I researched and researched looking for the best machine I could get for my money and I could not be happier after purchasing the Toshiba C855-S5194. But........I purchased it locally at a major office supply store because their 'in store' discount coupled with the $50 rebate was a better price than here. Most of the negative reviews I'd read about *any* laptop was that Windows 8 was horrible. Well, that has nothing to do with the performance of the laptop. AND, Toshiba sends you a free e-copy of Windows 8 for Dummies (only 32 pages) so there's no excuse to say you don't know how to navigate. Memory was a huge selling point for me, there's lots of it on this machine, and it had a better processor than some of the others I was looking at. I did have to change some of the settings on the touchpad because I didn't like the defaults (i.e. to scroll you have to use TWO fingers and I'd rather use one on the side or bottom). You have to be slightly deliberate in your typing, but I'm ok with that too. And I've really been impressed with the battery life. I can work on it for up to four hours (maybe a little more). The web cam is very clear and adjusts the light accordingly. My husband and I Tango (free video chat app) and the images are good (depending on your signal). I installed Office Home Professional without any trouble. It's light for the size it is. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone in the market!

I have been shopping for a laptop for about a month now and almost went for another HP but decided to try a Toshiba instead and so far I am completely happy with this decision. First time using Windows 8 but I am catching on quickly.. very easy to set up and super quiet. The laptop is quite fast and quiet, and so far works for what I need. ok so the not so good things, the keyboard is ok... it feels kinda cheaply made like I may lose keys for some reason... also the sound isn't that great as well so I will end up purchasing external speakers but its ok Im not too picky about it. Also I expedited the shipping but didn't get it in a timely manner which kinda upset me a little bit as I paid extra for that and if I would have done regular shipping it would have been free and I prob would have gotten it at the same time.... I will recommend this product as a light to medium user who doesn't need to do anything extravagant like heavy gaming... thumbs up!!!

Received sooner than expected. Works great, good speed. Very happy with this laptop. I would suggest downloading the latest video driver and touch pad driver, What a difference they made. Touch pad is smooth and reacts a lot better. Video is much smoother with no delays.

I highly recommend this laptop.

I decided for my new laptop to be an ASUS based on some of my friends recommendations. Not this one in particular but they all had old ASUS laptops which lasted them for years without experiencing any problem at all.

I chose this model because I need a lot of hard drive space for my work, and I have always hated to use an external hardrive. For this reason, I am very happy with it. Not only that, but it performs very good in general, specially because it has a good processor and lots of RAM.

There are two things that I'm unsatisfied with, one of them very important. The battery life is extremely short. Even with the screen brightness lowered to almost the minimum, the battery is out in just over 1 hour. On top of that, sometimes it indicates that the battery is not present even though its there and fully charge. Whenever this happens, I am forced to shut down the computer, remove the battery and then plug it in again. This has caused me lots of problems. It could be that this one is defect, but I cannot make an exchange because I live in Europe and bought it in one of my trips to USA.

The second problem is that sometimes, when I turn it on, the fan starts to work and it never stops until I shut it down and turn it back on. I am aware that this could be a software problem, because the day that I received it, the first thing that I did was remove Windows 8 (which is terrible), and installed Ubuntu instead. So it may be that this is causing the fan to go mad sometimes, but because of that experience with the battery, I doubt that is the case.

I hope this helps someone with the desition. When I got it, there were no reviews. I am sure that the next laptop I will buy is not going to be an ASUS

very strong and powerful, good for the all the new games at high graphics settings.

get a little to warm to my opinion on the left side (fan air exit) when running heavy games but still perform perfectly

Win 8 is pretty OK too my surprise and runs flawlessly even when running virtual programs like VMware.

but the big benefit is the 16GB ram which really is limitless when running a bunch of stuff together. perfect for multiple virtual machine "playing"

All the Amazon delivery and service part was flawless... overall a very successful perches for me

***Pros***

I bought this laptop as a family utility machine, it sits in my living room and at least 4 people use it regularly. I was looking for something that was new and had new components, this has a 2nd gen Intel I3 processor along with a USB 3.0 port and bluetooth 3.0. The major pro to this machine is the price along with some new features. The screen display and keyboard are nice as well. It also has a 720P Webcam with facial recognition software and fingerprint reader(it doesn't always work though). For those that care about noise this thing doesn't really make any, my previous laptop fan ran a lot.

***Cons***

I took a star off because the machine has lots of crap software on it. It would be nice if you could have the option of just getting it shipped with the OS only. There are also 3 partitions on the hard drive, 1 called HP recovery, 2nd which is FAT32 for HP tools, and a 3rd for everything else. I'm still working on removing crap software, but it still runs fast and boots in 20 30 seconds.

***Other***

This is not a gaming laptop so if you want it to play the latest and greatest games look elsewhere. You should be able to play most web games or anything that doesn't require a dedicated video card.

Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase. I researched for about a month straight and ended up on this one based on highest functionality for the price combined with the newest hardware.

***Update 8/19/2011***

I updated to 5 stars because I am very satisfied with this machine. The processor is really fast and I really like the USB 3.0 backups are super fast. I don't use the webcam or transport the laptop much so I can't really comment on that. For the price its an excellent machine.

We (I and my wife) did our own comparison with other brands and found this to have the best specification and also value for money. It is originally sold for 570-580$ in HP, so getting this at a huge discount from CircuitCity is really great.

Our goal was to find a decent laptop for home use within budget of 400-450$ dollars. We compared HP-Pavilion g6-1b79dx priced at 429.99$, Toshiba C655-S5128 at 449.99$, Toshiba C655-S5212 at 399.99$, Dell Inspiron 15R i3-380M at 399$, Lenovo ideapad z560 at 449.99$.

For this kind of price, i receive a HD webcam, anti-glare screen, bluetooth and WiFi. Plus i also receive a HDMI port for viewing images/movies on my larger LCD TV. It also comes with Windows 7 (64 bit) which enables the OS to handle large amounts of data (RAM) when compared to 32 bit. The only flaw if i could say so is that it comes with 320 GB Hard drive whereas others might offer you a 500 GB capacity, but who cares! atleast i find the storage capacity enough. Also only HP Probook 4530 XU015UT provides both, bluetooth and WiFi when compared within this price range. (so transfer files from any device to your PC hassle-free)

This is touted as a business laptop in HP website, so you know it means business and not some decorative (read flashy) home laptop. It also comes with a brushed aluminium finish.

This laptop also offers HP enhanced security comes with fingerprint, face detection and other security features which you can enable using HP proprietory software. I found it so good that i ordered 2 of these from Amazon.

We have been using it for about 2 weeks now and thoroughly enjoy watching movies, using WiFi, Skype and other stuff. CircuitCity promptly delivered this to us and i have no reason to complain whatsoever.

Hope you all will find the review helpful

This laptops is awesome.

This laptop has the sandy bridge version of the i3 which has really strong integrated graphics card. and very quick processor.

I was actually able to get around 35 FPS on Civilization V on low setting which means I could run smoothly at medium settings, which also means that you can play alot of other games like MW2, Fifa, NFS, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Red Alert 3, and games at this intensity on low settings. Fifa will surely run on medium settings.

Aside from the specs, The touchpad is a little bit rough at first as if you're touching very fine sandpaper, but after a while of use you get used to it and realize that it actually works better than glossy touchpads on other laptops.

Also the USB hubs are a little bit hard to get extensions in them, but for me that's a plus so that the USBs don't fall off easily.

The screen is really vibrant, although I haven't tested it in direct sunlight. You will also notice that there is a lot of space beyond the display in the front (a good .5 inch on both sides and like 1.5 inches on the top.)

The speakers are actually really loud and crisp clear.

There is bluetooth built in. And there is two USB 3.0 hubs.

It ways a little bit more than your average 15.6 inch laptop, which I guess is due to the brushed aluminum finish on the back and surrounding the touchpad.

Overall this is the best laptop purchase I have ever made.

