I researched and researched looking for the best machine I could get for my money and I could not be happier after purchasing the Toshiba C855-S5194. But........I purchased it locally at a major office supply store because their 'in store' discount coupled with the $50 rebate was a better price than here. Most of the negative reviews I'd read about *any* laptop was that Windows 8 was horrible. Well, that has nothing to do with the performance of the laptop. AND, Toshiba sends you a free e-copy of Windows 8 for Dummies (only 32 pages) so there's no excuse to say you don't know how to navigate. Memory was a huge selling point for me, there's lots of it on this machine, and it had a better processor than some of the others I was looking at. I did have to change some of the settings on the touchpad because I didn't like the defaults (i.e. to scroll you have to use TWO fingers and I'd rather use one on the side or bottom). You have to be slightly deliberate in your typing, but I'm ok with that too. And I've really been impressed with the battery life. I can work on it for up to four hours (maybe a little more). The web cam is very clear and adjusts the light accordingly. My husband and I Tango (free video chat app) and the images are good (depending on your signal). I installed Office Home Professional without any trouble. It's light for the size it is. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone in the market!

I have been shopping for a laptop for about a month now and almost went for another HP but decided to try a Toshiba instead and so far I am completely happy with this decision. First time using Windows 8 but I am catching on quickly.. very easy to set up and super quiet. The laptop is quite fast and quiet, and so far works for what I need. ok so the not so good things, the keyboard is ok... it feels kinda cheaply made like I may lose keys for some reason... also the sound isn't that great as well so I will end up purchasing external speakers but its ok Im not too picky about it. Also I expedited the shipping but didn't get it in a timely manner which kinda upset me a little bit as I paid extra for that and if I would have done regular shipping it would have been free and I prob would have gotten it at the same time.... I will recommend this product as a light to medium user who doesn't need to do anything extravagant like heavy gaming... thumbs up!!!

Received sooner than expected. Works great, good speed. Very happy with this laptop. I would suggest downloading the latest video driver and touch pad driver, What a difference they made. Touch pad is smooth and reacts a lot better. Video is much smoother with no delays.

I highly recommend this laptop.

HARDWARE

In this range price: unbeatable. It is what I expected.

OS

If you don't like Win 8, create a logical partition to install Win 7 in a dual boot setup. Just look for how to prepare a UEFI Boot USB.

Do you need VGA Output? I bought this adapter, but amazon warehouse shipped to me one not active, but it works:

I bought this for $400. I don't think you can probably do much better than this for the price. It's very light and has pretty solid build quality. Very thin.

I'm an IT guy and I often carry this instead of my work laptop on trips because its lighter and boots nearly instantly when an additional mSATA card, which isn't included, is installed in the mSATA slot and Windows is installed directly to it. I highly recommend techies adding an mSATA card as it will make this perform like a $700+ laptop.

First of all, I have used a lot of laptops professionally, dissassembled many laptops so many times.

Fujitsu siemens

Asus A6jc

Asus G73jh A2

Dell Latýtude E6410

Packard bell NAV05

Acer 54series

These are my previous and current laptops. But only this one has stupidly placed hardwares and cheap palmrest (case) whose nails were broken in the first hdd replacement trial. Then while right corner nail which hold keybord was also damaged and keyboard is making noise during pressing top right corner letters.

If you want to buy this and just use. Do not dissassemble to replace RAM or any of the hardwares, especially harddisk.

This is my dissapointment.

When you look at the performance, laptop is doing good job with W8 and 128 V300 SSD (yes, I broke the nails but managed to swap to SSD). Startup is around 6-8 seconds.

WEI

CPU 6.5

RAM 7.2

VGA1 5.1

VGA2 6.3

HDD 7.9

If I don't destroy laptop physically, I am planning to use it for a long time due to its performance.

Edit: Additions

Battery life seems good. Wifi is on, brightness is @max and couple of episodes are downloaded and watched during cycle. It lasts around 5 hours.

It comes with 1 month McAfee and Office 365 subscription.

CPU fan isn't starting working till CPU is overloaded since CPU is consuming only 17watts. Therefore it is very quite. Even the fan is working, it is working slower than usual.

I didn't see any heat issue. Only the section where fan sits is heating slightly but it is difficult to feel from keyboard.

For these positive reasons, I have changed rate to 4 stars.

