I purchased this HP Laptop to replace one that I'd had for five years, that really couldn't keep up with my growing business and personal demands on it, and it had been a top-of-the-line HP as well! I wanted something that had at least 8GB of RAM, check. It had to be able to expand its memory, yes I'm going to be purchasing two 8GB memory cards in a couple of weeks. It had to be 3rd generation (i7) check. Well, that was pretty much everything on my checklist well, it pretty much had to be an HP I looked around our local stores, and found a couple of non-HP contenders, but they weren't really everything that I felt comfortable about, then I saw this one and bam! it was love at first site I love the almost noiseless keys, which is great for conference calls, because I can type and talk at the same time, or listen and type without having to stick the mute on; I love the fingerprint/biometric logon reader with it, I can store all my passwords as my fingerprint, really safe! It never, ever, gets hot so I could rest it on my bare thighs and it would not burn try that with other laptops! The wi-fi on-off key is no longer at the front, where it can be turned off accidentally, but on the top row of the keyboard, much better. The headphone/microphone jacks, again, no longer at the front which is a pain, but at the side. The 3XUSB 3.0 and 1XUSB 2.0 ports is excellent! It also has this neat little flip-down cover over the LAN port at the side too, again really functional. Overall, it's really, really fast and I haven't even upgraded the RAM yet, it's reliable, (well, it's an HP) and it's long-lasting oh, did I forget to mention that it lasts 8 hours unplugged?

Overall, this is a solid machine, with some very strange quirks.

My main gripe with this laptop is the REALLY weird offset touch pad.

Instead of being centered on the spacebar, it's moved to the right about an inch, which puts it under the right palm when you're typing using your home keys. That means when you type, your mouse magically moves all over and places your cursor in random locations unless you turn off the touchpad. This is a REALLY bad design. Basically, you have to have an external mouse and disable the touchpad since touch typing, using the home keys, means your palm is wresting on the touchpad. Luckily HP included a hot zone on the touchpad that allows you to turn it off with a double tap. Let me repeat; you absolutely MUST have an external mouse to type on this computer.

The keyboard itself has been mapped such that the keys are HPs own idea of use. means screen brightness down, NOT rename. You must use "Function" key combo's to access the original meanings of the keys. I am a computing professional, so for me, this is a hassle. Thankfully, still means refresh. If you don't use or know the meanings of the keys, this will not matter to you and is probably a good thing since brightness and volume are immediately accessible. I will likely go download some software to remap the keys back to what they should be.

The arrow keys are non-standard and you have to look every time to get your fingers located correctly.

The keys are flat, which supplies less feedback than I'm use to, but it's more like the mac flat, so if you like cool, then that's great, but this is not something you'd want to type on all day. There is just less keyboard feel than I like. My typing speed and accuracy are dramatically reduced on this keyboard.

HP is known for loading bloat-ware and this machine is no different. I spent the first 3 days of ownership removing all the bloated garbage software they had preinstalled. Once I'd cleaned house I have no complaints with performance. It's a good machine.

That sounds like a list of complaints, and it is, but I can't load up on kuddo's for Windows when I'm reviewing an HP computer. Once you know the hassles, it's just a computer and seems pretty decent. I've had it for several months and am pleased with its performance and response. My gripes are about simple "feel" type things. We'll just have to wait and see how well it ages in a year.

Trying to stick within a budget, and after much research, I think this computer gave me the most bang for my buck. I chose to stick with Windows 7 after reading the reviews on the bugs in Windows 8, which is fine with me and will serve my purposes. It's a solid unit, nice large screen, and the keyboard touch is excellent. This is an upgrade from my desktop model, which I needed to provide mobility for work. Creating videos is a breeze which is more of a hobby, so all-in-all, I got exactly what I wanted . I was a little nervous purchasing something online I couldn't touch, but the reviews won me over. I was quite pleased to see this computer was everything as advertised and more. I've had it for a week and no complaints.

...........

Updated after owning this computer for a couple of months:

I've been using some software similar to AutoCAD, but not nearly as extensive. The graphics are high-end and while rendering them to video, the computer shuts down and the message I receive is something along the lines of "my graphics card has recovered from a serious problem." For now I'm not able to render videos. I do render high-end still pictures of my the projects which works fine, however, the computer runs pretty hot during this process. I prop it up to allow cool air to circulate. This is the only time it runs that hot.

One other issue I'm having is that when I attach my HP Printer (which is only a few months old as well), the system crashes on me again, does a memory save & dump and then restarts. I've reinstalled the drivers and it works for a time but after awhile the same thing happens. My display & printer drivers are up-to-date so this is a mystery to me... especially since these are both HP products.

