Completely changing my review. I had a lot of problems with how slow it is on line, but it turns out to be my router not being new enough to deal with this new and fast laptop. I couldn't understand why my other laptops were performing well and this one was so slow, but it was my own ignorance, not the fault of the computer. This seller is VERY supportive. The service has been amazing all along. He responds immediately and is always patient. I am sorry I gave an initial negative review. It is a little odd to have a bigger keyboard (that goes with a bigger laptop), so I sometimes click on wrong keys that make the computer do bad things. But this is not the computer's fault. It is mine.

Having owned this laptop for about 4 months now has made me realize how much faster this unit is than the dual core DV7 that I "retired". I used to think that my old LT was fast, but this one runs circles around it. And if that wasn't enough, since I only paid about $800 for mine, I cracked it and added 8 more GB of RAM (16 Gb total now) and a second 1TB HDD that is used for automatic backups. So for less than $1100, I have a screaming demon of a laptop. Love it!

I had eagerly been awaiting the new Mid-2012 MacBook Pro upgrade primarily because of the move to the new Intel processor, "Ivy Bridge." The 2.9GHz Intel Core i7 dual-core processor just makes this MacBook Pro fly. And it runs much cooler than its predecessors. I had my laptop running while on my lap for a couple hours and the bottom case was barely warm. Fan noise was not noticeable whatsoever. To be honest, I don't even know if the fan was operating or not, it was that quiet.

The aluminum unibody case has remained pretty much unchanged for several years. In fact, my previous MacBook Pro, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM has the identical case that this new laptop has... it is designated as Model No: A1278 if you look at the bottom of the laptop case.

What Apple threw into the mix, which made my decision of which new Apple laptop to purchase more difficult, was the addition of the Retina Display MacBook. Initially I was tormented with making the correct decision of which computer to purchase. After I weighed the differences and factored in the cost, it became clear to me that for my use, the 13" MacBook Pro was the way to go rather than an Air or Retina Display MacBook Pro. Here are my reasons...

-The Retina Display MacBook lacks an optical drive. For me, that was a critical feature as I am a Mobile DJ and still rip a lot of CD's to my computer. I did not want to have to carry around an external optical drive so having the internal optical drive on the new MacBook Pro was key.

-The Retina Display MacBook does not have an Ethernet port. Again, this won't affect all people, but for me it was an essential feature that I use all the time. I wasn't ready to give up my dedicated ethernet connectivity port.

-The Retina Display MacBook was priced out of my comfort zone. It's a phenomenal computer but I just could not justify the price.

-The Air doesn't offer the disk space that I need nor the right combination of ports.

Honestly, the display on the 13.3" MacBook Pro is gorgeous. I can see where a photographer might enjoy the Retina Display, but for me, the 1280x800 resolution of the screen on this laptop is perfect. The display is bright, very bright, sharp and has excellent viewing from side to side. I'm a little conflicted with the glossy screen, but I think I have grudgingly accepted it for the most part. In most situations I find it nicer than a glare-free screen. For some situations however, it is not the best because of the reflections on the screen of surrounding lights and such. You must remember that while reducing glare on a screen might make it easier to view in certain situations by reducing reflections of light and surroundings, by its nature the anti-glare will reduce sharpness of the screen image. By having the glossy screen you have an amazingly bright, clear and sharp image that is just beautiful to view.

I had also considered getting an early 2012 refurbished MacBook Pro. That was my second-best option. But for the small difference in price, I would not have gotten USB 3.0 ports and that was important to me, as well as getting Thunderbolt. Admittedly, there are not yet many peripherals that utilize Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 but that is certainly going to change quite rapidly. USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 and offers throughput of up to 5Gbps. Thunderbolt is even faster and allows daisy-chaining of monitors and other devices. This new MacBook Pro also has an upgraded facetime camera. It is now 720p HD and that's pretty awesome.

Firewire 800 is still included on this MacBook Pro. Undoubtedly, Firewire is getting towards the end of its lifespan but many videographers are still using video cameras that use Firewire and I also have external hard drives using firewire, so this is still useful for me.

The newly added Tunderbolt port is also useable as a mini-display port and you can easily obtain adapters to enable you to hook up to DVI, VAG and HDMI. I do miss not having a dedicated HDMI port, but at least it is possible to get an adapter to fill that need.

The Lion and soon to be released Mountain Lion operating system has garnered a lot of comments both positive and negative. Personally I have not experienced any issues with Lion. The integration with iCloud is fantastic and allows me to keep my contacts, address book, bookmarks all in sync across all my devices (iMac, iPhone, iPod Touch and another MacBook Pro.)

The iLife suite of applicatons included with the computer are excellent. iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are tightly integrated and work well. There is room for improvement, to be sure, but I use iPhoto and iMovie all the time and it is an amazingly capable duo.

If you're considering a MacBook Pro for the first time and are coming from the PC world, welcome. You will have a little adjusting to do but it's really easy and you will probably be impressed with how straightforward the operating system is. It just works. I can't even think of when I had a crash or freeze.

I've not yet reached the 7-hours mark for battery life, but still, I've been getting at least 5 hours plus so no complaints.

If you are considering the new MacBook Pro and you're already a Mac user then you will welcome the addition of a much faster processor, the addition of Thunderbolt and USB 3.0.

I am really liking my new MacBook Pro and with 8GB of RAM, and the new i7 Processor running at 2.9GHZ (turbo-boost to 3.6GHz) you will be very happy with the performance.

Regarding the 8GB RAM memory maximum for this MacBook Pro, it is interesting to note that Crucial sells a 16GB RAM kit for this particular model. Despite this, Apple does not acknowledge that the computer will accept 16GB of RAM. I called Apple Technical Support to ask about this and I was told that even though the computer may accept 16GB of RAM and seem to run without any problems with 16GB of RAM, the full amount of RAM may not actually be used by the MacBook Pro. It's kind of hard to say what the implications are of adding 16GB of RAM when Apple says the maximum is 8GB for this model. What will happen though is if you have any issues with the computer and Apple discovers that you've put 16GB of RAM in it, you could be denied service under the warranty. So I guess I'd be happy with 8GB of RAM until this issue gets more clarification, either by benchmark tests that show an improvement in performance or a firmware update or some acknowledgment from Apple approving the option of 16GB of RAM. I"d like to think that if Apple wanted to make as much money as possible that they would offer this computer with an 16GB option. Since they don't, there must be a technical reason why.

I've been using a protective case for my MacBook Pro and I recommend it. It's priced very fairly, comes in a variety of colors and has worked really well for me. UPDATE: July 1, 2012 I've been reading reports online about the fact that the new Retina Display MacBook Pro has pushed the graphics handling capabilities of the computer to the max. This has resulted in some problems that are only just beginning to manifest themselves, such as sluggish screen draw in some situations, slow frame rates in other situations and image retention issues.

In other words, by pushing the limits, as Apple frequently does (and I'm not suggesting that that's a bad thing) early adopters are paying the price. So I'm feeling even better about choosing this particular model rather than spending significantly more for the Retina Display MacBook Pro and having to deal with the first generation issues.

