Love this laptop. Definitely a bang for one's buck. As I write this, early March 2012, I got this machine for roughly $400 here on Amazon. This was a pretty great price, especially considering I found the exact same model on several other sites well exceeding the $600-$700 range.

A really solid laptop perfect for everyday use, and beyond. The 15.6" screen is extremely bright, and has excellent resolution. As someone who watches a lot of media (videos, movies, tv shows, etc) on my laptop, the screen is great. The Intel i3 Core, 4 GB of RAM, and mid-level Intel graphics card all make for a snappy machine that is also acceptable for light, online gaming. A sizable hard drive, over 600 GB, won't be filled easily. Add a wireless card, built in webcam, and Bluetooth, a feature which has become more prominent in the last year or two, and all your bases are covered. The Bluetooth is great for 'no cable' transferring of files to and fro from your Bluetooth devices.

The audio is no slouch either. We all know that many a laptop speakers out there have their problems; They don't get very loud. They sound tinny. Not enough bass. Too much treble. etc etc. While the speakers here aren't exactly perfect, I'm pleased to report they are more then solid. On maximum levels the audio gets quite loud and remains mostly tin free. I also have to say, after experimenting with not only online videos, but various audio/video formats, the sound quality rates about a 7.5 on my scale. Pretty high considering some of the bad audio I've experienced, even on high-end laptops.

The machine comes in at just slightly over 5 lbs. Perhaps a tad heavy for some, but still hardly cumbersome. The machine itself is a handsome matte finish gray, and when closed, it's rounded edges give it a modern, almost IKEA-esque quality. If I had one overall quibble, and it's a very minor one, it would be the keyboard. While the keys have a soft, pleasant tactile feel, the keyboard itself is a tad on the small side. This is made more frustrating considering the size of the machine.

Bottom Line: Looking for a solid, mid-level, wallet friendly laptop that can handle a variety of tasks and situations? This one will easily fit the bill. Overall, an excellent value for what you're getting.

I have been using HP's for a very long time and find this one very quick and useful. My only comment is that is a little heavy and serves much better on a desk then if you need to take your laptop out..meetings, room-to-room etc.

Best Deals for HP g6-1d70us (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

I recently purchased this laptop to replace my out of date Gateway and found the price to be great for all of the features that it has. It arrived in a timely manner (2 days) and was well packaged from Amazon. I was looking for a laptop with a 15.6" display and not a keyboard with the 10 key function. Here are the pro's and con's that I discovered:

Pros

Easy to set-up

Vivid display, HD quality

3.5+ hours of batt life over wi-fi

Charges quickly

Full size keyboard easy to type on

Windows 7

Decent built in camera

Cons

Not a fan of the trackpad, poor for internet scrolling

Would recommend purchasing a wireless mouse

Heavy, but well built

No docking station available from Amazon or HP

Overall I am extremely satisfied with this purchase, I purchased an HP for my parents for Christmas and they are also liking theirs as well, but I was able to get mine for over $100 less! Very happy customer, would recommend this product for anyone.

Honest reviews on HP g6-1d70us (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

This is no doubt the nicest and fastest laptop I have ever owned. However, it is not perfect. The Core i3 is plenty fast for streaming HD videoin fact, that was my main criteria when searching for a new laptop. The Pentium, Celereron, and low end dual core AMD processors simply can't handle HD video. You must get the equivalent of a Core i3 or better.

The good things about this laptop are it is small (at least is smaller than my 6 year old laptop of the same screen size) and light weight. It's got an HDMI port (which should be a requirement of all computers these days) and plenty of USB ports. I recommend attaching a "port saver" for the HDMI connection if you constantly use the laptop with different HDTVs. The mouse touchpad also has a nice feature that lets you turn off the touchpad with a double tap in the corner.

The bad is that the battery is difficult ro remove and install. Not impossible, but harder than it should be. I also don't like that the monitor does NOT have a clip to lock it down. It's just spring loaded so that means you have to hold the bottom of the laptop with one hand as you use the other hand to raise the screen. Again, not a deal killer, but a minor annoyance. Since the laptop has this spring loaded monitor, that means there is not enough room for any USB or VGA ports on the back of the unit. All ports are on the side including the power jack. The last thing I'm not crazy about is the monitor itself. The colors are way to intense. But that is a problem with all LCD displays IMO.

