Very happy with this laptop. Great specs for the price. Plays Portal 2 and Arkham Asylum on High at max resolution without any hiccups. It hardly makes any noise. Vents are ideally positioned so it never gets hot. Beautiful display. Nice keyboard. Only complaint is that the shipping was slow.

No complaints with this laptop after several weeks of use! Starcraft 2 runs great, 900P screen is crisp. Plenty of other perks... would buy again.

The touchpad is going to make you wish you had a mouse. Its annoying for copy and pasting. Its also not centered relative to the laptop itself, but offset to the left. I've maxed out the sensitivity for it and it still needs more.

The wireless has software AND a button which only work together the first time after booting. So if you turn off the wireless and want to turn it on... you may have to Reboot. Plus they decided to make it more insecure by allowing it to default to on while booting... and even turning itself back on if powering off. Its annoying to push the little wireless button and nothing happens, or using the software and getting a connection error, requiring a reboot. (goodluck trying to find the actual wireless software exe file)

At this point I'm feeling I just need to uninstall their poor attempt with Win7 and put my own system onto it, assuming its not going to depend on their garbage software.

And why on earth couldnt they just make a pdf of their manual instead of some exe file which is overkill and fairly useless if you've been around computers for a few years?

PowerDVD software still hickups playing back bluray even with 8GB of memory installed.

Speakers give a hollow sounding playback.

I'm glad I only paid 740 for this.. I bought Samsung because I have a Samsung monitor thats lasted over 6 years and is user friendly. I guess it didnt translate to laptops.

Maybe my review will improve if the clean install improves performance and cuts some of the annoyance...

Update: Re-installing a clean Win7 Ultimate sure made it better. Even the touchpad works better.

Honest reviews on Samsung RF711-S01 17.3-Inch Laptop (Brilliant Black)

We purchased the 17.3 inch model NP-RF711 about six month ago. We loved the screen and performance about this Samsung but the battery life was only 3 hours normal use. Still, we were mostly using it home so 3 hours was enough. But, that was just a beginning! Few month later it went down drastically and now its literally ten minutes! So, we contacted Samsung about this issue and after they verified everything they told us to ship it to them by UPS and wait approximately two weeks for them first to test it. Now, we had a Sony laptop being warranty serviced before and they never expected us to give out our laptop for at least a two weeks in order for them to first test it. I offered their Customer Service rep. Jessica to take it to a Samsung Service Center which I know they have in the area but they only give you one option mail it and wait! Their Rep was unprofessional and unfortunately very ignorant. You would get more help from automated answering machine probably than from their Service team. I hope this will warn some of you considering buying Samsung laptop. Don't buy it unless you confident you wont have to ever call their Service Department! Save your money and buy something else, not worth it.

Got this for a great price and has everything BUT the backlit keyboard that was on the page was incorrect. Although this was a major let down the price for an i5, 17.3", with 4GB of RAM was still a great price. I had done research on this laptop before buying it and knoew that was a possibility. It is very fast and provided you use it as a work computer (with maybe a little light gaming from time to time) it should last for a long time.

The customer service with the company was stellar. The return was smooth, our credit was instant. The description stated this laptop had a back-lit keyboard. The was a must for us. Sadly the description was wrong; it did not have a back-lit keyboard so we returned it.

I regularly shop on Amazon.com because of the convenience, the reviews and the customer service. The experience was not a positive experience customer service wise. Initially based on the specs and the price I was really impressed. I confirmed the specs with the company prior to ordering so I was very disappointed to see that the laptop did not have the backlit keyboard that was initially listed in the specs on Amazon.com. Mistakes happen but the way they handled the mistake insured that I will not be a return customer. Amazon has since been updated to include the correct information but it was done in a dishonest manner following an e-mail exchange with the company that was very frustrating. At no point did they offer a resolution or an apology for the error. So the two stars is not for the product but for the seller. I gave a bonus star because after several e-mails were exchanged they did finally take an acceptable tone but I was still out of a laptop.

HP Envy dv7-7240us 17.3-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I replaced my dell inspiron with this laptop, and I was quite impressed when I first layed my hands upon the envy dv7.

EXTERIOR DESIGN:

It has a very solid chrome-like feel. It isn't made of plastic except for the outer edges of the screen (which most laptops these days are trending to have), but the rest is very sturdy. It has an LED-lit HP logo, and also a light if you plug in your computer through the ethernet via the ethernet cable. A small warning would be that the light is particularly bright, but that does not bother me one bit when I go to bed, as it is all personal preference. Another smaller LED light is next to the charger port, but compared to the other lights, this one is barely noticeable.

The Keyboard is very sleek, living up to my expectations. The keys are able to be lit-up with a bright white LED, which can be turned on/off at any time of preference. Overall, the keyboard is nicely done and comfortable to use by HP, as all other Envy models. Same goes for the mousepad.

PERFORMANCE:

I was impressed in that they lived up to their spec's expectations. It boots up very quickly from a hard shutdown to a working desktop in around 20-30 seconds. With 8 gb ram, multitasking is strongly encouraged, with a 2.5 gHz clockspeed processor. However I must note that this is note a gaming laptop. Intel HD graphics 4000 is at the very low end of the graphics card department, but that does not drag down my experience with this laptop. Intel is still known for delivering crisp and simple graphics, though it isn't made for anything too graphic intensive. Another thing to note is that for some odd reason, all of my youtube videos seemed to stream inexplicably slowly. I upgraded to the latest version of adobe flash, but I would have to wait to stream anything that is 360+, forcing me to watch videos at 240p. Despite this huge letdown, overall the general performance was generally good.

