I am wondering if the reviewer who gave the one star is knowledgeable at all about computers. I design them and I have to say the low power cpu, 15 w compared to one using much more translates into long battery life. Face it if you just use a base number and say it is terrible, you dont understand that the cpu speed scales with need. most time in a computer the cpu does little and its response is not required to be fast for those tasks as it is wasting power. this cpu can run from 1.8 to over 3 ghz depending on the need and allowing lower power consumption. The new Haswell processor also has a number of features that make it more efficient at lower speed meaning to accomplish a task it does not need to run as fast as an older processor to do the same work. Maybe the person giving only one star works for apple, or maybe is just computer illiterate but either way it is saddening to see ranting rather than facts in reviews.

Low power CPU's are usually more expensive and have lower speed. Most of MacBook Air use these family of CPUs.

If you want higher speeds, then it will overheat like an oven where you can fry an egg.

So, choice is yours. I prefer low power CPUs. Now they are able to make up to 2GHZ and 3GHz in turbo mode based on current available technology.

No VGA port? It has just the one HDMI port and I think this means it is impossible to have an extended desktop on dual external monitors? If this is the case, this is a show stopper in my opinion as I work with dual monitors while docked at work.

I really adore this mobile computer. I am a mobile person and the size is perfect for every day commuting and long-distance travel; it has a small footprint and can fit on any surface be it an airplane seat tray or a lap. The computer does not have a disc drive (which I think is a plus), freeing it to be made very thin; it is not Macbook Air thin, but still very thin. One of my favorite features is the touchpad. It recognizes Apple like gestures and is free from the casing, so that it can physically move up and down when pressed. This gives it a very responsive feel akin to the Apple touchpad. The keyboard has keys separated by the case molding. It is not a full size keyboard, but I find the Chiclet-like keys helps prevent pressing more than one key at a time when typing; it also looks very cool.

I like a fast computer and this Acer has a lot horsepower for its price range since it has an Intel Core i5, instead of a Core i3. This means it comes with Intel's Turbo Boost technology. I believe the Turbo Boost makes a big difference in a laptop where power consumption is directly related to battery life. Most of the time a lot of horsepower isn't needed, e.g. web surfing, so battery power is saved. But when you need to open or run a demanding program like MATLAB (you'll see I love MATLAB) then Turbo Boost really shines and everything will run faster.

I took this computer to another level by upgrading to a solid-state hard drive and highly recommend this. The SSD makes boot up incredibly fast. (Note about installing Windows via USB: Format a USB (>4GB) with FAT32. Then extract a Windows Installation ISO to the USB using 7-zip. Super simple :)(Note 2: or use Clonezilla to clone the Windows that ships with the drive onto the new one.). With this setup the computer is very snappy. The computer boots in about 5 seconds. MATLAB opens on my laptop faster than my desktops!

I did not want to spend more than $800 on a new laptop. This laptop perfectly fits my computing needs and wants without breaking the budget. I think it is as cool as a computer can be without being a Macbook, which this computer clearly used as an inspiration. I don't believe in spending top-of-the-line money for laptops, because the dollar goes further in a desktop and laptops don't have as much longevity due to wear and tear (I'm pretty rough on laptops. They get banged around in my backpack when I bike around or travel). However, being unwilling to spend enough can result in an impotent laptop: more than a Chromebook (which are awesome in their own way, but specialized), yet not quite powerful enough for doing more than surf the web, write docs, and make slides; having a computer powerful enough to run MATLAB (or a similarly demanding program like Photoshop) was important to me. The Aspire V5-171 has met my needs and surpassed my expectations. It represents a fantastic value: it combines computing power and great aesthetics into a very convenient and mobile form factor.

The only caveat I can think of is this is not a "gamer's" laptop. However, it has the best integrated graphics chip Intel offers and will play a lot of modern games on the lowest visual settings at decent frame rates.

Finally, there are a few miscellaneous features that further prove how this laptop is the complete package. In addition to an HDMI port, there is also a VGA port. I think it is great to have both, because there is now the flexibility of giving a presentation on an HD screen or an older projector without needing to tote around extra adapters. There is also a USB 3.0 port to help future proof this machine. Another nice unheralded feature is the power cord, which does not have a "Ghostbusters brick". Instead it has the adapter plug directly into the wall; this seems to have reduced the size of the power cord and represents to me less of a trip hazard. My only wish is that the power cord would connect to the laptop using a magnet ala Apple (the ultimate in trip prevention), but I don't mind so much because this laptop comes in at such a nice price.

Funny that companies are trying to make these smaller laptops seem like something new. They were everywhere a few years ago; with screen sizes from 7 to 14" and simply called netbooks. For whatever reason, at the time, they bombed and just didn't sell so they were discontinued by most major manufacturers. Skip ahead just a couple years and tablets popped up on the scene and as of the time of this writing (7-14-13) are all the rage. And guess what the screen sizes are...7-10". While I think they are a great form of entertainment (I purchased one myself, an Asus 10.1 Transformer currently their top of the line for almost a year).

While tablets come in a variety of sizes and are very easy to use (their big selling point) they really are suited for entertainment primarily. The public has finally starting noticing this and even through you can add a keyboard to a tablet, it still is very limited using "real world" applications. While many people have written programs (apps) to try to expand their usefulness, a word processor or spreadsheet on a tablet is far more complicated than on a Mac or PC. Thus the resurrection of what people now refer to as "smaller computers" (a.k.a., netbooks).

I write reviews and articles for a variety of blogs and yes, even newspapers (contrary to popular belief they do still exist though the number is dwindling fast). I tried using my top-of-the-line Asus tablet with a variety of word processing applications and while I'm looking for a program with all the features I need, salespeople seem to be programed to talk about nothing but "pinch and zoom" and the gigantic 32 Gig of storage memory they contain. No matter what you ask them they always bring the subject back to that. It's like dangling shiny trinkets in front of a baby and listening to them "oooo" and "ahhh" over the pretty shiny things. Kids, time to grow up.

