Ok, lets get down to it for this unit. First of all make no mistake, this is not, and I repeat not a full blooded notebook or laptop. This is the next evolution in netbook. The description that Amazon has is a bit flawed and misleading in many ways which I have emailed them about. The "CPU" in this unit is actually AMD's new APU series of chipset that combine the graphics card with the CPU creating the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). While it is listed as a dual core, just remember that this is a dual core 1GHZ processor along the same lines as Intel's Atom CPU. With that said I will get down to the pro's and cons of this unit.

PROS:

Graphics: Video Playback. This unit has remarkable graphics performance. The chipset in this unit produces amazing clarity and smoothness when streaming from Netflix, HULU or from a DVD. I have experienced no issues with the video quality of the unit.

Monitor: The 1080i Screen this unit comes with further enhances the viewing pleasure with amazingly sharp crisp color and clarity. I've yet to see any other netbook or laptop with a screen this nice.

Audio: You have to hear these speakers to believe it. I was floored at their ability to reproduce clear crisp sound and bass with no distortion even at louder volumes. Not a room filling experience, but you wont need headphones to listen to your music or watch a movie with this unit.

RAM: 3GB of RAM that this comes with is more than suffice to power it on the vast majority of productivity applications and multimedia. I however opted to upgrade it to the max of 8GB to further help the sometimes anemic APU get through tasks. It was worth the extra $45 for two 4GB sticks of Kingston RAM.

Gaming: The all important question for a lot of you out there. This will play back basic disc based games and the basic online games. Steam works well on it, games like TF2 had no issues with it, but you are not going to be zooming through games such as WoW or SL as the APU just does not have the power to handle that demand.

Appearance: Don't let the word (Mocha) fool you into thinking the entire device is coffee colored. This unit's visual design is a winner all around. The screen, keyboard and bottom of the unit are black like most laptops, the area surrounding the keyboard, the touch pad and speaker area are what is "mocha" colored, which is more of a deep and dark bronze color that is both subtle and visually appealing. It gives the unit a real look of class and that it's a lot higher priced than it is.

Keyboard & Touchpad: Win! The chicklet style of keys make typing a breeze on this laptop if you have small hands like me or huge hands like the rest of my family. The full keyboard along with the full number pad on the right side make it very nice to use. You wont have to get used to the layout of a cramped laptop keyboard and go hunting for keys on this unit. The touchpad is awesome, smooth to the touch, very responsive, supports multiple gestures and it's "palm proof" technology really works. Drag your hands across the pad and it will not register that as input, preventing you from making accidental input.

Case: The Ice cool technology really works, even after working this unit out hard core to see how far I could push it, the bottom of the case never got warm, the hand rest and keyboard area also never got warm, even in a room with a 82F temp. The fan is super quiet. it's lightweight and sturdy so you don't feel like you are going to break it by moving it around.

Battery: 8 hours easily. This was obtained from streaming a Netflix movie for 2 hours, playing around on Facebook games, video chat, google+ activity and then into web surfing for the remainder of the time. The battery also charged back up to 100% after just under two hours.

CONS:

Multitasking: Out of the box the unit is a bit anemic when it comes to multitasking. Adding more RAM does help this as do some of the suggestions at the end of this review. Once you iron it out, it tends to be acceptable, but if you are coming from a powerhouse computer, this one will drive you batty for awhile at it's response times.

Preinstalled ASUS Software I really don't know what they were thinking when they put on their own software. I know all manufacturers do this, but these programs were the entire reason the laptop out of the box was so sluggish. Some of them even when not running were hoarding 500MB worth of RAM, others had multiple instances of themselves running. The ASUS updater program that's supposed to update all your drivers should be removed immediately before it screws up your system totally. Mine decided to download drivers for the wrong unit and install them, which forced me to have to do a full recovery in order to get the unit working again. There is plenty of griping on ASUS's forums about the program and the suggestion there is to remove it.

Processor: While it is suffice for daily use, web surfing, emails, chats, streaming and the basics, it is not a power house nor a multi-tasker beyond a few low key programs at the same time. Otherwise it will start bogging down on you.

Overall, this is a nice unit with a lot of nice well thought out design features and quality construction. It is a good unit for a college student, high school student, casual web surfer, someone who just wants a laptop or for those who don't need massive computing power. Just do your research on the APU before you buy to see if this will handle what you want to do that I didn't cover in the review.

Suggestions: Remove the preinstalled ASUS software. None of it is mission critical, if you are worried that it may be, just look it up online or in ASUS's forums. Also when you get yours, check the hard drive partitions. Mine was....oh...screwed up at the factory for whatever reason and was partitioned into four partitions plus the recovery partition. I had to merge (easily done with Windows 7) all the partitions so I had only one partition on my drive (plus the recovery drive). Also since there is no physical media to recover this unit with. I strongly suggest making a recovery DVD after you get it all set up the way you want. That way if it dumps on you, you can use the iso to restore it without having to go through all the set up again, nor the over 600MB of Windows updates (yeah...that took awhile).

