I bought this laptop for my son. This is the first Windows laptop that we have bought in 2 years and our first foray into Windows 8. My last few laptops have been MacBooks, one of each of the last 3 generations. We decided to try a touch screen laptop as we thoroughly enjoy our tablets. This machine has been more than I had hoped. It's responsive and Windows 8 is extremely easy to use for basic operations that my son will be using it for. Easy set up, synch plug and go. No real hiccups so far. The screen is very nice and I am interested in how it will hold up as it ages. It's a little heavy but that suits his use just fine as he is not yet permitted to lug it out of the house. The keyboard is an almost odd size (coming from a new MacBook, the keys are much closer than the MB) but they keys feel solid. Also it's supposedly water resistant. I hope we really dont need to find out. The audio while not stellar (whiat laptop is?) is every bit as good as a Mac for general use. Who critically listens to anything on a lappy? Startup and restarts are reasonable far out performing the desktop that this machine is replacing (hard core custum built 3 years ago) so my son is happy. There are a ton of ports to use. We were going to use the second screen HDMI outs but the main user doesn't want to. Overall, we are very happy with this machine and it should serve us for the next few years.

Ok, lets get down to it for this unit. First of all make no mistake, this is not, and I repeat not a full blooded notebook or laptop. This is the next evolution in netbook. The description that Amazon has is a bit flawed and misleading in many ways which I have emailed them about. The "CPU" in this unit is actually AMD's new APU series of chipset that combine the graphics card with the CPU creating the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). While it is listed as a dual core, just remember that this is a dual core 1GHZ processor along the same lines as Intel's Atom CPU. With that said I will get down to the pro's and cons of this unit.

PROS:

Graphics: Video Playback. This unit has remarkable graphics performance. The chipset in this unit produces amazing clarity and smoothness when streaming from Netflix, HULU or from a DVD. I have experienced no issues with the video quality of the unit.

Monitor: The 1080i Screen this unit comes with further enhances the viewing pleasure with amazingly sharp crisp color and clarity. I've yet to see any other netbook or laptop with a screen this nice.

Audio: You have to hear these speakers to believe it. I was floored at their ability to reproduce clear crisp sound and bass with no distortion even at louder volumes. Not a room filling experience, but you wont need headphones to listen to your music or watch a movie with this unit.

RAM: 3GB of RAM that this comes with is more than suffice to power it on the vast majority of productivity applications and multimedia. I however opted to upgrade it to the max of 8GB to further help the sometimes anemic APU get through tasks. It was worth the extra $45 for two 4GB sticks of Kingston RAM.

Gaming: The all important question for a lot of you out there. This will play back basic disc based games and the basic online games. Steam works well on it, games like TF2 had no issues with it, but you are not going to be zooming through games such as WoW or SL as the APU just does not have the power to handle that demand.

Appearance: Don't let the word (Mocha) fool you into thinking the entire device is coffee colored. This unit's visual design is a winner all around. The screen, keyboard and bottom of the unit are black like most laptops, the area surrounding the keyboard, the touch pad and speaker area are what is "mocha" colored, which is more of a deep and dark bronze color that is both subtle and visually appealing. It gives the unit a real look of class and that it's a lot higher priced than it is.

Keyboard & Touchpad: Win! The chicklet style of keys make typing a breeze on this laptop if you have small hands like me or huge hands like the rest of my family. The full keyboard along with the full number pad on the right side make it very nice to use. You wont have to get used to the layout of a cramped laptop keyboard and go hunting for keys on this unit. The touchpad is awesome, smooth to the touch, very responsive, supports multiple gestures and it's "palm proof" technology really works. Drag your hands across the pad and it will not register that as input, preventing you from making accidental input.

Case: The Ice cool technology really works, even after working this unit out hard core to see how far I could push it, the bottom of the case never got warm, the hand rest and keyboard area also never got warm, even in a room with a 82F temp. The fan is super quiet. it's lightweight and sturdy so you don't feel like you are going to break it by moving it around.

Battery: 8 hours easily. This was obtained from streaming a Netflix movie for 2 hours, playing around on Facebook games, video chat, google+ activity and then into web surfing for the remainder of the time. The battery also charged back up to 100% after just under two hours.

