I bought this computer from Sony brand new less then 30 days ago.

I could not wait for it get to my doorstep!

It's a beautiful looking computer ( if you like pink ).

Raised and lightened keyboard.

Wireless turn off / on.

Comes with Windows 7 64 bit and windows home premium.

It's light and easy to carry.

It has had one consistent problem that I cannot over come and therefore I am returning it.

As much as I don't want to.

The problem is the mouse freezes then the entire computer freezes.

The only way to fix the problem is to turn the entire computer off.

You lose everything that you were working on.

I have tried everything I can to fix it, but nothing helps.

Sony support cannot seem fix it.

Speaking of Sony support it's bad really bad.

You cannot understand them, they cannot understand you.

They don't really care if they help you or not.

My computer get's returned tomorrow.

Even though it is an old computer (made in 2002) it is great for someone who is new to computers

-pros:

Windows Xp Pro

Wifi enabled

faster than some modern day computers

-Cons:

A bit heavy about 8 pounds

Original dosn't come with DVD drive only cd

So overall it would be great gift for someone who would want a decent laptop, just for web, and emails

It was a great computer, real fast and powerful, plus it has DVD. But I stumbled over the power chord and it fell off my coffee table. I took it apart to see if I could fix it the operation was a failure. RIP.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop (Intel Pentium 4 CPU, Blue and Silver)

My family bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 for my sister in 2003 (a decade ago), and made sure to get the best available at the time: 2.6Ghz CPU, 32MB video, 512MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, Windows XP. She loved it. She completed her Master's degree on it, took it everywhere when traveling, and even named it. But then, five years ago, she set it aside (out of necessity) for a newer Mac laptop. The Inspiron was slowing down, making a terrible rattling noise, and overheating to the point of shutting down.

So, with her blessing, I decided to clean it up and see what I could do to get it back up to speed. I upgraded the HD to 100GB, upgraded the RAM to 2x1GB (2GB total, requires a two-step BIOS upgrade), and replaced the monitor and hood. I also added an internal wireless card and a 2-USB slim PCI express card, replaced the fan and heat sink (and thermal grease), and super-glued a fine mesh screen (normally added to case fans) to the fan intake on the underside of the laptop to prevent further dust accumulation on the heat grill and CPU fan. As an added touch, I replaced the DVD drive with a second HD, and installed a temperature monitoring program, which keeps the CPU below 100F by adjusting the CPU fan speed accordingly.

All in all...? $150-$200 tops over 2 years, and it still runs like new. It's been my traveling laptop, my emergency computer when the main one goes kaput, and is the ONLY computer in the family which is still going strong after a full decade of technological updates, advances, and changes.

I love my Dell Inspiron 5100, and will keep it even after I get a new one. Excluding the fan issue, this has been a excellent laptop.

The HP Pavilion dm3 1130us (AMD CPU & ATI GPU model) is a good compromise between the portability of a netbook and the functionality of a full sized laptop. Technically in the "Ultra-portable/Thin & Light" category, I would say it is a netbook on steroids. I was looking for a portable computing solution but didn't want a small keyboard or a hard-to-read/small screen. It had to have a small form factor, yet have a more powerful processor and graphics than traditional netbooks. I use it mainly for office work, web surfing, video streaming, music listening and light gaming.

Most of the specs are readily available on Amazon, but you can get a more in-depth overview by going to HP's site and looking up the dm3z line in their Ultra-Portable category. The 1130 is essentially a later production run of the 1030, which is still available on Amazon as of this writing.

Back to what I was looking for;

Basically, I wanted a MacBook but only had about five hundred bucks to spend. I'm a Mac user normally but could not see paying so much for a laptop. I searched high & low and weighed several other options. In this laptop segment and at this price point, it is all about compromise and what you want as an end user. In this end, the 1130us was the best fit for me. I was able to find it on sale for under five hundred on the OfficeMax site and then found a dollar rebate. I used that saving to buy a , and so far that is working perfectly too. I was a little leery about getting an HP since they don't have the best reliability reputation, but I would expect more problem reports from a company that sells so many computers. My mother-in-law has a 3 year old Pavilion that still runs like new.

What I like about it:

1. It's fast, faster than I expected. Initial set-up was a snap. The 1.6GHz AMD Athon Neo X2 dual-core processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics see to that. Perhaps not the best combo for intense Photoshop sessions or cutting edge 3D gaming, but I have several apps and browser windows open at once with no system slowdowns. Online video from various sources streams just fine and I've played a number of games (including Star Wars Battlefront) with no issues. The AMD cpu and ATI gpu combo uses more wattage than the Intel option, but I think you would sacrifice computing power for battery life if you went the Pentium or Core Duo route.

1b. 7200 RPM 320GB Hard Drive. Did I say it was fast? And spacious.

2. The screen. It is glossy, but not as bad as some and it is nice and bright. 13.3" w/ a 1366x768 widescreen resolution means things are a bit smaller than on a standard desktop monitor, but everything is nice and crisp and the colors are good. It seems much bigger. HD content looks great on it and the viewing angle isn't bad. I had a stuck pixel, but it went away. The lid opens about 135 degrees back so you can easily work with it on your lap. It has a nice firm hinge so there are no worries of it falling one way or the other.

3. Wi-Fi draft N. I've only had fast and excellent connectivity so far. Having bluetooth is nice too, but I've yet to use it.

4. Windows 7, not a cobbled Started Edition. Coming from OSX, I have to say I'm growing more and more impressed with the latest Windows OS. It seems to have more intricacies than with OSX, but I'm getting used to it and have to say the user interface is top notch. Before this, I've used XP and am so glad that Microsoft has finally refined their product. Connect a device for the first time and either the drivers are already there or they download automatically. Nice. Lots of eye candy too.

5. Touch pad. Some reviewers pan it, but I find it works well for me after a slight learning curve. Sure, it is the only fingerprint magnet on an otherwise lovely case, but I like the feel of the shiny chrome finish and find the multi-finger gestures useful. The "mouse-buttons" could be a little easier to depress, but that is a small quibble, just tap the pad. It is also very customizable to your specific needs. The 1030us touch pad had some wake-from-sleep issues, but that was fixed in the latest BIOS. I also use a but have no problems adjusting to the touch pad if I leave mouse at the office.