Other than that, I'm still happy with it. I believe I got what I paid for. This post is for anyone who happens to be buying it for projects such as I've mentioned. It might be worthwhile to upgrade to something a little more upscale.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 Quad Edition (dv7tqe) 17.3" Laptop -3rd

I got this in January 2013 to replace a dying HP CQ120. I am an MBA student and I originally wanted to get a cheap laptop to use for school just for doing research but the specs of this laptop kinda convinced me so I bought it. Let me review it by providing star rating to the important features:

1. Cool Sense: 5 Stars It's really really cool! I use it all day and sometimes until midnight and the laptop just stays cool. My old HP

CQ120 gets really hot and I clearly feel the difference. Love it!

2. Placement of the Power Supply: 2 Stars I really do not know what made them design it this way but it gets in the way of the mouse

They could have placed it in another location or they could have used a power supply plug that is bent 90

degrees so the power supply cord goes towards the back and does not block the mouse. Bad Design!

3. Metal Finish: 5 Stars It looks and feels elegant. Nice!

4. Chicklet Keys 3 Stars. I don't really like them. They feel and sound annoying! The shaky keys sound like rattlers when you type

fast. The layout of the keys is somewhat different from the layout of my previous HP laptop so with this laptop

I get a lot of typos. Lots of work!

5. Intel i7-3610QM 5 Stars. I am not a gamer so I can't really test the speed. CNET recommended getting only Intel i5 for

students who will not play games but will only do school work and online research but I wanted the i7 so I got it.

It's really of no use me at the moment.

6. Beats Sound 5 Stars. I love the sound of this laptop. Compared to my previous laptops (HP, ASUS, Acer, & Toshiba yes I

have been a laptop user since birth. I have never experienced using a desktop), this is the one that has the best sound.

7. Simple Pass 4 Stars. It is convenient because I don't have to type in my password all the time. However, this feature has

failed several times already.

8. Touch Pad 4 Stars . It is not as simple to use as my previous laptops.

9. Blue Ray Player & Super Multi DVD Burner 5 Stars. Very fast, efficient and flexible.

10. Windows 7 5 Stars for now. I try windows 8 later when I get the time then I will compare. When I got this I really did a lot

research on the 2 but I got discouraged by the reviews on Windows 8. I know I can crack it but I am so busy that

I decided not to spend time on that, but I will soon.

Overall, I love this laptop. It's very functional, very fast and really serves me right. For students, listen to what CNET recommends. You don't really need a very strong processor. An Intel i5 would be just fine for you. You need not spend more than $700 on a laptop just for doing school work. I'd say go for the $450 $650 range. The ones sold at Costco are just fine. Now between Windows 7 and Windows 8? Hmmmm. . . . .if you have a lot of time to spend learning windows 8 then go for it.

When I first got this laptop is was light, I thought oh it must be cheap. I started using it and it was terrific. Even though

it was made out of some plastic material, they probably made it lightweight, and unless your going to join the military it is

a great laptop. Light and useful, just got it for a few days and I can tell this is a great product. Keep up the good work HP!

I am surprised at the negative reviews of this little lap top. It is attractive and more importantly worked out of the box. After booting, I went immediately to Windows update and downloaded 61 updates and all loaded successfully. This little beast

then recognized my other system computers and downloaded music and software for various printers. I have been able to load and run older versions of Microsoft Office, Dragon Naturally Speaking, download video and music from the Teaching Company and and Amazon as well as update Skype..... The keyboard is perfect for my rather

weak touch, but not overly sensitive. Multiple open programs work quickly. I was expecting that an i3 would be slower and have hesitancy with all that I threw at it

but it just churned on. I have not tested the HDMI port yet but will update the review later.

One reviewer mentioned that the Windows 8 update would be problematic, but I don't think so. I see also that the links for the 15 dollar rebate AND the Windows 8 upgrade for 14.99 have been restored and I was able to register this computer at Dell Advantage.. no problem.

The service tag is present both on the box AND below the battery. A manual of the computer's specs can be easily downloaded at DELL.

I really do see more rapid data transfer with the USB 3 ports. There are four USB ports not three and the aforementioned HDMI.

This is my sixth or seventh Dell computer in the last several years. While they all have some battle-scars (mostly due to my travel and bad habits) and a few naggling problems; they all can still function. This computer is the least priced with the most power and ease. The sound is a bit weak and tinny but is easily remedied with a stereo connection.

Thus, I would rate this computer an outstanding value, working well out of the box

and exceeding expectations. I am uncertain if the Windows 8 upgrade will be a benefit or an aggravation as this computer segued into our home network Windows 7 premium with ease and perhaps unnecessary updates are just that!

I sympathize with those that received a problematic or DOA computer. Last year the same happened to me with another internet vendor (Tiger.....)and it really has taken a lot of time and effort to deal with it.

