I was looking for a laptop with 1080p display and I am happy with my choice. This laptop is a real work horse and yet it stays cool and has good battery life.

The company I was doing consulting work for bought this laptop for me two years ago at the end of 2010 and it's still going strong. In fact, I checked out the Lenovo website to see if something better was out yet and surprisingly, this laptop is still better than a lot of systems out today. I think it cost about $2,400 when we purchased it because of the various customizations we ordered but it has proven to be well worth it as this laptop has lasted two years and will probably give us another two years before we upgrade.

We did have one issue with the main battery (the 55++ battery) where it started to only hold about 50% of its original charge after about a year. The laptop's battery monitor notified us that it was in "poor health" so we ordered a replacement and it's been fine since then.

I would recommend upgrading to a solid state hard drive because it makes a HUGE difference. Upgrading to 8 GB or RAM would be sufficient for just about everything you'd need to do with this laptop. All in all, this is a great machine and when we finally do upgrade again, it will be to another Lenovo workstation laptop.

I bought this from Amazon in early May and have used it for over two months now. I have owned VAIO and HP laptops, and the Lenovo outshines them both. This is my second Lenovo. What I like:

comfortable keyboard

great screen

good sound and camera

STURDY it's solid as a truck

fast and reliable

I maxed out the RAM (16Gb), which wasn't very easy to do, but well worth it. My laptop is how I make my living, so productivity is everything for me.

The engineer who swapped the Fn and Ctrl keys in the lower-hand corner should be shamed publicly, but the BIOS key swap resolves that easily.

I ordered the Case Logic sleeve to go with it , and it's a perfect setup.

With just a few minor annoyances, this is a great laptop. When I set out to find a new laptop, the screen was the most important factor for me, and the screen on this one is spectacular at 1080p. The only issue with it is that text changes color to some degree while dragging windows around. Its default brightness is too bright for normal lighting conditions, but it is just right at 13 of 15.

It also runs very cool compared to my previous Dell laptop (though I guess you expect an XPS to run hot). The trackpad is not as good as the Dell's though. Both support double-click and hold to drag items, but the Lenovo has trouble registering it sometimes. And clicking in general as well as the horizontal/vertical scrolling just worked better on the Dell trackpad. Sound was significantly better on the Dell also.

One minor thing is I keep accidentally hitting the DVD drive eject button. Would be much better if it were on the keyboard panel instead of on the side. They also do not include a Windows installation disc. Your only option is to use their preloaded image on the hard drive or install your own independently purchased copy. Maybe that is the norm for computers these days though.

Overall this is an excellent laptop for the professional user. Aside from the issues I listed, everything else is spectacular as far as professional/business users are concerned. I haven't done a whole lot of gaming with it, but I did try out Starcraft II which played with no problems.

The delivery was fast honestly. The laptop was a second hand refurbished but according to seller in excellent condition. The first day the "C" key popped out of the laptop. The computer came with a load of spyware. It's extremely hard to connect to wifi network because It loses the network as soon as I move it. all my other devices move up and down my house just fine unless I disconnect them. I have to keep removing my router plug to reconnect to this computer. The keys are not very responsive. the zoom feature is good. the web cam is one of the best I've ever had. The size is very comfortable for me and it's a little bulky compare to most laptops in this class. I'm a student and it's not a bad laptop replacement

The laptop was shipped quickly, packaged perfectly and the tech specs were exactly what I was looking for.

Features are just as described and it isn't too heavy as well. Fits perfectly in a book bag or backpack and is the right size as opposed to a 15" laptop which feels a little large. All USB ports, etc are working. I have no problems with it as of now.

I spent a lot of time researching for a laptop replacement. I liked HP products and found this gem. It had everything I was looking for at a reasonable price. The screen display is unbelievable! I LOVE my screen. Powerful, great processor, lots of storage and user friendly processes. The only drawbacks for me were the shorter than average battery life and, since I wanted a decent-sized screen,it is a little big for carrying around. It is going to be missed if I have to replace it anytime soon. Had this one for almost 3 years!