No, this laptop isn't perfect, but I do still like it and recommend it. To get a perfect laptop you would have to pay 2-3 times more than this one.

Love the design, it's simple and elegant. I'm not even close to being an expert in computers, I mainly am a writer and use it as such, for my work. I do however see an issue when I try to run multiple programs, but I am inclined to think that is most laptops.

All in all I am pleased with my purchase, if you're looking for a laptop this is one of the best I have had and not all that expensive!

This computer is a little pricey, but I thought the antiglare screen was worth it. I just got it and have only had it hours, but this is my first impression.

Aesthetically pleasing, by far. The finish on the aluminum on top is really pleasing to me. The computer looks good. The keyboard is a nice size. So far I have no complaints about the mouse touchpad after you turn off touch to click option (with it on, the mouse resets in odd places...). The Keyboard is smooth and not very loud.

The computer itself has a lot of nice touches. a fingerprint reader allows easy logons with fingerprint swipe (totally new to me). Lots of quick keys for function on the keyboard.

For the size of the computer, it is a good weight. Battery seems to charge up within a couple hours and stays on power for a few. I got about 4-5 hours of use out of it before needing to charge it up again. The webcam is good for a built-in.

i3 processor seems to do well with high def videos, opening large files. I've yet to try it on games.

Windows 8 is completely confusing, but that's another story. Overall, a great computer for the money I spent on it. I will try to update if anything sticks out to me that should be warned against.

Best Deals for HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Business Notebook PC - C9K69UT

Well made, decent performing laptop that seems like it will last for a few good years. The case is very sturdy, resulting in a fairly heavy machine. So far the battery life seems like a solid few hours. Screen is bright and clear. The keyboard is comfortable to use and the number pad is appreciated. After using the touchpad, it seems OKa little weird at times but all of them seem to be. I prefer using my mouse 90% of the time but its what I'm accustomed to. The fingerprint reader was a pleasant surprise; I was prepared for it to be just a gimmick but it works. The features of Windows 8 on the other hand are a tremendous disappointment but there's nothing to do but dig in and make it workthere are no other options really. The Intel Core i3-3110M CPU (2.40GHz) is more than adequate for my needs and it seem fast compared to my previous Core2 Duo. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase, for normal home all-around use, its a good choice.

Have purchased a couple of these. No complaints except for them coming with Windows 8 installed. Wish they had Windows 7 because Windows 8 really sucks. I don't know of anyone that likes it. Thankfully, there is a program that makes Windows 8 look similar to Windows 7. They can take Windows 8 and trash it as far as I'm concerned.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i14z-2200sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook

This review is not about the Inspiron 14z since I never received one. I purchased it as "used, very-good" from Amazon Warehousedeals. It looks brand-new and well packaged. HOWEVER, mine will work only if plugged in, because of "battery not detected" error! It came with BIOS A04. Based on forums, I tried to update to A06 but it won't flash bios without a battery pack installed! While using service tag on Dell's website, I realized that I received an inspiron 13z (5323) instead of a 14z, thus a different product with smaller screen size!! Really?! I never had any problems with Amazon warehousedeals in the past, this time feel scammed and waste of my time. Return already on its way.

I agree with the other positive reviews about the size and looks. I had been searching for months for the perfect laptop for me [lots of surfing and several windows open, but no gaming] at the perfect price. I read lots of reviews in my search. Kim Komando, [from whom I get most of my computer info] listed several must have options. One was Core i5 over Core i3, because i3 is old technology. Just before I bought this one, in my Amazon search, I specified i5. This recommendation popped up and I assumed it was I5 and bought it because all of the other specs were just right, without realizing that it was not what I intended. In fact, it was only after several days of use that I realized my error. My ram meter indicated that I am normally using 60-70%. I decided to improve that by adding another 4 gigs of memory. I discovered that the memory is soldered in instead of plugged in therefore I could not do it myself.

My first laptop was an Acer, and after getting a hard drive replaced due to early failure, it worked well for 3 years, but the battery got to where it wouldn't hold a charge. I decided Acer deserved my business again.

Pros:

1. Perfect size and weight.

2. Looks great.

3. Fast and mostly intuitive in its operation [after adding a Windows 7 shell to the Windows 8 OS, because it was easier for me to use good choice].