My opinion would be to give this laptop a try: Amazon will always back up their warranty and it would not be difficult to ship a defective unit back.

Good Luck!

Update: I just tested the unit with respect to the HDMI port functionality. I went online and streamed a lecture I had downloaded from the Teaching Company. I then projected via the HDMI port of the 15 R 5110 to a Sony internet TV. The laptop performed extremely well in both connecting to the WIFI and streaming in real time and the HDMI port to the TV via a generic Amazon HDMI cable. There were no buffering issues, hesitations or drop outs and the quality of the picture was excellent. I had to fiddle with the Sony TV controls a bit to get the audio to come thru, but when it did it was excellent. The quality was equivalent to the AV output I get from my Blue ray disc player playing ordinary DVDs. No complaints. I hope this is helpful for all of those who have doubts about this little i3 laptop. I am not a gamer but laptop is a good companion and appears to be very reliable to specs. It does not run hot. I posted a review of the generic 15 R 5110 from May 2011 in the comment(3) section of this review. I hope this helps.

Got this a few days ago when I ordered it from a black Friday deal(yeah so that offering was not a scam, some people did get one). It was a Christmas gift so I wasn't planning on opening it. After reading the 4 reviews for the product on 11/29 I decided I better open it and check it out...cause if it can go wrong, it will...that's my luck.

Anyway, I opened the box with a fair amount of trepidation, and it was in there, so far so good. Next I unpacked it and plugged it in waiting for the blue screen of death, smoke, hard drive clicking, a total lack of activity, or anyone of the myriad of other signs indicating issues with the product.

Well after holding my breath for a few seconds the machine started right up, went through its initial use procedure, got online through my network and is now being updated. PERFECT, works great! No ISSUES. Was just what I ordered and arrived as described. Now I can't guarantee it will still be working in a few months, but right now I am a very satisfied buyer.

To address issues in other reviews:

1) I bought it with windows 7, it came with windows 7, I didn't buy it for any windows 8 upgrade special so no points off there.

2) Not repacked came new in a sealed box, no points off there. I must point out that one reviewer complained that no one checked his laptop to make sure it was configured correctly prior to shipping and another complained that his had been opened, so it comes down to how do you please everyone? Me, I want mine unopened please.

3) A reviewer said his did not work, mine did so no points off there. Who knows maybe he forgot to hit the start button. This one doesn't automatically turn on when opened unless it's already been turned on...hey I've seen weirder things than that, like the guy who emailed brighthouse from his home computer to complain he couldn't get online from his home computer.

Bottom line I have a working Dell I3 with 750GB hard drive, internet access, and it is a 15.6 in laptop running windows 7. I have what I ordered, it works fine, so 5 stars.

This has one of the best keyboards of any laptop I have tried. I type 50+ words a minute and this keyboard helps to reduce mistakes. I never hit the touch pad while typing. That was a big problem with an HP laptop that I used to have.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV 15.6-Inch Laptop

I ordered my computer on Jan 8 and it was delivered on Jan 16, that is super fast for an order from Hawaii, with free shipping! The computer arrived in excellent condition, brand new. I plugged it in and followed the prompts and was ready to download my programs and use my computer within 2 hours. The keyboard is a little too flat for my liking but I can get used to it. The cursor jumps all over the place but I will find a fix I'm sure. Good deal for $472, free ship to Hawaii, 6gb ram, 750 hard drive and intel i3 processor. I love it that it came with Windows 7 since I'm not ready for Windows 8. Will update review later.

PS...to keep cursor from jumping all over when typing, press Fn and F3 keys to lock the keypad. Good to go!

See UPDATE below, dated 3/24/13. Original review 12/12)

I needed a basic laptop that was less than $500 and was dependable. I went through no less than 3 expensive HP laptops (around $2500 each) that were all lemons in less than 2 years, and had to hassle each time with the company from which I purchased them because I also bought an extended warranty. After my 3rd HP laptop crashed for the second time, I decided to buy a relatively inexpensive computer from Amazon.

This was $470 with free shipping. I bought the Dell Inspiron because I really like my Dell home computer which is also an Inspiron but has a wireless keyboard. This laptop loaded up in no time at all. In less than 10 minutes I was on my work website and printing to my wireless printer. It already had MS Office 2010 installed, so all I had to do was enter in the product key. I purchased MS Office 2010 from Amazon for $94 and it came on a disc and allows downloads to 3 PCs.

This laptop has a 15 inch screen which is larger than I really needed. For this reason, it's also a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me. Today I sat in an easy chair with the laptop on my lap and, surprisingly, it never got hot after working for 9 hours from home.