Honest reviews on HP ProBook 4530s XU015UT 15.6" LED Notebook (2.1 GHz Intel Core

There seems to be a lot of conflicting reviews on this laptop. Some say they have one usb 3.0 port, some say they have two. I purchased this laptop a couple of weeks ago, and the laptop I received DID NOT have any usb 3.0 ports. If that is a problem for anybody they should probably look elsewhere.

As far as the build quality, this laptop is very nice. I really like the brushed metal lid and the hard plastic bottom seems sturdy enough to me. The webcam is decent enough and the dual microphones perform really well. The chiclet keyboard is really nice, and it's convenient to have a number pad. I find myself using the fingerprint sensor to sign in to windows a lot, and so far I've had no issues. Once again the lack of usb 3.0 might but an issue for some, but I find the four usb 2.0 ports sufficient.

Performance wise this laptop is very good for the price. It can definitely handle web applications with ease, but can also easily handle programs like Lightroom 3, and of course microsoft's suite of productivity programs. I have also done some light gaming with games like Counterstrike Source, Portal 2, and Team Fortress 2 with no problems at all. Anything more demanding than those games, and you should look elsewhere (minecraft gave me lots of frame droppage). One more note, the computer was loaded with a lot of crapware (as expected from hp). I had over 90 processes and 50% memory usage on startup, but I don't consider it a huge issue because it's easily fixed if you want.

Overall this laptop is really nice and I would definitely recommend it to anyone except hardcore gamers and others who would need a dedicated GPU. For the price you can't really go wrong!

This is an excellent computer, lending me to believe that HP puts a lot into their probook series of laptops. The touch pad is annoying, but not annoying enough to complain. And as far as the extra software, there was not a lot on it at all. And all you need is a good uninstaller (a third party one, I suggest either Revo or Advanced Uninstaller Pro). Took what I wanted off and I have no problems. This thing has so many other features as well. I would suggest not to uninstall any of the HP software, for some of them have been very helpful. Overall, this was a good solid buy, and I am very happy.

Oh, and unless it is a high model specially designed LP, none of them have good speakers, so don't expect them to. Find a good pair of usb speakers and call it a day.

I bought this during the Black Friday week sales so I got a really good price reduction on the machine. Even at it's current higher price it's still a pretty good deal. It features a core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 640GB internal drive. I haven't had any problem running software/games including Civ 5 which runs quickly and smoothly. The wireless and Bluetooth operate well, though the machine seems reluctant to automatically reconnect to a network once it has entered sleep mode.

The laptop is sturdy and the screen is bright. The keyboard takes a little getting used to as the keys are a bit off-center and some keys that you will use a lot are half-sized (cursor keys, delete, etc.). That takes a little getting used to. The fan is quiet and keeps the laptop cool. It runs noticeably cooler than my previous Dell laptops and much cooler than the HP laptop we have.

It comes with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium and I haven't had any issues with older programs not running. Adding printers is noticeably faster and easier than it was with Vista. Office 10 trial is installed and you can run "starter" for free if you don't want to buy it. That's a nice feature if all you are going to do is basic word processing/worksheets.

The negatives for this model are fairly minor. The number and placement of ports is unusual. There are only four USB ports and two are on the back and the other two near the back, one on each side. I'd rather see over/under dual ports on the side. The other problem is the power cord falls out a lot. As in all the time. Even minor shifts in your sitting position can jar it loose.

Overall it's a very nice machine.

I got this for $785. It appears the price has gone up. It is a good computer, quite fast. I am hoping that it lasts as long as my previous Dell.

I have a few minor quibbles...none of which particularly bother me, but I can see other people not being satisfied as a result of them.

It is not as sturdy as I would like.

There is a lot of "bloatware" installed on the machine that really needs to be taken care of to achieve optimal results.

The faux metal surface where you put your hands to use the keyboard will get scratched by your watch. So if that bothers you, don't get this computer.

The battery life is not amazing. I am getting about 1.5 hours off battery.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i15R-2646MRB 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mars Black)

The real product name of this laptop, as shown in BIOS and in Windows System Information, is Dell N5010. For its price, this is a good laptop, but it can also piss you off if you are peculiar about things:

1. For a 15.6" screen, the resolution is low: 1366x768. Business laptops have standard 1400x900 for 14" screens. I've had one for years and that resolution was great for the screen size. The screen is glossy and will reflect light. Outdoors, it's almost impossible to see anything, unless you hunch over the screen to shade it. POOR vertical viewing angles. 20 degree off the perpendicular direction to the screen, colors begin to shift visibly: whiteout if you look at the screen from above, darkened if you look from a bit below.

2. The keyboard can be really annoying:

silly reassignment of Fn keys to perform laptop-specific functions (volume up/down, Wi-Fi on/off etc.) instead of doing those by pressing Fn+F#. Configurable from the BIOS though.

besides that, the F# keys are labeled a faint blue on black, and are barely visible in a well-lit room. The reflection of the screen on the glossy laptop finish near the hinge doesn't help. The visible labeling is for the laptop function keys (Wi-fi on/off, brightness up/down etc.). This shows how the laptop is aimed at those who don't know what F5 does.

odd placement of the PrintScreen key between Insert and Delete

narrow trackpad buttons, often annoying to hit with the thumb

the arrow keys are too thin, half the height of normal keys

after having used laptops without a numeric keypad for the past few years, the keypad is not only useless; it gets in the way. where I expect Backspace to be, there's now Keypad Minus.

there is no Break key (useful for Win+Break to get the Windows System properties, or Ctrl+Break in command line applications)

there is no context menu key (equivalent to right click on the focused control)

3. My unit had a problem with the fan, while other owners reported theirs worked fine. Maybe Dell has a quality control problem here. For no reason at all, my laptop's fan would ramp up and whir every 2-3 minutes for about 20 seconds, even if there is no spike in CPU load. This became really annoying in a quiet environment, such as a classroom or library. I had updated to the latest BIOS (A12), and the problem was still there. One possible way to "fix" this is to always have the CPU running one core at full speed, e.g. by running some CPU-intensive application like Folding@Home. This will keep the fan at a constant (albeit loud) speed.

So make sure these things don't bother you, or you'll hate the laptop. Try to get a feel for the keyboard and trackpad at a local store (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Fry's etc.)

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i15R-2646MRB 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mars Black)

overall this is a good value laptop esp considering 6 GB RAM/500 GB HDD. screen resolution is great; however battery life is only 2 hours even with dimming the screen. my other dell laptop with a 9 cell battery (albeit 14 inch screen) lasts 4 hours.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Dell Inspiron i15R-2646MRB 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mars Black)

I got this laptop to use while traveling and it does what I wanted it to do. Add to that, the graphics and you have a great deal here. I'm not a big PC gamer, but I decided to try a couple games and see how they would work on the laptop. All the games I've installed so far, have worked perfectly. I've got a couple other Dell laptops I use for everyday things and home entertainment, both cost more than this laptop. The 2 older Dell's I have have the 17" monitors and continue to work great, but it is nice to have the slightly smaller Dell to take on trips with me. I don't use it battery powered too often, but it does have a fairly short battery life. If battery life is your biggest concern, don't bother with a laptop, pick up a netbook. I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of this laptop, especially for the price paid to get it.

I have had it less than a week. I have to confess I am a Gateway fan, there are not many of us left. Last year I bought a Samsung on one of Amazon's daily specials, hate it. It is so slow in opening a browser and once open it continues to be slow, hate it! So this would be my 7th Gateway between desktops and laptops in the last 20 years. When I purchased this one for an older Gateway that is fading I was concerned about 2 things the speed and well Gateway, being it was sold or merged and basically has few offerings anymore. I know nothing about processors and tried to read up on them a little and tried to compare them with other laptop offerings, but frankly I didn't know what I was doing, I just took a chance. It flies, even Explorer seems faster (not a typo) so that part has worked out. One thing I have always liked about Gateway is the touchpad pointing device. In shopping at stores I noticed most laptops now don't let you scroll with the one finger on the right side. This is just a conditioning thing, I have always liked it and this laptop has it and the option of using the 2 finger in the center of the touchpad. It has Windows 8, more cumbersome but not a problem. I didn't give it a 5 simply because I haven't had it long enough. I have to tell you it is very confusing buying a computer that's why I went with Gateway. I bought a ASUS a few years ago and didn't like him so I took a chance with one of my old reliable's.