I have been looking for a new laptop for a while now, and I happened to find this one on amazon. I couldn't find too many reviews on it, but based on the specs that I saw I decided to buy it. This turned out to be a great decision. I am in the middle of high school, so I need something that will last a little while, and perform pretty well. This easily does everything that I need, and also has a surprisingly good battery life. This was the one thing that I was weary about when I bought it, but the battery lasts a good 5 hours on average for me, doing basic tasks, and some video watching. Considering the price, this is probably the best laptop you can find, even though it is a little bit obscure. It runs quite fast for me, and has everything that I could need in a computer.

I had heard that Asus computers had a good reliability record despite having a low price. When this showed up as a special offer on the Kindle screen saver I took advantage of the chance to save forty dollars. It isn;t lightning fast. But it is a nice notebook with a big screen. It is not hot on my lap like other notebooks. All for $270. Big keyboard. Looks nice. Good to have a backup computer. No state tax, free shipping. I shop everywhere, then buy Amazon.

This computer is a little pricey, but I thought the antiglare screen was worth it. I just got it and have only had it hours, but this is my first impression.

Aesthetically pleasing, by far. The finish on the aluminum on top is really pleasing to me. The computer looks good. The keyboard is a nice size. So far I have no complaints about the mouse touchpad after you turn off touch to click option (with it on, the mouse resets in odd places...). The Keyboard is smooth and not very loud.

The computer itself has a lot of nice touches. a fingerprint reader allows easy logons with fingerprint swipe (totally new to me). Lots of quick keys for function on the keyboard.

For the size of the computer, it is a good weight. Battery seems to charge up within a couple hours and stays on power for a few. I got about 4-5 hours of use out of it before needing to charge it up again. The webcam is good for a built-in.

i3 processor seems to do well with high def videos, opening large files. I've yet to try it on games.

Windows 8 is completely confusing, but that's another story. Overall, a great computer for the money I spent on it. I will try to update if anything sticks out to me that should be warned against.

Well made, decent performing laptop that seems like it will last for a few good years. The case is very sturdy, resulting in a fairly heavy machine. So far the battery life seems like a solid few hours. Screen is bright and clear. The keyboard is comfortable to use and the number pad is appreciated. After using the touchpad, it seems OKa little weird at times but all of them seem to be. I prefer using my mouse 90% of the time but its what I'm accustomed to. The fingerprint reader was a pleasant surprise; I was prepared for it to be just a gimmick but it works. The features of Windows 8 on the other hand are a tremendous disappointment but there's nothing to do but dig in and make it workthere are no other options really. The Intel Core i3-3110M CPU (2.40GHz) is more than adequate for my needs and it seem fast compared to my previous Core2 Duo. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase, for normal home all-around use, its a good choice.

Have purchased a couple of these. No complaints except for them coming with Windows 8 installed. Wish they had Windows 7 because Windows 8 really sucks. I don't know of anyone that likes it. Thankfully, there is a program that makes Windows 8 look similar to Windows 7. They can take Windows 8 and trash it as far as I'm concerned.

Pros:

It's cheap,cheap,cheap. Does a decent job for the price. Feels very tough and sturdy.

Cons:

It's kind of heavy and the battery life isnt going to carry you that long (roughly 2.5 hours with LinuxOS and *I think* old battery) but I leave it plugged in most of the time and have watched a 2 hour movie on the battery alone.

The R52 is getting pretty old tech in laptop terms. I don't use it for any heavy/intense gaming or anything it should last for quite a while :)

Recommendation:

Buy it if you want a simple browsing laptop or to read/watch some movies on it.Maybe as a backup to store your personal data that you need to quickly access if your main computer ever goes down. Don't expect some awesome machine though; it's a dinosaur!

PS Double check what you're getting! If it says no HD you need to get one (I bought a small flat usb drive and put Linux on it, works great) Does it come with a charger? (I have the cheap chinese charger on here and it works fine) Are there any other problems with it?

I had a four year old Acer Travel Mate 6292 laptop which served me well over the years. It started to overheat and the fan is almost always at maximum RPM. So i decided to go for a new laptop. My requirements were simple: Light, fast and with good battery. This laptop honestly had everything I was looking for. (Except for windows 8.. not a huge fan)

The screen looks great! From playing games with high settings to watching HD movies, everything has looked very good to say the least. The colors look great!

The Audio is pretty decent as well. Speakers are pretty decent not to mention it has a built in subwoofer. Everything seemed pretty clear as far as the vocals go.

They Keyboard is done by SteelSeries and is pretty comfortable to type on. The keys are also illuminated and have a program which is very customizable for the LED settings.

The touchpad takes some getting used to but once customized its decent. Honestly though if I'm gaming or doing some long work then I'm usually using a mouse. The left and right click are hidden under the bottom of the touchpad making it look pretty sleek.

The graphics card is pretty decent too. I've been able to LoL, WoW, and FFXIV:ARR with pretty high settings and have good FPS.

The heat dissipation was very well thought through for this laptop in my opinion. It pulls air from the top and expels it from each of the sides at a 45 degree angle upward. This makes sure that the heat doesn't make your legs into toast and ensures that the heat doesn't get trapped under the laptop.

I havent had a chance to use the webcam yet.

Battery life is pretty decent and has a feature that allows the user to toggle between integrated and dedicated graphics in order to optimize battery life.

I love the 16 gigs of ram and the SSD(s) that make this laptop pretty quick. I really loved the how I was able to get so many features along with a slim laptop. It also looks very sleek and classy.

