I needed something to run multiple apps including powerpoint and video simultaneously with no lag. This does the job. The keyboard took some getting used to, the keys do not have the dull plastic feel that I am used to with a Dell, but more of a cold metallic feel. One quirk I am trying to figure out with Windows 8 ... there seems to be an automatic swipe gesture I keep doing with the mousepad when I swipe up/to the right to move around the screen. It takes me to the start screen, which is annoying, and I would love to turn that feature off. Windows 8 on a non-touchscreen device can be a bit awkward and I wish I had windows 7. There is no start menu to access programs or quickly shutdown ... instead I control/alt/delete to shutdown or go back to the start screen by putting the mouse in the lower left screen of the computer and accessing the settings ... takes too much time. Overall, this is a good machine for the money, and I must point out that the audio/speakers are top notch. I am able to play for my entire classroom without external speakers, a first for any laptop I have ever had. Also, the battery has lasted me an average of 5 hours with the screen brightness turned way down. It is also a very quiet machine -no loud fans or processing sounds. Sometimes I forget that it' even on.

Update: The annoying automatic swipe function I was talking about turns out to be something that is actually fantastic called ASUS Smart Gesture. You can turn features on/off, like using two fingers for scrolling, one finger for select, three fingers to navigate pages, etc.

This laptop can be found for under $300 and it is well worth it if you are willing to install Ubuntu Linux 12.10. If you're willing to do that, you'll end up with a laptop that feels like a MacBook Pro which last I checked was $1,500.

The trackpad is little sensitive and ethernet wasn't picked-up out of the box by Ubuntu which are the only reasons I'm giving it 4 stars. Otherwise, love this for a Linux laptop.

I bought this laptop 2 months at k mart, and is had been a horrible experience..the keypad is way to sensitive and when i write something with the keyboard it goes crazy and all my information automatically gets delete it, or end up in another location of the text...is really annoying!! other than that, is great but prepare for some frustrations when chatting.

HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx Intel Core i7 Review

Great machine.

I use this for regular household stuff, but also for running Line 6 music processors and KRK near-field sound monitors. Sounds great. And the large screen allows me to work with multiple apps (video, audio, and text simultaneously) without an additional video monitor.

It's plug-and-play into my large-screen TV with an excellent picture for online sports and movies even with a straight RGB connection (supported), though it's pretty large for dragging around the house.

I'm enjoying the step up from XP to 7. A lot of software downloads/updates initially, but all installed seamlessly. Blotware? Some but I've certainly seen a lot worse.

I can hear the fan, but for the amount of power in this slim case, the fan noise is not more than would be expected. I run CPUID HWMonitor to watch temperature and other hardware diagnostics. The fan is definitely doing it's job. I had difficulty adjusting to the touchpad, so I bought a cheap, Logitech wireless mouse. All is good.

Recommended. I picked up one of these at Best Buy for less.

This computer is great! I use this for everyday usage and im glad to say this pc looks great runs great and has alot of features. Ive got mine from best-buy with geek squad protection. After 2 months of using this computer iv had no problems.Finger scanner is a awesome feature. I also love how fast this thing is.For the size of this machine the battery life is excellent no problems there. I defiantly recommend this computer no matter how old you are.

I love having a nice wide screen, and have had no problems with features on this laptop, but I cannot recommend purchasing this simply because the fan noise is sort of....extreme. It is extreme to the point of being distracting. I do not have the vent in a place that would make the fan have to work harder to vent, or anything like that. It is simply noisy. Would not purchase this one again.

I purchased my dv7-6c95dx a little more than a year ago. It had awesome specs and i was exited to have a viable laptop that could run memory intensive programs with ease (games, video streaming services, hd video, etc.). It did run very well, for the first couple months. The cooling fan became a very big distraction, constantly running at full power, even when i had the power setting on power saver + lowest screen brightness. it became a constant drone and my siblings frequently called it "the jet engine". i stored it in a place where ventilation would not be an issue either. a few months later, the hard drive failed. got it replaced and still encountered hard drive issues (failed to boot when opening the lid, LEDs came on but screen didn't, tried shifting through displays and everything, only way to fix it was to hard boot) also, upon loading certain programs/booting, the CD drive would clunk every so often. The screen is too big for the hinges it is attached to. after months of opening and closing, the strain on the hinges has caused them to wear, and just recently (right after my 1 year warranty expired), the right hinge broke completely and i can no longer close the lid due to the screen starting to bend the black screen trimming. if i were to close the lid, the screen wouldn't come with it and i would simply crack my screen. Also since my warranty expired, my cooling fan no longer runs at full blast! that may sound like a good thing, but now my laptop overheats. even with the power saver setting + lowest brightness. Battery only lasted 8 months, now i have to constantly leave it plugged in. If left unplugged, with no intensive programs running, i'm lucky if it lasts an hour. My little gateway, i3 with 4gigs mem and 250gigs hard drive space lasted 4 TIMES AS LONG as this P.O.S. never had any problems with it, and it still runs fine, but i donated it to one of my siblings because i planned on getting a better laptop. or so i thought. extremely disappointed.