Nice general-purpose laptop. Great for using around the house, office, dorm, and the occasional road trip no bulky additional accessories needed.

The keyboard great feel, love it even fat fingers can't miss the mark. Keys are readable, even in low light. The keyboard is not backlit a fact, not a flaw. The primary purpose of the function keys (a space-hogging holdover from pre-Windows days) is as buttons for help, brightness, media controls, touchpad on/off, volume, wireless mode, and even switching between multiple monitors no SHIFT, CTRL, or ALT required. Now, if they would only do that with the number pad, we non-accountants would get some practical use out of another large chunk of the keyboard. There is a caps-on light on the caps lock key, which is blocked by your hand if you are typing, but was omitted entirely on some other models I looked at. (If you are reading this, Toshiba person, move the light to the left corner of the caps lock key so it can be seen when hands are on the keyboard.)

The sound loud enough for a hearing-challenged person (me) to easily hear a few feet away. The built-in mic is loud and clear for phone calls.

The speed fast! As another reviewer noticed, the computer is faster than the DSL speed, so I try to be patient and not blame the machine my IP is throttling and it is just easier to notice now. To get all the speed and memory, Windows 8 64-bit is installed, which is the future but not backward compatible with older software, so expect to spend some time visiting software and vendor sites for updates and replacements.

The touchpad basic but easy to use. The manual says the touchpad will scroll, but mine doesn't. (Yes, I checked for updated drivers!) The touchpad is placed left of center, below the standard keyboard, so it falls between your hands when typing. This placement eliminates accidentally brushing the touchpad with thumb or wrist when typing a problem of previous laptop generations with a center-placement touchpad.

The CD/DVD-RW drive I'm just not ready to give that up. The little bit of extra laptop weight is less than having to carry an external drive (and looking dorky in public). A built-in drive also doesn't take up extra desk space or use a scarce USB port.

Screen resolution low. In fact, it's the minimum screen resolution required for the current functions of Windows 8. Text and pictures are certainly readable/viewable, but can be grainy. The viewing angle with text is flexible enough so that people looking over your shoulder can easily view it, but for pictures and movies, the view needs to be straight ahead. (You can, however, attach an external monitor if you really want those people looking over your shoulder to clearly see your vacation pictures.) What you probably won't be doing with this screen resolution is serious gaming or graphic design. To be fair, when shopping, I found low screen resolution on laptops across all brands and models at this price point and above, so low screen resolution seems to be a favorite manufacturer's compromise for mid-price laptops. I would sacrifice some of the abundant built-in storage, which I will never use, for a higher screen resolution, and add a star to my rating.

The webcam ok for occasional use, but you may want something better if you do a lot of online face time.

Battery lightweight, but not user replaceable, so it will be expensive to have replaced when it no longer holds a charge. Personally, I like the resulting lighter weight and am gambling that the battery will last until I need a different configuration and then use this laptop with the power cord as a backup at home or office. Full battery charge is enough to watch a couple of full-length movies or half a season of your favorite TV series, but for continuous all day use, you will need the power cord for a recharge. It does recharge fast, though. You can extend the battery-only usage by putting the laptop in sleep mode when you are distracted or away the laptop pops immediately out of sleep at the touch of the power button (my favorite feature). I tried the `battery power-saving' feature to extend the battery charge, but it made the screen so drab and dreary that it wasn't worth the resulting mental depression to gain a few extra minutes between charges. When attaching some external peripherals, the laptop is under-powered on battery power alone, so you will need the laptop power cord and/or separate device power when attaching some devices, including speakers. A mouse or flash drive is no problem, though.

Port placement Two USB, the mic, and the headphone ports are located toward the front of the right side, so anything with a cord is in the way of using a mouse or reading/writing materials for right-handers. The exhaust fan vent is on the right, too, which keeps the bottom of the machine cooler for true lap use, but also keeps the right side a few degrees warmer than the rest of the workspace and the mouse hand toasty. I still have many corded USB devices and use a mouse for most work, so the port and vent locations make this laptop inconvenient to use as a full-time desktop replacement. Lefties will find the port placement good for them. As a righty, I find so many nice features on this laptop that I will suffer the occasional cord tangle when necessary and start seriously looking for wireless replacements.