While tablets certainly have made a place for themselves and at the moment are continuing to grow in popularity they really are most practical for entertainment and not productivity. I'm not saying you can't send off an e-mail or edit a document but to write a 5 or 6 page article (even if you have a keyboard for your tablet as I, myself do) you really need something with a little more power and better design...at least for writing. And that means a fully functional word processor, be it MS Word, Open Office. But many times, in writing articles, when I start in the research phase I might have 20 tabs open in a browser, a word processing program, a drawing program with something as simple as clip art open as well. Guess what happens to a tablet (mine actually has 64 gig of ram). What happens is that it comes to a screeching halt.

I have a quad core, 15" laptop and a quad core desktop that uses wireless keyboard, mouse and even dictation software so when I am home I barely have to touch the keyboard. Oh, and the screen is a 50" diagonal flat panel. There isn't anything I can't do with my home system. Now the problem; I'm not always home. I don't know how many people have tried carrying a 15" laptop (with power brick) and other accessories around all day but by afternoon my shoulders feel like they are going to fall off. Thus the need for something smaller but not too small.

First stop, as always, Amazon to hunt for something more practical for my particular needs. I looked a Chromebooks (those are basically netbooks that use the Google operating system). Problem is that everything has to be done in a browser and Google's word processor isn't very powerful and as I said, I may have 20 tabs open at once. Google's browser answer for this, since it creates a lack of memory, is to close (and no it doesn't ask it it's okay) the oldest tab. And while there are supposed to be ways to bring them back it just doesn't always work. In reading reviews on Chromebooks I kept seeing the same comments over and over. Why does Asus produce netbooks with 4 gig of ram and a 320 gig hard drive since it really has no use for anything that big since it stores almost everything you do on the web. So I wrote the model numbers of a few down and searched Amazon for them. Sure enough, there was the exact same computer that had been used for Chromebooks but with Windows 8 as the operating system.

I made my lists and compared and decided on this machine. While it claims to have a 5 hour battery life, in reality it is more like 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The reason for this however is because they are showing most of the specs of Chromebooks that have very low-end processors that don't need much energy to run while this computer replaced these low-end processors with and Intel Core i5. With the entire line of Intel processors, this is the second from the top of the line. It is fast and even has a turbo mode so that if you are over-taxing the processor it literally kicks in to overdrive and gives a little extra boost as needed. I've been working on it for about a month and with a browser open with 32 tabs, a word processor and a spreadsheet (and playing music in the background) it has only kicked in once! It also has 6 gig of ram to support all those open windows. I may upgrade it to 8 gig but at this point I am not sure it's really even necessary.

The keyboard is also worth mentioning. While my 15" laptop has a full sized keyboard with a separate numeric keypad, this computer has only the full sized keyboard and no separate numeric keypad. But then that cuts about 3-4" off its size. I have been asked why I didn't just get a Macbook Air (super slim and lightweight + another $1000). So I decided to opt for the Acer V5. I even purchased an external DVD drive since this computer doesn't have one built in and contrary to the "knowledgeable" salespeople who tell me that no computers will have them in another year since everything can be downloaded, I disagree. The drive is 1/2 inch thick and runs right off the power from the usb port you plug it in to. A couple people also said that software would be delivered in thumbdrives (usb sticks). I reminded them all that people have been saying that one for about 2 years. Other than a couple programs, everything I've seen that isn't a download comes on that other thing that will be discontinued if you listen to them...a DVD! As I said, no keypad but the rest of the keys are the "chiclet" style keys with ample space between them that your fingers don't hit the wrong keys (some chiclet style keyboards are so close together that they are more of a solid, flat and connected row of keys and it is difficult to keep track of where "home row" is for typing.

This computer has a 500 gig hard drive in it. I have considered swapping it out for a SSD however the speed that this computer has at start up is actually quite fast for a standard hard drive and from the time I hit the power button, while an SSD might have it up and running in 15 seconds, it has never taken more than a minute to be up and ready to use. And for the cost of a 500 gig SSD, I can wait another 45 seconds longer.

It does come with the usual assortment of partially cripples games, trial period software for the major programs. But I always make my first project on any computer to 1st, make a back up of the operating system in case something should go wrong (forgot to tell the salespeople about that one no DVD or usb stick and if the computer dies, you can't go on line to download the operating system). The 2nd thing I always do is delete all the garbage software and finally, the 3rd thing to do before adding my own software is to defrag the hard drive after just erasing so much junk.

The screen is bright and clear. You would have a hard time counting pixels. For those who don't like non-reflective screen, you'll need to buy one of those clear, plastic non-glare screen covers because this screen, as beautiful as it looks is almost impossible to see in a brightly lit room. Not because the screen is dim but because it is so highly reflective. But you can get an anti-glare screen on line, almost anywhere. They go on like the clear plastic screen protectors do. Just slide them on and try not to get air bubbles under them.

While this doesn't have a DVD drive built in, it does have a network port, 3 usb ports, a SD card slot and an HDMI port. At the rear of the PC (where the hinge for the screen is located) the height when closed is just under an inch and at the front it's about a little more than a half inch. I put my 10 inch tablet on top of it and it was 3/4 of an inch longer and 3/4 of an inch deeper. So size-wise it's almost the size of my tablet. I actually carry both in my computer bag.

Lastly, a friend asked if it got hot sitting in my lap? Answer is: warm. It's never gotten so hot (like my larger laptop) that I thought I would burn my legs. And besides, for convenience sake I also have a small stand that folds flat (also fits the computer bag) that is designed to put the computer on if you are in bed or sitting in a chair. That allows a little air to flow beneath it. It has a fan built in but it is barely noticeable, especially if you are playing music.

Actually, this is the last thing: the speakers are mediocre at best. You have 2 choices really. You can use a set of headphones and the sound is full and clear. I'm not big on wearing headphones while I work so I spent $18 (also found here on Amazon) and purchased X-Mini II XAM4-B Portable Capsule Speaker. Strange looking. I looks like a small pod/half a ball (hard to describe) but it is a small external speaker that you just plug into your headphone jack (it has a built in battery and I've used it on a single charge for 11 hours one day) and while you aren't going to get Bose quality sound out of it, the highs and lows are nice and clear. If you want to spend about 1/2 to 3/4 more $ you can also get it in a blue tooth version so you don't have to play with an extra wire. The only reason I didn't get that one myself was because while it pairs up to your computer with no problem and sounds as good as the wired version; again, it has a built in battery but since the battery has to power bluetooth as well as the speaker, it only runs for about 5 hours before needing a recharge. My career is built around the computer so I use it much more than most people so I liked the less expensive model, not because it cose less but because I get 11 of play time out of it.