Best Sony VAIO T Series SVT14115CXS 14-Inch Ultrabook (Silver) Deals

Sony VAIO T Series SVT14115CXS 14-Inch Ultrabook
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I just received the unit today. Sony had(has) a deal going with about half off on the 512GB SSD drive option so I picked one up fully loaded.. i7, 8GB RAM, and the 512GB SSD drive. Everything has met expectations thus far except the screen. I was really expecting a better screen than what I am seeing thus far. Usually Sony has really nice vibrant screens but the screen is average I would say. It is not bad by any means but nothing like a Mac or even some of the other higher end Windows laptops out there. Ok other than that it is awesome. It cold boots in about 5 seconds and that is no exaggeration. Everything is blazing fast and that is mostly due to Windows 8 and the SSD Drive. So far I am very pleased with it other than the screen as I mentioned. There is nothing else to mention as a negative yet.

Pros

Beautiful machine

Very light weight

Nice keyboard

Loaded with all the ports you will need

Blue Ray drive

The only laptop I could find out there that has a 512 SSD option other than a Mac and right now you can get it for a song by comparison

Comes with the excellent Sony Imagination Studio package.

Cons

Screen isn't as bright or as high resolution as it could be

Just a follow up 12/13 After calibrating the screen using the Windows calibration tool and adjusting the color in the Intel control panel I was able to get the screen to look a lot better. Still not retna quality by any means, but much, much better. On another note, I discovered after I brought it into the office that it doesn't have a laptop locking cable port. That kind of sucks but still over all I am very pleased with the purchase. If you can swing it get one with the SSD drive it just screams.

This is a relatively inexpensive Sony product and honestly, there is not an electronics company anywhere that is as consistent as Sony in terms of quality at lower price and intelligent design over a broad range of electronics categories. Enough gushing about Sony, though.

Out of the box, the laptop is sleek, light (4lbs) and pretty. My sister actually called this laptop "sexy".

What's great about this laptop? After the initial setup, inevitable updating of software and full charge of the battery, you get to see just how awesome the 32 GB cache memory is. Booting up, as one reviewer said, "literally takes 5 seconds". That's with a 5400 rpm hard drive. And bringing the computer out of sleep is instantaneous (usually).

Maintenance is easy with the "Sony Vaio Care" built right into the computer. Sony provides 3 buttons called "Assist", "Web" and "Vaio". I haven't messed with "Web" and "Vaio" yet, but the "Assist" button has 2 roles. If you press it when the computer is shutdown, it automatically turns the computer on and brings up a menu of recovery and BIOS options. No more trying to remember "Is it F10 or F2 that gets me to the BIOS? Is F8 Windows Recovery?". Assist takes you right there. When the OS is already loaded "Assist" brings up the Sony Vaio Care menu, allowing you to tweak the basic settings for power management, sound, and a few other things. I really have grown to love this design feature.

There's almost no bloatware on the computer. Just a trial of Kaspersky anti-virus and MS Office. Both are easy to remove.

I've already mentioned speed. I do have to bring up that while power management settings don't seem to affect boot time, they do mess with performance. At "High Performance" settings, the processor and memory handle most of the nonsense I throw at them. Run Photoshop, Excel and Matlab at the same time...while listening to music? Not a problem. Do the same thing with power management on "Power Saving", well, then you experience SOME jumps and lags in performance. I'm not complaining.

What's merely good? I'm not a big fan of the keyboard. I was spoiled on my last device which was a 15.6 inch ASUS lap with chiclet keys and a 10key. This thing doesn't have enough real estate for a ten key, but I find typing to be a little less responsive to what I'm used to.

Speakers are good, but not great. Music IS great through headphones, so the problem is NOT with the HD integrated sound card.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO T Series SVT14115CXS 14-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Fast, good resolution screen, good battery life, does not get too hot...........However, somehow I wished I had selected amodel / brand with the backlit keyboard. I have heard that some machine can be modified to be that way, but I do not know if this one can.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO T Series SVT14115CXS 14-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

The computer is good and very light, so easy to take on business trips. I wanted a DVD player and this was about the lightest, most compact computer I could find that also had a DVD player. Sound quality is good on the speakers and the screen is beautifully clear.

I have had a little problem connecting to a WiFi network at a client's office and from what the tech guy there said, it may be an issue with the NIC card the Sony is using. Also, sometime the keyboard responsiveness is not great, with the keys getting stuck.

Overall, though, a very usable machine that is also attractive. I'm glad I own this.

Great to use once you get used to Windows 8 -which we now love-very slick.

Computer boots up quickly and is a joy to use.

Love the keyboard.

Sounds nothing to write home about but we don't use it for that except via TV-so makes no difference.

