When I received the item the packaging was slightly destroyed, but the actual box that contained the laptop was fine and the computer was unharmed. I love the looks of the computer very sleek. After set-up, the laptop was a little slow, but I deleted a couple of existing programs everything was great and the computer ran much, much faster. I am very pleased with my purchase!

I bought a refurbished version of this specific laptop (2.2.GHz Celeron, 298GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Win7 Home Premium 64 Bit) from Asus at a very reasonable price. It took a little setting up as the documentation was pretty poor, and I had to download a few new drivers to get all the functions working, but overall I am pleased so far with this laptop after 2+ months.

The screen is a decent size and the keyboard has a nice feel. I like the ability to set different display modes, including a "gamma correction" setting. The processor seems adequate and I am able to do some fairly intense image processing using GIMP, generating huge files with no problem.

The only negative in my view is the low number of USB ports. There are only 2 so if you want to use a tablet, mouse and external drives too it becomes a bit of a chore.

Overall though I am very pleased with this laptop and would recommend it for everyday tasks.

excellent value on this small light weight laptop. it fits into my soft brief case easily. It is perfect as a travelling laptop. screen is vivid, keyboard fits and feels good to the touch. speed is adequate but ok for my use. i purchased a clear plastic cover that fits snugly and protects the surface from scratches. i bought this laptop not from here but from best buy. best buys model comes with 6gb of ram and for the same price but it is a sleek machine, very hard to get finger prints on it at all. the outside case looks beautiful with its brushed metal look, i was very suprised to see this little laptop can run portal 2 with everything on high with no lag at all, but i have noticed the screen is in lack of color and its not very severe but it will make u notice if you are a videophile like myself lol. the kayboard is nice and very spacious except i had trouble getting used to the fact it has a 10 digit keypad on it to but it isnt that big of a gripe as i got used to it withen a week. and it didnt come with alot of crap-ware on it either. but i think 600$ is a great price for this laptop, oh sorry one more thing the webcam is amazing no lag at all even on skype. but the mic is right in the base of the case by the keyboard so u can easily here a tick tick tick noise on the other persons mic if you are typeing lol.

I've had this computer for almost three years. About two years into it it developed the heating issue that others have complained about it began shutting down at unpredictable intervals; usually when I had the CPU running at full capacity. I did some research and discovered that the problem was dust. Namely poor cooling design causes the computer to take dust inside and over time it makes it hard for the computer to release heat properly. I took it to a computing center and got them to open it up and clear out the dust I'd long since been off warranty.

I also went out and dropped 20 dollars on an extrernal antec laptop fan. It's the kind of fan that you sit your computer on and it operates more silently than the toshiba fan. Together with a regular vaccuming of the actual laptop fan to suck out any dust I haven't had a problem since then. I'm going to take it in again in a month or two to get the dust cleared out BEFORE I start having problems again.

So I know what you're thinking...why the 4 stars? I paid less than 1200 bucks for this machine. A dell machine of similar price would be falling apart in many, many, more critical ways (I should know I used to work in a computer lab), and compaq's/hps are infinitely worse machines. It's speedy, I've had absolutely no connectivity problems with the wifi (I've used over a dozen different wifi connections and I often have a stronger connection than my friends), ditto with the LAN...I've used the modem precisely once so I can't comment on that.

I've put a total of 70 dollars worth of service into this machine. You put way more money into a car to maintain it. A computer is a complicated piece of machinery...I don't understand people who think that they can buy it and not have to do anything to allow it to keep operating in peak condition.

Does this computer have it's flaws? Yes. But for it's price it's a good value. I wouldn't buy a Honda and expect a Mercedes.