Cons:

1. Locks up frequently and requires a hard shut down. Sometimes I get the message during reload that I had a Service_Exception_Error, and they will shut the computer down for me and restart it. Sometimes I have to do a hard shut down again when it fails to continue loading but goes gray screen on me for an extended period.

2. Loses my Wi-Fi connection frequently each day, so that I have to disconnect then reconnect, which always fixes it. I upgraded my router thinking it could be the problem, but the new, fast, super-duper one does the same thing. The Fire does not have that problem.

3. I want more memory but can't add it myself.

4. It would be nice to have a backlit keyboard.

I'm writing all these issues down in the hopes that someone can suggest fixes for me. I had a couple of issues about my Kindle Fire HD, which I mentioned in my review, and got a couple of really good responses which fixed my issues totally. Thanks guys...

For the money, this laptop performs well, is a great size, and seems to be very reliable (Given I have only owned it for a month). It was a present for my fiance, and given she is pretty picky and usually prefers a larger form factor, I was concerned that she may be disappointed by a smaller ultrabook. To my suprise (and hers) she has actually taken to the size of this book well, and after getting used to Windows 8, seems to prefer the book over her previous Lenovo Thinkpad. The battery life, she charges it once every couple days (doesnt use it continously though). All in all, I dont think for the cost I could have found a better book.

Best Deals for Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

A great value for an ultra-book. Its very fast, thin, and built very well with good materials.

I was considering the S7 but i didn't think it was worth the HUGE increase in price from this one.

I paid $553.98 here and i was not able to find any other retailer that was offering anything close to this price for this model.

I would highly recommend it.

Definitely a buy!

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire S3-391-6676 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

I got this because I really wanted a 13" ultrabook. There were problems with wi-fi even when I was in the same room as the router my internet kept getting disconnected. The speakers are not very good the sound quality is very tinny. I do not recommend this at all. I decided to invest in a mac-book pro rather than having to replace a windows laptop every couple of years

This is a very nice ultrabook that mostly meets all of my expectations. It is very light weight and compact, has a bright high res screen, and a very nice user friendly keyboard. The touchpad is a little oversensitive and can interfere with keyboard entry, but it is readily deactivated (F7 key) if you prefer to use and external (usb) mouse, as I do. A few features that are less than delightful are:

-speaker sound quality is dreadful--I always use headphones

-volume control requires two hands (function key plus up/down arrow)

-there is no light to indicated caps lock on/off

-there is no Ethernet port--not a big deal as WiFi works great, unless you are doing initial setup of a router or gateway, which requires a wired connection.

-system is equipped with Windows 8, which just stinks, but with a couple of mouse clicks you can get to a desktop environment and ignore Windows 8 metro (tiles) screen for the most part

On the positive side performance is very good; the system starts from off state in about 30 seconds, and wakes up from sleep mode in about 5 seconds. The system is unfazed by heavy multitasking: I typically have several websites open in my browser, an email program, a couple of spreadsheets, accounting software, a photo editor, a media player, and sometimes a CAD program, all running at the same time with no loss in speed and no crashes.

The system is advertised as having a 500 GB hard drive plus a 20 GB SSD, but file explorer shows only a single drive totaling 455 GB. Clearly the SSD is present, else the system could not start up and wake up so quickly, but Acer has done something to hide it.

I decided to give a chance to Asus after Sams didn't have a Dell to sustitute my HP that broke in less than 2 years. The reviews were good, so I bought it. My first impression was how cheap the material look and feel, not like my Dell and the HP. Other problem was that is a finger print magnet, always looks dirty. But what make me change it was the poor almost inaudible sound of the speakers, I need to use headphones to hear. Didn't like neither that the hard disk is in two partitions. It runs well the programs and the screen looks good, is windows 8 fault the software problems, but I expected more for an almost $400.00 computer and that brand. Finally, I found a Dell for $40.00 more, change it and now I'm happy. Not recommended unless it cost you under $300.00.

At first I was a bit intimidated by this laptop but as I got more familiar with the Windows 8 concept I began to see that it actually made more sense in some areas. The probs I did have were more with getting used to Windows 8 than with the laptop itself. The laptop is great I found the numbers keypad on it to be a great help to me, and surprisingly, it's lighter than than my older one. This is definitely worth it.