I got this laptop as a Christmas/graduation present from my parents. Overall, I'm so pleased. The battery life is amazing, the display is awesome, and the fact that it already came with Windows 7 was really convenient. And it's so lightweight! As a web design major, I carry this thing around everywhere. My previous Dell brickbook nearly dislocated my shoulders. I'd recommend maybe getting a different color if you're worried about fingerprints, though, as they're quite noticeable. The only negative thing I have is the touch pad gestures. I thought that the "pinch" zoom in/zoom out features would be really handy but while browsing the web it would often zoom in and out on me without me doing much. But I just disabled that feature and it's great otherwise. :) It's a great buy, I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have owned Dells for the past 10 years and have never had one issue with any of their machines. This laptop is no exception. I would recommend the laptop for the average user who isn't a big gamer and isn't working on memory-intensive High Def video editing.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron 1750 17.3-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop - Up to 4 Hours

I have had a Dell desktop for a long time and have always been happy with their products and service. I had a tough time deciding if I was going to get this particular laptop as there were a few very negative reviews regarding their service. I decided to give it a go despite the negative reviews and although I have only had this laptop a day, I am extremely happy with it. The screen is bright and clear, the keyboard is easy to use and not cramped and difficult to navigate, the laptop weight is the most surprising thing to me. I thought it would be much heavier! All in all, I am very pleased with the entire experience. Especially how quickly Amazon got it to me. Normally Dell makes you go through a laundry list of "personalization" steps, and then it takes a long time for them to "build" it. I guess a lot of people want or need to personalize their laptops, but this one was perfect for me and I love how simple it was to buy.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron 1750 17.3-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop - Up to 4 Hours

I bought this laptop after 3 months of very extensive research. For the price and the specs it seemed like the best possible choice. Boy oh boy was I wrong. After only 3 months I started to have problems with the charger. The laptop would only work if plugged in, it wouldn't charge and if the charger was even bumped, the computer would shutdown due to lack of power. So, called Dell and after a lengthy discussion to many other problems I'd been having as well, turns out the motherboard needed to be replaced, the whole charging housing, the hard-drive and the wireless card. I will say, I had great customer service and my laptop was returned quickly, but I did have to send it in. But, when I got the laptop back, they must've put in a different charger housing because my original plugin barely fits the hole, which was octogon before and is now round.

It has now been 1 year that I've had it and the screen is going out. There's something wrong with the hinge and it makes the screen do very funny things and I have to jiggle it until the screen is clear. So, this is the worst laptop ever made. It's just kind of cheap as well. The plastic on it is awful.

I got a great deal from Dell for a refurbished Inspiron 1750. There were no surprises, I knew what I was getting, and I've been very happy with it since. I wanted to balance the reviews for this, because 1 was a Dell customer service review, which has nothing to do with the product. It's capacity is way above what an average Internet/Word user would need, and the weight considering the size is lighter than most 17+ inch screens.

The laptop is very beautiful; the color is subtle. The keyboard is so comfortable to use. The laptop is very lightweight and is very portable ( I attend grad school at night so this is an important factor for me). The battery life is also very good.

I found the Windows 8 operating system to be a lot of fun. I think anyone who is used to using devices with apps will appreciate Windows 8. I was nervous about buying this computer based upon the reviews of Windows 8, but I'm glad I took the chance. There will be a learning curve, but I was able to navigate my home screen, rearrange apps, download apps, etc... within a day or less.

I would recommend this laptop.

excelente por el precio, aquí en Venezuela funciona muy bien, me llego en perfecto estado, este modelo no lo he encontrado en mi ciudad. hice una buena elección.

Best Deals for Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown) Windows 8 Notebook PC

I recommend this laptop for its overall specifications, including weight (mobility), USB3 capabilities, Large RAM, and overall speed. However, it is an entry level model. The chassis is flimsy and made of a generally low grade plastic and does not feel very sturdy in general, although it is not falling apart and has no physical defects out of the box. I got the 2nd Level The system is not a touch screen system (I bought it knowing this that is likely why the 50% discount on retail price), does not come with Windows 8 Pro preinstalled, which is only $35 to $65 US dollars at the time of this posting, and so it is disappointing because this is originally a Windows 7 system that was upgraded by the OEM to Windows 8x, and the processor, although fast and capable of virtualization, is not SLAT compatible and so does not allow for Support of the Microsoft Hypervisor Platform Technology.

It is a 64bit system with dual core 2.40GHz Processor, and 4 GB RAM, and a 300+ GB HDD, and is very light (like 3 lbs or less) with a nice screen size. So as mentioned previously is quick and mobile, but the flimsy chassis give me a little doubt about its durability. Thus, it is a nice system for a Student or a Home User that needs an extra laptop that is easy to carry and capable of running Windows 8 RT and .NET Desktop Applications.