Hope this has been of help to someone looking at it, one way or another. It is a great little computer but is just big enough that you don't feel like your trying to work on a toy. And with a core i5 processor, 6 gig of ram and a 500 gig hard drive if you are looking for a physically smaller computer (something that can produce real work), it's a great machine.

It might be helpful to describe my PREVIOUS computer. For the last two plus years I have been using an Acer one, 10.5" notebook. I had upgraded the ram to 2 GB. I never had anything that small before, but really I liked the size, and also the ACER quality (for the price).

I did a lot of research before I bought this new ACER. I'm a tightwad and I didn't want to pay for any more than I needed. After the first week I am totally pleased.

One of the problems with the previous notebook was the undersized keys and keyboard. The move up to 11.5 inches has allowed for full sized, fully spaced keys. I'm a writer and I need a real keyboard that I can use anywhere. Someone else referred to these keys as "chiclets". Yes, they protrude up individually through the casing. They're very easy to type on. It verges on fun. The only thing that concerns me is that they may accumulate dirt, which may be difficult to get out. But, that can't be any worse than most other keyboards.

I don't do any gaming; So, the 6 GB is really great. The processor and RAM are quite adequate for word processing, spreadsheets, surfing, and watching Netflix.

It is super slim, portable and very light. Note, however, that the power cable is on the right side. I would prefer the left, but it's not a big deal.

The screen quality is very good for the price. The size of the screen is perfect. It is the smallest possible screen for a real keyboard. It is big enough for all the programs to run without size problems.

In regard to software: I was very skeptical of W8. I spent 3 or 4 hours familiarizing myself with it. I finally got it set up. Basically I only see the APPS screen when I boot. I go straight from there to a (more or less) familiar window's desktop. It's working OK, but I'm thinking about defecting to Linux Ubuntu.

I also may install an SSD drive when I do that. This is not because I am dissatisfied with what came in the box. I think it's a great value for what I paid.

Now, a word to the wise about MS office. MS is really trying to rope everyone who needs office into annual fees, high prices, and so forth. I refuse to do it.

I first tried Open Office, but soon learned that they (apache? I think) are not keeping it up. I had trouble with migrating excel files and formatting. But, Libre Office is really great. They're on top of it. It's open source. It's free and it works. It doesn't have all the features of the later versions of office, but for my needs, it is just fine.

I would give this laptop a Four except that its battery life is quite poor. After adjusting the power settings for minimum power, I have trouble getting more than three hours from it. Acer should have give it a larger battery. Acer doesn't have a larger battery available for after market either.

I'm a software engineer and professional Linux user. I was a little nervous about buying this machine, because I have had bad luck in the past with hardware compatibility on very lightweight machines. There was no need to worry, practically everything works perfectly (see notes at the end of the review).

** Fit and Finish **

It looks nice. Actual metal would have been nicer, but it's close enough. The keyboard feels a little sloppy, and you'll notice odd clicking sounds in the keys from time to time. This is most of where the lost one star is. I wasn't expecting much from a chiclet board on a computer this thin, but I know that it could have been done better.

** Battery Life **

With low display brightness, but performing regular tasks, I was able to get about the advertised five hours of battery life. On Windows, I would expect about an hour less.

** Graphics **

The CPU and onboard graphics are very powerful, especially given the size of the computer. I was able to run Counter-Strike: Source with 60-200 FPS on the recommended settings. For a machine I don't expect to do any gaming on, that's impressive. Naturally, this allows for smooth video playback. Display resolution being 1366x768 on the 11" LCD, the pixel density is good. The viewing angle of the LCD is poorer than I was expecting, and may impact your ability to use the computer when it's not directly in front of you.

** Audio **

The speakers are absolutely awful. With how thin the computer is, this is not a surprise. You will need headphones if you want to actually listen to something.

** Overall **

It's a solid machine. Great value for the price, extremely portable and powerful. I would recommend this to anyone.

Technical Notes: Tested Crunchbang Waldorf, with a Debian Jessie (Linux 3.10) base. I needed to modprobe a couple of modules in order to get the wireless card working correctly (see instructions at the bottom of the page here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2124592). The touchpad may need a special input configuration file for xorg in order to enable right clicking/click and drag.

This computer is great. I had another Asus notebook which I loved...until I crushed it in an iguana accident. But this one is even better. It has all the specs mentioned in the title (though hard drive is more like 454 gigs not 500). The keyboard has a great light-up feature for use in the dark. That was a nice surprise. Palm rests are comfy and don't show finger prints, nor does the rest of the computer (It's not made of that shiny plastic so it won't show dust and prints as much). I don't know why the description says dark red though, it's black. Speakers are nice and clear and get loud enough for me at about 44 percent.

Internet speed is ok. It's not lightning fast but you won't wait more than six seconds for a page to load. It's always good to download Google Chrome. It's faster than Internet Explorer. Overall speed is good and boots pretty quickly.

The experience index is 3.3. I've only played The Sims 3 on it and it performs just fine. If you're a serious pc gamer or are into all that high maintenance software take your chances or look elsewhere.

It comes with Microsoft office 2010 so I recommend having an office 2010 product key handy (make sure you buy the disk version. The card is only good for one install).

As for bloat-ware there are a few things from amazon, Asus, and a game company. Check them out, and if you want them keep them. If you don't want it uninstall them. It's not rocket surgery.

It has a free trial for trend micro which I'm currently using for security, no problems so far but I've only had it for 10 hours. It will harass you about backing up your system at every start up. You can disable this but backing up is always a good idea. Just make sure you have at least 5 blank DVDs if you decide to do this.

I'm not sure about battery life, at least 3 hours.

Sorry I'm not a computer geek (no disrespect geeks are awesome) so I can't get any more specific than that.

