GT60-ONE

Just a little backround, I build my own computers and also do so for my friends and family, probably about 20 or so over the years. I am not a professional, nor do i claim to be any type of expert, however i do have a decent amount of insight and knowledge in modern PCs. I also do a lot of research on the components i buy.

First let me start with the Cons, so you know upfront what you are dealing with.

This laptop is quite large and heavy for a 15/16 inch laptop, which is to be expected for a gaming laptop. The laptop is about the size of most normal 17" laptops. It is about 15 3/8"W x 10 7/16"D x 1 9/16 in the front to 2 1/8"H -this includes the feet in the rear. Whether you deem this "portable" is based on personal preference and uses. For me, being basically a portable Desktop that i can take to other locations, it is definetly portable and i dont mind carrying this around. (I have a tablet and a phone to use for light web surfing/social/media applications/checking scores etc)

The power brick is also quite large but yet a little slim at 6 3/4"x 3 1/4" x 1 9/16". You should basically expect to use most 17" laptop bags/carrying cases/backpacks.

Turbo Fan setting is loud, I would liken it to tower style fan (home fan, not desktop tower) on high setting loud. However while the noise level gets up there, it isnt irratating loud and has very little whine to it IMO. Seems like a great feature to use while alone and using headphones as the cooling boost is nice. Of course this can be turned on/off very easily

Windows 8.... still havn't found a reason to like it, it feels a bit more clunky to use than Windows 7. I am debating installing windows 7 back onto this computer.

No SSD, for the price it is debatable whether this is a negative, I installed my own SSD on the side so i can have a boot 250GB ssd and use the 750GB as a disk drive. Performance does suffer compared to any SSD laptop, so for the price i would definetly recommend an SSD.

There is shiny plastic around the screen, which sometimes can be annoying if it gets hit with the right light angle.

So with all of that said, here is what you get.

For basically $1900 -$2000 w/Mail in rebate (price of SSD included) you get:

GTX680M probably the reason most of you are looking at this laptop, It is also the 4GB version. This thing performs. Dont expect 680 Desktop performance, but for something you can carry around, you play most games at Ultra, or high and get great FPS. My 3Dmark 11 (No Overclocking) scores are about 6200 or 3000 or so less compared to my Ivy I7 GTX670 4GBVRAM Desktop. Keep in mind my desktop graphics car alone is probably 1/3 the size of this entire computer!

Optimus I get between 2 1/2 Hours to 3 1/2 hours off the plug depending what am doing. Keep in mind though that performance is throttled down when off the plug, so dont expect full performance off the plug. To me this is exceptional for a gaming laptop with desktop performance.

I7 3630QM slight upgrade from standard I7 Ivy QM, probably not much difference, but nice upgrade.

12GB Ram dont need to put extra ram in which saves some $.

15.6" 1080P Matte HD screen This screen is really really nice. Comapred to my desktop screens which are samsung LED's of last year, the screen on my laptop is noticibly better. It is bright, and clear, and most importantly has no glare (switching from an Alienware this is a huge difference). It is not one of those 95% NTSC High Gamut screens, however it also does not need color calibration programs which can be tricky to operate in some games and look off without proper calibration software, and also all of these screens cost extra on top if you buy Clevo Chassis Laptops.

Steel Series Keyboard this is one of those preferences, but i like the keyboard, it has a nice feel to it, and the backlight and customization are nice. Keys aren't quite full mechanical, but also not close to mushy like a lot of other laptops, a little firmer than my alienware which i liked for gaming. The keys have to me a 3/4 satisfying click of a mechanical keyboard id say, which is pretty darn good for a laptop keyboard.

Blu-Ray Burner! Pretty awesome to have a blu-ray burner not that i would burn any movies or anything. I think all nice laptops these days should come standard with atleast a blu-ray player. It is definetly a plus to be able to watch blu-rays on this nice of screen on the road without having to carry an extra drive. Also Blu-ray Disk rewrittables anyone?

Dynaudio Speakers I can say that these are without a doubt the best speakers I have personally heard on a laptop. The sound quality is really impressive for laptop speakers. The sub isnt that powerful, but the overall sound quality is really exceptional. I'm not an audiophile, but I have a decently trained ear. A lot of people try and compare these to their 5.1 or 7.1 home speakers saying how its not that good, but there is no comparison IMO because i am not going to carry a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system or even a 2.1 speaker system around with me ever.

Killer 1202 Fast Dual band 2xMIMO wifi card, and also has bluetooth. Very impressed with the speed of the Killer Wifi cards overall.

750GB 7200RPM HD + (should add) SSD IMO this isnt too bad a deal. just add in your own ssd and use the 750gb as a disk drive since it is atleast 7200 rpm.

Has a nice combination of ports, no DVI, but it has HDMI, displayport, and VGA, USB2/3, esata ports. Also I like that the Ethernet port is on the back, I didnt like that my Alienware had the Ethernet on the side.