i have had this laptop for 3 years now, and during the 1 year company warranty and 3 year with compusa, i had the WORST cooling problem...like the other users on this review forum, I had to ice the heat sinc in order to keep my laptop from shutting off abruptly (note folks that this is a security for your computer, if it continues to increase in temperature while it remains on, your hardware may be destroyed due to intense heat)...thus i had compusa replace the whole cooling system...it was a breeze and on a couple occasion had it it abruptly shut down on its own with the new cooling plates (for the new users without a warranty, the best way to maintain the cooling system is to blow straight into the exhaust while holding a damp cloth up to the fan screen, thus you will catch all the dust build-up)...also while i had my laptop hanging from my shoulder, my mustang door came swinging back at me knocking my laptop to the ground causing the hard driv to fail....this is typcial once excessive shock has been encountered...i simply had this replaced...for the next year and a half i had no problems and with all the things filed such as my library of 1500+ songs and music videos i still havnt filled up the lovely 60GB HDD...it is however as we call it today, a good desktop replacement according to its weight...its weight is on the rim btwn laptops that stay at home and laptops you can lug around at school...lately however iv been using a 3rd party ac adaptor and my ground needle snapped off...eventually i believe the temporary solder work i did to charge the unit caused the lcd backlight to short...after much research NOTE* even though your power jack supply is fused to the motherboard, you can have someone professionally un-solder that jack and replace it with another one at (which is about $25)...and if you can spot what has caused your backlight to go out like mine, (connections, lcd, bulb, etc) generailly it is bound to be the whole screen...all you need to do is go to a site like and they will provide you a brand new screen (with available extra options like XBRITE in sync with the tech today)for roughly around $250 $300 brand new... USERS if u made the investment already, take care of it because regardless of TOSHIBA having great technology the only downer is that their parts and durabilty are not necessarily the strongest...in comparison to the new line of Sony Vaio Laptops my A35 is just one big peice of powerful plastic...if u refuse to do repairs there are companies wherein you can sell your computer and they will buy it off you for the good parts...I FOR ONE AM IN NO FINANCIAL POSITION TO GET UP AND REPLACE THE WHOLE THING ESPECIALLY WITH THE NEW COOLING SYSTEM AND HARD DRIVE...it has served me strong for the past 3 YEARS in MOVIE MAKING for school, music promotion, web-design, church-sermon audio recording/digital and many work and school related tasks, so far everything else is good for another couple years...thnx

I've had my AS35-S159 for close to 8 years with almost no problems. I did encounter the overheating issue at some point and all it required was vacuuming off some of the dust and cat hair trapped in the cooling unit. My wife went through 2 laptops (HP, DELL) during the same time.

What sets this laptop apart is stability, I can have 3-4 programs running at once and it never crashes. I will definitely stick with Toshiba for my next laptop whenever that may be.

I bought this computer about a year ago and like one of the previous owners, I had a problem with it shutting down for no reason. I found after sending it out to get serviced that the CPU fan went bad and when it overheated, it shut down. I like the keyboard feel and the display is good in comparision to my older Toshiba laptop. I wish that it had more USB ports and expansion, but the ability to load it up with 2 gig of ram is a plus. The battery life is good too.

Bought mine through a major computer retailer (now selling on-line only)over 5 years ago and couldn't be any happier with my Toshiba A-35.

Not a speed demon, but solid and dependible.

The overheating issues have been grossly over stated by a few noisy users. A little care and proper handling/storage and use of this little box and it is happy to perform.

I'm writing this as a testament to Toshiba's quality and reliability. The A-35 is no longer available but Toshiba still continues to make the soundest, best built and nost dependible laptops. Period.

I worked at Microsoft for 4 years, and when I was ready to buy a laptop, I asked around. Engineers, technicians, developers, Program Managers unanimously told me to 'Buy a Toshiba!'. So I did. Good advice.

Toshiba has listened to the marketplace and added more USB ports to subsequent models. The touchpad has improved.

Buy on price point if you dare, but you can't go wrong forking over a few more bones to buy Toshiba's solid dependibility.

We live out in the sticks, and when we finally got reliable 3G broadband and a wireless network set up, I was ready to no longer share the 2 year old computer with the rest of the family and get a laptop of my own. I use this laptop mainly for my home office: word processing, spreadsheets, internet, photo editing, and a few specific programs. I've found this unit to be a very reasonable tool for these functions.