Overall it is a recommendation from me because I still like working primarily on my desktop (I have Windows 8 Phone and Android Tablet for Touch Screen Apps) to do most of my general computing and programming, and because the specs are nice USB3, HDMI, Fast Ethernet Adapter, Broadcom 802.11n Wi-Fi Network Adapter, and other up to date features make this a fast and contemporary system that will be able to run all of the present and near future technologies, and if I don't physically abuse it I don't expect the any issues as a result of the entry level materials used to build the chassis.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown) Windows 8 Notebook PC

For the price you can't go wrong, yes it does finger print easy get over it it's not a show car. Windows 8 is not a problem if you take some time to navigate around if you don't have time to work through the learning curve go with Windows 7 both are solid operating systems. Only reason I didn't give full 5 stars is the track pad is a bit wide and my palms tend to touch sending pointer wild this will become less of a problem the more I use the notebook. Other reason is I haven't yet put the machine through a true and thorough ringer of daily use so far I don't see any glaring flaws.

Acer AS5740-5513 15.6-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

First off, I just want to say that unless you actually OWN a product, you should not rate it. Period. The purpose of a review is to critique the item itself not the accuracy of Amazon's product listing. The previous 1-star reviewer obviously does not understand this, so please IGNORE their rating, because this laptop really is a gemstone (pun intended).

I'll start with the downsides of the laptop. For one thing, I wish it had Firewire. That is the one key port that I really miss on this machine. eSATA would be nice, too, but for the price, I can live without it. Also, the battery life could be better. I haven't used the machine enough to give you a precise figure, but I'd say the battery lasts between 2 and 3.5 hrs depending on what I'm doing. Not terrible, but not great either Dell's competing i3 model has almost double the wHr capacity. Cosmetically, the laptop is a little dated looking. It is made of fingerprint-attracting glossy plastic, and the lid has rounded edges, which are not exactly in style. Then again, I personally care more about the laptop's functionality and build quality than its aesthetics. Here's where the good stuff comes into play: there is a little bit of flex here and there, but on the whole, the machine feels pretty solid. I'm not terrified of breaking it by setting down on the table to quickly. What I really like about the laptop is its abundance of features and LOW price tag. The Core i3 CPU is pretty darn fast for most applications, and the 4GB of memory (which is DDR3, by the way) is plenty for me. It's nice to have bluetooth built in, and I'm glad they didn't skimp on the USB ports, either. The keyboard and mouse are both pretty decent. The integrated Intel graphics (which are actually built onto the i3 CPU die) are definitely NOT for intense gaming (sorry buddy, no Crysis), but they actually are fine for casual games and some older shooters. The GMA HD on the i3 proc is quite a bit faster than the last-gen 4500MHD, and it is roughly the same performance-wise as an nVidia 9300m GS. It runs FEAR smoothly on low settings, Half-Life 2 on max, and handles WOW just fine on medium. Obviously, simple games like Bejeweled and Zuma run perfectly, too.

So far, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a laptop this good for this price. I bought mine for $550, and I couldn't be happier. Then again, I haven't owned the laptop for very long, so I may still discover some major flaw. If so, I'll update my review. Otherwise, I highly recommend this laptop to everybody!

I bought this laptop when it was on sale at office max recently for $480.00 plus tax. IT IS FANTASTIC!! the i3 processor is lightning fast, the LCD screen is excellent for streaming videos. beautiful picture. this laptop is built solid (it is heavy) which is ok for me since I never take it out of the house anyway. the shiny finish on the shell does show fingerprints, but really thats all I can say negative about this great machine!! I am not a gamer, I am a basic applications user (videos, emails etc etc) so this laptop more that fits the bill for my needs.the keyboard works great, the touchpad works like a charm. LOVE IT..!!! also...FYI..the store offered me the extended warranty.. 2 years for $200.00 extra!!! forget that...I bought an extended warranty right here at amazon (squaretrade warranties).. 3 years..includes accidents/spills/dropping..for $82.00!! another great deal from amazon..:)

Best Deals for Acer AS5740-5513 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue)

Okay, when I saw this laptop in an ad, I instantly fell in love with its performance vs price. It has the newest line of Intel CPU (the i3) and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. This thing screams for the $500 I paid for it.

Win 7 gives the CPU a 6.2, which is by far the best laptop CPU I have owned. The graphics rating is 4.6 (Aero) and 5.3 (Gaming). Again, I have never had a laptop close to that. As stated before, it still won't run Crysis very well, if at all, but your mainstream casual games, it will play with ease.

Pros: i3, 4 GB DDR3, it connects to my wireless at 300 mpbs!!!! My new, as in got in in December, Acer Netbook, which claims to have N only connects at 54 mpbs, so when I saw that this one hit 300 mpbs, I about threw a party. It has HDMI out, VGA out, and 4 USB ports. Most 15.6" laptops only have 3 USB ports.