Cooling works well, laptop stays cool even during gaming. I havn't run any prime test because this thing performs perfectly for what I wanted to do out of the box minus the SSD and probably windows 8.

Build Quality Brushed Aluminum Wrist area and back cover, lots of plastic everywhere else. Doesnt bother me other than fingerprints, however I have not met too many laptops that are not fingerprint magnets! Overall Build Quality is good, not macbook level, but until macbooks can fit a 680M and/or even come close to the price with that card, I think this is your best bet if you want a GTX680M Gaming Laptop.

So In Summary,

Here were my guidlines

Must have:

Intel I7 Ivy Bridge

GTX680M-4GB or AMD 7970M (680M prefered due to speed and optimus if included)

1080P Screen nice looking hopefully:)

Killer 1202

Like design (Obviously preference)

Let me start out by saying I wanted the Asus G75 or G55. I like the design, and i actually buy Asus over MSI unless price is more of a concern.

Here is too me what is wrong with each of the computers and why I did not buy them.

Asus G55/G75 Weak Video cards, great design, but 660m-675M just doesnt cut it for me, especially for the same or more $.

Alienware IMO comparable to Apple Build quality. All these people who rag on alienware, they probably are just haters or just repeating things they heard. They are actually not overpriced anymore, and have the best warrenty/service and build quality of the gaming manufactuers IMO. But their prices are still too high for certain configurations and they do overcharge for add ons. Their best deal was for a 7970M, however while the 7970M is comparible, the Enduro issues and the fact you have to add on the 1080P screen just made this laptop too expensive for the configuration (considering how well priced the GT60ONE is). Oh and they charge Tax which adds on.

IbuyPower Best hardware for price, build quality and brand is questionable still. Very intriguing, however Not looking to burn 2K on a brand i dont really knowthey used to be mostly a pc building operation.

Samsung Nice build premium price, 675MX which is about 30 percent slower than the 680M.

Clevo Brands more expensive for same build, custom build time. I was set to get a sager or mythlogic, however the better speakers, better 720P webcam, better keyboard, mic not being on the keyboard all drove me to the MSI. Basically for what i paid overall, I am spending $200-$300 less for the MSI that has better speakers, about the same build quality, a better keyboard, better warrenty, 2HDD bays instead of 1, and I can buy it from Amazon!

Overall I am very pleased, It is a Great computer. Still trying to get used to windows 8. What really set this over the top for me is the speakers. I watch a lot of movies/netflix when I am on trips along with gaming. These speakers do not disappoint. Oh an Very little bloatware!

I've had this laptop for just over a week. I installed an SSD in the second drive bay and had a pretty annoying experience completing a clean install my Windows 8 Pro license, but that is not MSI's fault in any way. I ended up having to install Windows 7 and then "upgrade" to Windows 8 in order to get my install to work.

Now for the good:

This thing performs as expected based on other reviews and the hardware included. It handles everything I've thrown at it thus far with ease (Total War: Shogun 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Borderlands 2) on high/max settings. It gets a bit warm in the upper left hand area of the keyboard under heavy load, but not disturbingly so. The speakers are very nice for a laptop. The potential volume output is great. The multi-touch pad is acceptable but nothing special (as in don't expect Apple touch pad like response, but you can 2 finger scroll and swipe in from the sides).

The not so good:

The build quality appears to be pretty bad. My unit has a few apparent problems. The plastic panel to the left of the power button pops out and will not stay in place. The backspace key is finicky and has to be hit just right to consistently respond. The keyboard itself doesn't seem to be fitted properly. There is a noticeable bulge/warp to it around the o/p/bracket keys. I'm probably going to need to make a warranty claim on it, but I'm concerned they will deny it because I "tampered" with the laptop by installing the SSD. I'll update on that later, if there is anything to report.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance of this thing, but am disappointed with the build quality. When I spend this kind of money on a laptop, I want to feel completely satisfied with my purchase. In this case, that cannot truthfully be said. If MSI stands behind the product and gets these issues taken care of, I will be a very content/happy customer!

I own the MSI GX660R so I have enjoyed that enough to purchase another MSI Gaming Laptop.

Build Quality and Stuff:

I recently purchased this computer from another reseller and so far I have had zero complaints. I own the 15.6" variant so I could fit it into most laptop bags. The build quality is very good. It feels solid throughout. The body is mostly brushed black aluminum and the keyboard feels very sturdy,(more than the GX660R, mostly plastic body). It has a Steel Series brand keyboard which is an attempt to make it like a mechanical keyboard for laptops. They did a good job too because typing on this computer is a joy for me. The GX660R would flex a bit, but not this keyboard. It also lights up just like you see in the picture. It is fully customizable in color so you can make it what you want. It can light up in different modes as well. The sound system on this computer is the best I have ever heard for a laptop. Its not some low budget sound system I hear in most other machines. My build uses the stock screen and I must say that screen is amazing. The clarity is just brilliant. I wanted to get the 95% color gamut but couldn't justify it as I would mostly be using an external monitor (ASUS VE278Q). The laptop screen blows the doors off my external monitor though. The touchpad is nice as well. Although I rarely use it, it gets the job done. Built-in webcam is clear. Hinges on this computer feel solid. I have had zero issues with my previous MSI so I only expect improvement from here on out.