UPDATE: July 5, 2012 Note to PC users considering the switch to a Mac. Don't be intimidated to switch. Mac OSX is a fantastic operating system and not difficult to learn at all. But there are definitely some subtle differences between the PC and Mac user interface and experience. I would strongly suggest getting a good book such as Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Lion Edition. It's an excellent overview of what you'll need to know regarding the Mac experience and the Lion operating system. I use both Windows 7 and Mac OSX and own both a PC laptop and Mac laptop and desktop machines. I consider Macs to be my primary computer because of my familiarity with them and their ease of use. However, a helpful book will ease your transition and eliminate the guesswork.

UPDATE: August 24, 2012 I've upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion, 10.8, and have been running it for about 2 weeks. I have not noticed any issues and the upgrade went very smoothly. Some of the new features are great. I particularly like the dictation feature that lets you speak while in any application that accepts text input and the MBP will automatically and accurately convert your speech to text. The new way that messages are handled is very similar to IOS and I like it. Some users are reporting less battery life but I have not noticed any degradation in battery life on my comptuer.

This is not my first Mac computer, and certainly will not be my last. Before I begin, I will say that I am not like a good percentage of the people that will end up writing a review on this computer I am not an Apple fanboy. I have owned many PC computers as well, and like them too. I currently own a Lenovo laptop as well as my new MacBook Pro, and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

To start with the strengths:

1. OSX Lion is a great performer..extremely fast and reliable. I have it installed on my iMac desktop computer as well and love it. Not to mention this comes with a free upgrade to Mountain Lion, which is very nice.

2. Screen looks great. Even though it is not the Retina display you can get on the 15.4 inch model, the screen is fantastic. Very bright and crystal clear with excellent color.

3. Quietest laptop I have ever owned. Keeps quiet even when the computer is under a heavy load.

4. First computer I have owned with USB 3.0. I bought an external hard drive when I purchased this laptop as well so I could utilize the USB 3.0. I got the hard drive yesterday and transferred all of my files from my old laptop to the new hard drive so I could put them on my MacBook. It took about 1/5th of the time it did with USB 2.0.

5. My Lenovo laptop does not have an illuminated keyboard, so the keyboard on this laptop is a big plus in my opinion. Excellent for people that like to work or surf the web while their significant other is sleeping.

6. The trackpad can't even compare it to any trackpad I have seen on any other laptop computer.

7. Excellent battery life while being a very fast performer. It definitely has the best of both worlds. I average about 6 hours on a charge. My Lenovo (with similar graphics, processor, etc. and same use) only lasts about 4 or 5 hours on a full charge.

8. Typical Apple simplistic styling. I love the look of the Apple products. Simple and clean.

9. Many, many more...but those are the most notable ones to me.

Now, for the weaknesses.

1. The only thing I dislike about this laptop are the rubber pads found on the bottom of the computer for grip. They may get softer and more sticky as time goes by, but right now they are far from that. The pads on the bottom of my Lenovo are definitely much better and don't allow the computer to slide around while I am using the computer on a glass topped desk.

2. Price it's a bit pricey for the performance you get, but the added perks of Mac OSX and the durability and support of Apple products makes up for it. For the same price, you can get a PC with more memory, larger hard drive, better graphics, and a faster processor, but then you remember you're running Windows 7, which isn't nearly as well built as Mac OSX.

In conclusion this is a great laptop. Although it is a little pricey, it is well worth the extra money. So far, the only issue I have with it (rubber pads) is a very small problem that does not change how this laptop performs in any way.

If you are thinking about getting a MacBook Pro laptop but do not want to spend a huge amount of money for one, this is definitely the way to go. It may be considered the "base model" MacBook Pro, but it still an excellent computer. The size and battery life of this computer makes it excellent for people that need a laptop that is very mobile. Between work and college classes, I needed a lightweight yet durable computer and this definitely fits that criteria.

I used to be a die hard windows fan. I was always bashing OSx for the usual things (too expensive, too dumb, et cetera, et cetera), and I never really gave it a chance. Windows 7 was my OS of choice from the day it came out, and I used it on many different computers with (or at least what I thought then) good results. It's certainly not a bad OS but...

This past holiday season, I got an Asus tablet PC. I wanted to love it, I really did. I gave it a five star review here on Amazon, and I tried my very hardest to use it to it's fullest potential. It was working fine for a while, until I tried the Windows 8 beta. It was all down-hill from there. Viruses, problems (beyond those that should be in a beta, and a general ugliness drove me absolutely insane, and I decided to move away from Windows, at least temporarily. I bought a Chromebook, and while I absolutely love it and highly recommend it, I wanted more out a computer than it offered.

So, nearly on a whim, I bought a Mac. I have never made a better tech decision. Literally everything about it is better than any computer I've ever used, from the operating system to the hardware.

People typically say that the real reason they love Macs and other Apple products is because of the build quality. While the build quality on this computer is INSANELY good (I feel bad hauling it around with me; I feel like it should be in an art museum), I really think it's the software that makes this a standout computer and computing experience. I've had absolutely zero backround in OSx up until now, and already I am easily finding my way around this computer. Granted, I've had a good backround in Linux and OSx is similar, but the fact that I'm easily navigating a brand new operating system after only one day is quite the contrast from Windows, now that I can look at it objectively. OSx Lion is wonderful. The multi-touch gestures and the multi-touch mouse itself are immensely helpful, and it's because of features like these that make it clear to me that it's almost necessary for a company to make the hardware for a product if they're making the software as well. Everything works extremely well together.

Like I said, the included apps put Windows to shame. With the exception of Outlook (which I personally hate, but my Mom has a Mac and can't stand the contacts App and uses Outlook), I can't think of a single, rational person who would pick Windows software over Apple software when it comes to things like media, photo/video editing, and email. To be perfectly honest, it's ridiculous how well all this stuff works. I downloaded the iWorks office suite (which is not free, though significantly cheaper than Microsoft Office), and they also work like a charm. I really don't create a whole lot of spreadsheets or slide shows so I can't guarantee a qualified opinion on Numbers (Excel) or Keynote (PowerPoint), but the Pages app is lightyears ahead of Microsoft Word. I also downloaded Logic Pro 9 (an music synthesizer/recording studio app) after having used it with friends a few months back, and have spent hours digging into another fantastic piece of Mac Software, and I can say for a fact that it is truly unparalleled in the Windows world.

The actual hardware internals of the computer are amazing. The new Ivy Bridge processors whip through anything I can throw at them, and the 8 gb of fast (1600 mhz) ram makes multi-tasking a breeze. The nVidia graphics card, while not a show-stopper, is completely adequate for some heavy-duty video editing in something like Final Cut or Photo Shop (though I haven't used Photo Shop in about a year now, so I'm not COMPLETELY sure about the latter of the two statements), or gaming (whether you dual-boot or pick one of the games from the increasingly impressive OSx catalogue). The speakers, while not mind-blowing, are much better than what I'm used to from integrated laptop speakers, and the screen, even though I opted for the non-HD screen, is very good; colors are bright and saturated, the pixel density is more than satisfactory, and the viewing angles are some of the best I've ever seen. Battery life is as good as advertised, and the computer starts and runs much more quickly than I'm used to, especially considering that this computer doesn't have flash storage.