6. 4 USB, 5-in1 card reader, 1 VGA, and 1 HDMI port. Connectivity ahoy!

7. Full sized keyboard. It took a little adjustment, but I like the quiet, island style keys. When in the proper position, I can type just as fast as with my desktop's keyboard. I measured it, and it is slightly LARGER than my G5's primary keyboard area!

8. The case. This is one sturdy feeling case with little or no flex that I can detect. You can hold it by a corner without fear. I love that it isn't a finger print magnet like so many others out there. The brushed aluminum finish is very attractive and gives it a high-end appearance.

9. It came with 4GB DDR2 ram, expandable to 8GB. With the 64bit OS, I could do this, but see no need to at the present time.

10. Cool. Even after all day use the air blowing out of the rear side exhaust vent is only slightly warm. The front wrist rests can get a little warm, but never uncomfortable (at least to me).

11. Quiet. If a completely silent room you can hear the faint breath of the fan, but otherwise it and the spinning hard drive are unnoticeable.

12. Well packaged. There are no disks included, but the manual and documentation are pretty clear.

13. Price. Find this on sale and you've got yourself one heck of a deal!

What's not so great about it:

1. It is about 13" wide and weights about nearly 5 pounds with the battery inserted. For me that's no big deal but if you plan to lug your laptop around a lot, you may want to look at something smaller and lighter. It is only one inch thick so it slides easily into most bags.

2. Speakers. You know going in that they won't be that great, but I still couldn't help being a little disappointed. However, I tweaked the sound settings and get decent output now, though not very loud. It does the job though. Use earphones. I connected it to my speakers with a subwoofer and Pandora radio sounds terrific!

3. Battery life. I get about 4 hours of constant general use life out of it. Another reviewer stated he was able to play the entire Fellowship of the Ring movie before it went into hibernation, but I have not tested that. The good news is that 4 hours is still decent, and the power cord isn't too cumbersome. If you need an all-day, cord-free laptop/netbook, look elsewhere.

4. Some bloatware. Being new to Windows I researched what to do when you first get a computer. One of the most common recommendations is to remove the manufacturer installed software. I got rid of the MS Office trial and Norton. I'll still playing around with the suite of HP software. I may keep some, but will probably ditch a good bit of it. However, some users may like the included software. Even with it, the 1130us is a speedy customer.

5. No optical drive, but I knew that and won't need one every day. The Samsung will also be useful for my other computers.

6. No OS restore disk. I know, there is no optical drive and there is a recovery partition, but it still would have been nice.

7. Possible fit and finish issues. I just noticed a very slight gap along the top right front edge where the wrist wrest meets the side paneling. Pressing down on it does reveal a little flex. Not enough to return it, but it is worth keeping an eye on and could be cause for concern. It is too early to tell. (see my product photos)

I have not used the Quickweb feature, but Windows 7 boots up (after some re-configuration) in less than a minute so I'm not sure I'd need it. I've also not yet used the HDMI out port or webcam. I plan to test both soon and have heard that the webcam is good in low light. I've only been using the 1130us for a little over a week so I can't speak to its long-term reliability, but so far so good. I'll post an update if I have anything new to add.

So, is the dm3 1130us the right model for you? If you are not a 3D gamer and want a nice looking, sturdy, portable laptop without most of the limitations of a netbook, then the answer could be "yes". Of course, technology is changing rapidly and in a few months the next latest and greatest will be out. But if you need something now, and want a lot of oomph at a great value, then the dm3 1130us could be your best bet. It exceeds my expectations at a price point other laptops couldn't match, so that is why I'm giving it 5 (4 1/2 actually) stars.

UPDATE-March 30, 2011: It is over a year later and I'm still loving this little machine. No major issues. Yes, the left palm rest can get a bit warm, but I've never had it become uncomfortably so. It still does everything I need it to with little fuss.

UPDATE-June 09, 2011: The DM3-1130US is still going strong. My wife has taken over this computer when it's at home. During they day it gets put through it's paces playing Pandora with other web-related activities. Word processing too. At night she often likes to bring it to bed to watch videos on YouTube and catch up on email. She sometimes is frustrated with the trackpad, but that's about it.

No more MacBook Pro envy for me!!!I love computers and have owned many laptops over the years, everything from Mac PowerBooks to Dell Mini's. I thought for a long time about buying a new MacBook Pro. I loved the size (13 inch model)and the brushed silver look and many of the apps. What I DID not like was the price and the fact that I could not use Office OneNote(as a teacher and a mother, this is one app I truly cannot live without!!) on the Mac without having to purchase Windows 7 and Parallels. Did some playing around in computer stores with both the Mac and other computers and fell upon this HP dm3. Loved it from the first touch. It is solidly built, beautiful to look at, light-weight, and perhaps most important to me, FAST!! I do not play computer games but do a lot of web surfing, watch streaming video, and use lots of photo and movie apps. This little guy is just as fast as my big and much more expensive desktop replacement, and simply blows my Dell Mini right out of the water. Not even in the same league!

If I could give this more stars, I would...this is a fast, sleek 13-inch (just the right size) computer that is every bit as pretty as the MacBook Pro. I am not a big fan of touchpads; I always use a mouse. That being said, I actually love this one!

I would be remiss not to mention that the service at Amazon is absolutely second-to-none. I had originally ordered an Asus 13 inch but changed my mind after reading some comments about the wireless abilities (plus, it kind of freaked me out buying someting that I had never actually touched.)Having played with this one at the store was really the deal-maker for me. They have the finest customer service on this planet, and I would never buy my computers from anywhere else. Also worth mentioning...bought the SquareTrade 3-year warranty that includes spills, etc. I had an old MacBook(6 years old)that I had a SquareTrade warranty on. It died one day, I mailed it in, and had my complete purchase price in my bank account within a week. Very much worth the money! P.S. This is the only review I have ever written although I have been a loyal Amazon fan for years. Guess that shows how much I really do love this machine!!