CONS:

Multitasking: Out of the box the unit is a bit anemic when it comes to multitasking. Adding more RAM does help this as do some of the suggestions at the end of this review. Once you iron it out, it tends to be acceptable, but if you are coming from a powerhouse computer, this one will drive you batty for awhile at it's response times.

Preinstalled ASUS Software I really don't know what they were thinking when they put on their own software. I know all manufacturers do this, but these programs were the entire reason the laptop out of the box was so sluggish. Some of them even when not running were hoarding 500MB worth of RAM, others had multiple instances of themselves running. The ASUS updater program that's supposed to update all your drivers should be removed immediately before it screws up your system totally. Mine decided to download drivers for the wrong unit and install them, which forced me to have to do a full recovery in order to get the unit working again. There is plenty of griping on ASUS's forums about the program and the suggestion there is to remove it.

Processor: While it is suffice for daily use, web surfing, emails, chats, streaming and the basics, it is not a power house nor a multi-tasker beyond a few low key programs at the same time. Otherwise it will start bogging down on you.

Overall, this is a nice unit with a lot of nice well thought out design features and quality construction. It is a good unit for a college student, high school student, casual web surfer, someone who just wants a laptop or for those who don't need massive computing power. Just do your research on the APU before you buy to see if this will handle what you want to do that I didn't cover in the review.

Suggestions: Remove the preinstalled ASUS software. None of it is mission critical, if you are worried that it may be, just look it up online or in ASUS's forums. Also when you get yours, check the hard drive partitions. Mine was....oh...screwed up at the factory for whatever reason and was partitioned into four partitions plus the recovery partition. I had to merge (easily done with Windows 7) all the partitions so I had only one partition on my drive (plus the recovery drive). Also since there is no physical media to recover this unit with. I strongly suggest making a recovery DVD after you get it all set up the way you want. That way if it dumps on you, you can use the iso to restore it without having to go through all the set up again, nor the over 600MB of Windows updates (yeah...that took awhile).

I have been looking for a new laptop for a while now, and I happened to find this one on amazon. I couldn't find too many reviews on it, but based on the specs that I saw I decided to buy it. This turned out to be a great decision. I am in the middle of high school, so I need something that will last a little while, and perform pretty well. This easily does everything that I need, and also has a surprisingly good battery life. This was the one thing that I was weary about when I bought it, but the battery lasts a good 5 hours on average for me, doing basic tasks, and some video watching. Considering the price, this is probably the best laptop you can find, even though it is a little bit obscure. It runs quite fast for me, and has everything that I could need in a computer.

I had heard that Asus computers had a good reliability record despite having a low price. When this showed up as a special offer on the Kindle screen saver I took advantage of the chance to save forty dollars. It isn;t lightning fast. But it is a nice notebook with a big screen. It is not hot on my lap like other notebooks. All for $270. Big keyboard. Looks nice. Good to have a backup computer. No state tax, free shipping. I shop everywhere, then buy Amazon.

Works well and is everything it is advertised to be. If you want to run more than one program, you may want to throw a little more ram in. all in all a great deal! Asus makes a quality product.

I had the criteria of 17" screen, high speed, and graphics abilities to develop Windows 8 Phone Apps and Windows 8 Metro Apps. This computer had it all, including 8 GB RAM and more than adequate HD space at 673 GB. All my former Windows 7 applications now run on the Windows 8 upgrade that I installed two days after my purchase of this computer. More than satisfactory!

Rec'd the laptop in excellent condition. the strange thing was the carton had the SKU blacked out, and there was a Sam's Club label visable. also visable was a Do Not Scan label, SKU intact. H/p verified that the computer had not been started before, and registered the warranty. I have used the laptop for less than five hours so far (01/03/2013) and all is good. I like the computers' features.

First off this was bought to be a gaming laptop. There is no reason to buy this if you are not gaming or need high end 3d graphics. I've been quite happy with it playing Guild Wars 2, Black Ops 2, and more. The fan can get a bit loud under high loads, but it's not obnoxious if you are wearing a headset like I normally am when gaming.

Pros: nVidia 680M, i7, customizable backlit keyboard, great matte screen, 2x 2.5" drive bays plus optical, great speakers

Cons: Taller than standard 15-16" notebooks, this can cause a bit of hassle trying to find a bag.

It is a very good configuration, but for the price I paid a SSD would be fair enough.

Nevertheless, it's a good purchase.