I haven't run into a single thing I would change about this computer up to this point. I love the software, I love the hardware, and I love my decision. If you're in the market for an exceptional, powerful notebook, look no further. I can't recommend this computer highly enough.

Edit: While the great things that I mentioned about OSx are all still completely viable and even after several weeks (months, perhaps?) of heavy usage I haven't experienced any problems. Mountain Lion is a great update and even though I don't own an iPhone or an iPad (I'm more of an android guy), I still like almost all of the additions it brings to OSx.

However, I have since installed Windows. Bootcamp is a marvelous program, and in about 20 minutes I had Windows 7 working great on my computer. All the drivers were installed and performance was great. Once I actually started playing games though, several design flaw were suddenly extremely apparent to me, and they were apparent in a very bad way.

I'm not sure if Windows is just a more demanding operating system or if a fan driver was left out of my Bootcamp install, but the cooling of this computer when doing ANYTHING intensive under Windows is absolutely atrocious. The unibody design is gorgeous. It's revolutionary, it's stylish, it's classy, and it has major practical issues. The vents are hidden under the hinges of the screen, and anything but the most perfect of screen angles will block off much of the fans output. Even with the fans blowing full blast at nearly all times while running Windows, the computer gets extremely hot during usage. I use a laptop as a literal "lap" top computer frequently. This works fine under OSx; it's impossible under Windows. The bottom of the computer gets painfully hot during heavy usage (to the point where I literally can't touch it for more than a few seconds), and the metal area (ironically) around the "wasd" keys gets extremely hot as well. I've had the computer completely overheat three times only in the past two weeks. Since I only play online games, this isn't a real issue, but I can't imagine what would happen were someone actually doing something important on a Windows partition and have the computer overheat and shut down. Even with good ventilation (meaning smooth granite surfaces and a laptop stand specifically designed to enhance ventilation), there is no avoiding an extremely hot computer and constantly whirring fans.

Long story short, I'm very glad they improved the fan design in the Retina Display Macbooks, because it is, frankly, very, very poor here.

I'm conflicted on whether I should change my overall rating of the computer though. Even though Macs are equipped (through Bootcamp) to run Windows, they weren't designed to do so, and I certainly haven't had a single issue while running (the far superior) OSx. Considering the fact that I should be basing my opinion of the product on its own merits and not on those of a competing product, I don't think I will change my overall scoring. I do think it is prudent to add, however, that cooling while running Windows 7 is terrible. If you NEED Windows, stick with a Windows computer. They will most likely handle Windows better than this one will.

this review is about my personal honest experience, i am not a computer wizard.

like most of you, i had a hard time thinking which one to buy, an air or a pro. what i did is purchased the two and see which one will better suit my needs and send back the one that I won't like. so I went at my local best buy and did so. after using both products for 14days, here are my thoughts.

the macbook air looks very beautiful on the outside. it's so thin and light and can be used anywhere like a tablet. to sum things up, the MB air is more of a fashion statement than a work horse. is it faster than a pro? yes only by 10-15secs during start up. the audio quality sounds thin but loud. the pro has a deeper sound. air has higher resolution but the fonts are small. what I hate about it is the screen display color. macbook pro by far has more vivid colors and if you love to watch netflix and hd videos like me, the pro is a better choice. i like the design of the air but i'm sorry to say that it is more like a toy than a real life laptop. if you have a main computer, the air is a very good addition but if you only need an all in one computer like me to take with you, store data, watch videos, do picture and video editing and plan to use for a very long time, then the macbook pro is a better choice and for me is more sturdy. one reviewer says that the air has better screen display but I don't agree with that because i am an amateur photographer and im pretty sure i know which has the better display. in the long run you will be needing that dvd drive, the storage and ram that you can customize, the ethernet and ports that are already built in and most of all the screen display. the macbook pro still looks stunningly beautiful and is a more capable laptop. even the keyboard is better to type on. the air is super light weight but the pro still is light. we still need to use our muscles sometimes. battery life are identical 5-6 hrs.

I got more from my money on the pro and it is a better choice for me that's why I kept it and sent the air back for a refund. again this is just my personal honest opinion.

I purchased the newly updated 13" MacBook Pro and the newly updated 13" MacBook Air the day they were announced at WWDC and released for sale in June 2012. (My 13" MacBook Pro is the 2.9 GHz i7 model, and my MacBook Air is factory upgraded to a 2.0 GHz i7 processor and 8GB RAM.)

After using the two machines side-by-side for a couple weeks now, I can say that the MacBook Air outperforms the MacBook Pro in almost every task and in terms of overall speed and performance. Compared with the newly refreshed and updated Air, the new MacBook Pro is frankly a significant disappointment, and I've pretty much stopped using it altogether in favor of the faster Air. Despite the Air's slower CPU clock speed, it performs faster than the Pro in actual tasks due to the performance boost afforded by it's SSD hard drive. The SSD drive on the MacBook Air makes an enormous difference in everything from casual web browsing to video editing.

If you're debating which 13" MacBook to buy, the 13" MacBook Air or the 13" MacBook Pro, here's a side-by-side comparison...

Speed and Performance: Advantage MacBook Air

Apart from the hard drives and port configurations, the technology inside the machines is virtually identical in both the newly refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Both Pros and Airs come with either i5 or i7 Intel "Ivy Bridge" processors, Intel HD Graphics 4000, USB 3.0, and lightning-fast Thunderbolt ports. While the MacBook Air models are at a disadvantage to the MacBook Pro models in terms of CPU clock speeds, any performance disadvantage from the processor speed is more than made up for by the lightning fast performance of the Air's SSD hard drive, which Apple markets as "Flash" storage. In everyday tasks from gaming to web browsing to watching Flash movies and editing video, the MacBook Air is faster significantly faster in virtually every task. The Air boots up in less than 12 seconds while the Pro takes upwards of one minute.

Screen: Advantage MacBook Air

If you've never used a MacBook Air, much less the new Retina display 15" MacBook Pro, then you won't notice just how outdated the MacBook pro's screen is. However, once you get used to the super high resolution 1440 x 900 LED display on the MacBook Air, the 1280 x 800 back-lit LED display on the MacBook Pro looks downright grainy and primitive. Simply put, once you get used to a higher resolution display, the 1280 x 800 display on the 13" MacBook Pro just isn't acceptable. Even for simple tasks like email or word processing where you wouldn't think the resolution would matter, the graphics look grainy and pixelated, which just isn't acceptable for a pro-level laptop in 2012.

Upgradability: Advantage MacBook Pro

The Pro's only major advantage over the Air comes in terms of the flexibility of its hardware, ease of repair, and upgradability. With only a screw driver and about 10 minutes of your time, you can add more memory to the Pro, replace the hard drive, and even add a second hard drive in place of the optical disc drive. The Air, on the other hand, is stuck in the configuration you purchase it in except that you can opt to replace the SSD "Flash" hard drive with a higher capacity SSD drive.