I like the keyboard and large touchpad which gives my wrists plenty of room to rest while typing. If there is not enough room for your wrists to rest, the wrists end up resting on the edge of the laptop and can get really uncomfortable. This laptop doesn't have that problem.

The one disadvantage I found, which may not be a problem for most, is that the power cord plugs into the left side of the unit. While it's still 8 feet long, with the plug being on the left side and my outlet located to my right, it didn't quite fit into the outlet located across the room. I solved this problem by plugging it into a surge protector (which will no doubt be better for the unit to protect it from surges). I still don't like the cord hanging over my legs, it would have been nice to have it plug on the right side or in the back. I consider this a minor nuisance.

It is Windows 7 and has a CORE-i3 which is plenty fast for the work I do. The keyboard doesn't light up, but the display light is bright enough so it doesn't need it, even in dim overhead lighting. It has more memory than I'll ever need, and also has DVD/RW.

I'm happy with my purchase. I'll never waste my money on expensive computers, especially HP, again.

UPDATE: 3/24/13

I am sad to report this computer is a LEMON. It crashes every week when I am in the middle of a program, despite my running Webroot Spysweeper daily before I power it off. It crashes in different programs, like MS Word, my work program, amazon.com, etc. The Dell touchpad also fails to work many times, despite my changing the sensitivity. It is frustrating to try to scroll down, only to have the screen stay in one place. Maybe not all of the Dell Inspiron laptops are lemons, but I certainly bought one. Next time I'll stick with local Best Buy and get the warranty.

This is a great laptop that not only is a great dollar value but is delightful to use. I currently use mine for business, and personal use for viewing BluRay movies, and various video streaming applications. This unit (HP dv7-4077cl Entertainment) has impressive operational performance which is based on the "entertainment" grade components it's packaged withBluRay player, Intel Core i3 cpu, high performance Graphic & Audio cards, and much more. For a laptop with a large, bright 17.3" screen, powerful components, & user friendly features, this unit's battery duration is very good (appx. 4 hours).

This model is manufactured with a high quality feel and look. It's sturdy, balanced, and uses large solid hinges to keep it together. It also has a contemporary appearance that is based on a "modern deco" type print on a flat mahogany cover & panel tones, which unlike many other models, hides/prevents thumb prints and other smudges. Overall this model has good performance, good looks, and a great value.

The touch screen is of course the first thing you might notice with this lightening fast laptop. And, well, the touch screen feature is quite awesome, but the dual drives and instant on function are worth the extra expense. Getting used to the new format and layout of Windows 8 requires the user to rethink a few things, but the UI is slick and fast and easy.

This will get you noticed in the office if that is important, more important to me are the features. The light up keys, the speed of the processesor, the ram and then there is the screen. Beautiful images. Ok so I sound like an HP paid fan, but while I love their products, I have owned and used other brands and work with Macs all day at the office. So many co workers are Mac fanatics and pay much more for what this laptop delivers. The bang for the buck here is substantial. .

I was concerned moving from a 17 inch screen to a 15 inch but am doing just fine. I did buy an external DVD drive/ burner because of all the files I have at home on disk. But I have only used the external drive once so far and have yet to take it to work.

If you want Windows 8 touch screen capacity then take this model for a spin.

Within 2 weeks of receiving this marvelous top-of-the-line computer, problems started happening:

1. The the lower right corner of the screen popped out from the lid (i.e., no longer sitting flush to the lid. I only noticed it because I happened to be working in a dark room at the time and light was leaking from the corner.

2. The W and CTRL keys started to become unresponsive.

I notified Eliktronics, but they told me to call HP. If you buy from Eluktronics, you better notice and notify them of any problems within 7 days or they absolve themselves of responsibility. Fine. HP sent out a box for me to send the laptop back to them in.

The day before it arrived, Windows mysteriously crashed and failed to boot "No OS Found" -no boot media, so no way to repair. I spoke with HP again to update the trouble-ticket. We clearly agreed that the issues were the mfg-defective screen, the keyboard, and now the SSD/HDD/OS.

The brand-new computer was sent to HP; dead as a brick. They were supposed to fix the three problems above. What I received back, was a computer that was wiped clean, the OS installed on the 5400RPM HDD rather than on the SSD, a screen that was still leaking light because they never replaced or adhered the screen, and a keyboard was neither replaced nor fixed.

Frustrated and tired of the irritation, I decided that this "premier model" was a lot less than, and that I will just bend over and deal with this POS for the next year or so and buy a different one -that works.

So, that being said, I had manually installed the SSD drivers, moved the OS from the HDD to the SSD and decide to just deal with having to make sure that W and CTRL key-presses take. And I am ignoring the popped screen.

It was a nice effort. Until last night. Now the USB 2.0 port stops working unless I reboot which seems to fix it for several hours.