Reviews of Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Black)

Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G
Customer Ratings: 3 stars

Nokia Booklet 3G looks great and fashioned, little bit similar to Apple Macbooks Pro. It's nice to touch it, you'll feel the good quality of aluminum body. Everything seems good before you will turn on this netbook...

1. I don't know who was that crazy people who decided to use WINDOWS 7 on that device as a factory default!

It's TERRIBLY SLOW! Memory (RAM) is not upgradable and you have to be happy with 1Gb RAM ONLY!

I turned off all Windows 7 animations and other features. But even after that Nokia Booklet 3G can NOT play DVD/MPEG2 files without time delays. For what reason they placed HDMI out here? I can't use MPEG2 so it'll be absolutely impossible to use .MKV or other HD formats.

2. Display quality is very bad and absolutely not contrast. After Mac's, Nokia's dispay looks like faded, it's impossible to use it outside home at open sun you will see nothing! Use it only at night time outside home or in the car.

But I don't think it is a big problem. First was much bigger!

3. GPS works great with Google Earth after manual GPS receiver activation (you may google instructions). I don't like Nokia OVI and other Nokia software. Also you will not find preloaded maps here!

4. 3G workes great but I killed all Nokia and AT&T software because it was very unstable. What for I have to use it if Windows have all that software by the default? Don't use Nokia/AT&T software to connect to the internet! Lots of bugs there...

So. My conclusion is:

Nice outside, but horrible inside! The slowest netbook in the world!

I have bought this item couple of days ago. I can only say that with one minor exemption it's a perfect product.

Pros:

battery performance

display quality

3G modem included into main body

silence of work (no internal fan)

design and qualitybody shell and keyboard

Cons

expensive

GPS performance ( I cannot come to terms with itshame!)

basic software only

overall perfomrance not the best in class (not relevantunless you buy netbok for games)

Best Deals for Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Black)

I own a black Nokia Netbook which i bought for my wife to basically surf the internet. I bought it for almost half the list price when one of the stores had a great discount on. After using the netbook for a couple of months, here are my comments:

Pros:

1. sleek design-Aluminum uni-body construction comparable to apple computers

2. solid build-feels good in your hands unlike the cheap acer (which i also own!)

3. Battery Lifefantastic! Atleast 8 hrs between charges is what i get out of it.

4. Great Webcamhigh resolution and very good for chatting

5. Keyboardfeels good and has the spongy, cushy feedback

6. Internet connectivitygood network speeds

7. HDMI portgood to be able to connect it to you HDTV directly and play your home videos but the processor does not support playing HD Videos

8. DisplayHigh resolution (1280x720) 10.1" LCD display that works well even in a brightly lit sunroom

9. 3G-the SIM card slot comes built-into the device, so you have a choice to either use the 3G by inserting the SIM card into the slot or just use the netbook by itself without the SIM card. I dont use a sim card for 3G connectivity but it worked great when i tested it.

Cons:

1. Priceridiculous price. dont know what the folks at Espoo were thinking! Around $250 would have had this selling like hot cakes (Are'nt most netbooks in the market priced around that price??)

2. Processorslow. that makes multi-tasking a challenge

3. Ram1GB non-upgradable-Poor BUT if you pop in an SD Card in the slot, the machine automatically recognizes the free space and prompts to use the free space on the card as additional RAM. I usually pop-in an unused 2GB card in the slot when am not transferring photos and that really gives it a shot in the arm. This feature is a standard on all windows OS but you generally have to go to the control panel to set it up and it is set by default in the Nokia netbook-so thats a good thing

4. NO HD Video support-thats a bummer for such a fine piece of equipment. The processor is just too weak to handle HD videos. All you get is choppy videos! if only Nokia had used the newer dual core atom processors, it would have definitely given the competition a run for the money with HD Video support and built-in HDMI port

5. NO Ethernet PortI did'nt realize it till i went to a place where they did not have wireless internet and i wanted to connect this using the Ethernet cable and it was missing! I am sure the ethernet port would have fit in the dimensions of the netbook but it is missing!

Conclusion: This is a good product for the $250 I paid. It is good for surfing the internet and to watch SD movies on long haul flights without having to worry about charging the device frequently. It is handy enough that my wife can hold the baby in one hand and the netbook in the other when she is showing the baby off to the grandparents on skype! I take it to parties with me to show our pics to friends/family and have a good conversation. It fits well in my wife's handbag that we don't have to lug a laptop bag nor a charger around in those parties! Overall, this is better than my acer netbook for doing the simple things in life. It is no way a gaming machine nor a home media center substitute but is just fine for everyday tasks like browsing, facebook, email, twitter, video chatting etc.