Cons: No Bluetooth, firewire, e-sata, and a 5400 RPM HDD. For me, it doesn't really matter. I have never had bluetooth, and never used firewire or e-sata, so it isn't like I will miss it. While I make the 5400 RPM HDD a con, for the average user, you won't even notice a difference. I have had laptops with both 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM HDDs and for everyday computing, which this thing is designed for, you will not notice a difference.

It has Intel Graphics, but they are considerably better than previous Intel graphics (again 4.6 and 5.3 experience ratings). The 1366x768 resolution is low since I went from a desktop to this, but I will manage.

All in all, if you can get this laptop for $500 plus tax, BUY IT! No other $500 laptop will touch it. I am very pleased with my purchase.

This laptop has a good specification for the price. Who would pay out anything without doing due diligence and knowing what you are going to get for your money? I personally check several sources when making purchases.

I'm a very experienced computer user; more than a so called "power user". The first thing I always do immediately after purchasing a new system is format, delete partitions, create new partition and install a fresh copy of my OS of choice. I like Win 7 64 bit, which this laptop comes loaded with, BUT THERE ARE NO DISCS INCLUDED!! Major mistake on ACER's part. The laptop is full of bloatware/nagware/etc. I know computer mfrs make money from software companies by installing this crap, but I hate it. I sent ACER an email concerning this, but not a response at all. I've heard bad things about ACER's lack of customer support and I'm beginning to believe it.

I did however get a good deal on this machine. $497.00 out the door sales tax and all. It's for my Daughter's graduation/birthday/beginning college. It's fast, 4gigs (New Intel i3/4 gigs 1066Mhz DDR3/1066 Front Side Bus/320 HDD/LED/etc. (see tech specs). I like the rounded blue case. Nice feeling keys/touch pad as well.

Not full (1080P) HD, however downloaded HD vids and DVDs look pretty good. This Aspire is not able to play today's top 3D games with full blown eye candy (but my Daughter is going into Pre-Law and not computer graphics :)

If bloatware and being unable to reload OS (with an included disc there are other ways however) is of importance to you, please be forwarned.

I would like to start off by stating that you will not find a lot of reviews about this computer, because it is not a mainstream reviewed computer and therefore does not get the comparison reviews of HP, Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Acer and some other popular name brands. MSI is one of the world's largest motherboard and video card manufacturers. In addition, MSI also manufactures a wide range of other computer products including laptops, All-in-One PCs, servers, and industrial PCs. MSI is a powerful and trusted name in the computer world and is well respected among computer savvy business users and computer assemblers.

PROS: This is a very nice well built computer, it has a lot of handy icon keys and tabs right on the keyboard so that you can do a lot of productive work similar to a smart phone while on the fly. Just read the simple instructions provided on the Manual, Driver, and Software CD. Once you have read the Manual, you will learn what the keys do by the icon on them and you're good to go. The MSI G Series GT70 computer is not loaded down with useless software that you end up having to remove to keep from loading up your start-up memory and hard drive. The keyboard is beautifully lit, which makes it great for use in dark areas. Technologically, this computer will meet most needs of the gaming enthusiast, as it was designed from the ground up to do this. We buy gaming computers because they crunch our 3-D CAD drawings faster than most computers, and this one definitely meets our needs.

CONS: Because this is a robust computer, it is a little heavier than some you may be used to. It is not one I would buy to carry around in the airport.

SUMMARY: GREAT COMPUTER

This is my first non-Thinkpad computer since 1996. In the past few years I have been using T and X series. The new Thinkpads are heavy and screen resolution is not any better than other laptops. Particularly X220, which is useless with 768 vertical resolution. I chose this computer over Thinkpad T420s, HP Envy Spectre and Sony S 15.4 inch, because:

Pros:

1It is the lightest and thinnest laptop among 14 and 15 inch laptops.

2Has matte screen. I don't understand how people work on glossy screens.

3Is has HDMI, USB3, 8GB RAM, SSD and a solid build.

4It boots unbelievably fast. My work Thinkpad T420 has SSD hard drive but it takes much longer to boot.

5It is extremely quiet. Again, the most quiet laptop I have ever seen.

6Compare its spec. to Mac Book pro and Air to realize how advance this laptop is. It is lighter, has better screen resolution and boots faster.

Cons:

1Widescreen are not good for professional work. The vertical resolution is too low and you need to scroll up and down. At the same time you have empty margins on the right and left side of your window. But not Samsung's fault.

2Keyboard is not very comfortable, and you hit the mouse pad every so often. You somehow cannot type fast either.

3I prefer Thinkpad's Trackpoint. You work faster with Trackpoints. Again, not Samsung's fault.

4My scale indicates that this computer in 3.8 lbs and not 3.5 lbs mentioned in the specs.