I would recommend this laptop. In hindsight, if I had it to do over, I would have gotten the version that had 2 SSD(s) instead of only one. (FYI the only difference between the two is storage space and an additional SSD)

I bought this Laptop because I wanted something bigger than my Sager NP 7330. I am constantly deployed with limited space, so I was needing something with decent power and a Laptop that was very thin. I read many reviews about people complaining about the temperatures of this Laptop when Gaming. After I purchased this, I contacted the seller because I wanted to return it due to all the negativity I have read. I AM GLAD THAT I DID NOT. I have played Call Of Duty Black Ops II, Battlefield 3, Arma III, and many other Games. I have played Black OPS II for over 2 hours straight and did not have any issues with Heat..(at a solid 60FPS)The GTX-765m is the right card for this Machine.The Laptop never shut down once on me like I thought it would.

This Laptop Boots in about 7-8 seconds from a Cold Boot, maybe faster. I am a big fan of using Raid 0, and MSI did a great job of implementing "Super Raid". My notebook as a 750GB Data Drive, and 2 64GB Msata Drives in Raid 0. The Msata Drives have the OS on them and just a few Games that I play regularly. I am not a big fan of Windows 8, but once I update to 8.1 I am sure I will be just fine.

The Keyboard is made by Steel Series, and has only a slight bit of Flex in it. The lighting effects add a nice look when you are Gaming in the Dark. There is combination after combination of colors you can choose from. If you don't want to look like a Nerd, you can even turn them off.

I am not a big fan of the Touch-Pad, but I also have not updated the touch-pad Drivers yet. I am sure once I do that, it will be just fine.

I have been using this laptop for 1-2 month now on daily basis, got it right before school started.

my upgrades:

4GB RAM

460 7200RPM Harddrive

50GB SSD

core i5 2nd gen turbo boost

Nvidia Geforce 630 1GB

I try to take care of by turning it off every 1-2 days, and use high security. The laptop still turns on and off quickly. I have had several updates, and right now it seems I am not guaranteed to have the laptop to upgrade to windows 8.

Pro: small, light weight, quiet, and doesn't get heat up. It has a beautiful smooth look to it. Has a pretty loud speaker.

Cons: I guess it's pretty expected from customization. A lot of the common features easily crash. I can barely look at pictures with this laptop.

The Nvidia Geforce 420M 1GB doesn't seem to do anything more compare to my old Toshiba with no dedicated graphics card.

What annoys me the most is the keyboard. the mouse is constantly interfering with what I type. Even now, whenever my hand hoovers over the mouse pad, the typing tool gets navigated to a different location, so I have to keep putting it back to where I am typing (if you have to write a lot, this keypad will annoy the heck out of you). I am in pharmacy school, and it requires fast note taking in class, it is really annoying when the mouse goes all over the places which I have to make the mouse to come back to the right place and miss many important things professors talk about. One trick I now use is to just turn off the mouse pad, however that still causes inconvenience.

Another thing that bother's me is the up and down arrow key. The two of them are the size of 1 key, and it's ridiculously hard to get use to (which I still haven't). The sound bottom doesn't work sometimes no matter how you try to press the volume up/down, though I can live with that.

The laptop doesn't fold that far flat, so when I try to play bass, I'd have to bent down a lot to see the screen.

The battery life has decreased significantly it seems since the time of purchase. Even though I try to use the battery life whenever I can and fully charge it before unplugging. It has froze on my once, which I am not so happy about considered it is only 1 month old.

6-22-2013 update:

The battery completely died on me in less than a year, it shows that it has 0% and does not charge. So I performed a diagnosis on "HP Support Assistant" for the battery and got an error code. Then I made a call to 800-HP invent (or 800-474-6836), fortunately the laptop is still under warranty, I was able to get a free battery ($120 worth) to be shipped to me soon.

9-14-2013 update:

After 1 year of normal use in professional school (without those gaming or photoshop stuff), this lap top is getting extremely annoying. Not only it turns on or wakes up from hibernate mode with constant beep sound every time, it also has a sticky key on the down bottom, making me unable to read any of my documents! My last HP from 8 years ago was so good to me, but this terrible experience have made me never want to chose HP again.

My old toshiba protege(r830) died and I recieved my money back from squaretrade.

I had a hp ultrabook envy4 but it wasn't user upgradeable. I returned it and I recieved this inside.

This is my 1st HP laptop and so far the quality is great.

1) Upgradeable to 16gb ram(User Serviceable). This is great for virtual machine testing.

2) User serviceable bays for battery and hard drive.

3) Fast processor and speedy performance.

4) Great screen and the webcam works well.

5) Nice keyboard with good feedback.

Cons:

1) Heavy. at 4.78 lbs. My toshiba was 3.8lbs

2) I wish I didn't have the dvd drive which adds to the weight.

3) Touchpad always gets dirty really easy.

Powers on and off quickly, the sound and video quality are great, there's lots of space for my college assignments and programs, and the graphics card is good enough to run the games I enjoy with ease. All things considered,I am thoroughly satisfied with the product, and will definitely buy another HP computer in the future.