Design, Weight, Portability, Battery Life, and Form Factor: Advantage MacBook Air

The MacBook Air is the most beautiful computer ever produced by man, and the MacBook Pro looks like it's older, pudgy relative. The Air's aluminum case is impeccably designed, almost tailored to accommodate the necessary internal components, while maintaining practical ergonomics. It's an incredibly thin, svelte, sexy little notebook. The MacBook Air's aluminum case seems sturdy and durable, and its mechanics are very similar to the time-test unibody construction of the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is a bit of a dinosaur in its bulky circa 2006 unibody. The Pro is heavier than a half gallon of milk at 4.5 lbs, while the MacBook Air weighs in at less than 2.9 lbs. Battery life is roughly even on both machines at anywhere from 4 to 7 hours depending on workload and settings.

Summary Judgement: Buy the MacBook Air (or opt for the new 15" Retina display MacBook Pro)

Simply put, the guts of the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro are basically the same, but the Air's SSD hard drive gives it a tremendously significant boost in performance. Sadly, the MacBook Pro's 5400-rpm hard drive leaves the machine unable to capitalize on the newest, most expensive Intel "Ivy Bridge" i5 and i7 processors that you're paying a $300 premium for in the newly updated Pros. If you are going to buy a Pro, invest the extra money and get it upgraded with a SSD hard drive and get an extra external hard drive if you need additional cheap storage space for multimedia files. When you also consider the superior display, lighter weight, increased portability, and lower price of the MacBook Air, it's hard to find a reason to justify purchasing the current 13" MacBook Pro, which to me looks like a dinosaur rapidly headed for extinction.

I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

I absolutely LOVE this computer! It has everything you need, in a small, compact machine. It's a Mac, so you know you're getting quality, the start up time is extremely fast, and it does everything a similar-looking 13" Macbook does without you having to pay $1000 for a new computer. This iBook G4 works just as well, and if you're looking for a good, small computer, this is the one for you! The only complaint I do have is that the CD-drive doesn't work (but it's probably an issue on just my machine). Overall, a great buy!

For some reason I found myself drawn to this laptop. It met my computer specifications that I had on my search. Correct graphics card, fast, and light. I love this laptop! The graphics are extremely clear. There is nothing wrong with the sound. It sounds like sound would on any laptop. I don't use the track pad so I don't know how well it works or doesn't work. Colors are great. I only address these issues because people complained about them. I haven't had any problems with my laptop thus far. I'm very happy with my purchase! I bought this laptop mainly for the IPS monitor -I am a professional photographer and I needed a travel computer for when I cannot edit at home. I wanted a computer where my photos would not look completely different because we all know how unreliable editing on a laptop can be. I have owned this laptop for several months right now, and overall I am extremely happy. When you tilt the screen up and down, the color and brightness does not change one bit, which is fabulous for editing. I love the multi-touch trackpad -I can't go back to using older trackpads after this laptop. This laptop is lightning fast, sleek and thin, and has a quality display that can't be beat. I've owned this laptop for more than a year and even now it's hard to find such a well built and lightweight one.The matte-screen is absolutely stunning crisp and clear (1920 x 1080). 2 months after I bought it, replaced the hard drive with a solid state 256gb OCZ Octane, installed customized bios that boost the Nvidia 640M LE performance by almost 50%. I was able to play Battlefield 2 and other 3d intensive games in full hd without any issues! The keyboard is very well built and perfect for typing. On the third month replaced Win 7 with Windows 8. There were some missing drivers in the beginning but Sony quickly released the drivers for the new OS. Later on Synaptics released their touchpad driver with all swiping gestures for Windows 8 great stuff(no need for touch screen :)) The battery life is about 3 1/2 4 hours on average (with SSD!!!).

Almost forgot to mention the Magnesium Alloy used in this model. The material is lightweight, very sturdy, and after more than a year of daily use, there are no noticeable scratches!!

The sound quality is mediocre; great HD cam; backlit keyboard; Stamina Speed button (great for controlling the performance when needed); USB 3.0 which can charge usb device (cell phone) even when the laptop is off.

One of the greatest features design-wise is the location of the exhaust fan. It's right in the middle of the laptop, which allows prolonged lap-typing without any discomfort (very quiet as well).

The computer I received was in excellent working condition. Set up was quick and straight forward.

However, I'm a little old school when it comes to the mouse function. The on board mouse (track pad) is nice with it multi-function, however when typing it becomes an issue as my palms depress the pad at times and the cursor jumps. Additionally track pad is not centered on keyboard, so my hands do not go to home keys automatically. I'm always having to adjust my position to the home keys. Been a couple of months and still having to adjust. I ended up turning it off to eliminate the problem. It's quick to boot, but then again it's new, so maybe you'll want to check back in a year or two.

Pro's

Fast boot, nice screen, easy to set up.

Very light a real plus.

Con's

Track pad not centered on home keys.

Pressure from palms activate track pad, and cursor jumps. (Had to turn track pad off to get around this)

Fingers do not automatically go to home keys even after months of use.

USB ports interfere with mouse operation. But, this seems to be a problem with most laptops these days.

Would I recommend it to a friend? That is the question!

I Purchased this for my wife at Staples and she loves it. We paid only $479 and you will not find anything near this Laptop even close to that price. It offers so much, an updated I3-Core 370 processor, 500 GB HDD, 4 GB Memory and more. Compare it to anything else and it is a no brainer. I have noticed that all of the local stores have it now as a promo with these fetures and they fluxuate each week in price from $599 down to $499 depending on the store ad's. Look at your circulers people. Dont get fooled by the other G72's out there for over $600 that have the the low end processors and less HDD and Memory (Walmart etc. for the low end slower model) This is a great deal. My only complaint is the new G72s and G62s have adopted the new mouse pad which takes a little getting used to, but believe me you get used to it within a week. Very Happy with this. Check it out. You will love it. Staples, Office Depot, PC Richards all offer it and every week, they alternate from $599 and lower but each store will allow the price of the other one if you bring in the circular. i bought this laptop knowing that it wasnt gonna be the best at games... i actually get pretty good graphics out of this laptop which has a built in (integrated) intel hd video. it's fast, even though it's got an i3 dual core, it performs very well. the keyboard layout is interesting, and to me, it doesnt really matter. i kinda do like it since the keyboard expands to a 10 key numberpad and the design of the laptop itself is simple. no glossy material to leave your fingerprints (if you're a thief, this may be for you! no, only kidding). anyway, the computer runs good, hardly runs hot...

processor can handle my programs well whether its games, surfing the web, listening to music, or watching a movie, its great. i love that it doesnt really get hot after hours of running or left on my bed overnight. it's actually almost always on my bed and it runs perfectly fine.

built in speakers are nice, they are altec lansing, not the beats but the built in speakers work well. i personally have a pair of altec lansing 2.1 speakers and those perform better than the built in speakers, but that's a no brainer.

i think this is a great laptop, but do your due diligence before you buy to make sure this is what you want! go to a store like fry's or best buy or staples..

I purchased this laptop at Staples on Black Friday for $499. Considering everything this is equipped with, 4GB ram, 500GB hard disk AND an HDMI output for my big screen TV. You just simply can't beat the configuration for the money. The only negatives are that both the touch pad and keyboard get some taking used to. The touch pad is hidden in the palm rest and is textured. It requires some practice to get the right touch. The keyboard is slightly offset to the left to accommodate the number pad. Battery life is about 2 2.5 hrs of normal usage -not great but usable. If you can find it for the same price, get it!