The camera was flat-out average, with the mio. Nothing was too impressive here, it was all standard.

The sound was impressively loud. I would always be shocked of the capabilities of noise being produced by the Envy dv7, though I wish the subwoofer can do more of the base work. The sound quality was kind of a let-down. I could feel the base change as I toggle it through the Beats program, however the change is not very noticeable. This is not a problem for me though, because I usually only use my laptops at home, with built-in conveniences such as another external 3-inch creative sub woofer with surrounding speakers.

OVERALL:

Pros:

-Fast in general for basic use

-Great specs for price

-Great sturdy build

-Loud built-in speakers

-Great layout with lit-up keyboard and comfortable mouse pad

-17.3 inches delivers crisp experience

Cons:

-Not made for anything graphic intensive like games

-Youtube streams very slowly (may be just me)

-Camera and mic are average

-Speaker quality didn't live up to the hype it has received

I am not saying anything about windows 8 because I feel like it should not affect a PC/laptop's rating in general. I feel like if you want to review 2 stars on a laptop just because you strongly dislike windows 8, you should review windows 8 directly somewhere else.

Added November 28: After working with HP Tech support, which was very polite and useful and agreed I had a hardware problem, I then went to Amazon customer support, which arranged for me to get a new, replacement laptop, and ship the defective one back no cost to me. The new one arrived and--after Thanksgiving holiday--I had time to explore the Envy.

The same delights: speed, graphics, big display, fast boot and shut down, fast change between apps, were all there. The keyboard works well, and I notice, the mouse buttons are easy too. After a day or so of typing, I am as fast as ever I was on my other keyboards. In fact, the keyboard has a nice feel: a gentle travel, responsive, nice space between keys to lessen the dread two letters/one touch problem. The ports are good, the SD up front is good design.

I'm upping from the original three stars to five. It is a handsome, quick, useful, easy to use, much more than adequate to my current needs. I don't regret the earlier review, HP's quality control should have caught that. I'm very glad I bought from Amazon. Their excellent customer service made the small increase ($6)over the lowest online price well worth it.

I bought this computer to replace my old HP Pavilion dv7, works well, looks great, sound is bomb and it is a whole lot faster than my old computer. Only issue I have is that the LED light on the side that is on when you plug the power in, is waaaay too bright. So if you have this in the same room while you are sleeping plugged in it can be a problem though I just unplug when I sleep.

Honest reviews on HP Envy dv7-7240us 17.3-Inch Laptop

I needed a laptop with a large screen and a solid processor. This seemed to fit the bill. It arrived quickly and was well packaged. It. The screen is crisp and clear and the full size keyboard is quite usable. The sound is also very good. It has held up to well to minor abuse. I am also quite pleased with the battery life.

The only short coming is windows 8. It is extremely infuriating. The "metro/modern" interface (the tiles) may have limited usability on a touchscreen (which this is not) but not in any other significant capacity. Navigating through it was an effort in frustration. Additionally, every time my mouse got to the edge or corner of the screen, some kind of windows related pop up would appear. This slowed me down as I waited for it to recede. Additionally, various build in PDF, picture, and video player/viewers were not at all user friendly. Fortunately, I was able to fix most of these issued. By using Adobe PDF reader and VLC video player as the default, I was able to replace the incredibly frustrating native Windows 8 viewers. I was also able to solve the windows 8 usability issue.

While I was researching laptops, I found references by others to a program called CLASSIC SHELL. I had not used windows 8 previous and within 30 seconds of full boot up that it would be a mandatory installation. It installed quite easily and Windows 8 went from being a (to be polite and thereby less accurate) tremendous headache to being usable. It removed the worthless Metro/modern/tile interface, provided a standard start button, allow for disabling of the edge of screen pop ups, and provided easy access to all of Windows functionality. In other words is basically made it like previous versions of Windows. Without CLASSIC SHELL, I would have been forced to return this computer for one with windows 7.

This computer would have rated 5 stars except for the fact that it came with Windows 8. It would have been rated 2 stars except that the problem that is windows 8 was so easily fixed.

Would I recommend this to others? Yes but only with the above mentioned fixes. Otherwise, no. Windows 8 isn't worth the frustration.

I'm still putting it through it's paces, but so far it is working flawlessly. It looks brand new. Far faster than my 4 year old 15" laptop. It has a big, beautiful screen, and a full size number pad along with enough ports to take care of most needs. After a weeks worth of researching, I bought it as it was the best "bang for the buck". I wasn't looking for the fastest, only the best deal I could find. I got it for $450 through another dealer. It came with a 8550mAh HP extended battery. It runs Starcraft II well on low settings. For a another $170 I could have gone with an refurbished Intel machine, but I wasn't interested in paying a premium for the Intel name. I have a desktop that takes care of the programs that need a speedier processor.

