I have this exact laptop which I use on a regular basis. I got it from Dell.com for 200 dollars cheaper than it is on amazon. However I had to go through and delete alot of spam stuff from it the day I bought it because it was so stuffed with ads and what not that the computer had a hard time running. It would freeze up trying to pop up all the crap that they want you to buy. Other than that it's a great laptop. I've been using it for a year now and I haven't found any problems. But you can find it cheaper at

I love this machine. It's a big improvement over the Dell laptop I was previously using, which I shipped to my grade school age nieces and nephews. Lot's power and storage space, but like all new products, it is skimpy on Microsoft software. Luckily I was able to add the products i needed and can upgrade to the next level when I want to.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i17RN-5647BK 17-Inch Laptop (Black)

When buying a new laptop, the first thing I do is either reload the OS or immediately begin uninstalling all of the extra programs and trial software that come on installed on the laptop out of the box. With all of the standard software Dell loads on their image it runs slower than it should. I'll never understand why these companies do this, it adversely affects the user's experience when their computer runs slow. You would think they would get that, but they continue to overload you with extra software and trial versions of stuff you don't need/want. Plus, Dell installs McAfee products. My experience is that McAfee software tends to be a resource hog and always seems to conflict with some piece of software I install now and then. They also have a habit of releasing AV definitions that crash Windows. I have used Symantec for many years and never had the issues I have had with McAfee products. Sorry McAfee... gotta go. So I go to the hardware list and write down the drivers for things like audio, video, network, touch-pad, Bluetooth, USB 3.0, web cam, etc. Then I go to their site and download them. After reloading the OS and installing the drivers, this laptop screamed!

I use it for recording music with an 8-input interface for drums. Lots of plugins for audio effects and mixing. My software couldn't run when installed on the standard Dell image that came with the laptop. After reloading it runs like the laptop was made for this software. I've had this laptop for three months now and haven't had a single issue since reloading. Note: Dell usually doesn't send the recovery disk anymore, they only send you one if there's a hard drive issue. But even after reloading with a recovery disk, you usually have to go to their website and download some drivers to finish the reload.

Another note: I bought the 15" version of this laptop and the touch-pad buttons are silent but the keys click louder. With this 17" version, the keys are silent but the touch-pad buttons are loud. Go figure. All the reasons above are why I gave this laptop 4 instead of 5 stars.

I am really pleased with this laptop. The webcam is good, the keyboard is well sized, but I don't like the placement of the screenshot button. I'll reach up for the backspace key, and hit screenshot too often. It's annoying. Anyway, the only other thing that I didn't like is the touchpad. It works fine, but just didn't please me as much as the one on my acer. It was worth it for what I paid.

I've been using my ct14-a2 Vizio computer for several weeks now and have uncovered a serious flaw: the keyboard. Pressing the keys often gives you ss insteadd of s, or aa instead of a and sometimes the key simply does not do anything at all. I have contacted Vizio Support a half dozen times, but their simplistic "fixxes" do nothing(note doublee x and e) Several Online reviewers have commented on this pproblem.

Vizio has an apparent design/production problem. It is something that people such as myself, who rely on the computer for income, simply ccannot live with. I'm tryig to get resolution. I urge Vizio to come out with an update soon, PLEEZE???

Would I recommend the Vizio? No becausee of the keyboard prroblemss. And no, I did NOT manually addd the double letters the computer did it all by itself!

I really hate to write a negative revview of Vizio: I have two of theirr TV sets with no problems at all. And the ct14 computer is a work of art but, like a beautiful woman with a grating voice, it's nearly impossible to live with. Please if you must buy a Vizio ct14 wait until the second generation comes out??? You will thank me and a lot of other frustrated Vizio computer users.

I've been thinking about buying an ultrabook in order to bring it to my university in my backpack without having a heavy weight computer. Probably most people would buy one with something related with it.

After googling infos and ultrabooks benchmarks, I found a very interesting one that, it said, comparing with all ultrabook models, the only one that came closest to Macbook Air (in performance) was this one Vizio Thin + Light

I came to Amazon and ordered one. After getting my hands on it, I realized how beautiful it is, light and well designed [external beauty huh?].

Some pros:

Nice display

boots very quickly

lightweight

battery duration is average

Cons:

trackpad is a pain. When I first used it, I realized it had real problems, for example, when I have to aim correct to a link and have to move my finger slowly, the cursor simply doesn't move. The precision is very, very bad. I tried to update my trackpad driver, but it stills very bad

ssd hd is slow

sometimes I get bluescreen in my Windows when it goes to sleep or have something related with power management. Kinda weird.

keyboard keys are a bit strange and it doesn't have keys like "Page Up, Page Down, Pause/Break" and so forth

Honestly, if I could get my money back, I would do it for sure.

Conclusion: I'm disappointed with the product and I would recommend other models.

Honest reviews on VIZIO Thin and Light CT14-A2 14-Inch Laptop

Bought this to use in bed while I'm ill main reason was light weight & solid state drive.

Pro's: light & fast & no bloatware

Cons: keyboard not lit and keys hard to see (no contrast); no Home key & awkward Delete key placement

" Needs a couple more USB ports

" Needs a port for hard-wired internet cable

" wish I'd got something with built-in DVD drive

(But I suppose it would be quite a bit heavier with this stuff on! oh well ...)

Otherwise OK

Having used this laptop for about 2 hours now, I can say I am happy with my purchase. This laptop is a great price for what you get compared to the rest of the market. However, the two things I dislike about this ultrabook is the trackpad which kind of sucks (I've done the update) and the fan at times can act up. But I love the screen resolution, design and portability.

I just purchased this computer for my girlfriend, and so far she loves it. I personally don't really like Windows 8 yet, especially when using the touchpad, but that is Microsoft's problem. The computer is fast, durable, and has a good sized screen. Perfect for her, as she mainly uses it for e-mail, movies, homework, and Pinterest. One thing to note is that the touchpad has quite a texture to it. Its a little awkward and doesn't have perfect touch response, and I foresee the pits collecting grime after a while. Overall, a great computer for the price!

The battery charge is good for users who travel. The keyboard is a tad funky. It will take some getting used to. Overall good product. I would purchase again.

I'll start by saying this is a review of the product NOT the operating system (Windows 8)

Screen Has a really nice size and very nice resolutionIt's clear and only has distortion at odd screen angles.

SoundIt lacks a bit and stays on the low side making it difficult to watch movies

KeyboardIt's amply spaced but a bit bouncy, almost like it's not installed correctly, but it is, it's just a loose fit.

USB3, and comfortable

Touchpadis textured, it takes a bit of getting used to but after a little you don't notice it.

appearanceit's just a laptop, there are no pretty lights or smooth finishes, no fancy colors or bells.

WeightEasy enough to carry around, but it's still a 5 pound laptop.

I like the machine, it's perfect for email, internet, pictures and netflix. It's low priced because it's just an entry level machine.

I'm a recent college graduate and this was laptop was meant to replace my old one as something for work and just lounging around. Overall, it ended meeting all of my expectations.

PROs:

-The screen is massive and the resolution is really nice

-The full keyboard and number pad, to include keys for screen brightness, play, rewind/forward, sound, and wifi.

-So far has run everything I've thrown at it, inluding Chrome with 15 tabs, and some games with medium-level graphics

-Boot-up is very quick

-Initial set-up is very easy and it goes from the original box to being used in about 7 minutes

-The textured feel to the laptop makes it seem much more durable.

-There's a built-in webcam. It has pretty bad quality, but a really large scope, so you can fit a lot of stuff into view.

-Windows 8, while not my favorite OS, has a lot of built in software that can be useful (think apps on your laptop) once you start to get used to it. Then again, they take up a lot of memory and could be downloaded from the internet just as easily.

CONs:

-The keyboard is a little "sticky" sometimes. I have to push my 'A' and 'C' keys a little harder than the others for them to work, making it a little noisier and slower to type.