Performance:

This machine is currently able to run every game I have thrown at it. That isn't saying much in my opinion. What matters is that I can run mostly every game at the highest graphical settings in the native resolution of 1920 x 1080. Now that is saying something. The frame rates on this computer are sometimes choppy though depending on the game. Maybe I can get some feedback from someone who has encountered this problem and resolved it. I am currently playing Borderlands 2 and I get mostly 50fps but there are some instances where the frames drop to close to 16. I believe this to be a driver issue and here is why(Nvidia 310.90 Driver at the time of writing). If I stand still in that spot of low frames, the frames slowly ramp back up to the 50ish range (waiting 5 seconds or so). As I move around after the frames rise, they stay high and don't drop again until I arrive somewhere else completely new. Its like the video card doesn't know I need that power now, not in 5 seconds. I also am experimenting with the Nvidia Optimizer in hopes that this issue would be resolved, but no luck yet. I also signed up for the GeForce Experience but this appears to be in closed beta and I have not gotten an invite yet. I have also been playing WoW MoP, Saints Row 3, and BF3. All of these games pretty much run flawlessly and stay around 40-60fps.

I almost didn't buy this computer because I wanted to wait for the Haswell chip sets that I heard are coming out next but I think they were backed up to 2014 or something? Either way this machine makes me happy. I use it for everything, work and play. No regrets after 3 weeks of ownership. This machine is awesome.

My system is customized. It has all stock parts except:

I only have 1 hard drive, Samsung 840 SSD 500gb (updated firmware)

16GB DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM, 4 x 4GB SODIMM

IC Diamond Thermal Paste on cpu and gpu

BIOS Ver. E16F3IMS.50U

Bluray Reader in place or writer

3DMark 11 Score P6071 Video Benchmark

Honest reviews on MSI Computer Corp. GT60 0NE-403US;9S7-16F311-403 15.6-Inch Laptop

I agree with many of the reviews you'll find here. Its hard to find a more loaded laptop at this price. I looked at alternatives and this was the best value for the money.

I'd give this laptop a 5 except for MSI's customer service. After having the laptop for 2 months, the hard drive is failing. I reconfigured my system to boot Windows 7 from a SSD and I use the 750 gig that came with the laptop for data. I couldn't save any files, got errors from Windows 7, the chkdsk program loaded on startup, and the drive failed the smart test. I called MSI and they wanted me to first rule out a software problem by reinstalling Windows 8 on the hard drive. They wouldn't just send me a new drive to swap out. They wanted me to send the laptop to them so they could do the work.

That's crazy. My laptop is confugured how I like it. It actually ended up being less trouble to buy a new hard drive for $72 then reinstall operating systems and send in my computer to them so they can realize that the problem is the hard drive and install a new one. Not very customer oriented.

Don't think you'll be able to find a computer packing this much power for the price. If you're a gamer, you'll love it. It can be a little on the heavy side and the AC adapter is a brick but I'm satisfied with the purchase. I wish that it had a volume control on the side instead of having to use the function keys. Speaking of the keyboard, it is very tactile and the color changes are awesome.

I bought this laptop after my HP died prematurely. The design and aesthetics of this Dell caught my eye as did the 6GB of memory and the huge hard drive. In hindsight, though I like this computer so far, I wish I'd shopped more extensively and looked at more laptops in the flesh.

I dove into my control panel (not that easy for me with Windows 8) and see that I have a Windows Experience Index of 5.2 on this Dell. (using a scale of 1-9.9) Other numbers: hard disc 5.9, Processor 7.2, Memory 7.4, Graphics 5.2, Gaming Graphics 6.4.

The computer comes in a plain Dell box with a power cord and minimal documentation and user help. Even the digital user's guide found on the computer hard drive is minimally helpful. In contrast my dearly departed HP came with lots of printed documentation and a large fold out schematic.

Likes -

The red outer case It's quite good looking.

The comfortable keypad

The huge hard drive

Responsive touchpad

The sound is actually pretty good for a laptop. Using a FiGO mini speaker I get excellent sound quality.

Picture quality is excellent. Watching movies or viewing photos on this computer is a treat.

Issues -

I'd have liked more printed help and documentation than the two extremely thin pamphlets.

Don't look for free programs and aps on the hard drive. This Dell has bare bones content with mostly just what would normally come with windows. There's a "free" thirty day trial of McAfee virus program that was $80 to renew. When I deleted the program to install a Trend program, McAfee offered a 20 dollar discount on renewal.

Windows 8 I'm not crazy about it, but the new system is not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. Learn the shortcuts involving the windows key and navigation becomes much faster and smoother.