My internet connection never had problems dropping on my windows 7 HP, HP sucks in it's own right but this one is so confused becuase it has a browser in windows 8 and if you try using IE on desktop the connection is not smooth. I set the settings so that this wouldn't happen but it still drops my connection. I VPN for work on my work laptop which has 7 and never have a problem with connections so I know it's not my ATT Router. I am going to work with support to resolve but what I'm finding on the internet is not favorable and seems like an issue for a lot of people buying windows 8 PCs, laptops, etc. If I'm downloading something guess what? the connection drops in the middle of process. Very messed up, I am seriously considering returning and getting a windows 7 laptop if I can downgrade.

Lenovo ThinkPad T400 7417

If you're like me and can't live without the ThinkLight or pointer mouse then the new T line is for you. With the new 25w mobile cpu (P8400 in my case) it runs cool enough to not need an additional platform cooler while on your lap (it doesn't blow hot air either). From the first reports they must have repositioned the Thinklight because my doesn't blind me (it's inside the bezel more now I think). You might want to download the additional Keyboard Customizer program from Lenovo to disable the forward and back web keys that are next to the Up arrow. I kept pressing them by mistake and causing all kinds of problems.

Pros: Thinklight. pointer mouse (hate those aweful touchpads! disabled mine). thin and light. Great battery life even with just 6 cell. Single latch switch. Cool running cpu. Bought through Ebay (ellan_mouse) for only $750 after 10% ebay discount with no tax or shipping charges (now that's a deal!). Keyboard feels the same (not flexy like other reports). XP Pro still available.

Cons: Screen off to the right, widescreen (I like tall more than wide), lcd screen not the brightest and bad off angle viewing (might be good for security and keeping peepers away though). Had to install program to disable keyboard buttons (forward/back web page buttons). Speakers sound tiny. I don't know if it's my Airlink 150N router but I'm only getting 72Mb top speed from its 5100N wireless. Not as easy to add memory as older units (must remove keyboard bezel now).

Seems like a lot of Cons but at this price I am not complaining. I have a huge home system so my T400 is just a stripped down unit with XP Pro (not whista), only 1 gb of memory (everything running uses less than 700 Mb), intel video, dvd only reader (I use flash drives and only burn dvds on my home unit). Didn't make sense to pay another $300 for options (video, burner) that my home unit can do better and faster. I still use the T400 way more at home for doing most things. I just got the T400 so I don't know if it will last as long as my old T22 has (still running when I sold it) but I hope so! It may not be the prettiest unit but it's light, fast, cheap and practical for the discriminating user.

If you want a performance laptop with durability and reliability, look no more. ThinkPads have been the top of the line laptops for IBM and now Lenovo. I bought this for half the price of what a MacBook Pro costs and performed some easy installation upgrades such as Solid State drive and 8GB of Ram. With a Macbook you have to do a bit more work just to perform these tedious upgrades (Apple doesn't like it when you open up their products).

This Laptop is lightning fast, the keyboard is a joy to type on, speakers are great, webcam view is clear and the very cool thing about this laptop is the Ultra bay hot swap. If you don't use the CD/DVD recordable drive as much, you can easily eject it by pressing the Ultra bay eject tab and insert an additional battery or an extra hard drive for backups. This feature is very very cool and you can't do that on a MacBook Pro!

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit runs flawlessly (thanks to Microsoft)and by far is the best Windows version Microsoft has ever built. The BitLocker encryption is a plus which allows you to encrypt USB, SD cards, folders, files or the hard drive itself for extra protection. But if you want security, this laptop has another cool feature..it has an accurate fingerprint reader that allows you to associate any finger with your password(s). In other words, no more typing passwords to log into Windows. When you boot up your laptop, it prompts you to swipe your finger and presto! Without the finger swipe, no thief or intruder can wipe or access or remove your hard drive without that finger print. You can't do that on a Macbook Pro!!

Finally, I love the so called rollcage technology (durable frame inside)that guards it from those accidental drops. It also has a cool drain technology for those accidental spills...you can't do that on Macbook Pro!

So do yourself a favor, if want want more bang for your buck with all these extra goodies and performance, get a ThinkPad! I also highly recommend uninstalling any Lenovo software you may not want to use just to free up some space. I only use Lenovo update software, Fingerprint and Power Manager. Those are all you need!