-Since the mousepad has a textured-feel to it, it's jumpy until you start to get used to it. Easily fixed with a USB mouse.

-The placement of the external inputs is a little weird. It seems like they put everything on the sides in an effort to keep the computer a little slimmer. This is most noticeable with the power cord, which is on the left side. All of my sockets are on the right side, so it is constantly turning the computer. The USB, headphone/mic jacks, internet hardline, and external monitor inputs are all on the right side, front too, so they very easily get in the way when you have any of them hooked up.

-The CD tray feels very flimsy and strange. When you open it, it is slow to spring open, then feels very weak and is kind of hard to grip because of the curved outside.

-Software. Namely Windows 8 and Norton Security. I understand that it isn't part of the computer, but the OS is a little hard to get used to and runs a TON of background applications (including Norton) that slow down your computer A LOT at first.

-The speakers are horrible. I normally don't care about sound at all, but it is bad enough that I notice. Not as bad with movies as with music.

Bottom line: Great computer for the price. Any problems with the laptop are easily fixable (mouse, keyboard) or you get used to (Windows 8, general layout, etc.). If you're looking for a laptop just for work or for browsing the internet, this is your laptop. If you're trying to run really extensive software or games, you need something with a little more power.

Well, this is my first time doing a review on here, but becuase of how few reviews I have been able to find on this laptop, I figured I should share my thoughts on it.

First off, the packaging was amazing! You can tell they really took their time when designing the way this product would be shipped and opened for first use.

The look and feel of this laptop is also really good. It feels really strong and not made out of some cheap materials. I love how it comes with ZERO stickers on the laptop that display what is it in. The laptop is very sleek and clean looking. I also love the custom theme that it is for Windows 7. It is also very simple and clean. It is a LOT better than the default windows 7 theme. The keyboard is also very well made and I love the backlighting.

However, this amazing laptop also has some flaws that I wish I knew about BEFORE purchasing this item. I had no idea that the other Envy products (Envy 15 for example), suffer from black or blank screen problems! At random (normally when the computer is sitting without being used for a short time) the screen will just fade to black. If you look really hard from certain angles you can see the desktop, but its so dark you cannot shut down the computer. This also happens nearly 100% of the time when you close the screen and return to your computer after a short time. From what I have read online, the only "fix" for this is to close the screen again or hold the power button until it restarts. Also, HP does not seem to see this has a problem with the computer, however just google HP envy 17 Black Screen and you will see all the issues people are having with this. HP just seems to replace the computers. Hopefully a fix will come out soon, but nobody can seem to figure out what causes this issue.

Another problem I have been having is the random freezing. I will be doing nothing no downloads, no music playing, just simply sitting at the desktop and the computer will freeze. Again, the only fix for this is to hold down the power button until it turns off. Also, this issue is like the black screen problem. I have not found anybody that has been able to pinpoint the cause of this problem to get it fixed.

Finally, the last problem is the heat! Man does this thing produce heat. It could heat up a house in the winter! With only ONE vent in the side of the computer that is in a really poor location, this thing is hard to cool down. I had to purchase a massive cooling pad to help keep it cool. Also, the place that seems to heat up the worst is to the left of the mousepad (which sucks as well) which if you are a gamer, that is not a good location. You will be resting your palm here to use the WASD keys for many of the games and your hand will get extremely hot.

Overall, I really want to like this computer, but with the issue I am having, I don't know if I will be keeping it or returning it to Amazon. If I can figure out a fix for the random black screens or freezes, I will keep it since I can deal with the heat now that it has a pad. However, the random freezing and the black screens are a deal breaker for a laptop that costs SO much money. You would think that since the black screen problem was a major issue with the Envy 15 that they would have fixed it for the Envy 17, but like I said, HP does not seem to see this as a problem.

EDIT: Well I have been dealing with HP support through e-mail and they are being anything but helpful at this point. Sure they reply to e-mails EXTREMELY fast for such a major company, but you can tell all their answers are canned replies that have already been typed and they simply copy and paste. For example, in the last e-mail from them, they gave me the instructions to do something on my computer for Windows XP...did they even check to see what the heck the laptop was?!?! Does HP even have laptops that have XP on them anymore? So far, after three e-mail messages and tons of research online, none of the problems I mentioned in the first review have been fixed. Buy at your own risk, but HP doesn't seem to understand the problems people are having with this machine.

Out of the box this machine is extraordinary, The packaging alone tells you, you just bought a different type of laptop(very high end) perfectly packed with a couple of very nice extras(nothing big but I won't spoil the surprise)if you like bells and whistles this laptop has them all, aluminum case and the look of the etching is incredible and feels really solid (which is very good, having seen broken or bent motherboards and screens due to flimsy cases) beautiful LED screen, chicklet type illuminated keys, slot load BD player, extra long lasting battery...the works. Ok performance. Turning it on I was amazed by how quick this machine is and I have been around PCs and laptops all teen-adult life so I can tell you, you won't be disappointed. specs are up on the product description, but they are MISSING the best parts. This is a new i7 2.0 GHz processor (CPU) and it is quad core (4 CPU in one) BUT! with "hyper-threading" so if you don't speak geek what it means is that you virtually have (and you will see in your task manager) 8 (eight) 2.0 GHz processors running simultaneously this is awesome. Now to me the most important missing spec is that this is a HM65 chipset, what this means is that it comes available with blazing fast SATA 3 hard drive interface..in all my latest laptops this has been the performance bottleneck even with an SSD hard drive (downside, the laptop comes with 2 500Gb SATA 2 Hard drives. upside they come in RAID 0(you will see just one big disk on your explorer), which is a lot faster than normal setups.)but if you want the extra performance of SATA 3 you will have to buy a new HD. Last thing it has great battery life due to the double video card, so, on power saver, low performance video card and dimmed screen, I can get up to 3 hrs with the 6 cell battery. OK for us geeks that can't leave well enough alone...the laptop comes with 4gb + 2Gb RAM very bad! so BUY 8Gb RAM package and a SSD HD that is SATA 3 compatible (and a SSUSB (or USB 3.0) external enclosure to put the extra HD once your done), you will have to do a new windows install so download your drivers from HP except the SSUSB this one download it from a HP probook which is the same driver but newer and better (don't know why), and an updated video driver...I can't start to tell you how fast this machine turns out! by now you can see that I like computers, this one blew mi mind and I haven't over clocked it yet...hope this helps...long winded and all.

Best Deals for HP ENVY 17-2070NR Notebook Computer - Silver

I just got the HP 2070NR to use as a development work station. So far I've been extremely happy with the purchase.

I have my 2070 running XUbuntu 11.04 AMD64. There were a few quirks specific to this laptop (that will probably effect anyone using Linux on it regardless of distro), one of which is the "click-pad" and the other of which is the hybrid graphics card. I had to patch and build a new package to get the track pad working correctly, but it wasn't really a big deal so I'm not deducting a star for it. You can find that answer on bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/582809 (#144). The other thing is you don't want to use fglrx (proprietary drivers) on it, as fglrx does not work with vgaswitcheroo (the Linux kernel facility for switching graphics cards) yet... I'm sure AMD will come out with a fix for it eventually, but for the moment only the opensource radeon drivers work.

Other than fglrx not working and the touchpad behaving weird, everything on this laptop worked out of the box on Ubuntu (wireless, wired network card, sound, even the web cam).

One thing I wanted to note about the two hard drives is they come configured in a Raid0 configuration and the array controller only supports Raid0 (no raid1/mirrored). I had kind of been hoping to mirror my hard drives with a hardware controller... But that isn't really a big deal either because what other laptop comes with 2 hard drives and an array controller?

I'm really happy with this laptop so far. I've had it for 3 days now, and it's definitely a huge step up over my previous laptop. I can run Netbeans, Eclipse, Jboss, Banshee, and a VirtualBox without any problems... This laptop had everything I was looking for in a laptop specs wise, and then some.