The most incomprehensible design feature is that the port labels are tiny etchings on the bottom of the laptop, so you must turn the laptop over and use a flashlight and magnifier to see them. Although I have been able to visually match a round peg to a round hole from an early age, I cannot identify which identical round hole is for the mic, which for the audio. There are three identical lights on the front of the laptop, which probably convey important information, but without visible icons, are useful only to help find the laptop in the dark. It also took me a couple of turns around the perimeter to find the SD card slot, hidden under the front beveled edge next to the lights. The audio ports, card slot, and lights are all below the metal portion of the keyboard, so there is no excuse for not etching the icon labels for these ports on the top so they will be visible/usable without manhandling the laptop. Toshiba did find space for several stickers you don't care about, but if you want port labels, you will have to make your own stickers. Ok, this paragraph was a rant thanks for listening.

The User's Guide well done, easy to follow, and very helpful getting started. Do skip directly to Chapter 1 (Getting Started) to bypass 28 pages of warnings, cautions, and responsibilities (yours, not Toshiba's) it's way too late to tell me that stuff after I've already bought the machine. As of this writing, Toshiba does not provide the User's Guide online for this model, which is standard practice for other brands and appliances. I saved a copy of the User's Guide to external storage, but think that should be Toshiba's responsibility, not mine.

Free cloud storage. I got free storage for 2 years on Dropbox through registering with Toshiba plus more free storage on Skydrive courtesy of Microsoft Windows 8. Free is nice.

In summary:

You will no longer need external speakers, a headset (unless you want privacy), a USB laptop cooler pad, external storage for your zillions of pictures, a portable CD/DVD player/burner, or a rolling laptop case.

You will need to update or replace old 16-bit software, consider replacing corded with wireless external devices, and find something to do with all the time this speedy machine saves you.

I was very disappointed when IBM sold their laptop business to Lenovo; I'm not a big fan of Chinese products. Then I saw that my other son's HP laptop is also made in China; so I guess it doesn't make any difference which brand you buy. In any event, my son loves this one; it is a power packed gamer laptop.

This is a very nice laptop, and I have a few comments on it myself. It's battery life is about 4 hours at 80%(set at that to preserve battery life), the graphics are great, and the sound is LOUD, but it does sound kind of tinny(no bass, duh). It comes with a Plants vs. Zombies trial, and a shark dash full version. The laptop plays Star Wars Battlefront 2 on it, so you know it has good speed. It plays it without delay, and is very fast. On all the other computers the internet is slow, but on this thing for some reason it is very fast. Now for the problem that most users are afraid of: Windows 8. It really isn't that bad. I am not the I-phone kind of person, so I disregard most of the stuff on it. Basically what it is is an app menu that you can put what you want on it(like installed games, or Google chrome, which, by the way, doesn't come with it), and have ease of access to things like S-Player(aka, a twisted version of windows media player), and the internet. The only problem I have with this computer is the touch pad. It is unresponsive to the scroll feature(two fingers in a direction), so you may have to buy a mouse for this computer. Luckily, I already had one so this wasn't an issue. I would recommend this laptop to anyone, because it is a masterpiece of laptops. Save your money on a big expensive one, and buy this one!

The laptop is not as gigantic as i expected it to be, maybe i've gotten used to the screensize.

The battery life is decent, i live in a country with regular blackouts and this battery serves me well.

Once you get used to windows 8, it totally rocks. You can pinch to zoom with the mousepad of this laptop.

Consider buying a remote mouse. Right now i use my phone as a remote.

The sound is powerful.

What i hate: the regular solitaire etc are missing. pinball 3D is the only full game that comes with the system. I don't mind buying games, but data connection's very expensive where i live.

I needed a large screen for games, movies and pattern-making software. For less than $500, this baby is a dream come true.

While searching for the ideal laptop for myself, I found that all laptops seem to have huge trade-offs. This one is no exception. I chose it because it packed a relatively fast CPU and a decent graphics card into a very portable PC. Every other laptop I found with discrete graphics was a lot heavier, and most were pricier. The trade-off here (as with all laptops that have fast CPU's and discrete graphics) is that battery life is far from impressive. Unfortunately, there is no 9-cell (more powerful) battery available. Based on the location of the battery on the bottom of the laptop, I don't think there ever will a more powerful (and larger) option.