$1600 for top of the line ThinkPad with goodies vs. $2200 for a Macbook Pro (without SSD or 8GB Ram)....the choice is obvious!

Best Deals for Lenovo ThinkPad T400 7417

The battery life is long 6.5 hour with surprising low heat. I can use it for hours without any burning feeling. The weight is just tolerable with big enough screen. It is the best laptop that i have ever used.

Honest reviews on Lenovo ThinkPad T400 7417

I ordered this ThinkPad T400 on Friday night and I received the laptop at 2:00pm on the next following Tuesday. What could I ask for more with the $220.18 high-end laptop, with no tax, free and fast shipping, and especially it runs so much quieter and so much more reliable than my over-$1800-customized-order HP Pavilion dv9700t CTO (it has been crashed like crazy because of the conflict motherboard and Nvidia Geforce GPU, HP has dropped the ball !) ?!

-The laptop came with clean installation and a copy of authentic Windows-OS Disc as refurbished condition from Tampa-Laptop.

-This was my first time to buy a refurbished laptop and so far the money was well spent! It just reminded me that the experience of buying a high-end or top-of-line-used cars, that is, you would get enjoying the "high-end/ high quality" for a small fraction of the original price.

-The courtesy service from the Tampa-Laptop computer was the reason that I wrote this positive comment.

Well, all I could say it: "keep up the good customer oriented service, Tampa-Laptop !"

Thanks

I purchased my computer new back in the summer of 2008. This has been one of the best computers I have owned. I usually replace my computers every three years however this one works so great I see no reason to make the change. This computer gets heavy use and works like new. Its on in my household between 2-4 hours a day without a single issue. This is my 4th Lenovo, replacing my older T61, and I was thinking about a T410 and see no need. Nothing special (besides tablets) has been developed to justify a new purchase. I would highly recommend the Lenovo T400.

I've had this laptop for about a year and I love it. Upgraded the OS to Windows 7 Professional and got the Toshiba External CD Rom Drive. Not one problem getting everything to work right out of the box.

I do use a separate keyboard and mouse when at my desk but only the mouse when I leave the office. Also got speakers so I can hear my music on Pandora as the built in speakers sound soft to me, but it may be my ears and not Toshiba's fault. The screen is good for when on the road but I'd add an external monitor (20" min.) for office use. Also make sure to get a good fan for it to sit on to help keep it cool and extend the life of the battery and PC.

Have lots of software on it: Windows 2007, ACT 2011 and Sage MAS 90/200 and Sage Peachtree on it with no problems. As a software reseller, I get to run lots of software that most laptop users don't usually see. Very data intense and it runs all of them like a charm.

What a dream machine. And I like the red color, too. These machines have come a LONG WAY since 1983 when I was using and selling IBM PC clones back in the 1980's. Would you believe $5,000 for a 64 K memory and 20 MB Hard drive orange or green letter screen (no color back then and no pictures, either!) I was also a early Mac Developer and have one of the original MAC 128 K machines in my attic, so I've seen and tried lots of computers.

How can you go wrong with at Toshiba, who pretty much invented the laptop category? Just make sure to treat it with lots of TLC and it will return the favor to you.

I bought this computer at Best Buy in June, 2010. I bought it b/c it was small, lightweight and had good specs. The initial problems I've had were common to other laptops (PCs) that I've had very low sound even when volume turned all the way up, lots of crapware installed by Toshiba and a propensity for the computer to get hotter than a car's engine.

The real problems came in August, 2010, when Toshiba issued a recall of this series of laptops due to a BIOS issue which causes the computer to overheat by the AC power input. The official word was that it was a BIOS issue but others online have speculated the real culprit was faulty hardware. Anyway, their instructions were to install the new BIOS on your own and if it was successful, you'd be ok, but if not, you'd have to send your computer back to them. I've heard many horror stories about folks sending their computers back in for repairs and them coming back in worse shape, often after a significant period of time.

I followed their instructions though and the BIOS update worked. However, just a few days ago, I got a pop-up message telling me a faulty BIOS has been detected and that the computer would no longer receive power from the AC adapter, and to call their customer service number.

The customer service center was in Manila in the Philipines and the call center reps were impossible to understand which made it useless to talk with them about what to do.