You'll need two hands to open the laptop with its tight hinges.

The speed is Ok, but not as impressive as I thought it would me. I only strain the system with my photos and even when working on photos there are occasional hiccups and slow responses.

Price I found out afterward that this same computer could have been bought at Costco for about a hundred dollars less. Since I'm not a member, the cost of joining Costco and then paying sales tax would have negated any savings.

Bottom line So far so good. I'm happy but not deliriously so.

I bought this for my husband for his birthday, a little worried about how he would like the specs on it. HE LOVES IT! The only problem he has with it is windows 8, it's going to take awhile to figure a fraction of everything out, but from what I've heard from friends who have windows 8 that its a tough operating program to understand.

I've had my new baby for just a few days now, but I absolutely ADORE her!!! She seems to have everything I need in a laptop. Windows 8 is a little quirky at first, but I'm learning my way around it and I'm confident that I'm going to like it better than 7. She is quick to power on and off and downloading the programs I need to run my jewelry business (http://www.etsy.com/shop/OracleMoonJewelry). I am so blissfully happy with this sexy candy-apple red laptop!!! She's my first Dell, and I have a feeling I made a wise decision!

This computer was delivered on time. It has a great feel and it is very responsive. The first thing I noticed was the brightness of the screen it is clean and sharp, and the colors really stand out. The keyboard is solid and feels nice when typing. The other thing I noticed is how light this computer feels; this has been sitting on my lap for hours and I hardly feel it. I think that for the money I made a great choice. I have owned Dell before and I had great results, I guess that is why I went back to it. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone.

I began purchasing Dell products in 1993 and bought 3 MP3 players, 4 laptops, 4 desktop computers, 3 printers, a camera and more. However, about 5 years ago, I noticed a sharp decline in Dell's customer service and quality of their products. So I purchase 5 MP3 players from Apple and Samsung, a laptop from Apple and another laptop from Acer, and 3 tablets from Samsung and amazon. Recently I have been reading some positives about Dell, although there are still complaints about their customer. So I decided to consider Dell again, but I wanted to still go through Amazon because of their customer service. I received the laptop in 2 or 3 days and it was great right out of box. I like windows 8 even though I am still learning. I really like this laptop and it was a good price. The processor is fast, there is plenty of hard drive space and memory. I highly recommend this laptop and for those who have lost faith in Dell to consider them again.

I am not a high tech person. I use my computer for Shopping, scrapbooking, social media. My daughters boyfriend (who does know computers) recommended this computer to me. It was easy to use. Easy to set up. I am able to work my way around it and maintain it. The only thing I wish it has is Keys that light up. I suppose if I had spent more time or money I could have found that. I can't think of anything else negative to say. It met my needs and was very affordable. My Teen daughter uses it for school projects and I have not heard any complaints from her.

I bought it mostly for the processor, which works like a charm. And compared to the laptop I was using which was kind of a cheap Compaq, which overheated a lot and for some reason didn't support higher forms of Java anymore, this laptop is like heaven on Earth. Although, sometimes it freezes and I have to shut it down completely, which it probably shouldn't do considering it's brand new. Also, when it goes to sleep when the lid is open, I have to restart it every time, so it's kind of a pain how time consuming it is just to turn it back on after it's been asleep. Maybe it's supposed to be like that if you don't close the lid.(?) But over all it's exactly what I expected and more. And I still think it's a better alternative to a Mac, because I don't like Macs.

got this from a friend who had an issue with the secondary better power going bad which caused the screen to not turn one, fixed it and is working perfectly. Works good with what I need(online gaming). Some times a little slow when you first turn it on but it's a 5 year old laptop running windows 7 along with world of warcraft, that's not bad. The issue with the screen not turning on seems to be kind of common(seen a lot of people posting about it on other forums and stuff) but it wasn't a huge issue, boyfriend fixed it in a few hours after taking it apart and removing the bad part and now works like nothing was ever wrong. I love this laptop.

I purchased the Lenovo SL410 after my trusty, 5 year old Dell finally died and I must say, I am extremely impressed.

For the price ($625), I have yet to see any others come close. In fact, this definitily seems like a much more expensive machine than it is. The design, although boring and old looking at first, has really grown on me and I have come to appreciate the simple beauty of it. No fancy case or buttons, just simple and easy to use features that always work instantly one pressed or used.

The trackpad is great and it even has the scroll feature on the right side, which is extremely useful when browsing the web. The keyboard is also of great size and response and is even spill proof! Really, it has drains which will drain any spilled liquid on the keyboard. I love this feature, since I replaced the keyboard on my old Dell TWICE for this reason.

Windows 7 has been great. I never owned a Vista, but did work on a few and it was awful. The Windows 7 that is installed in the SL410 has been wonderful. It is basically Vista with all the bugs worked out!

The number 1 thing about this laptop is the SCREEN! Not sure if its standard, bu the one i have has the glossy HD screen and it is unreal. HD video on this is bar none! Similar to the the screens on a Mac. Great!