This laptop is lightning fast, has plenty of memory, decent graphics/sound, and seems well constructed. I've read a couple of reviews that mention slow start ups, but I have not found this to be the case. I agree that Windows 8 has a pretty big learning curve for the first few days ("intuitive", my left foot!), but after some initial frustration I was able to navigate through the program screens rather easily. I find I still favor the "classic" laptop homescreen, but since Win 8 is app driven, that may be part of why you can have so many screens/tiles open and working with no speed lag. I also really like that the function shortcuts are printed on the keys in blue so I'm not constantly looking them up until I memorize them. I am not a fan of touchpads, so I like being able to quickly disable it with just a keystroke and turn on my wireless mouse instead. Bluetooth connected to all my other devices (wireless speaker, wireless headphones, my Droid X) without missing a beat. Again, noticed no loss of speed or data with multiple connections active.

Just a couple of things that bug me:

1. The CD drive is pretty flimsy. The first time I inserted a DVD to try out the graphics, the DVD did not stay in the tray.

When I pushed the tray into the laptop, the DVD floated up and lodged in the housing above the drive. Fortunately, I was

able to fish the DVD out using a piece of padding and some tweezers without damaging the laptop or the disk.

2. There is no caps lock/number lock indicator light. Sounds like a small thing...until you want to do a lot of word processing.

This kind of drives me crazy.

3. Not a big fan of the shiny piano case finish on the exterior and around the screen. Fingerprint city! I am always wiping

the thing off so I don't look like a slob.

4. There are no programs loaded onto the laptop "as is" that are not internet driven. I kind of enjoyed having a few games and

goodies on the old Windows formats that were available to play offline. Bye, bye solitaire.

Admittedly, the above list are small things that I like to grouse about, but they would not be enough alone to keep me from making this purchase again. I still think this is a good machine for the money.

Good for the price (680$ ish) although there are minor flaws with this design.

Quick note: I've maxed out the ram, installed an ssd and installed windows 7.

Even without the ram/ssd upgrade this computer is still quite fast.

Good stuff

+ Construction is fine, nothing's loose (flex below the keyboard though)

+ Screen is quite bright, should be view-able outdoors if sun isn't to bright

+ Optical drive (not flimsy at all)

+ Not too bulky

+ 3rd gen i7

+ Keyboard is comfortable and responsive

+ Exterior design is very sensible

+ Internal fan is usually very quiet

+ Good packaging, arrives in one piece.

Not so good stuff

Acer doesn't sell higher capacity batteries so you will have to order from some shady foreign retailer if you need one.

Bad speakers, you can compensate somewhat with third party software. I personally recommend breakaway audio enhancer instead of the dolby home theater.

Both the lid and plastic surrounding the touchpad are fingerprint magnets.

Keyboard and the edge below it will leave marks on the screen (happens on all laptops).

Touchpad placement could be better. It will impede left-handed typing unless temporarily disabled, or until you adjust.

Touchpad gestures are clumsy, 'unlocked' versions of the elantech touchpad driver don't actually exist. (More on this below)

No caps lock, scroll lock, or num lock indicator lights. (Arguably not a bad thing)

Keyboard has minor ghosting issues.

Other thoughts:

If you're going to install a fresh OS as I did, finding suitable touchpad drivers is next to impossible. Each driver version that you can hunt down on the internet removes some features and activates others for no obvious reason. Basically, no publicly available drivers enable all the hardware supported features at the same time. The only way to permanently activate all of the touchpad's features (2/3/4 finger gestures, regions, scroll settings, etc..) is to edit the driver's installation config file. Shame on elantech and acer for not having any sort of documentation or support for this. If the stock setup is fine or if the touchpad gestures are irrelevant then ignore this.

Also, the hm77 chipset supports up to 16gb of ram @ up to 1866mhz (or even higher, though not officially). You are *not* limited to 8gb as stated in the specifications.

Average cpu temp is 47-55c on a light workload, around 85c under stress.

Screen is glossy, not matte.

No technical manual included, but you can find one online if you search around.

Note that you have to hold f2 at boot to access the bios. If you have an SSD you may have to go in there and enable 'legacy bios' to get it to boot.

Also note that bios options are severely limited, the only thing you can adjust is boot order and system time. That is all.

The only drawback I have with it so far is the weak speakers but I did not necessarily buy it for the speakers much more the functionality of a laptop. I also dislike how the swiping method from outside the mousepad onto the mousepad alternates open windows but I am sure I can edit that once I figure out more of the operating system.