As far as battery life:

If you use the 6-cell battery, and aren't doing anything too intense, it should get close to 2 hours.

If you use the 9-cell battery and aren't doing anything too computationally intense, it'll be closer to 3.5.a)

That isn't really amazing battery life for a laptop, but when you consider what a monster this thing is, 17 in display, 2x 7200 RPM drives, i7 quad, discreet graphics, it does a bit better than what I'd expect. I have to give them credit, they built a machine designed to behave much like a desktop, and it still has a usable battery.

As far as build quality goes:

I've always been an HP fan, but I've always hated the pavilion and other home computers. I've always bought the business laptops and workstations. I have to say, HP has addressed a lot of the problems I've had with the pavilions and some of their other home computers being crappy computers. This computer is built like one of their business models, and not only that it's really nice looking. It performs really well, has great hardware, and was at a much more desirable price point than some of their other offerings.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY 17-2070NR Notebook Computer - Silver

Very, very well packaged. The unit is very sleek and it runs very quietly. Backlit Keyboard was just what I wanted. Very good. The Display was great.

But upon first use, this unit would freeze up and not respond to any commands. I had to turn the power off using the Power Button. Then upon turning it on again it would run for a few hours (or sometimes a only few minutes) then freeze up again. I had to recycle the power button to get it back on.

HP Customer Service was very courteous (and they spoke English). I talked with them 4 or 5 times in the first fews days after receiving the PC, they seemed to know what they were doing and I got the same department each time I called. They even called ME back to see how I was doing. (The technicians I spoke with knew the other technicians I had spoken to, so I didn't have to keep explaining the problem over and over again)

But everything we tried failed to fix the problem. HP finally suggested returning the unit. Thinking the problem was hardware vs. software.

I did send the unit back to Amazon. Amazon offered me an exchange or my money back. Amazon has good customer service also.

So if you get a unit that freezes up at any time, make sure you call HP for help. They told me this was not an uncommon problem but new HP BIOS usually fixes the bug. (They also said my unit may have set on the shelf for a while, and that newer units come with the newer version BIOS)

HP Customer Service was the BEST customer support I have ever had to use.. too bad the unit wasn't as good..

Hp Envy 17-2070nr. So far I believe its an amazing laptop. Havent had a single problem, its extremely fast and it came flawless. Hopefully I will not have any problems in the future but if I do I will update.

It did took me a few minutes to get used to the trackpad, but got used to it.

I was afraid of buying because I could not find any reviews but I am glad I took the risk.

edit:

I had some issues with it freezing, supposedly the culprit was the wireless card, but I simply did a clean install of Windows 7 from the partition recovery, and the problem seems to be fixed. i brought it down to four because i shouldn't have to be fixing a brand new computer specially a 1400 dollar computer, but i did because i really love the feel and performance of the computer.

Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. This is the most attractive notebook I've ever owned. Someone across the room heard a music video I was watching and said "that computer has great sound." It is great to have my numeric keypad back for crunching numbers.

Mobile broadband and 16GB flash drive USBs worked as expected. So did WiFi and a hardwired network. The 17.3" video is just awesome. This is my second, larger, notebook and I'll never go smaller again.

Very satisfied, great price and fast, free shipping from Amazon.

But not from Best Buy. My other laptop suffered some kind of disease and we're away from home, so I opted for a "cheap" replacement. 4 gigs of Ram (!!) and room for 4 more and a 320 gig hard drive are among the things that make this an outstanding buy. It's BIG and that's either it's strength, if you want a big screen and full size keyboard AND keypad; or it's weakness if you like small........

I'm a great fan of Amazon, but before you buy this gem, you might want to run over to your nearest Office Depot it's currently on sale for about a hundred bucks less........

This laptop has impressed me so far. Not only is it inexpensive, but it seems solidly built. It is very quiet. The screen is huge and looks great. It is powerfully enough for all of my home PC needs. The only 2 negatives are the weak sound quality (not unexpected in a laptop) and the touchpad buttons, which make a noticeable clicking noise when you press them. If you can live with those minor annoyances, I recommend considering this laptop for your home PC.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7005 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

I was first looking at smaller sub-notebooks in the 11.6" 12.1" screen range. However, after trying that size out in a store, I realized 12" was an incredibly small screen. This laptop's screen is amazing. The size is perfect, the brightness is excellent, and the colors are vivid. Windows 7 Home Premium runs very well (you can tell the AMD dual-core processor helps with multi-tasking). Incredibly, even with a 17.3" screen, the laptop is very light and portable. The full keyboard with numeric pad is a great addition.

The only downside to the laptop is that it does not include HDMI out. This was disappointing considering that the screen is an HD display. It does, however, include VGA out, plenty of USB ports, memory card slot, and an SATA port.

If you are looking for a budget friendly large screen laptop, I would certainly suggest the Toshiba L555D-S7005. Also, there is a similar size/processor Gateway laptop in the same price range. However, before deciding on the Gateway, you should compare the customer service and warranties between Toshiba and Gateway. Toshiba definitely wins in this category. Gateway was bought out by Acer in 2007 and they are still getting their act together internally.

I've had this computer for almost three years. About two years into it it developed the heating issue that others have complained about it began shutting down at unpredictable intervals; usually when I had the CPU running at full capacity. I did some research and discovered that the problem was dust. Namely poor cooling design causes the computer to take dust inside and over time it makes it hard for the computer to release heat properly. I took it to a computing center and got them to open it up and clear out the dust I'd long since been off warranty.

I also went out and dropped 20 dollars on an extrernal antec laptop fan. It's the kind of fan that you sit your computer on and it operates more silently than the toshiba fan. Together with a regular vaccuming of the actual laptop fan to suck out any dust I haven't had a problem since then. I'm going to take it in again in a month or two to get the dust cleared out BEFORE I start having problems again.

So I know what you're thinking...why the 4 stars? I paid less than 1200 bucks for this machine. A dell machine of similar price would be falling apart in many, many, more critical ways (I should know I used to work in a computer lab), and compaq's/hps are infinitely worse machines. It's speedy, I've had absolutely no connectivity problems with the wifi (I've used over a dozen different wifi connections and I often have a stronger connection than my friends), ditto with the LAN...I've used the modem precisely once so I can't comment on that.

I've put a total of 70 dollars worth of service into this machine. You put way more money into a car to maintain it. A computer is a complicated piece of machinery...I don't understand people who think that they can buy it and not have to do anything to allow it to keep operating in peak condition.

Does this computer have it's flaws? Yes. But for it's price it's a good value. I wouldn't buy a Honda and expect a Mercedes.

i have had this laptop for 3 years now, and during the 1 year company warranty and 3 year with compusa, i had the WORST cooling problem...like the other users on this review forum, I had to ice the heat sinc in order to keep my laptop from shutting off abruptly (note folks that this is a security for your computer, if it continues to increase in temperature while it remains on, your hardware may be destroyed due to intense heat)...thus i had compusa replace the whole cooling system...it was a breeze and on a couple occasion had it it abruptly shut down on its own with the new cooling plates (for the new users without a warranty, the best way to maintain the cooling system is to blow straight into the exhaust while holding a damp cloth up to the fan screen, thus you will catch all the dust build-up)...also while i had my laptop hanging from my shoulder, my mustang door came swinging back at me knocking my laptop to the ground causing the hard driv to fail....this is typcial once excessive shock has been encountered...i simply had this replaced...for the next year and a half i had no problems and with all the things filed such as my library of 1500+ songs and music videos i still havnt filled up the lovely 60GB HDD...it is however as we call it today, a good desktop replacement according to its weight...its weight is on the rim btwn laptops that stay at home and laptops you can lug around at school...lately however iv been using a 3rd party ac adaptor and my ground needle snapped off...eventually i believe the temporary solder work i did to charge the unit caused the lcd backlight to short...after much research NOTE* even though your power jack supply is fused to the motherboard, you can have someone professionally un-solder that jack and replace it with another one at (which is about $25)...and if you can spot what has caused your backlight to go out like mine, (connections, lcd, bulb, etc) generailly it is bound to be the whole screen...all you need to do is go to a site like and they will provide you a brand new screen (with available extra options like XBRITE in sync with the tech today)for roughly around $250 $300 brand new... USERS if u made the investment already, take care of it because regardless of TOSHIBA having great technology the only downer is that their parts and durabilty are not necessarily the strongest...in comparison to the new line of Sony Vaio Laptops my A35 is just one big peice of powerful plastic...if u refuse to do repairs there are companies wherein you can sell your computer and they will buy it off you for the good parts...I FOR ONE AM IN NO FINANCIAL POSITION TO GET UP AND REPLACE THE WHOLE THING ESPECIALLY WITH THE NEW COOLING SYSTEM AND HARD DRIVE...it has served me strong for the past 3 YEARS in MOVIE MAKING for school, music promotion, web-design, church-sermon audio recording/digital and many work and school related tasks, so far everything else is good for another couple years...thnx