Apparently though, the message I received about a faulty BIOS was probably incorrect b/c the computer did not lose the ability to receive power via the AC adapter. I did slightly burn myself from the AC power area getting too hot however.

When I tried to get assistance from Toshiba's corporate office, I was given the runaround and directed back to the automated number set to handle the recall of this POS laptop. I did not feel like sending a year old laptop back for an indeterminate amount of time that probably wouldn't even fix my computer. What would I do for work while I was without a laptop? If your automobile has a recall due to a manufacturer defect, they would give you a loaner car while your car is repaired. Computers are just as vital these days.

Needless to say, I didn't send it in and it appears to be working...for now. I will absolutely never purchase another Toshiba product. I don't know what kind I'll buy since all of the manufacturers seem to have issues with shoddy hardware, off-shored customer "support" and don't stand behind their products once you've paid them.

I would give this laptop, and Toshiba, zero stars if I could.

Reviews of Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 13.3-Inch Ultrabook
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
The Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 is Toshiba's latest entry in a very competitive ultrabook market. Toshiba's aim here was to produce the lightest ultraportable laptop while maintaining some functionality and they've done a very nice job. The laptop weighs in at a hair over 2.5 pounds (which is about 3 slim magazines). This is a welcomed replacement to my eight pound 10 year old Apple Powerbook.

Structurally, the laptop is sound. You can pick up the laptop by one corner and the chassis will not flex nor bend. This is surprising considering how thin the laptop is. Conversely, the screen is very flexible and bends easily. I've read reports that the screen wobbles when you are typing with the laptop on your lap but I haven't experienced that at all. While the hinges are stiff enough, you wouldn't want to open the laptop screen with the corner of the screen. You would hold the screen from the center to open it.

The SSD is zippy and loading takes only 4-5 seconds from cold start and almost instantaneous from sleep mode. The i5 processor is very capable of handling the demands of most business users and casual gamers. The laptop never hiccuped when running Microsoft Office products with multiple documents or spread sheets open. While the laptop is not intended for gaming, I was able to play Star Craft 2 on the lowest settings without any lag at all. However, turning up the graphics settings slowed the game down quite a bit.

The only complaints I have so far:

spacing of the keyboard keys. The keys are spaced out in such a way that I tend to miss keys sometimes. It may be a good idea to go to a retail store and play with the keyboard for a bit to see if you like it.

built in webcam picture quality is slightly grainy not what I expected out of a laptop this expensive

fan noise in a quiet room, there is an audible hum coming from underneath the laptop, do anything processor/graphics intensive and the fan kicks into overdrive and can be annoying

Despite some shortcomings, my initial impressions have been very good thus far. This was my first laptop purchase online and I was a little hesitant that I wouldn't be happy but I have been nothing but pleased so far in the week that I've owned it. I'll be back in a few weeks to update my review after I've had a chance top play with it some more, but so far, I'd have to give it two thumbs up.

I'm giving this a Fiver. What a great little machine. At 2.5 pounds it's like the Jenny Craig of laptops. I did my due diligence research before I purchased and the Toshiba Ultras were rated highly on many different sites. Also I happen to work in the same lab as the Emerging Technologies group for my company and they had ordered 5 evaluation units from 5 different mfgs so I was able to compare them all straight up before purchasing. The Toshiba was definitely the winner and the Samsung Series 9 was very good also. The ACER, ASUS and HP were definitely trailing with the HP coming in last (sorry HP guys). The processor and ram specs were all very similar so I based a lot of my opinion on asthectics, keyboard layout, design and weight. I'm not going to go into so called "cons" like the size of the hard drive or lack of CD-ROM since the buyer knows these things up front anyway and if that won't work for you then look at another machine. A con to me is more like claimed performance not living up to expectations or a hardware component that is flakey. As far as the "heavy lifting" goes, you can do all the heavy lifting you want with the I5 processor as long as it's within the contraints of the capacity of the hard drive. I love the instant on feature and it truly does work as advertised. Along with Amazons usual kick butt fast shipping I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Best Deals for Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