I usually don't write good review, only bad ones.

THis laptop is everything a stylized geek deserve. The outside is flawless, very well build compared with my previews laptops a Asus G51J and Alienware. It is really quiet even with the two internal fans. Lightweight as a tablet. The monitor is the best I have seen on a laptop (OK! the retina display is amazing!), the lighted keyboard is neat as well as the touch pad with the same APPLE-MAC gestures, it works perfect with no glitches or delays. I do record videos and screen-casts and the quality of the mic recording is really good, also the web cam. The sound is ok and when you connect the included subwoofer it is something else!. The aluminium finishes are beautiful.

Internally the machine is a monster!!! I compile Objective-C and Java code like nothing, I edit videos in second with no delay. Big files on adobe Photoshop or RAW professional pictures opens instantly. I can run back processes like a http server and 20 others BIG programs with no problem. The RAM is fast, and not even say the SSD hard drives.

This is something cool. It has WiDi, I had no idea what was that and now I use it every day. The Ethernet wireless is really sophisticated and with harmony with the Intel i7 processor it broadcast wirelessly video in 1080p to my TV (almost no delay). The Bluetooth antenna performs well and I really haven't needed more than the three USB included.

I am a heavy gamer and the video card is every I need for long multiplayer high demand games. I get 250 FPS stable running COD4 on high settings.

My wife got a DELL XPS 13 Ultrabook for $2,228.96 and that is a piece of shit compared with this beauty. Just to tell you, the DELL XPS 13 Ultrabook doesn't even have HDMI, can you imagine??? for that price??? DELL SUCKS HARD!!!

In conclusion your friends, attendees and co-works are going to envy the design of your machine (this one); your enemies on your multiplayer game are gonna get numb with your performance, and you boss or clients are going to get happy with your effectiveness.

The battery runs up to 3.5 hours

THE BAD: I don't like the fact that I can't change the RAM because the slot is not the generic SO-DIMM. The hard drives gets full easily.

This laptop is the best on the market for the price.

I have used it during the last 6 months. I didn't rush for reviewing.

The product at first seemed a little sketchy, but not to worry. Adorama Camera is on Asus' list of certified resellers. Therefore you don't have to worry about warranty issues. The product when ordered shipped within the time frame, actually early. When it arrived, there was no damage to the boxes. There was one big box that contained bubble wrap surrounding another box inside. Inside this box, was the Asus Laptop box, and the Google Nexus 7 Box. Both were in top condition. The laptop itself is the Asus UX51VZA model. In the Asus box, it contained, the laptop, power cable, mini-vga to VGA dongle, the mini-usb to USB dongle, and the external subwoofer. Everything seems to be in order! I'm open to answering questions. I highly recommend purchasing this bundle. Not only is it a good deal, the laptop itself is amazing, MACBOOK KILLER status I would say.

If you are considering getting this laptop, snatch up this deal right away! Excellent price and the bundle deal is quite good.

Honest reviews on ASUS ZENBOOK Prime UX51Vz 15.6" Ultrabook & Nexus 7 Tablet Bundle

The Laptop: Is amazing and everything I expected. It's super fast with a 3 second boot time and runs everything very smoothly. A word of caution, I tried to downgrade the OS to Windows 7 and not all the drivers were compatible.

The Nexus 7 Tablet: I feel like this was just a throw in. The newer versions are all minimum 16GB but the one included is 8GB.

The Package: Comes with the laptop, chargers, manuals, Nexus tablet AND SUBWOOFER. I called the seller, manufacturer and Amazon and they all told me that this package did not come with it because it was not specified. When I received the package I was pleasantly surprised that it did and amazed at how little people knew of their own products.

Seller's Customer Service: Confused my request, gave me the run around, shifted blame and ultimately delivered my package late.

My Dell M1330 of five years, and 3 hard drives later finally gave up the ghost. It was, in general, a solid performer. I recently acquired the HP Envy 4-1043CL. For the money, it is nothing short of spectacular. Rich with features like the lightning fast i5 processor, 500GB hard drive, 32GB SSD, all make this a pretty seamless package.