I really wasn't expecting such a great looking and great operating laptop like this for the money I paid ($479.00) It can handle multiple tasks at a time, without missing a beat. It's nice to have a number keypad, just like a desktop keyboard. The sound is awesome if you like to listen to music or watch movies. The screen is huge and bright, and the brightness can be adjusted with the F1 and F2 keys. This laplop looks much more expensive than it is, and has a real expensive quality look and feel to it. Lots of ports, including an HDMI port to connect the laptop to my HDTV for Netflex or whatever. The built in integrated webcam gives a very good HD image, and also has a built in stereo mic. I guess the only con, is the weight of this laptop, but in my case, I don't have to lug it around much, so I can live with that. So if you're looking for a fast, efficient, great looking laptop for under $500.00, this is the machine to buy. Time will tell how long this laptop will last, but if it's anything like my desktop HP, it'll run great. Both my desktop and this laptop HP run so quietly...which is great, because I do a lot of studio recording work, and my condenser mics are extremely sensitive to any noise. The laptop arrived within 2 days from ordering, and the unit was very well packed. Set up was a breeze (and I'm technically challenged).

I have had this computer since 2009 and I loved it for the last 4 years but once it began to fall apart

It progressed quickly. First the power cord slot got loose and the connection become iffy. I took it to my local PC repair shop and they tell me it has to be soldered and only HP can do that because it is such a sensitive area, they also said this is a common problem with HP laptops. Then the DVD burner quit working. Then the keys began to stick or break then the mouse pad became sensitive and sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This was not a cheap laptop when first purchased and I expected it to hold up for more than 4 years. I am very disappointed that it seems to have gone into 'self-destruct" mode so soon. And I have not been that hard on it so that it should be falling apart. So if you want a good laptop and won't be troubled by the fact that it probably won't hold up for more than 4 years I would say go for it. Otherwise look for something that is made to last.

Four 2.2 gHz cores and a 17.3 inch screen for just $500 is a nearly unbelievable deal. 6 gigs of memory isn't right, but I replaced them with 16 gigs and added another hard drive. Unlike some other HP laptops, this has a black keyboard, which makes the keys easier to see under low light. Whoever created their hard to see silver keyboard should be horsewhipped.

Refurb machines are an excellent deal, because some tech has actually looked at it and made sure it's working correctly.

I don't care for HP, who lies. When you look at their website, it says you can download a reinstallation disk set, but they won't let you do it. You can make exactly ONE set on your own, and are prevented from making any more. Of course, HP will be glad to sell you a set (more profit for HP), but I resent being lied to. Fortunately, I generally install Linux on my machines and frankly, I hope HP doesn't like it.

The "ultimate gaming machine :) " arrived in the original box , shipping was very fast as always , but ofcourse it better be , because I had to pay 14$ for shiping.

The laptop had no deffects , no dead pixels( something I was very woried about).

I have been using it for about a week now and I can say that I am impressed . Very fast machine , I wish it came with an XP tho , but thats fixable :D

It does get very hot on the left side , but poor thing is just trying to get the heat out! No problems so far from that except some burned leg hair :D

What's intresting is tha price changeing. I bought it for 1279$ , a few days after I recieved it the price went down to 1150$ , and now it's 1380$ or so. You better time your purchuase or you might end up paying more for something that actualy costs less.

I recomend this product to anybody who is willing to pay that much for a laptop , I couldn't find a better deal.

I just bought this from a week ago. The $100 rebate is what motivated me to buy this particular one. The cost is $1,150 after the rebate. This is an excellent deal for the type of hardware loaded. I tried to create similarly configred laptops on Dell site and Sony site. The cost was usually over $1500 for the same type of hardware.

I am taking one star off due to three minor issues (1) weight, (2) bulk, and (3) no multi-touch touchpad. I believe Asus could have make this model (15.6" screen) smaller and lighter and put on a multip-touch touchpad. One of the main reasons that I like Asus is its multi-touch touchpad. I had no idea this model does not come with one until I received it. I was somewhat disappointed and thought about returning it a couple of times. But now, I think I can live without a multi-touch touchapd because its touchpad feels quite solid and high quality.

I am no gamer and I may never play any games with it. But, I need a fast CPU (i7 720 QM) that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I need generous amount of RAM (6 GB). BTW, both the BIOS and CPU-Z reported that it has the 1333 MHz RAM instead the advertized 1066 MHz RAM. I believe this may be arbitrary depending on the supply and cost of RAM at the time of manufacturing. I also need a fast hard drive (7200 RPM). I also want high resolution (1920x1080) to see more content on the screen.

I know its supposedly game-grade graphics capability will go to waste for the way I use it. But it has everything else I want. So, I think I can live with its somewhat cheesy Republic of Gamers deco/logo/lighting on the lid.

Best Deals for ASUS G51JX-X5 Republic of Gamers 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop PC - Dark

Pros:

-----

Well capable machine indeed, I've played Crysis, Battlefield III, Assassin's Creed Revelation and others with no problems, I also have done some 3D rendering with quite a good performance.

Illuminated chiclet keyboard is a plus specially in poorly lit areas, some people would love having a numpad as well.

Screen is beautiful (if you're looking at the right angle!)

Cons/areas of improvement:

--------------------------

Keyboard: Well, if you're a gamer (and you ought to be if you're buying a machine like that!) speed is important, and usually if you lose your contact to the arrow buttons it's easy to get back to them on any other keyboard, since usually there's an empty space around the arrow keys in standard keyboards, unfortunately not this one! I mean why ASUS?! why have you chose a keyboard where the arrow buttons for some unknown reason is quite embedded around the rest of the keyboard keys??! now if you're navigating in game menus, or using the arrows in even some word processor you have to actually look to the keyboard to locate them with your eyes. that wasn't a smart choice of the keyboard layout -period-.