As a young college student on a budget I would totally get this again.

Description:

This is a superb sub $1,500 laptop. The video card (Nvidia GTX 660, 2GB) is better than the one in the 15" Macbook Pro w/Retina (Nvidia GT 650, 1GB) -shame on you Apple -and the processor is also amazing. The screen is also nice, but as other have pointed out, it's nothing special. Mine came with a dead pixel, which I was pretty upset about, but it eventually went away with the use of free software.

I am able to edit videos without any problem using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and editing photos is also a breeze. Using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other programs for creating and publishing content also works very well. Frankly, this is a better buy over any Macbook.

The design isn't something I was too excited about when looking at the pictures but in person it's actually not that bad. I prefer the sleek look of the Macbook Pros, but the price tag and increased performance this laptop gives me is worth more than its looks.

Upgradeability is an important factor in this laptop. You can upgrade it from 8GB RAM to 16GB which I plan on doing, as well as adding a mSSD for caching purposes (for even faster performance) and, potentially, replacing the CD/DVD drive with a HDD bay. We'll see.

Bottom line:

Get this laptop if you want a large but powerful gaming/video editing laptop. Not for people who want ultra portability and long battery life.

Has the mSATA slot, Full HD 1920X1080p screen and a WD Black 7200rpm HDD. When I was looking at buying a laptop I read a lot of reviews about this and other similar laptops. I couldn't find a definite answer whether this particular model had the mSATA or not. It does. The procedure to migrate is pretty simple. This comes with the MSI BurnRecovery software which makes recovery DVD's that restores your HDD image. I needed 5 DVD-R's to do this. After I made those I removed the stock HDD (Western Digital Black 7200rpm) and installed a Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT120GB-DX mSATA 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) drive. Need to find a screw to secure the mSATA because the drive does not come with one and you cannot install without it. It's the same screw that would secure a mini card like a wireless card, modem or Bluetooth. Important!-Get into the bios by pressing Del when the MSI logo pops up and disable the secure boot option in the Bios. Booted from the recovery DVD's and restored the image to the mSATA drive. This puts 5 partitions onto that drive-EFI boot sector, Windows recovery, OS partition, Data partition and Recovery partition. Opened computer management after reboot and removed the data partition. I also removed the recovery partition which is about 17 GB because I have the backup DVD's. Extend the OS partition to the unallocated space. This gives you about 100GB for your OS. Get back into the Bios and enable the secure boot option again and boot into your OS. Shut down, reinstall the HDD and reboot. Go to Settings, Change PC Settings, General and select Advanced Startup. When it restarts get to the command prompt. Type in "DISKPART", enter, "list disk", enter. Find the disk that is 698GB (should be disk 0) then type in "select disk 0", enter, "clean", enter, "Y" because yes you are sure you want to wipe the drive. Reboot, get into computer management, activate disk and make the partitions you want. I moved all of the library file folders to the single "Data" partition I made on that drive. Music, Videos, Documents and Downloads. Installed 'most' programs on the OS drive and still have about 20GB left. Takes seconds to boot now with no stability issues at all.

A lot of reviews say this laptop is a little flimsy or fragile and does not seem durable. If you live your life with a broken screen on your cell phone I would not recommend this laptop for you. It is, however, thin and light which is why I chose this particular one. Take care of your stuff and it will last! If not, buy the extended warranty. You cannot set up the mSATA as a Cache drive on this laptop due to the Bios not being able to create a RAID array so a 32GB or 64GB mSATA purchase will result in nothing but hate and discontent because you will only get 32 or 64GB of additional storage out of it. Or, a compacted Windows install with the need to buy aftermarket file management software to store system and program files on the Data drive. If you do this and have to wait for the transfer rate of the spin drive what is point of going to mSATA in the first place?

I've had this for about a month now and love it. When I bought this I also bought the mSATA drive and 16GB of ram (this is manufacturers limit) G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ the entire process to do the upgrades took me about two weeks because there isn't much info on migrating the OS without an OEM Windows install disk or some software that doesn't work because of the EFI partitions. I refused to buy another OS when the laptop I just bought has one. There is very little bloatware on this laptop, MS Office setup, MSI BurnRecovery, Battery Calibration and SuperCharger. That's about it. No additional toolbars or ads as you would get with other manufacturers. If you duplicate my procedure the process should take you no more than an hour or two unless you have already put your own stuff on the laptop. In that case you just have to back up your files and then put them back on when you wipe the drive. If you don't want to wipe the drive you can just delete the OS partition but then you end up with dynamic instead of a basic partition because when you extend your Data partition you extend it to the left instead of the right. One last item-performance and graphics. I use this to play WoW and I have the graphics set to Ultra settings. The lowest frame rate I recall seeing is 27fps but definitely no performance issues even at the ultra setting.

it came with a corrupted wifi driver and usb ports didn't work properly:

the drivers disk it came with was also corrupted so I had to use a lifeline from my old laptop to get it working.

once I got the bios and drivers updated and working it was fine and it runs fast. I tested crysis the game wanted "gamer" specs for some reasion but it ran at 60fps (as the overclock drivers should) on "Ultra" and it was barley warm after 1 hour of game time.(i had the fan Turbo on)

worth mentioning:

windows score sets the gpu score at 5.4, however this is just a bug in how windows defaults the GPU on the i7 instead of the dedicated Nvidia GTX 660m.

supports 16gb ram upgrade and an empty mSATA bay(not to be confused with a SATA bay)

This computer has all the specs of a real gaming laptop quad-core i7, nVidia 660m, 8 gb ram, etc.

So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I took it out of the box and it took 10-15 minutes to boot up, ran programs slowly, and continuously maxed out hard drive access. Not only that, windows update didn't work, system tools didn't work and it was 10-15 minutes to reboot or shut down.

After a few fits of rage about windows 8, the poor decisions of MSI engineers and a little soul-searching, I relented and actually began trying to solve the problem. A few hours of research later and I found the needle in the haystack thread that had my solution.