This is a total lemon. I am in IT and have been computing since the old 8088 days. I've never had issues like this before.

Eluktronics won't help or take responsibility for selling me a lemon, and my wife is on the phone with HP right now to have this sent in for the SECOND time to address ALL the same issues that they didn't fix the first time I sent it in. Seems to me all they did was wipe the drives and install the OS on the wrong drive.

I've have this computer for fewer than two months... and now it's going back to HP for "servicing" for the second time in 2 weeks -who knows what I will have to fix when I finally get it back or what they, once again, won't bother to repair.

If this computer worked, it would be great and something I would recommend.

BUT TO BE CLEAR: I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS COMPUTER FROM ELUKTRONICS.

First I would like to say that this is a good brand, not known to the masses like a Dell, HP, etc but I bet you could find a MotherBoard made by MSI inside them so if you are doubting this product because you havent heard of them then take my words for it or you could still do a google search on them.

Now that out of the way I bought this laptop not for me but for a cousin however I was given the task to look for a laptop good enough for her (she is studying architecture ) and within a $2000 budget.

After careful research and learning I did (I needed to know about the programs people in her field use AutoDesk etc) I came to the conclusion that this laptop was the suited for the job, first and foremost because for the applications they use, the NVIDIA Quadro was made for that and they are actually certified by them.

I compared this laptop with a gaming one and to me this one was just the better choice, of course that depends where your priorities are since the owner of this laptop isn't into gaming this was no brainer however despite of that this Nvidia Quadro GPU is strong enough for some current games.

MSI nailed a good combination of work and gaming into a solid machine, it has all the pro's of a gaming machine along with enough seriousness to be used in a professional environment.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that they just put 1 750HDD, though they left one empty slot for a second one in case the need of more space arises. (I bet a 256GB SSD or 512GB SSD if you can, coupled with 1TB HDD would be nice on this laptop)

Overall, it was a good purchase and I highly recommend it if you find yourself looking for a good laptop that could last you at least 3-4 years without a hassle.

My Samsung Series 7 has enough juice in the meantime and I don't regret the purchase one bit(amazing good looking laptop) but my next upgrade in 3 years will be a MSI gaming laptop I really like how this guys build theirs even if the GT60 0NG-294US is a workstation it really leaves a good impression.

Keep doing a good work MSI!

oooh man, this is a keeper, snagged it on tigerdirect before it went out of stock. Nice screen, lovely burgundy color. Stylish little metal strip down the top there. easy to use, handles complex programs at ease on a budget. I think tigerdirect still has a few left. My only complaint is; WHY VISTA?! why?! why gateway, why did you let me down? sure, 64-bit is an upside, but vista just sucks. XP all the way. btw, you can update to windows XP, but it takes a while to find the right drivers for this to run XP smoothly.

This is a nice looking laptop and I like the design.

As for speed and performance, it's a lot faster than my old Dell so no complaints.

I'm motivated to review the touchpad here because to be honest it's driving me crazy. It's not a smooth touchpad you'll see from the photos that there is a slight texturing to it. I didn't think it would be a problem but my fingertips no matter how light or hard I press don't move smoothly over it in any direction but downwards. They catch and start-stop. It's so frustrating I went back to the dealer and we tried cutting a plastic iPhone cover down to size and affixing it over the touchpad but it didn't stick very well. Sadly I'm contemplating returning it which would be such a shame.

I don't mind using a USB mouse but still I encourage anyone thinking of going with this particular design to really give the touchpad a try. Maybe it's just me, but ... ugh.

Nice product in a very good value. My only disappointment was the battery duration. I never could get up to 5 hours as described in the product especification. Battery lasts for as much as 2 hours. Consider in your budget a long duration (6-9 cell) extra battery.

I do not like the bumpy, textured touchpad my finger catches frequently even with the lightest pressure and it is simply unpleasant to the touch, especially during long hours of use. The experience is obnoxious enough that I am considering getting rid of this laptop after only a few days!

Battery life is only ~2 hrs, not 5 as advertised.

Otherwise, the laptop is fast and attractive.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J/S 15.5-Inch Laptop - Silver

I have nothing but good things to say about this computer. It runs fast and has everything on here that I need and more. Everyone else review has said it all in regards to good things. The only negative I agree with is battery life but for all the good that comes with this... I can deal with that.