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 Laptop (2.30-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM

I've had my AS35-S159 for close to 8 years with almost no problems. I did encounter the overheating issue at some point and all it required was vacuuming off some of the dust and cat hair trapped in the cooling unit. My wife went through 2 laptops (HP, DELL) during the same time.

What sets this laptop apart is stability, I can have 3-4 programs running at once and it never crashes. I will definitely stick with Toshiba for my next laptop whenever that may be.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 Laptop (2.30-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM

I bought this computer about a year ago and like one of the previous owners, I had a problem with it shutting down for no reason. I found after sending it out to get serviced that the CPU fan went bad and when it overheated, it shut down. I like the keyboard feel and the display is good in comparision to my older Toshiba laptop. I wish that it had more USB ports and expansion, but the ability to load it up with 2 gig of ram is a plus. The battery life is good too.

Bought mine through a major computer retailer (now selling on-line only)over 5 years ago and couldn't be any happier with my Toshiba A-35.

Not a speed demon, but solid and dependible.

The overheating issues have been grossly over stated by a few noisy users. A little care and proper handling/storage and use of this little box and it is happy to perform.

I'm writing this as a testament to Toshiba's quality and reliability. The A-35 is no longer available but Toshiba still continues to make the soundest, best built and nost dependible laptops. Period.

I worked at Microsoft for 4 years, and when I was ready to buy a laptop, I asked around. Engineers, technicians, developers, Program Managers unanimously told me to 'Buy a Toshiba!'. So I did. Good advice.

Toshiba has listened to the marketplace and added more USB ports to subsequent models. The touchpad has improved.

Buy on price point if you dare, but you can't go wrong forking over a few more bones to buy Toshiba's solid dependibility.

I've just gone from XP :-) to VISTA :-( & now to WIN 8 :-/ totally by-passing WIN 7. I'm still getting used to the finger-sensitive mouse pad, but don't let that discourage you from trying WIN 8; the integrated mouse pad is really a stellar design. Its really no different than using your fingers to navigate an iPhone screen. Like with anything new, you hafta' read-up, do your homework & finally put your own hands on it & play around with it a little bit. Yeah, I was slow to take-off with it at first, but within 2 weeks, I can now navigate all my screens (Apps, Desktop, Internet, etc.) with ease. Props to HP for the laptop features (3 USB, 1 LAN, Web-cam WITH built-in MIC, SD slot, 1 HDMI port, 4G RAM, etc.). For the price you pay, you more than get your money's worth. The 'Winter-Blue' color scheme with inside/outside 'hp' logo is eye-catching as well as refreshing from the normal, run-of-the-mill basic 'black-on-black' color scheme so often found on laptops. Bravo HP 2000 series!

This laptop caught our attention with its reasonable price. Usually a low priced machine is missing some key components. This laptop met the specifications we needed. We wanted a work machine and it does that well, along with being a nice looking machine. It is not the smallest or lightest out there but it is fully equipped to work. After two months of daily use it has proven to be our workhorse. It has all we need for office work and can be carried when needed. We were not planning to go with the HP brand, but the price, looks, and specifications convinced us.

I like this laptop. The windows eight would not be my first choice if I were to buy another it would not be with the windows eight. There weren't any manuals with it either which I find odd. I would have liked instruction books. The library has a nice book for those that have not used the windows eight before. There really is more to the windows that what I will use. Also It does not have a words program installed and requires one purchased separately which was an unexpected expense. Still it seems like a great buy to me.

I ordered this lap top for my son who is a freshman in college. He was truly excited to receive it. I looked up so many other laptops with these features in the department stores and they ranged anywhere from $700$1,200.00. This was well within my budget and I am happy that we can use the webcam to see him considering he is so far away. Love it!!!! I would recommend it.

If you are serious about buying a laptop and you want quality for a good price, then this is the laptop for you. I find the Sony FXA47 to be an excellent laptop from the start. The Sony software included is handy. I bought the 48-Mo. warranty extension from Circuit City, so I don't feel any need to be concerned. Most importantly, the battery lasts the full three hours as promised in the manual. This is good for travel, even though it is heavy. I find that the included weight saver makes no sense if it only saves you 0.4 lbs. Performance on this laptop was a little slow when I first started using it, but after a few days of use it seems to speed up in performance. The DVD/CD-RW is a bit noisy and makes the laptop shake, so that might not be a convenience for business travelers on planes. Overall, a good laptop, w/a few glitches here and there. Definitely good for home/office users, but travelers might certainly want to look at something else less heavy and w/o a noisy cd player.

The Sony VAIO PCG-FXA47 offers a great combination of features, rubber-to-the-road performance and affordability for the home user who wants the freedom of a laptop. The DVD/CD-RW drive drew me in, and the fast processor and generous memory sold me. The 20GB hard drive should be plenty for almost everyone (documents/photos/Quicken), although a user editing digital movies might have to think twice. This laptop comes with 10/100 NIC, so DSL connectivity is a snap. The software shipped with mine was also very useful. Note that it comes with serial & parallel ports as well as 2 USB ports, so connection to your peripherals is also convenient. The price is very good considering all you get. All in all, a good deal!

The FXA47 is a sleek machine and when it works, it is wonderful.

I run a number of machines with XP and all perform better than this laptop, especially my Dell laptop.

The FXA47 hangs repeatedly when using standard programs such as the microsoft office family. Frequent crashing makes the computer nearly useless.

This is my second FXA47; the first was replaced due to these same problems to no avail. Beware!

HP sent me a defective screen on my new HP laptop. I requested them to replace the computer and they asked me to take a quick-ship model at a higher price. In addition, I have to pay for it first at a higher price with lower specs!! I asked for the manager and they rejected me saying they are busy.

I have bought 4 HP Pavilions over the last 10 years and this is how they repay me. If there are no problems, I am sure HP is fine. The real problem is if there is something wrong and you are stuck with their customer support. After 10 years, I am going with another brand. I have also spent 80 minutes on the phone with no avail.

I have put a similar comment on their HP website. Do you know they exclude the 1-star and 2-star comments from the consumers?!?! Therefore, I thought it is only fair for the consumers to know. If there is something wrong and you have to deal with their customer support, you will literally get the short-end of the stick. Therefore, you should think twice before purchasing from HP.

I have wasted two days of my life dealing them and now I am investing a full-day going through all the HP e-commerce sites to let the consumers know. Good luck with your purchase with HP.....

Screen clarity could be better (compared to a Vaio.)