A close 2nd favorite thing on this is the build-in Wi-Fi. WOW! My signal strenth is always powerful no matter where in my house. My sister has a Dell Mini Netbook, which she paid $550 for less than a year ago, and she cant get any wifi from her room. With the Lenovo, I have full signal strenth from my room which is much furhter from the wifi point in our house! Unreal.

I purchased this as a work travel/home laptop so I didnt need all the fancy media packages that HP and those other brands offer, but this thing has rocked for media. I am an avid photographer and this thing has no problem working with my DSLR, Flip Videos and other gadgets i have. I also use with my iPhone and iPod and have yet to experience issues or delay.

I did my research before purchasing and nothing in this same price point can compare.

I strongly reccomend this to anyone looking for a fast, reliable and efficient machine for work or play.

My HP died, found out that the HP DV2000 which I had was defective, problems with the motherboard would show up after 2-3 years of use. HP was aware of the problem and would fix it for me for $400 + shipping (my warrenty was up). Decided it was better to get a new laptop. Never again an HP! The Geek at Best Buy told me this was the laptop he bought, made by IBM and very dependable. He did not steer me wrong as far as I could tell. It takes a little getting used to Windows 7, I had Vista previously and XP on a desktop. But everything with this machine was easy, set up to internet, program installation etc. And it is fast!! Yes it is slow to start but that is Windows 7, Vista was slow also. Have the same stuff on this computer as my old HP and I still have tons of space on the hard drive. So far I am very happy. The think pad tools icon also is a help. I trust computer geeks when it comes to this sort of thing, he did not try to get me to buy a $1200.00 machine, this was half the price and it feels great.

Best Deals for Lenovo Thinkpad SL 410 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 4.1 Hours of

I have only used the SL-410 for about two weeks, so my experience is, admittedly, limited with this product.

Overall I would rate this a 4-star laptop, excellent for moderate business productivity. The screen is sharp, glossy, but so much that it catches glare coming from florescent lights, or through office windows. The keyboard buttons are large and I find typing fairly simple and easy. The mouse interface has both the "nub" (my own word) which is a characteristic red finger sensor that used to be common on most of the major brands but only remains on Lenovo laptops, and the trackpad, which does hiccup sometimes, so your cursor can jump around unintentionally if you don't use small gestures. I have no problem with either of these really.

Initially, when you boot up the computer you will encounter the telltale bloatware present on every new PC these days. My first boot up took nearly twenty minutes (18m:45s) and until I disabled all of the completely unnecessary programs running the performance was quite pathetically slow for a Core 2 Duo processor. However, I used the MSCONFIG utility (type MSCONFIG in the search bar of the start menu) to disable all of the bloatware on startup and when I rebooted the computer was a far more reasonable 3 minutes.

It was when I went to backup the system disks on the Lenovo partition that I ran into my first problem. I ordered the Dual Layer DVD rom specifically for a project that requires a lot of data backup, so when the system hanged after I put in the DVD-DL, I was distressed to discover that my laptop was configured with the CD-RW combo drive, despite the invoice and order information containing the part # of a DL drive. Lenovo's post-sales number (1.866.428.4465) gave me someone with imperfect English who told me to call technical support. I called the number from the invoice--and to make a long story short, I have been bounced back to post-sales and I am waiting to find out if I need to ship the whole computer back or if they can just send my a new drive. Since I don't think that Lenovo's DVD drives are modular the way that Dell and HP drives are, I think I must ship it all back. As it turns out, this is a good thing, as I have since discovered that my RAM isn't the 1066mhz DDR2 that I ordered, but 800mhz DDR2, which isn't really that much of a performance decrease, but still, I should have received what I paid for.

Anyway, I reduced my rating by 2 stars to account for each of these misconfigured items, and if my Lenovo return process goes well I will post a comment amending my review rating.

I was big IBM laptops fan since X31. But SL410 is last drop. I can't stand it any more.

My sound card messed up in less than 6 moth. I had to restore whole laptop to its factory defaults twice in less than a year. To be exact 9 month.

Despite having good spec, performance is just more than disappointing.

Sorry my French, but I'll never buy Lenovo crap any more.

Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. This is the most attractive notebook I've ever owned. Someone across the room heard a music video I was watching and said "that computer has great sound." It is great to have my numeric keypad back for crunching numbers.

Mobile broadband and 16GB flash drive USBs worked as expected. So did WiFi and a hardwired network. The 17.3" video is just awesome. This is my second, larger, notebook and I'll never go smaller again.

Very satisfied, great price and fast, free shipping from Amazon.

But not from Best Buy. My other laptop suffered some kind of disease and we're away from home, so I opted for a "cheap" replacement. 4 gigs of Ram (!!) and room for 4 more and a 320 gig hard drive are among the things that make this an outstanding buy. It's BIG and that's either it's strength, if you want a big screen and full size keyboard AND keypad; or it's weakness if you like small........