The thread also contains a number of other things you can try to correct performance problems or other issues with the Windows 8 preinstallation image. A key command to try in the command prompt is "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

Three days and sleepless nights later, the laptop is now running "as it should," for a machine with its resume. Booting in just a few seconds, running games like the Witcher 2 at just about max settings, handling multi-tasking taboos like installing and running a game simultaneously, with ease.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this is going to be an awesome laptop that will last me several years, as I originally intended.

Had the laptop come out of the box as it is running now, this review would have been five stars all the way. I chose four stars even though it should have been three, because it is still awesome despite of all the heartburn and the fact that some users may not be able to figure out the problems with the machine.

This computer was a great purchase. I love the size, design, and speed of this model. The only thing I would change is the keypad, the buttons seem to have a little blur to them if you look closely, but my other Dell had the same keys.

I have bought Dells for over 20 years. My last Dell laptop has been in use for 12 years without any problems. The Dell before that is still in the house as a backup for 16 years. So when I broke down and bought my 10th grade daughter her first laptop this year for Christmas the choice was not which brand but which Dell. I decided on the 14R because it was on sale with the i3 processor, the 6GB memory and the large harddrive. She opens it up on Christmas morning and it crashed the first three times she turned it on. I guess Dell has replaced the "blue screen of death" with a black screen of death. Check disk errors, can't find the OS, and the charger sent with the unit is not capable of charging the battery to its full capacity. The unit will slow accordingly. SLOWER because the charger won't charge the battery. Seriously? I was able to salvage Christmas by at least getting it running and I replaced the cover with the pink top, but I was pissed that not only had I blown it for Christmas but Dell had let me down, BIG TIME.

Looked at several Ultrabooks -looking for a 14", aluminum finish, etc. Many manufacturers have similar designs, but execution is where it's at. I have Lenovo Thinkpads and Macbooks at work and other Dell desktop products. Let's go right to the pros/cons:

Pros

well-thought-out, solid chassis, little heavy (good thing).

Cons

screen. The 1600x900 display was a step up from 1366x768, but the viewing angles (up/down) were just too awful to keep this one. I'm no machine spec snob, but this one thing made the laptop unusable for me.

the palm rest part of the case is too soft and pliable. It attracts/absorbs grease and fingerprints like 2 minutes after you use it making it look like an (old) greasy fry pan.

Even the Inspiron 14z with it's cheaper overall build quality got this right. If you're into aesthetics, this one thing alone will convince you there's no "Mac" logo on the back.

bottom aluminum cap is hard to keep in place.

Hi, before I begin my review, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am a tech enthusiast and I have used a wide range of laptops and smartphones. Recent laptops include:

-Dell XPS 13

-Asus UX31A

-Macbook Pro and Air

-much more

So now you know my background, I will give you my list of PROS and CONS

PROS:

Build Quality. Like the XPS 13, Dell really focused on making the build quality as premium as you can feel. I actually like this feeling more than my macbook pro. I like the rubber underbelly with aluminum casing, very high class and premium. Built like a tank.

Trackpad. A very responsive and accurate trackpad. Very big, very macbook-like.

Battery life. It lasts very long. I get about 6-7 hours when doing light web browsing.

CONS:

Screen. Like the XPS 13, Dell cheaped out on the screen. They have the same type of screen the macbook air has, but the quality is way worse, and it shows. Viewing angles are very narrow, and colors change with the slightest angle adjustment.

Size. For an "ultrabook" this thing is huge. It has an ULV (ultra low voltage) processor, found in most ultrabooks, but it is as heavy and thick as a macbook pro! For the size, the power on this XPS 14 is very low in comparison with the macbook pro. It also doesn't have a DVD player, or really anything the XPS 13 doesn't have. So to be honest, I don't even know what Dell stuffed into this giant that would explain the size. Maybe more battery?

CONCLUSION:

If you don't mind the heft, I would say this would be a better machine than the XPS 13 due to the better trackpad. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the UX31A from Asus or one of the newer haswell ultrabooks. This machine is targeting a very small audience who prefers (for whatever reason) the heftiness of this laptop over slimmer and lighter ultrabooks, even though the size doesn't give any extra power or utility.

This is a beautiful machine. Check it out -4.2 lbs, 1" thick, Magnesium case, 7200 rpm HDD, spectacular HD display, 4 GB memory, 320 GB Hard Drive, Iconic keyboard Windows 7, 4 USB ports, HDMI port, great WiFi,etc. etc. All for under $600! It's astonishing. One begins to wonder what truck they steal these off of. Yes, my title is correct, "Macbook Killer." Look at the two machines side by side -they are pretty much the same thing. Yes, the Macbook Pro has a backlit keyboard, ok. But the DM3 has an HDMI port, which means I can attach it to my HDTV and play Neflix or Itunes movies, or youtube, etc. in High Definition. Sure, it has no optical drive, but folks, cd's and dvd's are becoming old technology, and being replaced by thumb/jump drives. Even software will be coming on these. Actually, the DM3 weighs almsot a pound less than a Macbook by eliminating the optical drive, and the advantages of using an external drive are many. Keyboards are almost identical, case is a toss up, display's are similar, windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard has its plusses and minuses going both ways. Yes, the Macbook is more powerful for high intensity graphics, but if you are using your computer as most people do, you will not notice the difference. But the knockout comes at checkout: It is less than 1/2 the price of a similarly configured 13" Macbook Pro!

It is so far superior to any netbook that there is no comparison there. Yes, it's not perfect. It does re-charge slowly, and the trackpad takes some getting used to. But it has so many fantastic features, when you factor in the price, it is the best value out there in ultraportable computing.

I have been using portable computers since the mid-eighties when they were 25 pounds with tiny monochrome screens floppy drives and cost $3000. Now for under $600, they are 1/6th the weight, yet 100 times as fast with 3000 times the storage and much more functionality. Think about how amazing this is! You will love this little machine.

This laptop is a winner! I'd rather have a fully functioning laptop than a Netbook that can't keep up. I've had it for a week and don't regret buying it.

Pros:

HDMI works well for watching Hulu on my HDTV.

Brushed metal case means fingerprints aren't a problem.

Quiet fan and hard-drive.

Wi-Fi is easy to set up (Windows 7 is rock solid).