Performance on this is great. Windows 7 is extremely responsive, audio production software runs smoothly, and game performance is even better than I expected Dragon Age Origins looks beautiful at the screen's max resolution with most graphics settings somewhere between medium and high. I haven't tried editing video yet, but based on what I've seen so far, I don't expect any performance issues. If you're just planning to browse the web and work on spreadsheets, documents, etc. this may be overkill for you. You would probably have no problems on a cheaper machine with a slower CPU, without discrete graphics, and with longer battery life.

Speaking of battery life, it is pretty short, but I find it to be usable. Asus added a dedicated button for switching power profiles. Switching to battery-saving mode gives a significant boost over high-performance and entertainment modes. I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems that battery-saving mode will get you 4-5 hours of web browsing and other light work, while entertainment mode might let you watch one movie before you need to search for an outlet. Depending on how and where you expect to use your laptop, this may or may not be a problem. In high-performance mode, hot air blows out of the right side, but the bottom doesn't get hot enough to burn laps.

In response to other feedback I've seen:

It's been said that the touch-pad buttons are stiff. I don't find this to be the case at all. They seem quite comfortable to me, my girlfriend, and my mother.

Another reviewer mentioned having issues using the touch-pad scroll. The part about scrolling not stopping without an extra touch is a non-issue. This an intentional behavior that can be changed or turned off in settings. However, the part about having to hit the line is a very real issue. The problem is that the outer edges (maybe 1/4") of the pad do not respond to touch. You don't need to hit the line exactly, but you do need to make sure you're not right at the edge, which frequently requires a look. This is the most annoying problem I have with the n81vp.

Keyboard quality and noise is fine. It's comfortable to type on. It's not silent, but not noticeably loud either.

The function key is where most people would expect 'control' to be, but after a few weeks with the laptop, I find myself getting used to this.

In summary, the Asus N81VP-D2 is great for audio production, multimedia work, gaming, and most other demanding tasks.

It's a waste of money for more casual users and no good if you need long battery life.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this is one superb notebook. I was also looking for a notebook that is not too large (15" and above) nor too small and underpowered (12" and less). In the 13" and 14" range, I pretty much narrowed it down to ASUS and Dell Studio XPS 13". I own a two-year old Dell XPS 13", which had its motherboard replaced twice in two years due to heat issues (this seems to be a very common problem with Dell XPS 13" line and Dell doesn't seem to acknowledge it or actively try to find a solution). Bestbuy has Dell Studio XPS 13" at about the same price as this ASUS, but with only one-year warranty. As can be expected, I am hesitant to make a purchase due to my past experience.

ASUS is fast and stable with Windows 7. The machine looks and feels well built. Furthermore, the machine stays cool even under heavy use. The small complaints I have are that it doesn't come with dedicated media keys/buttons, and the keyboard definitely feels different from that of Dell and takes some getting used to. Certainly, I am not faulting ASUS for these. A good thing is that you are getting a bargain buying from Amazon. I was in Taiwan last December the same ASUS model sold there for roughly US$1,300 when you would expect a lower price because ASUS is a Taiwanese brand. I guess Amazon's trade volume must entitle it to a huge discount.

Best Deals for ASUS N81Vp-D2 14-Inch Brown Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows

I regret purchasing this computer; it really is not worth the price compared to others on the market now. I have also had some issues with the computer itself. If you Google "ASUS N81 crash" you will find that many people are experiencing random system crashes, especially when trying to do any gaming at all on this computer. There is a possible hardware issue that causes the crash, which many assume to be from the ATI Mobility card, but ASUS has not acknowledged it.

I sent my machine back to ASUS for repairs due to all the random system crashes I experienced; it was updated as "Repaired" and assigned a tracking number the day after received. I called and they said no issues were found with my computer. I called several times and left my number several times, but they would never let me speak with a supervisor, and a supervisor would not call me back. I got my computer back and found that they had removed all the AMD/ATI software from the machine, but didn't make any mention of this on their notes. There is a problem with either the graphics card and/or its software. I did a full reformat and fresh install and got rid of all the ATI and AMD software except for the driver, and my system no longer crashes. The WLAN card included is also really weak. I replaced mine with a Gigabyte GN-WI07HT-RH that I had in an older machine, and it gets much better connection. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 7200.4. Just google the name of the hard drive and you see what a piece of crap it is. It's a noisy, clunky hard drive; I guess I will replace it with a Hitachi drive on my own dime. No real reason to RMA it for the loud Seagate because it seems like it's the product itself that is a joke, not just mine.