After reviewing the Macbook Air 13, the Zenbook UX31 and the Toshiba Z835, I selected the Toshiba. In my opinion an ultra-book should include as many features of a standard size notebook as possible into the lightest, most compact form factor possible. The Z835 wins on the most ports and expansion options. The Z835 wins on being the lightest weight. The Z835 wins with having the most reasonable price. The MSRP is $1049.99, however OfficeMax had a sales promotion and the device was $949.00. On top of that, the Z835 also had all of the features I wanted including the i5 quad core processor, 6 gigabytes of ram, Bluetooth and HDMI out. I also like the sleep and charge USB port which allows me to charge my Clear hotspot, a huge plus because I don't have yet another ac adaptor to carry around. The subdued styling works for me being as I'm not crazy about shiny / polished gadgets. The keyboard is great with the key spacing and key travel just fine for me being as I'm a touch typist. The keyboard backlighting also works well for me. The multi touch touchpad is one of the best I've ever used. The response is extremely fluid and smooth. I've stopped using my arc touch mouse, it's that good. For such a small device, the sound system puts out high quality sound. Between the speakers and the audio enhancement software, the sound is excellent. The sound is also great on Bluetooth when I stream to my Plantronics BackBeat earphones. I normally stream music from jazzradio.com, digitally imported or audio galaxy so I've always got access to great tunes. When out taking pictures, I either use the included sd card slot or use my Eye-Fi 4 gig wi-fi card to transfer photos. Everything has worked without a hitch. With the i5 processor, 6 gigs of ram and the SSD, the Z835 is extremely fast and has handled everything I've given it with absolutely no performance issues. Being as I have not been on battery power that often, I can't accurately discuss battery life. However all of the reviews I read give it very high marks for battery life. About the only complaint I have is the small SSD. I hope when larger SSD's come available I can swap them out on my own. For now I carry my 1TB WD USB 3.0 drive, which contains all of my music, pictures, data and movies. For my school and personal files I use on a daily basis, I sync with my cloud based DropBox account. The Z835, along with my Apollo 4G hot spot have become my complete mobile solution, it is that versatile. No more tablet or smart phone and the associated data access plans that come with them. In my opinion the Z835-370 represents the best overall value of all of the ultra-books currently available. The Z835-370 comes highly recommended.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

I debated buying a Thrive or this and chose the laptop.

What's great:

+ Weighs very little and I can easily stow it in my leather padfolio case with expandable file.

I have gotten positive feedback on both. Be careful of making your executive team jealous!

Many a project manager and business analyst just want a lightweight PC for taking notes, recording a meeting,

processing email or surfing the web. Ideal match.

+ Thin! My LG phone is thicker than this notebook.

+ The Solid State Drive (SSD) is sweet. Instant on. No long boot times. Spoil me baby!

+ Includes 1 USB3.0 port and 2 USB2.0 ports, one of which is on the side, the rest on the back.

+ The Ethernet off the back is wonderful, being out of the way, though I had to get used to it being mounted upside down.

+ Anecdotal battery review: I unplugged at 10am this morning to use it in meetings all day and a working lunch and near 5pm

it was low and finally hibernated. 7 hours work without complaint? OK for my purposes.

What's not:

At 128GB, you start the Windows experience half-full. I upgraded from the Home version of Win 7 to Professional.

Now, I have 67 GB free. The formatted 128 GB is actually only 102 GB capacity, 67 GB now free.

Why oh why won't Toshiba make this product with 256 GB drives?

So, how do you get a little more space to buzz around with this tiny dancer laptop?

Well, while I bought a SanDisk Extreme Pro (45 mb/sec) SDHC card, I was wondering how it would play with the Portege.

Answer: Toshiba has a crappy 15 SDHC unit built in and all I could get out of it was 15 mb/sec.

Nevertheless, I am planning to pickup a slow (15 mb/sec) 64 GB SDXC card and check that for compatability.

Watch out for cooling. My first unit arrived and booted with an OS complaint the cooling system was not working. Exchanged!

The new unit arrived working fine, but I quickly learned the laptop is silent only when doing little or nothing.

If you dare to install something that requires CPU power, like a game, you will hear the fan ROAR as it tries to keep up

with the heat generation of the CPU. I dumped the games I installed immediately. Back to work I guess.