Though my Sony laptop has been dependable, I will never buy a Sony again. Sony has no automatic updates for software, hardware or drivers. They do not even have all of the Sony models listed, including the model that I own. They say that you can sign onto their site to see what if any updates might be available for your model, but if your model is not listed, then it is difficult to get to that site. Even if you do get to a comparable site, the updates that are listed tend to be generic updates that are applicable to a wide range of models. When I asked them which updates I should download, they said I should download the updates that fix any problems I am having. That is fine for serious problems because I actually know that I have them, but that advice does nothing for those subliminal problems that do not crash a program, but merely slow down the computer function. I am just a moderately savvy computer user, so Sonys might be great for the advanced computer user. Otherwise I would suggest that you look for a brand that gives better automated support if your computer knowlege ranges from limited to moderate.

Had this laptop for a few days now and I love it! Its super fast, lightweight and beautiful design. I really like the keyboard. The individual letters are spread out. Only complaint to the keyboard is the enter and backspace button is little small and the left arrow is right next to the 0 which is annoying at times. I couldn't believe the price for 6GB memory 500GB RAM and i5 processor. Comparing price vs. features, Lenovo beats the competition. I've had a HP for 3 years, which broke on me, and switching over to Lenovo was the best decision I've made.

I purchased this laptop from Costco about 5 months ago. I purchased no extra warranty or any of that stuff. My general laptop-mantra is that it should only last you 2 years or so before changing to a better laptop... have to keep up with the rapidly improving industry if finances allow.

I'll start with the specs I purchased this laptop with:

i5 processor, 8 gig ram, 750 gb hard drive, no dedicated graphics card, windows 7 home

It's a pretty standard build, and for around 600 bucks, I was able to snag it from Costgo.

This is my computer that took place of my mid2009 macbook pro with 4 gb ram and intel core 2 duo + 250 gb hard drive...

I have to say that Lenovo made a solid build with this computer. It trucks through almost everything I've thrown at it! Keep in mind, this is not a gaming laptop, nor is it a heavy duty desktop replacement. Nor is it an ultraportable. It's just a 15.6 inch screen laptop with a bit of heft (but every port you could want/need) and with decent specs, it's just a really solid all-around laptop. You can find out more information on the usage and all that stuff from other reviews.

I simply wrote this to say that the product is pretty solid. One thing I will say though...about 5 months in, my motherboard fried but Lenovo offered to fix it completely for free. So really big kudos to them! Especially since my warranty was due to expire 2-3 days before they fixed it. So I'm really happy that the process went smoothly. I will say that the phone call took an hour, but it helped that I had a really nice guy from Costco keep me company while I was waiting...but that's to be expected since my Macbook Pro took 3 days to fix entirely with a similar problem (and you have to go through hordes of customers at the Genius Bar @ NYC where I'm from). So in that regard, I didn't really mind the 1 hour phone call and the mailing in of my computer.

I think I'll cling to this computer for about another year before I get a better one, but for the price...nothing beats it.

Should not be writing a review when full of anger and frustration. This laptop was a Christmas present but by Valentine's Day it was dead. It will not boot up. Appears that power supply is fine because the power bar is lighted (amber color)

What is infuriating is the type of "customer support" I received. Raja S. (who refused to give me his last name) needs extensive training in customer support and technical troubleshooting.

He mocked me when I could not locate the tiny button he said I needed to hold along with the power button, "You have to hold them for one minute."

After a minute transpired, (I actually thought we were disconnected because of the dead air on his end), I informed him that nothing happened. The laptop is still not booting up.

He said, "You have to hold the buttons for 3-5 minutes."

WHAT?!?!?

Fortunately I had two other family members with me so we took turns holding the buttons while we watched for the 5 minutes to be up.

After that Raja S. said we have to send the laptop back to the Depot and we have to pay for one way shipping. What?? No RMA# he said no.

He also said we would have to pay if they find out the laptop is damaged. Ummm.. We already paid $599. for this paperweight.

When gathering my information, Raja was not very helpful in soliciting my contact information. Again, dead air. I could not tell if he was ready for my information or not or even if he hung up on me.

I finally asked, "Hello Raja are you there?"

He got snippy and said, "I am waiting for your address not just the street where you live."

I finally flipped out at him about this whole experience. I work in customer service and would probably be given a strong reprimand if I treated my customers as I was treated.

He proceeded to put me on hold from 16 minutes.

I will never purchase another Lenovo product again based on both the reliability of the product and the lack of customer support. This is the first time I ever had a computer or laptop die after such a short period of time and this is also the first time I called a "help desk" and spoke with someone so apathetic.

I bought it last year 8/31/2012, almost 1 month after 1 year warranty, there is a brighter mountain-shaped area like a scar at the bottom of the LCD, with size of 1 sq in.

This is the first LCD problem I ever have had with laptops. Very frustrating!