It gets HOT! I wouldn't say this is a major con, if you're a gamer you want your machine to perform and you'd expect some heat to get out of it. I'd strongly suggest buying a cooler along with it.

I don't particularly like having the power socket right beside the network socket, they get in the way of each other when you have one plugged and you want to plug the other.

Screen: the vertical viewing angle (screen tilt) is a major setback for me, if you haven't aligned your screen angle at its best you might be missing some wonderful details in the game, or have an overall 'darker' view. Vertical viewing angle should have been worked on before releasing this strong machine.

Sound: Sometimes the speakers aren't loud enough, I think the sound card is capable though as it becomes really loud if you're using headphones. I had a Toshiba Qosmio before and never had this problem. ASUS should have invested a little bit more in the speakers area as well.

Came from a Toshiba Satellite I had bought from BestBuy. I returned that for $693.03 as this was my replacement. That had an integrated 4200 mobility and a dual core AMD Phenom II. You can't even play games on that or watch 1080p video smoothly. The screen is 1600x900 and was amazing looking but this 1920x1080 is far better. I can even play games with 60 fps if I'm not greedy with graphics. I'm in the process of switching out this CPU from a 720QM to an 820QM. I only spent up to 10 dollars for the switch. I got an 820QM ES for the price I sold the 720QM. In the future I see I will need the 5870 Mobility. It's far better than the 360M. The watts of my laptop is only 120W max. I can't go higher than the 5870 because the watts would exceed 120W. That Toshiba only had 4GB of ram this has 6GB and is way faster and way more bandwidth. It's also 4 core and 8 thread. Clock for clock it's faster too. The difference was up to $150 for the switch to this. The fact I didn't really spend anything to make it 820QM is a huge plus and the fact I can put a 5870 which is far better than the 460M in the $1,400 laptops today for the same price to upgrade now if I choose is another plus. I'm going to wait until the 5870 price drops then I will get that and put it in. This laptop is MXM 3.0b. You can drop a 580GTX in but it's too bad the powersupply cannot power it.

When I first opened the box and saw how amazing the top cover looked I already knew it was worth it. I even see the keys have backlight and light around the keys that are white which no PC keyboard has and has LEDs on the top cover that light up the side and the logo wow. The feel of the touchpad is amazing and the buttons surrounding it as well. The stickers on the palm rest and the palm rest itself look and feel great. I feel the Toshiba, which was already good, is like a Toyota compared to this BMW. Those who been in both and know the difference between those. Screenshots don't say anything like the real thing. I was very reluctant on buying this laptop. I thought it looks bad. See it in real life and damn. I'm glad I bought it.

If you want a basic laptop with excellent price to performance, this is a good choice. Looks and feels sturdy, minimum flex, relatively light, excellent display (fonts could be sharper), very nice keyboard, DVD writer, and enough RAM (4GB) and HD (320 GB) for normal home use. No HDMI port, weak sound, and no fancy bells and whistles. Battery life seems to be reasonable (3 hrs fully charged on a 6-cell battery). Overall, an excellent value for money, especially compared to similarly configured Dell, Sony, or Toshiba (which cost anywhere from $150 to $250 more).

I'll keep this review short and sweet. This laptop is perfect for those looking to do every day tasks.

Pros:

1. Great price for performance. Although I upgraded the SSD, which made a significant improvement, even without the laptop is quick.

2. Easy to upgrade, if desired. Removing the back panel reveals the CPU and hard drive bay. Personally I had a 80GB SSD sitting around from my previous laptop so I replaced the 320GB HD with it. Huge improvement, instantaneous loading is FTW.

3. Good battery life. After a few discharges, I'm currently getting ~3 hours of battery life with non-intensive use.

Cons:

1. Headphone static when laptop is plugged in. Not overwhelming but clearly there. Seems to be a common issue with G560's.

2. Laptop charger cord is a little short. Another foot would have been much appreciated.

Okayfirst things first.

This laptop is NOT high end. I am used to that as I am typing on a 6 year old Everex machine that I have pared down to run very smoothly and has never given my any problems that I did not create. SO. I understand low-end, economy, yet I want it to do the max possible for the dollar. This is it in my opinion. Even though it is not top-notch in some areas, what you get for around $400 or so, I feel is WELL worth this small expense.

Some highlights.

Textured plastic case. No fingerprints. Some have remarked negatively about the touchpad. It is textured as wellthat may be their issue. So, at first, when you are using it, your finger does not slide easily. It is a matter of pressure as I got used to it within a minute.

It is a dual core Pentium, albeit a basic one. No hyperthreading and some of the other tech that takes basic to WOW. Big HDD for the pricespin speed is 5400 on the HDD. Hmmmmm. As it saysfor surfing, burning the occasional disc off, and general computing needs, I think that this does a great job.

We have kids, and I was worried about OneKey restore being right there for all to see on the upper part of the deck above the keyboard! Yikes. Can't disconnect the use of the key (at least I haven't found a way yet), but it can be password protected. So I am cool with that.