Purchased this little computer at the end of December 2012 for a fantastic price at Amazon. Smooth transaction and speedy delivery. Had it charging up and using it straight from the box. No issues, very quiet and stays extremely cool even if on for long periods of time. Not heavy, weighs exactly 5 pounds on the bathroom scale. I had a small Acer netbook prior to this and my Envy is just as portable and quite attractive as well. It does come with a CD burner which was not listed in the product details. Needed to call Amazon to confirm this. The keys feel fine to me, as there was one review that stated the opposite. It is fast, the screen displays bright and clear graphics. Windows 8 takes a while to get used to but I like it so far, especially the "app" format. All kinds of ports (3 USB) and card reader. Holds a charge for a very long time. Been off the charger all day and still has 7+ hours on it. I searched for a long time to find a lightweight computer with a decent speed and memory that could be my workhorse, as I am using this mainly for business. This little gem has it all! Totally satisfied!!

I purchased a dm4 customized from HP's website, with an Intel Core i3-2350 and 6 GB of RAM, a little over a year ago. As a student on a budget and someone whose last HP computer lasted five years with no issues, it was basically my six-hundred dollar answer to the looming shiny drop-shadow of the Macbook. The beats audio took me a little while to get used to--it sounded kind of off at first--but once it became familiar, I had no issues with it. You can turn beats on and off if you want to (fn + b), and the speakers' sound without it is very tinny and not nearly as good, so that helps endear it to you too. I also have a light-up keyboard, which I thought would be a novelty, but is actually incredibly useful and worth the $25. It makes typing in the dark so, so much easier. My only complaint is it's a straight on-off function, with no changeable degrees of brightness. One point for the Mac.

In order to avoid rambling, I think I'll break this up:

Build: Compared to my last monolith of a computer, the dm4 Pavilion is light and portable, although it doesn't feel as sturdy as some of the other computers out there. This is mostly because, despite the good-looking brushed metal on the back and body, it's more or less lined with plastic, and kind of crunchy to open and close. I would never describe this as a computer I wasn't afraid of breaking. Actually, just a couple days after I got it, I bumped the edge of it into something, and there's now a permanent dent in the silver plastic lining. Very attractive. But it's held together after a year of use and having a couple liquids spilled on it, so it gets points there. It's pretty solid overall.

Speaking of the brushed metal, I can tell you that after a couple months of steady use, it starts wearing to a lighter color where your hands rest. I don't mind this, but it's pretty visible. And one of the things I reliably do not like about HP computers is the finish they use on the backs; this thing holds fingerprints like a menace. If you care about appearance like I do, you'll be cleaning it a lot. And, again, the plastic of the top part gets scratched up and looks flimsy next to the metal itself.

And this may just be my computer, but one thing I've always had issues with is the CD tray. It pops open a lot when you don't want it to just because of how you're holding the computer, and mine is really hard to close again. It gets caught on itself, almost, and I have gotten really annoyed with it before.

Oh, and lately the fan will catch on something and start buzzing really loudly. And I've had the battery randomly pop out once or twice for no reason.

Okay, in short, I am very fond of my computer, but its construction feels a little on the cheap and careless side.

Keyboard: This is my first computer with chicklet keys, and I like them a lot. I find them really easy to type on, and I love how they don't hold dirt the way an older keyboard would. There are F-keys to control the volume of your speakers and brightness of the screen, which is nice, except mine stop working sometimes. Especially the audio controls--it will bring up the "I'm changing the volume!" wheel, but it won't actually do anything until I open up the volume control in the bottom right corner and do it myself.

I personally really like the touchpad, and find it appropriately responsive. I like the slightly rough texture it has, and it almost always picks up on my finger flicks to scroll, enlarge something, etc. The buttons have a pretty loud click when you hit them, but that's about it. I like that they're separate from the touchpad itself, and I like that they're even and in a place that's easy to use and intuitive under my hands.

Screen/Lighting: Now, I'm not a graphics kid, so I'll have little to say about the color quality and pixel quality other than it's good enough for me. I can say for sure that it isn't as vibrant and beautiful as the colors on a Mac, but it serves. Having easily adjustable brightness is always nice, because I tend to have my screen a lot darker than most people. And my screen has survived getting stepped on by a full-grown Great Dane and didn't crack or break, so kudos to it there.

Performance: When I first got this computer, it was hella fast, especially compared to my old one. And, even now, it opens things pretty quickly and pretty reliably. It's starting to get slow after reboots, but I think this is inevitable. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and I will say that my computer usually freezes for a moment or two while opening it, which it didn't do in the beginning. Still, it's serving me very well thus far.

I know I don't have a fantastic graphics card and shouldn't be too uppity about what my computer can and can't do in terms of video games, but I've found it frustratingly slow at some fairly low-demand games. It lags hard on Minecraft unless I'm on the HP Recommended power plan and have my rendering set to Short in the game. I guess the recommendation here is be sure you know what you want to do with this computer, and make sure you can do it based on what you put in and what kind of graphics card you're willing to buy. Mine gets a little laggy on bad days if I have too many things open at once.

The battery life has been really good to me so far on this thing, to the point where, over winter break at my parents' house, I could come downstairs with it fully charged in the morning and not have to go plug it in until around five or six at night. Lately, I think it's finally puttering out a little. If I leave and take it for a 9 AM class, on lowest brightness settings and power saver battery mode, it's dying out on me by about 2 PM. But hey, I think it's done pretty well for how long I've had it!