Best Deals for HP Pavilion DM3-1130US 13.3-Inch Laptop (Silver)

I got the DM3-1130 (the AMD processor) in early February, after an extensive search to replace my HP Pavilion dv5000. I had considered ASUS and Macbooks, in particular, as I wanted something in the 13-inch range, lightweight and with a good track record.

This model has more memory than the slightly more expensive ASUS model of this size, and Macbooks, while perennially getting great reviews, cost hundreds more. I use this for personal use and for some business use (Internet, writing, some photo editing), so a Macbook wasn't worth it. Sorry, Justin Long.

After my brief time with my new HP, here are the pros and cons, for anyone considering it:

Pros:

1) It truly is a lightweight, portable model

2) The style is hard to beat, if you like the metal look

3) The keyboard style is different than what I'm used to, but I've found the chiclet style very use to type with

4) HP Quickweb is a useful, practical feature to get you on the Internet/listening to music or looking at photos without accessing Windows 7

5) Windows 7 itself rivals Apple's platform in the litany of user-friendly features and style. I was very impressed.

6) The battery life is about what was advertisedprobably in the 4 hour range, if you're using wireless and looking at photos, etc. People who are only getting two hours probably are watching a movie and/or didn't let the battery fully drain the first time before they charged it.

7) The four USB ports, the SD slot and the exhaust fan on the side are all nice features.

8) I haven't had any problems with the mousepadpeople who have commented negatively on it, I would guess, want the world's perfect mousepad. It's functional. And sure, it gets fingerprints on it, but that's because you use your fingers to use it. What do you expect? And are you trying to impress people with your fingerprint-less mousepad?

9) I was installing multiple programs and browsing the Internet all at once and experienced no interruptions or slow down. At least in that test, the RAM and processor are keeping up. I went with the AMD instead of Intel partly for cost (much cheaper), but also because I was told by some computer experts AMD might work a little faster. No regrets yet.

Cons:

1) The left palm area gets hotter than you'd like.

2) I had a problem after registering/setting up my laptop. After installing a few programs I needed to restart. When I got to the log-on screen and entered the password I had selected during startup when I created an account, Windows kept telling me I was incorrect, although I was sure (and the password hint verified) that I was right. HP tech service said that sometimes happens when an administrator password is selected during start-up, and had me restore my system. It worked (I just didn't enter a password during setting up screen), although I had to reinstall stuff I had already installed before, as you'd expect. Lost some time, but not a huge deal. You'd think it could have been avoided with a simple "Set up a user password later", as I'm sure I'm not the only person that's happened to. That's more of Windows' fault than HP's. At the least, HP tech service was helpful.

3) No optical drive, which you need to make a recovery disk at some point. I'll have to borrow one. Since most software is downloaded these days, I won't otherwise need it. It's something you have to give up if you want an ultraportable model, in most cases.

4) HP offers a $50 rebate for this model, but it's not valid if you buy it off of Amazon. I knew that ahead of timestill went with Amazon because it was cheaper than factory direct, but that's a bummer.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DM3-1130US 13.3-Inch Laptop (Silver)

Pros:

I was looking at netbooks, but found them too small. This is a perfect size for the coffee table, and looks very slick with the brushed aluminum. I has a really nice screen, and a great keyboard, with the play/pause/volume buttons you need for music playback on the top row. The HDMI out and 4 USB ports are a plus too.

Cons:

I haven't had any problems with with plastic trim coming apart, as one reviewer did. The only design flaw that I see is the rubber pieces that prevent the screen bezel from touching the keyboard bezel when the lid is closed are a little too small or shallow, so the screen bezel does get some very slight scratches. I think this can be minimized by not putting anything too heavy on top of the computer when closed, and not squeezing it too tight when carrying it. But that's a minor problem. Also, the computer does get a little warm (esp. under the left palm, probably where the CPU is), perhaps too warm for extended use on one's lap, but it's super quiet -a trade-off I can live with.

Bottom Line:

This is a great little laptop for the money. I highly recommend it.

I recieved this laptop yesterday (2/5/10)and here is my review: When I removed the laptop from the box and held it, I was impressed with the laptop's construction. The keyboard is big enough for my hands, and the 13.3 inch screen is large enough for me to see. The laptop is not too heavy--but it is not too light. Unlike a netbook, this laptop has 320gb of hardrive and 4gb of rams, expandable to 8gb (that's very powerful for this little machine!). It has four usb ports and a hdmi port for hooking it up to a big screen TV. It also has a webcam camera and an internal microphone. The laptop is loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium for stability and a lot of HP software junk. The laptop has Bluetooth technology to communicate with other Bluetooth devices. The laptop doesn't have a fixed optical drive, which is cool since most software can be downloaded from the Internet. In closing, if you need a smaller laptop for just basic computing, a netbook will suffice. However, I would STRONGLY recommend you to spend more money on a laptop like the HP Pavilion DM3-1130US model, because sooner or later you will need a smaller laptop like this one for heavy duty computing.

I picked this box up for my inlaws to replace an aging desktop setup they had. I wasn't expecting much, but to be honest, I'm starting to think hard about picking one of these up for myself.

It's dead silent, even under load, and the battery lasts far, far longer than the "2hours 30minutes" that it displayed for four hours off power. Built in webcam is sharp and follows motion well and the screen is bright and sharp as well. The multi-touch touch pad takes a bit to get used to, but it's not a problem.

A few things that are a bit annoying:

* All the ports are on the sides of the laptop, meaning that you'll have lots of wires sticking out.

* Make sure to disable the "fancy startup" program, since it overrides things like selected backgrounds and menubar setups.

* the slick cover is a fingerprint magnet.

Those issues aside, it's very light and nicely responsive.