This computer has had issues with multi-tasking. It locks up and requires a full reboot. When I watch stream feeds, I have to reboot 3-4 times in a 2 hour period. I have a netbook that performs better than this computer. It's pretty much a piece of crap.

I experienced terrible customer service, a poor warranty/repair department, and unaddressed shutdown issues make this a computer to avoid, in my opinion. I have purchased three ASUS laptops in the past three years, but after the experience with this one, it will be my last.

Honest reviews on ASUS N81Vp-D2 14-Inch Brown Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows

When I purchased this laptop I had several criteria

1) Powerful enough to last my family 3 years at least

2) Enough gaming power to do light gaming

3) Portable I didn't want a 17", I wanted 14-15"

4) A maximum of around $1000

5) A quality name/warranty this is a laptop afterall

1) Power The "windows experience" rating is 5.8 but that is due to the replaceable hard drive. The Processor got 6.4, the graphics 6.7. While the stated max of the motherboard is 4gb RAM, its reported to handle up to 8gb. No this isn't one of the lasted i7 or i5 processors but its a very powerful dual-core and if you aren't doing media editing this will last a long time.

2) Gaming I have Dragon Age running at max details and it doesn't even skip a beat. The specs call the graphics chip a HD4650, the sticker says HD4670. The only difference between the two is clock speed, and this is clocked as a 4650. You could over clock it but I don't see the need yet. This isn't a laptop for hardcore gamers but it can play hardcore games.

3) Portable this is a 14" laptop with desktop replacement hardware! Of course the downside is the tiny battery can't keep up. I'd suggest buying a spare battery or staying near an outlet.

4) When I got this laptop it was 1000 w/ a 100 dollar rebate, its gone up a bit but its still a steal!

5) Most laptop companies give a 1 year hardware failure warranty. Asus gives a 2 year hardware and 1 year accidental damage. Oh and Asus laptops are much more reliable than HP/Dell/Gateway ones.

Cons:

1) Battery

2) No DVI output

3) Battery

4) Typical bloatware

5) Battery

Bottomline: Get it while you can!

The design and huge screen of this Acer laptop is fantastic. However, there was a major flaw in the process by which Acer installed software on this laptop model that causes it to randomly freeze--at least that is the cause that I read online at some point in researching this laptop's glitches. Sometimes a couple of weeks will go by with no mishap, other times the laptop will freeze 3 times in one day. I have wasted countless hours online looking for a solution (working with the battery removed, flashing the BIOS with an update) and nothing has worked. It's an attractive machine but if Acer can't even get software installation right to avoid its products having such a fatal flaw, then I'm afraid this is the first and only Acer product I will buy. The mousepad is also infuriatingly hard to control, worse than any laptop mousepad I've ever used. Sometimes the mouse will get stuck on the right side of the screen for a couple of minutes and no movement whatsoever will free it until it just fixes itself after a minute or two. Avoid.

This product was not new. It had some issues out of the box, which has been resolved, one of the keys has already came off and looks as if it has been glued on before. After the tech issues were resolved the computer its self is great.

I was looking for a great laptop that would be able to respond to all my digital needs and hopefully I found this.

With a 6GB RAM, this laptop can handle everything you could simultaneously. You will love the the extra light weight, you barely feel anything on your lap.

SRS Premium Sound integrated gives you a complete personalization of your sound quality. As on the description, you have a 640GB Hardrive that will hold all your musics, videos, games, movies, etc...

I also found the Intel Turbo Boost Technology very handy when it comes to run heavy programs at the same time, it gives you that extra boost(up to 3Ghz)when you need it.

Bluetooth also integrated (couldn't ask for more). Battery life is pretty decent for a Windows laptop(up to 4hrs on Balanced power plan).

Sleek and professional design.

Webcam can deliver HD videos which is simply amazing.

Finally, the processor is so "robust" that even when you have many programs running at the same time, your CPU usage is usually less than 20%.

Great value for the price, would greatly recommend it to laptop buyers.

I had high hopes for this laptop. I already knew the differences between a chromebook and a typical PC, so no issues there.

I picked up this system from Walm*** a few days ago. The model I purchased also includes 2 years of Tmobile data.

I specifically choose the HP 14" model because of its quality and size. Much better size than the competing 11.5" systems. Also, true to HP, nice quality.