The L640-L655 Toshibas have a serious software and BIOS issue with the cooling fan. The issue is well-documented on the official Toshiba forum. The cooling fan runs fast and loud (you will not be able to use this computer in airplanes, libraries, classrooms, group work sessions, etc. due to fan speed). The loud fan will prematurely wear out the fan spindle, and uses excessive battery. I am encouraging anyone even considering the purchase of these lines of TOshiba computers to do online research and search these words: Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly. You will see many threads, but the main one has now thousands of views and elucidates the problem well. If you don't wish to look at it now, you will be looking at it intently once you purchase this model of TOshiba. Thus far, there is no fix for this cooling fan software issue. I am posting here as an owner of a Toshiba in this product line and simply as a method to help my fellow Amazon shoppers with a known issue. You certainly can buy or pass based on your own experience and research. Thank you and happy computing.

6/82011: Still issues. Some Toshiba laptops have a fan and cooling issue that is software related.

Google "Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly on", or highlight and right click what I have type here to see the 13 page thread on this subject. The most recent 5 pages are 3-4 non-Toshiba computer programmers trying to solve the problem as Toshiba has been uncaring and useless. The key is to read the thread from the beginning to review all the people who first define the problem. I encourage anyone seeking a Toshiba computer to review the thread to see if their model is affected before purchase--most models are with AMD processors, but some are Intel latest chipsets (e.g. i5). It is not "a few bad computers", it is computers in each of the series specified. The post on the Toshiba Forum from FunkeA dated May 30, 2011 at 4:11pm has a list of Toshibas affected by this issue.

This post is totally informational for you, a potential buyer, so that you can make your own informed decision about which computer to buy before making the purchase. Whether you buy Toshiba, one of these models, a different model, or a different brand, is completely up to you. Thanks and have fun time computer hunting.

Haven't had this unit very long but all seems to be great at this point. I like the small screen and light weight. I would suggest buying a Toshiba wireless mouse to use with this instead of the built in one or a cheap one like Microsoft. Love the LED screen, crisp and clean picture. First time user of Windows 7 so just getting used to it. More later as I use it more.

Now one of them has a broken left click button too! Not to mention the very cheap feel of these things. My Dell Inspiron is 10 times quieter, better quality and ZERO issues.

Cheap Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q880 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q880 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
Cosmetically, the Qosmio looks like a technological piece of art; under the hood, it gets even better. Every time I lay my hands on it, I'm thrilled I made this purchase.

I originally got the X505-Q850 and am posting that review here as well since the 880 is essentially the same laptop and I thought this review would be helpful to people....

I'd been hoping to put off buying a new laptop but the screen on my old HP was failing and I just can't justify sinking money into obsolete tech. I convinced myself I was willing to live with the funky lines running through my screen in favor of being frugal, but with each malfunctioning pixel, it was clear I had to buy a replacement soon.

If you're like me, a new laptop isn't something to be taken lightly. It's a decision I'll have to live with a good many years, so selecting the right model is important since I'll be using it on a daily basis. Well, I'd like to say I did exhaustive research comparison shopping every new laptop, but that simply wasn't the case. I had two basic criteria that eliminated 99% of the laptops on the market: I wanted the largest screen possible and a lighted keyboard.

Enter Qosmio...

(Insert angelic harps here)

Thankfully, Amazon makes it easy to search laptops by attribute like screen size, and the first laptop that came up on my search was the Qosmio x505-Q850 -the pictures were more reminiscent of an elegant sports car than laptop -it was love at first sight. The screen was a whopping 18.4 inches, which is huge for a laptop, and much to my surprise, it even had a lighted keyboard!!!

(Angelic choir join the harps and crescendo for dramatic effect...)

Could finding my perfect laptop be this easy? "Calm down," I tell myself, "looks aren't everything." The price isn't cheap, yet it's nearly half the cost of Alienware, it's nearest rival in specs and looks. Excitedly reading the product info, I was thrilled to see the Qosmio's feature set is just as brilliant on the inside as it is on the outside. With the latest quad core processor, a blazing fast solid state drive for the OS, a 2nd SATA drive, 6gb of memory, the latest NVIDIA graphics card, Bluetooth, HDMI output and Blu-Ray drive, this Qosmio is a powerhouse indeed.

Delving deeper, I learned this new Qosmio had just been released and was in limited supply. Even buying direct from Toshiba was a 2 month wait. Amazon had a few in stock but quickly sold out. With more pixels disappearing on my old HP, I kept a keen lookout hoping someone would get the Qosmio in stock soon. I was hoping to buy at Amazon and get triple points on their credit card (every 2500 points gets me a $25 gift card and triple points on a laptop would be near 6000!!) but alas, a different retailer got in a small quantity, and much as I hated to do it, I cheated on Amazon and made my purchase elsewhere.

When my Qosmio arrived, it was a euphoric experience. The box is red and black with a huge red Q on it and the same detailed design that's on the laptop itself. As I peeled back the box tab to open it, the inside flap had little red letters that said "Enjoy your laptop." My heart fluttered, "I will," I thought to myself, "Don't you worry."

Angelic harps reach their apex as I open the Qosmio box. And there it was -emerging through light beams -with its high gloss black finish glistening, and points of light sparkling off red metallic accents. I challenge anyone to find a more stunning looking laptop.

Okay, so literary embellishments aside, this really is a great laptop. And Windows 7 is pretty awesome too. Boot up time is lightening fast; 45 seconds tops from the moment I hit the power button and I can click on anything and get going instantly. And this new processor is a total beast too. Photoshop CS4 opens near instantly. A 100gb backup took barely over an hour. And rendering video editing is blazing fast too. I'm not a gamer, so I have nothing to report there, but judging by everything else, it ought to be equally fast in that department.

"Gaming Laptop" is just a euphemism for Fast!

If you see a computer that's touted for "gamers" don't assume that's all it's good for. "Gaming computer" just means fast, and who doesn't want a fast computer?? I've seen several reviews that did speed tests pitting this new Qosmio against its rivals and it outperformed them with ease. Granted, it was the only one with this new processor and as others follow suit, the speed comparisons will level off.

Blu-Ray Rom vs Burner

ROM basically means this drive plays Blu-Ray disks but doesn't burn them. (It does, of course, burn DVD+-RW and CDs.) At first, I was disappointed Qosmio didn't have a Blu-Ray burner. But then I realized I'd rather archive all my video to MPEG4 or WMV and watch it directly off Media Share. I already use Media Share to listen to all my music, so why not do the same with video too? It's way more convenient to access MP3 files digitally than it is to load a CD into a player, just like it's easier to do backups with external hard drives as opposed to disks. Digital files are just faster and more convenient, so a Blu-Ray burner may already be meaningless for my purposes.

HDMI Output

One of my favorite features of the Qosmio is the ease with which it can be connected to my 50" plasma! Just run an HDMI cable from your computer to your plasma and it's good to go! Audio is automatically cut from the laptop and plays out the TV instead. And the picture is full 1080p HD! Play any video clip, surf the web or watch a Blu-Ray movie all on your plasma!! Very cool!! Oh, and in case you're wondering, the Qosmio uses a standard HDMI cable, not the mini size seen on camcorders. And Qosmio automatically detects the HDMI signal and turns on an off the external display automatically. You can have both screens active at the same time, or choose between the two. Combined with my Philips Wireless HDMI transmitter and it all couldn't be easier to use.