I love, love my ASUS Laptop. I have not experienced any issues with my laptop so I do not know about ASUS customer service. I use a Dell for work and this laptop is loaded with a more responsive keyboard. The touch pad takes some getting used to but the laptop comes with an optical mouse and laptop carrying case. I loaded all of my performance software and purchased Norton 360 which has not slowed the function and speed of my laptop. I has everything that those name brand laptops have but cost $200 less. I paid less than what Amazon is selling this laptop for now. This laptop comes with a 2 year global warranty and 1 year accidental damage which is a $350 value. Best Buy does not honor the 2 year global warranty so do not buy your ASUS there. I recommend this laptop or you can just pay more for that other stuff.

My mom bought this laptop for me as a gift when I entered college. I wish we had taken the time to look at any laptop than this K501J.

Within 3 months, the hardrive crashed for the first time, wiping out everything I had saved with confidence to my laptop's hardrive. Luckily, this was within the warranty, and they had the product fixed within 2 weeks, During that time, I was rushing around to friends houses and the library in order to have access to a computer.

The second time, it lasted another 6 months before the hardrive crashed yet again. In that time, it was prone to glitching, closing programs randomly, and freezing when I tried to open applications. Still under warranty, the hardrive was replaced.

I was getting my confidence back after another six months when the hardrive went bad FOR THE THIRD TIME. This time around, I had been backing everything up on flashdrives. Good thing I decided it would be a good investment to buy an extended warranty at the place I bought the laptop.

I will give Asus credit to having a computer that runs smoothly and easy to navigate WHEN THE HARDRIVES ARE NOT BEING EATEN BY THE COMPUTER. I don't know if there is poor workmanship on the hardrives, or on the computer itself, but I have never seen a laptop crash so much in this span of time. I would think twice before buying this laptop.

Asus is priced well, but they seem to break after warranty. On this one, the sound has died. Is it the sound card? Since Asus does not have real support, who can know.

3 laptops and all have had problems.

I bought my asus back in 2009. Its been the best computer ever. Dont believe those horrible reviews from people. The battery lost me all day with the settings at maxiumum power. The asus has been fantastic. I am very sad because I caught my cat laying on the monitor. I turned it on and the pic is messed up. Shes a big cat. I found that asus has cheap replacement parts too.If i could reccomend this laptop to people I would. I would defend the asus name. I have had a lot of laptops and its been the BEST

We bought this for our 13 year old daughter for Christmas. The seller was great to work with. The original one was delivered with a broken screen. It looked like fedex dropped it the corner of the box was smooshed in where the screen was broken and of coarse like all shippers coming to our address they leave it on the doorstep and don't even ring the doorbell so we couldn't really dispute the damage. He replaced it and reimbursed us for the return shipping. Works well but she broke an arrow key after about 2 days. Im sure that was her fault. Other than that it works about the same as any other laptop i've used. It doesnt overheat even when she is playing sims and she has it stuffed full of programs already and it hasn't seemed to slow down any.

I just bought this computer about three weeks ago. Love the screen, bluray player is beautiful, super fast. I upgraded it to 4gb of ram but it was fast without it. I bought it for design work. Runs the entire Adobe CS3 Suite super fast.

Cons: Took me two days to uninstall all of the trial and other junk software installed by Sony. Battery life is horrible. I bought another power supply so I have one at work and one at home. The minute I unplug the thing from the wall it says 91% battery life remaining. ??? I have never seen such horrible battery life. I got used to my old Gateway that gave me 4 hours of battery life. I'm lucky if I get an hour just browsing the internet. This above all is the only thing that is bad about this machine. If the battery were better I would give it five stars.

I purchased a computer and it arrived. Taking the machine out of the box, I was very pleased with the look and feel and design of the computer itself. However, after the computer booted up, I realized just how unusable this product was out of the box. The machine comes with more trialware installed than any reasonable person should have to put up with. The software was so overrun with trialware that the machine crawled after booting up. All of the trialware started popping up dialogs asking me to update my software and and asking me to purchase full versions. The computer was utterly useless. I had to format the computer and put a clean version of Windows Vista on the box. However, this machine doesn't come with ANY disk -not even a recovery disk. If you want a recovery disk, you have to pay for it. The downside to that is, even if you had a recovery disk, you'd still end up installing all of the trialware again.

Sony did a great job with the computer, but their execution on the full user experience makes me rate this computer poorly. Had Sony at least given me the ability to completely wipe the computer to a clean Vista install, I would have rated it a 2. Had they simply supplied installation CDs for the trialware and shipped the clean machine without anything pre-installed, I would have given this computer a 4 our of 5. Thanks for listening.

I was nervous about buying a new computer with Windows Vista, but, this computer is sweet! It is fast and has improved my ability to communicate with my office significantly. Other than a blip with one program, which I was able to fix with an upgrade to the program, Vista has worked fine.

The computer itself is thin, lightweight, and a great performer. I was able to watch feeds from Live Earth this past weekend -it was able to keep up and give me a very decent screen to watch. I look forward to taking it on the road and viewing DVDs. The touchpad mouse is an improvement from my last laptop as it is not quite as smooth and responds better to my movement. To-date the battery life has been better than my previous model as well.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VGN-FZ180U/B 15.4" Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ180E/B 15.4" Notebook PC (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7300, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, Vista Home Premium)

I own a 1st generation Powerbook Aluminum. And while I love my PB it is getting quite 'long in the tooth'. I was shopping for a replacement, and the new MacBooks start at $1999.00. A bit pricey. So I started looking at Windows laptops. The VAIO, by far, offers the best feature set, for the amount of money spent. Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 2GH processor, 2GB ram, 200GB HD, and a Blu-Ray disc burner for under $1400!!

The machine is very peppy. The xbrite display is jaw dropping gorgeous! Very bright, colors seem vibrant, warm.

Setup was a breeze, and Vista practically connected itself, to my wireless network.

The laptop is very robust. I have had several programs open at once, including a desktop workspace manager application, for managing multiple desktops, and I did not experience any performance issues.

If there is a 'downside' to this laptop, it is that Sony loads it with so much bloatware, adware, trialware, none of which in my opinion adds any value to the machine. Boot-up time, out of the box, was a bit slow, but was noticeably faster, and quite acceptable, once I eliminated non-essential programs, from startup.