HP ENVY 14-2130NR Notebook PC GrayI bought an envy 14 in April 2011 for my son who was going to college, the screen went dead in less then a year, I personally shipped it back for repair under warranty. When I got it back and powered on and it did not boot. I then found out that the internal hard drive was gone. I could not boot the laptop, of course nor verify if hp fixed the screen. I'm no an expert about laptop, so I called hp again,, after two days of trying, A case manager finally talked to me, and yet he accused me that I took out the hd myself before I shipped the laptop to them. I did not even know before where the hd was on this laptop, and I also questioned him if I already had one, why would I need another INTERNAL hd for my envy? He said I could sell it. I was so pissed by accused of cheating $100 hard drive. I have 2 laptops and one desktop from hp in my house, I'm so sure that I won't buy any products from hp ever again.

Later, HP sent me a hard drive w/o charges, but no bracket and no screws (I don't have them because hp service removed the hd on machince), after one more shipping, I finally install the hd and after 3 hour of loading os and all the services. I shipped this laptop to my son in college, a couple of week, the screen started blinking again. No, they did not fix the original screen problem, now my son in college has to deal with them directly. No, I'll never buy another hp computers again.

[Update 2]

Another update, another screwup, this time when the laptop came back, they did not return the charger cable my son told me. I would have given hp zero star if I could.

[Update 3]

After 3 repairs, this same problem came back again. I wonder what kind of company hp is running?? I understand any products could have problems, I'm ok if they could fix the problem. but....., a $800 laptop used for less than 2 years?? and what laughable is, Envy is supposed to be a better line of products, hp was thinking they could use Envy line to compete with Apple MBP?? No more hp products for my family for sure.

Honest reviews on HP ENVY 14-2070NR 14.5-inch Notebook PC - Silver

This machine has a lot going for it. The SSD drive puts it ahead of most of the competition given the price. I've owned an Envy 15 in the past and I can tell most of the kinks were worked out.

My only two issues: Screen and Switchable graphics.

Screen I knew the Brightview screen had been criticized, but the resolution is the industry standard for this size laptop. Still, something better would make this laptop pop.

Switchable graphics I can't tell it's actually switching over as I've noticed some reduced frame rates compared to my older Envy 15.

All-in-all, I still haven't found anything that beats this Envy for the value it provides

I am writing this view as a consumer who was once very loyal to HP products. This HP Envy is my fifth HP laptop.

While none of my other HPs were perfect, I did appreciate HP's customer service. Of course this was not perfect either, but I'll start off with the good. The exterior design of this laptop is appealing to the eyes. I like to keep my laptop clean and in good condition so the chicklet keyboard is also a plus for me. However, these features are not enough as I need a reliable and working computer. I do like HP's customer service as compared to other companies.

In the past, when my old HP laptop malfunctioned, their technical support messed up really bad. Once a tech support from India was very hostile and even advised me to configure my computer incorrectly. In the end, it totally messed up my laptop and rendered it unusable. After several complaints they gave me a brand new laptop that was a newer model so it appeased me for a bit. HP should have all of my calls logged. I have spent too many hours with tech support, which has deterred me from calling them this time.

There are many negative things I could say, but I'll just share my biggest annoyances. I have had this HP for 2 weeks and already the volume stopped working. I tried plugging my head phones in. Didn't work. I tried different programs. Didn't work. I tried restarting my computer twice but to no avail. It's very frustrating. Why the Beats upgrade if the darn thing doesn't work properly with the other features? I may have gotten a bad product out of several functioning ones, but seeing as how my other HPs were messed up, this can't be simply chance. This has to be poor vision, design, staffing, and/or quality assurance.

The touchpad is also sub par, which might be a software issue with Synaptics. Sometimes it doesn't scroll and I have to wait a few minutes for the scroll to work again. This can be inefficient if you try to read documents/sites with multiple pages. I have tried tweaking the touchpad several different ways but the features are not efficient. There's also a huge gap on the right side of the touchpad, maybe because whoever put this together did not care about symmetry. Others may not care.

I care. And I care about efficiency, reliability, and going with a company that cares about the same thing.

Although I was reluctant to by another HP laptop because of my previous experiences, I wanted to give them a chance to redeem themselves. Failed attempt.

The performance is about what you would expect for such a underpowered AMD chipset Adequate. But, this isn't why I purchased the laptop. I purchased it for the promised 9.5 hours. Actually, I purchased 2 of these 3105m's. We are lucky to get 2.5 to 3.0 hours out of the laptops IF the screens are turned down so low that they are barely visible. There is no way to get anything close to 9 hours of even moderate to light use out of this laptop. I would not have purchased this laptop if I had known the actual battery life.

My 2-week old desktop wouldn't come out of sleep mode one day so I had to use the Hp 3105m while my custom desktop was sent back to the vendor. It took 4 weeks before I got it back so in the meantime I hooked up my monitor and wireless keyboard & mouse to the HP 3105m and I was off to the races. It wasn't as fast as my 4x desktop w/8GB memory & 128GB SSD2 but, hey, it was more than I anticipated and is NOT a 3.52 pound weakling.

Now I'm waiting on the arrival of my new HP 3115m w/2x E-450 & Radeon 6320 GPU, 4GB memory & Win7 Pro 64bit. It s/b here in a day or 2 (3/5 or 3/6/2012) and I'm expecting even more out of it now. I think I might even put an SSD2 in it.

The last AMD notebook I had was a 33MHz 386. I had an Intel 25MHZ 386 at the same time and I've used Intel most of my life but I'm a die-hard AMD fan now. APUs rule.

I have owned the 7214 for three weeks. It is quick and has top-of-the-line features. Including the latest Intel Ivy Bridge I7 3630QM chips. The biggest problem is using W8. A hybrid piece of software that ruins the computer desktop and is a half-ass tablet. However, leave it to American ingenuity to develop an add-on that transforms the W8 experience. Search for START 8, download for $5. It enables the 7214 to bypass W8 tile menu and brings up a Windows 7 desktop. Now W8 is workable. The official Start Menu/Tiles is worthless for the PC user since it does nothing of value. The apps have limited functionality, not even a navigation/tools menu at the top. Buy this powerful laptop, but also get Start 8.

I have owned this computer for over a month and i have had no problems running any programs. If you're looking to buy this computer for gaming it is a fairly good choice, the GT650M plays most games at high settings(Tested Far Cry 3 at high and got around 45-50fps). As for windows 8, it can be a little annoying until you learn the work arounds. two things i found that help are downloading START 8 and adding some hotkeys to quicken things up. I could not be happier with this computer in terms of looks, weight, and features. One thing that seems trivial, but is actually really nice for people like me who always lock their computer when they leave it. Is the fingerprint scanner, instead of typing in my usual 12-15 letter password i just slide my finger across the scanner and it reads it and lets me in.

What was my final reason for going with this computer over the others i was looking at was the screen. Damn am i glad i shelled out the extra $150 dollars for the 1080p screen, it looks absolutely amazing, no glare, and rich colors.

The only thing i was slightly disappointed with on this computer was the mouse pad, more specifically, it's button. The left click has no resistance in it and the right one does. it gets kind of annoying.

Overall i highly recommend this computer to anyone who wants a good looking, high-quality, and powerful computer that they can carry around with them.

Best Deals for HP ENVY DV6-7214nr Windows 8 Notebook PC

I really love this laptop. It has great hardware, which is the reason I bought it. It has a powerful processor, great graphics card, blu ray player, and a full HD 1080p screen. I don't give it five stars because of the build quality. I have had to order three separate laptops from Amazon because of problems with the laptop.

First was the keyboard, which wasn't installed properly and was kind of popping out of the laptop. I tried popping it back in, but ended up just ordering a replacement from Amazon to be safe. Then with the other laptop there was some backlight bleeding on the screen. When watching a dark movie or when on a dark screen there was some light emitting from the bottom of the screen, bleeding through from the backlight. Maybe not that big of a deal for most people, but if I am paying $1000 for a laptop I want it to be pretty much perfect. It's not the seller's fault, since the laptops are sealed new and they are not able to check them before selling them.

So, now I'm on my third laptop. Hopefully I don't discover anymore problems with it. Like I said, I love the components in the laptop itself, but the people putting them together don't seem to try too hard to make it perfect.