Honest reviews on Nokia 10.1-Inch Booklet 3G (Black)

I bought a used in good condition blue Nokia netbook about $250. I really like it. Aluminum body look like Apple Macbooks pro. Light weight easy to go around. Silence of work (no cooler fan) and long life bettery about 12 hours. High resolution (1280x720) 10.1" LCD. HDMI made you watch HD movie on HDTV easily. I upgraded Window 7 starter to home premium. That's good to watch MKV HD media file smoothly. lt is the best 10.1" netbook today.

This is an excellent laptop as well as a very good value. I did much research on the web and on foot.

I found nothing else in stores or online that was as much computer with equal price. I would recommend

this laptop to anyone on a tight budget. Service and prompt shipping made the deal even better.

I must beg to differ from the positive reviews given so far. Yes, the screen is bright and 16:9 (HDTV aspect ratio); yes, the computer wakes up and works quickly; but basic flaws in the physical layout of the machine make using it often a huge headache.

The worst element of the design is the trackpad. Large trackpads are nice--but the reason Apple's giant trackpads work well is that they are smart--they know the difference between an intentional finger swipe and the accidental touch of a palm. Even after six weeks of using this laptop, I still find myself accidentally brushing the trackpad with the meaty part of my thumbs while typing--and moving the cursor halfway across the screen. All of a sudden, I find myself typing 30 lines further down my email, or worse, the cursor lands on a navigation button and directs me away from the website I was typing on, resulting in me losing my work. Another major flaw of the trackpad is that rather than give a true left and right click button, HP chose to put one long plastic strip across both buttons, which is supported from underneath in the center. You cannot press the middle, and the further you get from center, the easier it is to click. This means that the natural spot to left-click is nearly four inches away from the natural spot to right-click. This makes all sorts of tasks like cutting and pasting, renaming folders, et cetera, far more awkward than they need be.

The keyboard is also awkward, with a strip of audio control buttons to the left of tab, caps lock and shift. This results in many accidental presses of Caps lock. Also, the speakers are extremely quiet, even at maximum volume. Not great if you want to use it as the multimedia machine it otherwise could be.

Bottom line: if you have $400 to spend on a laptop, you can do a lot better than the HP 620.

Honest reviews on HP 620 WZ294UT 15.6" Notebook (2.3 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core

I bought this laptop for temporary use when my Thinkpad screen broke and I was waiting to get a replacement screen. I must say for its price, this laptop is a steal. It is fast, strong and works well. It's doesn't have a glamorous design, but who cares, as long as it woks well, I'm ok with it. So far, I haven't had any problems. The display is wonderful, much better than my thinkpad. The keyborad design is a little bit flat but its poses no problems once you get used to it. The trackpad is a little bit large and doesn't distinguish between the left and right click buttons but you can solve that problem by the use of a wireless mouse. To summarize: it offers value for money, fast processing, and if you can get beyond the keyboard and trackpad design, it is the best laptop you can get for a $350 to $400 price range.

Ater years of using HPs (and Compaqs before that) I switched to Vaio because they had a convenient screen size, I loved the Vaio experience. However, because they no longer make the 16.4" laptop I went back to HP, their 17" option seemed to solve my problem and I had heard good things about the Envy line.

To my disappointment and concern, as I will have to purchase something else, this computer is miserable to use. The keypad is slower than the Vaio and the mouse-pad is a nightmare, I have disabled most features and still it does whatever it wants, paints the screen blue for no reason, when I try to right click on a word to change spelling it brings up a menu strip and I have to repeat the operation, when I point and click something, half the time nothing happens until I try two or three times, a real nightmare.

I have no doubt that the computer is a good computer as computing goes, but as for easy of use, it is terrible! The problems I have described make me much slower, and the type of work I do depends on speed and output. I actually compared it by doing the same assignment on the new HP and on the old Vaio.

Yes, I can buy a mouse but I work on the road, and a mouse in my case is not really practical.

I regret having gone back to HP.

I am not a gamer.

I bought this from Circuit City for everyday computing and the processing and manipulating large photo files. The fast hard drive as well as the dedicated video card works great for that purpose.