Seller experience: It was a bit confusing due to the fact that the seller sells products on both Amazon and Ebay. I wanted two of these units however one sold on eBay during my purchase of two. I had great feedback from the seller and we cancelled the order and I just had to reorder the one he had left. It was tedious but at least he is up front and honest.

I purchased this laptop a month ago; it has crashed twice already, it will require more memory. The speakers/sound is good. The picture/resolution is good. I woould not purchase this laptop again, I probably wouldnt recommend it either. The keys on the keyboard are flat which can be annoying for some people. It has taken me some time to get used to this. I havent played movies on it yet, but I have watched You Tube videos and the resolution is good.

Gateway MT6705 Dual-Core 1.6GHz 1GB 120GB DVD±RW 15.4-Inchwith Windows Vista

I bought a demo unit of this machine in 2007 from an Office Depot, and reinstalled from disc (any legitimate MT6705 -even demo models -came with discs, unlike that of one of the reviewers, apparently).

It has worked flawlessly ever since, other than things I dislike about Vista (had to do serious workarounds to install software that was safe and secure and updated -so there was no reason to use multiple measures to prevent it -but whose developers had not paid a royalty to Microsoft. If you use exclusively software desired my Microsoft, it will install like a dream)

The screen is bright and beautiful, the machine runs fast (probably helped by my adding RAM to arrive at its 2Gig maximum), and I get decent battery life for a machine this size.

In my case, I do not keep the screen at full brightness in order to save power and heat, but it still looks very nice. I use it primarily for Internet access, running programs (C, java, etc.), using the webcam, making CDs.

The only problem I ever had with it is that in its initial configuration, it would yank down the wireless card when you unplugged the unit's power source, and to get it back you have to use hotkeys Fn-F2 (using control panel's networking commands to try to enable/disable wireless did NOT get it working, only the hotkeys did -had to have a friend look them up for me on his computer since I couldn't get online to find out for myself;-) I believe that configuring "power options" in the control panel was what solved this for me.

I have not had the power supply problems. Perhaps my electric supplier has a more clean, regulated power supply, or perhaps it really did help that I have always had it plugged into an APC surge protector instead of directly into a wall outlet.

In 2011 I am still using it.

Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but a Gateway.

Okay, so I am one of those people that is EXTREMELY nervous when buying expensive things. The computer, happily, turned out to be a fantastic deal for what I got. The computer, most importantly is quick, don't worry, the first time you turn it on it may seem slow, but that is because it has a lot to set up, it only gets faster and faster. It came pre-loaded with google chrome and internet explorer pinned to the bar. As well as Toshiba Book Place and Toshiba App place. Both are pretty cool tools. It also comes with Microsoft 2010 Trial Program; I already bought Microsoft 2010, so I just typed in the product key. The key board is pretty cool, the keys are now back lit, but the mouse pad has a pretty bright light, as well as the lights above the keyboard (system control panel). It is a Windows 7 computer, has intel CORE i5, is energy star approved (energy friendly and shuts down to sleep to conserve engery. very nice. It is very asthetically please, which its chrome/black like finish. It has a premium sound system, and it sounds surprisingly good. It also has a very nice resolution and video quality. There are 4 USB slots (one of which is USB 3.0 sleep and charge), I like that. OH and a side note whenever you move the computer, a notification (which can be turned off) pops up saying that the hardrive has been moved to "safeplace" while it is being moved around too much. Cool feature, in case you are being to rough with it to prevent damage to the hardrive. There is also a security lock slot, a DC-IN, Optical disc drive, Microphone/Line-In jack, Headphone jack, Cooling Vents, RGB Port, Network Port, and HDMI Out Port. I really like that there is a seperate number pad off to the side, that happily, does not take away from the good size of the keyboard. It comes with a 1 year standard warranty by toshiba and a $10 dollar eMusic card (around 20 songs). I am really glad I got this computer, very nice, fast, easy to set up and understand. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great laptop for their money. Feel free to ask any questions, I WILL ANSWER :)

I purchased this Toshiba Satellite laptop as a birthday present to myself a few days ago and am not disappointed. This is my favorite computer among the MacBook and laptops that I own. This computer is the most powerful of all, and the 2nd Generation i5 processor is fantastic. The graphics display on DVD and Netflix videos is excellent and the harman/kardon speakers are awesome! Overall I am pleased so far with the operation of this laptop and the specs included are impressive for the cost. Also, the laptop cover is handsome and has interesting ridges that will hide potential scratches well. Please feel free to post questions. I will answer them if I can.