Expect to spend some time installing Windows updates.

pros

fast boot

elegant

able to upgrade to win pro (service pack, upgrade anytime, thx for advice)

light

not too much bloatware

quiet

not too hot

compact

cons

touchpad is about to take me over the edge. my hands keep hitting and moving cursor. i want to explode it's so frustrating. hoping there's a way to disable the outside edges. also click is not as easy as thinkpad. may be a deal killer for me. i have installed the latest driver. UPDATE: i installed a logitech bluetooth mouse which screwed up the driver... did a system restore and much better. now largest complaint for trackpad is the click, it can get confused clicking and moving mouse at same time.

screen is fine, not great, but more than sufficient for work, ok with video.

sound is mediocre. don't understand why they place on bottom, muffles sound.

keyboard is workable, but trackpad issue so bad that i'm starting to hate the keyboard as well. also may be a little smaller than my t500, so hands starting to cramp.

power strip, body is well designed, but plug enormous, and two wires... why?

Best Deals for Samsung Series 9 NP900X4B-A02US 15-Inch Laptop (Mineral Ash Black)

I have had this ultrabook for about a week now and absolutely love it. I came from a 14.1" Dell e6400. The 15" screen is truely the perfect size. Dual windows work well on here. I love the lightweight factor at 3.5lbs. While comparing at the Microsoft Store, even though some were only a pound heavier, the light and slimness is worth the cost. Also this has much better battery than some of the other ultrabooks. The mouse pad is the latest and greatest. The boot and resume is extremely fast. Also the backlit keyboard is such a nice feature to type in dim to dark lighting. Additionally the screen autoadjusts immediately to changes in light which is nice as well. Hope it works out as well for you as it is for me!

UPDATE

I have now had my ultrabook for over a year. I loved using this for school, but did run into the issue of not having a lot of memory, now that I don't nee so many files and applications, it's great! It still seems like one of the best options around!

**One thing I MUST mention however, THE CHARGER PORT DOES NOT MATCH COMMON CHARGERS! It is nearly impossible to find a charger for this laptop and they WILL bend and break due to the tiny charging port, that is my only complaint about it, but it is extremely annoying.

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 9 NP900X4B-A02US 15-Inch Laptop (Mineral Ash Black)

Pros:

1. Beautifully crafted, blade thin and very quiet.

2. Boots up fast in under 20 seconds.

3. Not too much pre-installed software. Only a few Samsung utility programs unlike my Toshiba this one replaced.

Cons:

1. When typing, from time to time, my left thumb would hit the touchpad by accident therefore moving the cursor. The touchpad should be made smaller. But it can be turned off with Fn+F5 keys. This partially solves the problem as I always use a wireless mouse. But every time the laptop wakes up, Fn+F5 must be applied again which I often forget and is only reminded by the runaway cursor.

2. Low storage capacity. Out of the box, only 58GB is usable. I deleted the backup area on D drive thus increasing the capacity to 80GB. I use cloud backup since local backup is useless in case the hard drive dies or the laptop is lost.

3. Screen aspect ratio (16:9). I use this laptop mostly for work, not for streaming movies. I wish the screen were taller and narrower.

4. Dark finish makes fingerprints and palm prints show easily.

5. Samsung puts a Windows key between Fn and Alt (Ctrl, Fn, Windows, Alt). I use Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V for copy and paste all the time. Now Ctrl and C are four keys apart, V is even farther. I would have put the Windows key on the outside if included at all.

Conclusion: An exquisite machine with a few flaws I can live with.

Summary: love, love, love this laptop. My only regret is that I didn't it when I was traveling the globe 80% of the time.

It's a perfect fit for my style and hands. Others seem to struggle with the touch pad, but I don't have any issues. Just a few minutes and I had the feel for it. Very intuitive for me. I chose the 15" due to spreadsheet work. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been necessary. Maybe the bit more space is why it feels so good to me. Every other laptop I've used I wound up with an external mouse. Not needed for me with the Series 9. Excellent battery life and connectivity. Very fast boot and wake time. Super light, but doesn't feel fragile. Plus...it really does look smart and understated.

What would make it a 10?

larger solid state drive

normal size HDMI and LAN adapters, but I truly don't know where they'd fit. I've used it 2 weeks now and haven't needed either.

HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Notebook (2.40 GHz Intel Core i3-2370M, 4 GB Reviews

HP ProBook 4540s 15.6' Notebook
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I bought this laptop after seeing the specs on a different website. Those CORRECT specs include an i3-3110M CPU, Windows 7 Pro installed w/ Windows 8 disks included, 500GB hard drive. The specs listed in the title of this laptop are HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Notebook (2.40 GHz Intel Core i3-2370M, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW SuperMulti Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium.

Basically, the OS is an upgrade, the CPU is an upgrade, the hard drive is an upgrade. I thought you should know if you are looking at the machine. Could be a problem if you are trying to buy an exact replacement for some purpose in an enterprise environment, etc. Otherwise its just getting more than what you paid for.

I really love my new HP Probook. I would advise, however, that one sticks to Windows 7, not Win 8. This computer is very quick and has plenty of memory. Great buy.