I'm a great fan of Amazon, but before you buy this gem, you might want to run over to your nearest Office Depot it's currently on sale for about a hundred bucks less........

This laptop has impressed me so far. Not only is it inexpensive, but it seems solidly built. It is very quiet. The screen is huge and looks great. It is powerfully enough for all of my home PC needs. The only 2 negatives are the weak sound quality (not unexpected in a laptop) and the touchpad buttons, which make a noticeable clicking noise when you press them. If you can live with those minor annoyances, I recommend considering this laptop for your home PC.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7005 TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

I was first looking at smaller sub-notebooks in the 11.6" 12.1" screen range. However, after trying that size out in a store, I realized 12" was an incredibly small screen. This laptop's screen is amazing. The size is perfect, the brightness is excellent, and the colors are vivid. Windows 7 Home Premium runs very well (you can tell the AMD dual-core processor helps with multi-tasking). Incredibly, even with a 17.3" screen, the laptop is very light and portable. The full keyboard with numeric pad is a great addition.

The only downside to the laptop is that it does not include HDMI out. This was disappointing considering that the screen is an HD display. It does, however, include VGA out, plenty of USB ports, memory card slot, and an SATA port.

If you are looking for a budget friendly large screen laptop, I would certainly suggest the Toshiba L555D-S7005. Also, there is a similar size/processor Gateway laptop in the same price range. However, before deciding on the Gateway, you should compare the customer service and warranties between Toshiba and Gateway. Toshiba definitely wins in this category. Gateway was bought out by Acer in 2007 and they are still getting their act together internally.

Great screen for viewing videos and site at 1600 by 900 resolution. May be a bit of a magnet for fingerprints but still a fast and great looking machine with plenty of RAM and CPU to run pretty much anything.

You will be VERY unhappy if you buy this machine. I see a few fake paid-for reviews here, but the fact is that the wireless performance is unacceptable. Lenovo tech support told me that the there is an antenna design flaw and there is NO TIME FRAME FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM. On it's website forum, Lenovo lied about fixing the problem on models manufactured after August 2012.

So this computer has all the specs you could need, SSD for Windows to run in, USB 3.0 for fast transfers, super light and thin. Only issue is that the trackpad seems very touchy, I wish there was a way to separate the buttons from the pad but so far I have not figured it out. Otherwise I would recommend this to others.

Best bang for buck laptop out there, I contemplating this and the ENVY 15 for weeks and I deciding to go for it. Awesome laptop, not going to find a i7 laptop with 750GB and features like this anywhere else. Excellent battery management and beats sound system is a bonus. The slick brushed steel gray front is very nice, as the black aswell. I wanted the slot loading cd drive like the ENVY but I couldnt justify the $500 difference in models. Also it seems that every laptop comes with a bunch of Crapware nowadays, but once you remove everything it's good. Don't hesitate, buy it.

Come on people all you need to do is click on the little box that says "Watch" and you can see all the specs on a PDF. I actually went to the website of the seller and found the computer listed on their website as well as called them. I also checked it out on HP.com This is one sweet laptop for the money. The technical description is incorrect. I've been looking for a good week now at the best deals and the only thing this laptop doesn't have is the blueray dvd, which I can live without.

I don't really planning on posting updates to my review in the coming months so here's what I have to say about the laptop so far:

Overall, it's been great for me. It's nicely designed and does everything I need it to do. I bought it planning to use CAD software in the later years at college. The display is okay, I wouldn't call it Macbook status, but I wasn't looking to be able to see imperfections on high quality pictures. The keyboard feels good in that key travel is comfortable. Not too short, not overly long either. The touchpad works well however I have found myself accidentally bumping it when I type which leads to me moving the cursor up to a higher line of text, potentially messing up what I have typed. Not really too big an issue, I have learned to work around it.

The few qualms I have with it are on the software side. IIRC, I picked mine up from Best Buy (shame on me) and the description mentioned it comes with Win 7 Pro whereas elsewhere it mentioned the laptop comes loaded with Win 8 Pro. I was looking for 7 as I'm not a massive fan of 8. I got the laptop, opened the box, and saw Win 8 instructions. There is also a Win 8 sticker on the underside of the laptop. Only problem, though not for me, is that it is actually running Win 7 Pro as advertised. Another problem I have had on and off is the fingerprint scanner will choose to not work once in a while. This isn't too bad as I also have a password I can type in to get past having to scan my finger. I use the scanner for ease more so than the security. I think it's safe to say that if someone stole your laptop, they would be able to somehow find a way to access your data. On that note though, there is Acer Business protection, or something close to that, which enables you to remotely delete data on the laptop if you do find the laptop's gone missing (this is if I actually read the manual correctly, don't take my word for that though). The other issue I have had is that sometimes when I wake the laptop from sleep, it's unresponsive. I try to open programs and it seems to lock down. The mouse still moves but nobody's home. This is if I go and immediately start a program though. I have learned to give it a few seconds, quite literally, after it wakes up to run a program.