Light-weight and easy to carry or stick into a travel bag.

13.3 screen size is a happy medium between a Netbook and a Laptop.

Keyboard is easy to use.

4 Gig of RAM is snappy.

Cons:

Battery slowly drains if not plugged in.

Mouse pad wants to start Sticky Keys at times. Fixed by disabling Sticky Keys. Occasionally the mouse pad is briefly unresponsive.

Notes:

Although the battery lost 10% of its charge in 30 minutes while surfing the Web in normal mode, it recharged to 100% very quickly.

A CD drive would sap energy, which is why it's not included (you can buy an external one if you need it).

Overall, this is a great buy for the price. I really enjoy using it.

I've only had this machine for a couple days but it's very nice so far.

Pros: sleek, widows 7, plenty powerful, lots of ram and drive space, battery life, graphics card is decent, weight

Cons: power plug sticks out pretty far when plugged in, but not a big deal. Updated the track pad driver after one freeze and it hasn't locked up again since. No gigabit lan. Memory card reader won't read MS Duo without an adapter, not a deal breaker. Small up/down arrows, again not a killer, I'm already used to it. Track pad is a little sticky.

The biggest problem I've had so far isn't a ding against this computer, it's a windows 7 issue. Games for Windows Live wouldn't update, couldn't uninstall, couldn't reinstall. Finally got it working, but don't ask me to repeat the process.

I saw a guy on the interwebs frantically searching about how to change the DM3 Function Keys back to the standard F1, F2, F3 etc. It's in the bios. Hit Esc during startup, then F10 to enter the bios, configure from there, it's on the third tab or thereabouts. I may keep them as the media keys, don't know yet.

Games: Runs Halo 1 very well, runs Team Fortress 2 pretty decently, Dawn of War II is playable with everything turned way down. So that's a pass for the graphics and processor as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite thing about windows 7: You can select a group of files, right click and change their meta data! So awesome! Updating mp3 tags is a breeze!

I didn't want a desktop replacement, I wanted a laptop replacement and this fits the bill. I'm coming from an old Sony PCG-SRX99 so I'm used to not having an optical drive. Windows 7 lets you mount one on the network anyway.

Very good overall. I'll update if anything changes.

The touchpad is still unresponsive after coming out of sleep. It's turning into a major issue. Hopefully a firmware update comes out.

The notebook is compact and light which makes this highly portable for traveling. This is a compact device that fits nicely on my lap or an airplane tray table. The screen is a glossy 13.3" Widescreen and reflects glare in areas of bright light. There is no wrist pad flex but quite a bit of screen flex. The lid is a brushed Magnesium alloy that easy to wipe clean. The integrated camera is positioned above the screen.

The keyboard layout is well positioned and intuitive. No dedicated keys are present, except for the power switch and WiFi Radio button. Function key allows control of volume, brightness, sleep, lock, fast forward, reverse and play. The function key allows you to use the keys as a numeric keypad.

The touchpad is metallic in color and uses gestures to scroll, zoom and rotate. The mouse buttons take a touch too much pressure to depress and there is no integrated mouse stick, like you see on IBMs or other business machines.

Indicator lights in the front right edge are present for charging status and when the hard drive is being accessed.

This laptop is very quiet and I barely hear the fan. The bottom of the notebook (right where the Windows License sticker is located) is warm but not hot/uncomfortable.

In addition to WiFi, this has Bluetooth capability.

The left side of this notebook has the power Jack, network port, HDMI, 2 USB ports, headphone and microphone jacks. A card reader accepts SD, Memory stick pro, Multimedia cards and XD Cards. The right side of the notebook has lighted power buttons for the WiFi radio and Power for the notebook. 2 additional USB ports and a port for a laptop lock are also present.

This laptop is supplied with Windows 7. There is an MS Office 60 Day Trial and a trial of Norton Internet Security.

Operation

Use of this notebook, given the size and very good battery life make this a practical company for someone always on the go. The keyboard is comfortable and the features make this a great multimedia machine for traveler.

Screen quality is good but a touch too dim for my personal preference. The maximum screen resolution us 1366x768.

Sound quality is average but not powerful. Speakers are in the front edge of the notebook made by Altec Lansing. Dynamic range is limited and has high and midrange frequencies with a weak base.

Battery life in real time applications (WiFi, Bluetooth off, screen brightness on high, and running the Internet is about 4.5 to 5 hours. Only with Bluetooth and WiFi off, and screen brightness to 75%, Power Saver mode, can you approach the 6 hour mark. High Performance mode cuts battery life by about 20%.

I bought this item to replace a three year old 14 inch eMachines laptop that I spilled coffee on (yeah yeah I know). I looked at netbooks for a while because I liked the portability and lower price but realized that for $100-$150 more I could get this nice 13 inch laptop which fell right where I was looking to be. Netbooks are restricted with processor speed, ram, size (if you're looking for something slightly larger) and functionality (you can only get it with Windows Starter Edition).

So when compared to a typical laptop, is this a great machine? Well that depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a small laptop with very reasonable performance all around that won't break the bank, then yes this is a great machine. On sale this unit can be found for around $500-$550 right now (if you are patient and keep an eye on prices) making it a steal in my book. I won't go into all the details since the other reviews pretty much addresses them all but here are a few others and thoughts:

Yes the track-pad is awful. It is fairly slow even with the settings set as fast as they can go. The clicking of the mouse button requires a "click" which I personally like over ones that seem to click every time I brush up against it but once again this may frustrate some people. I use a mouse 90% of the time so the track-pad hasn't been a deterring factor (although it does leave crazy amounts of fingerprints).

The keyboard is great if you ask me but if you use many shortcuts like some people tend to do, you'll find having to use the function key a bit of a hassle. I've read in another review that for example the F keys can be programmed in the bios to be just that without the use of the function key, so that may be an option worth changing for some. I am a bit surprised though that the keyboard does tend to imprint fingerprints too, but once again not a deal-breaker.

The fan is not very loud (at least not mine although I read a couple people complain about it) but I found the bottom of the computer does tend to get a bit hot and sometimes the top where you rest on the keyboard. This isn't unlike many computers and this thing is very slim yet fairly powerful so I suppose it's to be expected. If you're the type that feels any heat is bad, then you may want to look elsewhere.