Best Deals for HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Notebook (2.40 GHz Intel Core i3-2370M, 4 GB

This is my first Windows 8 machine. Windows 8 seems to be all about "apps", which I have no interest in. Initially, the Windows 8 startup screen (apps in your face) was a pain in the neck, but I quickly learned to go quickly to the desktop. I do, however, appreciate the very rapid startup and shut down of Windows 8.

The keyboard has a nice crisp feel, which is a real plus since I do a lot of typing.

The reason I gave four stars instead of five is because the touch pad isn't great. I've only owned two laptops prior to this one, so I don't have a lot to compare to. Perhaps touch pads are generally lousy. But, in any event, I've have a lot of trouble controlling the position of the "mouse pointer" with the touch pad. Bought a USB mouse, so this is no longer an issue when I'm working at a desk. When I'm traveling and don't have a hard surface available for the mouse, I just have to put up with the touch pad.

I ordered this item because the description specifically said WINDOWS 7

It arrived 3 hours ago and the box contained a disk for Windows 8 and

instructions for Windows 8

Never unpacked the rest

Just got back from shipping it back via UPS

The service was great as it arrived in 2 days

I am now wondering if Windows 7 was loaded and the disks for 8 were for an update if desired

as I see some HPs are advertised as such.

If that was the situation it should have said so in the accompanying billing list and on site description

But I didn't want to mess around with the unit so I never opened it

Fast, longish battery life, feels very robust, runs quiet, all the ports I need, and useful utility software for hotkeys and so forth.

I wish it had the large, smooth touchpad of my macbook pro, but the fantastic keyboard feel almost makes up for it.

Main downside is the huge power brick needed to run its monster processor. If you get a dock, be sure to get the compatible 170W model.

I have had several Lenovo computers over the years and they have always performed well and this one is no exception. It's fast, battery life is very good, and the screen looks great. The power supply is a brick, but I got a nice backpack for the computer and there is plenty of room for it. I have used 2 of these W520's with no problems at all. Get one with a warranty and you should be fine.

This laptop is an absolute disaster. It shuts down intermittently during both normal operation and sleep mode.

Search for "lenovo w520 shutdown"

Search for "lenovo w520 lawsuit"

I have returned it to the depot 4 times with no resolution. Every time I call, I point out that this is a known issue with 140 *pages* of postings on the Lenovo support website thread (search for "lenovo w520 shutdown", it will be the first result).

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad W520 427638U 15.6" LED Notebook - Core i7 i7-2720QM

I researched my options for fast reliable workstations long and hard. I work overseas and need a reliable and powerful machine. On paper the W520 seems like the best bet, and I have had great success with Thinkpad's in the past, however this is not the case with the w520.

The first week it performed flawlessly, on day 8 it would not turn on. I had powered it down for the night and in the morning it was just dead. I checked all usual suspects and contacted Lenovo. Came to the conclusion after long troubleshooting session over the phone with someone I could not even understand that the motherboard was most likely fried, and they have had the same issue before. They shipped the return box promptly free of charge with preprinted labels (a+ for effort) after a few weeks in the shop I got the laptop back supposedly fixed with mother board replacement and a few other things. No more than 3 days later the same thing, wouldn't turn on, no bios screen, nothing. called Lenovo again and they tried to say it's just a glitch and had static built up, and it was no big deal, they had my take it apart and disconnect internal battery. still didn't fix the issue. so I go through the whole process again. and Again get the repair order saying yet another motherboard is fried.

So for a laptop that claims superior quality and reliability this has hit as far from the mark as possible! I am now overseas for 4 months using my old laptop b/c there's no way I can trust the w520. In less than a month's time it has completely failed. So now it has become my wife's laptop until it needs to be fixed again at which point I will have to cut my loses and get them to take it back or throw it in the dumpster.

I had a huge love for the IBM Thinkpads, and after this I have no faith in Lenovo

Toshiba 14" Satellite Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor Reviews

Toshiba 14' Satellite Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / Blu-ray ROM / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - Platinum
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I purchased this model in September 2011 from a big box store.

Pros: It is pretty

The sound is excellent

The i5 processor is okay

Battery life okay about 3-4 hours

Nice size

Cons: Extremely sensitive touchpad that needs to be disabled in order to input text more than 2 words

From the beginning, I've had issues with the keyboard, especially Left shift key to get upper case text; this has deteriorated and finally in early May, the keyboard just plain died. Since May 10th I've been trying to get it repaired -with 1.5 years left on my warranty.

Sadly, I've discovered that Toshiba's customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. I had to pay $25.00 and wait for a shipping carton to send the laptop to the Kentucky service center. Even though I still had the orginal packaging and could have used that to return it, it would have been worth it, but....

I sent them "my" laptop with access to my software and files (backed up, thankfully) and a dead keyboard.

2 weeks after my original contact, I received back the same chassis with cleared hard drive filled with factory-loaded software and a dead keyboard.