Lighted Keyboard

I've read some forums where people were upset the keyboard doesn't stay lit all the time and turns off after so many seconds. NOT TRUE -the keyboard CAN be set to stay on all the time. On your Qosmio, just go to: >Start >Toshiba >Utilities >HWSetup >Illumination >then under "Keyboard Backlight," click the radio button "FN" then check the box "On." After you reboot, you'll be able to turn the keyboard on and off by using the "FN" + "Z" keys. Personally, I have my keyboard set to stay on all the time, and naturally, it turns off automatically when the computer is shut down. It's also worth mentioning that the keyboard itself is very smooth and QUIET! I don't know about you, but clackety-clack keyboards drive me nuts! No reason why they can't all be virtually silent like this Qosmio's. I have to strain just to hear a sound -perfect!

No Crapware

I hate it when I buy a new computer and it's loaded with garbage programs that basically amount to advertisers littering all over my new hard drive. Thankfully, Qosmio comes with very little corporate garbage under the hood -a Microsoft Office trial, Quickbooks, Toshiba Online Backup -oh, and that crappy Norton I got rid of on my first bootup. Aside from that, it's pretty much a clean install with only the necessities, and I'm thankful for that. I'll install my own programs, thank you very much! Incidentally, Toshiba did a good job of including some helpful utilities and a decent DVD/CD burning program, so kudos there.

Harman / Kardon Speakers

No, these aren't going to fill a room or blow anyone's hair back, but compared to other laptops I've encountered, these speakers are great! If I'm out on the go, they're just fine and plenty powerful. But when I'm home, I do plug in a set of Altec Lansings for a fuller, dynamic sound. But truth be told, I don't listen to music off my laptop. But I do have it connected to my DirecTV receiver and listen to music on my home theater system via Media Share. There's nothing like it!

Eco-Mode

I applaud Toshiba for including this feature but it's nothing I'll ever use. Basically, you can setup this feature so that at a push of a button, your the Qosmio will conserve energy and you can feel good about reducing your carbon footprint. That's all well and good but I didn't spend 2 grand for a sluggish computer. I paid for speed and I want speed, I'll deal with my carbon footprint elsewhere. I take the bus most places, so I have most people beat right there. I'll burn my laptop as fast as I please; thanks much.

Face Recognition Login

Yes, you heard me -this Qosmio has a built in web cam that's good for video calls via Skype, but it also does one better -the built in web cam also enables the use of face recognition software in lieu of a password for login! Cool!

Fingerprints

The high gloss finish of this Qosmio is stunning but it also picks up fingerprints with ease. Personally, I don't mind. I wouldn't want to sacrifice the Qosmio's lux look and don't mind wiping it down to keep it shiny and clean. Besides, we've all seen the reports that say people's keyboards have more germs on them than a public toilet, so it's a good thing to wipe your laptop down frequently no matter what.

Solid State Drive

I credit Qosmio for wanting to be on the cutting edge but the solid state drive on this thing is way too small -only 64gb. It does have a 2nd 320gb SATA which beats most competitors since it spins at 7200rpm. But the SSD is still small for my taste. To make matters worse, the partitions only give 47gb of usable space. The rest is allocated to a Recovery partition and a hidden partition that contains a backup image that can restore your computer to its out of box state. This could be helpful if you're on the go and something happens but I did make my DVD backup disks as well just for good measure. I don't mind how the partitions are laid out, I just need a bigger SSD and plan to upgrade as soon as the price drops from the stratosphere to something reasonable. But having said that, the speed of this drive is amazing so I'll gladly make do in the meantime. I installed my most taxing programs on the SSD and moved all my documents to the secondary SATA. Thankfully, Toshiba included an easy utility that helps migrate the user files to the secondary drive so as to help conserve space on the SSD.

Windows 7 64bit NOT 32bit

The description says 32bit but this is actually 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded with ease to Ultimate and it did take less than 10 min just as advertised.

Bluntly, this laptop puts most gaming desktops to shame. The I7 processor is a true upgrade from the Core 2, 1066MHz RAM and SSD give you enough bandwidth and read speed to reduce load times incredibly, and the huge HD screen is like sitting in the front row at a theater. Add to that Blu-Ray, the undisputed best speakers I have ever heard on a portable, and a full-sized illuminated keyboard and you will realize why this is the most impressive gaming laptop on the market.

The price is extremely reasonable given the feature set. Previous generation gaming portables could lighten your wallet by almost $3,000 for stock options, while this one is under $2,000 with just about every bell or whistle you could want. Building a desktop with similar specs would set you back nearly $1,400, thus a $500 price premium for portability is more than acceptable.

In multimedia, simply put, the Qosmio Q880 will handle anything you throw at it. Blu-Ray is flawless, as is 1080P downloaded content. The speakers are very powerful for their size but do lack bass response like all small speakers, though I was impressed with what it had. It seems to use the chassis as a wave guide for low frequencies. The screen is bright with good color reproduction, easily the match of a desktop display, and even when viewed very closely (in your lap for instance) retains sharpness.

As to gaming, again there is no current title that this laptop cannot handle. In extremely demanding games you may have to turn off a few bells and whistles to play at 1920x1080, the same as you would with a single card in a desktop. 6GB of RAM as opposed to the usual 3 or 4 in gaming laptops is refreshing, giving overhead rather than trying to match the current batch of high end games. World of Warcraft, The Sims 3, Borderlands, and Mass Effect 2 all run without a hitch.

Finally the laptop-y things; Battery life is good for a gaming laptop but this is by no means a netbook. You'll get about 2.5-3 hours in constant use provided you're not running 3D games or anything more demanding than Internet and Office apps. Thanks to a CPU that can not just ramp down its frequency but shut off parts of itself on demand, you can have battery life and power in the same box. The appearance of the unit is very cool, but I tend to think a lot of people would like options other than black and red.

A few things I was disappointed to find: There is no install media included with the Q880. I know it is easy to create restore disks, but when plopping down nearly two grand for a laptop you'd think the least they could do would be to print a few DVDs. The first thing I do with a prebuilt system is reinstall everything without the bloatware, and having to use several of my own blank DVDs is asinine. As of my receipt of this unit there are no valid drivers for the GeForce 360M, and the ones available from Toshiba's site do not support it either. (The ones that come preloaded into the OS are edited to support the 360M and are a bit out of date. I had to hack my own to bring them to current, and there are minor bugs as the official drivers do not yet exist. After nVidia officially releases the 300 series a driver will be available.)

Does everything Toshiba advertises! I also had many, many specialized utilities and all have run under 64-bit Win 7. Buying a pre-packaged/integrated system sure was much easier than getting the desktop I built afterwards online ... Not cheap but great/fast shipping, great system stability and operaiton. Can't comment on the value of the warranty as I have not used it ... and I am a VERY heavy usenet user frequently downloading 24x7 several days per week! Even the sound system is adequate in this laptop which is big and heavy but very easy to read (large screen) and the fastest laptop I have ever seen! If you can afford it highly recommended. As a 56 year old electronics engineer computing over 30 years I am very impressed with this Toshiba product.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q880 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop

Unboxing a new laptop is usually a good indicator of how your overall experience is going to be with it: I couldn't ask for more. Not only was the laptop packaged securely, it wasn't over-packaged. The box is just big enough to ensure safe shipment while small enough to save for the length of the warranty should something bad happen to it.

Once it was setup and turned on, I was blow away by the speed of the Solid-State Drive. Windows 7 started quickly and the registration process was as painless as I've ever remembered. There's even a wizard that assists you in migrating the user folders from the SSD (C:\) to the ample 500GB SATA (E:\) hard drive.

The controls on the left hand side of the massive keyboard (with full 10 key) are easy enough to find, sometimes by accident, but that's more due to my massive hands. The buttons (or just the way they beep when pressed) are easily turned off, if you like, in a Toshiba provided configuration utility.

The sound is awesome: The speakers are clear and non-tinny with lots of mixer/effect options. Headphone support is as good as you could ask for with 1/8" jacks for input and output.

Video, of course, is as luxurious as you'd expect from 18.4 inches of LCD glory at 1900x1080 full-HD resolution. I have an HD LCD TV I intended to use with the HDMI port, but honestly I'd rather have the upconverting DVD/Bluray experience all to my self on this screen.