As for reviewers complaining about the monitor, it reminds me of the guys that review cars that do not understand why a car goes up on two wheels in a 130mph turn Get over it for 99% of the users, this screen is an upgrade over almost anything you might be replacing, and by the way, it too is spectacular. I considered a MacBook Air, with a great screen, great cosmetics, all of the Apple quirks, but at almost a third of the price, it is really hard to not like the package HP has put together Oh, and did I mention that it is light? (3.88 lbs.)

Windows 8 is a bit of a learning curve, but getting used to it is easy.

I really wanted to like this machine.

But the screen was a dealbreaker for me. I had read that the screen was mediocre, and figured that that was fine with me -a high end screen wasn't that important to me. But "mediocre" doesn't really begin to describe the problem with the screen. It's washed out to the point of distraction and eye strain. Colors look odd, blacks aren't black, and whites are covered in a bluish haze. I tried color calibration and even a combination of settings found in these comments -but they don't really solve the problem. This is, as some reviewers point out, a viewing angle problem; the screen rises to the level of mediocre -barely passable -when you look at it from just the right, very narrow angle. But that angle is so narrow that it's impossible to maintain, because the slightest movement will put you out of it. So again, while I wouldn't put a high end screen high up on my list of priorities, this screen I find to be so bad that I can't ignore it.

Then there's the trackpad. It's not very responsive. Scrolling is terrible. This is something you can might learn to tolerate. If it weren't for the screen, I'd probably have thought seriously about just living with it.

Because otherwise, it's a very fast and very nice looking computer. It's a little heavy, but that's a worthwhile trade off for the price (you can find these refurbished with 6gb of ram for $599). But before you buy one, I recommend walking into a computer store and testing one and thinking long and hard about whether you can live with the display and trackpad. These are items that the average reviews make sound like minor irritations and drawbacks. And that may be true for some. But for many others, they'll make the machine unusable.

Best Deals for HP Envy 4-1043CL Core i5-3317U Dual-Core 1.7GHz 6GB 32GB SSD

Mousepad will sometimes freeze, requiring a reboot. Annoying. But the size and weight is nice and it is sufficient for bumming around the interwebs and small work tasks.

Honest reviews on HP Envy 4-1043CL Core i5-3317U Dual-Core 1.7GHz 6GB 32GB SSD

Pro: fast boot-up, thanks to the 32gig SSD that runs the OS; 7200rpm HHD; back-lit keyboard; it's light and thin; and has several 3.0usb ports and a 2.0 always-on port for charging stuff when the PC is powered down.

Con: the screen just isn't that impressive--dull comes to mind. It's fine for day-to-day work but not so great for play.

This is the first review that I'm writing and, I feel this machine deserves every word.

Recently had a Mac Book Pro which had a history of several hardware issues, and, ended up replacing the unit through Apple Care with a Mac Book Pro 17" Quad Core i7 with 8GB of RAM.

The unbelievable power of this machine had made my Power Mac G5 Quad 4 officially obsolete. This system is best describe as a portable desktop. As a commercial photographer I am pretty demanding when it comes to graphics and graphic software, and this machine certainly keeps up with anything and everything that throw at it and, more. It's also hooked up to Cinema Display and, the footprint compared to a desktop is minimal. Power wise, I use to have to wait for CS5 to open, now its almost instantaneous. Processing 40mb images are a breeze, in addition to being so quiet it's hard to tell whether it's on. I will say through I ordered a shell cover for it, seems that the case is much more prone to scratches and dents due to what seems like a thinner skin.

Again if your looking for something that has the power of a desktop but, need portability, then I would go with this latest in Mac Book Pros.

This machine is great. I love everything about it, including the 750GB hard drive. At first, I was skeptical that the specs weren't the specs listed on Amazon, but it is! It is the full matte-finish (anti-glare) 17" screen and 2.3GHz i7 processor. The shipping was expedient, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I have the 2.2 Ghz Processor +8gb of RAM model and could not be happier. As far as games, everything I have thrown at is runs fantastic (It kills games like SC2 and Portal 2). I have also been able to do complex phonemic analysis on this computer, which my 2008 macbook pro struggled with.

If you have the cash, I would suggest spending a bit extra to get this fantastic machine.

This is as much computer as anyone is ever going to need. I worked in graphic design for 4 years, and I upgraded to this laptop last year. Huge improvements, works like a charm since I've gotten it. And since the announcement of the Retina Macbook Pros, this is one of the last and most updated 17" Macbook Pro's that anyone will be able to get!