As a refirb unit I must say that it arrived in perfect condition, well packaged and complete it its' minimal accessories. It show no evidence of being used .. ever. The lid is attractive and seems solidly made. It's not particularly fancy, but it has solid specs and seems like a good performer. Much, much better than my defective HP dv9910 that died an early death.

What I like most:

Overall Speed and video.

Fast 7200 RPM Drive

Decent processor speed

Dedicated video with 1GB of dedicated RAM

Quick boot time

Rubberized palm rest no fingerprints.

Lighted keyboard.

Very good speakers.

Very good venting and cooling. Look at it on Circuit City website. Good photos.

Nice screen (Not HD)

2nd drive bay available

Reasonable number of ports & connections

Minimal bloatware.

Well packaged for shipping.

The Bad: Very short battery life (1 Hr). Minimal 3 Month Warranty as a refirb.

This unit can generate some heat on AC. I bought a Targus cooling mat for it just to be safe.

In all I am satisfied. It meets my needs very nicely. If you are nervous about a refirb, relax, give it a shot.

Good value at $619 if it lasts. Only time will tell ...

Probably a bit late for this review as we bought this Christmas 1010. The computer runs great, has had no problems, has played all the games he likes that takes lots of memory and a good graphics card. The only consideration is that the battery only lasts about an hour or so, depending on what you do. The keys have an underlight and there is a great lighted design on the front. Wonderful picture. I own one of these too which is why they wanted one and am writing this review on it. I also own an Asus Netbook with Windows XP on it. I bought an external drive to load games, an extra gig of memory and I can hook it up to my TV and play older games on it. Love both of them.

Four star because of only one little thing about it, the cosmetic finish of Below the keyboard is like... ... Weak? the paint would get crashed even if it has no scratches... But is a LITTLE thing. GREAT LAPTOP AND REAT PRICE.

I run BLACK OPS "FULL GRAPHICS SETTINGS" 8x Anti Alias, ALL DETAIL FULL at 45fps aproximately. Crysis 8x anti alias all on high except for textures, physx and water, i set those 3 on VERY HIGH. like 40 fps... SO, wanna play? GET THIS ONE, wanna work? I render like 10x faster than i did with CPU render, ADOBE AFTER FX, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR... ALL CS5 MASTER COLLECTION, ABSOLUTELY COMPATIBLE WITH PROTOOLS LE 8 AND 9 (NEVER TESTED PROTOOLS HD)

Toshiba is one of the leading producers in high quality buiness laptop computers. They contain a variety of useful features.

One of the newest additions to toshiba is the Toshiba R950 laptop series. This laptop specializes in providing you with the best features. I should know. I use one at work, and many people in my company use one, too.

Because I am responsible for the procurement and distribution of computers for my company (One of the largest construction companies in Australia), I am in a position to review this laptop from my own experience.

This toshiba notebook computer features an Intel CPU, either a i5 or and i7 (like mine) processor which greatly enhances the response time of the laptop. I prefer the i7 CPU over the i5. The processor also increases the computers abililty to multitask so that you can download programs without having to deal with a slow internet.

This R950 laptop also comes with a 500 or 620 GB hard drive that is perfect for those of you who love to have lots of space on the computer. There is plenty of space so that you can store all of your music, photos, and movies while still having enough space for downloads.

There is a CD/DVD drive that plays all of your cds and dvds perfectly. This drive also burns cds so that you can share your favorite music with your friends and family.

This toshiba laptop computer also features a 15.6 inch screen that includes a high resolution and a high definition picture. With this great screen you can enjoy watching your favorite movies in high definition and the 15.6 inch screen is plenty big enough to satisfy your viewing experience.

You can easily adjust the brightness and color settings to your personal preference. With all of these features the screen always appears smooth and clear. In addition to the fantastic displayScience Articles, this laptop also features stereo speakers that are built in to the laptop itself. These speakers have a very high audio quality and the sound is superb. They are perfect for playing music and can easily be used during parties and large get togethers.

The R950 laptop also has great internet connection and its wireless capabilities are excellent. This laptop is capable of connecting to almost any wireless network in the vicinity and still gives you high performance wherever you are. It also has a great wireless range so that it can obtain a lot more wireless networks than most laptops can.

With 3 usb ports you can use multiple multi media devices at once. You can plug in your printer and download music and photos from your ipod and camera at the same time.