Size, speed, quality, keyboard, trackpad are all great. If I had one negative it would be the lack of lighted keyboard. On the plus side, the system I received has 4 GB ram, so an upgrade from the 2 GB listed on Amazon. This system fits its intended use perfectly.

Now I know why these are called "Chomebooks." You can't do anything that can't be done within a Chrome web browser. This is definitely not a replacement for a laptop, and I was hoping that it would be. It does boot fast, is incredibly light and attractive and has an amazing battery life depending on what you're doing, you can get eight hours or more. But you are limited on what types of files you can open, and you can't put any programs on it. You must use the Google equivalents instead; for example, Google Hangouts instead of Skype, Google Docs instead of Word. You can download web apps, but tablet or Android apps from Google Play will not work.

All that being said, every Chromebook will have those limitations, not just this one. There are some huge benefits to the idea of a Chromebook, too. I'm coming to this laptop after having a MacBook for five years and refusing to get a PC, and it feels very similar to me. The operating system runs very smoothly and is not clunky in any way, and I love it. It's very easy to set up and figure out how to use. Everything you do is backed up to the Google Cloud, so you can access everything anywhere.

If you fully understand what a Chromebook is and that it is NOT an adequate replacement for a laptop if you regularly use anything other than a web browser and word processing, I would highly recommend this one. It's fast, it's light, the screen resolution is great, and it has a much larger screen than many other Chromebooks. The color is really quite pretty, and the soft finish feels great. It also seems to pick up WiFi connections from further away than my old laptop, and I have not had any major issues with pages not loading or videos or video chats lagging. The speakers are on the bottom of the computer, which seems a little strange, but it makes things sound louder when the computer is on a hard surface. I've never felt that it doesn't play loud enough. There is a fan, unlike some other Chromebooks, so it doesn't run silently, but I definitely wouldn't call it loud.

Finally, what sold me on this is that it came with two free years of T-Mobile 4g. I'm not sure if Amazon also offers this deal (I bought it in a store), but it's a great deal for the price.

TLDR? If you need a full-blown laptop with the ability to install programs, this isn't for you. If all you need is a place for Facebook, reading news, taking notes in Google Docs and watching Hulu and Netflix, this is exactly what you're looking for, and it's a great buy.

this chromebook is awesome, its much faster and smother than anticipated, the screen is nice and so is the build materials. the only thing that i actually hated about the hp chromebook 14 was that the color in the picture is deceiving, in the pictures it looks red, but in real life i think its closer to a salmon pink, whits not not what i was expecting at all.

Honest reviews on HP Chromebook 14 (Peach Coral)

I just bought the 4G version of this for fifty more at the local W-Mart. The other big difference between that model and this one is that the version with the roaming T-mobile data plan (free for 2 years) also has 2 GB more memory so theoretically the machine should be faster than the wi-fi only version.

I'll review the things in common however.

Screen: Good size, easy to adjust brightness with dedicated up and down keys at the top of the keyboard (just like Apple). I'm reading that the Chromebook 11 version has a nicer display and that the 11 was actually co-created with Google vs. the 14 which was supposedly designed solely by HP.

Appearance: I got the machine in white. Snow White to be exact. It looks awesome on the kitchen counter. The aluminum cover around the keyboard looks great and reminds me of much more expensive Apple machines. (OK I'll stop mentioning Apple, the whole darn thing reminds me of a $1500 Apple in appearance)

Speakers: I'm listening to Pandora as I type this. Zero bass response but speakers still sound decent for listening to music, but if you want bass, this is NOT the machine for you. There is a headset jack.

Connections: Speaking of jacks, there are two USB ports on the left and one on the right. There's also a HDMI output on the left so you can stream video and audio to your TV.

Usability: No, you can't easily run Microsoft Excel and Outlook on this machine. I've read you can remote into your networked desktop and use them there but I haven't used that. However Gmail and the Google cloud based equivalents of the Office Suite are fine. This machine starts up almost instantly... it's like turning on a phone. You turn it on and moments late you are checking gmail and Facebook and surfing the web.

I wouldn't want this as my only computer as I do need a non-cloud based computer as well, but as an inexpensive mobile computer I find this a great alternative to my iPad at half the cost.

I asked Amazon if they will be selling the 4G version of this and really didn't get a definitive answer but I'm guessing since WM is already "live" with it that they have some sort of an exclusive deal for now.