Speaking of ports, this computer is LOADED with them. 3 regular USB ports give you room for all sorts of devices while a shared eSATA/USB port will charge external devices (iPods, cell phones, etc) even when turned off. The IEEE-1394 port is great for the firewire devices I still have and the media card reader makes moving digital images from my CD cards a breeze. The Bluetooth sensor found my external mouse immediately, freeing up a USB slot for that adapter!

The touchpad has a distinct texture from the palm rest, and it's very finger friendly. If you use an external mouse like I do, the touchpad can be disabled with a button right above it, again perfect for my hands. The keyboard is backlit and lacks the loud "clicky" sound when used.

6GB of DDR3 ram makes this thing fly through applications. Then with 1GB of DDR5 (yes FIVE) ram on the newest nVidia 360M video card, you have system/graphic performance better than most full sized PC's.

The things this laptop has against it are small, but worth noting to help people make up their minds.

The palm rest and top of the LCD lid are shiny: If you have greasy hands, you'll smudge the case quickly. Even if your hands are clean, after a few days you'll want to give it a quick wipe down.

The weight is heavier than other laptops, but lighter than most of the gaming/video editing/graphic design desktops I've used that this computer outpaces. Still, if you're looking for a computer you can port around like nothing, this machine may be too heavy for you.

The 64GB SSD gets filled quickly if you don't save files to the SATA hard drive. The SSD is a standard form-factor, and can be upgraded with relative ease, but provided you use the massive 500GB drive for your files and programs, it's not too small in the least.

The availability is bad. Toshiba simply cannot keep up with the demand for this computer. As a result, prices are $300 to almost $400 higher than Toshiba's factory direct price. Unfortunately if you want one in stock now as opposed to the now 6 week wait for one to be built, this is your only choice.

My personal gripe is that while the i7-720QM processor is fast, the i7-820QM processor is available on the market, and the i7-920QM is appearing on the scene. The plus side is that you can upgrade the processor (and SSD) as the form-factor for the processors does not change with the model. If a Bluray burner is ever released, I'll be upgrading that too.

As there are no 4.9 star ratings, I'll just have to give this computer 5.

I am blow away, and very happy indeed.

I have been thrilled with my Qosmio 880 purchase. It has handled everything I have thrown at it performance-wise without even breathing hard. The monitor displays beautiful graphics and the video card has no problem keeping up. It also boots up very quickly. On the con side, it is very heavy, but I knew that when I bought it. It is a desktop replacement so I wasn't too concerned about weight. The biggest complaint I have is the keyboard. The layout feels awkward. The keys are set very far back and the extra room around the wrist makes it so you have to roll your hand forward to reach the keys. Also, the media buttons on the left side are very sensitive and close to the keys, so I find myself turning the sound on and off accidentally if my pinky strays too far. However, this is not such a huge issue that it detracts from the overall package, just the one thing I could find wrong with an otherwise excellent machine.

I actually want to give this laptop 4 1/2 stars, with the 1/2 star removed for combo of low rpm drive (standard on a lot of low to mid-range laptops) and casing that seems a little flimsy (I am used to sturdy Thinkpad case). Otherwise, this is a great laptop performance in both processor and graphics. I replaced the drive (I highly recommend you do this with at least a 7200 rpm hdd) with a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive so I can't speak much for the existing OS, but I did install all their add on drivers and I do like their wireless identifier at the login screen letting you know you are connected. The windows experience rated everything except my replaced hard drive with a 5.9, not bad at all for a sub-500 laptop!

As for testing, I simultaneously backed up a dvd I owned while at the same time converted a movie iso image to an mkv. While the processor maxed out encoding at 27 fps(common enough in encoding) with dvd copy at 4 MB/s the memory stayed at a reasonable level (under half of system memory). I also viewed several blu ray rips I had made from movies I own on my desktop and there was no stuttering or problem handling even the most visually stunning movie. I don't really play pc games so I can't review this, but I'm sure this can handle most 720p 1333x1768 game displays with no problem.

I should also mention I did not pay Amazon's standard price (the factor that tipped me to buying this particular laptop) but even at that price point it beats out the other i3 laptops on the market (and perhaps even some current i5s due to fusion graphics)

I bought this for my wife so hopefully she likes it as much as I do!

This is a sharp-looking, inexpensive laptop with decent CPU and GPU power for the price. It has a few glaring shortcomings though, two of which are unfortunately major.

Pros:

1. Discrete ATI video card

2. Bright screen

3. Nice looking

4. Perfectly adequate speed for any normal tasks

5. HDMI out

Neutral:

1. 720P resolution is too low for a 15" screen. Unfortunately, this is nearly the standard on lowand mid-end 15" laptops now, so Toshiba is no worse than most other manufacturers.

Cons:

1. There is no latch or magnet to hold the lid closed -you just close it and hope it stays shut. When you carry it, the lid tends to bang against the base of the laptop because there is typically a 1-2 mm gap between the lid and base due to the lack of any latching mechanism. It does not feel solid and secure at all when carrying it.

2. The screen has worst viewing angle and glare problem I have ever experienced on a laptop, hands down. Granted, my last laptop was a MacBook Pro with a gorgeous IPS screen and cost 3x as much, but I was not prepared for how poor this TFT screen would be when used in even moderately bright indoor conditions, or in just about any lighting conditions when displaying dark images.

3. No backlit keyboard. This is annoying when trying to use it in low-light conditions, but you can't call this a major flaw at this price point.

I purchased this laptop from Amazon and have had it for 2 weeks. This is a relatively new model with a new cpu and a June 2011 release date. My previous laptop was a HP DV6165 an AMD dual core running Windows XP. This laptop blows that one away in every aspect. It comes with a healthy 4 Gb of ram, which is not the max, but it runs Windows 7 very nicely. The WEI is a 5.8 and held back due to the 5400 rpm HD. I am sure with a SSD this laptop would scream. The cpu scores a 6.9 WEI. If you want to validate this, check out the CPU performance charts as a comparison. The AMD cpu in this scores right up there with Intel's I5's and B940's and literally blows away my one sons old Q6600 overclocked (passed down from dad) quad.My desktop is a Intel I-7 with a Crucial SSD hard drive. I have been running Raid arrays in my last three computers. So you can see, I do know a bit about performance. This laptop has got it. I have not tested it for games yet as my gaming rig has dual GTX460's so I probably won't be gaming on the laptop. I don't think you will be disappointed with this laptop. The software on it is not too overdone either. The case is a light gray with a block pattern in it. It is not as pretty as some but for the price it is well worth it.

Edit 9/4/11: Just finished watching a movie while ironing some clothes. Played beautifully. To the guy with the gaming problem, there is a video update on the Toshiba website. This may fix your issue. I have not seen it with mine. Minimal games but no issues thus far! I really love mine and am very happy with it. I did increase the ram to 8 Gb with a recent sale from a certain store, new egg for $35. Seems a bit snappier now but it was no slouch before it either.

I love my computer, it's awesome. It connects to the internet extremely well, it is easy to work, and it is super fast! I think that the only problem I have with it is that it's constantly downloading updates, but it is still fairly new, so that makes sense. It's very light and compact, and you can take it practically anywhere. The base doesn't get very warm either, so it won't burn you if you have it sitting on your lap. It's very functional, and everything that I've put on it works great. So if you're looking for a really nice laptop that's relatively cheap, this is the one!!

I recieved my laptop on 21 Aug from Amazon. Its a beauty, simply turned it on, set up the wi-fi and I was away laughing. The performance is fantastic as was the purchase price. I live in NZ and I have had no problems at all using my laptop here. The same item cost 4 times the price of the Amazon deal (shipping and import costs included). So this purchase represented great value.

I mostloy surf the net and do a bit of consulting on the side. This laptop is exactly right for the job. Ideal in fact. Highly recommended.