It is relatively light @ not quite 6 lbs. Replacement batteries aren't that expensive, and, should you need to go portable around the house, 4 hours is plenty to sit and research something, or do a bit more. Haven't done much else with it, so I may come back and list some other plusses or minuses as they arise.

Bottom linethe computer that this is replacing, another Everex that utterly died after almost all day, everyday use for about 5 years, met our expectations(not exceeded) THIS Lenovo will continue to exceed.

Update: 3.15.2011

Still great. After loading up all that we needed to, our programs, photos, screensaver, extras, catching up on all of the updates from various and sundry places... still GREAT. Web: Browsing is only a second or two delay and then nearly instantaneous on filling out the whole page. Do remember that this machine is not tops on anythingso I find the speed exceptional. I had 3 different programs in various stages of loading, downloading, and installation, and they were all done in lightspeed fashion, with no locking up, no hold ups, no hitches. Done in a New York Minute.

Keyboard is well arranged, responsive, and does not miss a beat. Dual number key pads... sometimes an assistance.

Hate to say it, never been overboard on Microsoft products, but Seven is good. No problems so far, like Vista. Always had to come up with workarounds for that OS. Ugh. Not so here. All set up and customized. Works GREAT and without any hitches with the various Freeware that I use. You know, let me touch on that one.

I have NEVER had a computer crash due to anything other than hardware failure due to heavy use and age. With that said, here are the programs that I like to use, again it is all Freeware, and all of it is from CNET. Here is the list, in order of use to clean up your system entirely:

Free Registry Fix

COMODO System Cleaner

IObit Advanced System Care

Spyware Terminator

IObit Smart Defrag #2 Beta

I find that these programs work very well together, no matter what OS you use from XP through Windows 7, cause no conflicts, and keep your system totally clean of everything, and running as fast as is possible.

Screen quality is great. Very tight for roughly 720 video and picture quality.

Lastlysound quality is great. Once you dive into Windows to customize your setting, you come across an area of sound customization, including I believe 10 band graphic equalizer, or presets like concert, rock, or classical and the likeand, then you can set up the 3d perceptual range and some other functions. Very nice. Makes these little speakers sound so much better, so much more presence, and even, dare I say it, a little note of 3D digitally manipulated Bass? Surprising, but true!

Buy this computer. I love it, and have had an easy time of things using it, setting it up, and the customization of Windows is a lot of fun.

Buy it. I have no cons on this for the price. Not one.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G560 Series 067999U Laptop (Black)

Everything is fine. Looks good. Screen, Keyboard, battery life is good (over 3 hours). Does not get hot however long you use. Lighter than expected. Only the sound quality is a bit dull and low. I would recommend to friends, acquaintances with a tight budget.

So far, this laptop has been wonderful. Windows-7 is a bit of a learning curve if you're used to XP (like I am), but so far it's been simple to use. My only complaint is this product came with some bloat/crapware along with important Lenovo software--I accidentally uninstalled something thinking it was bloatware only to realize it was a needed file (it was Easy-Camera). Re-downloading the needed software resulted in being given the runaround (in the end, I had to download a Vista version of the program because Windows7-64 bit just wouldn't work with the download). It would be nice if Windows would more clearly specify what's an important file versus what's not (not just specifying for system files) so the laymen out there don't accidentally delete things, but oh well.

When the fan blows, it's rather quiet. I haven't had any issues of the laptop overheating. The speed is wonderful, too, very fast. The image quality and sound is pretty good, I haven't had much problems compared to the other reviews. What's also interesting is you have the option to create a face-recognition log-in using the camera instead of signing it; it's a neat touch.

For those who use word-processing files, you'll have to either buy Office or go with something like Openoffice instead (the latter of which I did). This laptop also comes with McAfee, which I ditched that in favor of Spybot and Avira; it's best to go with your personal preference for virus/spyware protection.

Overall, I'm VERY pleased with the quality of this laptop. Highly recommended!

I haven't had a new computer in a while (the last one I had was a school-issued Thinkpad) and initially wanted a Mac. I got this instead because it was in my price range, and glad I did. I've only had it a few days so far but I totally love it. Windows 8 does take some time getting used to but it's not complicated. The processor is fast, I love the "rapid wake" feature, the graphics are beautiful and the screen is vibrant with minimal glare. Also like the sleek aluminum casing. I bought a silicone keyboard cover to go with it. Overall I would definitely recommend.

The only con I can think of is that the webcam is kinda low quality, but since I have a digital camera & I only use my computer's for skype it hasn't bothered me much.

I needed a new laptop so I did some research on what to buy. At first, I was fooled by excellent reviews for Mac Book Pro and I bought it, only to return it later. I didn't like the operating system (complicated and frustrating). Now I've got this Sony machine and I LOVE IT!!! I was a little skeptical about Windows 8 but it only took me about an hour to get used to it. It's very user friendly. I'm a small business owner and I really like the fact that when I need to use the computer it'll reboot in 5 seconds and all the apps that I use the most are right in front of me. Productivity matters, right?

Also, when you mention Sony the first thing that comes to my mind is quality. I've owned quite a few Sony products over the number of years and the quality was always excellent. I'm pretty confident that this product will be in the same category.

3battery life less than 3.5 hours.

by the way , with those dis advance still its on the top of ultra-book list as design , features, screen size , buttons sensitivities , etc.