You can now get this laptop a little cheaper on HP's website with coupons than you can on Amazon right now (7/1/13), due to the fact that 4th generation processors will be put in HP's laptops soon so they are trying to get rid of last years models.

I owned this laptop for about a year. it was ok for 6 months, after that its getting very hot. unbearable. I spent lot of money on it and now I am stuck. I hate it every day I use it. Apart from this great performance.

But who wants a laptop that gets very hot quickly and has high fan speeds to cool down. so, your laptop sounds like an airplane when its quite around you. I read several HP user forums and there are a lot of complaints about the heat and noise this laptop generates. Bottom line 'don't buy it'

I play quite a few games and this is a fairly powerful laptop. Battlefield 3 can be run on Ultra settings though it does run at only 18 fps while on that setting. When set lower it runs without any hiccups at all.

The speakers sound good but the "Triple reflex subwoofer" doesnt really bleed through the treble very well.

All in all I like it a lot. 10/10 would buy again.

HP dm4-3090se (14.0-Inch Screen) Laptop Reviews

HP dm4-3090se Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
Favorable:

* Sharp, anti-glare screen

* Hybrid hard drive speeds up boot times noticeably

* Unique red-backlit keyboard

* Impressive battery life, given the specs

* Beats Audio provides better-than-average sound

Unfavorable:

* Premium HP Envy lineup is only $150 more

* Lid is a fingerprint haven

* Terrible speaker placement

* Tight USB ports

* On/Off Wi-Fi button easily pressed by accident

Introduction:

As a college student, my main justifications for selling off my previous computer was for better portability and battery life. Lugging my thick, weighty Dell around campus wasn't very fun, and although it got the job done, I ultimately decided a different laptop would serve my current needs much better. My initial goal was to end up with a thin and light or possibly an ultraportable. A Toshiba Portege r835 or Asus Zenbook perhaps. So, how in the world did I end up with the HP dm4-3090se? The short answer: The formerly mentioned machines simply didn't have the features I longed for. The longer, more descriptive answer: I can't wrap it all into one sentence, but keep reading and I promise I'll tell you!

Specifications:

I'll keep this section short and sweet since Amazon has the specs readily available on this webpage. This computer came with an i5-2450M @ 2.5 GHz and Turbo Boost Technology of up to 3.1 GHz. 500GB 7200RPM Hard drive with a 20GB mSATA drive*. 6GB of RAM. 14-inch anti-glare (matte) screen with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900. Red-backlit keyboard, no number pad included. 3 USB Ports ( Two 3.0 and One 2.0), HDMI Port, Ethernet Port, Card Reader, Beats Audio with Subwoofer. In other words, this laptop is loaded.

*HP has recently increased the mSATA capacity from 20GB to 32GB. My machine came with a 32GB.

Unboxing and Initial Impressions:

I bought this laptop off Amazon and it arrived a couple of days later by UPS. Upon opening the box, I was greeted with the power cord, battery, setup instructions, a packet featuring advertisements for HP's many accessories and Norton Anti-Virus, and the laptop itself nicely placed in a cloth sleeve. There is some widespread confusion about whether there is a Beats Audio headphone included and I can say with certainty that there are no headphones, of any kind, included with this computer. It would have been nice, but HP isn't feeling quite that generous.

I pressed the power button, located in the top, left corner, expecting a somewhat slow boot time. Any brand new Windows-based computer has to go through the dreaded "Preparing Windows for first time use" screen before use. From my experience, this can take up to three minutes! So it goes without saying that I was completely taken aback at how fast the setup was. I can't give you a specific time length, but it was asking what I wanted to name the computer in well under a minute. And thanks to the hybrid hard drive, boot up times are always between 10-15 seconds.

Design and Features:

As this is the Beats Audio Special Edition of the current dm4 lineup, the user is graced with a nearly all black finish. A major plus, for me anyways, is the matte black covering most areas. This cuts down the reflections and annoying glares that come being outside in the sunlight or in a classroom full of florescent lights. The top lid is all black, save the now iconic Beats symbol placed in the very center. Open the notebook up and you are greeted with even more black. In fact, the keyboard, trackpad, and palm rests are graced in a mute, matte black finish . It makes for one very cool-looking laptop, to say the least.

The screen is gorgeous! The first thing everyone should know, is that this is a matte screen. Simply put, the horrendous reflections brought on by glossy screens are a thing of the past! I know glossy has had its fair share of user backlash, and it still stumps me as to why computer manufacturers continue to put these screens on the majority of machines. This screen also features a resolution of 1600x900, also a rarity in the 14-inch laptop world. Text will be smaller, but less pixilated and much sharper.

The next thing I went for was the keyboard. It has a red-backlight! Keep in mind, this feature can be turned off or on by pressing F5. Some users may be turned off by the color, and I admit that it probably isn't for everyone. It isn't blinding bright, but at the same time it isn't particularly mute. For me, it is just right. And to top it off, typing is a breeze!

The Beats Audio provides a very loud and clear sound. I primarily listen to hip-hop and R&B and noticed right off the bat how natural the sound was. There is a subwoofer as well, lending a hand on the low end. Given this combination, music sounds full and without noticeable distortion. It's a shame, however, that HP placed the speakers on the very front, at an angle. This often muffles the sound, especially if you have the notebook in your lap or on the bed.

Drawbacks:

First off, there is no dedicated graphics card, only the industry standard Intel HD 3000. This particular con varies on severity, depending on intended use. The causal user probably won't notice the difference, but for you gamers and video editors out there, consider a different laptop.

The lid cover, and even the keys, attract fingerprints heavily. Being black, fingerprints tend to show up more than usual.

The USB ports are quite tight. Attempting to inject and deject my USB flash drive was a job in itself. It took two hands, one to hold the computer in place, the other to pull the device from the port.

The Wi-Fi switch is in a terrible location. The F12 key serves as an automatic on/off switch of your wireless card and accidentally pressing it during a download or Skype conversation can have tumultuous effects on one's sanity.

What Makes This Laptop Worth the Purchase (Conclusion):

See, I promised if you kept reading I would tell you why I chose the dm4-3090se! The current going price of this laptop is around $830, and if you are still reading this review, you obviously want to be as informed as possible before making such a purchase. I don't blame you. After hours of debating, I ultimately chose this machine for the following reasons:

* The i5 Sandy Bridge Processor. Dual core @ 2.5 GHz

* 6GB Random Access Memory (RAM)

* The screen. A matte finish and 1600x900 resolution. This was the deciding factor in my purchase.

* Hybrid Hard Drive

* Red-backlit keyboard

* Beats Audio

* USB 3.0

* HDMI

Laptops with comparable specs are normally in the "premium" category and beyond the $1000 price point, such as the HP Envy line. Granted, for only $150 more you can have an Envy with an all metal finish and a slot-loading optical drive. But you also get a standard resolution (1366x768) glossy screen and an added pound of weight to carry. So for me, the screen was what set this laptop apart from the competition. People often overlook this pivotal feature, assuming all laptops are glossy and reflective with a single resolution. But the screen is what you will be looking at, possibly for hours, and if you aren't happy with the screen, how can you be truly happy with the laptop?

Savvy shoppers tend to be weary of HP and the company's shaky reputation. This will unfortunately deter many prospective buyers who would be perfectly happy with this computer if they gave it a chance. Initial usage is impressive, with the few complaints being quite trivial. If the previously mentioned specifications fits your needs, I urge you to seriously consider this laptop. It is truly unlike any other notebook currently on the market and is a true miracle for the anti-glare, pro-matte screen consumer.