When my Dell Inspiron died, I used my husband's Toshiba S655 for a few days and realized how much I'd been missing. Amazon's offer of 12 monthly payments without interest charge enabled me to talk my husband into letting me order this one, and it arrived today. Setup was super easy, download of my current antivirus program and other things I needed to install went without a hitch, this thing is awesome!!!

Should I experience any problems down the road I will add comments, and I'll add an update as I get more familiar with the machine. But so far, so GREAT! And it hasn't gotten hot at all after several hours of work on it already, whereas the heavy Dell always needed a fan underneath and still blew hot air.

This laptop is a lot of bang for the buck, go for it!

I once was a big fan of Toshiba and its customer service. Not after my last two laptops. We bought this laptop for our son. Five months after the purchase, the operating system just shut down. I used a Linux startup disk to get to the hard drive to grab copies of his summer term papers. But the Toshiba rescue disks would not boot up -even though the Linux disk did. So Toshiba charged me $25 to ship the laptop to their repair facility. The repair facility tells me that the operating system is corrupt and that is not covered by the warranty. So they wanted another $25 to reinstall the operating system. And I am almost 100 percent sure this crash was NOT caused by a virus or spyware. I used to work someplace that cloned hard drives for our computers, and often the clones were crap and only worked for a short while before crashing. I think this is exactly what happened with this Toshiba, and they charged me to fix their defective product. I want the quality, customer-oriented Toshiba I knew in the early 2000s, not this passive-aggressive company that seems to think if the customer is unhappy it is the customer's fault.

UPDATE: The "new" Toshiba hard drive has crashed again, less than three months after the "repair." I'm not even bothering with Toshiba this time. I'm taking it to a local shop as if it never had a warranty. Why would I pay them another $50 to do another "warranty" repair.

I purchased this computer because I had an older one that lacked a web cam, and thought I'd just go ahead and purchase a new one and link the two computers. Firstly, the web cam picture was extremely blurry. Secondly, I was unable to link the two computers because the instructions were so confusing. But worst, it is impossible to get Toshiba customer service representative on the telephone. I got recordings, day after day, that because of the holidays their reps were busy but there was no holiday. And unlike companies that realize that they have long hold times and offer to call you back when someone is available, Toshiba just leaves you hanging, which runs up your cell phone bill.

This is a great laptop. First, let me say, I'm a software developer, so I'm very particular about my computers. I was in the market for a new laptop. After a lot of shopping around, I went with a laptop from HP for around $700. It was my first PC with Vista, and it was frustratingly slow. Here's an example... Put your laptop into sleep mode. Come out of sleep mode, and how long does it take to connect to your WiFi network? The HP laptop would take about 45 seconds while the macbook takes less than 5 seconds. It's a small detail, but it's the tip of the iceberg.

So, after I purchased my HP laptop, my wife bought a macbook. I was so impressed, I took mine back and got my own macbook. The battery is great. I haven't timed it yet, but it's easily over three hours. The LCD is great. You don't get all that bloatware that comes with a new PC (like antivirus software that you can't seem to delete) that fills up your new hard disk. And, there's no need to even worry about antivirus software since 99.9% of viruses are designed for Windows.

As for performance, these macbooks are plenty zippy. And, yes dual core does make a difference. If you like to multitask (browse the web while playing mp3 music), then you'll notice the difference. The user interface is more responsive during heavy loading. Just for fun, I took a program I wrote for work and ran it on my new macbook. (I won't bore you with the details of what it does, but it's CPU intensive.) On the HP laptop, the program took about 13 minutes to run. On the macbook, it took 3 min, 30 seconds. Just for fun, I ran the same program on a fully loaded Dell 820 ($3000), and it finished in about 3 minutes. So, I'm very pleased with the performance of this macbook.