Simply put, build/finish is very nice, solid feel, robust management of multiple applications with little degradation in performance, inclusion of Blu-Ray burner sealed the deal, as the features provided, are well worth the money that was spent. A good value!

I agree with a lot of people on how much junk Sony preloads on this computer. I have removed a lot of it, but there is still more to go.. I've been using this computer about 1 month and have had NO problems.. Definitely worth what I paid for it!

We were in the market for a new Kitchen/Kids Laptop and wanted to get the best Laptop we could in the $500 price range. We plan to use this Laptop primarily for basic web browsing, home network access, some Excel and Word use and the kids will be using it to play on the web on various kid web sites. We don't need any super memory or processing power for Photoshop or anything like that. We have had a lot of luck over the years with HP PCs and Laptops. I have owned an HP Elite Desktop for a few years and this will be our third HP Laptop, all of which are still running great. We did a preliminary look and found that HP offered the features we were looking for in this price range so we settled on that brand and started researching.

I did a lot of research comparing all of the HP Laptops in the $400-$600 price range available at the time on Amazon and this one had the fastest processor. I found that all of the HP Envy Laptops and some of the Pavilions had AMD chips in them. I compared this i3-3110M to those specific processors on some benchmark sites on the web, and this chip came in faster in every instance. The price was around $508 when I first started watching it. I put a camelcamelcamel dot com price tracker alert on it and snatched it up when it dropped to the all time low price for this model of $449. A great deal in this price range for the fastest processor and other included features.

First Impression It is a nice looking Laptop. The trackpad has a rough texture which is different, but fine. The screen looks really nice. It has a full keyboard with a number pad which is great. It is only a couple of inches wider than our old 14" Laptop. The dimensions in the Amazon Technical Details section are misleading because they are way too big. I am guessing those are the dimensions of the shipping box. The Laptop is only about 15" wide.

Initial Setup Setup took a little while. Mostly basic questions that you would expect from any Windows installation. It easily connected to my Wireless N Router the first try. It did ask you to set up a Microsoft account so that you can download apps from the store which I did. Once in, I had no problem connecting to the shared drives on my Network. One of the easiest initial setups you could ask for.

Software Installation I immediately loaded a bunch of software on the machine. I installed Google Chrome, Dropbox App, Dropbox Software (yes, two different things), LogMeIn (for remote access), Microsoft Office 2007, tried to install Windows Security Essentials, but it comes with Windows Defender which does the same thing in Windows 8. Everything installed with no problems at all.

Performance and Web Browsing All of the software that I tried worked very well and very fast. No slowdowns to speak of. Web browsing with Chrome was great. No complaints at all about performance during my initial use.

Windows 8 I'm not going to comment much about this. I love Windows 7 and have never used Windows 8, so the first time out, it takes a bit to figure things out. I'm not sure if it is good or bad so far, but I was able to find the Desktop just fine and started getting used to the Metro UI pretty quickly. For what this machine will be used for (Kitchen and Kids access), the Metro tiles may actually work out better. It will just take some time to get used to.

In conclusion, this Laptop is great for the price. You get the fastest Intel processor in this price range, a good amount of RAM, a large hard drive, upgraded Intel HD Graphics 4000 (most in this range have the 3000 version), fast networking and overall nice performance. If you are looking for a lower priced Laptop and don't need the highest performance, you really can't go wrong with this Laptop in the $500 range. Highly Recommended!

ONE WEEK UPDATE (05/09/2013):

The Laptop is working really nicely so far. The screen looks really nice and the performance has been great.

After using Windows 8 for a little while, I did decide to install Classic Shell, which is a free program that basically brings back the Start Menu to the Windows 8 Desktop. I have used Classic Shell for years on my Windows 7 PC and it has always been great. Now that I put it on the new Windows 8 Laptop, you can barely tell it is a Windows 8 machine. It functions almost exactly like Windows 7, but you can still access the Metro UI and all the other Windows 8 functions. A much more comfortable experience in my opinion. Really a "best of both worlds" situation. Still Highly Recommended!

ONE MONTH UPDATE (06/06/2013):

Everything has been great with this Laptop so far. We have been using it daily for Web Surfing, Excel Work, Kids Games and Skype with the out-of-town Grandparents. We were told the Webcam through Skype looked really good from the other end. One complaint that I had was that it was driving me nuts that the F2 Key in Excel kept adjusting the brightness instead of editing the cell so I found a trick on the web that would switch the default on the combined Function/Action Keys by adjusting a BIOS setting [Disable Action Key Mode under the System Configuration]. Also since switching to Classic Shell, the Windows 7 like interface has been perfect and I am very happy having my Start Menu back. Overall, the performance has been great and everything is working as expected. We are very happy with this purchase.

I received this laptop yesterday after having to return the ASUS A55A-AH51 (unfortunately got a lemon). This laptop has been great so far. The set up was a no-brainer; fast and easy. I added 4GB of RAM (Kingston Value RAM KVR16S11S8/4) and I think this helped with the speed. All programs and apps are running perfectly...no problems. The internet connection was also perfect. This laptop comes with Windows 8. I'm not sure yet how I feel about it...it's different but I like the apps options. It is slightly hard to navigate but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon enough. If anything changes down the road, I'll add to the review.

Lots of apps and plenty of GB at 670. 4 GB of memory. seem to work very good for me. Not sold on windows 8 just yet. I liked visita and XP they were more easy to use.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion g6-2260us 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I got this so I could do some internet surfing, school work and some light Photoshop. So far so good. It runs Photoshop no problem and for under $500, that is hard to beat. I will probably add 4 GB of RAM in the future but for now the 4 it comes with will do fine. The screen is crisp and the keyboard is nice. I don't really like touchpads too much so will be getting a wireless mouse soon but it works fine just I don't like any of them. I would probably consider this one of the minimal specs for a laptop you would want if you would like to do Photoshop comfortably. Sure a lesser computer could probably do it, but would be pretty rough and of course a $1,000 laptop would handle it better but so far I have had no problems with it. I would recommend this laptop for sure for anyone who just wants it for the basics and even for someone who wants to do some lite gaming, for example, I have played the Sims Medieval on this with no problem at all. (probably games from before 2012 would run nice with this overall) or Photoshop or the like.