Bought this laptop 13.5mos ago for my wife for Christmas. She LOVED it! It was great.....for 13.5mos. Now, less than 2mos out of warranty, it has experienced a complete failure. Appears to be either motherboard or power supply. Extremely disappointed in this HP. The laptop if fine runs fast, great display. Hate the bloatware, but who doesn't.

Here's the problem whatever idiot that designed the mouse interface should be forced to use it as his/her only mouse for the next ten years. It's too far to the left (indicating the idiot was a southpaw!) so it's comfortable to operate when the laptop is about a foot to your right. Now you can't see the monitor. The buttons are integrated into the deck, so unless you're a weightlifter, it's gonna be a challenge to push the buttons. You won't notice it till you own the stupid thing.

Buy yourself a real mouse. Yes, it's a pain in my keister EVERY time I use my laptop. But it works. There's a place in hell for the engineer of this thing, and the only thing in his cell is this laptop's user interface.

This computer was a great purchase. I love the size, design, and speed of this model. The only thing I would change is the keypad, the buttons seem to have a little blur to them if you look closely, but my other Dell had the same keys.

I have bought Dells for over 20 years. My last Dell laptop has been in use for 12 years without any problems. The Dell before that is still in the house as a backup for 16 years. So when I broke down and bought my 10th grade daughter her first laptop this year for Christmas the choice was not which brand but which Dell. I decided on the 14R because it was on sale with the i3 processor, the 6GB memory and the large harddrive. She opens it up on Christmas morning and it crashed the first three times she turned it on. I guess Dell has replaced the "blue screen of death" with a black screen of death. Check disk errors, can't find the OS, and the charger sent with the unit is not capable of charging the battery to its full capacity. The unit will slow accordingly. SLOWER because the charger won't charge the battery. Seriously? I was able to salvage Christmas by at least getting it running and I replaced the cover with the pink top, but I was pissed that not only had I blown it for Christmas but Dell had let me down, BIG TIME.

I agonized for weeks before finally purchasing this laptop. In the end I decided what I really needed was a desktop replacement. A powerful, capable machine that could replace my aging tower and still be a laptop. In that I was not disappointed.

The good

This machine is quick! Video plays flawlessly, I am able to convert movies from one format to another averaging 10 minutes per 1.5 hour movie. My old tower would take 2 hours.

The screen is bright and clear. The keyboard lights up nicely and the sound is pretty darned good. Build quality is good, no flex to it even if you're Mr. Universe and manage to heft it by a single corner.

I like the fast wireless built in to the laptop and its easy to switch between wireless connections.

The so so

This notebook does heat up and grows uncomfortably warm on the legs if you are lounging around with it. The fan is on most of the time and you can hear it humming away although I wouldn't call it annoying.

Windows 8 takes some getting used to. The touch pad is only partially effective at gesture recognition and will leave you disappointed half the time. I guess I don't really get the purpose of the live tiles.. I have reverted to using the desktop mode almost exclusively. I probably won't bother with the hassle of downgrading to windows 7.

The bad

I really, really dislike the battery pack that came with this machine. In order to fit more oomph into it, there is a 1-inch tall ridge that runs for most of its length, functioning as a bit of a kickstand for the laptop so its tilted a bit towards you. While this is fine when its on a table, try putting it on your lap and that ridge quickly digs in and becomes uncomfortable. I am forced to keep my legs well apart so I catch the edges where the bottom is still flat which is also uncomfortable.

I also experienced a weird power pop up that kept coming up every 15 seconds warning me about my power supply. In the end I had to find the utility responsible and delete it from the HD before this warning would go away.

Fnally, perhaps due to some software I have on the laptop, perhaps due to something else, when I display and file open/save dialog, the machine frequently pauses for 10-15 seconds during which time the dialog is frozen. Very annoying for something this fast to be doing this so frequently.

I consider this is a nice buy. It has all you want from a high performance laptop for a reasonable price compared for a Macbook Pro or something else.

At the first time i was wondering if this machine has softbuttons to have quick access to volume, wifi, bluetooth and others, I searched over the internet with no luck. So I had to wait to receive the laptop and finding this out by myself. For my surprise I found the F keys has this option as primary option and if you want to use the keys as F's you have to press Alt+F* as a very nice found.

The laptop is very quiet, materials are good considering I hate black laptops with easy finger printing. For 16mb you have to challenge yourself and the computer to use that much of memory. I bought this one to edit photos in Lightroom and Photoshop, while I listen music and stream movies. I can consider I have all these services run with no issues. So happy for that.

Windows 8? no issues found at this moment.

When I was about to purchase this Laptop, I did what everybody does, and read reviews like crazy. I was very impressed with the specs but other customer reviews had me in doubt.

I decided to go with my knowledge of the specs and purchase the laptop regardless of issues stated by others.

Firstly I just want to touch on some of the issues that other 'reviewers' posted along with their lower star rating... These claims made by others created hesitations in my mind but was never experienced after my purchase.

(1) Fan Noise:

The fan comes on pushing the slightly warm air out of the left side vents of the laptop.

The noise that someone mentioned simply cannot be heard. Rather a very light, gentle humming.

Feeling the light movement of air from these vents is comforting to me, know that heat is escaping.

In some other laptops, you can't feel air movement anywhere around the pc making you wonder about the internal cooling.

This laptop is very efficient in keeping the powerful i7 processor cool on its own without the need for a cooling pad.

The fan is effective and efficient; just ensure that with time, you try to keep the vents clear from dust. This will ensure that the heat is escaping efficiently.

If dust or any other material/substances are blocking the vents the heat will not escape and the fan will increase in speed. This increase in speed will obviously cause the fan to sound louder since it will be working harder to get the heat out.

(2) Heating:

Like I said before, the fan effective and efficiently remove the unwanted heat and keep the body of the laptop cool.

So far I never experienced any overheating of the laptop, used on a bed, used on a sofa, used on a table, used on my lap.

Once the vents are clear and not blocked by anything, the laptop will cool itself down effectively.

(3) 1 inch Ridge underneath laptop:

Other basic laptop designs have a base that lies flat onto whatever surface it is placed on.

Surprisingly enough these laptop designers put vents here (on the underneath) for heat to escape, but since the base of the laptop is pressed flat onto the surface it is placed on, then the heat gets trapped inside and you are then required to buy a 'cooling pad' to push cool air in these otherwise blocked vents.

But with this HP ENVY, the battery is designed is such a way that it has a ridge on the underneath.

This 'ridge' keeps the base tilted off the surface that it is placed on allowing air to pass freely keeping the system cool.

The underside of this laptop has a Beats Audio Subwoofer. Since the 'ridge' keeps the rear of the laptop up, the bass sound from the subwoofer is echoed effectively of the surface that the laptop is place on. This creates a cleaner, clearer sound as compared to other flat based laptops.

The tilt also positions the keyboard at a comfortable angle for your typing use and gives a clear view of the keyboard while it rests on a flat surface.

Since this ridge is only on the battery, it is not designed 'end to end' on the laptop. Rather it is positioned to the middle-back of the underneath, creating a comfortable space for both of your legs to hold up the laptop while you sit and use it.

Therefore the 'ridge' in no way creates and un-comfortable experience while being used on your lap.

Since the position of ridge forces you to position you legs to the both sides to hold up the laptop, the under vents are kept clear keeping the system and your legs cool.