The screen is 1366x768, which is OK, but not great. This low res vertical is still one of the day-to-day

most annoying feature of laptops, when we live on the web and screen real-estate is king. 1024 would have made this an

awesome design, but it is only OK.

Last caution is that the thin screen is a handling risk. If it seems fragile (and it does) then it probably is fragile.

Get insurance.

Personally, I would have rounded the corners if I were on the engineering team, but the squareness fits in with the Microsoft

world. Haha, sorry MSFT.

So, am I happy with it? You bet I am!

I had the computer for one month and the screen malfunctioned. I sent it to Toshiba for them to repair it under warranty. Then about two to three weeks later I receive it back, with a copy of the warranty and a note saying the repairs are not covered but without stating the reason. What they did with it for three weeks is anyone's guess as I heard nothing from the company. After more hours on the phone with the company, it appears that any issues with the screen are assumed to be the customer's fault and Toshiba calls you a liar if you try to convince them otherwise. For comparison, I had an Asus whose screen malfunctioned after 11 months and they replaced it no questions asked. The computer itself is a fine machine but if you happen to get a lemon, you will get no love from Toshiba. So thanks to their policies, I will not look to purchase any Toshiba products in the future.

Update: After receiving it back from their repair facility, the computer would not charge or turn on when plugged in. Weeks more with the Toshiba repair facility await. What a horrible product

This notebook is a good deal. Overall quality is good. It scores 3.4 on Windows Experience Index, due to the processor. Memory, Gaming, and Hard disk score above 5. Screen, quietness, and sound are very good. Keyboard and case are unimpressive but functional.

Will stream Netflix HD video fine, but that is it's processing limit.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase.

the front side of the keyboard near by where the touch-pad is, the machine has the 2-two buttons so wrong positioned that when you set this laptop on your lap the buttons activate frecuently.

I'm happy how it performs, the look its simple and the key on the keyboard are all the same color, very basic, good buy.I recomend it buying it, you wont lose (if you get used to the 2-key issue)

I recently recieved this as a gift from a family member, and im pretty impressed. Not saying its a powerhouse, im just saying it passed my expectations. First of all it can handle light gaming. I played far cry 3 on lowest settings with a decent amount of lag, but iwas surprised it could handle it at all. of course its not a gaming powerhouse but it nice to see i could have a somewhat decent gaming experience with it. my biigest gripe is battery its not very good now i know that this is no ultrabook, but i was hoping for a solid 4 or 5 hours of moderate use, but i get 3 hours of browsing or light use, and thats a rarity, usually around 2 and a half hours. although i was impressed(to an extent) with all the laptops out today 350$ can get you a better machine. but at the time of its releasemid say this was good for the price

This computer is easy to set up, and more importantly, easy to use. It was purchased for my 88 year old somewhat computer illiterate mother, she has had very few issues with it.

I would purchase this item for myself if I were in the market for a new laptop.

I got this laptop as a gift from my Mom. She got it for around the same price you see here on amazon. I'll break this review down into a few sections.

Performance:

This computer was pretty fast when you first get it. After a while, like any other computer, it slows down a bit.

Graphics:

This laptop will definitely run old games such as Star Wars BattleFront II, GTA San Andreas, and a few other not-so-graphic-intensive titles. It was advertised as a "gaming" laptop, but don't let them fool you. It has a poor graphics card that has trouble running a lot of things.

The Outside and Keyboard:

The outside of the computer is pretty cool in my opinion. It has a wavy texture that prevents almost all smudges and all fingerprints. This wavy texture continues around the mouse pad and keyboard. There are 3 USB ports and there is 1 HDMI cable spot. There is also an input for another monitor and of course, an ethernet port. The keyboard is odd to me. The keys are aranged so that there are gaps in between them so that EVERYTHING can get in between. This means you're going to have to pry off the keys a lot to get crap out from under them.

Audio:

This computer came with only 1, off center, mono speaker. The speaker isn't very loud and, as I said, is off center (to the left.) This doesn't bother me too much but it has potential to be annoying. Don't buy this computer if you're planning to blast music. (You can connect speakers and they'll sound fine/loud)

Resolution:

The resolution is my only major complaint about this laptop. It's set up with the dreadful 1366x768 resolution. If you don't know what resolution is: Resolution determines how much you can fit on your screen at a time. If you're a multi-tasker, you want a higher resolution. 1366x768 is just about the lowest resolution it can go and still function. It works, but you may sacrifice some graphics with some games and videos.