Worst customer service I have ever received in my life. I bought an Idea pad laptop and it kept crashing on me. After hours on the phone they offered to fix it if I paid for the shipping. I sent the thing in twice and they replaced the hard drive twice. Pretty dumb if you ask me. Each time they claimed they tested it and claimed that it worked but the computer was still crashing. After two months of waiting for a working computer I sent it to a local computer repair shop and they fixed it with a higher voltage power supply. Lenovo refused to pay because they said it was a software issue and software is excluded in the warranty. Lenovo is a company that does not care about their customers or the quality of the product. Someone really should do something because this is just not right.

I guess I should have upgraded a long time ago. Love all the features on the laptop. The processor speed is fast. Plenty of memory and HD space. Display is crisp and clear. Comfortable keyboard. Windows 7 is a big step up from Vista. Can't wait to dig more into the other features. Thumbs up!!!

A very nice notebook at a smashing price. Love the look of it. Just Got it a few hours ago, so still playing around with it. Overall, good speed with the i3 intel processor. Not a techy, so cant say much in that dept. Smashing deal though. I will give it four stars, since i'm still exploring.

I bought this computer for work (primarily doing research, running database programs, writing, emails, etc) and it suits it's purposes well. The computer processor speed seems pretty fast and the RAM and Hard Drive are a nice upgrade from my previous HP. Previously I had an HP G60 with 320 gb hard drive, 2 GHz dual-core processor, was running Vista. A few things in comparing the two I think this newer computer's overall external appearance it a little cheaper looking and made, the wireless doesn't seem to reach as far, and the sound system in the older computer is better. But again, I can't complain good computer that will suit anyone doing similar work or a student.

I purchased this laptop about 3 weeks ago. Reloaded it to Windows 7 as i despise Windows 8. After a few driver issues with having to hunt for them, the system performs beautifully. Only game i have played on it is World of Tanks, and it runs at 80 FPS with medium graphics on average. Not a top end gaming system, but is very capable. I also installed a 256GB Solid State drive before i ever turned it on the first time. So no idea how it functioned on the original drive. The laptop is very light for its size, and i almost forget its in my bag at times. I have been carrying an HP Elitebook, which is 2 to 3 times heavier, and very noticeable now that i carry this one.

Performance/specification wise for the price this is a pretty good deal. But if you're a stickler for design you'll be very disappointed, mostly around the keyboard/touch pad. First off the keyboard is offset to the left about an inch while the touch pad is centered. This leaves your right hand constantly contacting the touch pad during use and moving/clicking the mouse all over the screen. This is very very annoying. Second, the keys are large and well placed for the main letters, but most of the extra keys: insert, del, arrows, etc just don't feel right or natural. I've used much smaller keyboards than this that have been much more intuitively placed. Then the touch buttons for volume and wireless enable/disable are too easy to accidentally touch. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally disabled my wireless, and there is no option to disable these buttons.

I've had this computer for about a month now and have no problems so far. I've found that the battery lasts about 3 hours with wifi off and on power settings set to conserve battery life. They keyboard is great in my opinion. They keys are raised slightly above a glossy surrounding which keeps most dust and dirt from getting under the keys. It's really easy to wipe off any dust that might get on it.

The fingerprint reader doesn't work with Google chrome, so if you're a Chrome fan this might apply to you. There is a plugin for Firefox to use it, but I don't like Firefox. Otherwise it works great.

The entire trackpad area is touch-sensitive so that means you can't rest your thumb on the click buttons. It doesn't have the scroll area on the side of the pad like some computers do. Instead you have to use the two finger scrolling, which took me a few days to get used to but now it's simple and easy to use.

The keyboard has a column of 5 dedicated buttons on the leftmost side. The buttons open HP Mediasmart, which is this panel that opens on-screen to access the webcam, video editor, etc, there is one that opens your default web browser, a print button, and a calculator button which is mostly useless to me, but if you use the calculator included in Windows a lot then it would come in useful. The only thing is is that I often accidentally hit the button when trying to use the ctrl button.

After getting used to typing on the keyboard I find it very comfortable as it is not too mushy and not too hard.

This computer was a replacement for my old Compaq Presario, so I figured I'd buy an HP since Compaq is an HP owned company. The speakers on my Presario were fantastic, so I was a little worried that this laptop would have the much-hated cheap speakers that a lot of them have. I loved this one because the speakers are in the front like my Presario and let me tell you.. I was not disappointed with these speakers. They are plenty loud and don't echo like the ones on my sister's Dell. So I really think that's a big plus.

The hard-drive is advertised as 640 GB, which the computer has, but I thought you should know that there is a partition of it that is unaccessible as it is used for back-up and recovery, this was no problem for me, because I knew it would be like that as it was with my Presario. Anywhere from 580-590 GBs are usable depending on the configuration of software and features.

The plastic around the screen is really scratch-prone. So I use a soft towel to wipe it with.

I really love the aluminum body, as it doesn't collect fingerprints too bad.