Also, rumor has it that Toshiba and Asus will be coming out with Chrombooks for the holidays so you might want to wait to see what they offer.

My biggest concern about this model was the 2 GB of memory in the wifi only version... the reviews of other Chromebooks I've read (and I've read dozens) indicate to me that Chrome really operates best with 4 GB if you like to have lots of open tabs.

A great little machine!!!

I just purchased this Chromebook and i would recommend it to any of my family or friends. The battery life is better than any high end laptop i have ever had and due to the very streamlined OS it processes things just as fast as most higher end laptops. The build quality is also very nice equal to laptop around twice the price. If a Chrome OS does what you need than i would recommend this one over all other Chromebooks and most other laptops.

After going through the crash-n-burn of my HP which was only 5 years old and died during the night a week ago, in a flash of angst I bought this Toshiba. It came with Win 7, and although I haven't gotten all my old software loaded yet, everything loaded to this point works without fail.

Pros: lightweight (although I didn't order a big battery as I had before. Turned out a 12 hour battery was only good for 2 or 3 hours anyway, so it was always plugged in. I don't care any more. The 3.6 hr battery is fine.)

Windows 7 pre-loaded beats the Win7 upgrade like night and day. No fun having a better OS if the hardware can't deal with it.

Lightning fast processing

Works with a 10 year old version of Corel WORD PERFECT, the all around BEST word processing program. Win 7 has come like a fresh breeze and now Windows MS Word 2007 is no longer the nightmare it still is under the claws of Win Vista. Still love WordPerfect hands down, but it is obvious that MS Word is trying really hard to be WordPerfect.

Cons: The speakers sound tinny and thin. They ARE tinny and thin... so if you want great sound this isn't your unit or add speakers.

Buttons on the keyboard arrangement is always pivotal when you type as much and fast as I do. Some of them are in odd places. I like the consistency of an add-on keyboard.

Would I buy this again? Yes. Recommend it to friends? Yes.

I'm so delighted with this purchase ($429.99). It comes with Windows 7 Premium Home Edition and 4GB of RAM. The AMD P320 Dual Core Processor is quite fast and plays most games without problems. The 17" backlit LED screen is brilliant and displays a beautiful picture. And if you don't like the monitor on this machine it has an HDMI port to hook up to your HDTV. The full keyboard with number pad on side is an added bonus. But the most enthralling feature of the Toshiba L675-S7015 is the Blu-Ray drive, it plays films and displays gorgeous High Definition video. I love this computer and highly recommend it to anyone in need of an economical notebook with great features.

You are probably not buying a Toughbook for aesthetics, so I will skip that. Or weight and size, so I'll skip those too.

This product works.

We use one at our retail store and its has been dropped, stepped on, and spilled on, and its still going strong. The lack of pre-installed bloatware is refreshing, and it has performed reliably under heavy use. Definitely reccomend to anyone who puts a lot of wear and tear on their computer.

Just got the NP900X3D a couple days ago from Amazon.

Initial impressions: I love it, irritated with a few small items, but it is my new favorite travel computer.

The packaging was great. Three layers of protection: Amazon box with plastic air, Samsung box with foam corners inside, and then a very hard, elegant notebook box with foam inside.

Since I've only had it a few days, I'll keep the review short for now:

Good things:

++ The matte screen is gorgeous. I'm sitting in the kitchen next to an open window with the sunlight pouring in, and it looks just fine. Really good, in fact. My mother-in-law is sitting beside me with an Asus that has a reflective screen. Ouch! The glare from her notebook smacked me in the face. The screen on the Sammy is awesome.

++ Super skinny and light. This is replacing my daily notebook, a lightweight (3.94 lbs) Asus that I thought was very portable. Hah! The Sammy blows it away.

++ Elegant and refined look and feel.

Irritating things:

-Storage space. OMG. Over half is gone on arrival. Do they really need 4 different recovery partitions? One of which consumes 25 GB? At first I was shocked, but I've mellowed a little now. Just a little. I've created a backup image (which is a little tricky to find in Windows 8), and may consider blowing away this build. Or upgrading to a 256 GB drive, like the M4 mSATA from Crucial.

-Wifi and automatic brightness. Neither worked well out of the box. But, after running the Samsung SW Update (all apps, Samsung section), it seems fine now. Thinking about it, most new computers need to be fine-tuned and updated when you get them, so this doesn't bother me too much.