Gimmicks: No matter what they say about the webcam, it's not very good. Highly pixelated, weird lighting, stupid added effects, take a long time to load, the whole nine yards. I mean, it can take a picture or record a video, and if you want it to Skype with it can hold its own, but it's by no means fantastic, especially in low light. The sound when you record isn't bad, at least; it's pretty human.

HP in general has a really bad habit of filling your computer with dumb things you do not need, and this one is no exception. On start-up it automatically gives you HP Assistant, a bunch of windows of stuff, and other things that don't do much for me but take up space, and a while ago I did a major re-haul and uninstalled a ton of what HP started me with. I haven't missed any of it. If you know what you're doing with computers, you'll probably want to do the same. I've also never, ever had a reason to use QuickWeb, although the idea behind it is nice, I guess.

Overall: My computer serves me well, and I'm very attached to it. My daily computer needs mostly consist of word processing, internet browsing, gaming, and painting/designing, and the Pavilion dm4 has held up on all of these counts. If you don't want a super intensive monster computer that can do everything, I still think this guy is a good choice. Just remember it comes a little cheap for a reason and may be flimsier than you want it to be.

I've really got used to having a touchscreen on my phone and Kindle Fire, but as an author I also really appreciate a proper keyboard. So with that in mind, when it came time to choose a new PC, I decided to plump for the new touchscreen Windows 8 ultrabook from Sony.

My experience started off in rather a bad way, with my first ultrabook lasting a mere two hours before it gave out, never to reboot again. However, the Amazon returns and replacement service was excellent and the very next day I had another ultrabook at my door. This one, it seems, is going to last longer than the first. I've now had it a full 5 days and I've run it through its paces and set everything up on it. I'm using it to write my latest book and also to do all those lovely touchy windows 8 things on the wonderfully clear 13.3" 1366 x 768 touchscreen. My first impressions are that this PC is a gem.

Things I like:

1. Speed of restart from sleep no more waiting and waiting to start using it. You simply close the lid when you're done and then reopen it when you want to continue. It takes about 2 seconds to be ready to use.

2. The ability to switch between the touchscreen, touchpad and keyboard (all interchangeable) once you learn all the gestures and shortcuts it's a really quick user experience.

3. The zippiness of it my previous PC was a three year-old desktop. This ultrabook seems about 6 generations faster.

4. Windows 8 apps Netflix, Angry Birds, Skype, CNN News and a plethora of other apps run just like they do on an iPad or Kindle fire.

5. It just works I know, you expect it to work, but sometimes new things can be a little weird.

So far there is nothing I dislike about it (apart from a lack of some Windows 8 apps but more and more are arriving each day).

I could go on about the battery life, the ports, the keyboard and everything else, but you can read all the technical specs above. the bottom line is would I recommend this PC? Wholeheartedly YES!

Update 8/14/13: I've now had this laptop for 6 months and it's still performing flawlessly. It does a whole lot more than I ever imagined, now that I have attached a second screen to it for when I use it at my desk, as opposed to traveling. Everything I've thrown at it has worked flawlessly. I must admit I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8, but, hey, it is what it is. I love the touchscreen aspect. I love the speed. I love the reliability. Oh, and the battery life!

I got this from work about 4 months ago. I think four months is ample time to be able to give an accurate review of this ultrabook. I really wanted to love this laptop, but I don't. It's very sharp and stylish with its black and silver design but almost laughably clumsy.

Allow me to explain. First and foremost you have to hold the bottom whenever you open it because the hinge mechanism is tight and the bottom isn't weighty enough. Secondly, once you have the laptop open the first thing you'll notice is not the lack of an HD screen but rather the strong glare back into your eyes if there is a light nearby. The screen reflects way too much light and I find myself moving the display back and forth throughout the day just so I can read. Thirdly, the keyboard (although I have to admit that I am getting more used to it) feels carpal tunnel inducing. There is simply very little give to the keys so you feel as if you're tapping away on a flat surface (although touch screen tablets are not uncomfortable). I prefer the feedback you get from other keyboards (such as Dell's XPS line). Additionally, the keys are not smooth but feature a slight rough texture that feels rather cheap.

The touch screen is a cool feature but I must admit that I never use it. It's just not comfortable to hang your arm in front of your screen for an extended period of time. I use a wireless Logitech mouse because the trackpad is annoying as well. It doesn't recognize when you lift one of your fingers off of it unless you take both of them off. This becomes very annoying when you're scrolling (with two fingers) and you take one off so that you can move to cursor to click on something and it continues scrolling down!

I should also mention that about two months after I had it, the touch screen input stopped working. I tried all kinds of troubleshooting, even formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and all drivers but in the end it was a hardware issue. I must give credit where credit is due and after talking to Sony they instructed me to bring the laptop to any UPS store (I didn't have to wrap it) and they would overnight it to their service center in Texas. I received several calls from Sony informing me of the current repair status while it was gone (very unexpected). Within two weeks I had the laptop back in working condition.