And, there are great open source (free) applications you can get for Mac OS X now. So, I quickly installed Firefox, Thunderbird (email), NeoOffice (MS Office replacement), Chicken of the Sea (VNC client), XAMPP (Apache/PHP/MySQL), Transmission (BitTorrent), Burn (CD/DVD burner), and Eclipse (Java development).

The only way they could improve this macbook would be to bundle the DVD writer in the entry-level model instead of a combo drive (CD writer, DVD reader). It's not an issue with me since I have many other DVD writers on my LAN, but others may want to purchase the next model up that comes with the DVD writer.

This is my first Mac computer as well, after many years of using Windows PC at home and at work. I'm very impressed with both Macbook and OS X. Macbook, performance is awesome with just 1g of ram memory.

From the first time Mac user, I'm very pleased with Apple hardware and software, it just works. And I'm impressed with how it all works together.

As for this specific version of the macbook, I have found no problems at all, works beautifully as advertised. The only thing I found is that mabook's screen needs to be calibrated or adjusted. Don't settle for default screen profile, pictures will appear washed out. Calibrate screens settings; you should be able to get it pretty close to what it should be with just what macbook has in OS X.

I also recommend buying this model, since it has a bigger harddrive, its worth it. This laptop is very fast and reliable!

I will try to give a unbiased and responsible review of this MacBook. As a college student I struggled with the decision between purchasing a Windows laptop or a MacBook, but due to all the horror stories out there about Vista imcompatibility and my previous Windows nightmares, I decided to give Mac a try. I don't regret it. The screen is glossy and beautiful, albeit the 13.3" screen can make the font in programs (especially in instant messaging programs) a bit small. You can adjust the font to larger size in, say, AIM, but then that would render the person you are talking to to receive ridiculously large font sizes from you as well. And, if you are new to MAC OSX, there is definitely a learning curve and an experimental phase, so you should be patient; fortunately, there are alot of MAC OSX tutorial sites on the web and resources as well. I love the fast fast FAST boot time (around 20 seconds!!!) from off to on. BRAVO!! And the 2.0 ghz processor is more than enough for me. The MacBook is also very very silent. One thing I don't like though is the mouse track pad. Even on the fastest sensitivity setting, it just doesn't keep up with my fingers. A bit annoying, but a problem that can be solved with an external USB mouse. Let's see how my MacBook holds up in the next four years.

[UPDATE: Written 18 months after the review below: Compared to my iBook this machine proved better built (on the outside), maintained a tighter-action keyboard, was noticeably faster--for 15 months, at which point the hard drive simply, suddenly, and unexpectedly, died.] It's predecessor, the iBook, on the other hand, developed problems like letters disappearing from the keys of the keyboard along with the keyboard action becoming sloppy, loose, and chattery. I'd rather replace a keyboard than a hard-drive any day, but I probably got my money's worth out of both machines (Apple's least expensive models). If I had to do it again, I'd order the extended warranty plan with any Apple laptop. It's expensive, and it's not guarantee (if Apple judges the damage due to the user's incorrect or inappropriate use of the machine), but if it's a laptop and it sees heavy use, the two extra years are probably worth the several hundred extra. (With desktop models I'm still inclined not to buy the extended warranty.)}

I ordered my last small-screen iBook from Amazon just two summers ago. As usual, my heavy touch started shorting out the keyboard, and I couldn't afford several weeks of down time. Factor in the wait, the cost of repairs, and the improvements, and this 13" MacBook from Amazon seemed the best way to go.

It's about a hundred bucks more than the prior edition but worth it. The screen is wider, sharper and brighter (though I had no complaints with the predecessor). The speed of unloading internet pages is noticeably faster, a time-saver. The magnetically attached power cord should save the user the cost of an Apple adapter or two (about $80 each time you snap the thin wire). The keyboard area is larger, which is nice, though the different feel of the tracking area and right thumb-click (little play--it barely seems to go down) takes a bit of getting used to.