EDIT:

For readers obsessed with numbers, here is the most recent Windows Experience Index:

Processor 7.0

Memory (RAM) 7.4

Graphics 5.9

Gaming Graphics 6.3

Primary Hard Disk 5.9

EDIT: After reading comments by Zvika and OJMH, I installed Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver, restarted the computer, and was able to see the true capacity of my mSATA drive. It is in fact 32GB! I have edited this review to reflect that. I don't know what drive is 20GB under the System Properties menu, but like Reinaldo mentioned, the mSATA is not visible by this method. So I believe this drive works as a cache, which is the true reason for such a fast start-up. Either way, this systems performance is more than adequate and I am still happy with it! Thanks to Reinaldo, OJMH, and Zvika for the clarification.

I am not a tech person, so all the numbers and specs don't mean much to me (although I do know it has plenty of storage and a good processor). The ease of use and my preferences are what I know and what I can comment on. I have only had this computer a day, but here are my inital feelings about this product. I could not find reviews anywhere on this particular stock model so was really sort of blind going into the purchase.

I haven't found anything yet that I do not like about it. It is lightweight (about 4 punds) with a 14 inch screen(kind of small, but if you make the fonts a bit bigger it is not bad). It came with a thin little sleeve that I probably won't ever use.

Setup was easy. Just follow a series of prompts and voila! The registration was complete, I was connected to wifi, my fingerprints were taken, and I set up user accounts/passwords. The screen was nice and bright upon login and the colors where vivid, and it booted up swiftly. I am not a big gamer, but the graphics look just fine to me. I don't think there is alot of junk on it that I do not want and will need to delete.

It processes nice and fast and I was able to do multiple tasks at once with no delay. I am tranfering all of my files from my old computer with Carbonite and that is taking forever (more than 12 hours so far), but I think that is to be expected with such a large tranfser from the "cloud". The good thing about this is that you can still use the computer while the process is taking place.

I have downloaded and transfered my itunes purchases to it easily and listened to some songs. The volume goes up nice and loud (very different than my old Dell)and you can customize the audio. I played around with it and got it customized to my preferences and am pleased with the sound.

It comes with a starter version of Word and Excel 2010. I am not sure as to what extent you can use these because I bought the Office Professional software with everything (Word and Excel plus powerpoint and others). I bought through my company at a discounted price, but you can buy and download online for around $120 I think.

I really like the fingerprint reader that you can use to remember your passwords for online websites. It's a pain to remember them all, but this will do it for you! It was easy to set up and to use. The first time you log into a website it will ask you if you want the reader to remember the password. Click yes and that's it! Next time you want to log in you just swipe your finger across the sensor(from top to bottom towards your body).

I also really like the backlit keyboard. It types really well, feels nice to type on, and should not get dirt under the keys due to it's design. The keyboard was not initially lit up, and I looked forever under control panel trying to figure out how to turn it on before I finally googled it. There is actually a key on the keyboard that will turn it off and on...it has three little boxes and a flash looking icon above the first one. It is somewhere around the 3 or 4 key (I am not on this computer typing this review). There is not a seperate number keyboard on the right hand side like my old one had, and that I may sort of miss.

It was easy to customize various features like backgrounds, sounds, clicker and touch pad options, sleep options, etc. Also easy to customize your web browser and favorites, etc. The computer features some sort of cooling device that keeps it from overheating. I can not comment yet as to battery life because I have had to keep it plugged in for my Carbonite transfer.

I briefly tried the webcam, and it is okay. Nothing spectacular in my opinion, but I also don't video chat much. The picture was nice and clear.

I bought the Square Trade Warranty through Amazon and have been pleased so far with the ease of setting that up. Both the computer and the warranty are cheaper on Amazon than the HP website so I saved a ton of money! For the price and performance of my new computer, so far I am thrilled! Plus, with Amazon you can return it within 30 days if you don't like it! I called Square trade and you can also get a refund for the warranty if you return it.

For an average user that uses laptops for web browsing, word processing/creating documents, social media, etc. this computer is great. It has met my expectations and I look forward to having some fun with it!

UPDATE: I finally have all files on my computer and have found in a few instances there has been a lag, but nothing way serious. The backlit keyboard key is the functon 5 key. Also, the function 12 key turns on and off your capabilities to use the internet so if you loose your internet and are seriously confused like I was, this key was probably hit on accident. My computer did not come with any paperwork or a users manual, so I am figuring all these little things out on my own.

I started researching the capablity this computer has to display wirelessly on the tv and you have to buy an adapter Netgear PUSH2TV HD PTV2000 which is 90 bucks here on Amazon so I may hold off on that for a bit. Reviews seems to be mixed, but if it works would be way cool.

I also thought I read something about it being able to play Bluray movies, but when I tried it would not work :( Normal dvds worked just fine though.

I installed a free trial of Paintshop Pro x4 from the Corel website and think I wil purchase the full version for photo editing. I am a beginner at it, but this program seems to be user friendly and intuitive.

UPDATE: So I am stil loving my computer...I have had to call HP customer support because for some reason my fingerprint reader stopped working. At first I was annoyed because the rep was foreign (although I could understand him okay) and there is just a lack of communication when dealng with outsourced technical communications in general (or so my history has proved). Also, the script type of communication I get when working with outsourced companies aggravates me as well. Kinda felt at first like it was ME being an idiot and not the computer. Yes, I have restared my computer. The light's not blinking at all...I KNOW IT"S NOT WORKING!!!

Once the couple of routine steps were completed and they reached the same conclusion I had a long time ago (the reader is not working), I was a bit more impressed with the service. He did not seem to be reading straight from a script which I have encountered in the past. I allowed him remote access to the computer and he uninstalled the reader and then re-installed it and it worked! Something I probably could have done myself with less hassles, but like I said I am not all that tech savy and don't want to mess anything up. Afterwards, I was forwarded to a supervisor to rate my experience and to make sure my problem was solved. I felt for sure I would try to be sold on some warranty or give them more money, but no! It was really in fact just a quality service check which only took a minute and I was happy to oblidge.

Best Deals for HP dm4-3090se (14.0-Inch Screen) Laptop

I've had this laptop for over a week now and each day I find something new to appreciate about it. It's about as close to perfect as any computer I've had, and I've had quite a few.

I use this machine mainly for Microsoft Office (which you much buy separately), for Adobe files and for the internet, but in my job I am often required to have numerous spreadsheets, word documents and power point presentations open at the same time, as well as some challenging Adobe documents. This computer can handle those jobs and have numerous browsers open in say IE and Chrome and Opera simultaneously (I am forced to use my multiple screen desktop for some jobs though, of course). But considering the abilities of this laptop I feel I have a full office in a 4 pound package. The power of the I5 processor and the speed of the hard drive and SSD is evident.

The screen resolution of this laptop is nothing short of amazing. I've watched Hulu on this machine and wow! I swear it looks like a 3D picture. The screen is readable in most light situations including sunlight (though it's a little more difficult in the brightest sunlight). I also really like the way you can adjust the brightness of the screen very easily through the F2 and F3 keys.

Other points: The lighted keyboard is great. It's amazing how much easier it is to use this keyboard than those on prior laptops. The computer also never heats up and that makes a huge difference when using it for long times. Bootup time seems almost instant. The speakers are outstanding. Unlike some other reviewers I did not find a problem with the touch pad. The fingerprint security system works perfectly for me. And finally, the battery life makes it seem like you can use this computer for indefinite periods without recharging. And another feature I did not anticipate is that it recharges so quickly.

My only complaint, and it's minor, is that one of the flaps on the bottom has a slight imperfection. It "almost" fits but does not totally snap into place. It's minor enough that I don't think it worthy of bringing the rating down from five stars. This machine has a lot going for it.

I'm glad I did the research before buying and I'm very happy with my choice. I looked at CNET, at reviews here, at specs, took a look at numerous other machines and from what I saw the price to performance beats anything else out there.