My final gripe is that even though I have Windows set to sleep when I close the lid, about once, sometimes twice a week, I get home after leaving work and find the laptop burning hot because it never went to sleep.

We ordered about 15 of these for the office and the feelings are mutual among all of us.

All in all, for the price it is not a terrible laptop but I do think you can find better. It's doing the job as a work laptop but I would never buy it on my own nor could I recommend it to anyone.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO T Series SVT13134CXS 13.3-Inch Touchscreen Ultrabook

For me it came down to this Sony T Series and Asus Vivobook. Price point is very similar; I give Sony the slight nod with hardware specifications, the quality of keyboard and the ability to swap out the battery. Upgrading RAM on both laptops is possible, but I am unsure of the added value. If you are running something that needs 8GB RAM, you shouldn't be buying an ultrabook.

For the keyboard, both feel shallow but the Sony's keyboard is a bit more comfortable (at least to me). Since this laptop is fairly new, check out the reviews on the old non-touchscreen T Series. It is exactly the same except for the screen and upgraded hinges. The screen still bounces when touched, but stays in place and feels solid (so far).

The laptop has a quality feel. If you press around the casing you can flex the topcase around the "Tab" and "Caps Lock" keys, everywhere else it feels solid. Also, the screen has a slight flex but does not seem to be a negative, I believe the touch screen design beefed up the sturdiness from the prior years model.

The design has a business type feel, square edges, I think it might keep its style longer than the Vivobook. The Sony is simple and understated.

One concern I had was the placement of the touchpad. I prefer this to be centered below the space bar to avoid activating the mouse cursor with your palm while typing (on this model it is centered on the topcase), but that does not seem to be an issue on this laptop. Even with contact, the touchpad seems to ignore the touch of the palm. Fan noise, yes the fan is audible on start-up and when resources are heavy, but it hasn't bothered me too much. With any ultrabook relying on a fan for cooling you are going to have this issue.

If you are coming from a Windows 7 environment expect a learning curve. I have read reviews of people who hate Windows 8 and at times the multiple gestures can prove frustrating. Give yourself some time; understand the four points of control on the touchscreen to navigate your system. The windows button is your friend if you get lost. The less you use your keyboard, the better the Windows 8 environment becomes.

I see these ultrabooks as the best of both worlds. A computer that can function as a tablet, but still gives you the tools needed for business use. For the cost (under 700) you are not taking that big a gamble, avoid spending too much on higher grade laptops, use this for a year or two and upgrade again. Spending over $700 on an ultrabook seems like a waste of money to me.

I have gone through hell with the T-Series. After writing an initial positive review the computer started to freeze every 2 hours or so. The only way of fixing it was to do a hard shut down. I sent it to Sony THREE times, leaving me without a computer for over a month. Each time I'd receive the computer, turn it on, and 2 hours later... freeze. Gahh!!!

Finally, they upgraded me to a refurbished (it should have been new, not refurbished) T series but with higher specs. While it is a full keyboard, the keys are very shallow. I'm a transcriber -unfortunately, the keys are less than ideal.

I was looking for a fairly inexpensive laptop and came across this one. Originally I had seen it on ebay, but it was more expensive, so I checked Amazon. The laptop has an older processor, but I don't see any difference in the speed compared to a much more expensive and newer laptop that my husband just bought that has the newest processor out. The only con to this laptop is that there is no built in webcam, but its an easy fix. Just would have been nice if it was built in. Other than that, I love it. Not a ton of features, but has a fast enough processor for web surfing and MS Office. Goes to sleep and comes back to life quickly with Windows 7. Good alternative to a netbook that has a micro-sized screen. I also have the Acer version (straight Acer brand, not Acer eMachines) and it is almost identical to this laptop, but has an AMD processor. I think this processor feels a little faster. Just wish the processor was a dual-core. Also beware that the screen resolution only has a height of 768, which by today's standards is a little short. But for the money, you can't beat it.

I bought mine for about $300 and so far its been a great laptop. My 4 year old watches DVDs on it and cartoons off youtube and its great for surfing the web. It has done everything I have asked it to do and is actually faster than my desktop with a dual core processor. Ive pretty much put away the desktop. It starts right up and shuts down in the blink of an eye as well. My only problem is with the touch pad which seems finicky but I hear theres a fix for that...Im just too lazy to try. This was an excellent value, it does more than a netbook will and at about the same cost. If you just need a basic setup then this is it.

Just got this today. As a test for the processor and ram I downloaded Wow. It runs at about 23 fps. Which is better than the desktop I had that had an AMD processor. It is a new experience working on Windows 7. It is pretty nice, but will take a little bit to get used too. Over all very satified at the moment.

I have bought 3 of these Laptops for myself and family over 2.5 years ago for $348 from Walmart, what a steal! All of them are still up and running strong and we are very happy with them for the money. They are more than enough hardware for school or business.Not for high end gaming, but play descent games at medium settings and are great for HD movies.

I also bought this computer at Wal mart. I thought that I had done a good job of researching the reviews before buying. After sixteen months the computer completely died while watching a DVD. I checked my BIOS battery and was running up to date Norton 360. I called Toshiba and they offered to fix it for $350.00. After researching several forums I learned that this computer has a heat problem(mine never ran too hot)and that you need to have it fully taken a part every year to clean and repaste the heat sink. In the end I salvaged the hard drive and will never buy a computer on sale from Wal mart again.