I bought this laptop as a post birthday gift for my man and I can say it was totally worth the saving. Since it is almost our 7th year together, I wanted to gift him something that he would really love! Acer was one of the first brands that came up with the latest intel 2nd generation core series processors and I found this one with more options in the price that suits my pocket. The delivery was finely on time, nothing unusual happened.

I would like to add the things I like most in the laptop and these are also the things that I didn't find in other laptops of the same price range. I don't use it everyday, so it is based on my experience with the laptop and the things that he agrees too. First of all, I just love the keypad; it's very user-friendly and I practically could work faster when I used it. ( I am a freelance writer so I do a lot of typing :p)

Secondly, the upper side of the laptop, which may not be very apparent from the pictures here, is textured. This makes the surface scratch and shock proof and makes it look extremely elegant in comparison to the laptops with glossy finishes.

The laptop is so lightweight that I can literally place it on my laps, sit in the couch and work for hours (I did it!).

Right now, I can't think of anything that I'd point as a minus one for this smart device. The only thing I experienced the other day and my man agreed too, is that when you use it while charging on your laps, keep your hands off the HDMI port because it may give you a very minor (you may not even notice it) electric shock. It's better to use the laptop on the table or any wooden surface while charging it. It also can be avoided you are in contact with anything that doesn't conduct electricity within.

He bought a Targus bag from a retail store for the laptop and it is till day serving great. He has a desktop PC with 22" LED, core i5 and other stuff but all he uses now is this laptop! I am so happy that it turned out just the perfect gift for him!

He is an average user and seeing him using it for almost 2 months now, I would definitely recommend it.

Well i was really leary about buying an alienware mostly because of the price and less expensive laptops you could get for a lesser price with the same or higher specs. Well here's the reason this is so worth it, and much better. First off all parts on the inside are intel genuine parts, Nvidia genuine parts and the whole laptop is build from the ground up with super top notch components. Lots of computers such as Acers, Gateway, HP, and even Sony use other companies to manufacture there motherboards graphic cards, screens etc etc. This thing is an absolute sherman tank, and just looks and feels down right indestructible. When i pulled it out of the box (which looked like is cost about 100$ itself i was like wow impressive). It was wrapped in a velvet black Alienware sleeve which was pretty unique, upon opening it i couldn't believe the weight(could be a con for some people), and then i realized this thing has METAL components, on the sides, bottom and the back of the screen. How often do you see that, never? So yes this thing is well worth the money. Now onto the specs. What it doesnt tell you(i'm writing about the Best Buy model) is that this unit is equipted with two yes two GPU's. One is the main Nvidia GTX 260, the other an Nvidia 9400, so basically the more powerful GPU feeds off the lesser one to give you extra graphical and gaming ability, and yes it shows, big time. The resolution may not be full 1080p(its 1440x900) but who really cares? Check on Xbox and Ps3 and you'll find there are very very few games that even run at full 1080p resolution, even upscaled the games look noting like on this thing. I've played Bioshock, Red Faction Guerilla, Resident Evil 5, and Crysis so far all without a hitch, even Crysis you can play at very high setting with a playable frame rate. The glossy screen really brings out the details and vibrant colors especially with antialiasing, even though its not the brightest in the world, its great. The slot loading DVD-RW is great, loads very quickly, and runs quietly. Don't be fooled by all the hype of the new I series intel chipsets, the i7 did not make that much of an impression on me, this thing has the Quad 2 Core running at 2.0 ghz, and the system rating for calculations per second are 6.9. The i7 in most of the other gaming machines is about 7.0 or 7.2, whoopi do, who really cares?? Also the overall look of this machine is just beautiful, the keys are atomatically set to blue, but you can change them to about any color you want using the Alienware Utility Console.

The battery can get up to 3 hours if you turn down the screen and don't really game TO heavy, so thats definitely a plus. I got fed up with Asus because of allll kinds of wireless issues, blue screens of death, disc read errors, squashed unresponsive keys, and just some overall major screwups with the machines themselves. So yes i payed the extra money figuring this would be better and it way surpassed my expectations, being that it blows the more modern but fading Asus G60 and G72 series laptops out of the water. The speakers in the front also glow the same color as the keys or a different variety if you want, which is really something. On another note i opened the box with the power adapter and its a flat box type shaped, not the usual box Xbox 360 type adapter you usually get with gaming machines. I will add another 2 gigs(to get 6) just to add it, but heck it doesnt even need it, this thing is still a multitasking beast. I think anything over 6 gigs is really uneeded sine most games require no more than 3 gigs anyways, and that would be a shock. So as i've praised this is the first REAL gaming laptop i've ever owned, all the rest were ok but nothing compared to this thing. When they say its made for heavy duty gaming and multitasking they weren't kidding. This beast will surely stand the test of time, and is also upgradable for any GPU out there, but i don't think i'll ever need anything more. If you have the cash don't waste your time with Asus, Cyperpower, or even Toshiba Qosmio, even it the specs are better this thing is specifically designed for heavy use. The sound quality is the loudest i've ever heard, and also has a subwoofer. The only one thing that is a slight small issue is when your playing games the fan is realllly loud, but i really could care less considering i know it will never overheat, umm thats what the fans and cooling system are for. I've had other laptops where the fan didn't even run, not good. So enough going on and on, if you have the cash or credit just get it, its not just for gamers its for anyone that ones a really awesome looking and performing laptop to last for many years. One last funny thing is you get an Alienware black hat, and a manual bound in leather that looks like a bible, and also an Alienware alienhead sticker for, well wherever you wanna stick it. HA.

Only two things, no blu ray, which i could care less since i have it on my PS3, and i wish in these units they would put a 16x or 18x DVD burner, instead of just 8x.

I was skeptical about this laptop until I got my hands on this beautiful computer system. It's got the power I was seeking for high-end gaming without breaking the bank. I did extensive research on laptop gaming systems for more than a month before I found the right system for me at the right price. Alienware M17x-2857DSB 17-Inch Laptop (Black) So many other systems like the Qosmio line had reliability issues. Others like the Vaio didn't have enough video power to handle games at more than medium video settings. This Alienware M17x has the quality, reliability and horsepower needed for the latest games with high video quality settings.

No, it doesn't have the newer Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, but it IS a Quad Core Q9000! The rest of the components list is a dream come true...DUAL nVidia GTX 260m graphics cards (1 GB memory per) with SLI enabled, slot loading DVD burner, bluetooth, wifi n, 4gb of DDR3 1333 ram... all the qualities I needed for a serious gaming rig. Sound quality is much better than average. I'll probably still end up using a headset while gaming. It's also built like a tank with a full aluminum case. Customizable lighting system is pretty cool too. I could've done without all the extra lights, but the backlit keyboard is awesome and was a "must have" on my list.

Alienware is definitely worth the extra money if you can afford it, and if you're looking for a quality built computer and a reliable portable gaming system. As for the price, Amazon is selling it for a fantastic savings! I built the exact same computer on the Alienware site using the exact same components, and it came out over $350 more expensive than it did from Amazon! You won't be disappointed...I haven't been!

First of all, let me say in plain english, Do Not Buy an M17x or any other Alienware PC.

I remember that once upon a time, dell was a great company. They built quality consoles, they had the warranty that set the industry standard, they cared about their customer support. It is clear to me that these things no longer matter to Dell. A big name and customer loyalty brings us back time after time. Over the past decade, I have given them dozens of referrals and direct purchases, but in the year since I purchased my dell M17x 8GB with dual Nvidia 260M graphics in SLI and an Intel i7 processor, I have actively scuttled just as many purchases by telling all about my personal experience.

Its unstable. Out of the box, brand spanking new, it barely even qualifies as a paper weight. It took me 3 days, and probably 30 hours to get through simply downloading and installing window's updates, firmware mismatches all kinds of errors and stuff that i'll get into later caused me so many problems that its not even funny. If your top of the line(or at least above average) gaming PC can't even run Mcaffee or your own on-board Aliensense programs, then how the hell are you going to run dragon age, fallout, league of legends, even counterstrike or NES Emus?