For the price, this is an amazing value. The case, while made primarilly of plastic, isn't cheesy at all. The lid is made of aluminum and looks very nice, like units costing much more. The keyboard layout with the 10 key fits the shell well, the bonus is that the keys are separated from each other so there's less chance of getting stuff down between the keys nice! There are 2 USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port. The built in camera is adequate, the memory at 4GB is perfectly sized for this price range. I'm honestly surprised by how quick this AMD processor is, it's almost as fast as my Intel quadcore (non-hyperthreaded) 2.67 Ghz desktop. All nice features for a laptop in this price range. The primary reason for this purchase was to use it to browse the internet and email along with the occasional spreadsheet/word document. It performs beyond expectation in that catagory. Other benefits of this laptop are the bottom stays cool when running, and the battery life is great, about 5+ hours of use without recharging.

As an aside, it comes loaded with Windows 8, which admittedly takes a little getting used to. I can see after working with this OS that it would be beneficial to have a touch screen interface. It works okay without one after you get used to the quirks of Win8 and the "gestures" that you use to open the start screen, like swipe in to the touch pad from the computer shell on the right side, or switch applications by swiping in to the touch pad from the computer shell on the left side. The top down swipe motion in context sensitive. For non-touch screen computers I'd prefer it if Microsoft put the Win7 start menu back on the desktop interface. On touch screen based computers I'm sure I'd rather use the Win8 "start" interface.

At this point although early in the game I'm very happy with the results.

The laptop itself is light and sleek looking. The feel of it is good and solid and the keyboard is similar to a Mac in its spacing and design. They are separated by a bit of space that would make it easier to clean. The battery life is pretty long. I've been using it on a single charge for about 6.5 hrs now and still have 25% remaining. The screen is pretty nice and crisp. Colors are nice and vivid. I haven't watched HD videos yet but so far it seems good.

The laptop comes preinstalled with windows 8. I don't mind it but I believe that Microsoft really intended for windows 8 to be use with a touch screen devise. You can go back to windows 7 if you choose by going to the Samsung website and following their instructions. I just received mine today so I'm going to give W8 a try.

The bad thing I can say about this model is that the mouse pad is not sensitive. I have to tap pretty hard for it to double click or even respond. The mouse pad response time is relatively slow compared to how fast I'm moving my fingers to items I want to click on. The computer also does not have a light or any kind of signal that would tell you whether number lock or caps lock is on. I used to have a Toshiba Satellite and I would say that I prefer Toshiba's mouse pad over this one.

Overall I would say that its a good laptop but it does take some getting used to. If you want a sensitive mouse pad that highly responsive I would advise you not to get this model. Other than that it seems like a good device. I'll post another review in about a month so you can see how it holds up to a Biology major/English Minor college student usage.

One Month Later: I ended up returning the laptop in favor of purchasing an Acer Aspire V5 due to all the problems I was having with the laptop. Some programs that I needed to run for my homework were unable to work. The processor speed scored a 2.2 out of 9 and I was unable to speed it up. Others buyers say that their laptop was great so maybe my unit was just faulty. On the positive side, Samsung customer service is great even though they couldn't help me much whenever I spoke to them.

Honest reviews on Samsung Series 3 NP365E5C-S02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

This laptop is fast and quiet. The wifi is ready to work while the start screen appears (very fast)... W8-64bit, the USB3.0 ports are much faster than 2.0 and this is a plus ! ! I was continously working a little more than 4 hours and the battery said 10%. I doubt another laptop with this kind of performance ! ! ! The W8 is completely different to the previous versions, and it is fast ! ! Now, I like it.... So this a new paradigm. We must adapt to do the same things in a different way. The aluminium body is great ! !

I bought this explicitly for using as a budget HTPC. I didn't need Blu-Ray or long battery life because I intended to park it on my components and plug it into my big screen via HDMI. I did need a computer with good graphics and a pc that was powerful enough to run flash and HD video without hiccuping. Picked this up yesterday and by the time I had the OS decrappified of all of the junk software they add to these budget computers I was up and running and connected to my entertainment center and watching youtube on the big screen in no time.

I'll leave some updates later but here are a few important things to keep in mind.

1. There is a little button above the touchpad that turns it on and off. Make sure it's on before you freak out.

2. You have to touch the wireless icon in order to turn on the wireless card. It glows red and changes color to blue when it's on and it's touch sensitive.

Both points aren't made clear in the manual.

This laptop was my daughters graduation gift..now 15 months later it's a desktop unless I pay HP over $300 dollars(original cost $550) to repair the LCD screen. Oh and to ease the pain of having to pay $300 for the repair for just $1 more they will throw in a year of free tech support..WOOHOOO!!!Very dissapointed in this purchase. If you have or are planning on buying a HP get the extended warranty you will need it.

Best Deals for HP Pavilion DV4-2045DX 14.1" Notebook (2.20 GHz AMD Turion II

The HP dv4-2045dx has an abundance of features that makes it a great value for its price. I upgraded from my older Windows Vista-based HP notebook and immediately noticed a more stable and faster operating environment with the dv4-2045dx, which comes with 4GB of RAM and a 7200-rpm hard drive. While shopping for my new notebook, I found most competing models in the same price range to have only 3GB of RAM and a 5400-rpm hard drive. Further, the HP dv4-2045dx comes with a dedicated memory card, as opposed to the shared video memory of many other models in this price range. The aesthetics of the notebook are very slick, as is typical of HP notebooks. This model has a sleek white finish, and I personally find the 14.1" screen to offer the perfect blend of portability (feels much noticeable lighter than 15" and 17" notebooks) and usability (keyboard not cramped like my 10" netbook). The keys have a nice tactile feel, although the touchpad of this model (like other HP notebooks I've owned) has more than optimal friction. The speakers are suitable for general purpose use, although if you like listening to iTunes, I'd get a set of external speakers. As is common these days, the notebook comes bundled with a lot of third-party software which I'd just assume strip from my computer.