For the average person what a wonderful buy. I had been looking for 2 years for a basic laptop at a decent price. Bought it at Walmart for $348.00. I have used it for about a month and am more than pleased with my purchase. It has good speed, the 17" screen is very nice, the portability is great(set up wirelessly and use anywhere around the house), battery lasts about 2.5 hours(on balanced setting)or plug it in. Vista basic is actually not too bad. The only thing I added was Windows Office 2003(because I'm used to it),however the existing software is adequate. All in all a good solid computer.

I just purchased my Sony laptop to replace a 2 year old HP pavillion series that had many overheating problems. This laptop is does not have much lag time and does not seem to have the same over heating issues. I know I could feel different long term, but this last month I have been very pleased with how it runs my applications/games. I was even pleased that it did not seem to be burdened with a lot of extra programs. I definately would recommend this laptop for someone who need a little faster processing laptop. I know there are a few cons, but I have not run into the problem of accidently turning it off because the turn off is on the side where the mouse may be.

I've owned this laptop since Jan 2011 and its been great. Great hardware and all-around performance. I bought it at a brick and mortar store for $1300 after taxes, so $1800 strikes me as pricey (maybe I just got lucky?) but it was a great value buy for me.

Battery life is short(90-100min) if you're using wi-fi or running the bluray drive, however if you have the wi-fi off it jumps up to almost 3hrs on power saver mode. I haven't had issues since I plan around those things. In addition the 5400rpm harddrive seems rather laggy if you're running large programs, not annoying but noticeable when loading sometimes.

I'm currently looking into a RAM upgrade and getting an SSD drive to replace the stock hdd to help with "laggy" feeling.

All in all, this is a great laptop if you can find it at the right price point. I highly recommend it!

I find this laptop to be super fast and efficient for video editing, etc. so have to give it 5 stars. Using CS5 Creative Suite Pro Premiere Pro and it's a breeze working on this Vaio model. Left it at the standard 6G of RAM but upgraded the OS to Windows Ultimate (actually, dual-booted so I can continue to have Sony coverage).

Minor down-side is battery life (to be expected for i7 CPU) and also the fan nice (again, loaded machines tend to generate more heat). Bought it from the Sony outlet Center for a cut-throat price so am super-happy.

Bought my keyboard skin on eBay (from China because Sony didn't make em). Got my protector case and adapter case from Amazon (zero tax) so I'm all good.

Don't forget to email yourself the Serial Number for this and other gadgets you may have in case it's lost or stolen ;)

Just bought a unit from a local store. I agree with another review...the touch screen is a great match with Win8. However, I have noticed two issues. The keyboard seems to be quite sensitive. When I type normally like I would on my old laptop, I've noticed that some keystrokes were registered more than once, and hence, causing certain letters to repeat. As a result, I have to use backspace often to correct typing errors. Alternativelyy, I could let computer do auto correct butt auto-correct isn't always accurate. Notice the previous sentence has the extra "y" and extra "t" from repeated letters and they were not auto-corrected.

Also, the touchpad seems to be loose. Even with very light tapping with finger tip, the touch pad makes some clacky noises as if it may come off. I don't know if the touchpad is normal. But, I am going to stores to try out demo units to see if those touchpads have the same issue.

-----------Update

Checked with the store, clacky/loose touchpad isn't normal. But it was easily fixed by tighten two screws (on the bottom side) underneath the touchpad.

"Repeating letters" issue while typing is not as severe if I place the unit firmly on a table. Since it's an ultrabook, many will do typing in a less-than-optimal position. Based on my research, the sensitivity of the keyboard may be optimized for soft/touch typist due to its shallow key travel.

Battery life is about 4 hours on normal & mixed use. Although I'd wish it's longer, I can live with it since it's such a thin laptop.

----------Update

Put the unit to sleep by closing the lid when battery indicator was at 20%. 8 hours later. It was at 18%. So, 8-hour sleep drained 2% of power. Don't know if that's good or bad...but my first impression is that it's not as good as advertised. 6% power consumption within 24 hours means it can only stand by for 17 days (assuming linear power consumption).

Besides the clacky touchpad, which is easily fixed, the whole unit has superb fit & finish. Edges are very sharp, especially around the screen. It gives an impression that one may cut oneself easily. I've forced my fingertips and palms thru all edges without any cuts. I can't say the same for other body parts though...try at your own risk.

High resolution screen is GREAT. However, it's a double-edged sword. All clickable menu, buttons, links become so small that it is difficuult to click them using fingertips. This is particularly worse around the corners. e.g. I couuld eaislyy close the window instead of resizing it at upper right corner.

I am still finding my ways around Win8. But I can confidently say that if you don't want or don't care about Win8, you should save yourself $200 and look for other excellent ultrabooks that have no touch screens. In addition, a large, responsive, and accurate multi-gesture touchpad can be just as effective for Win8 (i.e. about 80%-90%). So, a touch screen is really just a nice-to-have for Win8 but not a necessity. This unit's touchpad is quite good...so I find myself using the touch screen less and less for productivity work. However, I use the touch screen almost exclusively for leisure browsing of web sites where typing is not really needed.