So, what kinds of problems did I experience? The laptop will power down completely without even attempting to shutdown windows and completely without warning. The screen goes solid white with a streak of random pixels near the bottom. The computer freezes... FREEZES. I haven't seen that since High-school and Pentium 3. and these errors can occur with or without an obnoxiously loud tone blasting me in the face for a minimum of 3 seconds while i try to hard off the PC.

The obvious issues. Well, first of all there was an obvious NVIDIA driver conflict with something on-board. since alien-sense is the only non-standard program that comes pre-installed, i choose to blame that, however it doesn't really matter. after trying 5-6 other Nvidia drivers I find one that doesn't crash my computer every 30 mins like clockwork. Issue two. Poor design. The screen is too far back, the external shell gets too hot, too fast thanks to poor internal cooling, mother-board has no internal sensors on-board, inferior components like the SSD that they charged me to install but has a SLOWER read/write speed than my last HDD. Also the "break me" button at the top right has no tactile response, no toggle and no "oh i didn't mean to break my pc, UNDO" button. see below.

Less obvious problems. the "break me" button also called "stealth mode" instantly insures that you will not have a moment's rest until you figure out what exactly stealth mode is and why you never-ever want to graze that button. Stealth mode is dell's commitment to green in action. when you touch that button, it will instantly shut off all graphics cards except for the one built into the i7(which cant handle much) underclock your CPU, shut down anything that is drawing power from a USB port, kill your wifi, bluetooth, even your keyboard lighting. anything to conserve power, except of course toggle down the brightness on your monitor. you need to use window's settings to do that. and before you ask, no. you can neither disable, nor change the settings of the "break me" button, and no. once "break me" mode is initiated, you can't turn it off. you must unplug the pc, power down the pc restart the pc, go into the Bios for the PC, mess with the settings re-enabling all the stuff that is disabled(like your USB port and hybrid graphics), plug in your pc and restart it. first of all, the creation of such a button on a GAMING PC is just dumb. next everything it does, you can do through settings or by unplugging your externals, windows calls this "power management." third, there is no way to make this setup stable. i need at least one GPU to run windows for more than 5 minutes without it crashing, period. hence the "break me" button.

also if the laptop comes unplugged, perhaps you foolishly wanted to present a project or surf the web while watching TV you must restart your computer in order to re-enable hybrid graphics, i guess the battery just can't provide that much power. I do get an NVIDIA GPU though which is handy if i'm not interested in gaming or doing anything processor intensive. it should be noted that i needed an alienware patch before, under some circumstances, the power supply that came with the PC was recognized as "the proper" power supply. as if i happened to have a compatible low-watt version hanging out at home and i thought "gee, all computer parts are interchangeable" derp.

presently, my alienware pc is more or less stable. but, needless to say, i came very very close to sending it back before everything clicked. i say more or less because it can still glitch out when i push it and every once in a while when i don't. so i say it again. Don't buy an Alienware M17x. I hear good things about ASUS, Lenovo, and even HP if you aren't obsessive about high end graphics.

Honest reviews on Alienware M17x-2857DSB 17-Inch Laptop (Black)

I purchased this laptop a year and three months ago. Both the video card and the motherboard failed one month after the waranty expired. I sent it in to Dell and for about $600 they replaced the failed components. Just over 30 days after this, the video card failed again. Interestingly, this was just after the 30 day waranty on their maintenance expired! Further, Dell no longer supports the computer and referred me to Z-Tronics to have the video card replaced. Z-Tronics just told me that they don't have the video card and have no idea when they will get them again. So, now I have a $2k+ brick.

My advice? Don't by an Alienware. Dell is supporting these computers very poorly.

First off let me say my 1 star approval rating is based on my 1st Alienware system.

The first night I got my Alienware M17x I had to call technical support because the Cyberlink Power DVD 8 software produced a series of horizontal lines across the middle of the screen. I was on the phone with tech support from 8:00pm-12:00 midnight the first night. Alienware Technical Support was very helpful and got this problem resolved but the bottom line; I was on the phone all night. The next day I went to a friends house to watch a couple of videos and before we finished watching them, all of my desk top icons had changed to a generic Windows format and were inoperable. This issue took over 8 hours on the phone with technical support to resolve. These system/software problems continued to persist and "evolve", as quoted by tech support, for almost two weeks. After two weeks of nothing but problems I had spent a total of about 40 hours on the phone with technical support. The last day of ownership of this system I spent 13 hours on the phone with Alienware technical support and customer service. One time that day after being on hold for almost an hour Alienware customer service hung up on me.

After all these problems, and I've only mentioned a small portion of them, I finally got smart and contacted Amazon's five star customer service. Amazon gave me the option of a refund or replacement! I opted for a replacement because I believe this is atypical of what Alienware produces. I wanted to give them another chance.

Just a little more detail about the excellent Amazon Customer Service.... I contacted them 4 March 2010. This was a Thursday, and it was mid afternoon. By Friday, 5 March 2010, they had a new Alienware system on it's way to me via Federal Express. By Saturday, 6 March 2010, before 12:00 noon I had received my new Alienware M17x. The Amazon customer service represenative I spoke with, 4 March 2010, even seemed genuinely concerned that I get some sleep after I explained to her I had been up 13 hours on the phone with Alienware tech and customer service. Amazon even gave me a refund for the return shipping after I called them and gave them the return tracking number. This was something that was totally unexpected. I checked with my credit card company online and the refund has already posted as of, 8 March 2010. Outstanding job Amazon!

I've had my second new Alienware M17x system, Amazon shipped to me, for two days and I've done everything I could to check it for faults. So far this system seems to be totally problem free. I'll come back in two weeks or so and if it's still problem free I think I'll rerate it four or five stars.

Alienware/Dell Customer service could learn something for Amazon.

If you want to buy something from a company who will stand behind the products they sell Amazon is the best choice. I think they're better than Wal-Mart. Thank you so much Amazon. Your up there with the stars. You're stellar!!!

Sincerely, Paul Orand

I've owned this for about 4 months now, I purchased it for 1400. I cant believe its a laptop... I was very hesitant before getting this, the reviews seem to be all over the place when being rated. I cant speak on their customer service, mine has been working with no issues at all but I dont want to find out. It really has the power of a desktop (almost the weight as well, it is heavy!) and great airflow. It will still get hot if its on your lap but internally it seems to be fine with all that hardware. An I7 cpu and 12GB RAM with a 3GB Graphics card is a powerhouse for a desktop, let alone a laptop. And for the money it is a great deal. It seems though that its hit or miss when buying one of these, some are great right out of the box, others BSOD or other service issues. Battery life is laughable, it is a "desktop replacement" tho.. I've been able to play games like SWTOR and Battlefield 3 on max settings, runs as smooth as can be and the 17.3 in. screen is just the right size (to keep it at least semi-mobile) and super clear (true HD display). I added a samsung SSD drive to it, was really easy to install and was only $79. The 7200 rpm sata3 HDD is quite fast but the SSD is just a bit faster. Ergonomic wise, its pretty comfortable for a laptop, full keyboard with number pad. Its still a laptop though and you would do better to have a real keyboard for it. If your situation is like mine: the need for more space, the ability to take your gaming on the road, and the desire for a powerhouse of a computer on the cheapish side that is great for all processes and games, then this is the one. If you really have no need to go mobile, just get a desktop.

This laptop is the best laptop you can get without spending your life savings almost. With great specs like RAM and i7 processor. You can't go wrong. I ran Bioshock: Infinite and Mirror's Edge on ultra graphics with no problems. Its portability is a little difficult, considering its size, but indefinitely worth it.

I have now had this laptop for about 6 months now and all of the ASUS bloatware had to be removed for this laptop to run halfway decently. Also the audio output jack just went out, so now I have to probably ship this laptop back just to fix a simple audio output jack.. though it will not accept any male adapters that fit in my iPad, girlfriend's laptop, android phone, and my girlfriend's iphone as well.

To keep it simple.. do not buy from ASUS as they've already caused me enough headache and well more than $1600 (the price I paid for this laptop) worth of my time.

original review "I'm running Windows 7 64bit, the OS that came with the laptop.