I didn't need a built-in camera or remote control, but what can you do. At least I was able to avoid the Superdrive (haven't found much use for DVD burning) and all the extras (and sales tax) they push if you buy from Apple Store. This machine doesn't require any additional memory or RAM, unless you're a heavy duty movie editor/audio engineer. It's a one-click purchase. I even took a pass on Apple's current iPod incentive (I still buy CDs, mostly from Amazon).

Even as I type this review, I'm conscious that the keyboard has a tighter feel and is quieter than the previous model. It also gets around in the often cumbersome and sluggish MS Word more quickly than the comparable machine of only two years ago. A great little work horse, and the transfer of information from your old computer has never been easier (make sure you have a firewire cable handy).

I have been used to blazing fast desktops for years. This mac really combines all of the great features and capabilities you would expect from a powermac into a great little package.

I love the display, the ease of setup, the keyboard, ...

I thought the gloss display would bug me, but I love it.

Not sure I will want to go back to my desktop now that I have the freedom of wireless!

On thing I will note: The white plastic is like static cling. Dust, hair and dirt just love attaching to it.

ALSO, this does NOT come with a VGA adapter. If you plan on giving presentations, you will need to pick one up.

I bought the G75-BBK version, it came out before all of the TS71/72/73 versions. It came with 8 GB of DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, a 1TB SATA hard drive, 2GB Geforce 660M video card, quad-core 3rd gen core i7 2.3 to 3.3 GHz CPU, 17.3" matted display (unlike the shiny G74 display), backlit keyboard. I added in 8 GB more of DDR3 RAM 1600 MHz, and a 256 solid state drive this machine absolutely screams. It was on sale at best buy for $1150 which is quite amazing for a non-online deal. I play battlefield 3 turned all the way up in on graphics, diablo3 all the way up, star wars the old republic, and some other games. Planning to get guild wars 2 when it comes out. Any of the G75's you go with will be good to run the latest games I would say for at least 2 years or more. From the ASUS site you can install the webcam visual ID login, so the webcam ID's your face and automatically logs you in if it knows it's you. Updated the turbo boost monitor to version 2.5, update the turbo boost monitor, get manuals and other drivers and asus apps, support, etc.

The only thing I wish is that the video card they chose was an Nvidia MXM type. These are the only laptop video cards that are currently upgradeable, and are found very rarely, in very few laptops. You have to specifically look, and I was not doing so at the time. Regardless, it will run whatever you need for multiple years to come.

This laptop, also found at local brick and mortar stores, has a lot going for it in terms of specs:

* 17.3" screen of good quality (for a TN panel)

* 1TB HDD

* nVidia 660M video (a 670m would have been nicer)

* Two HDD bays (both having aluminum holsters)

* 8GB of RAM, with two empty RAM slots available to upgrade to 16GB(DDR3-1600)

* Backlit keyboard (average quality)

* Windows 7 Home Premium (Professional might have been better)

* Multiple video outputs, including a mini-Displayport for monitors that use that connector (e.g. Apple Cinema Display). This is a welcomed surprise as I use an ACD.

Load temps (using CoreTemp 1.04RC) reveal the current temps of all 4 CPU cores:

idle temp: 39~44C.

under load: 59~66C.

Load was generated by running Skyrim, at 1920x1080, with ultra-high anti-aliasing settings (AA:8, AF:16), for 18 minutes and 37 seconds. With the default texture files; I have yet to update these, as I was told that downloadable texture files really enhance the experience... And, man, the quality of the graphics is GORGEOUS, with a very lucid frame rate... (up to 50FPS, my XBox version runs at 30FPS... I almost prefer 30FPS as it feels more like a feature film. 50FPS is close to the motion video standard of 60FPS...) I should say there was some choppiness at times, but that was BEFORE I downloaded the latest video driver, and people are recommending AA:4 and AF:8 instead. Either way, I've few gripes with the video subsystem. Now, back to temperatures:

While idle temps seem a tad high, load temps are PHENOMENAL for a high-res game at full settings, especially as it's hard to hear the fans running! Another laptop I own idles at 35C but under load goes up to 90C and it sounds like the fans are going to take off and fly around. A laptop I returned idled at 45C and under load got to 101C. Do note that water boils at 100C... I did also notice that a CPU temp reader did jack up the idle temp by 5C, which was bizarre... I did not use any utility internal to Asus.