Here are some little things that I liked about it aren't totally important:

It comes with a pretty long power adapter. I'd say it's almost ten feet long although I haven't measured it.

The HP logo on the front of the laptop lights up, which I thought was kind of cool.

The USB ports aren't all crammed in the same place, so you can use three USB powered devices at the same time and not worry about cramming the plugs in the same area.

It doesn't feel as heavy as you would think, considering that it's a 15.6 inch.

I actually didn't buy this item from Amazon, where I had originally planned on ordering it, because, at the last minute, I did a search and found the exact same laptop on the HP website for about $50 less.

Overall, I'm in love with this laptop. It's fast, beautiful, and easy to use.

The $634 laptop computer worked wonderfully for 12 months. Within a few days of the warranty expiring, the powercord that originally came with the laptop charged the laptop inconsistently, but enough to keep it running. On the 13th month (1 month after the warranty expired), the powercord arced and fried the motherboard. This is an extremely expensive fix. We called HP customer service and were told that because the warranty expired a month ago, we are on our own! I googled this issue and found that this is a common problem. Before you purchase this computer, do a little more research to find out what problems people have had with HPs as well as what problems people have had with HP customer service. Had I done this before I purchased the HP laptop, I never would have made the purchase.

This is my second HP notebook, my previous one being an HP Pavilion DV9334US 17". I currently use an HP Elite desktop, and previously had a similar HP desktop, both of which have served me well (I work mainly with graphics and book design). My previous HP notebook computer has been a reliable workhorse (passed on to my wife for her new career) and led me to look for another HP when it came time to buy a new one. I checked around, read reviews, and settled on the HP dv6-3140. This computer lives up to the excellent reviews. It is a mystery to me what the negative reviews are about. The hinge seems pretty solid (almost too solid, since you cannot simply lift the screen to open it, but must hold the bottom to lift the screen). The "island-style" keyboard is quite nice, as are the dedicated keys along the left and right of the keyboard. My previous notebook being 17", I miss the number pad, but I am adjusting willingly for the saved weight and size. I also find the 15.6" screen quite large enough (and beautifully bright) for my purposes.

Another complaint I see from another reviewer has to do with heat buildup. I don't find that to be the case at all. Actually, at one point people were encouraged to stop calling these computers "laptops" and instead call them "notebooks." Using them on your lap (or on soft surfaces such as bedding) can block the air vents and lead to burns or worse. Indeed, all computers give off heat, and the more powerful the processor, the more heat will be generated. One needs to use good sense and allow that heat to escape.

Aesthetically, the finish is elegant and (so far) seems resistant to scratches and general wear. The hard drive is huge by notebook standards, and should eliminate the need for anyone to add a second drive. And, finally, I love the fingerprint reader feature. I usually don't password protect my computer, but this makes it too easy not to. Moreover, it makes online shopping and site access much easier and secure. Thus far, I haven't found anything to complain about this excellent computer, though I am still getting used to the multi-touch pad...probably because I don't use the touch pad much, since I bought the excellent Logitech Wireless Anywhere Mouse MX (you will never need a mouse pad again).

I was looking for a laptop with a good processor that would get me through college but cost less than $500. I ordered this refurbished model from amazon and I have nothing to complain of so far. Its display is crisp. It is about what you would expect as far as speed goes. It is by no means slow, and gets tasks done without wasting time. The speakers are loud enough for a laptop. The touchpad is excellent and easy to scroll with two-finger touch. In addition its zoom feature when you bring your fingers together or apart is handy. The webcam has a maximum resolution of 1.0 megapixels (I was not able to find that info. in the specs online). The microphone is fine, and about what you would expect. The case itself is fairly sturdy. I believe it could stand a 3 or 4 foot drop without significant damage. Altogether I have now used it for a month and a half and have had no problems with it. I would recommend it.

I bought this because I have had good lack with Toshiba products. However, for some reason (I'm sure someone will have an opinion) they offset the keyboard and although it is in centered on the letter keypad, it just doesn't seem right. There is numerical keypad to the right and I presume they centered the touch pad with the letter keypad for that reason. But for me it is not good. I feel like I'm only utilizing 2/3 of the computer since the number keypad is rarely used. I'm focused on the keypad that is left of center. I find myself having to consciously look to the right side of the screen. Also, when I have the computer on my lap, since it is laptop, the right side is, well off the right side of my leg. Just doesn't feel balanced. I researched this computer and the pictures did not (in my opinion) clearly show the offset. So when I went to pick it up there was not a display so I just bought it and took it home. My fault. I suggest physically going to see this thing and check it out before you buy it. Also, not crazy about Windows 8. I'm not a huge tech guy and it seem confusing an difficult to use.