The lack of a CD drive is worth noting. Through the use of things like Nero to burn images of programs you only have on CD, Daemon Tools to read them, and Bit Torrent to get programs in digital form this is fairly easy to deal with but if you have limited knowledge of computers you may find that just installing your old version of MS Office that is on CD will be a challenge. On a netbook the lack of a CD drive wouldn't even be worth mentioning but because this unit falls under the laptop category in every way then it's worth noting as a negative.

Lastly, the battery life while I haven't extensively tested seems to be a bit poorer than I thought it would be. I however don't give it much of a chance since I always have the brightness as high as it goes, wireless on, etc etc. Using the item in lo-fi to gain some extra battery life isn't worth it to me but should I be without the accessibility of an outlet it's good to know that I can get by when changing the settings.

So if you can get over these setbacks (like I have) and can get this laptop for the $500-$550 range, then I highly recommend it. If paying more, then the ASUS UL30A should seriously be considered. It's got very similar specs except double the battery life plus some of the cons of this laptop such as the track-pad and such seems to not be present with the ASUS. Choosing between the two basically boiled down to price for me and I've been very happy so far. As far as choosing between a small laptop like this or a netbook, all I can say is that current netbooks don't have the processor speed, included and expandable ram, and video playback capabilities that this laptop has. I can run multiple programs, including my accounting software, along with antivirus software, all at once without it skipping a beat.

Over the course of the last 1 month one by one the following have failed on my brand new fujitsu (bought less than 3 months ago) :

Network card (working sporadically only)

USB3 ports (both of them)

The trackpad (not working any more)

The numlock keys

The erratic jumps of the mouse (using external mouse)

Who knows what else will fail on this horrendous machine.

Never buy a Fujitsu any more the product is made in china to very low quality levels combined with horrible customer service (solutions not acceptable) I have just wasted $1100 on them.

This laptop was purchased for me as a gift for college. As a rather average college student myself, I thought this laptop would be sufficient for my needs. 4GB RAM is NOT enough this computer started freezing and crashing in the middle of not-very-taxing applications like running a Facebook game, or even running Microsoft Word. I got the Blue Screen of Death just by going on Tumblr once. I'm a very light gamer, unlike some of my friends whose laptops handle LoL and WoW just fine. However, if I run iTunes, the computer's fan goes crazy and even after I close the application, I have to restart the computer to return it to normal.

Pros:

--The weight. Many people were jealous of how light my laptop was, especially because my campus is very walking-oriented. Portability was definitely a big plus.

--Graphics. The display is very clear and enjoyable for basic purposes.

--Initial battery life. The battery life is pretty decent in the beginning, lasting me about two classes before I need to charge it again.

Cons:

--RAM is way too small for the average college student. Anything remotely taxing on the memory throws this computer for a loop FB games, Tumblr, iTunes especially, Sims, etc.

--The whole computer is rather flimsy, made out of plastic. Pieces of it starting cracking off, and the top is a fingerprint and smudge magnet which I had to clean every week almost so that people didn't think I was some sort of gross person...

--Random crashes and bluescreening.

--One of the two harddrives was always completely full because of Windows Restore, so I only had 250 gbs to work with.

tl;dr:

If you want something stronger than a Netbook that has has a decent battery life, then this computer is for you, but there are better priced computers for the same specs.

I am a IT Networking student that is almost finished with my degree. I got a temp job working for the school district and it may turn permanent. I am very good with windows and linux and I am a hardware geek. When I interviewed for the position they asked what experience I had with macs. Almost the entire school system was on macs because they got tired of viruses. I said none, I have only ever met a couple of people that used them and non that needed repairs. I told them I could learn quickly and pickup as I go and they hired me. Not wanting to fumble around on their time I picked up this laptop to get used to how it works and learn about it. I have learned a good bit about macs with it and find im getting my work done quickly because of the practice.

I must warn you if you have ideas about upgrading the hard drive it is difficult. You just about have to completely disassemble the laptop to get it. Like pealing a onion. The memory on my laptop is 1 gig. I have installed several programs including virtualpc for mac and installed several os, like dos, win2000, xp, and win2003. Well win2003 was a little lagy the rest worked very well and share folder setup very quick.

I would sugest getting the os version that just has ppc architecture. If you have the os that has both you are loosing about 10gig. This laptop comes with 40gig so that is 25% of your space.

The battery is very good. I usually get about 4 hrs on it. You would consider this is good by pc standards but consider that when this was new the time was about 6 hrs. There are things you can get like duel battery chargers that charge and maintain two batters so you always have power. Batteries range from $25-60.

At my school I and others have had a problem with staying connected to the net or even being able to connect.With the mac i have not had one problem with connections. It works very well.

All told the laptop runs very quickly for the amount of memory I have. I am able to carry it around when working on my tasks easily. I also carry it in my backpack to classes. It is very small and although there are some lighter laptops it is a managable weight.

Apple iBook Laptop, G4 iBook 1.33GHz Processor, 1GB, 40GB, 12.1" 1024x768 Display, Combo Drive ,WiFi, 56K Modem ,10/100 Ethernet , Bluetooth, OS X 10.5 installed, Refurbished ( yes ok, well that is what it said. It is a VERY OLD model and not at all what is photographed, (circa 1985) it turned on but the casing was very shaky and loose, there was a mildew or some gross stain between the apple feature on the outside and the monitor wiggles a bit; not to mention the cracks in the item itself. Not all together sure if it was the way it was packaged but no matter. it arrived in a very bent US mail box. The power cord connecter was bent and had to be straightened out with plies. I purchased the mid ranged one, thinking it would be in better condition, but maybe if you pay more you get more from this dealer, I don't know. A suggestion would be for the dealer to use the actual product photograph and not the current model, it rings of false advertising. This may only be me and my run of luck but the term, Buyer beware applies here.

I bought this laptop computer for a friend. He paid me for it. I asked him about it recently. He said he was enjoying the use of it. He downloads music and plays games. He said he is glad he got it. It works fine. He prefers Apple products.