Before I turned it on, I read the paperwork which said there was no problem with the hardware, that there was a software corruption. It did not say what software. When I called to question this, I was told that the problem was with MS Windows7 HP and they had done a clean install. (ie so I didn't need to worry about any of my personal software.)

So, I hung up and plugged it in and turned it on. The Windows screens came up for me to enter my name and laptop's name. But since keyboard still didn't work, I was unable to even put in my first name.

It took me 4 phone calls to obtain email paperwork to return my 305 for another visit to Kentucky. Since it is a holiday weekend, the soonest I will be able to have it go to UPS will be Tuesday, May 29th... Fortunately, I have a netbook (a Toshiba BN205 that has been great and the reason I shopped Toshiba for the Satellite) so I am not totally wiped out of the cyberworld but I really need the larger format for work.

I am so disappointed; this isn't the Toshiba from years past. I paid almost $900 for this laptop on sale. In my online research this past week, I found that other buyers have had keyboard, touch pad, and especially shift key issues over time.

8/6/12 update: In fairness to Toshiba, I felt like I should update my review:

Almost 6 weeks after I originally sent my laptop in, I finally received it back from Toshiba repair service. The motherboard and keyboard were replaced and the laptop is now working perfectly. While I was waiting, because the netbook was not adequate to handle my workload for so long a time, I ended up buying a Lenovo 570 and have been extremely happy with that. So the Toshiba is now available for sale.....Hopefully the buyer will have no further problems, because I would not wish dealing with the Toshiba customer services on anyone.

Apple MacBook Pro MB766LL/A 17-Inch Laptop

This is a review of the Apple Macbook Pro model MB766LL/A.

I've been shopping for a notebook for quite some time. There really is a lot of junk out there. Having used a Powerbook G4 and the first version of the Macbook Pro, I began to look into purchasing a Windows based notebook for Visual Studio development.

I tried the HP dv7t, a Dell XPS m1530 and a Sony FW390. The Sony was quite nice but Sony support tends to be a bit lacking. Sony also would not guarantee support for the upcoming Windows 7!

In spite of the negatives that I found with these products, my final decision to stay with the Apple line was due to the superior hardware that I was always aware of anyway. The multi-touch trackpad, the back-lit keyboard, bright 17" 1920x1200 LED panel, superior fit and finish, etc. All this and more just adds up to one superior product. And I have not even addressed the advantages of OSX Leopard and the upcoming Snow Leopard.

I briefly considered a Unibody MBP, but the price discount of roughly $1,000.00 for this unit and the awful glassy screens on the new ones made the choice very easy for me.

Oh, and I like a button on my trackpad too!

I could never push this beast too far. I run graphics and media programs simultaneously and have had no problem. Amazing performance with multiple high-end creative software apps running. Aluminum case is sleek looking and durable. Love the super sharp 17 inch screen. I use it to watch movies and the sound is awesome. Typically great Mac connectivity and ease of use. Thin and light. Perfect for business and personal.

This item came to me super fast, I was a bit worried because this was my first major purchase through amazon but it worked out better than expected. The laptop works great and I'm glad I ordered it.

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook Pro MB766LL/A 17-Inch Laptop (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2

I didn't buy this laptop from Amazon, but from Apple. Mine is 2.6 Ghz core 2 duo rather than 2.5, but it is the same laptop in every other way. I stumbled upon this and felt compelled to pay my respects.

I've been using this laptop solidly for 5 years, and it shows no signs of slowing down. It supports all the latest software and runs it well. OS X Mavericks even works on it, and the next OS probably will as well.

Comparing this previous gen MBP to some other brand New PC laptops leaves you with the impression that it's STILL more luxurious, even now. The trackpad, while smaller than brand new MacBooks, is unparalleled in the PC world.

The 17" display was so far ahead of its time, even today you're not likely to find a 22 or 24 inch display that matches the 1920x1200 resolution. This thing was the closest thing to "retina" before "retina" was a thing. And the availability of matte screens is a rare luxury these days and missed.

Once you put an SSD in this thing it's competitive with most entry level new MacBooks on most actual use metrics. This beast came with the larger L2 cache and other higher end underpinnings, so it's stood the test of time extremely well. It's 8600m gt video card was a BEAST when it was released, and remains more powerful than some entry level MacBooks because it's a discrete GPU rather than some chipset. It can also support 6 Gb (Not 4 like Apple says) of ram. 1x4 Gb stick and 1x 2Gb stick.

It's also possible to create a "Fusion Drive" (Which debuted with OSX Mountain Lion) which is a system level SSD HDD drive fusion by switching out the superdrive for a hard drive caddy so you can have SSD speed and HDD large capacity and not worry what goes where.

All in all, this absolute BEAST of a portable workstation is a bygone from an era where Apple made 17" Laptops. They no longer carry any MacBooks in 17 inches, and that's a shame. It really is nice having FULL productivity when mobile.

Long live 17" MBP.
