and the latest versions (11.*) of Ubuntu as well as running 3D graphics or for that matter HD video.
But, for my purposes: Internet Connectiity, Basic Application access (Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Graphics, Audio / Video) LibreOffice, VLC, Audacity, Gnome MediaPlayer, ImageViewer, Feh, FSLint (for cleanup), Ubuntu Tweak, BleachBit (Cleanup / Config tools). TSClient for remote connectivity, It does what I want, need it to do with a minimum of fuss.
Ocasionally, I drop over into Windows when I absolutely can't get it done in Linux.
But, ever since switching over to Linux a majority of my Windows (Virus / Trojan) problems and the attendant performance hits went away.
I print to an HP LJ1300 from Linux. I use Document Viewer (built in) for PDFs. I've ported basic documents / spreadsheets to / from Office 2007.
The only thing it doesn't do well (if at all) is Flash Development. There, Windows (specifically Adobe / Macromedia) Flash has an edge. Haven't played with it much at all, but, for 3D develpment, there's Blender.
Not intended to be a Linux Promo. Just to let you know how my Latitude D830 is setup, what I use it for, and how it runs.
I do tech support for a living and support Windows based systems primarily.
If you're not married to Windows, this is a fine system for running Linux (besides the added advantage of it being FREE or Open Source.
Now for gaming. Important-------> THIS COMPUTER WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO WATCH SD VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE AND WONT BE ABLE TO PLAY MOST GAMES! But this does support windows 7 areo 64bit or 32bit but wont suport vista areo for some reason.
This is a great laptop for work or normal internet browsing like on Facebook.

Lenovo G550 Series 2958XFU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Reviews
I received the new G550 a few days ago, so this is a very early review. Out of the box, the unit was very easy to start up and configure. Even the "bloat-ware" was nicely done. Instead of having dozens of icons and applications, there was a single application that walked you through various options and allowed you to select what you wanted. After this, we only had to uninstall three programs to clean up the system.
I really like the keyboard. I had first looked at the Acer, but when I tried one at Costco I found that the keyboard would flex and warp when you apply pressure. The Lenovo is very solid and has a great key feel. The quality is the same as for my much more expensive Lenovo T60p at work. It has lights for CapsLock and NumLock. I understand that some low-end laptops do not have this anymore. The number pad has narrow keys and will take a while to get used to.
The case itself is not the same quality as the Lenovo I use at work. Even though it has a nice texture, the lid looks like cheap plastic. I am OK with this because of the low price. This laptop cost 1/3 of what my wife spent for her MacBook Pro.
The webcam works fine. My son had a great time setting up the face recognition feature for logging in.
I was happy to find that the unit has three USB ports. When researching the G550, I found some document that claimed it only had two.
I ran the built-in Windows performance test. The processor and memory tests reported between 4.3 and 5.3, but the graphics tests reported 3.3. This is reasonable for integrated graphics, but don't expect great gaming performance.

Update Dec 2010
Now that we have had this laptop for a month, I have two comments:
First, while the laptop has a webcam, the picture quality is poor compared to our old USB webcam and our Macbook-Pro laptops. The image is never very sharp and was always dark until we added a desk lap. My son still likes the face detection feature for logging in. It claims it will remember faces from failed login attemps so you can find who has been trying to use your computer.
Second, we also had problems with the cursor jumping around while typing. The problem is that your wrist will touch the touchpad and register a mouse click. This happens even if you are using an external mouse. Luckily there is an easy fix. Pressing Fn-F8 can disable the touchpad when you do not want to use it. Other than this issue, we have had no problems with the keyboard.
Overall, I am still quite pleased with this machine.

One substantial deficiency of this laptop is the inability to adjust the 'sensitivity' of the touchpad. As delivered, the pointer was dificult to control with any precision through the touchpad. The location and movement is erratic. Don't bother looking for a "Control Panel' page to make adjustments to touchpad properties. It isn't there. You are only able to change 'mouse' properties. Looking for a 'driver' on the Lenovo web site that would actually let the user control the behavior of of the touchpad was unsuccessful. To my knowledge, a 'hard wired' touchpad with no user control is unheard of.Honest reviews on Lenovo G550 Series 2958XFU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