To summarize my thoughts, this computer provides tremendous value and relatively strong computing power for its price range. There are a lot of little features (such as the 7200-rpm hard drive, e-SATA port, dedicated graphics memory, etc.) that aren't typically found on a notebook in this price range. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this model again.

Pros:

+ Relatively powerful AMD Turion x2 Dual Core processor at 2.2 ghz

+ Dedicated graphics card

+ 4GB RAM

+ Windows 7 64-bit is a tremendous improvement over slow Windows Vista

+ Nice blend of portability and usability

+ 7200-rpm, 320GB hard drive

+ e-SATA interface allows you to take advantage of faster external hard drives

+ HDMI out

Cons:

No bluetooth

Uses DDR2 RAM instead of DDR3 RAM like Intel Core Duo 2

I purchased this computer at Best Buy. Apparently thier return policy states.

Exchange or return your item anytime from the original purchase date within the timeframe below:

*14 days for computers, monitors, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, iPads, tablets and radar detectors

Nice. So I bring my brand new laptop (I had'nt even web surfed with this computer yet just wrote on word) on the 15th day because the computer suddenly started to show the blue screen of death and then the computer stopped turning on. They ran in store test, diagnostics, etc... The GEEK Sqaud guy decided that it was my Hard Drive. He said the Hard Drive could cost anywhere from 200$ or more. Hearing this, after I just dropped money for this brand new computer was EXTREMELEY AGGARVATING. He said on top of the Hard Drive Cost, Best buy would charge 150$ to send it out, to DOUBLE CHECK that it was in fact the Hard Drive.

The manager at Best Buy wouldnt budge to refund or even exchange it... and all she could say was I'm Sorry.

I called HP, sat on the phone with a Help Desk agent (who I couldnt understand) for 3.5 hours of Troubleshooting. Once the agent realized that he couldnt fix the computer over the phone, he then accidently but conviently disconnected the phone call. Apparently the HP warranty is a year but it is THIS much work just to get the computer through the warranty process. When I called back, the new agent wanted me to go through the same troubleshooting steps. I was irrate.

Lets just say, I AM NEVER BUYING ANYTHING FROM HP OR BEST BUY EVER, EVER, AGAIN. Worst Service, horrible product.

The best way to describe this computer: junk.

Purchased from Best Buy in Dec 2009, and it just died this last weeked, May 6, 2011. The computer will constantly turn off and will only start up for about 1-2 seconds before shutting down again. Most forums indicated that this is either hard drive, motherboard (due to overheating), or fan needs cleaned. I ordered an external enclosure for the hard drive off Newegg so I can pull the data off no matter the outcome, but decided to see if I could clean the fan. In order to get to the fan on a HP Pavilion laptop, you have to dissasemble the ENTIRE computer. To do this, you really need a plastic "case cracker" tool, which you can find in a Zune Repair kit (google it). I ended up just using a butter knife. There are quite a few youtube videos that will walk you through the process. This youtube video was the most thorough:

HP DV4 Take Apart / Disassembly to Clean CPU Fan

I even took pictures as I went, but ended up with a few extra screws when done, and it didn't fit back together that well (keyboard). Either way, it didn't help and it wasn't the fan, even though the fan was dirt. I'm almost positive it's not the hard drive, since it would startup and I could use the computer off and on the last few days. I think the motherboard just died, which seems to be a common problem with this laptop.

My Acer gave out. But Acers are starting to rise in price so when I came across this, I gave it a long look and then bought it. Screen is sharp and clear but a bit marginal if you're into HD. The OD is dual layer super multi, but won't manage blu ray. Speakers are the best I've heard on a laptop. Keyboard is okay. I'd say really good if the right shift key weren't abbreviated in order to accommodate the number pad. The negatives? One. Not nearly enough USB ports. I've got a Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra-Mini Hubfor USB2 but not 3 so I'll be putting more money in it eventually. Still, it's very good computer at a very reasonable price and what else can you ask for?

5/27/2013 I just discovered another plus. Win 8 forces you (at the moment) to hover your mouse near the upper right of your screen in order to bring up what replaces the start menu. This Asus X55A computer has an upgraded touch-pad that allows you to swipe solving a vexing irritant (Hovering to find controls). I now raise my rating to 4.8 because 1 USB 2.0 and one v3.0 are simply not enough unless you have hubs or a fancy external monitor with additional ports. For this "frugal" shopper, that's a serious negative.

Just bought a unit of this today for the function that its has to offer and for it's price. it's got a built-in nvida card that allows me to play my online games smoothly and watch movies seamlessly. it's a bit heavy to be honest, but I won't complain about it because it has a 15+ inch display plus a good hardware spec to carry me through out the day.