This laptop runs Windows 7 without a hitch. Druing the year I have had I haven't had any crashes. The operating system purrs along happily.

I use Microsoft Office 2010 on my laptop with 8 GB of ram. That's probably and overkill.

You can run the latest Autocad of any other Cad on the i7 version with 16 GB memory. Users have reported excellent performance with this software on configured laptops.

I remember the days when Toshiba introduced the P5 and P10 laptops years ago. Compared to days laptop from Toshiba, they were woefully underpowered for the average business user. Toshiba has made great strides in manufaturing the R950 laptop.

The only problem I jave noticed is the hdd life. If you do not have the hdd protections software installed and you move the laptop while it's on, you're asking for trouble with the hdd. It seems like that's the only week point I can come up with.

Oh yeah, and the human factor. If you leave a pen on the keyboard and shut the lid, guess what will happen? Yep, cracked screen.

Oh no, you're thinking, that's expensive.

The pleasant surprise here is that if you take to an authorised repait centre it will only cost around $240. That's value.

I'm happy with my Toshiba R950

i've had this computer for more than a year and im very impressed with its performance. Its fast, quiet but it heats so much. the touch panel that includes volume control, play/pause/stop and wifi (on/off) stop working on the 10th month of use. that fact is irritating since i used a lot the touch panel to mute the computer sound and to turn off/on my wifi.

besides the touch panel situation the performance of the computer is amazing. i use it to run engineering swoftwares and never had any problems.

I picked it for its looks and it really is gorgeous!

It is fast, the touch screen is an amazing feature so useful in so many situations, especially with Windows 8 but even when reading pdfs and browsing web pages.

Its very thin and light. I love the backlit keyboard.

Sony has included some nice software with it.

Battery lasts around 3 h on medium to heavy usage.

I love how tiny the charger is.

The screen is bright and colorful, whites are very white. Full HD looks nice.

However, it has visible slightly darker lines on the screen (it might be a faulty screen, or it might be just the type of display) which is very annoying.

The microphone catches every tap on the the track-pad, keyboard, the body of the laptop and when on skype the other party hears it as very loud scratching, so you definitely need an external mic. And here comes the other issue the laptop comes with a single jack for both mic and headphones and if you only plug a mic it doesnt recognize it'and keeps using the internal one, so you need a full headset (headphones with a mic) to make it work. That was my work-around at least.

The keyboard has little feedback and makes it hard to type.

Oh, and the web cam is low quality.

....but this thing has to be hard reset at least once a day.

If you leave the screen on and come back to use it 20+ minutes later, you just get a black screen. You have to hold down the power button until it turns off and then power it back on.

If you surf too many tabs, eventually the system stops responding and you have to do the same thing again.

I've downloaded all of the updates from MS and Sony, but the problem persists!

Buyer beware.

I had high hopes for my first Sony computer, but this may be my last.

Let me preface by saying that I played significantly less than the usual price for this. I bought this as a return--but the computer itself was unused and SPOTLESS. Overall I payed about $630 for this and I definitely feel like it was money well spent. The specs are fantastic, the display is top notch, and it runs like a dream.

I really enjoy the functionality of the F keys, and the backlit keyboard. The aluminum casing is wonderful and so far I've had no issue of fingerprints, overheating, or scratches. Very very durable. The speakers are quality, the overall size and weight of the laptop is great. Even in a silent room, it doesn't make any noise. The touchscreen is a nice bonus and it doesn't smudge. Granted, I don't see myself using it much since I use Classic Shell rather than the app screen. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Now, for my criticism:

Because of my own personal setup, a mouse isn't something that I can use on a regular basis. That being said, the trackpad is something I am not used to. It doesn't have the proper right and left click buttons, so I often times find that it gets a little off center when I press down on the pad. Irritating, but not a huge deal. I'll adjust. I'd also like to add that the trackpad placement is awful. it'd be much easier if it were situated more to the right. I can't quite comfortably place my wrists on the edge of the computer without occasionally bumping it and sometimes clicking things. Again, just mildly irritating and I'll adjust.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: Because of some odd issues with Windows 8, I would NOT recommend updating the system. My updates froze halfway through (27/58 updates). I looked online to see if this was a common problem or if I needed to wait it out. As it turns, its a fairly common problem. I hard restarted my computer, and when I got back to the desktop, I did a system restore and opted out of updates. I don't claim to be any sort of expert (especially with Win 8), so if you prefer to operate on a fully updated OS, you may want to look into how to avoid this problem.