The design also keeps the subwoofer vents clear, maintaining the free flow of the bass sound from the subwoofer.

(4) Weight:

This laptop has specs that will give alot of desktop systems some real competition, with that in mind, making a powerful laptop like this mobile is very impressive.

In other words, the system is thin and relatively light when considering the features, power, speed and various capabilities.

(5) LED Backlit:

The Keyboard is Full LED Backlit and is switched on/off by a key on the keyboard.

It has a beautiful pure white glow around each key along with the individual numbers and letters being lit.

A key for the caps, muting and switching the wifi on and off also has a LED light on it to indicate on/off position.

(6) Finger Print Scanner:

So far I've had no issues with this feature as the scanner reads my finger with one pass.

I assume that if issues are present, it may be a manufacture problem.

(7) Heavy Gaming:

Although the Laptop has impressive specs, don't give it a bad rating because you can't run one of your high graphic games that can't even play on your desktop.

For persons looking for a gaming pc, my advice is to try getting a six core with a 3.5GHz and up processor on a desktop tower.

This laptop handled games with medium graphics very smoothly without ever freezing, overheating or requiring reboot.

(8) Windows 8:

Giving any PC a bad rating due to your experience with Windows 8 is very unfair and unfortunate.

To all the persons unsure about Windows 8, give it a try. No one could have been more sceptical that me about it, but after familiarizing myself a bit, I realized that it wasn't much different to Windows 7.

The usual desktop screen that would appear after booting, is now a screen with tiles that act like shortcuts to different apps and folders.

These 'live' tiles (shortcuts) can be modified to the user's liking, for example more shortcuts/apps can be 'pinned' to this screen just as shortcuts were 'pinned' to Windows 7 Task Bar.

You can even revert to the more common desktop screen via one of the tiles.

Since the Windows 8 requires fewer resources to operate, the graphics can be set to max to show all the 'fluid' display graphics on any pc without taking away from other app performance, so on this laptop it runs effortlessly.

It just requires some getting used to it does have some bugs and some aspects can be improved but so far I have no major issues with it.

(9) Wifi and Wireless Connections:

As expected, the wifi reception range is very impressive.

I am now picking up signals from neighbours that I never saw coming up with my old pc.

The wireless connections are made fast and effortless by this laptop, contrary to what others are saying in previous reviews.

After I am connected, I stay connected without any drops or interruptions, maintaining high signal strength.

(10) Shipping:

The shipping was very fast and was maintained in excellent packaging.

Laptop came in original HP Box in mint condition. I even got it with a 'Prime' offer, so fast shipping was free.

The above ten points I made were to clear up some bad reviews that was mentioned by others who might influence you to purchase something else and lose out on this monster machine.

I wanted to post this since they, some of the other reviewers, almost convinced me not to buy it.

But I took a chance based on the specs and decided to check everything out myself.

I wanted to confirm if the statements made by these (few) people, represented actual product flaws or just unfortunate manufacture defects.

I am in no way discrediting persons with genuine issues; I am just saying that their issues may me of some manufacture defect and not a product defect. Some people though tend to exaggerate minor personal dislikes and give poor ratings.

I'm providing a review based on actual experience compared to many other laptops that I had encountered in the past.

(11) The Body and Structure:

I must say that this pc in no way feels cheap. It is made of a metal frame with solid structure.

The keys feel soft and comfortable, pressed effortlessly.

The touch pad is large and positioned away from hands while typing.

I did find that the right and left click buttons on the touch pad are a bit 'clicky' and could have been designed like the keyboard buttons.

I especially like the feature of: Wifi, Sound, LED Backlit, Screen Brightness etc, all being controlled without the pressing of a function (fn) key. Just press the assigned key and the changes can be made.

The overall design is strong durable and well thought out, providing comfort of use, flow for heat and sound, etc. Even the HP logo on the top face of the laptop lights up, just as the apple in Macs light up.

(12) The Speakers and Sound:

There are five Beats Audio Speakers including the Beats Audio Subwoofer on the underneath.

The sound is truly immersive! You wouldn't believe that it is coming from a laptop.

There are two speakers on the monitor facing you, two speakers facing upward just above the keyboard, and the subwoofer below.

Tested it with the Blu-ray Transformers2 disc and I was blown away.

It's unlike any other laptop sound. You just have to experience it!

(13) The Upgrade to 16GB RAM:

When the RAM is upgraded to 16 GB, the Intel Rapid Start Technology is disabled.

I will go into a bit of explanation of this to help others understand what took place and the benefits.

There are two types of these 'Technologies' on this system:

(1) Intel Rapid Start Technology

(2) Intel Rapid Storage Technology (cache acceleration)

* What is Intel Rapid Start Technology?

Intel Rapid Start Technology is basically a feature that allows the PC to resume from `sleep mode' faster than usual.

* What causes the Upgrade of the RAM to affect the Intel Rapid Start Technology?

The laptop has 32GB of SSD (Solid State Disk).

8GB (from the 32GB) is used as a hibernation partition for fast resume via Intel Rapid START Technology.

The remainder of the SSD, about 22GB as displayed by Windows, is used as a cache to accelerate the 750 GB hard drive via Intel Rapid STORAGE technology (also called Intel Smart Response Technology).

NOTE: the 32BG is displayed as 30GB, just as the 750GB hard disk is displayed as 699GB, nothing new here.

Intel Rapid Start requires the hibernation partition (the 8GB) to be equal to or larger than the total amount of RAM installed. Since there was an upgrade to 16 GB of RAM, Intel Rapid Start will no longer work.

From the 32 GB SSD, Intel Rapid STORAGE Technology requires a minimum of 18.6 GB. Therefore the 8GB on from the SSD cannot be increased to the 16GB (equal to the RAM) for the Intel Rapid Start Technology to be enabled, because there will be less than the 18.6 GB that is required for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology to work.

Hence the reason why the Rapid Start Technology is disabled, but the Intel Rapid Storage Technology is still functional as normal.

If you want to have 16 GB of RAM and both Intel Rapid START and Rapid STORAGE technologies working, you'd need to replace the 32 GB SSD with something larger, like a 64 GB SSD for example. But this would require some detailed research before interfering inside there.

COMPUTER UPGRADE KING was the seller that I bought my HP ENVY with the 16 GB upgrade and the Intel Rapid Start Technology disabled.

I personally tested the system performance with this Intel Rapid Start Technology disabled, (that is; resuming the pc from sleep mode), and it resumed very fast regardless.

To me the upgrade to the 16GB of RAM from the original 8GB is a very big improvement in overall performance, hence the reason why I refer to this machine as a beast.

The benefits of upgrading the RAM to 16GB outweigh the benefits of the Intel Rapid Start Technology, since the computer resumes fast (from sleep) without it anyway.

I still got the 1 year warranty from HP for the original parts of the laptop, and COMPUTER UPGRADE KING gave me three (3) years warranty on their upgraded parts.

Conclusion:

The "ultimate gaming machine :) " arrived in the original box , shipping was very fast as always , but ofcourse it better be , because I had to pay 14$ for shiping.

The laptop had no deffects , no dead pixels( something I was very woried about).