I felt compelled to endorse the Acer Travelmate. I wanted a 13.3" Windows 7 laptop with 3rd gen Intel Processor and the Acer was the cheapest option I found by far. I couldn't find any reviews but I really like mine so far.:

Pros:

Lightweighta hair over 4 lbs which makes it almost an ultrabook

Full-featuredits a business laptop but still has a webcam and USB 3 port

Fastlighting fast so far. Acer doesn't bog their pcs down with a bunch of crap and its faster to boot up than any computer I have used. That includes comparable Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba models.

Inexpensivefound mine for just over $600. Couldn't find a comparable model from the other guys for less than $750.

Cons:

Not stylish in anywaysturdy black plastic, no keyboard backlighting

Screen resolutionis not as sharp as some of the newer guys. A step down from HD.

I've had this laptop for a few days now, and I'm extremely satisfied. Here's my take on all the pros and cons of this machine so you can make a more informed purchase.

::::::PROS::::::

+ Ridiculously awesome deal. I got this when it was 20% off ($860) and free shipping, and within a day after my purchase they ran out of stock, and it came back a day or two later at only 15% discount. Those quickly went out as well, and the discount dropped to 14%. The deal on this is dropping fast, so try to get it as soon as you can.

+ Keyboad is very sturdy with very little flex. I've seen another reviewer or two complain about the flex from the keyboard, however I'm concerned they might be commenting on the wrong model. Flexing is indeed an issue on similar items near this series, but in this particular one it feels perfectly fine. The keyboard features a numpad, which it fits in by sharing a few keys, which is a nice bit of optimization. This is actually one of the more comfortable keyboards I've ever used on a laptop. I was really happy when I got to check this out, because this was my only real concern from reading reviews, and I absolutely must have a quality keyboard because I expect to do a lot of written work on this laptop. Luckily, it feels great!

+ Turbo Booster is a really nice feature. Your CPU(s) will automatically overclock based upon the current demands on your system. I'm not much for extra-accessory desktop items, but this comes with a nifty blue bar that sits on your desktop and shows you in real time what your CPUs are being overclocked to at that moment. Very useful.

+ Awesome transfer speed. Was moving a lot of large files around, unzipping things and the likes, and it moved at a really awesome speed. No doubt thanks to the quad core i7 processor.

+ Sound can go up decently loud for a laptop, and has pretty good audio by that same standard. The sound is supposed to be one of the strong selling points for this laptop, but I didn't buy it for that reason, it's just a nice bonus.

+ A great mid-level gaming laptop that will improve in performance over time. Right now, there aren't too many games that truly make use of quad core CPUs, however as more and more do, your performance in games should go up. You sacrifice a little bit of performance today, in exchange for a better overall machine and substantially more performance tomorrow. For example, a dual core machine that is clocked higher may out-perform a quad core i7 by as much as 10% in some games, however if you compare it to a game that supports quad core technology, the quad core jumps in performance by 60-80% (example: Dragon Age), which is a huge boost. This machine also supports up to 16GB of ram, so you'll be able to scale up over time accordingly. A great laptop that should last a long time. Be sure to switch over to "performance mode" when you are plugged in and want to game, for maximum performance (remember to turn it off performance mode when you're done).

Some games I recommend trying with your new laptop:

TheHunter (free) -this is a free hunting game, that looks absolutely amazing and is hyper realistic.

Alien Swarm (free) -this is a free co-op game on Steam that is based on the source engine, and deals with lots of units on the screen.

Dragon Age -the sequel is coming soon, but the original Dragon Age is probably the best quad core game on the market right now, a good test!

StarCraft 2 (get the demo) -This actually is optimized for dual core and not quad core, but will still be a good test for you.

Shogun Total War 2 -this isn't out yet, but it releases in March and if they are smart, the game will be optimized for quad core technologies. This would be a perfect game to make use of your i7, I just hope they make use of it.