Awesome laptop once you know how Google products work in order to get the most out of this computer. I also like how quickly it boots up. It is also a perfect device for users who like cloud services. After researching this computer online, I found that Google Docs can be saved as a Word doc, can be used "offline", and I found all the necessary steps to reboot in case there is a problem with the OS, how to 'clean' the computer if necessary, and steps on how to add your own screensaver. There is a 'Get Started' app which takes the user through many important features for beginners. The keyboard feel as comfortable and easy on the fingers as my Windows PC. I love that updates are in the background so I would not have to be kicked out like in Windows based OS. I also like that security is built-in so that I don't have to purchase anti-virus/spyware/malware or set up nightly or weekly updates. The laptop is very light and I have no problems with brightness and the colors are vivid when watching movies. I have used my USB stick which houses all my Word docs and have had no problems accessing those files. I would definitely recommend this for those tired of Windows based OS!

Beautiful machine that is fast as lightning, I can't believe how rugged this feels compared to the smaller chromebooks. This machine is built to last with quality construction and a sturdy keyboard, it's not a cheap product at all. The functions perform flawlessly and can run numerous apps at once with zero lag, ZERO!!! The drawback is no optical drive, but I purchased through HP a USB multi drive and now the system is totally dialed in. I Love It! I can do any office app through Google office and I couldnt be happier.

Thanks HP for continuing to make kick ass products. I am a loyal HP fan for life. 2nd HP computer purchase this year and they just keep getting better! Good Job and great engineering!! Keep it up.

I bought from Best Buy and i'm absolutely in love with this lightweight OS. It does everything I need to do, as long as i'm on the 4G or connected to Wifi. It's a great laptop for browsing the web, doc. editing with Google Drive, and all in a very sleek, light design. Highly recommend this laptop running the GOOGLE CHROME OPERATING SYSTEM.

I got this to replace a Samsung chromebook that was dropped.

I love the larger and brighter screen. It is much easier to read than the Samsung. It is a good weight too. Not to heavy.

It comes on very fast and I can browse the internet with speed!

It works with a chrome printer just fine and printer setup was a breeze!

I am very happy with this computer!

I will probably never buy another Windows machine. It is lightweight, boots fast, and battery is good. Love the screen size, it is just right. Net books are not for me. I wish it had a lighted keyboard and it doesn't play well with printers. I was going to order a cloud printer, but instead I used my old lap top with a busted screen and set it up as a print server to run with the lid closed using Google cloud print. Problem solved. Never have to worry about a virus and my stuff is synced into chrome. The free online storage plan is awesome. Google nails it again. Works great with chrome cast.

this laptop has done every tasks for me, i go to school so i do alot of papers, stores alot of files, i can multitask with out problem, it is overall a great laptop. i also love the casing of it it makes it look nice and clean with its aluminum casing.

Not a terrible little laptop by any means. Great deal for the price. I wouldn't cut video or try any intense gaming on it, but it served me well for casual games, web-surfing, and daily computing tasks.

I purchased this laptop from best buy about four months ago. I cant remember what i paid, somewhere in the neighborhood of $500-600. A pretty good deal. It has the fingerprint reader which is a great little gadget. It alows you to log on with just the swipe of a finger. Plus it also alows you to lock out other users (if anyone else may use your pc) from accesing cirtain files and websites. The problem is, you get used to never having to input a password to log on, so you forget your password. Then after a couple months, the fingerpring reader stops working, or only works half of the time, which is a huge pain. But that is not the worst part, the worst part about this pc is the mouse pad. it requires you to use two fingers to scroll up and down on menus. the mouse pad keys are integrated into the mouse pad (the buttons are not seperate, as on most computers). which makes any click and drag mouse function very tedious and sometimes impossible. The mouse pad and the mouse keys are separated only by a grey line (T). if while scrolling up or down on a web page, your fingers hit the grey line, it will cause the web page to skip around. This makes even playing solitair a difficult task. sometimes the mouse pad will lock-up entirely, causing the cursor to stay in one place, and the only way to remedy this is to shut the computer down manually and lose whatever you were working on, unless you have a mouse you can plug in (either wireless or a usb corded one) I have always been a huge fan of HP products, all of my other computers, printers, keyboads, speakers, and other components have always been HP, and ive never been this dissatisfied with any of their products. If i would have known the problems with this computer, i never would have purchased. On the day i purchased this computer, i never knew what havoc this style of mouse pad would cause. This is my first laptop that i have purchased new. The cooling motor reves up and down like a siren, i dont know if this is normal or not, but it is annoying.

So in closing if you have another mouse to use and don't plan on using the mouse pad at all, this computer does ok. its not a super value, but not bad.

Good laptop, the sandy bridge i5 is very nice, plenty of room on the hard drive but it is much slower than what i am used to (im used to ssd's and 7200 rpm drives in raid, so that is a little biased), i would upgrade it with a 7200 rpm drive i already have, but it has a "warranty void if removed" sticker over the plate to replace that, so that will wait, the touch pad is annoying, very sensitive (i misclicked 7 times while writing this review), case feels like very brittle plastic, will post/update after a year or so with more information.

I had THIS laptop for 1 year and it was stolen last January. I am still grieving. I agree that the CASE is the worst feature cheap and too pliable for a large screen laptop. But, I NEVER found it slow. Just the opposite... After my Audi A4, This was the cleanest, fastest, most consistent machine I've ever owned. After a year+ of hard business use and lot's of file storage and adding Office and storing music and audio books... it never bogged down!!!

I would recommend this model and the amazing i5 chip in a heartbeat and am considering buying an old used one even though technology has changed much since then. Instead I bought a "convertible" Windows 8 machine and I HATE it. (Don't buy an HP Envy 2x piece-o-crap)

BTW: There is a patch-fix for the touchpad issue. I called msi customer service (which was FAST, REAL, and GREAT) and they sent me a link to an after-market patch that fixed the touchpad issue.

I had this laptop for a little over a year and now the laptop won't charge the battery. I was told by MSI it would cost around $250 to fix the motherboard. I've decided to take my money and buy a new laptop from a different company. Stay away from MSI.