Thinking about it now, I may try and update the review when I load CAD software onto the laptop. I'll see how it runs with the stock memory (8GB) and let you know if I can lock the computer up truly (I had that issue a few times running AutoDesk on a desktop where I worked previously).

I'm not sure how soon the laptop is going to be phased out, but I figured I should write this review if someone out there is still looking at this laptop wondering if it's a good buy.

This laptop excels at all simple task, including watching HD accelerated movies to working on an Microsoft Office document. The device comes with the normal version of Windows 8 pre-installed (which in some way kinda sucks), but the start menu issue can easily be fixed with downloading a 3rd-party start menu(Google "Start Menu 8") that will fit fine on the desktop of the OS. Working on task with the laptop computer i have not found any slow downs or crashes in progress. The laptop is great, If you do ever buy one there is a lot of bloat on the laptop, but it can easily be removed by uninstalling. This computer has an Intel Celeron processor and a Intel HD Graphics Family Edition which is not built for high end gaming, but indie games via Steam and many PC classics like GTA Vice City run well and smooth on the computer. This computer has a very crisp display and runs basic gaming and normal task very well. The camera is a budget camera, but is not bad. Its a very good computer, I would recommend it to anyone.

PS:Videos online strangely show GTA 4 and Saints Row 4 runing on the Intel HD Graphics Family Edition at 2.8 GHz and this PC clocks at 1.8 ghz. So Maybe high end games will work smoothly?

Horrible experience! Buyers beware. Toshiba Laptop was purchased in August for son at college. Never able to open Windows 365. Toshiba referred us to to a company, Teqkey. Teqkey charged us $100 for one-time diagnostics after which they said Windows 365 is corrupt, needs to be restarted but need software key. Key not provided to us by (we thought) Amazon.

Amazon points to a company, Two Cougars. Amazon rep explained that TC is basically the company from which we are purchasing the laptop. Five (5) messages later we are still trying to explain what we need. Nice looking Laptop . If only it was usable. Oh! And if we want to return it? Product must go to Toshiba.

Great reliability, tough, fast, workhorse, but on my third set of NEW hinges (they last about 3-6 months max before they start to become wobbly bad design, every one of these I've played with has the same crappy hinge problem).

I like being able to swap out the memory, hard drive, keyboard easily by yourself. Since Lenovo took these over from IBM, the quality has been going down, but this one is still nicely made (again, except the damn hinges!)

I reviewed the Lenovo 3000 N200 Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 Celeron M 540 / 1.86 GHz RAM 512 MB HDD 80 GB CD-RW / DVD GMA X3100 WLAN : 802.11b/g TPM fingerprint reader Vista Home Basic 15.4" Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA ) Microsoft Office Ready when I bought it earlier this year after my HP died. I had always been a big fan of the IBM Thinkpads and hoped that the 3000 N200 would be an economical replacement. Proving that you get what you pay for, I was very disappointed. I have subsequently wiped the N200 clean of Vista, installed Windows XP and gave it to my son. It works MUCH better under XP -much faster.

I had always wanted to get the T61 because... well, I like thinkpads. I like the feel of the keyboard. Their displays are crisp and beautiful and the build is solid and durable. But at the time, my budget just wouldn't allow it. But after a few months, I was finally in a position to upgrade.

I was a little hesitant since all my experience with Thinkpads had been while they were still being made by IBM. After my disappointment with the 3000 N200, I was concerned that the poor quality was indicative of Lenovo rather than just the model. But I decided to give the T61 a shot because frankly, all of the other brands out there (...cough... HP.... cough) are known failures that I had to try.

I'm VERY happy to say that the T61 is NEARLY as good as the IBM Thinkpad counterparts. The look and feel are still nearly the same. The display is probably the most similar to the old IBM thinkpads. The speed and all the Lenovo support features are excellent making recovery in the case of catastrophic virus infestation etc a breeze.

What isn't QUITE the same (and the reason I knocked a star off my rating) are a few relatively minor quibbles compared to the old Thinkpads. The keyboard doesn't feel quite as solid as I would like. The touchpad is smaller than usual -even smaller than the 3000 N200 (the one feature of that model that I actually prefer). In addition, the edge of the touchpad is very "prominent" so it is annoying when your finger is constantly bumping up against it. The case isn't quite as pleasing from a "tactile" perspective -it feels more plasticy. And finally, the finger print reader is not as good as the 3000 N200.

However, I can tell that the build quality of this system is substantially better than the lower priced models. In addition, it doesn't have the annoying "shiney" display which the 3000 N200 has and it runs MUCH quieter and cooler than the 3000 N200.

All in all, this isn't IBM's thinkpad but it is far superior to any laptop on the market today in terms of quality and it is truly worth the money.

BTW, my T61 came preloaded with Vista. I have subsequently come to the conclusion that XP is truly a better OS in terms of speed and reliability. Unless you can afford the extra 300-500 for 3gb of memory, "downgrade" to XP. Otherwise, you might as well stick with a used T41.