Honest reviews on HP dm4-3090se (14.0-Inch Screen) Laptop

love my hp dm4-3090se. This laptop def turns heads at school when I pull it admist the sea of macbooks that every has. I did a lot of research on laptops and narrowed my choices to this or the envy 14 beats addition (which my friend has) he came over the other day and we compared the two laptops side by side and I def made the right choice for my needs

Screen Size:

first of dm4 is 14'' not all that noticable difference tho (I think 14'' is plenty of screen and wanted something smaller that would fit well into my backpack)

Screen Res:

The dm4 has 1600x900 antiglare led screen is really nice. After watching nba on league pass on this screen, I dont think I would go back to the lower resolution. It looks almost as good as my 1080p tv. The colors seem a bit washed out due to the antiglare screen but you might be able to adjust it, you get use to it. (could of done without the plastic around the screen though, one of the only downfalls with this laptop)

The envy 14 has a lower res screen but the display is just like on the macbook pro with the all glass screen (this looks better from an athstetics standpoint but I like my hd res better)

Wieght:

This laptop is about 4.5 lbs. which is about a pound lighter than the envy 14 (again better to carry for school)

Keyboard:

exactly the same red backlight keyboard (pretty sharp and unique if you ask me...love it)

Fingerprint reader:

nice to have and cool that you dont have to type in your id's and passwords over and over but not necessarily needed

processor

This computer has a 2nd gen i5 while the envy 14 has a first gen i7 (i didnt really need a 4 cores for web browsing and microsoft office but some people may like the extra power)

battery life:

Iv been getting around 6 hours (feels like more, I hardly charge my computer) while my friends envy 14 gets about 2 hours

hard drive:

I love the hybrid hard dirve. This thing soft boots out of sleep mode in a couple seconds and turns on from off in about 20-30 id say...plenty quick (520gb is plenty gb for me)

ram/memory:

6gb has been plenty for me. (i had 5 tabs open on google chrome while running excel, word, and powerpoint and it was plenty fast) I also stream nba league pass on nba.com which also has a nice picture with no lag

graphics card:

def adv envy 14 here. I know the dm4 has an entry level card but honestly i will never notice the difference (I use my xbox for games not my laptop)

sound:

At first I thought the speakers were just pretty good but once my friend adjusted them these are the best laptop speakers iv ever heard (but this is to be expected in the beats by dre edition laptop)

pros:

a lot of laptop for only $825

fast boot time

sound

high screen res

lightwieght

good battery life

cons:

fingerprint magnet

plastic around screen

I would def buy again and def recommend this laptop for someone like me who likes black and red and uses a laptop for internet and microsoft office for school rather than gaming. This laptop will def turn heads.

This is a more tech savvy review.

I was between this laptop and a Dell XPS x14z ($823 versus $899 at the time of my purchase). Now that I received it and took a look at the details I'm very happy I picked this one. Yes, the XPS comes with more RAM and a bigger hard drive plus nvidia graphics and also spot a backlit keyboard, but this has it own charm.

The laptop comes with this mSATA unit as a cache using Smart Response Technology (SRT) in a RAID with the 500gb drive. It works pretty well. Very fast boot time and overall fast response of the system. The mSATA drive doesn't show on Windows since it exclusive for the cache.

I was lucky enough to get one of 32gb instead of 20gb. Now, a review from a very respected laptop website states that the mSATA is NOT user-accessible, this is wrong. The mSATA is right next to the RAM memory slots. Looks pretty easy to replace, but I have no idea on compatibility with others mSATA drives.

What's interesting is that it's possible to turn off the SRT SSD cache, leaving the mSATA drive as standalone. I already did this and it works wonderful. This allows you to have an SSD drive and a normal high capacity drive all in this 14 inch laptop.

After installing Windows and basic programs on the SSD, I have 5gb left. Now Windows boot up time is just 22 seconds, that's from the moment I press the power button to the desktop completely loaded.

The laptop comes with 6gb of RAM, mine has a 4gb DIMM and a 2gb DIMM, if you are looking to take it to 8gb then you will only need to replace the 2gb one.

Windows Experience Index after using the mSATA SSD as an standalone drive:

Processor --> 7.0

Memory (RAM) --> 7.3

Graphics --> 5.9

Gaming Graphics --> 6.2

Primary Hard Disk --> 7.6 (Yay!)

To close it up

Pros:

Hybrid hard drive using SRT technology

Possibility of turning off the SRT and having the benefict of a SSD drive and the big storage space of a normal HDD drive

Anti-glare screen with a great resolution

No ports on the back

Red-backlit keyboard

Runs very cool

Cons:

Touch pad could be better

Lid is a fingerprint magnet

Basic Intel graphics

You can get the HP Envy line for about $200 more, or the Dell for less than $100 more, but you won't get this high resolution screen and won't get the hybrid drive option, which in my opinion are the high point of this laptop and the ones that makes it unique.

Highly recommended.

This product has unbelievable build quality, it feels extremely solid and is well manufactured. The specs are amazing and has everything any reasonable person could want. I got mine yesterday and am very, very satisfied with the product. Highly recommended alternative to an ultrabook better price and who can tell the difference anyway?

The worst laptop ever. Three times back to service center and they can't fix it. Now they want a technician to come to my house as though that will make a difference. Now we learn that all available technicians are off for the holidays so its now Dec 27 and we wait until Jan 2 to schedule an appointment. Have asked for a refund several times but that is just not in the cards. I will never buy from HP again (and we buy alot around here as we both work through our computers). Bad job HP, very bad job.

12/28/2012...after Peter (see his post below) emailed regarding this issue the representative that we've been dealing with all along called again. His purpose was to confirm (again) that we have an appointment to see a technician in our home to review the issue. So after several weeks of back and forth with the service center now we can wait another 10 days for a technician (they are all off for the holidays I am told). We said to Jamie again that what we want is a refund.

The best companies to deal with would have long ago taken this lemon back...companies such as Amazon and Costco would immediately end our dissatisfaction...but in this case we purchased directly from HP who only seems to care about their own internal metrics. Next step after the technician visits I will be posting the positive outcome or the videos of this Lemon Laptop will be posted on YouTube and every other social media I can find. Yes, we are upset. This was a birthday gift from my wife and she is way more upset then I am.

01/04/13...the technician invested 2 hours of his time and could not get the laptop to act up. He watched a couple of my videos but in the end determined there was nothing wrong with it. Within hours after he left the screen froze up again. i made another video and called customer support. Now we wait for a call back.

January 9, 2013 update...we have filed complaints with the BBB and Attorney Generals Office because HP cannot fix the problem and will not offer a refund or an exchange.

This computer has a fatal flaw and this flaw killed my Envy.

The lid on this laptop sticks and weight is poorly distributed (it's designed that way). It's necessary to carefully pry this thing open with both hands. Most new Ultra-books are designed to open smoothly with one hand. NOPE, NOT THIS ONE.

Try to open it with one hand at your own peril, the entire laptop lifts up and flips over.

Mine fell off the counter this way, smashed the corner and broke off a piece of the case.

OK, it's only cosmetic, but here's the other issue. Since it was delivered, I had been getting the blue screen of death (BSOD) from a failing SSD card. I was getting ready to send it into HP before "the fall." Now that it was "dropped", HP refused to fix the SSD under warranty (obviously, dropping it didn't break the SSD).

So, I spent the $60, bought an SSD card and fixed it myself everything was working great.

Then it happened...

My sister asked to borrow my new HP Envy OK Sis, no problem.

I began to demonstrate what NOT TO DO so this thing doesn't break.

The stupid piece of junk slipped off my finger about 4 inches from the counter.

Guess what, it died! From a 3-4 inch slip. Dead at 6 months old. Give me a break!

Call me an idiot for not knowing how to open a laptop, but this is just simply bad design.

In the past I bought a new HP laptop every two years.

NOT ANYMORE! I will NEVER buy another HP.

A large display with a 1366 resolution too bad. This laptop should be offered with 1080p resolution and more people would buy it. Too bad that HP missed the boat again... But the good thing is, sometimes they listen to basic observations like this one and adapt we'll see...