I actually want to give this laptop 4 1/2 stars, with the 1/2 star removed for combo of low rpm drive (standard on a lot of low to mid-range laptops) and casing that seems a little flimsy (I am used to sturdy Thinkpad case). Otherwise, this is a great laptop performance in both processor and graphics. I replaced the drive (I highly recommend you do this with at least a 7200 rpm hdd) with a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive so I can't speak much for the existing OS, but I did install all their add on drivers and I do like their wireless identifier at the login screen letting you know you are connected. The windows experience rated everything except my replaced hard drive with a 5.9, not bad at all for a sub-500 laptop!

As for testing, I simultaneously backed up a dvd I owned while at the same time converted a movie iso image to an mkv. While the processor maxed out encoding at 27 fps(common enough in encoding) with dvd copy at 4 MB/s the memory stayed at a reasonable level (under half of system memory). I also viewed several blu ray rips I had made from movies I own on my desktop and there was no stuttering or problem handling even the most visually stunning movie. I don't really play pc games so I can't review this, but I'm sure this can handle most 720p 1333x1768 game displays with no problem.

I should also mention I did not pay Amazon's standard price (the factor that tipped me to buying this particular laptop) but even at that price point it beats out the other i3 laptops on the market (and perhaps even some current i5s due to fusion graphics)

I bought this for my wife so hopefully she likes it as much as I do!

This is a sharp-looking, inexpensive laptop with decent CPU and GPU power for the price. It has a few glaring shortcomings though, two of which are unfortunately major.

Pros:

1. Discrete ATI video card

2. Bright screen

3. Nice looking

4. Perfectly adequate speed for any normal tasks

5. HDMI out

Neutral:

1. 720P resolution is too low for a 15" screen. Unfortunately, this is nearly the standard on lowand mid-end 15" laptops now, so Toshiba is no worse than most other manufacturers.

Cons:

1. There is no latch or magnet to hold the lid closed -you just close it and hope it stays shut. When you carry it, the lid tends to bang against the base of the laptop because there is typically a 1-2 mm gap between the lid and base due to the lack of any latching mechanism. It does not feel solid and secure at all when carrying it.

2. The screen has worst viewing angle and glare problem I have ever experienced on a laptop, hands down. Granted, my last laptop was a MacBook Pro with a gorgeous IPS screen and cost 3x as much, but I was not prepared for how poor this TFT screen would be when used in even moderately bright indoor conditions, or in just about any lighting conditions when displaying dark images.

3. No backlit keyboard. This is annoying when trying to use it in low-light conditions, but you can't call this a major flaw at this price point.

I purchased this laptop from Amazon and have had it for 2 weeks. This is a relatively new model with a new cpu and a June 2011 release date. My previous laptop was a HP DV6165 an AMD dual core running Windows XP. This laptop blows that one away in every aspect. It comes with a healthy 4 Gb of ram, which is not the max, but it runs Windows 7 very nicely. The WEI is a 5.8 and held back due to the 5400 rpm HD. I am sure with a SSD this laptop would scream. The cpu scores a 6.9 WEI. If you want to validate this, check out the CPU performance charts as a comparison. The AMD cpu in this scores right up there with Intel's I5's and B940's and literally blows away my one sons old Q6600 overclocked (passed down from dad) quad.My desktop is a Intel I-7 with a Crucial SSD hard drive. I have been running Raid arrays in my last three computers. So you can see, I do know a bit about performance. This laptop has got it. I have not tested it for games yet as my gaming rig has dual GTX460's so I probably won't be gaming on the laptop. I don't think you will be disappointed with this laptop. The software on it is not too overdone either. The case is a light gray with a block pattern in it. It is not as pretty as some but for the price it is well worth it.

Edit 9/4/11: Just finished watching a movie while ironing some clothes. Played beautifully. To the guy with the gaming problem, there is a video update on the Toshiba website. This may fix your issue. I have not seen it with mine. Minimal games but no issues thus far! I really love mine and am very happy with it. I did increase the ram to 8 Gb with a recent sale from a certain store, new egg for $35. Seems a bit snappier now but it was no slouch before it either.

I love my computer, it's awesome. It connects to the internet extremely well, it is easy to work, and it is super fast! I think that the only problem I have with it is that it's constantly downloading updates, but it is still fairly new, so that makes sense. It's very light and compact, and you can take it practically anywhere. The base doesn't get very warm either, so it won't burn you if you have it sitting on your lap. It's very functional, and everything that I've put on it works great. So if you're looking for a really nice laptop that's relatively cheap, this is the one!!

I recieved my laptop on 21 Aug from Amazon. Its a beauty, simply turned it on, set up the wi-fi and I was away laughing. The performance is fantastic as was the purchase price. I live in NZ and I have had no problems at all using my laptop here. The same item cost 4 times the price of the Amazon deal (shipping and import costs included). So this purchase represented great value.

I mostloy surf the net and do a bit of consulting on the side. This laptop is exactly right for the job. Ideal in fact. Highly recommended.

This laptop is perfect, it handles everything without any problems. there is no back-lit keyboard on this model(j020us), but if that's what you need then i don't recommend it. the screen size is perfect for watching movies/videos. Windows 8 is honestly not even as bad as people make it seem. it took me about 20 minutes to figure out everything. the only bad thing is the 5400rpm hdd, which isnt a super big deal. the laptop boots pretty quick and the battery life isn't terrible, but what do you expect out of a 17.3-inch screen with 1600x900 pixels and a beast processor. the sound on this laptop is pretty good the beats audio is alright, you can definitely hear the base. there is bluetooth on this model. its build quality is pretty nice it doesn't feel super cheap but its nowhere near Apple quality. it doesn't seem to run too hot it stays around 40-50 degrees when running most applications which is decent. browsing the web it gets around mid 30s to low 40s. I bought a 2 year warranty from Square Trade and its way better than paying for an HP warranty, so for people complaining its pointless never buy a warranty from the company that makes the product as they will take their sweet time. Overall this is a pretty good laptop that will handle just about any application you throw at it. I wouldn't recommend it for gaming as the GPU is pretty weak, so if you're a gamer on a budget I'd recommend the Lenovo y410p which has been on sale for quite some time and the specs are more gamer oriented, but it will take them forever to ship it.