It's locked up on me over 20 times already, and the only software I've installed is MS Visual Studio, NotePad++, Sublime Text 2, Google Chrome, MS Visio, Pidgin, and Skype. There is absolutely no reason for this.

Today, it locked up three times in less than 10 minutes. (Lock up, hard power reset, wait, start PC, sign in to windows, let a few apps load: repeat two times.)

I should return the PC now but i'm going to give it another few days."

We bought this for my son, who is an editor, and this system is just about a desktop as far as speed and power. The video is exceptionally good resolution almost as good as my 30" desktop monitor 2560 x 1600 so the smaller screen with the 1080 looks great a little more money than a commodity laptop but what you get is well worth it if you do any real work or even watch movies then there is the game capacity I don't think you can beat it.

Amazon merged the two models into one page and fixed most of their info, but they have the battery life listed as nine hours in one place and six hours in another; the six hour figure is correct (thanks, Philip!).

Also, the cheaper model (T115D-S1120) has a single core 1.6 GHz processor, not a dual core 1.5 GHz processor. This is currently still incorrect on one part of the page.

I have a 16 inch Toshiba dual core/4gb ram I purchased a year ago and loved it, but I wanted something mobile with a longer battery life. I love Toshiba quality and decided they can have my business again. I was looking around for a netbook but then this came out. I went with the dual core just in case I needed to photoshop and watch movies on it later. I've looked at 10.1 inch screens, and they were just so tiny and have to scroll a lot when when reading online. 11.6 inch screen is perfect, I don't notice the screen size being a problem. Screen is beautiful, watching HD shows and movies look fine and play fine.

I have had this for about week and have done mostly web browsing and haven't ran it through the ringer with memory hog programs life photoshop yet but it feels just as fast as my 16 inch dual core with 4 gb of ram. I usually get over 4.5 hours battery life on bright settings but I put it on eco mode which dims the backlight and I get 5+ hours.

I watch youtube videos with ease but speakers are not the best which doesn't matter since I use headphones on it. Hulu, Facebook, you name it all work just as fast as my laptop. Itunes works great.

One thing was common in reading netbook reviews was that you can't expect it to replace your regular laptop or desktop. I honestly think this product can, especially if your an average user who watches youtube, listen to music, web browse. I didn't see the need to upgrade Ram yet and probably won't so I don't sacrifice more battery life.

One complaint is that is does get warm when I'm using it constantly but not like it is burning my leg warm. I'm used to the track pad but prefer using a wireless mouse. I picked up another logitech wireless mouse which works perfectly. If your thinking of getting a netbook, or just a laptop that has a long battery life but don't want to sacrifice power, this is it.

I have been skeptical about purchasing a netbook instead of a traditional laptop for a computer for my wife to use around the home. Man am I glad I plucked down the extra $100.00 over other good netbooks. This thing is a powerhouse! About the only difference between this netbook and 2 year old laptop technology is the missing optical drive, on the other hand unlike many netbooks it comes loaded with Windows 7 premium instead of starter (A major problem in other netbooks). Another dynamite plus in this netbook is the included HDMI port to hook up your computer directly to a HDTV and watch Hulu, amazon on demand, netflix, or other streaming broadcasts. The laptop is as fast as any other middle of the line laptop, which makes it exceptionally fast for a netbook.

The keyboard did take me about 20 minutes to get used to, and while some review sites give the buttons a big thumbs down, they are okay after using them for a while. If I am using this netbook on a desk I am likely to hook up a wireless mouse to it.

The included battery lasted 5 1/2 hours using it for the Internet and word processing.

When I ran itunes, MS Word, Firefox, and a few other smaller programs the computer did not have any trouble with lag time. Boot time is a bit slower than I would like, but no complaints given it is a netbook. Like I said, I feel like it performs as well as any new laptop from a few years ago.

The weight is perfect to carry around the house, which my wife needs during the day with a newborn. It is very thin and very light.

I did not have any difficulty with scrolling while looking at websites I have yet to run into one that has to be scrolled horizontally.

If you are looking for a netbook, but are put off by tiny keyboards, slow response times, slightly too small screens, and can spend a little extra, this is my favorite netbook out of the many I spent time researching and playing with at Best Buy and Walmart.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1120 LED TruBrite 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I just received my S1125 a couple of days ago and I'm very pleased with it. I've looked hard at the various models in the area between a netbook and a full-sized laptop, and I think this is one of the best machines of that type. The display is gorgeous; 1366 x 768 at 11.6" is really nice and the Radeon 3200 graphics chip is excellent. I bought it along with the Toshiba external DVD drive and additional 2GB of RAM; so far both are working very well. As far as I'm concerned, this thing is the perfect size: it's small and light enough to carry it around, but it's still big enough to have a usable screen and keyboard. I've used a Dell Mini 10 netbook with an Atom N270 CPU, and although it worked, I wasn't happy with the performance.

So far I've added 2 GB of RAM (it took less than a minute; anyone can do this), resized the primary Windows partition, installed Ubuntu 9.10 in parallel (dual boot), and started playing with it. I hooked it up to my 1080p 46" HDTV via HDMI and watched an HD streaming episode of Battlestar Galactica. It looked great, and this machine had no problem keeping up with the HD stream from Amazon. I removed some of the crapware (Norton being a prime example) and installed Microsoft Security Essentials (free anti-virus from MS...it's actually pretty good. In fact, it's better than most of the alternatives; I've tried them all.) The keyboard is pretty easy to use; the touch pad works fine, but I usually use a wireless USB mouse if I'm doing much work with a laptop. I've only just started playing with the webcam, but the pictures I've taken so far are grainier than I expected. I haven't had an integrated webcam before, so maybe this is the way they usually look.

Windows 7 is actually pretty nice, though I prefer linux in general. If you're going to buy a machine with Windows 7, go for one like this with Win 7 Home Premium rather than Starter Edition. Starter is a sad, crippled version, one with which you won't be happy.

i've had the T115D-S1125 for a couple of weeks now and love it. Screen is sharp, the black case isn't as bad a finger print magnet as i thought it might be. keyboard is good to type on and hdmi out is very useful. Few minor things stop me from giving 5 stars. Battery life is around 4 hours or less when doing more intensive operations like playing video. when using hdmi out to display to a tv, video stutters a little mainly on hulu, my macbook pro is fine as a comparison. trackpad takes a bit of getting used to and i made a lot of accidental clicks till i got used to it. Overall really like the laptop 4 hours battery life is still very good, love the screen and small size, surprised how good performance of the laptop and windows 7 are together and find i use this now for my main laptop in preference to my macbook pro.

This is a good laptop, it runs mainly all the graphic intense pc games without a problem. I get 150 FPS on League of Legends, and it also runs Mass Effect 2 with high settings pretty smooth. I'd recommend this laptop but the downside to it is that the keyboard feels pretty cheap and delicate, not backlit and gets dirty pretty easily. The audio from the speakers is terrible, it sounds like nothing but static and no base. My speakers are already messing up and i haven't even played much audio on full blast! Basically the speakers are low quality, use your headphones if you have any for music. Overall its a decent laptop for a bargain price.. For those of you who don't know about AMD graphics cards, the one built into this one is more or less equivalent to an NVIDIA GT 640 2GB.

Yeah this lap has everything to start playing Minecraft in a blink, the only thing you need it's a good source of nachos and unlimited supply of soda, aaaand you're good to go!

Besides jokes, this laptop it's a pretty good one, the only limitation it's the Windows 8, but all the hardware it's impresive.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite S855-S5164 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed

In my opinion it is better than I expected by design, with low weight and very comfort, in hand design looks more attractive than in the pictures.

For me and my work as programmer is quite enough, The processor and the main memory is very good and enough, and the video card which is ideal for price comparison.

One of the things I wouldn't have liked is a screen, for some reason it is not such a clear image as I expected, it will be good in the future to be able to increase the screen Hertz.

For the games not tested yet :)