Best Deals for Lenovo ThinkPad T61 7658 Notebook

Let me tell you a story. A great many years ago, I had an IBM T30. That thing was a tank. It got dropped, battered, and abused. At one point it even flew out of a bicycle toddler trailer and into the middle of a road with very minimal damage. After the life that thing lived in my care, I sold it to a friend, who abused it for 5 more years before the motherboard gave up.

After that machine, I was sold on Thinkpads, and I saved up to custom build a T61. I ordered mine direct from Lenovo and had it customized... 4GBs of RAM, nVidia graphics, Windows XP.. Later on, I put a 500GB hard drive in it and Windows 7.

Lenovo carried on IBM's legacy with the Thinkpads. The quality on this unit is fantastic.

The casing is solid and reliable, all of the components are incredibly reliable. I've never had an issue with my T61.

This thing has been taken all over, dropped, stepped on, and battered. And it's taken all of this abuse with just one little piece of plastic breaking off. The lid hinges are solid stainless steel, the top is solid magnesium, the bottom is thick rugged plastic. This is one well built laptop.

The nVidia NVS Quadro graphics used to be able to play most games with ease. The most modern of games tax it pretty heavily though. Considering it's a business laptop and not really a gaming one, this is pretty good.

All features work well on it, including the kinda gimmicy keyboard light, which actually is quite helpful in the dark. Parts are readilly availble for it as well, so it's an easy machine to fix.

Lenovo's support is second to none. After reinstalling Windows on this machine, the only thing you need to download is the Lenovo update utility and it will take care of the rest. Never seen another manufacture do that!

The only things I've really had issue with is the power supply, which failed on me after a couple of years, and the sound card, which, like most modern systems, is this little Realtek thing that sounds terrible.

But, those are my only real complaints. This poor laptop has been through a lot, and it's been a tough little beast.

I would recommend this product.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad T61 7658 Notebook

I did not buy this laptop through Amazon but I wanted to share my thoughts here. I'm a poor counselor, living from paycheck to paycheck in highest-in-the-nation-cost-of-living state of Hawaii, and in college working toward my MSW. I needed a robust laptop to put up with college/work/personal life so I bought this T61 from a refurbisher for $130. It came with Win7, 80GB HDD, 2GB RAM and integrated graphics. Key tops were half-worn on the Home row and the LCD is wobbly from worn hinges. When closed, there is still a bit of play with the lid not latching down tightly. 6 years of existence and the laptop does creak a little on sides. I'm not complaining as this is a used T61 and I didn't expect roses.

I upgraded the HDD and RAM and installed Windows 8. The T61 boots/runs faster with all the upgrades. The non-glare LCD is easy on the eyes, although dimmer than other non-glare LCD's I've seen (this is likely not due to age, since I read similar comments written back in 2007 when the T61 was first released). The touchpad is the smallest I've ever come across on any laptop and took me a while to get accustomed to. The T61's Trackpoint is a relic from the 1990s and I feel is outdated as a mouse control device and useless like a human appendix or a vestigal tail is. Lenovo still insisted to include it (and still does to this day) apparently to keep Trackpoint fans happy. The keyboard is louder/noiser and less firm than other keyboards I've used on other business/professional-grade laptops; however perfectly usable and comfortable to type on happily for hours without fatigue. Speakers aren't loud; a bit tinny to my ears but clear. The LCD lid's rubber coating mars easily but is easily cleaned up with a wiping of Windex. Contrary to another review written here, the lid itself is not solid magnesium: instead, it is a composite plastic (not carbon fiber) over a magnesium frame. Its construction still does the job in keeping it solid and near-flexible. The T61 is of the "thin-and-light" category when "thin-and-light" was defined at around 4-5lbs (the weight of this T61 is 5.2lbs with the stock batt). I got a new 7800mah batt off Amazon.com ($25) which bumps the weight up past 6lbs. Thin, yes. Light? No.

Incidentally, batt life is 9+ hours with this new 7800mah batt under Win8 and in Power Saver mode, wifi off, and LCD dimmed to 50%.

My T61 is good, solid-feeling (and solid-looking) laptop. Everything just works. The T61's early-1990's conservative looks, severely angular lines and all-black color make it look either 20+ years old or modern and contemporary, depending on who's eyeing it (I just think it looks "classic"). Other resellers sell T61's with better specs for up to $400 (and likely in better condition than mine) but I'm happy with the one I got and the price I paid for it. //

The T61 is too hot to handle. Since it was new, the laptop is too hot to put on your lap and becomes very uncomfortable to even lay your palms on it while typing. It inadvertently goes into sleep mode at the most inoportune times due to overheating. I read some of the posts on the web and they suggest cleaning the air intake. However, I doubt it was clogged when I bought it new and it ran very hot then. It is so hot, you cannot consider this a laptop as you couldn't possible keep it on your lap. Makes it very difficult to use.