Fast but great battery life for day-to-day tasks. Only gripe is the slow 5400x HDD, but I understand what I was getting from the start, so I can't complain.

We've had this notebook just a couple weeks. Setup was easy. It boots up fast, but login is disappointingly slow. It came with Windows 8 and the upgrade to 8.1 is now available for free. We haven't done the upgrade yet, but plan to do so. We understand there is an option in 8.1 to boot to the desktop and a start menu, which will resolve most of the issues we have with Windows 8.

Like another reviewer remarked, the edge of the notebook is tapered and isn't as thick as a network (RJ-45) jack. I don't find it an issue when plugging a network cable in, but it can be darn near impossible to get it out. Good thing the WiFi works great.

HP's touchpad is very "touchy", plus the buttons are integrated into the pad. We are using a mouse with it.

The size of the screen is great until you take it on the road. It's nearly impossible to use on a plane. It's heavy, although not nearly as heavy as another HP 17.3" we have that has the bigger, longer-life battery. We call that one the "aircraft carrier".

I've had mine (got a great deal on it from Office Depot, plus there is a mfg. rebate) a few weeks. I like the backward compatible USB3 ports (it has USB2 ports also -all I know is there are 4 USB ports). I like that the electrical connection is on the right side (my last HP laptop had it on the left side). It has a fingerprint reader but not sure that is a deal breaker...now that I've tried it, no; I could get by without that.

Only thing I'm not crazy about is that the screen isn't non-glare like my other HP laptop. Doesn't matter all that much...but I do have to move it around to beat the light. (It wasn't a deal breaker, either...so I went with it.) It was super easy to setup. The sound is very good. For the price I paid, I am thrilled. I don't think many more frills on it would really matter all that much. We don't rent Blu Ray movies (so the DVD/CD player is fine as-is). It has the connector needed for TV connection and it has WiFi. I don't see a card reader slot...but wouldn't know what to do with one anything. :) IF you can pick this up at $700 to $800, I believe you will be delighted with this baby. (You may see it listed as dv7-6b78us, but is same one (apparently).

I have always had very good luck with Sony equipment so I decided on a Sony notebook this time. So far after about one week I am not disappointed. This is a fast, beautiful, well-made notebook with an awesome screen. Amazon's delivery was very fast, and the product is as described. Right now I am dealing with a steep learning curve with the Windows Vista 64 bit that came with the notebook and it's compatibility issues with software and printers, but that is another story.....

Excellent and beautifully screen, I love the full keyboard and the software packages is fantastic. The start-up, customization and data transfer was easy, the start-up and support software are well design. The only minor thing I can say is the batteries are actually a haft one and last only an hour in normal setting and also there a problem with the sleep mode and the screen saver... not a big deal for me. Also to take a grate advantage of the multi-media they should add an HD TV tuner.

But after all it is fast, beautifull and I'm very happy with it.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VGN-AW230J/B 18.4-Inch Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

The backlight on the VGN-AW230J is poorly designed, resulting in an area approximately 0.5 cm high at the bottom of the panel that is evenly and significantly brighter than the rest of the panel. This same effect can be seen to a lesser extent along the sides of the panel. The opposite effect occurs at the bottom corners of the panel, where the backlight appears pinched and at times completely black.

Sony initially told me this was a defect and sent a technician to repair the laptop. After the technician replaced the LCD panel (and broke the bezel in the process), the problem remained. Sony then requested that I send the laptop to their repair center. The repair center has since notified me that the strip of light is "normal," and that despite multiple unnecessary repairs made at their suggestion, they will not provide me a with new, unmodified laptop.

Sony has also added a vaguely worded article to their knowledgebase describing the problem as normal. While they refer to the problem as a "glow," which can in fact be normal for some backlights, this is not how the problem presents itself. ®ion=UMRE_UNITEDSTATES_2_5&sonyregion=US&searchString=lcd%20bright&product=SG_VGNAW230J_1_5&sonytemplate=1&sonymodel=VGNAW230J

I was quite surprised with Sony's response given the marketing behind this particular laptop's display and their direct support of Adobe's color profiles. If you're looking for a laptop with a clear, even, and professional display, look elsewhere.

The down side is the weight, battery life and hard to find the bag but I got one from Amazon.com that is perfectly fit this laptop, it is Targus TLE400.

I have been using this laptop for about 2 weeks and haven't had any problem yet.

PROS:

This laptop is great! At first, I could not get used to the size of the screen, but that quickly grew on me. The full keyboard is absolutely a plus for me. The picture is very clear, the sound is great (not party loud though.) Recording videos and chatting through the webcam is great also. I love watching DVD's on here, downloading music, writing papers, browsing the internet, checking e-mails, etc. If you're a traveler, I would recommend purchasing the Neoprene laptop case for the AW series which was only $24.99!! I also bought the Linksys Ultra Rangeplus Wireless-N Broadband Router (the best price found on Amazon of course).

CONS:

The laptop is only 8 lbs. However, I was unaware of how heavy that actually is. Not really a downside, but it would be nicer if it were a bit lighter. The standard capacity battery that the laptop comes with has a very short life. That battery will last you just over one hour, which is not a lot of time if you're typing a paper, dl songs, or watching a movie. You can leave it plugged in, but I highly recommend purchasing the Large Capacity battery as well.

Hope this helps!!!! =)

Definitely a super deal if you bought it at Office Depot when it was on sale. Very solid, good performing laptop overall for the price. Only nuisance is the touchpad. The 2 touchpad buttons are rather hard to depress (like if you want to hold the left button down to scroll down a page) and makes it rather annoying. I may get an external mouse to get around this problem.