I have been using it for about a week now and I can say that I am impressed . Very fast machine , I wish it came with an XP tho , but thats fixable :D

It does get very hot on the left side , but poor thing is just trying to get the heat out! No problems so far from that except some burned leg hair :D

What's intresting is tha price changeing. I bought it for 1279$ , a few days after I recieved it the price went down to 1150$ , and now it's 1380$ or so. You better time your purchuase or you might end up paying more for something that actualy costs less.

I recomend this product to anybody who is willing to pay that much for a laptop , I couldn't find a better deal.

I just bought this from a week ago. The $100 rebate is what motivated me to buy this particular one. The cost is $1,150 after the rebate. This is an excellent deal for the type of hardware loaded. I tried to create similarly configred laptops on Dell site and Sony site. The cost was usually over $1500 for the same type of hardware.

I am taking one star off due to three minor issues (1) weight, (2) bulk, and (3) no multi-touch touchpad. I believe Asus could have make this model (15.6" screen) smaller and lighter and put on a multip-touch touchpad. One of the main reasons that I like Asus is its multi-touch touchpad. I had no idea this model does not come with one until I received it. I was somewhat disappointed and thought about returning it a couple of times. But now, I think I can live without a multi-touch touchapd because its touchpad feels quite solid and high quality.

I am no gamer and I may never play any games with it. But, I need a fast CPU (i7 720 QM) that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I need generous amount of RAM (6 GB). BTW, both the BIOS and CPU-Z reported that it has the 1333 MHz RAM instead the advertized 1066 MHz RAM. I believe this may be arbitrary depending on the supply and cost of RAM at the time of manufacturing. I also need a fast hard drive (7200 RPM). I also want high resolution (1920x1080) to see more content on the screen.

I know its supposedly game-grade graphics capability will go to waste for the way I use it. But it has everything else I want. So, I think I can live with its somewhat cheesy Republic of Gamers deco/logo/lighting on the lid.

Well capable machine indeed, I've played Crysis, Battlefield III, Assassin's Creed Revelation and others with no problems, I also have done some 3D rendering with quite a good performance.

Illuminated chiclet keyboard is a plus specially in poorly lit areas, some people would love having a numpad as well.

Screen is beautiful (if you're looking at the right angle!)

Keyboard: Well, if you're a gamer (and you ought to be if you're buying a machine like that!) speed is important, and usually if you lose your contact to the arrow buttons it's easy to get back to them on any other keyboard, since usually there's an empty space around the arrow keys in standard keyboards, unfortunately not this one! I mean why ASUS?! why have you chose a keyboard where the arrow buttons for some unknown reason is quite embedded around the rest of the keyboard keys??! now if you're navigating in game menus, or using the arrows in even some word processor you have to actually look to the keyboard to locate them with your eyes. that wasn't a smart choice of the keyboard layout -period-.

It gets HOT! I wouldn't say this is a major con, if you're a gamer you want your machine to perform and you'd expect some heat to get out of it. I'd strongly suggest buying a cooler along with it.

I don't particularly like having the power socket right beside the network socket, they get in the way of each other when you have one plugged and you want to plug the other.

Screen: the vertical viewing angle (screen tilt) is a major setback for me, if you haven't aligned your screen angle at its best you might be missing some wonderful details in the game, or have an overall 'darker' view. Vertical viewing angle should have been worked on before releasing this strong machine.

Sound: Sometimes the speakers aren't loud enough, I think the sound card is capable though as it becomes really loud if you're using headphones. I had a Toshiba Qosmio before and never had this problem. ASUS should have invested a little bit more in the speakers area as well.

Came from a Toshiba Satellite I had bought from BestBuy. I returned that for $693.03 as this was my replacement. That had an integrated 4200 mobility and a dual core AMD Phenom II. You can't even play games on that or watch 1080p video smoothly. The screen is 1600x900 and was amazing looking but this 1920x1080 is far better. I can even play games with 60 fps if I'm not greedy with graphics. I'm in the process of switching out this CPU from a 720QM to an 820QM. I only spent up to 10 dollars for the switch. I got an 820QM ES for the price I sold the 720QM. In the future I see I will need the 5870 Mobility. It's far better than the 360M. The watts of my laptop is only 120W max. I can't go higher than the 5870 because the watts would exceed 120W. That Toshiba only had 4GB of ram this has 6GB and is way faster and way more bandwidth. It's also 4 core and 8 thread. Clock for clock it's faster too. The difference was up to $150 for the switch to this. The fact I didn't really spend anything to make it 820QM is a huge plus and the fact I can put a 5870 which is far better than the 460M in the $1,400 laptops today for the same price to upgrade now if I choose is another plus. I'm going to wait until the 5870 price drops then I will get that and put it in. This laptop is MXM 3.0b. You can drop a 580GTX in but it's too bad the powersupply cannot power it.

When I first opened the box and saw how amazing the top cover looked I already knew it was worth it. I even see the keys have backlight and light around the keys that are white which no PC keyboard has and has LEDs on the top cover that light up the side and the logo wow. The feel of the touchpad is amazing and the buttons surrounding it as well. The stickers on the palm rest and the palm rest itself look and feel great. I feel the Toshiba, which was already good, is like a Toyota compared to this BMW. Those who been in both and know the difference between those. Screenshots don't say anything like the real thing. I was very reluctant on buying this laptop. I thought it looks bad. See it in real life and damn. I'm glad I bought it.

This machine is extremely durable. Despite what others might say about it running apps slowly, they don't know how to manage their OS. This machine can run any application, including Adobe Creative Suite apps well. Sure, it's not the fastest thing on the market, but it's a 2.0 dual core CPU, it's a great deal, and for any student/office person trying to save money while still getting things done, it's a great buy. The hardware holds up great, and don't let others tell you it's slow because of how they treat their OS.

This is a great laptop, solid, easy to use, I like that it locks when closed. I didn't find it to be slow as others have said. The keyboard keys are slightly raised, which I liked. The only minor things I didn't like was no numbers pad, so I had to use the numbers across the top, it's a very HEAVY laptop, but worst of all, the battery life was really bad. Two hours max, and it wasn't just my battery, I ordered a backup and it was the same way.

The laptop works okay. It is a little slow and the display fonts are very small. Was able to enlarge them some. Since it is an older laptop you can't expect "like new" and you don't get it. For what I purchased it for which was occasional travel use for a particular purpose, it works fine. Arrived well packaged and you get what you pay for.

This would be a 5-star review if it were not for the manufacturing quality issues. I ordered model 6410 from the Microsoft online store for my wife's b-day at the end of April for $999. It arrived with a 2 inch pixel scratch (subsurface in the screen) and it also had a manufacturing date of Nov 2012, which by computer standards is practically ancient at 6 months old. Microsoft returns are a nightmare but I finally did get a full refund. Fortunately Amazon lowered their price at this time and our 2nd buy was this slightly newer 6468 version manufactured Jan 20, 2013 (whoever names the models must be on crack go to their website if you don't believe me). The Microsoft store in the mall now carries the 6413 which I think might be newer for $999.

Anyway, #2 from Amazon arrived with a bad space key. You had to mash the Space key very hard to get it to work if it worked at all so back it went. Amazon prime shipping and returns are a breeze though which is why I love Amazon so much. The 3rd computer arrived in this time in perfect working condition 3rd time's a charm as they say.