Best Deals for ASUS X55A X55A-DS91 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

For the price, it's unbeatable. It's thin, light, and has a great battery life. It has had no problems running anything yet, except Knights of the Old Republic 2, but that's because the game is old and I need to find some sort of compatibility fix. I have had no problems running the 3D modelling software known as Blender. It's also very pretty. The keys are responsive and the entire mouse pad clicks which makes it very easy to drag and drop stuff and use internet (a laptop first).

No disk drive though. That means it's borderline impossible to fix the true problem with this thing. Windows 8. The OS is such a terrible mess. I shouldn't have to use a search function to open notepad or calculator. The start button was kind of essential. I tried installing Ubunutu and Windows 7, but due to changes in how Windows 8 boots, Ubuntu can't work. Windows 7 can get some of the way, but you have to make a custom install image because it doesn't natively have USB 3 drivers, so your usb install stick won't work after the first install reboot.

So, as I said above, the hardware is fantastic. The OS is crap. If I had known that it would be almost impossible to remove Windows 8 I would not have bought this computer.

Got this factory refurbished at Best Buy for $499, (could get for about same price here, but wanted to have their 14 day "touchy feely" period to try it out at home and see if I liked it. I've been researching laptops for awhile, Amazon is always helpful for customer reviews, and I found Cnet.com and PCmagazine.com the best for expert reviews. But no matter how much research that you do, you will always find people who absolutely love each model, (or brand) or hate it. Other reviewers of this computer on other sites absolutely raved about both it and the HP brand ... many said that they only would purchase HP's because they had bad experiences when they tried another brand. But I think a lot of it comes down to individual expectation, experience, and preferences. Personally, I love this laptop. The 14" screen is a perfect size for having it on my lap while curled up on the couch, and it's thin/small size makes it easy to carry along with me. I love how light it is, (around 4.4 pounds?) some of the others I was looking at were right at 5 pounds, and you wouldn't think that would make much of a difference, but each time I pick it up I'm amazed by how light it is. It made with sturdy design no cheap plastic here. I really like the media keys up top, (volume) ... on my husband's brand new Samsung i7 laptop he has to use 2 hands to push the function key along with media key, while I can just hit media key alone. Little things, but I like it. I like the mouse pad as well, just enough sensitivity for me, (unlike my husband's Samsung, which isn't sensitive enough but that is one of those personal preferences that will be different for everyone. I am currently unemployed, so the computer is running 15 straight all day, every day, and I find that it runs very cool and quiet ... very different than my previous dell laptop which ran very hot and loud. I really wanted the WiDi technology so that I could watch the free hulu tv shows on my hdtv instead of my computer without needing cables, (this looks so awesome, by the way!) You'd be hard pressed to find another Intel i5 Core Processor for under $500. The only thing I wish it had was a backlit keyboard. But the pro's of this awesome laptop far outways the cons. I'm so happy that I bought it!!

Added note on 1/23/12: I wanted to come back and add to this review now that I've had a few more months to "play" with my new laptop. I'm still thrilled with it I'd increase my review to 6 stars if I had the option. It continues to runs cool and silent, no matter how long it's been on. The sound and picture are both great. It is incredibly light and has a long battery life. I continue to love the stand alone media keys. I also like that they have a "HP support" link right on the computer, where I have the option of having an online chat with a real person at HP anytime, and if I'm having a specific technical issue with my computer, I can give my pc permission to transfer data to a HP support technician so they can help me resolve my issue. I haven't had to use this feature yet, and hope I never will, but it's nice knowing it's there. The only thing it's missing is backlit keys. Other than that, for my needs it's perfect! I absolutely love it!

This was not my first laptop. I have had many laptops over the years and this has been one of the very best. The durable aluminum construction is very stylish. Movies look and sound great! I would highly recommend buying this computer for anyone. It is a great buy. You get a lot of bang for your buck.

The speakers are such poor quality that I have to turn them waaay down just to watch a video of people talking or else you'll hear static as though the speakers will give out soon.

My other big gripe is that the screen doesn't tilt back past 90 degrees so unless you keep you laptop at chin level, it's really uncomfortable to look at.

Sure, it's fast and light and looks great, but in this day and age, there are plenty of other models that are just as good and don't have these problems. CHOOSE A DIFFERENT LAPTOP. (HP even has some models that are comparable and better for around the same price).

After 2 months of light use, the hard drive crashed on this PO$ computer. Overheats and knocks out the hard drive. This problem is apparently intrinsic to this HP model. There are many versions of this laptop

main differences:

Processor speed from 1.73G dual core to 2.26G dual core

Memory size it has two DDR2 slots and may have up to 4G of memory simple upgrade

Video card the most important

It may have 256m or 512M NVidia chip which makes it fast enough for a gaming laptop. Unfortunately with NVidia chip there is good chance of overheating and video problems. Using of a cooling pad is essential

The other version I had was equipped with 128M ATI video card no problems reported so far

It may also use Intel Video chipset great for basic needs

Screens some laptops have 1920x1400 screens, some 1440x900 all screens are reliable and bright

DVD-CD drives any combinations of CD-RW/DVD-RW are possible, upgrade is simple

No webcam, no HDMI port, but DVI port on a back

Hard drive any 2.5" SATA hard drive may be installed from 80G to 500G

Sound really good with a subwoofer on a bottom

Battery battery life is not great, 1 hour is typical

In general a great reliable laptop and desktop replacement