::::::CONS::::::

Touchpad will annoy you. Firstly, the touchpad is far off to the left which I find to be an odd design decision considering most people are used to operating a mousing device with their right hand (I'm left-handed, and even I prefer to operate computers with my right hand from years of conditioning). Another problem with the touch pad is that because it's so far to the left, it routinely comes in your way while typing and causes you to mess up or drop keys when your forearm accidentally activates the touchpad. The clicker is also a rough click, which will make this very poor for mobile gaming purposes. The tracking itself is actually fantastic, it feels really good, but because of its positioning and its tendency to get in the way of your typing, you'll want to get a nice wireless mouse, and disable the touchpad from within your windows system. This way, you'll have a good mouse, and won't have to worry about the touchpad getting in your way while typing.

Epic bloatware from ASUS. As with any new computer, I was expecting to wipe it of a bunch of pre-installed junk, but I was really disappointed with how much extra garbage they had pre-installed. I was only expecting to remove a few things, but there were probably around 20 things I had to remove. For this purpose, I would recommend Revo Uninstaller, which is a great free uninstaller that will even delete the registry files along with the programs to make sure there's not any lingering performance setbacks. After you get past this, life is good again.

1366x768 max resolution. This is a bit disappointing for such an awesome deal, but I bought this knowing this was a limitation on this unit. If you play a lot of high-res games, or need really high res for art/editing projects and the like then this may be a deal breaker, so consider this strongly before making a purchase.

Webcam is not very good. You never want to rely on a laptop webcam, but I was expecting something a bit more useful. This is disappointing because the laptop has a nice shutter-slider security system, which lets you block your webcam's viewing lens at will for extra security even when you have your laptop turned off.

Weight and size is just slightly too much to be truly comfortable using it on your lap, but that's fine. This is more of a mobile desktop replacement than a sit-in-the-car type of laptop. It'll work great on-the-go provided you have a table to work with.

This laptop is basically the width of a 17 inch screened laptop, rather than your standard 15.6. This is because there is a good inch on both sides of the unit being wasted. This difference is obvious when you sit it next to any other standard-sized 15.6 screen laptop, so if you buy this just keep in mind that you're only getting a 15.6 inch screen for what basically amounts to a 17 inch laptop's space.

Glare on the screen can be pretty intense in light conditions, but you'll quickly learn to ignore it (there are also anti-glare screen covers you can buy off of amazon). In fact I've completely forgotten about it up until I began thinking back to my first impressions when opening up the laptop.

::::::PRO/CON::::::

+/The hard drive will come in two partitions (windows 7's fault), which means your OS will be installed on about a 100-something gig space, while the rest of the computer space will be allocated to a new D drive. This isn't technically a con, a lot of people do this because there are a lot of advantages to it, but for me personally I wanted both the OS and the main data from the system on the same partition. This was an extremely easy fix that was resolved in about 2 minutes (look up how to merge windows 7 partitions).

::::::WHAT TO ALSO GET::::::

~ If you're using this for gaming, don't forget to install Direct X. It doesn't come pre-packaged with the driver software. This can be an easy thing to forget!

~ Get a laptop cover. This thing collects fingerprints very easily. If you look up this specific model name (N53JQ) they have a nice black and red trimmed sleeve here on amazon that fits it perfectly.

~ Wireless mouse. The tracking and feel of the touchpad is great, but there are a lot of problems with where the touchpad is positioned, so make sure you get a wireless mouse (as you really should anyway, touchpads should always be a last resort). I got two wireless mice, a Berklin USB Retractable mouse (which is very tiny and plugs into the USB and has awesome tracking), and a Microsoft Wireless 3500 for more every-day use as well as gaming. Both mice track very well, even on your leg if necessary.

~ Electronics cleaning cloth. I got 3M 9027 High Performance Cloth from amazon, hasn't arrived yet but I knew the first day I got it that I wanted to keep this laptop screen clean. I suggest you do the same (plus, it will work on your android, iphone and tablet screens! So it's a good idea to grab one regardless.

Webcam. The webcam that comes stock with this laptop is very poor, but that's easily resolved by investing a few bucks in a high-quality webcam.

A laptop with a quad core processor and holds up to 16Gb of RAM for $1000.00! Are you kidding? The specs on this thing are awesome! I stuck another 8GB of RAM in mine for $114.00 and have 12GB now.

Pros:

-Quad core Intel with hyperthreading shows up as 8 processors in Windows and Linux. (7.9 score in Windows)

-up to 16GB RAM!(7.9 score in Windows)

-HDMI pretty standard on laptops except for Macbooks (Just sold mine so I could buy this!)