Windows Experience Index:

The Windows Experience Index is just a benchmarking system that tells you your computer's overall performance. The scale goes from 1.0 to a 7.9. Here are the results from my (unmodified) laptop:

Processor (what's rated: Calculations per second) 3.9

RAM (what's rated: Memory operations per second) 5.9 (You really don't need much RAM, especially if it's not going to be utilized by the low-end CPU (processor))

Graphics (what's rated: Desktop Performance) 4.5

Gaming Graphics (what's rated: 3D business and gaming graphics performance) 4.5

Primary Hard Disk (what's rated: Disk data transfer rate) 5.8

Summary:

I've had this computer for a year or two now. The "gaming" graphics are pretty horrific, so don't try running anything intense. The Resolution is pretty crappy, but you won't notice it if you're not thinking about it; everything fits on the screen nicely. This is a mid-range, average laptop. This is a good computer for a good price. I'm happy with it.

overall, this laptop runs well. It's fast enough, can handle some fairly intense applications (audio and video) not as quickly as a real workstation, but it does a good job for what it is. Not a gamers box..

Battery life is great, no complaints.

The screen is nice, great pictures/colors/detail.

The volume is WAY TO LOW. I've not looked for hacks to fix this and hope it's not a hardware issue, but I've purchased a couple of these laptops and all suffer from this issue. Yes, volume up in control panel and app, all the way. I've considered installing Linux on it to rule out a hardware issue, but I'm really not thinking it's worth it. I'm just going to leave computer speakers at work and home.

Sound is great and loud with headphones.

The keyboard... perhaps my biggest complaint. there is a numeric pad on the right side but it is not separated from the standard part of the keyboard. Because of this it's a very difficult keyboard to get used to. VERY hard to find "home," cursor control keys way too small and awkwardly placed. The hard to find keys are even harder to find in the dark as they are butted up against the num pad.

Much of this would not be a problem if there was some space in between alphs keyboard & the numeric pad. Also, if the keyboard were lit it would be so much easier to use. IMO ALL laptops should have lit keyboards.

Despite it's nice features, for me, the keyboard is so painful to use I am likely going to turn this one into a media controller or something and get another beater that fits me better.

All that being said, it works well considering the price. Someone who only uses 1 keyboard might find it more intuitive. Kids adapt well to keyboard changes and my kids love to use this laptop..

Got this laptop for my parents who are 83 and 81 years old. They love it. It was easy to set up and works great with their new wireless setup. I added an external keyboard and mouse for them as the laptop keyboard is a little too small for them to see well, but otherwise, it has been a great computer for them and they really like it.

To start I'll say I've purchased many of the Acer models similar to this. They work great, and are at a very low price point.

Good: As always nice screen... bright. Its inexpensive. Tech support was easy to work with. This processor is a good one. Includes high def graphics. Fine for WOW or some of your other games, nothing too intense. 4 GB of RAM is awesome for the price. Shipping was very fast, as I have prime. Took 1 day instead of 2.

Bad: Keyboard sucks. Absolutely awful, i've had many customers very upset about the keyboard. First one I opened of this was bad out of the box. Wouldn't charge the battery. Tried another battery, and it still didn't charge, tried another cord, still didn't work. Thus the motherboard was bad out of the box. Called Tech support and explained what I did, he simply said okay, lets get it in. Sent me a fedex label which was good. Bad is they said it'll be 7-10 days to get it back.

To note: Overall for the price I'd say its good. Computers are just not made like they used to, but at the same time they used to be 1200 dollars... then 800... 600... and now you can get a halfway decent one for under 400..

I just purchased this laptop from Best Buy yesterday, and I'm pleased so far with the results. I was a little apprehensive about making the switch to Vista 64 bit, but so far, so good. I've only found one HW item so far that I've had trouble with a little $10 USB travel mouse. So far, all other software and hardware has worked fine in Vista 64 (most importantly, my old games).