Given that my only issues are with the trackpad placement and Windows 8, I would give this a 4.5/5 if it were possible.

Also, to other Win 8 users out there: I would highly recommend looking into Classic Shell if you are having a difficult time adjusting.

The computer is good, really sharp, clear picture. I was a little disappointed with the keyboard, it seemed to me that it was not quite as responsive as it should be. I type well and I keep having to go back and correct spelling because sometimes it wasn't fast enough or sensitive enough to get the spelling correct with a very light touch. I found that when I retyped I had to hit the keys harder than I thought necessary.

After reading the other reviews I was worried the keyboard would not be good. Honestly I have no clue what they were talking about. This laptop has an AMAZING keyboard. I have owned acer, hp, dell, and macs, this if my first toshiba and it is amazing. The keys are low and are not soft to push. The screen is crisp and clear. Speakers are better and LOUDER then I imagined. The mouse pad feels natural. And windows 8 is amazing. My ONLY critic about this laptop is the button on the disk drive is alil hard to push. But it is no big deal. Honestly for 400$ this laptop goes WAY farther then ANY I have ever seen. Buy this laptop if your considering any kind of computer.

Great laptop for the money, fast and seems to do what I need it to do. My last Toshiba went through hell and back and was still working fine when I retired it after 5 years. Widows 8 isn't so bad after you get use to it, I can do without all the apps but it gets the job done. Back to the computer, you won't go wrong with this modle and it looks cool.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C855-S5132NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Fusion Finish in

I've had a Toshiba notebook for about 16 years and it is great, but because of the keyboard I've always used an external keyboard with it. I thought this model would be different, but the keys are right together and not raised and separated as I had hoped, so I returned it in favor of an Acer (see my review for that one). Toshiba is an excellent brand, but they need to remodel their keyboards.

I received a charger that was not meant for the laptop and had to purchase another one for over $60.

First off, let me say that the experience with this laptop and this manufacturer has been overall stellar...it is a great buy @ 449 and is pretty darn fast with the Haswell chip they've included...slide a small SSD in place of the 500GB 5400rpm drive and this thing will sail...very pleased...

with that said, i ordered this at 449 and got 2 (CAMELCAMELCAMEL)...then once i got them, i realized that i assumed it came with a DVD drive (like most laptops that are not super thin) and it does NOT...i contacted Acer and they said to get an external drive...

i did a little more looking and the place for the drive exists...there is a "filler" piece of plastic they have slid in there as a placeholder...i unscrewed the retaining screw on the bottom and slid out the "filler" and shined a flashlight inside to see if a connection exists...it does...the Acer techinician i chatted with refused to admit that i could put a drive in it...

GOOD LUCK FINDING A D**N DRIVE WITH THE CORRECT BEZEL...IT'S TOO NEW...I CANNOT FIND SOMEONE SELLING IT ANYWHERE...

so...if you need a DVD drive of any kind, deal with its absence or get an external one...or wait for 6-12 months for the aftermarket to catch up and maybe pick one up on ebay...

This brand new laptop arrived in late June 2013 and upon unpacking I was in love. It did have a dead battery but worked on the power brick while charging. That day was my first time using Win8 I was not impressed at all with the stupid changes by Microsoft and wished I had the very same machine with Win7 instead. After a few hours I learned what I needed to mostly turn off the new features from Microsoft so it worked like Win7. However I then had to go online to download a tiny bit of software from PC World magazine that enabled me to add an icon to the taskbar that was labeled "Shutdown PC". That worked great. So far this computer has performed much better (except for the crappy Win8) than my old laptop and cost just over half as much. If Acer would offer an option to order this unit with Win7 installed I would have given it the highest rating available. My favorite thing about it is the price.

My daughter needed a laptop for college but didn't have a ton of money to spend. This Acer fit the bill. We did our homework and found PC Mag rated it as number one for the price. Good enough for us!

Not much I can say here other than I got what I bought. It's an Acer, it has everything I need, and it works. If these are the specifications you are looking for in a laptop then you will be happy with this one, provided you don't get a lemon which seems to happen with all manufacturers these days. I would recommend this product to anyone.