-USB 3.0

-eSATA

-1GB Video RAM

-Bluetooth 2.1 EDR

-Supports hardware virtualization

-ASUS has one of the best reputations in the motherboard market

-THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE WORKHORSE!

Cons:

-A little heavy to be carrying around all day

-battery life not that great (buy an extra charger to carry with you)

-keyboard feel is not very good. There is too much flex (spongy) I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse when at my desk.

This type of power is a must have for IT pros and computer enthusiasts alike. As much as everybody is moving to virtualization and cloud computing this is the perfect tool for your arsenal. Actually, you can virtualize your entire arsenal and carry it with you! I'm not really sure what the other reviewer's problem was. This PC is great. Other comparable laptops I've seen go for $2000-$6000.

Edit: 3-15-11

The only reason I posted a comment in the first place was because I had purchased the machine and was amazed at how much I got for such a cheap price (relatively.) When I went online to see what people were saying about this machine the only comment I found was from the first reviewer that gave it 2 stars which I thought was absurd, inaccurate, and unfair. I never said the overall Win score was 7.9 and I never said this was a great gaming rig (although it's not bad with external monitors.) It is a great "workhorse". Meaning it has awesome RAW COMPUTING POWER Binary, 01's, it can process data very quickly and efficiently. It's by far, the most POWERFUL laptop I've ever owned. It's not he prettiest (Apple), it's not the coolest (Apple), it's not the best gaming laptop (whatever Alienware?), it IS a viable desktop replacement for power users. I have 2 22 inch monitors attached at 1680x1050, running Ubuntu 10.10, with several virtual machines (including OSX) and I couldn't be happier.

I love this laptop. It's super fast (once I removed all the bloatware and installed Firefox, I hate IE) and super quiet. It stays very cool, except for a vent on the side. The battery life is better than my Asus i5 that I have, too. Lasts about 2 hours when watching movies online. Fine by me, I mostly leave it plugged in anyway.

The screen is beautiful, the silver finish is GORGEOUS.

The ONLY thing I hate about this computer is the keyboard. It's flexy and spongy and cheap feeling. If you are picky about keyboards, then search somewhere else. This one bothers me. But, I guess, not really enough to send it back, because everything else is perfect with the laptop. Argh! Please, Asus, stick with quality keyboards and light them up!! That would be perfect.

I use my laptop for photo and video editing. Also some graphic design with Adobe Illustrator. I've got Photoshop and Sony Vegas installed and they run fast and perfectly. This laptop is a work horse!!

Update: I have had this laptop for a few weeks now and I had to come back and say that I love the keyboard now. I got used to it and it feels great now. Maybe it was just me before. LOL. I LOVE this laptop!!!

It is rare that you can find an out-of-the-box laptop with the power to perform without hesitation for 3D graphic designers, video editors and audio recording/editing. I am currently using mine for all of the above...

This laptop has the power of a high-end workstation and actually can cost you less. If you're looking for power on the go or small foot print for the mentioned applications this is a must-have. Asus is a top-notch motherboard manufacture and contrary to one review here I thought it also looked great out-of-the-box.

Pros:

no need in the mentioning the specs but they say it all.

Cons:

all the junk software that was preinstalled...

After much researched, I concluded that this was the best equipped laptop for the money. The specs, as stated, are a ridiculous bargain for the price. Asus hardware oozes quality and durability.

For those wanting to upgrade the ram, the screws are under the rubber stumps at the bottom.

Negatives (if pressed) include lack of bluray drive, weight, and bloatware.

Overall, I am super happy with it.

This review is primarily about the location of the USB 3.0 Port.

From the manual: "If a port is black, it is USB 2.0 compatible, if

it is blue it is also USB 3.0 compatible". You will probably need this port for a wireless mouse.

After two days of ownership the computer has performed well for a relatively inexpensive laptop.

Windows 8 is not easy to navigate, to me. The 17.3" screen is bright, big, & very viewable.

Battery life is rated at 4.5 hours, which goes by very fast.

My only negative feedback about the seller is that it took a couple of days to process my order and get it shipped. The seller did state the processing takes 4-5 days on the ad, so I wasn't unaware. Dell has discontinued these netbooks, however, their popularity has continued to rise. This one was brand new and works great. It was quite a task to get duoStage installed. Overall, very happy!