I haven't run into any issues yet, just the typical bloatware that was installed on the PC by gateway. One other annoyance with the scroll function on the mousepad. The right area is dedicated to the scroll function, and it's not quite as responsive as I'd like, but so far, that's my only complaint about this laptop (one that I'll not have to deal with once I get a compatible USB mouse).

I have played both Titan Quest and Age of Empires 3, with the detail cranked all the way up, and while I had to dial back a couple of the settings, the laptop has performed admirably well. I haven't had a chance to load any FPS games yet, but feel that I'll be able to run those at medium settings.

I've had this laptop for four years and still today, it's quick and meets all my needs. I even got upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 for free from the Gateway/Microsoft deal that occured. One of my favorite features is HDMI, that allows for plugging this into a LCD/Plasma for watching movies in hotel rooms and at home for some streaming movies. The battery now has a little trouble making it through a full Dvd movie, but does well if the movie is on the Hard Drive -the fact that it still lasts longer than an hour on battery power amazes me considering most four year old batteries wouldn't survive longer than a few minutes (besides, when I'm using it I'm usually near a power source these days).

Best laptop I have ever owned.

This thing heated up fast within minutes. Within a couple of months after purchase, it couldn't be turned on. I sent it back for repair under warranty. It was returned with a new motherboard as I was told. Same problems persisted. It finally stopped working after 2 years. Meanwhile my second hand (6 years old) Lenova T61(T7300)is still kicking.

I have had this laptop for almost 3 years. I had updated the memory and nothing else has been done.

I had lost the charger and got myself ebay replacement which destroyed the port by expanding. Gateway fixed the port for free and sent me a replacement charger.

I did get lot of viruses which made the laptop overheat so linux or replacing the windows every two month will help you last this computer for very long time.

only complaint is speakers and wifi card (not as good as other laptops but if you have excellent router this will not be a issue).

It's an Okay laptop. A little slow running (thanks in partially to how much of a resource hog vista is). If you can get one with windows 7 I would. I personally received this laptop from my mother so it's little on the old side (maybe a year or two). I suppose it's not horrible for the price.

The looks are nice except for the fact that the outside attracts finger smudges like there's no tomorrow.

Does the job as far as running various programs. I personally am a Graphic Design/ Computer Animation student in college. This computer can run programs such as photoshop, indesign, and lightwave fairly decently without any freezing.

The battery on this pretty much sucks.... It stopped charging to full charge within only a few months of use. however I think this may also have been an issue with vista itself not recognizing the charge? As since installing linux it seems to be charging right.

Also my charge cord broke after not to long. But this may have just been how my mother was using it before she gave it to me.

I recently have had a problem with it where the computers shell (vista) began to have issues....for some reason I didn't get the disc or anything with this to reinstall it. I had to install linux (ubuntu 10.04lts for the curious) on it. seems to have made the laptop run much faster so far. The built in camera is not automatically detected...still trying to see if its compatible with linux. Really not an issue unless you want linux...which most users won't. The fact that windows went wonky on my laptop is more a bad luck issue then anything else so It's not something to worry about to much when purchasing just make sure you have windows instillation cds or the company is willing to telly you how to reinstall windows when you buy it is all.

The only true bad thing I can say about this laptop is that the keyboard is crappy. you really have to slam the keys down to get the laptop to recognize all the letters you type. Which is annoying as it will occasionally not even accept some letters and so yo'll have typos where you'll be missing only one letter in the word (and in the entire sentence as shown by my awesome you'll typo..... -_-;)

What the kid said above is true...it's a little heavy though certainly not the heaviest computer.

okay graphics card...not amazing. will play some games like call of duty and the sims...but nothing to graphic heavy.

Soooo the breakdown.

Cons:

Crap keyboard (have to press really hard to get all your letters typed)

Sloooooow internet (with vista...don't know about xp or 7)

Possible bad battery (though not sure since it now charges fine under linux)

Webcam not auto detected wit linux (not suprising...and probably not useful info to most people)

possible delicate cord

didn't get shell backup

Pros:

fairly nice looking

works for everyday use

can run programs that use a lot of ram and not crash (like photoshop, lightwave)

runs well speed wise under linux (probably with windows7 to)

Fairly good for the price (especially if you generally have better luck with computer then me and my family. lol)