After a few days of using it, I can confidently say that one should realistically expect the battery life to be no more than 4 hours. If you tweak the power saving configurations, you may squeeze another hour or two out of it.

--------Update

Noticed that wifi isn't reliable (i.e. disconnected) whenever I am at busy or low quality hotspots. I have not experienced this with my 2-year old Sony laptop. I suspect this may have to do with the power management configuration/setting.

After using the unit extensively for about one week, I'd say the sensitive/touchy keyboard is the only remaining annoyance for me. I also wish it has longer battery life but it's a conscious trade-off for such a thin ultrabook. Overall, it's a very gorgeous ultrabook with beautiful glass top that you can even serve sushi and sashimi on it.

-------------Update

The intermittent wifi disconnects (while on battery) can be fixed or minimized by changing the property in advanced power management for 'wifi adaptor'. Change it from max battery to max performance.

I am starting to warm up to the Win8 Metro/Modern UI. Certain activities are just more efficient if you simply lift your arm/finger to point & click on a touch screen ... instead of (a) lift your arm/finger onto touchpad, (b) move the mouse cursor to the desired button/link, and (c) click or tap the touchpad.

Win8 definitely requires you to "mix & match" how you use tablet/phone and how you use a traditional PC/laptop. It just takes time to warm up to it.

Of course, you need to have a touch screen to take full advantage of Win8 Metro/Modern UI. However, a touch screen isn't a must for Win8 because you can also change Win8 back to the classic Windows interface.

Hi let me say this is the first time I'm writing a review of any type on Amazon or anywhere else. So I'm particularly proud that my review is mostly positive.

So the positives:-

(1) Light and its the most practically slim PC you can get while retaining as many of the necessary characteristics one needs to be productive; its has (2) fast USB3 ports, neatly located in the upper right side of the laptop.

(2) The design is very cool and attractive and I've been getting inquires from friend like ooowwee cool MacBook LOL; its not but looks just as good as any well designed piece of tech worthy of Apple engineering.

(3) The complementary accessories that comes with the Ultrabook such as the wireless Bluetooth mouse and neat carrying case was a nice touch as well and very unexpected; maybe I didn't read the product packaging before I bought it but I didn't expect it so it was a nice gesture.

(4) Loaded with a few good Acer approved apps for win8, such as their music and file storage options nothing I going to immediately take up but its free, so thanks.

(5) Overall system performance well in a word excellent; I can't find a single thing wrong from boot to windows shut down or sleep mode. Truth is I'm now getting to understand win8 allot has changed so its impacting my productivity a little but that nothing to do with the system and all to do with me.

But like everything else they are some caveats so the Cons :-

(1) The location of the power button is poorly conceived since its along the left side and near power cord I keep hitting the power button by accident NOT-GOOD it happens to often.

(2) The idea of a touchscreen laptop seens sexy but its not... I keep having to clean the darn thing and windows 8 isn't ready for primetime as yet but that not Acer's fault.

So my over all rating for this sweet piece of tech is 8.5

I received this ultrabook as a gift and now I'm giving you my first impressions as a review. I'm writing this review using my Acer S7-391-6810 to be exact :)

I have to say I'm impressed with the performance of this little computer and found the following on the positive side:

Gorgeous... ohh boy it is good looking.

Very thin

Solid, you can handle the ultrabook while walking or standing using one hand on one of the lower corner of the keyboard while typing with the other hand.

The main body and the keyboard face is aluminium while the screen is an aluminium frame sandwiched between white glass (gorilla they say but i just can't tell)

The bottom of the UB is plastic though the whole package does justify the price range because it does feels premium.

Very good performance and i looove the touch screen.

Includes a very light plastic bluetooth mouse but i do like it.

Also includes the ethernet and vga dongles so the price you pay is almost all you need.

On the bad side, I respectfully disagree with reviewers saying the keyboard is rubbish. It is NOT and I'm saying this writing with mine... the keyboard while not as good as the one in my Macbook Pro, is good nevertheless, but I do agree with reviewers saying the touchpad is rubbish... well it is...it is so rubbish that before I found a feasible solution for mine, I was thinking Acer included a mouse for you to stay away from it.

The thing is though, I just can't tolerate the tapping function of none of the touch pads I've ever used in my life and this one is by no means an exception... I was about to throw away this UltraBook because of the pad but I gave it a second chance doing what I did with my Powerbook, Macbook, Macbook Pro old and new... I deactivated the tapping function with a little bit more tweak. Let's see what I did:

On the desktop mode or whatever the windows 7 like mode name is (I'm a mac user and while I do like Windows 8 I'm not familiar with the names yet :) ), look for the icons on the lower right corner. There's a touchpad icon, double click on it and a touchpad control panel appears.

This was a replacement laptop for me and I would have given it 5 stars but from the moment I tried to use it the pin that connects to the charger seems to be loose and I have to do a lot to get the laptop to charge. Once it does charge it keeps a charge for a good while. But you first have to get it to charge. Other than that I would have given it 5 stars the laptop meets all other expectations for school and work. Speed and efficiency

I use my toshiba satellite l655 every single day and really love it. I have had to send it in and have modem replace after 60 days but was still covered under warrenty luckily, but other than that i have had no problems at all.