Sadly, the battery is a bit wimpy and can only sustain the machine for ~3 hours... If you're a student, get an external battery to plug in, in case you can't find a power outlet. This may be a gaming PC, but the CPU will compile Java, VB, C, and other code faster than dual-core systems.

Also, the lack of Optimus technology means it won't shut down the nVidia GPU to enable the integrated Intel GPU embedded in the CPU in order to extend battery life... but this is a gaming machine, Asus decided to not bother with dynamic graphics switching... yet part of me would have liked the dynamic video card switching to save on battery life... especially in a classroom setting, despite the logo "republic of gamers" for all to see. :)

I upgraded the RAM. The back cover has one screw, and once that is removed, the cover has plastic tabs keep it *firmly* in place. Too firmly... it shouldn't be hard to open. One needs a spudger to pry off the cover. One could use a knife, but a spudger is completely plastic and is less likely to mar the case.

The second HDD bay has an aluminum holster, so you don't need to buy it separately online. That's a big plus. This model also has two empty RAM slots. I filled those right away.

All of the new RAM was instantly found (DDR3-1600, 2x4GB modules). With 16GB, one can run two or three virtual machines with complete fluidity. If you're studying for MCSE certifications and need to install and run servers in a virtual setting.

The keyboard quality is fair. Not as good as one higher-cost laptop of similar hardware specs, but it's passable. Especially as the integrated wristrest is far and above the comparison laptop with the better keyboard (but no wristrest!

And there is only one LED under the spacebar (left side). Seeing photos online confirms this.

All in all, it's a fantastic laptop that allows much expandability, is fairly rugged, and most importantly remains cool and won't fry eggs (or anything else) while being used. If only the keyboard was a tad bit better, and the battery life longer (by an hour or two), but those are minor nitpicks...

I've had my G75 about 3 weeks now so I've pretty much got everything set up how I want it and have had some time to kick the tires a bit. Runs everything I throw at it without a hiccup, Battlefield 3, everything maxed out, Skyrim with tons of High Res mods, Crysis 2 maxed out, no problems.

I've seen people complain about the sound, I haven't noticed any issues, certainly nothing that made me question what was wrong.

Earlier today Asus posted on their website mentioning that the display on the G75's display beat Apple's Retina display for color accuracy, so that's a big plus, and I will say the 1080p screen is nice!

I thought the matte finish of the exterior was going to be a fingerprint magnet but it's really not.

The only negative I can see is the 54000rpm HD, this is something I'll probably rectify pretty soon, just to put my machine's performance even more over the top.

It was a good buy, I'm really happy with it thusfar, I'll add any notes or discrepancies as the life of my machine continues.

Great base system. I wanted to get a desktop replacement system at a great price and upgrade the components at my own. The Upgrades I did were 2 OCZ Vertex 4's in Raid0 and upgrade 8GB of ram to 32GB! This particular model G75VW-BBK5 is the more base model, so the money I saved I could invest into the quality parts I want. Installing the RAM was easy and didnt involve breaking any warranty stickers.

Pros: Upgraded to 32GB after for just $140.

1.1Gbps benchmark in Raid0 is absolutely insane. Things open before I click on them, its that fast!

Chiclet keys, Lightup keyboard, not on the "W" key to help train me to use asdw keys for gaming(grew up using cursor keys)

17" full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution

Cons: Having trouble getting Nvidia Linux Drivers 310 working, current or experimental. Eventually need to invest in a larger bag to transport this laptop.

Other Thoughts: Ubuntu install did alternate ubuntu 12.04.1 install disc for raid support and installed grub to the volume0 array. Ordered a 12.7mm HDD Caddy to replace the base DVD drive, put the slower 1TB 5400rpm drive it came with in there.

THINGS I LIKE ARE THE LIGHTED KEYS, NUM PAD, AND LARGE CRISP SCREEN. I RATE THIS A 5 FOR PEOPLE THAT LOVE TO GAME. I PURCHASED THIS TO PLAY A FEW GAMES BUT NOTHING A 400-500 LAPTOP COULD NOT HANDLE.