Many oohs and ahs at work meetings on the size and styling. Admittedly the styling is very Mac-like but it's thinner, touch screen and compatible with all of my PC programs for work and home. Honestly though, I find the touch screen pretty useless on a laptop/ultrabook. If it folded back, like a tablet it would be a perfect design.

Sounds like it should be a 2-star review but really this thing is so light and sexy and nothing came close to matching it in May 2013. It's the best 'laptop' I've owned so far ( and I've had HP, Sony, Toshiba, and the worst of the worst my current Dell Aspire 'aka "brick" or "P.o.S" for work that I no longer carry it now stays docked 24-7).

I looked for ultra book for few months and considered macbook air, asus zenbook and sony vaio in addition to the aspire s7.

I didnt buy the mac because I wanted ready to use Windows 8 and touch screen.

eventually I decided to go for the acer, the machine looks great, light, nice, slim, great screen etc.

there are 2 issues:

1. the wifi does not work well it turns out it is a known issue, check acer customers forum.

This is really bad, when I am right next to the wifi router it works fine, if I move 10-15 ft away the speed drops to nothing and it disconnects.

I downloaded the latest driver didnt do much help.

I ended up buying an external wifi usb adapter ... this is not what I got an ultra book for.

2. The other issue is fan noise, I must admit it is not as bad as I thought it may be after reading reviews here.

The wifi issue is way more problematic ....

I bought this laptop after doing my research and watching/reading multiple reviews. Most of the reviews were quite accurate. It's a very light, very pretty, very well-built laptop with an ok battery life. When running large processes i.e. games, the fan can get a bit loud and the area just above the keyboard where I presume the battery is can get a bit hot, but otherwise it is more or less silent and cool.

A note about battery life: I'm getting up to 5 hours running internet/documents, and around 2 hours running League of Legends. This is with all settings optimized for power saving and wi-fi turned on. With wi-fi turned off i.e. airplane mode, I can get 6 to 7 hours.

The speakers work quite well, as does the touchscreen. Thanks to the SSD, boot time from completely shut down to the lock screen is slightly less than 5 seconds. This is an excellent laptop for its price. I could not find it for less elsewhere.

Great design, really beautiful. I think it is much better than Macbook Air. Touch screen is very smooth and clear. The only problem is the original WIFI driver sucks...But after upgrading the latest driver released on April.2003, everything is perfect now.

I purchased this laptop since it was very thin and lightweight and enables me to carry it around with me. The problem I've been having is with the Wi-Fi connection which keeps dropping. I read a bunch of forums and it seems this is a problem for many others who have this model or older. I've tried some of the fixes suggested by Acer and users on the forum and the thing that helped a bit was the switch on the power settings to high performance although it kills the battery quicker. It still drops the connection but not as much.

I finally took the time to write this review.

Four months ago I decided to change my old notebook and buy a top notebook. After a lot of research I decided to pick this Dell XPS 15Z, due to its good hardware specifications, high screen resolution and good aluminium casing. No one can denies this notebook looks beautiful, but it doesn't worth the problems it brings.

To be more specific, I will write one by one the troubles that I have with this piece of problems.

1. As soon as I turned it on, I could already notice that the fan makes a strange noise once in a while. You can see further details about it if you google "XPS 15z grinding noise". There will be plenty of results to prove that maybe all the piece sold come with this problem.

2. After one or two months, the notebook started to show a blue screen of death whenever I would turn it on. For first I thought it was a hardware problem, since usually the BSoD is related to it. So I decided to use the Dell recovery tool, which basically restores your computer to the original factory image. When performing this procedure, the DataSafe tool (a backup tool provided by Dell) said all my files would be available on my Desktop after rebuilding the factory image. And yes, they there. However, what I didn't know was that all my files would be encrypted and that the DataSafe tool provided by Dell wouldn't be able to open them. Whenever I would try to open my files, the program would tell me the files were corrupted. Resuming everything, I lost all my files. I even tried to make use of the online support provided by Dell. A guy connected on my notebook and seemed to have no idea on what he was doing (he basically tried to open the files, the same thing I did).

3. I tried to make use of the change of ownership tool provided by Dell since I am currently living in Brazil. Seriously, I have contacted them more than 10 times and this change is always denied after some days of wait. I have never had so much trouble with support in my whole life.

4. Today, out of sudden, the trackpad went crazy. Whenever I touch it, the arrow starts behaving in a random way. And guess what, I typed trackpad crazy on google and got many results. It seems like the trackpad is unstable with several drivers and I haven't found a solution for it yet.

To resume everything. I am extremely sad that Dell didn't create a quality product. Seriously, it looks like that problems are appearing all the time and sometimes they suddenly disappear. And actually I was pretty much convinced that all Dell products were good when I was buying this notebook. So, I changed my mind and really wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this PIECE OF PROBLEM.

I just got this laptop. I mean like 4 hours ago. Thanks to cloud and everything. I was ready to use it for work within couple of hours. Love Mozy, Dropbox. This is the second time I changed my laptop in 30 days. Last one broke down on me within a months return period. (That was Acer not Dell).

As programmer I don't need any high end laptops but recently I picked up video editing as one of my hobbies. That and I was really looking for high res screen to maximize productivity. On this laptop, I can open two files in 2 editors and work on them. Very useful during webdev.

So the good parts first:

Sleek looking

1080P

Overall good feeling to keyboard

Not too much bloatware (Acer was a nightmare cleaning up).

But it is not perfect. The 2 biggest issue for me right now are:

No separate home & end keys. As a programmer I need those keys. You can hold FN key and hit left or right arrow but I really wish they had regular home & end keys.

NO SLOT FOR LOCK!!! Almost all laptops come with a slot for locking via standard laptop locks. This one doesn't. Since I like to leave my laptop in office overnight every once in a while. Now I won't be able to lock it down. This is a big issue for me. You won't think that Dell would be missing such a basic thing on their laptops. Well I guess I should have looked at the pictures more closely.

I will update my review based on my experience.

I bought this as a replacement for my old Dell XPS M1530. The only change I made was adding a 256GB SSD drive. Now this thing is lightning fast. Dual core with Hyper-threading makes 4 cores. Why pay extra for a quad-core machine? Compared to the M1530 its half as thick, twice as light, and 40X faster. This same laptop on the Dell website was over $1400. So getting it here is definitely the way to go. I never had a laptop with a backlit keyboard so that's a plus. I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for a laptop replacement for their desktop.

My only complaint is that I run Ubuntu and it does not play nice with the Nvidia Optimus card. To resolve this install bumblebee drivers first.

After just two weeks of use I would have to say I am very pleased with this laptop. It's sleek, fast, lightweight and the screen is just about flawless. The touchpad as well as the backlit keyboard are responsive and easy to use. Battery life has been good and recharges fairly quickly. Wireless connection has been excellent. I was up and running within minutes of delivery. It was surprising that it came without any manual or even quickstart guide but turns out it wasn't needed. My only negative would be the anemic sound quality, but this isn't really a problem for me since I wasn't looking for a media machine as much as a good all-around work/personal computer. At this point I would definitely recommend this laptop.