Overall, performs fast. The screen res is good, not excellent. Can't beat the value though!

It has been in use for a week now and has performed fast and flawlessly. What a good experience!

I have read articles from the HP web sites and blogs about the product. In the end, I think it was a common issues for this product. Everything else worked great but you would be surprise how much that right -click is used.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion G62-222US 15.6-Inch Laptop

This computer was a cheap purchase for me, a good price. But make no mistake. IT is not a value. You get what you pay for.

This computer was nothing but trouble for me since I bought it. Within a year of owning it (But of course, past the warranty!) the computer developed the "white screen" problem. Many times, but not every time, the computer would start up with a white screen. From this point it was dead. I had a techie friend fix it. So, things were fine, for about another six months. Suddenly, without warning, the white screen started again. I finally got it back up and running..for five minutes. Then, it crashed. NOw, it doesn't have the juice to power on. I had another friend look at it and he said it is likely the motherboard--more expensive repair than the crappy thing is worth. So now it is sitting, unused, in my room while I look for another computer. Again.

I did not overload the capacity of this computer. I kept almost nothing on it actually. I cleaned it off on purpose so as not to slow it down or cause problems. I used it mainly for web browsing and storing a few word/sticky/excel documents. It is just, in a word, a piece of junk.

Where do I start, I have been researching laptops for the last 6 months, looking at specs etc. I needed to replace my laptop that has become outdated. I bought a Dell 5 years ago that was just too slow to watch videos, download anything or keep up with all of the new software upgrades. I wanted a laptop with speed, good memory, decent video graphics, large enough hard drive so that I wouldn't be changing it soon. Plus I wanted an expandable computer in terms of memory so that I wouldn't be limited at a really good price.

It is a 15.6 inch, 2.3G processing speed and 4G memory, with 320 Hard drive it is fast, you can view most of the HD videos clearly they finally load for me on You Tube..lol I need one also for work at home, since I use it for a lot of number entries. This is one of the best if not the best keyboards w/10 key numeric pad. I have large fingers and it is comfortable and easy to use it is set up just like an adding machine for accountants, or bookkeepers. There is just enough texture and grip of the keys for fast and easy typing. Another thing I loved about it was the gray interior it shows less visible fingerprints and dust for those who don't like the glossy black of most Toshiba's out there.

It was easy to set up I was so worried about how long it would take. I had already had a wireless network so all I did was boot up created a password and sign on, the connected to my wireless network and I was on the net. Yes to some it might have too much bloatware(unnecessary programs) but for those who are not as computer savvy it includes all the files to get you up and running but you need to update them from time to time. The camera is so easy to use and Skype is already set up.

When I bought it was a much better deal it is bright and easy to use for night viewing, especially if you watch movies or download movies online. I have just had it for a month but as long as you have a good registry cleaner program to clean up Windows 7 it should continue to run fast. One downer is I wish Toshiba would come with the Operating System disks included it is irritating to have to copy them on your own.

Overall you cannot get most of the specs like a large comfortable full size keyboard, with a 15.6 inch TruBrite screen, webcam 1.3 pixel, 320G Hard drive, ATI graphics, labelfish for your CD/DVD, 2.3G AMD processor with 4G memory for this price you cannot compare. Plus it is lightweight easy to move from room to room. So far very happy with my purchase.

If you read the 4 and 5 star reviews you'll get a sense of what works on this computer.

But they may not mention that two things are in fact annoying.

1. The sound quality on the speakers is awful. If you want to hear music or watch a movie, you'll have to have speakers.

2. The battery life is way short. Usually about an hour and thirty minutes. Keep your plug handy.

I had been looking for a new laptop for quite some time when I came across the reviews on Amazon about this model. I had been advised by a computer-whiz son of mine to look for a Toshiba this time around, since in his opinion (he's a computer engineer) they are well-made and predominantly trouble-free. So when I found this computer, and read the reviews on its performance, I was sold. Now that I've used it for a couple of weeks, I have to agree. It's a sweet computer for the price. The keyboard is great, and since I do a lot of typing, I like how it feels. The Web-cam feature works great. And I love Windows 7 so far. The battery lasts about 2-3 hours, which is typical for a laptop. The screen resolution is great. Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5015 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver/Black)

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite L505D-ES5025 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop

First and foremost I love this laptop! It is great for the things I do every day. I use it to complete assignments and to surf the internet. I have found that though this laptop has HD sound (yes it's awesome) the system speakers do it no justice, they are low and not great quality. I plugged in my earbuds and was blown away!!! I haven't tried it with external speakers yet but I will soon. My second issue is the two USB ports. To remedy that I brought a usb hub. Overall I am loving my Toshiba Satellite L505-E5025. If you are looking for a great inexpensive system, I highly recommend this one. I have the AMD processor and it's working great for me. Consider buying antivirus software and MS office when buying this product because it only comes with trial version of Norton and MS Office 07.

The L505 was a good choice for me. In the middle of a large dissertation, I had to dump my old beloved 2004 Gateway to keep up with Microsoft's constant system upgrade demands. The Toshiba is a bit heavy for a laptop but it has a solid feel for my mostly desktop use. Mousepad functionality is spotty but I rely mainly on a mouse. It is fast and (thus far) my McAfee installs happen quickly and quietly in the background without my even noticing. My only complaint is the squat dimensions of screen. The 15.6" "Tru-bright" screen is nice and bright, but the screen ratio makes it wide and short. If you are a document writer (vice an Excel jockey or primarily an internet surfer) you are giving up a lot of good screen space for documents. The wide dimensions make for other annoyances ... the power plug and USB port (only 2) with a thumb drive inserted on the right side require that you keep your mouse-arm splayed wide-right. Why not put these ports in the back? Otherwise, for my $540, this is a great machine. I looked at Dells in the same price range and they seem cheap and plasticky in comparison. Unfortunately, we are getting to the age of disposable laptops, in which it is easier to buy a new one than to upgrade. Perhaps cheap and plasticky, low and squaty, are the wave of future.