Well, that's my initial impressions. I'm completely new to Windows 8, and at first found it quite strange. But the more I play with it, the more I see advantages. I get both the desktop and an app interface. And there are definitely some cool apps out there. Windows 8 starts out in more of a sharing layout than I personally like, but that's just customization, and we all do that.

Update 5/6/2013:

* Tried it outside on the porch and the screen worked great on a sunny day.

* Installed 10 GB of pictures and MS Office. I'll probably load another 10 GB in music, and then one or two movies. I guess everything will fit fine for now. Maybe I wanted more elbow room than I need.

* Still having intermittent problems with wifi connectivity. It works most the time, but occasionally drops out. My router is in the basement, so it may be that the signal is only fair.

* Registering with Samsung added 3 months to the warranty. I know, a pittance, but better than nothing. Brings it up to 15 months.

Update 8/25/2013:

* Bottom line I still love this laptop, and it's staying with me.

* Wifi There are several Ultrabook models that have a problematic Intel wifi card, and this model is one of them. The Intel Centrino Advanced N-6235 wifi card can cause connections issues and dropouts. Intel is supposedly working on a driver fix. Mine works fine after de-installing the Intel ProSet Suite, but YMMV. Important point: If you are not comfortable changing software drivers, then I would NOT recommend this notebook for you. That was hard to say, because I really like this notebook.

* It does get a little warm on the lap after a while.

* I have 20 GB of free space after loading all my files, apps, music, videos, pictures, and several movies. And like many people, I have a lot of pictures and music.

I researched all the latest lightweight laptops to replace an aging Acer 12" Netbook. Needed something to travel with and use around the house. Wanted a 6+hour battery, 3 lbs or less and 13" screen. This 13" ultrabook is almost 1/2 lb lighter at 2.5 lbs than my older netbook and weighs the same as my wife's Ipad with keyboard. The screen is very bright and sharp. Computer is quiet and sleek looking, Macbook Air imitation. Battery is good for 6-8 hours. Computer boots up in seconds with the 128GB SSD. Wish it had a 256 GB SSD but 128GB will do the job and is a lot more than the Ipad offers. I did not like the Windows 8 interface so installed a simple app that replicated Windows 7 menu on startup. This computer should last me for another 5+ years.

Best Deals for Samsung Series 9 NP900X3D-A04US 13.3-Inch Premium Ultrabook (Silver)

LOVE the form of this laptop sleek and lightweight! I like the back lighting of the keyboard. I wish that the volume controls and screen brightness were not controlled by the Fn keys requiring 2 hands to control, though.

As others have mentioned, there ARE issues with the wireless adapter and touchpad. If you believe your Windows based laptop should run perfectly out of the box stay away from this laptop. I knew going into this purchase that there were problems and decided to gamble on my being able to address them. I am reasonably comfortable doing this, but not a techie. With the help of the Samsung support, I have reinstalled/updated the drivers for the wireless adapter (x3) and touchpad. The adapter appears to be OK now, the touchpad continues to annoy, refusing to work when the computer is restored from "sleep" mode. Because the reboot is so fast, this is only annoying not unworkable. Also, the default power settings required adjustment and often revert back to default not sure why.

All in all, for me the form of the chassis and other design features make this a great little laptop as a road warrior. The frustration factor of the above, though, does not allow me to recommend this as a "buy" without some reservation.

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 9 NP900X3D-A04US 13.3-Inch Premium Ultrabook (Silver)

Once you set up the windows 8 look and feel the way you wanted and disable some of the actions of the touchpad, it works great. Bootup from powerup or sleep is sooooo fast. This thing is so thin and yet sturdy. Screen is awesome! Anti-glare screen, awesome, may be the only highend ultrabook with anti-glare screen. I absolutely hate glossy screen. Most windows 8 apps are low quality and very few decent ones. Touchpad works fine for desktop apps, but some windows 8 apps are a little flacky with the touchpad.

Recovery saved me a few times. Some old software do not work properly and would not uninstall and will cause repeated pop up error msg in Windows 8. The only way out for me was to use "Recovery" app to bring my system back to the previous state. It works remarkably well. So I would say SSD space allocated for Recovery is a must have if you ever corrupt your system unintentionally.
